The award was developed by SGMC’s Physician Wellness Committee earlier this year, hospital representatives said in a statement. Dr. Elizabeth Flail, who serves on the leadership team, said SGMC reviewed more than 50 nominations for the award, which serves to highlight the role physicians play in providing compassionate care and clinical excellence to patients at SGMC. Dr. Brian Dawson, chief medical officer, said, “Dr. Valdez has served patients in our area for 21 years in both the primary care setting and inpatient hospital setting. Not only does he care for his patients but he is known for the care, guidance and education he provides to local migrant communities.” Valdez humbly accepted the award, stating that his motto is to treat his patients as he would treat members of his own family. “I am accountable for my patients and the Lord gives me the capacity to care for them,” he said. “I pray every morning for the Lord to give me the ability and wisdom to provide the very best care to my patients.” Valdez is part of SGMC’s hospitalist group, Apogee Physicians, and has been with the health system for 15 years. SGMC has a medical staff of more than 400 providers and a Physician Network of more than 60 physicians who provide care in a vast array of specialties. Parliament Urged To Expedite Passage Of Aged Persons Bill Modern Ghana
Parliament Urged To Expedite Passage Of Aged Persons Bill – Modern Ghana https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/parliament-urged-to-expedite-passage-of-aged-persons-bill-modern-ghana/ Social News Professor Mavis Dako-Gyeke, Director of Centre for Ageing Studies, College of Humanities, University of Ghana, has urged the Parliament of Ghana to expedite the passage of the Aged Persons’ Bill into law. She said the Bill when passed would highlight the principal guidelines for the holistic care of older persons. Professor Dako-Gyeke said this when she addressed the media ahead of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons. The Day, which is celebrated on every October 1, seeks to raise awareness on the importance of improved care and living conditions of older persons. This year’s day would be commemorated on the theme, “Resilience of Older Persons in a Changing World.” Professor Dako-Gyeke said the theme highlighted the resilience of older persons in the face of environmental, social, economic and lifelong inequalities. “Extant research on older persons in Ghana report that chronic ailments, geriatric-specific situations, isolation and neglect, and ageism constitute some of the challenges experienced by older persons. To overcome these challenges, older persons may have to adopt certain coping strategies to become resilient,” she added. She stressed that it had become necessary to devote time to focus on ageing-related issues to unearth solutions that could enhance their overall wellbeing. Professor Dako-Gyeke, therefore, called on government and other stakeholders to explore the use of policies and legal framework to ensure that older persons maintained resilience and improved their quality of life. She urged society, especially young people, to pay attention to older persons and assist them, saying, in future, old age would catch up with them as well. She said the Centre had also been training health workers and caregivers in elderly care as well as had been undertaking outreaches programmes for the elderly. Dr Frank Dzifa Kpesenu, National Programme Coordinator for Healthy Ageing Programme, Family Health Division, Ghana Health Service, said the Service was training specialised health workers who would handle older persons at district hospitals. He said it was to ensure that older persons were treated with outmost care and dignity at health centres. Dr Kpesenu added that as parts of efforts to improve healthy living among older persons, the Service was ensuring they had access to curative services of common diseases. GNA

Big Data Is The Future Of Metaverse, In A Sustainable Way – Analytics Insight https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/big-data-is-the-future-of-metaverse-in-a-sustainable-way-analytics-insight/ Big Data is the Future of Metaverse, in a Sustainable Way Sustainability and Metaverse: How Metaverse Is Changing Big Data and How to Adapt in the Future? While the Metaverse may offer certain people a vast array of options for business expansion and development, for others, the concept is still relatively novel. Businesses should in some manner use this new development as justification for making sure best practices are being applied to their processes and doing right. Big data is the center of this new technology revolution. In the Web3 era, consumers will generate such massive amounts of data that intelligent insights won’t be far away. Big data analysis may also aid in resolving some of the major sustainability problems facing the planet. The Metaverse has the power to change how businesses operate, and with the amount of data that will be generated at an exponential rate expected to reach 160 zettabytes by 2025, businesses will have a lot more information that has to be handled along. The Metaverse market might be worth $800 billion by 2024. Importance of the Metaverse The metaverse, the subsequent technological advance, is a three-dimensional representation of the internet. Initially, text-based, the Internet and computing later shifted to image-based. Now, a virtual public place and a network will be developed so that we can live parallel digital and physical lives. Despite being perceived as a video game, it is the foundation of the global economy and the future of the digital economy. When we ponder, “What is the next great thing in climate adaptation technology?” it is because climate issues now influence everything. Metaverse and cloud computing are the solutions once more. How will the metaverse contribute to sustainability? One of the topics that are being raised more frequently in the technology industry, as well as by connectivity companies and others, is this. The metaverse is widely believed to be the upcoming big thing. The creation of the virtual metaverse has been compared by many experts to the birth of the internet itself as the next technical revolution of the century. Forecasts are genuinely optimistic. A completely new reality, one that is entirely digital, would emerge from the metaverse and grow concurrently with the physical one. Through individual avatars, residents of this virtual metaverse would communicate with one another using a variety of gadgets, including smart clothes or interfaces that were physically affixed to the body. This would entail developing new connections and ways of interpreting them, possibly developing entirely new economies, the emergence of new markets and goods, the sharing of experiences and information, and much more. The first corporation to discuss its metaverse was Meta. Meta was formerly known as Facebook. However, some powerful voices are keeping their foot on the brake. “This universe is not all that close,” asserted Raja Koduri, Senior Vice President and Group Head of Accelerated Computing Systems and Graphics at Intel, “since our computing, data storage, and connectivity capacities simply aren’t yet great enough to make this vision a reality.” Naturally, there is also the issue of sustainability. Energy consumption, one of the great unknowns of the metaverse Our most recent encounter with the metaverse, if we go back in time, was Second Life, which debuted in the video gaming industry in 2003. Technology was one of many factors that contributed to the gradual decline of this “grandfather” of the virtual metaverse. Simply said, the majority of computers at the time were incapable of supporting the information processing necessary for a seamless experience. As we’ve seen, something comparable to what’s going on right now with the technology of the metaverse. This scenario might be replicated but substantially enhanced in the metaverse. Before 2030, the energy consumption of the technology sector may rise by 14%, claims ETLA Economic Research. However, these projections are taken into consideration not the energy requirements of emerging technologies or devices. The Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030, in particular addresses accessible and environmentally friendly energy, if there are any ethical questions regarding the metaverse, sustainability will be the most vocal opponent. The metaverse as a driver of sustainability The virtual metaverse shouldn’t be a barrier to sustainability, notwithstanding any potential roadblocks. It might already be spurring modifications to support it. Like any virtual world, the metaverse requires data transfer with massive bandwidths and incredibly low latencies. We need to start taking the issue of expanding data centers seriously once we take into account the significance of the cloud for virtual settings like the metaverse. And at the same time, the carbon footprints they leave behind, which, according to Lancaster University experts, might increase by up to 30% by 2030. Large technology companies are attempting to make data centers substantially more sustainable because of this. For instance, Microsoft has pledged to use only renewable energy as of 2025 for its Azure cloud platform, as well as to return more water than it uses and achieve certification for zero emissions by 2030.

