According to the report, the pandemic caused the split – the cities that were doing well were those that focused on vacations, while those focused on business meetings or conventions fell behind. “People will pay a lot for leisure travel, especially in traditional leisure destinations,” Marlowe said in an interview. “Meanwhile, on the commercial travel side, now that meetings can be done via Zoom and people are less excited to travel to certain kinds of destinations, you actually have the opposite.” Airbnb has seen more trips and longer stays in the past few months, even as inflation wreaked havoc, PYMNTS wrote. It was rookie cornerback Sauce Gardner who wore the cheesehead, a gift from an ecstatic Jets fan in the crowd. As he strutted off the field and to the tunnel — the wrong tunnel, as it turned out — Gardner was caught from behind, so to speak, by Allen Lazard. The Packers’ wide receiver knocked Gardner’s block (of cheese) off, creating a moment that went viral on social media. “I’m definitely never going to forget this moment,” Gardner said, laughing at his locker. “It’s a tribute to the Jets fans. They put in on my head, the Jets fans. I just had to take it and run with it.” Lazard took it well, complimenting Gardner on his game and his nickname (“Sauce, that’s a cool name”) and insisting he wasn’t bothered by the rookie’s gesture. “It’s just a little competitive spirit,” Lazard said. “Nothing too harmful in that aspect or anything. Isaiah Thomas Palomo, 20, and Hollisha Janay-Lastar Nealy, 24, were arrested Friday evening, as stated in a press conferce by Bexar County Sheriff Sheriff Javier Salazar. Authorities made the arrests after they “intercepted phone calls between Nealy and an inmate, 24-year-old Deandre Ross, who were planning to meet up with the off-duty deputy to exchange drugs,” said KSAT. Nealy met with the former probation deputy in the parking of after she left her job. Once they met, BCSO Special Operations team stopped the truck Palomo was driving. Palomo proceeded to attempt to hide the cocaine stash in paperwork in his car. Palomo was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance. Nealy was arrested at her place of work and charged with intent to deliver. According to Salazar, Ross will also be charged with additional charges to his current ones. Kroger has announced plans to buy Albertsons in a deal it says totals nearly $25 billion. The deal, expected to close in 2024, would bring together two of the largest grocery chains in the country, in addition to creating one of the nation’s largest private employers. Together, the stores total about 710,000 employees, most of which are unionized across the nearly 5,000 combined grocery stores, according to the company. The combined company would also control 66 distribution centers, 52 manufacturing plants, almost 4,000 pharmacies, and more than 2,000 fuel centers. Kroger and Albertsons, recognizable grocery names in their own right, operate many other stores. The group of stores under the Kroger umbrella includes Ralphs, Harris Teeter, Dillons, Fred Meyer, and others. Meanwhile, Albertsons stores include Safeway and Vons. For context, Amazon’s acquisition of Whole Foods was valued at $13.7 billion back in 2017. This merger would make Kroger the second largest grocery retailer in the US with a 13.5% market share, trailing only Walmart’s 15.5%, per CNN. “This merger advances our commitment to build a more equitable and sustainable food system by expanding our footprint into new geographies to serve more of America with fresh and affordable food and accelerates our position as a more compelling alternative to larger and non-union competitors,” Rodney McMullen, Kroger CEO, said in a statement. Consolidations have become familiar across the US in recent years. CNN suggests that the massive scale of the combined companies would provide the buying equity capable of fending off other big retailers like Amazon and Walmart. CNN also cites increased competition from discount and warehouse retailers like Dollar General, Aldi, and Costco. Though, there are many who believe the merger would be bad for consumers.  The deal is a long way from finished, and industry experts have said that there are large hurdles to clear with regard to antitrust security. Some unions, Democrats, and others have come out against the deal, including Senator Bernie Sanders, who called it an “absolute disaster.” They argue prices could ultimately rise due to the merger and that competition will be driven out of some markets. “There is no reason to allow two of the biggest supermarket chains in the country to merge–especially with food prices already soaring,” said Sarah Miller, Executive Director of the American Economic Liberties Project, an anti-monopoly organization. “With 60% of grocery sales concentrated among just 5 national chains, a Kroger-Albertons deal would squeeze consumers already struggling to afford food, crush workers fighting for fair wages, and destroy independent, community stores. Distraught families whose loved ones died in Air France’s worst-ever crash have shouted down the CEOs of the airline and of planemaker Airbus as the two companies go on trial on manslaughter charges in Paris over the 2009 crash. The flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris in 2009 plunged into the Atlantic amid thunderstorms. The crash killed all 228 people aboard and led to changes in air safety regulations. New Zealand’s government is proposing a tax on the greenhouse gasses that farm animals make from burping and peeing as part of a plan to tackle climate change. Drake finished with 119 yards and a TD on just 10 carries, clearly outplaying Dobbins (15 yards on seven carries)), who reportedly aggravated his knee injury. This could be little more than a one-week fluke, but if Dobbins misses time and Drake can establish himself as a legit option in Baltimore’s run-heavy offense, then he’ll continue to have flex value. That’s especially true next week in a favorable matchup against Cleveland’s porous run defense. 