File illustrationShow MoreShow Less I attended McKinley Elementary School in the 1950s and ’60s. Until 1961, McKinley had six grades and five teachers. That meant that grades were combined. I remember it as a small but fun school. We had recesses morning and afternoon — I guess so we could run off some energy — and lunch/recess at around noon. Just down the street, there was a new, much more modern Gonzalez Elementary. I understood it had six grades and six teachers (and was) very progressive. But although I begged to attend there, I attended McKinley. Only when we moved to Northwood Elementary was I introduced into what I thought was a huge elementary school, with enough teachers for three classes in each grade, a librarian, an occasional nurse and PE teachers. Can you tell me any more about McKinley and how there came to be two schools on one street? — Susan Porr In the prologue to “Romeo and Juliet” — trust me, this relates — Shakespeare introduces the Montague and Capulet families as “two households, both alike in dignity.” That’s what you’d think these two elementary schools were — McKinley in the 400 block of East Magnolia Avenue and Gonzales in the 500 block of the same street. Cheek by jowl, separate but equal, right? But for most of the 40 years they coexisted, they were too close for comfort — until they finally got together in their last act. Fittingly, the schools had separate beginnings. Built in 1915, the original McKinley School at South Brazos Street and Durango (now César E. Chávez) Boulevard, as mentioned in last Sunday’s column , was repurposed in 1923 as one of the city’s original junior high schools, Sidney Lanier, later a junior-senior and now a senior high school. More from Paula Allen: San Antonio’s first junior high schools broke new ground in preparing students for life When the building was remodeled, on the recommendation of Jeremiah Rhodes, superintendent of San Antonio public schools, “The manual training and household arts laboratories (were) made larger … owing to the type of community it will serve,” as reported in the San Antonio Express, Feb. 16, 1923. That area was often referred to as “the Mexican section.” McKinley School was named after President William McKinley, who visited San Antonio on May 4, 1901, a few months before his Sept. 6, 1901, assassination. A project by Bowie Elementary School students, compiling details on the namesakes of all local schools, says McKinley was recognized for his “great tact and deep sincerity … in his administration of governmental affairs,” as quoted in the San Antonio Light, May 15, 1921. His name was imported to the school you attended, which had been planned since 1922, when the “Dr. E.O. Evans” lot was bought at a cost of $22,000 — several thousand more and as much as double the cost of other lots acquired for schools at the same time. Members of the school board agreed that it was “the only practicable site in the community,” as reported in the Express, Oct. 4, 1922. When new McKinley, also known as School No. 29, opened in 1924, it served grades one through four, adding fifth and sixth grades later in the decade. The school board decided to build what was first called the Rock Quarry School on property between Rural and Broad avenues near the rock quarry-turned-dump that was later restyled as the Mexican Village tourist attraction in Brackenridge Park ( discussed here Dec. 17, 2016 ). More from Paula Allen: Brackenridge Park’s Mexican Village catered to San Antonio tourists for 20 years To relieve overcrowding at Eleanor Brackenridge Elementary School, “the need (was) very pressing, (so) there should be no delay in breaking ground for the structure,” said the Light, Dec. 7. 1907. “It was pointed out that many of the children of that locality would not attend school unless there was one in their neighborhood.” The price of this lot went unreported, but the most expensive in the massive tract — unloaded just before the turn of the century in a sheriff’s sale — went for a tenth of the property where McKinley was built. A two-room school was built and equipped with chairs and desks; a janitor was hired; and the new school opened in September 1907. The new school, No. 25, had two namesakes, according to the Bowie students — Rafael Gonzales, proponent of Mexican independence and former governor of Texas and Coahuila; and Jose Mario Gonzales, “a distinguished Mexican who joined the Texas Army with a number of his countrymen (and whose) addresses helped hold the people to the flag.” The differences between the two schools grew more pronounced as time passed. In 1935, the school board commissioned a survey of city schools from University of Texas professors. They found “the most serious deficiencies … in elementary school buildings,” according to their report, excerpted in the Light, July 19, 1935. “In the poorest,” they concluded, “practically nothing is provided except for the fundamental subjects. The range of difference between the best … and the poorest, such as Gonzales … is startling.” At Gonzales, the profs found a “muddy site (that) needs surfacing and walks. Outside toilets (were in) poor condition.” They suggested that “all frame structures should be removed, and brick structures remodeled and expanded.” The former Rock Quarry school was singled out as the “worst plant in the system.” The survey found no problems at McKinley and recommended that its site “would permit expansion and relieve Gonzales School.” The experts conceded that it was San Antonio’s right “to decide for itself what relative school accommodations it would provide for different races and peoples.” But professionalism went in another direction: “To the educator, however, the only recognizable difference is that of need, which is usually greatest among the underprivileged group.” More from Paula Allen: Hard times shaped Olmos Creek land’s history As the Depression decade dragged on, McKinley won first prize for having the most “five-point children” three years in a row. This was a statewide program, administered locally by the Bexar County Medical Society, that ranked schoolchildren on five qualities, some more subjective than others. A five-point child would hit satisfying metrics on each of the following — having received their diphtheria and smallpox shots, scholarship, “right attitude” and “freedom from curable physical defects.” Gonzales never placed in this contest, but McKinley was awarded a silver cup to keep in 1938 after presenting the most five-point children three years in a row. At least one of the survey recommendations was followed at Gonzales — sort of, and it was 12 years later. A dilapidated, one-room brick building dating back to the 1900s was not refurbished but abandoned in 1947 as beyond economical repair. Over the next year, a new eight-room building was constructed, and the cafeteria was remodeled. This would be the newer building you remember and the one that is still in use today. Tensions, predictably, developed between the two student populations, not so much Montagues and Capulets as pint-size Sharks and Jets. “A difficult situation has flared up between Anglo students at McKinley Elementary and a group of Latin students at Gonzales Elementary School,” says the Express, Dec. 19, 1951, in a story about a report by the city’s Slum Clearance and Urban Redevelopment Committee. To solve this problem, the committee proposed redevelopment of “a small slum area immediately east of North St. Mary’s Street on East Craig and extending to the western edge of Brackenridge Golf Course,” wiping out an existing neighborhood and rebuilding it as a “community shopping center and apartment area.” More from Paula Allen: Two-room school near Cibolo served its rural community for nearly 90 years For all their years of queasy coexistence, the two schools were examples of de facto segregation — where the policy is not codified but accomplished by strategically drawn boundaries. This didn’t go unnoticed. Philip J. Montalbo — a local attorney and member of the Good Neighbor Commission, a state agency founded to improve conditions for Mexicans living in Texas — called out the San Antonio Independent School District for operating Gonzales and McKinley as segregated schools. “Last year, all students in the Gonzales School were of Mexican descent,” he said, as quoted in the Express, Aug. 29, 1964. “At McKinley, all students were Anglo except 20 Latins.” The assistant superintendent for elementary schools, Raymond Arnold, replied that attendance was determined by zones, so that students living within a particular zone had to attend the school designated for that area — with no word on how zone boundaries were determined. ...

