Fox Business Network Celebrates 15th Anniversary: Liz Claman Says so Much Fight Helped Network Thrive Fox News
Fox Business Network Celebrates 15th Anniversary: Liz Claman Says so Much Fight Helped Network Thrive Fox News
Fox Business Network Celebrates 15th Anniversary: Liz Claman Says ‘so Much Fight’ Helped Network Thrive – Fox News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/fox-business-network-celebrates-15th-anniversary-liz-claman-says-so-much-fight-helped-network-thrive-fox-news/ Fox Business Network launched on October 15, 2007 as America was on the precipice of a financial crisis, and a unique approach to covering business news that prioritizes Main Street as much as Wall Street has helped the network thrive as it celebrates its 15th anniversary on Saturday.  “Fox Business is, in my opinion, a living television miracle, and I’m not being overly dramatic here. I truly mean it because we have so many moments that we can remember, especially all of the originals, where we were just flying by the seat of our pants,” longtime anchor Liz Claman told Fox News Digital She explained that FBN “went up in the air like an airplane, but we were still riveting the wings on,” so Claman and other original hosts weren’t exactly ready.  “But we just went for it. And 15 years later, it is such an honor to even think back to some of these hilarious memories. I mean, we really, at certain points couldn’t get a single stock chart up and we would sit there. David Asman and I and Charles [Payne] and Neil Cavuto, we would just talk and talk and talk and do the best we could,” Claman said.  Fox Business Network President Lauren Petterson and the network’s stars celebrated FBN’s 15th anniversary by ringing the Nasdaq opening bell. (FOX) NEIL CAVUTO LOOKS BACK AT 15 YEARS OF FOX BUSINESS NETWORK: ‘WE TAKE STOCK OF THE COUNTRY’ But Claman and other FBN hosts weren’t only talking to each other, and she was able to land billionaire investor Warren Buffett her first day on the air.  “We were able to convince him, and it didn’t even take that much effort to convince him, that Fox Business, a Fox network that was going to focus on business, was going to – maybe not immediately, but going to be worthy someday… and he was smart enough to know to do that,” Claman said.  Claman believes much of the success stems from the network’s ability to land Fortune 500 CEOs, Treasury secretaries, and just about every key newsmaker from the financial sector despite attempts from other business networks to keep influential guests away. “There was this was a line that they used to say, ‘There are more people in your building lobby than there are watching Fox Business,’ but guess what? What our competitors did not take into account is, No. 1, you don’t tell winners, people who have made it to the top of their industries, or the top of government, how and where to get their message out,” Claman said. “No. 2, they didn’t take into account that it is not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog. We may have been the Chihuahua to start, and they were the Great Danes, but we had so much fight.” FOX BUSINESS NETWORK CELEBRATES 15TH ANNIVERSARY BY RINGING ICONIC NASDAQ OPENING BELL Liz Claman has been with Fox Business Network since it launched in 2007.  Fox Business Network has come a long way since then and recently ended the third quarter of 2022 with a larger Business Day audience than CNBC for the second straight quarter. Claman said she’s proud of just about everything the network has done over the past 15 years, but one accomplishment truly stands out.  “It’s when we finally started winning. It’s when we finally started beating CNBC,” she said.  “I mean, they were the Goliath and we were the David. And in 2018, we just covered the presidential election better and from a better business standpoint than anybody else was,” she continued. “And we were rewarded for that by viewers who were craving exactly that, and to have started in 2007 and taken all those years to finally get that recognition, I was levitating… I still am.” Neil Cavuto believes Fox Business Network’s “no-nonsense, no-jargon” approach to covering the business news helped democratized an entire industry.  (FOX) While Claman pointed to ratings success, Charles Payne, another original Fox Business Network host, struggled to think of a specific moment that he considers the most memorable “It’s hard for me to pick, there have been so many of them that have stood out, particularly over the time period that we’ve been on because we came on during a crisis, and you know, we had one crisis and then we had another crisis… and now we’re in another crisis,” Payne said. “No joke, it just feels like each day stands out in its own sort of way.” FOX NEWS CRUSHES MSNBC, CNN TO FINISH WITH CABLE’S LARGEST AUDIENCE FOR 40TH STRAIGHT WEEK Payne believes Fox Business Network has thrived because it acts like a news network and “puts the viewer first,” and related to all Americans instead of solely targeting Wall Street investors.  “We’re not there just speaking jargon to each other, trying to impress each other. And I think that’s really one of the things that separates it from what’s out there,” Payne said.   Claman said she always knew FBN would eventually prevail because it was a superior product, but the support of FOX Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch is what truly put the network on the map.  “Never once in the years where we were not winning, we were floundering… never once did he say, ‘You guys, if you don’t make this happen, I’m pulling the plug,’” Claman said. “We watched as other networks went dark… they don’t have the vision that Rupert Murdoch does. And never once did he say, ‘I’m done. This isn’t working.’ He knew it takes time and it takes persistence, and as long as we were all throwing everything we had at it, he was going to stick by us. And I am so grateful that he did it.”  FOX BUSINESS NETWORK ANNOUNCES NEW SEASON OF FBN PRIME TO MARK 15TH ANNIVERSARY As Fox Business celebrates 15 years on the air, Payne is already thinking about the next decade and a half.  “For investors watching financial media, they’re going to want to see over the next 15 years some of the promises come to fruition, because we just really had individual investors only get involved in the market in mass in the 1970s, thanks to Charles Schwab and some of the things that he did that were initially lower commission and then now you have the commissions that are even a lot lower than that. But then you had all these amazing products that have been put out there, mutual funds, exchange traded funds, packaged products, and they all came with promises,” Payne said.  “And they’re about 20-something old right now. I don’t know that the majority of them are living up to the initial hype, but Americans have bought it to the tune of trillions of dollars. And so I think over the next 10 to 15 years, Americans are going to be inclined to invest more. To buy into the story more. They want a piece of the action, and they should. They’re also going to be on the lookout for the payoff,” Payne continued, predicting new ways for people to make fortunes. “I think it’s going to be an exciting time. We’re in the fourth industrial revolution.” FBN’s Charles Payne has been with the network since it launched on October 15, 2007. (fox news) Fox Business Network President Lauren Petterson and many of the network’s stars – including Claman and Payne – celebrated FBN’s 15th anniversary by ringing the NASDAQ opening bell on Friday morning. Earlier this month, Fox Business announced the return of its popular programming lineup, FBN Prime, that will continue to celebrate success stories across key American industries.  CLICK TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP Brian Flood is a media reporter for Fox News Digital. Childrens Health Chief Calls For Free School Meals For All To End disturbing Food Poverty The Independent
Childrens Health Chief Calls For Free School Meals For All To End disturbing Food Poverty The Independent
Children’s Health Chief Calls For Free School Meals For All To End ‘disturbing’ Food Poverty – The Independent https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/childrens-health-chief-calls-for-free-school-meals-for-all-to-end-disturbing-food-poverty-the-independent/ The government must offer all children free school meals to address the country’s “profoundly disturbing” food poverty rates, the NHS’ most senior paediatrician says. To make change happen, please sign the Feed the Future petition by clicking here Camilla Kingdon, president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, warned the cost of living crisis was forcing struggling families to turn to unhealthy food and called on the government to act. She said it was often cheaper for parents to feed their children junk food, as food prices continue to soar, and this was impacting children’s health, from poor growth rates to obesity. She wants the government to step up support by giving all children, not just those in low-income families, free school meals. In an exclusive interview with The Independent, she said: “There’s something profoundly disturbing about the picture of a hungry child struggling through the school day. The reality of modern Britain is that to feed your children a healthy diet is a challenge, and we only expect that to become more of a problem as this cost-of-living crisis continues.” “The government should fund free school meals for all children to remove the current stigma of free school meals. Offering a healthy meal at school is an important opportunity to promote health for every child in the UK.” ( ) Her calls come as The Independent has launched a campaign calling for free school meals for all children whose families received universal credit. According to Action on Child Poverty, 800,000 children living in poverty do not qualify for free school meals. That figure includes households that receive universal credit, but whose income is more than £7,400 a year, excluding benefits. This threshold applies regardless of family size or living conditions, meaning that while these families are living in poverty, they are not considered poor enough to qualify for school meals. Dr Kingdon supported calls for free school meals for those on universal credit but said the government should go further and offer them to all. Research published last week by Impact on Urban Health suggested expanding free school meals to all children could boost the economy by £41bn, in increased future earnings and savings from related healthcare costs. Camilla Kingdon, president, Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health says parents were also skipping meals to feed their children (RCPCH) In 2020, more than 2,000 paediatricians sent a letter to the prime minister calling for vouchers for free meals during school holidays in the wake of the first Covid wave. When asked what paediatricians are witnessing in relation to the cost of living Dr Kingdon said: “The cost of food has risen dramatically. Parents have no other option but to buy cheaper, lower quality and less nutritious food for their children. It is cheaper to put chicken nuggets and chips on a plate than it is to buy fruit and vegetables. These parents are doing the very best they can in impossible circumstances. “Paediatricians see the impacts of poor nutrition with both poor growths of deprived babies and children on the one hand, and rising child obesity on the other. We’re also seeing an impact in parents too. It’s not uncommon to see parents skipping meals in order to feed their children or pay their bills. It’s heartbreaking.” Have you been impacted by the rising cost of food? email rebecca.thomas@independent.co.uk In November last year, NHS Digital published data revealed the rates of childhood obesity in 2020-21 had increased by 4.5 per cent, with 14 per cent of children aged four to five years old now obese. Public Health data shows the proportion of children in low-income households increased by 15 per cent during the same period. Dr Kingdon warned: “Children with iron deficiency anaemia is just the start. We’ll start seeing children who are less resilient – more inclined to get sick than a child with access to nutritious food. “How can we expect a hungry child to engage in education and learn to the best of their abilities? It’s unfair to ask this of them. And of course, there are behavioural problems associated with being hungry… Teachers are already telling us about this. Many teachers even pay to feed students out of their own pockets. It’s a dreadful situation.” The Department for Education has been approached for comment.