Best Hodinkee Comments Of September 2022 HODINKEE
Best Hodinkee Comments Of September 2022 – HODINKEE https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/best-hodinkee-comments-of-september-2022-hodinkee/ We’re back with another edition of the hottest Q&A in town, The Conversation. This week some of HODINKEE’s finest editors (just kidding, they’re all fine) answer some of the stand-out comments of the past two weeks. So buckle up and prepare to enter whatever you call an extremely polite version of the Thunderdome.  Cartier Says ‘Screw This’ The comment: “Wanted to ask the experts a question about the screws on the bracelet and face of the watch. What is the experience with these? Any report of them coming loose and falling out? Are any of them functional?” – unce_turbo_997 The response: The screws on the bezel are completely functional. Besides keeping the bezel in place, they put pressure on the crystal and gasket below, adding to the water-resistance of the Santos. The bracelet screws are purely ornamental and, in my humble opinion, the perfect touch on the two-tone models. I have seen a watch lose a bezel screw, but it wasn’t a Santos. Cartier uses blue 243 Loctite to keep both sets of screws in place, so those suckers aren’t going anywhere. –Mark Hackman  The comment: “Great article, James. How does the Bracelet wear compared to other metal bracelets? It begs the question about which four watches would you put on the Mt. Rushmore of Polar Watches. I’d start with the Explorer II 216570 as the George Washington of Polars – it is the most distinctive of the Explorers with the orange accent over white. It’s also on the Mt Rushmore of legibility.” – wildblue94 The response: While I can’t speak to the B&R’s bracelet, as I have yet to be hands-on with the watch (this was just an introduction), I do enjoy the idea of a Mt. Rushmore of polar (white-dialed) watches. My lineup would likely include the 16570 Explorer II (which I’m fortunate to own), plus the Speedmaster Alaska Project, the first-gen Patek Philippe 5270g with the silver/white opaline dial and black accents, and the short-lived Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 25554BA with a white dial. Talk about a four-watch collection… only three to go. –James Stacey  The comment: “I was really pleased that AP produced a watch without exposed screws… until I saw the obverse. They just can’t resist steampunk. The AP craftsmanship shows through (yes, intentional pun) and as usual, detail, detail and detail. I again, raise my weariness with skeleton dials. As one of long tooth and poor eyes, these designs, while showing off the workings, make the hands and functions indecipherable. I thought that was why open casebooks were so popular.” –OldCossack The response: There’s a time and a place for refined elegance, but not every watch is meant to be a traditional three-handed dress watch. You can buy a Calatrava for that. A Royal Oak was also meant to be sport watch, and the Code 11.59 is a bit of a hybrid. I think one disservice AP did in the original Code 11.59 launch was including the time-and-date with the other more complicated watches – if they’d focused solely on the chronograph, tourbillon, and chiming models, it would have indicated a collection focused on haute horlogerie and complicated watchmaking rather than the confusing mixed bag that the collection started its life as. That said, if we consider the Code 11.59 to be a platform for AP’s most progressive designs and complications, then I welcome all the bright-blue bridges and flying tourbillons we can get. –Logan Baker  It’s Time To Put Some Respect On The Laureato’s Name The comment: “I try to understand why Laureato failed while the Nautilus and the RO are a great success. Is it in the name? Girard Perregaux is no more awkward as a name than Patek Phillipe or Audemar Piguet. Perhaps Laureato is not as good a name as Nautilus or Royal Oak. Why call your watch a student? Who wants a student watch? It is far more inspiring to be associated with something majestic like the ocean. Being sold to Kering didn’t help either. These people have no appreciation of horology. The moment GP and UN underperformed, they dumped them. The green dial Laureato is a great watch. I hope it will be fully appreciated one day.” – yesman The response: Ultimately this comes down to brand recognition. Audemars Piguet and Patek Phillipe are both brands with mass market appeal, while Girard-Perregaux exists, for the most part, in the watch enthusiast space. My friend and founder of RollieFest, Geoff Hess, recently explained to me that certain criteria must be checked in order for a watch to endure a lasting legacy: It must be widely known and instantly recognizable by a critical mass of collectors, there must be a memorable and easy to understand story which compliments the design, and the watch must be copied by other brands. I think what the Laureato misses here is a widely known story and design. I also firmly believe that watch brands who run independently of a holding group have more power and control over the story they want to tell. It can also feel more authentic if the story is coming straight from the source. I very much enjoy your Laureato hypothesis. Some even speculate that the watch was named after the 1967 film starring Dustin Hoffman. And I agree that the green dial Laureato is a sleeper hit. Hopefully, we can help to spread the word! –Malaika Crawford.  To Customize Or Not To Customize The story: In a Second Opinions essay, Nick Marino argues that custom watches are awesome and should no longer be taboo. The story is a precursor to his Talking Watches episode with Cooper Zelnick, whose company Cloister Watch Co. lovingly modifies vintage pieces. The comment: “I just read your editorial today and I might be late to the party (over 100 comments), but I would like to make some comments that I think you seriously missed in this piece.  First, and most importantly, a watch is not a pair of jeans or an Apple gadget (one could argue that Apple does not allow customizations either with their software but that is for another conversation), there is a reasoning, a tradition, a history that comes with a watch. Things are made this way because they have always been made this way. There are no rational explanations in the 21st century as to why things should remain the same, but these values and methods are deeply anchored into the European psyche. From the color of an umbrella, to the recipe of a macaron, or the numerals on a dial, tradition and history have a huge and heavy influence on why these products (and the companies that make them) have survived for centuries. I do realize, having lived for thirty years in the United States, a country where where individuality and consumption are king, that it is difficult to accept that a watch was not made for you specifically, but was, instead made to outlast you. The design of a timepiece is not up to the individual imagination of the consumer. It is, instead, the product of a long tradition belonging to watchmaking.  Authenticity is another important reason why watchmakers will not allow personalization. If, instead, everyone was modifying everything to their liking, it would become nearly impossible to verify that a product was indeed produced by the original maker. Any auction house expert will tell you how frustrating it is to establish that a unique watch truly originated from the manufacture and was not instead modified along the way by its purchaser. Allowing personalization would make it much easier for counterfeit goods to pass as authentic. If anything goes for a Royal Oak, then what is a Royal Oak?  Watchmaking has nothing to do with fashion and have never been part of that dialogue. Watches are, instead, scientific objects, tools, art and a heritage that we try to preserve.” – WilliamMassena The response: To begin, I should say that it’s wonderful to have an eminent watchmaker like William Massena engaging with our stories. Even though we disagree, William, I appreciate you weighing in. Another commenter, 8ball, capably addressed your thoughts on tradition and authenticity, so I’ll focus on your last point – the assertion that watchmaking has nothing to do with fashion. With all due respect (and trust me, the respect is very real), I’m afraid the evidence is stacked against you here. Watches are, in fact, inextricably tied to fashion – and have been for ages, perhaps even since their invention. They are, at a basic level, beautiful objects worn on the body as functional adornment. They come in and out of style, just like clothes. They are produced by fashion houses from Chanel to Gucci. Watchmakers themselves have long promoted their own fashionability. Check out these vintage advertisements, courtesy of Nick Federowicz, aka the archival Instagrammer @adpatina. The folks at Omega wouldn’t have picked Cindy Crawford as a brand ambassador in 1995 if they weren’t interested in fashion. Rolex wouldn’t have aligned with Gernreich if it didn’t care about style. The AP advertisement sums the whole thing up: Watches perform “the art of self expression.” If that ain’t a succinct definition for the role of fashion in our culture, I’m not sure what is. Nevertheless, I appreciate all the conversation around my essay and subsequent video. Starting a conversation was the whole point – and continuing it is the point of this follow-up post. I totally understand why purists can’t stomach the idea of altering a factory original watch. But that shouldn’t stop the rest of us.  This hobby is supposed to be fun. It’s supposed to be about, as Audemars Piguet might say, the art of self expression. Nobody ought to dictate what you can and can’t do with your watch (or your clothes, for that matter). Taste is personal. Wear what you like – even if that means you have to design it yourself. –Nick Marino The HODINKEE Shop has a variety of pre-owned and vintage models from the brands mentioned here. Terra (LUNA) Collapse Big Step Backward For Crypto Decentralization: Ethereum (ETH) Creator Vitalik Buterin – The Daily Hodl https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/terra-luna-collapse-big-step-backward-for-crypto-decentralization-ethereum-eth-creator-vitalik-buterin-the-daily-hodl/ The co-founder of Ethereum (ETH) says the implosion of stablecoin issuer Terra (LUNA) earlier this year dealt a big blow to the decentralization of crypto. In an interview with The New York Times, Vitalik Buterin says decentralization in the crypto space has been progressing in the right direction since the epic collapse of defunct digital asset exchange Mt. Gox in 2014. According to Buterin, hacks involving centralized intermediaries spurred people to move toward a decentralized model when buying and selling crypto, which he notes was going well until the meltdown of Terra in May. “And so you don’t need centralized intermediaries to hold things on the cryptocurrency side. And I think that actually has improved things. The times when it hasn’t improved things, probably the biggest one was the Terra LUNA collapse of a few months ago, which was interesting because I think there was a combination of two causes. One of them was that the mechanism behind Terra LUNA was just fundamentally bad economics.” The Ethereum creator says that while Terra’s blockchain is decentralized, the team behind it had too much control behind the scenes. Buterin points at Terra’s efforts to accumulate Bitcoin to support its algorithmic stablecoin UST. “And nobody knows what the LUNA Terra team were doing with Bitcoin or the asset. And they made a lot of promises. And look, they really tried hard at making these kind of very centralized efforts to manipulate the market and prop up their coin. But it ended up eventually failing, right? So I think that story is instructive, because it shows like to some extent, decentralization by itself doesn’t solve every problem.”  Regardless of what the Terra team did in the shadows, Buterin highlights that blockchain’s transparent nature allowed some people to predict the crypto asset’s demise. “Because if the algorithm is bad, then even a fully open and transparent implementation of a bad algorithm is going to break. But at the same time, it does still show the difference between the decentralized and trustless part of the ecosystem, where lots of people were able to see ahead of time what was going on. And lots of people were able to warn about what could happen.”  You can read the full interview here. 5 Things About Austins Weather Worth Worrying Over In October Austin American-Statesman
5 Things About Austins Weather Worth Worrying Over In October Austin American-Statesman
