UTSA Sees Fall Enrollment Holding Strong, Growth In Student Success – UTSA https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/utsa-sees-fall-enrollment-holding-strong-growth-in-student-success-utsa/ Wednesday, October 19, 2022 OCTOBER 19, 2022 — Enrollment at The University of Texas at San Antonio is holding strong with more than 34,300 students taking classes at the university this fall, according to preliminary data from the Office of Institutional Research and Analysis. Overall, enrollment is up 5% from pre-pandemic figures, when 32,594 students were enrolled in fall 2019. First-time freshman enrollment also increased 1.8% to a record 5,600, as more college-bound students choose UTSA to pursue their bold futures. “UTSA has been successful in maintaining our enrollment gains during the pandemic thanks to strategic planning and a deliberate focus on increasing financial aid,” said Kimberly Andrews Espy, UTSA provost and senior vice president of academic affairs.  Of particular note is a 41% surge in online enrollment from fall 2021. The university now has nearly 790 students enrolled in seven fully online degree and certificate programs. Eighty-five percent of online students are undergraduates.  Other highlights:  Seventy percent of students are from racial/ethnic groups underrepresented in higher education. Fifty-nine percent of UTSA students are Hispanic. The UTSA Carlos Alvarez College of Business (ACOB) is now UTSA’s largest academic college with 7,574 students, or 22% of all students. The ACOB surpassed the College for Health, Community and Policy (HCAP), now the university’s second-largest college, with 6,422 students, reflecting 19% of overall enrollment. The College of Sciences (COS) remains UTSA’s third-largest college, with 5,828 students or 17% of all students. Exactly half of UTSA students hail from Bexar County; another 45% come from other Texas counties. More than 1,170 students are entering UTSA as part of the university’s Bold Promise Program, the largest cohort to date. Raising the Bold Promise family income eligibility threshold to $70,000, made possible by UT System’s Promise Plus endowment, enabled more students to enroll through the Bold Promise Program. Additionally, UTSA is injecting an additional $2 million per year into financial aid from an endowment created from a $40 million gift to the university by philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. Nearly 77% of new Bold Promise students are Hispanic, and 39.8% are from Bexar County, reflecting the university’s commitment as an urban serving institution that provides high-quality, affordable education to students from the greater San Antonio community.  More Bold Promise students are taking advantage of all UTSA has to offer by living on campus, as well. More than 46% of new Bold Promise students are living in on-campus housing, up from 22% in fall 2020. The increase is due in part to the university’s new Bold Scholar program, a comprehensive on-campus living-learning experience that is providing housing scholarships to 220 students. The university’s transfer student enrollment is 2,900 this fall, down from fall 2021 and consistent with declines in transfer student enrollment across the country following the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to these enrollment figures, UTSA posted notable progress in several key student success metrics.  First-year retention from fall 2021 to fall 2022 is 80%, a nationally recognized benchmark. The university awarded 7,320 undergraduate and graduate degrees in 2021-2022. Sixty-six percent of bachelor’s degrees were awarded to students who identify as an underrepresented minority; 58% were awarded to Hispanic students. In the last five years, degrees awarded has grown by 16% overall. Five-year growth in undergraduate degrees is 18%, from 4,938 in 2017-2018 to 5,834 in 2021-2022. Graduate degree production grew by 9% in the same time period, from 1,369 to 1,486. Magical Vacation Planner Racing: Chase Briscoe Homestead Advance Speedway Digest
Magical Vacation Planner Racing: Chase Briscoe Homestead Advance – Speedway Digest https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/magical-vacation-planner-racing-chase-briscoe-homestead-advance-speedway-digest/ ● Chase Briscoe, driver of the No. 14 Magical Vacation Planner (MVP) Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), earned his fourth straight top-10 finish last Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The 400-mile event kicked off the Round of 8 in the NASCAR Playoffs, the final, three-race round before the Championship 4 field is set. Briscoe qualified 16th and was battling for the lead during the final 23 laps before taking the checkered flag fourth. Since advancing into the Round of 12 following the Sept. 17 race at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, Briscoe has been on a tear, finishing fifth Sept. 25 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, 10th at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway on Oct. 2, and ninth on the Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway Roval on Oct. 9 before Sunday’s fourth-place run at Las Vegas. He heads to Sunday’s Dixie Vodka 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway sixth in the playoff standings, nine points below the top-four cutoff. ● There’s only one track on the NASCAR schedule where Briscoe has visited victory lane in both a truck and a car – the 1.5-mile Homestead oval. In 2017, when he was driving fulltime for Brad Keselowski Racing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, Briscoe arrived for that year’s finale at Homestead searching for a ride in 2018 as the team would be shutting its doors at season’s end. He finished 2017 on a high note at Homestead, leading four times for a race-high 81 laps en route to his first win in a NASCAR national series. The win elevated him to sixth in the Truck Series championship standings and earn him Rookie of the Year honors to go with his series Most Popular Driver award. ● The 25-year-old from Mitchell, Indiana, moved on to the Xfinity Series in a part-time capacity in 2018 before joining SHR fulltime in 2019. He totaled 11 victories in SHR’s No. 98 Ford Mustang in 2019 and 2020, and Homestead was the setting for one of his more remarkable weekends during the latter season. It was a Saturday-Sunday doubleheader in June, and he overcame a mountain of adversity in the Saturday race to score a solid seventh-place finish. He drove from nearly last in the 37-car field, having been forced to the pits before the green flag even waved for the 167-lap race after a piece of equipment fell off his racecar during the pace laps. It put Briscoe five laps down to start the event, but he drove through the field twice in the first 70 laps and used pit strategy to get back onto the lead lap for the seventh-place finish. When the No. 98 team returned to close out the doubleheader Sunday, Briscoe outdueled Brandon Jones in a two-lap dash to the finish to earn his third Xfinity Series win of 2020 by just .072 of a second. ● Magical Vacation Planner returns to the No. 14 Ford Mustang for its final race with Briscoe this season. MVP was founded by Jamie Ane Eubanks alongside her husband JJ, a former professional basketball player, as a storefront travel agency in 2006. Today, it is a company that provides one of the best vacation planning services in the industry. It operates through three branches: MVP Parks, MVP Cruising and MVP Getaways. The company provides its exclusive and personalized, stress-free planning service at no additional expense to its clients, making the extensive array of Disney options and add-ons easy to understand and navigate. MVP actively seeks savings for its clients, monitoring early-morning releases of discounted room or vacation packages while also scouring existing reservations for price drops to where it can modify an existing reservation at the newfound lower price. MVP will also plan a family’s itinerary, expertly navigating Disney’s Genie+ and Lighting Lane systems to maximize resort and park times by avoiding long lines while also securing those premium Disney dining experiences that include coveted character meetings. ● To celebrate Briscoe’s fans and expand on MVP’s mission of helping others experience the magic and create lifelong memories, MVP is giving three lucky fans the opportunity to win a Walt Disney World ® Vacation Package. Fans can enter for a four-day, three-night Walt Disney World ® Vacation Package for up to four guests by visiting MagicalVacationPlanner.com/ChaseBriscoe. Chase Briscoe, Driver of the No. 14 Magical Vacation Planner Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing: You’re in the thick of your most consistent stretch of the season and it’s coming at the right time. Can you add to that this weekend at Homestead? “Homestead is a place I definitely know how to get around, but I feel like we’re going to have to be better. I don’t think we expected the tires to get so worn out at Las Vegas and to be slipping and sliding around as much as we were. It gets a little concerning because Las Vegas has way more grip than Homestead does, so we’ll have to work on some things, but I think there’s a lot we’ve probably learned from last weekend that we can apply. We were really good at the test a few weeks ago at Homestead. I was happy with what we learned, so we’ve just got to go down there and see where we stack up. The thing about testing is you can be really good but show up for the race and nothing works the way you planned. So, hopefully we’ll be good this weekend and can have a car that we can be really racey with and come out in a good place in points.” You finished top-10 at Martinsville earlier this year, so does that take some of the pressure off of having to finish well at Homestead? “No, not really. You still can’t have a bad weekend. I mean, you look at Las Vegas and we were awful to start the race, didn’t earn any stage points and then come back to fight for the win and finish fourth. But, we’re still nine points out. Every point matters. We can’t afford to not have those points. It helps to know we ran well at Martinsville, but that’s a track with a lot of chaos, so you don’t want to put all your hope on that track where you ran well six or seven months ago. We’ve really got to go race by race and make the best out of what we’ve got each week.” TSC PR