2 Deon Jackson, RB, Colts With Jonathan Taylor (ankle) and Nyheim Hines (concussion) once again out, Jackson led the way in the Colts’ backfield in Week 7. Hines figures to be back in Week 7 against the Titans, but Taylor might once again be out. If he is, it’s reasonable to expect Jackson, if healthy, to handle the bulk of the carries and get a decent amount of targets. He’s worth stashing just in case Taylor continues to miss time, but the quad injury that forced Jackson to exit early on Sunday will need to be monitored. 3 Caleb Huntley, RB, Falcons Huntley operated the Falcons’ lead back most of Week 6, finishing with 59 yards on 16 carries. The average isn’t great, but if Huntley is going to continue to get the bulk of the Falcons’ carries over Tyler Allgeier (15 carries, 51 yards), who tacked on several touches late when Atlanta was trying to run out the clock, then he’ll have value as long as Cordarrelle Patterson (knee) is out. Consider Huntley a volume-based flex in a tough matchup next week against Cincinnati. 4 Rondale Moore, WR, Cardinals Moore has seen a decent amount of targets when on the field this season (23 in three games), and even though those could decrease with the return of DeAndre Hopkins in Week 7, Moore still has big-play potential against a banged-up Saints defense that entered Week 6 allowing the ninth-most fantasy points to WRs before getting torched by Ja’Marr Chase and the Bengals. If Marquise Brown (ankle) is out, Moore is a virtual must-start. 5 Wan’Dale Robinson, WR, Giants Playing in his first game since Week 1, Robinson (knee) made his presence felt, catching three-of-four targets for 37 yards and a TD. Given how banged-up and uninspiring New York’s receiving corps is, Robinson has a real chance to take over as the Giants’ No. 1 or 2 receiver. He has a below-average matchup next week against Jacksonville, but his versatile skill set gives him upside every week. The rookie wide receiver has emerged as the Colts’ No. 2 after seeing an uptick in targets and offensive snaps over the past few weeks. He continued his hot play by catching three-of-seven targets for 49 yards and a TD against the Jaguars, and with a Week 7 matchup against a Titans defense allowing third-most fantasy points to WRs, the good times should keep rolling. 7 Tyquan Thornton, WR, Patriots In just his second career game, Thornton made waves by catching four-of-five targets for 37 yards and a TD and adding another 16 yards and a score on three carries. The Pats have a bunch of similar receivers, so it’s tough to expect Thornton to be consistent, but the versatile, rookie speedster has big-play potential every week. You won’t start him next week against Chicago, but he’s worth stashing on deep-league rosters. 8 Tre’Quan Smith, WR, Saints With Chris Olave (concussion), Michael Thomas (toe), and Jarvis Landry (ankle) all out, Smith stepped up as New Orleans’ leading receiver in Week 6, catching all three targets for 43 yards and a TD. It was his second game with over 10 fantasy points in New Orleans’ past four contests, and if either Olave or Thomas is out for Thursday night’s favorable matchup in Arizona, Smith has WR3 upside.  9 Mike Boone, RB, Broncos There’s no doubt Melvin Gordon operated as the “lead back” for the Broncos in Week 5, as he played 56 percent of snaps and handled 18 touches (15 carries, three catches). Boone was still plenty involved, though, playing 41 percent of snaps and touching the ball 10 times (seven carries, three catches). Boone totaled 85 yards and averaged an impressive 5.4 yards per carry, which is in line with his career mark (5.6), so there’s still a lot of upside here. The big worry is Latavius Murray, who was inactive on Thursday after playing in London the previous Sunday with the Saints, will take some of Boone’s touches in the future. As of right now, though, Boone is a must-have in 12-league teams. He’s an injury (or fumble) away from starting, and he can be a flex with his current role. 10 Josh Reynolds, WR, Lions Reynolds posted four-straight games with at least 12.8 PPR points leading up to Detroit’s bye, so despite a tough Week 7 matchup against Dallas, Reynolds should be on fantasy radars. A healthy DJ Chark (ankle) and D’Andre Swift (ankle) will eat into Reynolds’ opportunities, but he’s been the Lions’ No. 2 receiver so far this year. Everyone below this point is a streamer recommendation for Week 7: 12 Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, 49ers Garoppolo has a favorable matchup in Week 7 against a Kansas City defense that has struggled against the pass this season. Entering Week 6, the Chiefs were allowing the fourth-most fantasy points to QBs. With Josh Allen and Jalen Hurts on a bye week, Garoppolo is a solid streaming option with his plethora of weapons at the skill positions. 13 Jameis Winston, QB, Saints if healthy, Winston (back) is another solid streaming option for Week 7. A matchup against the Cardinals, who entered Week 6 allowing the ninth-most fantasy points to QBs, can help him get on track assuming he has at least one of Chris Olave (concussion) or Michael Thomas (toe). 