The portal will include the Nebraska voluntary self-exclusion program and other problem gaming resources. The Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission encourages the public to exercise responsible gambling practices and to learn the signs of problem gaming ahead of full casino operations. The development of the Nebraska voluntary self-exclusion program is another step to enhance industry best practices to prevent problem gambling throughout the state. “We recognize the excitement and anticipation for expanded gaming in Nebraska,” said Nebraska Racing and Gaming Executive Director Tom Sage. “Having mechanisms in place to mitigate the effects of harmful problem gaming is key to regulating a professional gaming industry. Oregon Business – County-By-County Employment Data Shows Quick Job Growth In Portland Area – Oregon Business https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/oregon-business-county-by-county-employment-data-shows-quick-job-growth-in-portland-area-oregon-business/ Breakdown of August jobs numbers shows flattened unemployment rates and more Oregonians returning to the workforce Unemployment remained flat in six of Oregon’s 36 counties last month — but grew in the remaining 30, according to data released by the Oregon Department of Employment Tuesday. Between August 2021 and August 2022, total nonfarm employment rose in all six broad regions across Oregon, according to the state’s county-by-county employment data report. The five Portland-metro counties saw 2.7% year-over-year job growth. Employment also grew at a relatively fast pace in the Central Oregon region (2.6%), the Willamette Valley (2.3%), and the Coast (1.8%). Growth occurred at a slower pace in Southern Oregon (1.1%) and in Eastern Oregon (1.1%), which also have the state’s highest seasonally adjusted unemployment rates. Unemployment was 5.5% in Grant County last month; Klamath County reported 5.3% unemployment, whereas Curry and Josephine Counties each reported 5% unemployment. But Wheeler County, also situated in Eastern Oregon, registered the lowest unemployment rate in the state, at 2.7%. Other counties with notably low unemployment rates in August were Hood River (2.9%), Sherman (2.9%), Washington (2.9%), and Benton (3.0%). Last week’s jobs report showed unemployment had ticked up to 3.7% in August compared with 3.5% in July. But the economy also added jobs in August, suggesting the increased unemployment rate is to due an uptick in the number of job seekers entering the market. Overall, Oregon has the same average unemployment rate as the rest of the country — and the state’s unemployment rate remains low by historical standards. In Oregon, nonfarm payroll employment grew by 9,300 in August of this year, following an upwardly revised gain of 13,000 jobs in July. Monthly gains in August were largest in government (+3,800 jobs), leisure and hospitality (+1,900), construction (+1,400), professional and business services (+1,000), and manufacturing (+900) sectors. Other services lost 800 jobs and financial activities lost 700 jobs. They were the only major industries to cut over 500 jobs. The gains in total nonfarm payroll jobs in July and August, reached a record employment total of 1,974,700 jobs in August, which was 2,500 jobs above the pre-pandemic peak reached in February 2020. Local government positions defied typical seasonal pattern, as local schools experienced fewer summer job reductions than normal, adding jobs in both July and August. This trend followed the first six months of the year, when local government employment averaged nearly 12,000 fewer jobs than in 2019, before the COVID-19 recession. With fewer short-term job reductions in July and August of this year, local government education employed a total of 108,600 in August, which was 2,500 above its level in August 2019. The Sept. 14 jobs report showed the private sector has also regained all of the jobs it lost during the pandemic recession. Despite inflation, raising interest rates and fears of recession, it appears Oregonians are working, and businesses are hiring. To subscribe to Oregon Business, click here.

Business News: B.C. Companies Fined Over Social Media Posts – CTV News Vancouver https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/business-news-b-c-companies-fined-over-social-media-posts-ctv-news-vancouver/ A consultant, a mining company and a CBD distributor have been fined in B.C. for failing to disclose when they paid for promotional social media content, including posts shared by influencers. The BC Securities Commission released details of three similar settlement agreements on Tuesday. In each case, a company called Stock Social was hired to conduct “investor relations activities” including creating advertorials and social media posts. In cases where this kind of content is created and distributed at the behest of a company, the financial markets regulator requires a publicly-traded company “to clearly and conspicuously disclose” that fact, the BCSC notes in each of the announcements of the settlements. In the first case, Chad McMillan, a consultant hired by a virtual reality company called ImagineAR Inc., was fined $10,000. The content he hired the marketing company to produce included an advertorial that “was written in the style of a news article designed to look and read like objective journalistic content” as well as posts shared by six influencers in 2017 and 2018. In the second, John-David Alexander Belfontaine, the CEO of a CBD food and beverage distributor called Phivida Holdings Inc, was fined $10,000 for similar activity. In this case, the BCSC found that Belfontaine personally reviewed advertorials and Facebook posts but did not “correct the deficiencies” by directing the marketing company to add the required disclaimer. In the third, a $35,000 fine was handed down. MGX Minerals Inc. and CEO Jared Michael Lazerson hired the marketing company in 2017 to create six advertorials and to engage 17 influencers to promote the content on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. “The advertorials were written to look and read like objective journalistic content. Some of them inconspicuously directed readers to a disclaimer on another website,” the settlement agreement reads. “Others indicated a fee had been paid, but did not identify who paid, or who was paid, for the content. Some indicated MGX as the source, but stated the author was a third party and that the content was not reflective of the company’s opinion.” The company was fined $25,000 and Lazerson was fined $10,000. In all of the cases, those involved admitted the misconduct, pre-empting the need for the matter to go to a hearing.

Oprah-Backed Healthy Chain True Food Kitchen Rakes In $100 Million For Expansion Plans – Green Queen Media https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/oprah-backed-healthy-chain-true-food-kitchen-rakes-in-100-million-for-expansion-plans-green-queen-media/ Oprah visits True Food Kitchen | Courtesy 3 Mins Read True Food Kitchen, the Oprah-backed healthy restaurant chain founded by Dr. Andrew Weil in 2008, says it has raised more than $100 million to fuel its growth plans. The latest investment round was led by HumanCo and Manna Tree, and included participation by existing investor Centerbridge Partners. Unlocking ‘tremendous’ potential “This investment enables us to truly broaden our mission to help well-being through more accessible, real food,” Christine Barone, CEO of True Food Kitchen, said in a statement. “This capital will unlock a tremendous amount of potential for our future, allowing us to expand our footprint, launch smaller formats, and ultimately allow more people across the country to experience great tasting food that is truly good for you.” Oprah Winfrey and True Food Kitchen CEO Christine Barone at the True Food Kitchen in Pasadena, California. | Courtesy With 42 locations operating across 17 states, True Food Kitchen says the demand for healthier food is behind the fundraising. Pulling from his integrative nutrition background, Dr. Weil aimed to fill a dining void—a fine dining experience with healthy, seasonal foods at the center of the plate. He succeeded, earning early support from high-profile investors including media mogul Oprah Winfrey. She invested in the chain in 2018. “Bringing people together over a delicious meal that makes you feel good has always been a passion of mine. It’s what made me want to be part of True Food Kitchen originally,” Winfrey said. “I am excited to continue to support the brand in expanding their mission to bring seasonal, delicious and nutritious food to more people.” Building a better food system Jason Karp, founder and chief executive officer of HumanCo, says True Food Kitchen is in a category of its own. De. Andrew Weil | Courtesy “It’s an amazing, uniquely mission-driven brand that’s authentic, accessible and unwavering at a time when a lot of health and wellness is not. While many companies are engineering man-made and synthetic products, True Food Kitchen looks to nature and farms for all of its food — and we believe this is how we can all build a better, more sustainable food system. Most of all, we love that it’s not just healthy food, but also delicious, craveable food with fresh and intriguing options using only the best real food ingredients,” Karp said. According to Brent Drever, co-founder and president of Manna Tree, the investment firm made the investment into the chain because True Food aligns with its own commitments. “We’re looking forward to working closely with their management team and leveraging our expertise to help True Food Kitchen bring its revolutionary ‘better food for better living’ concept to a much wider audience,” he said. More than 75 percent of Americans say they eat healthily, but data reveal that’s not the case. One study found less than three percent of Americans fit the definition of a healthy lifestyle. Still, restaurants—particularly fast-food chains—have been angling toward healthier fare in recent years. Consumers say they’re driven to eat healthier plant-forward diets first for their health and secondarily for the planet. Images courtesy True Food Kitchen