Obesity Rises Over 12% In School Students Muscat Daily
Obesity Rises Over 12% In School Students Muscat Daily
Obesity Rises Over 12% In School Students – Muscat Daily https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/obesity-rises-over-12-in-school-students-muscat-daily/ Muscat – To curb obesity among school students, the Ministry of Education, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, launched an initiative called ‘Ideal Weight Challenge’ on Tuesday. Dr Sulaiman al Shereiqi, senior specialist of public health in the Ministry of Health (MoH) and head of the technical team of ‘Ideal Weight Challenge’, informed that its pilot programme is being run in 12 schools in the Governorate of Muscat, targeting 200 students of Grades 2 and 3. The programme is optional, requiring the approval of a participating student’s father. It will run for four years to eventually include all schools in the sultanate. “The programme includes four axes – healthy and balanced nutrition, promoting physical activity and a healthy lifestyle, sleeping enough hours, and enhancing the psychological aspect of healthy living. It will be implemented in school and at home, and involve physical activities and an introductory meeting with students’ parents to implement the programme highlighting the importance of eating breakfast and healthy meals,” Dr Shereiqi said. The programme aims to diagnose obesity cases in a scientific way, reduce obesity among school students and spread awareness of the dangers of obesity-related health conditions, in addition to conducting important health tests to detect the presence of diabetes and anaemia among school students. “The latest official statistics indicate a rise in obesity among students aged five to nine years – an increase of up to 15 per cent among boys and 12 per cent among girls.” According to Dr Shereiqi, finding enough time to implement the programme in schools and nursing cadres was one of the biggest challenges. “But in cooperation with the schools, we created the necessary time and MoH also delegated nursing cadres for the programme. We recently held workshops to implement it.” Participants discussed all aspects of providing services for managing obesity in targeted schools, besides setting realistic targets for implementation of the programme. Dr Shereiqi described obesity as an outcome of several risk factors, including those that are in individual’s control and others that are not. “Genetic inheritance is one factor that is beyond our control. On the other hand, lack or insufficient physical activity, unhealthy diet, stress, binge-eating, and lack of basic nutritional knowledge are factors in our control,” Dr Shereiqi said. Obesity in itself, he noted, is a disease and a sign of malnutrition linked to several chronic conditions. “These include diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal blood fat (dyslipidemia), osteoarthritis and certain types of cancers. Being aware of these will alert people to seek medical help. By doing so, they can help themselves regain their optimum health and reduce risk of premature death.” The programme also includes a competition among students and schools for losing weight, with prizes for schools that succeed in implementing it, the top ten schools that lose weight collectively and the top weight loser among students. “Preventing obesity in communities requires the efforts of all stakeholders,” Dr Shereiqi said. In 2017, the National Non-communicable Disease Survey reported that 66 per cent of the population in Oman is overweight and obese. The prevalence of obesity in the sultanate has increased to 23.2 per cent among men and 39.3 per cent among women.

NBA DFS: Top DraftKings FanDuel Daily Fantasy Basketball Picks Stacks For Oct. 19 2022 Include Nikola Jokic CBS Sports
NBA DFS: Top DraftKings, FanDuel Daily Fantasy Basketball Picks, Stacks For Oct. 19, 2022 Include Nikola Jokic – CBS Sports https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/nba-dfs-top-draftkings-fanduel-daily-fantasy-basketball-picks-stacks-for-oct-19-2022-include-nikola-jokic-cbs-sports/ The 2022-23 NBA season is underway and 24 of the league’s 30 teams will begin their campaign on Wednesday night. Pelicans star Zion Williamson will return to action after missing the entirety of the 2021-22 season and the Pelicans are hoping to make a huge push after giving the top-seeded Suns a scare in the first round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs. Plenty of NBA daily Fantasy players will have trepidations about playing Williamson in his first game back but he averaged 27.0 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 2020-21. Should you have Williamson in your NBA DFS lineups on Wednesday night as he takes on Kevin Durant and the Nets in his first game back? Or are there safer options in the NBA DFS player pool that you should be exploring? Before making any NBA DFS picks for Wednesday, be sure to check out the NBA DFS advice, player rankings, stacks and top daily Fantasy basketball picks from SportsLine’s Mike McClure. McClure is a DFS professional with over $2 million in career winnings. He’s also a predictive data engineer at SportsLine who uses a powerful prediction model that simulates every minute of every game 10,000 times, taking factors like matchups, statistical trends and injuries into account. This allows him to find the best NBA DFS values and create optimal lineups that he shares only over at SportsLine. They’re a must-see for any NBA DFS player. On Tuesday, he highlighted Lakers forward LeBron James as one of his top NBA DFS picks on both DraftKings and FanDuel. The result: James produced 31 points, 14 rebounds and 8 assists to return 61 points on DraftKings and 54.8 points on FanDuel. Anybody that included him in their lineups was well on the way to a profitable day.   Now, McClure has turned his attention to NBA action on Wednesday and locked in his top daily Fantasy basketball picks. You can only see them by heading to SportsLine. Top NBA DFS picks for Wednesday, October 19 For Wednesday, one of McClure’s top NBA DFS picks is Nuggets center Nikola Jokic, who is listed at $10,300 on DraftKings and $11,600 on FanDuel. Jokic has been the NBA MVP in each of the last two seasons and he’ll kick off his quest for a three-peat against the Jazz on Wednesday night after the squad dismantled their roster and traded away Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert. Jokic shot a career-best 58.3% from the floor in 2021-22 and averaged 27.1 points, 13.8 rebounds, 7.9 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.9 blocks per game. He’s produced an absurd 70 triple-doubles in the last five seasons including a career-high 19 last season. Now he’ll take on a Jazz defense without Gobert to protect the rim. Lock him in your NBA DFS lineups and look for a big return against Utah. Another part of McClure’s optimal NBA DFS strategy includes rostering Pistons guard Cade Cunningham ($7,000 on DraftKings, $7,900 on FanDuel). The No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft averaged 17.4 points, 5.6 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game in his rookie season. But the Pistons have to be encouraged by the growth they saw overall, as Cunningham averaged 21.1 points, 6.5 assists and 5.7 rebounds in the second half while shooting 45.7% from the floor. Now he’ll look to lead a resurgent Pistons roster that has added a pair of first-round picks (Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren) along with free-agency additions Kemba Walker and Marvin Bagley III. How to set your NBA DFS lineups for Wednesday, October 19 McClure is also targeting a player who could go off for massive numbers on Wednesday because of a dream matchup. This pick could be the difference between winning your tournaments and cash games or going home with nothing. You can only see who it is here. Who is DFS pro Mike McClure putting in his optimal NBA DFS lineups for Wednesday? Visit SportsLine now to see optimal NBA DFS picks, rankings, advice, and stacks, all from a professional DFS player who has almost $2 million in career winnings, and find out.