14 Davis Mills, QB, Texans Mills is on the same tier as Pickett if you are looking for a streaming quarterback in Week 7. The second-year quarterback has been up and down this season but could bounce back off the bye against the Raiders. Entering into Week 6, the Raiders were allowing the most fantasy points QBs, so Mills has a solid floor and better-than-usual ceiling this week. 15 Kenny Pickett/Mitchell Trubisky, QB, Steelers Whoever gets the start against Miami in Week 7 has value. Pickett (concussion) would be our preferred option against a Dolphins’ defense that entered Week 6 allowing the fifth-most fantasy points to QBs, but Trubisky showed last week (144 yards, TD in a half against Tampa) that he can provide decent stats, too. Normally, we would never suggest playing Trubisky against anyone, but given all the bye-week and injury issues at QB, you might have to dig deep in 12- or 14-team leagues. 16 Jacoby Brissett, QB, Browns Brissett hasn’t put up earth-shattering numbers this season, but he’s been consistent under center. Brissett will be going up against the Ravens’ defense that entered Week 6 allowing the second-most fantasy points to QBs. We are not expecting Brissett to throw for 300 yards, but he should be able to put up 215-220 passing yards and a couple of touchdowns if you need a streamer in deeper leagues. 17 Cooper Rush, QB, Cowboys Rush has been a solid streaming quarterback for the past few weeks and will look to continue that in Week 7 against the Lions if Dak Prescott (thumb) is still out. Entering into Week 6, the Lions were allowing the third-most fantasy points to QBs. If the Cowboys can give Rush time in the pocket, he should be able to deliver the ball to CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup, Ezekiel Elliott, and Tony Pollard...

Bidding for the iPhone started at $US2,500 (~$4,000) and at about 10:15 AEDT on Monday, some sucker (yes, I’m jealous) had committed $US32,783 to the cause. When it was first launched in 2007, the iPhone retailed for around $US600. The auction lot description describes the phone as being “one of the most important and ubiquitous inventions of our lifetime” and while we definitely agree, a home deposit (almost) seems like ridiculous money to drop on a gadget that’s all-but a cool paperweight. The 2007 iPhone auctioned off boasts a whopping 8GB of storage, a touchscreen, a 2MP camera (lol) and, get this, a web browser. Honestly this is a fantastic find and it’s great looking back at how much things have changed. For comparison, the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a 48MP camera and will come with 1TB of storage if you want to hand over $2,769. This factory sealed, first-release iPhone is in exceptional condition. It’s particularly apparent in the United States, where the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) fueled concerns in September with an announcement that it was imposing a $250,000 fine on a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), Ooki DAO, and its investors. The fine was particularly ominous, considering DAOs are intended to be “regulation proof.” The CFTC said in its statement on the issue that Ooki DAO’s bZeroX protocol offered illegal off-exchange trading of digital assets. The agency took issue with the fact that the founders, Tom Bean and Kyle Kistner, tried to use the existing bZeroX protocol within the DAO to put it beyond the reach of regulators. “By transferring control to a DAO, bZeroX’s founders touted to bZeroX community members the operations would be enforcement-proof,” the CFTC said. “The bZx Founders were wrong, however. DAOs are not immune from enforcement and may not violate the law with impunity.” The fine is not all that surprising. The CFTC and other regulators are not going to abide by a veil of decentralization. But, there is something within the ruling that is extremely worrying to Web3 lawyers and developers. The agency’s complaint indicated that the voters within a given DAO could be distinctly liable. In other words, no longer will only founders be targeted, as users who take part could also be liable. This is sure to have a chilling effect on turning people away from DAOs and Web3 in general. After all, the whole point is to avoid this kind of targeting and to create new ecosystems where all parties can vote in peace on issues that concern them. The Securities and Exchange Commission is vying with the CFTC for authority over the world of Web3. Crypto libertarians would dispute whether centralized authorities should have a say at all in an ecosystem that they have only attacked and never aided. The Stabenow-Boozman bill, a proposal in the U.S. Senate, would potentially give the CFTC direct oversight of tokens that qualify as digital commodities. This means that exchanges and online Web3 providers would potentially register with the CFTC, further enmeshing decentralized finance (DeFi) within a centralized web that it was engineered to escape. Monitoring wallets, targeting smart contracts and more The SEC has traditionally sought to regulate cryptocurrency as much as possible. The agency plays a useful role as it is able to pursue instances of outright fraud and Ponzi schemes, which are rampant in Web3. But, there is a stark difference between going after instances of fraud and regulating or governing the industry with regulations that are inapplicable. There are too many question marks related to crypto regulation. One example is related to microtransactions and airdrops. Such transactions take place on many different exchanges