Speaking for the first time since the country began its most recent round of weapons tests late last month, the North Korean Foreign Ministry denounced the United States for “unwarrantedly” referring Pyongyang’s ballistic missile launches to the United Nations Security Council. It defended its actions as “just counteraction measures” against the exercises. The United States, South Korea and Japan since August have been conducting military maneuvers to demonstrate their readiness to work together in the event of a conflict with the North. While the allies say the drills are defensive in nature, Kim Jong Un’s regime has long viewed them as hostile acts and used them to justify its weapons development and nuclear program. “North Korea’s consistent and persistent claims that its missile launches are in response to joint U.S.-R.O.K. drills is part of North Korea’s long running strategy of establishing equivalence between their illicit provocations and U.S.-R.O.K. joint military exercises,” said Go Myong-hyun, a senior fellow at the Asan Institute of Policy Studies in Seoul, using an abbreviation for South Korea’s official name, the Republic of Korea. Go added that the North Korean Foreign Ministry’s statement Thursday “echoes precisely the talking points intended to inculcate the perception that the drills and provocations are equivalent, when in fact they are not.” Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said North Korea’s missile launches “absolutely cannot be tolerated.” “This is the sixth time in the short period, just counting the ones from the end of September,” Kishida said Thursday. China’s Ambassador to the U.N., Geng Shuang, told the Security Council on Wednesday evening local time that North Korea’s tests “did not exist in isolation” but were rather a response to U.S. military activity in the region. The U.N. response should not merely be about pressuring Pyongyang, Geng said, adding that U.S. deployment of military assets was to blame for “creating tension” and the idea that North Korea’s launches were because of Security Council inaction was “totally incorrect.” There has been a flurry of activity this week between the allies’ drills and North Korean ballistic missile tests, which violate U.N. Security Council resolutions. The reciprocal actions point to rising tensions as the United States, South Korea and Japan work more closely together to guard against North Korea’s nuclear and weapons development. With a new South Korean conservative president who is taking a harder line toward the North, U.S. and South Korean militaries resumed drills this summer for the first time in five years. North Korea’s recent rounds of tests began on Sept. 24 as the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan arrived in South Korea to participate in the exercises. On Tuesday, as drills involving the American carrier wrapped up, North Korea test-fired an intermediate-range missile over Japan for the first time since 2017. In response, the United States, South Korea and Japan conducted air, sea and land drills, including rare missile exercises by the U.S. and South Korean militaries and deploying the Reagan back out to the waters east of North Korea. On Thursday, North Korea test-fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea off its east coast. Their telltale fins pop up all about us—a pod of at least dozen. Our whale-watching boat, the Sea Lion, is one of a handful nearing them at a safe distance in the waters of the San Juan Islands nearly into Canada. “August and September are when we see them the most,” explains Haleigh Yang, a naturalist guide with San Juan Safaris. “The orcas like it here.” So do the visitors who board ferries at Anacortes to arrive in the San Juan Islands. They come to see the magnificent whales. They also enjoy the art galleries, wine cellars, theaters, spas, and many other attractions of this versatile destination. The islands receive more than a million visitors annually. Located northwest of Seattle, the San Juan Islands are a loose archipelago of more than 170 islands in the Salish Sea, loose because some islands are so small that they appear and disappear with the tide. They are the remains of a mountain range that connected Washington to Canada’s Vancouver Island. The Pig War, actually a dispute about who owned the San Juan Islands, lasted from 1859 to 1871 and eventually determined the American sovereignty of the San Juan Islands. The American Camp at the island’s south end showcases several wood-framed buildings, an earthen fortress, and magnificent, windswept views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Dark amber prairies blanket the hills leading to South Beach, the longest public beach in the San Juan Islands. In