TIP Tackles Metaverse Network Needs – Mobile World Live https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/tip-tackles-metaverse-network-needs-mobile-world-live/ 19 OCT 2022 The Telecom Infra Project (TIP) moved to ensure networks will be capable of living up to the promise of the metaverse, forming a working group comprised of representatives from Telefonica, T-Mobile US and Telecom Italia’s wholesale unit Sparkle, among others, to focus on the connectivity element. TIP stated the Metaverse-Ready Networks Project Group will focus on delivering network architectures capable of delivering metaverse experiences. It named the operators’ representatives along with those from Microsoft and Meta Platforms as the first co-chairs of the group, with the first meeting to convene during the organisation’s Fyuz event taking place in Madrid from 25 October to 27 October. The metaverse group will be tasked with developing “industry-wide network capabilities, specific APIs and mechanisms” needed to offer end-to-end connectivity for “immersive applications”, TIP stated. TIP explained the performance of networks will become increasingly important as metaverse services are developed in fields including education, healthcare and remote working. “As they evolve over the next decade, future immersive services will require more network capabilities to support greater agility, programmability, performance and reliability”, TIP added. Ron Marquardt, T-Mobile VP of advanced technologies and innovation, argued the metaverse could only be achieved “through industry collaboration”. He said the working group will encourage other communication service providers, “technology makers and content creators” to join. Telefonica head of network platforms Alexandre Harmand cited access to work on open RAN, optical and packet transport infrastructure by other TIP working groups as a key benefit. The Jason Sudeikis Olivia Wilde Nanny Drama Role Reversal Romper
The Jason Sudeikis Olivia Wilde Nanny Drama Role Reversal Romper
The Jason Sudeikis Olivia Wilde Nanny Drama Role Reversal – Romper https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/the-jason-sudeikis-olivia-wilde-nanny-drama-role-reversal-romper/ Salad dressing is having a moment. The innocuous condiment has shockingly taken center stage in the Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis nanny scandal. Among many sordid details revealed in an interview the nanny gave to the Daily Mail, it seems that Wilde dared to make her special salad dressing for her hot pop star boyfriend, thereby allegedly pushing Sudeikis right over the ex-fiancé edge. And while dressing-gate has launch a smorgasbord of memes, there’s another angle to this gossipy saga that most have missed. The delicious twist we didn’t expect is that we’re finally seeing a jilted man take over the undesired title of being the overly dramatic and “hysterical” one. For months now, Wilde and Sudeikis have weathered the headlines dissecting the minutia of their unfortunate split. Sudeikis serving custody papers to the mother of his children in public, while she was on stage at a Film Festival promoting her latest movie may be all the evidence needed to be squarely Team Olivia. But even the now acrimonious former couple took a break from their bitterness to issue a joint statement calling their former nanny’s claims “false” and “scurrilous.” And what exactly were these claims? #1. The run-me-over ultimatum. There is truly nothing that could be more dramatic than flinging yourself under the running car of your exiting-paramour in a forlorn attempt to make her stay put. And that’s exactly what the nanny claims Sudeikis did when Wilde made a dash for the door to fly off to meet her dreamy British boyfriend Harry Styles. Not since every single undignified rose ceremony in every single episode of The Bachelor has there been such a desperate (and dangerous) attempt to make an ex reconsider saying sayonara. #2. The suspicious Apple watch. Women are more often portrayed as the phone-snoopers and password-breakers, trying by any means necessary to get into their man’s DMs or text messages to see if he’s in fact straying. (Kim Kardashian once played amateur hacker, breaking into the voicemail of one of Khloé’s cheating boyfriends.) The nanny alleges Sudeikis discovered Wilde’s relationship with Styles via messages on an Apple watch. Did Wilde in fact leave said watch behind, or was Sudeikis going all Geek Squad on his fiancé’s gadgets to catch her in the act by any means necessary? #3. Hashtagged texts infused with delusional optimism. One of the receipts produced in the Daily Mail expose is a supposed text that Sudeikis sent to the nanny on Jan. 17, 2021 at 3:59 p.m. smack-dab in the middle of his crumbling relationship. “You are a good person. With an amazing heart. Please don’t think for a second you will be ‘punished’ for any of this. Love will win. #believe.” Not only did this text prove to be untrue, as the nanny says she got sacked, but it’s hard to believe that Sudeikis was physically capable of the cheesiness required to type out #believe, the aphorism coined by his almost offensively upbeat creation, Ted Lasso. The SNL alum also allegedly replayed Wilde’s voicemails for the nanny to listen to and dissect, a classic vengeful middle school move. #4. Copious amounts of man tears. The nanny also claimed that Sudeikis cried. Like, a whole lot of “out of control crying.” And while there is of course absolutely nothing wrong with showing feelings via healthy waterworks after the end of a meaningful relationship, it’s refreshing to see that all this unadulterated emotion was in fact shown by a man. #5. The ban on fantastic music. Not since the movie Footloose has an edict against music been so devastating. According to the nanny, when Sudeikis learned of his leading lady’s betrayal, he immediately prohibited the playing of Harry Styles’ discography in his home. Infidelity aside, it’s pretty cruel for Sudeikis to ban amazing music, especially in a year dominated by Styles’ boppy new album. The tables, they have turned. But beyond the characterization of Sudeikis as histrionic, let’s also take note of Wilde in her unflappable glory. Through it all, the single mom remained cool as a cucumber, thoroughly enjoying her Hot Mom Summer. (Remember 2021? She may have literally been the only one.) The director never seemed all that interested in conventional relationships (as evidenced by the fact that after seven years, she never married her fiancé in the first place), and she keeps flipping the gender roles in the Hollywood break-up script. She took a move right from the playbook of many so-called male players who wrap up one relationship and immediately engage in another with a much younger partner. And if you believe the fired nanny, Wilde’s also the one who made the first move to smooch Harry Styles. But while Wilde has had to face the blatant sexism and double standards in media coverage, until now, the beloved Ted Lasso star has escaped mostly unscathed. And though it’s never cool to revel in anyone’s heartbreak and take too much pleasure in revelations about what was clearly a toxic workplace, I must admit to some Sudeikis-induced smugness. Is it a little gratifying to see a dumped man depicted as the pathetic, crazy ex-boyfriend for once? You bet your balsamic it is.

Hacker Steals $8.4 Million From Moola Market DeFi Protocol – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/hacker-steals-8-4-million-from-moola-market-defi-protocol-cryptonews/ As cybercrime continues to be an important subject in the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector, the latest incident sees Moola Market being exploited for over $8.4 million. In a surprising turn of events, the majority of these funds were later returned. “First off, we’re buoyed by the fact that the majority of funds were recovered. This is good news for all users and means that the impact will be limited,” Moola Market tweeted following the attack on the protocol.  “Following today’s incident, 93.1% of funds have been returned to the Moola governance multi-sig. We have continued to pause all activity on Moola and will follow up with the community about the next steps, and to safely restart operations of the Moola protocol,” according to the protocol.  Igor Igamberdiev, Research Director at The Block, tweeted that, under the “incredibly simple attack”, the “exploiter was funded with 243k CELO” from major exchange Binance, which allowed them to access some $8.4 million worth of crypto.  “The attacker lent 60k CELO to Moola and borrowed 1.8M MOO to use them as collateral” after which they “started pumping the MOO price with the remaining CELO, and to use it as collateral and borrow all other tokens,” he said.  A report released earlier this year by blockchain analysis company Chainalysis stated that some forms of cryptocurrency-based crime, including hacking and theft of funds, have increased in occurrence this year. The firm believes that much of this can be attributed to the rapid rise in funds stolen from DeFi protocols, a trend that started last year. “Through July 2022, $1.9 billion worth of cryptocurrency has been stolen in hacks of services, compared to just under $1.2 billion at the same point in 2021,” the firm’s report said. Following a string of major attacks, last August, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also said it was taking steps to warn investors and platforms about cybercrime risks. The law enforcement agency said it was also recommending a set of precautions that could prevent DeFi market participants from losing their assets to criminals.   “Cyber criminals are increasingly exploiting vulnerabilities in the smart contracts governing DeFi platforms to steal cryptocurrency, causing investors to lose money,” the agency said in a statement. “Cyber criminals seek to take advantage of investors’ increased interest in cryptocurrencies, as well as the complexity of cross-chain functionality and open source nature of DeFi platforms.

