Nicolet National Bank Senior Spotlight: Kyra Brosig, Green Bay East Tennis And Bowling – The Press-Times https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/nicolet-national-bank-senior-spotlight-kyra-brosig-green-bay-east-tennis-and-bowling-the-press-times/ By Greg Bates Sports Editor Name: Kyra Brosig Parents: Danielle and Nick Brosig Activities: Tennis and bowling Kyra has been a varsity tennis player for four years. She started out as a doubles player, but by sophomore year, she was competing in singles. Kyra has been the No. 1 singles player for East for the last two years. She’s also a captain on the bowling team, which competes during winter season. You played No. 1 singles as a junior and then this year as well. What did last year’s experience teach you? “It was very different switching from doubles and sometimes playing singles to strictly singles, it was a lot more work that I had to put in to actually get points in the rounds. In the end, it made me better, a better player jumping from people who were somewhat my level to people who were better because it pushed me to become better.” Are you a lot better of a player this year than last year? “Yes, I am, by far. Last year was the first time actually that I started winning games and then I started winning more games this year as well.” Why do you like to play tennis? “Because it makes me take my mind off of everything else and just focus on hitting the ball. Sometimes life outside of the court is just too hectic, so it just really makes me bring more of my thoughts in.” What makes you a good tennis player? “That’s a hard one, I don’t know. I think it’s my ability to laugh at every mistake I make and be able to learn from it and not let it get me down.” What’s the best part of your game? “I’m really good at my backhand. I can hit a really good one that is really angled so the opponent can’t get it. But my forehand is also really good when it wants to be. It kind of switches between the two.” Is the season going pretty well so far? “Yeah. We unfortunately only have like five girls, but we’re all very woven together. We all make it fun for everyone, even though we have so little girls. In the long run, it’s been a very fun year so far.” You’ve been bowling since you were about 6. What’s generally your average game score? “I want to say around 100, 115.” What do you like to do in your spare time? “I am a major bookworm. I’m consistently reading or I’m either writing myself. If I’m not doing reading or writing, I like to dabble in SFX makeup. And I also dabble in art.” Are you a big fiction or nonfiction reader? “I’m a big nonfiction person, but I dabble in a lot of the realistic nonfiction books.” Who is your favorite author? “That’s insanely hard for me, because I read so many books that I don’t look at the author, I just look at the book’s description and I’m like, ‘OK, this can work.’” Since you don’t compete in a spring sport, do you have more free time? “During the spring, I’m actually the boys’ tennis manager, so I help our coaches with drills and getting the boys ready for matches and stuff. During summer, I’m working pretty much every single week, four days, maybe.” What do you do for a job? “I’m a babysitter for one of my neighbors who have three kids. While both of the parents are at work, I watch them from about 5:15 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon.” Do you like to travel? “Yes, I do like to travel. I want to travel more, but with my schedule, it doesn’t allow me to.” Where is the last vacation spot to went to? “I went to California, around the L.A. area. I went there for my sister — she was in like a dance intensive thing. Me and my mom, we explored the surrounding area around the hotel and then we got to go to Disney and the zoo down there. That was really fun.” What’s the most important thing in your life right now? “The most important thing in my life right now is my family, because throughout everything I do, they’ve always been the biggest supporters I have. Even when I’m down in the dumps, I can always go to my grandparents or my dad or my mom or even my sister just to like bring a smile to my face.” What are some of your other hobbies? “I’m into woodworking. So like making cabinetry, shelves, stuff like that. For school, I’m in a thing called the Bridges program through West High School where we go and build houses, and that’s pretty fun.” If you could be somebody for a day, who would it be? “Myself, because why would I want to be anyone else when I can be myself?” Give me a quote that’s stuck with you through the years? “Happiness can be found in even the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light.” -Albus Dumbledore Do you know what your plans are yet for next year? “I want to go to college for environmental science. I looked at UWGB and I really loved the campus, because there’s so much nature around and it’s just a very beautiful place.” With studying environmental science, do you know what you’d like to do for a career? “I would want to become a forest ranger, because they really help in preserving the wildlife and help protect against wildfires.”me years you don’t have any injuries, and other years you have lots,” Marsh said. “Our fingers are crossed we get those guys back, can win a few more conference games and make a run in the playoffs.”

EDT | News | Register-Herald.com – Beckley Register-Herald https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/ap-business-summarybrief-at-904-a-m-edt-news-register-herald-com-beckley-register-herald/ Denmark says Nord Stream 1 pipelines stop leaking HELSINKI (AP) — Authorities in Denmark say the Nord Stream 1 natural gas pipelines have stopped leaking. The announcement Sunday came a day after officials said that the ruptured Nord Stream 2 pipelines also appeared to stop leaking. The Nord Stream AG company informed the Danish Energy Agency that a stable pressure now appears to have been achieved on the Nord Stream 1 pipelines. The Danish agency said Saturday the Nord Stream 2 ruptured natural gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea appears to have stopped leaking natural gas. Allies aim for risky Russian oil price cap as winter nears WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials celebrated at the start of September when top allies agreed to back an audacious, never-before-tried plan to clamp down on Vladimir Putin’s access to cash. The countries would pay only cut-rate prices for Russian oil. That would deprive Putin of money to keep prosecuting his war in Ukraine, but also ensure that oil kept gushing out of Russia and kept global prices low. But nearly a month later, the organization made up of some of the world’s leading economies, the Group of Seven, is still figuring out how to execute their plan and gather participants. Biden pledge to make federal fleet electric faces slow start WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden often promises to lead by example by moving quickly to convert the U.S. government fleet to zero-emission electric vehicles. But efforts have lagged in helping meet his ambitious climate goals by eliminating gas-powered vehicles from the federal fleet. Biden last year directed the government to purchase only American-made zero-emission passenger cars by 2027. But the General Services Administration, which buys two-thirds of the federal fleet, says there are no guarantees. It cites big upfront costs and specialized agency needs, such as off-road vehicles for national parks that have limited EV options. About 13% of new light-duty vehicles purchased across the government this year — meaning about 3,550 — were zero emissions. US shift away from coal hits tribal community in New Mexico KIRTLAND, N.M. (AP) — The lights are out at a coal-fired power plant in northwestern New Mexico that has provided electricity to millions of people across the southwestern U.S. for nearly a half-century. The closure of the San Juan Generating Station follows years of legal battles by environmentalists and mounting regulatory pressures aimed at curbing pollution and climate change. The realities of closing the plant and the adjacent mine are now setting in for surrounding communities, many of which are home to Native Americans. Hundreds of good-paying jobs are evaporating along with tens of millions of dollars in annual tax revenue that’s used to fund local schools. Rebel violence in eastern Congo causes hunger to soar NYIRAGONGO, Congo (AP) — Humanitarian workers say hunger is now soaring in eastern Congo after months of fighting between M23 rebels and the army. An internal draft assessment by aid groups seen by The Associated Press says nearly 260,000 people are facing extreme food insecurity in Nyiragongo and Rutshuru territories. But only 10% of those targeted by aid groups this year received the full recommended food assistance. That’s because of a lack of funds and security concerns that has restricted access to some areas. Health staff at one hospital said that the number of severely malnourished children had nearly tripled between April to July. Ukraine presses counteroffensive after Russian setback KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia has attacked the Ukrainian president’s hometown with suicide drones and Ukraine pushed ahead with its counteroffensive that has embarrassed the Kremlin. Ukraine took back control of a strategic eastern city, Lyman, which it had been using as a transport and logistics hub. That’s a new blow to the Kremlin as it seeks to escalate the war by illegally annexing four regions of Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said more Ukrainian flags are flying in what was recently Russian-occupied territory. His hometown was among targets of suicide drones in the latest fighting Sunday. UK’s Truss sticks by economic plan as her party worries LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Liz Truss has acknowledged she could have done a better job “laying the ground” for her package of unfunded tax cuts. But she insisted Sunday that she would push on with an economic plan that has caused turmoil on financial markets and weakened the country’s public finances. Truss acknowledged that the U.K. faces “a very turbulent and stormy time” but said her policies would lead to a “high-growth, low-tax economy” in the longer term. The comments are unlikely to calm Truss’s Conservative Party. The party opens its four-day annual conference on Sunday amid plunging poll ratings and growing public discontent. Germany, Denmark, Norway to deliver 16 howitzers to Ukraine BERLIN (AP) — German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht has announced the delivery of 16 wheeled armored howitzers produced in Slovakia to Ukraine next year. The Zuzana systems would be produced in Slovakia and financed jointly with Denmark, Norway and Germany, the German minister told public broadcaster ARD on Sunday after returning from her first trip to Ukraine since the start of the war there. The Zuzana howitzer is the flagship product of the Slovak defense industry and the only heavy weapon system produced in the country, dpa reported. The German ministry put the total value of the procurement at 92 million euros ($90 million), with the three countries financing it equally. Brazil holds historic election with Lula against Bolsonaro RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazilians are voting in a highly polarized election that could determine if the country returns a leftist to the helm of the world’s fourth-largest democracy or keeps the far-right incumbent in office for another four years. The race pits far-right President Jair Bolsonaro against his political nemesis, leftist former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Recent polls have given da Silva a commanding lead, pointing to a chance that he might win the first round outright, without need for a runoff. Da Silva would have to get more than 50% of the votes cast Sunday, topping the total vote for Bolsonaro and the other nine candidates. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. 79 King Street Project To Be Developed In Massachusetts – Construction Review https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/79-king-street-project-to-be-developed-in-massachusetts-construction-review/ Live Give Play (LGP) and Spiritos Properties are partnering to build a 79 King Street housing project in Northampton Massachusetts. This development is intended to be a 70-Unit rental building for adults aged 54 years and above. Basically, the developers have come up with a concept that supports baby boomers trying to shrink in size. While still allowing them to maintain their lifestyle, without needing to move to a traditional senior living community.  79 King Street is designed to support healthy lifestyles (Live), community service (Give), and cultural engagement (Play)  in environmentally progressive buildings. Therefore, its location is ideally positioned in the heart of downtown Northampton. The LGP property is in close proximity to Smith College on a walk/bike path and the Amtrak station. Consequently, the location offers residents connections to Northampton’s food, shopping, and cultural centers. Search for construction leads Also Read $110 M Anthem House project to be developed in Alabama Development plans for the 79 King Street project Development plans for the 79 King Street project will cover construction on a five-story structure, spanning across 110,000-square-feet. This 70-unit building will feature a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom layouts, with prices starting at $2,000 monthly. Thus far, the developers have continued raising equity ahead of securing a construction loan for the project. However, the groundbreaking is expected to commence by spring of 2023, with an opening date slated for late 2024. BKSK Architects, the designers of the 79 King Street project have incorporated building plans focused on sustainability. Therefore, the building was designed as a mass-timber structure, with Passive House standards. Additionally, the building features roof-mounted solar panels and also provides electric vehicles on-site for residents to rent and use. According to the developers, the idea of having electric vehicles on-site would discourage residents from owning vehicles. Their goal is to get residents to scale down from two cars to one or eventually give up on using cars. Thereby, encouraging residents to access the nearby walking trails and shopping on foot. Live Give Play’s CEO, David Fox said the company’s vision is to bring more Brooklyn-life feel projects to smaller cities. He said their goal was to build other apartment communities like 79 King Street throughout the country. In Fox’s opinion,  people can also live happily in an urban in-fill apartment with a walkable neighborhood.

