Whether that be the isolationism of Get Out or the feeling of insignificance in Nope, there’s something scary that any viewer can pull from his films. However, of the three movies that the director has released thus far, nothing is quite as complex as his film Us. Us follows a family who decides to go on vacation in the same area the mother, Adelaide, experienced a terrifying moment in her childhood. Like clockwork, her fears are realized as doppelgangers of her and her family invade their home and try to kill them. Throughout the film, the messages about classicism and consumerism ring with each moment. However, there’s a biblical importance to the film as well, as the number 11:11 constantly pops up, made more relevant by a homeless man holding a sign reading Jeremiah 11:11. Why Is 11:11 Significant In Us? In Us, Jeremiah 11:11 reads as, “Therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.” Narratively this is represented through Adelaide’s duplicate, Red, who represents the evil she and the other doppelgängers brought from the surface world. As they kill their more civilized selves, the lower class literally rise up to make a statement that they are equals to their surface counterparts. At its core, Us is a revenge story in which Red, the true surface dweller, was taken by Adelaide as a kid, and the two switched spots. More than anything, Red wants revenge for the life she was forced to live and wants nothing more than for her new family to live the life she was supposed to have. It is a story about taking back the things that belong to everyone before humanity decided there had to be haves and have-nots. Through Red’s actions, she showed how 11:11 was much more than scripture. How Does 11:11 Transcend Numbers? While 11:11 could be looked at as scripture, the colon between the numbers could also be representative of a mirror, creating a reflection of 11. This is crucial, as mirrors play a large role in the film and could represent the shadow of another, which is what Red and Adelaide describe each other as. The actions of the tethered also help to play into the mirror concept of “11,” as they are meant to mimic what happens above them. 11 could also be viewed as a pairing, which is showcased between Red and Ade’s children, Pluto and Jordan. Both pairs are close to one another, but there’s an untethering that takes place between them. In Pluto’s case, he is killed, whereas Jordan sees what his mother truly is and separates himself from her emotionally when he puts his mask on while looking at her. Through these two characters and their tethered, the entire message of the film, in terms of the bond between a mother, and their child, is shown perfectly. However, it’s so well hidden that audiences may not realize this before it’s too late.

A Practical Guide to the Selection of Energy Efficiency Technologies for Ships was published by the Global Industry Alliance to Support Low Carbon Shipping (Low Carbon GIA), part of the GreenVoyage2050 project. GreenVoyage2050 is a partnership between the IMO and the Norwegian government, aimed at supporting the shipping industry’s transition to a low-carbon future. The intent of the guide is to inform shipowners considering retrofits, with information on operational practices to factor in during the selection of technology. David Connolly, chair of the Low Carbon GIA Energy Efficient Technologies and Operational Best Practices workstream, said transparency of performance is one of the main barriers to the uptake of energy efficient technologies for ships. “We hope that the publication of this guide and its accompanying tool will support shipowners and operators, particularly those with limited in-house technical departments, to assess the energy saving potential of energy efficiency technologies and enable a more informed comparison between different technologies,” he said. According to the IMO, the guide provides methodology for shortlisting technologies based on a set of eight evaluation criteria. It covers similarity, plausibility, accuracy, overall and specific volume orders, repeat orders, consistency and compatibility. The guide is accompanied by an excel-based assessment tool designed to be user friendly and not require specialist technical knowledge. The tool uses a “traffic light” scoring system to help narrow down and rank technology according to the level of confidence shipowners have in their ability to deliver on the vendor’s performance claims. Though the guide is aimed primarily at shipowners and operators, the IMO said equipment and technology suppliers may also use the methodology and assessment tool to increase confidence in their performance claims.