Common Read Experience Hosts Critically Acclaimed Author | Binghamton News – Binghamton https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/common-read-experience-hosts-critically-acclaimed-author-binghamton-news-binghamton/ The Common Read Experience, a program for first-year students designed to foster intellectual conversations and academia relationships, has evolved from a fall semester series into a year-long experience to enhance students’ exposure to vital societal topics. This includes bringing in speakers such as critically acclaimed author Safiya Noble. During the talk, Noble, an internet studies scholar and author of Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism, explored how digital media overlaps with racial, gender, cultural and technological issues. During a critical time where technology dominates society, Noble provided extensive insight on the ways that people are affected by the platforms they use daily. This year, Common Read Experience organizers chose Kathy O’Neil’s book Weapons of Math Destruction because it explores how algorithms bolster pre-existing inequalities, a similar theme to that of Noble’s book. Noble explained how search engine results spread false information by reinforcing racist and sexist stereotypes. For example, during a 2011 Google search of “Black girls,” the results included mainly pornographic and hypersexualized content. Noble argued that technology companies need to be held accountable for their algorithms that target marginalized groups and influence people’s perception of the world around them. “I think this journey of studying the tech sector makes me realize that it will be harder than ever to create more fair societies because many of the technologies are ‘making life good,’ as Kathy O’Neil writes in her book,” said Noble. “They’re making life better for people who already have good lives and worse for people whose lives are already hard. What I’m trying to do with my work is uncover how that’s happening and try to intervene upon it.” Noble spoke to a packed house of students who were a part of the Common Read program and other students who were impressed with her work. “The fact that Noble brought in different aspects about how technology is impacting society, especially with search engines, was absolutely fascinating,” said Marco McClain, a sophomore majoring in sociology. “I knew that these things were racialized, but I didn’t know the extent to which they’ve been racialized. I think that it’s really important that these ideas are seen more and it made a huge impact on me.” “The way in which Noble detailed how algorithms reinforce systemic racism was eye-opening and thought-provoking, and complemented this year’s Common Read Experience book,” said Kelli Smith, Common Read Experience committee member and assistant vice president for student success. “I’ll never look at a Google search in the same way and she inspired action for change.” Noble said that people in every field must contend with algorithms, artificial intelligence and other predictive technologies and that she was happy to be at Binghamton University to broaden the conversation about the harms that come from them. “The Common Read Experience began as a way to help students gain perspectives and engage in a dialogue on important social issues affecting the campus community and the nation at large,” said Sean Fenty, director of the Writing Initiative. “It has continued to help students engage in such issues and build community by establishing a common basis from which to discuss these issues, and by offering activities and events to help encourage that dialogue and build that community.” Noble’s talk is only one of the events that the Common Read committee organized to encourage intellectual development and differing viewpoints. “This past year, not only did the campus provide an opportunity for students to connect with their collegiate professors and other faculty to support engagement when they arrived, we provided additional programming efforts, including a movie screening of The Social Dilemma, followed by a discussion, and brought our keynote speaker, Noble, to campus,” said Peter Nardone, committee member and director of The Union. “What has been most rewarding is seeing not only students, but also faculty and staff participate in the entire experience of the Common Read, bringing the campus community together on an important topic.” The Common Read Experience continues with The Annual Public Debates and Deliberation Challenge scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, in the UU-Mandela Room, when students will dispute prominent issues related to this year’s book, Weapons of Math Destruction. You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know | Business News – St. Louis American https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/you-dont-know-what-you-dont-know-business-news-st-louis-american/ Delta continued to elevate the conversation on equity by convening a panel of our partners during the recent 51st Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. in Washington, D.C. The first time Delta has participated in this esteemed gathering of policy experts, community leaders and Members of Congress, the panel featured leaders from Goal Setter, OneTen, Responsible Business Initiative for Justice (RBIJ) and the Organization of Black Aviation Professionals (OBAP). “It was a uniquely intentional conversation with partners we are working with to disrupt inequitable systems,” said Ashley Black, Managing Director of Equity Strategies in the Office of Global Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. “We were honored to host this conversation with an audience of influential and action-focused conference attendees to invite them to join us, and each of our partners, in this work to connect people to equitable outcomes.” Delta’s “Equity is the Motive: Corporate Partnerships Driving Outcomes with Impact” panel featured: Justin Biassou, Board of Directors – Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals, Ashley Black, Managing Director of Equity Strategies – Delta Air Lines, Ashley Furst, Senior Program Manager – Responsible Business Initiative for Justice, Maurice Jones, CEO – OneTen, Tanya Van Court, CEO – Goal Setter. Delta is actively engaged with each organization to accelerate measurable change in the way they do business — from reimagining their talent strategies and hiring practices to inspiring the next generation of aviation professionals — and they are influencing other corporations and organizations to do the same.  Taylor Collins, Delta Board Council representative for Reservations and Customer Care and Eric Hendrick, Director, Pilot Outreach, Recruitment and Selection also participated in the conference engaging with key government and other stakeholders.   During Delta’s panel, Biassou put it simply that “without OBAP, and support from Delta, I wouldn’t be here.” A little over 20 years ago, Biassou participated in a “Dream Flight” with the ACE Academy in Atlanta where students with an interest in aviation flew Delta to Washington, D.C. to explore the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum. At the age of 12, his journey to the cockpit had begun. He earned his private pilot’s license at 17 going on to become a multi-engine instrument rated pilot. Now a Member of the Board of Directors for OBAP, he noted that “the mentorship, training and career mapping was simply not going to happen for me if not for OBAP and we have to keep changing that, expanding this industry, for more young people.” Tanya Van Court made her point about the critical need for financial literacy with a jaw-dropping recount of stock options she once received early in her career plummeting from close to $1 million in value to $20,000 within months, and the fact that she had no idea how or why that happened. “You don’t know what you don’t know,” she said about then realizing that even with her education and credentials, she was woefully ill-equipped to understand let alone harness financial opportunities beyond a salary. “I was determined to not let that be so for my children, and for so many other children growing up without access to the knowledge necessary to identify and overcome inequity that prevents building generational wealth.” Tanya, a former executive at Nickelodeon, went on to found Goal Setter, an education-based financial services app focused on a “whole family” approach to teaching saving and investment principles. Last year, Goal Setter launched “One Stock. One Future,” an initiative to invite Fortune 1000 companies to make one million Black and Hispanic and Latino youth shareholders. Delta provided 1,000 shares of stock last October. ALC is CBCF’s leading public policy meeting on issues impacting African Americans and the global black community. This year’s event returned to an in-person gathering, after being virtual for two years, in Washington, D.C., and featured more than 100 policy sessions and special events hosted by the CBCF, Members of Congress and sponsors. “Our inaugural sponsorship with the CBCF was an honor and we will continue to find the best forums to tell the Delta equity story through our partners,” said Cherie Wilson – Vice President, Government Affairs – Sustainability and chief organizer of the event.  “But to be clear, Delta is committed to more than conversation.  We are making tangible investments that drive outcomes with measurable impact on the workforce and within communities.  We want to do the real work.”