5 Things About Austin’s Weather Worth Worrying Over In October – Austin American-Statesman https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/5-things-about-austins-weather-worth-worrying-over-in-october-austin-american-statesman/ Austin’s blistering summer finally ended in September, a month that saw an end to the triple-digit temperatures that have roasted the city since late May. Typically, October brings waves of storm-producing cold fronts that sometimes lead to flash flooding — yet also replenish critical water sources. But the dryness that has baked backyards and led to frequent wildfires across the state during the past several months is likely to continue through the fall, according to the latest seasonal outlook from the National Weather Service. Here are five things about Austin’s weather that’s worth worrying about in October: 1. It’s nicer outside, but we really need rain. September’s rainfall was Austin’s 11th lowest total on record, according to National Weather Service climate data. The 0.47 inches recorded at Camp Mabry, site of the city’s main weather station, fell far short of the 30-year normal monthly rainfall of 3.45 inches for September. For the year so far, Austin has logged only 18.32 inches of rainfall, which is nearly 9 inches below normal at this point in the calendar. October normally generates, based on a 30-year average, about 3.91 inches of rain for Austin, but the forecast won’t include any moisture for at least the next seven days. In its drought report issued Saturday, the National Weather Service declared that “drought remains entrenched across much of the Hill Country, I-35 corridor and Coastal Plains, and will expand this fall.” Among the weather service’s key findings: Reservoirs and aquifers “still have a lot of room for recovery.” Warmer than normal conditions remain likely, with La Niña expected to persist through winter. Fire weather (dry air, high winds) is expected to become more common this fall. Ranchers and farmers “should prepare for potential drought impacts through winter.” The drought report also documented shortfalls in well levels in the Edwards Aquifer, an underground layer of porous, water-bearing rock sitting beneath Central Texas. The Bexar Index Well J-17, at the time of the report, had a 10-day average well level of was 632 feet, which is about 31.5 feet lower than the historical average for October. On Sunday, the J-17 well was at 632.2 feet, the Edwards Aquifer Authority reported. More:Why a strong La Niña this fall could mean bad news for Austin and Texas drought 2. Drought is worsening again. Data released Thursday by the U.S. Drought Monitor, a joint effort of the National Drought Mitigation Center, the U.S. Agriculture Department and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, show that about 85% of Texas is experiencing drought, an increase from 78.8% of the state last week. Some of the most severe levels of drought remain centered in the Hill Country southwest of Austin and the San Antonio metro area. Drought monitor data indicate that at least 9.8 million Texans live in drought-stricken areas and that 2022 to date is the state’s 11th-driest year in the past 128 years. Exceptional drought — the worst level on the drought monitor’s scale and typified by crop loss and extreme sensitivity to fire danger — rose from 0.6% of Texas last week to about 1.1%. Exceptional drought encompassed about 53.7% of Hays County and about 81.7% of Comal County. According to the crop and weather report from Texas A&M AgriLife released Tuesday, crop producers in the agricultural district that includes the Austin metro area and the Hill Country “were busy preparing for winter wheat and oat planting where adequate subsoil was available.” “Pasture and rangeland conditions were still declining,” the report warned. “Livestock and wildlife were in good condition, but supplemental feeding continued.” 3. You don’t need extreme heat for fire danger With Austin’s 68 days of triple-digit temperatures this year receding into the record books, October typically means the arrival of cooler weather. Forecasters warn that wildfires don’t need heat as much as they rely on dry air and high winds — both of which remain potent this fall. The Texas A&M Forest Service also uses the Keetch-Byram Drought Index to gauge potential wildfire threats in Texas counties. The index ranges from zero, representing a soil saturated with moisture, to 800, which means completely dry soil. Much of the Austin metro area — including Travis, Hays, Bastrop and Caldwell counties — are in the 601 to 700 range, while Williamson County is in the 501 to 600 range. The most recent wildfire in Central Texas, the Mesquite Blossom fire in eastern Hays County, as of Sunday was 95% contained after having burned 39.6 acres, according to the forest service. Of Texas’ 254 counties, 99 have an outdoor burn ban in place, including Travis, Hays and Caldwell counties. 4. La Niña is not going away. Thanks to La Niña, the cooling of the tropical waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean, chances are stronger that Central Texas will see drought expand this fall, weather experts say. Last year’s La Niña autumn was Austin’s sixth-warmest fall season. This year, La Niña already has contributed to Austin’s second-hottest spring on record and the city’s second-hottest summer ever. La Niña is expected to persist into winter, with a 91% chance of lasting to November, before decreasing to a 54% chance from January to March 2023, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center, 5. October is off to a dry start. The weather service’s extended forecast for Austin calls for plenty of daytime sunshine with cloudier skies at night. Monday: Mostly sunny skies with a high temperature of 89 degrees. Partly cloudy at night with a low around 60. Tuesday: Mostly sunny with a high near 89. Partly cloudy at night with a low around 61. Wednesday: Mostly sunny with a high near 90. Partly cloudy at night with a low around 63. Thursday: Mostly sunny with a high near 91. Partly cloudy at night with a low around 67. Friday: Mostly sunny with a high near 90. At night, partly cloudy with a low around 64. Saturday: Mostly sunny with a high near 87.

Noreaster Spawned By Ian Remnants To Bring High Winds Coastal Flooding To The Outer Banks The Virginian-Pilot
Nor’easter Spawned By Ian Remnants To Bring High Winds, Coastal Flooding To The Outer Banks – The Virginian-Pilot https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/noreaster-spawned-by-ian-remnants-to-bring-high-winds-coastal-flooding-to-the-outer-banks-the-virginian-pilot/ The remnants of Hurricane Ian will meet up with a low pressure system early this week, bringing high winds, flooding and hazardous marine conditions to the Outer Banks. The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood warning, a sound-side coastal flood advisory, a wind advisory and a high surf advisory for the Outer Banks Monday through Wednesday, with gale warnings up off the coast. The weather service says low pressure will interact with what’s left of Ian, spawning a new area of deepening low pressure offshore. The nor’easter will bring sustained north winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, forecasters say. A wind advisory is in effect for the entire Outer Banks from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday. The coastal flood warning, in effect from noon Monday through 7 p.m. Wednesday, calls for oceanside inundation 2 to 4 feet of above ground. “Vulnerable oceanfront areas are most at risk and residents and visitors in those areas should be ready to take action to protect property,” Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson said in a news release. Ocean overwash flooding is most likely around high tides Monday, and anyone traveling N.C. 12 on Hatteras Island should expect travel impacts. Residents and visitors in Rodanthe, where three vacation homes have fallen in the ocean this year, should expect “significant additional flooding,” Pearson said. The sound-side coastal flood advisory is in effect from noon Monday to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with 1 to 3 feet of inundation above ground level possible in very low lying areas and roads adjacent to the Albemarle and Pamlico sounds, the weather service said. Dangerous high surf is also expected, with large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet expected in the surf zone from Duck to Cape Hatteras. The Outer Banks experienced high winds and 4 to 6 inches of rain Friday as Hurricane Ian moved through, but escaped serious damage and flooding. Kari Pugh, kari.pugh@virginiamedia.com

A Biography Of SARS-CoV-2 Business Standard
A Biography Of SARS-CoV-2 Business Standard
A Biography Of SARS-CoV-2 – Business Standard https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/a-biography-of-sars-cov-2-business-standard/ Breathless: The Scientific Race to Defeat a Deadly Virus Breathless: The Scientific Race to Defeat a Deadly Virus Author: David Quammen Publisher: Simon & Schuster Page: 406 Price: $28.99 “Nobody,” Donald Trump claimed in a March 2020 address, “had any idea.” He was talking about the Covid virus — which had, seemingly overnight, sparked a global pandemic. In his compelling and terrifying new book, the veteran science journalist David Quammen demonstrates just how much was known — and expected — by infectious disease scientists long before patrons of the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market fell ill in December 2019 with a pneumonia-like virus. Quammen was among those who had long predicted this kind of catastrophe. In 2012 he provided a field guide to the future, Spillover, whose subtitle — Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic — explains exactly what the scientific community had long been expecting. “This is a book about the science of SARS-CoV-2,” he specifies in his new book. He focuses his informed attention on the unsung heroes who dare to wrestle with viruses, those strange entities he calls “the dark angels of evolution.” Human beings are part of a sprawling family of interconnected species who can share illness because they all grew up together. It is our common ancestry and related bodily ecology that makes spillover possible between, say, bats and Earth’s (currently) dominant mammal. Covid is, after all, as natural as a wolf cub or David Attenborough, and its thriller-level rate of evolution is part of its danger. “A virus is a parasite, yes,” writes Quammen, “a genetic parasite, to be more precise, using the resources of other organisms to replicate its own genome.” He demonstrates the sheer weirdness of viruses when he explains how difficult it is to even define them. Quammen follows the story of Covid from scientists’ first awareness of the outbreak in Wuhan through reports of Omicron in late 2021. Alongside the human story, spillover between humans and other animals is a persistent theme. Early in 2020, a dog in Hong Kong tested positive. There were positive cats in Minnesota, two positive hippos in Antwerp, a positive tiger in Knoxville. An outbreak spread through mink farms in the Netherlands. Last year, of the many white-tailed deer sampled in Pennsylvania, 44 per cent tested positive. The persistent danger of spillover between species informs arguments over the virtues and the flaws of both approaches to pandemics: “prediction and prevention versus surveillance and response.” Breathless is so good that I was slow to realise that it lacks the vivid you-are-there details of Spillover. In Breathless, there are no scenes of an intrepid author helping trap macaques at a Sufi shrine or examining a white-footed mouse for Lyme-infested larval ticks. Breathless is a different species of tour de force. Quammen’s research methods have mutated. “I avoided airports for more than two years after Covid-19 exploded,” he says up front, “and I got through the year 2020 on one tank of gas.” Yet these barriers didn’t prevent him from writing a luminous, passionate account of the defining crisis of our time — and the unprecedented international response to it. While many people were begging for mercy from the motley of gods that they also credit with designing this Eden for viruses, epidemiologists and vaccine scientists all over the world raced to save the lives of people they would never meet. Quammen read a library’s worth of books and Zoomed with some 95 sources — epidemiologists, geneticists and public health officials who were closely involved in research and decision-making. “Spoken words are data, in nonfiction,” he says, “and I share scientists’ respect for the sanctity of data.” He provides a mini-biography of each interviewee. Backstage outtakes humanise the participants, as when Quammen asks Anthony Fauci whether Brad Pitt or Kate McKinnon did a better job of satirising him. These glimpses undergird his assertion that science is “a rational process leading toward ever-clearer understanding of the material world, but it’s also an activity performed by humans.” Quammen can’t resist snarking that Trump, “as you may have heard, is not a scientific sophisticate,” but he doesn’t waste much time shooting at such an easy target. He describes Elon Musk as an “entrepreneur and spaceman,” and Alex Azar, the secretary of health and human services, as “pliable.” The “Intelligence Community” is “a bodacious aggregation of intelligences” that includes Space Delta 7 — “within the United States Space Force, whatever that is.” Didier Raoult, the French physician who promoted hydroxychloroquine, Quammen terms a “prideful contrarian.” Hydroxychloroquine did indeed have a history of prescription for malaria, and, he deduces, presumably, “Trump listened to people who listened to people who listened to Didier Raoult.” The importance of the February 2020 announcement that scientists had found in pangolins a close match to the virus infecting humans makes more sense — both scientific and narrative — because Quammen begins with a brief survey course on these armoured-looking, anteater-like creatures. He smoothly interweaves their evolution, the ecological sin of animal trafficking, the imaginary pharmacological virtues of pangolin scales (which are actually mostly keratin) and the contemporary “vogue in urban China for ye wei, or ‘wild tastes.’” “This virus is going to be with us forever,” Quammen warns, with a wealth of data and precedent to support him. We haven’t eradicated polio or measles. “And those viruses have nowhere to hide except within humans.” This one could be cleared from every living human, and still exist in other animals. “Covid-19 won’t be our last pandemic of the 21st century. It probably won’t be our worst.” In our international world, as one scientist tells Quammen, “A disease anywhere is a disease everywhere.” ©2022 The New York Times News Service First Published: Sun, October 02 2022. 22:17 IST

