What to Know
After three games on the road, the Fresno State Bulldogs are heading back home. The Bulldogs and the San Jose State Spartans will face off in a Mountain West battle at 10:45 p.m. ET on Saturday at Valley Children’s Stadium. Fresno State and SJSU are even-steven over their past six head-to-heads (3-3).
Fresno State received a tough blow last week as they fell 40-20 to the Boise State Broncos. One thing holding Fresno State back was the mediocre play of QB Logan Fife, who did not have his best game: despite one touchdown, he threw two interceptions with only 5.36 yards per passing attempt.
A well-balanced attack led SJSU over the UNLV Rebels every single quarter on their way to victory last Friday. The Spartans put the hurt on UNLV with a sharp 40-7 victory. With SJSU ahead 23 to nothing at the half, the game was all but over already. QB Chevan Cordeiro had a dynamite game for SJSU; he passed for two TDs and 230 yards on 27 attempts in addition to rushing for two TDs and 104 yards.
Fresno State is expected to lose this next one by 7. Those betting on them against the spread shouldn’t have high expectations for them since the team is 0-2 ATS when expected to lose.
Fresno State is now 1-4 while the Spartans sit at a mirror-image 4-1. A couple defensive stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: The Bulldogs enter the matchup with only 194.2 passing yards allowed per game on average, good for 29th best in the nation. But SJSU is even better: they come into the contest boasting the fifth fewest passing yards allowed per game in the nation at 156. We’ll see if that edge gives SJSU a route to victory.

Fans or skeptics, people considering the metaverse seem to be realizing for the first time that some of their biometric identifiers will be needed for participation.
News and analysis of metaverse business models lately point out what should have been obvious a decade ago when investments into to the new mirror world picked up speed. It will always be a buzzkill to have to type a logon and password before or after slipping on a headset. Like having to ride a horse to get the keys for a car.
Every (legless) step of the way to life in the metaverse is going to require the recording of one biometric identifier or another. Logging on, buying and selling anything, dating, attending business meetings – if passwords are not being typed, biometrics will fill the void.
It is true that there might be trusted entities that vouch for one’s identity.
Maybe people in the metaverse will have digitally represented payment and ID cards, for instance. Or Apple will transplant its model for alleviating its customers of their need to use most passwords.
But in every case, anyone hoping to have a full life while wearing opaque goggles while sitting in a coffee shop, will have to surrender their voice, face, iris and/or fingerprint to someone else. And there is no reason to stop there. Heartbeats, breath, ear canal structure, anything biometric can and someday will be ID currency.
It is fascinating to see venerable tech culture and business magazine Wired write with a note of alarm about how Facebook’s father organization Meta Platforms plans to put five cameras in a future headset.
Those sensors will not be looking outward, warning wearers that they have wondered onto a real freeway. They will be watching eyes and expressions to transfer that data to an avatar.
Holding that information milliseconds to make avatars more interesting is long enough to analyze, make predictions, sell and, of course, steal.
What is fascinating about Wired’s big take here is that it is the only magazine in the world purpose built at the inception of the internet age. No one has been fawning over/warning about cyberspace as long as its editors have (and in more insufferable fonts and colors).
Now there are misgivings.
Wired’s not alone. Time, one of the United States’ oldest surviving news and culture publication, reports qualms, too.
And The Information, launched in 2013 to dig out deep tech industry stories, this month published a piece noting that Apple is expected to launch its line of virtual reality headsets and content next year with iris scanners for ID verification.
Other than selling headsets, this is not new ground for Apple. Recent iPhones scan either fingerprints or faces and compare the data to biometrics that users store beforehand. To Apple’s credit, the initial scans are stored on the devices and not on the cloud, a common practice that can introduce significant drawbacks in terms of personal privacy. And, in theory, it means Apple cannot make money by selling identifiers.
Trade publication Pymnts rounds out the recent coverage, noting that retail investment management firm Charles Schwab instructs customers calling in to repeat a sentence.
At the time of writing the article, the publication reported, the verbal passcode was “At Schwab, your voice is your password.” Extra points for turning voice biometric security into marketing. No points for predicting that Schwab will be allowing its customers to order trades at a company metaverse office with little more than a cough.
It is good that that the community is looking at a metaverse future more soberly than people did during the early woolly days of the internet. But more questions need asking.
If a company like Apple can permanently (more or less) verify someone once they enter the metaverse, making repeated verifications by others less likely, who prevents biometric identifiers from being harvested when a person walks (assuming) into a corporate metaverse area? Even if anonymized, facial identifiers and displayed emotions are going to be a hard sell for some.
There are plenty of entrepreneurs and academics who say notions of privacy are naïve and antiquated. If so, does entrance to the metaverse, even today, amount to giving up common concepts about privacy?
For-profit technology companies are not invested in anything but producing more profit for shareholders. Practices today bend to pressures tomorrow.
Wired noted that almost exactly a year ago, Facebook said it was erasing the face biometrics that it had collected from its 1 billion subscribers. Now, Meta says its Quest Pro headset will have those cameras. Biometrics-derived money is too tempting to pass up.

“I just wanted to first off address Deion Smith’s health. That was that was an emotional moment and more importantly, we’ve said that this thing is going to be all about our players, our student athletes and there’s positive updates on Deion’s status. He’s standing up and walking around so a lot of the fears that everybody has when somebody comes off on a stretcher, I think that I was able to assure that the team that that’s nothing that that we have to be concerned with. On the students rushing the field
“This week was really interesting. I think starting back on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, the bye week, there was so much work that had to be done and I think I just buried myself in the work and then I had a chance to go recruiting in California, that’s where I’m from. A lot of our players had a chance to touch base at home and reconnect with their roots. The joy of football. For me, it was at Los Alamitos High School. I was down in Southern California and there was some really clear thinking that I was able to do with regards to where I wanted this program to go this coming game week, and in doing so, It was weird over the course from really Thursday on I’ve had, I would call them dreams or whatever. I actually dreamt specifically about the student section rushing in the field and I really believed it. I know it sounds crazy, but I really believe that. I had visions in that light sleep, I had visions of Montana (Lemonious-Craig) making plays. I’m not obviously saying I’m a prophet, but there were just a lot of visions of guys making plays and I told the players about that. That wasn’t just a motivational tactic, I saw that. My wife was asking me this morning, why are you not nervous? I was like, I just believe in these players. I believe in the work they’re putting in and I had a peace about what we could do today and I also have a peace about what we can do going forward. I’m just really excited to go back to work with these players and for them to understand that the process that we put in place, process is always going to be greater than results and what they believe in now is that the process yielded a result? That’s what this thing is about going forward is how we practice, how we go about our business on a daily life, how we care for a locker room. Those things are really important and that process has to continue.”
On Gerald Chapman and the defense
“I believed in in Gerald and Rick George believed in Gerald. I knew that I believed in him because most importantly, this is about the players. I knew that they were going to rally behind him and then I knew that that our defensive staff was going to work together tirelessly to put our players in the best position and do so on a unified front and that’s what we saw. It was a blast beyond the defensive headsets. I just can’t imagine calling my first defensive game ever. I don’t even know if he’s called the scrimmage before but with that type of atmosphere, sold out Folsom. There was a lot of crowd noise. There were times I was trying to get the crowd to quiet down because the defense communication. I was listening on the headset and it felt like you were out driving out east to Frederick where I live and getting the AM signal. I was just proud of most importantly, how our players played, how they flew around, the belief, you saw it, it was tangible. I’ve known that was there since I got here in January. I looked at our defensive squad and I was like, we have some dudes here. We have Jamar Montgomery and Guy Thomas. These are guys that I knew had the ability to make plays. Na’im Rodman, the linebackers Quinn Perry, T Lang (Terrance Lang), Chance Main. I see these guys, these are guys that I’ve coached against these types of body types and athletes that I’ve coached against, at the highest level of my career. I knew that these players were capable of doing that. It was just flipping the script in terms of their belief.”
On Players’ spirit
It’s kind of been an internal thing this week, because, you know, the word joy is and probably isn’t the most football centric term. You know, it doesn’t really equate to, hard hits and tackles for loss and in passing touchdowns, but we established it on the first day that we met, and we said that for these next seven weeks, our culture is gonna be defined as joy. And that’s exactly what we’ve we’ve made the mission of what this net means next week. are about. I said it when I was had the opportunity to have this press conference, this isn’t about me. This is about them. And joy is something and I’ve talked to the players and teaching them the different levels and different definitions of what joy means. But joy is something that is completely independent of your circumstances. It’s how you wake up every single morning, it’s how you come to this facility. It’s how we practice and and I’ve seen a team that bought into that vision and we got to continue to bind to that vision. And this is a new challenge, you know, for us in this 2022 season it is how do we bring joy, but also humility after a big win? That’s the challenge and already in the locker room we move on to Oregon State”
ON OWEN
Owen took a pretty significant hit. I want to say it was in either the first or second quarter. It was one of those kind of of abdominal lower kind of mid mid section type hits. And, you know, I’ve played the position I’ve been around the position my whole life. I kind of knew what he was physically going through. And I you know, for me, I just felt like it gave our offense the chance of having a healthy JT you know play in that moment. Owen and had nothing to do with the play. I thought both players played exceptionally well.”
On Hyping Up the Team
“I grew a son of a college football coach that coached some of the best programs in America and I love the traditions of football. I love the pomp and circumstance, the stuff that predates you know my time on even Earth. And so that was really important, but I also felt like the Buff walk was kind of anticlimactic. I wanted to have some type of moment where we could all come together and envision visualize what we’re going to do on that field. And I wanted to show the team the images on that screen of what they’ve done, of the culture of joy of being on that screen of how we’ve practiced. Then also showing them the plays that we’ve made this year. You know, the plays to win football games. We just haven’t pieced it together. And I think that I saw that today. And I think that that was one piece of it. But really at the end of the day, it has nothing to do with me hitting the right buttons. It has everything to do with the players and how they played and I fully believe that.”
On Complete Passes
“I think that it was a belief. I think what we saw in practice all week and during the bye week is very competitive. I kept talking about how we had very competitive periods. When we were going against Cal’s defense it was hard. And that’s a good thing. Like when you can face a defense daily. That’s tough to move the football against as an offense. That helps you. It’s like it’s like a doughnut on the back. Right. I felt like we were swinging with a doughnut on the bat. We stepped in the batter’s box, shut the doughnut, and we could go out and play ball. And that’s exactly what how championship football teams operate, is that it should feel very challenging against your own defense in practice, and then you get to game day and it’s easier now. It wasn’t easy Cals a good defense. They don’t give up a whole lot of points minus one game.”