Latvias Centrists Are Predicted To Win National Vote 69News WFMZ-TV
Latvia’s Centrists Are Predicted To Win National Vote – 69News WFMZ-TV https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/latvias-centrists-are-predicted-to-win-national-vote-69news-wfmz-tv/ HELSINKI (AP) — Latvia held a general election Saturday amid divisions over Russia’s attack on Ukraine among the Baltic country’s sizable ethnic-Russian minority. An exit poll predicted that the center-right will win the most votes but whoever forms the next government will face huge war-induced energy concerns. A joint exit poll forecast that center-right New Unity party of Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins would win the election, capturing 22.5% of the vote. The poll was done by the Riga Stradins University, the SKDSA research center. the LETA newswire, Latvian Television and Latvian Radio. The poll also predicted that a new centrist party that favors green development — United List — would be second with 11.5% of the vote and the opposition Greens and Farmers Union would come in third with 10.9% support. Only eight parties are predicted to pass the 5% barrier and secure representation at the 100-seat Saeima legislature. A total of 19 parties had over 1,800 candidates running in the election. Official results are expected Sunday morning. Initial voter turnout was 59%, the Central Election Committee said, an increase from 54.5% in the 2018 election. Karins, who became head of Latvia’s government in January 2019, currently leads a four-party minority coalition that along with New Unity includes the center-right National Alliance, the centrist Development/For!, and the Conservatives. Karins, a 57-year-old dual Latvian-U.S. citizen born in Wilmington, Delaware, told Latvian media that it would be easiest to continue with the same coalition government if New Unity wins. He has excluded any cooperation with pro-Kremlin parties. Support for parties catering to Latvia’s ethnic-Russian minority, who make up over 25% of Latvia’s 1.9 million people, is expected to be mixed; some loyal voters have abandoned them since Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine. This election is likely to be the death knell for the opposition Harmony party, whose popularity has steadily declined. The Moscow-friendly party traditionally served as an umbrella for most of Latvia’s Russian-speaking voters, including Belarusians and Ukrainians. In the 2018 election, Harmony received almost 20% of the vote, the most of any single party, but was excluded by other parties from entering the government. However, Harmony’s immediate and staunch opposition to the Russian invasion of Ukraine caused many voters who still back Russian President Vladimir Putin to desert it. Those opposed to the war, meanwhile, tended to move toward Latvia’s mainstream parties, who condemned the invasion. A recent poll by Latvian public broadcaster LSM showed Harmony trailing in fifth place with 5.1% support. “I think the Russophonic part of the population is very fragmented,” Pauls Raudseps, a columnist at the Latvian news magazine IR, told The Associated Press. “You can’t say it’s unified on anything. Some part is pro-Putin. But what we’ve seen is that the war in general has changed attitudes. And it has happened fairly rapidly.” Long lines were reported outside polling stations in several places Saturday, including the capital, Riga. Many voters said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine affected their attitudes. “People are getting more active, and as you see, there is a queue already. So, hopefully some of the pro-Russians have switched to the more European parties now,” IT engineer Ratios Shovels, 38, said at a Riga district polling place. Elena Dadukina, a 43-year-old lawyer said, said she wasn’t sure if the healthy turnout was “due to the war or whether people want greater responsibility in choosing their candidates because of how they will influence our domestic politics.” Since Russia’s war on Ukraine started in February, Latvian officials have banned Russians from entering the country with tourist visas and dismantled a prominent Soviet monument in Riga. This week, the Latvian government announced a state of emergency at certain border areas as a precaution following Russia’s partial military mobilization. Like Baltic neighbors Estonia and Lithuania, Latvia is refusing to grant political asylum to Russian military reservists escaping conscription. Latvia, which joined the European Union and NATO in 2004, also plans to reintroduce military conscription next year after a hiatus of over 15 years. They will take on the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs at 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Marshall is the favorite here — although they were the favorites in their last matchup, too, so the odds might count for a little less. The Thundering Herd came up short against the Troy Trojans last week, falling 16-7. Despite the defeat, Marshall got a solid performance out of RB Khalan Laborn, who rushed for one TD and 113 yards on 29 carries. Meanwhile, Gardner-Webb found themselves the reluctant recipients of an unpleasant 45-14 punch to the gut against the Mercer Bears last week. Gardner-Webb was in a tough position by the half, with the score already sitting at 28-7. This next game looks promising for Marshall, who are favored by a full 31 points. They may be expected to win, but bettors beware: they are 0-2 against the spread when favored. The Thundering Herd are now 2-2 while the Runnin’ Bulldogs sit at 1-3. How Many Times Has Mad Moneys Jim Cramer Failed To Time Crypto Markets? BeInCrypto
How Many Times Has Mad Money’s Jim Cramer Failed To Time Crypto Markets? – BeInCrypto https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/how-many-times-has-mad-moneys-jim-cramer-failed-to-time-crypto-markets-beincrypto/ It’s been said that “not all investors have the same investing style.” But Jim Cramer, with his contrarian strategy, arguably made many people poor. Now he has become a meme for his consistency in making wrong calls on the direction of cryptocurrency markets. It is hard to know whether the stock market pundit believed in the calls he made regarding bitcoin over the years. Still, many of those that listened to him likely ended up on the losing side of whatever investment they made. In July, for example, Cramer warned of a possible probe into crypto exchange Coinbase by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. “Very bad news” for the firm, he said. Just one week later, Coinbase’s stock soared by up to 50%. People got angry. But it was not the first time it happened. Neither will it be the last. “Never take financial advice from Jim Cramer!” crypto podcaster, Tony Edward, shouted on Twitter at the time. Shilling Coinbase Cramer “shilled” Coinbase in the past. When the stock debuted on Nasdaq in April last year closing at $328, he stated that a fair price target for Coinbase (COIN) would be in the region of $600. “This is all a scarcity, we don’t have any other way for mutual funds to be involved with crypto,” Cramer said during a discussion on “Squawk on the Street.” He recommended to buy the stock. However, It’s been downhill ever since. Coinbase closed up 4% at $64 on Friday, and is down 80% since listing. Who is Jim Cramer? Jim Cramer is an American former hedge fund manager, stock market investor, author, and entrepreneur. The 67-year old is best known for hosting CNBC television’s “Mad Money”, a show that claims to “provide stock traders with all manner of investing advice.” Cramer is seen as a so-called contrarian investor. He frequently goes against the tide, buying when everyone is selling. The thinking is that investors selling often do so in a panic, tending to overreact. This gives the contrarian investor a chance to buy stocks, or crypto, cheaply. It worked for Cramer at some point. He made a $1 million profit when he bought tobacco firm Phillip Morris International as the share lost $10 billion in one day after an unfavorable court outcome, according to reports. Alan Deutschman, the journalism professor and Silicon Valley correspondent for Fortune, has described Cramer’s investment style as “chameleon-like and erratic.” That’s because it could not be pinned down to a specific strategy. Cramer has also shown interest in cryptocurrency. He bought a significant amount of bitcoin in 2020 when it traded for $12,000. He sold 50% of the cache when the price hit $64,000 the following year, and used the proceeds to “pay off a mortgage.” “I will buy – like I usually do – as something comes down. I’ll get bigger and bigger and bigger,” said Cramer after he bought more bitcoin as it slipped to $17,000 in Dec. 2020. He proved his contrarian style. With an estimated net worth of over $100 million, the TV host has often issued mixed signals regarding crypto. But he also recommended that investors put at least 5% of their portfolios in digital assets, preferably BTC and Ethereum, which he considers “legitimate”. Cramer said recently Silicon Valley tech executives have started to consider the crypto industry a fraud, which benefited its promoters at the expense of retail investors. He followed this up with advice to “sell all speculative assets” like BTC, in part due to the Fed’s tightening monetary policy. Cramer’s missed predictions CNBC says Jim Cramer “plays with an open hand and wants to help investors invest smarter to build long-term wealth.” However, his forecasts on crypto markets have been anything but smart. People likely lost money following his tips. In June 2021, the finance expert urged investors to be “patient” with bitcoin as markets went into a tailspin. Ten days later, Cramer could not take the decline anymore. He claimed BTC is “not going up because of structural reasons.” “Sold all my Bitcoin. Don’t need it,” he told CNBC’s “Squawk Box”. In November of the same year, bitcoin reached an all-time high of $69,000. Earlier in the year, in March, Cramer boasted to have made lots of money from bitcoin as his investments in gold and stocks fell. He was bullish then. More recently, Cramer made calls regarding BTC’s bottom – meaning the asset had reached a price beyond which it could not decline any further during a market cycle. He now claims crypto has no “real value” and will not hold its total market value above $1 trillion. “Crypto really does seem to be imploding. Went from $3 trillion to $1 trillion. Why should it stop at $1 trillion? There’s no real value there,” he said. This would be fine if he a) was a crypto skeptic all along b) ack that he was pushing it when it was going up and got call wrong. Instead he’s a bandwagoner on steroids- last guy to praise stuff bf it collapses and last guy to trash it bf it rebounds. WHERE IS INVERSE CRAMER ETF? https://t.co/6tIMdNO1m6 — Eric Balchunas (@EricBalchunas) July 6, 2022 Following Cramer’s statements in July, markets rallied. July has been the best month for bitcoin so far this year. The top cryptocurrency closed the month with a gain of 17%, and Ethereum, its next closest competitor, soared by 55%. As the price of bitcoin tanked to $17,500 in June, he warned that “a lot of younger people and people who borrowed money, they are going to be gone today if they are not careful.” Cramer did not intend for this to sound like a “joke”. Madman in a suit excites