Manchester City Vs. Manchester United Live Score, Updates, Highlights And Lineups As Rashford Returns And Rodri Misses Out – Sporting News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/manchester-city-vs-manchester-united-live-score-updates-highlights-and-lineups-as-rashford-returns-and-rodri-misses-out-sporting-news/ Erling Haaland will get his first taste of the Manchester derby when City and United meet for the 188th time in history on Sunday. The Etihad Stadium clash is also Erik ten Hag’s maiden crosstown clash, with the Dutchman having masterminded an impressive recovery of four consecutive Premier League wins after United’s false start to the season. That run includes wins over Liverpool and Arsenal at Old Trafford, meaning the Red Devils will approach City with more confidence than might have been expected back in August. Pep Guardiola is without key midfielder Rodri and has opted for Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake ahead of Ruben Dias at centre-back. Marcus Rashford has overcome a hamstring problem to start for United. The Sporting News is following the match live and providing live score updates and commentary. Man City vs. Man United live updates, highlights from 188th Manchester derby 12th minute: Dalot, who is on thin ice, gets one-twoed by Grealish and conceded a free-kick in a dangerous position. United get the ball clear as much by accident as by design. 11th minute: Fernandes tries to fashion a United response and finds Rashford. His first touch lets him down and Gundogan gets back to hack clear with his first telling piece of defensive work in this deeper role. 8th minute: GOOOAAAALLLLL!!!!! Foden!!!!!! The Manchester man makes the breakthrough on derby day. That passage of play began with Grealish playing a horrible pass across halfway. Akanji had to tidy up by winning a  50-50 on Sancho. There was no such decisive defending from United as Foden darted into the area unaccompanied to emphatically finish Silva’s cross. That’s his 49th City goal and first in the derby. 6th minute: Silva gets down the left again amid suspicions of offside. Grealish tries to fashion a one-two with Haaland but the return pass goes out for a goalkick. 3rd minute: Somehow City don’t lead. Grealish slips a pass beyond the now compromised Dalot. Silva hangs up a cross for Haaland, his header is blocked, De Gea thwarts De Bruyne from the rebound and Silva has his own strike blocked in the goalmouth. 2nd minute: Well, that’s daft. The second foul of the game sees Diogo Dalot get himself a very early yellow card for blundering into Jack Grealish on the left. 1st minute: A first touch for Haaland, if anyone’s playing that game. The City striker drags Varane back into his own half and wins a freekick.  1 min from kickoff: Blue Moon now being belted out, final formalities being attended to. Both teams are wearing black armbands following the football stadium tragedy earlier today in Indonesia. 5 mins from kickoff: The teams are in the tunnel and noise is rumbling around the Etihad Stadium. It’s almost time. 15 mins from kickoff: Our man Joe Wright is at the ground today. He’s complaining about the bright clothes the young people are wearing. Players locked in a very public battle of the most garish warm-up outfits. Think United are edging it pic.twitter.com/HVe7vrKbfi — Joe Wright (@JoeWright004) October 2, 2022 20 mins from kickoff: Dias joined City two years ago this week. He has been a transformative signing and Guardiola’s decision to bench him will get plenty of post-match focus if United are triumphant. But the Portugal international is not playing at the imperious level that saw him quickly become City’s defensive leader, while Akanji and Ake have both been in fine form. Additionally, a lot of pace against this United forward line when there is Rodri for screening cover makes sense. Even so, file Guardiola’s picks for his starting centre-backs under “big call”. 40 mins from kickoff: It’s certainly an early plus for Ten Hag that all the pre-game talk centres on the City XI. He has the luxury of being able to field a winning team once again with the minimum of fuss. Among other things, that shows he has quickly won the argument over Ronaldo’s reduced role. Still, it would be a brave person who bets against CR7 coming off the bench to make an impact if this one remains in the balance with 20 minutes to go. 1 hour from kickoff: That’s confirmed then, no Rodri for City. Perhaps more intriguingly, Ruben Dias is only on the bench alongside the returning Aymeric Laporte, with Nathan Ake partnering Manuel Akanji at centre-back. Your City line-up for the derby! Jack Grealish has been spotted doing some pre-match media duties, so he’s starting for the hosts. One reason for that might be the seeming absence of Rodri from the City squad that got off the team coach a few moments ago. If the Spain international is out, expect Ilkay Gundogan to slot into his role at the base of midfield, with Grealish and Phil Foden flanking Haaland in attack. 1 hr 30 mins from kickoff: It’s tricky to know quite what to expect from United today, largely because they haven’t played a Premier League game for almost a month. They turned their form around very impressively following a dismal start to life under Erik ten Hag, winning four in succession. That run includes home wins over Liverpool and Arsenal but  1 hr 40 mins from kickoff: Here we go then. The big one in Manchester. City’s title defence has started without them completely hitting top gear but avoiding the sort of turbulence that has beset expected challengers Liverpool and Chelsea. Then there is Erling Haaland plundering goals all over the place and relishing his first taste of this fixture. 2 hours from kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Manchester City vs. Manchester United. Man City projected lineup (4-3-3): Ederson (GK) — Walker, Akanji, Dias, Cancelo — De Bruyne, Rodri, Silva — Foden, Haaland, Grealish. Marcus Rashford netted twice in the Arsenal win before being withdrawn due to a hamstring injury. However, the England forward is back in training and available to start, meaning only a place on the bench for Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo is joined among the substitutes by Facundo Pellistri, who makes a Premier League squad for the first time. Harry Maguire (knee) is out. Hacking Your Room For Sleep INQUIRER.net
Hacking Your Room For Sleep INQUIRER.net
Hacking Your Room For Sleep – INQUIRER.net https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/hacking-your-room-for-sleep-inquirer-net/ Pillow firmness according to sleep position —casper.com At no other point in recent history have we been so preoccupied with our sleep. For many years, what mattered most was the magical eight-hour duration, the basic prescription for rest and restoration. But today, the science of sleep has become more elaborate given our complex and hurried lives. The focus has become to sleep better, not just longer, with the quality, depth and continuity of sleep all ranking in the criteria of a good night’s regeneration as the cradle of our well-being. Sleep trackers like smart watches and Fitbits act like watchmen for our snooze hours, but while they track, they do not enhance. Sleeping well is largely left to the habits and surroundings of an individual. As I firmly believe in changing the things that you can for a better quality of life, I’d recommend rearranging, modifying and tweaking your bedroom to be on top of your list. Cooler temperatures Keep your room cool at 15.6 to 19.4 degrees Celsius. This is the prescribed sleep temperature for adults. Studies show that cooler temperatures promote the production of melatonin, help you drop into sleep faster, and help the body achieve restorative deep sleep. A ceiling fan is usually quieter than other fans, has a wider coverage and better air distribution. Here, growth hormones are released, muscles and tissues are repaired, and our bodies clear out wastes and toxins. If nightly airconditioning hurts your pocket, consider the use of a ceiling fan which not only provides better airflow, but is usually quieter than other fan types. Keep your bed height closer to the floor, where cooler air settles. Comfortable mattress, beddings Make sure to have a comfortable mattress and beddings. A good mattress should cradle your back and neck to reduce any neck, shoulder, upper back and lower back stresses. There are no rules for hardness of softness, the choice will depend on your body and sleep position. Soft material and cool pastel shades of blue simulate a cooling and relaxing environment for sleep.—Will Taylor (bright.bazaa) and Whitesands (mydomaine.com) For pillows, harder pillows will support your neck better when sleeping on your side. On your back, softer pillows will keep from straining your neck. If your space can accommodate it, use a king-size mattress to allow for more movement. Bear in mind, too, that memory foam mattresses are usually warmer while the traditional spring-based ones provide better airflow intense, or cooler. Choose wisely. Regulate your bedroom lights Your bedroom’s artificial lights should be kept to a warm temperature and located at a level below your standing eye-level. Avoid using ceiling lights. If you must, keep them dim and yellow. Studies show that the kind of light you are exposed to throughout the day affects the cycle of your sleep, hence, stay away from blue spectrum lights found largely in daylighting and electronic devices in the early evenings. And during sleep time, white lights are sure to sabotage your slumber so keep the use of electronic gadgets minimal and stow them away after use. Invest in acoustics Reducing the amount of noise transmitted into your sleeping spaces can greatly enhance sleep quality. While you may not want to completely block off the noise for security reasons, installing trims around door openings, door bottom gaps, installing acoustical curtains, or even adding a second layer of windows if you live in an excessively noisy neighborhood, can all prolong or greatly enhance the quality of sleep Wrap your room or accentuate in cool colors Studies have shown that bedrooms in cool pastel shades—especially light blues, greens and yellows—are conducive to sleep. They visually cool you down and are very calming to the eyes. Avoid strong and bold shades of blue, and do not use warm colors especially the stronger shades of red and orange which are both visually jarring and connote activity and restlessness. Minimize visual clutter Out of sight, out of mind! Clutter stimulates the brain away from a restful state. If you have a worktable in your bedroom, locate it outside of your visual field when viewed from sitting or lying position on your bed. Keep your books and other items inside your night tables, including your electronic gadgets. If you have accessories, artwork, shelving, and other décor, make sure they are properly arranged and are free of anything that can annoy you visually, or trigger you emotionally. Shield your eyes from morning light Our optic nerves are very sensitive and a small stream of light can wake us at the crack of dawn. While eye masks or covers are practical, they can sometimes be uncomfortable and inconvenient. Make sure to have a layer of black out curtains or shades, paying attention to their edges where small gaps will allow light to creep in. Ensure that there are sufficient overlaps, or channels to enclose the edges and seal off the light. Window treatments should be able to seal off light, enabling one to sleep longer hours.—roomdesign.com Establish a rhythm for sleep Science shows that the time you wake up is more important than the time you sleep. To regulate your length and quality of sleep, head to bed and make sure you set your alarm to ring at the same time every morning. Worried about not getting enough? With a regular wake time, your body will adjust, and your sleep will become more efficient. Our waking-hour activities should be dictated by our sleep cycles, and not the other way around. Productive and enjoyable days can only happen when they are supported by a good night’s sleep that may or may not be eight hours long, but has quality, depth and continuity made possible by a well-crafted environment. Notwithstanding, according to DeFi Riddler, the airdrop is likely to be worth around $50,000 due to Optimism’s (OP) airdrop total worth of $50,000.  Additionally, the community should expect Arbitrum to launch its token soon, before the airdrop kicks off. As the distribution period for the airdrop appears to be around the corner, DeFi Riddler listed some likely eligibility criteria in a four-point analysis. The first point involves the Arbitrum Odyssey Campaign. Proponents who took part in the Odyssey Campaign and haven’t claimed their NFTs yet are advised to connect their MetaMask wallet on Arbitrum to claim the token. A link in this regard was provided. Claimable period lies between June 28, 18:00 and October 30, 17:59 (GMT+1). Notwithstanding, participants who did not get the NFT should head to Stratos NFT – an NFT marketplace on Arbitrum – to purchase a token. This will give them a role on Arbitrum Discord channel. After purchasing or claiming the NFT, proponents should bridge some of their ETH tokens from the Ethereum mainnet to the Arbitrum One Network. After a successful bridge, proponents are advised to interact with dApps on the Arbitrum network by using them for several transactions on multiple days. Transactions mustn’t involve large funds. Arbitrum is one of the most successful Ethereum L2 solutions Thirdly, proponents should prioritize completing Arbitrum tasks on Discord. They would need a wallet and a Discord account for this. Funds ranging from $5 to $10 worth of ETH is enough to engage in the tasks. Users who complete the tasks receive rewards and increase their chances of receiving the upcoming airdrop.  Conclusively, active participation on the Ethereum network is likely to increase one’s chances of getting the airdrop. In this regard, proponents are advised to hold some ETH tokens, regardless of the amount, and get involved in on-chain activities. Users can also vote on available proposals on the project’s snapshot. Airdrops are free tokens distributed by a project to numerous early adopters’ wallet addresses as a way of promoting the project. Airdropped tokens are likely to be minute in amount due to the multiple users they will be reaching. Notwithstanding, a price surge on these tokens could significantly increase their worth overtime. Arbitrum is likely to begin its airdrop soon, and the scaling solution’s prominence is indicative of the airdrop’s significance. Arbitrum is essentially a layer-2 solution on the Ethereum blockchain.  The platform seeks to increase Ethereum’s transaction speed and cut down its fees by using optimistic rollups. Arbitrum is one of the most successful Ethereum L2 scaling solutions with over $1B in its total value locked (TVL).