Former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack has confirmed that he still owns bitcoin. While admitting that it is hard for him to understand why crypto has value, the former executive believes that 50 years from now, crypto could be “a huge way that monetary transactions take place.”

Former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack talked about bitcoin and cryptocurrency in an interview with CNBC Thursday. Mack was the CEO of the global investment bank from June 2005 to January 2010.
Responding to a question about whether he currently owns bitcoin, he confirmed: “I do. Yes.” He further shared:
Through my family office, we have some outright positions in crypto.
The former Morgan Stanley executive also discussed whether Wall Street will become completely digitized in the future. “I don’t think it goes away but I think it changes dramatically,” he said. “Take crypto, it’s hard for me to understand why it has value,” Mack continued, adding:
Fifty years from now maybe that will be a huge way that monetary transactions take place. It’s easy to wire. You don’t have to worry about putting in a bank. It’s on a computer.
The former Morgan Stanley executive opined: “You gotta make sure it’s insulated, protected, and no one can break into it. Fifty years from now, I think things will be even more electronic and driven more and more by input from humans in the computers on how to trade, how to take risks, and make sure they don’t go over their limits.”
Mack has been investing in crypto for many years. In July 2017, he told Bloomberg while discussing his investment in crypto startup Omega One: “I have been watching and investing in the cryptocurrency market over the last several years.” Regarding Omega One, he said at the time that he finds the company “to be an important next step in the emergence of this new economy … making crypto assets cheaper and easier to access.”

While many migrants risk their lives chasing the American dream, Gabriel Zarate fled the rising cost of living in California and moved to the Mexican border city of Tijuana.
The 38-year-old Chilean American now crosses over to work in San Diego as an English teacher during the day and returns home in the evening to Mexico.
“One of the biggest reasons is the cost of living in Tijuana. It’s significantly cheaper than in California,” Zarate said.
Also, he added: “I love Mexican people and food.”

His neighbor and fellow English teacher Mike Rachfal also made the move from San Diego, where he used to pay $1,275 a month to rent a studio.
“Here it’s about half that,” the 36-year-old said.
The cheaper rents can be a sensitive subject in Mexico, where wages are much lower than in the United States and people are also facing increasing living costs.
Tijuana is one of the cities with the fastest-rising real estate prices in Mexico — up 10.7 percent in the first quarter of 2022 from a year earlier, according to the state-owned Federal Mortgage Society.
The average price of properties bought by US citizens is around $270,000 — “three times lower than what the same property would cost in the United States,” said Ruth Sastre, president of the local realtors association.
In Tijuana, a bustling city with a reputation for gang violence, new apartment buildings are springing up with “For Sale” signs in English and prices in dollars.
With more than 1,000 murders in the city already this year, security is an important consideration, but Zarate said that “in general I feel fine in Tijuana, especially downtown or around the border.”
“It’s like any big city. There will always be places rougher or more complicated than others,” he added.

It is a similar story just south of Tijuana in Rosarito on the Pacific coast.
Following a real estate boom that began a decade ago, up to around 12,000 people from the United States now live in the resort city, said Jesus Rincon Vargas, president of the local construction industry association.
In total around 1.6 million US citizens are estimated to live in Mexico, according to their country’s embassy, which does not keep official records.
They can stay for up to six months with a tourist visa, or apply for residency.
Along with the lifestyle and cost of living, the relatively relaxed immigration rules are part of the appeal for remote workers flocking to Mexico, notably the capital.
Brian McDonald, a 34-year-old software developer from the US state of Oklahoma, has spent more than a year in the Latin American country, lured by its budding technology scene.

“Mexico City seems like it’s kind of a gateway for expanding companies and I like working with start-ups,” he said.
“It’s a very friendly culture,” McDonald added.
Office-sharing company WeWork has seen a “significant influx of digital nomads” in districts of Mexico City popular with foreigners, said spokeswoman Cristina Sancen.
“Mexico City has an incomparable climate. For foreigners, it’s definitely a cheaper city. It’s also a cosmopolitan and highly developed city with start-ups and corporations,” she added.
Some foreigners working for US firms are also choosing to base themselves south of the border.
Kirsty Hall, 23, from Scotland, picked Mexico City as a remote working location while helping to set up a San Francisco-based tech start-up.
“I can walk everywhere here. I can cycle. Today I roller-skated to work. Public transport is awesome and it’s very cheap. People are very welcoming too,” Hall said.
The influx of foreigners has divided opinion among residents of the capital, some of whom see the city’s popularity as one of the reasons behind gentrification and rising rents.
“I heard there’s some prejudice towards digital nomads within Mexico City but I haven’t experienced it personally,” said Blazej Mosinski, 23, from Poland, who is doing a San Francisco internship remotely “purely for financial reasons.”
Other challenges of working remotely in Mexico include slower internet speeds than in US technology hubs and safety concerns.
“I was robbed by the police two weeks ago, just walking home,” McDonald said.
But “the rest — the good food, the cost of living — offsets all of those things,” he added.

FEU Tech, the tech-focused campus run by the Far Eastern University Group of Schools, is seeing an increasing need for data scientists now and in the coming years.
According to FEU Tech, the Asia Pacific (APAC) is one of the fastest-growing markets for data science. Quoting a survey by global marketing intelligence firm Intelligent Data Corp., the school said 3 in 4 enterprises in the APAC in 2021 choose to keep or even expand investments in big data analytics (BDA).
“It’s worth noting the top 10 industries responsible for big investments in data: banking and securities, communications, healthcare, manufacturing, government, insurance, retail, transportation, energy, and education round out the list,” FEU Tech said in a media release. “All of these industries anticipate a need to analyze data to craft new business solutions in the future.”

He denied that he’s pressing, J.C. Jackson insisting that his contract isn’t weighing on him like some $82.5-million anchor strapped to his back.
Part of the problem, Jackson explained, is that he should be pressing, as in playing a tighter, more aggressive style at the line of scrimmage.
“I’m a bump-and-run corner, a press corner,” Jackson said. “That’s my game. I need to stick to my game.”
The Chargers signed Jackson in March to a five-year deal guaranteeing him $40 million and potentially worth more than double that amount. He cashed in financially after blossoming as an undrafted free agent in New England.
Jackson was acquired to help ignite a defense that too often went flat last year. The Chargers needed more game-changers, more playmakers who could steal footballs and momentum.
In the previous four seasons, no one in the NFL had more interceptions than Jackson’s 25. He made his first Pro Bowl last year after leading the league with 23 passes defensed.
But in three games with his new team, Jackson has struggled to produce. He has yet to intercept a pass and has been credited with just a single breakup.
Jackson missed the Chargers’ season opener and then their Week 3 matchup while dealing with the lingering effects of an August surgical procedure on his right ankle. Both he and coach Brandon Staley said the time off has been a factor in his slow start, but Jackson insisted he is healthy.

