Sanibel Transmission Line Expected Be Energized Today | News, Sports, Jobs – Lehigh Acres Citizen https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/sanibel-transmission-line-expected-be-energized-today-news-sports-jobs-lehigh-acres-citizen/ LCEC and FPL crews and support workers, supported by efforts from Governor Ron DeSantis’s office, are expected to energize the transmission line on Sanibel Island some time today. It is still too early for an estimated restoration time. LCEC serves nearly 11,000 customers on Sanibel and Captiva islands. The goal is to restore power as quickly and safely as possible to those able to receive power and ensure the infrastructure is available for those who will rebuild their homes or businesses destroyed by Hurricane Ian. Travel to and from the island has been a challenge without the option of vehicular traffic. Mobilization by barge began last week and was not without challenges due to timing of tides, weight restrictions, the quantity and size of the equipment and materials, and the number of workers traveling to the island. Earlier this week, a convoy of hundreds of utility and support trucks and vehicles reached the island through a one-time emergency roadway access supported by Governor DeSantis. This expedited staging and allowed crews to begin preliminary work on the transmission and substation infrastructure. Assessment, testing, and scrubbing of critical equipment was required before energizing. Simultaneously, crews began working to set poles and prepare installation of wire and other facilities to energize the backbone of the system. In addition to hundreds of FPL line workers, the restoration operation on the island includes LCEC substation electricians, design engineers, warehouse workers, base camp coordinators, logistics experts, emergency operations representatives, and safety personnel.

Mental Health In The Metaverse: Mind-Easy Opens Clinic In Decentraland Built In
Mental Health In The Metaverse: Mind-Easy Opens Clinic In Decentraland Built In
Mental Health In The Metaverse: Mind-Easy Opens ‘Clinic’ In Decentraland – Built In https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/mental-health-in-the-metaverse-mind-easy-opens-clinic-in-decentraland-built-in/ Two years ago, an explosion in Alexandra Assouad’s hometown of Beirut, Lebanon killed 218 people, leaving Assouad emotionally devastated. She complained of tension in her arms and neck, but later realized she was suffering somatic symptoms from the stressful explosion. Assouad, who was living in Toronto at the time, partnered with three other immigrant women in the area who shared Assouad’s interest in mental health issues. Together, they launched a mental health platform with an emphasis on cultural sensitivity and understanding the mental health needs of communities that are underrepresented in mental health research. Their company, Mind-Easy, started with a mobile platform that provides mental health check-ins using AI-based avatars that help users unpack their feelings, engage with their emotions and access relevant educational resources about stress, depression and other topics. “We’re able to pick up on qualitative and quantitative data and somatic symptoms,” Assouad said. With these different inputs, Mind-Easy’s module can redirect users to the company’s content. Mind-Easy’s avatars are created with videos, not illustrations. The 30 ethnic avatars speak more than 100 languages, dialects and accents. Assouad said the company found that some users, particularly people of color, feel more comfortable sharing their secrets and insecurities with a bot that won’t judge them or project their own cultural values. Entering the Metaverse Mind-Easy recently expanded its mental health resources beyond its mobile app and into the metaverse.  On World Mental Health Day, Toronto-based Mind-Easy opened the first mental health clinic on Decentraland, a decentralized metaverse where users can buy land using an Ethereum-based currency called MANA.  Mind-Easy received grant funding to build a mental health clinic from the Decentraland community through its Decentralized Autonomous Organization [DAO], an organizational structure that allows users to vote on matters of importance to the community. On Decentraland, Mind-Easy hosts a library of more than 50 educational videos that might be of particular interest to metaverse users — issues like avoidance, gambling addiction and perception of one’s identity. Related ReadingWhat Is the Metaverse, Really? When entering the Mind-Easy mental health clinic in the metaverse, an AI bot asks users questions about their mental health. Depending on the users’ answers, the walls will change color and the music will change to create a desired atmosphere.  “Your moods and emotions are being reflected in your environment, and then it dynamically calms you down as you do the check-in,” said Akanksha Shelat, Mind-Easy’s CTO. The building also guides the user in breathing exercises. The user is encouraged to inhale when the building’s walls contract and exhale when the walls expand. The exterior of Mind-Easy’s mental health clinic in Decentraland. | Image: Mind-Easy An Emerging Market Metaverse environments give their denizens a chance to create a digital utopia, so it only makes sense that mental health clinics are cropping up in this new virtual frontier. Mind-Easy is one of several mental health startups experimenting with the healing potential of avatars, virtual reality and the metaverse. In London, mental health company Emplomind has also built a mental health clinic in Decentraland and is in the final stages of planning a launch event.  Los Angeles startup TRIPP guides virtual reality meditation sessions with immersive visual and audio experiences that mimic a psychedelic trip. Because the metaverse is relatively new, it’s yet to be seen what effect these experiments will have on mental health outcomes. While there are some concerns about users, especially children, immersing themselves in an alternate reality, the metaverse also has the potential to reduce loneliness and expand access to mental health care to those who may not have sought it out otherwise. Assouad said she shares concerns about metaverse users disassociating and losing touch with reality — a topic Mind-Easy is researching with its metaverse clinic — but she also sees an opportunity to provide mental health resources that are more culturally sensitive for people of color. “We wanted to make sure that cultural competence was one of the minimum standards when it came to the intersection of mental health and the metaverse, just because we’ve seen that wasn’t done in actual reality,” she said. “Now we have the opportunity to set the standard there.”

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed Review TrueAchievements
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed Review TrueAchievements
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed Review – TrueAchievements https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/ghostbusters-spirits-unleashed-review-trueachievements/ Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed takes the rising popularity of asymmetrical multiplayer gameplay and blends it with the wackiness of its source material. Tom grabbed his Proton Pack and had a go at ghostbusting for himself… At first glance, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed visuals may appear simplistic, and so too, many of its gameplay elements, but underneath it all is a system that not only lets you live out a fantasy of becoming a member of the famed team but also partake in plenty of shenanigans as an otherworldly being. Don’t let its welcomingly soft style fool you, as this is a game that has the ability to drown you in chaos as quickly as it seduces you with nostalgia, and it makes for a wildly good time. Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed trailer Honestly, I wasn’t expecting Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed to work quite as well as it does. Granted, some elements such as its unlockable items feel a little barebones at the moment, but overall, there is an overpowering sense of respect for the franchise and a gameplay loop that had me wanting to come back for more. The asymmetrical multiplayer genre is crammed full of violent, horror-themed games, and I love that, but it’s refreshing to play something that enjoys a death-free existence and somehow manages to make playing as a lamp feel natural — I wasn’t expecting to say something like that either, but here we are… In Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed you play one of two roles: a member of the four-member team of ‘Busters’ or the naughty Ghost attempting to haunt a location. Naturally, playing as a Buster is the main draw of the game, which focuses on putting you in the shoes of a fresh-faced recruit, the new generation of Ghostbusters. Both Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson reprise their roles as Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddemore, respectively, as mentors and experts in hunting the otherworldly critters causing havoc across New York City. Their roles help give Illfonic’s game a chance to stand on its own feet and tell its own story, as well as offer credibility to this new franchise entry. Your newfound career operates out of the iconic Firehouse, which acts as the hub for everything you do in the game — it even has an interactable Ecto Containment Unit so you can mimic emptying the Ghost Trap. I used it countless times before I realised it didn’t actually do anything. From the Firehouse, you can apply character upgrades, travel to the spirit world to modify your ghost, rewatch the story cutscenes (which is pretty much a fun cartoon you unlock in segments as you level up), load into games, marvel at Ecto-1, and see your collectable items. It’s practically an explorable menu. You should also be able to collect contracts to complete for additional XP, but it seems to be buggy and didn’t work for me. I managed to get one contract before the ability to access the table disappeared