Week 7 in college football is going to be one of the wildest weekends yet.  No. 3 Alabama will head to Rocky Top to take on No. 6 Tennessee in the annual rivalry known as the “Third Saturday in October.” The Volunteers will be looking to break the Crimson Tide’s 15-game winning streak in the series, and firmly establish themselves as a threat to make the College Football Playoff. Elsewhere, No. 10 Penn State is on the road to take on No. 5 Michigan in a critical Big Ten East showdown, No. 8 Oklahoma State will square off with No. 13 TCU, No. 15 Syracuse will look to stay undefeated against No. 18 NC State and No. 7 USC will head to Salt Lake City to take on No. 20 Utah in a critical Pac-12 matchup. It’ll be a busy Saturday across the country, so here’s a handy viewer’s guide to help you navigate the action. All times Eastern. The best games No. 10 Penn State at No. 5 Michigan — noon on Fox, fuboTV (Try for free): The Nittany Lions have had two weeks to get ready for the biggest game of the young season. Quarterback Sean Clifford and the dynamic Nittany Lions offense will have a massive challenge against a Wolverines defense that has been one of the best in the country all season. No. 3 Alabama at No. 6 Tennessee — 3:30 p.m. on CBS, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App: Will Crimson Tide quarterback and 2021 Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young play? He missed last week with a sprained shoulder, and might be needed to lead a high-scoring affair against a Volunteers offense led by Heisman Trophy contender Hendon Hooker.  No. 8 Oklahoma State at No. 13 TCU — 3:30 p.m. on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free): The undefeated Horned Frogs, led by veteran quarterback Max Duggan and a host of receivers, have been one of the biggest surprises of the season. Meanwhile, the Cowboys have just been rolling along … lurking on the fringe of the CFP race. Both of these teams need signature wins, and this is a perfect spot to put one on the resume. No. 15 NC State at No. 18 Syracuse — 3:30 p.m. on ACC Network, fuboTV (Try for free): The Wolfpack need to get a win in order to stay in the ACC title race, and could be missing (or without a completely healthy) Devin Leary under center. The Orange will have a huge home-field advantage in the biggest game of the Dino Babers era, and would make a huge statement with a win over ranked foe in a conference game. No. 16 Mississippi State at No. 22 Kentucky — 7:30 p.m. on SEC Network, fuboTV (Try for free): The status of Wildcats quarterback Will Levis is up in the air, and they have struggled to run the ball on a consistent basis. Owning the time of possession battle might be critical against a Bulldogs offense that can put up points in a hurry. No. 7 USC at No. 20 Utah — 8 p.m. on Fox, fuboTV (Try for free): The Trojans are actually underdogs against the Utes despite an ultra-dynamic offense and opportunistic defense. This prime-time game could be a chance for Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams to make a big statement against a Utes defense that struggled last week vs. UCLA. Best of the rest Auburn at No. 9 Ole Miss — noon on ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free) No. 19 Kansas at Oklahoma — noon on ESPN2, fuboTV (Try for free) Iowa State at No. 22 Texas — noon on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free) Minnesota at No. 24 Illinois — noon on Big Ten Network, fuboTV (Try for free) Colgate at Army — noon on CBS Sports Network, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App Vanderbilt at No. 1 Georgia — 3:30 p.m. on SEC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) Ohio at Western Michigan — 3:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App No. 25 James Madison at Georgia Southern — 4 p.m. on ESPN+ LSU at Florida — 7 p.m. on ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free) Utah State at Colorado State — 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App No. 4 Clemson at Florida State — 7:30 p.m. on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free) Stanford at Notre Dame — 7:30 p.m. on NBC, fuboTV (Try for free)

Binance Announces $500 Million Funding For Bitcoin Mining – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/binance-announces-500-million-funding-for-bitcoin-mining-cryptonews/ Source: AdobeStock / Iryna Budanova Binance Pool, the crypto mining services arm of cryptocurrency exchange Binance, aims to support Bitcoin miners to weather the crypto winter with a $500 million loan.  The ongoing bear market has had deep impacts on almost all industry participants, particularly miners. Amid rising fuel and electricity prices and the crypto market downturn, this cohort has been hit the most, with many miners proceeding to shut down their machines as profitability becomes negligible.  In a bid to help miners and in turn, help the broader crypto market from further damage, Binance Pool, one of the world’s largest crypto mining pools, has decided to offer a $500 million loan to support Bitcoin miners, the company said in a Friday blog post.   “Binance Pool has a responsibility to help maintain a healthy digital asset ecosystem,” the post read. “In light of current market conditions, Binance Pool is launching a $500million lending project to support crypto miners and digital infrastructure providers.” The report detailed that both “public and private blue-chip bitcoin (BTC) mining and digital asset infrastructure companies globally” would be able to secure debt through this initiative and finance their services.  Some terms of the loans include “an 18 to a 24-month term,” interest rates ranging from 5% to 10, and “offering security, either physical or digital assets, satisfactory to Binance.”  Aside from Binance, other major industry players have also taken measures to support struggling crypto miners. For one, Jihan Wu, the founder of crypto mining rig-maker Bitmain, plans to set up a $250 million fund to purchase distressed assets from mining firms. “There are opportunities in every cycle,” Matt Kong, chief executive officer of Bitdeer, reportedly said. “If you can time the market and enter at the bottom, come out at the top, then you will make money. It works especially well for mining.”  Bitcoin Hashrate Hits New ATH On Tuesday, the total hashrate of the Bitcoin network reached a fresh all-time high, suggesting that miners are now more optimistic about the bitcoin price as they have become online despite consistently low BTC prices. The Bitcoin hashrate is a measure of the amount of computing power that is dedicated to mining BTC and securing the network. An increasing hashrate means that more mining machines are coming online, which could signal rising optimism among miners about bitcoin prices going forward. Data from Blockchain.com shows that the total Bitcoin hashrate hit 241.88 Ehash/s last week, up significantly from this year’s low of 168.2 Ehash/s in early January. The all-time high was reached when looking at the data on a 7-day moving average basis, an often-used way to smooth out shorter-term fluctuations in the hashrate on the Bitcoin network.