Live Oak police said the body found may belong to a man who was considered a person of interest in the death of a woman found three weeks ago in the same area. The body of Laura Briseno, 50, was discovered Sept. 19 in a ditch near the intersection of Judson and Toepperwein roads. After Briseno’s body was found, police were also searching for a person of interest in her case — her boyfriend 52-year-old Keith Hammond. Hammond’s friends told KSAT on Sunday that they believe they found his body in the underground tunnel minutes after starting their search. They also said they recognized his boots. I got a visa to Russia and I really want to explore Moscow because I might move here. However, I only know a couple people who live there and they’re mostly busy. So would anyone like to show me around and be my makeshift tour guide?” one young woman wrote recently in a Facebook group for expats in Moscow. “I want the full Russian experience (in a good, relatively safe, way),” she wrote—promptly sending most members of the group into a collective meltdown. The woman, who The Daily Beast is not naming to respect her privacy, later clarified in comments to this reporter that she knew her scheduled vacation had “unfortunate” timing but said she’d poured so much money into obtaining a visa she was determined to visit anyway. “It’s a ‘let’s see what happens’ kinda thing,” she wrote. She’s certainly not alone. While Russian social media groups catering to foreigners have largely transformed in recent months from forums teeming with information about upcoming nightclub events into a sounding board for urgent questions about pet relocation services, interrogations at the border, and escape plans—those more sobering posts are often interspersed with queries that appear to expose a major disconnect. “Can’t imagine a better time to visit Russia, hope it goes well for you,” one commentator wrote in response to the post from the woman described above. “There was a lot less people on the subway today as well. Where has everyone gone?” one commentator wrote in a popular Telegram channel for expats in response to a photo of an eerily empty Moscow. Tour operators apparently eager for business amid a downturn frequently post photos of scenes far removed from the war—the Russky Bridge in Vladivostok, “remote destinations” like Altai—while peppering their posts with more stark reminders about the reality of the war. “Currently, international credit cards (Visa, Master Card, American Express) issued outside Russia cannot be used to purchase goods and services in Russia. Western media is hysterical so I just wanted to check in with people who are grounded and connected to reality lol… If I tell anyone here in California I plan on visiting Russia they ask me if I want to die LOL. As if Americans are being held in concentration camps and subjected to public executions,” wrote one American man who later inquired about how to obtain a visa. Some expats also apparently plan to relocate to the country in search of careers. “In light of the recent sanctions, is it still possible to obtain an IT job in Russia as an expat?,” one man wrote in a Telegram channel for foreigners in Russia, inquiring about one of the Russian sectors hit hardest by fallout from the war. Even then, however, the responses they got were a mixed bag of alarm and nonchalantism. “Mobilization is only for people who have served before and not for new recruits,” one expat reassured, insisting Russian defense officials will stick to their word. “It’s official and a kind reminder to you, People who gain Russian citizenship are drafted to war even if they don’t have any military experience (a friend of mine is in this situation),” one Finnish expat wrote. Others floated volunteering in the war as a way to curry favor with the Russian government and resolve their own residency woes. “Those who are willing to join the Russian army for 1 year will be able to get citizenship faster,” one commentator noted in a thread about the possibility of foreigners getting drafted. Marcus Hudson of Let’s Russia, a company that specializes in providing visas for foreigners hoping to visit the country, told The Daily Beast there has definitely been “more apprehension” among prospective travelers after the mobilization order. “When the mobilization hit, that’s when people started asking about safety, for sure. Before that, … nobody asked about safety,” he said, adding that he had not hesitated in advising some travelers to postpone their trips. Many others requested refunds after the mobilization announcement, he said. The majority of those now seeking visas are those with family and friends inside Russia, or other connections that require them to visit. Hudson says he has been candid with other prospective travelers, telling them, “As a foreigner, you should be relatively safe, but I can’t guarantee that at this point.” There are “a few” who still express a desire to visit despite the alarming news coverage about what’s happening there, he said. “The foreigners are believing what’s being reported officially, but there’s a disconnect. I don’t think some of the foreigners looking to go to Russia, especially if they have no connection to Russia, they understand that disconnect,” he said. “They don’t even know it exists and is possible… ‘Wait the government said one thing and did another?’” Even the most “diehard” expats who’d been “very comfortable [in Russia] until this” saw the mobilization order as a “dealbreaker,” he said. “I honestly told people, ‘You know what, with this last announcement you might want to wait. Because you don’t know [what’s going to happen].” “Very, very few people who have no connections [to Russia] are applying for visas,” since Putin’s call-up, he said. The “volume of visas is so low” that a meeting between representatives of the Russian Foreign Ministry and travel companies last month was attended by only three companies, he said, compared to about 15 companies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The majority of those frequenting channels for expats seemed well aware of Putin’s full-fledged war and its myriad ramifications, but some offered what could only be described as cringe-worthy takes. “We all lose are [sic] path in life sometimes but it’s never to late to try again. I urge people to contact Vladimir Putin on the Russian government site and tell him how you fill about the war but be polite and be respectful. stopping the war doesn’t mean your weak it means your strong to admit you made a mistake. I believe Vladimir Putin will do the right thing because he loves his country and he loves his people,” one man wrote in a group geared towards dating and networking in Moscow. Can We Stem The Mental Health Tide During A Cost-Of-Living Crisis? – Independent Education Today https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/can-we-stem-the-mental-health-tide-during-a-cost-of-living-crisis-independent-education-today/ I read two articles recently that left a feeling of helplessness and bewilderment, but also a sense of opportunity. The first was an article by Dr Alex George that stated there had been “enough referrals to children and young people’s mental health services (CAMHS) for children and young people to fill Wembley Stadium in May 2022 alone”. The second came from the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy with similarly grim headlines stating “66% of therapists have reported that the cost-of-living crisis was causing a further decline in the mental health of their clients and 49% reported their clients had already stopped