completely, but levelling is so quick, I can’t imagine the contracts would be too advantageous anyway — of the 50 available levels, I’m already at level 33 after around 15 hours of playtime. To hop into a game, you interact with a telephone on a desk — which rings until you ready up; I like that —and choose to either play with other humans or just use bots. AI companions generally have a reputation of being braindead in the majority of games, but not here! No, here they carry you through each match. They don’t do much to other players, but fellow bots can make it interesting. The single game mode sees the Ghost scaring NPCs in an attempt to fully haunt the map. A number of tools are at your disposal, such as making objects float and move around, possessing people, vomiting slime onto them, and a host of other delightful actions. You can possess many items around the map and move about while inside them, so if, like our very own Luke, you fancy spending a bit of time exploring the intricate life of a cardboard box, you can. While it’s definitely a fun activity to indulge in, it’s also one of the many tools a Ghost has for subterfuge and sabotage. As the Ghost is attempting to haunt the map, the Busters must try to stop it by capturing it in the Ghost Trap. The Ghost has three Relics hidden around the map, which the Busters need to locate and destroy to stop it from respawning while simultaneously calming the NPCs. Teamwork is key, as travelling solo raises your own fear level and decreases your ability to perform tasks. Plus, a skilled Ghost player will easily dodge your pitiful attempts to capture it alone. Alongside the famed Particle Thrower, you have a few secondary gadgets to help you out as well, such as Ionizer Pods to slow the Ghost and a Radar Puck for alerting you of the Ghost’s presence. Ghosts can fight back with their own abilities and may just decide to bring the fight to you instead of haunting the map directly, offering a fresh experience with each game you play. As I said before, you can’t die in Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed; you go into a downed state after being covered in far too much ectoplasm (slime) before getting back up again. Customisation includes both cosmetic items and upgrades to your Buster’s equipment: Proton Pack, Particle Thrower, P.K.E Metre, and Ghost Trap. Each item can be upgraded with various parts that increase or decrease its stats, such as altering the time it takes to tether a ghost, improving the speed your items cool down after overheating, and a multitude of other additions. The stats slightly affect how your Buster operates in the field, so tuning it to fit your playstyle is required, especially since the Ghost can also be upgraded. The Ghost’s upgrades come in the form of five archetypes, each hosting a number of variants with differing skills. Beginners start with the Ectoplast, which specialises in getting everyone and everything covered in slime — the game’s ‘damage.’ However, as you level up, other options become available, such as Ghosts designed to break everything around them, buff their own mini-minion army, possess humans, and various other abilities. While additional cosmetic items wouldn’t go amiss as an incentive to continue playing after level 50, I have to give a shout-out to Illfonic for the inclusion of your Gamertag as a name patch on your character’s clothing. It’s a small detail, I know, but seeing ‘DeathHuntsUs’ printed on a Ghostbuster’s t-shirt is too good not to appreciate! I’m having a blast with Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleased at the moment, thanks to the variety of gameplay opportunities you have with both the Busters and Ghosts, but it’s not without its faults sadly. Playing with Luke, who was using an Xbox Series S, saw him crash after every game, although I’ve been absolutely fine on the Series X. As I mentioned before, I can’t access the contracts menu anymore, which is pretty annoying, so I can’t comment on how useful it is or not. Overall, it’s been a really fun adventure and a breath of fresh air compared to the other titles in the genre. As for the Ghostbuster: Spirits Unleashed achievements, there really isn’t anything in the list that’s going to prove much of a challenge, and even the cumulative ones aren’t too egregious. Catastrophic Destroyer, which tasks you with causing $5 million worth of damage across your career is going to be one of the longer unlocks, but you can help that along by firing your Particle Thrower at almost everything on each map. It’s a great list, and one that won’t be too difficult to complete. Summary Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed brings a welcoming and whimsical approach to the asymmetrical multiplayer genre while ensuring that it remains faithful to the franchise’s incredible history. Taking on the Busters as a Ghost offers you plenty of opportunities to be cheeky at every turn, just as you would expect from the creatures in Aykroyd’s universe. While a couple of issues have stopped me from scoring this a little higher, I have no doubt that fans and newcomers alike will have a great time with this well-crafted gem. If you’ve grown a little tired of the dark and foreboding theme found in similar games, I highly recommend you pick up the phone and call the Ghostbusters now to apply as a new recruit. It’s time to get busting! 8 / 10 * Tom played around 15 hours of Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, unlocking 17 of 51 achievements in the process. A review copy was provided by the publisher, and played on Xbox Series X. Written by Tom West Tom has been playing video games since he was old enough to hold a controller, experimenting with systems like the Nintendo 64 and Playstation until he eventually fell in love with the Xbox 360. With a passion for the platform, he decided to make a career out of it, and now happily spends his days writing about that which he loves. If he’s not achievement hunting, you’ll likely find him somewhere in The Elder Scrolls Online.

U.S. Grocer Kroger Carts Away Albertsons For $25 Bln But Faces Antitrust Test Reuters
U.S. Grocer Kroger Carts Away Albertsons For $25 Bln But Faces Antitrust Test – Reuters https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/u-s-grocer-kroger-carts-away-albertsons-for-25-bln-but-faces-antitrust-test-reuters/ Oct 14 (Reuters) – Kroger Co (KR.N) snapped up Albertsons Cos Inc (ACI.N) in a $25 billion deal on Friday, creating a U.S. grocery behemoth to better compete with leader Walmart Inc (WMT.N) on prices while bracing for antitrust scrutiny. The mega merger between the No. 1 and 2 standalone grocers in the United States will bring under one roof nearly 5,000 stores that include banners such as Albertsons’ Safeway and Kroger-owned Ralphs and Fred Meyer. The deal could, however, stifle competition and lead to higher prices for American shoppers already grappling with this year’s surge in inflation, according to some analysts. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com To help ease those concerns, the companies have charted plans to divest some stores and Albertsons is ready to spin off a standalone unit to its shareholders immediately before the Kroger deal closes. The new public company is estimated to comprise as many as 375 stores. “We have a clear path to achieve regulatory approval with divestitures,” company executives reassured investors on a conference call on Friday, adding that it was still too early to narrow down which markets the restructuring would occur in. Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, said “these (concerns) are mostly local issues where a merger produces a very high market share in certain areas. From a broader national perspective, a combined Kroger and Albertsons does not pose any major threat to the competitive dynamics of the market.” “Scale is necessary to deliver the prices and investments that consumers demand.” Reuters Graphics Kroger logo is displayed in this illustration taken September 5, 2022. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration BATTLE FOR LOWEST PRICES With a customer base of 85 million households and 66 distribution centers, Kroger and Albertsons would together have an edge over negotiations on product prices with suppliers, including consumer goods companies, at a time when prices of groceries and essentials are soaring in the country. Kroger said it expects to reinvest about half a billion dollars of cost savings from deal synergies to reduce prices for customers. An incremental $1.3 billion will also be invested into Albertsons. Market leader Walmart has been doubling down on its own grocery business and has traditionally used its scale to demand the lowest possible prices from food and beverage suppliers, leaving rivals at a disadvantage in price negotiations. “The merger will accelerate our position as a more compelling alternative to larger and non-union competitors,” Kroger Chief Executive Officer Rodney McMullen said. Kroger will pay $34.10 for each Albertsons share, representing a premium of about 33% to the stock’s closing price on Wednesday, a day before media reports emerged of a deal between the two. read more Shares of Albertsons was down about 6% in morning trading, after closing up 11% on Thursday, while Kroger’s stock was down about 3%. Earlier in the day, Ahold Delhaize (AD.AS) shares also surged on news of a potential deal, with J.P. Morgan analysts saying that a deal would underpin the Dutch supermarket major’s own M&A appeal. Ohio-based Kroger plans to fund the deal using a combination of cash on hand and proceeds from $17.4 billion in debt financing in place from Citi and Wells Fargo. It would also have to pay Albertsons $600 million if the deal is terminated. After the deal close, which is expected in early 2024, Kroger CEO McMullen will continue to serve as the head of the combined company. I will use it as motivation to continue fostering a strong campus community, inspiring our students, and making Georgia Tech a great place to work.”  The Business Chronicle will honor the 40 Under 40 class at an event in November.

