Our View: Student Film Explores Dangers Of Excessive Gaming – The-Review https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/our-view-student-film-explores-dangers-of-excessive-gaming-the-review/ Congratulations to Michael Kanagy and the other students at West Branch High School for their success with the Friends4Friends campaign. Students on the school’s team brainstormed, wrote, filmed and edited a short film called “Unplugged,” which deals with the dangers of spending too much time playing video games.  According to a recent report, Kanagy’s performance as Max in the film won the coveted Best Actor award at the DeYor Performing Arts Center in Youngstown.  The efforts to research and create a film are a wonderful way to drive home certain lessons, not only in the crafts of persuasion and cinematography, but also about the inherent risks of the subject matter itself.  While video gaming has gotten a bad rap over the years, sometimes named as the sole cause for an alleged decline in the younger generation, it is true that an overindulgence in anything, even a hobby that is benign, can lead to problems.  We are reminded of a quote that, in various forms, can be traced to sources as diverse as the Bible and Oscar Wilde: “All things in moderation.” Wilde’s cynical contribution is that even moderation should be done in moderation.  Many of the earliest video game players are now old enough to share with their grandchildren the stories of how their own parents groused at them for playing video games.  Be that as it may, it is true that the sort of bleary-eyed addiction to games that leads some teens to stay up until the early hours of the morning, almost every morning, has deleterious effects on their social and academic lives.  If that message is driven home to some teens in trouble by watching their peers act it out, then “Unplugged” will have done its job. Kudos to all involved.  City should tackle ongoing skunk situation  At a recent Alliance City Council meeting, Councilman Jim Edwards asked if Alliance should hire a part-time critter control officer.  We suspect many residents would answer with a resounding yes.  Skunks may have only risen to the level of a city council problem recently, but longtime residents can assure their elected officials that the problem has been vexing − and pungent − for years.  There have been times when it seems the skunks outnumbered people in some neighborhoods, so strong is the olfactory assault that occurs when stepping outside.  A Review article notes that Michael Dreger, director of public safety and service, is exploring options and that he himself has had a pet sprayed by skunks. While we hate to hear that, it does serve to underline a pervasive problem.  Perhaps the city could contract with an outside company for a limited time rather than incur the expense of a regular employee. Or maybe the issue is big enough that a part-time employee could find plenty to do year-round.  Either way, here’s hoping for a quick resolution to a smelly situation.

Freind Column: Martha’s Vineyard Flight A Self-Inflicted Wound For DeSantis – The Delaware County Daily Times https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/freind-column-marthas-vineyard-flight-a-self-inflicted-wound-for-desantis-the-delaware-county-daily-times/ “We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them.” — President Andrew Shepherd (Michael Douglas) in “The American President.” If Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wants to be taken seriously, both in his reelection (where some polls show him leading, but not cracking 50%), and a potential White House bid, he would be wise to heed those words. As it is, he’s got ground to make up, given that he’s engulfed in an immigration firestorm that many are calling a heartless political stunt. Here’s a look: Using Floridians’ taxpayer money, DeSantis took it upon himself to charter planes and fly Venezuelan asylum-seekers in Texas to Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. Why? To call attention to the illegal immigration crisis on the southern border, stating: “Our message to them is we are not a sanctuary state, and it’s better to be able to go to a sanctuary jurisdiction … And yes, we will help facilitate that transport for you to be able to go to greener pastures.” Several things to consider: • Why say “our state” when the migrants weren’t even in Florida? Why is DeSantis involving himself in the affairs of a state a thousand miles away? Were there no migrants in the Sunshine State to whisk away? What business is it of his to fly migrants to New England? Isn’t that the purview of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott? Was it simply coincidence that DeSantis transported the migrants right under the nose of Abbott, perhaps his greatest potential 2024 rival? And how exactly are the migrants going to attend their immigration hearings when they are now 2,000 miles away? Inquiring minds want to know. Contrary to popular belief among some conservatives, Massachusetts is not a sanctuary state. Yes, it has several sanctuary cities (locales that curtail local law enforcement’s cooperation with federal authorities on immigration issues), but efforts to codify the Bay State as such have failed. For the record, this author has long opposed sanctuary cities, though the debate would largely become irrelevant if Congress passed comprehensive immigration reform. Unfortunately, neither side has made any meaningful effort to do so. It has been reported that Martha’s Vineyard officials were blindsided by the migrants’ arrival, which, for obvious reasons, created confusion and anxiety for the immigrants. Additionally, immigration attorneys representing the migrants allege that the Venezuelans were misled regarding the benefits they would receive upon landing. According to reports, the brochure given to the migrants outlined benefits for refugees, including housing, cash assistance and employment services. But here’s the problem — and it’s a big one, per those news reports: the Venezuelans are not classified as “refugees” under U.S. immigration law, and thus, not eligible for those benefits. Instead, they are deemed “asylum-seekers,” who receive comparatively few benefits. After applying for asylum (which can be done up to one year after arrival), immigrants are legally permitted to remain in the U.S. while awaiting a hearing. As a result of the flights, a class-action lawsuit has been filed against DeSantis and other Florida officials, claiming that the migrants were lured away under false pretenses. The question of whether the Venezuelans were misled pawns in a political stunt, or, as Mr. DeSantis claims, left Texas on a voluntary basis, is now headed for litigation. • Separately, Bexar County (Texas) Sheriff Javier Salazar opened a criminal investigation. At a press conference, he stated: “What infuriates me the most about this case is that here we have 48 people that are already on hard times, right? They are here legally, in our country. At that point, they have every right to be where they are. And I believe that they were preyed upon.” He added: “There’s a high possibility that the laws were broken here in the state of Texas in Bexar County.” Massachusetts Republican Governor Charlie Baker supports the investigation, stating: “I