Mind Your ZZZs… More So If You Are A Night Owl – DTNEXT https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/mind-your-zzzs-more-so-if-you-are-a-night-owl-dtnext/ Sleep deprivation in long run leads to Alzheimer’s: Expert Scientific research on Alzheimer’s patients has shown that sound sleep for seven to eight hours every day is absolutely essential. Sleep is the time for the restorative activity for the body and mind; the brain cleanses itself of the abnormal proteins beta-amyloid and tau that are created due to high metabolic activity. Sleep deprivation in the long run accumulates and is detrimental to brain health leading to Alzheimer’s, says Dr Naresh Purohit, executive member of the Indian Academy of Neurosciences. Sharing his concern on the rise in Alzheimer’s cases in the country, Dr Purohit, Principal Investigator for the Association of Studies for Mental Care, said at a recent event that India is on the cusp of a dementia epidemic with dementia patients projected to spike from the 44 lakh at present to over one crore by 2050. Incidentally, this surge can be ascribed to the growth in our geriatric population as India moves closer to becoming the world’s most populous country, surpassing even China. He said Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is one of the neuro-degenerative diseases and accounts for sixty to seventy per cent of cases of dementia. Usually, the disease starts slowly and turns worse in due course of time. “One of the most common symptoms is memory loss, even about the recent events. This is known as shortterm memory loss syndrome. With the advancement of the problem, symptoms of trouble with the loss of motivation, language, mood swing, easily getting lost, issues with behaviour and taking self-care etc are seen among the affected persons,” he added. Dr Purohit, also Advisor for National Mental Health Programme, averred that in Alzheimer’s patients the ability to switch from a state of wandering mind to attentiveness breaks down leading to memory lapses and disorientation. He cautions, that there is no cure or medicine to date for this ailment and therefore it is important to take steps to delay the onset of the disease. He pointed out that medical research has established conclusively that smoking and excess sugar is harmful to the body but it is a big risk factor for developing dementia as well. Interestingly, factors that are linked to the onset of diabetes such as obesity and stress are also the factors that are likely to lead to Alzheimer’s and dementia, he added. Experts explained that a healthy diet is another indispensable factor in how to delay the onset of neurological age-related conditions like Alzheimer’s. They suggest following a Mediterranean diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds. Seafood and eating eggs thrice a week while avoiding red meat, processed foods, and white flour, help not only in preventing dementia but also heart disease. Experts revealed that focussed activity such as practising meditation for a sustained period changes the brain structures and helps patients with memory-related disorders. “People need to do something that will challenge their brain and make one feel wanted,” experts said. They emphasised that half an hour of physical exercise every day, whether it be Yoga or even walking is non-negotiable. Such activities help to maintain the fitness of not just the body but also the mind. They averred that keeping the mind active be it through problem-solving, crossword or even learning languages helps immensely. Social interactions, taking part in clubs and associations and doing charity work especially to keep the mind engaged after retirement are crucial. Experts clarified that WhatsApping or even being on Instagram is not social interaction.

Binance Founder Changpeng ‘CZ’ Zhao Shares His Vision Of Web3 Opportunities At TC Sessions: Crypto – TechCrunch https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/binance-founder-changpeng-cz-zhao-shares-his-vision-of-web3-opportunities-at-tc-sessions-crypto-techcrunch/ When it comes to the decentralized world of crypto, few single entities loom larger or carry more weight in the industry than exchange behemoth Binance. The blockchain giant processed $34 trillion in trading volume in 2021, it says, and the exchange shows few signs of resting on its laurels as it pursues bold new bets to diversify its business. At the forefront of these changes is Binance founder and CEO Changpeng Zhao. The leader, commonly known as “CZ,” has managed to cultivate a celebrity status in the crypto space rivaled only by some of the space’s patron saints, including the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto and Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin. Zhao is worth an estimated $65 billion. We’re thrilled to welcome Changpeng Zhao to TC Sessions: Crypto 2022 in Miami on November 17. CZ will join our stage virtually and we’re looking forward to discussing global market opportunities in a bear market, the regulatory challenges up ahead and where opportunities are (and aren’t) in web3. Binance has been extremely busy in 2022, even amid a crash in cryptocurrency prices and macroeconomic uncertainty. The company has continued to diversify its offerings and scour for new markets. In recent months, the company’s stateside entity Binance.US earned new investment as it strives to topple incumbents like Coinbase. Competitors have also been taking notice. And while Binance sits comfortably atop the market for crypto exchanges, rising competitors like FTX are looking to find new opportunities to increase their market share, pursuing bold M&A strategies and scaling venture investments. The exchange’s breakneck growth has attracted the attention of regulators as well, particularly in the United States. This summer, Bloomberg reported that the SEC was investigating Binance’s 2017 coin offering of their BNB token. That ecosystem is now the third-largest non-stablecoin cryptocurrency by market cap with a value north of $40 billion. TC Sessions: Crypto takes place on November 17 in Miami. Take advantage of our special launch pricing — save $250 on General Admission passes while supplies last. Buy your pass today, and then join the web3, DeFi and NFT communities to keep up with the ever-evolving and always exciting cryptoverse. Europe Gaming Market Value In 2022 Novinite.com
Europe Gaming Market Value In 2022 – Novinite.com https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/europe-gaming-market-value-in-2022-novinite-com/ Europe has established gaming in their commercial industry and become a part of their culture. Their video game industry has gotten one-third of the total market value. In fact, their gaming industry has been a profitable market, which is why Chinese companies have acquired it the most. Keep reading to learn about Europe’s gaming market value in 2022. European Companies In The Gaming Market The German market is among the leading countries, with it being the fifth largest in the gaming market, based on its revenue in 2021 of having nearly €10 billion turnover. Germany has increased by 20% in turnover in just a year.  Also, the Germans are known for their brick-and-mortar casinos. But online casinos have also been prominent as Lowen Play has partnered with iSoftBet and agreed to make iSoftBet’s games releases available on its online casino platform in Spain. There are online gambling sites where you can play online casinos, and you can find more details here. The revenue in the European region is projected to reach US$25.72 billion in 2022 and is expected to have an annual growth rate of 7.96%. So, the video game projected market volume is US$37.72 billion by 2027. It’s also expected for the number of users to rise, amounting to 343.4 million users by 2027. Mobile games have become the largest segment in the digital gaming industry, with a market value of US$16.11 billion in 2022.  These European Gaming Companies have paved the way to put the gaming market of the European region at the top.  Ubisoft Ubisoft has made high-quality games where it has been one of the developers of one of all-time favorite games, such as Super Mario. Other popular games include 2048, where they have now owned the company, and South Park and Assassin’s Creed, where they’re the games’ publisher.  Their Chief Financial Officer, Frédérick Duguet, stated that they have performed slightly better than expected during the first quarter. Assassin’s Creed and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege have been notable for their performances.  From their net bookings, it has totaled €293.3 million, which exceeded their target of around €280.0 million during the first quarter of 2022-23. However, it’s been down to 10% as last year’s first quarter totaled €326.0 million. Rockstar North Rockstar North is one of the developers of the best-selling Grand Theft Auto Series. One of their franchises, GTA V, has shipped 380 million units and become the second highest-selling game of all time. However, with GTA VI in development, there has been a leak where a third party had illegally accessed confidential information from their internal systems. Such a GTA VI leak has taken Take-Two (Rockstar North and GTA publisher’s parent company) shares down to 5.8% in the premarket.  On the GTAForums, a user named Teapotuberhacker posted links to videos of what appears to be the early build of GTA VI. It also contains 10,000 lines of the game’s source code, which it’s been called “one of the biggest leaks in video game history.”  Space Ape Space Ape is known for developing and publishing mobile games such as Boom Beach: Frontlines, Beatstar – Touch Your Music, and Fastlane: Road to Revenge. Some of their other mobile games are: Rival Kingdoms Transformers: Earth Wars Samurai Siege Beatstar – Touch Your Music has made $73 million in revenue, with 38 million downloads in its first year. The Beatstar music label has partnered with Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and more.  The COO, Simon Hade, stated that their incredible music industry partners are doing innovative things in the gaming scene, where a new set of the audience gets to discover new music in the game. Conclusion With all the games currently developing in Europe, it’s safe to assume that their market value will continue to rise. The companies mentioned here are only some of the most popular video game developers in Europe. Still, it’s no wonder why other companies are acquiring them.