crypto But the veteran investor has lost much of the goodwill in crypto. He is often laughed off as the madman of Crypto Twitter. These predictions – and more – have turned Cramer into the ultimate villain, cannon fodder for memes. His negative comments inspire excitement in cryptocurrency. Crypto trader Algod, famed for predicting the collapse of the Terra ecosystem and taking a $1 million bet on it, said recently that he was actively trading against Cramer. Algod revealed he “officially doubled” a trading account he started with $50,000 just so he would trade against the stock market pundit. “Honestly mind blowing how wrong one man can be,” tweeted the self-proclaimed “semi-retired degen.” Cramer’s “erratic” financial advice has also led to the emergence of the “Inverse Cramer ETF,” a fictional Exchange-Traded Fund which tracks “the stock recommendations of Jim Cramer so you can do the opposite.” The account reached 107,000 followers on Twitter. “I don’t care if a company is the next Amazon. If Jim Cramer is recommending the stock I will never buy,” accountant and financial news analyst, Genevieve Roch-Decter, tweeted after Cramer’s Coinbase miss in July. After Cramer christened bitcoin’s collapse in June “Crypto Monday”, predicting the end for the crypto industry, Dogecoin (DOGE) co-creator Billy Markus responded sharply. “Jim ya gotta shut up sometimes,” Markus replied to a Cramer tweet. jim ya gotta shut up sometimes — Shibetoshi Nakamoto (@BillyM2k) June 13, 2022 For Be[In]Crypto’s latest Bitcoin (BTC) analysis, click here Disclaimer All the information contained on our website is published in good faith and for general information purposes only. The Tar Heels (3-1, 0-0 ACC) look to rebound defensively after giving up 576 yards in total offense to Notre Dame in their 45-32 loss. The performance prompted a players-only meeting on defense to air out what’s wrong and how to fix it. The Hokies (2-2, 1-0) could provide a good opportunity today. They enter the game as the ACC’s 12th-ranked team in both total offense and scoring offense. News & Observer reporter C.L. Both quarterbacks have thrown two interceptions without a TD and neither run game can get going. Pinned Iowa is on the board! Early 4th: Michigan 20, Iowa 7 The Hawkeyes have finally hit paydirt thanks to a two-yard ruch by Kaleb Johnson, but it’s likely too little too late. Iowa still only has 157 yards of offense, and 44 of them just came on its last possession. Michigan has completely dominated the game otherwise. Blake Corum has rushed for 101 yards, while JJ McCarthy has thrown for 148 with a TD pass. It’s hard to imagine the Hawkeyes scoring two more times in the final 15 minutes. At least, not on offense. Pinned Um, Wisconsin? Late 3Q: Illinois 31, Wisconsin 10 The Badgers are behind three scores at home against Illinois. Looks like the last time Illinois won in Madison was 2002. A win for the Illini would be made even sweeter because of the fact that it’s ex-Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema running things for Illinois now. With the Big Ten West in utter chaos, Illinois might need to be taken seriously as a division-title contender. Pinned Kentucky driving in Oxford End Q3: No. 14 Ole Miss 22, No. 7 Kentucky 19 The Wildcats got a touchdown pass from Will Levis to Jordan Dingle early in the third quarter, but Ole Miss took the lead back with field goal with 2:19 to play. The Wildcats answered right back with a stellar 54-yard kickoff return from Barion Brown to set up the final drive of the quarter — which concluded with the Wildcats lining up to go for it on fourth-and-1 from the 38-yard line. Pinned Tied up in Oxford 6:22 Q3: No. 7 Kentucky 19, No. 14 Ole Miss 19 The Wildcats offensive line came out like a different unit in the second half, and was a big reason why they drove down the field and tied things up in Oxford. Quarterback Will Levis had great protection in an eight-play, 49-yard drive that culminated with a 17-yard touchdown strike to Jordan Dingle. The Rebels offense has had a hard time putting together sustained drives, so it’ll be interesting to see how it reacts. Pinned K-State surges ahead Late 3Q: Kansas State 20, Texas Tech 13 Kansas State and Texas Tech are both coming off huge wins last week and are locked in a tight one today. The Wildcats just retook the lead with 6:04 left in the third quarter on an 18-yard pass from Adrian Martinez to Phillip Brooks. K-State led 13-0 early before the Red Raiders answered with 13 unanswered. Martinez has been doing his thing again today after a huge performance at Oklahoma las week. Pinned Frogs emphatic vs. OU Half: TCU 41, Oklahoma 17 TCU is crushing Oklahoma at halftime of the Big 12 matchup in Fort Worth. The Horned Frogs got a monster effort from Max Duggan, who threw for 281 yards and three touchdowns  and added a 67-yard rushing score in the first half against Brent Venables’ squad. Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel threw for 126 yards, but had to leave the game after suffering an apparent head injury that was called for targeting. Backup Davis Beville missed on his first two passes.  Pinned Checking in on the Iowa offense Pinned Minnesota trailing Half: Purdue 10, Minnesota 3 A Minnesota offense that ranked among the nation’s best in many offensive categories entering this game has been off so far at home against Purdue. The Gophers have done nothing in the running game, and Tanner Morgan has thrown two interceptions. Minnesota has been in Purdue territory five times but has just three points to show for it. Pinned Ole Miss up seven at the break Half: No. 14 Ole Miss 19, No. 7 Kentucky 12 The Rebels got a safety on a Will Levis intentional grounding call midway through the quarter and a field goal one drive later. But Wildcats wide receiver Tayvion Robinson scored on a 5-yard shuffle pass to bring the Wildcats within seven going to the break. Both rushing attacks have been solid through 30 minutes, but the passing in this game has been extremely disjointed.  Pinned Dillon Gabriel down Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel just took a vicious hit with 10:30 remaining in the second quarter. TCU’s Jamoi Hodge came in hot and was flagged for targeting on the play after Gabriel gained three yards near midfield. Tough to see, especially since Gabriel dealt with a season-ending injury last season at UCF before transferring. Hope he is OK. Really tough for OU, already trailing 34-10 on the road, to see its starting QB go down like this. Pinned Michigan in control in Iowa City HALF: Michigan 13, Iowa 0 It might only be a two-score game, but it’s a two-score game involving the Iowa offense, so it may as well be four scores. Michigan opened the game with an 11-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, and while it hasn’t been as effective since, it’s tacked on two more field goals. All of which is a lot more than Iowa has been able to manage. The beleagured Hawkeyes offense managed only 91 yards of offense in the first half. Michigan has 236, including 131 on the ground and 105 via the air, as teh Wolverines have run more than twice as many offensive plays than Iowa. The good news for the Hawkeyes is they’ll have a chance to cut into the deficit when they get the ball to start the third quarter. Pinned Will Levis dislocates his finger Q2: No. 14 Ole Miss 16, No. 7 Kentucky 6 Kentucky quarterback Will Levis was called for intentional grounding in the end zone midway through the second quarter to put his team down 16-6. To add insult to injury, he dislocated his middle finger on his non-throwing hand on the play. Trainers popped it back in and taped it up, and Levis stayed in the game. Pinned Highlight! Check out this catch from Zay Flowers. Been a rough season so far for Boston College, but Flowers and Jurkovec finally had a highlight moment here. Pinned TCU rolling 2Q: TCU 27, Oklahoma 10 TCU has taken a blowtorch to Oklahoma’s defense in the first quarter as the Horned Frogs lead 27-10 after the first quarter. Frogs quarterback Max Duggan threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns, and added a 67-yard rushing score in the first 15 minutes alone. The Sooners’ secondary has been rattled since the early going and committed multiple pass interference penalties to try and prevent touchdowns to no avail.  Pinned Rough start End 1Q: Purdue 10, Minnesota 0 Rough start at home for Minnesota as 10.5 point favorites against Purdue. The Gophers went 3-and-out on their first series, threw an interception on their second and then turned it over on downs during their third possession. Purdue QB Aidan O’Connell is back after missing last week and Aled a 10-play TD drive on Purdue’s first series. Minnesota is driving to start the second quarter, but the Gophers are gonna be in fight today, it seems. Pinned Ole Miss rushing attack is cooking vs. Kentucky End Q1: No. 14 Ole Miss 14, No. 7 Kentucky 6 The Rebels came into the season with the SEC’s top rushing offense, and they’re showing it off against the underdog Wildcats in Oxford. Zach Evans had a 4-yard touchdown rush early in the first quarter and Quinshon Judkins scampered 48 yards up the middle for a score late in the frame to build a lead for Lane Kiffin’s crew. Kentucky running back Chris Rodriguez Jr., who had been suspended for the first four games of the year, plunged in on the last play of the quarter to cut it to 14-6. Pinned Michigan and Iowa locked in defensive slog End 1Q: Michigan 7, Iowa 0 Michigan made things look easy on the opening possession of the game, going 75 yards in 11 plays, with Ronnie Bell rushing for a 16-yard touchdown to cap it off. Since then, however, the defenses have settled in and dominated the play. Iowa did put together a decent drive before stalling in Michigan territory and punting. Iowa’s Spencer Petras is having a very Spencer Petras game so far, as he’s completed two of his six passes for 34 yards. Michigan’s JJ McCarthy is 6/7 for 44 yards. Pinned Kansas State cruising 2Q: Kansas State 13, Texas Tech 0 Kansas State is off to a hot start on both sides against Texas Tech. Adrian Martinez already has 67 yards passing and 81 yards rushing with a touchdown. The Wildcats defense is holding the Red Raiders to negative rushing yards early. Texas Tech has just 25 total yards early in the second quarter.  Pinned Aidan O’Connell healthy Big news for Purdue in its game with No. 21 Minnesota that will be kicking off in just a few minutes. Multiple reports indicate quarterback Aidan O’Connell will be available after he missed last week’s close victory over Florida Atlantic. Boilermakers’ coach Jeff Brohm kept O’Connell’s status close to the vest all week. He’s the engine that makes Purdue go, and Minnesota will have its work cut out to cover a 10.5 point spread. Pinned SEC picks SEC Smothered & Covered examines the biggest games and storylines headlining the Week 5 action as Barrett Sallee breaks down the league. With a pair of top-20 matchups (No. 2 Alabama at No. 20 Arkansas and No. 7 Kentucky at No. 14 Ole Miss) and classic SEC West battle between Auburn and LSU, it figures to be a fun October 1 in the league. Library of CongressShow MoreShow Less 4of4 A 1970 map of SAISD elementary-school boundaries, published in the San Antonio Express, shows attendance zones for the district’s schools. Time and population shifts took care of the problem...