over many years, with various price fluctuations. This is impossible to report on from a tax perspective, especially when many platforms are no longer operating. Along with rewards for staking and even derivative tokens liquid staking, it becomes almost impossible to account for. The Biden administration is even targeting Proof-of-Work (POW) blockchains with new “comprehensive guidelines” issued in September. That’s at the same time many administration officials seem to be pushing for a digital USD. Another extremely controversial, draconian crypto regulation that lawmakers have floated includes forcing receivers to verify the personal information of senders when transactions exceed $10,000. They are also seeking to regulate smart contracts as future contracts. And criminal charges are being introduced for those who develop mixers or privacy coins. Though nobody has really said it, what we seem to be witnessing is a war on crypto cloaked in democratic language. The very pillars upon which distributed ledgers have been built are crumbling if these measures are enforced. More conflict to follow? The conflict between traditional regulators and modern finance seems to be reaching a melting point. Regulations are not adapting to meet the needs and strengths of modern DeFi. As such, there is now a standoff between new Web3 protocols and existing legislation. It is almost impossible to deal with the existing legal system as it is not flexible enough to account for DeFi. Ooki DAO is indeed a bad omen for U.S. crypto developers. And it certainly won’t be the last one. A sleuth of bills and procedures are in place. Paradoxically, such actions are likely to simply encourage developers to create programs that are even more resistant to existing laws. The impossibility of complying with existing legislation can leave them with little other choices. From another angle, perhaps the path forward is quite clear. All protocols moving forward may have to be fully decentralized. This was the premise of the very first cryptocurrency, Bitcoin (BTC). Without a central point of failure, there is nobody to target. Developers will have to work on building ecosystems that are completely separate with no ties to the legacy financial system. Blockchains free of identity and Know-Your-Customer (KYC) requirements are the only possible option if developers want to continue operating on American shores. Those with the facility say it has a hands-on approach to treatment. “They’re gonna be doing parenting classes for people who need that, they got anger management, we do a 12 step study, they have peer support groups, literature study, we read out of the NA book,” said facility resident Angel Breeding. King said for many of the women there, building a recovery community closer to home is crucial. “That’s a big part of recovery in itself I feel like; to feel like you belong somewhere,” King said. For residents like Angel Breeding, in two months, they have created a family where they feel they do belong. “They really care about us here and you can tell by the way they talk to us,” said Breeding. “Even the girls that are clients here all care about each other and that’s really great. It helps me get better to know that people actually care about me and want to help me.” Beacons of Hope is not ending with a women’s facility. Voters in Italy last month elected a nationalist leader whose party proposes a U-turn from the effects of globalization. In Brazil, right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro injected doubt into the results of his reelection bid by speculating that the vote would be rigged against him in a conspiracy driven by the country’s elites. In the Philippines this year, voters chose the son of their former dictator Ferdinand Marcos as president, electing to stick with strongman politics. Though hardly a champion of democracy, Russian President Vladimir Putin late last month delivered an address that would sound familiar — and, to many people, attractive — in democracies from the United States to much of Europe. Putin railed against expansive definitions of gender, calling the idea a “perversion,” part of a “complete denial of man [and an] overthrow of faith and traditional values” by “Western elites.” “The world has entered a period of revolutionary transformations,” which Russia aims to resist, Putin said in a speech that echoed the rhetoric of Russia-friendly right-wing politicians in many democracies. In the United States, former president Donald Trump has presumptively rejected future election results, and a majority of Republican candidates on the ballot this fall for major state and federal elective offices have joined him in repudiating the outcome of the 2020 presidential election — an epidemic of election denialism in the United States that historians and political scientists define as a core element in any country’s drift toward authoritarian rule. Thirty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of Soviet communism heralded a new era of democratic governance and a huge expansion of global trade, that democratic wave has been replaced in many countries by a tide of authoritarianism. The street demonstrations and passion for the freedom to travel, trade and speak out that brought down the Soviet empire seemed to promise a vast expansion of people power — and for a time, democracy broke out in most of the former satellite nations of the Eastern Bloc. Similarly, the Arab Spring revolutions that began in 2010 raised the promise — but no enduring reality — of democratization across the