The bug restricts U.S. bank accounts from making withdrawals, deposits or buys on the platform. “We are currently unable to take payments or make withdrawals involving U.S. bank accounts,” Coinbase said in the statement. “Our team is aware of this issue and is working on getting everything back to normal as soon as possible.” Coinbase released two subsequent updates that the issue was being investigated an hour after the first notice. At 8:23 a.m. ET, the exchange said the issue with transactions “has been identified and a fix is being implemented.” Customers can still use debit cards or PayPal to buy crypto during the downtime, according to the statement. Coinbase did not respond to CoinDesk’s request for comment by press time. The issue was not the only problem in the broader crypto ecosystem this weekend. Monkeypox Outbreak May Have Peaked In US, But Still Widespread: Officials – FOX 5 Atlanta https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/monkeypox-outbreak-may-have-peaked-in-us-but-still-widespread-officials-fox-5-atlanta/ Published October 2, 2022 12:46PM What is monkeypox and what are the symptoms? Massachusetts reported a case of monkeypox in a man who recently traveled to Canada on May 18, 2022. FOX Medical Team correspondent Dr. Mike Cirigliano discusses the rare virus. Some U.S. health officials are conceding that monkeypox is probably not going away anytime soon. The disease’s spread is slowing but the virus is so widespread that elimination is unlikely, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. That conclusion was in a recent CDC report, and echoed Friday by Marc Lipsitch, director of science in the agency’s disease-forecasting center. Lipsitch hesitated to say monkeypox is permanently here to stay, but he said it stands to be a continuing threat for the next few years. “It’s in many geographic locations within the country” as well as in other countries, Lipsitch told The Associated Press. “There’s no clear path in our mind to complete elimination domestically.” READ MORE: US health officials warn monkeypox could mutate to resist antiviral drug Tpoxx The virus has mainly spread among gay and bisexual men, though health officials continue to stress that anyone can be infected. It’s important that people at risk take steps to prevent spread and that vaccination efforts continue, Lipsitch said. The CDC report contained some good news: The U.S. outbreak seems to have peaked in early August. The average number of daily cases being reported — fewer than 150 — is about a third what it was reported in the middle of the summer, and officials expect the decline will continue for at least the next several weeks. A sign announcing monkeypox vaccination is setup in Tropical Park by Miami-Dade County and Nomi Health on August 15, 2022 in Miami, Florida. (Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images) Lipsitch attributed the good news to increasing vaccinations, cautious behavior by people at risk and infection-derived immunity in the highest risk populations. Dr. Tom Inglesby, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, agreed that it’s unlikely that spread of monkeypox will stop in the U.S. anytime soon, but he said it’s still possible in the long term. If domestic transmission were stopped, infections may still continue if people catch the virus while traveling internationally, he said. But the declining cases makes it seem like “we’ve turned a real corner.” “The efforts underway are succeeding, and should be continued, if not intensified,” he said. With case numbers going down, this is a good time for local health departments to take a new stab at doing intensive contact tracing to try to stop chains of transmission, he said. Monkeypox is endemic in parts of Africa, where people have been infected through bites from rodents or small animals, but it wasn’t considered a disease that spreads easily among people until May, when infections emerged in Europe and the U.S. READ MORE: Owners spread monkeypox to their dog, doctors report There have been more than 67,000 cases reported in countries that have not historically seen monkeypox. The U.S. has the most infections of any country — more than 25,600. One U.S. death has been attributed to monkeypox. Monkeypox patient says she contracted virus at Georgia gas station Camille Seaton was one of the first confirmed cases of Monkeypox in Georgia. She spoke with LiveNOW from FOX’s Josh Breslow about her experience battling the virus. More than 97% of U.S. cases are men. The vast majority have been men who reported recent sexual contact with other men. Though cases have been declining, the proportion of new cases that have information about recent sexual contact is also down, officials said. That’s causing a growing blind spot about how the virus may be spreading, Lipsitch noted.

Between them, the screens display the status of all 712 beds at the NHS trust, including how many are empty (56) and the number occupied by Covid patients (four). Two years ago these vital statistics would have been collected manually using pencils, rubbers and whiteboards. Now, the hospital leads the NHS in using technology to solve the health service’s fundamental challenge of how to provide care when there are not enough beds. Robin Jerstad, San Antonio Express-NewsShow MoreShow Less Bexar County District Attorney Joe D. Gonzales, a Democrat, took office in 2019 vowing to focus prosecutors on violent crimes and look for ways to keep those accused of nonviolent offenses from sitting in jail and losing jobs and livelihoods because they can’t afford bail. His bid for re-election is being challenged by Republican Marc LaHood, a career defense attorney who says none of these efforts has worked. Gonzales, now 63, positioned himself within a national reform movement, pushed for changes to the bail system and expanded the application of a program called cite-and-release that allows police officers to ticket, rather than arrest, people accused of certain kinds of misdemeanors. It was a reaction, he said, to inequities in the criminal justice system visible in Bexar County and across the country. People “languished in jail” because they were too poor to hire competent counsel or make bond, Gonzales said. “A lot of the reasons that I brought the reforms to the office is to bring that sense of fairness to the office, and I believe that we’ve done that,” he said. His philosophy and that of his opponent could not be more starkly different. LaHood, 44, is casting himself as an ally of a law enforcement community that doesn’t trust Gonzales, and pledges to rebuild that trust. He defeated an experienced prosecutor for the Republican nomination, using that primary campaign to chime in on national politics, including calling President Joe Biden’s border policy “a disaster.” For the general election, LaHood has somewhat lessened his emphasis on GOP themes — except for the notion that crime and criminals are out of control and that illegal immigration brings more of it. “I’ll be blunt — dismissals and not guilties and weak pleas are good for business,” said LaHood, a defense attorney for 15 years. “And, they’re not good for our families.” LaHood is the younger brother of former Bexar County District Attorney Nicholas “Nico” LaHood, who Gonzales defeated in the 2018 Democratic primary. (Nico LaHood has since declared himself a Republican.) District attorney candidate Marc LaHood gets lunch Friday at a San Antonio Police Officers Association picnic at Comanche Park. Robin Jerstad, San Antonio Express-News His brother’s single term in office was marked by enough controversies for Marc LaHood to make a point of saying that he is not the same person and doesn’t share the same views. READ MORE: A district attorney’s bumpy ride Gonzales, for his part, has garnered statewide and national attention with his own political stances. His announcement that he would not pursue charges against those who obtain or enable abortions — under current state law or the more restrictive ones the Legislature might enact next year — was an expression of the discretion every DA has, he said. Gonzlaes told the Express-News Editorial Board that he was prepared for whatever blowback to his abortion stance he might get from state authorities. LaHood said no DA can refuse to prosecute entire categories of crime because of personal beliefs. A father of four, LaHood sprinkled references to families through a recent discussion with the Editorial Board — both his own and as an extended analogy to criminal law, comparing the justice system to a parent who must set clear boundaries and consequences to offenders, or children. If he wins, he will enforce the law in every single case, he said. “The reality is that it’s not a question of if crime is going to affect us, it’s going to touch all of us. But right now, if it touches us, there’s a very good chance we’re not going to get justice,” LaHood said. Gonzales said he, too, once held the traditional philosophy of “throw everybody in jail” when he was a young prosecutor, but today, the sense of justice that defines his priorities also reflects the reality of the county’s resources — how much he can pay his prosecutors and how many inmates can actually fit in that jail. “We cannot effectively prosecute the more serious crimes if we’re spending time on the low-level, nonviolent offenses,” Gonzales said. As of July 25, more than 6,200 people have been cited and avoided arrest under his administration, primarily for misdemeanor marijuana possession, saving the county $4.7 million in booking costs, he said. District Attorney Joe Gonzales speaks during a City Hall press conference to announce a proposal to install “baby boxes” where people can drop off infants anonymously, removing face-to-face interaction in an often difficult moment for parents. Josie Norris, San Antonio Express-News / Staff photographer Officers spend less time on paperwork and more time on the streets, Gonzales said, but added, “The only way this works is all law enforcement has absolute discretion to make the decision in the field.” He said a Bexar County study in 2018 that concluded that recidivism rates for people booked and released from the Bexar County jail averaged near 38 percent, while the rate for those who successfully completed cite-and-release was 8 percent for felonies and 9 percent for misdemeanors. The DA’s office has digitized case data and made it available with online “dashboards,” including felony and misdemeanor family violence cases, the cite-and-release program, and information on magistration and the Criminal Trial Division . “We put that midterm report out because we wanted people to know what we do,” Gonzales said. RELATED: DA, county judge move to combat family violence after E-N series According to his website, LaHood primarily practices state and federal criminal defense, including trials in both court systems, and has represented clients in more than 50 Texas counties. LaHood blamed Gonzales for rising local crime and for prosecutor turnover in his office, saying the DA’s progressive policies have demoralized them. Gonzales sa...