Passenger Was Stranded At The Airport After Airline Staff Forgot To Load Their Wheelchair – Insider https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/passenger-was-stranded-at-the-airport-after-airline-staff-forgot-to-load-their-wheelchair-insider/ Xavi Santiago said they were stranded at a Florida airport after American Airlines staff forgot to load their wheelchair. Santiago said they waited in the baggage claim area for about five hours, convinced their chair was lost. “This is not a lost bag. This is my mobility. These are like my legs,” they told Insider. Loading Something is loading. A passenger who flew on American Airlines said they were stranded at the Airport after the airline employees forgot to load their wheelchair. “The entire time, I had no idea if my chair was going to show up. If it was going to be damaged, what was going to happen,” Xavi Santiago, 23, told Insider.”This is not a lost bag. This is my mobility. These are like my legs.” Santiago, who posted about their travel experience in a vial TikTok video said they along with their partner and friends were stranded at the Orlando Airport for almost five hours. The group, which was on vacation, was unable to leave because they were told that Santiago’s power wheelchair was not loaded onto their one-way flight from Los Angeles, California, to Orlando, Florida. A week before departure, the flight had changed to include a layover in Miami, Florida, Santiago said.  “When I booked my flight, I booked a one-way potentially because I am very aware of airlines and how they treat disabled people,”  Santiago said. “I know disabled people who have had their mobility aids broken, damaged, or lost by airlines.” In their layover in Miami, Santiago said they were unable to pre-board, which is a common accommodation for disabled passengers. “That’s always how it goes, I pre-board, I get transferred while the plane is still empty or while other disabled people or other people who are pre-boarding are still getting on,” Santiago said. “That didn’t happen. There was no wheelchair attendant or accessible attendant to get me into the transfer seat.” When Santiago finally made it on the plane, they said they had to squeeze past other passengers to get to the back of the plane to their seats. Santiago said that after an hour-long flight, they arrived in Orlando at 6 pm to find their wheelchair missing and were escorted to the waiting area where their partner was told the chair was not boarded on the connecting flight. “I was really freaking out because getting on the plane was such a mess. I was really worried that my chair still wasn’t here,” Santiago said. “No one was explaining anything to me.” Santiago told Insider they were angry by the airline staff only communicating with their partner. “I constantly have feelings of really not being seen as a person,” Santiago said. “I know it’s a common feeling for a lot of disabled people is they think that because you have physical disabilities, that it means that you’re any less capable or any less competent. And I sure as hell am not either of those things.” While a staff member offered Santiago a temporary wheelchair, they said the airline employee could not find one that could be taken outside of the airport. They would have to wait at the baggage claim area until their wheelchair arrived on the next flight at 9:30, Santiago said.  “I went down in one of the temporary wheelchairs and was trying to sort out getting just a temporary chair that I could use to get to the hotel and they couldn’t find anything,” Santiago said. “They couldn’t find even a manual wheelchair that was my size, that they could get to me.” Santiago, who said they paid more than $22,000 for their electric chair, said they feared they would never see it again and be stuck on vacation without mobility.  “I was convinced that it was not going to make it on the flight and that if I got it back, it was going to be damaged. Just with how many people told me that they hadn’t seen my chair,” Santiago said.  Passengers with disabilities repeatedly call out about harrowing experiences with air travel According to a report from the Department of Transportation published in July, US airlines saw a 108% increase in complaints from flyers with disabilities, from 76 in May 2019 to 158 in the same month this year. A passenger who also flew with American Airlines in July accused the airline crew of destroying his wheelchair and then severely damaging its replacement, costing him  $65,000. Writer and poet Allegra Keys, said her power wheelchair was severely damaged and left inoperable after she flew on Alaska Airlines in September.  US lawmaker Jim Langevin of Rhode Island was barred from his flight twice this year after airline staff thought his power wheelchair violated safety regulations. As US airlines damage thousands of wheelchairs every year, disability advocates and wheelchair users who fly often have urged a shift in the narrative regarding wheelchairs, Insider’s Bethany Dawson previously reported. Rather than saying wheelchairs are being broken, they should be viewed as a part of the body that is being destroyed.  Senator Tammy Duckworth, who also travels using a wheelchair, proposed a new policy last year that requires airlines to report wheelchair breaks and other among other incidents to the Civil Aviation Authority.  “Wheelchairs should be treated like a human limb because they’re my legs,” says Sen. Duckworth previously told  Insider. “When you break my wheelchair, or you lose my wheelchair, you’ve taken away my legs.” ‘Taking up space as a disabled person is the way’ After nearly five hours of discomfort waiting in the luggage area, Santiago said their chair finally arrived at the airport about an hour after midnight.  “I couldn’t leave the airport. It was really difficult for me to get moved and go to the bathroom, hard for me to transfer in and out because the chair isn’t my own. It’s not made to meet my needs,” Santiago said. “I was just uncomfortable and stuck there for several, and it was awful.” American Airlines did not respond to requests for comment. Santiago said American Airlines offered them $300 of in-flight credit in compensation but they refuse to fly American Airlines again.  “While there is a part of me that wants to use the bare minimum of what they’ll give me, I barely want to fly again,” Santiago said. “I really don’t think I’ll ever fly with American Airlines, and I sure as hell am never going to the Miami airport again.” Santiago said that all the positive feedback they received from their TikTok video calling out American Airlines made her feel seen and heard.  “The only way that people will listen to us sometimes is if we are abrasive, if we are angry, if we are pushing and that’s okay,” Santiago said. “It’s something that I have to remind myself of constantly, but taking up space as a disabled person is the way.” They added: “There is nothing wrong with taking up just as much space as able-bodied people and asking and not even asking, demanding for the support and access that we need in order to do the same things as able-bodied people, to travel, to live, to exist and to enjoy our lives. We are deserving of those things.”

Business Growth Requires Effective Change Management MedCity News
Business Growth Requires Effective Change Management MedCity News
Business Growth Requires Effective Change Management – MedCity News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/business-growth-requires-effective-change-management-medcity-news/ Change is all around us. From technological innovations to cultural shifts in the ways we live, play, and travel, our world is in a constant state of motion. Business is moving faster than ever, too, putting more emphasis on change management, which is now viewed as a necessity to guide companies through major adjustments. But how often is exciting and rapid growth considered a major adjustment? Rarely. And that’s a problem. Change management techniques are vital to bringing companies through adjustments in how we do business, how we must adapt to shifting business needs, or changes that have the potential to create discord among employees. Yet, all too often the need for change management in positive growth situations is overlooked. People assume that companies can absorb this kind of change because it’s positive, but change is change. Significant growth, especially in an otherwise fragile economy, can cause significant pain points for employees without the key components of change management. In fact, according to McKinsey & Co., 70 percent of change efforts fail, largely due to employee resistance and lack of management support. This is why change management is such a critical business tool, even in positive growth situations. Rapid growth looks different for each business Rapid growth is very definitional and unique to each business and organization. For example, rapid growth in a non-profit looks much different from rapid growth within a for-profit company; just as rapid growth for a startup differs from that of an established corporation. Growing 20 percent in one year might be huge for the emerging company, while 2 percent growth is impressive for the veteran firm. To understand when change management is needed in positive growth situations, you must first define what rapid growth looks like for your organization. Once defined, and realized, celebrate. Growth is a remarkable achievement that should be shared company wide. Make sure employees feel included, are acknowledged for their contributions, and you communicate to them what this means in terms of change. Be ready to answer the question, “How does this impact me?” Rapid growth can cause the following changes, which need to be managed across an organization: Expanding into other areas or opening new offices Becoming a market leader Employing more staff to meet an increased demand for products or services Changes to job roles to accommodate growth and new expectations Expansion to new customer demographics Culture changes Potential employee burnout Leading people through positive change Change management is defined as: “the application of a structured process and set of tools for leading the people side of change to achieve a desired outcome.” However, there is no one-size-fits-all solution or standard framework that’s repeatable from business to business. It is part of organizational behavior, and the process must be tailored to each entity based on its operating size, type, location, and the platforms available for communicating change. The communication aspect of the change management process is key, but, as is the case with rapid growth, it’s also unique to an organization and the culture of a company in terms of how you message, what you message, what you share, and how transparent you are with your workforce. Like most business processes, someone must take ownership of change management and convey consistent messaging. This could be the CEO, CFO, or CMO, and then further delegated across a team. The person leading the process must be ready to talk about the change that is happening and help people along that journey with clearly defined objectives, accountability, and responsibility for meeting those objectives driven through the organization. Ultimately, and especially in positive growth situations where there is reason to celebrate, you have to make the messaging personal to your teams, to your leadership, and to each individual, whether they are the person answering incoming calls or the person making the upper-most strategic decisions of the company. The messaging must be relatable so employees can embrace change with you and go forward with a positive and clear perspective. You want to take people along for the ride, but also propel them to be their best. Utilize technology, especially the platforms that you currently have, but understand that email, texts, DMs, and other forms of digital communication cannot replace a person being visible during periods of rapid growth and change. Too often companies do a big splash, announcing growth, and then go radio silent. Keeping people informed along the way prepares them and avoids catching them off guard. Measuring results from change management Change can create massive fluctuations in business and affect a company’s culture. The impact of change is really determined by the ability in which you measure employee engagement on a regular basis, not just during periods of rapid growth or when something isn’t working. When implementing any kind of change management framework, feedback mechanisms are necessary. You can use formal feedback forms and quizzes. Or you can have casual conversations with employees. Ask them how they are doing and how they would describe the company and the growth to their family and friends. Is what they would relay to others the messaging you have been trying to convey to them? When going through periods of exponential growth, companies sometimes get so caught up in the excitement that they often lose sight of what got them there in the first place. Always take time to stop and reflect and keep those growth factors in motion. This post appears through the MedCity Influencers program. Seahawks Week 3 MVP: Geno Smith Continues To Do His Job – 12th Man Rising https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/seahawks-week-3-mvp-geno-smith-continues-to-do-his-job-12th-man-rising/ SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – SEPTEMBER 25: Geno Smith #7 of the Seattle Seahawks runs with the ball against the Atlanta Falcons during the second half of the game at Lumen Field on September 25, 2022 in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by Jane Gershovich/Getty Images) The Seahawks didn’t come away with a win vs the Falcons, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t see some strong performances. Geno Smith did more than enough for the Hawks to win. I think it’s clear by now to even the most diehard 12s that this is going to be a tough year for our Seahawks. That was to be expected, considering Seattle moved on from two first-ballot Hall of Famers. Add that the Hawks are starting a minimum of three rookies every game, and the expectations should be relatively low. Now, that doesn’t mean for one moment that the Seahawks don’t have high expectations for themselves. I mean, if they went into any game assuming they’d lose, they wouldn’t be in the NFL. That applies to the rookies as well as the veteran players. I’d say no one on the team has higher expectations for himself than Geno Smith. And so far, he’s more than living up to those. Geno Smith did all he could for a Seahawks win The Hawks made a lot of mistakes in the loss to the Falcons. And I mean, a lot of mistakes. They’re still not running the ball effectively. Through three games, Rashaad Penny only has 32 carries. He’s proven to be a workhorse at this point in his career and should be averaging at least 16 yards per carry. Instead, that’s his season high. The rest of the Hawks backfield has had very little chance to contribute, either. Ken Walker has had just seven carries, despite being healthy for the last two games. DeeJay Dallas and Travis Homer have combined for seven rushing attempts so far this season. The entire team has only run the ball 56 times in three games. For a team that wants to establish the run to open up the passing game, less than 19 carries per game aren’t exactly helping your quarterback. Penny played well in his limited opportunities. Tyler Lockett was targeted 11 times and came away with nine catches, so he did his job as well. But no one came through for the Seahawks like the man who said “I ain’t called back”, Geno Smith. Yes, he threw a pick at the end of the game that sealed the win for the Falcons. He was also five-for-five on that final drive until then. He was only picked off because the Hawks faced fourth-and-18 after a hold by Damien Lewis wiped out a 13-yard catch by Penny. Yes, Smith took a couple of sacks too, including on the Hawks penultimate play. Considering that the Falcons blitzed 12 times, he did very well. In fact, he was only pressured six times on 44 attempts. As recorded by the fine folks at pro-football-reference.com, the Hawks signal caller only made two bad throws for the entire game. The Seahawks had a great chance to win this game. More than anyone else, that was due to the play of Geno Smith.