activities such as gym memberships and sports club memberships”. Covid has had a significant impact here, but the cost-of-living crisis is only going to exacerbate these issues and the education sector is going to face the brunt of this with more children arriving in school cold, hungry, and anxious. Already we are seeing a tightening of household budgets on those things that matter most during childhood such as sports clubs, trips and the equipment young people need for a positive school experience. We are seeing a mental health system overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of children being referred for support through increased stress and anxiety disorders and adverse childhood experiences. The basic physical and mental health needs of children are not being met and the situation is only going to get worse. All the things valued by families and children which supports their development, health and education is being eroded. So, now you can see why this might bring up feelings of helplessness…what really can we do to stem this tide? And how did we get to this point as a country where we have children growing up without their basic needs being met so they can be healthy and thrive? However, I do sense an opportunity here. I was reading these articles to better inform the work we do at the Youth Sport Trust to ensure every child has a foundation of positive physical and mental health and it brought me back to the first conundrum, prevention versus cure. Prevention versus cure I believe that schools have an opportunity to help stem the tide of mental health issues by continuing or starting to provide the formal and informal curriculum opportunities that support children’s physical and mental health. We have seen schools implementing programmes such as Active in Mind, a fully funded programme harnessing the strategies of physical activity and lifestyle behaviours to help young people improve mood, reduce anxiety and regulate emotions. This year, schools that have taken the Active in Mind approach have seen: 71% coping better 68% feeling more positive overall 61%more confident 64%more relaxed These students were at risk of mental health disorders and likely to be receiving pastoral support.  Some may have been referred to CAMHS had it not been for their involvement in this type of programme. Boy climbing up wall Harnessing the power of sport The second conundrum is about the place of sport and play and how we harness its power. If it is so important in supporting every child’s right to good health; how do we use this ‘power’ if it isn’t provided, or children haven’t got access to it? If families can’t afford to provide PE kit, pay for sports clubs, or play activities, then those children in our poorest communities will stay inactive and further exacerbate their mental health issues, along with affecting their wider development and education. With growing inequalities around things like mental health we need to give every child access to sport and play, and school is the place to start. We can harness this power to prevent the growing mental health wave from crashing over us all, but the only way we can do this is by reducing the barriers to access and creating opportunities for every child to engage. My final reflection on this topic brings me back to my passion project; Boys Move. When working with some boys on the things that affected their mental health, they were very clear. The things they identified as important to them were, friendships, happiness, family, and having fun. On the other side, they identified feelings of frustration, depression, were worried about bullying and ‘straighteners’, stress, body image and money. However, the one issue that came up repeatedly was ‘anger’. Feelings of anger and not being able to control it, especially when feeling frustrated in school and with experiences in their family. Although the anger and frustration these young people were feeling may be the symptom of any number of issues, the number one issue they spoke about related to poverty. Physical Education and sport have the potential and flexibility to teach young people more than sport-based skills. Done well, they can develop a wide range of pro-social character traits – empathy, integrity, teamwork, collaboration, perseverance. It also provides opportunities to reflect on, identify and control strong emotions. In my opinion, PE is one of the only subjects where pupil voice can truly be heard and directly contributes to the prevention of mental health issues. I do believe there are things schools can do that are within their gift to stem the tide and I do think the desperate situation we find ourselves in with children’s mental health presents an opportunity to think differently about how we tackle the issue of prevention versus cure. Yes, we absolutely need to ensure every child is warm and fed! I also accept schools cannot control this or be accountable for this. But they can be responsible for doing all the things that support good health within the policy and curriculum framework they have, and that starts with every school providing opportunities for every child to move. DEWA Future Lab enables users to hold brainstorming sessions, discuss challenges and develop the best solutions using innovation tools in the virtual world. First Aid and Fire Safety introduces first aid and fire safety procedures virtually. MetaDrone gathers information on solar panels, fixes them and generates reports using VR. DEWA Onboarding allows new employees to learn about the company’s vision and mission virtually. DEWA was one of the first government entities in Dubai to complete the smart transformation of all its services by 100 per cent in 2014. In 2021, DEWA launched a virtual reality generation, production and distribution project for energy and water, which provides a 3D experience of 132/11 kV substations, an interactive training test and a simulation and visualisation model for several devices and equipment in the distribution network. In 2022, DEWA launched a ‘Digital Guide and Virtual Orientation’ tour at its Innovation Centre at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, using augmented reality.

His statement followed a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for “Inverse Cramer ETF.” Jim Cramer to Crypto Investors: Bet Against Me The host of CNBC’s Mad Money show, Jim Cramer, challenged cryptocurrency investors to bet against him in a tweet Friday. Cramer is a former hedge fund manager who co-founded Thestreet.com, a financial news and literacy website. While discussing the Advanced Micro Devices stock (Nasdaq: AMD), he wrote: “As always I welcome people betting against me. I have done this for 42 years. Those who know me know that you would have been betting against Apple at $5, Google since inception, Meta at $18, Amazon at $10, Nvidia at $25, and AMD at $5. I welcome all comers.” Cramer then followed up with another tweet about crypto. Noting that he bought a farm with his bitcoin profits and a boat with ether gains, the Mad Money host proceeded to challenge crypto investors: “I want you to bet against me. You do not do this for 42 years and lose money every year.” Many people have been attacking Cramer for making recommendations that resulted in losing trades. Last year, he praised Ark Investment Management CEO Cathie Wood just before her flagship fund plummeted. The Mad Money host also said in April last year: “We like Coinbase to $475.” At the time of writing, Coinbase Global (Nasdaq: COIN) is trading at $67. ‘Inverse Cramer ETF’ Prospectus Filed With SEC Cramer’s