JD.com Founder And Billionaire Liu Settles U.S. Rape Civil Suit – Reuters https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/jd-com-founder-and-billionaire-liu-settles-u-s-rape-civil-suit-reuters/ SHANGHAI, Oct 2 (Reuters) – Billionaire Richard Liu, founder of one of China’s largest e-commerce platforms JD.com, has settled a civil suit brought by former University of Michigan student Liu Jingyao, who had accused him of rape. The suit was part of a long-running legal battle between Richard Liu and Liu Jingyao, who was a 21-year-old student in 2018 when she said Richard Liu raped her after an evening of dinner and drinks. A statement from the lawsuit’s parties, and provided to Reuters by JD.com, said: “The incident between Ms. Jingyao Liu and Mr. Richard Liu in Minnesota in 2018 resulted in a misunderstanding that has consumed substantial public attention and brought profound suffering to the parties and their families.” Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com It went on to confirm that the case, which last week began jury selection proceedings in a Minnesota court, has been settled, but did not disclose the conditions of the settlement. JD.com declined to comment further on the case, while lawyers for Richard Liu and Liu Jingyao did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Richard Liu is a high-profile billionaire in China who founded and until earlier this year was chief executive of JD.com. He handed the CEO reins to Xu Lei in April. Liu Jingyao filed the civil suit in April 2019, four months after prosecutors declined to press criminal charges against Richard Liu. The case heavily dented Liu’s reputation in China and put scrutiny on his control of the e-commerce giant. In 2019, he resigned from the advisory body to China’s parliament, citing “personal reasons”. The case had also galvanised many women in China, where issues such as sexual harassment and assault had for years been rarely broached in public until the #MeToo movement took root in 2018, though it has faced online censorship and official pushback since. Supporters of Liu Jingyao on Chinese social media called the settlement a win for China’s #MeToo movement. News of the settlement quickly began trending on Chinese social media on Sunday, with more than 110 million people reading news on the topic. In February 2022, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus received the same classification as antique, and now the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will follow suit, reports AppleInsider. When the iPhone 6s was launched, the tech giant continued to sell the iPhone 6 as its lower-cost offering. It finally stopped sales once the iPhone 7 was released in 2016. The larger “Plus” model of the iPhone was initially made available with the release of the iPhone 6 series. It also had a new design with curved edges that replaced the iPhone 4 through iPhone 5s’s previous design with flat edges. Along with the iPhone 6, Apple also introduced Apple Pay, a safe way for customers to make purchases online by saving their credit and debit cards in the Wallet app. The tech giant considered one of its products as vintage when it stopped distributing them for sale more than five years and less than seven years ago. It provides service and parts for vintage products for up to seven years or as required by law. Latest Technology News

Despite Political Drama Nirenberg Defends Migrant Resource Center San Antonio Report
Despite Political Drama, Nirenberg Defends Migrant Resource Center – San Antonio Report https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/despite-political-drama-nirenberg-defends-migrant-resource-center-san-antonio-report/ The City of San Antonio’s best efforts to help the growing number of migrants seeking asylum from places like Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua faced obstacles from the start. First, federal agents working at the border flooded the city with more migrants than it could handle, forcing Mayor Ron Nirenberg to write the Department of Homeland Security seeking help. Next, the city’s decision to open a resource center in July to prevent migrants from crowding the city’s transit hubs faced backlash from residents who say they were blindsided by its unexpected opening in a residential community. The issue reached a breaking point last month, when some migrants were told they could no longer stay at the packed San Pedro Avenue resource center after three days. Desperate for work and shelter, 43 people were lured onto a flight to Martha’s Vineyard that was orchestrated by Florida governor and likely Republican presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis — part of an attention-grabbing political statement against federal immigration policies. The outcome, while predictable, came as a disappointment to Nirenberg after all the city’s attempts to welcome asylum-seekers and ease their journeys. “Unfortunately, because of the tenor of the political discussion in recent years, it is not surprising … that a politician would seek to make a political point and do so by exploiting migrants,” Nirenberg told the San Antonio Report in a wide-ranging interview at City Hall this week. “It does illustrate the depths of moral depravity on the part of some of these politicians who are doing this.” On Sept. 19 — five days after the flight to Martha’s Vineyard — the city began transitioning management of its migrant resource center to Catholic Charities, according to documents obtained via an open records request by the San Antonio Report. Nirenberg says the handover had always been part of the city’s plan, though it wasn’t mentioned when City Council members voted to request Federal Emergency Management Agency funding to pay for the center back in June. Despite the initial challenges and political firestorm of recent weeks, Nirenberg is standing by the city’s unilateral approach to creating the center, which is now being used as a model in other cities like El Paso. “Our job,” Nirenberg said, “regardless of what’s happening or not happening at the federal level, is to treat people with compassion.” The mayor and other city staff members recently advised U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on what they’ve learned from running the resource center in the nearly three months since it opened. If the choice is between what existed before — migrants sleeping in the terminal at San Antonio Airport and being dropped off outside the Greyhound station downtown at all hours of day or night — or the city stepping in and facilitating the migrants’ journeys with the help of nonprofits and the faith community, Nirenberg said he would do it again. Credit: Nick Wagner / San Antonio Report “If those are the two choices, I’m going to go with the compassionate choice that’s organized and minimizes disruption,” he said. The mayor is also making a long-term commitment to help the latest influx of migrants, regardless of federal action on comprehensive immigration reform — even as the city distances itself from the national political controversy. Though the city’s agreement to rent the building on San Pedro Avenue only runs through the end of the year, Nirenberg signaled in Wednesday’s interview that the center would still be needed beyond that deadline. “I don’t see congressional action taking place anytime soon, unfortunately,” Nirenberg said. “And until that happens, as we see migrant flows come through our communities, we’re going to need an MRC.” Day-to-day operation of the resource center is now handled by Catholic Charities. The daily staffing needs vary, but the social services organization has budgeted for 146 staffers daily at the site, chief development officer Tara Ford said Friday. The group hasn’t yet had any conversations with government officials about plans to keep it running past December, according to Ford. Seeking help In May, as the number of migrants arriving in San Antonio was reaching new heights, Nirenberg wrote a high-profile letter to Mayorkas seeking help dealing with the “unsustainable” increase and requesting that migrants be sent to other cities in Texas, including Houston and Austin, to share the burden. “We know how to do this work. We’ve been through this before under multiple administrations,” Nirenberg said in Wednesday’s interview about his mindset at the time. “What we really needed at that time was better coordination with the officers and the departments that are immediately on the border.” A man carries two children as he walks toward a military checkpoint to seek asylum on the banks of the Rio Grande in Eagle Pass on Aug. 9. Many at the migrant resource center say they crossed from Piedras Negras, Mexico, into Eagle Pass. Credit: Nick Wagner / San Antonio Report Since then, Nirenberg said the city received assurances that it would be reimbursed for the cost of opening and running a resource center. The city has not requested any additional funds since the City Council voted to pursue $10.8 million from FEMA back in June, Nirenberg said this week. The Mayorkas letter opened communication with DHS about the number of migrants arriving and the city’s capacity to help, the mayor said. For example, shortly after the resource center opened, staff requested that U.S. Customs and Border Protection stop sending buses for several days because the center had already exceeded capacity. “We are right up at the edge of capacity on a frequent basis,” Nirenberg said of the migrant resource center. Since the letter to DHS, Nirenberg said communication between the city and federal agencies has improved significantly. “We’ve hit challenges, we’ve communicated that and they’ve addressed them,” he said. Still, some migrants told the San Antonio Report last month that they were being asked to leave the center after three days when it was at capacity. Migrants began sleeping on the streets and searching for work to support themselves, though they aren’t legally permitted to do so while they await asylum hearings. San Antonio Department of Human Services officials said that when migrants leave the MRC, they’re given resources, including Catholic Charities’ contact information, in hopes that they won’t be without shelter. Asked whether the center’s three-day-stay policy was at all to blame for the migrants being lured to Martha’s Vineyard, Nirenberg said he “couldn’t speak to unofficial policies” and directed the question to Catholic Charities staff now at the center. Nirenberg stressed that while San Antonio wants to help migrants seeking a better life, “they’re here legally, which means they’re not in custody of anyone, not the federal government, local government or anybody else.” Martha’s Vineyard In mid-September, a 27-year-old Venezuelan migrant told the San Antonio Report he was paid $200 in cash to recruit people from outside San Antonio’s migrant resource center to board a flight that later landed at Martha’s Vineyard. Some later said they overlooked red flags about the situation in hopes that taking the flight would lead to better work opportunities. Nirenberg and other city officials offered little comment in the immediate aftermath of the incident, which occurred shortly after reports of migrants being asked to leave the resource center. “We were gathering facts and trying to be helpful,” said Nirenberg, who added that he spoke directly to Mayorkas after he was made aware of the situation. “We want to ensure that justice is done all the way around and that, if people are perpetrating the exploitation of migrants in our backyard, that they’re brought swift justice.” A bus departs the city’s migrant resource center while migrants gather on a sidewalk on Sept. 16. Credit: Nick Wagner / San Antonio Report The city is now making migrants aware of potential threats in San Antonio, Nirenberg said. Signs have been posted around the center providing the number for the National Human Trafficking hotline. After the Martha’s Vineyard flight, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar opened an investigation into whether the people who lured the migrants did so “under false pretenses.” On Thursday, a San Antonio Report reporter was questioned by investigators from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office after talking with migrants near the Advanced Auto Parts store across from the migrant resource center. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office did not confirm whether investigators are monitoring the area, but on Thursday said they’re working to obtain statements from the migrants who were flown from San Antonio to Martha’s Vineyard. Handing off the center “Many things are changing,” in the resource center’s transition to Catholic Charities, Ford said — including the fact that now hot meals and clothing are being provided to migrants who come through the center. “The center will provide a humanitarian approach to all people,” Ford said. Under the new arrangement, Catholic Charities’ staff members at the center will oversee case management, sheltering, reception and intake, food and commodities distribution, as well as travel assistance necessary to get migrants to their final destination and hearing date, according to the city. Catholic Charities has “a contract with the government to support operations at the center,” Ford said, but she didn’t confirm if the FEMA funds will be r...