Meet The Sharks And Guest Sharks Of Shark Tank Season 14 TheTealMango
Meet The Sharks And Guest Sharks Of ‘Shark Tank’ Season 14 – TheTealMango https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/meet-the-sharks-and-guest-sharks-of-shark-tank-season-14-thetealmango/ The Sharks will soon be returning to your TV screens with another exciting season! The 14th season of the business reality show Shark Tank will kickstart with a live event on September 23, 2022, Friday on ABC. We know all of you are pretty thrilled to learn more about the sharks and guest sharks who are set to crack a new wave of deals in the upcoming season of the show. So what are you waiting for? Keep scrolling down to know everything about the sharks and guest sharks of Shark Tank season 14. The show Shark Tank premiered on August 9, 2009. The reality show gives entrepreneurs a golden opportunity to present their business plans in front of investors and try to get hold of deals that will change their lives forever. Who are the sharks in ‘Shark Tank’ season 14? The show’s long-standing sharks Barbara Corcoran, Mark Cuban, Lori Greiner, Robert Herjavec, Daymond John, and Kevin O’Leary will be seen making some great offers and cracking a couple of good deals in the forthcoming season of the reality show. As per ABC, Shark Tank, “gives people from all walks of life the chance to chase the American dream and potentially secure business deals that could make them millionaires.” 1. Barbara Corcoran Barbara Corcoran is an American businesswoman, investor, syndicated columnist, and television personality. She has starred on the show Shark Tank since its debut in the year 2009. People think all Barbara does in the show is say, “I’m out.” When it comes to making offers, Barbara’s offers are pretty fair but conservative. She weighs the level of risk before getting involved in a deal. Back in the day, Corcoran worked as a waitress in Manhattan. At that time, her then-boyfriend Ramone Simone convinced her to work for a real estate company. Then, she wanted to be her own boss and she and her then-boyfriend Ramone co-founded the company Corcoran-Simone in the year 1973. Simone loaned her $1000 around the same time. Within the blink of an eye, their romantic relationship turned into a business partnership. Everything was going well for these two lovebirds but then, Ramone left Barbara for their secretary. They say, ‘success is the best revenge’ and Barbara proved them right. Soon after her split from her boyfriend Simone, she established her own company called The Corcoran Group. Over time, she build The Corcoran Group into a real estate empire and sold it for $70 million in the year 2001. 2. Mark Cuban Mark Cuban is a billionaire entrepreneur, television personality, and media proprietor. As per Forbes, he has an estimated net worth of $4.7 billion. Right now, he owns an NBA team and is also the co-owner of a media and entertainment company called 2929 Entertainment. Cuban was brought up in a family of Jewish immigrants. During his childhood days, he didn’t have much money. He stepped into the world of business at the young age of 12. At that point in time, he sold garbage bags and soon afterward he began selling stamps and coins to supplement his income. These days, many kids ask their parents to get them a pair of the latest basketball shoes but Mark had to work for it. And now, he is the owner of the Dallas Mavericks professional basketball team of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Cuban began his own company, MicroSolutions in 1983. In the early days, his company was a system integrator and software reseller. He bagged two million dollars in his kitty by selling MicroSolutions in 1990. Then, Cuban and his friends teamed up and founded Audionet. Later on, Audionet became Broadcast.com. He was able to amplify and build the company into $5.7 billion in Yahoo! stock. As an investor on Shark Tank, Mark is straightforward, he doesn’t step away from making jaw-dropping offers. His eyes light up whenever he sees a gadget or an app as he is a tech mogul and has great expertise in that sector. 3. Lori Greiner Lori Greiner is also known as the ‘Queen of QVC.’ She is the president and founder of For Your Ease Only, Inc. Back in the day, she was a playwright for some time and she sold jewelry. The turning point in her life came when she invented a plastic organizer that could hold 100 earrings. In the year 1996, her product was picked up by J.C Penney. At that time, Greiner thought of expanding her business and she switched to QVC. Soon afterward, she launched Clever & Unique Creations, one of the longest-running shows on the network in the year 2000. Lori joined the reality show Shark Tank in 2012. In the show, she was able to make some good deals and produce a few millionaires such as Linda Clark & Gloria Hoffmanand (Simply Fit Board: Core Workout Balance Board), Aaron Krause (Scrub Daddy), and Marc Newburger & Jeffrey Simon (Drop Stop). Even though Lori is a millionaire, she is humble and still remembers the time when she was hustling to survive in the business world. She likes to put her money into products that have mass appeal and are demonstrable and sellable. She uses her charm in order to sweet talk the entrepreneurs to pick her offer. Lori never brags about the money she has made to date, instead, she throws some light on the fact that how she has provided a helping hand to entrepreneurs to make their money and sell their products. 4. Robert Herjavec Robert was born in Communist Croatia. He and his family left the country when he was merely 8 years old. At that time, his father Vladimir was a manager in Croatia and he would often land up in jail because of his anti-communist sentiments. In a media interaction, Robert talked about his dad and said, “He’d drink a little too much and then say bad things about Communism, and got thrown into jail 22 times for being an anti-Communist.”  His dad was an immigrant so he didn’t know English and due to that, he didn’t get any good job. At that time, he worked as a janitor in the factory. To support his family financially, Robert also did many jobs such as working as a salesman, delivering newspapers, being a collections agent, and waiting tables. He began his IT career as a sales agent for Logiquest, he sold IBM mainframe emulation boards. After leaving Logiquest, Robert founded BRAK Systems, a Canadian integrator of Internet security software, from the basement of his home. He sold the company to AT&T Canada in March 2000 for $30.2 million. Then, he took a three-year-long gap to spend some time with his family. Herjavec founded The Herjavec Group in 2003 and it is one of Canada’s fastest-growing technology companies and it has been growing rapidly over time. Just like his fellow Shark Lori, Robert likes to put money into products that have a demonstration. He is one of the kings in cyberspace. His offers on the show Shark Tank are pretty fair and we have seen times where he has overpaid to get a deal. 5. Daymond John Daymond John was born in Brooklyn, New York City. He was raised in the Hollis neighborhood of Queens. He started working at the young age of 10 when his parents got divorced. At that time, he handed out flyers and waited tables to support his family’s meager income. John’s mom supported him throughout his ups and downs. She even permitted him to turn their house into a factory and let him mortgage it so he could expand FUBU (For Us, By Us), a much-celebrated global lifestyle brand. Even though he didn’t have capital in hand, he never gave up and kept working hard to achieve his goals. Daymond wanted to promote his brand in the market so he convinced rappers to wear his clothing line. At the end of the day, his masterstroke worked and this led to a sudden increase in demand for his brand in the market. Retailers began reaching out to Daymond to get a hold of a stock of his hot new merchandise. To date, FUBU has done more than $6 billion in sales. John has been on the show Shark Tank since the year 2009. He believes in handling business in a quick and straightforward manner. He doesn’t like people who are indecisive and try to beat around the bush. He is good at judging people and knows when something is fishy. Clothing is Daymond’s field of expertise. He managed to get FUBU from the streets of New York City to the international spotlight. He even has a couple of links to the world of entertainment and knows many artists such as Pitbull and LL Cool J. 6. Kevin O’Leary Terence Thomas Kevin O’Leary aka ‘Mr. Wonderful’ was born in Canada. He was brought up in the Town of Mount Royal, Quebec. His parents got divorced when he was a child. He bagged an honors bachelor’s degree in environmental studies and psychology from the University of Waterloo in 1977. Later on, he received an MBA in entrepreneurship from the Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario in 1980. Kevin started making money by promoting software. He began Softkey in the 1980s in a Toronto basement by taking a loan of $10,000 loan from his mother. Over time, his company started flourishing in the business world. Kevin’s company, Softkey which was later known as The Learning Company was bought by Mattel in 1999 for $4.2 billion. Then, he stepped into the mutual fund market. He co-founded O’Leary Funds Inc., in the year 2008. It is a mutual fund company focused on global yield investing. He sold his company to a private investment-management company owned by Canadian businessman W. Brett Wilson in 2015. Kevin O’Leary has been a part of the show Shark Tank right from the start. Kevin loves money more than anything. He is a cold-blooded shark and is not afraid to spit facts. He tries to find faults in the pitches of the entrepreneurs and indulges in proper arguments with them. In the past, he has even made a couple of entrepreneurs cry with his harsh criticism of their ideas. O’Leary likes to invest his money in products that have any link with the finance space. Analysis | The