“The ankle thing has nothing to do with it,” he said. “It’s more about technique and fundamentals. It’s still a learning process with the defense and everything else. I’m not blaming my ankle. I’m 100% healthy.”
Said Staley: “We brought him here to do what he does best. We’re not trying to change him, that’s for sure. It’s just him getting out there with his teammates, getting in rhythm and playing his game.”
His game, Jackson assured, will be on display soon, the cornerback suggesting that a first-strike approach will lead to increased production. As a starter, he never has played more zone than he has this season, according to Next Gen Stats.
Last weekend in Cleveland, Jackson was beaten in the first quarter for an 11-yard touchdown in man-to-man coverage by Amari Cooper. When the ball was snapped, Jackson was nearly 10 yards off the line of scrimmage.
He ended up surrendering five receptions for 58 yards against the Browns as they targeted him a team-high nine times, according to Pro Football Focus.
But Chargers defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill said Jackson’s performance improved after halftime, after the coaches “challenged him” and made adjustments.
“The second half, we felt like that story was a little bit different,” Hill said. “He got out there in press and challenged a little bit more, and it looked a whole lot better. That is what we have to continue to do. … He’s going to mix it up. But we know that his strong suit is getting up there and pressing.”
Jackson has been targeted 20 times this season while allowing 15 receptions for 245 yards and two touchdowns, according to PFF. He yielded 108 of those yards in Week 4 at Houston.
During his four years with the Patriots, Jackson never finished with a PFF coverage grade below 70. So far for the Chargers, he has graded out at less than half that number: 32.1.
“Nobody knows my confidence more than me,” Jackson said. “Nobody’s got higher standards than myself. I’m gonna get back to where I should be soon. This is nothing I can’t handle.”
To follow Jackson on Twitter, search for “MR_INT,” a reference to the ball-thieving ways that marked his time in New England. During a stretch in 2020, he had interceptions in five consecutive games.
But, dating to his final appearance with the Patriots, he has gone four in a row without a pickoff, matching the longest such streak of his career in games he has started.
Jackson’s most recent interception came Jan. 2 against Trevor Lawrence on a day when the Jacksonville quarterback was picked off three times.
“Each week, I feel like J.C.’s growing,” safety Derwin James Jr. said. “He’s gonna keep improving. Eventually, he’s gonna play the way we know he can play. We all know what type of player J.C. is.”
Jackson and James have lockers next to each other in the Chargers’ Costa Mesa training facility. Last week while Jackson was talking to reporters, James leaned in and said, “I can’t wait till you get your first pick.”
Responded Jackson: “That’s what they waitin’ for. The world waitin’ on that.”
Reminded that the world includes the Chargers and their fans, Jackson smiled.
“Once I start making plays, y’all are going to see,” he said. “Then we’re going to see what they got to say then. … It’s just a matter of time.”

The Chargers likely will be without Keenan Allen (hamstring) on Monday night against Denver after the wide receiver was limited in practice all week. He was listed as doubtful. … Trey Pipkins III (knee) was listed as questionable, but Staley indicated he expects the right tackle to play. … Kicker Dustin Hopkins (quadriceps) is set to return after missing last week’s game. … Center Corey Linsley also is expected to play after being held out of practice Saturday because of an illness.

The Atlanta Braves in 2021 played 16 playoff games and never faced elimination. In 2022, they played four and are going home for the winter.
The Philadelphia Phillies, the six seed in the NL in the first-ever full season with six seeds in the playoffs, took down the defending champs in Game 4 Saturday, 8-3, clinching the best-of-five NLDS with a 3-1 series win.
Here’s how it happened on Saturday in a raucous Citizens Bank Park.
Marsh, Realmuto spark offense
The Phillies had runners on first and third in the first inning before an out was recorded, but Braves starter Charlie Morton got two strikeouts and a harmless fly out to end the threat. In the second, an Alec Bohm single off Morton — we’ll get back to that in a second — and Jean Segura one-out single meant the Phillies had runners at the corners again. This time around, they made sure to get the runners home by putting the bat on the ball. Brandon Marsh, take it away.
The three-run shot sent the park into a frenzy.
The next run the Phillies scored was historic. J.T. Realmuto hit an inside-the-park home run (full story here), the first inside-the-park home run in Phillies playoff history and the first by a catcher in playoff history.
As the late, great Mel Allen would’ve said, “how about that?”
Realmuto would add an RBI single in the sixth — it was an infield single, so he kept flashing those wheels — during a rally in which the Phillies put the Braves away. It was only a 4-2 Phillies lead before that half inning, but three runs with two outs from the Phillies essentially iced it. Rhys Hoskins and Bryce Harper also had RBI singles and Harper doubled down with a solo home run in the eighth.
Segura also deserves mention for his two-hit, two-run effort from the eight-hole.
Morton leaves with injury after comebacker
Remember above when I said we’d get back to Morton? Also, remember when he got hit with a line drive in Game 1 of the World Series last year? He stayed in the game in both instances before having to be removed. It turned out it was a broken fibula in the World Series. This time around, it seems like his elbow was hit with the liner (full story here).
Keep in mind the Segura single and Marsh home run off Morton came after he was hit with the line drive. He did finish the second inning and then came back out for the third, but after a few warmup tosses essentially pulled himself from the game.
Morton ended up allowing three runs on four hits in two innings of work.
Syndergaard, bullpen piece it together
Since coming over from the Angels at the trade deadline, Noah Syndergaard had been mediocre at best. He also got an inning of work in relief in Game 2, so it might’ve been a bit head-scratching for some people when the Phillies tabbed him as the Game 4 starter. The plan heading into the game, however, was just for Syndergaard to get through the Braves’ lineup one time.
He did just that. In three innings of work, he allowed just a solo homer (one run on one hit) while striking out three, all on just 35 pitches. Basically, he did his job and left with the Phillies leading. Now they needed six more innings.
Andrew Bellatti went an inning, giving up a solo homer and avoiding a meltdown. Veteran lefty Brad Hand went a scoreless fifth while striking out two. José Alvarado got a 1-2-3 sixth with two strikeouts, then stuck around and allowed a solo homer before getting the first two outs in the seventh. Former starter Zach Eflin was next and he got through 1 1/3 innings clean and with three strikeouts. For the ninth, it was Seranthony Domínguez.
Take note of the Braves’ runs being solo home runs. This was the best power-hitting team in the league all season. The Phillies pitchers made sure to keep the bases clear for most of the game, meaning all that damage was limited.
Next up
For the Phillies, they’ll move on to await the winner of the other NLDS. Perhaps it’s the Padres with a Game 4 win or they wait on the Dodgers or Padres after Game 5. Regardless, Games 1 and 2 will be in Southern California before the Phillies return home to what will obviously be a hero’s welcome in Citizens Bank Park. Boy, was it rocking in Games 3 and 4 of this series.
What a journey for the Phillies. They were 21-29 through May. They fired their manager. They lost 2021 MVP Bryce Harper to a broken thumb in late June. They were only three games over .500 until a winning streak in late July. They lost 10 of 13 at one point into late September and had to fight nearly to the finish of the regular season just to make the playoffs. They trailed 2-0 going into the ninth inning of Game 1 of the Wild Card Series. And now they are in the NLCS for the first time since 2010.
On the flip side, the Braves had one of the greatest extended runs in regular-season history. They went 78-34 after the calendar turned to June. They ran down the Mets to win the NL East despite having faced a 10 1/2 game deficit. Now, the defending champions caught a glimpse into what a fickle mistress postseason baseball can be. They won 88 games and the World Series last year. This year, they won 101 games and nary a postseason series.