Here Are 10 Ideas For The Adventurous Bucket-List Traveler TheTravel
Here Are 10 Ideas For The Adventurous Bucket-List Traveler TheTravel
Here Are 10 Ideas For The Adventurous Bucket-List Traveler – TheTravel https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/here-are-10-ideas-for-the-adventurous-bucket-list-traveler-thetravel/ There are all different types of travelers out there, from broke backpackers to luxurious honeymooners to the one that only joins organized, curated tour groups. Then… there are the serious adventure bucket-list tickers, constantly trying to outdo themselves and everyone around them by going on the most epic of adventures. If you fall into the latter category, this list is for you, with 10 ideas to spark some inspiration for your bucket list. 10 Visit All 7 Continents If you’re a bucket list traveler, it’s likely this is already on your list, but in case it’s not, here’s your reminder that it should be! All seven continents include North America, Oceania, South America, Africa, Asia, Europe, and the least visited one of Antarctica. Start planning out when you can go to each one, and if your budget is tight, visit them in the low season. Pro-tip: the Northern Hemisphere’s winter is the Southern Hemisphere’s summer, and vice-versa, meaning spots such as Brazil and Ecuador are bound to be packed in January and February but likely less busy in months such as May and June. Another pro-tip: Antarctica can only be visited from November-March. 9 Visit 7 New Wonders Of The World The 7 New Wonders of the World include the Taj Mahal in Agra, India; the Colosseum in Rome, Italy; The Great Wall of China in Beijing, China; Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Petra in Petra, Jordan; Chichen Itza in Yucatan, Mexico; and Machu Picchu in Cusco, Peru. Not many people can say they’ve visited all seven new wonders of the world, and before the list changes (which it frequently does), jump on the bandwagon and start planning how to see all of them. 8 Climb Mount Kilimanjaro If you want serious bragging rights, nothing will top casually bringing up that you hiked Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa’s highest peak. You’d be surprised to know you don’t need a ton of physical training to successfully hike Kilimanjaro; you likely need some form of anti-altitude sickness pill, as well as serious mental stamina. Note that it is required to hire a guide for Kilimanjaro, and it will likely cost in the $1500-$2000 range just for the guide, and you are expected to tip on top of it. That price might sound steep, but hiking Kilimanjaro takes an average of 6-8 days, and that price includes all of your meals, your sleeping tent, and equipment, as well as porters carrying all of your stuff. Go for an adrenaline-infused hike with the best of the best. 7 Get Scuba Certified In The Great Barrier Reef There’s no better way to really get away from it all than by scuba diving underwater and joining the magical world of the sea. If you are looking to get certified in one of the best places in the world for diving, The Great Barrier Reef should be on your bucket list. You’ll have to spend four days learning diving and safety techniques, with the first two days being in a classroom with an outdoor pool and the last two days being in the ocean itself. Be prepared to swim alongside turtles, and clownfish, and see exciting sights such as large clams and reef sharks taking a nap (they sleep during the day). After four days, as long as you follow protocol and successfully complete all of your tasks, you’ll officially be PADI-scuba certified at one of the most epic places to do so. 6 Visit The 7 Wonders Of Nature The new seven wonders of the world is not the only list that deserves attention. Have you heard of the seven wonders of nature? The list includes Komodo Island in Indonesia, Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, Jeju Island in Korea, The Amazon in South America (spanning several countries), the Puerto Princesa Underground River in The Philippines, Iguazu Falls in Argentina and Brazil, and Table Mountain in South Africa. Some of these locations overlap with the 7 new wonders of the world, so you might as well kill two birds with one stone and see them! 5 Visit Every Country In The World Did you know more people have been to space than those who have visited every country in the world? Though people in the past have accomplished this very difficult and tricky feat, recent additions to the “every-country” list are Lexie Alford, Drew Binsky, Cassie de Pecol, Jessica Nabongo, and Alvaro Rojas, to name a few. Visiting every country includes hassles like finding funding, obtaining hard-to-get visas, and traveling to places with serious political conflict, but if you’re a hungry traveler looking for the ultimate adventure, this is probably the one. 4 Visit “Forbidden” Places Are you less interested in popular vacation spots such as Paris and the Bahamas and keener on the road less traveled? There are some places that receive very little tourism, either due to instability or just not having the infrastructure to market themselves as touristic destinations. If you’re looking for a truly forbidden getaway, head to somewhere like Socotra Island in Yemen, Iraqi Kurdistan, or even North Korea, though keep in mind Americans can no longer visit North Korea due to the death of Otto Warmbier in 2017. 3 Visit 2 (Or More) Countries In One Day There are a few unique places in the world where it’s possible to multi-country hop in a singular day. Head to northern Thailand, and hop over to Laos and Myanmar in the span of a day (though prepare a lot of time for border crossings). Take a stroll from southern Brazil into Paraguay. Better yet, visit Iguazu Falls (pictured above), where one side is in Argentina, and one side is in Brazil. Italy has two landlocked nations within its borders, The Vatican and San Marino. Take an Eastern European road trip, and you can easily hit Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, and possibly Montenegro and/or Bosnia and Herzegovina all in a day. 2 Take a Foreign Road-Trip via Kaitlyn Rosati What’s better than having the ultimate freedom to choose where to go when on a trip abroad? Be in the driver’s seat of your own adventure, literally, and rent a car abroad. A foreign road trip, especially in a place like New Zealand or Iceland, where driving is somewhat of a necessity, is an adventure that is not to be missed. If you really want to go for it, rent a camper van and sleep in your car as well. 1 Break A Travel Guinness World Record This is a tough one with a lot of logistics involved, but can you think of anything more epic than being a Guinness World Record holder? Current records include visiting the most countries in a singular day with 19 countries visited in 23 hours and 33 minutes, being the youngest person to visit every country in the world at age 21, visiting the most UNESCO World Heritage Sites in a day (visiting 23), and plenty more. Take a look at Guinness World Records, and try to break one that already exists, or create your own!

Ukraine Presses Counteroffensive After Russian Setback | Business News | Wfmz.com – 69News WFMZ-TV https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/ukraine-presses-counteroffensive-after-russian-setback-business-news-wfmz-com-69news-wfmz-tv/ KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia attacked the Ukrainian president’s hometown and other targets with suicide drones on Sunday, and Ukraine took back full control of a strategic eastern city in a counteroffensive that has reshaped the war. Russia’s loss of Lyman, which it had been using as a transport and logistics hub, is a new blow to the Kremlin as it seeks to escalate the war by illegally annexing four regions of Ukraine and heightening its threats to use nuclear force. Ukraine’s recent gains have embarrassed Russian President Vladimir Putin and prompted rare domestic criticism. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday his forces now control Lyman, after Russia’s military announced Saturday its retreat. “As of 12:30 p.m. (0930 GMT) Lyman is cleared fully. Thank you to our militaries, our warriors,” Zelenskyy said in a video address. In southern Ukraine, Zelenskyy’s hometown Krivyi Rih came under Russian attack by a suicide drone that struck a school early Sunday and destroyed two stories of it, said Valentyn Reznichenko, the governor of Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region. Russia in recent weeks has begun using Iranian-made suicide drones to attack targets in Ukraine. In southern Ukraine, the Ukrainian air force said Sunday it shot down five Iranian-made drones overnight, while two others made it through air defenses. Meanwhile, Russian attacks also targeted the city of Zaporizhzhia, Ukrainian authorities said Sunday. And Ukraine’s military said Sunday it carried out strikes on multiple Russian command posts, ammunition depots and two S-300 anti-aircraft batteries. The reports of military activity couldn’t be immediately verified. Ukrainian forces have retaken swaths of territory, notably in the northeast around Kharkiv, in a counteroffensive in recent weeks. In the latest major development, Ukrainian forces encircled Russian troops holding the hub of Lyman in the east, forcing the Russians to withdraw in what the British military described as a “significant political setback” for Moscow. Taking the city paves the way for Ukrainian troops to potentially push farther into territory Russia has occupied. Lyman had been an important link in the Russian front line for ground communications and logistics. Lyman is in the Donetsk region near the border with Luhansk, two of the four regions that Russia illegally annexed Friday after forcing the population to vote in referendums at gunpoint. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed to have inflicted damage on Ukrainian forces in battling to hold Lyman, but said outnumbered Russian troops were withdrawn to more favorable positions. In his nightly address Saturday, Zelenskyy said: “Over the past week, there have been more Ukrainian flags in the Donbas. In a week there will be even more.” In a daily intelligence briefing, the British Defense Ministry called Lyman crucial because it has “a key road crossing over the Siversky Donets River, behind which Russia has been attempting to consolidate its defenses.” The British said they believed that the city had been held by “undermanned elements” prior to the Russian withdrawal, which prompted immediate criticism from some Russian officials. “Further losses of territory in illegally occupied territories will almost certainly lead to an intensification of this public criticism and increase the pressure on senior commanders,” the British military briefing said. The Russian retreat from northeast Ukraine in recent weeks has revealed evidence of widespread, routine torture of both civilians and soldiers, notably in the strategic city of Izium, an Associated Press investigation has found. AP journalists located 10 torture sites in the Ukrainian town, including a deep sunless pit in a residential compound, a clammy underground jail that reeked of urine, a medical clinic and a kindergarten. Russian officials release limited information about military activity in what the Kremlin still refuses to call a war. Putin frames the Ukrainian gains as a U.S.