Trailer: Five Big Things This Year’s Primaries Told Us – The Washington Post https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/analysis-the-trailer-five-big-things-this-years-primaries-told-us-the-washington-post/ In this edition: What we learned from the midterm primaries, what’s showing up in campaign ads since Labor Day, and questions and answers with some of the people we’ve been checking in with on the trail. This is the final edition of The Trailer. We’ve been delivering campaign news from across the country for four full years — a whole presidential term! — and hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did. We couldn’t have done it without the sharp editing of Terri Rupar, Cathy Decker, Vanessa Williams and Sean Sullivan. Thank you for reading, and au revoir. We’ll see you again. To stay up to date on politics, the midterms and 2024, sign up for The 5-Minute Fix, a newsletter from The Washington Post’s Amber Phillips. Primary season is over. The general election tickets are set. And the voters who picked this year’s candidates set up dozens of competitive races, many in congressional districts brand new for the cycle — and a few probably harder for Republicans than they needed to be. Our colleagues at The Washington Post will cover every angle of this election from here. But what did the primaries end up telling us? Five big things. Democrats mostly got the candidates they wanted in swing-seat races. There were setbacks, like an ill-fated investment in a crypto-backed newcomer in Oregon. There were controversies, especially when Democratic committees spent to get far-right, “stop the steal”-minded Republicans through their primaries, viewing them as easier to defeat in November. But in the big picture, Democrats headed toward the midterms with the candidates favored by the national party leadership. The one notable exception: Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.), who was abandoned by local Democratic parties before he lost to challenger Jamie McLeod-Skinner. But national Democrats ignored his race, and the main party committees, entering the cycle after scrapping a “blacklist” against consultants who worked with challengers, stayed out of primaries as other groups got to meddling. It was the same story in Senate races, where the closest anything got to a fracas was the primary in Pennsylvania. Lt. Gov. John Fetterman got in early, held a lead in public polls, and never gave it up, though early polling for Rep. Conor Lamb (D) showed a potentially close contest. If there was ever a race for Republicans or outside groups to interfere in, and weaken the eventual nominee, that was it; the Collective PAC, which supports Black candidates, hit Fetterman out of the gate with an ad buy focused on an incident when, with a shotgun in hand, he stopped an unarmed Black jogger But the electability-focused Democratic electorate was convinced that Fetterman’s unique profile would be an asset, and even some middling debate performances didn’t stop him from sweeping every county in the May primary. In Wisconsin, where rivals to Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes (D) spent millions portraying themselves as more electable, every credible challenger folded up his or her campaign before the primary. The same thing happened in North Carolina and Florida, minus the wasted millions; North Carolina state Sen. Jeff Jackson quit his race and ran for a House seat, while Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.) opted not to challenge Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.). There was more competition in the races for state office, with primaries in Hawaii, Oregon and Florida that got rough in the final weeks. But in federal races, even when enthusiasm about the Biden administration was lowest, Democrats were largely able to avoid pricey challenges and pile up money for November. Republicans wanted a diverse candidate class, and they got it. Whether they win control of the House, Republicans have a candidate roster with more racial and gender diversity than ever. That’s the fruit of a multiyear, multi-PAC effort to change who wins nominations, including a recruiting effort by party leaders and interventions from members like Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), who closed out primary season with a boost for New Hampshire conservative Karoline Leavitt last week. In the 74 seats targeted by the National Republican Congressional Committee, ranging from newly gerrymandered Trump districts to places President Biden won by 20 points, 25 of the party’s nominees are not White men. In Texas, Wesley Hunt is all but certain to become the state’s first Black Republican congressman; in Michigan, John James could add to the ranks of Black Republicans in the House, while the state sends no Black Democrats to Washington at all. The other Black GOP nominee in Michigan is John Gibbs, who defeated Rep. Peter Meijer (R-Mich.) in a summer primary that focused on Meijer’s vote to impeach Trump in 2021 and his support for pro-LGBT legislation in the House. In Arkansas, where the Democratic Party has stopped fielding competitive statewide campaigns, Republicans are likely to elect Sarah Sanders as governor and Attorney Gen. Leslie Rutledge as lieutenant governor — the first time anywhere in the country both roles would be held concurrently by women. Turnout was mostly high for a midterm, especially in MAGA country. It’s always tricky to make a year-to-year voter turnout comparison. Some states that have competitive races one cycle don’t have them the next; some open seats with expensive primaries in one year have sleepy, no-challenger races in another year. But the pattern is clear: Voter turnout was comparable to the high-turnout 2018 primaries, and reliably higher in places where there’s been a lot of partisan turnover since 2016. That was clear very early in the cycle, when nearly 1.1 million votes were cast in Ohio’s GOP primary for U.S. Senate, and for the first time in a primary, Republican voting outpaced Democratic voting in the Mahoning Valley. In Mahoning County itself, where 11,554 GOP votes were cast in the 2018 primary, 20,484 GOP votes were cast this year, compared to 15,998 for Democrats. In Ohio, voters don’t register by party; their partisanship is determined by which primary they choose to vote in. Republicans had strong turnout in a number of places with those rules, like South Texas. For much of the year, they were also building an advantage, or taking advantage of Democratic decline, in states with partisan voter registration. Look at two of the biggest swing states. In November 2020, according to Pennsylvania’s registration report, nearly 4.2 million voters there were registered as Democrats, 3.5 million were registered as Republicans, and 1.3 million were registered with a third party or no party. By May, before the primary, Democrats had declined by 228,452; Republicans had declined by 92,781; and the rest of the electorate had declined by 31,296. At the end of 2021, Florida Republicans wiped out the Democrats’ traditional registration advantage, and by this summer, the GOP had a more than 200,000-registration advantage over Democrats. Mixed record for Trump-backed candidates. Sure, the former president has a winning record overall — and he’ll be the first to tell you about it. According to NPR, which helpfully tracked every Trump endorsement, Trump-backed Republicans won in 41 of 45 open seats, and just one Trump-endorsed incumbent lost. And the defeat of North Carolina Rep. Madison Cawthorn had more to do with the freshman’s own callow behavior, and the enemies he made by making up smears against his colleagues, than with anything Trump did. Most of those races were pretty easy for Trumpworld, and the leader of the Republican Party didn’t take many risks. He sat out New Hampshire’s primaries, even after near miss U.S. Senate primary loser Chuck Morse met with him personally. He endorsed both candidates named “Eric” in Missouri’s U.S. Senate primary, claiming credit when Attorney Gen. Eric Schmitt defeated ex-Gov. Eric Greitens. (This was easy, because both were eager to give him credit.) Trump’s early, on-record opposition to the Republicans who voted to impeach him after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob helped defeat most of them, and the only two (of 10) who’ll be on a ballot in November ran in states with top-two primaries, where they only needed to place second in a race with every candidate of every party to make a runoff. Where did Trump lose? His support wasn’t enough to carry weak GOP nominees who were opposed by local party leaders — most notably in Georgia, where the ex-president’s frustration at a near-sweep for Gov. Brian Kemp and his allies led to him bragging about helping the nominee for lieutenant governor win his primary. (No offense to lieutenant governors, but it was genuinely odd to hear Trump talk about this when he was campaigning in Wyoming.) Where there was a strong local GOP disagreeing with Trump, it could hold him off. Where there wasn’t — think of Illinois and Maryland — Trump’s endorsement could anoint whoever he wanted. Big spending chipped away at the Democratic Party’s left. In 2018 and 2020, multiple incumbent Democrats were ousted by candidates running to their left, helped by the infrastructure built after Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) first ran for president. In 2022, that only happened once, in Oregon, with Jamie McLeod-Skinner. Across the country, the left lost as much as it gained. Two incumbents backed by liberal groups, Rep. Marie Newman (D-Ill.) and Rep. Andy Levin (D-Mich.), lost races against colleagues after redistricting packed them into the same seats. In 2023, the winners of those races will be working with Democrats who ran left — Greg Casar in Texas, Summer Lee in Pennsylvania, and Delia Ramirez in Illinois. But the left had bigger ambitions, and was repeatedly stopped by campaign spending it struggled to respond to, typically from AIPAC’s new United Democracy PAC or the Democratic Majorit...