Aiming For Longevity – Harvard Health https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/aiming-for-longevity-harvard-health/ Living to 100 is more common than ever. How can you strive for this milestone? Helen Mongelia’s 102 years reflect the mysterious alchemy of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that coalesce to aid longevity. Fresh food, consistent movement, emotional resilience, and a family full of long-living relatives mark the centenarian’s colorful life span, which began in 1919 while Woodrow Wilson occupied the White House. Longevity like Mrs. Mongelia’s remains extraordinary, with an estimated one in 6,000 people in the United States reaching 100 nowadays, according to the U.S. Administration on Aging. More than 100,000 were 100 or older in 2019, triple the number in 1980 who’d passed their 100th birthday. FanDuel Barstool Approved For Ohio Sports Betting Gaming Today
FanDuel, Barstool Approved For Ohio Sports Betting – Gaming Today https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/fanduel-barstool-approved-for-ohio-sports-betting-gaming-today/ Two more mobile operators have been approved to offer sports betting in Ohio ahead of the Buckeye State’s universal launch on Jan. 1. That brings the total number of approved mobile sportsbook operators to seven so far. FanDuel and Barstool Sportsbook were approved as Ohio sports betting mobile operators by the Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) at a meeting today. FanDuel is partnered with Belterra Park racino in Cincinnati. Barstool is partnered with Hollywood Casino in Columbus. Both operators have also been approved as retail operators for their mobile partners. Additionally, Barstool has been approved to operate retail sportsbooks at Dayton Raceway and Hollywood casinos in Toledo and Youngstown, bringing the total number of approved Ohio retail sportsbook operators to nine.  Ohio approved its first five mobile sportsbook operators on Oct. 5. Those five operators were PointsBet, Caesars, Betfred, bet365, and SuperBook. It is uncertain how many more operators, or service providers, will be approved before launch. Sportsbook Approval Conditional On Meeting Upcoming Deadlines Approval of all sportsbooks and their facility partners is conditional. Potential licensees must submit their sports gaming employee applications, responsible gaming plans, facility plans, geolocation procedures, and house rules to the OCCC by Nov. 2 in order to launch on Jan. 1.  Missing the Nov. 2 deadline will push their launch date to later next year.  Additionally, all sports gaming facilities and sportsbooks must have their gaming equipment verified and ready to go no later than Dec. 2 if they hope to launch on New Year’s Day.  OCCC staff were among hundreds of participants at the G2E Conference last week in Las Vegas, where companies that will drive the Ohio sports betting market shared their latest ideas. Staying on track to meet the universal launch date was emphasized at today’s meeting by OCCC Chair June Taylor.  “We are essentially seven and a half weeks away from what we are calling ‘the launch,’” Taylor said to operators. “So we ask that you continue to work with our team and ask questions, and just be authentic in your quest to get your paperwork and everything complete. Because we are genuine in what we’re doing in responding to you morning, night, weekends, and working as best as we can.”  “The date is the date, the deadlines are the deadlines, and let’s continue to work hard to meet them and we’ll hope this operation is successful.”  Sports Betting Kiosks and Suppliers Also Approved Ahead of Jan. 1 Launch Sports betting kiosks will also go live in Ohio at the first of the year at hundreds of locations statewide, including supermarkets, restaurants, bars, and gas stations. The OCCC approved another 29 locations today.  That brings the total number of approved kiosk hosts, so far, to 877.  Before today, the OCCC had not approved any of the seven companies that will service the hundreds of sports betting kiosks around the state.  Four of those companies – Green Bear Gaming (UBet Ohio), Intralot, betIGG, and Skybox Sports Network – were finally granted approval this morning.  Several new sports gaming suppliers were also approved today by the OCCC, bringing the total number of approved suppliers to 15. The suppliers provide software and other equipment for wagering from start to finish. Suppliers approved today include IGT, SimpleBet, IMG Arena, Skybox Sports, and Aristotle.  Image by: viewimage

Protecting Data In The Metaverse: Do Avatars Dream Of Privacy? JD Supra
Protecting Data In The Metaverse: Do Avatars Dream Of Privacy? JD Supra
Protecting Data In The Metaverse: Do Avatars Dream Of Privacy? – JD Supra https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/protecting-data-in-the-metaverse-do-avatars-dream-of-privacy-jd-supra/ SUMMARY The metaverse will bring many benefits, but it is also likely to multiply and compound privacy issues, particularly given its global nature. With the advent of the commercial internet in the 1990s, organizations were increasingly able to track users’ clicks and searches to gather information about their preferences, interests, and purchasing habits. Mobile technology not only added precise location tracking, it also enabled the integration of smartphones into virtually every life activity, giving organizations deeper insights into users’ identities. The metaverse will take us much further down this path, enabling the tracking of human bodies and even thoughts, particularly as users develop deep relationships with digital avatars. Whether through virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) – which together are known as extended reality (XR) – the metaverse will increase the type and volume of data that organizations collect, as well as change how they process and share it across domains and borders. This will raise a host of privacy issues that we are only just beginning to appreciate. Types and Volume of Data In his recent book The Metaverse: And How it Will Revolutionize Everything, Matthew Ball defines the metaverse as: “A massively scaled and interoperable network of real-time rendered 3D virtual worlds that can be experienced synchronously and persistently by an effectively unlimited number of users with an individual sense of presence, and with continuity of data, such as identity, history, entitlements, objects, communications, and payments.” Much of the activity that takes place in this universe depends on XR technologies that enable 3D experiences. Researchers estimate that XR applications produce one terabyte of data per hour, which is equivalent to 200,000 songs stored in a digital playlist. To convincingly render a scene, VR headsets track a dozen different types of movements at a rate of 90 times per second.[1] Whereas online companies currently observe browsing and search histories, operators in the metaverse will track our bodies themselves. Immersive technologies monitor human physiology, including eyeball motion and point of gaze, facial expression, voice, and heart rate. They also observe a wide range of physical actions, including head and body movements, haptics, gait, and posture. And they can track emotions through expression recognition technologies and neural activity using brain-computer interfaces. Moreover, XR environments use audio, visual, and inertial sensors to detect the position of a user or device relative to its surroundings. This often involves collecting data about non-participants, passive bystanders who happen to be within range of a system’s sensors. Operators that track physiological, mental, and biometric data are subject to laws governing the collection, use, and sharing of sensitive data and biometrics. That includes the General Data Protection Regulation in Europe; state privacy regulations in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah and Virginia; and biometric privacy laws, such as Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act. When the metaverse is used in work, education, or healthcare contexts, operators collecting data of this sort will be subject to sector-specific privacy laws, such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. How Data is Processed Organizations will process data using machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence techniques to estimate or infer the identities, emotional states, and intentions of their users, as well as predict how they may behave in the future. Moreover, AIs and bots will actively participate in games as well as social media and other communication platforms, raising challenges related to trust. Deepfakes may raise particularly thorny issues. In recent years, several states have advanced laws on automated decision making, and policymakers in the US, EU, and China are debating the regulation of AI. Under these laws, metaverse operators and participants will be subject to new layers of rules, including standards, trust marks, certification frameworks, and auditing schemes. How Data is Shared Across Domains and Borders One of the defining characteristics of the metaverse – what makes it “meta” – is interoperability. To support an environment that is persistent, live, synchronous, and interoperable, organizations need standards and frameworks for data sharing across domains and platforms. As noted, many countries