-orchestrated effort to destroy Russia, and last week he heightened threats of nuclear force in some of his toughest, most anti-Western rhetoric to date. Pope Francis on Sunday decried the nuclear threats, and appealed to Putin to stop “this spiral of violence and death.” Meanwhile, international concerns are mounting about the fate of Europe’s largest nuclear plant after Russian forces detained its director. The International Atomic Energy Agency announced Sunday that its director-general, Rafael Grossi would visit Kyiv and Moscow in the coming days to discuss the situation around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Grossi is continuing to push for “a nuclear safety and security zone” around the site. The plant is in an area of Ukraine controlled by Russia and within one of the four regions that Moscow illegally annexed on Friday, and repeatedly has been caught in the crossfire of the war. Ukrainian technicians continued running the power station after Russian troops seized it, and its last reactor was shut down in September as a precautionary measure. Hutchinson Regional Medical Center’s President Speaks Of Healthy Aging – The Hutchinson News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/hutchinson-regional-medical-centers-president-speaks-of-healthy-aging-the-hutchinson-news/ Ken Johnson  |  Special to the Hutchinson News September is healthy aging month, an annual observance that is reaffirmation that, regardless of age, no one is getting younger and we are, (hopefully), as the old expression goes, “aging gracefully.” In a recent interview, a 105-year old farmer in Minnesota attributed his longevity to maintaining an active mind and body. For the second year in a row, America’s life expectancy declined to 76.1 years; the lowest since 1996. The two year drop of 2.7 years is the largest decline in 100 years. Factors included in the decline range from COVID-19 to accidental deaths, drug overdoses and an unhealthy lifestyle. On the other hand, 97,000 Americans have achieved the distinction of being centenarians, a term denoting more than 100 years in age, the most of any nation on earth. Men should take note that 85 percent of centenarians are women. As a healthcare professional, I am often asked for an opinion on healthy living. Although some may say genetics is the ultimate factor in our longevity, we can all slow potential medical problems by mere changes in lifestyle. So, if cardiovascular issues are common in your family tree, it should be a warning sign that exercise and healthy eating habits may reduce the chances of that occurring to you. Driving to work early each morning, it is encouraging to observe Hutchinsonians starting their day with a brisk walk. And, in my trips to a local gym, it is apparent that more people are starting their day with a workout. There are days I almost want to say “power to you, and keep it up.” Medical journals are unanimous in stating smart food choices, a good night’s sleep of seven to nine hours, avoidance of tobacco products and no more than a moderate consumption of alcohol are important factors in longevity. Many non-consumption factors that are often overlooked deal with the mind and include everything from adaptability to change, maintaining a sense of humor, determination, optimism, and maintaining social relationships. It is never too late to take control of your health, so let’s all make the commitment to do so today, and by next September we will be reaping the benefits of a healthier and happier life. O-Zone: Slow The Roll Jaguars.com
O-Zone: Slow The Roll Jaguars.com
O-Zone: Slow The Roll – Jaguars.com https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/o-zone-slow-the-roll-jaguars-com/ JACKSONVILLE – Let’s get to it … Gero from Wenden, Germany Hello, John. If I’m not wrong, we played the two games we won with white jerseys. For Sunday against Philadelphia, the white tops were chosen again. A good omen? Also, the players apparently said in the locker room that they want to get a win for Doug Pederson. I’m not big on uniform-based omens, superstitions or witches’ brews. My father used to keep his glasses in a certain place when we watched Washington games, and we both sort of believed the positioning mattered in the outcome. This system worked well in 1991 when the team was one of the best of the modern era and worked less well the next season when a veteran team suddenly became an aging one. My wife has worn a black shirt with a Jaguars logo the past two Fridays and hasn’t watched the Jaguars play Sunday. She firmly believes if she watches Sunday’s game, the Jaguars will lose. This is silly thinking from a woman typically not given to silliness. If Jaguars players believe they play well in white jerseys, I suppose it could help. Until it doesn’t. And yes … Jaguars players want to get a victory Sunday for Head Coach Doug Pederson, who was the head coach in Philadelphia from 2016-2020. Eagles players also want to get a victory. The Pederson-versus-his-old-team thing is a cool storyline. If the Jaguars win, it will be played up. If they lose, it won’t have mattered much. That’s typically how these things go. JR from The Squatchlands What are the odds the ’72 Dolphins will be popping champagne this weekend? Members of the 1972 Dolphins – the only team in NFL history to finish the regular season and postseason unbeaten – famously “pop” champagne each season when the NFL’s last unbeaten team loses. The Eagles are the NFL’s last unbeaten team this season. I’m bad at odds. I think the Eagles will win because they’re good, healthy and playing at home – and because I expect quarterback Jalen Hurts to strain the Jaguars’ defense in a way the unit hasn’t faced yet. I expect the Jaguars’ offense to not quiiiite be as efficient as last week because it’s difficult for a young team to be consistent enough to get into the 30s on the road against good teams in back-to-back weeks. But while I expect the Eagles to win, the Jaguars are playing well enough that I wouldn’t be surprised if they win. So, I suppose I think there’s a decent chance the ’72 Dolphins will pop champagne Sunday, but I sure wouldn’t guarantee it. Bo from Winter Springs, FL Remember all the preseason chatter about how it was the same old Jags? And how people were saying that in training camp that the Jags’ bad offense against the Jags’ bad defense would be us having high expectations and then disappointment again? And many people getting so upset about the “whole” game instead of focusing on the first quarter where we played better than every team we faced until the backups and guys who are no longer on the team played? Those were fun days. Were they? Bill from Hammock, FL Zone, our first three games have been against fairly immobile quarterbacks. This week we are facing a very mobile one. How big of an issue, if any, do you see? This is a big issue. Hurts indeed is the most versatile quarterback the Jaguars will have faced this season. Teams must account for his running ability and none of the Eagles’ first three opponents really have stopped him or the Eagles’ offense this season. I think the Jaguars have the skill set at linebacker with outside linebackers Travon Walker and Josh Allen and inside linebacker Devin Lloyd to play well against Hurts. I believe they can keep Hurts’ mobility from wrecking the game. But in a close game, I do wonder if Hurts can find a way to make one or two plays that could be the difference. That’s how I could see his mobility being an issue Sunday. Kinney from Westside I know you said be nice and I don’t mean it in a disrespectful kind of way but I am so happy we hired Urban Meyer last year. His lack of talent as an NFL head coach is the reason we were able to land not only our draft picks but the coach of the year. No way we get him last year if we didn’t get Urban. Doubt another coach would have wet the bed the way he did and get fired after less than one year. Your first sentence aside, this was kind of disrespectful. And it certainly was not “nice.” Sean G from Saint Johns City If you look at teams playing back-to-back road games over time, I’d expect that record would be fairly low. This one sets up really good for the Eagles. Back-to-back road games are difficult and – as with most things in the NFL – how difficult depends on the quality of your team. Good teams typically fare OK in back-to-back road games and struggling teams, well … struggle. This game sets up well for the Eagles because they’re playing well and they’re at home. The Jaguars have a decent chance for the same reason they beat the Los Angeles Chargers on the road last week – because they’re confident, healthy and playing well. Charles from Port St Lucie, FL These are the things about the national sports media that really irritate Jags fans. Adam Caplan on drive time this week said our punt game and return teams have been inconsistent. That’s a really dumb take that anyone familiar with the Jags wouldn’t make. I was on Drive Time with Caplan this week, and I admit I missed this “take.” I also admit that when assessing heinous crimes against humanity, I would rank this comparatively low. But what irritates you irritates you, I suppose. Charles from Port St Lucie, FL So … we were at six-to-sevens wins before the season. A win this week … where are you at? I’m probably around eight-to-ten now, up from six-to-seven before the season. If the Jaguars beat the Eagles Sunday, I probably would go up to ten-to-11. I would do so reluctantly, because I am at heart an aging pessimist who like to see things before I believe them, but go I probably would. Bradley from Sparks, NV Considering his age and ceiling, there are only three NFL quarterbacks I would trade Trevor Lawrence for without thinking about it (Lamar Jackson of Baltimore, Patrick Mahomes of Kansas City, Josh Allen of Buffalo and only two more I would strongly consider (Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers, Joe Burrow of Cincinnati). Thoughts?? I like Mahomes and Allen much better than Jackson, because I still wonder if Jackson will be as effective if injuries/wear and tear hurt his ability to run. While Mahomes and Allen are mobile, they seem to rely less on the threat of the run to dictate defenses. I would put Herbert and Burrow in the same conversation as the above three players. I might take any of the five over Lawrence because all five have proven themselves over a sustained period whereas Lawrence has begun to show consistency over his last three or four games. But if Lawrence is what we have seen the past two games … Richard from Jacksonville Do you think we will see a trick or “gadget” play if the situation arises? Yes. John from Jacksonville Hi KOAGF – Enjoying the success this season so far but sticking with your concept of waiting until about Game 6 to see more of a better sample set. When do you think we’ll see the return of the long ball (both attempts and an actual completion)? The Jaguars will throw long passes – and complete them – in due time. Lawrence, remember, connected on a 49-yard pass to wide receiver Christian Kirk against Washington in Week 1 – a play-action pass set up by two strong runs by running back James Robinson. Deep shots weren’t really part of the Week 2 game plan against an Indianapolis Colts defense designed to consistently allow underneath throws. The offense was working again with throws to the sideline and intermediate routes in a Week 3. We’re three weeks in. Game plans and opponents often dictate this. There’s no reason to believe it won’t happen. Chris from Mandarin If we beat Philly on the road, I’m going to poop my pants John. Please send help. I didn’t see the part about “if we beat Philly on the road” when first reading this email. I thought it would be less disturbing with that part. It was not. Chris from San Diego, CA For the record, the Jags have won exactly one more game than at the same time in 2020 when the team went 1-15. How about we slow down the playoff/Super Bowl talk? Chris is not “all in.”