Moderate Republicans Sidelined As Texans Prepare To Go To The Polls San Antonio Report
Moderate Republicans Sidelined As Texans Prepare To Go To The Polls San Antonio Report
Moderate Republicans Sidelined As Texans Prepare To Go To The Polls – San Antonio Report https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/moderate-republicans-sidelined-as-texans-prepare-to-go-to-the-polls-san-antonio-report/ Moderate Texas Republicans have been on my mind in recent weeks, although less than 40 days from now I’ll be working my way through a lengthy midterm election ballot with very few such candidates seeking my vote. Full disclosure: I am an independent who votes both ways — or at least has done so in the past. In recent years, most of my votes have gone to Democrats. That’s because most moderate Texan Republicans whose agendas might appeal to me and other independents have been benched and are left to watch electoral politics from the sidelines. The party dominated for the last six years by former President Donald Trump and his legions of Make America Great Again loyalists leaves no room for common-sense, right-center political leaders. Extremism is evident in both parties, although there is no rough equivalency as some of my readers will no doubt assert in posted comments. Trump and other election-denier extremists who turned a blind eye to the Jan. 6 insurrection on the Capitol absolutely dominate the Republican Party, so much so that many moderate Republicans have walked away from incumbency rather than support the party platform or face a Trump-backed challenger. Far-left officeholders occupy the back bench of the Democratic Party, and while they are widely supported by younger voters, they show no progress in winning national office. I’m not even sure the Republican Party of 2022 — the party of Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and the criminally indicted Attorney General Ken Paxton — even recognizes moderates as members anymore. Who am I talking about? Former U.S. Rep. Will Hurd, former Texas House Speaker Joe Straus, former Texas Secretary of State and former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Antonio “Tony” Garza and soon-to-be former state Rep. Lyle Larson, to name a few who call the San Antonio metro area home. All but Garza have walked away from incumbency. While none of those four is on the November ballot, there is reason to believe the pendulum could swing from the extreme right back toward the center by the time voters go to the polls in 2024. It’s a big “if.” The reset button will be hit only if the party moves past Trump, and if Democrats and independent voters stop Republicans in November from winning control of the U.S. House or Senate. To repeat myself, it’s a big “if.” What happens in Texas and what happens nationally might or might not be the same. The Republicans who control all statewide offices and the Legislature in Texas openly play to their primary voters rather than the majority of citizens when it comes to setting agendas. Yet one only has to harken back to 2018 when Democrats, led by former El Paso Congressman Beto O’Rourke’s near-miss bid to unseat Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, flipped 14 legislative seats. What the anti-transgender “bathroom bill” and other divisive social issues did then could occur yet again after Republicans refused to stop teenagers from buying assault weapons, approved open carry of handguns without background checks and passed some of the most restrictive anti-abortion laws in the country. Perhaps history will repeat itself, perhaps not in a state where half of the registered voters typically do not bother to vote in midterm elections. One certainty: Republican leaders have few places to go to get out their message these days. They should consider the San Antonio Report as one available platform to reach voters in San Antonio. Garza writes a must-read newsletter for Mexico watchers. From time to time, it is reprinted here, including his latest, “Higher stakes, calmer tones in US-Mexico relationship,” published Sept. 19. Hurd’s latest blog, headlined “To Understand the Border Crisis, We Must Understand Asylum,” was published Sept. 29. It’s a really smart read on the little understood subject of political asylum. Hurd, an expert on national security, intelligence and cybersecurity, ranges across a broad spectrum of topics in his blog and his recently published book, American Reboot. One does not have to necessarily agree with Garza on Mexico or Hurd on immigration, but their voices are important, their views are grounded in reality and they deserve to be read and heard. The San Antonio Express-News published an interview with Larson last week in which the six-term legislator renews his call for term limits to state office and offers a no-holds-barred assessment of the Republican Party and its leadership in Texas. Larson, a former San Antonio city councilman, Bexar County county commissioner and businessman, traveled the state to just about every underground water district and made himself an expert among elected leaders on the subject of water management and conservation. Losing his expertise in the Legislature is just that: a real loss. Straus considered and ultimately passed on a run for state office this year after previously choosing not to seek reelection to his legislative seat and as House speaker. What we lost was Straus’ balanced, low-key approach to building consensus across party lines on public education funding and other critical issues, and his unapologetic dismissal of divisive social issues. Straus, too, writes a good op-ed from time to time. Perhaps the sidelined moderate Republicans will use their time now to write with greater frequency. If so, I hope you read them here, even if what they have to say doesn’t conform to my views or yours. After all, this news and civic engagement site was started more than 10 years ago to give voice to intelligent people across the political and cultural spectrum in San Antonio. Turkish Tourists Prefer Balkan Countries For Vacation Hurriyet Daily News
Turkish Tourists Prefer Balkan Countries For Vacation – Hurriyet Daily News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/turkish-tourists-prefer-balkan-countries-for-vacation-hurriyet-daily-news/ ISTANBUL – Demirören News Agency Balkan countries are the foremost choice of Turks for holidaying thanks to visa liberalization, geographical proximity, cultural partnership, affordability and low exchange rates. class=’cf’ “The Balkans are very attractive to Turkish tourists as they offer visa-free travel, are affordable, and are close to Türkiye,” said Muhammet Ali Köprü, the head of a tour operator company, Malitur. He noted that while tourism has been one of the most affected sectors by the pandemic, the demands have reached high levels with the normalization. Underlining that the Balkans is a popular destination in all seasons, Köprü said: “Turkish citizens prefer countries that do not require visas for an easier holiday. The Balkans is the optimum choice for historical and cultural travels, rather than the classic beach vacation.” Köprü also pointed out that it is very possible to come across many Ottoman artifacts in cities such as Sarajevo, Skopje, Ohrid and Pristina. “The Balkans is a ‘geography connected to our hearts.’ We have many similarities culturally and gastronomically, which is very suitable for the Turks’ taste.” “There are both air and road alternatives in the Balkan tours, which save time compared to long and tiring travels,” Köprü said, noting that there are direct flights from both international airports in Istanbul. class=’cf’ Amid the euro’s upward trend, the Turkish Lira maintains its strength against the currencies of the Balkan countries, Köprü informed. “Turkish Lira is still valuable against Serbia’s dinar, Romania’s Leu, Albania’s lek and North Macedonia’s dinar. Therefore, tour prices are also cheaper,” he explained. Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania stand out in travel preferences as they grant visa liberalization to Turkish citizens. Recently, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced that citizens of Türkiye and Serbia are now able to visit the two countries with their identity cards, thanks to a deal made during his visit to Serbia. “Our excellent relations are improving day by day. The protocol signed on travel with identity will take our relations to a new level,” he stated. Some 300,000 tourists visited Türkiye from Serbia in 2022, and traveling with identity will increase this number, along with providing the businessmen to carry out their mutual travels much more easily, Erdoğan said. Additionally, Türkiye and Bosnia also decided to pave the way for their citizens to travel between the two countries with identity cards. class=’cf’ “In a new step, we have decided to make round trips between Bosnia and Herzegovina-Türkiye with identity cards,” Erdoğan stated. Türkiye keeps its connection strong with the Balkans as the country has deep-rooted historical, human, and cultural ties in the region and tries to avoid tensions, the president said.