already have laws on data collection, use, and sharing, especially when it comes to personal data — and many new laws are being considered. But laws in different countries may conflict. And it can be very difficult or even impossible to determine which national laws apply when people come together from different locations around the world to interact in virtual environments. Like the Internet, the metaverse doesn’t “reside” in a specific jurisdiction. Which country’s laws take precedence, for example, when a person who is in Japan meets another person who is in Brazil to interact in a virtual café owned by a US company that uses servers located in India? The internet, which is a relatively static environment, already raises myriad questions on jurisdiction and choice of law. The metaverse – where avatars cruise in interconnected, always-on digital spaces without physical or logical boundaries – will multiply and compound them. Enter the Blockchain The hype surrounding the metaverse also relates to its technological relative, the blockchain. While conceptually separate, the metaverse and blockchain intersect where property issues arise. For example, avatars may dress up in skins that are tradeable as NFTs and portable across platforms and applications through users’ digital wallets. Moreover, Web3 champions support systems for decentralized “self-sovereign identity” in the metaverse, liberated from the control of major platforms and mediated by cryptology. The blockchain, of course, has its own privacy frictions. For starters, it is designed to maximize transparency and actions taken on the blockchain are immutable. Anyone can see the history of every transaction that has taken place on a blockchain dating back to the chain’s launch. And individuals cannot technically enforce their right to privacy by deleting personal data stored on chain or hiding it from public view. The metaverse presents exciting opportunities for reinvigorating online work, commerce, and play. At the same time, organizations designing products and services in this space will need to bake in laws and standards governing sensitive data and biometrics, AI and machine learning, cross platform data sharing, and blockchain applications. Whether through top-down government regulation or bottom-up privacy by design, the metaverse is an exciting new domain not just for gamers but also for lawyers and policymakers. Bitcoin Price Will Hit $100K In 2023; Stocks, Crypto To See ‘bull Market’ – Tone Vays – Kitco NEWS https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/bitcoin-price-will-hit-100k-in-2023-stocks-crypto-to-see-bull-market-tone-vays-kitco-news/ (Kitco News) – Bitcoin‘s price will reach $100,000 in 2023, and stocks and crypto will experience a “bull market” as European money flees to the United States, said Tone Vays, derivatives trader, crypto analyst, and conference organizer. “I would be surprised if we’re not approaching that $100,000 [Bitcoin price] some time next year,” he said. “I think that there will be a lot of speculative money flowing into the equities market and into crypto markets.” Vays claimed that “capital flows out of Europe” and into the United States could trigger Bitcoin‘s price increase. He also suggested that fear of missing out (FOMO) could motivate investors to purchase more Bitcoin. “They missed their chance catching the low in 2018,” he said. “This is one more chance… if [investors] ever get an opportunity to buy Bitcoin again under $10,000, they will jump at it immediately.” Vays spoke with Michelle Makori, Editor-in-Chief and Lead Anchor at Kitco News. Bitcoin: A Unique Asset Vays highlighted that Bitcoin cannot be confiscated and is “censorship resistant,” since the cryptocurrency is decentralized. He said that these unique attributes of Bitcoin would lead to more adoption. “I see Bitcoin as the only decentralized cryptocurrency,” he said. “It is censorship resistant, and you can send it to anyone, anywhere.” Vays pointed to recent examples of governments freezing or confiscating bank accounts for political reasons to argue that demand for Bitcoin will rise. “We’re witnessing governments, central banks and regular banks freeze bank accounts,” he claimed. “This year alone, we’ve witnessed the West and the United States… confiscate wealth because people had a Russian passport… prior to that, Trudeau and Canada froze people’s bank accounts for a $20 donation for a political contribution… you can’t do that with Bitcoin.” Bitcoin Price Support Although Vays is forecasting a $100K price of Bitcoin, he said that the cryptocurrency could bottom to a $14,000 “support level” before reversing and reaching new highs. However, he cautioned that Bitcoin’s unpredictability makes determining a definite price support difficult. “Because Bitcoin is so illiquid, it is a lot more difficult to identify a true support level,” he said. “There are no circuit breakers like we have in traditional markets, so whenever Bitcoin crashes, it tends to become very unpredictable… but I am looking at that $14,000 level.” He added that he is “holding a cash position,” so that if Bitcoin drops to $14,000, he will buy more in anticipation of future gains. Oil Up In Tight Market As U.S. Sets Release Of More Reserves – Reuters https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/oil-up-in-tight-market-as-u-s-sets-release-of-more-reserves-reuters/ U.S. crude stocks down 1.7 mln barrels last week – EIA U.S. expected to sell 15 million barrels from oil reserves Coming Up: Biden to speak at 1:15 p.m. EDT (1715 GMT) NEW YORK, Oct 19 (Reuters) – Oil prices rose on Wednesday as caution over tightening supply countered the negative impact of uncertain Chinese demand growth and news that the United States will release more crude from its reserves. Brent crude futures for December settlement were up $1.54, or 1.6%, to $91.56 a barrel by 12:47 p.m. EDT (1647 GMT). U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude (WTI) In the previous session, the benchmarks hit a two-week low on reports that U.S. President Joe Biden plans to release 15 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). Biden is set to speak at 1:15 p.m. EDT (1715 GMT) on efforts to lower fuel costs in the United States, which have dropped over the last two weeks but remain higher than a month ago. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com U.S. crude inventories fell unexpectedly last week – down 1.7 million barrels, weekly government showed, against expectations for a build of 1.4 million barrels. SPR levels fell 3.6 million barrels to just over 405 million, the lowest since May 1984. Meanwhile, U.S. refiners were still operating at higher rates than usual for this time of year, running at 89.5% of capacity. “Oil is taking it as a positive as we got a surprise drawdown even with another SPR release,” said Phil Flynn, senior analyst at Price Futures Group in Chicago. “Refinery runs came in stronger than anticipated. Supplies are still dangerously tight which should give us some support.” A pending European Union ban on Russian crude and oil products and the output cut from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and other producers including Russia, a group known as OPEC+, of 2 million barrels per day also supported prices. The EU’s sanctions on Russian crude takes effect in December, and sanctions on oil products will take effect in February. “Prices need to rise above $100 a barrel in the coming months to slow demand growth and restore the supply-demand balance, in our view, given that oil inventories stand at a multi-year low,” said UBS analysts in a note. China this week postponed the release of some key economic data, a highly unusual move that stoked fears of weak growth. There were also some signs of resurgent Chinese oil demand, including private mega refiner Zhejiang Petrochemical Corp (ZPC) and state-run ChemChina receiving further import quotas. Use Of Appropriate Technology Fueling Optimism In Villages: Ministry – ANTARA English https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/use-of-appropriate-technology-fueling-optimism-in-villages-ministry-antara-english/ Cirebon (ANTARA) – The Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration Ministry has informed that the use of appropriate technology has led to villages looking at the future with more optimism. “Technological innovation always acts as a spring, which makes countries, regions, and villages (advance) further, making the future (filled with) optimism,” the head of development and information at the ministry, Ivanovich Agusta, said at the “Nusantara Appropriate Technology Event” in Cirebon, West Java, on Wednesday. Currently, villages have succeeded in changing the innovation diffusion curve, he noted. During the 2017–2018 period, the village innovation project managed to compile the names of more than 20 thousand innovation-producing villages, which account for 29 percent of villages in the country. “The reality on the practice is definitely more than that,” he remarked. Dr. Timothy David Kimball Charged With Indecency With Child – Law & Crime https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/dr-timothy-david-kimball-charged-with-indecency-with-child-law-crime/ Dr. Timothy David Kimball The head of a psychology clinic that specializes in counseling for adolescents in Texas was arrested after he allegedly admitted to placing hidden