Tamadoge price hits $0.083, a 200% going in 24 hours and 700% since presale barely two months ago. Even before a listing on Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, Tamadoge has risen in price by 200% in the past 24 hours; presale buyers have seen even bigger gains of more than 700%. Tamadoge now looks like it has reached escape velocity, as the project name goes viral around the crypto space and buyer demand builds. The team announced on Telegram a couple of days ago that its listing application is now with Binance. Huge TAMA trading volume makes it an attractive listing for Binance At the time of writing,  top crypto data site Coinmarketcap (CMC) records a 24-hour trading volume of $32 million for TAMA, making the latest hot meme coin on the block an extremely attractive listing for Binance. Tamadoge is a game ecosystem built around the tamagotchi idea, but on blockchain, where you bring up your very own Tamadoge Pet and play-to-earn (P2E) in the process. TAMA, the access token to the Tamaverse, has increased in value by 730%, from $0.01 in beta sale to $0.083 at the time of writing. At the current rate of growth Tamadoge could very easily be the next Shiba Inu – a coin that registered gains for investors in excess of 8,000%. More major exchange listings on 5th October: LBank and MEXC It was also announced this week that in addition to already being listed on 4th-ranked exchange OKX according to CoinGecko data, it will be listing on two more centralised exchanges this week Wednesday 5th October – LBank (11:00 UTC) and MEXC Global (13:00 UTC). Binance will no doubt have noticed the price action around TAMA this weekend and its earlier presale in which it raised $19 million in seven weeks – an astounding sum given the ongoing crypto winter. No. 4 price gainer of all tokens listed on CMC and No.1 for tokens with 24-hour volume over $1m On CMC, Tamadoge is currently the 9th most visited project and the No.4 price gainer of all tokens listed on coinmarketcap and No.1 for tokens with a trading volume greater than $1 million. Tamadoge 100 NFT ultra rares coming on 6th October – full collection is 21,100 and will be released soon Probably adding to the build up of FOMO around TAMA was the recent announcement that a collection of 100 ultra rare NFTs is going on sale from 6th October. In order to access the Tamadoge ecosystem, play the games and earn rewards from moving up the leaderboards and battling, you need to buy an NFT. The ultra rare versions will bestow on the owners greater powers for their pet and therefore greater earning potential. The full collection, including the ultra rare NFTs, numbers 21,100 pieces, according to information on the https://tamadoge.io/nfts/ website. Tamadoge promises to be one of the best utility NFT projects of 2022. Tamadoge product development full steam ahead Tamadoge will include a P2E leaderboard and a battling leaderboard, both of which are expected to be released later this year.  The Tamadoge Petstore and Arcade of games of different skill levels is being worked on right now says the team, with partnerships with other metaverse projects expected to be tied up early next year. Also, later next year an augmented reality app will be launched as the Tamaverse furthers its pitch for mass consumer adoption. Where to buy Tamadoge (TAMA) Buy on OKX centralized exchange Buy on OKX decentralized exchnage (if you are geo-restricted) From Wednesday 5th October you will be able to buy TAMA on LBank and MEXC exchanges. Borderlands: US Challenging Mexicos Import Ban Corn FreightWaves
Borderlands: US Challenging Mexicos Import Ban Corn FreightWaves
Borderlands: US Challenging Mexico’s Import Ban Corn – FreightWaves https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/borderlands-us-challenging-mexicos-import-ban-corn-freightwaves/ Borderlands is a weekly rundown of developments in the world of United States-Mexico cross-border trucking and trade. This week: US challenging Mexico’s import ban on corn; Sprint Transport set to build new headquarters in Texas; FleetPride acquires Sam & Sons Truck Equipment; and Laredo border officers seize narcotics worth $11.5M.  US challenging Mexico’s import ban on corn Farmers and policymakers in the United States are urging the Mexican government to reconsider an impending ban on imports of genetically modified corn by 2024. Mexico’s plan to prohibit the importation of the crop began in 2020, when Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador decreed he would eliminate the use of the herbicide glyphosate and genetically modified corn in the country. “If Mexico’s decrees on corn are fully implemented, or even partially implemented by the Dec. 31, 2024 deadline, then that’s really bad for a lot of U.S. exports, and it’s bad for the Mexican population,” Angus R. Kelly, director of public policy, trade and biotechnology at the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA), told FreightWaves. “There’s no doubt prices will increase on livestock feed and tortillas in the country, because a lot of the corn we send them is used in feedstock and corn is also used to make tortillas.” For years, Mexican environmental and consumer groups have been fighting against the import of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), fearing the unintended side effects from changes in the genomes of grains used to make bread, pasta and other foods, according to La Jornada and other Mexican media. Mexican supporters of the ban also contend that seeds from genetically modified corn could contaminate Mexico’s age-old native varieties of white corn, which many in the country consider a part of Mexican history and heritage. Some historians believe the people who lived in central Mexico were the first to develop white corn as far back as 9,000 years ago. Mexico has been one of the main buyers of corn produced in the U.S. for decades. Mexico imported $4.7 billion worth of corn in 2021, behind China, which imported $5.06 billion.  More than 90% of corn grown in the U.S. is genetically modified, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). GMOs were introduced in the 1990s to resist insect pests and tolerate herbicides. Many GMOs are modified to be more pest-resistant, in order to reduce pesticide use. Other common goals are weather or moisture level tolerance to allow farming in less hospitable areas. The majority of U.S. corn is produced in states such as Iowa, Nebraska and Illinois, and is shipped by rail, truck and barge, according to the USDA. The bulk of U.S. corn exports to Mexico are shipped either from the Port of New Orleans via container ship, or by truck from the port of entry in Laredo, Texas. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said Tuesday that he is continuing to speak with officials in Mexico about the plan to ban genetically modified corn, hoping to find a resolution before 2024, according to Reuters.  NCGA, which is based in Washington and represents the interests of farmers across the country, wants U.S. officials to launch a dispute settlement proceeding under the United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade pact if a resolution can’t be reached soon. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) is the only organization that can request a dispute settlement panel under the USMCA to challenge Mexico’s upcoming ban on corn imports. “We are asking very clearly for them to bring a dispute settlement and we’re convinced they would win,” Kelly said. “The USTR and USDA say they’re trying to find a resolution, short of filing a USMCA dispute settlement. In its hall, two works by Artist Enrique Agudo (Madrid, 1989) Welcome visitors. Oracle y The Alchemist They are two digital paintings from the Ipsity series that propose reflections on education and youth, using references to Pre-Raphaelite painting, Baroque, and Japanese, Hindu or even Greek mythology. Two paintings inspired by the goddess Athena «I have worked with mythology in the past because it is an inter-generational, intercultural and contextual tool beyond historical assemblage. Thanks to the metaphor, it is possible to reach aspects of human nature”, explains Aguado, who is inspired by Athena, goddess of wisdom and warTo The Oracle, and Hebe, the creator of the elixir of youth, to The Alchemist. Oracle, the value of experience “Who Oracle I wanted to be a symbol of the generation of the 20th century, in which, although institutional culture predominated, what provided the most knowledge was experience, not academic degrees. For this reason, although next to the character appears a supercomputer in the shape of an architectural ruin that predicts the best probability for any given question, in the end it is experience that provides the information to solve it. Alchemist, Elixir for the Planet In the case of the AlchemistThe character is no longer looking for a personal youth elixir, but for the planet, as the climate crisis is one of the main problems IE students will face, which has always been advocated research and environmental protection, Plus, unlike The Oracle, he does it with internet guides or YouTube videos,” explains the artist. “Technology is the fruit of culture and, at the same time, it is a tool that produces culture.” Technology, the key to both pictures Despite these references to classical culture, the pieces have been created using Latest Technology in 3D Illustration and generative animation. “Technology is the fruit of culture and, at the same time, it is a tool that produces culture,” says Aguado, who proposes a new way of enjoying a work of art. “In the Alchemist I’ve got flowers to fade and bloom seasonally and, in Oracle, the tree will grow during the next five years, the circle of students entering IE. Perfume In The Metaverse? Beauty Brands Are Now Getting In The Game – The Star Online https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/perfume-in-the-metaverse-beauty-brands-are-now-getting-in-the-game-the-star-online/ Will we one day be able to wear perfume in the metaverse? It might seem impossible, but that’s not stopping brands from presenting their new scents in these parallel worlds. In fact, Armani Beauty is doing just that by teaming up with Fortnite to promote its new fragrance. A field of all possibilities, the metaverse now allows people to buy virtual fashion and accessories, to see exhibitions or to attend concerts. Read more: Vanity Fare: Fresh, radiant and bold fragrances to lift your mood But these new worlds at the frontier of reality are above all favoured by brands seeking to gain visibility among their prime target, the Gen-Z, which masters these worlds like no other – even if only a minority have actually set foot in them. As a result, some brands have decided to go big, pulling out all the stops to stage initiatives in places where consumers are actually present – that is, in the world of gaming, a form of metaverse that is enjoyed by billions of people around the world. Armani Beauty has now partnered with one of the most popular games, Fortnite, to promote its new men’s fragrance “Code”. Evidently, it’s not a question of testing the new fragrance online, which is impossible for now. Here, it’s about encouraging users to take part in an immersive experience called “Rewrite the Code” as a means of discovering the scent – in turn making as many people as possible want to try it – and buy it. “In a world where time flows backwards, players race through maze-like speed runs to collect the numbers needed to unlock the Armani Code building and the Armani Code Parfum bottle, in order to harness its magnetic power to put the world forwards again,” explains the brand on its Instagram account. Through this game, players have the opportunity to get acquainted with the bottle, the ingredients, and especially the scent’s wider universe. Creating their own world, or a themed space in the metaverse allows brands to present their new products, while also building customer loyalty, and even creating a community. Read more: What is a Brazilian manicure and why is it now a beauty fad? Brands like Balenciaga, Gucci, Hermes and Dior – among others – have understood this perfectly, and have all jumped into the world of gaming and, even more broadly, into these new virtual worlds. Business Want Stable Economics Says Currys Chief After Pound Collapse And Bond Market Rout The Telegraph
Business Want Stable Economics Says Currys Chief After Pound Collapse And Bond Market Rout The Telegraph