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story. Hi, I’m the Brainerd Dispatch. I started working a few days before Christmas in 1881 and became a daily paper two years later. Manchester City Vs. Manchester United Score: Live Updates From Premier League Derby At Etihad Stadium – CBS Sports https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/manchester-city-vs-manchester-united-score-live-updates-from-premier-league-derby-at-etihad-stadium-cbs-sports/ Hat tricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden lifted Manchester City to an emphatic 6-3 win over Manchester United on Sunday in Premier League action. City were in full flow from start to finish as Bernardo Silva and Kevin de Bruyne carved the United team apart, setting up the attack to feast in the Manchester derby.  The Red Devils would get a consolation goal in the second half via Antony, but it wouldn’t be enough to spark a comeback when they were already behind by four heading into the break. Cristiano Ronaldo began the match on the bench and remained there as an unused substitute. Anthony Martial scored two late goals for the visitors, one being a penalty kick. Haaland now has 14 Premier League goals as he takes his scoring streak in all competitions to eight consecutive matches for City. The Norway international has also now become the first player to score a hat trick in three consecutive home matches in league history. City stand alone as the only team in the league without a loss and move within one point behind Arsenal in the league table. See New Posts Pinned What a win for City While the second half was one to forget, you can forgive Manchester City for taking their feet off the gas after being ahead by four at the break. Anthony Martial’s return could be key for Manchester United after he scored a brace from the bench but that couldn’t match hat tricks from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland to bring the match within reach. Pinned Martial from the spot He fires home an emphatic penalty to bring United within three goals as Cancelo clipped his ankle to concede the penalty. At least United have a 3-2 scoring advantage in the second half but it won’t be enough after being in such a deep hole heading into the break. Pinned Anthony Martial is back and hits the back of the net Not a single celebration from Manchester United as bringing the match within 6-2 isn’t anything that the team should be happy about. Pep Guardiola will be disappointed with the performance from his defense in the second half. Pinned That’s some duo leading the line  Pinned Some context on Haaland’s scoring The Norwegian now has 14 Premier League goals this season. Chelsea have 10, Manchester United nine. Indeed they are two of the 14 teams who have scored fewer than Haaland so far this season. After eight games he has more Premier League career goals than Luka Modric and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Another 252 and he will have caught up with Alan Shearer. Reckon he can do it by the end of the season? Pinned It’s a double hat trick! This time Phil Foden gets his Shaw kept him onside as Foden looks to keep up with Haaland. Pinned Manchester United has improved in the second half… .. It’s a consolation but the team has created more chances even scoring a goal in the second period but at what point will ten Hag start Casemiro in league matches instead of bringing him off of the bench? Pinned Hat trick Haaland! There’s no stopping Haaland as he scores when he wants. City are in top form but conceding five should cause worry for Manchester United. Pinned It’s a goal for United! Almost out of nothing Antony placed a great shot into the corner and Ederson had no chance. It’s his second goal in a United shirt. Pinned Keane pulls no punches Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane was utterly scathing of the current incumbents of the shirt he wore with such distinction in United’s golden era. He’s not one to pull his punches at the best of times but this feels remarkably extreme, even for Keane. “If we needed a reminder of how good Man City are, we’re getting it,” he said on Sky Sports. “But oh my god, Man Utd. It’s like the game is too big for them. I almost can’t believe what I’m watching. “Maybe a lack of belief is behind it. It’s been easy for Man City.  As poor as it’s been defensively, their passing has been sloppy, there are gaps everywhere., the lads in midfield are getting pulled everywhere. “I can’t believe how bad Man Utd have been. It’s about pride and personality, but they’re not showing it.” Pinned Changes coming for Manchester United Luke Shaw will enter for Malacia who is on a yellow card but the change that isn’t being made — bringing on Casemiro — is interesting as well. Can United get a consolation goal? Pinned How the first half went for the away side Pinned And make that a brace for Foden Haaland assists this one as Foden runs into the box for a poachers finish. It’s 4-0 before the half as things couldn’t be going any worse for ten Hag. Pinned It’s not all good for City though Kyle Walker will leave the match with an injury being replaced by Sergio Gomez. With Guardiola already having a bench short on defensive reinforcements, another injury isn’t something that was needed today. Pinned Just over three between the first and second goal Pinned Aaah… I had just begun forming an idea about a post on why getting that second goal conceded might not be the worst news for United as we’ve so often seen City drop down a few gears and cruise to victory. But then that goal there looked like the hosts testing themselves, trying to score the most extravagant goal they can. That wasn’t a bad effort! Pinned Blink and you just might miss it, 3-0 City It’s Haaland again as he has a brace. These yellows have made a difference as Jack Grealish had all the space in the world to set that up and Varane couldn’t keep up to keep Haaland from scoring. Pinned His first derby goal It was barely over the line but Erling Haaland has put Manchester City ahead 2-0. United tried to block the shot from inside De Gea’s net but it wasn’t enough. Only 35 minutes in but it feels like this match could be over. Pinned Struggling Sancho The winger is one of many players who is just finding the on ball pressure coming from City to be too much to bear. He is trying, unsuccessfully, to thread the needles and get United into positions where they can attack but when he does so he often ends up handing possession to the opposition in the heart of the pitch. Pinned Add Malacia to the book Another United giveaway leads to another chance for City. Malacia comments a foul to make sure it didn’t end in a goal but Manchester United now have both fullbacks on yellow cards, they could be down to ten before the half. Pinned Can’t come much closer to scoring than that! Gundogan was overtop of a free kick for Manchester City and rattles De Gea’s post. It’s a game of inches but United again can consider themselves lucky that City aren’t ahead 3-0 within 20 minutes. Pinned Luke Shaw is warming up already Could Erik ten Hag be looking to make an early sub in the match? Considering Dalot’s early yellow and United’s inability to contain Manchester City within the first 15 minutes, changes could be coming before this match gets out of hand. Pinned City make the hard things look easy Pinned It was coming, 1-0 Manchester City There goes Phil Foden following a cross from Bernardo Silva. What a hit from the English star. He goes with a front-post run and curls a ball past defender Raphael Varane and into the net. De Gea had no chance. Not sure where the United defense was but this could get ugly quickly. Pinned Like a cheap suit City are all over United, a flurry of early chances as first De Gea then the all action McTominay deny De Bruyne and Silva on the goal line. There was plenty of talk beforehand about the pressure that would be on the City defense but for United to actually exert any they need to have the ball. That looks a pretty unlikely prospect so far. Pinned How did that stay out of the net? It’s Grealish again creating chances as Haaland’s header went across the face of goal finding no one. United can consider themselves lucky that the match is still level but they’re dropping too deep already giving City too much room to work with. Pinned Didn’t take long for the first yellow card Inside two minutes Diogo Dalot has been carded for upending Jack Grealish. Looking to prevent this derby from getting out of hand early it seems but that yellow could loom large with Grealish’s threat on the dribble. Pinned Five minutes until kickoff Manchester City need points to keep pace with Arsenal atop the league while Manchester United want a victory in a massive derby match. Pinned Pinned The plan for Manchester United City’s lineup will leave them susceptible to counter attacking soccer if Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes can link play with the front three during the match. Marcus Rashford being fit enough to start is critical for Erik ten Hag because, without him, Ronaldo wouldn’t have the speed atop the line to make City pay on the break but how United will stop Erling Haaland will be the biggest question today. Already taking the league by storm scoring in seven consecutive matches for Manchester City, Haaland has an astonishing 14 goals in 10 appearances. Can Martinez and Varane stop him from hitting 15? Alan Cross Has Seen The Future Of Music And Says Its All About Web3 And The Metaverse Global News
