U.S. Two-Year Yield At Almost 15-Year High Before Fed Meeting – Reuters https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/u-s-two-year-yield-at-almost-15-year-high-before-fed-meeting-reuters/ U.S. One dollar banknotes are seen in front of displayed stock graph in this illustration taken, February 8, 2021. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com NEW YORK, Sept 20 (Reuters) – The yield on two-year U.S. Treasury notes, a rough gauge of interest rate expectations, rose to almost a 15-year high on Tuesday, a day before the Federal Reserve is likely to hike rates by 75 basis points as it continues to fight inflation. The two-year is highly sensitive to shifts in monetary policy expectations and early on Tuesday it hit 3.992%. The last time its yield broke above 4% was Oct. 18, 2007. The Fed is due to announce its latest policy decision on Wednesday. Money markets are fully pricing in a 75 basis point rate hike, with the chance of a larger full-point rate hike fading to just 16%, according to CME’s FedWatch tool. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Sweden’s central bank earlier raised rates by a larger-than-expected full percentage point to 1.75% and warned of more to come as it joins other central banks around the world that also are jacking up rates to tame inflation. read more Fed Chair Jerome Powell will stand by his hawkish stance and desist offering a moderate tone that has driven recent post-meeting rallies, said Johan Grahn, head of ETF strategy at AllianzIM. “I don’t think you’re going to see even a single dovish feather. He’s tried that a couple of times and then he gets the exact opposite from the market,” Grahn said. Yields on the benchmark 10-year Treasury shot to 3.604% before paring some gains. They were up 8.6 basis points to 3.575% after topping 3.5% for the first time in 11 years on Monday. The two-year yield rose 2.5 basis points to 3.971%. The 10-year moving higher and faster than the two-year could be positioning ahead of Wednesday’s Fed statement or it could be Sweden’s Riksbank raising rates more than expected, said Lawrence Gillum, fixed income strategist at LPL Financial. “What’s happening for the Fed and other central banks is there’s a push to front-load these rate hikes,” Gillum said. “There’s a lot of jitters and some pre-positioning that’s going into (Wednesday’s) meeting,” Gillum added. “Foreign rates moving higher, that makes our rates less attractive.” The closely watched gap between two- and 10-year yields earlier reached a discount of as much as -47.5 basis points, approaching its most negative since Aug. 10 when the discount widened to -56.2 basis points. The gap later narrowed to -39.8 basis points. The two- and 10-year yield inversion, when the short end is higher than the long end, often has been seen as a reliable predictor of a recession in a year or two. After the Fed statement on Wednesday the market will try to gauge whether the central bank will raise rates by 50 basis points in November, said Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise Financial in Troy, Michigan. “I don’t think they’re going to communicate that, but I think the market will try to anticipate that and if they do, then you could see over the coming months some equilibrium level in rates,” Saglimbene said. “The terminal rate at which the Fed will stop raising interest rates is higher, and that terminal rate is likely to last longer,” Saglimbene added. “All of it is centered around inflation pressures that are more persistent.” Tighter monetary policy is pushing rates up and different securities are setting new milestones. The breakeven rate on five- and 10-year Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, or TIPS, have surged to 13- and 12-year highs, respectively. The five-year TIPS breakeven rate was last at 2.546%, while the 10-year TIPS breakeven rate was last at 2.403%. The latter indicates the market sees inflation averaging about 2.4% a year for the next decade. The yield on the 30-year Treasury bond rose 7.2 basis points to 3.577%. The U.S. dollar five years forward inflation-linked swap , seen by some as a better gauge of inflation expectations due to possible distortions caused by the Fed’s quantitative easing, was last at 2.410%. The Treasury sold $12 billion in 20-year bonds with a high yield of 3.82%. The auction was “pretty well bid,” with yield about 1.5 basis points lower than the market at the bidding deadline, Lou Brien, market strategist at DRW Trading, said in a note. Alpinestars Tech-Air 10 Airbag System Cycle News
Alpinestars Tech-Air 10 Airbag System Cycle News
Alpinestars Tech-Air 10 Airbag System – Cycle News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/alpinestars-tech-air-10-airbag-system-cycle-news/ Rennie Scaysbrook | September 20, 2022 The 3/4-length Tech-Air 10 is Alpinestars’ latest in airbag technology that can now be had by the everyday rider. The Tech-Air 10 can go under any suit (Alpinestars or not), so long as it’s designed to stretch accordingly. The electronic status of the suit can be checked via the wireless display on the belt. You can take that off and put it anywhere on the bike if you like to see it at a glance quickly. This is a stand-alone system (hence the compatibility with multiple different suits), offering back, chest and hip protection whereas the zip-in Tech-Air Race covers only the top half of the rider’s body. The company is claiming a 95 percent reduction in impact force transferred to the body with the Tech-Air 10. The system has 12 (nine accelerometers and three gyros) sensors to measure impact, and the airbag will inflate between 20-40 milliseconds. You can get up to three deployments per airbag (although at that point, you might want to consider rider training as an option). CE Level 2 armor is used in the back and chest protector. Level 2 CE protection is used in the back and chest protector, with the suit itself constructed using mixed sections of stretch spandex, stretch mesh spandex 3D mesh and lycra. You no longer need to wear an under suit if you don’t want to, and you can pair the suit to the Tech-Air app that monitors the system and battery status, as well as trip information, ride stats like GPS tracking, distance, speed, etc.   Alpinestars Tech-Air 10 Airbag System MSRP: $999.95 Standout Feature:Full MotoGP-spec protection now for Joe Blow   Excellent safety coverage   Compatible with multiple suits   Is a bit cramped when stuffed into a full road-racing suit Alpinestars Tech-Air 10 Airbag System | Rider Analysis When I was watching practice for the 2017 Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas, Maverick Vinales had a small get off. “Nothing out of the ordinary,” I thought. Then I looked at his suit. All of a sudden, Maverick had child-bearing hips and I realized he was wearing the latest ¾ length version of the Alpinestars Tech-Air airbag system. Fast forward five years and now it’s you and I who can have childbearing hips. A few more wears and Rennie thinks the suit will feel a bit looser and more comfortable. I’m a big fanboy of airbag systems, and it feels a little odd if I venture out onto the track without one these days (I’ve had some belting crashes in airbag suits and know how well they work). The Tech-Air 10 is substantially different to the Tech-Air Race garment I’ve been wearing at Cycle News for the past five years or so. I got quite used to the Tech-Air Race, especially the one in my white Racing Absolute suit that’s been featured on these pages so many times, the bulk of which just became a normal part of the suit. The Tech-Air 10 provides far superior protection than the Tech-Air Race does. Three-quarter length protection is a real achievement the company should be proud of, but I found the airbag to be a bit cramped when wearing it in the Fusion one-piece suit. Before I go on, I must note that the suit was brand new and had not had much chance to break in, and when putting a full airbag undergarment in, things can get a bit tight. On the bike I found I got used to it after a while, but I was never as comfortable as when I wore my Tech-Air Race. That’s simply because there’s so much more protection around my hips and upper legs—something I’ve never had before—so that took some time to get used to. I think after a few more wears, I’ll adapt to the Tech-Air 10, as I did the Tech-Air Race after a career of never wearing an airbag. The fit is a very personal thing and some others on this test with me did not have this issue. However, there is absolutely no denying the benefit the Tech-Air 10 system brings. This is the best technology currently available to the buying public for racetrack safety, and even if you never venture on track, you can still have it for the road by switching algorithms.CN Click here to read the Alpinestars Tech-Air 10 Airbag System Review in the Cycle News Digital Edition Magazine.   Click here for more New Products on Cycle News.