‘Business Want Stable Economics’ Says Currys Chief After Pound Collapse And Bond Market Rout – The Telegraph https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/business-want-stable-economics-says-currys-chief-after-pound-collapse-and-bond-market-rout-the-telegraph/ Running an electricals retailer is a tough job at the best of times but selling television sets, mobile phones and gadgets is only getting tougher as the cost-of-living crisis prompts cash-strapped households to cut back.  Last week’s market crisis heaped yet more misery on chief executives like Alex Baldock, who has been leading a turnaround attempt at Currys since 2018. “Every business wants stable policy, stable economics, not least price and currency stability, and those things breed confidence,” he says. “We could do with some of that stability right now.” Large technology suppliers were swiftly seeking to charge more for their goods after sterling hit an all time low against the dollar last week, threatening to derail Currys’ promise that it won’t be beaten on price.  “With all the heft we carry, we can resist that better than other retailers, but not entirely, and some price rises are inevitable,” he says. Putting up prices is the last thing the 51-year-old wants to be doing as he seeks to battle a years-long decline in Currys’ share price.  “The consumer needs help through this cost-of-living crisis,” he says. “I do welcome the Government’s [energy] support, not just for consumers, but for businesses as well, that’s been essential and decisive. But equally, every business craves a stable environment.” Businesses were already reeling from surging costs such as energy and labour as well as supply chain disruption. Smaller rival AO World was recently forced to raise £40m to shore up its finances, while global players such as Eletrolux have warned of a steep drop in demand for its home appliances.  Despite returning the chain to reasonable financial health since he took over in 2018, Currys, formerly known as Dixons Carphone, was forced to cut its annual profit forecasts in July. The stock is down over 70pc since he took over and close to hitting just a tenth of its all-time peak, reached in 2015. “Ultimately, that’s how this turnaround and I, personally, will be judged,” he says, nearly four years into his revival plan. “I find the investors super supportive, they understand what we’re doing, they understand that we’re taking what was a good bricks-and-mortar retailer and repurposing it for the modern world by adding online [sales] and adding services.”  Baldock has earned a reputation for his cool-headed – some would say mechanical – approach to running one of the country’s leading electronics retailers.  During a tour of Currys’ repairs depot in Northamptonshire, an employee pulls him aside. “Colleagues are taking the mick because I did an internal video after our meeting with investors and my [shirt] collar was sticking out,” the chief executive explains. The uncharacteristic wardrobe malfunction was a rare occasion when he did not appear entirely composed in front of his 32,000-strong workforce – they were amused.  “When you meet him, he’ll come across as reserved,” says Lord Simon Wolfson, the boss of Next. “My view is, it doesn’t matter if you’re an introvert or extrovert, what does matter is the quality of your thinking and the effectiveness of your implementation, and he’s very good at that.” Lord Ian Livingston, Currys’ former chairman who hired Baldock, saids: “He’s incredibly hard working, diligent and he’s a very good listener. He doesn’t get ruffled easily. Intellectually, [he is] very, very strong, which means he can process multiple things at once.” That skill has been incredibly useful in recent years as Currys was forced to confront not only the transition to online but also Covid-related supply chain disruption.  At the beginning of the pandemic, Baldock closed all 531 Carphone Warehouse stores in the UK, to simplify the business, leading to 2,900 job losses. He later severed ties with some of the big phone networks to gain more flexibility on price. Click-and-collect services were added and live video shopping was introduced for customers stuck at home.  Currys is now focusing on credit deals and low prices in an attempt to drive sales and ensure customers don’t defect to rivals. It is also increasingly promoting repairs, rather than just the latest whizzy gadget. “We want to help shoppers get started with a laptop, get the most of it, as well as sell them shiny new kit,” he says.  “The way we do that is through repairs. We have Europe’s largest electrical repair facility with 1,000 colleagues that has 3 million products passing through it every year.  “That’s obviously great for the planet, but it’s also good for customers’ pockets because in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis, repairing stuff is on people’s minds.” Baldock insists repairs are profitable and a strategy worth pursuing. Pre-tax profits were up significantly in the 12 months to April, but Currys recently lowered its margin target from 4pc to 3pc through to 2023-24.   Some industry observers believe the retailer, which already commands a quarter of the market in the UK, will struggle to grow as it jostles for trade with the likes of Amazon and John Lewis. It accounted for 25.6pc of sales in the UK electricals market in 2021-22, down slightly from 25.8pc in 2018-19.  “There are real benefits of scale,” he says. “We matter more to customers, we matter more to our suppliers, and we have no intention of letting go of those. What we’ve said is, we will grow steadily.”  Baldock is quick to admit he has had a “comfortable and privileged” upbringing. He was born in Dorking, Surrey, but grew up in Paris. “French used to be my first language,” he says, with no detectable accent.     His father came from a working class family and joined the army before becoming a salesman for consumer giant Procter & Gamble. He climbed the ranks to eventually run Guinness and briefly chair Marks & Spencer.  Baldock’s mother, “a super bright woman”, was his father’s personal assistant.  “Back then it certainly wasn’t encouraged to go into higher education,” he says.   Aged 13, the young Baldock was “packed off to an English boarding school” – Oundle, near Peterborough – where “he loved his sport”, especially rugby.  He went on to read modern history at Worcester College, Oxford. When he graduated, he didn’t have “a particular calling beyond a vague sense that I wanted a business career” and secured a job as a management consultant at Kalchas. He spent 12 years advising business, living in Japan, Singapore, the US and Switzerland.  “Partly by luck, partly by judgement, I ended up doing operational consulting and it was a great education,” he says. “You get to see a lot of business movies early on in your life, which you can draw on later.” He then became a commercial director at Barclays and, three years later, the managing director of Lombard, a division of Royal Bank of Scotland.  “I’m sometimes described as a former banker, I don’t really see myself that way. It was a financial services firm that was rash enough to give me my first P&L [income statement],” he says.  Lord Wolfson dismisses Baldock’s modesty, saying: “He’s got the combination of: he’s very intelligent and he can get things done. Those qualities don’t always go hand in hand but they do in Alex.” After Lord Livingston hired him, a rival retailer got in touch at the time to say: “You’ve recruited the smartest guy in retail.” Baldock says: “This is a transformation that might take a little bit longer than I would have envisaged, there have been a couple of curveballs along the way. But I’m sitting here with enthusiasm, with passion and belief that we’re going to do it.”

The action is part of its investigation of the mobile gaming app E-nuggets. In its latest announcement, the ED revealed that nearly 86 bitcoins found at crypto exchange Binance were frozen. Indian Authority Freezes More Cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin, Tether, Wazirx Token India’s Directorate of Enforcement (ED) announced Friday that it has frozen two more cryptocurrencies under the country’s Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The ED is the Indian government’s law enforcement and economic intelligence agency. The announcement details: Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has freezed the crypto currencies WRX (utility token of Wazirx) and USDT (tether, an Ethereum token that is pegged to the value of a U.S. dollar) equivalent to Rs 47.64 lakhs. The ED initiated a money laundering investigation of Aamir Khan and others relating to E-nuggets on the basis of an FIR dated Feb. 15, 2021. Aamir Khan, S/o Nesar Ahmed Khan launched E-Nuggets, “which was designed for the purpose of defrauding public,” the Indian authority said. “Further, after collecting handsome amount from the public, all of the sudden, the withdrawal from the said app, was stopped, on the pretext of one and other excuses.” The agency explained that its investigations have revealed that the accused transferred the amount earned through the E-nuggets gaming app using a cryptocurrency exchange, elaborating: Amount equivalent to Rs 47.64 lakh was found in the wallet of Wazirx (crypto exchange) belonging to Aamir khan and its associates and the same has been freezed under PMLA. In addition, the ED noted that during searches conducted earlier against Amir Khan, Rs 17.32 crore cash was found and seized from the residential premises. Indian Authority Freezes More Bitcoin at Binance The latest announcement by the ED states: 85.91870554 bitcoins equivalent to USD $1,674,255.7 (equivalent to Rs 13.56 Cr approx. as per market exchange rate) found in balance in Binance exchange was freezed. In an earlier announcement, the ED said it had frozen 77.62710139 bitcoins on Binance. That means the ED froze 8.29160415 more BTC. Binance was believed to have acquired Wazirx in 2019. However, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) recently said that the acquisition “was never completed,” emphasizing that “Binance has never — at any point — owned any shares of Zanmai Labs, the entity operating Wazirx.” The ED froze the bank assets of Wazirx worth more than $8 million in August. However, earlier this month, Wazirx said that its bank accounts have been unfrozen. Following Wazirx, the ED froze crypto and bank assets worth $46 million of Vauld, a crypto platform backed by Peter Thiel. In August, the agency searched crypto exchange Coinswitch Kuber. However, the exchange’s CEO said that it was not related to money laundering investigations. Famed US Extreme Skier Gets Traditional Nepalese Funeral – The Washington Post https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/famed-us-extreme-skier-gets-traditional-nepalese-funeral-the-washington-post/ KATHMANDU, Nepal — A famed extreme skier from the United States who was killed after falling from one of the world’s tallest mountains was on Sunday given a traditional funeral at a Sherpa cremation ground as Buddhist monks officiated over a ceremony attended by family, friends and government officials. Hilaree Nelson, 49, fell off the 8,163-meter (26,775-foot) summit of the world’s eighth-highest mountain. Mount Manaslu, last week while skiing down with her partner, Jim Morrison. Nelson’s body was taken to the Sherpa cremation grounds in Kathmandu from a hospital morgue on the back of a open truck, which was decorated a poster of her and bedecked with garlands of flowers. Family, friends, mountaineers and government officials gathered at the funeral ground, offering flowers and scarfs that were place on her remains, which were then rested on a stack of wood. Buddhists monks lit the pyre as they played musical instruments and chanted prayers while mourners lit incense. Nelson’s family members had flown to Kathmandu for the funeral. She disappeared on Sept. 26 and rescuers searching by helicopter located her body two days later and it was flown to Kathmandu. Bad weather had hampered the initial search. Climbers om Mount Manaslu have been struggling with bad weather conditions and repeated avalanches. On the same day Nelson fell, an avalanche at a lower elevation on the same mountain killed a Nepalese man and injured several other climbers. Hundreds of climbers and their local guides have attempted to reach the mountain’s summit during Nepal’s autumn climbing season. Nelson, from Telluride, Colorado, and Morrison, from Tahoe, California, are extreme skiers who reached the summit of Mount Lhotse, the world’s fourth-highest mountain, in 2018. Nepal’s government has issued permits to 504 climbers during this year’s autumn climbing season. Most are climbing Mount Manaslu.

Mass Resignations Hit Chinhoyi University Of Technology – Bulawayo24 News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/mass-resignations-hit-chinhoyi-university-of-technology-bulawayo24-news/ THERE is high attrition of academic staff at Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) due to poor salaries and other conditions of service. The resignations of senior staffers, including professors, leaving for other better rewarding higher and tertiary institutions, locally and abroad, is threatening excellent education delivery at the institution. Speaking during CUT’s graduation ceremony in Chinhoyi Friday, Vice Chancellor, David Jambgwa Simbi said the brain drain had negatively impacted on the institution’s capacity to deliver on its mandate of being the citadel of technological innovations. “The issue of brain drain that nearly destroyed higher education between 2006 and 2009 is resurfacing. Since January 2022, nineteen (19) academics have resigned from CUT, of which 14 were PhDs and professors,” said Simbi. “This is a disturbing statistic as it flies in the face of efforts by the executive in championing innovation and industrialisation pillars. “Most academics are, however, leaving to introduce the same concepts at universities that they are going to.” Simbi hinted that those who left CUT would regret as better days were coming. “I, however, have a message for those who are leaving that the sun is rising,” he said. The vice chancellor lamented that the university had recorded a low uptake of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programmes at postgraduate level due to a shortage of tutors and resources. Meanwhile, CUT Chancellor, President Emmerson Mnangagwa challenged graduates to demonstrate acquired education by making products and services and should desist from bragging about having useless paper qualifications. “Paper qualification can be futile if you cannot produce something tangible. We must celebrate producing something tangible. “We must have a high performance and results culture within the higher and tertiary education ecosystem,” Mnangagwa said. He made the remarks while addressing guests the institution’s farm where he commissioned Industrial Cattle Fattening Pens and Medicinal Feed Factory, which are part of several initiatives and innovations by the institution. “We must no longer celebrate because you now have a paper qualification, but that you have been moulded in a practical way that enables you to produce goods and services.” Mnangagwa emphasised that the education system should adequately empower a graduate to self-sustain and contribute to national development to dovetail with the national thrust of modernisation and industrialisation to ensure attainment of an upper middle income society by 2030.