tweets followed a prospectus filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) by Tuttle Capital Management for two exchange-traded funds (ETFs) — Inverse Cramer ETF and Long Cramer ETF. The filing explains: The Inverse Cramer ETF (the ‘Fund’) seeks to provide investments results that are approximately the opposite of, before fees and expenses, the results of the investments recommended by television personality Jim Cramer. Tuttle Capital Management also previously launched an ETF betting against Cathie Wood’s stock picks. Cramer became a fan of bitcoin in 2020 after he spoke with crypto investor and entrepreneur Anthony Pompliano, who convinced him to buy some BTC. The Mad Money host then began advising investors to put 5% of their portfolios in bitcoin. However, concerns over the Chinese bitcoin mining crackdown, ransomware attacks, and tether (USDT) made him dump his BTC for ether in June last year. A few months later, he begged crypto investors to take profits. In October, he said he invested in crypto because “there could be millions of greater fools out there.” In June this year, he said bitcoin could fall to $12,000 and in August, he recommended avoiding crypto and other speculative investments altogether. Over the years, Mr Singh, 34, had grown accustomed to daily discrimination in his hometown of Jalandhar – harassment and beatings doled out by his neighbours, and a family that had largely turned its back on him. But what happened late last year was different. “There were 15 or 20 people who tried to kill me,” he told the BBC from Fresno, California. “I ran away from there and saved my life. But they cut various parts of my body.” The attack left him with a mutilated arm and a severed thumb. Mr Singh’s escape set him on a journey that took him through Turkey and France. Eventually, it led him to the US-Mexico border, nearly 8,000 miles (12,800km) away, where he crossed into California to begin a new life in the America. He is not alone – for years, the arrival of Indian migrants in the US has been slow but steady, amounting to dozens or hundreds each month. This year, however, the figures have spiked. Since the beginning of the 2022 fiscal year that started last October, a record 16,290 Indian citizens have been taken into US custody at the Mexican border. The previous high of 8,997 was recorded in 2018. Experts point to a number of reasons for the increase, including a climate of discrimination in India, an end to pandemic-era restrictions, a perception that the current US administration is welcoming to asylum seekers and the ramping-up of previously established smuggling networks. While some migrants are coming to the US for economic reasons, many are fleeing persecution back home, said Deepak Ahluwalia, an immigration lawyer who has represented Indian nationals in Texas and California. The latter group range from Muslims, Christians and “low-caste” Hindus to members of India’s LGBT community who fear violence at the hands of extreme Hindu nationalists, or supporters of secessionist movements and farmers from the Punjab region, which has been shaken by protests since 2020. Conditions for many of these groups have deteriorated in recent years, international observers say. Tough decisions For Mr Singh, the decision to leave his country wasn’t an easy one. He first considered moving to another Indian city, but feared that he would be treated just as badly. “The culture is not open-minded for gay people,” he said. “Being gay over there is a big issue.” India only decriminalised gay sex in 2018 and same-sex marriage remains illegal. His brother soon put him in touch with an India-based “travel agency” – part of a sophisticated and expensive smuggling network that took him first to Turkey – where “life was very tough” – and then to France, where he briefly considered staying but was unable to find work. The entire trip took him just over six months. Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Indian nationals being processed by US immigration officials after crossing the border on 26 September Eventually, his “travel agent” arranged for him to join a small group of Indians headed to the US, where many – Mr Singh included – had family members. “He charged us a lot of money,” Mr Singh said. “[But] from France he got me to Cancun, and from there to Mexico City and north.” A difficult journey Immigrants such as Mr Singh often see the US as “the ultimate gateway” to a better life, said Mr Ahluwalia, the lawyer. The enormous distances involved, however, make the trip to the US extremely challenging. Traditionally, Indian migrants who arrive at the US-Mexican border use “door-to-door” smuggling services, with journeys arranged from India to South America. They are often guided the entire way and travel in small groups with their fellow countrymen who speak the same language, rather than individually or with only family members. These networks often begin with India-based “travel agents” which outsource parts of the journey to partner criminal groups in Latin America. Jessica Bolter, an analyst at the Washington DC-based Migration Policy Institute, said that the number of Indian migrants is also rising as a result of a “ripple effect” that takes place when those who have used these services successfully recommend them to friends or family back in India. “It naturally expands and draws more migrants,” she said. “Of course, that doesn’t happen without migrants wanting to leave originally.” The experiences of Manpreet – a 20-year-old from Punjab who asked that only his first name be used – are typical of those who have taken the southern route in the past. A vocal critic of India’s ruling BJP (Bharatiya Jannata Party), he fled the country after being persecuted for his political beliefs. “From Ecuador I took a bus to Colombia, and from Colombia I took a bus to Panama,” Manpreet recalled in an interview with the BBC from California. “From there, via a boat, I [went to] Nicaragua and Guatemala, and then Mexico and entered the US.” Even guided by seasoned smugglers, the trip to the border is often one that is fraught with dangers, including robberies and extortion at the hands of local gangs or corrupt authorities or extreme weather, injuries and illness. These dangers were highlighted in 2019, when a 6-year-old Indian girl from Punjab was found dead in the scorching desert near the border town of Lukeville, Arizona – a case that made headlines in India. It was later reported that she died in temperatures of over 42 C (108 F) after her mother left her with a group of other Indians to go search for water. Most often, it begins with what US officials term a “credible fear interview,” in which they must convince authorities they face persecution if returned home. “This first step is the most important,” Mr Ahluwalia explained. “If he [the officer] deems there is no credible fear, your case is never going to move forward. That is very catastrophic.” If an asylum officer believes these fears are credible, would-be asylum seekers are likely to be issued a notice to appear before an immigration judge who will consider their request. The process is lengthy – with wait times of several years now the norm across the US – with no promise of a positive outcome. Mr Singh, for his part, has been in the US since late June. At the moment, he is saving up money to hire a lawyer. While his long-term future in the US is by no means guaranteed, and his journey was long, it was better than the alternative, he said. “I would always fear for my life,” he added. “Since I have been here, I have never felt such a thing.”