Commentary: Lessons From History Still Used In Nursing Today – Standard-Examiner https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/commentary-lessons-from-history-still-used-in-nursing-today-standard-examiner/ Photo supplied, Weber State University Rachel Ardern Dec. 7, 1941, is a date that lives in infamy for nearly every American. Movies have been made about it, memorials created, and history has established it as the date that moved the United States into World War II. What is not often recognized is the impact the Pearl Harbor attack had on nursing and the need for trained nurses. At the time, the American Army Corps had less than 1,000 nurses and the Navy Nurse Corps a little over 800. By the end of the war, over 70,000 nurses had served in either the Army or Navy Corps, present in every theater of war and often very close to the front line. But this large number of nurses had an impact on the needs of hospitals back in the United States, which led to the development of an accelerated program, the Cadet Nurse Corps established in the summer of 1943. The program allowed women from all walks of life, who had at least a high school diploma, to become trained nurses. Following the end of the war, Dr. Esther L. Brown prepared a report for the National Nursing Council that attempted to answer the question of who should be responsible for the organization, administration and financing of schools of nursing in the future. In the scathing introduction, Brown assessed a pre-world war nursing education structure that was unable to “produce the requisite amount of qualified general nursing care needed by expanding health services.” Brown acknowledged it was possible to have, within one profession, two different kinds of preparation. In industries such as engineering, the professional or degree-trained practitioner and the practical or associate-trained practitioner were seen as effective measures already in place. Brown argued that nursing would benefit from this differentiation, allowing the professional/bachelor-trained nurse to have a broader scope of work and the technical/associate-trained nurse to function in a narrow scope, while still maintaining their own accountability. Just five years after this report was published, a pilot program of seven nursing schools was established. Weber College, now Weber State University, and its association with the Dee Hospital School of Nursing was selected to participate, with 36 women graduating with the first associate degree of nursing. In 1965, the American Nurses Association recommended the elimination of hospital-based diploma programs and the practical nursing program, and recognized the license and title of the associate-degree nurse as Registered Associate Nurses. It was this auspicious start, almost 70 years ago, that has led to the development of a school of nursing that continues to offer the associate degree. While there is debate surrounding the need for associate-level education, with the profession focused on bachelor-trained nurses, the associate program continues to provide a means of entry into the profession that offers a reasonable return on investment for students in time and money. Recognizing the need to grow and ensure it meets the needs of both the community and health care, Weber State’s Annie Taylor Dee School of Nursing has constantly sought to develop itself. The school continues to be at the forefront of nursing education through partnerships with local technical colleges that provide a transition from practical nursing programs to registered nursing programs, the establishment of innovative simulation suites that provide a safe space where nursing students can practice theoretical and practical skills, and the development of hybrid and online options to better suit the changing environment of education. There is no better example of the school’s continued progress than the first Weber State students to graduate with the Doctorate of Nurse Practitioner degree in spring 2021. Brown wrote, “[I hope] that nursing education will soon be established on a sounder and more substantial base; that nurse educators will be able to look back on these years of struggle and uncertainty with wonder that the road could have seemed so hard, and be able to look ahead … secure in the knowledge that theirs is a socially vital and a socially recognized profession.” While registered nurses are still struggling to break free of the skill-based structure embraced by the public and organizations alike, the Annie Taylor Dee School of Nursing continues to provide a sound and substantial base in both theoretical and practical structures. It is these structures that set up the student, with stepping out points along the way, with a configuration by which they can successfully transition from layperson to registered nurse and beyond. Dr. Rachel Ardern is an assistant professor of nursing at Weber State University’s Annie Taylor Dee School of Nursing, which will celebrate its 70th anniversary next year. We Want To Utilise Metaverse To Enable Monetisation Opportunities For Creators: VP, Global Business Group At Meta – BusinessLine https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/we-want-to-utilise-metaverse-to-enable-monetisation-opportunities-for-creators-vp-global-business-group-at-meta-businessline/ As the introduction of Reels boosts engagement across Meta’s various platforms, VP Global Business Group at Meta Nicola Mendelsohn, emphasised Meta’s goal to utilise metaverse technologies to create monetisation opportunities for creators. Meta claims that since the introduction of Reels on Instagram in 2020, the company has been able to create a massive community of creators, which has also driven engagement on the platform. Consequently, Mendelsohn notes that creators can utilise Meta’s pivot to Web 3.0 to truly drive further engagement: from creating digital collectibles, 3D avatars, and NFTs, to utilising augmented and virtual reality for monetisation purposes. Monetisation opportunities Meta’s emphasis on the utilisation of Web 3.0 for monetisation purposes is novel, especially as presently, the majority of monetisation opportunities on Reels are restricted to product sponsorships and dedicated creator funds for a certain category of influencers on Meta’s various platforms. Speaking on Creator Day 2022 in Mumbai on Friday, Mendelsohn noted that influencers and brands can bring NFTs to a wider audience using their follower base on Meta’s various platforms. “We want to help create monetisation opportunities, such as bringing NFTs to a wider audience. By enabling sharing of digital collectibles on Instagram. We see brands and creators utilisation of AR, VR and in an amazingly creative way, which will only continue as we expand further towards metaverse,” she said.  “We are committed to being a playground where creators and users can interact and redefine engagement,” Mendelsohn added.  Ajit Mohan, MD & VP, Facebook India (Meta) who also attended the event noted, “We are big fans of creators. Everything we do, all our products and features are based on one thought: how can we empower the people who have a story to tell, an insight to share, a song to dance to? Without a doubt, a key pillar of India’s new economy is going to be built and fuelled by people like you.”

Solana Price Plunges As Blockchain Suffers Outage Again – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/solana-price-plunges-as-blockchain-suffers-outage-again-cryptonews/ Source: AdobeStock / JorgeEduardo Solana’s price has taken a hit amid another major outage that has grinded the network activity to a halt. Crypto pundit and host of NFT Alpha show, Nick Valdez first brought the development to public attention on Twitter after a series of speculative mentions. A few hours later, the official Solana Twitter handle confirmed the report in the early hours of Saturday. According to the handle, the network experienced an outage and transactions were no longer being processed. The Solana team assured the community that network developers were already up and about, looking to resolve the issue.  This incident marks the fourth time Solana is experiencing a major outage this year. The network is now renowned within the crypto community for its occasional blackouts, as several proponents have cited the pattern as a reason to steer clear of the chain. Following confirmation of the outage, Solana shared a document with instructions to validators on steps to take in order to assist in solving the issue. The network has been successfully restarted as of press time, and fully operational.  Despite the resolution, the network’s outage lasted for over 8 hours. Solana’s price has, in tandem with the majority of the markets, seen a dip within this timeframe. While it might be a reach to ascribe Solana’s current price situation to the recent outage, the asset has in the past undoubtedly suffered from a network blackout. Solana is currently trading at $32.98 as of press time, down 3.43% in the past 24 hours. Since its fall from the lofty position of $47.9 on August 13, the asset has been caught in a bearish pattern. The asset saw a free fall from August 13 to August 19 which brought it below the $40-mark. Solana has not revisited the zone at $40 since then. What Caused Solana’s Recent Outage? Limited information has surfaced on the root cause of the issue. Laine Stakewiz, a blockchain company running Solana nodes, recently shared insight on the matter. Several Solana validators stopped voting around 22:40 (UTC) on Friday. Operators received alerts of the issue and congregated on Discord to discuss it and find a solution. The network appeared to have been stuck as it was confirmed that new roots were not being produced. According to Laine Stakewiz, it was noticed that a validator shared an invalid block. The incident on its own oughtn’t result in a major issue, as it could be resolved by the network. Notwithstanding, the validator seemed to have been on two “instances,” with both producing an invalid block. The act led to the creation of a fork. The fork, in turn, resulted in an abstruse code path with validators stuck on it. Attempts to switch to the main Solana fork proved futile, leading to a halt in network activity. Upon discovering the core issue, developers noted that a cluster restart was required to resolve the outage.