Opening statement
“This is all for the players and all about the players. This is all about their response, their resolve, all of the stud that I said here ten days ago, everyone thought I was crazy. We talked about how unbelievable of a group of resilient fighters that we have in our locker room. I think everybody had a chance to see that on full display today. I’m just really proud of these players. I told them after the game, that’s a great moment. It’s a moment we’re going to celebrate but we talked about a fresh season, a new season. What I told them is that the best part about being 1-0 which we are in our new season, post bye week is that you have a chance to be 2-0 and that’s where our attention turns 24 hours from now. We’re going to get back to work tomorrow and we’re going to practice we’re going to add some Sunday work and we’ve just got to keep our eyes straight ahead. Enjoy this, it’s one of those days that you’ll never forget, but at the end of the day, we’ve got a job to do and we believe in our abilities to go do that and that’s where eyes are going to be fixated.”
On Deion Smith’s injury
“I just wanted to first off address Deion Smith’s health. That was that was an emotional moment and more importantly, we’ve said that this thing is going to be all about our players, our student athletes and there’s positive updates on Deion’s status. He’s standing up and walking around so a lot of the fears that everybody has when somebody comes off on a stretcher, I think that I was able to assure that the team that that’s nothing that that we have to be concerned with. Deion is up and walking and I think he was emotional because he didn’t have a chance to celebrate on the field with his teammates, but he was a huge part of that victory, both in his play and more importantly, just how much this team loves him and shows their support for him there. That was a moment I’ll never forget in my coaching career, just the brotherhood that was shown through that moment.”
On taking over as interim head coach
“This week was really interesting. I think starting back on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, the bye week, there was so much work that had to be done and I think I just buried myself in the work and then I had a chance to go recruiting in California, that’s where I’m from. A lot of our players had a chance to touch base at home and reconnect with their roots. The joy of football. For me, it was at Los Alamitos High School. I was down in Southern California and there was some really clear thinking that I was able to do with regards to where I wanted this program to go this coming game week, and in doing so, It was weird over the course from really Thursday on I’ve had, I would call them dreams or whatever. I actually dreamt specifically about the student section rushing in the field and I really believed it. I know it sounds crazy, but I really believe that. I had visions in that light sleep, I had visions of Montana (Lemonious-Craig) making plays. I’m not obviously saying I’m a prophet, but there were just a lot of visions of guys making plays and I told the players about that. That wasn’t just a motivational tactic, I saw that. My wife was asking me this morning, why are you not nervous? I was like, I just believe in these players. I believe in the work they’re putting in and I had a peace about what we could do today and I also have a peace about what we can do going forward. I’m just really excited to go back to work with these players and for them to understand that the process that we put in place, process is always going to be greater than results and what they believe in now is that the process yielded a result? That’s what this thing is about going forward is how we practice, how we go about our business on a daily life, how we care for a locker room. Those things are really important and that process has to continue.”
On Gerald Chapman and the defense
“I believed in Gerald and Rick George believed in Gerald. I knew that I believed in him because most importantly, this is about the players. I knew that they were going to rally behind him and then I knew that that our defensive staff was going to work together tirelessly to put our players in the best position and do so on a unified front and that’s what we saw. It was a blast beyond the defensive headsets. I just can’t imagine calling my first defensive game ever. I don’t even know if he’s called the scrimmage before but with that type of atmosphere, sold out Folsom. There was a lot of crowd noise. There were times I was trying to get the crowd to quiet down because the defense communication. I was listening on the headset and it felt like you were out driving out east to Frederick where I live and getting the AM signal. I was just proud of most importantly, how our players played, how they flew around, the belief, you saw it, it was tangible. I’ve known that was there since I got here in January. I looked at our defensive squad and I was like, we have some dudes here. We have Jamar Montgomery and Guy Thomas. These are guys that I knew had the ability to make plays. Na’im Rodman, the linebackers Quinn Perry, T Lang (Terrance Lang), Chance Main. I see these guys, these are guys that I’ve coached against these types of body types and athletes that I’ve coached against, at the highest level of my career. I knew that these players were capable of doing that. It was just flipping the script in terms of their belief.”
On players’ spirt
“It’s kind of been an internal thing this week, because, you know, the word joy is and probably isn’t the most football centric term. You know, it doesn’t really equate to, hard hits and tackles for loss and in passing touchdowns, but we established it on the first day that we met, and we said that for these next seven weeks, our culture is gonna be defined as joy. And that’s exactly what we’ve we’ve made the mission of what this net means next week. are about. I said it when I was had the opportunity to have this press conference, this isn’t about me. This is about them. And joy is something and I’ve talked to the players and teaching them the different levels and different definitions of what joy means. But joy is something that is completely independent of your circumstances. It’s how you wake up every single morning, it’s how you come to this facility. It’s how we practice and and I’ve seen a team that bought into that vision and we got to continue to bind to that vision. And this is a new challenge, you know, for us in this 2022 season it is how do we bring joy, but also humility after a big win? That’s the challenge and already in the locker room we move on to Oregon State.”
On QB Owen McCown
“Owen took a pretty significant hit. I want to say it was in either the first or second quarter. It was one of those kind of of abdominal lower kind of mid mid section type hits. And, you know, I’ve played the position I’ve been around the position my whole life. I kind of knew what he was physically going through. And I you know, for me, I just felt like it gave our offense the chance of having a healthy JT you know play in that moment. Owen and had nothing to do with the play. I thought both players played exceptionally well.”
On hyping up the team
“I grew a son of a college football coach that coached some of the best programs in America and I love the traditions of football. I love the pomp and circumstance, the stuff that predates you know my time on even Earth. And so that was really important, but I also felt like the Buff walk was kind of anticlimactic. I wanted to have some type of moment where we could all come together and envision visualize what we’re going to do on that field. And I wanted to show the team the images on that screen of what they’ve done, of the culture of joy of being on that screen of how we’ve practiced. Then also showing them the plays that we’ve made this year. You know, the plays to win football games. We just haven’t pieced it together. And I think that I saw that today. And I think that that was one piece of it. But really at the end of the day, it has nothing to do with me hitting the right buttons. It has everything to do with the players and how they played and I fully believe that.”
On complete passes
“I think that it was a belief. I think what we saw in practice all week and during the bye week is very competitive. I kept talking about how we had very competitive periods. When we were going against Cal’s defense it was hard. And that’s a good thing. Like when you can face a defense daily. That’s tough to move the football against as an offense. That helps you. It’s like it’s like a doughnut on the back. Right. I felt like we were swinging with a doughnut on the bat. We stepped in the batter’s box, shut the doughnut, and we could go out and play ball. And that’s exactly what how championship football teams operate, is that it should feel very challenging against your own defense in practice, and then you get to game day and it’s easier now. It wasn’t easy Cals a good defense. They don’t give up a whole lot of points minus one game.”

The day the Terra Classic price (LUNC) hit its 2022 top, two of the best crypto traders correctly predicted the bull run was over.
That was September 8th, when the LUNC price reached $0.000593 on Binance, and as of mid October LUNC is now trading over 50% lower, below the $0.0003 support level.
Terra LUNA Classic Price Prediction – Light Crypto
Light (@lightcrypto), who has 169,000 followers, tweeted: “Think LUNC burn trade is about to implode, momentum just broke, elevator down is a high possibility”.
GCR (@GiganticRebirth), who has 187,000 followers, replied from his secondary account with a Hillary Clinton quote “that’s right, zero”. GCR famously won a $10 million bet against former Terraform Labs CEO Do Kwon, with his bearish Terra LUNA price prediction back in March.
Light, who runs a prop trading firm, then posted a long tweet thread a few days later with a mix of fundamental and technical analysis:
As well as predicting the Terra Classic price action would be a pump and dump – “pumped by hit-and-run developers and cynical exchange operators, all taking advantage of the hordes of retail looking to make it all back in one trade” he tweeted a few days later that LUNC would drop 90%+ to return to its origin, or lower.
Later that month, the LUNC price did crash 70% to $0.000179, although nothing goes down in a straight line (the Terra LUNA collapse in May was a black swan event caused by the circulating supply hyper inflating to 6.5 trillion).
For Light’s prediction to play out – he charted a target of $0.00004, the yearly low of the new Terra Classic asset since the hard fork, hit on June 9th 2022 – the LUNC price would need to drop 84% from today’s price.
October LUNC Price Prediction Tweets – LUNC Burn
Light’s most recent tweet thread this month centres around Binance burning LUNC tokens, and how the 1.2% LUNC burn is not enough to justify Terra Classic increasing over $1 billion in market cap since it was announced.
He also posted Coinalyze data on Oct 3rd showing an “insane amount of deadwood to wipe out in LUNC derivatives, $262.2 million across venues and instruments, all levered, all driven by a bankrupt narrative into a sell the news event.”
Light opened a Terra Classic short position on Oct 2nd:
“LUNC managed to add over $1b in market capitalization on a Binance announcement that will see a few million dollars removed from its circulating supply tomorrow.
And in the long run, that weekly burn will trend to 0 along with LUNC’s volume. Filled full short again.”
Incredibly, Oct 2nd was again a top, as the LUNC price spiked back to $0.000372 but the bounce from $0.0001794 ended there.
Like his Sept 8th post, the Terra Classic price has not traded higher than that day since then.
Across crypto Twitter circles, Light is considered one of the best crypto traders to follow for price predictions and other market analysis.
As is GCR, who corrected predicted the Bitcoin price was topped out back in November 2021, when the all-time high of $69,000 was hit and the bear market began.
We reported on how Gigantic Rebirth shorted LUNC at $0.00042 on Sept 9th, and was up almost $4.4 million in PnL a week later.
Also on the day the Terra Classic price topped, another notable crypto analyst Tree of Alpha compared LUNC to a ponzi scheme and pointed out transaction tax burns didn’t prevent SafeMoon from going to zero.