the island’s north region, the British Camp features a blockhouse, restored formal English garden and parade ground. A short hiking trail loops through woods and alongside Garrison Bay. Roche Harbor Resort Near the top of San Juan Island, the village of Roche Harbor is a world unto itself. In the resort community, pastel-colored houses rests on a small hill. The historic Hotel De Haro, three restaurants, shops and spa surround the main pier. Madrona Bar and Grill is an ideal place to watch the activities of the harbor: kayakers preparing for saltwater adventures and yachtsmen readying for departure. But this new bill sets a precedent that could be replicated by other states. Driving the news: Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) on Tuesday signed a bill that authorizes more than $108 million in pandemic relief money to OU’s medical center. But the money — which would be used for cancer care, pediatric behavioral health care and other infrastructure — would be withheld if the Oklahoma Children’s Hospital did not stop providing gender-affirming medical care to minors. Medical services related to gender identity had previously been available for those up to age 24, according to OU Health’s website. The Oklahoman had reported that about 100 children receive gender-affirming care at the children’s hospital. What they’re saying: “It is wildly inappropriate for taxpayer dollars to be used for condoning, promoting, or performing these types of controversial procedures on healthy children,” Stitt said in a statement. “Medical decisions belong to patients, their parents, and their doctors,” Tamya Cox-Toure, executive director of the ACLU of Oklahoma, said in a statement. “Yet politicians, attempting to appeal to their base during an election year, have continued their attacks on bodily autonomy by coming between those directly impacted and the care they need and deserve.” Of note: Three medical groups sent a letter to the Justice Department this week to investigate increasing threats of violence against children’s hospitals and staff providing gender-affirming care. In the lawsuit filed this week in Dallas County court, O’Neal said that he’s sunk $14 million into building the Drive Nation training academy — which has helped nurture young NBA stars such as Cade Cunningham and Tyrus Maxey — but that the airport never followed through on promises to build a thriving development around it. That’s left participants in the sports complex with few nearby options, even though the airport is benefiting from athletes and families flying in from around the world, lawyer Victor Vital said. Even with no ties to North Texas, O’Neal settled in Southlake after his career ended and in 2017 opened the Drive Nation complex, a 91,000-square-foot training facility that has several basketball courts and hosts tournaments and training for youth teams. “This is really for young people to sharpen their skills and to learn life lessons too,” O’Neal said in an interview. The facility hosts about 60,000 people a year, mostly for tournaments and camps on the weekends. About 500 kids and teenagers train there regularly. O’Neal claims he hasn’t made anything back on his $14 million investment at Drive Nation, which was financed by the $168 million he made during his NBA career. The facility has thrived and expanded into hosting youth volleyball training as well as a charter school focused on student-athletes. Drive Nation’s youth basketball travel team, playing in the Nike Elite league, has hosted a handful of NBA players, including Cunningham of the Detroit Pistons, Maxey of the Philadelphia 76ers, and RJ Hampton of the Orlando Magic, as well as a handful of high-profile college players. In the lawsuit, O’Neal said he nearly built Drive Nation in Keller to be the anchor of a development there, but was lured by DFW Airport commercial development chief John Terrell with the promise that the complex would be at the center of a mixed-use development featuring hotels, restaurants and retail next to one of the world’s busiest airports. Drive Nation signed a lease, agreeing to pay the airport $145,000 to $445,000 annually for 40 years on 16 acres, about half of which is undeveloped but can be used for sporting events. The Kentucky Board of Elections’ website, which posts information on how to register to vote, was also temporarily offline on Wednesday, but it was not immediately clear what caused that outage. The board of elections’ website is also managed by the Kentucky government, though the hackers did not specifically list the board as a target. The websites in Colorado, Kentucky and Mississippi were sporadically available Wednesday morning and afternoon as administrators appeared to try to bring