Analysis | Portugal Beats Paris For US Travelers Seizing On A Strong Dollar – The Washington Post https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/analysis-portugal-beats-paris-for-us-travelers-seizing-on-a-strong-dollar-the-washington-post/ As the pound and euro struggle relative to the dollar, opportunistic US travelers might be wondering if it’s time to book an international trip, and maybe even prepay for the hotel. Who wouldn’t love a travel deal — especially after paying through the nose this past summer? But don’t think there are bargain-basement prices everywhere in the UK and Europe. Sure, the dollar may get you 20% more when dining or shopping, but in-demand hotels are still expensive. For example, high-end accommodations in places such as Paris and Capri have increased their rates by as much as 40% and are likely to keep them there, according to Melissa Biggs Bradley, founder of luxury travel agency Indagare. If the main objective is to stay somewhere special at a hard-to-beat price, you’d be better off in countries like Sweden, Portugal or Turkey. According to travel experts, those destinations are offering the best value when taking currency changes as well as airfare and accommodations into account. Take the Grand Hotel  in Stockholm , a five-star hotel overlooking the Royal Palace, with rooms for less than $300 a night from now through April. Spring break in Lisbon? A nonstop roundtrip on several carriers from East-coast cities will cost less than $500. For winter travel, Bradley suggests looking into ski resorts in Europe, such as Alta Badia in Italy, which might actually be cheaper all-in than domestic hotspots like Jackson Hole thanks to the strength of the US dollar. Still, if you have your heart set on a more popular European destination, there are things to keep in mind to make sure you’re still getting somewhat of a deal. First, think about whether you want to actually spend less on the trip than you ordinarily would have, or spend the same amount and “book up” — that is, stay in a fancier hotel than you had originally envisioned, or book a particular attraction or experience. Also, consider when you’re going. Fall and winter are considered the shoulder season, of course, so flights tend to be cheaper then. Last spring, airfare jumped 19% from March to April, a record, but has been declining month-to-month since June, according to Scott Keyes, founder of Scott’s Cheap Flights. Keyes says he’s doesn’t expect fares to jump as much as they did last spring, and instead, to fluctuate more within the typical 5% increase or decrease. Nonstop flights to London’s Heathrow airport are still close to $1,000 for most of this year and next, but if you’re willing to fly mid-week, you can save more than $300. And if you fly to Gatwick, low-cost carrier Norse Atlantic Airways currently offers flights as low as $400. Remember, there’s no set day or time to book your trip that will magically guarantee the cheapest airfare. The best advice is to set a Google flight alert about six months out from travel and go from there. If the price of a flight drops, you can sometimes rebook at a lower price and receive a voucher for the difference to put toward a future flight. That’s thanks to a pandemic-induced change by major US airlines that allows travelers to change an existing flight without incurring a fee. But you’re responsible for continuing to track the flight after booking and noticing that the price has gone down. And if you buy the most basic economy fare, you probably won’t be eligible. In terms of prepayment, you might want to think twice about paying for your hotel now. Sure, you’ll get a more favorable exchange rate and lock in a lower price, but it’s usually no more than a 10% discount and almost always non-refundable. That just seems too risky given the state of the world. Another helpful tip from Clint Henderson, an editor at The Points Guy: Check out combination hotel deals from airlines. Henderson says he’s stayed at high-end hotels including the Park Hyatt in Vienna and Adlon Kempinski in Berlin for drastically less thanks to hotel/airline package deals offered by American Airlines and Delta. You can sign up for emails from the carriers directly. Finally, if you’re shopping for luxury goods in Europe, keep in mind that you’re eligible to be refunded at the airport for the VAT sales tax included in the price of the item at the store, as long as you fill out the relevant paperwork. (Sorry, London shoppers: The UK ended the VAT refund in 2021.) Given the refund and the stronger dollar, consumers could see discounts of as much as 35% on designer labels bought in Paris or Rome compared to buying them at the brand’s store in the US, says Bradley. Just don’t get carried away and let “discount shopping” wind up costing more than the trip. More From Bloomberg Opinion: • Air Travel Is Awful. Google Released A Second Chrome Security Update This Week – Ghacks https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/google-released-a-second-chrome-security-update-this-week-ghacks/ Google published a new security update for the company’s Chrome web browser that addresses three security issues in the browser. The new update comes less than a week after the release of Chrome 106, which addressed a total of 20 security issues in Chrome. The new security update is available already. Chrome is updated automatically by default, but updates may happen days or even weeks after the release. It is better, often, to install the update manually to protect the browser against potential attacks targeting the security issues. To do so, load chrome://settings/help in the browser’s address bar or go to Menu Help About Google Chrome. Chrome displays the current version that is installed and runs a check for updates. The check will pick up the new security update and install it in the browser. Once installed Chrome Stable should display version 106.0.5249.91 and Chrome Extended Stable should display version 106.0.5249.91, which can be checked on the Help page. Google reveals that two of the reported security issues have a severity rating of high. High is the second-highest rating after critical. One security issue was detected internally, and that means that it is not revealed by the company to the public. [$7000][1366813] High CVE-2022-3370: Use after free in Custom Elements. War Games: Real Conflicts Is A UK Exhibition Exploring “what Video Games Tell Us About Conflict” – Eurogamer.net https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/war-games-real-conflicts-is-a-uk-exhibition-exploring-what-video-games-tell-us-about-conflict-eurogamer-net/ It’s open now and runs until May 2023. Imperial War Museum / Kathleen Arundell Imperial War Museum London’s new exhibition wants to challenge “perceptions of how video games interpret stories about war and conflict”. Entitled War Games: Real Conflicts | Virtual Worlds | Extreme Entertainment, the exhibition is running from now until May 2023 and seeks to “delve into one of today’s most popular storytelling mediums and ask how the reality of war is represented in the virtual world of a video game”. “Featuring 12 diverse case studies, War Games invites visitors to interrogate the tension that exists between the thrill and tragedy of warfare in a game and its repercussions in the real world,” a press release says. “Common gameplay tropes such as explosive barrels and sniper rifles feature next to collection items like facial prosthetics developed in the First World War. The exhibition also explores how video game technology can be used, and is used, to help shape real wars, presenting brand new acquisitions including an Xbox 360 controller once used to operate the camera of an unmanned aerial vehicle in Afghanistan and Iraq.” There will be “immersive installations, never-before-displayed objects and perspectives from industry experts” as well as the chance to see games like Sniper Elite 5, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, This War of Mine, and Bury Me, My Love, and explore how different developers have portrayed conflict. On Saturday 26 November 2022, IWM will also present War Games Live, a “half day festival exploring the phenomenon of war video games” led by Brenda and John Romero and Jordan Erica Webber. You can expect live performances, talks, and after-hours access to the exhibition, too. Sponsored by Rebellion, the festival also includes a retro game zone and a Games Jam in association with the Historical Games Network and the University of Glasgow’s Games and Gaming Lab.

Jarren Diego Garcia Convicted Of Murdering Mark Ramos – Law & Crime https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/jarren-diego-garcia-convicted-of-murdering-mark-ramos-law-crime/ Jarren Diego Garcia A Texas man was recently sentenced to just shy of two decades in prison for shooting and killing his stepfather in March 2021. On Friday, Bexar County jurors found Jarren Diego Garcia, 20, guilty of murder and sentenced him to an 18-year-long term of incarceration. He must spend at least half of his sentence behind bars before he is eligible for parole, according to the San Antonio Express-News. The violence occurred during the early morning hours of March 5, 2021, in a neighborhood on San Antonio’s South Side. The shooting took the life of 49-year-old Mark Ramos. The defendant was 19 years old at the time of the incident, according to a police report cited by San Antonio-based ABC affiliate KSAT. When arrested, Garcia said he intervened in an argument between his mother and the deceased – wherein Ramos was allegedly threatening his wife, Bertha Garcia, the defendant’s mother – resulting in a physical altercation. Garcia cooperated with law enforcement during his initial arrest and consistently maintained the incident was a matter of self-defense. During trial, two versions of the story were told. According to a KSAT report of opening statements, prosecutors said Ramos and Bertha Garcia were arguing, and the woman’s sons heard the commotion, ultimately seeing the man pour a beer on his wife. The Express-News vividly captures that domestic abuse incident and its immediate aftermath in their own courtroom report: As Garcia closed her eyes to keep the beer out, her son, whom she calls Diego, and another son, then 14, confronted her husband, their stepfather. Moments later, Garcia said, Ramos grabbed a portable speaker and threw it at Jarren. As the fight intensified, she began begging the men to stop. The speaker attack prompted Jarren Garcia to grab a gun, prosecutors said. Bertha Garcia testified that she got in front of her son, begging him to stop, and hit him a few times to try and defuse the situation. “I’m telling him not to (shoot), it’s not worth it,” she said, according to the Express-News report. She went on to say her husband and older son kept “trash talking, and before I knew it, he shot. He shot over me.” “He did not have to die,” she added later, through tears. The now 16-year-old younger Garcia brother also testified, saying he intervened in the fight because Ramos had keys in between his fingers and was at one point, “trying to stab” the two siblings. Prosecutors would eventually come to question aspects of the testimony provided by the defendant’s mother and brother, arguing that there were inconsistencies in their testimony and what they initially told police. The younger brother allegedly initially told police he didn’t see the shooting because he was putting on his shoes. During trial, the younger Garcia brother testified along the lines of what his mother said. In the end, the state repeatedly referred to Bertha Garcia’s tearful recollection of the shooting itself when making their case. “His mom is actively trying to stop him from committing murder,” Assistant District Attorney Oscar Peña said. “Mark tries to walk out of the house but Diego follows him. Diego follows him out of the house and continues to fire and shoots six times.” Ramos was taken to a nearby hospital in San Antonio after the shooting where he later succumbed to his injuries. The deceased man’s history of domestic abuse was brought up during trial. “He had no problem being aggressive, wanting to hurt people; he would be out of control, and that night, he was out of control,” defense attorney Charles Banker said, according to KSAT. But the defendant’s self-defense argument was rejected by jurors. Jarren Garcia faced a possible sentence of life in prison. [image via Bexar County Sheriff’s Office] Have a tip we should know? Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Credit Card Review: Solid Sign-Up Bonus With Limited Perks The Points Guy
Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Credit Card Review: Solid Sign-Up Bonus With Limited Perks The Points Guy
Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Credit Card Review: Solid Sign-Up Bonus With Limited Perks – The Points Guy https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/marriott-bonvoy-bountiful-credit-card-review-solid-sign-up-bonus-with-limited-perks-the-points-guy/ Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Card overview The Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Card is one of two brand-new Marriott cards that launched in September 2022. While it offers a lucrative sign-up bonus, the overall benefits fall short of what you’d might expect from a card that carries a $250 annual fee. Card rating*: * Card rating is based on the opinion of TPG’s editors and is not influenced by the card issuer. Marriott now has six cobranded cards available to new cardholders, with annual fees on those ranging from $0 to $650 per year. The Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Card from Chase launched on Sept. 22, 2022 along with its nearly-identical sibling, the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy American Express Card. The Bountiful card sits in the middle of the range of annual fees on Marriott credit cards, with an annual fee of $250. Sign up for our daily newsletter The card currently has a welcome offer of 125,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points after you use your new card to make $4,000 in eligible purchases within the first three months from account opening. Beyond that, cardholders enjoy complimentary Marriott Gold status along with higher earning rates for hotel purchases and in some common spending categories. That said, the card is missing a feature that you may consider standard for a hotel credit card: a complimentary free night when you renew your card. This is often included with introductory cards that have annual fees less than $100, so does the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card offer enough value to offset that gap? Here’s a full review of the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card to help you decide if it’s a fit for your wallet. The information for the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. Who is this card for? The Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card could be a good option for those looking for automatic Marriott Bonvoy status but who aren’t willing to pay higher annual fees for premium or luxury credit cards that offer higher status levels. It may also be a good choice for people who want the consumer protections it offers when shopping or traveling — though these aren’t as robust as some higher-end cards. THE POINTS GUY Holders of the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful enjoy automatic Gold Elite status for as long as the card remains open, without needing to reach the normal qualification threshold (25 nights per year). Additionally, when you swipe the card, you may be eligible for reimbursement if your trip is delayed or an item you purchased is damaged, and the annual fee that unlocks these protections is lower than other premium cards. That said, if you’re looking to make the most of your points and miles strategy, you may have difficulty justifying the card — especially because of the lack of perks. Related: Which Marriott Bonvoy credit card is right for you? Remember that Chase has application restrictions that you should be aware of if you decide to apply. While this is a new card and we don’t have application data to confirm it, it’s a near certainty that this card will be subject to Chase’s 5/24 rule. If you’ve opened five or more credit cards in the past 24 months, and these can be seen on your credit report, then you will likely be denied when applying for this or any other credit card from Chase. If you’re interested in the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card but are ineligible due to 5/24, you may want to consider its nearly-identical sibling, the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Bevy card. Welcome offer: $1,050 in value The Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card has a current offer of 125,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points for applicants who use the new card to make $4,000 in eligible purchases within the first three months from account opening. Based on TPG’s valuation of Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.84 cents each, the 125,000 points are worth $1,050. Remember that there are restrictions on new member credit card bonuses if you’ve had similar Marriott credit card products from American Express or Chase, or previous Starwood Preferred Guest cards from American Express. Be sure to carefully review the card’s offer details page to ensure you’re eligible. See also: The ultimate guide to credit card application restrictions Main benefits and perks The Bonvoy Bountiful card offers some perks that could make it worthwhile for some travelers: Marriott Gold Elite status: Primary cardholders (authorized users aren’t included) receive automatic Marriott Gold status as long as the account is open. TPG values Marriott’s Gold status at $800 per year. This is Marriott Bonvoy’s mid-tier level, and the most valuable benefits of Gold status are upgrades to enhanced rooms (when available) and a 25% points bonus on hotel spending. While many hotel credit cards offer a way to spend your way toward higher status levels, that’s noticeably absent on the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card. Annual free night award via spending: When you spend at least $15,000 on eligible purchases during your cardmember year (not calendar year), you’ll earn a free night certificate that can cover a one-night stay costing up to 50,000 points. This is more valuable than those offered on lower-tier Marriott cards (which are capped at 35,000 points). However, those are available without a spending requirement, whereas the Bountiful requires $15,000 in spending per year. That said, there are some terrific uses of the 50,000-point free night certificate — though bear in mind that Marriott’s dynamic pricing may affect these properties, especially on high-demand dates. Elite night credits: When you hold the Bountiful card, you’ll automatically receive 15 elite qualifying night credits per year. This benefit can be stacked with the nights you earn with a Marriott small-business card, which will put you 60% of the way to Platinum Elite status. However, this only applies to business cards. If you have another personal Marriott card from either Chase or American Express, you’re limited to just 15 nights. Bonus points on each stay: Cardholders receive 1,000 bonus points on each eligible stay at hotels and resorts participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program. This is equivalent to an extra $8.40 worth of points based on TPG’s valuations. Travel protections: This card offers trip delay insurance for trips delayed by more than 12 hours due to a covered reason when you pay for at least part of your trip with the Bountiful card (which includes paying the taxes and fees on your flight award redemption). You’ll also enjoy baggage delay protection — which reimburses up to $100 per day for essentials while waiting for your luggage — and lost luggage reimbursement of up to $3,000 per covered person per covered trip. You’ll also receive secondary car rental loss and damage insurance, roadside dispatch services (pay per use), travel accident insurance and travel emergency assistance services, which can connect you to emergency service providers during a time of need. Note that there may be charges for these services when provided by third parties. Shopping protections: Purchases made with the card can get 120 days of purchase protection (up to $500 per claim and up to $50,000 per account) for theft, damage or loss of new items and up to one year of extended warranty coverage on warranties of three years or less on covered purchases worldwide (up to $10,000 per claim and up to $50,000 per account). Related: Your guide to Chase’s trip insurance coverage All that said, it’s worth mentioning what’s absent in the perks and benefits. In short, the card is missing a variety of things that are frequently found on cards with the same (or even lower) annual fees. This includes: A free night award given automatically on the card’s account anniversary each year. Reimbursement for the application fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. Statement credits for ancillary fees or other purchases. Access to Priority Pass lounges. While unlimited Priority Pass access is usually reserved for cards with higher fees — like the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express® Card and Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card — even the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card allows cardholders to enter a participating lounge 10 times per year for a lower annual fee ($0 introductory fee the first year, then $95; see rates and fees). Note that enrollment is required in advance is required for some of these benefits. Le Meridien Bora Bora. MARRIOTT How to earn points The Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Card has similar earning rates to other Marriott credit cards like the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card and Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card. However, there are some notable differences. For starters, Bountiful cardholders can earn 6 Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar on purchases at hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program, which matches most other cobranded cards. Then, you’ll earn 4 points per dollar at restaurants worldwide and U.S. supermarkets (on the first $15,000 per year in combined purchases, then 1 point per dollar after reaching this limit). All other purchases will earn 2 points per dollar. Related: Which credit card should you use for Marriott stays? As noted previously, TPG’s valuations peg Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.84 cents apiece. This translates into a 5.04% return at Marriott properties, a 3.36% return for the first $15,000 spent at restaurants and supermarkets and a 1.68% return for all other purchases. This is decent for loyal Marriott travelers who want to boost their balances of Bonvoy points, but it’s worth noting that other cards can provide a better option for earning rewards on non-bonus spending categories...

Cloudflare Makes Hardware Security Keys Accessible For Millions Of Customers – Tech Business News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/cloudflare-makes-hardware-security-keys-accessible-for-millions-of-customers-tech-business-news/ Cloudflare Democratizes Spoof-Proof Security; Makes Hardware Security Keys More Accessible Than Ever for Millions of Customers Because it’s Good for the Internet Cloudflare has introduced a new service to make physical security keys the most economical and accessible method for safeguarding their employees and businesses. As of 29th September, hardware security keys are an additional layer of protection and a method of MFA that has been proven to be phishing resistant. Customers will be able to purchase Yubico’s security keys, the most secure hardware security keys and most resistant phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (MFA), at an exclusive “good for the internet” price. A Zero Trust security model means that no one is trusted, by default, regardless if they’re inside or outside of a corporate network. This means verification is required from everyone trying to gain access to resources on that organization’s network, including location, familiar devices, and passwords. As a Cloudflare customer, you can now purchase Yubico’s Security Key Series at a much lower price—as little as $10—through your Cloudflare dashboard. Larger corporations using Cloudflare and purchasing a multi-year YubiEnterprise Subscription for YubiKeys will receive a 50% discount on their first year of a 3+ year subscription. Through this partnership, organisations of all sizes will be able to acquire, activate, and verify using security keys with ease and convenience. Cloudflare prevented a breach from a SMS phishing attack that targeted more than 130 companies in July by employing Cloudflare Zero Trust paired with YubiKeys. While physical security keys help to prevent attacks, they work in conjunction with DNS filtering, browser isolation, cloud email security, and other security measures to prevent attacks, an assailant would need to compromise every signal. Dane Knecht, SVP, Emerging Technology and Incubation at Cloudflare says we are always looking for ways to provide the highest possible security to its customers and the Internet at large. “With phishing attacks becoming more prevalent, we want to help democratize additional security measures to further enhance the Cloudflare Zero Trust experience.” “We experienced this firsthand and wanted to make using hardware security keys simple for any organisation,” says Knecht According to Knecht working with Yubico is just another way Cloudflare is trying to make it as seamless as possible to arm our customers with the best Zero Trust security strategy. “Being a Cloudflare Zero Trust customer introduces an easy, fast and affordable way to implement security keys in your organization, and all part of our greater mission to help build a better Internet.” he said With the adoption of Yubico, Cloudflare is ensuring physical security keys are: Economical: Rolling out security keys can be difficult for companies with smaller security teams, or those that have just begun using two-factor authentication. By offering security keys at the most affordable rate, this offer makes the keys less of a financial burden on small companies. Simple to use: Setting up security keys is easy for participating Cloudflare customers. For Administrators, Cloudflare Zero Trust makes it easy to use your security keys with any Identity Provider (IdP) and integrates both the keys and IdP into a comprehensive Zero Trust solution. For employees, a simple guided prompt makes the action of touching a security key for authentication seamless. Security keys work across all devices, operating systems, and areas within an organization. Accessible: Now Cloudflare customers can order Security Key Series, supporting FIDO-based authentication, directly through their dashboard. The YubiKey 5 Series, available through YubiEnterprise Subscription, supports multiple authentication protocols, from legacy applications to modern FIDO-based apps and services. The exclusive “good for the Internet” pricing, helps to introduce the value and functionality of hardware keys to Cloudflare customers. Stina Ehrenvard, CEO and co-founder, Yubico says Yubico pioneered the modern security key, the YubiKey, and continues to set the industry standard, protecting enterprise customers and consumers from security threats. “Today’s attacks require modern MFA. Working with Cloudflare will help get more Security Keys and YubiKeys into the hands of their customers, to deliver on the combination of phishing-resistant MFA and provide peace of mind.” says Ehrenvard The promotion will be available to Cloudflare customers until December 31, 2022. Guest Column: State Must Address Health Care Disparities In Cities Like Gary Chicago Tribune