Migrants Flown Into Martha’s Vineyard Declared Crime Victims – Spectrum News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/migrants-flown-into-marthas-vineyard-declared-crime-victims-spectrum-news/ BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — Migrants transported last month from San Antonio, Texas, to Martha’s Vineyard under a program directed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis with support from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott were declared crime victims by the sheriff of Bexar County in Texas. The move will advance their special visa eligibility. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office opened an investigation into the Sept. 19 migrant case, looking into possibly charging the suspects involved with unlawful restraint, since the transportation plans were misrepresented to the travelers. I have officially opened a criminal investigation against the individual(s) who lured and transported 48 migrants from the Migrant Resource Center in San Antonio, TX to Martha’s Vineyard. If you or someone you know has been impacted, please email bcsotips@bexar.org — SheriffSalazar (@sheriffsalazar) September 20, 2022 Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the certification forms he filed on Thursday can serve to hold visas for crime victims or witnesses to certain crimes, according to immigration lawyers. “Based upon the claims of migrants being transported from Bexar County under false pretenses, we are investigating this case as possible Unlawful Restraint,” Bexar County Sheriff Salazar said in a statement. “We have submitted documentation through the federal system to ensure the migrants’ availability as witnesses during the investigation.” An NBC article reports that Boston-based attorney Rachel Self is representing five of the transported migrants. Self met with Salazar in San Antonio to organize the required certifications for all 49 migrants to start the U-1 nonimmigrants visas, “U visas,” application. According to NBC, these certifications are set aside “for victims of certain crimes who have suffered mental or physical abuse and could help law enforcement or government officials investigate or prosecute criminal activity.” Quoting Salazar, he said, “We have suspects identified, however at this point in the investigation, we are not at liberty to release those names publicly or confirm any identities. Only those who were physically in our jurisdiction at the time of the offense are considered suspects.” Citing a statement from Self in an email via NBC, these past couple of weeks, she’s been working hand-in-hand with Salazar and BCSO to aid in their investigation, from leading interviews and archiving reports, images and footage. From NBC, Self said: “No matter what your political beliefs are, these people are all crime victims. These certifications will ensure that the migrants can continue to help our law enforcement officials, and that they will be able to process and heal from the incredibly traumatic experiences they have suffered as a result of the cruel, heartless acts committed against them.” Salazar stated that updated information will be released as it becomes available.

4 Ways To Have A Frightfully-Fun Time In Wisconsin This Halloween Season – Travel Wisconsin https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/4-ways-to-have-a-frightfully-fun-time-in-wisconsin-this-halloween-season-travel-wisconsin/ By Shelby Deering Photo by @cherylhonigford While Halloween may be a holiday that many people look forward to year after year, everyone celebrates it a little differently! Some folks find their fun and excitement at haunted houses, while others are content to sit back with some candy corn and admire a lit-up pumpkin display. Luckily, Wisconsin offers experiences and events for each “Halloween personality” out there. Ahead, pick the category that screams “you” for Halloween and choose your own spooky or sweet adventure. Spine-Tingling Experiences for Horror Thrill Seekers Here in Wisconsin, we don’t just have haunted houses—we have entire haunted experiences guaranteed to give you and your pals the willies. If you’re someone who loves to be scared down to the tips of your toes, look no further than Burial Chamber in Neenah, the Midwest’s largest haunted complex with two different haunted houses, the spookiest woods ever and an immersive experience called “Trapped Buried Alive.” Other hair-raising happenings include Mount Horeb’s Terror at Tyrol (you’ve never seen a ski hill like this…), Mount Pleasant’s Abandoned Haunted House Complex and Merrill’s The Haunted Sawmill. For a uniquely-scary experience you and your fellow happy haunts won’t soon forget, go to Connell’s Field of Screams in Chippewa Falls for a hayride turned terrifying or book a trip on the Dells Ghost Boat in Wisconsin Dells for a moonlit voyage into a haunted canyon. Or you could sign up for an American Ghost Walk in Bayfield to learn all about the monsters and ghouls that frequent these parts. You and your friends will be talking about these bone-chilling experiences for weeks. Frightfully-Fun Events for the Whole Family For some family-friendly spooks that don’t go bump in the night, pack up the little ones for Boo at the Zoo at the Milwaukee County Zoo. Filled with decorations the kiddos will love, a haystack maze and Halloween-themed train rides, you’ll snap plenty of pics of your costumed kids posing alongside their favorite animals. Madison hosts its own Family Halloween downtown, complete with hayrides around the Capitol Square, art projects and trick-or-treating. At the Cave of the Mounds in Blue Mounds, don’t miss HOLLOWeen at the Cave, a guided experience in which littles will get their own reusable cloth bags and “trick or treat” for crystals and fossils throughout the cave tour. At Old World Wisconsin in Eagle, add Halloween Legends and Lore to your itinerary, where you can explore the historic village in the moonlight, readied with storytelling and performances that are sure to delight everyone in your family. Spell-Binding Sweets for Sugar Fanatics ‘Tis the season for candy, and lots of it. If you and your clan can’t get enough of the sweet stuff, Wisconsin has you covered, from trick-or-treating galore to Halloween-decorated candy shops. To get all dressed up and have plenty of places to go, look to a myriad of trick-or-treating events around the state, like Trick-or-Treat at the Ballpark, hosted by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers minor-league baseball team at their stadium in Appleton—there’ll be treats, of course, along with face-painting and balloon artistry. Manitowish Waters has their Trick-or-Trunk-or-Treat event, where local businesses and participating cars will be ready to hand out sweets to little ones in their Halloween best. If you want to make your sugar-fueled Wisconsin vacation truly epic, look no further than Uncle Tom’s Candy Store in Ellison Bay, where they go all-out with amazing Halloween decorations served up alongside their homemade chocolate, fudge and brittle. Head to Wisconsin Dells to go to the largest candy store in the state: Goody Goody Gumdrop and look on as your kids gleefully run from candy bin to candy bin—and don’t forget to grab something sweet for yourself, too. Fall-Inspired Haunts for Pumpkin-Spice Enthusiasts Perhaps your idea of the perfect spooky season involves pumpkin-patch frolicking and all manner of hot drinks. For a Halloween trip that celebrates autumn at its finest in Wisconsin, visit Meadowbrook Pumpkin Farm & Market in West Bend for their Creepy Cornfield, a day and night corn maze filled with characters and scenes (and for a family-friendly bonus, no scary characters will jump out). Or go to Whitefish Bay for their Great Pumpkin Festival in Old Schoolhouse Park, where visitors can enjoy grand displays of lit-up, carved pumpkins. But to get the full-on fall-meets-Halloween experience brimming with things like a pirate ship, hayrides, face-painting, pumpkin-picking and even a haunted granary, you’ve gotta head to Waldvogel’s Pumpkin Farm in Juneau — Wisconsin’s largest pumpkin farm is a must-visit, and you’ll make so many fall memories with your entire family. The committee is co-chaired by Kimberly Cline, president of Long Island University and Dr. Patrick O’Shaughnessy, president and CEO of Catholic Health. Sanibel Transmission Line Expected Be Energized Today | News, Sports, Jobs – Sanibel-Captiva Islander https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/sanibel-transmission-line-expected-be-energized-today-news-sports-jobs-sanibel-captiva-islander/ LCEC officials reported that LCEC and FPL crews and support workers, supported by efforts from the governor’s office, are expected to energize the transmission line on Sanibel some time today, Oct. 14. It is still early for an estimated restoration time, officials reported. LCEC serves nearly 11,000 customers on Sanibel and Captiva. Officials reported that the goal is to restore power as quickly and safely as possible to those able to receive power and ensure the infrastructure is available for those who will rebuild homes or businesses destroyed by Hurricane Ian. Officials reported that travel to and from the island has been a challenge without the option of vehicular traffic. Mobilization by barge began last week but was not without challenges due to the timing of the tides, weight restrictions, the quantity and size of the equipment and materials, and the number of workers traveling to the island. Earlier this week, a convoy of hundreds of utility and support trucks and vehicles reached the island through a one-time emergency roadway access. This expedited staging and allowed crews to begin preliminary work on the transmission and substation infrastructure. Assessment, testing and scrubbing of critical equipment was required before energizing, officials reported. Simultaneously, crews began working to set poles and prepare installation of wire and other facilities to energize the backbone of the system. Officials reported that in addition to hundreds of FPL line workers, the restoration operation on the island includes LCEC substation electricians, design engineers, warehouse workers, base camp coordinators, logistics experts, emergency operations representatives and safety personnel.