them online. It’s an example of the type of digital disruption or distraction that US officials and election officials are preparing for ahead of the November midterm elections. Websites like that of the Kentucky Board of Elections are not directly involved in the casting or counting of votes, but they can provide useful information for voters. “The [hacking] campaign does not appear to specifically target U.S. elections infrastructure, though election-related websites can be indirectly or directly impacted through the broader operation,” the Elections Infrastructure Information Sharing & Analysis Center (EI-ISAC), a nonprofit-backed threat-sharing center, said in an email to election officials obtained by CNN. The hacking group claiming responsibility for Wednesday’s website outage is known as Killnet and stepped up their activity after Russia’s February invasion of Ukraine to target organizations in NATO countries. They are a loose band of so-called “hacktivists” — politically motivated hackers who support the Kremlin but whose ties to that government are unknown. The group also claimed responsibility for briefly downing a US Congress website in July, and for cyberattacks on organizations in Lithuania after the Baltic country blocked the shipment of some goods to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad in June. Multiple states have confirmed intermittent connection issues to their websites following suspected cyberattacks, according to the notice from EI-ISAC, which works closely with the federal government on election security. By Wednesday afternoon, the websites of Mississippi and Kentucky, including Kentucky’s Board of Elections, were back online. The Colorado state website was still struggling to load. The Colorado governor’s Office of Information Technology said it took a state web portal offline “due to a cyberattack claimed by an anonymous suspected foreign actor.” “All other State of Colorado websites and essential state government services are online and available,” the statement said. The state has a temporary website to provide Coloradans with information on state services, the statement said, adding that there was no timetable for the original website’s restoration. CNN has requested comment from US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), which works with states on election security. “Some Kentucky.gov state websites have been experiencing abnormal traffic, resulting in intermittent interruptions,” Carlos Luna, general manager of Kentucky Interactive, a contractor that manages Kentucky government websites, said in a statement to CNN. “We continue to investigate and are working with the Commonwealth to mitigate the issue.” A Mississippi government spokesperson did not return a request for comment by publication time. Even though the deal still may take months to close, a trial set for Oct. 17 is almost certain to be put on hold. That means there’s no pressure for Musk to submit for pre-trial questioning about his complaints that Twitter executives hid the number of robot and spam accounts among the platform’s more than 230 million users. The deposition was scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. at a law firm’s offices in Austin, Texas. The people declined to be identified discussing a confidential matter. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that the deposition has been delayed, citing unidentified sources. The New York Times reported, also citing unidentified sources, that Musk’s representatives had unsuccessful talks with Twitter in recent weeks about reducing the price of the deal before he renewed his original proposal. Musk sought a discount of as much as 30%, which would have valued the company at roughly $31 billion, but Twitter rebuffed the proposal, the newspaper said. Discussions in the last week concerning a discount of about 10% ultimately did not move forward, the Times reported. Delaware Chancery Judge Kathaleen St. J. McCormick said Wednesday that since neither side has yet asked to pause the case, she’s pressing ahead with the upcoming trial. In a securities filing earlier this week, Musk offered to go forward with the deal if Twitter’s suit was put on hold. Lawyers for both sides are still hammering out details on a final resolution of the suit as banks and other investors dust off the deal’s original $12.5 billion debt-financing package. The lenders are led by Morgan Stanley. Other investors include Oracle Corp. Chief Executive Officer Larry Ellison. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 19.4% from the week before, with 323,859 cases reported. With 8.71% of the country’s population, Texas had 6.79% of the country’s cases in the last week. Across the country, 10 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before. Wichita County reported 176 cases and no deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 320 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 37,592 cases and 699 deaths. You’ve heard me talk about for four years now on what I pride myself on as far as being a starting pitcher, and that’s definitely eating as many innings as I can. I feel like that 200 mark is a big one for starting pitching, especially nowadays.” Indeed, in the modern game pitchers need to go max effort to navigate lineups because unlike earlier eras, hitters one through nine can take you deep at any time. At the same time teams are less willing to let pitchers face the lineup the third time through. The result has been fewer and fewer 200 inning seasons since the Diamondbacks came into the league 24 years ago in 1998. That year there were 52 such seasons in MLB. Last year there were four.  Coming into play today there were just five pitchers who had already reached 200 innings in 2022. Two pitchers crossed that threshold in this game. Corbin Burnes came in with 199 innings, and pitched three scoreless innings before coming out of the game. Kelly reached the milestone in the sixth inning. The last time a Diamondbacks pitcher went 200 innings was in 2018, when Patrick Corbin and Zack Greinke did it.  Things didn’t look promising for Kelly when the game started. He began the first inning with a 10 pitch walk to Christian Yelich, who was later caught stealing on a great throw from Carson Kelly. He gave up a single to Willy Adames, but then got the next two batters, using 20 pitches to get through the inning. He needed 18 more pitches in the second inning, working around a one out walk and a stolen base.  Kelly was more efficient in the third and fourth innings, needing just 23 pitches to retire all six batters. Milwaukee got to him in the sixth for one  in the fifth. A single by Keston Huira and double by Victor Caratini gave the Brewers second and third with one out. A ground out to third by Tyrone Taylor scored the line run Kelly gave up today.  Scroll to Continue In the sixth inning a base hit and a groundout put another runner in scoring position for the Brewers. But Kelly struck out Luis Urias and Caron Kelly threw out Willy Adames trying to steal third for the inning ending double play.  That was all for Kelly, as Torey Lovullo turned it over to the bullpen with the game tied at 1-1. Kelly’s final line was was Six innings, four hits, 1 earned run, two walks and seven K’s. He finishes the year 13-8, 3.37 ERA. He led the team in starts with 33 and innings with 200.1, earning the nickname “The Mainstay”.  The offense started slowly today thanks to Burnes electric stuff dominating the first three innings. He didn’t allow a baserunner while striking out five. Burnes 243 strikeouts led the National League in 2022. But Craig Counsel pulled him after three innings and went to the bullpen.  The D-backs immediately pounced on reliever Aaron Ashby. Pavin Smith singled with one out and advanced to second on a fielding error by the left fielder. One out later Christian Walker singled him home for his 94th RBI of the season.  Josh Rojas doubled to the wall in right center but Walker was thrown out at home trying to score on a great relay throw from Adames.  The D-backs had a runner in scoring position in each of the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings but failed to score. It looked like those missed opportunities would come back to haunt when Sean Poppen gave up a go ahead solo homer to Rowdy Tellez in the eighth, breaking the 1-1 tie. Poppen had come in when Caleb Smith had to exit with a left elbow injury with two outs. After the game Torey Lovullo said Smith would receive imaging tomorrow. Smith had become a very effective long man out of the bullpen and it would be a big loss for the team’s 2023 plans if he were to require surgery.  Despite that setback, the D-backs would not be denied. Walker lead off with a single, his third hit of the game. Josh Rojas then came up and launched his ninth homer of the year for the 3-2 lead. Corbin Carroll went yard next, upping the lead to 4-2. Kevin Ginkel closed out the win with a scoreless ninth for his first save of the year. The Diamondbacks finish on a high note and a season ending record of 74-88, a 22 win improvement over 2021.  After the game Torey Lovullo said about the late comeback:  “Our guys are intense, they don’t shut down”.   With a bevy of young players that arrived this season and performed well, and more on the way, the team is on the right path and if they can address their bullpen issues should have a good chance to finish over .500 in 2023 and compete for a playoff spot.