don’t know (if a crime was committed). It’s up to the authorities on the ground there to figure out what did and didn’t happen. I am very glad that the sheriff chose to open an investigation. I think that’s the right thing to do.” Whether the criminal investigation has merit remains to be seen, but it certainly isn’t a great political optic for a guy eyeing the White House. • And that brings us to the political aspects. Clearly, DeSantis is an intelligent man. But whether he is politically savvy is an open question. Up to now, the biggest selling point for DeSantis was that he is “Trump without the baggage,” a widely-appealing big-state Republican who pushes the conservative agenda with as much gusto as he does in taking on the establishment and steamrolling woke political correctness, yet absent the never-ending drama and legal woes of the former president. But given the controversy created by the migrant flights, the governor took a needless step backwards. First, he now must contend with the civil and criminal proceedings, the last thing he needs, particularly given Donald Trump’s legal issues. In other words, it’s kind of hard to “out-Trump” Trump when you incur the same kind of political baggage (lawsuits) that is weighing The Donald down. Sure, some of the base loves such red meat. And it’s true that the hard-core of both parties have outsized influence in determining presidential nominees. But there are better ways to win them over without alienating rank-and-file Republicans and the Great American Middle. From touting his successful track-record as governor to advocating commonsense policies that put America first (such as real immigration reform) to engaging people with a unifying and inspirational vision, DeSantis could have made his quest considerably easier by following such a path. But he didn’t. Instead, he lumped himself into the category of perceived Trumpian noncompassion. Let’s not forget that voters gave Trump a chance in 2016 not because they particularly liked him, but because they were tired of the Clinton family, viewing Hillary even more unfavorably than Donald. Over the next four years, Mr. Trump’s antics and personal insults, while thrilling a small part of the base, were overlooked, if not tolerated, because his policies provided economic and physical security. But after COVID upended the country, that patience evaporated. And the rest is history. The lesson: Americans don’t like arrogant and mean-spirited leaders, which is why, when given the choice, they will often choose a more dignified candidate, even when it may not be in their self-interest, as 2020 proved. The migrant debacle will likely not derail DeSantis, but now he must work that much harder to rid himself of the perception that he lacks empathy and compassion, especially for noncitizens. Do our immigration laws need sweeping reform? Absolutely, this isn’t the way. The asylum-seeking Venezuelans made a journey so perilous that few Americans could relate to its magnitude. And yet, despite the unimaginable dangers, they persevered simply for the chance to experience the world’s beacon of freedom: the United States of America. Did it not dawn on the DeSantis team that the vastly better storyline would have been to welcome those fleeing the brutal Venezuelan regime with open arms? In doing so, the governor could have commanded the international stage with a rousing speech that: • advocated ways to improve our immigration system. • demonstrated foreign policy expertise by unveiling a plan to deal with Venezuela • offered ideas to stem the flow of immigration by making life in Central and South America more prosperous. The result would have been a PR coup, with DeSantis taking a huge step toward ingratiating himself with a majority of Americans, not just the extreme base. Given that it will be a full two decades since Republicans last won the popular presidential vote, GOP leaders need to understand that the only way to build a coalition that can deliver in 2024 is to win the Great American Middle, comprised of Independents and suburban Republican-leaning women — the swing voters who decide every election. Many of those people are not happy with what they just saw. Here’s hoping a leader emerges who can change the narrative from the GOP being a hardline, anti-immigration party to one of compassionate conservatism. After all, the road to that goal runs through Washington, not Martha’s Vineyard. Chris Freind is an independent columnist and commentator whose column appears every week. ‘Let The Kids Be Kids And You Be A Kid Along With Them.’ Why You Should Take A Trip With Just Your Grandchildren. – Morningstar https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/let-the-kids-be-kids-and-you-be-a-kid-along-with-them-why-you-should-take-a-trip-with-just-your-grandchildren-morningstar/ By Jenny Wisniewski Imagine enjoying your relationship with your grandchildren in a way that might not be possible with their parents around This article is reprinted by permission from NextAvenue.org. When Margie Jordan took her first Disney (DIS) cruise alone with one of her five grandchildren, she jumped into every kid-centered activity her 12-year-old granddaughter desired — until it came time for the AquaDuck. The waterslide required passing through a sheet of cascading water at the end. She wasn’t thrilled with the idea of getting drenched and having to bother with her hair once again. After both her granddaughter and a Disney employee convinced her that she wouldn’t get “that wet,” Jordan, of Jacksonville, Florida, relented. “Well, I got soaked, and we both came down laughing hysterically,” Jordan said. And just like that, a memory was made. Vacations like Jordan’s are having a moment. While families continue to enjoy multigenerational vacations, which usually include children, parents and grandparents, duo-generational trips are gaining in popularity. This sort of trip might look like Jordan’s — a grandparent or set of grandparents traveling with one or more grandchildren. In other cases, older adults travel with their adult children, leaving the grandkids behind. Regardless of the combination of family members, it is clear that the separations and tragedies caused by the pandemic have fueled a desire to spend quality time bonding on a more intimate level. Also read: 8 rules to help your kids or grandkids succeed in college Disney cruising with tweens Jordan wasn’t done cruising. After the first trip with her granddaughter, her next oldest grandchild wanted to get in on the action, so Jordan embarked on her second Disney cruise, this time with both of the eldest grandchildren. “I tell you, the thing that was the best for me was getting to just spend time with them without their parents,” Jordan said. “We’re enjoying it so much that now, when we talk about taking another cruise — because the third grandson just turned 12, so now it’s his turn to join this little cruise thing that we’ve got going on — none of them, not one of them wants a parent to come,” Jordan said. The dynamics change when the trip is multigenerational, Jordan has come to realize. If her two daughters came along, her time and attention would be split. She can nurture her relationship with “her grands” in a way that would probably not be possible with their parents present. When not