Hello Metaverse: Google Fiber To Launch Even Faster Broadband (8 Gigabits) In 2023 WRAL TechWire
Hello, Metaverse: Google Fiber To Launch Even Faster Broadband (8 Gigabits) In 2023 – WRAL TechWire https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/hello-metaverse-google-fiber-to-launch-even-faster-broadband-8-gigabits-in-2023-wral-techwire/ by WRAL TechWire — October 14, 2022 RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – Google Fiber plans to quadruple its fiber internet service offerings to as high as 8 gigabits – and it’s looking for people to test the higher speeds. But not right now in the Triangle, unfortunately. Currently its fastest offering is 2 gigabits. Xfinity offers the fastest service nationally at 6 gigabits, according to a CNET survey. Two gigabits is the fasts available speed in the Triangle from a variety of providers. Google Fiber announced this week plans to begin offering 5 gigabit and 8 gigabit service early next year – with those speeds available for download as well as upload. Early testers of the service are being sought in Utah, Kansas City and Des Moines, Iowa. The fiber provider also plans to include a Wi-Fi router plus as many as two “mesh extenders” for wireless access and installation. The upgrades come as Google Fiber expands in service footprint in the Triangle and Charlotte. It’s also facing more competition with broadband providers expanding across the state, often boosted into areas lacking service by government grants. “Google Fiber brought you 1 Gig in 2010, 2 Gig in 2020, and 5 and 8 Gig in 2022 (and we’re already testing 20,000 megabits in the field) … the future is fast, and it’s about to get faster,” says Amalia O’Sullivan, Director of Product Management at Google Fiber. Broadband provider investing $50M for ultra fast internet in Durham, Orange counties A promise of “less lag” Why so much speed? Think metaverse – and beyond. “While 2 Gig answered the call for many gamers and power streamers,  5 Gig and 8 Gig are designed for even heavier internet users — creative professionals, people working in the cloud or with large data, households with large shared internet demands,” O’Sullivan explains in a blog post. “People who create and utilize large files need the ability to transfer them efficiently. For those who work on the cloud or in real time, like with financial transactions, it’s helpful to know there’s less lag between pushing send and making something happen. 5 Gig and 8 Gig can help these customers take on whatever they need online and be ready for whatever is coming next.” Prices are $150 a month for 8 gigabits and $125 a month for 5 gigabits. Current prices are $100 a month for 2 gigabit and $70 a month for one gigabit. Google Fiber also says there are no contracts required, no data caps, and no installation fees. Scrubbing Your Oven With A Dishwasher Tablet Tops Best Cleaning Hacks List – Yahoo Entertainment https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/scrubbing-your-oven-with-a-dishwasher-tablet-tops-best-cleaning-hacks-list-yahoo-entertainment/ It’s time to re-think your cleaning methods. (Getty Images) Are you after some foolproof cleaning hacks? It seems you’re not alone, with Google searches for ‘cleaning tips’ up 200% this year. While none of us love taking the bins out or washing up, it has to be done, which is why we’re all keen to get the job done in a way that saves time and money, especially in the current climate. This helps to explain why the average household uses three ‘self-created’ cleaning hacks and spends an hour each week on social media searching for the most effective tips for housework, decorating and DIY, and gardening, according to Wilko-led research. But look no further, as the top 10 cleaning hacks have now been revealed by the brand, with the best advice collated from its in-house team, influencers and customers, ready to share with guests (and now you) as it hosted the world’s first cleaning festival this week. Read more: Woman shares time-saving life hack she uses when hanging out washing Cleaning doesn’t have to be a a mountainous task. (Getty Images) The number one tip is to use a dishwasher tablet to clean the oven. Alll you need to do is dampen the tablet and then give the inside of the oven a good scrub to gently but effectively de-grease and remove food stains. Remember to rinse the inside of the stove a couple times afterwards with a damp cloth. The next hack is to soak a paper towel in a little scented disinfectant and pop it underneath the black bin-liner bag at the bottom of the bin. This will keep it smelling fresher for longer, and while it might not make changing it enjoyable, it will definitely improve the experience. For all the parents out there, the third top hack is to make sure you shop for washable paint. This easy switch will allow you to get rid of any marks or scuffs from excitable play times with complete ease. Say goodbye to paint-stained walls. Read more: ‘GBBO’ viewers shocked by contestant’s unusual avo hack: Can you peel an avocado? Switch up the way you clean your oven. (Getty Images) Completing the top five hacks, Wilko also advises washing salad drawers in the dishwasher and using a cotton but to tackle trapped dirt or dust in the rubber seal, as well as lining them with kitchen paper to throw away leftover veggies or food debris with ease (if you’ve missed your chance to use them for something else, that is). Other hacks on the list (found below) include creative tips to clean the carpet, transform washing up and save money in multiple ways. “Everyone loves finding a new way to tackle a job around the house; be it a way to make it more fun, simpler to sort or more affordable, and I really enjoyed sharing my own advice with guests as well as getting some inspiration for new tips and tricks,” Lynsey Crombie, The Queen of Clean, said at the festival. Read more: How to stop arguing about the heating and keep your home warm this winter Lynsey Crombie, Queen of Clean, at the wilko ‘Clean Fest’ in Leeds, 12 October. (wilko) Here is the full list compiled by Wilko, ready for you to get stuck into today (if you can face it….): Top 10 cleaning hacks Use a dishwasher tablet to clean the oven. Simply dampen the tablet, then scrub the oven interior for a gently abrasive clean that gets rid of grease and food stains. Don’t forget to rinse the inside of the stove a few times afterwards with a damp cloth Soak a paper towel in scented disinfectant to keep bin fresher. Just pop it beneath the black bag at the bottom of the bin Shop for washable paint if you have kids. It means getting rid of any marks or scuffs from boisterous play will be a doddle Make light work of keeping the fridge clean. Wash salad drawers in the dishwasher and use a cotton bud to lift any dirt or dust that’s trapped in the rubber seal Line the salad drawers with kitchen paper. This is so it’s easy to dispose of any inedible vegetable debris and save you scooping out that gunk After hoovering, slip on a rubber glove and wipe it along the carpet. This will quickly pick up any remaining hair (although a specific pet hair cleaner or dustpan and brush with rubber bristles is much more effective for a deep clean) For smaller patches of damp, use moisture absorbers. This is as an alternative to dehumidifiers, which can be expensive to run. Using damp seal can also help to effectively disguise any patches of discolouration ahead of decorating with paper or fresh paint Keep central heating working at its best and save money on energy bills. You just need to remember to bleed radiators at least twice a year using a key Wash dishes heavy in starch or dairy in cold water. Soak something that’s had a shepherd’s pie, for example, this way rather than in hot water as you would for other dishes. The cool water reacts with the ingredients to better lift them from the cooking equipment Add a drop of laundry disinfectant if washing clothes at a lower temperature or on a cold wash. This will help you make an energy bill saving, as the liquid will kill germs without the need to switch to an option that’s set at 30 degrees or more Watch: Make the most of an old toothbrush with these cleaning hacks

This Week In Crypto News: Inflation Slows SushiSwap Horseplay & LUNA BeInCrypto