Dallas Could Raise Its Hotel Tax In November The Dallas Morning News
Dallas Could Raise Its Hotel Tax In November The Dallas Morning News
Dallas Could Raise Its Hotel Tax In November – The Dallas Morning News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/dallas-could-raise-its-hotel-tax-in-november-the-dallas-morning-news/ Dallas voters go to the polls in a few weeks to decide whether to increase the amount of taxes collected for hotel and other room rentals from 13% to 15% to pay for a new convention center and Fair Park venue renovations. So why are some people saying the true tax rate would be 17%? As usual, the devil is in the details: People who get rooms at Dallas’ larger hotels will indeed be forking over 17% of their bill to the government. But that extra 2% — called a fee or assessment — has been around for a while and is not called a tax. The city collects hotel occupancy taxes on hotels, motels, short-term rentals and bed and breakfast properties in Dallas. The current rate is 13% of the cost of a room. Currently, seven of those percentage points go to the city and six to the state. Proposition A on the ballot for the Nov. 8 election suggests voters increase the city’s share to nine points. The new two percentage point tax increase could raise $1.5 billion over 30 years. That hotel occupancy tax increase is to help pay for a new downtown convention center, currently estimated to cost $2 billion. It’s planned to be built adjacent to the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, which would be torn down. And up to 20% of the $1.5 billion can also go toward renovating six venues about three miles away at Fair Park, including the Cotton Bowl and the Coliseum. Early voting begins Oct. 24 and ends Nov. 4. Related:What single biggest capital investment in Fair Park since 1936 looks like if Dallas voters say yes But what about this other 2% that people are already paying for hotel rooms? Patrons of Dallas hotels with at least 100 rooms are now also charged a 2% assessment on room rentals. That fee comes from the city’s Tourism Public Improvement District, which since 2012 has generated cash to help market and promote Dallas as a tourism destination. It doesn’t apply to other room rentals like short-term rentals. Technically, it is not a tax, so there’s no mention of it on the ballot. But if you stay at one of the larger hotels in Dallas, it certainly comes out of your wallet. More than 130 hotels are part of the Tourism Public Improvement District. Fewer than 10 are located below Interstate 30, which is commonly viewed as the city’s midpoint that divides wealthier northern and less wealthy southern Dallas. Here are some other facts about the hotel occupancy tax and Proposition A. What the tax pays for Around two-thirds of the hotel occupancy taxes received by the city currently go to paying for the operations and improvements for the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. Close to 25% goes to VisitDallas, a nonprofit contracted by the city to promote Dallas as a convention and visitor destination. The rest goes to the city’s arts and culture office. What other cities collect The 17% total that goes to the government for hotel room rentals would put Dallas in line with other major Texas cities. Houston, San Antonio, Austin, El Paso and Fort Worth have total rates around the same amount. San Antonio, for example, has a total rate of up to 18%. That includes the 6% state cut, 9% city cut, 1.75% Bexar County cut and a 1.25% fee tied to the San Antonio Tourism Public Improvement District that applies for hotels with at least 100 rooms. Austin, Fort Worth and El Paso also already keep 9% of their cities’ hotel occupancy tax, which is the amount Dallas would keep from most hotels, motels and all short-term rentals if voters approve the proposition. Fair Park work The hotel occupancy tax funding method is more commonly referred to as the Brimer Bill, after former state Rep. Kim Brimer, R-Arlington. It’s a state law that allows cities to use an increase in taxes on hotels and vehicle rentals to repay bonds to build venues like convention centers, sports arenas and entertainment districts. Voters have to approve its use beforehand. Hotel occupancy taxes were similarly used only once before in Dallas, when voters in the late 1990s approved a 2% increase, as well as a 5% car rental fee increase, to help pay for building the American Airlines Center. Dallas-area state legislators in 2021 filed bills seeking to remove an exclusion in the Brimer Bill that banned the money from being used in an area or facility that’s part of a city park and recreation system as a way to include Fair Park. Related:New law could give Fair Park a $100 million shot in the arm and cost Dallas taxpayers nothing Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill into law in 2021 allowing Dallas to use up to 20% of the revenue from the hotel occupancy tax rate increase on costs related to only an amphitheater, arena, exhibit hall, music hall or stadium located within a municipally owned park. This would allow up to $300 million of the projected $1.5 billion from the new 2% tax increase to be used to renovate the Cotton Bowl, the Coliseum, the Automobile Building, Centennial Hall, Music Hall and the Band Shell. If voters approve the proposition in November, the city would be banned from using general fund tax revenues and general obligation bonds for the six Fair Park venues. There’s no guarantee that Fair Park will get the full 20% of funding over 30 years if the proposition passes in November. While the Dallas City Council in April approved allowing the six venues be eligible for money from the tax increase, the language in the resolution is nonbinding. The resolution has a clause that orders the city, pending voter approval, to “use good faith efforts to spend 20% of the revenues derived from the new 2% hotel occupancy tax for the Fair Park facilities listed in the proposition.” What supporters say Proposition supporters say the venue revamps at both sites will help draw larger conventions and events to Dallas that will increase tourism, pave the way for the creation of a new entertainment district around the convention center and can create new jobs through the construction work and new amenities that are built. A political action committee called the Transforming Dallas Committee has been created to support the proposition. No organized opposition against the ballot measure has been announced. Not just tourists Supporters of the November election proposition have referred to the hotel occupancy tax as a “tourism tax” that will be paid for by out-of-town visitors. But it can trickle down to city residents, too, particularly people looking for temporary shelter. Hotels can also be used by people either without stable shelter or displaced from their homes, such as during the 2021 winter storm. In August, Dallas’ Office of Homeless Solutions Director Christine Crossley told council members that homeless service providers pay for hotel rooms for people to stay when shelter spaces are full. She suggested the city consider a standardized grant to give groups to subsidize their funding. “We confirm that it’s currently a successful model, and has been for quite some time,” Crossley said to council members when addressing whether expanding homeless shelter capacity via hotels was a viable option. “We don’t see that changing.” The City Council in September approved shifting $1 million in federal grant money that was projected to go unused for rapid rehousing services to help pay for sheltering in hotels. “A renewed and urgent need has been identified to expand shelter services, particularly overflow services, to hotels for individuals and families experiencing homelessness due to the recent loss of pandemic protections, rise in inflation, and scarcity of rental units,” the resolution said. Some who should pay might not Dallas requires short-term rental properties listed on platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo to register with the city and charge hotel occupancy taxes that are funneled to the government. But the city has no rules overseeing how short-term rentals are run and no regulations that lead to penalties for property owners who don’t register. The city in June reported having almost 1,300 active and registered short-term rental properties, but also estimated about the same amount of other properties that are unregistered. Other sources, such as data analytics website AirDNA, have claimed there are more than 5,000 active rentals in Dallas. That June, the city estimated receiving close to $2.6 million in hotel occupancy tax money from short-term rentals, compared to about $65 million from other hotel tax revenue and close to $16.6 million from the city’s tourism public improvement district. The city is currently considering zoning and registration changes to regulate short-term rentals. This isn’t the only way the city plans to pay for a new convention center The city also has a separate funding method for the new convention center. The state last year approved the city’s request to keep a portion of the state’s percentage of hotel sales taxes, hotel mixed-beverage taxes and hotel occupancy taxes collected from businesses within a three-mile radius of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. It will last for 30 years — until 2051 — and is expected to bring in $2.2 billion. The state allows that money to be used for a convention center, and also for a multipurpose arena or a venue that includes a livestock facility.

What Its Like On Amtrak Cascades And How To Spend 24-Ish Hours In Vancouver The Seattle Times