Above all things, the 101st Far Hills Race Meeting was another celebration for all involved that produced a wealth of smiles.
Yet the featured race of the Oct. 15 card, the $250,000 Grand National Steeplechase (NSA-G1), generated a much different emotion than the joy seen in all corners of the racetrack throughout the day.
There were tears welling in the eyes of Irish trainer John “Shark” Hanlon and his emotions poured out after T.J. McDonald’s Hewick captured the prestigious steeplechase stakes by a widening 11 1/2 lengths.
After loudly cheering his horse’s decisive victory in America’s premier steeplechase race, as Hanlon savored the moment, his heart filled with thoughts back home in Ireland of 13-year-old Jack De Bromhead, a who tragically died last month during a fall in a pony race organized by Hanlon.
“This one is for Jack, a great young lad,” Hanlon said. “This is such a big, emotional day. I never dreamed it could happen. It means so much to all of us.”
The Grand National was the main event of the ultra-festive day of steeplechase racing in New Jersey, mixed with one new flat stakes, that brought a crowd estimated at 25-30,000 to Far Hills for a day of racing that unfolded like a grand festival for the fans who spent the day merrily eating, drinking, and chatting with family and friends in between races.
“It’s unreal here,” Hanlon said. “We were very well looked after. They put on a great show that is something special.”
Hewick, the third European Grand National winner in the last four runnings, was rather special himself. Though the United States’ Snap Decision was the 6-5 favorite, Hewick, a 7-year-old Virtual gelding who was the 2-1 second choice in a field of nine, lived up to his reputation as a top European jumper. Already a two-time stakes winner overseas in 2022, Hewick ($6.20) and jockey Jordan Gainford flawlessly circled the Far Hills course to cover the 2 5/8-mile distance in 5:11.60 over yielding turf.
“I’ve never had a horse anywhere near as good this one,” Hanlon said. “For a trainer like me with a small yard, he’s brilliant.”
Noah and the Ark was a distant second, followed by Ask Paddington in the field of nine that saw one jumper leave the course and another fall but walk off. Snap Decision never fired and finished sixth.
The new addition to the day was the $100,000 John Forbes Memorial Stakes, a two-mile flat race on turf honoring the memory of the late trainer who was a highly respected and influential figure in New Jersey racing.
Trainer Keri Brion, who won the Harry E. Ellis jump stakes with Ljay to start the day, sent out the favorite in Three Diamonds Farm’s Cross Border , a $1.1 million earner, but he finished third and she landed in the winner’s circle with Agitare , who was making his United States debut.
The 5-year-old son of Teofilo , owned by Molly and Paul Willis, CFC Stables, Danny and Sheila Kelly, and L5 Racing, had been racing in marathon races for trainer James Bolger in Ireland before arriving at Brion’s barn.
“I got him two months ago from Jim Bolger and they thought very highly of him,” said Brion, whose horse won by 4 3/4 lengths in a time of 3:36. “I knew he would love the track. We go slower here and an Irish horse is used to these conditions. It’s great they had this race and it’s fabulous they had it. It was good show.”
Agitare ($39) was ridden by Bernard Dalton, a steeplechase jockey who regularly rides at weights of 140 pounds or more and that may have played a big role in the outcome of a race in which all 14 starters carried at least 140 pounds.
After tracking the pacesetting Basso for much of the race, in the stretch Agitare, who was toting 144 pounds, went by the tiring Basso, who was carrying 140 pounds including jockey Nik Juarez, who rides at flat tracks at weights of less than 120 pounds. As a result there was a considerable difference in the amount of lead weight carried by the victorious Agitare and Basso, who settled for second.
“All that weight is a lot to carry for two miles with a smaller jockey,” Brion said. “A race like this, with the distance and weight, is better suited for a steeplechase jockey.”
Another difference between the John Forbes and the steeplechase races was that the jockeys in the flat race could use their riding crops in accordance with Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority rules limiting the strikes. Since HISA currently has no jurisdiction over steeplechase racing, in the jump races jockeys had to follow the pre-HISA New Jersey regulations allowing jockeys to use their crop only as a safety measure.
It was a rewarding afternoon for horsemen with a combined $625,000 in purse money on the line in the seven races, yet the day, like a typical steeplechase meet, involved much more than what happened on the yielding turf course.
It was a rollicking daylong party with a legion of devoted fans who year-after-after travel to Far Hills to meet with large groups of friends with the common goal of eat, drink, and be merry as a collection of the best steeplechase jumpers circled the course around them.
“It’s like a Breeders’ Cup day, except in a much prettier setting,” said Richard Migliore, an analyst for the “America’s Day at the Races” show on FOX Sports that aired the Far Hills races. “The atmosphere is just as electric as if you are walking into Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day. I feel privileged to be here. Everyone is very enthusiastic about it. There’s a lot of partying.”
In some ways, the one-day Far Hills Race Meeting has vestiges of Saratoga Race Course. Approaching the course, you’ll see residents waving cars into their lawns for a $20 parking fee, just as they do at the Spa.
Like Saratoga, fans also arrive early in the morning to secure their spots for the day or begin the meticulous task of assembling some high-end picnicking and tailgating.
While the scene at the Saratoga backyard usually mirrors a family barbeque—without the grills—at Far Hills you will see elaborate and merry tailgating on a prodigious level that puts to shame the scene in the parking lot of an NFL or college football game. With no grandstand, the grounds are jammed with people who tailgate from their cars or bring collapsible tables and chairs for lounging and dining.
For fans like Mike Rubin, of Califon, N.J., the afternoon of racing at Far Hills is circled on the calendar each year and plans for his tailgating extravaganza are formulated months in advance.
“We love it. We would never miss it. We would cancel any event that was scheduled to be here,” Rubin said. “It’s a day we look forward to every year. This is our 30th year here. Even when they did not have the event (in 2020) due to COVID, we had a day at our home. So we’ve never missed a year.”

With 32 family and friends joining him for the day of racing, Rubin had two trackside parking spots for the day. One for a lavishly displayed array of adult beverages and food that included Moroccan salmon, filet mignon, shrimp cocktail, and Mandarin salad.
For National Steeplechase Association president Al Griffin, the streams of people enjoying the day in highly pleasant, fall weather underscored the growing popularity of steeplechase racing on several levels.
“I think we have found a growing niche. A silver lining in the last two years is that a lot of new fans and flat owners have embraced steeplechase racing. The horse inventory and number of owners has grown, Our race meets have been sellouts. The crowds are back,” Griffin said. “This is our biggest day but the scene is duplicated at 32 steeplechase venues up and down the East Coast with the crowd enjoying the day. The best part is that these meets benefits charities with the profits going somewhere useful. There’s a great model of philanthropy and community involvement.”
Without question the local Far Hills charities that have benefitted to the tune of $20 million over the course of the previous 100 meets will see a rise in that impressive figure after Saturday’s jammed event.
“This is fabulous, bringing it all together,” said Guy Torsilieri, chairman of the Far Hill Race Meeting for about 25 years. “The money we raised for charity, the great steeplechase races, the flat race we added. It doesn’t get any better than that.”

DENTON, Texas (AP) – Austin Aune threw for two touchdowns, North Texas rolled up 475 yards on the ground and the Mean Green beat Louisiana Tech 47-27 on Saturday for their eighth straight Conference USA win.
Parker McNeil’s 58-yard pass to Tre Harris got the Bulldogs (2-4, 1-1) within seven points heading into the fourth quarter, but the Mean Green (4-3, 3-0) got a pair of field goals from Ethan Mooney and a Kaylon Horton TD run of 66 yards to pull away.
Isaika Ragsdale’s 1-yard TD run gave UNT the game’s first points and the Mean Green would lead thereafter, taking a 27-17 at halftime behind Ayo Adeyi’s 92-yard TD run and Aune’s 51-yard pass to Jvaire Shorter.

UNT outgained Louisiana Tech 671-504 with the Mean Green defense collecting seven sacks, three by Mazin Richards and 2 1/2 by Roderick Brown. Aune threw for 196 yards with an interception. Adeyi had 122 yards rushing, Oscar Adaway III 113 and Kaylon Horton 97.
McNeil threw for 424 yards and two scores. Smoke Harris had 156 yards receiving and Tre Harris 129.

SBMM Gaming Meaning Explained
SBMM in gaming is an acronym that stands for “Skill-Based Matchmaking.” Its goal is to group players together of similar skill and shorten the gap between one player’s skill to another as much as possible. If you’ve played titles such as Fortnite or Valorant, you’ve witnessed SBMM in action.
When SBMM is working correctly, you’ll get paired with other players that won’t outright stomp you on the scoreboard, which comes in handy if you’re new, especially in titles like Call of Duty: Warzone. Likewise, there’s less of a chance you’ll completely dominate others.

SAN ANTONIO — A Bexar County judge has sentenced a man to 20 years in prison for a crash that killed a father and his daughter on New Year’s Eve 2020.
Cesar Gonzalez, 21, pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Gonzales was driving 85 mph, nearly three times above the speed limit, when his pickup struck a minivan backing out of a driveway in the 3400 block of West Popular Street, a news release from the District Attorney’s Office said.
Data from the Texas Department of Transportation shows the speed limit at that stretch of Popular is 30 mph.
Jesus Aguilar Jr., 31, and his three children were inside the van when Gonzales smashed into it.

The minivan caught fire because of the collision, according to the news release. The blaze trapped Aguilar and two of the children inside the van. Family members who heard the crash rushed outside to try and free them, the DA’s Office said. The third child, Christina Spohn, 14, was thrown out of the van and fatally injured.
The family members were unable to free Aguilar, who died in the fire.
Aguilar’s 5-year-old son and 1-year-old daughter suffered burns but survived.
Gonzales testified he saw the minivan on fire and heard Aguilar screams but still fled from the scene, calling his decision “a mistake I can’t fix.”
Judge Catherine Torres-Stahl sentenced Gonzalez to the maximum allowed by law for each charge, the release said. The sentences will run concurrently as state law does not allow them to run consecutively.
“This defendant made a series of terrible choices that can never be undone,” Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said.. “His recklessness could have harmed or even killed more people.”