This Week In Crypto News: Inflation Slows, SushiSwap Horseplay & LUNA – BeInCrypto https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/this-week-in-crypto-news-inflation-slows-sushiswap-horseplay-luna-beincrypto/ Crypto news: It has been another glorious week in the crypto market, the only industry where sushi and horses go hand in hand. This week in crypto news, we spoke with the face of EthereumPoW, Chandler Guo, as well as Lyn Ulbricht, the mother of Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht. Elsewhere, Justin Sun paid a whopping $1 billion for Huobi, and Elon Musk was unmasked as definitely not Satoshi Nakamoto. Finally, in economic news, U.S. inflation slowed a teeny tiny incy wincy little bit.  Let’s do this. Vitalik Buterin Get Both Barrels EthereumPoW (ETHW) proponent Chandler Guo put Vitalik Buterin firmly in his place in an explosive interview with BeInCrypto earlier this week. According to Guo, a proof-of-work Ethereum without Vitalik Buterin is like Bitcoin without Satoshi Nakamoto – maybe better! If that wasn’t incendiary enough, Guo went on to add that it is now time for Buterin to “shut up” and let Guo and friends get on with building EthereumPoW. Mic drop. On Monday, we brought you an interview with Lyn Ulbricht, the mother of Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, to separate the man from the myth. Ross is currently serving two life consecutive life sentences without parole, plus another 40 years just to be sure. The American justice system doesn’t do half-measures. We also spoke with Thy-Diep Ta about Unit Masters, a crypto literacy course that hopes to boost mainstream adoption, and if education is your thing, then you can head on over to BeInCrypto’s learn section.  U.S. Inflation Slows Slowly. But It’s Still Bad The consumer price index (CPI) – the primary measure of inflation – dropped 0.1% to 8.2% in Sept., down from 8.3% in Aug. Months of gut-busting interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve seem to have finally had some impact, and even though it’s only minimal, it’s a start. CPI Data: US Bureau of Labor Statistics What now? Expect more of the same, with a further interest rate rise in Nov. now looking very likely. SushiSwap Head Chef Gets in the Saddle Jared Grey, the new “Head Chef” of SushiSwap was no sooner in the door before the accusations and fur started to fly. According to one community member Grey is a “a scammer and con artist,” and according to another source he likes to ride horses without the aid of a saddle. For his part Grey said “the accusations towards me are 100% untrue.” Justin Sun Bags Huobi Crypto Exchange TRON (TRX) price got a boost this week when it was revealed that Justin Sun was behind a $1 billion deal to buy a major crypto exchange. According to various media crypto news reports Sun is the lead investor in the Huobi takeover, with a little help from Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF).  Meanwhile, SBF has announced a series of improvements to FTX’s matching engine. For that reason, don’t be surprised if Huobi shortly announces a series of improvements to its matching engine. After all, there’s no innovation in crypto that Justin Sun can’t imitate to a reasonably satisfactory standard. One exchange he won’t be rushing to copy in a hurry is Binance. This week the exchange was accused of filing “grossly inaccurate” financial statements in the U.K. Needless to say, this doesn’t sound good for Changpeng Zhao and company. Binance has already been the subject of a warning from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) so this story may have some mileage in the weeks and months ahead.  The Weekly Do Kwon Update Definitely not on the run Do Kwon has been cashing out Terra (LUNA) to a Binance wallet while simultaneously shilling the new coin on Twitter. This, according to former Terra proponent turned whistleblower, FatManTerra, who has become a nemesis of sorts for UST.  As for Do Kwon, his Singapore vacation may soon come to an end as it has been revealed that his passport is about to expire. Elon Musk Is Not Satoshi Elon Musk is not Satoshi Nakamoto, but that hasn’t stopped speculation and claims to the contrary. While there have been some wild theories on the real identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the notion that Elon Musk could conceive of Bitcoin, plan it, code it, launch it, tell absolutely nobody that it was him, and then keep the secret for over a decade doesn’t pass the smell test. In fact, it kind of stinks. In a further olfactory insult, Musk launched a new perfume called “Burnt Hair,” this week, available to buy with Dogecoin. Crypto Hacker Has Seriously Big Mangos Crypto news of a hacker exploiting the Solana DeFi platform Mango Markets to the tune of $117 million broke this week. In a particularly ballsy move, the hacker then filed a proposal with the Mango Markets decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) to pay himself a $70 million bug bounty. To add further to the ridiculousness of the move, the hacker then used the stolen tokens to vote in favor of the proposal. That however, was a bridge too far, with the plan voted down by the rest of the community. Still, you’ve got to admire his mangos. Thanks for joining us for This Week In Crypto News. Analysis | The Fed’s Next Crisis Is Brewing In US Treasuries – The Washington Post https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/analysis-the-feds-next-crisis-is-brewing-in-us-treasuries-the-washington-post/ Markets have been whipsawed in recent weeks, first by talk that a cooling labor market would allow the Federal Reserve to “pivot” away from its aggressive interest-rate hiking campaign, and then by comments from central bankers that any such move would be premature — as Thursday’s hot consumer price index report proved. Perhaps there’s a solution that would allow the Fed to continue to battle inflation while also addressing what is rapidly becoming a potential crisis in the world’s most important market — US Treasuries. The word “crisis” is not hyperbole. Liquidity is quickly evaporating. Volatility is soaring. Once unthinkable, even demand at the government’s debt auctions is becoming a concern. Conditions are so worrisome that Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen took the unusual step Wednesday of expressing concern about a potential breakdown in trading, saying after a speech in Washington that her department is “worried about a loss of adequate liquidity” in the $23.7 trillion market for US government securities. Make no mistake, if the Treasury market seizes up, the global economy and financial system will have much bigger problems than elevated inflation.  But rather than slow, or even stop, the pace of rate increases, which would only resurrect the notion that there’s indeed a Fed “put” designed to bail out investors, the central bank could choose to slow quantitative tightening. Whereas quantitative easing, or QE, injects liquidity into the financial system through bond purchases, QT has the opposite effect. Instead of selling bonds, the Fed is allowing the $9 trillion or so of US Treasuries and mortgage securities it has accumulated on its balance sheet since the 2008 financial crisis to mature without replacing them. The amount of QT conducted by the Fed ramped up to the maximum of $95 billion per month in September from $47.4 billion. The thing is, just like there’s no strong evidence that many years of QE had the desired effect of sparking inflation, it’s unlikely that QT will help temper inflation. What it is more likely to do – and is probably already doing – is cause havoc in the government bond market, the benchmark for all other markets that determine the cost of money for governments, companies and consumers. A Bloomberg index shows liquidity in the Treasury market is worse now than during the early days of the pandemic and the lockdowns, when no one knew what to expect. Similarly, implied volatility as measured by the ICE BofA MOVE Index is near its highest since 2009. And in an unusual development that shows just how dysfunctional the Treasury market has become, the newest, most liquid securities, known as on-the-run notes, trade at a discount to older, tougher-to-trade off-the-run securities, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Daily swings in interest-rate swaps have become extreme, proving further evidence of disappearing liquidity. What should be most concerning to the Fed and the Treasury Department is deteriorating demand at US debt auctions. A key measure called the bid-to-cover ratio at the government’s offering Wednesday of $32 billion in benchmark 10-year notes was more than  one standard deviation below the average for the last year, according to Bloomberg News. Demand from indirect bidders, generally seen as a proxy for foreign demand, was the lowest since March 2021, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Although the Treasury is in no jeopardy of suffering a “failed auction,” lower demand means the government is paying more to borrow.   All this is coming as Bloomberg News reports that the biggest, most powerful buyers of Treasuries – from Japanese pensions and life insurers to foreign governments and US commercial banks – are all pulling back at the same time. “We need to find a new marginal buyer of Treasuries as central banks and banks overall are exiting stage left,” Glen Capelo, who spent more than three decades on Wall Street bond-trading desks and is now a managing director at Mischler Financial, told Bloomberg News. The US bond market, which sets the tone for debt markets worldwide, is hardly alone. The ructions in UK gilts the last two weeks laid bare the liquidity crisis bubbling in most major sovereign debt markets. From the Fed’s perspective, it’s probably hesitant to tinker with QT for fear of being seen as more concerned with bailing out Wall Street fat cats than taming inflation. But, again, QE and QT have been shown to have more of an impact on the smooth functioning of the financial system than the real economy. And it’s not like the Fed hasn’t tweaked its QT program before to address disruptions in the market’s plumbing. Recall that in 2019 the central bank halted QT and flooded the banking system with cash to arrest a large and unsettling rise in repo rates that led to undue stresses. Another option is for the Fed to use its standing repurchase facility to provide a liquidity backstop to the Treasury market, which Yellen said, “can be helpful.”  The thinking among market participants is that the Fed will keep raising rates until something “breaks.” That something increasingly looks like it may be the Treasury market, which would be the worst-case scenario on anyone’s scorecard. Time is running out for the Fed to act.  More From Bloomberg Opinion: • The UK Cannot Afford to Look This Ridiculous: John Authers • What Comes After a Week That Shook the World: John Authers • The Strong Dollar Is About to Pay Some Dividends: Robert Burgess This column does not necessarily reflect the opinion of the editorial board or Bloomberg LP and its owners. KlayMeta: The All-In-One NFT Game Bringing Web3 Gaming To The Masses NFTgators