This is a continuation of an extreme fear streak that started more than one month ago, back during late August. Historically, investors have usually maintained fearful sentiments during periods of high volatility in coins such as Bitcoin, while stretches of low volatility have accompanied times of greed. However, while this recent run of extreme fear took place, the price of BTC mostly stayed constant around the $19k mark. The talks follow a rare request for emergency aid last week from the Havana government after Cuba suffered an islandwide loss of electricity, floods and extensive damage after its western third took a direct hit from Ian as it made its way toward Florida. Neither side has specified what kind of aid is being discussed. The State Department official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive diplomatic efforts. But the talks mark a new stage in sporadic efforts to communicate following President Donald Trump’s rollback of the normalization of ties that began in 2015, when Barack Obama renewed U.S. diplomatic relations with Havana’s communist government more than five decades after they were severed. President Biden campaigned on a pledge to relax the renewed sanctions and isolation of Cuba imposed by Trump, who also reinstated Cuba’s U.S. designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. Biden’s administration has made only minor adjustments to the relationship, however, including allowing increases in the number of commercial U.S. flights to the island, loosening restrictions on sending remittances to family members by Cuban Americans, and permitting certain categories of U.S. citizen to travel there. Recently, the administration reversed an earlier refusal to issue a Treasury Department license to a Maryland-based producer of electric scooters and bicycles to privately owned companies in Cuba. The license was granted under an exception to existing trade restrictions for reasons relating to environmental quality. Cuba’s appeal for humanitarian assistance comes as the island — even before the storm and a deadly fire that struck a large Cuban oil storage facility in August — has struggled with a major economic crisis, including shortages of food and fuel. Last week brought the first significant street protests, in the capital and other cities, since major anti-government demonstrations were put down with a violent security response in July 2021. Last week’s protests appeared in large part to be a response to the islandwide blackout and general economic strife, although chants of “freedom” were also heard. The demonstrations have reportedly died down as power has been restored to some areas, although frequent blackouts continue to occur. There are also sporadic cuts to internet service, variously blamed by Cubans on the electricity problem and possible government intervention. Physical proximity, with only 90 miles separating the two countries, has meant that any hurricane affecting Cuba is likely also to take aim at the United States. Havana has rebuffed U.S. offers of assistance following previous major storms. In 2005, the United States rejected a Cuban offer to send physicians to New Orleans to assist in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The Biden administration offered unspecified technical assistance following an August fire sparked by lightning at a fuel storage facility in the city of Matanzas, east of Havana. The massive blaze continued for days and added to overall fuel shortages on the island. The Cuban government said it was grateful but did not follow up on the offer beyond the reported acceptance of some firefighting equipment. The two government have also held talks related to the record number of Cubans seeking admission to the United States across the Mexican border. In April, according to unpublished U.S. Customs and Border Protection figures obtained by The Washington Post, CBP was on pace to apprehend more than 155,000 Cubans during the current fiscal year, nearly four times the 2021 total and a twelvefold increase over 2020.

Juan David Ortiz was charged with capital murder of multiple persons, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful restraint expose to serious bodily injury and evading arrest. Ortiz allegedly killed Melissa Ramirez, Claudine Anne Luera, Guiselda Alicia Hernandez and Jannell Ortiz in September 2018, according to court documents. A fifth victim identified as Erika Peña was able to escape from Ortiz and sought help from a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper. This ultimately led to Ortiz’s arrest, according to authorities. Alaniz said that throughout this process of the case in court, he and his office have been in close contact and in private meetings with the victims’ families. “Most recently, after we won the last motion to suppress regarding the search of the truck, I met with all the victims’ families and with the other victim that escaped,” Alaniz said. “We had a discussion as to the direction of the case. They unanimously requested of me to remove the death penalty and seek life without parole.” As the DA, Alaniz said he had the discretion as to the direction of the case. However, taking the families’ request into consideration to heart, he made the decision to go ahead and inform the court that he would be abandoning the death penalty in lieu of life without parole. “I believe that the evidence for guilt has always been and is very strong,” said Alaniz, taking into consideration the last two rulings where the prosecution won the motion to suppress the confession and the motion to search the vehicle. “Justice is different for every person. The families of the victims in this case had unanimously reached the consensus that it would be better for Ortiz to spend the rest of his days locked in a cage like an animal than to have a date with the executioner.” A relative pointed out that giving the death penalty to Ortiz would’ve been “letting him off too easy,” Alaniz mentioned. “My job as a prosecutor is to be the instrument to bring justice to the victims and the families,” he said. Alaniz and his team of attorneys will still try the case with the same zealousness and determination to bring justice for the victims in this case, he said. Logistically, this changes a lot of things. Typically, a death penalty case takes two months. Now, it could be less than two weeks when and if Ortiz is found guilty. The punishment is automatic life without parole, Alaniz said. Jury selection is set for Oct. 21. Opening statements are expected to begin on Nov. 28 in Bexar County.