Anyone can read what you share. By William Siu Mr. Siu is a founder of the mobile gaming developer Storm8. Gov. Gavin Newsom of California has just signed legislation that would require social media companies to make sure new products won’t be harmful to minors. The focus is on Big Tech and social media apps like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Flying under the radar are video games even though kids in the United States spend much more time playing video games than engaging in social media, according to a recent Common Sense Media report. Last year, China acted: It prohibited minors from playing video games on school days and more than an hour on weekend and holiday nights. Teenagers then flocked to livestreaming platforms to watch others play their favorite games, so a new crackdown bars children from watching livestreams after 10 p.m. The goal is to reduce addiction to gaming or, as the Chinese government calls it, “spiritual opium,” because of concerns about how it harms mental health and academic study. Such bans may sound outrageous even for an authoritarian country like China. But as a gaming entrepreneur in the United States for 13 years and a father of two young daughters, I don’t think parents are doing enough to protect kids from the potential harms of video games. In 2009, I co-founded Storm8, a video game developer. I have launched more than 50 mobile games. These have been downloaded more than a billion times and have generated more than $1 billion in sales. I am very familiar with game addiction, as that’s what I thought about every day for more than a decade. (We sold the company in 2020.) I hired product managers and engineers to track everything players did and analyze their behavior. Using the data we collected, we experimented with every feature of our games to see which versions allowed us to extract the most time and money from our players. For us, game addiction was by design: It meant success for our business. Here’s an example of how addiction is cultivated in gaming. If you have played mobile games like Candy Crush Saga, you are familiar with the concept of “lives.” You are given five lives a day; each time you lose a game, you lose a life. Run out of lives, and you can’t play again until your supply is replenished. ’ Why, you might ask, would someone get addicted if the developers prevent players from gaming as much as they like? I have used the same mechanic in my own games, and this is how I explained it to my engineering team. Say I have a delicious chocolate cake. If I give you the entire cake, you might eat the whole thing in one go because it’s the best cake you ever had. But you likely will “overdose” and may not want to touch chocolate cake again. What if, instead, I give you a tiny slice each day? Gradually, you develop a daily habit, and you might end up buying 10 cakes from me. That’s the ultimate goal: to build habit-forming games that have players coming back every day. In other words, it takes away the decision-making. We wanted people to reach for their phones first thing in the morning and jump right into our games, just as they check their social media and emails. For a long time, I didn’t see a problem. I saw our mission as bringing joy and entertainment to players. This changed when my two toddlers became old enough to take an interest in playing the very games I had built. Thinking about my games in my daughters’ hands, I had to confront what these products really were and what they could do. Knowing all the techniques with which we tried to bring about addiction, I realized I didn’t want my children exposed to that risk. My daughters are now 3 and 4 years old and I have yet to show them any of the games I have designed. There is some debate among researchers and health care practitioners that gaming can become a true addiction, but according to the World Health Organization, “gaming disorder” can “result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning.” The over-the-top experiences and rewards built into video games can stimulate our brains to release dopamine. Dopamine, the powerful “feel good” neurotransmitter, motivates us to seek more of these pleasurable activities. This is what can lead to addictive behavior. One recent study followed adolescent video-game players for six years. Most were able to enjoy playing without any harmful consequences. But a significant minority, 10 percent, developed pathological tendencies related to video games, including having difficulty stopping play. Compared with the other group in the study, these players displayed higher levels of depression, aggression, shyness, problematic phone use and anxiety by the time they were emerging into adulthood. I’m not proud that I had a hand in furthering these problems. As a matter of fact, I tell my daughters that I make board games like the ones they play at school. Whenever I encourage my daughters to strive to make a positive difference in the world, I question whether I have done the same. I am not suggesting that we regulate video games as China has. But here are three ways that we should think about addressing this issue: Start with parent training. Parents need to be made aware of the negative impact of the video games they may be letting their children play. I get that sometimes we need to occupy our kids, and it’s very tempting to hand them a phone. But we need to be better gatekeepers. It’s hard to change a behavior if you can’t first measure it. Use tools, such as Apple’s Screen Time or Google’s Digital Wellbeing, to create awareness of just how much time you or your children are spending on games — you’ll be surprised. Finally, strike a balance. Games can be fun, of course; we just need to find moderation. When I was growing up, my parents pushed me to eat more vegetables and fruits. With technology so integral to our lives, we need to treat digital wellness like physical wellness and make sure we encourage behavior that’s good for us. I have realized that I have a role to play, too, beyond keeping my daughters safe. Going forward, I’ve decided to use my knowledge about video game design for good, to try to design educational games that are more engaging. Recently I had a chance to participate in a math program for young children at Stanford’s Haas Center for Public Services. I worked with two kindergartners and saw how technology and games could help them learn. I asked them what they were interested in and created math games with themes that they liked. The children were excited to play the games, and in two months, they went from skipping numbers when counting to accurately counting from 1 to 100 and even doing simple addition. Even so, I believe there is a lot more waiting for kids beyond that screen.

One Of Two Long Overdue Bexar County Jail Studies Released – Texas Public Radio https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/one-of-two-long-overdue-bexar-county-jail-studies-released-texas-public-radio/ Published October 1, 2022 at 1:01 PM CDT The office of Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar released a long overdue study of the jail on Friday. The new report focused on how to better staff the facility that has struggled to keep up at a critical time. The number of people jailed remains high, and deputies complain about the state of both the jail infrastructure and their quality of life. Staff turnover last year was 33%, according to the report from Detain Inc., and the amount of overtime shot up 115% between 2018 and 2021. The report targeted pay increases (15-20%) and the use of forced overtime decreases. The county paid the lowest of the four largest metropolitan jails in 2021. The use of overtime is keeping the jail running in compliance with minimum safety standards, but has pushed the county into a negative feedback loop. As the use of forced, mandatory overtime goes up, the ability to retain staff goes down, increasing the need to heap more overtime onto people. The report recommended going to a 12-hour shifts to reduce the total number of days people work. “In other words, you have to have more bodies, more deputies to cover the same amount of time on 12 hour shifts, then you do eight hour shifts. However, what that might possibly do is help slow down our turnover,” Salazar said. It may allow for more days off and give people additional confidence in their schedules that they know when they go in, when they leave, and when they are off. That’s something that has lacked the past few years, according to the Deputy Sheriffs Association of Bexar County, the deputies’ union. “I’m 100% behind it,” said Ron Tooke, president of the group, He added that he hopes it will reduce the amount of time people are working. “They’re already doing 12 hour shifts — let’s not kid ourselves about that. So why not give them set 12 hour shifts, and then give them an option of taking their day, or day and a half, or two that they can actually get away from that place?” he asked. One of the chief complaints from his members is how forced overtime affects their lives, he said. Another is the loss of accrued holiday and vacation hours at the beginning of each fiscal year. He said nearly $3 million in compensation had been taken from his members since 2016. Tooke is cautiously optimistic the plan could work, but, he added, it isn’t the first time he has heard plans to solve this problem. Salazar said he will try out the new shift schedule in one of the three facilities that make up the jail. There was growing animosity over the past six months between the jailers union and the county as they pushed for improvements during this budget cycle. Tooke has repeatedly said the two jail audits weren’t released before the budget was set for political reasons, an opinion shared by some commissioners’ staff. The sheriff and the county commissioners seemed to race each other to hire independent consultants (independent of each other) last October. When the two studies were initially discussed, both had been anticipated to take “a few months” or less than a year. Ever since then, it’s been a series of delays. Bexar County commissioners have yet to release a study they voted on last October from Florida-based American Correctional Consultants. County staff told TPR they hadn’t received a finalized version of the study yet. Salazar unilaterally released his report to the public on Friday, taking county staff by surprise. They had to get copies from the press. Salazar praised the detail in the 60-page document, which gave executive staff a lot of homework and called on them to collect more data to deliver better results. Tooke questioned how a staff already struggling to keep enough bodies in it to remain in compliance with safety standards will have time plan and execute new data collection plans. Salazar praised the document and said everything it is is achievable. The study recommended against privatizing jail functions. It said it could find no empirical data on cost savings.

City To Roll Out Mobile Health Clinic | News, Sports, Jobs – Warren Tribune Chronicle https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/city-to-roll-out-mobile-health-clinic-news-sports-jobs-warren-tribune-chronicle/ WARREN — The city will purchase a $230,000 neighborhood health clinic van to provide medical services to residents in their neighborhoods instead of waiting for them to come to the Warren City Health District offices. The new vehicle will allow the city’s health district to do preventive screenings, such as taking blood pressure; conduct glucose and cholesterol testing; provide flu, COVID-19 and other vaccines; offer HIV, STD and hepatitis C testing; as well as promote healthy living. “With St. Joseph (Warren) Hospital moving, there may be some people that feel they won’t have access to needed services,” Cheryl Strother, director of nursing at the Warren City Health District, said. “We already know we are not reaching all of those who are in need of medical assistance in the city because when we participate in health fairs in churches, barbershops and other locations, there often are crowds of people who attend. They do not come to our clinic.” Mercy Health announced in May that it will move St. Joseph Warren Hospital from Eastland Avenue in the city to a new 62-acre campus next to Kent State University at Trumbull campus in Champion. The new 400,000-square-foot facility — the first new hospital built in the Mahoning Valley since Mercy constructed St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital in 2007 — is planned to have 241 beds and will provide full inpatient and outpatient services, plus have room to grow. Also planned is a medical office building adjacent to the hospital that will offer specialist care. On Eastland Avenue SE, the present facility will be torn down, but Mercy will continue to maintain the campus and offer outpatient services at the medical office building next to the hospital. Strother said people — especially in minority communities — have not been coming to the city’s health clinic, and they feel they will not have access to services once the current St. Joseph is closed. “We want to establish a level of trust,” she said. “We will do this by taking services to them. We want them to know they are seen and we’re interested in providing for their needs by bringing services to where they are. “A lot of times, people will be more open to providing information about their health concerns if they are met where they are,” Strother said. Funding for the vehicle is expected to come from a $184,149 grant from the Trumbull Memorial Health Foundation and a $75,000 donation from Warren Councilman Ronald C. White, D-7th Ward, who will provide funds from the $500,000 that each council member has been allocated in American Rescue Plan funds. With this contribution, White will have $361,900 remaining of his ward’s ARP money allocation remaining. In addition, the health department has been approved for another $75,000 grant from a National Association of County and City Health Officials grant award — Partnering for Vaccine Equity project — to address inequities in COVID-19 and influenza vaccination coverage among racial and ethnic minority adults. “One of the greatest benefits of mobile clinics is they make services easily accessible to people who would otherwise be unable to receive them,” she said. “The fact that these clinics are mobile means that those who are unable to leave their homes and walk, ride or drive all the way to health clinics and hospitals can have these services brought to their doorsteps.” The idea of a mobile van came while Strother was applying for a grant that showed a high social vulnerability index in different census tracts around the city. Strother recalled working on a similar, but smaller, version of a mobile health clinic in the mid-1990s, while she worked at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. “I’m not aware of anything like this in Mahoning and Trumbull counties,” she said.
