EU official says Twitter abandons bloc's voluntary pact against disinformation
A top European Union official says Twitter has dropped out of the bloc's voluntary agreement to combat online disinformation. European Commissioner Thierry Breton tweeted Friday that Twitter had pulled out of the EU’s disinformation “code of practice” that other major social media platforms have pledged to support. But he added that Twitter’s “obligation” remained, referring to the EU’s tough new digital rules taking effect in August. San Francisco-based Twitter responded with an automated reply, as it does to most press inquiries, and did not comment.

The trouble with computers: you get exactly what you ask for. Ask a robot waiter to serve table eight’s food immediately and it might just throw it. An AI that’s trying to earn you money might decide the best way is to sell your house. It’s not enough to tell machines what to do; you…

Attached: 1 image This week, I got pitched by a PR guy who expressed admiration for a book I wrote. Except I didn't write the book and when I Googled the title, no one else had either. I emailed the guy back: "What did you think of the book? 😉" That led him to admit that "someone used ChatGPT" and it gave a bio for me with this invented piece of information. The guy was embarrassed but I found it fascinating. ChatGPT hasn't learned how to tell the truth but it has learned plausibility. Beware, early adopters!