Gaming Out The Metaverse POLITICO POLITICO
Gaming Out The Metaverse POLITICO POLITICO
Gaming Out The Metaverse – POLITICO – POLITICO https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/gaming-out-the-metaverse-politico-politico/ Roblox, the online game platform that boasts a user base comprised largely of children under 13 and numbering in the hundreds of millions, is trying to grow along with its audience. The Roblox Corporation announced at its developer conference this month that it will soon allow brands to directly purchase in-game advertising, creating a massive opportunity for companies eager to hook a tech-savvy young audience — and sending shivers down the spines of many parents. Gaming will be central to the construction of a metaverse, which raises glaringly obvious questions about safety, privacy, and content moderation. Games like Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft are the most mature examples of what metaverse architects envision for an immersive online world; Fortnite developer Epic Games has raised billions largely on the back of its metaverse ambitions. Some politicians have already taken notice and asked federal consumer watchdogs to keep an eye out. In February of this year, a group of legislators led by Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) sent a letter to the FTC urging it to use its “full authority” to protect minors from both “manipulation” and privacy or safety violations. FTC commissioner Lina Khan responded to Markey in a letter saying that children’s use of VR gaming platforms poses “serious risks” including the use of “dark patterns” meant to algorithmically manipulate users into purchases or other decisions. Washington keeping a wary eye on the gaming industry is nothing new. In the early 1990s the U.S. Senate held hearings on the rise of increasingly violent video games, leading to the creation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board that still classifies games by age group today. America has now largely made its peace with decapitations, dismemberment, and other forms of simulated gruesomeness, but the ways in which online gaming spaces can materially affect child health and privacy are still relatively under-policed and -understood. (Last week the Department of Homeland Security awarded a $700,000 grant to researchers investigating political extremism in online gaming spaces.) Each of those issues will only become a bigger deal in a virtual space like the metaverse, where not only are interactions more unpredictable and intimate than they appear on our current-day screens, but the devices that enable them collect voluminous amounts of data that make smartphones look discreet by comparison. Protecting children is, at least notionally, a rare point of unanimous bipartisan agreement. That makes video games an unexpected frontline for the early debates over exactly what the metaverse should be, who should be allowed to use it, and how. “In a digital society it’s impossible to wall children off from the internet entirely and expect them to do well,” said Will Duffield, a policy analyst at the Cato Institute who focuses on online speech. “It needs to be more a question of how children are educated in healthy, responsible, safe internet use, rather than how to best wall them off.” Colorado’s Gov. Jared Polis, America’s first self-proclaimed “gamer governor,” announced this week that residents of his state will now be able to pay their state taxes in cryptocurrency. Polis, who has been mulling the idea for some time, announced the development yesterday. A state spokesperson confirmed today the system is now live. The state’s revenue website now lists “cryptocurrency” under its accepted payment methods, specifying most notably that payments can only be made through personal PayPal accounts, and only one type of cryptocurrency can be used per invoice (i.e., no mixing and matching the four cryptocurrencies currently accepted by PayPal: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin). The only two other states to have moved decisively toward crypto tax payments are Utah, which passed a law ordering it to be accepted by the beginning of next year, and Ohio, where a crypto portal set up by former State Treasurer (and Republican Senate primary candidate) Josh Mandel was shut down in 2019 amid questions about its legality. It hasn’t exactly been a good media cycle for Clearview AI, the facial-recognition software company whose signature product is now restricted or banned in a laundry list of countries. Now, the European Parliament might be gearing up to ban it at large scale. POLITICO’s Clothide Goujard reported this morning for Pro subscribers that Renew Europe, a liberal group that’s one of the Parliament’s largest, now largely supports such a ban, putting it in line with left-wing members who have long called for one. Like in the United States, that puts them at odds with law enforcement agencies eager to use its tools for surveillance and apprehension. (The center-right European People’s Party, Clothilde writes, is now all but isolated in its efforts to allow further use of facial recognition by police.) Stateside, Vermont became the first state to ban facial recognition in 2020, and 17 localities (including one county, King in Washington) have passed similar laws. Elon Musk wants to bring Starlink satellite service to Iran, despite current sanctions. Meanwhile stateside, Tesla is planning to start deploying a line of humanoid factory robots. AI-powered image generator DALL-E can now edit human faces. Nasdaq is entering the crypto business. A computer scientist argues that ambitious AI developers should think small, too. June Wurden Dies At Age 88 Leaving Legacy In Kitsap Kitsap Sun
June Wurden Dies At Age 88 Leaving Legacy In Kitsap Kitsap Sun
June Wurden Dies At Age 88, Leaving Legacy In Kitsap – Kitsap Sun https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/june-wurden-dies-at-age-88-leaving-legacy-in-kitsap-kitsap-sun/ Terry Mosher  |  Sports columnist It would take a large book to compile all the accomplishments and the legacy of June Rose (Edgar) Wurden, and even then we would miss much. Suffice to say, Wurden, who died of a stroke on Aug. 28 while playing tennis at the age of 88 on her home court in the Brownsville area, was much loved and respected as a person that gave much of herself to many and lived life to the fullest.  She designed and helped build the home her and Ed, her loving husband of 68 years, lived in since 1971. The home is a “Wurden Wonderland” for bocce ball, pool, miniature golf, basketball, darts, bowling, beach volleyball, shuffleboard, horseshoes, badminton, ping pong and a batting cage to keep visitors busy when they are not gathered around a large barbecue pit.   Wurden loved flowers and it is said she would nearly buy out a store of their flowers and would plant as many as 300 at a time. She lovingly nurtured a rose garden into a beautiful landscape.  