cameras in the bedroom of one of his patients and using the footage to pleasure himself sexually. Dr. Timothy David Kimball, 43, was arrested and charged with one count of indecency with a child by contact, a second-degree felony, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show. Dr. Kimball is the President and CEO of Texas Psychological & Consultation Services (TPACS), which provides psychological evaluation, testing, and assessment for children in the San Antonio area, according to the company’s website. According to a report from San Antonio ABC affiliate KSAT-TV, the victim’s mother employed Kimball’s services for her minor daughter. The mother reportedly became suspicious, however, that Kimball may have “touched her daughter inappropriately” after having a “strange conversation” with the doctor, per the report. In an arrest warrant obtained by the station, the mother reportedly recounted a conversation she had with Dr. Kimball during which he allegedly told her that “if the police ever went to his work, they would discover things that would put him in jail for life.” After the suspicious conversation, the victim’s mother searched her daughter’s bedroom, where she reportedly found a hidden camera designed to appear like a USB charging port. The victim’s mother then reportedly contacted the San Antonio Police Department regarding the hidden camera. SAPD officers reached out to Dr. Kimball at his place of employment and he reportedly agreed to provide investigators with a statement. According to KSAT, investigators say that during the interview, Kimball “admitted to recording the victim using hidden cameras,” saying that his actions started at the beginning of August 2022. “During the interview with police, Kimball told them he purchased four hidden cameras, which he placed in the victim’s bedroom and would view those recordings at his office while touching himself in a sexual manner,” the station reported. “He also admitted to becoming physically aroused while giving the girl a back massage.” In addition to the reported alleged confessions about surreptitiously recording the minor victim and the back massage, Dr. Kimball also allegedly told investigators that he had a “compulsion to his perversion” which he had tried to overcome. Kimball was taken into custody on Aug. 24 and booked into the Bexar County Adult Detention Center. He was released on Aug. 25 after posting bond of $125,000, online jail records show. It is not currently clear if Dr. Kimball is currently still providing psychological services at TPACS. He is still listed on the website as the President/CEO of the company. Dr. Kimball’s personal bio says that he’s a “problem solver and a people person” with a “strong background in both management and entrepreneurship.” TPACS did not immediately respond to a message from Law&Crime. Top 8 Off The Beaten Path Things To Do In O’ahu – Travel Off Path https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/top-8-off-the-beaten-path-things-to-do-in-oahu-travel-off-path/ Last Updated 6 mins ago With sunny, tropical weather even in the deepest months of winter, O’ahu is a gorgeous island that’s a popular choice as a vacation destination year-round. If you’re planning an upcoming trip to this island, here are 8 off the beaten path things to do that are sure to be memorable! 1. Explore The Mermaid Caves The mermaid caves are a group of partially submerged caves located near Nanakuli Beach Park. These stunning formations are truly breathtaking to see, and you can even go for a dip in the pools they form! You’ll want to check the tide before heading out – you’ll want to go at low tide to make sure the caves are accessible. Getting there also requires hiking over some lava rock formations, so some somewhat sturdy shoes may be a good idea as well. 2. Swing By Kahuku Farms Pick up some fresh, local produce with a trip to Kahuku Farms! This working farm features a shop that offers a wide variety of products, including all-natural beauty products, and even an onsite cafe that offers smoothies, acai bowls, and more. You can also go on a tour of the farm for those interested in learning more about its background and daily operations! Don’t Forget Travel Insurance For Your Next Trip! Travel Off Path Recommends These 5 Fast and Easy Travel Insurance Plans To Sign up For Now Plans starting at only $10 per week 3. Check Out Kawela Bay If you’re looking for a less crowded, family-friendly beach, consider checking out Kawela Bay! Located near Turtle Bay Resort. It’s a bit more secluded than many beaches on O’ahu and doesn’t draw nearly as many crowds as more popular ones. Despite this, it’s also fairly well protected from the surf and features generally shallower and calmer waters. 4. Enjoy Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden If you’re looking for a relaxing way to spend an afternoon, consider strolling around Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden. This sprawling garden features a huge variety of plants native to the island. It’s also entirely free to visit, making this a great option for those looking for some budget-friendly things to do! 5. Explore Ka’ena Point State Park This is another great choice for those looking to enjoy the beauty of O’ahu without quite as many crowds. Ka’ena Point State Park is located in the northwestern part of the island. The main trail is a 3-mile long trek that includes tide pools and volcanic rock formations along the way. It can get hot, and there’s no water available along the route, so be sure to bring plenty yourself when heading out! 6. Hike Kaiwa Ridge If you’re looking for some gorgeous views of the island and some fresh air, this is the option for you! Kaiwa Ridge Trail is a 1.7-mile out-and-back trail that leads up to some gorgeous views of the island and features the remains of old military bunkers along the way. Sections of the trail do get a bit steep, so this may not be the best option for those with young children. 7. Visit A Submarine Museum See an actual historic submarine with a trip to the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum. Guests can view a variety of historical artifacts related to submarine use in the military, including letters from soldiers during war and wartime submarine battle flags. Generally, guests can also go on a tour of the USS Bowfin, a large fleet attack submarine used in WWII. However, the tour is currently closed for scheduled maintenance until November 1st – for those planning a trip later in the year, be sure to check their website for tour information! 8. Visit An Escape Room An escape room probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of O’ahu. However, if you’re looking for a fresh twist to throw into your vacation plans, it may be just the thing! Visiting a room such as those offered by Breakout Waikiki can be a great bonding activity for couples, friends, and family alike and is sure to make some priceless memories. Metaskins Co-Founder David Cummings On The Peoples Metaverse BSC NEWS
Metaskins Co-Founder David Cummings On The Peoples Metaverse BSC NEWS
Metaskins Co-Founder David Cummings On The People’s Metaverse – BSC NEWS https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/metaskins-co-founder-david-cummings-on-the-peoples-metaverse-bsc-news/ Metaskins Co-Founder David Cummings said the decentralized metaverse is more promising to creators than centralized projects from major tech companies. Metaskins Co-Founder: Metaverse not ‘Meta and Intel’ Metaskins Studio Co-Founder David Cummings believes that decentralization is key to the Metaverse reaching its full potential, for creators and users. Broadly speaking, the Metaverse can refer to the online digital world where people can work, play and socialize. Many people believe the Metaverse already exists in Web2 games like Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite. The Metaverse, of course, is a major developing theme in blockchain. Some predict huge growth in wearable Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) in parallel with the rise of the Metaverse. The idea of clothes made of pixels has been around for a long time, for example, in video games. In the blockchain Metaverse, people can explore their preferred fashions with NFT outfits. Metaskins is one company that’s making waves in the Metaverse. Beyond character skins and wearables, the Metaverse design studio also specializes in Metaverse infrastructure, gaming and events. Source At the recent Messari Mainnet event in New York City, BSC News had the opportunity to speak with Cummings to learn more about his thoughts on the Metaverse. “I’ve always been very interested in crypto and investing in crypto, etc. Just from watching the younger generation, and even for people my own age, this proved to me that Metaverse would become an important part of the next revolution of the internet and has become such an important part of my life since then. To me, it doesn’t seem like it stops here,” Cummings said. Metaskins has thrown successful Metaverse events, from partnerships like Bare Knuckle Fight Championships to Metaverse casino nights in Decentraland. The company created high-resolution 3D art in The Holy One’s NFT collection as well as in The Fetus Apes NFT collection. In addition, Metaskins has helped major legacy companies get on board the Web3 revolution, such as Etro and PUMA. The Decentralized Metaverse Major