What It’s Like On Amtrak Cascades — And How To Spend 24-Ish Hours In Vancouver – The Seattle Times https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/what-its-like-on-amtrak-cascades-and-how-to-spend-24-ish-hours-in-vancouver-the-seattle-times/ ABOARD THE AMTRAK CASCADES TRAIN — A bald eagle coasted alongside the speeding train — Amtrak No. 516 en route from Seattle to Vancouver, B.C., on a recent Friday morning — the bird’s wings spread wide as it rode the wind. The eagle occasionally dipped low, as if to catch a glimpse inside the cars; those on the other side of the windows responded with enthusiasm, hands digging into pockets for iPhones, shoulders jostling for position to snap photos.  Beyond the fleeting glimpses of that majestic bird, the scene was remarkable. Those aboard the Amtrak that morning were treated to the type of Northwest sunrise that makes you feel like you’re living inside a painting: A combination of morning fog and wildfire smoke from the North Cascades gave the light a pinkish hue. Puget Sound was almost wholly still at low tide, a crystalline surface reflecting the mountains above.  Passenger trains have been chugging along the waters off Washington state and British Columbia since early in the 20th century, but Amtrak paused the Cascades route from Seattle to Vancouver at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. On Sept. 26, service finally resumed, with one train running daily between the Pacific Northwest cities. Here’s what the ride was like. On the train  Maybe the recently resumed service or the serenity of the scene influenced the mood of the train’s passengers. Even as the line for bistro-brewed coffee stretched through the cafe car, people waited patiently and chattered happily with their neighbors. Perhaps it was the novelty of a trip that almost everybody aboard was making for the first time in several years. Mua Cama had been waiting less patiently than many. She lives in Vancouver, while her sister and her family live in Seattle. Typically, the international border between them is merely a nuisance; during the pandemic, it was a firmer barrier. And although the border itself reopened (with restrictions) last August, it was the train starting back up that finally nudged Cama to head south and see her family.  “My sister was the one who was tracking when it was going to start running again,” Cama said. “‘Oh, you can get on the train again in September!’ ‘OK, I’m buying a ticket immediately.’ It was so nice to see them again.” A little farther back sat Chris Steer, who was filling out his Seattle Times crossword between pauses to gaze out the window. Originally from Wimbledon, in South London, Steer has lived in Seattle for nearly 40 years and estimates he’s traveled this route “dozens and dozens” of times.  While Cama was heading back home after visiting family, Steer was headed the other way: to Whistler to see his daughter and granddaughter. He was slightly less sanguine about the Amtrak experience — while the train from Portland to Seattle takes about as long as it does to drive, Canadian rail restrictions means a two-and-a-half-hour drive becomes a four-plus-hour train ride from Seattle to British Columbia — he was nevertheless happy to be back aboard.  “It’s not really very quick or efficient, but it’s pleasant,” Steer said, chuckling lightly. “I actually took the bus when the train wasn’t running, and it turned out to be quicker. But anyway, it’s pleasant: just reading the news and relaxing.”  That was the general vibe onboard: Passengers were excited to arrive, certainly, but on this trip, the journey itself was as much of an adventure as what awaited at Pacific Central Station in Vancouver.  In Vancouver The restaurant and social scene in Vancouver feels blessedly untouched by the events of the past few years. For those who were regular visitors before the pandemic, there’s a sense of happy déjà vu, a time capsule where so much of what made this place special beforehand still exists.  Our first stop was a late lunch at Marutama Ramen, after braving the line out front that moved swiftly. Marutama originated in Tokyo, and though it has since branched out around Asia and Australia, Vancouver is the only place it’s available in the Western Hemisphere. The creamy chicken broth — order the spicy version — is worth the trip in and of itself. If we’d turned back south immediately, with flushed faces and full bellies, it’d still have been a Friday well spent.  Fortuitously, for our purposes, if perhaps less convenient in general, Amtrak service has resumed on a more limited basis: just one trip from Seattle each morning and back from Vancouver in the evening. Booking a return package for the following day allows for a full 28 hours or so for exploring, more than enough time to hit many highlights while not feeling rushed. Biking the seawall around Stanley Park is so commonplace on Vancouver tourism checklists that it felt trite to include; the experience was so exhilarating on such a beautiful fall afternoon that it’d have been a disservice not to recommend it. The leaves changing color on the mountains above North Vancouver, the ebb and flow of waves crashing onshore beneath the Lions Gate Bridge, the smiling faces on what seemed like each and every passerby — all of it was wonderful. There are bike shops that offer rentals dotted around the entryway to the park. Choose one near the English Bay Beach side, and you can follow your ride with a happy hour drink or two at The Three Brits Public House, a cozy (as the name suggests) English-style pub with tall windows that overlook English Bay. Those come in handy particularly around the sunset.  Although you’ll have to wait until the spring for it to start back up, the Richmond Night Market is worth putting a pin in for first-time visitors and B.C. veterans alike. The market runs on Friday through Monday nights from late April until mid-October; we caught the last weekend session of the year, and the entrance line stretched all the way around the perimeter of the event itself.  The wait was more than worth it: To a visitor from a small town in the States, the scene was something like a county fair, only with a mind-boggling number of food options from around the world. The whole thing was sensory overload: the smells of grilling meat and octopus, snippets of conversation in many different languages, neon lights and multicolored flags hung on every available surface. Highlights included Taiwanese fried chicken tenders, garlic pork belly, lamb as well as steak skewers, plus an egg wrap filled with Spam and cheese. Day 2 unfolded groggily at first, a consequence of a lingering food coma. A Belgian waffle topped with a heap of sliced fruit plus a well-made latte at Nero provided a helpful jolt.  The rest of the morning was spent at Granville Island, easily accessible by the water taxi stations that dot the waterfront. Because you’re on vacation, feel free to sample the sake flight at Artisan SakeMaker or a cocktail at The Liberty Distillery — or both; the train home doesn’t leave until the early evening. That timetable is ideally for wandering: on the island or back downtown, in luxury storefronts or souvenir shops. If you decide to stick around on Granville Island, Tony’s Fish & Oyster Cafe is a tasty, greasy way to soak up those boozy samplers. For a later lunch or early dinner on the way back through to Pacific Central, The Flying Pig in either Yaletown or Olympic Village has an inventive rotating menu that rarely disappoints. Be sure to arrive at the station with plenty of time to spare: The customs check is again on this side of the border, and they shut down early if everybody is processed and the stragglers don’t arrive at least 15 minutes prior to departure.  If you’re lucky, the sunset on the way home will be just as spectacular as the sunrise on the way up. Kick back and enjoy the scenery streaming past, mulling over new memories spent in a one-of-a-kind city a mere train ride away. It’s like you never left. Asos Troubles Deepen As Lenders Fashion Balance Sheet Talks – Sky News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/asos-troubles-deepen-as-lenders-fashion-balance-sheet-talks-sky-news/ Asos, the online fashion retailer, is facing deepening troubles after its biggest lenders hired advisers in a move that could pave the way for a formal financial restructuring. Sky News has learnt that the London-listed company, which is due to report its full-year results to the City on Wednesday, recently approached the banks behind its £350m revolving credit facility to seek an amendment to its borrowing agreements. City sources said this weekend that lenders including Barclays, HSBC and Lloyds Banking Group were lining up AlixPartners and law firm Clifford Chance to advise them on the unfolding situation. Asos and its banking syndicate are said to be in advanced talks to agree on the amendment. However, at least one major trade credit insurer which provides cover to Asos’s suppliers in the event of its failure to pay them is said to have decided to reduce its support. That move may force Asos to pay for products up-front, tightening the squeeze on the company’s cashflow. One insider said the discussion about a covenant amendment could be followed by an independent business review (IBR) to provide a more comprehensive assessment of Asos’s financial prospects. A broader restructuring of the company’s balance sheet has not been ruled out, although it is not currently on the board’s or lenders’ immediate agenda. The banks’ move to recruit specialist financial advice follows a torrid period in which Asos has lost almost 80% of its value in just 12 months. Asos’s £350m bank facility matures in July 2024, and a person close to the company said on Saturday that the lenders’ decision was “standard”. Its request for a covenant amendment was designed to ensure “optimal financial flexibility” at a time of economic turmoil, the person added. Inflationary pressures and the fading of investors’ assumptions that soaring demand during the COVID pandemic would be sustainable have coalesced into a string of profit warnings. Last month, it said profits for the year ending August 31 would be “around the bottom end” of a previously indicated £20m-£60m range. The intensifying gloom around the UK economy is beginning to have a profound impact on consumer-facing businesses as the threat of soaring mortgage costs, energy prices and other inflationary pressures hurt sectors such as retail and hospitality. Next week, Asos’s new chief executive, José Antonio Ramos Calamonte, is expected to set out details of his plan to improve the company’s performance alongside its results. His appointment, which was announced in June, came as part of a broader boardroom overhaul which saw Ian Dyson step down after a brief stint as chairman and Jorgen Lindemann named as his successor. The new CEO was previously Asos’s chief commercial officer. Asos saw its valuation surge to make it one of the London stock market’s most prized fashion retailers. During the pandemic, it took advantage of its buoyant performance to acquire the TopShop brand from the remnants of Sir Philip Green’s bankrupt high street retailer, Arcadia Group. It also raised close to £250m from a share sale to enable it to take advantage of opportunities arising from the dislocation caused by COVID-19. Asos declined to comment on its lenders’ move to hire financial advisers, but said in relation to the withdrawal of trade credit insurance: “This happened towards the end of August and there has been no adverse impact on trading relationships with our suppliers.