(AP) — A California man who lost his home in a wildfire last month has sued a wood products company at the center of the blaze, accusing it of failing to address the risk of a fire starting on its property. The fire started near the Roseburg Forest Products Co. mill on Sept. 2 in the small town of Weed near the California-Oregon border. It eventually burned more than six square miles (15.5 square kilometers), destroyed 118 buildings and killed two people. California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection is still investigating the cause of the fire. The mill produces its own electricity from wood remnants, a process that produces hot ash that is then sprayed with water from a machine. The company says it is investigating whether that machine, which it says is supplied by a third-party, failed to cool the ash enough, which could have started the fire. Tuesday, lawyers for 61-year-old Robert Davies sued the company, saying it did not make sure the machine was adequately designed, inspected and maintained — making the shed where the ashes were stored “a tinderbox awaiting a spark.” Instead of fixing the machine, the lawsuit says the company relied on its employees to put out fires, resulting in “a number of unreported fires at the facility.” “It begs the question, what was done from a safety standpoint to be able to address these fires that had occurred by using the correct technology and systems that would not rely solely on humans to be able to intervene,” Frank Pitre, one of Davies’ lawyers, said during a press conference on Wednesday. A spokesperson for the company declined to comment. The company has set aside $50 million to support victims of the fire, and so far it has compensated more than 300 people. That included Davies, who received $5,000. The lawsuit says this wasn’t enough to compensate him for the loss of his home of over 30 years and everything inside it. Pitre said he doesn’t believe the fire was a freak accident, saying multiple fires occurred on the site leading up to the blaze, known as the Mill Fire, which began on Sept. 2. He added the area was notorious for high winds during certain parts of the year. Terry Anderlini, another lawyer representing Davies, said Wednesday that the fire should never have happened. “We’re here to bring this forward and get to the truth of the matter,” Anderlini said. Warmer temperatures and drier conditions as a result of climate change have sped up the cadence of wildfires in Western states, scientists say. Wildfires have devastated communities in California, which, in the last five years, has seen the largest and most destructive fires in history. The Mill Fire started less than a quarter mile (0.3 kilometers) from the Weed City Fire Department and burned for 11 days. It prompted Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency in Siskiyou County and resulted in federal grant money to fight the blaze and support residents. Davies, who previously worked for an engineering company that contracted with the U.S. military, said he was in his home with his 25-year-old son when the fire started. After hearing helicopters flying from above, Davies walked outside and saw smoke coming over a hill. Within less than an hour, the smoke reached his house, he said. Davies and his son left their home with laundry baskets and clothes. Among the items left behind in Davies’ house were Disney collectibles he planned to will to his 36-year-old daughter. Davies said his family moved to the house in the mountains at least in part to avoid crime in larger cities. “In a way, it was kind of like a fairytale,” Davies said. “We never had to worry. Design Population based prospective cohort study. Setting The Nurses’ Health Study II (NHSII) and the Growing Up Today Study (GUTS I and II) in the United States. Participants 19 958 mother-child (45% boys, aged 7-17 years at study enrollment) pairs with a median follow-up of 4 years (interquartile range 2-5 years) until age 18 or the onset of overweight or obesity, including a subsample of 2925 mother-child pairs with information on peripregnancy diet. Main outcome measures Multivariable adjusted, log binomial models with generalized estimating equations and an exchangeable correlation structure were used to account for correlations between siblings and to estimate the relative risk of offspring overweight or obesity defined by the International Obesity Task Force. Results 2471 (12.4%) offspring developed overweight or obesity in the full analytic cohort. After adjusting for established maternal risk factors and offspring’s ultra-processed food intake, physical activity, and sedentary time, maternal consumption of ultra-processed foods during the child rearing period was associated with overweight or obesity in offspring, with a 26% higher risk in the group with the highest maternal ultra-processed food consumption (group 5) versus the lowest consumption group (group 1; relative risk 1.26, 95% confidence interval 1.08 to 1.47, P for trend0.001). In the subsample with information on peripregnancy diet, while rates were higher, peripregnancy ultra-processed food intake was not significantly associated with an increased risk of offspring overweight or obesity (n=845 (28.9%); group 5 v group 1: relative