And Wurden converted their garage into a music room, housing a collection of everything music that inspired her to play and to give lessons on numerous instruments. That led to weekly music played by music lovers and friends. They would arrive ready and sit around the basketball court and play for hours.   Then there were the parties. Up to 100 guests or more would gather for a potluck with her homemade pies and cookies the stars of the show. She would whip up those delicious treats easily and so quick it would make taste buds spin.  “She would make pies before anybody even knew she had put in the oven 10 to 15 pies and baked cookies for family gatherings and potlucks,” says daughter Julie Jablonski. “She would make scalloped potato and salads and we would have anywhere from 40 to 120 over several times a year.”  Why did Wurden do so much for so many?  “She liked to make her corner of the world a better place, to enjoy with family and friends,” says Jablonski.   Wurden was used to going big. She grew up in Pasco as the youngest of nine children and was into everything, including being named Miss Pasco in 1952, Benton County Rodeo queen and the 1953 Queen of the Inland Empire.  So it was not unusual for her to wade into a crowd and make them feel comfortable.  Wurden was a natural athlete before girls were supposed to be competitive athletes (it wasn’t until 1972 that the federal enactment of Title IX forced schools receiving federal money to provide programs for women). One of her four sons, Glen, said his mother was good at anything that had a ball. It was best not to challenge Wurden to a game of H-O-R-S-E unless you were a glutton for punishment. She could play.  She started hitting a tennis ball against a garage door at the age of nine and that felt so good she found ways to actually play tennis and it quickly became her love, her lifelong passion.   Wurden became well known around Pasco for her skill at tennis and became an avid player, swarming over tennis courts everywhere en route to becoming one of the better players in the Pacific Northwest. At the age of 80 Wurden won the USTA National championship for her age group at the national tournament in Vancouver, Washington. She also won numerous singles and doubles championships in the Pacific Northwest over the years.  She was so good she bet her children — five of them, Glen, Frank, Rocky, Julie and Frank — while they were growing up that they couldn’t beat her.  “She had a standing bet with us that if we could beat her she would pay us $100,” says Glen. “That was a lot of money back then.”  History tells us nobody won the $100.  It was her incredible tennis ability and force of personality that got her inducted into the Kitsap Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.   A side note: All the Wurden children are intellectually gifted. They are stories in themselves. Glen, for example, is at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, where he leads the fusion energy sciences team in the P-24 Plasma Physics. Don’t ask me what that means. It’s way above my intellectual grade.  “They are all unique,” says retired Bremerton doctor Robert Vanderwilde, a longtime friend of the Wurdens.  Another good Kitsap County tennis player, Jack Dunn, played often at the Wurden court and teamed with June in doubles competition all over the globe, winning titles. Dunn was a world champion at one time and is now 94 (he will be 95 next month) and living in Arizona.  “I knew June for 60 years,” says Dunn. “I met her at the (Bremerton) tennis club. She and her family had moved to Bremerton (from Alderwood Manor) and she joined the club. Dick Danubio and I were playing on the new outdoor court and she came out of the club and introduced herself.  “She would rather play (tennis) with the men. She was an accomplished tennis player. Then later she built her own tennis court and invited anybody and everybody out to play tennis. We gradually got together and probably played 25 tournaments together in mixed doubles. We didn’t quite win them all, but came close.”  Wurden was a go-getter. She didn’t wait for things to change. She changed them. While living in Alderwood Wurden was discouraged by the lack of tennis players, so she started the Snohomish County Community Tennis Association and built her first tennis court at her house (that she also designed).  She became a tennis coach for Central Kitsap and continued to help out the team right up to the end, supplying anything a prospective player might need. She felt a strong desire to get as many involved with the sport as possible, no matter what it took to do so.  Wurden also was her own real estate broker, starting the first computer-based realty company (June R. Wurden Computer Realty) in which she made property investments, some with retired doctor Bob Yekel, who played trombone with her music group.  “We started playing tennis together at the tennis club in the early ‘70s” says Yekel. “I played on her tennis court many times. She was a very, very good tennis player.  “She concentrated on the real estate company and did very, very well. We sold some property together and bought some property together. She was a woman that was always busy. She was just so dynamic and got so much done, more than any woman I ever knew.”  There are many untold stories about Wurden, but his one needs to be told. June purchased a baby grand piano. Not to be outdone, Ed, whose love of boats rivaled his wife’s love of music, purchased a boat and called it Ed’s Piano.  The end for Wurden was unexpected. Hiyam Vanderwilde was playing doubles against Wurden when she suddenly didn’t feel well.   “She was in the middle of her third serve when she said, ‘I feel dizzy.’ Immediately I and my partner got her to the ball basket so she could hang on it. I went to get a glass of water and when I came back she was slurring her words. June had told my partner not to call 911, but then she said to call them.”  By the time the EMTs got there, Wurden was unresponsive.  Her lost is heartbreaking to many in the community and elsewhere. She was everything to a lot of people.  “What is there not to be attracted to June?” asks Vanderwilde. “She was the most loving, considerate and energetic. You name it she would do anything for anybody.  “She affected so many people in Kitsap County – music-wise, tennis-wise, party wise. She was so loving and welcoming. I can’t say enough about her. She touched so many lives you can’t even count them.”  The family requests you don’t send flowers. There are already plenty of them. Instead, plant a rose bush on your property in her honor or donate to Olympic College Foundation for music scholarships or to Central Kitsap’s ASB for the school’s tennis program. A celebration of life will be held in 2023.  Terry Mosher writes about local sports personalities for the Kitsap Sun. Contact him at bigmosher@msn.com.