Below, these truths will be highlighted and examined along with the research to support or oppose these myths. It is important to note that when we talk about weight loss, it’s really a highly individualized process. No two people lose weight in the same way.  A lot of weight loss can be trying to find what works for you and your lifestyle. For example, intermittent fasting can be a great way to lose weight for some, or it can lead to binging and overeating at other meals for others.  There are so many things that can impact the way an individual loses weight, and that is a conversation for another time. Below, see the small truths, and the science, behind these 18 common weight loss myths.  Myth 1: Skip Meals to Lose Weight Logically, this myth sounds like it makes sense: eat less, lose weight. Research shows that skipping breakfast or dinner can lead to eating less during the day. However, that may not be true for most people. After a fast, some people may compensate by eating more later in the day and end up not losing weight.  Myth 2: All Calories Are Created Equal This is false. Some calories are better than others. This can depend mainly on the nutrient density of the calories and foods you eat, as some foods are more nutrient-dense than others. Meaning that for the same amount of calories, some foods contain more vitamins, minerals, and fiber than others. For example, 100 calories of potato chips and 100 calories of broccoli nutritionally are vastly different. The varying compositions of different foods leads to the foods being metabolized in your body in different ways as well.  Myth 3: You Have to Starve Yourself to Lose Weight If a health professional tells you that you need to starve yourself to lose weight, then run away fast. Rapid weight loss by very restricted dieting can wreak havoc on your metabolism, not to mention your body and organs. After times of significant calorie restriction, your metabolism slows down drastically, and weight regain is inevitable. There are better, healthier ways to lose weight. Studies found that beverages like ginger lemon tea and green tea drinks can boost metabolism, promote fullness, and decrease appetite. Try this ginger lemon tea in the morning. Get the recipe. Myth 4: Eating at Night Makes you Gain Weight This is false, but there may be some truth to it. It has more to do with what we eat at night and how much than the mere fact of eating at night. Most people tend to grab a bowl full of ice cream and not a bowl full of carrots for a nighttime snack. So, eating that bowl of ice cream every night might lead to weight gain. It is not the night eating, but what you eat and how much that are the main factors.  Myth 5: Skipping Breakfast Helps you Lose Weight Regarding breakfast, in particular, the research actually states the contrary. Many studies have demonstrated a relationship between breakfast eaters and lower BMI. Like the first myth, the idea is that skipping breakfast will lead you to eat fewer calories throughout the day, over time leading to weight loss. Again, for some people, skipping meals leads them to make up for the calories in later meals throughout the day, which defeats the purpose.  Myth 6: Cut Out Fat Cutting out fat will not help you lose weight, perhaps unless you are using it as a way to lower calorie intake. Fat has more calories per gram (meaning it is more calorie-dense) compared to carbohydrates and protein, which each has about 4 calories per gram. Fat has 9 calories. So, lowering your fat intake can be an excellent way to cut some calories throughout your day, which may result in weight loss over time. Myth 7: Cut Out Carbs This is one of my favorite ones to debunk. No, you do not need to cut out carbs to lose weight. People tend to think of “fun” carbs when thinking of carbs, like pasta, bread, and sweets. And yes, lowering your intake of these foods can lead to some weight loss because they can be high in calories, and we tend to overeat these foods. But there are a lot of other nutrient-dense foods that are high sources of carbs. Fruits, veggies, and nuts are nutrient-dense, critical, and loaded with carbs. Studies show that participants lost weight by consuming several different diets, including low-carb or low-fat, as long as they decreased their calories.  Myth 8: Cut Out Gluten Gluten can be a perfectly healthy part of any diet for most people. Like the answer above, people associate gluten with carb and calorie-heavy foods like pasta and bread. Cutting back on those foods can be an excellent way to cut calories and lose weight, but it is likely not from decreasing your gluten intake that you would lose weight. In fact, the research on gluten-free diets has shown no relationship with weight loss. People who follow a gluten-free diet are also more likely to have nutrient deficiencies like iron and calcium due to the lack of whole grains in their diet.  Myth 9: Diet Soda Helps You Lose Weight This question is the source of a lot of research today. This one, again, logically makes sense. Switching to a diet soda from a regular soda can decrease the calories you consume in a day. However, the research tells another story. In this review (a paper that analyzes a bunch of studies all at once), swapping out regular soda for diet soda had no impact on a person’s weight. In fact, some studies showed diet soda intake was associated with weight gain! And this could be for several reasons that deserve its own article to explain. The bottom line is, switching to diet soda is likely not a good strategy for weight loss. And, unfortunately, even though it is boring, water will always be your best option.  Myth 10: Juice Cleanses Work Many try juice cleanses believing it will eliminate the “toxins” that build up in your body. Actually, you have organs, your liver and kidneys, which do a pretty good job of that! There is also little to no research on juice cleanses, and the research out there does not favor juice cleanses. They can lead to macronutrient deficiencies (your body not getting the carbs, fat, and protein it needs), and malnutrition. There are other, healthier ways to lose weight than starving your body of the nutrients it needs! Myth 11: Fast Intermittently to Lose Weight This is a great example of something that may work for some people but not others. In studies, as long as participants maintained a lower-calorie diet or slight calorie restriction, they lost weight. However, there is a lot of individual variation, meaning a large range of weight changes. Most of these studies have relatively few people and are not over a long period, meaning we need to take these results with a grain of salt. So, intermittent fasting can be something you try and see if it works for you and your lifestyle.  Myth 12: The Keto Diet is the Solution Fat can have some incredible benefits and is essential to the health of our brains and other organs. However, eating the amount of fat needed for ketosis can negatively impact your health. In addition, to achieve ketosis, you need to lower your carb intake to under 50 grams a day. To put it into perspective, that is one small muffin (about 60 grams) of carbs daily! While weight loss results have been promising in the short term, an overly restrictive diet like this is hard to maintain over a long time. Myth 13: ‘Hack’ Your Body to Lose Weight This is the idea that you can “defeat” biology. While the science of “hacking” your biology is a little shaky, the proposed solutions boil down to general recommendations for healthy living. This includes eating a balanced diet, getting plenty of exercise, and getting adequate sleep. All of these are great recommendations for weight reduction and a healthy lifestyle. In addition, there is a lack of research on this topic so I would interpret everything on this topic with a grain of salt. Myth 14: You Must Go On a Diet This word is often misused. It really just refers to the way you eat. So yes, you have to eat a certain way to lose weight, but this does not have to be keto, intermittent fasting, or a juice cleanse. You can just try to eat a little healthier and add some fruits, veggies, and lean proteins, all in the right amounts for your body. If you want to call that a diet, then go for it! Research shows protein can boost metabolism by 80 to 100 calories per day, reduce cravings by 60 percent, and help you eat up to 441 fewer calories per day. One study suggests your metabolic rate temporarily increases more after eating protein-rich foods, such as salmon, compared with fat and carbohydrates. For a flavorful weekday dinner, try this Mediterranean Salmon Provencal. Get the recipe. Myth 15: ‘Cheat’ Days Help The idea of “cheat days” is still an area for further research, but it stands that cheat meals can make your diet a more sustainable one. An excellent way to think about it is by following the 80/20 rule for daily or weekly meals. Focus on making 80 percent of what you eat healthful and nutrient-dense, while 20 percent can be your more calorie-dense treats. Make sure during that 20 percent you are still trying to eat portions that are right for your body, but go easy on yourself if you eat a little more. Some people can experience episodes of binging during cheat meals, so it is important to maintain a mindful approach to your cheat meals.  Myth 16: Cut Out Booze to Lose Weight Alcohol could lead to gaining weight in a couple different ways, which typically apply to heavier drinkers. Alcohol itself contains calories. In addition to the sugar usually associated with our favorite drinks, having several drinks in one night could add hundreds of calories to your daily...

What Channel Is Alabama Vs. Tennessee On Today? The third-ranked, undefeated Crimson Tide will travel to Neyland Stadium to take on sixth-ranked, also unbeaten Tennessee. It is the first time since 2016, when No. 9 Tennessee lost 49-10 to top-ranked Alabama, that the rivals have met as top-10 teams. It’s also the first time since the 1989 season — 33 years ago — that these teams meet as undefeated opponents. A Tennessee victory on Saturday would be the first since 2006, and the Volunteers’ first over Alabama since Nick Saban arrived in 2007. It would also represent their first 6-0 start since 1998, a season in which they won the inaugural BCS championship. Expect Neyland Stadium to be raucous when Saban and Co. come to town. MORE: Watch Alabama vs. Tennessee A&M live with fuboTV (free trial) This meeting also pits together a fascinating quarterback battle — potentially. Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker is a Heisman Trophy candidate at this point in the season, completing 70 percent of his passes for 1,432 yards and 10 touchdowns, adding another 231 rushing yards and three more scores. He could potentially be in a high-powered quarterback duel with Alabama’s Bryce Young, the defending Heisman winner. However, his status for the game is still questionable after suffering an AC sprain to his throwing shoulder in a Week 5 victory over Arkansas. If he can’t go, Jalen Milroe will get his second start of the season. New Metaverse Video Game Hometopia Aims To Become “Roblox For Adults” – Crypto News Flash https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/new-metaverse-video-game-hometopia-aims-to-become-roblox-for-adults-crypto-news-flash/ New York, NY, October 2022 – Everyrealm, the metaverse technology company backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Coinbase, and the Weeknd, is joining forces with a video game called Hometopia to launch the world’s first mainstream metaverse game for home design, building, and renovating virtual real estate.  Hometopia is a free-to-play video game that allows players to build their ideal homes and communities alongside friends. Unlike traditional video games, Hometopia players are given true ownership of everything they build and acquire.  “Hometopia will capture those looking for a more realistic home design and world creation game as they age out of the homebuilding games they loved as a kid. Hometopia stands to become this generation’s The Sims, one of the best-selling PC games of all time, which sold more than 11 million copies generating more than $5 billion in revenue,” says Alex Ahlund, founder and developer of Hometopia. Hometopia’s game mechanics resemble some of the most popular home design games in Roblox, such as Bloxburg and Brookhaven. Bloxburg, which was released in 2015, has amassed over five billion visits and been favorited more than 11 million times. Brookhaven, another Roblox-based home building simulation game, routinely has over 450,000+ concurrent users.  Janine Yorio, CEO of Everyrealm, said, “As a gamified combination of Pinterest, Houzz and Wayfair, Hometopia is poised to capture those looking for more adult-versions of Roblox interior design games they grew to love as children, and will particularly appeal to a female demographic that has been overlooked by most metaverse gaming projects but which represents a disproportionate amount of spending power.”  Everyrealm is best known for its vast and diverse metaverse real estate holdings and successful metaverse projects including Fantasy Islands and The Row. Backed by Polygon, Forte, and Overwolf, Hometopia is a project led by Alex Ahlund, a 20+ year veteran of the video gaming industry, best known for top-grossing mobile games including Design This Home and Design This Castle, which each had more than 25 million players. Googles Next-Gen Video Chat Tech Is Ready For The Real World WIRED