cruising with her grandkids, Jordan plans trips for others as a travel agent and the owner of Jordan Executive Travel Service, based in Jacksonville. She has advice for other grandparents planning a two-generation trip. First, she recommends waiting until the grandkids are 11 or 12. She also advises that grandparents consider their grandchildren’s interests and book the trip around that. “The trip is about them and all the things that make them amazing. So figure out what their interests are and book the trip around that,” Jordan said. “Let the kids be kids and you be a kid along with them.” You might like:6 lessons I learned from growing up with my grandparents — and great-grandparents Celebrating special occasions with teens Angie Rice, co-founder of Boutique Travel Advisors based in Paradise Valley, Arizona, is also seeing a significant increase in duo-generational travel. She agrees that waiting until kids reach their tween or teen years is important when planning a grandparent-grandchild vacation. “When the kids are little, it’s just a bigger undertaking for the grandparents to take smaller kids, and it’s also hard for the kids to be away from their parents,” Rice said. Giving the gift of travel to commemorate a birthday or graduation has become a part of the trend. Rice planned one trip for a set of grandparents who took their high school and college-age grandkids on a Mediterranean cruise followed up with several days in Rome. The trip was a joint graduation gift for the six cousins. In many cases, parents are unable to take time off from work for this type of extended trip. It also provides the grandparents more autonomy with their grandkids. Another reason for an increase in grandchildren — grandparent travel: the middle generation needs a break. “I think that they (the parents) were in their homes, raising kids 24/7 throughout the pandemic. It could be that the adult children are expressing the need (for a break) to their parents. So I almost think it is happening out of a combination of want and also perhaps need,” Rice said. Travel for landlubbers Aside from cruises, certain types of trips lend themselves to duo-generational travel. All-inclusive resorts in Mexico or the Caribbean are good options, Rice said. If travelers prefer to remain in the country, dude ranches are also conducive to this type of vacation. Flathead Lake Lodge in Bigfork, Montana is one such place. The all-inclusive, 2,000-acre dude ranch is located on the shores of Flathead Lake just 45 miles from Glacier National Park. It offers visitors a “historic, stuck-in-time kind of experience” that appeals to grandparents, said Chase Averill, general manager and third generation member of the family-owned business. In many cases, grandparents have memories of coming to the lodge as a child, or even with their own children. They want to share the experiences that they look back on so fondly with their grandchildren. In addition, Flathead Lake Lodge offers a vast array of activities. It is common for the kids to go in one direction and adults to go in another so that they can participate in the activities that suit their interests and abilities. The kids might ride horses, participate in water sports and mountain bike while their grandparents take a tour through the lodge’s elk preserve or sail aboard one of the historic sailboats, built in 1928 and 1929 for America’s Cup. At night, everyone comes together for a planned activity such as a steak fry or barn dance. Check out:Looking to unplug? Here are 12 peaceful towns great for going off the grid Travel for the adults A dude ranch like Flathead Lake Lodge also appeals to older adults traveling with their adult children. Averill saw a surge in this travel dynamic during the pandemic. During the summer of 2020, families that had traveled to Flathead Lake Lodge didn’t want to leave. They were able to easily maintain social distancing because of the expanse of the property and still enjoy their family members. For some, it became a retreat from a tumultuous world. A number of these travelers returned for a second trip in the fall, this time bringing their older parents and leaving the kids behind. Many have continued this pattern since. Phoebe Knight, a Missoula, Montana resident, has been vacationing at Flathead Lake Lodge with her sisters and their 93-year-old father, even longer. The tradition began with a stay at the lodge 18 years ago to celebrate his 75th birthday. Knight values this time with her father, who lives in Cos Cob, Connecticut, over 2,000 miles away. “My dad was a Navy man and loves to sail,” Knight said. “That’s his thing and the lodge has two beautiful antique sailboats that he can go out and sail. And while we’re sailing, he’s telling me stories of his time in the Navy. I just think it’s irreplaceable. It’s been absolutely amazing.” Rice plans trips for older adults and their adult children, too. Recently, she put together a trip for an older adult couple along with their two adult children and spouses. Leaving their minor children behind, they took a river cruise on the Douro River in Portugal. The grandmother frequently helps out with the grandchildren, and this was a chance for her adult children to say thank you and spend quality time alone. And where did the grandchildren stay while their parents and grandparents were cruising? Several stayed with the other set of grandparents. In a way, it became like two family reunions going on at the same time, Rice observed. Not everyone is so fortunate to have another set of grandparents available to help out. In cases like these, Rice recommends using opportunities like summer camp to plan a two-generation, adults-only trip. Don’t miss:Live it up now: The pleasure we get from spending declines as we age As for Margie Jordan, the Disney-cruising grandma, she’s decided it’s time to plan a trip with her two daughters, leaving the grandchildren behind. Like many families, their mind-set shifted with the pandemic. “I think the pandemic really kind of shook a lot of people up. People that were here a couple of years ago aren’t with us today,” Jordan said. “People are just not willing to let any more time pass without enjoying their family members in some kind of way. It’s the thing that you always wanted to do or that you thought you were going to do. And you say ‘we’re going to plan it one day.’ Well, one day is now.” Jenny Wisniewski is a freelance writer based in Milwaukee. She writes about elder care, the environment and travel. White House Seeks To Tackle Food Insecurity At First Hunger Conference Since 1969 – CNN https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/white-house-seeks-to-tackle-food-insecurity-at-first-hunger-conference-since-1969-cnn/ 02:42 – Source: CNN Food bank demand skyrockets as cash-strapped Americans seek help over inflation CNN  —  Groceries cost 13.5% more than they did a year ago. Nearly 25 million adults live in households where there isn’t always enough to eat. Some 40% of food banks saw increased demand this summer. At a time when the affordability of food is in the spotlight, the Biden administration is hosting a White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health on Wednesday with the goal of combating food insecurity and diet-related diseases. Overall, food insecurity has declined since former President Richard Nixon convened the first and only White House conference on food, nutrition and health in 1969, which led to nationwide expansions of the food stamp and school meals programs and the creation of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, known as WIC, among other changes. General economic growth and the reduction in poverty have also contributed to the improvements in food security in recent decades. However, the Covid-19 pandemic and soaring inflation have increased the attention paid to food insecurity in the US over the past two years. The Biden administration released a 44-page playbook on Tuesday aimed at the “bold goal” of ending hunger by 2030 and increasing healthy eating and physical activity to reduce diet-related diseases. Among the key proposals: expand free school meals to 9 million more children by 2032; allow more people to qualify for food stamps; broaden the Summer Expanded Benefit Transfer program to more kids; increase funding for nutrition programs for senior citizens; and improve transportation to and from grocery stores and farmer’s markets, among other initiatives. Many of the efforts would need approval from Congress. President Joe Biden is expected to announce at the conference more than $8 billion in private and public sector commitments as part of the administration’s call to action. More than 100 organizations are participating, including hospitals and health care associations, tech companies, philanthropies and the food industry. At least $2.5 billion will be invested in start-up companies that are focused on solutions to hunger and food insecurity, according to the White House. More than $4 billion will be dedicated toward philanthropic efforts to improve access to nutritious food, promote healthy choices and increase physical activity. Congress has poured billions into special pandemic assistance programs aimed at enabling struggling Americans to have enough food to feed themselves and their families – even as millions of jobs were lost in 2020. “That’s why it’s so consequential that at the onset of the Covid-19 recession, the combination of fiscal support to households – whether it is from the economic impact payments, unemployment insurance, refundable tax credits, enhanced SNAP benefits or pandemic EBT – all combined to prevent an increase in food insecurity over the past two years,” said Lauren Bauer, a fellow in economic studies at the Brookings Institution. The pandemic aid, particularly a temporary enhancement to the child tax credit, helped keep kids fed last year, Bauer and anti-hunger advocates maintain. Food insecurity among children fell in 2021, reversing a spike during the first year of the pandemic, according to a recent US Department of Agriculture report. Some 6.2% of households with children were unable at times to provide adequate, nutritious food for their kids last year, compared with 7.6% in 2020, the report found. Last year’s rate was not significantly different than the 2019 share. And the prevalence of food insecurity in the families who have kids dropped to 12.5% last year, the lowest since at least 1998, the earliest year that comparable records exist. But elderly Americans living alone and childless households both experienced an increase in food insecurity last year, the report found. Overall, the share of households contending with food insecurity remained statistically the same in 2021 as the year before. This lack of improvement in general food insecurity despite the surge in federal spending on food stamps, formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, is a red flag for Angela Rachidi, senior fellow in poverty studies at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank. “When the solution is always ‘let’s just spend more on SNAP or spend more on school lunch or WIC,’ I think that that’s not always the best use of federal dollars,” she said. Rachidi would like to see more of an emphasis on nutrition and healthy eating, which are among the pillars of the White House conference. “Many more people in the US die from diet-related disease than die from hunger,” she said, noting the health problems caused by obesity, diabetes and other conditions. The pandemic aid that helped keep Americans afloat has largely been exhausted, and Congress has shown little appetite to dole out more assistance – even as high inflation is squeezing many families. The share of people who say they live in households where there was either sometimes or often not enough to eat in the last seven days has climbed to 11.5%, according to the most recent US Census Bureau Household Pulse Survey conducted in late July and early August. That’s up from the 10.2% recorded by the survey in late December and early January, just after the final monthly child tax credit payment was distributed. The share had been even lower in the late summer and early fall of 2021, when the monthly installments were being sent. Meanwhile, shopping in the supermarket is taking a bigger bite out of people’s wallets. Egg prices have skyrocketed nearly 40% over the past year, while flour is 23% costlier. Milk and bread are up 17% and 16% respectively, while chicken is nearly 17% more expensive. Starting next month, it will be a little easier for those in the food stamp program to afford groceries because the annual inflation adjustment will kick in. Beneficiaries will see an increase in benefits of 12%, or an average of $26 per person, per month. This comes on top of last year’s revision to the Thrifty Food Plan, upon which benefits are based, which raised the average monthly payment by $36 per person. Still, the upward march in prices has driven more people to food pantries, which are also struggling to stock the shelves amid higher prices. Some 40% of food banks reported seeing an increase in the number of people served in July compared with June, according to a survey conducted by Feeding America, which has more than 60,000 food pantries, meal programs and partner agencies in its network. The average increase was about 10% more people. Another 40% said demand remained about level. Many food pantries don’t have the resources to meet this increased demand, said Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, Feeding America’s CEO, noting that she’s seen sites with nearly empty shelves but long lines out the door. The network provided 1.4 billion fewer meals in the fiscal year ending June 30 than the year before. The USDA announced earlier this month that it will provide nearly $1.5 billion in additional funding for emergency food assistance, which will help alleviate the supply shortages at food banks and pantries. However, Feeding America feels more should be done. It recently surveyed nearly 36,000 people for their recommendations to end hunger. Many felt that food stamp benefits should be increased and eligibility should be expanded. Nearly half felt their communities need more food pantries, grocery stores and fresh food. The recent infusion of federal funds will help pantries distribute more food, though it doesn’t completely close the gap. And it will take time for the supplies to arrive, Babineaux-Fontenot said. “Today, people are going to be looking for ways to feed themselves and their family, and there will be scarce resources for them to do that,” she said.

