Twitter says its image-cropping algorithm was biased, so it's ditching it
Twitter has largely abandoned an image-cropping algorithm after determining the automated system was biased. Some users complained it had a preference toward showing pictures of white people in previews of tweets.

“I absolutely admire the work of Professor Keith Hawton who noted that the positive predictive rate of suicide risk assessment is about 5%. In other word suicide risk assessment fails 95% of the time.”

Well, I was booked to go on @BBCRadio4 PM to challenge @johannhari101 about assertions made in his new book. He has pulled out for "personal reasons", so I'll just leave a thread about my concerns about his use of sources. I hope someone else will raise these questions with him.— Matthew Sweet (@DrMatthewSweet) January 6, 2022

How Can Democrats Win the Digital Wars? - Offline with Jon Favreau
Tara McGowan, one of the Democratic party’s most innovate digital strategists, joins Jon to talk about ways Democrats are fighting back against the MAGA Movement’s control of the internet. They discuss what impact, if any, political advertising has in an online era, why John Fetterman’s tweets are so damn good, and why they’re fed up with Democrat’s annoying fundraising emails.

Stephen Fry on The Internet
Stephen Fry on The Internet
Prepare for the internet of the future, or face the worst of science fiction's predictions: comedian, actor, writer and Hay Festival president Stephen Fry sets out his argument for how and why we should reform our World Wide Web, part of our 30 Reformations series. Our 30th anniversary coincided with the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his Theses to the door at Wittenberg. So we invited international thinkers at our festivals around the world to propose their reformations of institutions and authorities, re-imagining the world. You can watch the full hour-long event, including the Q&A with BBC Click's Spencer Kelly over on our Hay Player now: https://www.hayfestival.com/hayplayer/ We'll be releasing other reformations daily from now to the end of the year - subscribe and be the first to see them.

Interactive Map: US Abortion Policies and Access After Roe | Guttmacher Institute
The abortion landscape is fragmented and increasingly polarized. Many states have abortion restrictions or bans in place that make it difficult, if not impossible, for people to get care. Other states have taken steps to protect abortion rights and access. To help people understand this complex landscape, our interactive map groups states into one of seven categories based on abortion policies they currently have in effect. Users can select any state to see details about abortion policies in place, characteristics of state residents and key abortion statistics, including driving distance to the nearest abortion clinic.