PETALING JAYA: Despite the gloomy skies of the monsoon season, the 15th General Election (GE15) is still expected to bring a ray of sunshine to the domestic travel and hospitality industry.
Even with predictions of a lower voter turnout due to political fatigue and the possibility of polling day being a weekday, domestic travel is expected to see a rise during the election period.
This is because party workers, election staff and voters will be on the ground, said Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents president Datuk Tan Kok Liang.
“Hotels, transport service providers, and food and beverage outlets can look forward to a significant rise in revenue,” he added.
Asked if there had been tour cancellations or changes in vacation dates by holidaymakers, Tan said this has not been the case as voting is not mandatory in Malaysia.
“Many families are going ahead with their overseas holidays regardless of the polling date, and international tours that had been booked earlier will likely proceed.
“Cancellations are minimal except for active politicians and party members who may have other responsibilities,” he said.
According to Melaka Tourism Association president Madelina Kuah, no bookings by independent travellers or group package tours have been cancelled so far.
She said that since Melaka had already held its state election in 2021, there were only six parliamentary seats up for grabs in GE15.
“On voting day, it is likely that people who have committed to travelling will go ahead,” said Kuah.
Sky Mirror Tour & Travel Sdn Bhd managing director Dyven Wong said people are waiting until the Election Commission (EC) announces the polling date before rescheduling travel plans.
“Until today, no customer has cancelled or postponed bookings because of GE15,” he said.
Political analyst Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian of Universiti Sains Malaysia expects voter turnout in this election to be lower than in GE14 in 2018, which was at 82.32%.
A low turnout will give an advantage to Barisan Nasional, he said, adding that the high turnout in GE14 saw Pakatan Harapan form the government for the first time, while low turnouts at the Melaka and Johor state elections secured big wins for Barisan Nasional.
“It is very likely that many Malaysians will not come back to vote unless political parties can convince them,” said the professor.
Prof Sivamurugan also said a low turnout could also be expected if GE15 is held on a weekday, adding that this is nothing new.
“The last GE was held on a Wednesday. In fact, our first GE after independence in 1959 was held on a Wednesday; GE9 on a Tuesday; and GE10 on a Monday.
“However, it’s better to have it on a weekend to encourage more voters to come out and vote,” he said, adding that Malaysian voters are also tired of the continuous politicking since 2018.
“A ‘wow’ or feel-good factor will motivate them to come out, but it all depends on issues brought up by the parties and candidates,” he said.
The EC will meet on Thursday to set nomination and polling dates.

“Eat your vegetables” is a phrase we have heard since we were children. And though your parents or doctors might have bothered you by repeating this saying, it is absolutely true. Vegetables provide the body with vitamins, fiber and other nutrients essential for life. And while some of these nutrients can be gathered from other sources, it is often difficult or expensive to obtain supplements in high enough quantities to ensure the same benefits. At the University, not only is healthy eating often expensive, but it is incredibly difficult to come by. Through advertising on the U.Va. Dining’s website, it claims that it is committed to “empowering you to make the healthy choices you’re looking for,” as well as passionate about “dining programs that make it easy to eat well.” After reviewing its practices, there is little evidence that holds up that mission statement. Simply put, more needs to be done to ensure that students can make healthy choices at low or no additional cost, and at the moment, there is only minimal progress.
The University and its dining company, Aramark, took a monumental step towards achieving healthy and sustainable eating on Grounds in 2019. Aramark chose to reinvent “the Castle,” a restaurant option adjacent to Bonnycastle House on McCormick Road. The Castle upgraded its meal options and earned itself a Green Restaurant certification by pursuing sustainable and increasingly plant-based practices and menu items. The reasoning for this pivot was students’ requests for more nutritious foods that had vegetarian or vegan options. The University and Aramark responded with this change to the Castle, hoping to address concern over the availability of plant-based and healthy options.
But with 18,000 undergraduate students on Grounds and limited hours, the Castle is not prepared to stand alone in supporting the University’s pledge to dining programs that make it easy to eat healthy. And according to the University’s dining website, while all three dining halls have a Green Restaurant certification, only two out of the nine meal locations coined “restaurants” have that credential. Of course, there are other options to eat healthy on Grounds. One extremely popular location is The Juice Laundry, a smoothie and juicery that boasts locations at Newcomb Hall, the Aquatic and Fitness Center and an off-Grounds location on Preston Avenue. The store’s mission is to ensure transparency in their ingredients by listing them in large lettering and having an open, visible prep area for customers. Some might ask — at what cost? It certainly is not pocket change to purchase a bottle of juice at The Juice Laundry, with costs starting at roughly $11 per bottle. The University’s inclusion of The Juice Laundry on dining plans shows that it may be committed to empowering students to make healthy choices, but these choices come at a cost.
Not every restaurant on Grounds requires money for its food. Students with a meal plan have the option of using meal “exchanges,” which allow them to choose from pre-set menu options that come at no additional cost. But upon examination of the menus for each of these places, I find that healthy options are sparse. At West Range Cafe, the two meal exchange choices that could be considered healthy — a salad and a caesar wrap — often sell out by the middle of lunch time. The other options are chicken tenders and fries, a grilled cheese or a NoBull burger — not exactly the most nutritious foods that college students might be searching for.
The reality of the situation remains that, no matter where students live, they spend most of their time on Grounds and either have to pay an excessive amount of money, eat exclusively at dining halls or drive to a grocery store themselves to get food containing fresh fruit and vegetables. That is, of course, unless one wants to eat at the Castle every day of the week — albeit not on the weekends, when the restaurant is closed. For first-year students without cars — or upper-class students without meal plans — this means an even more complicated search for healthy options. It is impossible to notice a striking contradiction to the statement made about health and wellness on the University’s dining website. Does the University empower students to eat well? By providing meal exchange options that feature fried or vegetable-absent food, the answer is a definite no. As for the other part of the statement, the dining service claims it is passionate about “dining programs that make it easy to eat well.” Based on the evidence reviewed, it is anything but easy to eat well while living on Grounds.
If the University wants to commit to its mission statement about health and wellness, it need not look any further than current establishments. There is no need to build new restaurants, just take the same approach it took at the Castle and revamp its menus. With a mission and a method already in place, the University simply needs to follow through.

Alabama has the football and the lead as the tone of this game has changed dramatically here in the third quarter. Hooker’s first INT since Nov. 13, 2021 against Georgia. Since being down 28-10, Alabama has outscored Tennessee 25-6 with points on five straight drives. The missed PAT looms large for the Vols at the moment, as does that defensive pass interference call in the end zone. Tennessee had multiple chances to bring Young down after a series of self-inflicted Alabama errors. In the end, the Vols bailed them out. But Tennessee fans will rightly question the validity of the PI call.

Microsoft has announced that animated avatars are now available in preview for its Teams collaboration platform.
Via the Avatars app in the Microsoft Teams App Store, members of the Technical Access Program can now design up to three avatars for use during meetings, and choose from an array of reaction gestures.
So-called Mesh avatars were first announced for Microsoft Teams in a blog post (opens in new tab) by John Roach, the company’s CTO of digital advisory services, back in November 2021.

Mesh avatars allow for greater freedom of expression in a hybrid working environment, with users able to customize physical attributes, accessories, and other aspects of themselves.
Microsoft’s release of the feature at its Ignite event reiterates its commitment to blurring the line between video conferencing software and metaverses, which some business leaders believe are the next big development in collaboration tools following the shift to hybrid working.
These spaces are designed around mesh avatars interacting inside a virtual space equipped with the tools that teams need to collaborate, such as whiteboards, document storage, and video conferencing software.
If Microsoft continues to develop metaverse-adjacent features for the Teams platform, it could manage to scupper Meta’s plans for the sector with its own Horizon Workrooms metaverse.
Horizon Workrooms could end up being seen as a less convenient offering when up against Teams, a video conferencing app that’s already in use by many organizations and benefits from Microsoft 365 integration.
Until then, organizations looking to try out the new mesh avatars but without access to the private preview build can sign up for updates on the Teams website (opens in new tab).

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 is a real head turner. It’s an Android smartphone that literally folds in half, like a book, which makes it one of the most unique phones on the market. And although you may not notice many major design changes on this year’s iteration, the Fold4 is certainly one of the best folding phones yet.

The recently released Samsung Z Galaxy Fold4 comes in three colours – Grey/Green, Phantom Black and Beige. All three have gorgeous, glossy metal edges, and a matte glass back, giving off a premium look whilst offering up a durable form factor. It even has IPX8 water resistance, which means it can survive submersion in up to 1.5m of freshwater for up to 30 minutes. I went with the Beige colour. All that was in the box besides the phone was a USB-C to USB-C charging cable and some documentation.
Favourite improved features
First and foremost this phone has two displays. A 6.2 inch front screen, which on this iteration has been slightly widened and has seriously improved the usability. And there’s the large 7.6 inch main screen that unfolds, offering up a tablet-style user experience. To be able to jump between these screens for different use cases is what makes this phone so useful.
This also means that multi-tasking on this phone is awesome. When holding the phone like a book, I love using applications in a split view which means I could have my web browser open on one side of the screen, my notes open on the other, even whilst sending a text message. When the phone is half closed, you could also have it sitting at a 90 degree angle on a table, so it holds itself up, to sit back and take a video call.
Something I love about this phone is that it also offers up S Pen compatibility (though you have to buy an S Pen separately). So if you were a fan of the Samsung Galaxy Note phones in the past you can expect the same functionally (or that of a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra) but with the additional ability to convert your workspace into a tablet form factor.
Samsung Galaxy ZFold 4 cameras
The cameras are seriously improved on the Fold4. The previous generation sported 12MP rear cameras. Now the phone is on par with the camera quality of the phones like the Samsung Galaxy S22, offering up a 12MP Ultra wide, a 50MP Wide Angle and a 10MP Telephoto camera with a 3x Optical Zoom.
These new back cameras immediately produce high quality snaps with excellent saturation, better depth of field and better sharpness. The video quality is also extremely impressive.
Conversely, the selfie cameras could still use a couple of tweaks. The front 10MP cover camera (as seen on the phone when closed) does a good job with selfies, however, the 4MP Under Display Camera leaves a lot to be desired.
But I must note, it’s literally under placed the internal flexible screen’s display, which is arguably a bonus. At the end of the day, it’s my least used camera lens on this phone anyway, but if needed, gets the job done.
Is the Samsung Galaxy Fold4 worth it?
Due to the more efficient chip in the Fold4 the battery life has improved. It easily lasts a full day of heavy use and sometimes longer. And sure, the phone’s a little bit thick, it’s kind of like having two phones in your pocket stacked on top of one another. However, you’d be surprised that it doesn’t feel a lot heavier than a typical smartphone. In fact it’s only around 30g heavier than a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.
Fold4 price
My only real drawback with this phone is that it’s seriously pricey, starting at a whopping $2499. However, I know a lot of people make the switch to the Fold4 as it removes the need to carry around a tablet or laptop in addition to their mobile phone. And if you’re someone who thrives when using a tablet, stylus, or a small display with multi-tasking capabilities, then this all-in-one phone could be perfect for you.