Alan Cross Has Seen The Future Of Music And Says It’s All About ‘Web3’ And The Metaverse – Global News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/alan-cross-has-seen-the-future-of-music-and-says-its-all-about-web3-and-the-metaverse-global-news/ SINGAPORE — If you want to kill a conversation quickly, just bring up words like “metaverse,” “crypto,” and “blockchain.” Eyes glaze over followed by some version of “Oh, look at the time. I must go.” I can relate. “Metaverse” conjures up vague notions of whatever Facebook is building and involves wearing a heavy and expensive headset. “Crypto” is some weird virtual currency Matt Damon keeps trying to sell us and may or may not include a thing called Bitcoin. And “blockchain?” Who knows? Here’s another term you can use to execute any conversation: “Web3.” Ready or not, this is where the internet is headed. Hold on. Let’s back up. The age of the internet is entering its third major era of evolution. Web 1.0 involved everyone building websites and publishing content. Think about all the gaudy, basic websites that littered the internet a couple of decades ago. Communication was almost exclusively one-way, from the publisher to the public. Content was pushed out. Story continues below advertisement We’re currently in the 2.0 era, a time controlled by big tech companies like Google, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat — and all the streaming music platforms. Web 2.0 allows users to publish and communicate with each other — at least to a limited extent, anyway, through leaving comments and maybe direct messaging. More importantly, though, Web 2.0 has allowed these companies to become immensely wealthy by using the personal data we happily provide them by using their free services. Data is the new oil. In fact, data is now the most valuable commodity in the known universe. This is a problem because it means that by providing these companies with our data, we’re all basically working for them. For free. Think about it: When you go online, you become a data miner providing the tech companies with the rich, raw material they use to sell stuff back to you. Canadians are online more than six hours a day, nearly two hours of which are spent on social media. In South Korea, the average person spends 10 hours a day online. Not only is this actual unpaid labour, but we also don’t know what data these companies have on us. And they won’t say. Plus they keep finding new algorithmic ways for us to provide them with even more data which they then use to sell us even more stuff. Web 2.0 companies hold all the cards. Story continues below advertisement Big Tech is making trillions from our work and isn’t sharing in any of the proceeds. If this were physical labour, it would be called “slavery.” But because data isn’t framed in the same way, it’s completely legal. This seems … wrong, doesn’t it? Enter Web3. I’m going to use a bunch of words here — I think correctly — that define what Web3 is: Decentralized public ownership of property in the online world that’s tracked and enforced by blockchain technology. It involves things like metaverses (yes, plural), cryptocurrencies, digital tokens, and NFTs, things that will allow internet users to become owners. Instead of giving up our personal information using free apps for nothing in return, we will participate in the creation, operation, and governance of many of the things that make up the internet. I just spent a week at the All That Matters conference in Singapore where people from the world of music, eSports, traditional sports, broadcasting, gaming, and marketing gathered to discuss this new era of the internet. At this point, we could dive very deep into the weeds and get extraordinarily technical. Instead, let’s just skip ahead to some examples of how this will affect music. Some are already calling this the musicverse. And it sounds pretty cool. Story continues below advertisement First, no one is building a capital-M-one-size-fits-all Metaverse akin to what we saw with The Oasis in the book Ready Player One. A better way to think of what’s coming is many, many different metaverses that offer 3-D interactivity within many different artists in many different ways. 19:01 Inside the Metaverse Inside the Metaverse – May 7, 2022 We’re already seeing the debut of some community-building apps like Drrops which allow community building between artists and fans. Headed by Our Lady Peace singer Raine Maida, Drrops was built with the idea of making it possible for artists to communicate directly with fans and vice versa without any sort of social media intermediary to skim away all the data. Bands will be able to learn more about their audiences while fans will be able to share exclusive opportunities, experiences, and merchandise, both real and virtual. Fans will be able to commune with each other, too, enhancing a sense of community. Trending Stories For example, superfans could be offered a digital token — think of it as a virtual ticket — that will give them access to special things from the artist. Or the artist could sit backstage chatting with fans arriving at the venue, asking what songs they might like to see on the setlist that night. Individual fans might be rewarded with a shout-out from the stage. Story continues below advertisement Web3 will also impact touring. Going on the road for months or even years at a time is expensive, exhausting, and bad for the environment. One solution might be to have the artist set up in one location. If you want to see them live, you can but tickets will be very expensive because that will become an increasingly exclusive experience. But if you can’t be there in person, that’s fine because the metaverse has no constraints of time, space, and even identity (more on that in just a sec). You’ll be able to enjoy the performance online in a VR/metaverse way for an exponentially cheaper price. Instead of getting 15,000 fans to pay $200+ each for a ticket in city after city after city, the artist will be able to stay in one place, playing in front of maybe a few thousand (or perhaps even just a few hundred fans) each night while simultaneously performing for, say, five million people in a metaverse who have paid $5 each. One such gig could theoretically gross $25 million and reach far more people in a much more efficient way. 5:14 Privacy in the metaverse Privacy in the metaverse – Jul 10, 2022 That’s not pie-in-the-sky thinking, either. Artists like Marshmello have already held digital concerts in venues like Fortnite in front of 10 million fans who not only got to watch and dance (via avatars) but were also able to buy merch. BTS has a virtual concert that reached one million fans in 191 countries. Not all at once, mind you. But time and space are meaningless in the metaverse. Imagine how this could be scaled for a festival like Glastonbury or Coachella. Story continues below advertisement Or how about this: I predict that someone will inevitably recreate the Woodstock ’69 experience in a musicverse. See what I mean about things being freed from time and space? At the same time, the artist will have a chance to build loyalty and community in entirely new ways. For example, back in 2019, Billie Eilish offered fans an on-demand tour of her bedroom, the place where many of her songs were born. Or maybe you’ll be able to get into a recording studio to collaborate with an artist on a session or remix. In this case, you become a creator of the content with the artist. Timbaland has already demonstrated this. These are examples of how the musicverse will allow artists to provide their fans with an unlimited amount of attention and in ways not available at any price in meatspace. Talk about strengthening the ties between artists and fans, right? On the business and accounting side, Web3 will also allow for much more efficient payment of royalties. The blockchain will keep track of who owns a song and who needs to be paid for a stream or a sale at a level of accuracy and security that far exceeds what we have today. Fans will be able to own digital property. Let’s say you want to purchase a particular seat in a metaverse concert venue. That seat is yours and no one can ever sit in it. Later, If you want, you may be able to sell that property for a profit. But because all purchases are connected to the blockchain — the public ledger of all transactions and tracker or ownership — such sales and purchases will be tracked and policed. When such a sale takes place, the original creator of that digital property — say a rare piece of music originally made available only to superfans — will get a piece of the action on the resale. Try that with the sale of used vinyl. Story continues below advertisement If all this seems totally foreign to you, you need to spend some time speaking to any Gen Z music fan. They’re already engaging in entertainment this way. Around 79 per cent of young music fans are already okay with seeing their favourite artists in the metaverse. And there’s more. About 65 per cent of Gen Z say that how you present yourself online is more important than how you present yourself in real life. Let that sink in for a second. Remember how we used to project our identities to the world by wearing a specific artist’s T-shirt? (Here’s where I should point out that one in three fans of fashion who are aware of Web3 opportunities have already purchased some kind of digital fashion.) Gen Alpha, kids born since 2010, are going to take this even further. They will grow up in a world where virtual creators are the new celebrities. We’re already seeing that with TikTok influencers. That, though, is just the tip of the iceberg. And here’s what I find fascinating and rather concerning for Canadians: Web3 is already rooted deeply in Asia, which is far ahead of North America and Western Europe. Digital citizens in China, Thailand, Indonesia, and India are already deep i...

