Advice | Using The Wrong ATM In Europe Could Cost You Hundreds Of Dollars – The Washington Post https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/advice-using-the-wrong-atm-in-europe-could-cost-you-hundreds-of-dollars-the-washington-post/ Using an ATM overseas isn’t like withdrawing from a cash machine in the United States. If you rush to agree to terms without paying close attention, you could wind up losing hundreds of dollars on unnecessary conversion fees. I wish I had warned my brother about this when he visited me in Athens this summer. As we were exploring the historic Plaka district one hot afternoon, he excused himself to withdraw money from an automatic teller. A few minutes later, he returned with 1,000 euros. The cost: $1,219. That couldn’t be right, I told him. But his receipt from a company called Euronet showed the breakdown: a transaction fee of 3.95 euros, an exchange rate of 0.82 euros to the dollar and a 13 percent markup from the going exchange rate. I asked him if the ATM had disclosed these expenses during the transaction. “I saw the 3.95 euro fee,” he said. “But I didn’t notice the exchange rate and the markup.” Many customers also fail to notice unfavorable exchange rates that allow some companies to cash in. “That’s one of the hidden ATM costs,” said Arun Tharmarajah, head of European banking and expansion at Wise, a financial tech company that specializes in online money transfers. “Customers don’t know about them.” So why am I kicking myself about these high ATM expenses? Because I knew about them, and I should have said something. I routinely hear from readers who report fees and surcharges that almost make the exchange rate from the ATM in Greece look like a bargain. And back in 2020, when I was living in Lisbon, I encountered a pricey ATM operated by Euronet. I had spent the last of my euros on a loaf of fresh pão de centeio at a cash-only local bakery. Just across the street, I spotted an ATM. I was relieved when it accepted my card, but that feeling quickly gave way to dismay. The exchange rate looked off. Instead of my U.S. dollar being worth 0.90 euros, it only gave me 0.80. Then I checked the numbers: The machine charged a $4 fee, plus a 12 percent markup — displayed on the screen in small print — for exchanging my dollars. Euronet Worldwide operates a network of more than 50,000 ATMs in 63 countries, according to the company. Stephanie Taylor, a spokeswoman for Euronet Worldwide, said all of its charges are “clear, transparent and prominently displayed” before every transaction. “The customer may opt out of the transaction at any time at no cost,” she said in an email. She said Euronet is committed to offering convenient cash to people around the world, but that there is a cost involved with providing this service, “which we believe is fair and reasonable.” Simone Semprini, who lives in Lisbon and is the CEO of TourScanner, a comparison site for tours and activities, says high ATM fees are a big concern for his customers. “In the last few years, we have seen the rise of ATMs that charge huge commissions,” he said. The ATMs endear themselves to locals in two ways. First, by handsomely compensating shopkeepers who host them (merchants have told Semprini they receive up to $1,000 a month to keep a cash machine at their location). And also, by allowing customers with a bank account in the ATM’s home country to withdraw with lower fees. Greg Grobmyer, a dentist from Chattanooga, Tenn., says he was stunned when he returned from a trip to Poland and found $100 in commissions and fees on his credit card bill. He’d found a cash machine in Krakow after needing to settle up a hotel bill. Although the exchange rate didn’t look great, he didn’t run the numbers before accepting his withdrawal. “It is unnerving to see those not-so-tiny commissions mounting up to hundreds of dollars,” he said in an email. “Especially if you can avoid them.” How to avoid high ATM charges So how do you avoid high ATM charges? Preparation is key. Call your bank before you leave the country to find out what kind of out-of-network ATM fees it charges for overseas transactions. Some banks waive the fees or will credit you after you return to the United States. Michael Foguth, founder of Foguth Financial Group in Brighton, Mich., recommends calling your bank before your trip to order some currency of the country where you’re traveling. He says it may be less expensive, but not free. It requires an in-person visit, and your bank may also offer a less favorable exchange rate when you buy foreign currency. There are workarounds once you’re on the ground. Mine was to head to a bank ATM, which may give you a better exchange rate. Not a perfect solution: Halfway through the transaction, the machine asked if I wanted to conduct the transaction in dollars or euros. As with credit cards, it’s best to conduct transactions in the local currency and let your bank do the conversion. Another fix: using a multicurrency debit card to reduce your exchange costs. The financial services app Revolut, for example, converts your money at the more favorable interbank rate (that’s the rate banks charge each other to exchange money). For transactions at out-of-network ATMs, Revolut doesn’t charge a fee for withdrawals of up to $1,200 (or the local currency equivalent) per month. After that, it charges a 2 percent fee of the value of an ATM withdrawal. Wise, another popular app, also uses the real rate and charges for exchanges on a sliding scale. It’ll cost about $4 to convert $1,000 to euros. For ATMs, there’s no charge for the first $250 in a month, and you pay a 2 percent fee for anything above that. Andy Abramson, who runs a communications consultancy in Las Vegas, has used both services and says he prefers them to traditional bank transactions. “I load them up with money and then use them when traveling,” Abramson said. “I can add money when needed in seconds and be spending locally in local currency without any fees.”

Nestle September Quarter Profit Rises 8% To Rs 668 Crore – The Indian Express https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/nestle-september-quarter-profit-rises-8-to-rs-668-crore-the-indian-express/ FMCG major Nestle India on Wednesday reported 8.25 per cent rise in net profit at Rs 668.34 crore for the third quarter ended September 2022, helped by a volume growth across categories. The company, which follows January-December financial year, had posted a net profit of Rs 617.37 crore in the same period a year ago, it said in a BSE filing. Net sales were up 18.24 per cent to Rs 4,591 crore during the period under review as against Rs 3,882.57 crore in the year-ago period, the company said. It has “witnessed the highest sales growth during a quarter in the last five years,” said an earning statement from the company. Nestle India Chairman and Managing Director Suresh Narayanan said this achievement has been “on continued strong volume and mix evolution with broad-based double-digit growth” across all categories. “Growth has been very strong in the large metros and mega cities and continued to be robust across smaller town classes, including rural markets,” he said. Total expenses in September quarter were at Rs 3,715.40 crore as against Rs 3,081.99 crore in the year-ago period. Domestic sales were up 18.27 per cent to Rs 4,361.15 crore as compared to Rs 3,687.37 crore in the year-ago period. The “domestic sales growth is broad-based with a healthy balance of pricing and volume,” said Nestle. During the quarter, e-commerce channel contributed 7.2 per cent of Nestle India’s sales. This was largely fuelled by new, emerging formats such as ‘quick commerce’ and ‘click & mortar’, it added. Its exports were up 15.68 per cent to Rs 205.45 crore as compared to the year-ago period. The increase in exports was led by the “proliferation of Indian product portfolio in new markets and expanding new categories, especially wider offerings in MAGGI and confectionery remains a key focus,” it said. Commenting on commodity outlook in the short to medium term, Nestle India said: “We are witnessing early signs of stability in prices of a few commodities such as edible oils and packaging materials. “However, fresh milk, fuels, grains and green coffee costs are expected to remain firm with the continued increase in demand and volatility,” it added. Meanwhile, in a separate filing, Nestle India informed that its board, in a meeting held on Wednesday, declared a second interim dividend of Rs 120 per equity share of Rs 10 each for 2022. Shares of Nestle India were trading 1.62 per cent up at Rs 19,700 apiece on the BSE.