Google’s Next-Gen Video Chat Tech Is Ready For The Real World – WIRED https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/googles-next-gen-video-chat-tech-is-ready-for-the-real-world-wired/ Good news for anyone who’s sick of Zoom calls but also hates talking to people in real life: Google’s Project Starline is becoming more widely available. Google introduced Starline in 2021 with the goal of making video calls less weird and awkward. It’s essentially a very complicated video conferencing booth that uses cameras, depth sensors, and three-dimensional imagery to approximate face-to-face conversations between two remote participants. A suite of cameras even track both participants’ eye movements and adjust the view on the other side to enable the two people to make eye contact. Our reporter tried it and found that it does a good job creating the sense that the other person is sitting across from you, making the resulting interactions feel very realistic. Others who have tried it say the same. Video: Google Google has been testing the setup internally and is now preparing to set up Starline booths in offices outside the company. Chances are you won’t be able to use Starline quite yet, unless you happen to work with one of the companies Google is partnering with in the US. (Salesforce, T-Mobile, and WeWork, to name a few.) It’s also not clear what Google plans to do with the tech. The company has positioned it as a way for long-distance relatives or coworkers to connect. Having a more lifelike interaction could help remote workers have less stilted conversations. Yes, you’re stuck in that Starline booth, but at least you don’t have to jump around with a headset on. Here’s some more of this week’s news from the Gear desk. iPhone Coasters At its iPhone announcement event in September, Apple took several opportunities to scare the living daylights out of anyone who dares venture outside their home. Apple’s true goal was to highlight the emergency response features in its new iPhones and Apple Watches. One of those was crash detection, which can automatically call emergency services when the phone senses you’ve been in an auto collision. Apple says its hardware can detect the kinds of sudden stops and inversions that might occur in a wreck. Oh, but you know where else those movements might happen? On a roller coaster. At theme parks around the US, iPhone users have reported going on twisty-turny roller coasters then discovering later that their phone has called the cops. In some cases, emergency responders have shown up on the scene for these false alarms. Critics have expressed concern that this could potentially tie up emergency phone lines and personnel. Apple has said the issue is not widespread and that the tech will improve over time. Wish Upon a Polestar The Swedish car company Polestar has announced a new electric vehicle. The Polestar 3 is an all-wheel drive SUV. The company says the 400-V battery gets up to 300 miles on a charge. Inside is a dashboard powered by an Nvidia computer that projects driving information onto the windshield like a head-up display. It starts at $83,900, which is nearly twice as much as the debut price of the previous model, the Polestar 2. There isn’t an official release date for the Polestar 3, but the company says it plans to start selling the vehicles toward the end of 2023. The Zuck Zone Mark Zuckerberg has bet big on the metaverse. His company, Meta, has already pumped billions of dollars into the virtual realm, convinced that one day it will inevitably become mainstream. Thing is, that bet will take a long time to pay off. Meanwhile, Meta just announced a new $1,500 VR headset. The tech is cool, but there’s still no sign whatsoever that society at large is eager to strap on a face computer and hop into the virtual realm. (Never mind that the headset also uses inward-facing cameras to track the wearer’s eye movements and facial expressions, which raised privacy concerns—especially because it’s Meta on the other end.) This week on our Gadget Lab podcast, WIRED editor-at-large Steven Levy, author of the book Facebook: The Inside Story, joins the show to discuss Meta’s VR ambitions and when—if ever—VR might finally take off.

Cardano Price Forecast Can ADA Make A New All-Time High This Year? Cryptonews
Cardano Price Forecast Can ADA Make A New All-Time High This Year? Cryptonews
Cardano Price Forecast – Can ADA Make A New All-Time High This Year? – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/cardano-price-forecast-can-ada-make-a-new-all-time-high-this-year-cryptonews/ Cardano price continues to wallow in the murky waters of the crypto winter about a year after posting an impressive show to its all-time of $3.09. If the current retracement at $0.36 carries on, ADA could broadcast a 90% correction from its historical high. However, robust support between $0.30 and $0.35 will likely come in handy and avert a potential seller-only field day. While such a move would be a major setback, it is doubtful that it will happen, especially with ADA having grown to a noticeable cryptocurrency ecosystem compared to August last year when it tagged $3.09. On the bright side, Cardano is closer to its floor price now than ever since the rains started beating the crypto market in November 2021. Furthermore, the extremely oversold conditions the smart contracts token deals with negates the idea of a continued retracement. That said, Cardano price prediction might not be as outlandish as everyone would hope, yet it could certainly make a new all-time high this year. Cardano Price Prediction – All Eyes Set on A New Record High The IOHK (Input Output Hongkong), the organization that is tasked with building and maintaining the Cardano blockchain, has been busy working on what could be termed revolutionary DeFi (decentralized finance) tech solutions. Cardano recently achieved another milestone with the release of the Vasil upgrade. According to Charles Hoskinson, founder of the network, this software upgrade focuses on scaling the blockchain. The Vasil Upgrade saw the Cardano protocol reach a larger network capacity – supported by lower transaction fees and higher throughput. Furthermore, Cardano is grinding toward another upgrade dubbed Voltaire – which will introduce governance standards. Cardano’s focus on decentralization sets it up for the front-row role in blockchain security and scalability. Over the last year, Cardano technically rebranded from a sleeping to a tech star. In addition to bringing staking to Cardano in the third quarter of 2021, the protocol’s adoption has been aggressively expanding globally among governments and organizations. Cardano price prediction to a new all-time could be rather reserved, considering it rallied 2,300% from $0.12 in July 2020 to $3.09 in August 2021. Such a run-up from the current price will place ADA price slightly above $8.00. It is worth mentioning that in the short term, Cardano price could face restricted movement owing to the current bear market conditions. However, in the next bull run, ADA may have the potential to climb to $15.00. According to Dan Gambardella, an analyst and a Cardano bull, the worst of the bear market is nearly gone, and the only way will soon be to the upside. Nevertheless, Gambardello admits that investors are scared – and are abandoning projects, especially Cardano, oblivious of how close the finish line is. (1) Dan Gambardello on Twitter: “$ADA holders, I think the last year leading to this current moment was the toughest part. Now we prepare for the last leg of the bear market. It will be volatile & crazy, but the clouds will eventually clear and #Cardano will thrive in the next bull cycle. Stay strong & plan.” / Twitter The TD Sequential indicator buy signal on the 3-day chart reveals through a red nine candle that Cardano price could be at the tail end of this downtrend. In other words, there is a tendency for selling pressure to ease, allowing buyers to push the price higher. Traders must, however, ensure the low of the sixth and the seventh candles closed beneath the eighth and ninth bars in the count. Moreover, one bullish candle on the four-hour or daily chart should close before making good on the long positions.   ADA/USD 3-day chart Cardano price is treading in oversold conditions based on the position of the Stochastic oscillator. The OBV (On Balance Volume) will start climbing as the oscillator lifts above 20.00. A bullish divergence from the Stochastic will be necessary to ascertain the validity of the uptrend. ADA has the potential to rally – so is IMPT While Cardano is a must-have on any crypto portfolio, creating room for green crypto like IMPT sets it from the rest. IMPT is the new kid on the block for building an ESG crypto portfolio. The platform, currently in its presale stage, aims at introducing carbon offsetting to the blockchain. Visit IMPT To Learn More

Pakistan Summons U.S. Ambassador Over Biden’s Nuclear Remarks – Reuters https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/pakistan-summons-u-s-ambassador-over-bidens-nuclear-remarks-reuters/ KARACHI, Pakistan Oct 15 (Reuters) – Pakistan’s foreign minister said on Saturday he had summoned the U.S. ambassador after President Joe Biden questioned the safety of Pakistan’s nuclear programme. In a speech on Thursday, Biden said Pakistan is “maybe one of the most dangerous nations in the world” as it has “nuclear weapons without any cohesion”. Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said he was surprised by the comments. “As far as the question of the safety and security of Pakistan’s nuclear assets are concerned, we meet all – each and every – international standard in accordance with the IAEA,” he said at a press conference on Saturday. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com A transcript of Biden’s speech was published by the White House on its website. Bhutto-Zardari said he didn’t think the decision to summon the U.S. ambassador would negatively affect relations with the United States, and said officials could address any specific concerns Washington had on the nuclear programme. Ties between Islamabad and Washington, once close allies, have just started to warm after some years of frosty relations, mostly due to concerns about Pakistan’s alleged support of the Taliban in Afghanistan. Pakistan denies this support. The foreign minister said worries about Pakistan’s nuclear programme were not raised on his recent trip to Washington, where he held extensive meetings, including at the State Department. Gov. DeSantis Vents Anew Over Parkland Shooter Life Imprisonment Verdict Florida Politics