Chinese Billionaire Richard Liu Settles US Rape Allegation – 69News WFMZ-TV https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/chinese-billionaire-richard-liu-settles-us-rape-allegation-69news-wfmz-tv/ MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Chinese billionaire and JD.com founder Richard Liu agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by a former University of Minnesota student who alleged he raped her in her Minneapolis apartment after a night of dinner and drinks with wealthy Chinese executives in 2018, attorneys for both sides announced late Saturday. A settlement amount was not disclosed. Richard Liu, who stepped down as the CEO of Beijing-based e-commerce company JD.com this year amid increased government scrutiny of China’s technology industry, has denied raping the woman, Jingyao Liu, and prosecutors never filed criminal charges. A joint statement from attorneys for both sides called the encounter “a misunderstanding.” “The incident between Ms. Jingyao Liu and Mr. Richard Liu in Minnesota in 2018 resulted in a misunderstanding that has consumed substantial public attention and brought profound suffering to the parties and their families,” the joint statement said. “Today, the parties agreed to set aside their differences, and settle their legal dispute in order to avoid further pain and suffering caused by the lawsuit.” The settlement was announced just two days before the civil trial was set to begin Monday in a Minneapolis courtroom. On Friday, a jury of seven men and five women were picked to hear the case. Richard Liu is a celebrity in China, part of a generation of entrepreneurs who created the country’s internet, e-commerce, mobile phone and other technology industries since the late 1990s. Forbes estimated his wealth at $10.9 billion on Saturday. Jingyao Liu alleges the attack happened in 2018 while Richard Liu was in Minneapolis for a weeklong residency in the University of Minnesota’s doctor of business administration China program, geared toward high-level executives in China. Jingyao Liu, a Chinese citizen, was at the university on a student visa and was a volunteer in the program at the time. The Associated Press does not generally name people alleging sexual assault, but Jingyao Liu has agreed to be identified publicly. Jingyao Liu was 21 and Richard Liu was in his mid-40s at the time, the lawsuit said. They are not related. Richard Liu, also known as Liu Qiangdong, was arrested on suspicion of felony rape in August 2018, but prosecutors said the case had “profound evidentiary problems” and declined to file criminal charges. Jingyao Liu sued Richard Liu and JD.com in 2019, alleging sexual assault and battery, along with false imprisonment. The case drew widespread attention at a time when the #MeToo movement was gaining traction in China. Richard Liu’s supporters and opponents waged an aggressive public relations campaigns on Chinese social media; censors shut down some accounts that supported Jingyao Liu for “violating regulations.” Jingyao Liu said in her lawsuit that she had to withdraw from classes in fall 2018 and seek counseling and treatment. Her attorney said she has since graduated but has post-traumatic stress disorder. She sought compensatory as well as punitive damages from Richard Liu. Her lawsuit said she was seeking more than $50,000, a standard figure that must be listed in Minnesota if a plaintiff intends to seek any larger amount. She was expected to ask a jury to award much more. On the night of the alleged attack, according to the lawsuit, Richard Liu and other executives went to a Japanese restaurant in Minneapolis and one of the men invited Jingyao Liu at Richard Liu’s request. She felt coerced to drink as the powerful men toasted her, and Richard Liu said she would dishonor him if she did not join in, her lawsuit claimed. According to text messages reviewed by The Associated Press and Jingyao Liu’s interviews with police, she said that after the dinner Richard Liu pulled her into a limousine and groped her despite her protests. She said he raped her at her apartment. At one point, she texted a friend: “I begged him don’t. But he didn’t listen.” Her friend notified police, who went to her apartment. Jingyao Liu told one officer, “I was raped but not that kind of rape,” according to police. When asked to explain, she changed the subject and said Richard Liu was famous and she was afraid. She told the officer that the sex was “spontaneous” and she did not want police to get involved. Police said they released Richard Liu because “it was unclear if a crime had actually taken place.” In a later interview with an investigator, Richard Liu said the sex was consensual and the woman “enjoyed the whole process very much.” Jingyao Liu told a police sergeant that she wanted to talk with Richard Liu’s attorney and threatened to go to the media if she did not, according to police. Richard Liu’s former attorney recorded the phone call, in which Jingyao Liu said she didn’t want the case to be in the newspaper and “I just need payment money and apologize and that’s all.” A recording of the phone call was expected to be played as evidence at trial. Surveillance videos from the restaurant, the restaurant’s exterior and the halls of the woman’s apartment complex were also expected to be played for jurors. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. Tomorrows Top 25 Today: Ole Miss Makes Key Jump As College Football Rankings Undergo Major Reshuffling CBS Sports
Tomorrow’s Top 25 Today: Ole Miss Makes Key Jump As College Football Rankings Undergo Major Reshuffling – CBS Sports https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/tomorrows-top-25-today-ole-miss-makes-key-jump-as-college-football-rankings-undergo-major-reshuffling-cbs-sports/ One of the primary storylines throughout Week 5 was a curiosity over how many undefeated teams would make it through the weekend maintaining that moniker. College football’s oft-unbalanced schedules create circumstances in which teams can get through the first month of the season with a zero in the loss column even if that’s not indicative of their true standing within the sport. It’s right about now — one-third of the way through the season — when conference play begins and that number declines rapidly. Week 5 was a “prove it” period for many teams in the eyes of the AP Top 25 poll voters.  Oklahoma State and Ole Miss are two examples of teams coming out on the positive end of this “prove it” weekend with both remaining undefeated despite facing ranked opponents . The Cowboys’ best win had previously been Arizona State until Mike Gundy’s squad got in and out of Waco, Texas, with a win against Baylor. Similarly, the Rebels had just one win against a Power Five opponent prior to holding off Kentucky with a pair of fourth-quarter defensive stands. Oklahoma State and Ole Miss are not only slated for a bump up in the rankings, they picked up wins that will solidify their positions as two of the better teams in the country.  Just as we saw some ranked teams solidify their position, others fell short in their “prove it” opportunities. Minnesota had surged into the national picture with its win against Michigan State but will drop in the polls after falling to Purdue. The same was expected for Washington and Florida State as they were also favored to win this weekend but instead dropped from the ranks of the unbeaten. How voters respond to these setbacks will differ, but what’s certain is that all of these teams will be ranked lower than they were going into the weekend.  The most interesting debate for the AP Top 25 will be how the voters reward previously unranked teams that made it through the weekend undefeated. Kansas was the first team on the outside looking in last week — don’t blame us, they were No. 23 in the CBS Sports 131 — so the Jayhawks appearing in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2009 is basically a guarantee. However, the rest of the group was not as well represented in last week’s balloting. Will simply being undefeated be enough to jump other teams in the battle for those last 10-12 spots? UCLA and TCU seem like locks to not only be ranked but see massive jumps ahead of one-loss teams that were ranked last week as the Bruins knocked off Washington Friday night and TCU absolutely throttled Oklahoma Saturday afternoon. Still, Syracuse (ranked in the Coaches Poll last week), James Madison and others will be looking for more respect from the AP Top 25 voters.  Here’s how we think the new AP Top 25 college football rankings will look on Sunday. 1. Georgia (Last week — 1): The Bulldogs will drop some of their 55 first-place votes after avoiding an upset at Missouri, just not enough to lose the No. 1 spot. The concerns over the quality of performance these last two weeks are fair as the debate continues around the top three teams in the country, but 87% of voters thought the Bulldogs were No. 1 last week, and a narrow win won’t be the reason a majority of those voters change their mind Sunday.  2. Alabama (2): All the attention will be on Bryce Young’s status after the reigning Heisman Trophy winner suffered a shoulder injury in the 49-26 win at Arkansas. But the win, especially given the loss of Young, speaks to an Alabama team that just logged one of its best performances in a true road environment since the start of last season.  3. Ohio State (3): No Jaxon Smith-Njigba, no TreVeyon Henderson, no problem for the Buckeyes. There was a heated moment between Ryan Day and Greg Schiano, but ultimately, Ohio State cruised in a 49-10 win over Rutgers. 4. Clemson (5): Two of the toughest teams in the ACC have challenged Clemson in the last two weeks, and the Tigers have passed each test, winning both a high-scoring shootout with Wake Forest and then a low-scoring grinder with NC State. The defensive effort and quality of win should be enough to close the already narrow gap in voting points between Clemson and Michigan, providing a slight bump up in the new rankings.   5. Michigan (4): The Wolverines refused to fall victim to the familiar storyline of a top-five team falling at Iowa, using an early lead to avoid any upset anxiety in a 27-14 win. Michigan set the tone, created a difficult situation for Iowa’s offense with a double-digit deficit and rode yet another 100-yard rushing performance from Blake Corum to the its road win of the season.  6. USC (6): The Trojans are now 5-0 after beating Arizona State on Saturday night. The next two weeks will do a better job of helping voters judge USC against the best teams in the country with a visit from Washington State on Oct. 8 and a trip to Utah on Oct. 15.  7. Oklahoma State (9): The change in ranking won’t be as significant as the change in opinion regarding Oklahoma State. The Cowboys were less than 40 points behind the Tennessee last week (1119 to 1081), and that was before Oklahoma State had a single ranked win to its name this season. We’re projecting a jump ahead of the Volunteers now that the Pokes’ profile has been solidified with a road win at Baylor.   8. Tennessee (8): The Vols were off in Week 5 and will be back in action next week at LSU.  9. Ole Miss (14): Lane Kiffin has the Rebels off to a 5-0 start for the first time since 2014, and the defense that won the game against Kentucky has been a highlight all season. This was Kiffin’s first top-10 win since he was leading USC in 2011. Up next is Vanderbilt. 10. Penn State (11): Somewhere between the undefeated teams that notched “prove it” wins and the ones that took their first loss you’ll find Penn State, which turned the ball over enough to get knocked off. Luckily, it was facing a Northwestern team that could not turn those opportunities into enough points. The Nittany Lions will get moved around in the shuffle at the top of the rankings, but they’re not a team voters will identify for a big jump after the 17-7 win against the Wildcats.  11. NC State (10): When the top of the rankings are reshuffled, it’s going to be tough to move NC State too far down given the Wolfpack’s only loss just came on the road to a top-five Clemson team rounding into form. The challenge for Dave Doeren’s group will be regrouping after the defeat with a key stretch ahead that includes Florida State and Syracuse.   12. Kentucky (7): The floor for Kentucky’s drop is still high considering the Wildcats are 4-1 with a road win in conference play. Plus, the 22-19 loss at Ole Miss suggests little separation between the two teams. What’s disappointing is the opportunity lost as two turnovers in the final 3 minutes of the game prevented the Wildcats from improving to 5-0.  13. Utah (12): What was a close contest in the third quarter got blown open by a late 21-0 run and Utah’s 42-16 win against Oregon State will meet the eye test for voters. The Utes have won four straight since the season-opening loss to Florida, winning those games by margins of 67, 28, 21 and 26 points.  14. Oregon (13): The Ducks jumped out to a 31-3 halftime lead against Stanford and are in control over their Pac-12 North rival.  15. Kansas (NR): The chorus has been booming for Kansas to be ranked for weeks, and after grinding out a 14-11 win against Iowa State to improve to 5-0 for the first time since 2009, the Jayhawks will be ranked for the first time since 2009. The question is whether they are this high. 16. UCLA (NR): Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson told the media he and his teammates heard the critics who doubted the strength of UCLA’s undefeated start and took it as motivation with a top-15 team in town. The 40-32 win against Washington was not indicative of how the Bruins controlled the contest with a sizable lead for much of the evening, but the quality win and 5-0 record will spark a big move up in the rankings.  17. TCU (NR): When the best wins on TCU’s profile were Colorado and SMU, it was understandable to leave the Horned Frogs off top 25 ballots. But considering not just the opponent but the margin in a 55-24 win against Oklahoma. it is undeniable that Sonny Dykes’ team is deserving of a spot in the AP Top 25 on Sunday. 18. BYU (19): Things got a little dicey against Utah State in a 12-point win, so we’re projecting some of the undefeated AP Top 25 newcomers land ahead of the Cougars. Otherwise, no major changes in BYU’s poll position.   19. Wake Forest (22): A move up is justified for Wake Forest after it followed a double-overtime loss to Clemson with a 31-21 win at Florida State. The Demon Deacons are clearly one of the best teams in the ACC, and as long as they can remain a one-loss team, they will climb in the rankings.  20. Washington (15): The value of Washington’s win against Michigan State lessened following the Spartans’ 0-2 start to Big Ten play, but losing by just eight on the road to another undefeated team isn’t likely to be enough to bounce the Huskies all the way out of the top 25.  21. Kansas State (25): A late push by Texas Tech brought some uncertainty but Kansas State avoided a letdown loss and improved to 4-1 with a 37-28 win against the Red Raiders.   22. Syracuse (NR): The Orange were ranked No. 25 in the Coaches Poll last week while receiving far less support from the AP Top 25 voters. Beating Wagner won’t move the needle as much as maintaining that zero in the loss column, which should spark a boost into the top 25.  23. Mississippi State (NR): The Bulldogs may have the same record (4-1) as the LSU team that beat ...