U.S. Mulls Joint Weapons Production With Taiwan, Nikkei Reports – Reuters.com https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/u-s-mulls-joint-weapons-production-with-taiwan-nikkei-reports-reuters-com/ TOKYO, Oct 19 (Reuters) – The U.S. government is considering a plan to jointly produce weapons with Taiwan, Japan’s Nikkei newspaper said on Wednesday, citing three sources. Washington wants to step up production capacity for U.S.-designed arms and speed up their transfer as part of a move to bolster deterrence against China, Nikkei reported. Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Sunday that China would never renounce the right to use force over Taiwan, which it views as its own territory, but that it would strive for a peaceful resolution. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Taiwan’s presidential office said earlier this week Taiwan would not back down on its sovereignty and would not compromise on freedom and democracy, but that meeting on the battlefield was not an option. The Nikkei report added that a person with direct knowledge of the U.S. government’s deliberations said discussions had begun, while a different source said it was likely to take some time. Possibilities would include the U.S. providing technology to produce weapons in Taiwan, or producing the weapons in the United States using Taiwanese parts, the Nikkei added. Tensions in the region remain high. On Tuesday, the Taiwan Defence Ministry said two Chinese air force planes crossed the Taiwan Strait median line. Apple Cuts Production Of IPhone 14 Plus | Technology News – The Indian Express https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/apple-cuts-production-of-iphone-14-plus-technology-news-the-indian-express/ Apple Inc is cutting production of iPhone 14 Plus within weeks of starting shipments as it re-evaluates demand for the mid-range model, the Information reported on Tuesday, citing two people involved in the company’s supply chain. The Cupertino, California-based company told at least one manufacturer in China to immediately halt production of iPhone 14 Plus components, according to the report. The move comes at a time when the global smartphone market has been softening, shrinking 9% in the third quarter compared with the same period a year earlier, according to estimates from data research firm Canalys, which expects weak demand over the next six to nine months. Apple did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The iPhone 14 Plus, part of a new lineup announced on Sept. 7, is positioned as a cheaper alternative to its more expensive iPhone Pro models and started being shipped to customers on Oct. 7. Last month, Apple dropped its plan to increase production of the new iPhone models as an anticipated surge in demand failed to materialize, according to a Bloomberg News report

Dallas Developer Takes On rocky San Antonio Project The Real Deal
Dallas Developer Takes On ‘rocky’ San Antonio Project – The Real Deal https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/dallas-developer-takes-on-rocky-san-antonio-project-the-real-deal/ GenCap exec Mark Johnson and Westover Hills in San Antonio (Google Maps, LinkedIn, Getty) A Dallas developer is betting big on San Antonio’s job market by trying to turn a rock hill into luxury apartments. Genesis Capital Partners, which operates as GenCap, filed plans with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation to build a $48 million multifamily project on a 16-acre lot in Westover Hills. Bexar County records show a deed of trust changed hands June 2 between a GenCap affiliate and the seller, K Partners Westover Hills LP, for $3.65 million, according to the San Antonio Business Journal. However, Mark Johnson, who heads GenCap’s multifamily development, told ABJ that the final closing cost was closer to $5.5 million — still cheaper than the county’s $6.65 million assessed valuation of the land. Johnson said the property’s motivated seller, who had marketed the land for three months, was one reason for the discount. That, and the land’s rocky composition. “It’s one big rock hill,” said Johnson. “There’s about six inches of dirt and the rest of it is rock. There’s a lot of dirt work required to get this project going.” Regardless, GenCap is set on this project because of Westover Hills’ growing job market. “We follow jobs,” he said. “We look to where the jobs are growing and where there’s other commercial development.” The developer aims to start construction in January with a completion date in early 2025. Park at Westover Hills, as it’s called, will offer studios, one- and two-bedroom units and townhomes between $1,600 and $1,700 per month — with 372 units in total. — Maddy Sperling

Seven Predictions For The Creative Reimagination Of Travel In 2023: Booking.com – TTG Asia https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/seven-predictions-for-the-creative-reimagination-of-travel-in-2023-booking-com-ttg-asia/ People around the world are feeling more optimistic about travelling in 2023 compared to 2022 and, despite some current instability felt globally, nearly three quarters (72%) report that travelling will always be worth it. To understand how travel will be reimagined in 2023, Booking.com commissioned extensive research with over 24,000 travellers across 32 countries and territories to reveal seven emerging travel predictions, showing that the needs of travellers are moving in a lot of different directions to adapt to changing times. 2023 will see a rise in destination business retreats where the focus will be on strengthening relationships and corporate recreation rather than work 1. Saving to splurge Travellers in Singapore will continue to prioritise travel in 2023, but will be more mindful over how to make the most of their travel budget and what takes precedence. People will still place carefree getaways at the top of their agenda, with 50% of travellers saying that investing in a vacation remains a top priority for them. But being budget conscious is key, with nearly 70% of travellers continuing to spotlight travel while seeking more bang for their buck. People will plan travel budgets more tightly by taking advantage of deals, hacks and smartly-timed travel (63%) and prioritising value for money with discounts and loyalty programmes (64%). Nearly two-thirds (58%) will look to save money by considering off-season destinations or longer routes on the journey, while the majority (66%) will be planning travel more in advance in the hope of securing a better deal. About 64% believe the best use of their budget is to opt for one or two longer vacations instead of several short breaks. Within this context, many local travellers are also surprisingly prepared to dial up their spending – and even splurge – on the components of their trip that mean the most to them. More than half (53%) admit that they plan to be more indulgent in their spending habits while on vacation to make up for the lack of travel during the last couple of years, while 50% plan to spend lavishly to ensure they maximise their trip, and every experience is worth it. 2. Glamourising the good ol’ days Amid global instability and the desire for escapism, people intend to carve out travel experiences that harken back to simpler times, with nostalgic getaways (90%) that provide the thrill