Guest Column: State Must Address Health Care Disparities In Cities Like Gary Chicago Tribune
Guest Column: State Must Address Health Care Disparities In Cities Like Gary – Chicago Tribune https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/guest-column-state-must-address-health-care-disparities-in-cities-like-gary-chicago-tribune/ In response to a recent RoundTable discussion with legislators and local providers on the health crisis in Gary hosted by Senator Eddie Melton (D-Gary), State Rep. Vernon G. Smith (D-Gary) comments on the community’s health desert and urges the state to address the harmful systemic disparities. Recently, I attended a RoundTable hosted by Senate Assistant Democratic Leader Eddie Melton, D-Gary, with healthcare providers and stakeholders of Lake County to discuss the status of healthcare in Gary. This was the first time in the recent past that Gary providers had ever convened to discuss the health status of our community. The response from the healthcare providers attending, as well as state legislators like Rep. Ragen Hatcher, D-Gary, was compelling and I also want to thank them for showing their support for Gary. This initiative to bring local leaders, lawmakers and providers together to craft a plan forward in advancing the health of Gary is greatly needed. By shedding light on the discrepancies of healthcare within the community, Melton is setting the stage for a future in which equitable health is accessible to all. Our collective actions remind me of a certain passage in the Book of Habakkuk: in order to create a future where all can have true quality of life, we as lawmakers and leaders must “write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it” (Habakkuk 2:2). We started the conversation but there is plenty of work to be done. Being Black in America is bad for your health. Being a Hoosier living in Gary is bad for your health. These statements have only become more true as the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the long-standing health care inequalities facing people of color from disproportionately underserved communities. A multitude of factors, including access to pharmacies, food deserts, mental health care and even public transportation can all determine whether someone lives or dies, or whether someone merely survives or thrives. Gary has all of these problems, including a drastic health desert. All of these issues can and should be addressed with cultural competence training, greater empathy and respect for those of different colors and creeds. However, none of that can be done or have meaningful impact until state leaders put resources and policy proposals behind addressing these inequities. In Gary, there are only five practicing pediatricians. Let me make that clear — in a city of over 75,000 people, there are only FIVE pediatricians. This is a deeply disturbing reality for all families and children who must live it. On the other hand, the city of Noblesville (with a comparable population size to Gary), has about 125 pediatricians. A discrepancy this large and deadly must be addressed as soon as possible, especially considering that Indiana’s infant mortality rate is 20 percent higher than the national average. It’s a well-known fact that the better health care a child receives early in life, the healthier their outcomes are as an adult. Furthermore, Indiana’s African American population already faces disproportionate rates of diabetes, hypertension and a decreased life expectancy. The sooner we can get our children on the path of a healthy life, the better. Post Tribune Twice-weekly News updates from Northwest Indiana delivered every Monday and Wednesday A lack of pediatricians is not the only problem facing our community. There are elderly and low-income residents that need to be cared for by increasing Medicare and Medicaid funding. There is a great need for more investment in crisis mental health mobile units. There are high rates of pollution further exacerbating health problems like asthma, gaps in accessing safe and reliable transportation that would allow patients to travel for care, and even insufficient pharmacies. In fact, I have heard rumor of a local pharmacy having more alcohol available than medication. That is sad and insulting to all. Each of these concerns are tied to the next systematically, serving as barriers that prevent people of color, the elderly and those from low-income backgrounds in Gary from living dignified and healthy lives. Systematic disparities require systematic changes, including government funding, adequate health funding, local partnerships, effective policies and increased research. While these issues may seem like exaggerated statements, data-driven research has proven them true time and time again. The healthcare situation within Gary is complex and sobering, but hope is not all lost. Just as Senator Melton stated, the RoundTable discussion was a great start in beginning to address and understand the health challenges our community is facing. Throughout my 32 years at the legislature, I have promoted a platform of healthcare, employment, education and addressing all other inequities Hoosiers face. I will continue to work tirelessly in promoting our health needs and concerns to the Indiana General Assembly. Our state has a surplus of over $6.1 billion dollars; there is no reason why we cannot use even just a portion of that money to invest in the plethora of healthcare needs that the community of Gary is facing. In closing, I want to state that, regardless of how much money you have or what your social status is, if you don’t have health, you don’t have quality of life. Physicians — I am asking you to stop being afraid of our community. Legislators — I am asking you to stop ignoring the needs of our people. Take heed of Senator Melton’s actions and the overwhelming response of providers and join us in working to put an end to these discrepancies in medical care. Equality in health care is equality in life. Vernon G. Smith is a Indiana State Representative for parts of Gary and Merrillville.

Navy Vs. Air Force Live Stream, Watch Online, TV Channel, Kickoff Time, Football Game Odds, Prediction – CBS Sports https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/navy-vs-air-force-live-stream-watch-online-tv-channel-kickoff-time-football-game-odds-prediction-cbs-sports/ The race for the 51st Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy begins Saturday when Navy faces Air Force. The annual award given to the team with the best record of the three service academies (including Army) is one of the great highlights and traditions in college football, and after a 2021 season where the three schools split the series for the fifth time, the excitement for an outright winner is higher than ever.  Army “retained” the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy as a result of the split, but that retention was met with some disappointment because it was Navy’s upset win in the Army vs. Navy Game at the end of the season that led to all three schools having a 1-1 record in the series. Navy is looking to bring that same upset-friendly approach to Saturday’s showdown in Colorado Springs, Colorado, as Air Force has won three of the last four meetings against the Midshipmen and enters the game as a heavy favorite.  While some rivalry games include the phrase “throw out the record books,” it is actually those books themselves that speak to the pride in this particular matchup in the history of the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy. Air Force (20) and Navy (16) have combined for 36 of the 45 outright wins in the history of the series, and in every season from 1997 to 2016, it was the winner of this game that would go on to win the trophy. So not only is this the first edition of the coveted rivalry series, but potentially the most impactful in determining the winner.   How to watch Navy vs. Air Force live Date: Saturday, Oct. 1 | Time: Noon ET Location: Falcon Stadium — Colorado Springs, Colorado TV: CBS | Live stream: CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App (Free) Navy vs. Air Force: Need to know Air Force offense is dominant on the ground: Air Force led the nation in rushing in 2020 and 2021, so it’s not a huge surprise to see the Falcons leading the nation again here through four weeks of the season. But even for this program, the 2022 season has gotten off to a special start. The Falcons are currently averaging a whopping 412.3 rushing yards per game, a mark that’s more than 80 yards per game higher than the rushing title averages of the last two seasons. The 2022 average is likely to regress a little with more games added to the season totals, but the fact that Air Force is leading the way should be no surprise. This is an offense that has had one really off day in a loss against Wyoming, but otherwise has been so efficient that there have been two games where the Falcons have not punted.   Navy run defense a highlight in the 1-2 start: The Midshipmen got off to an 0-2 start but rallied to get their first win of the year in a 23-20 double-overtime victory at ECU. But what’s been strong all season, even through the losses to Delaware and Memphis, has been the run defense. Navy currently ranks fifth nationally, allowing just 69 yards per game and 2.33 yards per attempt on the ground, and much like Air Force’s rushing offense that kind of performance is not the expectation in this matchup of strength-on-strength in a rivalry game. Navy has a slight advantage against its service academy rivals because of the familiarity, but this year the Midshipmen have been strong against the run, and that gives them their best chance to win.  A rubber match in the coaching rivalry: Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo and Air Force coach Troy Calhoun are two of the 25 winningest active coaches in college football and currently rank in the top six on the active list of coaches who have won all of their games at one school. Calhoun has won three of the last four, but the series between the two coaches is tied 7-7 with Saturday’s game breaking the tie.  Navy vs. Air Force prediction, pick Odds via Caesars Sportsbook Since 2005, the under in games between service academies is 41-9-1. Two run-heavy teams playing against each other means the clock does not stop often and the number of possessions is limited, plus both defenses are used to playing against option attacks, so the big plays aren’t going to hit as often. The totals for these games have been dropping since the trend started in 2005; it’s much tougher to see unders hit in the 30s than the 40s or low 50s, but we ride with the trend. Prediction: Under 38 Which college football picks can you make with confidence in Week 5, and which top-10 favorite will go down hard? Visit SportsLine to see which teams will win and cover the spread — all from a proven computer model that has returned more than $3,100 in profit over the past six-plus seasons — and find out.

Uniswap To Raise $100 Million In New Funding Round Cryptonews
Uniswap To Raise $100 Million In New Funding Round Cryptonews
Uniswap To Raise $100 Million In New Funding Round – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/uniswap-to-raise-100-million-in-new-funding-round-cryptonews/ Image credit: Uniswap Uniswap Labs – the firm behind one of the world’s largest decentralized exchanges, Uniswap – is looking to raise a massive $100M fund in its latest funding round. This round follows Uniswap’s previous Series A funding in 2020. American online newspaper TechCrunch uncovered the development in a report Friday. According to the report, TechCrunch received intel from four reliable sources on the Uniswap deal which is currently in its early stages. The sources have chosen to remain anonymous. Uniswap will see fundings from several entities including a Singaporean social wealth fund, and California-based investment giant Polychain. The fund will welcome investments to the tune of $100 million to $200 million at a $1 billion valuation for Uniswap.  The sources indicated that the fund is still in its early stages, as previously mentioned, and as a consequence, the terms surrounding it are likely to see a change as negotiations progress. Neither Uniswap nor Polychain has divulged any relevant information regarding the report. Should the funding round materialize, it would serve as Uniswap’s second funding series in the space of two years. The firm concluded its Series A funding in August of 2020. The funding round which raised $11M was led by venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz (a16z). Uniswap’s Expansion Intentions Uniswap is regarded as the world’s largest decentralized exchange, and the fourth-largest exchange in the world. Since its launch in 2018 by computer engineer Hayden Adams, Uniswap has seen a massive growth in adoption over the years. According to data from DeFi TVL aggregator, DeFiLlama, the decentralized exchange contributes a 64% share to the accumulated volume of all decentralized exchanges in the crypto space. In an attempt to upgrade its features so as to meet the ever-changing needs of the crypto community, Uniswap has taken to releasing several updated versions of its platform. The platform launched Uniswap v2 in May of 2020, and Uniswap v3 barely a year later, in March of 2021. As revealed by Uniswap Labs through a tweet, the platform hit the $1 trillion volume milestone in May of 2022 – an interesting feat to achieve in less than half a decade. Most of Uniswap’s trade volume – about 80% – was seen last year as the crypto scene saw a massive interest rate fueled by the bull market. Despite its meteoric growth, the platform still looks to expand, with this ongoing funding round serving as testament to that interest. Furthermore, Uniswap recently revealed that it plans to launch new products, as disclosed by COO Mary-Catherine Lader at the Messari Summit of 2022.