Middle East. Recent years have brought a sharp reaction in many parts of the world, as globalization, political polarization, the rise of social media and a collapse of trust in major institutions have left many people feeling betrayed by their governments, torn apart from their careers and alone in their communities, according to historians, political scientists and sociologists who have studied these shifts in the world’s economies and governments. The result has been a similar quest for nationalist solutions in country after country, and a growing bond among the far-right autocrats in those places. For example, Hungary’s prime minister, Victor Orban, and Italy’s likely new prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, have spoken to acclaim at gatherings of the Conservative Political Action Coalition — a group that has helped propel Trump’s movement in the United States. “The trend we are seeing reflects a disillusionment around the world that the democratic process fails to produce effective, charismatic leaders,” said Nikolas Gvosdev, a professor of national security studies at the U.S. Naval War College. “In country after country, the idea spreads that we need strong leaders who get things done. And it’s not just in politics: We see the valorization of tech CEOs like Elon Musk as problem solvers who get the job done.” In the United States, if there’s one thing President Biden and Trump agree on, it is the existence of what Biden calls “a battle for the soul of this nation.” The two men phrase the nature of that struggle very differently. To Biden, the threat is authoritarianism; to Trump, it is socialism and the country’s internal ills as “a failing nation.” But the polarization that the two politicians represent is a corrosive fact, and it mirrors divisions that are leading other large democracies around the world to embrace populist, right-wing leaders who promise a return to order, traditional values and a focus on the frustrations of working people. Trump’s definition of American greatness has long included open admiration of strongmen around the world. After China’s communist regime put down pro-democracy student protests in 1989, Trump praised the Beijing government, saying, “That shows you the power of strength.” During his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump said he admired how Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein killed terrorists. “They didn’t read them the rights,” he said. “They were a terrorist: It was over.” This year, at a rally in Georgia, Trump praised Chinese President Xi Jinping’s control of his people: “He runs 1.5 billion people with an iron fist. Yeah, I think he’s smart.” Also this year, Trump called Putin’s rationale for invading Ukraine “genius,” saying the Russian autocrat is “a tough cookie, got a lot of the great charm and a lot of pride, and he loves his country.” More Republicans are adopting the kind of strongman rhetoric that seemed to play so well for Trump. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), for example, has turned the “authoritarian” label around to malign countries that have long been generally well regarded for good governance. He has declared Canada and Australia to be under the thumb of “authoritarian rule” because of their efforts to limit the spread of covid-19, and he has proposed to create a state military force “not encumbered by the federal government” to handle local emergencies, as well as a state law enforcement agency in charge of protecting “election integrity.” It is no coincidence that populist leaders, many from business or other nonpolitical backgrounds, are rising in many countries around the same time. “In each of these countries, far-right movements have exploited resentments made much more acute by globalization,” said Kathleen Frydl, a historian at Johns Hopkins University who studies conservative institutions. “Each country has its own reasons why authoritarianism becomes appealing, its own inequalities or racial tensions. But there’s a validation across all these countries, where far-right leaders can point to Putin as a model of authority and control.” What the authoritarian regimes have in common is their roots in what Moisés Naím, a former Venezuelan cabinet minister who is now a fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, calls the three P’s: populism, polarization and post-truth. Populist leaders “use ‘divide and conquer’ to explain everything,” Naím said. “Through identity politics, parties become like sports clubs, polarizing people into hard and fixed camps. And with the rise of social media, anything goes and people don’t know whom to believe, taking us into the post-truth era.” In a time when governments around the world are finding it “devilishly difficult to deliver what citizens feel they deserve,” the three P’s result in a craving for the order that strongmen promise, said Naím, the author of “The Revenge of Power.” In the United States, trust in government, business, media and other major institutions has been on the decline for decades. A pervasive sense of insecurity spread among many Americans after the 9/11 attacks, the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting economic upheaval, and the collapse of local communities as the internet nationalized the culture. All of that led the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance to conclude that the United States has fallen into “democratic backsliding.” Putin has been only too happy to encourage the insecurities that lead to support for such displays of strength. The