Breaking: Google taps Coinbase to bring crypto payments to cloud services
Starting in early 2023, Coinbase’s payment service, Coinbase Commerce, will facilitate crypto payments for customers purchasing Google’s cloud services thanks to a deal between the two companies. SEC rejects WisdomTree’s application for a spot Bitcoin ETF… again
Following multiple delays, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has denied WisdomTree’s spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) proposal, which the firm filed in January. The SEC cited fears of market manipulation and fraud as the rationale for its decision, which is consistent with its previous rationale for denying spot Bitcoin ETFs. The SEC also denied a spot Bitcoin ETF proposal from WisdomTree in 2021.
PayPal says policy to punish users for misinformation was ‘in error’
PayPal’s Acceptable Use Policy was set to change in early November to include a $2,500 fine for any platform users that promote, post, send or publicize so-called “misinformation.” PayPal has since claimed that the policy provision was added in error. “PayPal is not fining people for misinformation and this language was never intended to be inserted in our policy,” said PayPal. BTC price hits 3-week lows on US CPI as Bitcoin liquidates $57M
For most of the week, Bitcoin traded sideways, slightly favoring the downside, according to Cointelegraph’s BTC price index. The asset sustained a fair bit of price volatility on Oct. 13, however, in line with the release of September’s U.S. inflation data. Bitcoin’s price dropped down near $18,200 following the news but subsequently rebounded above $19,000.
In an Oct. 13 post, pseudonymous Twitter user il Capo of Crypto tweeted about the possibility of Bitcoin’s drop being a bear trap, noting a potential subsequent rally to $21,000, followed by a stark drop.

US Treasury’s OFAC and FinCEN announce $29M in enforcement actions against Bittrex
Crypto exchange Bittrex faces charges from two different United States regulators: the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). The regulatory authorities have essentially alleged that Bittrex did not conduct proper due diligence on its customers and transactions between 2014 and 2018, which allowed users from sanctioned regions to use the platform. Bittrex confirmed it would settle with OFAC for around $24 million, which may also be applied as a credit toward its $29 million settlement owed to FinCEN. Looking to move forward from the situation, Bittrex stated that it has been up to date with expected standards since 2018.
$100M drained from Solana DeFi platform Mango Markets, token plunges 52%
Mango Markets, a decentralized finance platform running on the Solana blockchain, reportedly bled around $100 million from its treasury thanks to an exploit. Someone manipulated price data for the platform’s native MNGO asset, letting them borrow crypto worth far more than the value of the MNGO they put up as collateral. MNGO suffered a roughly 50% price drop following news of the event. Later reporting saw the hacker coming forward, demanding a $70 million bug reward and other terms to return exploited funds.
CNN to shut down its NFT marketplace and issue 20% refund
After about four months, media outlet CNN has decided to discontinue its nonfungible token (NFT) endeavor, seemingly another bear market casualty. The media company’s NFT project, known as Vault by CNN, essentially offered tokenized memories of historical news events spanning multiple decades through CNN’s history. The project’s roadmap projected six months of development, although the media outlet has since claimed the project was a “6-week experiment,” according to an announcement from the Vault by CNN Twitter account. The United States has drafted a United Nations Security Council resolution encouraging “the immediate deployment of a multinational rapid action force” to Haiti in response to the rapidly deteriorating security and humanitarian situation there, according to a copy of the resolution obtained by The Washington Post.
The drafting of the resolution follows a push by U.N. Secretary General António Guterres for the creation of an international force to bolster the Haitian National Police as powerful armed gangs destabilize the country, disrupting the supply of fuel and electricity to the impoverished Caribbean nation.
The resolution is the first sign the Biden administration may be willing to participate in a Haiti mission that has a military component. U.S. officials have been noncommittal when asked about requests to send U.S. forces to lessen the violence and misrule that has led to a shortage of clean drinking water and threatens to worsen a cholera outbreak.
The resolution does not identify specific countries that would participate in the rapid reaction force, nor does it spell out what roles those nations would play.
Neither the White House nor the State Department immediately responded to requests for comment about the draft resolution, which was first reported by the McClatchy news organization. A spokesperson for the Haitian government did not immediately respond to a request for comment either.
A Pentagon spokesman, Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, declined to comment.
A person familiar with discussions underway within the U.S. government, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the matter is considered sensitive, said that any American military personnel involved in a Haiti mission would likely provide logistical support only. This person said they were unaware of any plans to put U.S. “boots on the ground.”
The United States has long been reluctant to deploy military forces in Haiti. On Wednesday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States would accelerate the provision of humanitarian aid to Haiti, and “increase and deploy” security assistance for the country’s national police “in coming days.” He did not specify what that could entail, saying only that the aim was to “strengthen their capacity to counter gangs and reestablish a stable security environment under the rule of law.”
In last week’s proposal, Guterres recommended that countries send a rapid-response force that would be followed by a mission led by the United Nations. In the draft resolution reviewed by The Post, which a diplomat said was up-to-date as of Friday, the United States is “encouraging the immediate deployment of a multinational rapid action force to support the [Haitian National Police], as recommended in the Secretary General’s letter.”
It is unclear the degree to which other members of the U.N. Security Council support such a move, if China or Russia would veto the proposal, or if the current draft may change substantially before being proposed by the United States as soon as Monday.
The resolution also imposes an arms embargo, asset freeze and travel ban on criminal elements in Haiti. It singles out Haitian gang leader Jimmy Cherizier, who is known as Barbecue, as someone who has “engaged in acts that threaten the peace, security, and stability of Haiti and has planned, directed, or committed acts that constitute serious human rights abuses.”
Last month, Cherizier, who leads the group G9 Family and Allies, blocked access to Varreux Terminal in Port-au-Prince, the capital. The port is responsible for about 70 percent of the fuel distributed in the country.
Cherizier is seeking a change in the leadership of the country, governed since last year by Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who assumed power after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. Moïse’s killing remains unsolved.
The blockade has exacerbated a dire economic and social situation in Haiti. Hospitals are running out of fuel in the middle of a resurgence of cholera early this month. Banks are open three days a week, as opposed to six normally. At least one bank branch is scheduled to close next week due to fuel scarcity.
According to the World Food Program, 4.7 million people in Haiti face varying degrees of hunger, with an estimated 19,000 experiencing what the organization considers catastrophic levels.
Port-au-Prince is increasingly becoming an isolated island with gangs, often tied to the political and economic class, blocking the main roads, all but eliminating connection to the north and the south of the country. Their grip renders it extremely difficult for humanitarian assistance to reach those in needs.
Outgunned by the gangs, the Haitian National Police has lost control of the situation. Local media reported that in recent days a gang seized an armored vehicle and stole the equipment inside.
On Saturday, a first batch of security equipment ordered from Canada arrived in Haiti. The shipment includes armored vehicles intended to help police fight back against the gangs.