Dutch King Unveils Billions In Aid Amid Soaring Inflation – 69News WFMZ-TV https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/dutch-king-unveils-billions-in-aid-amid-soaring-inflation-69news-wfmz-tv/ THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Dutch King Willem-Alexander unveiled plans Tuesday from the Dutch government to help households squeezed by rising costs, in his annual address to the nation. Inflation, energy prices and the war in Ukraine were just some of the “uncertainties” the country is facing, the monarch said in his annual speech, made every year on the third Tuesday in September. The speech is immediately followed by the release of the budget for the upcoming year. Boos could be heard from the crowd as the royal family — just back from the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in London — traveled from their palace in The Hague to the National Theater by horse-drawn carriage in a pomp-filled ceremony. “People are feeling increasingly uncertain about both the immediate and the longer-term future,” the king said, speaking to a joint sitting of both houses of parliament. He pledged an 18 billion euro ($17.9 million) aid package to help low- and middle-income households. Notably missing from the budget was an energy price cap that politicians and energy companies reached an agreement on Monday, although the king alluded to the plan in his speech. As recently as last week, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte was resistant to the idea of a cap, saying any help would have to wait until the new year. The measure sets a price ceiling for gas and electricity based on average use from January 2022. The government expects the limit to save households an average of 190 euros ($189) per month. Around 10,000 people turned out to watch the procession, which took place for the first time since 2019 after two years of pandemic restrictions. Elementary schools in The Hague were closed so children could participate in the festivities. “I just want to see the horses,” 3-year-old Emma told The Associated Press while waiting behind barricades along the route. For the first time, Princess Amelia accompanied her parents. She turned 18 this year and is now expected to pick up a number of royal duties. Not everyone was happy with the day. Protesters held signs saying “Not my king” and “Rutte must go.” One man carrying an upside-down Dutch flag, a symbol of anti-government protests, described his struggle with soaring gas bills and supermarket prices. The police reported five people were arrested and they confiscated six tractors. Farmers, upset about environmental regulations restricting their operations, have been protesting over the past year by driving their tractors into The Hague. Last week, the city announced that no large vehicles would be allowed on the streets as a security measure. Echoing the king’s sober sentiment, Finance Minister Sigrid Kaag told reporters, “It is not a festive time for many Dutch people” when she presented the official budget. The package includes an increase in the minimum wage, a reduction in income tax levels and an expansion of child and health care subsidies. The new budget includes 3.9 billion euros ($3.9 billion) for Ukraine, in both military and humanitarian aid. Last month, the Dutch sent 90 soldiers to provide basic training for Ukrainian military personnel. The government has also allotted one billion euros ($1 billion) to build housing for refugees. Hundreds of asylum-seekers have been sleeping outside of an asylum reception center in squalid conditions because there aren’t enough beds. Bold hats could be seen around the city as part of the annual “hoedjesparade,” a tradition where women wear striking headgear to the event. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Nashville Yards Entertainment Complex To Host Live Music, Cinema, More – Tennessean https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/nashville-yards-entertainment-complex-to-host-live-music-cinema-more-tennessean/ A dine-in cinema with 12 screens will share a new downtown entertainment complex with bowling lanes, gaming activities and a restaurant in the massive Nashville Yards project underway downtown. Austin-based EVO Entertainment Group announced Tuesday that it will open the “experiential entertainment venue” in late 2024. A 4,500-capacity live music venue will also be part of the new destination. The group didn’t list an address, but said the complex will take up an entire floor of an office building in the center of Nashville Yards. Shopping and dining offerings will surround the development. The project is in partnership with AEG and San Diego-based Southwest Value Partners, which is developing the 18-acre Yards next to downtown and north of the Gulch. New streets and a public park are also part of the sprawling collection of new office and apartment towers, hotels and shops. “Nashville is a world-class entertainment and hospitality destination, and we can’t wait to be a part of this community,” said EVO Entertainment Group CEO Mitch Roberts. “I’ve kept an eye on the progress at Nashville Yards since it was first announced and the dynamic, multi-faceted venue that Southwest Value Partners and AEG are creating is a perfect fit for EVO.” The project will include private screening rooms and other event spaces. “There is no cinema experience like EVO’s in this part of the country, and we’re thrilled to bring their elevated entertainment offerings to Nashville Yards. EVO perfectly aligns with our healthy living, healthy working and hospitality focus,” said SVP Managing Partner Cary Mack. “With something for everyone, from a state-of-the-art, dine-in cinema to private event spaces, EVO Entertainment Nashville Yards will be a destination and is a terrific addition to the brands and tenants selecting Nashville Yards as home.” EVO Entertainment launched in 2014, “to transform the movie-going experience,” and today has 19 locations in five states, company officials said. This will be EVO’s first foray into Tennessee.