Russian president directed his government to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election to undermine faith in the democratic process and to help Trump win, according to U.S. intelligence agencies. He also has latched onto controversies such as gender politics, as he did in his speech last week, “as part of a deliberate effort to destabilize the politics of Western countries,” Gvosdev said. But the polarization and the spread of disinformation on social media that have altered American politics stemmed primarily from internal domestic changes and dislocations, not from Russia’s interference, Gvosdev said. And for many Americans, the idea that the country’s democracy is threatened does not weigh as heavily as the impact of inflation and the disrupted nature of work in the era of a pandemic and massive technological change. A new Monmouth University poll asked people what issues were most important as they considered their votes this fall, and 54 percent cited concerns about the economy and cost of living, while 38 percent said they were most concerned about fundamental rights and democratic processes. Republicans overwhelmingly put the economy first — 71 percent of them — and Democrats largely put rights first, at 67 percent. But although there is widespread agreement that authoritarian parties and movements have been gaining traction in many countries, the ultimate success and lasting impact of this wave of far-right populism remains the subject of great debate. I’m competitive by nature, so I had high expectations of myself and was excited to show off my skills to my family in my hometown of Chicago. But things didn’t go as I’d planned. During the race, I had trouble lifting my foot. I stopped for a while in the medical tent and ended up walking, rather than running, to the finish line. It wasn’t the way I’d hoped to finish but I figured that a visit to a doctor in Houston, where I live, would get me through my injury. By the time I went to the doctor, though, I was noticing other symptoms that caught me off guard. For instance, not only was I having trouble lifting my foot (known as foot drop), I was feeling exhausted daily and often I wasn’t able to feel my extremities. The doctor told me I didn’t have a sports injury and that instead I should see a neurologist. After several frustrating months of appointments and testing—including an MRI and bloodwork— I was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis, which is a disease that develops when the immune system attacks the central nervous system and causes nerve damage. The “progressive” part of my diagnosis meant that my symptoms would continue to get worse and would drastically limit my functioning. Oddly enough, getting the diagnosis was a bit of a relief because I finally knew the reason I was experiencing tremors, numbness, and fatigue. Of course, I was also scared, but I was referred to an MS clinic near me and I trusted that the doctors there would help me. Living life with MS To my shock, I was told that based on my neurological loss, I would have only about five more years until I’d be confined to a wheelchair. They told me to travel and do all the things I wanted to do while I was still able. Not wanting to think about the future, my husband Joe and I chose to focus on the present and travel to as many places on our bucket list as possible, as quickly as we could. More From Prevention In April of 2019, we took our first bucket-list trip to Ireland. As luck would have it, there was an MS run/walk happening there and we signed up. In the race packet, I read about “HSCT” (technically called hematopoietic stem cell transplantation) for the first time, which was described as an experimental treatment that could stop MS progression by essentially wiping out your immune system then receiving healthy stem cells to “reset” it. There are trials underway here, but it’s not available in the U.S. as a standard treatment option—and it’s extremely expensive, risky, and new. So I put it on the back burner and continued to focus on making the moments I had count. I continued running, but it was getting harder and harder. Even though I didn’t want to acknowledge it, I had to come to terms with the fact that my racing days were limited. I remember telling my running partner that once it became impossible for me to run, I’d just cheer her on. But I was hard headed and wasn’t going to stop without a fight. What my invisible disability looks like I usually didn’t even appear to have a disability to the outside world. In fact, when I was first diagnosed and got the handicap placard for my car, people actually yelled at me for using a handicap space because they didn’t think I had a true disability. That would upset me, but I’m not one to yell out my personal diagnosis across a parking lot to someone who is unimportant to my life, so I tried to ignore that as much as I could. One thing that helped, however, was that I got a therapy dog, named Hope, who was trained through the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to recognize and assist with tremors and seizures. I put a vest on her that said, “I’m visible. Her disability isn’t.” As Joe and I were about to fly to Paris on our second bucket-list trip—where I was planning to run my last half marathon ever—I came to a realization. There I was in the airport, using a cane (albeit a cute one), wearing an e-brace on my leg (a device that sends electrical shocks to help me lift my foot), and watching Joe lug around a big wheelchair the doctors had suggested we bring just