Trainers Say You’re Encouraging Your Dog To Behave Badly If You’re Doing Any Of These Things – Mic https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/trainers-say-youre-encouraging-your-dog-to-behave-badly-if-youre-doing-any-of-these-things-mic/ We only recommend products we love and that we think you will, too. We may receive a portion of sales from products purchased from this article, which was written by our Commerce team. If you own a dog, it’s safe to say you love the little ball of fluff. It’s easy to want to indulge your pup’s every single whim and spoil them rotten — but sometimes, doing so could actually encourage bad behavior in your dog. Andy Ramshaw, the dog trainer and owner of Venture Dog Training, tells Mic, “I don’t believe we should correct our dog’s behavior but should be looking for the cause of the behaviors we don’t like. What people consider bad behavior is usually normal canine behavior that is inconvenient for humans.” Ramshaw continues, “So, to reduce instances of such behavior we need to ensure our dog’s mental and physical needs are met on a daily basis. This includes adequate food, water and shelter, along with opportunities to sniff, lick, chew, and possibly bark and dig holes. These needs can be met naturally in the outdoors on a walk or products can be bought to replicate them at home.” What problems may you be causing and how can you course correct? I reached out to dog trainers and experts to learn their advice for better-behaving pets — and these tips are things we could all learn from. 01 Problem: You let your dog jump up on furniture Solution: Block them from jumping up with this couch defender You almost have to respect how persistent dogs are when trying to get on your furniture without you noticing, but Dr. Amanda Takiguchi, a veterinarian, says the dog should ask and receive permission first. That’s where the Couch Defender comes in handy. The coils pop up to leave no room for your pet to jump onto the sofa when you’re not home. When not using, just collapse and clip it closed for compact storage under your furniture. 02 Problem: Your dog pulls on your leash Solution: Walk your dog with this harness that goes across their chest Dr. Takiguchi says letting the dog pull you when on a leash is another bad behavior you want to curb, but you also want to make sure you’re not being too rough. This harness is unlike others because it goes around your pup’s chest instead of their neck. In addition, the extra front loop is what assures that gradual pressure is being applied when you give a little tug, while discouraging your dog from pulling. They’ll be comfy, and you’ll feel safe. 03 Problem: Your dog barks at children & other pups because of stress Solution: Give them this snuggle toy with a soothing real-feel heartbeat Dr. Takiguchi wants everyone to know that allowing your pup to bark and growl at others is not cute — no matter how high-pitched their little squeal is. If your dog is barking because of high stress or possible anxiety, you can help them stay calm with this snuggle toy. Inside this cuddle-worthy toy, there’s both a heat pack and a gadget mimicking the feel of a real heartbeat to make them feel like they’re actually relaxing with a friend. 04 Problem: You let your dog “protect” you when others are around Solution: Set up an extendable pet gate with a small door Dr. Takiguchi explains that “[letting] the dog ‘protect’ the owner thinking that’s what it’s doing when instead the dog is claiming you for himself/herself” is a big mistake. “Commonly seen when someone is holding a small dog and the dog starts to attack anyone that comes close. This is not cute, not safe. Someone is going to get hurt,” she says. Whether you have another small dog in the house or guests coming over for dinner, there are always certain times when a pet gate comes in handy. This one has rust-resistant panels that extend from 29 to 36.5 inches wide. And if you still want to make sure your smaller dog or cat that one dog likes to growl at can get to its food, don’t worry, there’s a small door in the center that can be left open. 05 Problem: You repeat commands your dog is ignoring Solution: Read up on the 5-week training program from this book Dr. Takiguchi says that a huge mistake is expecting immediate response from a command or giving up after repeating a command that your dog is ignoring. It actually teaches the dog that they don’t have to respect you. For more helpful pointers, grab this dog training book with tips from Dawn Sylvia-Stasiewicz, who trained Bo Obama. This five-week program focuses on positive reinforcement to get rid of any bad habits your pet has picked up instead of forcing your dog to behave. 06 Problem: Your dog tends to get a little too curious Solution: Use an extra-long leash to give them freedom while maintaining control In order to give your dog the opportunity to sniff and explore while still having control, Andy Ramshaw, dog trainer and owner of Venture Dog Training, recommends this extra-long leash. He explains, “I recommend one 30-foot long that you can put onto your dog in a safe environment like the woods or a beach. They give your dog the opportunity to sniff and explore while the owner still has control. Useful if the dog has poor recall.” The durable nylon with reinforced stitching is sure to outlast any cotton alternatives and is available in 15, 20, 30, 50, and 100 feet. 07 Problem: You don’t give your dog anything to chew Solution: Give them this hard rubber toy you can stuff with treats Chewing is a natural instinct in dogs, and to help them do this habit in a productive way, Ramshaw has a handy standby: Kongs. “These are hard rubber chews that can be filled with the dog’s daily food portion,” he says. “Feeding this way gives the dog an opportunity to chew (fulfilling a natural calming function) whilst also rewarding the dog for lying down, chewing, not barking and being calm. They can also be given in a crate to teach the dog to enjoy time alone in a crate.” This Kong is in a unique ribbon shape, and you can stuff different treats and kibble in the four grippy compartments. The durable rubber will last a long time and can even stand up to the toughest chewers. 08 Problem: You feed your dog, and they finish the food too fast Solution: Encourage your dog to lick on this slow-feeding mat To keep your dog feeling and eating good, place one of their meals on this slow-feeding mat. This encourages slow eating and licking, which Ramshaw says “is repetitive and is calming for dogs.” The act of licking around the flexible surface also generates saliva and helps protect their teeth and gums. 09 Problem: You let your dog get bored, and they get destructive Solution: Hide treats in this snuffle mat to give them a safe way to “hunt” The long strands of fleece on this snuffle mat are meant to hide your dog’s treats to create a fun sniffing and digging game for them. In addition to being a great source of entertainment, Ramshaw says it can actually also stimulate the senses. “This replicates the natural behavior of sniffing and scavenging for dogs and can be an excellent way to exercise their brain. Mental exercise is twice as tiring as physical exercise for dogs,” he explains. The size of the mat can be adjusted to best fit your dog. 10 Problem: Your dog chews on things Solution: Give them some bully sticks that remove tartar & plaque These bully sticks are a sneaky way to care for your dog’s teeth without making them sit through a brushing session, all while encouraging them to chew on something they should gnaw on. Ramshaw recommends “bully sticks, dried pigs ears, raw non-weight bearing bones, yak’s milk chews and antlers” for healthy, consumable chew toys. These bully sticks are full of protein, vitamins, and minerals. And they’re in a shape that acts as a tartar and plaque remover for teeth. The pure beef sticks are made with no preservatives or artificial flavors so you can rest assured that your pup is getting the best. 11 Problem: Your dog has a tendency to pull on leashes Solution: Put this reflective, Y-shaped harness on them If your dog has a tendency to pull when they walk, don’t allow them to get hurt. Instead, clip on this harness. “A harness is preferable to a collar because if the dog has a tendency to pull, the pressure caused will be distributed across the dog’s chest and back, which are strong. Rather than its neck that contains softer organs,” Ramshaw notes. Th intentional Y-shaped design in addition to the bungee clip that absorbs shock makes it much gentler than other leash models. The soft neoprene fabric is also reflective to keep your furry friend visible and safe when on walks at night. 12 Problem: You engage with your dog when they’re being naughty Solution: Reward them for being calm with these pork liver treats Patrik Holmboe, head vet for Cooper Pet Care, is an avid believer in not engaging with your dog when they partake in bad behavior. “A common example would be the large dog that goes crazy and jumps on their owner (or guests) when they enter the house. The owner doesn’t want this, so they loudly exclaim ‘No!’ and push the dog away. They think they are telling the dog not to do that action, but in actuality they are giving the dog what it wants: attention! And being pushed is a game, and fun!” he explains. What should you do instead? “The proper response instead in this situation would be to ignore the dog (not giving it what it wants) until it settles down and is calm — and only then heap on the praise, attention, and treats.” When it comes to rewards, consider these small training treats. Their tiny size makes them perfect to give throughout the day without having your pup overindulge, so you can give your pup a small token when they’re laying down calmly. Made with no artificial flavors or corn, each pack is made with real pork liver and comes with 500 pieces. 13 Problem: You create ...

While Bitcoin and many other digital assets are tanking, some coins are proving to be extremely resilient in the face of current market volatility.  One coin that is climbing at an amazing rate, even as the rest of the market crashes is RBIS, the token fueling the ArbiSmart financial services ecosystem. In the last 3 weeks alone, it has gone up 300% and it is continuing to rise.  So, what has insulated RBIS from the bear market and why are analysts projecting a massive jump to over 30 times the current value by the end of 2022?  Consistent Profits in a Downturn Probably the main reason for the rising RBIS price is that the ArbiSmart ecosystem offers bear-resistant utilities that enable users to make the same, reliable profit in a downturn or an upturn.   First up, ArbiSmart offers automated crypto arbitrage. This is a low-risk investment strategy that makes money from temporary differences in the price of a crypto asset, across exchanges. These price disparities occur equally regularly, whichever direction the market is moving. ArbiSmart’s automated system, tracks hundreds of assets on multiple exchanges, searching for temporary price differences.  It buys the asset on the exchange offering the lowest price before instantly selling it on the exchange where the price is highest. Users just deposit funds, and the algorithm does the rest, generating profits of up to 147% a year. The exact profit percentage is based on the amount deposited and can be calculated prior to investing.  ArbiSmart also offers another way for crypto owners to make a profit, even during a crash. In July of this year, ArbiSmart introduced its interest-generating wallet that offers annual rates, unmatched anywhere else, of up to 147%, which remain the same in bull or bear markets. The wallet supports 25 different FIAT and cryptocurrencies and offers a variety of savings options. Wallet holders can lock funds in short-term savings plans, lasting as little as a month, or in long-term plans lasting up to 5 years, with a higher return, the longer the funds are locked up.  The interest rate is based on the wallet-holders account level, which is determined by how much RBIS they own. More RBIS means a better return on balances in every supported currency, from Bitcoin, Ether and Shiba Inu to Euro, Pound Sterling, and USD. The best rates are earned on RBIS balances though users can still increase their earnings, even if they choose not to convert their currency into the native token, by just receiving the daily interest in RBIS.  An Expanding Suite of Services  The ArbiSmart development team has been hard at work expanding the ecosystem throughout the bear run and these efforts are set to continue until the end of the year.  In late Q3 and in Q4 ArbiSmart will be introducing a mobile application for earning, buying, storing, and exchanging crypto.  It will also be launching a decentralized protocol, where yield farmers will be able to provide loans and liquidity in return for up to 190,000% APY as well as 0.3% of the fee charged for each trade. The protocol will also offer a unique twist, with gamification features that enable participants to score points and increase their annual percentage yields. This winter, ArbiSmart will also be introducing an NFT marketplace, as well as launching its own one-of-a-kind collection of unique digital items. These will be closely followed, in 2023, by the launch of a professional cryptocurrency exchange, as well as a play-to-earn, gaming metaverse, where participants will be able to purchase, develop, and sell virtual real-estate. All these RBIS utilities will be interconnected, so if an RBIS owner uses additional utilities they will receive better returns. For example, an ArbiSmart NFT will serve as a digital art investment, while also serving as a point -booster, generating higher scores for yield farmers and increasing their annual yields.  When using the ArbiSmart ecosystem participants will be earning profits from various RBIS utilities, such as staking, liquidity provision, and arbitrage trading. They can them massively increase those profits by locking the earnings in a wallet savings plan for a chosen timeframe, making a secondary source of income, with no extra effort. A Steady Upward Trajectory Through this year’s prolonged bear trend, the arbitrage system and the wallet have provided a secure haven, making them popular investment options for crypto owners. Meanwhile, as the wallet gains momentum, and more people open savings plans, an increasing amount of RBIS will be locked up, leaving circulation and limiting the available supply.  Since all utilities in the ArbiSmart ecosystem require the use of RBIS, with the addition of each new service the token demand will rise. The supply is forever restricted, capped at 450 million RBIS, so as demand rises, the supply will shrink, pushing the price higher and generating huge capital gains. RBIS is on a steadily rising trajectory, even as other coins crash. To start profiting from your Bitcoin, whichever way the market shifts next, open a wallet right now!