NFL Week 3 Power Rankings: Tua Tagovailoa’s Dolphins May Be For Real; 49ers Crack Top 10 With Jimmy Garoppolo – CBS Sports https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/nfl-week-3-power-rankings-tua-tagovailoas-dolphins-may-be-for-real-49ers-crack-top-10-with-jimmy-garoppolo-cbs-sports/ Pete Prisco is starting to think he might have been wrong about Tua, but a massive test awaits Sep 20, 2022 at 2:40 pm ET • 1 min read There are those who can’t ever admit they are wrong, some of whom I work with here at CBS Sports. (See: tall quarterback who played at Notre Dame.) I am not one of those who can’t admit being wrong. So here it goes: I think I might have been wrong about Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Notice the word might. The reason it’s there is because even after his amazing six-touchdown performance Sunday to rally the Dolphins from 21 points down in the fourth quarter to beat the Baltimore Ravens 42-38, it’s just one game. It certainly was a special performance, throwing for 469 yards and those six scores, but doing it against a Ravens defense that was abysmal helped. Having said all that, Tagovailoa was impressive. He picked out the open guys, made timely throws, seemed calm and cool in doing so and had the look of a passer who might just have had his moment that will allow his career to take off. But here’s the other side of it: let’s see him do it again this week against the Buffalo Bills. That doesn’t mean throwing for 400 and six scores, but if he can go for 300 and two and win the game, now we’re on to something. One game won’t change a narrative. But it helps. In a big way. Tagovailoa did that Sunday. In doing so, he has his team at 2-0 as the Dolphins ready for that monster game this week with Josh Allen and the Bills. The Dolphins are up to No. 8 in my Power Rankings, seven spots behind the top-rated Bills. Allen was once like Tua, trying to prove his worth. There were many who doubted whether Allen could become a legitimate NFL starter, let alone a star. A lot of those skeptics have never admitted they were wrong. If Tagovailoa beats the Bills and puts up another eye-opening stat line, it could be time for me to do just that. Saying the word wrong isn’t that hard. It’s just that now, based on one game, isn’t the time — although it could be coming. Biggest Movers Rk Teams   Chg Rcrd 1 Bills They left no doubt Monday night against the Titans as to who the best team is right now. But now they face a tough road test at Miami on a short week. That won’t be easy. — 2-0-0 2 Chiefs They weren’t as crisp on offense against the Chargers, but they still found a way. The defense made some huge plays in that game to win it. — 2-0-0 3 Buccaneers The good news is the defense has been dominant. The bad news is the offense, without some key pieces, has just one touchdown in two games. — 2-0-0 4 Eagles As long as Jalen Hurts continues to play at a high level, they are a legit Super Bowl contender. The defense was better against Minnesota as well. — 2-0-0 5 Packers They got the offense going against the Bears, which is a good sign. They will be just fine on that side of the ball. 4 1-1-0 6 Chargers They had their chances against the Chiefs, but need to do a better job of closing out games when they have a lead. Justin Herbert’s rib injury bears watching, especially facing a good Jaguars defense. 1 1-1-0 7 Rams They impressed early against the Falcons, but they made it interesting with some bad special-teams play. The defense has to be better. 3 1-1-0 8 Dolphins They are 2-0 and one of the early-season stories of this season. It becomes a much bigger story if they beat the Bills this week. 4 2-0-0 9 49ers With Trey Lance out for the year with a broken ankle, it’s Jimmy Garoppolo time. He’s won a lot of games for this team, so the move to keep him was a wise one. 4 1-1-0 10 Ravens The offense was good against Miami, but the defense was a disaster. They couldn’t cover or rush, which is a bad combination. 2 1-1-0 11 Vikings They didn’t do anything on offense against the Eagles. Then again, it was a Monday night. We know how Kirk Cousins plays on Monday night. 4 1-1-0 12 Cardinals Give them credit for battling back against the Raiders, as they were staring an 0-2 start in the face. Kyler Murray came up big, which he had to do. 9 1-1-0 13 Broncos They are struggling on offense, but the defense bailed them out against the Texans. Russell Wilson needs to pick it up starting this week against the 49ers. 7 1-1-0 14 Patriots The offense still isn’t clicking, but it did enough against the Steelers thanks to a good defensive showing. There was progress from Week 1. 8 1-1-0 15 Saints They are 1-1 and need so much more from Jameis Winston. His turnovers wasted a good showing by the Saints defense against Tampa Bay. 9 1-1-0 16 Raiders They blew a big lead in losing to the Cardinals to fall to 0-2. This is not the start Josh McDaniels expected. 1 0-2-0 17 Browns Losing the way they did to the Jets is a bad look. If they take a knee late, they win. It’s that simple. 1 1-1-0 18 Steelers How much longer can the team go with Mitch Trubisky? Not that he’s being helped much by his offensive line or his coordinator. 1 1-1-0 19 Cowboys Cooper Rush played a solid game against the Bengals, but it was a game won by the defense. Now let’s see what Rush does on the road against the Giants. 5 1-1-0 20 Giants At 2-0, the main question about them is whether they are any good. Maybe not, but the record is what it is. 3 2-0-0 21 Bengals At 0-2, is the Super hangover happening in front of our eyes? Or is it just a slow start? The good news is the division is struggling as a whole. 10 0-2-0 22 Jaguars The defense really impressed in shutting out the Colts. This team is going to be a problem for a lot of teams, but they do face a tough test this week at the Chargers. 6 1-1-0 23 Jets Give them credit for rallying to beat the Browns. Maybe Robert Saleh was on to something when he said he would keep receipts. 8 1-1-0 24 Titans They were awful against the Bills. The offense didn’t do a thing and Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry were just off. They need a victory in the worst way. 8 0-2-0 25 Colts At 0-1-1, they don’t have the look of a playoff contender. They were missing guys against the Jaguars, but they got dominated. 11 0-1-1 26 Lions They have rolled up a bunch of points on offense so far this season. They do have to get better on defense, but at least Aidan Hutchinson showed up against Washington in a big way. 4 1-1-0 27 Commanders The defense was awful against the Lions, which is not what you’d expect from this team. The Lions did what they wanted to do against them. 10 1-1-0 28 Bears It was back to reality for the Bears in losing to the Packers. They did little on offense, which you can expect at times for this young group. 3 1-1-0 29 Seahawks Geno Smith and the offense didn’t do much of anything against San Francisco. That puts a big damper on what they did in the opener. 3 1-1-0 30 Texans The defense played well against the Broncos, but they didn’t score a touchdown. You won’t win many games doing that, and Davis Mills has to be better. 1 0-1-1 31 Panthers How long does coach Matt Rhule have before this team will make a change? At 0-2, they have issues. 4 0-2-0 32 Falcons They showed well at Los Angeles against the Rams by coming back from a big deficit. They are competing, which is a good sign. — 0-2-0