Tim Cook On Why Apple Avoids The Term ‘metaverse,’ Unlike Facebook – Business Insider https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/tim-cook-on-why-apple-avoids-the-term-metaverse-unlike-facebook-business-insider/ Apple CEO Tim Cook discussed AR, VR, and more in a new interview with Dutch media outlet Bright. He said Apple avoids using the term “metaverse” because the average person doesn’t know what it is.  The tech giant’s approach is a stark contrast to Mark Zuckerberg’s obsession with the metaverse.  Loading Something is loading. Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed in an exclusive interview with Dutch media outlet Bright that the tech giant’s hesitancy toward joining the metaverse hype is intentional. “I always think it’s important that people understand what something is. And I’m really not sure the average person can tell you what the metaverse is,” Cook told the outlet.  The metaverse is a term derived from science-fiction and refers to a hypothetical version of a three-dimensional internet accessed via immersive technologies rather than 2D screens. The word “metaverse” was only mentioned once on Apple earnings calls so far this year, compared to 36 mentions on Meta earnings calls. Despite the buzz word’s explosive usage across the industry, executives are divided on whether the metaverse represents a real product — like virtual reality — or if it’s just a concept for a virtual world that may never actually exist. However, Mark Zuckerberg told staff in July that Meta is in “deep, philosophical competition” with Apple to build the metaverse. Following Facebook’s name change and announcement last fall that it would invest $10 billion into building the so-called metaverse, the iPhone maker stood out from the wider tech industry in its apparent refusal to join Mark Zuckerberg’s latest obsession.  Instead, Apple has focused its emerging tech investment specifically on Augmented Reality.  When an analyst asked Cook this January about Apple’s role in the metaverse space, he responded that Apple is “always exploring new and emerging technologies” and pointed to the company’s 14,000 AR kit apps in the App Store.  “I think AR is a profound technology that will affect everything,” Cook told Bright in the interview published Friday, adding that virtual reality is not a way to “live your whole life.” “It’s something you can really immerse yourself in. And that can be used in a good way,” he said. “VR is for regular periods, but not a way to communicate well. So I’m not against it, but that’s how I look at it.”

California Fraud Cases Highlight The Need For A Regulatory Crackdown On Crypto Cointelegraph
California Fraud Cases Highlight The Need For A Regulatory Crackdown On Crypto Cointelegraph
California Fraud Cases Highlight The Need For A Regulatory Crackdown On Crypto – Cointelegraph https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/california-fraud-cases-highlight-the-need-for-a-regulatory-crackdown-on-crypto-cointelegraph/ The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) announced last month that it had issued desist and refrain orders to 11 entities for violating California securities laws. Some of the highlights included allegations that they offered unqualified securities as well as material misrepresentations and omissions to investors. These violations should remind us that while crypto is a unique and exciting industry for the public at large, it is still an area that is rife with the potential for bad players and fraud. To date, government crypto regulation has been minimal at best, with a distinct lack of action. Whether you are a full-time professional investor or just a casual fan who wants to be involved, you need to be absolutely sure of what you are getting into before getting involved in any crypto opportunity. California has toyed with setting up a crypto-specific business registration process for those looking to do business in the state. The proposed framework was vetoed by Governor Gavin Newsom as the resources required to establish and enforce such a framework would be prohibitive for the state. While this type of compliance infrastructure has not been employed yet, it points to concerns that regulatory authorities have related to the crypto industry. There appears to be a pattern that new industries, especially those that garner as much international attention as crypto, are especially susceptible to fraud. One must go only as far back as cannabis legalization to find the last time California had to deal with fraudulent schemes at this scale. Related: The feds are coming for the metaverse — from Axie Infinity to Bored Apes It appears inevitable that California, known to be a first mover in regulation and compliance, will create some form of crypto-specific compliance infrastructure in the name of consumer protection. If history is any indication, once California releases its framework, other states will follow. Federal and state representatives have been attempting to draft legislation to establish financial standards for crypto with little luck to date. At the federal level, Senators Cory Booker, John Thune, Debbie Stabenow and John Boozman co-sponsored a bill to empower the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to serve as the regulatory body for crypto, while Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Cynthia Lummis co-sponsored a bill to establish more clear guidance on digital assets and virtual currencies. Lawmakers have even reached out to tech luminaries such as Mark Zuckerberg to weigh in on crypto fraud. Source: Chainalysis None of these or other similarly crypto-focused bills are expected to pass in 2022, but this level of bipartisan cooperation has been unprecedented in recent times. The collaboration should reflect just the sheer magnitude of the need for a regulatory framework. Said another way, Democrats and Republicans speaking to one another about anything should stop the presses, but the fact that they are co-sponsoring multiple bills should tell us that there is a monumental requirement for guidance. How should one approach investing in the crypto space if the government is not going to establish controls for crypto? There are a few general points that one should consider if they are presented with a crypto investment opportunity. Related: GameFi developers could be facing big fines and hard time When reviewing any opportunity, do your due diligence! Do not take anyone’s word without some level of substantive support. If crypto is not an area of expertise, reach out to professionals who do have qualified experience. Make sure to utilize crypto monitoring and blockchain analysis tools, if possible, as part of the vetting process. A common strategy of fraudsters is putting undue pressure or artificial timelines on a potential close. Slow down the process and use any and all time necessary to make an investment decision. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. As overplayed as the cliché may be, it does bring up a valid point. There have been instances of schemes offering to pay initial and ongoing dividends for any new investors that are brought in and for additional dividends to be paid from any investors that those new investors bring in. If this sounds like a pyramid or multi-level marketing scheme, that’s because it is. Terms like “No Risk Investment” get thrown around as well. Ultimately, if no one knows where the opportunity is coming from, beware. While crypto can be a fun and electrifying topic with many legitimate opportunities, there are bad players who will take advantage of the lack of government oversight and the excitement of overenthusiastic or undereducated investors. Zach Gordon is a certified public accountant (CPA) and vice president of crypto accounting for Propeller Industries, serving as fractional chief financial officer and adviser to a portfolio of crypto and Web3 clients. He has been named a Forty Under 40 CPA, sits on the Digital Assets Committee for the NYSSCPA and has been working with crypto clients in a variety of capacities since 2016. As Australia calls end to COVID emergency response, doctors warn of risk to public Australia will end the mandatory five-day home quarantine for COVID-infected people on Oct. 14, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Friday, even as some doctors warned the move would put the public at risk. The decision to let COVID-infected Australians decide whether they need to isolate or not removes one of the country’s last remaining restrictions from the pandemic era, and comes about a month after the quarantine period was cut to five days from seven. Analysis-Eisai’s trial success raises hope for Alzheimer’s prevention Clear evidence this week that Eisai and Biogen’s drug lecanemab slows cognitive decline in early-stage dementia has galvanized efforts among Alzheimer’s researchers toward a tantalizing goal – preventing dementia even before symptoms start. Lecanemab is an antibody that targets and removes toxic clumps of a protein called amyloid beta that accumulates in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s. Results from the companies’ 1,800-patient trial released on Tuesday showed convincingly that doing so also slows the advance of the mind-robbing disease. Chinese artist records era of COVID, one test at a time For most of China’s 1.4 billion people, regular COVID-19 tests have become a way of life. Siyuan Zhuji is trying to turn them into a work of art. Since March, the 33-year-old multi-disciplinary artist from Jiangsu province has been filming his own nucleic acid tests with a small camera in his mouth. Cholera outbreaks surging worldwide, fatality rates rising – WHO Cholera cases have surged this year, especially in places of poverty and conflict, with outbreaks reported in 26 countries and fatality rates rising sharply, a World Health Organization official said on Friday. In a typical year, fewer than 20 countries report outbreaks of the disease which is spread by the ingestion of contaminated food or water and can cause acute diarrhea. (With inputs from agencies.)