Getty Images Stock futures are lower Sunday night as the markets come out of a tumultuous week and traders look ahead to key reports coming in the next week that can offer insights into the health of the economy. Futures connected to the Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 0.6% to 29,175 points. S&P 500 futures dropped 0.7% to 3,626.25 points, while Nasdaq 100 futures slipped 0.8% to 11,014.25 points. Market observers generally consider the week ahead as the kickoff to earnings season, with four of the world’s largest banks – JPMorgan, Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley and Citi – reporting Friday. PepsiCo, Delta and Domino’s are also among companies reporting next week. Inflation will also take center stage as new monthly Consumer Price Index data comes Thursday morning. It will follow a week of whiplash for market participants. The first half brought a relief rally that pushed the S&P 500 up more than 5% in its largest two-day gain since 2020. But jobs data that economists say will keep the Federal Reserve on a path to continue raising interest rates and OPEC+’s decision to slash oil supply rattled investors, diluting wins later in the week. When day trading ended Friday, the S&P was up 1.5% compared to where it started the week. The Dow and Nasdaq were up 1.5% and 0.7%, respectively. Still, the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq had the first positive week in the last four. All remain down substantially so far in 2022, however, and the Nasdaq is less than 1% away from its 52-week low. Meanwhile, the 2-year Treasury yield rose 6 basis points, closing at 4.316%. One basis point is equivalent to 0.01%. “The direction of the stock market is likely to be lower because either the economy and corporate profits are going to slow meaningfully or the Fed is going to have to raise rates even higher and keep them higher for longer,” said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer at Independent Advisor Alliance, on Friday. “Given the conditions that we are operating under, we believe it’s prudent to begin preparing for a recession,” he added. “The talk of a shallow recession that is now the narrative-du-jour strikes us as eerily similar to the ‘inflation is transitory’ narrative of last year.” Last week brought heightened concerns that corporate earnings will show the ugly side of a surging dollar as Levi Strauss became the latest to cut guidance due to sliding international sales. Core inflation will rise again, Allianz’s El-Erian predicts Allianz Chief Economic Adviser Mohamed El-Erian predicts core inflation will continue rising while headline inflation comes down to about 8%. He told CBS’ “Face The Nation” on Sunday that inflation core inflation will eventually come down. But he expects new Consumer Price Index data coming Thursday to show it rose again month over month. It’s an office that has been plagued with low morale and inept customer service, especially during the pandemic. We recommend newcomer Misty Spears over Gloria Martinez, a retired deputy district clerk and veteran. The office is in need of an overhaul. In the primary, incumbent Bexar County District Clerk Mary Angie Garcia faced seven challengers, most of whom have worked with her — a huge red flag. Spears, a Republican, is a litigation paralegal with a Texas Tech University accounting degree whose work in the legal profession spans more than two decades. Her education and experience should empower her to address the problems that plague the department. That she hasn’t worked in the office should make her an asset. “I don’t want to do office politics or play favorites” she told us. “It’s paramount that we improve the morale.” Martinez, who told us she retired in 2019 after 33 years experience, said she wants to make changes at the department, but her ideas lack substance an we aren’t convinced she can make the changes that are necessary. It’s concerning that Martinez received the endorsement of Garcia, the source of myriad problems. Further, we find it odd that Martinez told us Garcia asked her to retire after less than six months in her role. Martinez said she’s not sure why, but noted “I don’t hold grudges.” Still, why the departure? Would Garcia play a formal or informal role in the department if Martinez is elected? Records that should be digitized and accessible are not. That’s another problem Spears wants to solve. She also told us she wants to ensure that records are secure and accessible and streamline the department through a fiscally conservative lens. A district clerk’s team under Spears’ leadership is promising. The Bexar County Clerk’s Office holds government documents that record many parts of our lives: birth and death certificates, marriage licenses, divorce forms, court records, military discharge papers, land records, real property, and others. The team also maintains the records of commissioner’s court, two probate courts, mental health court, auxiliary jail court, 15 county courts at law, and several others. And it maintains the Spanish Archive records from the 1700s representing Bexar County’s foundation. A competent leader in this office will be adept at records management, prioritize customer service, and embrace emerging technologies and best practices. Morale is also important in this office. For Bexar County Clerk, we recommend Lucy Adame-Clark over Republican challenger Richard A. Gold. We see no reason for a change because Adame-Clark hits all the high marks for this office. She says she has plans to keep improving the office. Adame-Clark, first elected in 2019, is working to improve customer service and technology. She’s also taking a deep look at employee pay. And she plans to continue her innovative “Straight to You – Records on the Run” mobile satellite record unit. Gold’s background make him a competent candidate. He holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He said he wants to bring transparency, professional leadership and fiscal accountability to the office. He retired after serving 27 years in the county, including 20 years as a records manager. Gold told us, if elected, one area of focus will be streamlining and decreasing operational budgets. Voters should vote to keep Adame-Clark. Register to vote no later than Tuesday, request a ballot by mail by Oct. 28 and vote early Oct. 24 through Nov. 4. Election Day is Nov. 8.