Gov. DeSantis Vents Anew Over Parkland Shooter Life Imprisonment Verdict Florida Politics
Gov. DeSantis Vents Anew Over Parkland Shooter Life Imprisonment Verdict – Florida Politics https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/gov-desantis-vents-anew-over-parkland-shooter-life-imprisonment-verdict-florida-politics/ Reports that prosecutors were ‘pursuing some things’ regarding the jury gave the Governor some hope, he said. A juror complaint in the aftermath of the Parkland shooter’s trial is sparking calls for an investigation and, apparently, Gov. Ron DeSantis’ hope that the school shooter won’t live out the rest of his natural days in prison. But despite the complaint, it seems the life sentence is likely to stick. The trial ended with a jury verdict that the shooter will not be executed for killing 17 people, as he confessed to doing in the halls of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Valentine’s Day 2018. Florida law requires jurors to unanimously agree to approve the death penalty. And there were three holdouts, according to what the jury foreman told CBS Miami. The specter that Cruz could live to old age produced near-unanimous shock and anger. And, at Friday’s news conference, the Governor was among them. “The state of Florida has executed people in our history who’ve committed really dastardly crimes, but crimes that didn’t reach this level of carnage, and yet somehow he’s going to be living off taxpayer expense for what, 50 years, 60 years,” DeSantis said at a news conference in Cape Coral. “His victims didn’t get that luxury to be able to live out those decades.” “And, if you have something like capital punishment available in a case like that has got to be administered,” DeSantis said. The Sun-Sentinel reported Friday morning that a juror reported a threat during deliberations. And an afternoon hearing into whether police can interview that juror has been scheduled. Apparently, the Governor has questions. “I know that the prosecutors are pursuing some things with the jury and I think that they should do that,” DeSantis said. “Did you have jurors that were just never going to do this (approve of the death penalty) no matter what? That’s not the way this system is supposed to work. What was going on? There may have been something that went on. So I think whatever legal process they have and legal tools they have available, I think they should use it because I do think it was a miscarriage of justice.” The state’s motion seems to indicate a crime against an individual juror, however. “Juror X spoke to a support staff member (at the State Attorney’s Office) and informed the support staff member during deliberations she received what she perceived to be a threat from a fellow juror while in the jury room,” the state’s motion reads. That report comes in addition to another note written to Circuit Court Judge Elizabeth Scherer, who presided over the shooter’s trial. A juror wrote to her about the atmosphere during deliberations. Juror Denise Cunha told the judge that other jurors became angry when she made it clear she would not vote for Cruz to get the death penalty, the Sun-Sentinel reported. The Sun Sentinel is reporting that Cunha is not the same person who called the State Attorney’s Office with reports of a threat from a fellow juror.  Still, DeSantis said he was “thankful that it looks like the prosecutors may be pursuing.” But then the Yale Law School graduate added, “Look, I don’t know how those avenues are worked out.” And it’s unlikely to change the outcome. As the Sun-Sentinel explained, “allegations of juror misconduct raised after trial cannot change the outcome when it’s in the defendant’s favor.” The Governor’s real beef might be the way a 2016 U.S. Supreme Court struck down Florida’s death penalty law. At that time, Florida was one of three states that allowed a simple majority of jurors to recommend the death penalty, according to the New York Times. The overall situation has DeSantis calling for a reevaluation anyway. “We need to do some reforms to be better serving victims of crimes and the families of crime victims and not always bend over backwards to try to do everything we need to do for the perpetrators of crimes,” he said. Julian Parker/UK Press/Getty Images Historically, the royal family has been formal with children in public, avoiding public displays of affection. Queen Elizabeth, in particular, was physically distant from her children, shaking King Charles’ hand when she returned from a royal tour when he was a young child, according to Romper. But Diana was clearly a different kind of parent from the moment she became a mother. Although she had many formal royal responsibilities as the Princess of Wales, Diana made clear during her life that her children were her focus. Prince William is also a hands-on parent, though he’s slightly more formal than his mother. Prince George and his father, Prince William, in May 2015. AP/Kirsty Wigglesworth Prince William has been transparent that his mother’s legacy has helped to shape the person he is. But he is also the heir to the British throne, meaning even his moments as a parent are closely monitored by the press. William seems to have struck a balance between his mother’s and the monarchy’s historical approach to parenting, based on photos of him with his children. In 1993, she took them to Thorpe Park and went on a log flume with them, all three grinning as they reached the bottom. Although he is more reserved with his children in public, private photos released by the royal family show William having fun with his kids just like his mother. Konami Launches Metaverse Push With Web3 Focused Hiring Spree – Blockchain Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/konami-launches-metaverse-push-with-web3-focused-hiring-spree-blockchain-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ Konami, one of the most influential Japanese game development and publishing companies, has announced it will be introducing Web3 and metaverse technologies into its games. The company opened 13 different job openings for three departments that will be responsible for developing the new projects to spearhead Konami’s latest business strategy. Konami to Enter Metaverse and Web3 Arena Konami, one of the biggest AAA game developers and publishers in Japan, is showing interest in jumping on the metaverse and Web3 entertainment bandwagon. The company recently published a series of job openings for the production of experiences that include this type of technology in its next games. The company is recruiting via 13 different job openings in the areas of infrastructure development, production and operations, and support. These new openings will help to “provide new experiences such as Web3 and Metaverse,” according to Konami’s news release. While there have been no statements about the IPs (intellectual properties) that will be using these new technologies, the company did explain its general plans for the future, which also include non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Konami stated: We have been conducting research and development to incorporate the latest technology into games and contents, and plan to launch a service where players can trade their in-game NFTs (digital items) through a unique distribution platform using blockchain. Konami’s Background This isn’t the first time around for Konami using blockchain-based elements as part of its operations. In fact, the company has already released an NFT collection to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of Castlevania, one of its most beloved franchises. The NFT collection, which features videos and images of some of the first games of the franchise, was successful and managed to raise over $160K in January. As a result, the company signaled in favor of further adopting this technology, noting it would be using the same for “content preservation” purposes. Other Japanese players have the edge when it comes to the metaverse and Web3 developments. Bandai Namco is already working on establishing its own multi-IP metaverse, and in February stated it would be investing $130 million toward this goal. Square Enix has also included blockchain and play-to-earn as part of its business strategy, even announcing the launch of a Final Fantasy-themed NFT collection for next year. Sega also recently announced it will produce its own blockchain-based, IP-licensed game, using Japanese blockchain provider Oasys to support its decentralized components. Anthony Hopkins NFT Sells-Out In 7 Minutes – Here’s Everything You Need To Know – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/anthony-hopkins-nft-sells-out-in-7-minutes-heres-everything-you-need-to-know-cryptonews/ Source: OpenSea Anthony Hopkins, a Welsh actor, director, and producer, has seen his first NFT collection sold out in less than 10 minutes despite the overall soar market conditions and dwindling user interest in digital collectibles.  Called “The Eternal Collection,” the project was launched in collaboration with NFT design agency Orange Comet, and featured 1000 original cinematic art pieces inspired by different performances of the actor over his film acreer.  The body of work “conceptualizes an interpretation of the vast character archetypes Sir Anthony Hopkins has portrayed over his illustrious film career, drawing its potent energy from his stimulating body of art,” according to the collection’s description on OpenSea. The archetypes names include “The Jester”, “The Lover”, “The Ruler”, “The Rebel”, “The Giver”, and “The Eternal,” each of which represents the various archetypal characters the actor has played throughout his prosperous career.  The mint price for each NFT was 0.25 ETH (around $325), though the floor price of the collection currently stands at 0.69 ETH ($885). Notably, NFT holders have a chance to win personalized NFTs from Hopkins, an autographed art book, and a Zoom call with him.  “Thanks to everyone for helping make this a huge success! Oscar Winner Anthony Hopkins’ First NFT Collection Sold Out in Minutes on OpenSea,” said Dave Broome, CEO of Orange Comet. Hopkins has showed interest in Web3 and NFTs for some time now, most recently adding an ENS domain to his Twitter profile. He also starred in the sci-fi film Zero Contact, which was released via the NFT platform Vuele. NFT Market Down by Every Metric What makes the success of “The Eternal Collection” even more impressive is that the project had a splashy debut despite the overall bad market conditions, especially for NFTs. As reported, NFT trading volume has taken a major dive, plunging by nearly 100% from its all-time high in January this year. The trading volume for NFTs stood at $17 billion at begining of the year. However, that figure plunged to just $466 million in September, representing a drop of 97%. The drop is in line with the broader market downturn and the global market rout, caused by the war in Europe, rising inflation, and poor central bank policies.  “The fading NFT mania is part of a wider, $2 trillion wipeout in the crypto sector as rapidly tightening monetary policy starves speculative assets of investment flows,” Bloomberg reported in late September.