College Football Scores, Schedule, NCAA Top 25 Rankings, Games Today: USC, Oregon In Action – CBS Sports https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/college-football-scores-schedule-ncaa-top-25-rankings-games-today-usc-oregon-in-action-cbs-sports/ See New Posts Pinned Oregon dominating Half: Oregon 31, Stanford 3 The Ducks have the Cardinal more than tripled in total yards, 324-102, and are in total command. Oregon is averaging 11.8 yards per rush as Bucky Irving is at 90 yards on just eight carries. Bo Nix also has 62 yards on the ground for Oregon to go with 111 yards passing. Pinned Paging USC’s defense Start 3Q: USC 21, Arizona State 17 Hello, USC’s defense. Are you present tonight? The halftime clock was the only thing that kept the Sun Devils from scoring in the first half. Emory Jones looked like the best version of himself, despite the fact that he’s got a gimpy hamstring. Trojans may be able to score at will, but if they’re going to cover that 26.5 point spread, they’ll need some stops. Pinned Pac-12 update Late 2Q: USC 21, Arizona State 10 USC just surged ahead 21-10, but the Sun Devils have put up a fight so far. Arizona State scored on its first two possessions, and USC has scored on its first three. Offense running the show thus far. Late 1Q: Oregon 3, Stanford 0 The Ducks Got a field goal on their first drive and have kept Stanford from doing much early. Bucky Irving already has 78 yards rushing for the Ducks. Pinned Georgia Tech gets huge win Final: GT 26, Pitt 21 The Panthers provided some late drama, scoring a quick touchdown and having a chance to win the game within the final minute, but ultimately Georgia Tech picks up its second win of the season. The Yellow Jackets broke a hapless streak, too, notching their first win over an AP ranked opponent since 2016.   In the first game after coach Geoff Collins was fired, the Yellow Jackets showed incredible resolve by going up 6-0 early. Pitt answered with a second-quarter touchdown, but the Panthers were kept out of the end zone again until the final two minutes of the game. Though Pitt did put up two touchdowns late, Georgia Tech was able to hang on.  Pinned Georgia Tech surprising No. 24 Pitt  4Q: GT 19, Pitt 7 The first game of the post-Geoff Collins era is off to a pleasantly surprising start for Georgia Tech, which leads Pitt 19-7 with only minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. A goal line stand from the Panthers prevented the Yellow Jackets from extending the lead even further, but they’ll need two quick scores in the final few minutes to make a miraculous comeback. It’s been a sloppy day for Pitt with three turnovers, two of which were fumbles. For a program that’s suffered plenty as of late, this would be a nice win for Georgia Tech as it tries to hit the reset button and move forward through the season on a positive note.  Pinned LSU comes back against Auburn Final: LSU 21, Auburn 17 LSU went down 14-0 against Auburn in the first half, but went on a shocking 21-3 run down the stretch to beat the rival Tigers. LSU quarterback Jaydon Daniels struggled mightily through the air, finishing with just 80 yards passing, but ran for 59 yards and a score to create enough offense. Robby Ashford had a great game for Auburn with 337 yards passing and two scores, but both came within the first 16 minutes of the game. The ending was absolutely crazy, as most LSU/Auburn games are. Auburn threw two interceptions down the stretch, while each team traded fumbles. Ultimately, it resulted in zero total points, which was enough for LSU to hold on.  Pinned Big man TD UTEP defensive end Jadrion Taylor had the play of his life as he converted a 100-yard scoop-and-score to ice a 41-35 win over Charlotte. The 49ers faced second-and-goal from the 2-yard line, but the running back lost the ball falling into the end zone and was picked up by the 246-pound Taylor and returned the full length of the field. It ended up being a major play as the Miners beat Charlotte on the road and moved to 3-3 and 1-1 in Conference USA play.  Pinned Missouri ball The Tigers get the football to start the third quarter. Will be interesting to see what approach Eli Drinkwitz takes. Aside from a 63-yard run from Cody Schrader, the ground game hasn’t been particularly effective. Gotta think Georgia is going to blitz like crazy after a rather vanilla defensive approach in the first half. Can some of these Mizzou WRs become stars tonight? Dominic Lovett already has is catches, and five-star true freshman Luther Burden has a chance to shine under the national spotlight. Pinned Halftime notes Half: Missouri 16, Georgia 6 Stetson Bennett is just 10 of 24 passing, and the Bulldogs are averaging just three yards per rush. Essentially all of that rushing came on a single run from Kendall Milton that ended in a fumble. Just a stunning ball as the Tigers could become the first unranked team to beat a No. 1 ranked UGA squad since 1942.  Pinned Georgia on the board  Late 2Q: Missouri 13, Georgia 3 Georgia caps a 52-yard drive with a 40-yard field goal from Podlesny to get on the board. Stetson Bennett is just 5 of 14 for 90 yards, and the Bulldogs still have only four first downs. Their average yards per play is just 4.9, and Kendall Milton has run for -1 yards on the two attempts aside from the 35-yarder on which he fumbled in the first quarter. Pinned Clemson gets a FG Late 2Q: Clemson 6, NC State 3 Clemson’s once-promising drive stalls and results in a 46-yard field goal from B.T. Potter that puts the Tigers ahead. It’s been a defensive slog thus far, marked by long drives ending in field goals, so any points are to be appreciated here. Wolfpack have run just 17 plays with 5:47 remaining in the first half. Pinned Georgia in trouble Mid 2Q: Missouri 13, Georgia 0 After two fumbles and three punts, Georgia is in deep trouble at Missouri. The Tigers came to play on the defensive side, and Brady Cook is dealing. Mizzou has negative yardage in the run game, bu the top-ranked Bulldogs haven’t done much on the ground either. You would think Georgia will cut out the sloppy turnovers and get it figured out, but it does not look like the No. 1 team in the country thus far. Pinned Longhorns! Texas 14, West Virginia 0 Texas is bouncing back nicely so far following its heartbreaking loss at Texas Tech last week. It’s an early two-possession lead for the Longhorns after this Ja’Tavion Sanders TD grab from *checks notes* Xavier Worthy. Quinn Ewers won’t be back until next week, but Steve Sarkisian is getting creative in the meantime.  Pinned Georgia sluggish End 1Q: Missouri 3, Georgia 0 Georgia entered as 28-point favorites at Missouri, but the Bulldogs are looking sluggish so far. Three punts and a fumble on four possessions as Mizzou takes a lead into the second quarter. Stetson Bennett is just 1 for 4, and the only explosive play Georgia had in the quarter — a 35-yard run from Kendall Milton — resulted in a fumble. Seems the ‘Dawgs are playing about like they did in an uninspiring win over Kent State last week. Pinned Surprising start Early 2Q: Auburn 14, LSU 0 The Auburn offense has found life with Robby Ashford at quarterback. He’s 5 of 10 for 162 yards and two touchdowns early as Auburn leads against LSU. Jordan-Hare seems lit for this one, despite all the turmoil surrounding Bryan Harsin. We’ll see if they can sustain it, but his has been impressive so far from an Auburn team that entered as 8-point underdogs. Pinned Mississippi State crushes Texas A&M Final: Mississippi State 42, Texas A&M 24 Mississippi State took Texas A&M to the woodshed in a game that will almost certainly push the Bulldogs into the rankings, and the Aggies out. Quarterback Will Rogers threw for 329 yards and 3 touchdowns in another huge effort, with Rara Thomas exploding for 134 yards. The Aggies were miserable offensively again with zero first-half points. Receiver Moose Muhammad found some consistency in the second half, but it was primarily in garbage time. Mississippi State’s 4-1 start to the season is the best since Dak Prescott led the Bulldogs to the No. 1 overall ranking in 2014.  Pinned Alabama pulls away in the fourth Final: No. 2 Alabama 49, No. 20 Arkansas 26 The Razorbacks had a chance heading into the fourth quarter down five, but the Crimson Tide got 72-yard and 76-yard touchdown runs from star running back Jahmyr Gibbs, along with a 3-yard plunge from Jase McClellan to pull away. While they did get the win and cover on the road, starting quarterback Bryce Young suffered an injured shoulder late in the second quarter. Jalen Milroe came in and threw for 65 yards, tossed one touchdown, rushed for 91 yards and scored one touchdown on the ground. It’ll be interesting to what happens at the quarterback position this week heading into the matchup vs. Texas A&M. Pinned Deacs rebound Final: Wake Forest 31, Florida State 21 Wake Forest rebounds from the agony of last week’s loss to Clemson by knocking off previously unbeaten Florida State 31-21. There was more defense in this game than you’d expect from these teams. A couple of missed field goals hampered FSU’s momentum. Justice Ellison led the way for Wake Forest with 114 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Pinned Kansas shocks Iowa State Final: Kansas 14, Iowa State 11 Kansas football used a strong defensive effort to shock the Cyclones and move to 5-0 for the first time since 2009. Star quarterback Jalon Daniels was held to just 102 total yards in his fifth game, but the defense came up in a huge way. The Cyclones mustered just 26 yards rushing on 30 carries. Iowa State’s kicker went just 1 of 4 on kicks down the stretch.  “Dang it feels good to be lucky sometimes,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said on the broadcast. Pinned Penn State survives Final: Penn State 17, Northwestern 7 It wasn’t pretty, nor was the weather. But Penn State stays unbeaten behind a great defensive effort against Northweste...