Conditions on the Chicago Marathon’s relatively flat course were ideal Sunday, with Sisson — who won the 10,000 at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials last summer — finishing second to Ruth Chepng’etich. The Kenyan repeated as the Chicago champion with a time of 2:14:18, 14 seconds off the world record set by Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei in the 2019 Chicago Marathon. Sisson finished in 2:18:29, taking 43 seconds off the American record set by Keira D’Amato in January in Houston. Before D’Amato, the record had stood for 16 years; now it has been lowered twice in 10 months, something D’Amato expected. “There’s a number of American women that are also gunning for that record, so I think if I don’t lower it myself, it’s not going to be mine for very much longer,” she said before the Berlin Marathon two weeks ago. D’Amato, who did not run in Chicago, joined Sisson at the finish line, along with Deena Kastor and Joan Benoit Samuelson — women who held the American record before her. “It’s amazing,” Sisson said, according to NBC Chicago. “The women standing here today, they’ve all accomplished so much, so just to be amongst them is an incredible honor.” Sisson said she wasn’t aware that the record was in reach until she was close to the finish line. “I just was given instructions to go off my pacers and not think about time at all, so I had no clue what pace I was running until, I think, like a mile to go,” she said. “A few people told me to pick it up, so I thought, ‘Oh, I must be close to either breaking 2:20 or the American record,’ but I didn’t know which one.” The Chicago race marked Sisson’s return to the marathon after she dropped out of the 2020 Olympic trials after 22 miles despite being a favorite. It closed in 1970, undone in part by San Antonio leaders’ neglect of West Side institutions and the poverty of the community it was a part of. But the theater reopened in 1984 with help from city government under then-Mayor Henry Cisneros, and it has since become part of the larger Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center campus, which runs along South Brazos Street between Guadalupe and San Fernando streets. But nearly 40 years after its re-emergence — and a lot of work to rejuvenate the theater — Cristina Ballí, executive director of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, feared the Guadalupe again would have to close. On a weekday in summer 2020, Ballí was standing in her home office — working remotely because of the COVID pandemic, like many thousands of other employees in San Antonio at the time — when a city liaison called with the bad news. San Antonio officials planned to withhold $115,000 from the amount typically granted to the Guadalupe in the city’s annual budget. Travel and workplace restrictions stemming from the pandemic had cut deeply into the city’s tourism fund, which includes money for the arts, and city leaders had to make draconian budget reductions. “That was the moment when the bottom fell out,” Ballí said. “That was the biggest moment of crisis.” But the arts nonprofit managed to survive without the city support. And now it’s getting a leg up. This month, the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center received $261,986 from the city through a grant program to support the arts, funded with federal COVID-19 relief dollars embedded in the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. The arts complex received more than any other local arts organization. The grant will make a huge difference to the center’s bottom line, Ballí said, adding, “We’re still catching up from our pre-COVID days.” The Guadalupe is one of 46 arts nonprofits to receive ARPA funding. Nearly 140 individual artists also were awarded federal dollars. City Council approved the grants Sept. 29 in a 9-1 vote. The program mirrors similar grants the city disbursed earlier in the pandemic with money from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act. Inching back to normal In all, $4 million went to nonprofits and $1 million to individual artists. Artists received grants of up to $7,500. The grant awards to nonprofits varied greatly. San Antonio Mastersingers received the smallest amount — $3,261. Larger grants went to institutions such as the American Indians in Texas at the Colonial Missions, which got $256,310; Say Si, $256,128; the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, $245,873; and the Witte Museum, $225,149. Before COVID-19 struck, the Guadalupe brought in revenue of about $500,000, mostly through ticket sales, class tuition, rental fees and merchandise sales. In 2020, that fell by more than half to around $200,000. The nonprofit is inching its way back. It saw $341,000 in income from Jan. 1 through July, Ballí said. The COVID-19 relief grant will help bridge the gap and allow the organization to make a few building and programming upgrades. The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center offers dance and music classes in traditional mariachi and conjunto music as well as Mexican folklorico and Spanish flamenco dance. It hosts what it says is the nation’s longest-running Latino film festival. It puts on visual art exhibitions and is home to a bookstore focused on Latino literature that holds readings and other events. On a hot day in late September, the Guadalupe’s music studio — which includes a recording studio and an array of instruments — was ready for kids to arrive. In just a few hours, it would fill with children arriving after school for music lessons. The studio would remain full until late that night. The studio was largely empty at the height of the pandemic. “We serve lots of working-class, middle-class Mexican Americans who don’t necessarily attend other programs at some of the other cultural institutions,” Ballí said. “And if we’re not here, they don’t get their programs.” The shows go on At the corner of Hemisfair near the Southtown neighborhood, Frank Villani bustles around the Magik Theater from room to room. The theater was humming with activity. Employees were building scenery backstage or rehearsing in the basement for an upcoming performance. All the props are