of reliving the glory days top of the wish list in 2023. There’s a desire – even for millennials and Gen-Zs who never lived it – to disappear into the romanticism of a pre-digital era, with nearly a quarter (21%) of travellers chasing experiences that evoke (faux) emotive memories of days gone past, such as visiting landmarks or attractions featured in iconic retro films or opting for a bus as a primary mode of transport to live the group spirit of school trips. Singapore travellers are no longer forfeiting play in favour of rest and relaxation, increasingly seeking the adrenaline rush of theme parks (60%) and activities such as escape rooms, scavenger hunts and building fortresses with giant building blocks. With millennials now the parents of young kids, there will be an increase in destinations previously popular in the 80s and 90s such as Budva in Montenegro, a glam alternative to St Tropez for celebs in the 80s or Bolzano in Italy, popular for its retro Christmas markets – both destinations which feature on the list of 2023 trending destinations. Millennial travellers will be first to book emerging era-themed accommodation that transport them back to a time they hold close to their hearts and will likely be doing so with family by their side (54%) with ‘family reunion’ multi-generational trips top of the travel agenda in 2023. 3. Preppers in paradise Camouflaged cabins, campfire cuisine and compasses; going off-grid will never be more sought after than in 2023. Over a third (39%) of Singapore travellers want their travelling experiences to have a more back-to-basics feel, and are looking for ‘off-grid’ style vacations to escape from reality (58%), and switch off and experience life with only the bare necessities (39%). Travellers are also keen to use travel in 2023 as an opportunity to learn survival skills (60%) including how to source clean water (44%), light a fire from scratch (39%), forage for food in the wild (35%) and even prep for an apocalypse (40%). Expect to see more eco-friendly, earthly stays springing up to accommodate burnt-out city dwellers searching for simplicity, as well as accommodations offering guidance for guests on how to be more self-sufficient, for example, sourcing and preparing their own meals during their stay. An increase in wilderness survival schools where travellers will learn essential skills needed to live through a cataclysmic event are also predicted to pop up around the world. ‘Off-grid’ in 2023 will not necessarily mean roughing it though. There is a common perception that this means giving up luxuries (59%), however there is a strong desire to combine the two with 57% only considering travelling ‘off-grid’ if it can be at a more indulgent stay. However, close to two-thirds (65%) will have a non-negotiable requirement: phone and internet connection at their destination is essential. 4. Virtual voyagers Half (50%) of Singapore travellers reported that they will be turning to virtual reality next year to inspire their vacation choices, and travel will enter the ever-evolving 3D virtual space of the metaverse in earnest in 2023. With 39% of travellers keen to embark on a multi-day VR or AR travel experience, the metaverse will be more than ‘try before you buy’; it will educate, entertain, and inspire people, opening the door for infinite adventure. Travellers can experiment with different travel experiences in a year when metaverse worlds will begin replicating and reimaging destinations. Moving beyond 2023, haptic feedback, the use of touch to communicate with users, will make virtual travel a truly immersive experience, delivering a credible sense of 3D touch, such as the feel of soft grains of sand and the warmth of the sun. Travellers will become bolder in their real-life trip choices, after being able to visit them in the metaverse first via their online avatars – especially handy for those who might feel anxious about trying somewhere new, with 57% more likely to travel to destinations that they would not have previously considered after virtually experiencing them. While the metaverse will offer a new way to experience travel in the year ahead, it still will not stop people from booking a ticket to their next destination, as 51% believe that a virtual experience is not fulfilling enough to check it off the bucket list. Travellers are keen to use travel in 2023 as an opportunity to learn survival skills 5. Delight in the discomfort zone Close to half (48%) of Singapore travellers want to experience complete culture shock in 2023 – be it travelling somewhere with completely different cultural experiences and languages (54%) or exploring lesser-known cities with hidden gems that are not already on the radar (25%). This includes trending destination Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah on the Malaysian island of Borneo, where travellers will be able to immerse themselves in nature, wildlife and the local culture the city offers. In 2023, 79% of travellers will be looking forward to experiencing out-of-comfort-zone travel that pushes them to the limits, which will result in an influx of niche experiences encouraging people to push their travel escapades to the extreme. Nearly half (49%) are on the hunt for the world’s most exotic delicacy such as the hottest chilli pepper, while 38% want to use their vacation for extra-terrestrial exploration on UFO or alien-spotting tours. Unsurprisingly, this ‘culture shook’ traveller is also partial to throwing caution to the wind, with 27% wanting to buy a one way ticket in 2023 and follow their instinct wherever it takes them. 6. From daily grind to great company escape Employees are increasingly keen to preserve vacation time for complete escapism – 70% want their trips to be strictly work free in 2023, and while 51% are not interested in working while away, they would consider clocking in for a company retreat or trip. As such, travelling for business will be back on the agenda in 2023. However, unlike pre-pandemic times, employees are seeking more opportunities to build team camaraderie in real life, and away from the office, reflecting a growing demand to incorporate work travel with productive play. In fact, 48% of the Singapore workforce is looking forward to their employer planning a ‘real life’ work trip to bring people together and 55% would like to see their employer use the money saved from the shift to remote/hybrid working models spent on corporate travel or retreats. In response, 2023 will see a rise in destination business retreats where the focus will be on strengthening relationships and corporate recreation rather than work. Employers will gamify the retreat experience and immerse staff in a world where teamwork is the only option. Think survivor-themed trips at luxury cabins or country farmhouses complete with communal cooking and outdoor adventure activities, or crime-centric escapes where spy school, detective courses or CSI simulations double as a sight-seeing scavenger hunt. Businesses stand to see benefits, too – 62% of workers in Singapore believe exploring new places will inspire them to be more productive at work. 7. Peaceful pilgrimages Seeking to re-centre the mind, meditation and mindfulness getaways are ever popular with Singapore travellers (45%), while 42% aim to find peace at a silent retreat and 39% are kee...