Dalrada Corporation Brings Metaverse-Based Digital Ecosystem To Averett University – Business Wire https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/dalrada-corporation-brings-metaverse-based-digital-ecosystem-to-averett-university-business-wire/ SAN DIEGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Dalrada Financial Corporation (OTCQB: DFCO, “Dalrada”) announced last week its breakthrough partnership with Averett University in Virginia to design, develop, and implement a unique digital ecosystem while creating an immersive metaverse experience for students. The futuristic experience will be gifted to the university by Dalrada to help educate Averett students on the ownership of data, personalized artificial intelligence, and the effects of digital currency on an economic system. Dalrada will facilitate the metaverse experience through proprietary technology and specific tools that will ultimately lead to further learning and the understanding of the foundational technologies to establish a modern metaverse-based economic system. Dalrada is expected to invest over $2 million to create this cutting-edge Web 3.0 educational experience. The new metaverse builds on Dalrada’s existing partnership with technology incubator, imagineeer, and is made possible through a larger clean energy initiative on the Averett University campus which will also deliver significant cost savings. The effort will include digital twinning capabilities that will not only optimize energy use across the campus and capture carbon emissions reductions, but will create new educational opportunities focused on data-driven sustainability initiatives. Additionally, the partnership is expected to help Averett University tackle ongoing societal challenges – including student happiness and overall wellness. The partnership may set the bar for colleges across the country while providing students with the tools they need to be successful after graduation. Averett students will gain firsthand knowledge and experience to compete for jobs that will drive the industries of the future. According to Averett University President, Dr. Tiffany Franks, “Partnering with Dalrada will ensure that Averett does its part to foster an educational environment designed to propel our students into the digital future, preparing them to not only find jobs after they leave, but help create them as well.” Recognizing the advanced technology capabilities of the metaverse highlights its importance to organizations like college campuses: “Delivering an educational experience like this to Averett University gives us the ability to immerse students in the digital environment of the future,” said Jose Arrieta, Dalrada’s Chief Strategy Officer and President of Dalrada Technologies. “When students participate in a metaverse-based ecosystem with digital twinning capabilities, they gain immeasurable experience that will help them long after they graduate.” Echoing Dr. Franks’ sentiments, Arrieta confirmed, “Our goal is to eventually have students create the jobs of the future rather than just look for the jobs of the future.” Dalrada’s innovative approach toward digital ecosystems leverages modern capabilities that will ultimately revolutionize the scale and speed at which additional related technologies can be adopted. Our Medical Expert Shares How To Sleep Better Using These Gadgets And Supplements – FOX 31 Denver https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/our-medical-expert-shares-how-to-sleep-better-using-these-gadgets-and-supplements-fox-31-denver/ What you need to get a good night’s sleep Getting seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep each night is one of the best things you can do for your body. Unfortunately, because of work, stress or other factors, a lot of us don’t get that, and our overall health is affected. While it is possible to scour the internet for sleeping tips, we thought it would be best to talk directly to an expert. We asked Dr. Michael Huynh, M.D., what tools were available to help the average person get the proper amount of sleep needed to live a healthy life. What is sleep? We are diurnal animals. That means we are active during the day. According to Dr. Huynh, low-light conditions trigger the production of a hormone called melatonin. This is what makes us sleepy at night. Before electricity and light bulbs, people naturally fell asleep when it got dark. When the sun came out, it would trigger the body to decrease melatonin levels, so we could naturally wake up. While you are sleeping, Dr. Huynh explained that it’s not a constant state. You go through four to six cycles of non-rapid eye movement sleep and rapid eye movement sleep. During NREM, the body is not in a deep sleep. You tend to move around to prevent bedsores. Staying in one position for too long puts pressure on one area of the skin, which can break and become infected. In REM sleep, the body is paralyzed, in a sense, and you are dreaming. REM sleep is the deepest sleep. It is when you get the most rest and your brain recovers from the previous day. While doctors still aren’t 100% sure why we need sleep, one prevailing theory is that we sleep to help clear the brain of debris and plaque that build up while awake. It is currently believed that poor sleep contributes to high levels of beta-amyloid protein in the brain, which can cause the formation of amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease. What causes poor sleep? Lack of sleep can be brought about by anxiety, depression and other medical issues. However, Dr. Huynh said that prescription medicines are used to help people get better sleep in those situations, so they are beyond the scope of this article. The focus is on factors that the individual can control with behavior or other types of sleep aids. For example, anything that disrupts the natural sleep cycle can contribute to poor sleep. This includes being on a computer, looking at your phone or watching the TV at night. Poor sleep can also result from the type of work you do, taking long naps during the day, the type of lifestyle you lead or the environment in which you live. What can help you get a good night’s sleep? Blue-light-blocking glasses “There are not too many well-studied devices when it comes to what can improve sleep or sleep hygiene,” Dr. Huynh stated. “But one of the big topics is a blue-light filter, either one that is built into your device or a pair of glasses that filter out blue light.” When you use a device, such as a phone, a computer or a TV, at night, the blue light that comes from this device can keep you awake. “There is no harm in activating a blue light filter on your phone or on your screen or wearing glasses because some studies show it can help with reducing being awake for a long time.” Earplugs and white noise machines If a noisy environment keeps you from sleeping, the doctor suggested using a white noise machine to help filter out sounds that disrupt your sleep. He also recommended trying earplugs, but only if they cause no discomfort. A mouthguard If you or your partner snores, that can wake you up abruptly and disrupt your sleep, so you never reach that deep state of rest. Dr. Huynh said one of the best devices to reduce or eliminate snoring is an over-the-counter mouthguard that molds to the shape of your jaw and teeth.  “Usually, you put the mouthguard in warm water and bite into it,” he explained. “Let it cool down and harden so it can conform to the shape of your jaw and your mouth. If you are not comfortable doing that, there is a mandibular advancement device, which is a little bit more extreme than a plastic mouthguard. The mandibular advancement device pulls your lower jaw a little bit forward to open up your airway. This helps reduce snoring at night.” Blackout curtains and sleep masks If you are in an area with prolonged sunlight, Dr. Huynh recommended using blackout curtains or a sleep mask. “Both of these block light to help with better sleep hygiene,” he said.  Better pillow and mattress If your pillow holds your head up too high or lets it sink too low, it can create discomfort that decreases your ability to have a restful night’s sleep because you toss and turn. The same with your mattress. Unfortunately, not one option is best for everyone, so the doctor admitted that finding the right option might take a little trial and error.   