handmade, from the stuffed version of a “Frozen” character to tigers and lambs and skeletons. It takes as much as $150,000 just to keep the lights on at the theater, said Villani, the theater’s CEO. When COVID-19 hit, Magik Theater lost $620,000 in ticket revenue. This year, it has generated $240,000 in ticket revenue — a far cry from the $700,000 in sales Magik Theater made before COVID-19. And organization don’t expect sales to fully recover next year either. The theater employs 31 people now but furloughed about 17 employees early in the pandemic. When it began bringing workers back, it instituted a 20 percent pay cut across the board so it could to return everyone to their jobs. The theater was able to eventually scrap the reduction and retroactively pay employees the money they’d lost, Villani said. Magik Theater received a variety of federal relief funds throughout the pandemic. It received a loan from the Paycheck Protection Program, federal aid disbursed by Bexar County and other grants. “The theater would not be around” without the federal relief, Villani said. The $150,591 that Magik Theater is receiving from the city’s ARPA grant will replace some ticket revenue and allow the organization to pull off a full season of performances. In the “before days,” school buses would line up out the front door. Now the field trips are less frequent, and the theater has cut down on the number of shows it stages during the week. In the theater’s basement, actors rehearsed for an upcoming show, “Eddie & Vinnie.” Running from Oct. 15 to 28, it’s about a young boy with dyslexia, one of the first such shows ever, Villani said. “So much of what we do is about letting young people see what the world can be,” he said. New Rooms Coming To Wilderness Lodge Villas! – Disneytouristblog.com https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/new-rooms-coming-to-wilderness-lodge-villas-disneytouristblog-com/ Walt Disney World has released a look at the new rooms coming to the original Wilderness Lodge DVC villas and announced details about the room refurbishment project. This post shares concept art, photos of the fixtures and furnishings, the timeline for work, my commentary, and more. Disney originally revealed these room renovations for the Boulder Ridge Villas at Wilderness Lodge way back in December 2019 at the Disney Vacation Club Condominium Association Annual Meeting. During that, DVC indicated that Boulder Ridge was receiving a “full refurbishment” in 2020. Per that schedule, Grand Floridian was set to receive a minor refreshes last year and the Polynesian and Beach Club Villas would each receive soft goods refurbishments in 2022. Obviously, a lot changed only a few months after that meeting. Walt Disney World paused construction projects for months, and was slow to restart them–including at the resorts. While that delay played a role, the bigger cause of delay was prioritization of the Polynesian and Grand Floridian projects, which were deemed more urgent for several reasons. In any case, the overdue and much-needed Boulder Ridge Villas room reimagining was placed on the backburner. Disney Vacation Club leadership emphasized that this project was time slated to occur, and permits were filed over the summer. Finally, work started to happen within the last few weeks. Oddly enough, it hasn’t been officially announced by Walt Disney World nor is there a construction advisory on the official site for the Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. This isn’t entirely unprecedented. Earlier this year, Disney closed the Garden Wing of the Contemporary for the ‘Incredibles Injection’ room redos, and never announced anything. Regardless, the Boulder Ridge project is currently scattered across a handful of rooms on the fourth floor and fifth floor, with a range of room types represented. It’s unclear whether this these are test or model room reimaginings occurring ahead of the project getting started at full speed. Adding to the oddness, Disney isn’t keeping this overhaul a total secret. Concept art flashed on-screen at the D23 Expo last month and there’s now a two-page spread with more artist renderings and photos in the Fall 2022 issue of Disney Files magazine. This project is a big deal for DVC Members and fans of Wilderness Lodge, so it’s a bit weird that Disney isn’t publicizing it more. We’re here to do exactly that, starting with a look at the concept art and details DVC released in Disney Files… This fall, crews will begin refreshing accommodations at Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge (the lodge’s first Disney Vacation Club Resort, which opened in 2000). Updated kitchens (including new, single-height island countertops with stools), bathrooms, living spaces (including behind-the-sofa, fold-away beds) and more will give Deluxe Studios, and 1- and 2-bedroom villas a more vibrant – though still whimsically woodsy – look. Refurbishment work will take place in waves, with the first wave scheduled for completion by this winter, and all accommodations aiming for completion by Spring 2023. Here’s a sneak peek at what else is in store. In 1- and 2-bedroom villas, vibrantly colored patterns along the bottom of living room drapes and vases displayed on built-in shelves flanking new pull-down beds are among the many places in the re-imagined living spaces to spot hidden Mickeys. Goofy practices the perfect cast while Mickey tries to keep up with Pluto in one of the new pull-down bed’s two custom works of art. Among the new details are wilderness travel posters framed in the dining area of 1- and 2-bedroom villas, placing Mickey and friends in wilderness settings with names that make us smile, from “Whispering Canyon” (a nod to a restaurant next door at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge) to “Lake Elias” (with Elias being Walt Disney’s middle name, and his father’s first name). Main bedrooms in 1- and 2-bedroom villas have their own treasure to discover, from such Disney fan-familiar places as Grizzly Peak (of Disney California Adventure fame) included in drapery map patterns to Chip and Dale elegantly silhouetted on a throw pillow. Donald Duck and his nephews hike through the