D&E Soccer Team Rises To No. 1 In The Nation – The Inter-Mountain https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/de-soccer-team-rises-to-no-1-in-the-nation-the-inter-mountain/ KANSAS CITY, Missouri — The Davis & Elkins men’s soccer team is riding a seven-win unbeaten streak so far this season and after garnering national attention last season, head coach Dean Johnson’s Senators are quickly gaining respect in their 2022 campaign. Ranked third a week prior, D&E vaulted ahead of California State University-Los Angeles and Franklin Pierce University in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 National Poll following a Sunday night 1-0 win over Frostburg State University. Previously unbeaten and last year’s National Champion, Cal State LA fell from the number one ranking to seventh in the poll following a Sunday night loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills. Cal State LA now stands at 7-1-0. Franklin Pierce, now 10-0-1, remains in second in this week’s poll following a 0-0 draw with Le Moyne and a 4-0 win over New Haven. D&E has outscored opponents 25-1 so far this season. The Senators lead all of NCAA Division II in won-lost percentage, scoring offense, points per game, goals against average, save percentage, and shutout percentage. The Senators average 3.57 goals per game, 10.00 points per game, a 0.923 save percentage, and a 0.857 shutout percentage. Opposing teams have managed a mere 0.143 goals per game against the Senators on average. With a wealth of talent on this year’s squad, D&E has utilized their balance and been able to spread the scoring around to several players. Five different players are tied for the lead in goals scored with three apiece. While Daniel Cerezo, Kevin Zapata, Manuel Castrejon, Christhian Bosquez, and Davide Materazzi have each led the team thus far in goals scored, a number of players remain from last year’s all-Mountain East Conference team, including MEC Defensive Player-of-the-Year Alex Estrada-Avila. Castrejon and Soshi Fujioka lead D&E with four assists each and goalkeeper Beltran Fernandez leads the Senators with eleven saves and five shutouts. The Senators host Wheeling University at 7 p.m. today for a MEC matchup. Today’s breaking news and more in your inbox

The Real-World Tech That Smooths Payments In The Metaverse – PYMNTS.com https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/the-real-world-tech-that-smooths-payments-in-the-metaverse-pymnts-com/ The new eCommerce landscape is complex and ever evolving: Businesses seeking to provide their customers with new virtual spaces like gaming environments have to adapt their payments management strategies to new technical and user experience challenges. “Navigating The New eCommerce Landscape: Modernizing Payments For Marketplaces, Gaming, The Metaverse And Beyond,” a PYMNTS and Citi collaboration, examines the challenges facing growing global businesses as the age of the metaverse dawns. The New eCommerce Challenge  As businesses adapt to an “eCommerce anywhere” age, they are learning that new virtual spaces like gaming platforms and the metaverse require new ways of thinking about payments and user experience. Myriad challenges face global technology, communications and eGaming companies — ranging from managing multicurrency payments efficiently to ensuring universal know-your-customer (KYC) and know-your-business (KYB) compliance — and these difficulties often increase in complexity as businesses scale. According to the report, challenges become even more burdensome as businesses grow, making rapid growth another risk organizations must manage. As these organizations attempt to meet consumers’ demand for modern shopping features, such as fast payments and digital asset downloads, the technical and security burdens involved often complicate their efforts to create, monitor and evolve seamless user experiences. Risk Evolves With Technology and Business Growth Innovation always involves risk, and the new eCommerce landscape is no exception. The old challenges — security and user experience — are still there, but the strategies used to solve these problems must evolve at the same time. That means organizations are managing innovation and growth with little guidance on how to adapt to new issues while trying to solve old problems. To remove friction from payment experiences for creators, service providers and customers alike, organizations must manage elements ranging from multicurrency payment issues to user onboarding — all while monitoring transactions for suspicious activity. Fraud is a risk, as are money laundering and identity theft. That means true visibility across all transactions is essential to protect contractors, consumers and the organization. Transparency is not just key to managing new payments strategies in new virtual spaces but critical to maintaining business growth over time. An open, honest conversation about legacy payments strategies and the tools that they rely upon, as well as which practices to modernize, is essential for businesses seeking to sustain growth in the new eCommerce sector. Organizations, according to the report, should opt for an objective review of payments strategies and processes. It recommends that organizations look for vulnerabilities to noncompliance that may increase at scale, such as poor onboarding processes for new clients or contractors that fall short of KYC and KYB standards at any touchpoint and that they seek out a solution that offers global compliance monitoring in tandem with payments processing. “Navigating The New eCommerce Landscape: Modernizing Payments For Marketplaces, Gaming, The Metaverse And Beyond” also details: Why building a metaverse-ready payments strategy requires the right technology. How legacy payments strategies require an audit to be scalable for the new eCommerce era. How to handle the reality that the metaverse has the same basic user experience requirements as legacy eCommerce — but consumers will always expect more as technology advances. Here’s Why OPPO Reno8 Z 5G Doesn’t Disappoint – Philstar.com https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/heres-why-oppo-reno8-z-5g-doesnt-disappoint-philstar-com/ Jap Tobias – Philstar.com September 28, 2022 | 3:12pm Reno8 Z 5G delivers stellar portraits, spectacular design and smooth performance MANILA, Philippines — Smart device brand OPPO has recently unveiled its Reno8 Series 5G in the Philippines, featuring the Reno8 5G and Reno8 Z 5G. Both come equipped with OPPO’s flagship portrait system that allows users to capture life’s moments from day to night. Officially priced at P19,990, the OPPO Reno8 Z 5G is the more budget-friendly option in the Reno8 Series 5G lineup, ideally meant for casual users who love a phone that’s rich in style and creative capabilities.  