A&M-San Antonio Reinstated As Polling Site For Upcoming Election | Texas A&M University-San Antonio | TAMUSA – The Mesquite https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/am-san-antonio-reinstated-as-polling-site-for-upcoming-election-texas-am-university-san-antonio-tamusa-the-mesquite/ Dylan Villalon, Student Government Association election commissioner, speaks on behalf of Texas A&M University-San Antonio at the Commissioners Court meeting on Sept. 6, 2022. Villalon addressed the court about reinstating the university as a designated polling location for the upcoming midterm elections. Photo by Amber Esparza With midterm elections less than two months away, voters will be able to cast their ballots at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, which almost lost its designation as a polling location.  The university will host early voting Oct. 24- Nov. 4 and Election Day voting on Nov. 8 in the Mays Center, Suite 111 of the Science and Technology Building.  Earlier this month, Bexar County commissioners reinstated 46 early voting poll sites that were in danger of being removed because most Bexar County voters opted to vote primarily at 259 sites since they have been able to vote anywhere, not just in their precincts, since 2019.  Commissioners approved the locations after hearing from dozens of community members and college students. Dylan Villalon, election commissioner for the Student Government Association, spoke on behalf of A&M-San Antonio during the Sept. 6 Bexar County Commissioners Court meeting to express concerns of the university not being a designated polling site.  “I’m here today to express my alarm … with the exclusion of Texas A&M University-San Antonio as an early polling site and … Election Day polling location for the November election,” Villalon said. “Many students and surrounding residents will now struggle to do the most basic of civic duties.”  Villalon emphasized the importance of reinstating A&M-San Antonio as a polling site while asking Commissioner Rebeca Clay-Flores, who represents West and Southside of San Antonio in Precinct 1, to support the SGA’s request for reinstatement.   Video by Irma Saenz. “This election coming up is the most important election that Texas has had in the past two decades,” Villalon said. “It’s going to dictate the next 20-30 years of politics for students here in San Antonio. “Commissioner Flores, you should have received a letter of support from the office of the president at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, as well as the student government (association.) “So, in solidarity with those offices, I would like to ask you to please reinstate Texas A&M San Antonio, Our Lady of Lake University and San Antonio College’s polling locations,” Villalon said.  During the meeting, Clay-Flores expressed her disagreement with closing polling sites in Bexar County while requesting the reinstatement of A&M-San Antonio as a voting location.  “I have never been in support of closing any sites,” Clay-Flores said. “We want to make sure that we empower people to vote and to have access to sites.  “I know last time I talked about the lack of sites in … Precinct 1. I also would like to add, even though Palo Alto is nearby, to request to add Texas A&M (San Antonio) as a (polling) site.” During the Sept. 6 meeting, Jacquelyn Callanen, Bexar County Elections administrator, discussed her reasoning for lowering the number of polling sites from 300 to 258 for the upcoming election cycle. Callanen said Bexar County began using vote centers — which allow voters briefly explain what vote centers allow voters to do that they couldn’t do before — in 2019. The change allowed the county to keep only 65% of its poll sites open, Callanen said.  “We chose not to do that,” Callanen said. “We kept all of the sites open for the first two elections (November 2019, March 2020) and the voters showed us … where they wanted to go.” After the 2020 presidential election, Callanen said the Bexar County Elections Department followed the methodology.  Callanen said the numbers that they reported after the 2020 election led them to drop down to 259 polling sites, which is higher than the minimum number of polling sites of 152. She said she believes that instead of “cutting sites,” Bexar County is sitting at 106 more than some other counties. Bexar County Judge and Commissioners Court during their meeting on Sept. 6, 2022. From left to right: Commissioners Rebeca Clay-Flores and Justin Rodriguez; Judge Nelson W. Wolff; Commissioners Marialyn Barnard and Tommy Calvert. Photo by Amber Esparza “The law says, after you have completed a successful year under vote centers, you are now allowed to drop down to 50% of your poll sites,” she said. “We would never do that. Callanen was met with criticism by Precinct 4 Commissioner Tommy Calvert over the lack of polling sites and how it would affect voter participation.  “The crux of the matter is that for every 0.25 miles that someone has to travel additionally to a voting location, it is a 5% decrease in voter turnout,” Calvert said.  Callanen expressed her confusion with the numbers Calvert provided but was informed where the numbers came from soon after.   “Those numbers came from the lawsuit you were sued over … and got this county sued over,” Calvert said. “It’s in black and white, and I’ve provided every member of the court a copy of the judge’s order.”   Following Calvert, Precinct 2 Commissioner Justin Rodriguez also expressed concern about the closing of polling sites.  Rodriguez explained the law that Callanen is referring to is a “permissive law” not a “prescriptive law,” which means that it’s not a requirement to reduce polling sites. A motion was presented by Rodriguez, which was seconded by Clay-Flores, to add five early voting locations, it included the following: A&M-San Antonio, Our Lady of the Lake University, St. Mary’s University, Frank Garrett Community Center and St. Paul Community Center.  The motion was approved through a 4-1 vote. Precinct 3 Commissioner Marialyn Barnard voted against the motion. About the Author Raul Trey Lopez Assistant Editor Raul Trey Lopez is a communication junior at Texas A&M University-San Antonio. Joel Embiid Has Obtained American Citizenship! – US Sports – US Sports – https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/joel-embiid-has-obtained-american-citizenship-us-sports-us-sports/ This is news that must not have pleased Vincent Collet! While Joel Embiid obtained French nationality two months ago, and could therefore play in the blue jersey at the 2023 World Cup or the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, which has caused many debates in French basketball, here that we learn that the pivot born in Cameroon 28 years ago also obtained American nationality! The 76ers center confirmed to The Associated Press on Thursday that he was sworn in as a US citizen in Philadelphia two weeks ago.  » I have been here a long time. My son (Arthur, born in September 2020, editor’s note) is American. I live here and it’s a blessing to be an American. So I said, why not? “said the man with three passports. Born in Yaoundé in 1994, Joel Embiid arrived in the United States, more precisely in Florida, at 16, before joining the University of Kansas in 2012, then being drafted in first position by the 76ers two years later. . Embiid is a fan of French culture From the point of view of his history with the country, his American naturalization therefore seems more logical than his French naturalization. In January 2018, Joel Embiid had however confided in the columns of L’Equipe to have come to France when he was a child and to love French culture: “I have a lot of family in France. Uncles, aunts… I went there when I was little to spend two months on vacation. I haven’t had the opportunity to go back since I’ve been in the NBA, but as long as I’m healthy and during the summer I have nothing to do here in Philadelphia, I would like to travel. I love French food, Roland-Garros! I want to see the Tour de France. I really want to attend it in the race director’s car, for a mountain event. “It now remains to wait for his answer to the big question: for which selection does he want to play? « It’s still too early to think about the Olympics or other international tournaments. I just want to be healthy and win a ring, » he told The Associated Press. Reinforce the French team to face the United States eye to eye in Paris 2024, or reinforce a Team USA already quite dominant when it is complete? It’s up to him to choose…

Growing Old And Loving It The News International
Growing Old And Loving It The News International
Growing Old And Loving It – The News International https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/growing-old-and-loving-it-the-news-international/ “It’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then” — Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland September is World Alzheimer’s month and September 21 is observed each year as World Alzheimer’s Day, named after German psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer who identified and reported the first case of the illness now named after him: Alzheimer’s disease (sometimes also called Alzheimer’s Dementia to differentiate it from other kinds of dementia which may result from other brain illnesses). A few years ago, an old friend from school called and asked to come see me to discuss his elderly mother. He described how both his elderly parents were struggling with memory as well as general health issues. His mother though, was in a more advanced state of memory decay than his father, who was older. Her short-term memory had almost completely disappeared resulting in problems like daily arguments when she accused her children of not feeding her since she kept forgetting that she had eaten. On a few occasions, she had stepped outside their house and gotten lost, needing the neighbours to bring her back home. The most recent crisis had been precipitated after his father was hospitalised for a chest infection and she had become frantic at home in his absence. He recovered and was now back home but it was hard for him to rest. She kept wanting him to get out of bed and check if “the children were okay”. She couldn’t sleep at night and kept him awake with her. She also wanted to feed him even though his appetite was poor after his recent illness and would start fighting with him when he declined food. My friend and his family were at their wits’ end. The most painful thing, he said, was seeing his mother (and father) in such a dependent state. Dementia is a generic term encompassing various illnesses, whose core feature is gradual loss of short term (recent) memory. Alzheimer’s disease makes up the vast bulk of cases of dementia accounting for about 70 percent of cases. The rest comprise brain or bodily illnesses: sequelae of strokes, Parkinson’s disease and other neurological illnesses, prolonged substance abuse (alcohol is the drug of abuse usually responsible) etc. It is usually a disease of old age although a very small percentage of cases (transmitted genetically within close family members) can