in case I needed it. And it struck me that if I didn’t try to stop the progression of my MS, we were headed for a lifetime with that wheelchair and a future where my husband and daughter would have to wait on me hand and foot. So Joe and I decided we had to at least see if I was a candidate for HSCT. The treatment is not for everyone with MS, but I qualified for it, and we hurried to make arrangements to go the HSCT clinic in Mexico in January 2020. I had a lot of fears and there was a 20 to 30 percent chance that the treatment wouldn’t work, but I felt that this was my shot, and I had to take it. Patrick Pressgrove Where I am today The treatment wasn’t easy, but I really did go into the clinic with my cane, and walked out of the clinic a month later on my own. It was surreal. Afterwards, my physical therapist helped me to strengthen the muscles I’d stopped using and retrain my weakened body, and slowly but surely, I learned to walk and run with an improved gait that helps me control my foot. I wasn’t the same runner I was before my MS diagnosis but I was determined to run marathons again because training puts me in a positive mindset and gives me something to work toward. I soon learned that I qualified for the 2021 Boston Marathon as an adaptive athlete (a person with disabilities who is allowed modifications during sports competitions) and I went for it. Unfortunately, during the race, I had to stop at mile 20 because I suffered an extreme bout of foot drop. I had to move forward carefully so as not to cause further damage, which is a risk when the muscles are strained. I was disappointed that I had to walk the rest of the way to the finish line, but the experience led me to an even more exciting opportunity: I was picked by Degree Deodorant to get another chance at finishing a marathon as one of their “Not Done Yet” runners for the San Francisco Marathon in July 2022. I was thrilled because being a part of the campaign would enable me to spread the word about HSCT and show others that those of us with disabilities can break barriers. I trained hard for this one. And it paid off. When I ran across that finish line, it was momentous. It was definitely an “ugly cry” moment. Now, I’m ready for more. I’m back in training for my next marathon. I still have tremors when my muscles are fatigued. I also have to be very particular in my movements in order to do things that were once simple, and that takes a lot of extra effort and focus. But I push through it because it’s worth it and because I’m not going to let MS define me. The company took the now largely dead path of using a blank check company to list its shares on NASDAQ in a deal that would value it at $725 million. It is now worth $338.6 million with the common shares down 53% from the SPAC reference price. The go-public market valuation had already been reduced by 25% from when the deal was initially announced last year. Can the company turn its large social media following and esports legacy into concrete year-over-year revenue growth and eventual profit? It depends on who you ask. FaZe already has a small share of bears who have been clear about their criticism of the company. Indeed, the 12-year-old company has quite a vivid history with a plethora of controversy and negative headlines. However, that’s to be expected for a space as young, erratic, and chaotic as esports. FaZe at its core is a video game company. The company was started back in 2010 by a bunch of Call of Duty players who met on Xbox Live and then started a YouTube channel together to show compilations of sniper trick shots and general gaming antics. It has since grown to encompass around 11 competitive esports teams in games like Fortnite and Counter-Strike. The company counts Snoop Dogg on its board and sells t-shirts, sweatpants, and other merch on its website. Critically, FaZe has been a part of online gaming culture for years. This position has allowed the company to build a large and young audience of both millennials and Gen Z across its social media platforms where it has over 510 million followers combined. Whilst large, a significant number of these are likely to be overlapping with followers engaging with multiple FaZe Clan members. Revenue Ramp Built On Brand Strength FaZe last reported earnings for its fiscal 2022 second quarter in August, the first as a public company. This saw revenue come in at $18.8 million, a 22% increase over the year-ago quarter. The company realized a gross profit of $6.4 million as its gross margin on revenue at 34% increased by 868 basis points sequentially and from a gross margin of 13.62% in the year-ago quarter. Net losses for the quarter came in at $9.3 million, an increase from $7.6 million in the year-ago quarter with cash burn from operations coming in at $16 million. This rate of cash burn is problematic. Firstly, it was the highest rate ever recorded despite the higher revenues and was a more than 122% increase from its comparable year-ago quarter. Further, free cash outflow was $17.6 million during the quarter with capital expenditure at $1.6 million. Secondly, the company only managed to raise net proceeds of $57.8 million from its go-public transaction. This was down from an initially estimated $218 million that was meant to come from a combination of PIPE investors and cash from B. Riley Principal, the SPAC sponsor. Redemptions came in at 92% and $71.4 million of $100 million in PIPE commitments defaulted on their obligations. At the current rate of burn, the company should have just under a full year left. Of course, FaZe