Nvidia Fashions Industrial-Strength Metaverse-As-A-Service Forbes
Nvidia Fashions Industrial-Strength Metaverse-As-A-Service Forbes
Nvidia Fashions Industrial-Strength Metaverse-As-A-Service – Forbes https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/nvidia-fashions-industrial-strength-metaverse-as-a-service-forbes/ Nvidia Nvidia, having announced an unexpected entry into the field of metaverse-enabling software, brings a surprising focus on industrial applications to an emerging technology that has largely been garnering attention for novel consumer services, gaming and marketing. With a significant revenue windfall from selling its graphics chips to Ethereum miners come and gone, the chipmaker now sees an opportunity for building out immersive manufacturing-design capabilities based on its computing systems into an industrial-oriented metaverse. CEO Jensen Huang describes this as a “3D extension of the internet.” That may be at odds with the outlook for a decentralized, blockchain-based metaverse that shifts away from the current corporate-dominated model, a path championed by enthusiasts of so-called web3 technologies. “A lot of people think that—when you say “metaverse,” they imagine putting on VR headsets, but it’s obviously not just that,” Huang told technology news publication VentureBeat. “You can do that, but you can also enjoy it in 2D. One of my favorite ways of enjoying the metaverse is a whole bunch of robots in the metaverse doing work and communicating with robots that are outside in the physical world,” he added. “The physical world and the metaverse can be connected in a lot of different ways. It doesn’t just have to be humans. It can be machine to machine.” Nvidia’s industrial focus stands in contrast to that of Meta–the company that liked the thought of social media combining with the metaverse so much it changed its name–which signed up with partners like Microsoft and Accenture to develop office-related functionality after a year in which its more leisurely approach flopped. In fact, the glamorous 3D spaces where human avatars can shop, party and work are struggling to attract users. Most visitors to Meta’s Horizon Worlds generally don’t return after the first month, and the user base has steadily declined since the spring, according to a recent Wall Street Journal report. Decentraland, a blockchain-based metaverse valued at $1 billion, where users can buy plots of virtual land, had been reported by CoinDesk to have a measly 38 daily active users, though the company disputed the claim last week, saying the number is 8,000. Meanwhile, Nvidia is rolling out simulations for developing, testing and managing artificial-intelligence-based robots (Isaac Sim) and autonomous vehicles (DRIVE Sim). The platforms are part of the company’s suite of cloud services purpose-built for metaverse applications called Omniverse Cloud. Unveiled at Nvidia’s annual GPU Technology Conference (known as GTC) last month, it is the company’s first software-and infrastructure-as-a-service offering, which is already being used by the likes of Siemens, Europe’s largest industrial manufacturer, and Croatian luxury carmaker Rimac. “We’ve always understood from the beginning that we’re not just a chip company,” says Rev Lebaredian, vice president of Omniverse and simulation technology at Nvidia. “Software, the understanding of the whole stack has been critical to the type of computing we do. Accelerated computing is all about vertical integration of the technology from chips all the way up to applications.” While metaverse-enabling software is a relatively new market for the Santa Clara, California-based tech giant, its 3D collaborative tools under the Omniverse umbrella, based on Pixar’s Universal Scene Description standard, have attracted over 200,000 individual users and more than 700 companies since launch in 2019. In addition, they run on chips and hardware Nvidia is most famous for, including NVIDIA OVX, a computing system specifically designed to power large-scale digital twin simulations, which replicate real-world spaces in a metaverse environment. “There’s already plenty of understanding or at least discussion and enthusiasm around building a metaverse that has gaming and social kinds of experiences. There’s very little public discourse about how the metaverse will help industries,” Lebaredian says. That doesn’t mean that our technology stack isn’t applicable to things outside of the industrial use cases. It’s just where our focus is,” he adds. The company has identified the potential market for Omniverse enterprise software at $150 billion. Lebaredian told Forbes the company has “hundreds of engineers” working on Omniverse and invested “many hundreds of millions of dollars into it,” but he declined to provide the specifics. “Our investment has been growing. This is a long-term play. We’re going to be doing this for decades,” said the executive. As for most companies jumping on the metaverse bandwagon, it may take a while for Nvidia to realize a return on these investments. Matt Bryson, senior vice president of equity research at Wedbush, says Nvidia’s vision is “compelling” but “significant Omniverse use cases and related revenues remain some ways out.” Still, Lebaredian believes Nvidia has a role to play in whatever vision of the metaverse will prevail—be it enterprise-controlled applications or decentralized havens of web3. “History has shown that usually it’s not one or the other. We’re going to see some combination of these things,” he says. “I think our computers will be used regardless of which path you go from here.”

Fret not because the vivo V5 has got your back. Meet the 64MP OIS Night Camera! You simply have to choose from their exciting collection of bokeh flare shapes and adorn your portraits with an artistic edge others will envy you for. Sail smoothly with V25’s 8GB Extended RAM! When you are switching between multiple apps or graphics-intensive games, your phone needs sufficient RAM to boost the experience. V25 offers up to 8GB of additional RAM in times like this for noticeably smoother operations. You can also expand your storage space to 1TB and sit back to enjoy your favourite content wherever you are because it will all be stored in your phone. The crux here is: Take as many photos and HD videos as you like, and install as many apps as you need; this phone will give you the smoothest experience you could imagine. Fuel it up instantly with 44W Lightning FlashCharge! Constantly plugging your phone to refuel it is a redundant practice that only drains your battery quickly and impacts the overall performance of your phone over a longer period of time. The heat emissions as a result of the frequent charging is also not good for your ear health. vivo V5’s Super Charge Pump does a great job of reversing this experience for you. It converts energy at up to 97.5% efficiency, so your phone charges up in the blink of an eye without overheating. Not just this, the powerful 4500mAh battery juices up quick and lasts like a champ. Here too, vivo V25, with a display with a 90Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ screen, a wide colour gamut and 1300 nits peak brightness, simply takes the cake. Its 2.5D thin and light body, with the most classic flat frame design, brings a super comfortable grip. Whether holding the screen vertically to play the phone or holding the screen horizontally to play games, it feels surprisingly smooth, almost paperweight, in your hands. JPMorgan Adds Crypto Policy Head After Dimon ‘Ponzi Scheme’ Quip – Bloomberg Law https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/jpmorgan-adds-crypto-policy-head-after-dimon-ponzi-scheme-quip-bloomberg-law/ JPMorgan Chase & Co. has hired a new head of digital assets regulatory policy, less than a month after CEO Jamie Dimon told lawmakers that cryptocurrencies are “decentralized Ponzi schemes.” Aaron Iovine joined the company this week as executive director for digital assets regulatory policy, a newly created role, a JPMorgan spokeswoman confirmed. He was previously head of policy and regulatory for cryptocurrency lender Celsius Network Ltd., whose bankruptcy filing has roiled the digital asset market. JPMorgan is looking to build out its policy ranks in the evolving digital asset space amid increased regulatory scrutiny and a downturn in cryptocurrency values. Iovine didn’t respond to a comment request. Dimon and other JPMorgan executives have been vocal critics of digital assets. Dimon’s “Ponzi schemes” comment came Sept. 21 in congressional testimony, during which he called himself a “major skeptic on crypto tokens.” Takis Georgakopoulos, global head of payments at JPMorgan, told Bloomberg Television last month that he sees “very little” demand for cryptocurrencies as a payment tool. JPMorgan’s Jamie Dimon testifies at Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee hearing on Sept. 22, 2022. Photo: Al Drago/Bloomberg In addition to hiring Iovine, JPMorgan this month posted an opening for a