happen in young people, sometimes as young as 30s or 40s. Pakistan has one of the youngest populations in the world, thanks to our high fertility rate with over 40 percent of our people below the age of 15 and only a little over 3.5 percent over 65 years of age. This is good news in the short term. All these young people, if properly educated and trained, can be a huge resource for our society in the decades to come. Unlike the vast majority of Western societies (Japan being an extreme example), our population is not ‘graying’ (getting older) and thus, can be expected to continue working and contributing to the economy. However, Pakistan cannot escape the inevitable demographic shifts over the coming decades as our birth rate begins to decline and the population starts ageing. As women enter the workforce in increasing numbers, birth rates are already beginning to drop (as has happened all over the world). Current estimates put the number of patients diagnosed with dementia in Pakistan at around 1 million. This is likely a huge underestimate since, despite the efforts of organisations like Alzheimer’s Pakistan (an affiliate of Alzheimer’s International), awareness about this very common illness remains poor. Population estimates worldwide indicate that, given current trends, the number of patients with dementia in the world will double every 20 years with the bulk of this increase coming in low- and middle-income countries like Pakistan. As a practising psychiatrist, this is evident to me: my immediate family has five elders (over 75) with some having early symptoms of dementia. My wife’s family has about the same number. In my clinic, about 1 in five patients or families is struggling with the illness of dementia. Our changing socio-demographic trends do not bode well for the future. Dementia patients need ongoing supervision and care as the illness is progressive and the decline is inexorable, although gradual. As women leave the home to enter the workforce, we stand on the precipice of a crisis which no one really appreciates. No resources have been allocated at the government level to develop facilities and services to replace the free home-based care that women have been providing for centuries. There are now large numbers of elders living alone in our cities (and, no doubt villages) whose children live and work abroad and have no intention of returning. As someone on the threshold of old age, I have a very personal stake in this fight. So, is there something that people over the age of 50 (like me) can do to delay or prevent the onset of dementia? Since dementia is basically a reflection of the ageing of the brain, the lifestyle and health strategies that are recommended to delay other aspects of ageing apply to dementia as well: Maintain a “healthy lifestyle”. Manage your diet, don’t smoke or drink (to excess), make sure you get adequate amounts of sleep at night (6-8 hours is the average required) and treat any preexisting illnesses (diabetes, high blood pressure etc). Practice good “sleep hygiene” (Google it) since sleep quality also deteriorates with age. If you are over 50, get a regular medical checkup at least once a year even if you are symptom free. Exercise regularly not just for brain health but also for preventing other illnesses. There is some evidence that higher levels of education and continued intellectual pursuits in old age help delay progression of dementia. Actively exercise your brain (avoid “passive brain stimulation” like television and social media). Playing chess, reading and regular social interaction help keep the brain active. While there are practical advantages to rearranging society for the care of the elderly, there is a better reason for not discarding them. They are an enduring source of wisdom and knowledge that can never be gained from “leadership” and “management” seminars since there is no substitute for real life experience. In addition to the compassionate aspect of caring for those who spent their lives caring for us, in actuality, they can teach us a lot about the world as it is today. Continued social and occupational engagement is known to prevent and delay the onset and progression of dementia. As for me, I find hope in a quote from the Roman philosopher Seneca: “Let us cherish and love old age; for it is full of pleasure, if one knows how to use it”. Hubbard’s Caffey Improving Each Day With Buckeyes | News, Sports, Jobs – Warren Tribune Chronicle https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/hubbards-caffey-improving-each-day-with-buckeyes-news-sports-jobs-warren-tribune-chronicle/ Ohio State’s T.C. Caffey plays against Toledo during an NCAA college football game Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022, in Columbus, Ohio. (AP Photo/Jay LaPrete) COLUMBUS — In a blowout 77-21 victory over Toledo, Ohio State head coach Ryan Day began emptying his bench. The Buckeyes had already cycled through running backs TreVeyon Henderson, Miyan Williams and Dallan Hayden, but with just under nine minutes remaining in the game, out trotted walk-on true freshman and Hubbard native T.C. Caffey. Hayden said Caffey was nervous before the drive, but he told him “to run through something.” His first two carries in his collegiate career were a 1-yard gain and a 5-yard loss, respectively, but his third carry — a 49-yard touchdown run — was something Day said “nobody expected,” but it fulfilled Caffey’s lifelong dream. “It was really just keeping my feet going. Mainly, the thing that coach Alford preaches on is like, ‘Keep running until you’re down, and don’t ever stop your feet,’” Caffey said. “Once I got out of the pile, I just tried my best to make people miss. And then, after I got in the end zone, it was just unreal to me because that was one of my biggest dreams growing up.” Caffey’s moment in the spotlight against the Rockets didn’t come without hard work, though. Entering his senior season at Hubbard High School, Caffey’s only offer was from Youngstown State. During the summer of 2021, Caffey began going to camps that Buckeyes running backs coach Tony Alford was at, which led to some serious looks from Ohio State. Caffey said his goal between his junior and senior seasons was to improve his ability to cut and break off big runs, and the big runs started to come. His senior season was one for the ages, rushing for 2,638 yards and 37 touchdowns, which notched him Trumbull County Player of the Year and Division III All-Ohio First Team honors. Alford said the main thing he looks for when recruiting a player is if he’s a “tough guy,” and Caffey’s 5-foot-10, 218-pound frame showed enough toughness for him to get offered a preferred walk-on spot after an Ohio State home game in 2021. “I remember standing outside the locker room with him and his mother, and I remember saying to him, ‘I want you here,’” Alford said. “‘I’m not offering you a scholarship. I don’t have one, but I do want you here. I do want you in our room, I think you’d be a great fit for what we’re trying to do as a program.’” Caffey put the lid on his 4,659-yard, 57-touchdown high school career and joined the Buckeyes in June, achieving a goal he set for himself when he was 10 years old. When he initially arrived on campus, Caffey said he struggled balancing time between being at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, in the classroom and for himself to relax. In addition to making a daily schedule, he leaned on his teammates and coaches to help him adjust to life as a college football player. “I would say mainly the coaches like coach Alford, coach Reilly (Jeffers) and then some of the other running backs like Miyan and TreVeyon,” Caffey said. “Even Dallan. Me and him talk a lot about the plays and different things we need to do.” The Buckeyes running backs coach of seven years said he was initially impressed with how well Caffey could “retain information,” asking questions in walkthroughs and always wanting to learn more about the position. However, Alford said Caffey has gone through the same learning curve all freshmen go through with learning the playbook and how to pass block — something that wasn’t asked of him as a dominant high school feature back. Alford’s message to Caffey has been to “play faster.” “When you’re apprehensive as to what you need to do, you don’t play very fast. You’re walking on eggshells,” Alford said. “We finally had to get to him, ‘Hey, I don’t care if you make mistakes, just go play. Play really, really fast, and if you make a mistake, we’ll fix it.’” Caffey has made waves in preseason camp, impressing Alford during the Buckeyes’ inside run period at practice and losing his Black Stripe Sept. 14 — signifying he earned his spot on the Ohio State football team. “That’s like a rite of passage for everybody and once you get that off, you’re accepted into the team,” Caffey said. “Hard work that I’ve been putting in has really helped me get to that point, and it’s a big achievement for me.” Just three days later he rumbled for the 49-yard score against Toledo and the sidelines “went nuts for the kid.” Williams said he was “very excited” for him. “I was just proud of him, you know. I feel like everybody else was, too,” Williams said Sept. 21. “He runs hard in practice too, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see it in the game.” Caffey said “determination and what I need to do” has gotten him to the point he is at in his collegiate career, thanking the Youngstown area for the support in his journey because “it helps my thinking process” knowing he has “people back home” who support him. Alford is proud of the growth Caffey has shown, calling the true freshman a “damn good football player,” while realizing he still has more to show. “He’s a great kid, but I mean, he’s just a young kid,” Alford said. “I’m proud of him. I’m sure his mom and dad are exceptionally proud of him. I talk to them all the time. And this guy, he’s got a great future ahead of him.” Today’s breaking news and more in your inbox