will likely lean on dilution to expand out this runway with management already taking steps to grow their topline in the hopes it flows through to the bottom. The company is also gearing to sell new shares with the recent filing of a Notice of Effectiveness with the SEC. FaZe is aiming to issue an additional 5.9 million common shares. The filing also creates the option for share sales by existing shareholders once the share lockup period ends. Will Sandwiches Help The Commons? FaZe is exploring other methods to use its brand to make money with gambling and ghost kitchens being thrown in the hat. In this pursuit to monetize the FaZe brand, the company has partnered with a decentralized gaming virtual world called The Sandbox to develop a plot of land. FaZe World will host virtual events, games, and digital product releases and will allow new ways for the company’s followers to engage with the FaZe Clan roster. The company also partnered with DoorDash (DASH) to launch FaZe Subs, a ghost kitchen brand. The eclectic mix of revenue drivers from the metaverse and sandwiches to clothing does not paint an entirely strong picture but is necessary for growth. I am not a buyer here though. FaZe will likely see its common come under sustained pressure towards the beginning of the first quarter of the 2023 calendar year when the share lockup expires and as it executes on its share offering. One Russian defense blog has an explanation: HIMARS has a secret feature that prevents Russian artillery from targeting it. Not quite, Western defense experts say. The more likely reason is Russian incompetence. In September, Russian defense blog Avia wrote about why Russian artillery has been not able to knock out Ukraine’s M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, which fire GPS-guided rockets that have savaged vital Russian targets such as ammunition dumps, command posts, and bridges. Ah, but those clever Americans have a trick, according to Avia’s unsigned blog post: They designed HIMARS so its rockets would change trajectory and fool counter-battery radars. “This can be seen from the missile’s flight path, which, in fact, shifts the coordinates set by counterbattery means of combat by hundreds of meters, making it impossible to deliver accurate strikes,” the post says, pointing to videos of Ukraine firing the rockets. “Experts draw attention to video footage published by the Ukrainian military, which shows that after launch, the rocket changes its flight path almost immediately,” the post says, according to a translation done by Google. “This greatly distinguishes American systems from conventional MLRS [multiple launch rocket systems], where the projectiles fly along a ballistic trajectory. With a high degree of probability, it is this fact that prevents the establishment of the exact location of the coordinates of the launchers,” it adds. In response to a query from Insider, HIMARS manufacturer Lockheed Martin deferred comment to the US Army. The US Army’s response was simply that “the missile attains the ballistic trajectory it’s assigned to reach the target.” Counter-battery fire — using artillery to knock out other artillery — is a difficult process even under the best of circumstances. But poor Russian counter-battery capabilities are compounding the problem. “The article is probably grasping at straws,” Samuel Cranny-Evans, a land-warfare expert at Britain’s Royal United Services Institute think tank, told Insider. For example, Russia’s Zoopark-1 counter-battery radar can detect rockets at a ranges of 9 to 13 miles, but HIMARS rockets have a range of about 50 miles. “The radar needs to pick the projectile up as it is launched to try and predict its trajectory and plot its likely approach before extrapolating backwards to reach a probable launch point,” Cranny-Evans said. “So if it doesn’t pick the rocket up from its launch point because it’s not within range, it can’t provide a targeting solution.” US soldiers set up an AN/TPQ-53 Q-53 counter-fire target acquisition radar during an exercise in Hawaii in June. Steph Sweeney In addition, counter-battery radars are set to scan for incoming shells and rockets passing through a specific sector at a specific height. “Unless the radar happens to be looking in the right place at the right time, it will not detect a HIMARS launch,” Cranny-Evans said. “I doubt the Russians have enough counter-battery radars to provide continuous coverage and so would be limited in their ability to provide persistent monitoring even if they could get within range of the rockets.” Counter-battery radars also give an approximate location of the firing battery. While this may be good enough to lay down a general barrage and hope to hit something, it’s not accurate enough for a precise shot. This is especially true for mobile artillery, such as truck-mounted HIMARS and armored self-propelled howitzers, that use “shoot and scoot” tactics to fire a salvo and relocate within minutes. That tactic requires counter-battery fire to be launched within minutes of detecting incoming fire – and Russia’s command structure has been too slow to do this. The HIMARS article reveals the depth of Russian frustration with Ukraine’s new Western-supplied weapons. When Russian forces invaded in February, their more modern artillery outranged Ukraine’s older Soviet-era arms. Now the shoe is on the other foot. The article also suggests that someone in Moscow is looking for scapegoats. Rather than fixing poor equipment or ineffective procedures, they find it easier to blame defeat on enemy secret weapons.