digital assets counsel position with its corporate and investment bank in New York. Stacey Friedman, who has been JPMorgan’s general counsel since 2015, didn’t respond to a request for comment about the New York-based financial services giant’s interest in lawyers familiar with distributed ledger technologies. Iovine will work with JPMorgan’s regulatory affairs group, which a year ago welcomed aboard former Davis Polk & Wardwell senior associate Sharon Yang as a managing director and global head of regulatory affairs. Yang previously served as a deputy assistant secretary for international financial markets at the Treasury Department. Celsius hired Iovine earlier this year from Cross River Bank, a digital asset-friendly regional lender. The company recently brought on Benjamin Melnicki from Robinhood Markets Inc. to be its head of cryptocurrency compliance and regulatory. Iovine, who like Melnicki is also an attorney, spent nearly three years at Cross River, where he led policy and regulatory affairs. Cross River hired Iovine in 2019 after he spent nearly a year as a senior regulatory analyst at the law firm White & Case. During the first quarter of this year, Iovine was part of a Cross River team that lobbied Congress on “general issues focused on financial services, fintech partnerships, and the Paycheck Protection Program,” according to a public filing. Iovine departed Fort Lee, N.J.-based Cross River in February to join Celsius, according to his LinkedIn profile. An online bio touts Iovine’s expertise “exploring the future of financial services while working at the intersection of law, policy, and regulation.” He left Celsius in September, two months after the cryptocurrency rewards-earning and lending platform filed for bankruptcy in New York. The Chapter 11 case has already generated large legal bills for Kirkland & Ellis—court filings show the latter has received at least $3.5 million in retainer payments—and other firms. It has also sparked fraud accusations against London-based Celsius by a former company employee, who the debtor has accused of deception. A bankruptcy docket for the Celsius case shows that Iovine’s name appears on a list of thousands of unsecured creditors with claims against the company. Among them are Ron Deutsch, a former counsel at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison hired last year by Celsius to be its general counsel and head of mergers and acquisitions.

Investor Group, Unions Push Hyundai To Address Child Labor At U.S. Suppliers – Reuters.com https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/investor-group-unions-push-hyundai-to-address-child-labor-at-u-s-suppliers-reuters-com/ NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 19 (Reuters) – A group that works with union pension funds is pressing Hyundai Motor Co (005380.KS) to respond to reports of child labor at U.S. parts suppliers, warning of potential reputational damage to the Korean automaker. SOC Investment Group, which works with union pension funds that have more than $250 billion in assets, sent a sharply worded letter on Wednesday to company chairman Euisun Chung, saying investors were concerned in the wake of a July investigation by Reuters that found child labor at a Hyundai subsidiary in Alabama. In addition, the letter cited a recent federal and state investigation into children working at another Hyundai supplier in the state. read more read more “Child labor and poor workplace health and safety have regulatory and legal repercussions for Hyundai in the U.S. and can cause reputational damage across the globe,” said the letter from the group, which advises on corporate accountability issues. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The letter urged Hyundai’s board of directors to oversee the company’s response and called for several actions including an independent assessment of human and labor rights risks in the supply chain with publicly released results and ongoing monitoring. Reuters first documented child labor practices at Hyundai-owned SMART Alabama LLC earlier this year. Then in August, authorities found children as young as 13 working at Alexander City, Alabama-based SL Alabama, a Korean-operated parts supplier and unit of Korea’s SL Corp (005850.KS), and the company entered in to a settlement with the U.S. Department of Labor. read more Hyundai spokesperson Ira Gabriel said the company appreciated the federal settlement reached between the U.S. Department of Labor and SL Alabama, and noted that the supplier changed its leadership and introduced additional screening of its labor practices. Gabriel also said SMART Alabama severed all ties with a third-party staffing company. “Hyundai will continue to closely review the labor operations of its suppliers to ensure full compliance with all local, state and federal laws,” Gabriel said in an email. SOC’s letter to the company comes after a public rebuke last week from leaders of the United Autoworkers union (UAW) and a September letter to the company from more than two dozen local and national advocacy groups and unions calling for an end to child labor practices. The Washington, D.C.-based SOC, which said the funds it works with hold an estimated 27,000 shares in Hyundai, has taken a more activist approach to call out worker mistreatment and other social issues, including pressing major companies like Apple Inc (AAPL.O) and Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) to make corporate changes, said Dieter Waizenegger, the group’s executive director. “In the U.S. system, oftentimes the monetary risk for labor rights violations is relatively small so it might be seen as a cost of doing business,” Waizenegger said. “I think investors like us need to step out and say, ‘the value of the fines is not capturing your risk even remotely. Your product might be tinged for a long time.'” Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Reporting by Mica Rosenberg in New York and Kristina Cooke in San Francisco Additional reporting by Joshua Schneyer in New York Editing by Matthew Lewis Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

Winglet Tech Expanding STC To Include Citation Sovereign Aviation International News
Winglet Tech Expanding STC To Include Citation Sovereign+ – Aviation International News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/winglet-tech-expanding-stc-to-include-citation-sovereign-aviation-international-news/ Winglet Technology will amend its current Cessna Citation Sovereign winglet supplemental type certificate (STC) to include the Sovereign+, the company (Booth 1828) announced Wednesday at NBAA-BACE 2002. Winglet Technology president Bob Kiser called the amended STC a natural follow on to the original Sovereign STC awarded by the FAA in June 2017 and EASA in April 2020. The company also previously said it would add the Citation Latitude to the STC. To date, Winglet Technology has delivered more than 35 transitional winglet STC kits to Sovereign customers domestically and internationally. “We have seen interest in our winglets from owners of each—Sovereign, Sovereign+, and Latitude—product line,” Kiser explained. The amended STC would apply to a combined fleet size of more than 700 jets. The Sovereign winglets allow the modified aircraft to climb to FL450 at a higher maximum takeoff weight of 30,755 pounds. Additionally, the winglets increase the speed of the aircraft by up to 35 knots at top of climb, as well as a step climb from FL450 to FL470 at a weight that is 3,000 pounds heavier than a Sovereign without the winglets.  Other performance features include a range improvement of up to 340 nm when payload limited, and a weight, altitude, and temperature (WAT) limit improvement of 8 degrees C or 2,000 pounds at departure elevations of 5,000 feet or higher. Second-segment climb gradients are improved by 0.5 to 0.7 percent at the higher mtow. The company also recently announced it delivered its 100th Citation X elipitical winglet kit. The milestone kit was installed by Yingling Aviation in Wichita, which recently became an authorized installer. Winglet Technology was awarded the STC for the Citation X kit in June 2009, followed by EASA approval in 2010. Further, Cessna announced in 2010 that it selected the elliptical winglet’s design for the upgraded production version, the Citation X+, deliveries of which began in 2014. “For Citation Xs that incorporate the STC, the winglets provide a 315-nm-range increase when payload limited over a non-winglet-equipped Citation X,” Kiser said. “The overall consensus among Citation X operators is that the winglets enhance the lateral and directional stability of their aircraft.” This year also marks the 10th anniversary of an elliptical winglet-equipped Citation X’s record flight. The flight from Anchorage International Airport to Miami International Airport—3,479 nm—exceeded the published maximum range of a Citation X without the winglets and logged a record time of seven hours and 11 minutes at an average speed of 482 knots.