Equinix And NUS Centre For Energy Research & Technology Partner To Advance Hydrogen Technologies For Data Centers PR Newswire
Equinix And NUS Centre For Energy Research & Technology Partner To Advance Hydrogen Technologies For Data Centers – PR Newswire https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/equinix-and-nus-centre-for-energy-research-technology-partner-to-advance-hydrogen-technologies-for-data-centers-pr-newswire/ , /PRNewswire/ — Continuing its efforts to advance the sustainability of digital infrastructure and reach its climate neutral targets, aligned to science-based targets, by 2030, Equinix, Inc. ( Nasdaq: EQIX) today announced a partnership with the Centre for Energy Research & Technology (CERT) under the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) College of Design and Engineering to explore technologies that enable the use of hydrogen as a green fuel source for mission-critical data center infrastructure. Together, Equinix and CERT will launch the world’s first research project to compare the efficiency of proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells and fuel-flexible linear generator technologies. PEM fuel cells are a leading contender for hydrogen energy, while fuel-flexible linear generators enable operators to easily switch between various clean fuel options including hydrogen, biogas and various renewable liquid fuels. Adoption of these technologies may allow data centers to reduce carbon emissions while meeting the rising demand for data, colocation and interconnection services. The research collaboration between Equinix and CERT will involve a holistic assessment of the suitability of these technologies for tropical data centers, considering local climatic conditions, site constraints, power demand, supply chain, fuel storage capabilities as well as local regulatory policies.  This research initiative comes under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed earlier this year between the two partners. Under the MOU, CERT will conduct a comprehensive analysis of technologies identified in collaboration with Equinix, to determine the operational viability of the technologies at scale. Based on the results of the research, Equinix expects to develop proof-of-concept projects within its global network of data centers for real-world testing and to support incorporation into future data center designs. By driving innovation in Singapore, the Equinix and CERT partnership aims to accelerate disruptive technologies that can reduce the carbon footprint of global data centers, particularly in tropical locations. This partnership forms part of Equinix’s Future First strategy that underscores the company’s commitment to greening the digital economy. Green hydrogen has been identified as a viable source of sustainable energy for data centers. However, hydrogen generation on an industrial scale remains several years away from being commercially viable, making it imperative to assess and adopt alternatives even as global research and development continues. Quotes: Yee May Leong, Managing Director, South Asia, Equinix “Data centers serve as the conduit powering the digital economy, and greening their operations can drive the rise of sustainable business throughout the broader economic landscape. Working with like-minded partners like the Centre for Energy Research & Technology at NUS empowers us with the combined experience and expertise to advance the growth of digital economies in line with environmental obligations, benefiting the data center industry, global economies, and the planet.” Associate Professor Lee Poh Seng, Director, Centre for Energy Research and Technology, NUS College of Design and Engineering “Sustainability is a key pillar of the global economy. To complement the efforts made by the public sector, timely progress also requires collaboration with stakeholders in the private sector and academia. We are keen to work with industry partners like Equinix, which is known for its sustainability efforts and provides us access to a global network of data centers that can serve as a testbed for a more accurate assessment of operational viability. Through this partnership, we look forward to playing a driving role for green data center innovations that can be applied in Singapore and globally.” Reaffirming Equinix’s commitment to creating a more sustainable future for the environment, the company has been recognized with a host of sustainability awards across the Asia-Pacific region. In 2022, Equinix was named Asia’s Green Company of the Year at the Asia Corporate Excellence & Sustainability Awards, the Singapore Data Centre Services Company of the Year by Frost & Sullivan, and received the Green Innovation Award under the MNC Category at the 2022 Singapore Environmental Achievement Awards. Highlights / Key Facts: Under this partnership, Equinix and NUS CERT will be conducting a comprehensive analysis to compare two clean on-site power generation technologies for data centers of the future. These technologies include: PEM fuel cells are becoming increasingly popular due to their ability to generate power with hydrogen and oxygen. Some designs can also run the process in reverse to produce pure hydrogen for future use with just water and electricity. Fuel-flexible linear generators offer the ability to switch between fuels like hydrogen, biogas and various renewable liquid fuels, enabling the installation of infrastructure that can be easily adapted to evolving market developments, empowering organizations with enhanced agility. Equinix was the first in the data center industry to commit to becoming climate neutral, aligned to approved science-based targets, for emissions reduction across global operations and supply chain by 2030. In addition, Equinix continues to evaluate for on-site solar opportunities, onsite generation from fuel cells, and any other distributed low-carbon technology that fits with its overall strategy. Equinix’s renewable energy coverage has been over 90% since 2018. In 2021, the company achieved 95% renewable energy coverage. Year-over-year, Equinix has increased our procurement of renewables by 16% on a GWh-basis. Earlier this year, Equinix announced the opening of its first Co-Innovation Facility (CIF), located in its DC15 International Business Exchange (IBX®) data center at the Equinix Ashburn Campus in the Washington, D.C. area. The CIF is a component of its Data Center of the Future Initiative and is a new capability that enables innovative partners to work with Equinix on trialing and developing methodologies that may be used to help define the future of digital infrastructure and services. 10 Solo Travel Destinations For Your First Trip Alone The Washington Post
10 Solo Travel Destinations For Your First Trip Alone The Washington Post
10 Solo Travel Destinations For Your First Trip Alone – The Washington Post https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/10-solo-travel-destinations-for-your-first-trip-alone-the-washington-post/ Traveling alone is one of life’s most rewarding — and sometimes embarrassing — experiences, whether you’re fresh out of high school or you’re married with kids. You get to wander on your own schedule, follow your instincts and pursue your perfect travel day. But you’re also out of your element. You may have to navigate foreign cultural norms and faux pas. You may fail in the process. The good news is those blunders build character — and make for better travel stories. If you’re new to solo travel, it can feel overwhelming to pick a place to go, let alone plan the whole trip. I’ve had the best time where there’s accessible public transportation and plentiful Ubers or taxis. My favorite places feel vibrant and safe beyond hotels and resorts. Remember that destinations that may have been perfect for some solo travelers may have been terrible for others. Some may be great for men but unsafe for women or people of color. Do your homework before you start locking in a trip to make sure a place is right for you, and take some basic precautions: make sure your phone’s going to work if you’re traveling abroad, and enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive important alerts and make yourself easier to locate in an emergency. So where should you go? Start with these 10 places. 1 San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico Return to menu After traveling more than 20,000 miles across Mexico — passing through 32 states and 156 cities — cookbook author Rick Martinez has many recommendations for solo trips. San Cristóbal de las Casas, a town in the Chiapas highlands, makes his shortlist for its Spanish colonial architecture, textile artisans and outdoor markets. The cafe culture reminds Martinez of Paris. “You can people-watch and relax,” he said, “and the food is really amazing.” Don’t leave without trying the city’s tamales, roasted plantains and other fruits — from guava to apples to passion fruit — preserved in syrups and alcohol. Fair warning: you’ll have to fly to the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez and take a bus. Return to menu According to findings from a VacationRenter analysis on “The Best (And Worst) Travel Destinations for Introverts,” Denver is the top pick based on factors like population density, walkability and the range of activities. That makes sense; Denver has a laid-back style and is easy to get around, offering something for every kind of solo traveler (extroverts, too). Once you get off the Denver airport rail at Union Station, the world is your oyster. Visit distilleries and breweries, hike close to the city or take a walking tour to see the city like a local, appreciating the murals along Cherry Creek trail. Return to menu After five experiences traveling alone in Japan, I fully endorse a solo trip to the country whether you want excitement, peace and quiet or something in between. I’m not alone. “I loved traveling Japan solo because it is safe, clean, and people are so respectful, kind, and helpful,” Annie Cheng, founder of the group tour company The Table Less Traveled, said in an email. The obvious place to go — particularly for travelers who may feel self-conscious being on their own — is Tokyo, where restaurants, bars and public baths cater to the solo customer. You could spend your entire trip in Japan’s capital, or venture out by train to see more of the country’s special pockets, from mountainous Sapporo to the beaches of Okinawa to bustling Osaka. Don’t feel intimidated to plan a trip if you don’t speak Japanese. “Despite the language barrier, I’ve had some of my best meals in Japan traveling solo,” Cheng said. Her advice for travelers is to get outside of their comfort zone, try to talk to anyone you can. “You may feel awkward, stupid, or embarrassed if it doesn’t go as you planned, but in the best