KlayMeta: The All-In-One NFT Game Bringing Web3 Gaming To The Masses NFTgators
KlayMeta: The All-In-One NFT Game Bringing Web3 Gaming To The Masses – NFTgators https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/klaymeta-the-all-in-one-nft-game-bringing-web3-gaming-to-the-masses-nftgators/ Quick take: KlayMeta has built an all-in-one gaming ecosystem for web3 gamers. The blockchain game developer has prioritised making fun games rather than unsustainable money-making tools. KlayMeta developers believe that building strong communities is the key to bringing success to web3 games. Blockchain games are widely seen as the future of gaming within the crypto space. Yet as venture capital firms continue to pour money into the industry, a larger population of the mainstream gaming market refuses to be swayed. References can be made to Ubisoft’s failed attempt to bring in-game assets to Ghost Recon, or even more recently, Minecraft’s decision to ban NFTs from its platform. Such has been the wild west of crypto gaming. Mainstream gamers believe that the current play-to-earn blockchain gaming model is driven by greed, which often contributes to lower-quality games. This has become a major problem for avid gamers in the community who only want to have fun. Enter Play-and-Earn Blockchain game developers have adopted a more conservative model dubbed, play-and-earn to remedy the situation. This concept focuses on building game economies that focus on creating fun games with some elements of ownership and crypto rewards.  Because the focus is on building communities by onboarding mainstream gamers, some blockchain game makers looking to start from scratch find it hard to hit their targets. On the other hand, mainstream game makers looking to add some form of earning mechanism to their games without compromising on quality face strong opposition from their communities. This creates a quandary that can be solved by linking the two sets of players together via a platform that allows willing players to utilise blockchain-based characters and features in their game without disrupting the economic model of the game they are playing. Crypto gamers looking to play high-quality games without leaving the blockchain can also profit from the same platform. There aren’t many web3 platforms that can provide such an experience. Here is where KlayMeta, a web3 gaming ecosystem built on Klayton blockchain, South Korea’s leading blockchain network, comes in. KlayMeta is a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG) built on the Klaytn blockchain. The game is scheduled to go multi-chain with the addition of the BNB Chain in October, thus giving players access to more crypto products. The game is powered by the play-and-earn model, where players can earn rewards and NFTs from their playing activity. KlayMeta also comes with an in-house NFT platform, allowing players to swap and trade tokens, as well as, convert in-game NFT assets into KlayMeta utility token $META.  The Problem KlayMeta plans to solve KlayMeta is built to solve one of the blockchain gaming industry’s nagging issues. The platform wants to give smaller blockchain game platforms an opportunity to gain players from the mainstream, thus accelerating community growth. On the other hand, On the other hand, traditional gaming titles looking to offer their players an opportunity to experiment with NFTs and crypto do not have to integrate the full concept into their games. This protects them from facing backlash from traditional gamers. One beneficiary of this concept is Hero Blaze: Three Kingdoms, a mobile game that operates entirely off-chain. Players earn MUDOL stones when playing the game, which can be exchanged for $MUDOL2 tokens on the KlayMeta platform. Thus, KlayMeta’s gaming platform acts as an all-in-one gaming metaverse that links the mainstream to the blockchain, helping to onboard the masses to web3/bring web3 to the masses. The company’s game also offers some unique gaming concepts and characters including the ability to fuse NFT avatars to gain more powers and skills. KlayMeta’s platform allows players to leverage off-chain products without disrupting their gameplay. This enables them to exchange the native game token for off-chain tokens and vice versa. The game has sought to separate on-chain activities from off-chain events, thus eliminating any chances of gameplay disruption. Activities such as in-game transactions and wallet connections do not interfere with the gameplay. Looking forward From a hindsight view, the KlayMeta gaming platform still has a long way to go before reaching its target goal. Based on KlayMeta’s roadmap, the grand launch of the game is scheduled for Q1 in 2023, coupled with an update to its planned exchange set to debut in November. The company is still adding new features to the game, like summon and fusion, which may take the community some time to understand. While fusion allows players to generate new NFT characters by combining a base avatar with a sacrifice avatar, summon allows players to call upon an NFT avatar of their liking. Both these activities require players to spend in-game tokens. Stay up to date: Google News Twitter Telegram LinkedIn Facebook TikTok

Q&A: What Does Sunwing Mean By More More More? CMO Samantha Taylor Explains PAX News
Q&A: What Does Sunwing Mean By “More, More, More?” CMO Samantha Taylor Explains – PAX News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/qa-what-does-sunwing-mean-by-more-more-more-cmo-samantha-taylor-explains-pax-news/ More value, more experiences. That’s the message behind a new creative campaign Sunwing launched on Thursday (Oct. 13) entitled “More, More, More,” which hones in on what customers “really want” from their all-inclusive getaways. The vibrant commercial, reflective of the carefree vibe of the 1970s (and appropriately set to the 1976 disco hit “More, More, More” by Andrea True Connection), aims to show how Canadians can “do more, explore more and celebrate more in destination.” While Sunwing has always maintained an element of fun in its marketing, the ad spot represents a reimagining of the tour operator’s value proposition and brand persona as it responds to a changed marketplace shaped by eliminated COVID-19 border measures and travel-ready Canadians. “With so much change over the past two years, it was important for us to listen to our customers and find out what matters most to them as we prepared for our winter season,” Samantha Taylor, chief marketing officer at Sunwing Travel Group, said yesterday. READ MORE: Sunwing’s catchy new ad promotes “More, More, More” value, experiences The new campaign launches almost one month after Sunwing announced à la carte airline pricing aimed at reducing costs for customers by ensuring they pay only for services they want and need. What does Sunwing mean, exactly, by offering customers More, More, More? PAX followed up with Taylor to get all the answers. PAX: What’s driving the market’s desire to “get more” from an all-inclusive vacation?  Samantha Taylor (ST): Coming out of the past two-plus years, there’s a strong desire among Canadians to maximize their time on vacation, and soak up as much of the destination as possible. This includes doing more, experiencing more and celebrating more – the perfect recipe for a truly unforgettable vacation experience, and we’re proud to be able to overdeliver on that at Sunwing. PAX: Sunwing’s new campaign emphasizes value. What does this say about the direction Sunwing is going? How does Sunwing define the word “value.”  ST: Value is not just about price – it’s about price and MORE. We are already well known for offering accessibly priced all-inclusive vacations and that will not change. But value also goes beyond price – it’s about the experience you get when you travel with Sunwing, and the excitement and energy that comes with doing more on your hard-earned getaway. Sunwing offers over 700 top-rated hotels and resorts down south, along with more than 100 top-ranked excursions across 30-plus destinations. When customers travel with us, they are getting more at every step. PAX: The cost of travel is going up. How is Sunwing tackling this issue and staying competitive?  ST: Offering more affordable travel has always been in our DNA and that will not change. Although inflation is a growing concern for Canadians, it has only served to reinforce that our value proposition is very important. Canadians want value, and that includes not only price but opportunities to do more, experience more and celebrate more in destination. PAX: On promising more value and experiences: is Sunwing changing the way its packages are built? Is the company introducing new products or services?  