Sunrise alarm clocks While a sunrise alarm clock isn’t an obvious answer to getting a more restful night’s sleep, Dr. Huynh pointed out that you could use it in the morning to wake you up gently. The trick is to use it consistently to reset when you wake up. He believes this could eventually readjust your sleeping pattern and your circadian rhythm, allowing you to train yourself to sleep for seven to eight hours each night. Supplements For his experience of working in a hospital where sleep is constantly disrupted, Dr. Huynh would only recommend one supplement: melatonin. While he said that 3 milligrams is usually enough, in some cases, Dr. Huynh may prescribe up to 6 mg. “Melatonin is a very safe over-the-counter supplement to take,” he said. “It just increases the melatonin amount in your body and tells your body, ‘Hey, it’s time to go to sleep.’” He cautioned about taking other supplements, mostly because the Federal Drug Administration does not regulate supplements. “That’s how they get around selling them to people without a prescription. They’re not really tested.” And some, such as kava and valerian, can cause liver failure in some cases. OTC medications While Dr. Huynh said two other effective over-the-counter sleep aids were NyQuil and Benadryl, he cautioned not to take either in excess or for a prolonged amount of time. “These medicines have an anticholinergic effect — you can get delirious or have difficulty with urination and severe dryness,” he noted. Carrier Strike Group 5 Hosts JMSDF Liaison Officers – Navy.mil https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/carrier-strike-group-5-hosts-jmsdf-liaison-officers-navy-mil/ 20 September 2022 From Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Askia Collins, Commander, Task Force 70 / Carrier Strike Group 5 PHILIPPINE SEA – Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 5 hosted seven liaison officers (LNO) from Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), aboard the U.S. Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), while JMSDF destroyer JS Amagiri (DD 154) operated in company with the strike group from Sept. 12-17. The embarked LNOs participated in watch standing and observing various ship’s evolutions during their time aboard Reagan, directly supporting the Sea Combat Commander (SCC) role as part of the strike group operations led by Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15. SCC is responsible for defending the aircraft carrier from surface and sub-surface opposed units, as well as planning and executing offensive strikes. The JMSDF officers coordinated a formation exercise, joint integration anti-submarine warfare exercise and tactics in an integrated environment. “It’s an honor to work with Commodore Horikawa Yuji and his staff from Escort Division 1” said Capt. Justin Harts, deputy commodore, DESRON 15 and embarked sea combat commander. “We are working hard to refine our interoperability with the JMSDF onboard the USS Ronald Reagan. While the JMSDF have been working continuously with DESRON 15/Commander Task Force (CTF) 71 as the theater surface warfare commander, COVID prevented regular embarkations of the forward deployed aircraft carrier and Sea Combat Commander training. Now that the rules allow for more regular training with our allies and partners, we are very excited to have our Japanese shipmates rejoin us as we share our commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific Region.” The U.S. Navy and JMSDF regularly host personnel from the other’s ships in order to strengthen ties between the two partner navies. While the LNOs gained insight into carrier operations, JMSDF Asagiri-class destroyer JS Amagiri operated as an integrated unit within the strike group, conducting anti-submarine warfare exercises, formation sailing, and tactics training. “I am very honored to train with CSG 5,” said Capt. Horikawa Yuji, commander, Escort Division (CCD) 1, JMSDF. “I believe this exercise was effective and it deepens our cooperation and interoperability. I hope this exercise will enhance force deployment and combined operational capabilities between JMSDF and USN in order for a free and open Indo-Pacific, that contributes to support stability in the Indo-Pacific region.” On Sept. 17, USS Ronald Reagan and Amagiri operations together concluded with a group sail in the Philippine Sea. This LNO exchange has been part of a long series of bi-lateral training conducted between the U.S. Navy and JMSDF throughout 2022. Earlier this year, CSG 5 and JMSDF made progress in expanding collective warfighting capabilities through routine exercises and exchanges. In April, CSG 5 and JMSDF Information Warfare (IW) teams conducted a conference aboard Ronald Reagan where they spoke face to face on topics relevant to information warfare. In May, units from CSG 5 and JMSDF conducted group sail exercises as well as a cross-deck helicopter exercise involving a JMSDF helicopter. Also in May, another group of JMSDF LNOs embarked aboard Ronald Reagan where they observed U.S. Navy firefighting and damage control practices during general quarters, flight operations, and watch standing and navigation practices. In August, the strike group hosted flag talks aboard the Reagan with their counterparts from JMSDF Fleet Escort Force to discuss maritime strategy and best practices for force operation and bi-lateral integration at sea. These efforts have led to recent operations with JMSDF destroyers JS Ohnami (DD 111) and JS Yamagiri (DD 152) in August, and now most recently with Amagiri and the visiting LNOs this month. The U.S. and Japanese maritime forces have been partnered in the Indo-Pacific for more than 60 years. U.S. 7th Fleet exercises operational control of its units through designated task forces or task groups. These groups are organized along domain and functional lines. CTF 70 is theater strike warfare commander and theater air and missile defense commander. CTF 70 is forward-deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific. U.S. 7th Fleet is the largest forward-deployed fleet in the world, and with the help of and network of alliances and partners from 35 other maritime nations, the U.S. Navy has operated in the Indo-Pacific region for more than 70 years; providing credible, ready forces to help preserve peace and prevent conflict.

Pickleball Is Exploding And Its Getting Messy The Washington Post
Pickleball Is Exploding And Its Getting Messy The Washington Post
Pickleball Is Exploding, And It’s Getting Messy – The Washington Post https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/pickleball-is-exploding-and-its-getting-messy-the-washington-post/ With multiple pro tours and new venues everywhere, pickleball’s growth shows no signs of slowing down. September 20, 2022 at 10:55 a.m. EDT Amateur pickleball players participate in mixed double matches during the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) Baird Wealth Management Open at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Ohio. (Arden S. Barnes/For The Washington Post) MASON, Ohio — The public address announcer’s voice boomed, balls flying amid the chaotic symphony of plastic pops and thwacks. So many greats had played and won here at the Lindner Family Tennis Center outside of Cincinnati: McEnroe and Agassi, Djokovic and Federer, Nadal and Serena. But center court was suddenly the stage for something very different. “We love tennis, and this is an incredible tennis facility,” the announcer bellowed, “but for today we are piiiiickleball!” All eyes were on Anna Leigh Waters, 15, and Ben Johns, 23, a mixed doubles team and perhaps the two brightest stars in the rapidly expanding pickleball universe, phenoms changing the way the game is both played and perceived. Competing in the Baird Wealth Management Open, one of the biggest events staged by the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA), Waters and Johns are torchbearers for a young sport with a future as promising as it is unpredictable. Quaint and complex, the game has been likened to chess on concrete and is most commonly compared with tennis, badminton and table tennis. It has also exploded into a big business with no shortage of deep-pocketed investors and eager opportunists. “We’re going to see way more growth in the next three years than what we’ve seen in the previous three years,” said Connor Pardoe, the founder and commissioner of the PPA. “It seems like every day there’s something new and exciting and someone else that wants to get involved. It’s really hard to even predict three years out.” Pickleball isn’t a sport at a crossroads as much as it’s a five-lane highway with everyone trying to merge while careening against the guardrails at top speeds. There are three professional leagues battling for players, customers, sponsors and superiority. Communities are racing to build courts to satisfy an ever-growing appetite, and