case scenario you make a new friend and local connection,” Cheng said. Return to menu Chanice “Queenie” Williams, founder of the blog and travel planning site Fly with Queenie, says her solo trip to Tanzania this summer was a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. With an itinerary full of cities, national parks and beaches, it felt “perfect for solo travelers, particularly women who may not feel comfortable alone,” Williams said in an email. On her trip through Arusha, Moshi, Zanzibar, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, Williams stayed in hostels where she could meet other solo travelers, choosing places that had good reviews online before booking. Zanzibar’s population is predominantly Muslim, so “adhering to the dress code and covering up will keep you from standing out and getting stares,” Williams advises. Return to menu Food writer, photographer and cookbook author Saghar Setareh is has a list of criteria that makes a place great for solo travel. There has to be good public transportation (an essential perk whether you’re visiting for a layover or a proper vacation), rich cultural and historic appeal as well as an exciting food scene to explore at different price ranges. Istanbul ticks every box. Hop on a $3 bus at the Istanbul Airport and you’ll be in the city in 45 minutes where you’ll find everything on Setareh’s list and more. Return to menu While Italy’s big cities are immensely popular for wandering alone, Katie Parla, author of the forthcoming cookbook “Food of the Italian Islands,” recommends heading off the coast of Lazio to the volcanic island of Ponza. It’s not just the destination that dazzles her, “I actually love the part of getting there,” she said in an email. To get to Ponza from Rome — about a four-hour trip door-to-door, Parla says — you’ll have to take a ferry after a train or a bus. Parla’s No. 1 tip for visitors is to rent a boat to explore the island’s breathtaking bays. After you drop anchor, “it is pure freedom to rent a scooter and zip around the volcanic contours of Ponza en route to aperitivo or dinner in the village of Le Forna as the sun sets over neighboring Palmarola in the distance,” Parla said. Return to menu Anais Martinez, a food blogger and culinary tour guide from Mexico City, recommends her hometown for any solo traveler. One of the biggest cities in the world, it’s full of museums and archaeological sites to wander, parks and public squares for people-watching and amazing food at every price point. For those worried about getting into said famous restaurants, most “would happily take solo travelers even if there is a long waiting list,” Martinez said in an email. “Show up at the door as soon as they open and you just might get lucky.” Return to menu Easy train to the airport? Check. Amazing food from every corner of the globe? Check. An eclectic mix of neighborhoods you can explore by foot? Check. San Francisco is a no-brainer for solo travel. Walk the city’s 49 square miles to get a feel of it all, from the foggy end-of-the-earth vibes of the Outer Sunset all the way to the waterfront Embarcadero, stopping along the way to grab a seat at the bar at one of the city’s many restaurants. Return to menu If you want a solo trip in paradise, Bali is the place. After my first trip to Bali, in 2015, I felt a gravitational pull to return for more time surfing, eating, making new friends, practicing the local language, listening to bewitching music played on the gamelan and exploring the coastline and nearby islands — all while feeling safe and relaxed on my own. If you’ve never been to the Indonesian island, don’t spend your whole time in Seminyak and Ubud. Rent a motorbike and get to know the rest of the island — which is only about 95 miles wide east to west. You can ride through lush rainforest and rice terraces to pristine beaches with immaculate waves to surf and places to hike, or find new spots to feast on Indonesian cuisine. Return to menu Ranked one of the safest cities in the world, Amsterdam attracts solo travelers with its architecture, parks, restaurants and nightlife. The capital of the Netherlands was travel writer Ali Wunderman’s first stop as a solo traveler, and a favorite destination for countless others with similar stories. Maybe that’s because it’s simple to navigate between biking and taking the tram. Or maybe it’s that “the hostels in Amsterdam are known to be great places to meet people,” Wunderman said. It was easy for her to make friends to go sightseeing and museum-hopping. But even when she was on her own, “It’s impossible to get bored,” she said. %

Walgreen To Spend $1.4B To Buy Shields Health Solutions – SCNow https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/walgreen-to-spend-1-4b-to-buy-shields-health-solutions-scnow/ Walgreens is spending nearly $1.4 billion to buy the remaining stake in Shields Health Solutions it doesn’t already own and continue pushing into the fast-growing area of specialty pharmacy. The drugstore chain says it will acquire a 30% stake in a deal expected to close by the end of this year. Walgreens started building a minority investment in the privately held Shields in 2019 and increased its share to about 70% last year. The 10-year-old company helps health systems set up and run specialty pharmacies, which manage medications for people with complex and chronic medical conditions. Walgreens is spending nearly $1.4 billion to buy the remaining stake in Shields Health Solutions it doesn’t already own as it pushes into the fast-growing specialty pharmacy business. The drugstore chain hopes to close on the remainder of the company by the end of the year. Walgreens started building a minority investment in the privately held Shields in 2019 and that stake reached about 70% last year. The 10-year-old company helps health systems set up and run specialty pharmacies, which manage medications for people with complex and chronic medical conditions. Shields, based in Stoughton, Massachusetts, just south of Boston, works with nearly 80 health systems that represent about 1,000 hospitals nationwide. Insurers and employers see these expensive specialty drugs as a major factor behind rising health care costs and they are focusing more on managing or controlling related expenses. The deal also reflects Walgreens’ expanding roll outside of its retail stores. The company, with about 13,000 locations worldwide, has moved into areas like care delivery and trying to free up its store pharmacists to work more on answering patient questions or helping to manage their health. The company has invested billions of dollars in care provider Village MD and is opening primary care practices next to its drugstores. The goal is to have the pharmacies and the physician offices work together to help keep patients healthy. Walgreens also said Tuesday that company president and former Rite Aid Corp. CEO John Standley will leave the company in November “to pursue other opportunities.” He will be replaced by Shields CEO Lee Cooper and Walgreens executive Tracey Brown. They will run the pharmacy and retail sides of the business, respectively. Shares of Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc., based in Deerfield, Illinois, slipped 1% Tuesday amid a broader market sell-off. Can OSHA Regulate The Metaverse? | Holland & Knight LLP – JDSupra – JD Supra https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/can-osha-regulate-the-metaverse-holland-knight-llp-jdsupra-jd-supra/ We’re supposed to stand more and sit less. That’s good advice for your health, but maybe not always when you’re wearing a virtual reality (VR) headset, which present certain workplace health and safety issues. The most obvious hazard is getting too carried away and, e.g., crashing through your television set. But there are other potential risks. Some are short-term such as headaches, neck aches, nausea and eye discomfort. Others may be longer term, including concerns about myopia brought on by the disconnect between a screen inches from your eyes yet depicting virtual objects miles away. Very, very smart people are working on that one. Can the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulate these potential risks? Perhaps some more than others. The principal risk is one we’re all aware of: disorientation followed by a fall or a crash. OSHA can likely regulate this hazard under the “general-duty clause,” a broad provision of law that requires employers to maintain a workplace free of serious recognized hazards. Where VR sets are used, employers need to make sure that employees are secure in their space and can’t hurt themselves or others. When it comes to problems brought on by wearing the headset, such as headaches, neck pain or back pain, that is arguably an ergonomics issue and thus less susceptible to OSHA regulation. OSHA attempted to require attention to ergonomics in the workplace at the end of the Clinton Administration, but that effort was reversed by Congress. Ever since, OSHA has relied on the general-duty clause for ergonomic hazards. Conceivably, VR headsets that fit poorly, are too heavy or are worn too long could become a hazard under the general-duty clause, but an official OSHA standard on the subject could be legally difficult. How about other common complaints, like eye strain, headaches, dizziness or nausea? The general-duty clause only covers hazards likely to result in death (not applicable) or “serious physical harm.” The kinds of complaints described above may not meet that threshold, especially if they’re not recurring or require medical treatment. However, if the complaints continue, if they result in lost work time or if they are indicators for more serious health problems caused or exacerbated by too much VR time, then OSHA might be able to step in under the general-duty clause. Consider, too, VR headsets’ effects on employees’ eyes and ears. OSHA does have a standard requiring employers to protect employees from certain levels of noise exposure, regardless of resultant harm. And there’s also the potential claim that VR time resulted in damage to eyes or ears, though it may be difficult for OSHA – or an employee in a civil suit – to prove that any consequent diminishment in hearing or vision was brought on by extended use of a VR headset, when the earphone market is growing 20 percent per year and the average American adult stares at screens for at least 11 hours per day. Finally, OSHA recordkeeping requirements might apply to VR injuries and illnesses. Every employer must report workplace deaths and certain extremely serious injuries and illnesses. This includes injuries and illnesses that happen while working from home. Many low-risk industries are exempt from recording other injuries and illnesses – though industries of every kind are embracing VR and other metaverse technologies.