Source Digital To Introduce Seamless Video/Metaverse Experience In Europe – PR Newswire https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/source-digital-to-introduce-seamless-video-metaverse-experience-in-europe-pr-newswire/ A recently-awarded European patent further solidifies Source as a Web3 Network of Networks. Deploying interactive content within coordinates values across any video and metaverse network. , /PRNewswire/ — Source Digital, Inc. announces the awarding of a European patent that further cements the company’s dominance in interactive video as well as in monetizable aspects of the metaverse. The patent not only covers functionality for activating visual content in video, but at any coordinate in any metaverse Source can enable interactivity for end users, empowering a more personalized, seamless video-metaverse (cross-verse) experience. Source Digital Source Digital already has the technology and IP that is agnostic to audio, video or metaverse – to facilitate personalized SAM’s (Source Activated Moments) designed for user engagement and interactivity around information, socialization, shopping, contextually targeted brands, advertising, and virtually any other extension of interactivity against moments in time. This patent further extends the company’s capability to deploy SAM’s directly correlated to any on-screen visual location in video (2D), metaverse (3D), or augmented reality (3D). Each SAM “coordinate” effectively creates a mapping system allowing end users to touch/click any digital location/object and get an interactive return of information – even buy or share it! Users can also re-experience or cross-link the precise metaverse moment when they originally found it. (Imagine clicking on a shirt and immediately accessing information about the brand, adding it to your cart, and buying or sharing it with a friend; then, jumping right back to the original moment when the item was found.) This patent also provides the ability to match the physical location of an end user (on earth) or digital object (in the metaverse) and identify its real-world coordinates. In all cases, these intersections can trigger additional digital interactive events (similar to the description above). As a bonus feature, the patent also extends the synchronization of metaverse experiences to traditional video. Users can watch a favorite movie and synchronize an in-world experience from that movie. They can also watch a favorite live concert, jumping back and forth from a lean-back physical world to a lean-in immersive virtual world. “We’re thrilled to expand our reach into European markets, with a greater capacity to optimize the user experience for creators, merchants, and advertisers,” shares Source Digital, Inc. Co-Founder/Chief Executive Officer Hank Frecon. “This opportunity enables us to join our advanced technology with the most cutting-edge online capabilities, bringing the metaverse and video alive like never before.” With 9 US patents already secured, Source Digital has established itself as the foremost innovator in the next generation of advertising and e-commerce. In 2022 alone, the visionary tech company pioneered groundbreaking partnerships with both the National Hockey League and key tourism departments across the nation. Implementing its next-generation ad tech solutions, consumers discovered an entirely customized viewer or visitor experience while brands found new ways to expand their audience. The July announcement of Source Digital’s partnership with Metaverse Investments Ltd. further solidified the company’s leadership in the rapidly expanding Web3 industry. Now, the awarding of an 11th patent allows this forward-thinking tech team to provide an even more personalized experience to the European market. Source Digital’s advanced technology systems will be able to sync a SAM to a piece of content/object within the metaverse at a specific moment in time, enabling the company to identify and synchronize all data points. This way, users can ascertain their location within both the metaverse and video. While Source Digital is pursuing similar patents in the US and elsewhere, this initial European grant will allow for further development of future iterations. Learn more at SourceDigital.net. Taiwan Bank To Buy American Continental, Eyes Further U.S. Expansion Amid Military Tension With Beijing – Forbes https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/taiwan-bank-to-buy-american-continental-eyes-further-u-s-expansion-amid-military-tension-with-beijing-forbes/ © 2022 Bloomberg Finance LP Taichung Commercial Bank of Taiwan said on Friday it had agreed to buy California-based American Continental Bank for approximately $82 million as part of an effort to expand into the U.S. market. American Continental Bank mainly serves Chinese-American communities in the City of Industry and surrounding communities in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. It has branches in City of Industry, Alhambra, Chino Hills and Arcadia in California, as well as in Bellevue, Washington. The bank also has loan production offices Fremont, California, and Carrollton, Texas. “We are excited to be entering the Los Angeles, Washington, and Texas markets and intend to open new branches in the United States,” President David Jia said in a statement. Taichung Commercial Bank’s move comes amid heightened military tension between mainland China and Taiwan this year. Taiwan is home to many of the world’s largest technology companies, and Washington has encouraged Taiwan’s chip industry to invest in the U.S.; among them, GlobalWafers, a maker of semiconductor wafers, this year announced plans to build a $5 billion facility in Texas, and MediaTek, which competes with Qualcomm, will open a design center at Purdue University. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, one of the world’s largest chip makers, is already building a facility in Arizona. The U.S. currently has more than 70 Asian American or Pacific Islander American owned banks, according to Investopedia. East West Bank leads the way; Taiwan-based CTCB Bank is among the group. Far East National, then backed by Taiwan’s Bank SinoPac, was acquired by L.A.-based Cathay General in 2017. Taiwan has the world’s 22nd largest economy. Taiwan businesses that rank on the Forbes Global 2000 list of the world’s top publicly traded companies include Hon Hai Precision — the big supplier to Apple led by billionaire Terry Gou, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, or TSMC, which makes computer chips for Intel. Others among Taiwan’s numerous Apple suppliers include Pegatron, Lite-On Technology, Inventec, Catcher Technology, Largan Precision and Compeq Manufacturing. Why Isometric Graphics Are Crucial For Video Games CBR Comic Book Resources
Why Isometric Graphics Are Crucial For Video Games – CBR – Comic Book Resources https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/why-isometric-graphics-are-crucial-for-video-games-cbr-comic-book-resources/ Graphics are one of the most important pillars of a video game. From what started off as pixels on a 2D screen, video games have now evolved to include all different types of graphics, perspectives, and art. From third-person exploration adventures to first-person action shooters or 2D pixel platformers, graphics matter now more than ever. However, isometric graphics, a unique yet niche choice of graphics, has always stood out from the rest. Also called pseudo 3D or 2.5D, isometric graphics are identified by their unique perspective gained through parallel projection. In layman’s terms, isometric graphics mainly affect the view angle of a video game to produce the effect of 3D. The first video game to feature isometric graphics was Sega’s Zaxxon, an arcade shooter released in 1981 in Japan and 1982 internationally. Since then, isometric graphics have been present in titles such as League of Legends, Diablo, The Sims, and Disco Elysium. The topic of isometric graphics is a popular subject in the video game development community. This technique allows 2D elements and tiles to represent a 3D space. On top of that, computers that run an isometric game require less processing power since 2D sprites do not need to account for rendering and scaling. Additionally, isometric graphics present much higher 2D graphic fidelity at a lower entry barrier in comparison to their 3D counterparts. Technical benefits aside, the isometric perspective maintains and boosts the game’s art. For example, Hades‘ cel-shaded graphics and meticulous level design would not have been as aesthetic if it weren’t for isometric graphics. Through 2.5D, elements such as buildings and cars appear architecturally correct while textures and drawings are optimized and properly represented in space due to simple scaling and the three principal axes. Sometimes isometric graphics are the only solution for video game developers, as the main benefit of 2.5D makes sense in the game itself. Popular examples include League of Legends and Diablo. To enjoy these titles at their maximum, players must be aware of multiple elements and information that appear on the screen at the same time. Diablo fans need to view what lies ahead in the dungeon as well as anticipate the number of enemies so that they can plan accordingly. Similarly, League of Legends players must view enemies on the same screen while tracking important abilities in a team fight. Of course, isometric graphics are not perfect. They also come with disadvantages that negatively impact their appeal. The main issue comes from pre-rendered isometric graphics, which can suffer from display issues. For example, as standard display resolutions and aspect ratios continue to change as technology gets better, 2D images and sprites need to be constantly re-adjusted and re-rendered to maintain quality graphics. While the isometric perspective is not the most popular choice in the gaming industry, titles that implement this type of graphics tend to utilize the medium to its fullest potential. Through technical capabilities, video game art, and gameplay choices, isometric games excel at what they do. Whether it’s Disco Elysium‘s genius map design, Hades‘ level aesthetic, or Cult of the Lamb‘s slick visuals, isometric graphics let developers achieve their visions to the fullest.

Lee Philbrook and Loren Cole announce the route for the Stockton Springs Ambulance Service benefit 5K Saturday morning, Oct. 1. Photo by Ellen Holland The strong winds offshore from Hurricane Fiona blew through Maine last weekend and my nephew Jim Williams and I drove up to Schoodic Point. The parking lot was full and many people from both Maine and out-of-state were there to check out the waves. Rangers were positioned on the rocks, warning people to stand back from the rocky edges where the waves washed over the rocks. Yet there were people who got as close to the edges as they could and even some with young children who ignored the rangers’ instructions. This week Florida was hit by hurricane Ian in the very area where I vacation in February. Sanibel Island was attached to the mainland by a series of bridges and sand bars called the Sanibel Causeway. Prior to installation of the causeway, a ferry took people back and forth. Anne Morrow Lindbergh wrote a famous book in 1955, “Gift from the Sea,” about Sanibel and Captiva islands. I try to read it each year when I am on vacation. In August 2004, what was then the worst hurricane ever to strike Sanibel and Captiva — Hurricane Charley — literally sliced Captiva in half. On Sept. 28, Hurricane Ian surpassed Charley. Ian ravaged Sanibel and obliterated sections of the causeway, leaving the islands accessible only by boat and plane. The small vacation resort where I stay is on the quiet end of the island and I have many great memories of family, friends and beaches there. I don’t yet know its fate after the deadly once-in-500-years storm, which to date tragically has taken at least 35 lives in Lee County alone, in addition to destroying so many private homes, restaurants and hotels on the islands and on the mainland in Fort Myers and Cape Coral. My heart goes out to all those affected. Thought for the week: “To give without any reward, or any notice, has a special quality of its own.” — Anne Morrow Lindbergh. « Previous Next »