Statue Of Missouri’s Harry S. Truman Dedicated At The U.S. Capitol – Iowa Capital Dispatch https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/statue-of-missouris-harry-s-truman-dedicated-at-the-u-s-capitol-iowa-capital-dispatch/ WASHINGTON — The eldest grandson of President Harry S. Truman pulled down a black cloak to unveil a towering bronze statue of his late grandfather during a ceremony Thursday at the U.S. Capitol to dedicate the sculpture honoring the 33rd president. “My grandfather was a modest man,” Clifton Truman Daniel said. “And, frankly, slightly embarrassed by statues.” The statue of Truman, known for making some of the most crucial decisions in American history, both abroad and domestically, will reside in the heart of the Capitol, part of the National Statuary Hall Collection of 100 statues. Each state gets two, and Truman will represent his home state of Missouri. A statue of former President Harry S. Truman was unveiled in the U.S. Capitol rotunda on Sept. 29, 2022. (Photo by Ariana Figueroa/States Newsroom) The front inscription of his statue is carved with Truman’s well-known motto: “The Buck Stops Here.” Missouri Republican Sen. Roy Blunt said he often thinks of the difficult decisions Truman had to make as president, such as ending World War II, facilitating the ratification of the United Nations charter and transitioning the country from a time of war to peace. “It’s great for us today to see him now in the building he loved, in a democracy that he cherished, in a world that he made so much to design and create and make it what it is today,” Blunt said. The 7-foot, 1,000-pound bronze statue resides on a 3-foot pedestal in the Rotunda, which is a large, circular room in the center of the Capitol. The statue is nestled between historical paintings of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the Surrender of General Burgoyne at Saratoga, New York. The Truman statue joins those depicting nine other presidents in the Rotunda. The others are Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Ulysses Grant, Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, Andrew Jackson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford. The Truman statue replaces one of founding father Alexander Hamilton, which staff relocated to the Hall of Columns. Years of work The Truman Library Institute — the non-profit fundraising arm of the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Independence, Missouri — and Missouri lawmakers had lobbied for the former president to take his place among various American political icons in the Statuary Hall Collection that is visited by millions of tourists, and frequently passed by congressional staff, lawmakers and journalists. The institute raised about $400,000 for the transportation and installation and commission by artist Tom Corbin for the Truman statue. “This statue proves that government can work, and work quickly,” Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II, a Missouri Democrat, said. “This only took us 20 years.” The crowd of 100 or so chuckled. Cleaver touted Truman’s civil rights legacy. The president desegregated the military, was the first president to meet with the NAACP, established the President’s Committee on Civil Rights and signed an executive order that prohibits race-based employment discrimination in the federal government. “President Truman truly helped create the Black middle class that enabled African Americans to advance and participate in the prosperity of this great nation,” Cleaver said. Before he was president, Truman served in the U.S. Senate representing Missouri. President Franklin D. Roosevelt tapped him as his vice presidential running mate in 1944. Eighty-two days into his term as vice president, Truman was called to the White House, where he would learn of Roosevelt’s death and be sworn in as president. During his term, he would shape the country’s foreign policy for decades to come. He formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and facilitated the United Nations charter, and established global alliances to deter the spread of communism. Domestically, he signed into law the National Security Act of 1947, creating the CIA, Air Force, Joint Chiefs of Staff and National Security Council, and also paved the way for national health care. Statue collections Due to overcrowding — and aesthetic preferences — only one statue from each state is placed in Statuary Hall. Iowa’s statue in the hall is of Dr. Norman Borlaug, Nobel Peace Prize winner credited with saving a billion lives through his development of new wheat varieties. The House of Representatives used to convene in Statuary Hall, but lawmakers moved into a bigger chamber, leaving the room empty. Former Rep. Justin S. Morrill, Democrat of Vermont, in April 1864 proposed that each state be allowed a statute in the hall, which Congress then passed into law three months later. “However, the aesthetic appearance of the Hall began to suffer from overcrowding until, in 1933, the situation became unbearable,” according to the Architect of the Capitol’s website. In 1933 Congress passed a resolution stating that each state is allowed one statue in the hall. The other 50 statues can be found in various locations such as the Rotunda, the Senate Wing, the Crypt or the Capitol Visitor Center. Truman will replace Missouri’s statue of Democratic Sen. Thomas Hart Benton, who served from 1821 to 1851. Benton was somewhat of a hothead. He dueled President Andrew Jackson, leaving Jackson, then a general during the War of 1812, with a bullet in his arm. Benton was also nearly shot on the Senate floor on the cusp of the Civil War in 1850 during a heated exchange with Mississippi Sen. Henry Foote. “I have no pistols! Let him fire!,” Benton said, according to Senate archives. “Stand out of the way and let the assassin fire!” Foote never fired. Benton advocated for Missouri to become a slave state during its early formation in 1821, believing the issue would divide the nation. His views changed in 1835, not wanting slavery to spread, but also not wanting it to be abolished, according to the State Historical Society of Missouri. Benton’s statue will be moved to the State Historical Society of Missouri, in Columbia. The second statue in the National Statuary Hall Collection representing Missouri is of Francis Preston Blair Jr. The state of Missouri gave the statue to the collection in 1899. Blair was a lawyer from St. Louis who was instrumental in keeping Missouri part of the Union during the Civil War, where he served as a major general. Known for his anti-slavery views, he served in the Missouri Legislature from 1852 through 1856, where he opposed the extension of slavery and urged the South to gradually abolish slavery. Blair unsuccessfully ran as a Democratic candidate for vice president in 1868. He became a U.S. senator in 1870, filling a vacant seat, but lost his reelection bid in 1872. He died in 1875 and was buried at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis. Our stories may be republished online or in print under Creative Commons license CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. Rumor: You May Soon Need YouTube Premium To Watch 4K Video – Ghacks https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/rumor-you-may-soon-need-youtube-premium-to-watch-4k-video-ghacks/ Google experimented on YouTube to increase the company’s revenue on the platform recently. After running tests with up to 10 unskippable ads before videos, users on Reddit report that YouTube limited 4K video resolutions on their devices, prompting them to upgrade to YouTube Premium to unlock that, previously unlocked, option. Reddit user Ihatesmokealarms published a screenshot of the YouTube application that limits 2160p playback to YouTube Premium. Google did not provide a comment on whether the change is rolling out to all customers on the platform or if it is a limited experiment, just like the 10 unskippable ads experiments run in August 2022. A check on our devices returned no such limitation in the YouTube application on Android, iOS or desktop devices. Some users replied to the thread stating that they experienced the limitation as well, while others stated that they could select 4K video on YouTube without any issues. You need to select Settings in any video and then the Quality option that is listed there to display the available resolutions that are supported. Not all videos on YouTube support 4K, as it depends on the source file whether that is supported. Note: we recommend third-party apps like NewPipe when it comes to watching videos on YouTube. They are ad-free and include many nice-to-have features that YouTube apps do not support or limit to Premium customers. The recent experiments appear to have a single goal: increase the number of Premium subscribers. At $11.99 per month, YouTube Premium is more expensive than the majority of streaming media services, including Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, or Netflix (the Basic plan at least). For Google, it means increasing a steady stream of revenue, regardless of how advertising is developing in the coming years. For now, Google seems intent to annoy the hell out of regular YouTube visitors and users to get them to see the beauty of YouTube Premium. Another approach could be to increase the value of YouTube Premium for subscribers instead, which could do wonders for the perception that users have regarding YouTube and the Premium offering.