woods on artwork adorning the fold-away bed behind the Deluxe Studio sofa. When opened, the bed reveals artwork of the nephews fast asleep while Uncle Donald makes a misstep at Geyser Point. Mickey and Minnie explore the water-filled wilderness in a mural above the main bedroom’s bathtub and in framed bedroom artwork. On the kid-sized bed tucked beneath the Deluxe Studio TV, there’s more art–a forest on the outside and Chip ‘N Dale mural on the inside. Attached to the hidden kid-size bed is a set of built-in drawers and a pair of neatly tucked stools, adding more storage and seating to Deluxe Studios. Vibrantly colored Deluxe Studio headboards feature both sconce lighting and reading lights. As we’ve previously mentioned, we saw the model room almost two years ago, and it’s substantially similar to this concept art. The layout and poster art was identical, with the biggest differences that I can recall being in some of the furniture and upholstery colors, patterns, and textures. The big thing is that this emulates the approach of the Saratoga Springs and Riviera rooms, which were more recently replicated at the Polynesian and Grand Floridian Villas. No surprise there, as Disney Vacation Club leadership previously indicated this would be the new room blueprint going forward. Functionally, we have zero criticism about this decision. If there’s one thing that Imagineering really got right with Disney’s Riviera Resort, it’s the rooms. Those designs make significant strides in space-saving design, while adding innovative features like the pull-down Murphy sleeper that is somehow both a comfortable couch and a comfortable bed. Those new rooms seem like the culmination of a lot of lessons learned by DVC over the last decade–iterating on past successes and disregarding past failures–into something that coalesces perfectly. Disney Vacation Club has even indicated that guest satisfaction scores have increased by 20% among guests who have stayed in new rooms at Saratoga Springs. If anything, this undersells the functional improvement of those rooms–they’re much more than 20% better than their predecessors. (That’s not quite how guest satisfaction scores work, but still.) When it comes to their substance, the new rooms coming to Boulder Ridge will be an unequivocal upgrade over the current rooms. There’s no question whatsoever about that. I’m also cautiously optimistic these new rooms will offer thematic enhancements. The style of the Copper Creek studios was a mixed bag for me, with too much of a mismatched style meant to give it a cottage or cabin feel. It got a bit too contemporary and cutesy, with an inappropriate shabby chic look. These Boulder Ridge rooms look much more cohesive, with Disney art set in the great outdoors and featuring classic characters (I love the nods to the Junior Woodchucks). Although not directly referenced, there’s a lot that evokes the U.S. National Parks (all of the art, including the poster style) and Native American culture (patterns on the carpet, throw pillows, drapes, and vases). All of this gives the room a lot of textural depth and personality, while never being overly busy or chaotic. The rooms still look relatively relaxed and subdued, with calming colors. (About the only exception to this is the multicolor headboard in the Deluxe Studio–they jury is still out on that one.) This is also without taking into consideration the current rooms at Boulder Ridge, which are really showing their age. If you want a better idea of how the current Boulder Ridge rooms look, below is our room tour video: Personally, I don’t mind the current rooms at Boulder Ridge. They’re older, a bit tired, and lacking the usability improvements of their newer counterparts, but they have thematic integrity and are appropriately rustic. There are obvious improvements that could be made, but they’re better than many resorts. I’m almost certainly in the extreme minority with this view, but I’d take the current rooms at Boulder Ridge over those at Copper Creek. The latter are superior from the perspective of functionality, but feature an aesthetic that is trying a bit too hard to be chic and trendy. With that said, I’d hazard a guess that most Walt Disney World guests favor Copper Creek’s rooms by a wide margin. I’m also guessing that the current rooms at Boulder Ridge have become a liability, depressing the resort’s popularity. One thing we’ve discussed recently is how the “secret has gotten out” about Wilderness Lodge. It went from having a fan following and great discounts–but not much mainstream appeal–to one of Walt Disney World’s most hard-to-book hotels and one that often is undiscounted. Part of this is probably the crowd-pleasing new rooms (pictured above) and the addition of Storybook Dining at Artist Point. Another thing I’ve noticed in the last couple of years thanks to sales data from our friends at DVC Resale Market is Boulder Ridge’s comparatively lower prices. It’s the least expensive Disney Vacation Club resort at Walt Disney World on the secondary market, with both Old Key West and Saratoga Springs ahead of it. Not only is Boulder Ridge the lowest-priced DVC resort at Walt Disney World, but its average resale price offers the biggest percentage savings over buying direct, at 40% off. (That’s $81 off per point!) Moreover, the per point difference between Boulder Ridge and Copper Creek is a massive $44. This school enrichment program is delivered by Washington County Extension & Outreach/4-H with a lesson each month. During the program students learn about a new fresh fruit or vegetable each month. They are encouraged to try it as a class while they learn how the food is grown and harvested, how to purchase it in the stores, ways it is good for their body and ways to it eat. First grade students also focus on a new health lesson each week regarding hand washing, exercise, food groups, and hygiene. TryDay started in October with apple taste tests and lessons on bravery to try new things. The TryDay Healthy Living Program is supported by Stewart Elementary Boosters. Students receive a coupon for the Food of the Month supported by Washington Fareway and HyVee, Freeman Foods in Wellman and JWs in Kalona.