#SleepTourism: A Vacay To Catch Your Forty Winks! – Hindustan Times https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/sleeptourism-a-vacay-to-catch-your-forty-winks-hindustan-times/ Post-pandemic, the tourism industry is moving full steam ahead as people try and make-up for lost time. A branch of wellness tourism that is gaining popularity across the world is sleep tourism as people look to get away from their hectic schedules to improve their sleeping habits. Many sleep-focused properties are also popping up to fulfill this demand. In the beginning In early 2020, Zedwell, a London-based hotel became the first sleep-centric property, which featured innovative soundproof rooms and AI-powered mattresses. A year later, Hastens, a Swedish bed manufacturer established the world’s first 15-room boutique hotel called Hästens Sleep Spa Hotel in the Portuguese city of Coimbra. This trend has seen other hotels jump on the bandwagon, too and offer varied sleep-related services like Rosewood Hotels and Resorts in New York, US that recently launched Alchemy of Sleep, a collection of retreats that are especially designed to promote rest and good sleep. What lead to the rise? The pandemic spurned people into collectively prioritising their general mental and physical well-being. Global travel and tour operator Sandeep Arora, head, Brightsun Travel Private Limited says, “Since Covid-19, there has been a focus on our sleep cycles as many people struggled with it. This might be one of the reasons why this trend has picked. Yes, it’s still not prevalent in India but we have travellers whose sole reason for travelling is to rest and get back to a normal sleep routine.” Insomnia, which is a persistent problem with falling and staying asleep, is one of the most common sleeping disorder that people deal with. “A survey conducted by Nielsen with over 5,600 people across 25 Indian cities confirmed that 93% of Indians suffer from sleep deprivation. This has led to a rise in the sleep therapy market in India and sleep tourism is an attempt to serve this demand, which is growing at the rate of 20 percent,” says Dr Arunesh Kumar, head and senior consultant, Sleep Medicine and Pulmonology, Paras Hospitals, Gurugram. “Relaxation and sleep are a basic human need but owing to the fast paced lifestyle, people have to give dedicated time to fulfill these needs. For those in the corporate world, work stress and lack of personal time makes slow travel a priority. Sleep tourism is a form of slow tourism and it is only going to get bigger from here,” says Chhavi Chadha, travel advisor and founder, Bespoke Tailormade Experiences. Adapting Indian market This concept is slowly making its way to India with a few boutique hotels and luxury properties taking the initiative to offer ways to get better sleep. The Belgadia Palace in Mayurbhanj, Odisha is one such place. “We partnered with a luxury sleep solutions company and our mattresses helps with back and neck ache, which is a very common problem among the youth today. We also offer a pillow concierge service where we provide five different kinds of pillows for various ailments and health issues,” says Akshita Bhanj Deo, owner of the Palace, who published their own sleep playlist. At ₹18,000 plus taxes for a couple’s one night stay, the property offers its guests a speed dial to doctors and mental health experts. Yoga, Ayurvedic practices, naturopathy, chakra spa are some other offerings hotels are providing to ensure mental and physical well-being, including sound sleep. Jehan Numa Hotels in Bhopal also has a pillow menu, which “includes five types of pillow such as microfibre, memory foam, buckwheat hull, siliconised fibre, down and feather pillows. We have not received any direct query for sleep tourism, our guests are on the look out for holidays where they can unwind and rejuvenate from their hectic lives,” shares Faiz Rashid, managing director.