ST: We are continuously innovating to provide customers with greater value and experiences. Our new positioning is all about helping Canadians save on upfront costs so they can really unlock the most value while in destination. With that in mind, we are always looking for ways to evolve our products and services to better serve our customers and this includes looking at ways to offer more Sunwing-exclusive perks with our partner resorts, from discounts on spa packages to room upgrades, special offers for weddings and groups, and more! PAX: In comparing 2019 to now, what’s changed about the way sun vacations are marketed and sold? ST: After a difficult few years, Canadians are craving experiences more than ever before. They want to have fun, enjoy life and soak up as much as they can while on vacation, from trying out different excursions to taking advantage of room upgrades, indulging in spa treatments – and more. PAX: What’s your advice to travel advisors as the winter season rolls in?  ST: Demand for travel is surging, and we are already seeing capacity increase by more than 140 per cent over last year. We value our relationships with travel advisors and know that our mutual customers rely on them for information on the best deals, resorts and destination tips. With demand for winter travel continuing to increase, we encourage travel advisors to help customers book their upcoming vacations in advance so they can unlock the most value on their next Sunwing vacation. AFRICA/BURKINA FASO Insecurity Affects The Living Conditions Of The Local Population And Internally Displaced Persons Agenzia Fides
AFRICA/BURKINA FASO – Insecurity Affects The Living Conditions Of The Local Population And Internally Displaced Persons – Agenzia Fides https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/africa-burkina-faso-insecurity-affects-the-living-conditions-of-the-local-population-and-internally-displaced-persons-agenzia-fides/ Friday, 14 October 2022 Cadis Bourzanga (Agenzia Fides) – The city of Bourzanga, in northern Burkina Faso, is difficult to access due to the presence of armed groups along the road. This uncertainty is also affecting an aid program initiated by the Camillian Foundation CADIS International in collaboration with CADIS Burkina Faso to support the villagers in the post-pandemic period. Just a few weeks ago there was an attack on a supply convoy on the Djibo-Bourzanga road that killed more than 42 civilians. A part of the CADIS team already had to leave the area and go to a safer place. “The situation has been critical for several months and we have been forced to suspend all travel to Bourzanga,” said Father Marius Soussago, MI, President of CADIS Burkina Faso. The last on-site visit by the CADIS BF team took place on October 28, 2021 and several attempts at on-site visits had to be canceled due to the deteriorating general situation (see Fides, 29/7/2022). “The population of the village where our clinic is located, which we reopened in collaboration with the Sisters of Sainte Marie de Torfou, has moved to safer areas. All the staff of the health center and the community of sisters also left Bourzanga at the end of April 2022” , reports Father Marius. “Although the first phase of the project has been successful and has had a positive impact on the living conditions of the local population and internally displaced people in Bourzanga,” added Bertrand Sawadogo, Parish priest of Bourzanga and local correspondent of the project – we are helplessly witnessing the situation of insecurity which is paralyzing the second phase of the project. Unfortunately, the number of displaced people has quadrupled. We are awaiting the return of our local manager to assess the next steps of the project and we still believe that some activities can continue “. The two-year project, which runs from March 2021 to February 2023, is primarily intended for internally displaced people in the city, 157 km from Ouagadougou, and mainly includes the health and psychosocial care of the displaced population of Bourzanga, the expansion of water supply points and the creation of a healthy living environment by building a well with a solar pump system and water storage tower, and building a canal to supply water to the parish. In addition, the food security of the internally displaced persons is to be improved. Although the means of “CADIS Burkina Faso” are rather modest compared to the extent of their needs, the locals are happy about the courage and the closeness of the aid organization’s employees. “We hope that security will return in the areas where we work and also in other parts of the country. This is necessary so that we can complete the project and carry out reconstruction measures for the return of the internally displaced people to their homes. All these projects require funds that we do not have yet, but which we entrust to the mercy of God”. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 14/10/2022) Share:

James Bond: The Coolest Cars From The Franchise, Ranked – MovieWeb https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/james-bond-the-coolest-cars-from-the-franchise-ranked-movieweb/ James Bond has always been associated with cool cars, even when he was just a fictional character in a collection of novels, before making the leap to film. Now with 25 movies in the series over the past 60 years, six different Bond actors (and their stunt doubles) have driven dozens of vehicles on-screen, from an underpowered Citroën 2CV to a Caterpillar excavator to a moon buggy. The latest film, No Time To Die, saw Bond choosing a Land Rover in retirement. But the automobiles most associated with the character are beautiful and powerful sports cars. Here are our rankings for the 8 coolest cars from the James Bond franchise. 8/8 Sunbeam Alpine Series II – Dr. No (1962) United Artists While James Bond would eventually become synonymous with gadget-filled Aston Martins, in the very first film, Dr. No in 1962, producers had to settle for the sportiest car they could find on location in Jamaica. That was a lake blue Sunbeam Alpine Series II convertible that looked particularly small with 6 foot 2 inch Sean Connery driving. There were no upgrades, either in real life or by Q Branch, so it was up to Bond to drive his way out of trouble, which he did, sending his pursuers over a cliff in the first of many such scenes to come. 7/8 Toyota 2000GT – You Only Live Twice (1967) United Artists Bond doesn’t actually drive the Toyota 2000GT in 1967’s You Only Live Twice. But as a passenger, he gets to enjoy the many special upgrades, including a television screen, which undoubtedly seemed very futuristic to audiences at the time. The real-life car likely caught producer Cubby Broccoli’s eye while he was in Tokyo, but Toyota had to custom-build two models for the movie, removing the top to fit Connery, thus turning the coupe into a roadster. The appearance reportedly gave the company some legitimacy internationally and boosted sales on its way to becoming the world’s largest car manufacturer. 6/8 BMW 750iL – Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Some gadgets first seen in Bond cars did eventually make their way to the public. In 1997, Pierce Brosnan as Bond drove his BMW 750iL with his mobile phone in Tomorrow Never Dies. Cell phones were still years away from being ubiquitous, and it would be a decade before smartphones began to take over, so the idea of controlling a vehicle with one was well ahead of its time. These days, it’s common to hail a ride with a smartphone, and Tesla owners can use the Summon feature to park or retrieve their nearby vehicles from their phones without being inside them. 5/8 Ford Mustang Mach 1 – Diamonds Are Forever (1971) United Artists The majority of 1971’s Diamonds Are Forever takes place in and around Las Vegas, so it made sense that Bond would drive an American car. It was the age of muscle cars, and a bright red Ford Mustang Mach 1 fit the bill. In the vehicle’s most memorable scene, Sean Connery as Bond is trying to lose the police as he swerves through glittering downtown. At one point, he ramps the car onto two wheels to escape down a narrow alley, only to emerge on the other two wheels. The physics are puzzling, but the car’s power is unmistakable, and it wouldn’t be the last time Bond pulled a stunt to escape. 4/8 AMC Hornet – The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) United Artists When one thinks of cool cars, the AMC Hornet probably doesn’t come to mind. Decades after its glory days as the Fabulous Hudson Hornet, the version Roger Moore drives in The Man with the Golden Gun in 1974 is notable because it pulled off perhaps the greatest single stunt in a franchise full of them. This was no CGI or miniature trick, though computers were used for the first time to model a spiral jump and prove it could be done. Then stunt driver Loren ‘Bumps’ Willert took a modified Hornet through a complete barrel-roll over a river in one take! Now known as the corkscrew jump, the ground-breaking stunt was so unbelievable that many thought it had to be a special effect, and the slide whistle sound effect didn’t help. 3/8 Aston Martin V8 – The Living Daylights (1987) Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Bond drove several different Aston Martins over the years, but for the sheer number of useful gadgets, it’s hard to beat the model from 1987’s The Living Daylights. On his inaugural outing, Timothy Dalton as Bond drove a modified Aston Martin V8, using elements of the convertible Volante model, but with a hardtop and Vantage upgrades and badges. Among the devices Dalton deploys are a cutting laser, heat-seeking missiles controlled with a heads-up display; a jet engine booster, and retractable skis! More recently, the Aston Martin V8 showed up again when Daniel Craig took it out of storage for his final appearance as Bond in No Time To Die. 2/8 Lotus Esprit S1 – The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) United Artists Outside of his Aston Martin, the car most associated with James Bond has to be the Lotus Esprit S1 from The Spy Who Loved Me in 1977. It basically had one trick, but it was a memorable one, transforming into a submarine after diving off a pier. Fans might be surprised to learn that a full-sized model was built and filmed underwater in the Bahamas! Unfortunately, it wasn’t watertight, so the “driver” was actually a diver in scuba gear. The car proved so popular that a Lotus Esprit Turbo was used again in 1981’s For Your Eyes Only, this time with copper metallic paint, so it contrasted with the snowy scene in which it appeared. 