tech companies are competing to stake their claims in the online Metaverse via their centralized platforms. For example, Facebook renamed itself Meta last year, and soon after Microsoft announced that its Teams videoconferencing product would become the workplace Metaverse of choice. Meanwhile, decentralized Web3 Metaverses are attracting billions of dollars in venture capital. Source But, what do decentralized Metaverse projects offer that giants like Meta and Microsoft do not? Cummings said centralized Metaverses constrain creativity and restrict potential earnings. “Centralized ecosystems require creators to follow their guidelines completely. There are so many different barriers to get around that it ends up being a terrible experience for the creator,” Cummings said. “The first thing you’re going to get is probably 12% of the pie. Second, the minute they say this isn’t good for their brand or product, you’re out.” Web3 allows users to move digital assets across platforms, Cummings said, which can exponentially increase the value of those assets compared to Web2. Music NFTs, for example, let listeners own and play music on any platform, making them more valuable. Further, the artist benefits directly from the sale of the NFT. “You know, if you’re part of this decentralized Metaverse ecosystem, everyone wants to support each other’s projects and visions because they understand that the work that goes into each initiative and that 100% of its profits go back to the creators,” Cummings said. Justin Sun, the founder of Tron, described Web3 as “an autonomous creation in which users, if not owners, are beneficiaries.” “So I think there’s something really important about building out the decentralized universe. That’s the members, and the people. When I think of the Metaverse, I don’t think of Meta and Intel,” Cummings said. What Is Metaskins: Metaskins is a one-stop shop for Metaverse or Non-Fungible Token (NFT) needs. Based in Colombia, the design studio specializes in personalized digital wearables, custom infrastructure built on Metaverse parcels and brand-tailored Metaverse events. The company’s work and services includes high-quality Metaverse-ready 3D avatars, digital modeling, marketing, smart contract development, video game development and more. Metaskins’ partners and clients include Puma, Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship, MMA TV, The Holy Ones NFT collection, Fetus Apes NFT collection, Snarky Sharks NFT, NFtweak, etc. Where to find Metaskins: Website | Twitter

South Korea To Roll Out Digital IDs As Banks Push Blockchain Driver’s Licenses – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/south-korea-to-roll-out-digital-ids-as-banks-push-blockchain-drivers-licenses-cryptonews/ Source: Tippapatt/Adobe South Korea may soon do away with plastic – and ditch physical forms of ID in favor of blockchain technology-powered alternatives. Smartphone ownership is estimated to be upward of 88% in South Korea – with some sources claiming the figure may be as high as 95%. And tech firms, the government, the police force, and banks have responded by launching initiatives aimed at doing away with plastic driver’s license cards and social security ID cards. Instead, they now favor blockchain-powered digital alternatives. Woori Bank, one of the nation’s largest commercial banks, announced that it would begin actively “promoting the issuance and use of mobile driver’s licenses” at the 2022 International Security Industry Expo, E Today reported. Bank staff will begin informing customers on how to go about receiving a blockchain-powered ID. These digital cards can be obtained on-the-spot by using machines in nationwide branches of the National Police Agency and the Road Traffic Authority. Banks – such as Woori – have also begun accepting smartphone-based driver’s licenses as a form of identification at branches this year. Blockchain ID Push Intensifies The move comes hot on the heels of a report from Bloomberg this week, which quoted Suh Bo-ram, the Director-General of South Korea’s digital government bureau, as stating that smartphone-based ID cards would be the norm by 2024. Suh told the news outlet that the government hopes to roll its solution out in 2024. Seoul hopes to transition 45 million of its 52 million citizens onto the cards by 2026. Suh also confirmed that the solution will make use of decentralized identity (DID) solutions (also known as distributed identity authentication). He called the solutions an “advanced strand of blockchain technology.” Suh stated: “Every service that hasn’t been able to fully transition online will now be able to do so.” DID solutions have been in the pipelines for several years in South Korea. Both the private sector and the government are keen to develop contact-free, online ID solutions that make use of blockchain technology. Tech giants like Samsung and LG have entered the fray, with some predicting a coming “war” of rival blockchain-powered ID offerings. Following a successful launch in 2020, the Ministry of Public Administration and Security announced in July this year that citizens nationwide could use mobile driver’s licenses stored on its own app. Earlier this year, two of Woori’s rivals, Kookmin Bank and IBK Industrial Bank, announced that they would use DID services to allow military personnel online access to banking products. The solution will allow soldiers to prove their identities without the need to visit bricks-and-mortar branches.

BMW Plans To Invest $1.7 Billion In U.S. To Produce Electric Vehicles – CNBC https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/bmw-plans-to-invest-1-7-billion-in-u-s-to-produce-electric-vehicles-cnbc/ BMW Group plans to invest $1.7 billion in its U.S. operations to build electric vehicles and batteries, the company announced Wednesday. The investment will include $1 billion to prepare for production of EVs at the automaker’s existing Spartanburg factory in South Carolina, and $700 million for a new high-voltage battery-assembly facility in nearby Woodruff. The German automaker expects to produce at least six fully electric models in the U.S. by 2030. The Spartanburg facility, where the investment announcement took place, currently produces BMW “X” SUVs and lithium-ion battery modules for its two plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Production of the new hybrid-electric BMW XM is expected to begin later this year.  “Going forward, it will also be a major driver for our electrification strategy, and we will produce at least six fully electric BMW X models here by 2030,” BMW Chair Oliver Zipse said in a release. BMW on Wednesday also announced a deal to purchase battery cells from Japan-based Envision AESC, which will build a new battery cell factory in South Carolina to supply the BMW plants. The Envision AESC facility is expected to have annual production capacity of 30 gigawatt hours — in line with plans of other automakers and battery suppliers for U.S. plants, BMW said. A spokesperson for Envision AESC was not immediately available for comment. In April, the company announced plans to spend $2 billion to build a second U.S. plant in Kentucky. Its first plant in Tennessee supplies Nissan Motor. BMW has already announced four additional battery cell factories will be built in Europe and China to meet its demand for next-generation battery cells. The announcements are the latest of several recent multibillion-dollar investments in U.S production of EVs and batteries amid tightening emissions regulations and legislation to encourage domestic manufacturing. Automakers are also facing stricter sourcing guidelines that are part of the Inflation Reduction Act and the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, formerly the North American Free Trade Agreement. Both policies increased requirements for domestically sourced vehicle parts and materials to avoid tariffs or qualify for financial incentives.

Israel Eyes Government Bond Issuance Via Blockchain Technology – U.S. News & World Report https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/israel-eyes-government-bond-issuance-via-blockchain-technology-u-s-news-world-report/ JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israel’s government is preparing to issue government bonds using a blockchain technology platform, the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE) said on Wednesday. Implementation of advanced technologies such as blockchain, the TASE said, would reduce costs, shorten the duration issuance and clearing of government bonds, improve transparency and mitigate risks. The issuance is still in the planning stage and the Finance Ministry and TASE are examining an application for the sale of digital government bonds on a blockchain platform. Israel’s Accountant General and the TASE said they were motivated by developments in financial markets in recent years, including using the Blockchain Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) as well possible issuance of central bank digital currencies. As part of a pilot issuance, local and foreign banks will participate in a live test and will be connected to a dedicated blockchain system that will be developed by the TASE and private companies. The issue will ultimately be in digital currency and transferred to electronic wallets. (Reporting by Steven Scheer; Editing by Alex Richardson) Copyright 2022 Thomson Reuters.