Jim Paloucek: Invest In The Health Of Our Community North Platte Telegraph
Jim Paloucek: Invest In The Health Of Our Community North Platte Telegraph
Jim Paloucek: Invest In The Health Of Our Community – North Platte Telegraph https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/jim-paloucek-invest-in-the-health-of-our-community-north-platte-telegraph/ This election, we are presented with an opportunity to make our community better for ourselves and coming generations. North Platte citizens will decide whether to impose a half-cent city sales tax to pay for renovating and expanding the recreation center, relocating and enhancing the skate park, and refurbishing Cody Park pool. The Rec Center was built in 1976. It has served our town well; some major maintenance expenditures loom. But it is well past time to update and expand the facility and broaden the activities and services it can accommodate. The pool is too shallow to meet guidelines for hosting competitive swimming meets, and both leisure and fitness swimmers jockey to utilize the same space. Design and size constrictions limit exercise and fitness activities in the current structure. The proposed expansion of the Rec Center would necessitate moving the current skate park. A skate park committee is already raising funds for relocation and enhancement of the skate park. Cody Pool is nearly a century old. It has outlived its useful life expectancy. Upgrading the pool itself and renovation of the pool house are long overdue. More and more citizens and visitors make use of recreation facilities as part of healthy lifestyles. Modern fitness opportunities appeal more to our children and make it more likely that they will make exercise part of their lives. Up-to-date fitness facilities are a necessary part of any realistic effort to grow our population, appeal to newcomers and get our kids to stay in or return to North Platte. Cities and towns that invest in the fitness and well-being of their citizens make a clear and undeniable statement about the priority placed on healthy living and quality of life. Conversely, localities that scrimp on public recreation and spend the bare minimum, holding a stagnant line on facilities, send an entirely different message. As North Platte looks to the opening of the Sustainable Beef processing plant and development of the rail park, expanded and modernized recreation facilities are a natural part of that future. The small bump in sales tax as a funding mechanism for the proposed upgrades makes far more sense than the alternative of an increase in property tax. Sales taxes are paid by anyone making purchases in the city; property taxes are paid only by those owning real estate in town. It is estimated that 25% of North Platte city sales taxes are paid by people who do not live in North Platte. The half-cent sales tax — 50 cents on every $100 of taxable sales — is expected to generate $3.2 million annually. Those quarters add up and spread the cost of the proposed improvements over a broader base than just upon those living in our city. As you travel about, visit communities and just drive through towns, the quality and beauty of community structures emanate a sense of the level of pride residents have in the places where they live, saying something profound about how much they care about their friends, neighbors, children and grandkids. One cannot help but marvel at the many magnificent courthouses and schools across Nebraska, some built in the depths of the Great Depression or other times of financial uncertainty. People who come together as a community to share the cost of making their community better by building solid and lasting structures where important community activity takes place generate positive legacies and self-perpetuating progress. It is a way of “paying it forward” and demonstrating to those who will come later a path for leaving things better for those yet to come. Exercising, remaining fit and living a healthy lifestyle are vital to enjoying a high quality of life. Any road to a happy existence is enhanced by healthy habits that include regular exercise. One of the most important things communities can do to enhance quality of life is to provide top-notch, modern facilities to promote fitness and health. By voting “yes” on the recreation center ballot question, North Platte citizens can provide that invaluable opportunity to themselves and their neighbors. By voting “yes,” we join the long line of generations who have made sacrifices, large and small, to make their communities better. Two quarters on $100 of taxable purchases is a small price to pay for providing more access to healthy activity and higher quality of life. Please vote “yes” on the recreation center ballot question. Crypto Casino Games: From Metaverse Casinos To Blockchain Bets, Read This First – BeInCrypto https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/crypto-casino-games-from-metaverse-casinos-to-blockchain-bets-read-this-first-beincrypto/ Crypto casino games are on the rise. There are even casinos in the metaverse. Things are moving fast in online gambling. We break it down for you. The metaverse called Decentraland is now home to the Holy Temple Casino. The 42-parcel estate will have one of the largest footprints in the virtual world. Launched by a company called Metaskins, the casino hopes to be a destination for gaming, parties and entertainment. Games include a metaverse lottery and card games including blackjack. Plus there will be scavenger hunts, which can earn players tokens that they can then use for more games. Players can bet against each other or against the house. To play, you need to buy the native token, MANA. Enter here. Source This is not the only metaverse casino. In some other iterations, not only can you bet, you can also purchase land inside some casinos. If a high-revenue blackjack table is on your land, you get a share of the profits. Crypto Casino Games Are Springing up Everywhere An astonishing array of online crypto casino games have sprung up in the past few years. Some of these have been rugpulls, whereby punters hand over money and never see it again. Others are legal, but as always, the odds are stacked against the player and the profits go to the house. In this way, gambling needs to be seen as entertainment only, where you can pay big to be ‘entertained.’ But it might not all be risky and scam-infested. New types of crypto casino games are making themselves known. These use blockchain and Web3 to garner confidence with their audiences. Web3 Crypto Casino Games The idea that anything to do with crypto could make betting safer might seem crazy. However, the development of decentralized blockchain-based Web3 technology is steaming ahead. Platforms are being created that let users own their own data and assets, rather than hand them over to corporates. The blockchain does this in an environment that is open, trustless, decentralized, and transparent. This could address many of the problems of Web2 platforms. Despite gambling being totally legal in a lot of places, people are still putting billions of dollars into unregulated offshore sites. This leaves players as sitting ducks for bad actors. Such sites can disappear overnight, along with players’ crypto. Blockchain Betting Carlos Liang is the CEO of Divvy.bet, a betting site that uses the blockchain. Liang says, “Users of blockchain-based betting platforms have no bad guys to worry about. Every transaction is governed by a smart contract, an immutable, autonomous program that operates according to the terms agreed by the user.” Liang says that rather than handing over crypto to a third party, all players have to do is connect their own crypto wallet to the protocol. “Cutting out the middleman in this way leads to a vastly improved, more frictionless user experience. There’s no more handing over of private data, no more exorbitant withdrawal fees, no more concern over manipulation of spreads by sportsbook companies.” Platforms like Divvy.bet using Web3 protocols give users full transparency into the betting pools they’re using. This allows players to manage their risks more effectively. Says Liang, “You’ll be able to see your funds, have full control over them once bets are settled, and know that there’s enough money in the house to pay you out. That’s a big improvement on traditional sports betting platforms, which are effectively a black box in terms of how your funds are being used and how much liquidity is available.” Other Blockchain Betting Sites Another blockchain crypto betting site is Betswap.gg which is built on the Polygon blockchain. It is a peer-to-peer decentralized sports trading exchange, and uses a native token, $BSGG. The company say they have reworked the traditional betting model to create a betting exchange where users bet against one another rather than against the platform. “Participants can choose to be a better or a bookmaker, with Betswap.gg providing a transparent betting model with no hidden fees and minimal gas fees. Betswap.gg does not require users to go through a tedious onboarding process. All you have to do is connect your wallet, and within minutes, you can start betting. Betswap.gg does not at any point take custody of users’ funds, allowing players to place individual bets directly from their wallets and withdraw their winnings seamlessly, safely, and instantly.” Crypto Casino Games and Influencers As crypto casino games sites have popped up, influencers are being paid to play the games and livestream to their audiences. However, what you find buried deep in the disclaimer is that these influencers have been given the money that they bet, in addition to getting huge payout for streaming the content. Max Maher runs a channel with nearly one million subscribers. He says, “Many streamers do give regular disclaimers talking about the dangers of gambling. However, streamers are being paid absurd amounts of money just to play games on these sites. Streamers are oftentimes given the money that they’re gambling with – they’re not gambling with their own money. This of course incentivizes the streamers to be more reckless in the game.” One Youtuber has anonymously said on Maher’s site that he is paid one million a month to stream casino games. Maher says streamers are falling into temptation and taking the deals regardless of how morally conflicted they might feel about it. It is still the viewers job to make responsible decisions. However, these streams are reaching kids, especially on platforms like Amazon-owned Twitch, which is full of kids. The platform however has started to crack down on unlicensed gambling sites. But, if you do like a gamble, and you want to play online, then you are one search engine inquiry away from millions of options. Or you could just stick to trading crypto in a bear market. That is a gamble in itself. Got something to say about crypto casino games or anything else? Write to us or join the discussion in our Telegram channel. South Korean Police Have Seized $1.3m In Crypto In 2022, Critics Say It’s Not Enough – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/south-korean-police-have-seized-1-3m-in-crypto-in-2022-critics-say-its-not-enough-cryptonews/ Source: Thierry Chabot/Unsplash South Korean police have seized $1.3 million worth of crypto in criminal investigations so far this year, official numbers have revealed. According to Segye Ilbo, the figure is just a small fraction (1.4%) of the total $92 million worth of assets seized by officers in criminal investigations. The data was compiled by the National Police Agency and made public by Choi Ki-sang, a Democratic Party lawmaker. It includes figures from the “first half” of 2022, with a total for the year unlikely to be made public until the middle of 2023. The statistics also showed that officers have asked courts to let them confiscate cryptoassets in 13 separate cases this year. In 2021, officers made 36 such requests – and only made eight requests in the whole of 2020. $1.3 m Seized: Officers ‘Can’t Keep up with Criminals’ Critics claim that the modest figure of $1.3 million shows that the police simply lack the knowledge and IT capabilities required to fight Web3-era crime. They claim that officers are unable to keep up with criminals – with some stating that crypto-powered money-laundering is actually rising sharply in South Korea. The police force last year announced the launch of a network of specialized crypto teams, while the government is set to respond by launching a new crypto regulator. And, more recently, the nation’s prosecution service announced that it is ready to spend big on sophisticated crypto monitoring tools. But despite claims that officers are getting better at stopping crypto-related crime, experts beg to differ. Lee Woong-hyuk, a Professor of Policing at the elite Konkuk University, was quoted as stating: “Money-laundering technology related to cryptoassets becomes more complex and more intelligent as the years go by, but investigative agencies […] cannot keep pace. There may be a need for government-level [intervention] to increase the amount of [illicit crypto seized in criminal investigations] and support investigations in cases related to cryptoassets.”

REUTERS/Kim Hong-Ji YEOJU, South Korea, Oct 19 (Reuters) – South Korean and American troops practiced building floating bridges to ferry tanks and other armoured vehicles across rivers on Wednesday, part of a larger joint military exercise that has angered North Korea. South Korean attack helicopters deployed flares and armoured vehicles blew white smoke screens into the air as main battle tanks, armoured personnel carriers, and other military vehicles crossed pontoon bridges over the Namhan River near Yeoju, south of Seoul. The drill involved armoured “attacking” forces of the South Korean army’s 11th Mobile Division, which is participating in the 12-day Hoguk 22 field exercises, crossing bridges established by South Korean and U.S. engineering units. South Korea and the United States say the drills are defensive, and necessary for deterring the North. read more About 1,000 South Korean and U.S. troops participated on Wednesday, with about 50 tanks and other armoured vehicles, KF-16 fighter jets, Apache and Cobra attack helicopters, and more than 140 pieces of engineering equipment such as floating bridge units, according to South Korea’s defence ministry. Nearby, residents water skied on the river and rode by on riverside bicycle paths. The drills simulated a so-called wet gap crossing, military jargon for any obstacle filled with water, such as a river, said Captain Sean Kasprisin, a company commander in the U.S. Army’s 11th Engineer Battalion, calling it “tough and realistic training”. In a war, such operations might be required if bridges were knocked out by bombing, or if an army wanted to surprise its opponents by crossing away from established bridges or roads. “Developing river-crossing capabilities is a key factor that can make or break wartime operations given the Korean peninsula’s geography with many rivers,” said Lieutenant Colonel Won Seong-hoon of the South Korean 7th Engineer Brigade. South Korea uses an older version of U.S.-made bridging equipment, and one span was assembled using elements from each side, allowing troops to practice combining the different systems. “A lot of rivers can vary in how far across they are, so we don’t know where we need to deploy,” Kasprisin said. “So if that length is too far, then we need to be able to work together.” Despite the tensions with North Korea, U.S. soldiers said they rarely had time to ponder geopolitics during the drills. “The only thing on our mind is the training and making it realistic and effective,” Kasprisin said. Montreal-Made Flight Simulation Technology Honoured With A New Stamp – CBC.ca https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/montreal-made-flight-simulation-technology-honoured-with-a-new-stamp-cbc-ca/ If you’ve flown in a passenger plane, then your pilot was probably trained with a CAE flight simulator, built in Montreal — and now, the 75-year-old company is being recognized for its role in Canadian aviation with a new Canada Post stamp. Canada Post’s Canadians in Flight series is promoting five pioneers in Canadian aviation, including CAE’s full-flight simulators. “I think there is a lot of pride for us to be featured on this stamp,” said Samantha Golinski, CAE’s vice-president of public affairs. “I feel it really roots us in our Canadian heritage as a Canadian company born right here in Montreal.” CAE, which stands for Canadian Aviation Electronics, was founded in 1947 by former air force officer Ken Patrick. Its beginnings were modest: it started with about 13 employees, Golinski said. Now, it has over 13,000 employees across the world, with some 4,000 based at its headquarters in Montreal. Although flight simulators were created during the Second World War, CAE built the first Canadian commercial flight simulator in 1955.  The company says that in 2018, it had 70 per cent of the worldwide market share of flight simulators, making it a leader in the field.  Pilots from airlines across the world fly to Montreal to train on the machines, which are programmed to look like cockpits of aircraft including the Boeing 737, the Airbus 220 and more. The new Canada Post stamp features images of CAE’s flight simulators. (Canada Post) “The CAE flight simulator was an obvious choice for inclusion in this series, as it revolutionized the way pilots learn to fly,” said Canada Post in a statement.  In the 1980s, CAE developed a flight simulator so realistic that not all flight training had to be completed on actual aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration now recognizes an hour in an approved simulator as the equivalent of an hour in the air.  That makes simulation a much more environmentally friendly option for pilot training. “When the pilot flies a real aircraft for the first time, it’s with passengers in the back,” Golinski said.  “When you train on a simulator versus the real aircraft, you save tons of carbon.” In addition to the CAE stamp, Canada Post has also issued new stamps celebrating one of Canada’s first female bush pilots, Violet  (Vi) Milstead, the Canadian-made de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver aircraft, Wallace Rupert Turnbull, the creator of the variable-pitch propeller, and Wilbur R. Franks, who developed the world’s first anti-gravity suit used in combat.