Without A Nasal Vaccine The U.S. Edge In Fighting Covid Is On The Line POLITICO
Without A Nasal Vaccine The U.S. Edge In Fighting Covid Is On The Line POLITICO
Without A Nasal Vaccine, The U.S. Edge In Fighting Covid Is On The Line – POLITICO https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/without-a-nasal-vaccine-the-u-s-edge-in-fighting-covid-is-on-the-line-politico/ India, Russia and Iran have authorized nasal vaccines. And while none of those have yet been proven to stop Covid transmission, officials say the U.S. could find itself at a global disadvantage, particularly if a deadlier variant emerges. “Intranasal vaccines — vaccines that are variant-resistant — those are critical tools to have in the toolbox for protecting Americans, not just for Covid but also for future pandemics and also for future biosecurity threats,” Ashish Jha, the administration’s Covid-19 response coordinator, told POLITICO. Researchers working on nasal vaccines are hopeful that they could stop virus transmission by generating immunity against it in the nose and other parts of the upper respiratory system where the coronavirus enters the body. If that bears out in clinical trials, nasal vaccines would be superior to existing mRNA vaccines, which prevent severe disease but don’t stop transmission. Officials at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases are attuned to the danger of failing to develop such a nasal vaccine since it would protect people in case of a more contagious and deadlier coronavirus variant, said Karin Bok, the acting deputy director for pandemic preparedness and emergency response at the agency’s Vaccine Research Center. The center has mapped the nasal and oral Covid vaccines in development in the U.S. and abroad. It is also testing nasal versions of the Moderna vaccine and two other types of injectable Covid-19 vaccines in monkeys, Bok said. But that probably won’t lead to a nasal Covid vaccine being approved in the U.S. anytime soon because funding for clinical trials and production is lacking. Bok and Jha say the cost is high. If China were to develop a nasal vaccine capable of stopping Covid transmission, that could turn the tables on the current pandemic trajectory, which has the U.S. emerging and much of China stuck in lockdown. Even though India, Iran, China and Russia haven’t proved their non-injectable vaccines stop transmission, the potential is there, experts said. “Countries where transmission is reduced are going to be healthier, are going to have stronger economies. And the U.S. needs to catch up,” said Marty Moore, the founder and chief scientific officer of Meissa Vaccines, a small biotech company that’s trying to develop a nasal vaccine in the U.S. Stopping transmission Many scientists believe the nose could hold the secret to stopping coronavirus transmission, but there’s no consensus yet on whether nasal vaccines could be more effective than injectable ones, as evidence from clinical trials is necessary to prove it. Disagreement in Congress about how to pay for additional aid or whether it’s needed, as well as disinterest from major drugmakers in spending their own money on something that may not be very profitable, could mean a foreign rival gets an advantage. Writing in Science Immunology in July, Eric Topol, a professor of molecular medicine at Scripps Research, and Akiko Iwasaki, an immunobiology professor at Yale, endorsed the potential of a nasal vaccine to stop coronavirus transmission. “Breaking the chain of transmission at the individual and population level will put us in a far better position to achieve containment of the virus,” they wrote, adding that “the prospect of achieving this with nasal vaccines is high.” They called for U.S. government support in developing Operation Warp Speed 2.0, modeled on the initiative that created the first Covid-19 vaccines in record time. The Biden administration is working on that, but funding woes and pandemic fatigue have hampered its efforts. Beyond effectiveness, a nasal vaccine could appeal to people who are squeamish about needles and to parents of young children who have mostly declined to get their kids inoculated. As of early October, only 9 percent of children ages 6 months to 5 years have gotten the shots, which were authorized by the FDA in June. U.S. technology in India Outside of the government-funded research cited by Bok, two Washington University School of Medicine professors, David T. Curiel, a radiation oncologist, and Michael S. Diamond, a molecular microbiologist, invented the nasal vaccine authorized in India. Curiel and Diamond told POLITICO they created it with the needs of the developing world in mind, given the lack of ultracold freezers needed to store mRNA vaccines. The two scientists licensed their vaccine to the Indian drugmaker Bharat Biotech, which tested it in clinical trials partially financed by the Indian government. They have also tried to solicit interest from large U.S. pharmaceutical companies about it “and there was not as much excitement as we would have thought,” Diamond said. Their vaccine, named iNCOVACC in India, is based on an adenovirus that delivers the coronavirus spike protein. Bharat Biotech tested it both as a primary vaccination series and as a booster for people who were vaccinated with injectable Covid shots available in India. The company said the clinical trials had “successful results” and that side effects were comparable to those from other Covid-19 vaccines, but it has not yet published the data in a peer-reviewed scientific journal. The Indian drug regulator approved the two-dose vaccine, which comes in the form of nasal drops, for adults who have not had a previous Covid-19 shot, Bharat Biotech said. The company has the right to sell it in India and most of the rest of Asia and Africa. Elsewhere, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, a global partnership financing vaccine development for epidemic threats, is developing a plan for nasal vaccine research projects. “For example, we are looking into whether nasal vaccines could be an option for our all-in-one coronavirus vaccine program funding the development of vaccines against both Covid-19 variants and other coronaviruses,” said Melanie Saville, CEPI’s executive director of vaccine research and development. CEPI awarded nearly $5 million in seed funding to the Dutch company Intravacc for a nasal vaccine candidate that could work against multiple coronaviruses. There are now 95 nasal vaccines under development around the world, according to health data company Airfinity. Six have reached the final Phase 3 in clinical trials. Tempering expectations But some scientists doubt that a nasal vaccine will be a game-changer. William Haseltine, a former professor at Harvard Medical School with expertise in HIV/AIDS and genomics, believes that enthusiasm should be tempered about the potential of nasal vaccines to prevent infection, given that natural nasal exposure to the virus doesn’t prevent people from getting reinfected. “Why in the world do you think that if you [spray] a vaccine up the nose … you can do any better?” he asked POLITICO. Attempts to develop a nasal version of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, the injectable version of which was widely used globally at the beginning of the vaccination campaign, experienced a setback after only a minority of participants in an early stage clinical trial showed some immune response in respiratory mucous membranes. Haseltine argued that scientists still don’t have a good understanding of nasal immunity and that government funding would be better directed to antiviral drugs that keep Covid-19 in check. And Bok doesn’t think any of the existing non-injectable vaccines stop Covid-19 transmission. “I would be very surprised if India or China licensed it with data proving that an intranasal vaccine is better than the ones we have,” she said. Funding problems Curiel and Diamond have licensed their vaccine for potential use in the U.S. to Pennsylvania-based biotech Ocugen. The company is looking for both regulatory and financial support from the U.S. government to develop the vaccine as a booster, CEO Shankar Musunuri told POLITICO. But without another Operation Warp Speed, there will be substantial delays in large-scale manufacturing, regulatory approval and distribution of a nasal vaccine, argued Topol and Iwasaki. Iwasaki, who is working to develop a booster Covid-19 nasal vaccine, said she will probably need tens of millions of dollars to test it in clinical trials. “Just trying to do this as a small academic lab is very different from a Warp Speed,” she told POLITICO. That’s unlikely to happen. Congress last month passed a short-term measure to continue funding the government until Dec. 16 without any additional money for Covid-19. The White House had asked for $8 billion to fund the next generation of vaccines and therapeutics, including nasal vaccines. “There is no plan B: If Congress does not fund this, it will not happen,” Jha said. “America will fall further behind China and other countries.”

Google Pixel Fold Could Sport Samsung Display Panels, Suggests Leak – The Indian Express https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/google-pixel-fold-could-sport-samsung-display-panels-suggests-leak-the-indian-express/ The Google Pixel Fold is a highly anticipated device because it’ll present to the world Google’s take on Android for foldable devices, among other things. Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot we know about it right now – but as the rumored Q1 2023 launch date draws closer, we are seeing tidbits of information leak out. The latest throws some light on the kind of display the device will be sporting. According to developer Kuba Wojciechowscki in an exclusive by 91mobiles, the Pixel Fold will feature internal and external displays and both will be manufactured by Samsung. The larger panel on the inside will have a resolution of 1840×2208, which if you run some numbers on will give you an aspect ratio very similar to the Galaxy Z Fold4. The brightness will touch 1200 nits peak, with the typical maximum brightness standing at 800 nits. Wojciechowscki wasn’t too sure about the refresh rate but he did state that it could go up to 120Hz, which is pretty much expected in this age of ultra-smooth, high-refresh-rate displays. Meanwhile, the dimensions could be 123mm x 148mm. Moving on to the photography aspects, it was leaked earlier that the Pixel Fold might come with triple cameras, with the primary sensor being a Sony IMX787 sensor. This will be alongside an IMX386 ultra-wide lens and an S5K3J1 telephoto lens. The inner display will probably house an IMX355 sensor. Of course, it’s advisable to take all this with a pinch of salt since Google is yet to even confirm the existence of any foldable device of its own. It was earlier thought that the Pixel Fold will be hitting the shelves this year but with the year coming to a close now, that seems impossible. This is corroborated by a more recent report suggesting the foldable phone will arrive by March 2023.