Philstar.com has had some time with the OPPO Reno8 Z 5G, and here’s our experience with the device. First impression: Sleek and sparkling The OPPO Reno8 Z 5G gets your attention right off the bat with its tasty-looking rear design that has a smooth, sandblasted feeling with a sparkling, glittery look.  The device we had was in Dawnlight Gold, which features a seamless gradient coating of different tones of yellow, cyan, purple and gold—giving off a beautiful rainbow holographic effect when light hits the device from different angles.  In terms of its sides, the device sports a metallic look, complemented by curved corners that make the device look sleek. Following what OPPO calls an “ultra slim retro design,” the Reno8 Z 5G feels light and easy to grip with its thinness of only approximately 7.66mm and weight of 181g. A thoughtful addition to the phone’s sparkling design is the OPPO Dual Orbit Lights. Tucked subtly beneath the camera modules, these ring-shaped prisms light up or blink in different scenarios, such as when the device charges, running games, or when there’s an unread notification.  Portrait Expert for a reason Day and night photos captured using OPPO Ren8 Z 5G’s camera with AI Scene enhancement feature. Philstar.com/Jap Tobias Dubbed as a “Portrait Expert” the OPPO Reno8 Z 5G is made to deliver captivating portraits at any time of the day.  The device sports a 64MP AI Triple Rear Camera with a 16MP front camera. It is integrated with powerful portrait shooting features, such as the Bokeh Flare Portrait to capture portrait images with bokeh light spots, the Selfie HDR for clear selfies in low-lighted surroundings, and many more. We brought the device to different environments to test out the OPPO Reno8 Z 5G’s lenses, and as non-photography pros, we’ve also kept the phone’s AI scene enhancement feature on.  Front camera Bokeh Portrait and HDR Philstar.com/Jap Tobias While we do miss capturing wide shots, our photography experience with the device’s main cam is quite effortless. Images taken in daylight are consistently sharp without the problem of oversaturated colors, while night photos were also vibrant colors with minimal noise. Thanks to the device’s sensors and AI enhancement, it chooses the right settings to use. The phone’s front camera also delivers clear selfies during the daytime or night, made possible by Selfie HDR which preserves features of faces and backgrounds even in lowlight scenarios. Now let’s talk about the most promising thing in this device: the Portrait Mode.  Rear camera Bokeh Portrait in daylight and lowlight Philstar.com/Jap Tobias In our experience, the portrait mode, as expected, did a great job in producing DSLR-like photos with smoothly blurred backgrounds and creamy bokeh. Hair, shirt and face details all naturally transition naturally to the background that makes up for a perfect portrait.  The OPPO Reno8 Z 5G is also thoughtful enough to add more features like AI Portrait Retouching, AI Pallets and AI Color Portrait, among others.  In the past years, OPPO has consistently improved its imaging capabilities, and now they have shown what can be achieved when AI algorithms work well with hardware—clear photos and superb portraits Phone made simple and smooth The OPPO Reno8 Z 5G is undeniably a pretty straightforward mid-range device. From its display down to its processor, the phone was simply made to deliver where it matters.  The device provides an immersive enough viewing experience with its 90.8% screen-to-body ratio and 6.4” AMOLED display that delivers punchy visuals and rich colors.  The device also has a 60Hz refresh rate, which others may not find enough, but honestly, there’s very little to complain about with OPPO Reno8 Z 5G’s screen if you’re a casual user whose screen activities usually revolve around light games and streaming apps.  Having played Moba and FPS games, the device is capable of providing a stable and smooth gaming experience. This is probably because the OPPO Reno8 Z 5G runs with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 5G Mobile Platform, packed with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of ROM and a memory that is even expandable up to 1TB—a build that for most cases is more than enough.  The OPPO Reno8 Z 5G also packs a 4,500mAh battery that takes up only around an hour to fully charge through its 33W SUPERVOOC flash-charging feature, making this device perfect for go-getters.  Putting the device into hours of use, we’ve also noticed that the OPPO Reno8 Z 5G remained impressively cool, which it owes to the upgraded 6-Layered Multi-Cooling System under its hood.  Now making the overall OPPO Reno8 Z 5G experience easy is the fact the device runs on ColorOS 12.1, which provides users with a more personalized and convenient experience with features like anti-peeping notifications, Air Gestures and Omoji avatars.  The overall experience we’ve had with the OPPO Reno8 Z 5G was simple, easy and smooth. This, we believe, is because of the many small pieces in this device that complement each other perfectly, which ultimately makes up for a cohesive overall user experience.  Simply put, the OPPO Reno8 Z 5G is a device that looks good and works well. If you’re one who targets an eye-catching phone that has some amazing photography performance under its sleeve, then this device is a solid choice. The OPPO Reno8 Z 5G and Reno8 5G are now available at OPPO Brand Stores, online via Shopee and Lazada, and through plans offered by Smart and Globe.  OPPO Reno8 Z 5G is available via Smart Signature Device Plan 999! You will also get 5GB data, Unli AllNet Calls and Texts and 50 minutes PLDT calls by just adding P200 per month with one-time cash out of P2,500. For Globe subscribers, OPPO Reno8 Z 5G is available for free with GPlan 1799 with 13GB all-access data, unli all-net text, calls and calls to landline. Industry Offers Cautious Welcome To EUs Landmark Crypto Law MiCA CoinDesk