Press Release | Press Releases | Newsroom | U.S – Senator Dick Durbin https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/press-release-press-releases-newsroom-u-s-senator-dick-durbin/ 09.20.22 WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) and U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Co-Chairs of the Senate Baltic Freedom Caucus, met with the Speaker of Lithuania’s Parliament Viktorija Cmilyte-Nielsen to discuss the continued congressional support for the Baltic States as well as ongoing Russian aggression and interference in western democracies.  During the meeting, the Senators also offered their support to Lithuania as the nation faces economic bullying from the Chinese government for improving diplomatic ties with Taiwan.  Durbin and Grassley were also joined by Senators Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN).  “Time and time again, Lithuania has proved itself to be a champion of freedom and democracy,” said Durbin. “Today, in the face of Russian aggression and Chinese economic intimidation, is no different. As Co-Chair of the Senate Baltic Freedom Caucus and as a son of a Lithuanian immigrant, I will continue to be an outspoken ally to the Lithuanian people and the nation’s Baltic neighbors as they work to uphold these values in an increasingly tense situation. Today’s conversation reaffirmed our alliance and proved in the face of Putin’s war, the courage and resilience of the people of Eastern Europe is unparalleled.” “We will continue to stand with our friends in Lithuania. This year our countries celebrated the milestone that is one century of continuous diplomatic relations. Amid ongoing Russian aggression and Chinese bullying, we in the Senate Baltic Freedom Caucus and throughout the country are steadfast in our support for our longstanding ally Lithuania. I look forward to more engagement and friendship between our nations in the years to come,” Grassley said. “We are grateful for US leadership which together with strong transatlantic alliance are essential at this critical time for the world order and especially for European security. The scenarios for our common future are being played out in Ukraine. We are also witnessing efforts by external forces to destabilise NATO and the EU. In the race for strategic patience with Russia, we must not only remain united and resolute, but step up our efforts to defend what we hold most dear – freedom, democracy, our values. That is why it is essential to continue to provide comprehensive assistance to Ukraine, to stop Russian aggression, to strengthen NATO’s Eastern flank, to increase energy independence, and to support other democracies around the world, including Taiwan. Lithuania stands ready to work together with our strategic partner the US for a better future,” said Viktorija Cmilyte-Nielsen, Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania. Photos of the meeting are available here. In June, Durbin met with Speaker Cmilyte-Nielsen in Vilnius, Lithuania, where he received the Aleksandras Stulginskis Star Award—only the second individual and first American to receive this award.  The new award honors Aleksandras Stulginskis, former President of Lithuania who served from 1920-1926 and was a strong advocate for a democratic republic. It was granted to Durbin for his decades-long support of Lithuanian independence and democracy and his promotion of parliamentary values. In February, Durbin visited with U.S. servicemembers at the NATO base in Pabrade, Lithuania.  In May, he and Grassley introduced the Baltic Defense and Deterrence Act, legislation to effectively codify the Baltic Security Initiative and create a complementary initiative at the U.S. Department of State. Durbin’s mother was born in Lithuania and came to the United States with her mother and siblings in 1911. -30- Previous Article Next Article

ABET Accredits Engineering Technology Programs GCU News GCU Today
ABET Accredits Engineering Technology Programs – GCU News – GCU Today https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/abet-accredits-engineering-technology-programs-gcu-news-gcu-today/ The latest programs to receive ABET accreditation are the Electrical Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology bachelor’s degree programs. Grand Canyon University’s engineering professors speak about dynamic systems in the classroom. But GCU’s Engineering Department itself is a dynamic system, constantly moving its programs forward. The latest programs to do so: the College of Science, Engineering and Technology’s Mechanical Engineering Technology and Electrical Engineering Technology bachelor’s degree programs, which recently received accreditation from the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET. This is another awesome example of how we all work together at GCU to accomplish our goals Dr. Richard Mulski, Assistant Dean of Engineering The stamp of approval from ABET — it originally stood for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, though that name has since been dropped — is considered the accreditation gold standard in those fields. Earning it was the culmination of a challenging 18-month, peer-review process that focused on what students experience and learn. Peer reviewers looked at program curricula, faculty, facilities and institutional support, with the process culminating in a site visit. It is the latest coup for the college, which in 2020 earned its first ABET accreditations for its bachelor’s degree tracks in Biomedical, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, as well as for its bachelor’s degree program in Computer Science. The College of Science, Engineering and Technology followed that up a year later when its bachelor’s in Engineering also received the ABET designation. “The ABET accreditation of these two programs (Mechanical Engineering Technology and Electrical Engineering Technology) was hard work and a great team effort,” said Assistant Dean of Engineering Dr. Richard Mulski. “The Engineering faculty, staff, students and other constituents performed very well, and this is another awesome example of how we all work together at GCU to accomplish our goals.” Richard Mulski. Mulski said the ABET team found no concerns in either of these programs, which “speaks to the quality of our Engineering programs at GCU.” CSET added the Mechanical Engineering Technology and Electrical Engineering Technology bachelor’s degree tracks to the curriculum in 2016, just a year after launching its first engineering programs in 2015. What differentiates engineering technology from traditional engineering is that the focus is on application and implementation — so a greater emphasis on hands-on lab skills — whereas engineering tracks concentrate more on theory and design and include higher-level math and theoretical science in the curricula. The engineering technology programs fit perfectly into GCU’s vision of becoming a significant player in science, technology, engineering and math education, fields that are expected to see faster-than-average growth. And they fit into CSET’s teaching style, which focuses on application rather than theory. Classes are formatted mainly as lab classes interspersed with lecture. Receiving an ABET accreditation means that a program meets a certain standard of quality assurance and that students graduating from those programs are prepared for industry. That bodes well for GCU’s students, since some employers will only hire from ABET-accredited programs. “This is excellent for our students who graduated with these degrees previously, since they now can proudly discuss ABET with a potential employer,” Mulski said. The Mechanical Engineering Technology and Electrical Engineering Technology bachelor’s programs are ABET accredited through Sept. 30, 2028, the maximum time before the next reaccreditation evaluation visit. ABET, the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology, accredits 4,361 programs at 850 colleges and universities in 41 countries. Wiscasset Speedway Race Season Drives Down Home Stretch – Courier-Gazette & Camden Herald https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/wiscasset-speedway-race-season-drives-down-home-stretch-courier-gazette-camden-herald/ WISCASSET — The closing weeks of every race season can be intense for drivers due to tight championship battles in each division. Wiscasset Speedway made it its mission to make Saturday’s Group #2 racing action fun as they hosted the second Fan Appreciation night of the season. The night, sponsored by Bozzuto’s Inc., featured a driver meet-and-greet session before the races followed by children’s bike races, where drivers joined in on the fun. Josh St. Clair of Liberty and his family. Photo courtesy of Peter Taylor The Maine Mariners organization even made an appearance with their beloved mascot, Beacon. Mainely Motorsports host and LST Motorsports Park owner Steve Perry emceed the night while raising money for Special Olympics Maine. The racing portion of the night kicked off with a 50-lap spotlight feature from the Wood Pellet Warehouse Late Models. Chris Burgess led the early charge in the feature, but Wiscasset Speedway’s August driver of the month Will Collins quickly maneuvered through the field, as he broke into the top three on lap 17. A mid-race caution on lap 21 brought the field together and Collins continued his pursuit, as he overtook Chris Burgess for the top spot just eight laps later. Twelve-year-old Daniel