risk 1.17, 95% confidence interval 0.89 to 1.53, P fortrend=0.07). These associations were not modified by age, sex, birth weight, and gestational age of offspring or maternal body weight. Conclusions Maternal consumption of ultra-processed food during the child rearing period was associated with an increased risk of overweight or obesity in offspring, independent of maternal and offspring lifestyle risk factors. Further study is needed to confirm these findings and to understand the underlying biological mechanisms and environmental determinants. These data support the importance of refining dietary recommendations and the development of programs to improve nutrition for women of reproductive age to promote offspring health. Introduction Childhood obesity is rising at alarming rates in the United States.12 According to the National Center for Health Statistics and National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, the prevalence of overweight, obesity, and severe obesity among children and young people aged 2-19 years have increased from 10.2%, 5.2%, and 1.0% in 1971-74 to 16.1%, 19.3%, and 6.1% in 2017-18, respectively.1 Childhood obesity increases the risk of major chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease,3 diabetes, and cancers,4 and premature death.5 One of the potential contributors to the obesity epidemic among children and young people is the unhealthy Western style diet characterized by increased consumption of ultra-processed foods, which constitutes more than half of all energy intake among young people and adults in the US.67 Ultra-processed foods are extremely palatable, energy dense, convenient, and shelf stable products made from refined and inexpensive ingredients using a series of industrial processes.8 Ultra-processed foods contain various types of additives, including stabilizers, artificial flavors, and artificial colors, and contain little, if any, whole food ingredients.89 Further, ultra-processed foods generally have higher sugar, sodium, and saturated fat content compared with less processed foods.89 Consistent evidence has linked ultra-processed food intake to excess body fat, overweight, and obesity in adults101112 and children.1314 Because the development of obesity can be attributed to the combined influence of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors,15 maternal diet might influence offspring’s predisposition to obesity and diet choice.161718 While Strohmaier and colleagues and Chen and colleagues have linked a healthy pregnancy diet to a reduced risk of obesity in children,1718 Dhana and colleagues showed that a healthier maternal lifestyle during offspring’s childhood and adolescence was associated with lower obesity risk in offspring.16 However, the specific impact of maternal ultra-processed food consumption during these two critical periods on offspring’s body weight remains unknown. We used cohorts of mother-child pairs to test our hypothesis that maternal intake of ultra-processed food during offspring childhood and adolescence (that is, child rearing period) was positively associated with the risk of incident overweight or obesity in offspring at age 7-18 years. We then analyzed the association between consumption of ultra-processed food during peripregnancy and offspring risk of overweight or obesity. Understanding these associations might help advance dietary recommendations and inspire actionable policies to improve maternal and offspring health. Methods Study population We included longitudinal data from mothers and their offspring who participated in the Nurses’ Health Study II (NHS II) and the Growing Up Today Study (GUTS I and II), respectively. The NHS II enrolled 116 429 female registered nurses aged 25-42 years when established in 1989, with questionnaires mailed biennially to gain information on relevant medical history and risk factors.19 From 1991, a validated semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire was also mailed every four years.20 The GUTS I cohort was established in 1996 when 16 882 children (aged 8-15 years) of NHS II participants completed the initial questionnaire on health and lifestyle and were followed up every year between 1997 and 2001, and biennially thereafter. In 2004, 10 918 children (aged 7-17 years) of NHS II participants joined the extended GUTS II cohort and were followed up in 2006, 2008, and 2011, and biennially thereafter. The study was approved by the Committees on the Use of Human Subjects in Research at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Voluntarily returning the self-administered questionnaire was considered informed consent in both cohorts. Participants A total of 18 920 mothers and 27 783 children were matched between NHS II and two GUTS cohorts and were eligible for our study (fig 1). We excluded mother-child pairs with implausible maternal energy intake (600 kcal/day or 3500 kcal/day, 411 mothers to 559 children) and pregnancy during follow-up (846 mothers, 1220 children). Additionally, we excluded mother-child pairs when children had missing baseline height and weight, or when they were overweight or had obesity at baseline (3110 mothers, 6046 children). The final analytic cohort included 19 958 children born to 14 553 mothers.