Will Wilkerson, then an executive at former president Donald Trump’s start-up Trump Media & Technology Group, was at a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., coffee shop with company co-founder Andy Litinsky last October when Trump called Litinsky with a question: Would he give up some of his shares to Trump’s wife, Melania?
Trump Media, the owner of the fledgling social network Truth Social, had just been boosted by a huge merger agreement and a flood of investment that had made the stake worth millions of dollars. Trump had already been given 90 percent of the company’s shares in exchange for the use of his name and some minor involvement, leaving everyone else to split the rest.
Litinsky tried to brush it off, telling Trump “the gift would have meant a huge tax bill he couldn’t pay,” Wilkerson said in an interview. “Trump didn’t care. He said, ‘Do whatever you need to do.’ ”
Five months later, Litinsky, who first met Trump in 2004 as a contestant on the TV show “The Apprentice,” was abruptly removed from the company’s board. Wilkerson said he believes it was payback for his refusal to turn over a small fortune to the former president’s wife. Litinsky thought so, too, according to an email Wilkerson and his attorneys shared with The Washington Post and the Securities and Exchange Commission. In that email, Litinsky complained that Trump was “retaliating against me” by threatening to “ ‘blow up the company’ if his demands are not met.”
Litinsky did not respond to emails and phone messages. It is unknown whether he still retains his shares.
The email — one of hundreds of previously unreported company messages, documents, photos and audio recordings that Wilkerson has provided to the SEC in connection with a whistleblower submission — reveals a stunning portrait of the animosity that has built up inside Trump Media since its high-profile debut last year.
Promoted as the centerpiece of Trump’s post-presidential business ambitions, the company had marketed itself as a budding media empire, with enterprises planned in social media, video streaming, live events and online payments — a powerful rival not just to Twitter but Disney, Google and Amazon.
But inside the company, Wilkerson said, those plans gave way to bitter infighting, technical failures and a chaotic jockeying for power among Trump allies that undermined its potential and left some employees crying at their desks.
Wilkerson, who was fired from his job Thursday as a senior vice president of operations at the company after he spoke to The Post, filed the whistleblower complaint with the SEC in August. The complaint, drafted by Wilkerson’s attorneys, alleges that the company’s bid to raise money via an investment vehicle known as a special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, relied on “fraudulent misrepresentations … in violation of federal securities laws.”
The SEC, a federal watchdog agency, allows members of the public to submit tips, complaints and referrals about suspected financial wrongdoing via a document the agency calls a Form TCR. Whistleblowers can be granted confidentiality protections and, in some cases, financial awards. Litinsky did not join in the complaint.
Wilkerson is cooperating with investigations into Trump Media by the SEC and federal prosecutors from the Southern District of New York, said his attorneys, Phil Brewster, Patrick Mincey and Stephen Bell. Among the materials he filed with the SEC’s whistleblower office is a detailed, day-to-day computer log compiled by company co-founder Wes Moss, Litinsky and Wilkerson about their daily company-related activities.
He also provided to The Post a copy of that log as well as numerous other memos, photographs and videos that chronicled the creation of Trump Media. All of the materials Wilkerson shared with The Post were previously provided to government investigators, his attorneys said.
The SEC and the SDNY declined to comment.
In an SEC filing in December, Digital World acknowledged that the SEC was investigating and had sought documents related to the merger with Trump Media. In another filing in June, Digital World said it had become aware that a federal grand jury in the Southern District of New York had issued subpoenas to its board members seeking documents related to its initial public offering filings and “communications with or about multiple individuals.” The investigations, the company said, could “impede or prevent” the merger.
Wilkerson said he was still working for the company on Oct. 6 when his SEC complaint was first reported by the Miami Herald. A Trump Media attorney sent Wilkerson a letter that night suspending him for what the lawyer said was a “blatant violation” of his nondisclosure agreement.
After interviewing Wilkerson alongside his attorneys, The Post on Wednesday sent a detailed list of claims and questions raised by Wilkerson’s allegations to representatives for Trump, Trump Media and the Trump Organization, Trump’s long-running family business.
Only Trump Media responded, saying in a statement that Trump, as company chairman, had hired former congressman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) as CEO to “create a culture of compliance and build a world-class team to lead Truth Social.” The company said it was already a success, having launched on the Apple and Google app stores, “executed multiple feature updates” and attracted millions of users. “Ignoring these achievements, The Washington Post sent us an inquiry rife with knowingly false and defamatory statements and other concocted psychodramas.” The statement did not directly address any of Wilkerson’s claims.
Trump Media fired Wilkerson on Thursday, citing his “unauthorized disclosures” to The Post. Brewster, his attorney, called the termination “patent retaliation against an SEC whistleblower of the worst kind.”
Digital World Acquisition, the SPAC that is pushing to take Trump Media public, has asked shareholders to give the company more time to finalize the merger, which would unlock hundreds of millions of dollars for Trump Media but is effectively frozen pending the outcomes of the federal investigations. Digital World and its chief executive, Patrick Orlando, did not respond to requests for comment.
The revelations to the SEC from Wilkerson, the most prominent company official to speak publicly about its operations, come at a turbulent time for Trump Media’s business. Investors, discouraged by the halted merger, have sent the SPAC’s share price plunging from a high of $175 to less than $18 on Friday. Roughly 4 million users follow Trump on the company’s sole product, Truth Social — far below his Twitter peak of 88 million. The company has pledged to investors it would surpass 50 million total users by 2024.
In past public statements, Nunes, Orlando and Trump have argued that Trump Media will ultimately prove to be a successful business. But Wilkerson said he expects its internal problems could lead the company to fall apart.
“We weren’t trying to be Trump Org 2.0,” he said. “We always saw Trump as the rocket fuel to send this thing to space. I wanted this to succeed more than anything. … But these are glaring issues, and they’re threatening me now for calling them out. I couldn’t stay quiet anymore.”
Wilkerson, 38, isn’t a traditional Trump critic.
When Litinsky and Moss, another former “Apprentice” contestant, first started discussing the idea of a multipronged Trump media business after Trump’s November 2020 election loss, the men had asked for his help developing the business, Wilkerson said. A former executive producer for Litinsky’s conservative radio show, Wilkerson was excited about monetizing the following of a person he considered a master marketer with 40 years as a political and household name.
Wilkerson shared a photo from that time of the men sketching the original concept on a whiteboard, titled “Trump’s New Media Empire,” that would ultimately compose the company’s public pitch, including new business lines (“Trump Digital Subscription,” “Trump Documentaries”) and a chain of “Trump technologies,” including in servers and online payments.
After Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and Trump was banned from major social networks, the men drew up plans for a tech platform that would be “resilient to cancel culture and the impact of bias against the right,” according to the daily log Wilkerson shared with The Post and the SEC.
To meet with Trump, the men sought help from another “Apprentice” contestant, Bradford Cohen, a Florida criminal-defense attorney who represented two rappers, Lil Wayne and Kodak Black, to whom Trump had granted clemency on his final day in the White House.

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar provided details on Saturday regarding an overnight arrest involving an off-duty deputy.
Sheriff Salazar said that days ago, investigators intercepted phone calls from an inmate and a woman who were making plans for the woman to meet up with an off-duty deputy and exchange drugs.
Investigators found the woman leaving a fast-food restaurant on Callaghan Road on Friday around 9 p.m. As she was leaving the restaurant, they saw her going to a white vehicle near the property to make the exchange.
After the exchange, the vehicle drove off, but was later stopped by the BCSO special operations team. They found the driver was 20 -year-old Isaiah Palomo, who was a probation deputy.
Salazar said he was found with cocaine in the vehicle and arrested. Palomo has been fired and charged with possession of controlled substance, which is a 2nd degree felony. The woman was also arrested and charged with intent to deliver, which is a 1st degree felony. She has since been identified as 24-year-old Hollisha Janay-Lastar Nealy.
The inmate has been identified as 24-year-old Deandre Ross. BCSO says his charges include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, evading arrest with a vehicle, possession with intent to deliver and parole violation.

One Jimmy Buffett-themed makeover later, the ship is a perfect fit for the laid-back vibe of the Bahamas. Grab a drink or a bite to eat from the 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill, try your luck at the Par-A-Dice Casino and enjoy plenty of entertainment including the musical production, “Tales from Margaritaville: Jimmy’s Ship Show.” There’s a kids club, a teen club, a spa and two pools stocked with beach balls and inflatable parrots.
The two-night cruise itinerary includes one day in Freeport where you can shop, hit the casino, enjoy water sports or chill on the beach. The ship offers shore excursions, or you can explore independently. Ports of call include Nassau along with either Bimini or Key West, both of which are fun ports and yours may be the only ship in port at either of them.
Summit is among the line’s smaller ships and carries just over 2,000 passengers, while the decade younger Silhouette has a capacity approaching 3,000. Either ship offers a quieter choice for a Bahamas cruise when compared to the big-ship, mass-market lines that cruise there year-round. Think posh resort more than theme park. Neither ship has slides or extravagant water play features. Children are welcome and the line has a kids’ program onboard, but overall, the ship is geared toward couples, with the average age onboard over 50.
Who should go? Celebrity’s ships are best left to lovers of a less frenetic style of cruising. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has suspended Mr Yaw Danso, District Chief Executive (DCE) of Bosome Freho, over his alleged involvement in illegal mining “galamsey” activities in the District.
This comes after the leaking of a video in which he was allegedly encouraging “galamsey” activities in the area.
The suspension is contained in a letter from Mr Dan Botwe, Minister for Local Government and Regional Organisation, which asked the DCE to step aside for investigations into the audio.
The Minister stressed in the letter that the suspension was to pave way for investigations to verify the authenticity of the tape.
President Akufo-Addo in his resolve to address the illegal mining menace, has called on all stakeholders, including government officials, chiefs and community members, to join in the fight.
The President, at a recent meeting with traditional leaders and Metropolitan, Municipal, District Chief Executives, among other government officials, warned that persons caught in the act would face full rigours of the law.