Industry Offers Cautious Welcome To EU’s Landmark Crypto Law MiCA – CoinDesk https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/industry-offers-cautious-welcome-to-eus-landmark-crypto-law-mica-coindesk/ Jack Schickler is a CoinDesk reporter focused on crypto regulations, based in Brussels, Belgium. He doesn’t own any crypto. The European Union’s Markets in Crypto Assets Regulation (MiCA) could prove transformative, CoinDesk has been told, even if some in the industry query whether it will meet its goals of offering a single, clear rulebook for the 27-nation bloc. MiCA would require crypto companies to register with the authorities, to hold sufficient capital to steady stablecoins and to offer clear and fair information to budding investors – and its text is, after many years, now almost finalized. The world of crypto moves faster than legislators do, and this law has had quite the journey. Originally designed to regulate crypto actors like issuers and wallet providers in an era where initial coin offerings, including scams, were rife, the draft bill evolved alongside innovations in the sector. Between conception and completion, new provisions were inserted or contemplated to deal with the defunct Facebook-backed currency project Libra, later renamed Diem; the energy use of bitcoin mining; the rise of non-fungible tokens (NFTs); decentralized finance (DeFi); and algorithmic stablecoins like the now-doomed terraUSD. It’s still not settled. A draft that leaked last week was viewed by some negotiators as the final version – but, at the last minute, it was opposed for not sticking to the political deal struck at the end of June. (While negotiations are being held in secret, three sources briefed on the talks told CoinDesk that objections came from France; one of them said countries other than France were also involved, but declined to say which.) The law’s architects are still keen to trumpet its benefits – notably, allowing a single framework under which companies can operate across the bloc of 500 million consumers. “Legal certainty was one of the main reasons why we need MiCA,” said Stefan Berger, the lawmaker who negotiated the law for the European Parliament, in a written interview. “We now have a legal framework that can be relied on as an investor but also as an issuer and offeror … order is created in the Wild West of the crypto world.” By and large, the industry seems to agree with his rosy assessment. The law is overall positive, Marina Markezic, executive director of the European Crypto Initiative, told CoinDesk in an online interview. Having the new law “is a drastic change” from the status quo, she said, referring to “the new world after MiCA” in which the crypto community will need to “grow up” and consider legal compliance as they develop projects. “Overall, I would say, MiCA is positive,” she added. “It’s unifying Europe, and we’re going to have mostly the same rules for all service providers.” But that high-level view masks plenty of detailed gripes. While a boon for crypto services such as wallet providers, lawmakers haven’t quite achieved their vision of legal clarity for everyone – particularly in newer areas of Web3 technology, CoinDesk was told. “The NFTs bit [of the law] is unnecessarily complicated,” Blockchain for Europe’s Robert Kopitsch said in an online interview. “Depending on who you ask, you get a different answer, which is never a good thing.” EU governments wanted NFTs to be exempted from the regulation entirely – but lawmakers at the European Parliament argued that, in reality, many so-called NFTs on the market were in fact traded like financial products, and capable of similar kinds of mis-selling and market abuse. The current legal compromise means any assets issued as part of a series will likely be deemed fungible, meaning that in practice the bulk of self-proclaimed NFTs will be caught by the regulation. Worse still, it could mean individual national enforcers could take inconsistent views about whether a particular asset needs to issue a white paper. In other areas, like caps on the use of non-euro stablecoins – introduced by governments panicking that a Libra-style payment system could usurp their own currency – the final compromise text seems to have found better favor. A compromise deal that would see the use of many stablecoins limited to 1 million transactions per day is “quite a good end result,” because it will only capture real-world payments rather than trading activity, Patrick Hansen, Crypto Venture Advisor at Presight Capital, told CoinDesk in an online interview. That view may still change, since the scope of the cap is what France objected to. But Kopitsch argues that, for stablecoins not tied to a fiat currency, the conditions attached are so arduous as to not make them worth pursuing. “Let’s assume you have a gold-pegged stablecoin, and it has to be redeemable at all times at the purchase price – that’s impossible, nobody will issue such a token,” Kopitsch said. Those passing the law “just should have been straight and said we’ll just ban anything that looks like it, instead of making it pretty much impossible to launch.” Compared to Markezic, Hansen is less fulsome about the impact MiCA will have – but even he reckons there will be wider global repercussions. “I don’t think it ushers in a