Harding came to life in the closing laps of the feature, as he pulled to Collins’ back bumper with three laps to go. Harding gave Collins a run for his money, but Collins was able to overcome, to pick up his fourth feature victory in five weeks. Ryan St. Clair finished strong, as he rounded out the podium. Nevis Island — Golden Rock Inn And Four Seasons Nevis Review – Cosmopolitan https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/nevis-island-golden-rock-inn-and-four-seasons-nevis-review-cosmopolitan/ Courtesy of Golden Rock Inn Juuust about a three-hour flight from Miami, there are a pair of volcanic islands that make up the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis that are kinda the best-kept secret in the Caribbean. So when the opportunity to travel to Nevis (the smaller of the two islands) hit my inbox a few months ago, I was intrigued. And when I saw where I’d be staying—the quaint, adorable Golden Rock Inn boutique hotel for the first part of the trip and the legendary Four Seasons Resort Nevis, West Indies for the second, I quickly RSVP’d. Before I help ya plan your trip to paradise during this installment of Cosmo’s Must-Visit List, here’s the lowdown on Nevis: Much like surrounding vacation spots (think: Turks & Caicos, St. Barts, or The Bahamas), it has everything from white sandy beaches, clear blue waters, opportunities for both relaxation and adventure, and a life-is-good spirit that’s so quintessentially Caribbean. But unlike other islands in the area, the major plus is that Nevis has remained relatively hidden and is not at all flooded with tourists. In fact, it feels a little like an exclusive private island…which is probably why it was a fave spot of Princess Diana’s (!!). Long story short, Nevis is a high-key treasure to uncover, and I’m about to let you in on *the* best adventure hotspots ~spas under the stars~, and all the food and cocktails you gotta try, from the sweet rum to the spicy seafood. Keep reading for everything you need to know before planning a trip to this magical little island. (FYI: The writer’s accommodations, meals, and some scheduled activities were comped in order to write this review.) Stay Golden Rock Inn: This 11-room property (a former sugar mill, btw) is tucked away in the mountains of Nevis and owned by renowned New York artists Brice and Helen Marden. With the help of architect Ed Tuttle, the couple managed to bridge their passion for art and design with an appreciation and respect for nature. The result is a colorful and whimsical hotel that’ll make you feel like you’re totally immersed in the jungle, thanks in part to the 40-acre garden that’s home to monkeys, hummingbirds, small reptiles, and more than 50 species of palms. I mean, I caught absolutely delish fresh mangoes straight from a tree. I also had a few other unforgettable experiences that gave me a chance to unleash my inner nature girl (more on that later) during my time at Golden Rock Inn. Courtesy of Hanna Flanagan Courtesy of Golden Rock Inn The Four Seasons: After spending a few days exploring the mountains, I packed up my bags, kissed the idyllic Golden Rock Inn scenery goodbye, and checked into the Four Seasons oceanfront resort for some serious R&R—10/10 would recommend, let me tell ya. It was love at first sight when I opened the doors to my suite, which had *stunning* ocean views, one of those beds that practically begs you to take an afternoon nap, and the bubble bath-worthy tub of my dreams. Although I have to admit, I was sold the second I entered the lobby, which features an open design and a breathtakingly beautiful view of an infinity pool overlooking the ocean (and because we’re talking about the Four Seasons, there’s not just one pool, there’s three!). Additional amenities include a full spa, golf course, tennis courts, pool cabanas, beach hammocks, floating dock bar, water sports, three restaurants, and so much more. Courtesy of Four Seasons Nevis Courtesy of Hanna Flanagan Play Hike to Nevis Peak: It was physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting—and practically a straight climb up the muddy mountain—but the overwhelming sense of accomplishment I felt after finally reaching the top was so worth the pain and three days of soreness. So, this might be a hot take, but the grueling Nevis Peak hike was actually a real highlight for me. (If that doesn’t convince you, the hotel can hook you up with a much less strenuous two-hour hike instead.) Other popular adventure-filled excursions at Golden Rock Inn include snorkeling, fishing, mountain biking, ATV tours, and horseback riding. Courtesy of Hanna Flanagan Rum tasting at the Four Seasons: During the class, you’ll enjoy some delicious spirits (no, seriously—I usually am not a dark liquor fan but I drank every single one) from around the world while learning about the rich history of rum in Nevis and the rest of the Caribbean with the resort’s master mixologist and overall good time gal, Kendie Williams. Spa Under the Stars: Another must-do—and worth-the-splurge—activity at the Four Seasons is their Spa Under the Stars experience where you’ll have the entire outdoor spa to yourself. The romantic and peaceful night includes a volcanic stone whirlpool, a Japanese-inspired cold plunge pool and Sala Deck (aka a chill outdoor area), a Nevisian Massage around the garden pool, and a candle-lit dinner. If you decide to book Spa Under the Stars with your partner (or potential partner ), I can almost guarantee that it’ll be one of the most romantic nights of your life. Explore the island’s history: You’ll be delighted to learn that Founding Father of the United States—and the inspo behind that kinda popular Lin Manuel Miranda musical—Alexander Hamilton was born on the island of Nevis and lived there until he was about seven years old. (Is “dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean” ringing a bell for anyone?!). Anyway, the island preserved his childhood home and turned it into a must-see historic site called the Museum of Nevis History in the capital city of Charlestown. When you have some free time during your trip, I highly recommend paying it a visit! This content is imported from Instagram. Eat The Rocks at Golden Rock Inn: It’s known for serving up bright and bold traditional Caribbean food with a global flare. You can’t go wrong with the crab cakes, spicy lobster tail, or green curry shrimp with coconut lemon grass, but my fave item on the menu was the chunky conch chowder. Courtesy of Golden Rock Inn A variety of Four Seasons dining experiences: Meanwhile, over at the Four Seasons, you’ll get to choose between Caribbean cuisine at Mango, locally-sourced Caribbean food and American bar food at On The Dune, and a Mediterranean menu at Esquilina, in addition to poolside bites and room service. As for drinks, expect rum, rum, and more rum. No matter where you go on the island, you better believe sweet and refreshing rum punches will be f-l-o-w-i-n-g. This content is imported from Instagram. Passion, located in Cox Village near the Botanical Gardens of Nevis, is an off-site spot you must check out for authentic and fresh Caribbean cuisine. It’s def a hidden gem and super casual eatery, but you gotta book a res and try the grouper in a buttery Creole sauce (and a rum punch, ofc). Dairy Products May Prevent Type 2 Diabetes Processed Meats Raise Risk Medical News Today
Dairy Products May Prevent Type 2 Diabetes, Processed Meats Raise Risk – Medical News Today https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/dairy-products-may-prevent-type-2-diabetes-processed-meats-raise-risk-medical-news-today/ A new study links dairy products with a reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes and red and processed meats with a higher risk. Wanwisa Hernandez/EyeEm/Getty Images About 90–95% of all diagnosed diabetes cases are type 2 diabetes, according to the CDC. A new meta-analysis links low fat dairy products with a reduced risk of developing T2D. The study correlated red and processed meats with a greater T2D risk while finding suitable protein alternatives in fish and eggs. Other experts have said that T2D may be a reversible condition through diet and lifestyle interventions. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated — 37 million Americans — live with diabetes, and over 1 in 3 people have prediabetes. Type 2 diabetes (T2D), the most prevalent form of diabetes, develops when the body becomes resistant to the insulin the pancreas produces or when the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood glucose levels. Diabetes can increase the risk of health complications, including cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, stroke, blindness, and circulatory issues, which could necessitate the amputation of toes, feet, or a part of the leg. In a new study, researchers at the University of Naples Federico II in Naples, Italy, have gathered evidence showing that certain foods can cut the risk of T2D onset. Annalisa Giosuè, Ph.D., of the institution’s Department of Clinical Medicine, spearheaded an extensive investigation to explore the relationship between different animal-based foods and the condition. Giosuè presented her team’s findings at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) conference in September. Current for T2D prevention recommend limited intake of most animal products. However, research suggests that certain animal products might offer health benefits for lowering T2D risk. Type 2 diabetes is one of the major causes of diet-related death worldwide. Learning more about how different dietary components increase or decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes is key to its prevention,” Dr. Giosuè told Medical News Today. To that end, Giosuè and colleagues examined 13 existing meta-analyses that studied which foods were linked to increased risk of T2D. They said that this type of “review of reviews” pulls together one of the most comprehensive levels of evidence possible in medical research. The 13 meta-analyses provided estimates of how 12 different animal-based foods may elevate or lower the risk of developing T2D. Categories included: total meat red meat white meat processed meat total dairy full-fat dairy low fat dairy fish milk cheese yogurt eggs Daily consumption of 100 grams (3.53 ounces) of total meat was associated with a 20% higher risk. The same amount of red meat was associated with a 22% increase in risk. Half that amount of processed meats, such as deli meat, bacon, and sausages, may have contributed to a 30% increase in T2D risk. MNT asked Dr. Giosuè why red and processed meats affect how the body processes blood sugar: “Meat, particularly red and processed meats, is a relevant source of saturated fatty acids, cholesterol, advanced [glycation end] products, and heme [animal-derived] iron, which are known to promote chronic subclinical inflammation and impair insulin sensitivity — the capacity of the cells to properly respond to insulin stimulation by absorbing glucose from the blood, thus lowering glycemic levels.” Giosuè further explained that sodium, nitrates, and nitrites in processed meats might “not only damage insulin-producing pancreatic cells but also induce oxidative stress and vascular dysfunction, which, in turn, [reduce] the sensitivity of the cells to insulin.” On the other hand, 50 g (1.76 oz) of white meat, which includes chicken and turkey, corresponded with only a 4% higher T2D risk. Dr. Giosuè said she believes this is because this meat has less fat, a healthier fatty acid profile, and less animal-derived iron. Dr. Giosuè and her team found that dairy foods might offer protection against T2D or have no effect on its onset. Consumption of 200 g (almost 1 cup) of milk was associated with a 10% lower risk of T2D, and 100 g (3.52 oz) of yogurt correlated with a 6% risk reduction. A cup of total dairy and low fat dairy were each associated with a 5% and 3% reduced T2D risk, respectively. However, the meta-analyses showed that cheese and full-fat dairy had no effect on T2D risk. The quality of the evidence was low to moderate, though. During the interview with MNT, Dr. Giosuè mentioned several benefits of regularly eating dairy products: “Nutritionally speaking, dairy products are a source of nutrients, vitamins, and other components (namely calcium, proteins, peptides, etc.) with potential beneficial effects on glucose metabolism. For instance, whey protein in milk has a well-known effect on the modulation of the rise of glucose blood levels after meals, and also on the control of appetite and body weight.” “Protective effects in relation to body weight gain and obesity — drivers of type 2 diabetes development — have [also] been reported for probiotics, which can be found in yogurt, the other dairy item whose consumption is associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes,” she continued. Other low quality evidence suggested that neither daily 100 g servings of fish nor one egg per day impact T2D risk significantly. The current study adds credence that limiting or avoiding the consumption of animal-based foods, namely red and processed meat, can help prevent T2D. “Our findings on the most suitable intake of animal foods to prevent type 2 diabetes incidence are highly concordant with the features of the Mediterranean diet, which is the plant-based dietary pattern that has more consistently shown over time the potential to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.” – Annalisa Giosuè, Ph.D., lead researcher of the study Dr. Roy Taylor, a physician, author, professor, and director of Newcastle Magnetic Resonance Centre at Newcastle University in the U.K, not involved in the current study, argued in a September 2022 podcast that the wide availability of “cheaper” and more accessible processed foods is driving the spike in T2D cases. He was especially concerned about the increase in cases among children. T2D is considered a chronic condition, though there is evidence to suggest that it may be reversible through diet and lifestyle modifications, according to the American Diabetes Association. Numerous studies, including , have shown a link between consumption of ultra-processed foods and increased risk of T2D. Other research has shown that interventions like a low calorie diet, physical activity, or bariatric surgery may be effective for reversing T2D. While more research is needed to determine whether a mostly plant-based diet, such as the Mediterranean diet, could reverse T2D, a growing body of evidence shows that a Mediterranean-style diet may help prevent or delay the progression of the condition. The Italian researchers acknowledged that the 13 meta-analyses included inferior data in some cases. Thus, they are hesitant to offer “solid recommendations” for T2D prevention based on their study at this time. Nevertheless, Dr. Giosuè commented: “Our study gives further support to the belief that a plant-based dietary pattern including limited intakes of meat, moderate intakes of fish, eggs and full-fat dairy and the habitual consumption of yogurt, milk or low fat dairy, might represent the most feasible, sustainable and definitely successful population strategy to optimize the prevention of type 2 diabetes.”

Treasury Warns Against Russia’s Efforts To Evade Sanctions With Crypto – CNBC https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/treasury-warns-against-russias-efforts-to-evade-sanctions-with-crypto-cnbc/ Ether has hugely outperformed bitcoin since both cryptocurrencies formed a bottom in June 2022. Ether’s superior gains have come as investors anticipate a major upgrade to the ethereum blockchain called “the merge.” Yuriko Nakao | Getty Images Russian President Vladimir Putin could use cryptocurrencies to evade U.S. and other sanctions launched against the Kremlin for its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, a Treasury official told lawmakers Tuesday. “Yes, Senator, that’s possible,” said Elizabeth Rosenberg, Treasury’s Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing And Financial Crimes, said when Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., asked her if digital assets could be used to skirt sanctions. The Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs convened the hearing to discuss the next steps for deterrents against Russia’s continued aggression against Ukraine, such as the seizure of assets from Russian oligarchs and the G7 agreement to cap the price of Russian oil. Warren said she’d been concerned about the possibility of cryptocurrency being used by Russian elites to bypass sanctions since the country invaded in February. “Back then we already knew that countries like North Korea had used crypto to skirt sanctions and launder at least hundreds of millions of dollars. And Russia could easily be part of that,” Warren said. The Treasury Department has already identified Russian entities attempting to circumvent sanctions with crypto. Twenty-two individuals and two entities, including a neo-Nazi paramilitary group, were designated this month for helping Russia digitally finance the war on Ukraine. In April, the agency targeted a virtual currency mining agency for the first time, along with oligarch Konstantin Malofeyev, privately owned commercial bank Public Joint Stock Company Transkapitalbank and 40 other individuals and entities led by Malofeyev. Russia-based Darknet Market Hydra and Garantex, a virtual currency exchange, were also sanctioned that month partly to cut off avenues for potential sanctions evasion. The U.S. government blocked access to all of their assets based in the U.S. or that are held by someone who resides in the U.S. Treasury also blocked transactions between those who are sanctioned and with anyone within the U.S. But Russia planned ahead by developing its own digital currency as early as February in hopes of trading directly with countries that will accept the funds without first converting to dollars. The country also developed tools to mask the origins of transactions since crypto exchanges can be tracked on the underlying blockchain. Rosenberg confirmed that anonymity-enhancing technologies and other tools used to hide digital transactions can interfere with sanctions enforcement. Treasury issued its first-ever sanctions on these “mixers” in May and sanctioned another, “Tornado Cash,” in August. Warren mentioned that Coinbase, a leading U.S. cryptocurrency exchange platform, filed a lawsuit this month against the Treasury Department on behalf of Tornado Cash users. Coinbase’s chief legal officer, Paul Grewal, told CNBC that the sanctions set “a dangerous precedent,” but Rosenberg called them effective. “When they can serve as a deterrent to any criminal (who) would seek to use a mixer in order to launder their funds, the proceeds of corruption or any criminal activity, that’s an effective avenue that we can use in order to signal that we cannot tolerate money laundering,” Rosenberg said.