1/8 Aston Martin DB5 – Goldfinger (1964) United Artists The Aston Martin DB5 is unquestionably James Bond’s car. No other car is so closely connected with the character, and three different Bond actors have driven it. First appearing in Goldfinger in 1964, Sean Connery can’t believe the modifications Desmond Llewelyn as Q has made: “Ejector seat? You’re joking!” Bond unsurprisingly crashes it, but after being recovered, Connery would drive it once more in 1965’s Thunderball. It’s easy to forget that 30 years passed before audiences saw it again, this time with Pierce Brosnan behind the wheel in GoldenEye in 1995, and then again briefly in Tomorrow Never Dies in 1997. Next, Daniel Craig as a rebooted Bond wins the car in a poker game in 2006’s Casino Royale, only to see it completely destroyed at the end of SkyFall in 2012. But you can’t keep a good car down, so the new Q, played by Ben Whishaw, restores it yet again in time for Bond to drive away in 2015’s Spectre. And that leads to its most recent appearance in the action-packed extended opening of No Time To Die in 2021. Only time will tell if we see it again, but as its many appearances prove, the Aston Martin DB5 is surely the coolest car from the James Bond franchise.

Regulators Need Power To Take Down Foreign Crypto Sites, IOSCO Says – CoinDesk https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/regulators-need-power-to-take-down-foreign-crypto-sites-iosco-says-coindesk/ Jack Schickler is a CoinDesk reporter focused on crypto regulations, based in Brussels, Belgium. He doesn’t own any crypto. Securities regulators should have the power to demand foreign crypto sites be taken down, the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) said in a Wednesday report. The proposals from the standard-setter are the latest in a series of crypto crackdowns based on worries over money laundering, tax evasion, financial stability, and the rise in financial advice dished out by novel sources like social media influencers. Apps use techniques taken from mobile games to trick people into buying inappropriate financial products, and financial influencers, also known as finfluencers, offer investment advice without the correct license, IOSCO also warned. Reality TV star Kim Kardashian recently paid $1.26 million to settle U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission charges that she hyped the EthereumMax token on Instagram without the appropriate disclosures. Financial services are going online and rules need to adapt, the report said. The Madrid-based organization, whose members include the U.S. SEC and counterparts from across the world, said crypto can be particularly opaque and volatile. “Digital fraudsters can hide behind a ‘digital veil’ that makes it difficult for regulators to locate, identify and take action against them,” said IOSCO Secretary General Martin Moloney in a statement published alongside the guidance. Crypto products can bamboozle or scam investors while escaping regulations that apply to conventional finance products like stocks, the report said. Yet IOSCO thinks it has found a way to get around the problem of international crypto marketing, where sales targeted in a country like the U.S. might actually originate from a completely different country. “New collaboration mechanisms may be developed to help ensure that the home regulator of wrongdoers undertake actions to stop online illegal activities (including crypto-asset related misconduct) upon request of the foreign regulator that has ascertained a violation,” the report said. That could mean, say, the SEC asking a foreign authority to shut down or block access to illegal websites or social media pages, to cease trades, or to recover fines imposed on an overseas crypto site, the report added. IOSCO’s call comes in the same week as the Financial Stability Board, another international standard setter, called for a comprehensive international crypto rulebook, limiting crypto companies’ ability to escape regulation by picking the easiest jurisdiction. A new IOSCO Fintech Working Group is also looking at crypto and decentralized finance in more detail. Technological Innovation In Lisbon And Portugal The Portugal News
Technological Innovation In Lisbon And Portugal – The Portugal News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/technological-innovation-in-lisbon-and-portugal-the-portugal-news/ Lisbon and the country of Portugal as a whole have become one of Europe’s biggest hubs in terms of tech companies and technological innovation. Some have made comparisons between Lisbon and Silicon Valley in California, USA. While there are some major differences between the two places, Lisbon is quickly becoming one of Europe’s major tech hubs. With such a vibrant and diverse startup scene, the city has become home to a growing number of talented people who are helping to shape the future. Why is Lisbon’s Tech Scene Booming? Lisbon’s tech scene really started to take off in 2016 when Web Summit moved from Dublin to Lisbon. The annual technology conference showcases some of the brightest minds in the industry and offers a place for people to learn more about the latest trends. While the decision to move from Dublin to Lisbon was originally a surprise to some, it showed that Lisbon is a city with a lot to offer. Tech startups were already commonplace in the city, but Web Summit helped bring more attention to Lisbon and Portugal as potential locations for growing businesses. Since then, many investors and business owners have been drawn to Lisbon, with the ideal climate, comparatively low cost of living and relaxed culture adding more reasons to set up here. In addition to this, English is a commonly spoken language, and there’s a wealth of talent already available to hire from. Many large corporations, including those in the fintech industry, have recently moved their offices to Portugal either completely or partially. Leading Portuguese fintech firms offer both innovative payment methods and online payment possibilities. One major example of this is Revolut, which launched a consumer operation in Lisbon in December 2021. More than 500,000 people in Portugal now use this banking service, and it shows the potential for Lisbon-based companies. Startup Support in Portugal Aside from being a very welcoming place to visit, Portugal also encourages entrepreneurship with a number of funds and startup support schemes. These initiatives have been set up to help develop the tech industry in Lisbon and Portugal, leading to greater job creation and a better economy. A 200 million euro fund was established by the Portuguese government in 2018 as an early-stage co-investment fund with venture capital funds. Another initiative for entrepreneurs is Startup Lisboa, which was established in 2011 by Bank Montepio, IAPMEI (the Portuguese Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation), and the city of Lisbon. Businesses wishing to launch in Lisbon can get assistance from Startup Lisboa. The government also simplifies the taxes process for international investors. For instance, the non-habitual tax residency programme enables individuals who work in important businesses, such as the technology sector, to pay a flat tax rate of 20%. Additionally, those businesses are now excluded from paying taxes on their foreign-sourced income. Early-stage investments from angel investors and private capital funds are increasing as well. For instance, Portugal Ventures has made investments totalling €162 million since 2012. There is also Faber Ventures, which helps early-stage firms and tries to give entrepreneurs both financial support and operational and entrepreneurial expertise. The Next Stage of Tech in Lisbon With such a booming tech scene, Portugal could be home to some of Europe’s most exciting new tech companies in the next few years. Already, the country has seen the creation of several unicorn firms, whose valuation surpasses €1 billion. The world’s first market-leading, low-code software development system, OutSystems, was established in Lisbon in 2011 and was recently valued at $9.5 billion. Companies such as Might are helping Lisbon-based startups grow and expand their reach online using email and online marketing automation techniques. As the tech scene continues to develop, it offers new opportunities for other businesses based in Portugal and all over Europe.