new era of crypto markets overall,” Hansen said, but he added that he “wouldn’t be surprised to see that piece of regulation like Mica having a lot of influence around the world,” given the desire to avoid creating loopholes via regulatory divergence. That view appears shared by Binance boss Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, who recently characterized the law as a global standard for others to copy – and by Berger himself. “There is a lot of international interest in MiCA coming from my U.S. colleagues,” said Berger, who recently visited New York City. “It would be desirable if in the future we had not only a European MiCA, but a global MiCA.” Sandali Handagama contributed reporting. Asked if he was concerned about the spillover effects of weaker economies elsewhere on the United States, Deese mentioned Europe, Britain and China, and said the Biden administration was paying “a lot of attention” to pockets of “particular weakness” in the global growth trajectory. Italian Space Agency Releases LICIACube Images Of DART Crash – The Indian Express https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/italian-space-agency-releases-liciacube-images-of-dart-crash-the-indian-express/ Humanity’s first planetary defence test mission got off to a good start when NASA’s DART spacecraft successfully crashed into the asteroid Dimorphos in a planned collision at 4.44 AM IST on September 27. Now, the Italian Space Agency has released images of the collision captured by its LICIACube a few minutes after the collision. Although only three photos were released by the Italian Space Agency, more photos could be released in the coming days. The Italian Space Agency’s LICIACube took this image minutes after DART’s crash with Dimorphos. The bigger asteroid in the picture is Didymos. (Image credit: ASI/NASA) The purpose of NASA’s DART mission is to test whether a “kinetic transfer” method of asteroid mitigation can be a viable strategy in case an asteroid threatens the Earth. The method refers to using the impact of a massive object like a spacecraft to divert asteroids. DART’s crash should have nudged Dimorphos slightly and subtly changed its orbit around Didymos, the larger asteroid in the binary system. The Italian Space Agency’s LICIACube took this image minutes after DART’s crash with Dimorphos. The bigger asteroid in the picture is Didymos. (Image credit: ASI/NASA) Currently, the Didymos binary system, which hosts Dimorphos, is within less than 11 million kilometres of Earth and dozens of telescopes stationed across the world are trained at the system to observe it. In the coming weeks, scientists will precisely measure the orbital change that happened to Dimorphos to understand how effectively DART deflected the asteroid. Dimorphos does not really present a threat to the Earth but scientists will compare the data from DART’s crash with it to the data from the many computer-generated to ascertain whether this kinetic impactor method is an effective mitigation strategy.

Massachusetts Gaming Commission – SouthCoastToday.com https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/massachusetts-gaming-commission-southcoasttoday-com/ Amanda Cappelli  |  BU Statehouse intern BOSTON — Mobile sports bettors could be faced with financial risks if they wager with temporarily licensed operators, a challenge those operators offered opinions and solutions for at the Massachusetts Gaming Commission roundtable last week. Gov. Charlie Baker signed sports betting into law in August, and now the MGC is tasked with how to implement it. The law allows seven operators to have five-year licenses and an unlimited number of temporary licenses, which exist for up to a year. After that year, consumers might still have open bets, money in their accounts, and personal information saved with the operator. One of the primary risks consumers in Massachusetts could face is outstanding player balances when an unlimited number of operators have to shut down after a year or less. Another risk is personally identifiable information existing in the revoked operator’s systems. Some companies shared their solutions for these consumer concerns. Operators like Betr outlined some consumer protection strategies if several temporary operators shut down at once, like limiting credit card usage. Ashwin Krishnan, head of legal, said that Betr will employ deposit limits for under 25-year-olds and impose affordability checks, which “allow for wager limits and, or, deposit limits based on the consumer.” Luis Anthony Gaud, CEO of G3 Esports, said in a statement that there would likely be consumer confusion and other issues if the temporary licenses simultaneously end. “The process of what to do with PII data in the event of business closure needs to be clearly defined by regulators,” he said. Cast a vote: Vote for the Standard-Times High School Girls Player of the Week for Sept. 19-25 Four-stage plan to protect consumers Victory Game Challenge Inc. suggested a four-stage plan to ensure consumer protection where consumers can transfer their wagers to the Category 3 operators from the temporary ones, highlighting California’s approach. The seven operators with long-term licensing are in Category 3. Which operators will be Category 3 versus temporary licensees has not been determined yet. “Temporary licensees will stop their sportsbooks but will continue running by simply forwarding wagers to regular licenses if consumers still want to use their platform,” they said in a statement. Cast a vote: Defense dominates with interceptions galore; Vote for the Football Player of the Week Several operators also offered their support for a staggered mobile gaming launch which means businesses could start mobile operations at different times from each other and from retail locations like a casino. However, DraftKings supports a simultaneous launch where all sports betting companies begin operation at the same time. The next meeting will hear from the public on regulatory amendments Thursday, Sept. 29.
