Artists Can Now Fight Back Against AI with Nightshade
Artists have been mostly defenseless when it comes to having their work used by AI tools like Dall-E, Stable Diffusion or Midjourney. There are some outstan...
This new data poisoning tool lets artists fight back against generative AI
The tool, called Nightshade, messes up training data in ways that could cause serious damage to image-generating AI models. Nightshade exploits a security vulnerability in generative AI models, one arising from the fact that they are trained on vast amounts of data—in this case, images that have been hoovered from the internet. Nightshade messes with those images.

If @Adobe restricts use of an artist's name in prompts for GAI content, why am I seeing "Michael Whelan" in image titles? Is the platform enforcing Terms of Use or shifting the burden to artists to report when their name, reputation and art are being exploited? pic.twitter.com/f25cytc4Nt— Michael Whelan (@whelanmichael) August 15, 2023
338 results for Greg Rutkowski.91 results for Frank Frazetta.4 results for Alexander Jansson.@adobe is charging $80 for an AI generated Beksinski. Why is ANY of this on your store? pic.twitter.com/NxK8puodkF— Wetterschneider (@Stretchedwiener) August 14, 2023
Hey @adobe Can you please remove my name from you database ? 👀If you want to make money from me and other artists, I guess our monthly subscriptions to your software should be enough, right ? 🙃 pic.twitter.com/IYrIZ3Bjel— Anato Finnstark 𒉭 (@AFinnstark) August 18, 2023
So @adobe , now you take money out of this? This is my name used to generate and to sell those pictures in your stock. No way this is ok. pic.twitter.com/KmCP0Amwwm— Marc Simonetti (@kemar74) August 18, 2023
Say @Adobe why do you think it's okay to use the names of living and still working artists in your stock, selling images leeching off these artists? I guess I'll be cancelling my sub. I'm done with your BS #createdontscrape #artistagainstai pic.twitter.com/vIzNqx8DVX— Iris Compiet (@iriscompietart) August 18, 2023

This is all just splendid isn’t it. And entirely expected, sadly. Cheers Adobe. (Thanks to @rob__mccallum for the heads up) pic.twitter.com/VdFaNETZkK— Ian McQue (@ianmcque) August 18, 2023
Hi @Adobe just curious, what is this page full of hideous AI imagery "in the style of Abigail Larson" that's obviously not my work doing on your site? pic.twitter.com/16LgwmGd7F— Abigail Larson (@Abigail_Larson) August 18, 2023
Hey @Adobe why is it the artist's responsibility to report their own work being stolen and added into your imagebase? You insipid clowns. pic.twitter.com/nZrWltcEmI— Steve Stark 🌕 (@sstarkm) August 15, 2023
Karla is a Puerto Rican artist who works on Films (MCU, ILM,HBO), Games, TV, Covers, Fine art, etc. Passionate advocate for better artist industries+ rights ✌️
2 MONTHS LATER...@adobe is still profiting off the work of artists. https://t.co/HDCQHA40Tp pic.twitter.com/exoIZklDWD— Wetterschneider (@Stretchedwiener) August 14, 2023
Adobe Stock. Go there. Type a well known artist. Say, a concept artist like Craig Mullins. You wouldn’t think his work would be licensed on Adobe Stock. It’s not. BUT AI generated versions along with the prompt used by some typist with the artists name in the prompt. Unacceptable pic.twitter.com/Ukn6TtqX7P— Rob McCallum (@rob__mccallum) August 18, 2023
Dear @Adobe You mentioned your AI images uses the Adobe stock library only and guarantees the artist gets a royalty. Then can you explain why my name is in your library and there are a bunch of AI generated images with my name without my consent or prior knowledge? Please RT pic.twitter.com/UgfKmHpg6C— Victo Ngai 倪傳婧 (@victongai) August 14, 2023
hello @adobe, could you explain why my name can be found in your AI generated adobe stock images without my permission? https://t.co/tOaEEmoBan— Loish (@loishh) August 17, 2023