investors are finding new ways to monetize the sport. Meanwhile, the tennis community is trying to save its courts and safeguard its future. There’s no blueprint for this kind of growth. Pickleball, with its quirky name and humble roots, was invented in 1965 and has long been popular in active retirement communities. But it went mainstream only in the past few years. Aided by a pandemic boom, there were 4.8 million players last year, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, though many in the industry suspect the real number is much higher, based on equipment sales and online activity. There are now 10,000 facilities nationwide registered with USA Pickleball, with three new venues opening every day on average. “A year ago it was like the wild west,” one industry insider said. “Now it’s like World War III.” Tyson McGuffin doesn’t look like a prototypical pickleball player, but maybe there’s no longer such a thing. The sport is now several years removed from any stereotypes or stigmas about being strictly a 55-and-older pastime, and it’s seeing growth across virtually all demographics. McGuffin is a tatted, mulleted, mustachioed ball of energy on the court. Then there’s J “Gizmo” Hall, who sports dreadlocks past his shoulders and competes wearing brightly colored, mismatched clothes that often feature cheeseburger patterns. And if Parris Todd looks like a fashionista on the court, it’s because she’s a fashion designer off it. The tour features former lawyers, accountants, college professors and many, many former tennis players. Its highest ranks also include teenagers Waters, Jorja Johnson (15) and her brother JW Johnson (19). Though the sport is buoyed by millions of casual players, there are a few dozen touring pros who earn a living off prize money, endorsement deals and pickleball clinics and coaching. Both professionally and recreationally, the game is showing no signs of slowing down. Its biggest events are staged in famous tennis venues such as the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Ohio, Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California and the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. “If you would’ve told me two years ago we would have been able to take those courts and turn them into pickleball courts, I would have thought you were crazy,” said Ken Herrmann, chief executive and founder of the Association of Pickleball Professionals (APP). There are high-level pickleball tournaments nearly every weekend, attracting both skilled professionals and weekend and after-work players. The event organizers aim for a festival-like atmosphere with a DJ blasting music, pros mixing with amateurs as they mill between courts, food trucks and vendor tents. Fans chase selfies and get their paddles autographed by the top-ranked players while waiting their turn to hit the courts in amateur tournaments. In Cincinnati, more than 850 players signed up for the four-day event, where 42 pickleball courts were spread across the tennis center — a pickle-palooza by any measure. The Tennis Channel covered each day. The buzz and energy is still new. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, there were 3.4 million players in 2019, a figure that shot up 39 percent post-pandemic. “You’ve got to remember that people couldn’t do anything, but they could go out in their driveway or in their cul-de-sac or the street or the park,” said Leigh Waters, one of the nation’s top doubles players who teams with her daughter Anna Leigh. “And they could do it with their family. It didn’t matter what age they were, what athletic ability they were.” With a smaller court and a shorter net than tennis, the game can be more intimate and doesn’t necessarily require as much mobility. The plastic ball has holes like a Wiffle ball, giving it pop off the paddle and making the speed and pace manageable. Children play alongside grandparents. Men team up with women. Among pros and amateurs alike, the doubles game is more popular and highly regarded than singles. “It’s all about equality,” says Anna Worcester, a strategic adviser for Major League Pickleball. “All ages can play, all genders, all geographies, indoors or outdoors. It’s fun, it’s social, it’s easy to pick up regardless of athletic ability. It’s affordable and inexpensive. Pickleball meets every consumer need.” According to SFIA’s most recent numbers, the single largest age demographic is still 65-plus (849,000 players last year), though younger players aren’t far behind (787,000 ages 25-34; 600,000 in 18-24; and 610,000 in 35-44). Players tend to be white, college-educated and earn at least $100,000 annually. The major hotbeds are California and Florida, but nearly the entire country has felt the demand. Private businesses have been sprouting everywhere, such as the Pickle Shack in Columbus, Ohio, which is open to players 24 hours a day; the Missouri Pickleball Club outside of St. Louis, which features 18 indoor courts spread across 51,000 square feet; and several places like Chicken N Pickle, a chain that aims to marry casual pickleball with casual dining. Parks and recreation departments have been similarly scrambling to accommodate pickleball’s popularity. According to the National Recreation and Park Association, nearly 80 percent of departments serving communities of at least 250,000 people have outdoor tennis courts; half now also feature pickleball courts. Change is harder on the public side, where local officials have to sort out limited resources, often re-purposing tennis courts or converting soccer fields. They must weigh the needs from their tennis players, too, who don’t want to lose courts or contend with pickleball lines. (A single regulation tennis court can accommodate four pickleball courts.) In Wichita, a pickleball pro is now on the city payroll to help oversee the sport and run clinics and tournaments, and local officials have allocated $3 million to build its “Pickleplex,” a 20-court public facility scheduled to open next year. “I knew it was coming, but it’s hard to move fast enough,” said Troy Houtman, Wichita’s director of parks and recreation. “People are just so hungry for it.” Herrmann saw the potential early. With a background in tennis as a player, coach and club operator, he launched the APP in 2019, growing it from three annual events in 2020 to 32 this year, featuring $2 million in total prize money. The PPA’s Pardoe was early in the space, too. After his family, which runs a real estate development company in Utah, began casually playing together, they dreamed up something similar to the AVP beach volleyball tour. The PPA launched in 2018 and this year is staging 20 events with $3 million in prize money. And a hedge-fund manager named Steven Kuhn founded Major League Pickleball in 2021, introducing a rating system and offering a team format that sets it apart from the two existing tours. Backed by investors that include Drew Brees, James Blake and Gary Vaynerchuk, the league is hosting three events this year, featuring many of the players from the tours. All three entities are vying to be the market leader. For now, they seem to coexist, but the PPA ruffled feathers when it signed exclusive contracts with some of the sport’s top players. The tour was purchased this year by Tom Dundon, the billionaire owner of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, who quadrupled the staff and moved the operation from Salt Lake City to Dallas. It has already seen improved coverage on the Tennis Channel and even a weekend slot on CBS for a recent tournament. “The most amount of money ...

DeSantis Next Move? Bidens Delaware Home Could Be Migrant Flight Stop Tampa Bay Times
DeSantis Next Move? Bidens Delaware Home Could Be Migrant Flight Stop Tampa Bay Times
DeSantis’ Next Move? Biden’s Delaware Home Could Be Migrant Flight Stop – Tampa Bay Times https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/desantis-next-move-bidens-delaware-home-could-be-migrant-flight-stop-tampa-bay-times/ Officials in Delaware were preparing for the possible arrival of a flight of migrants from Texas Tuesday afternoon. The plane’s flight plan bears the hallmarks of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ operation last week to fly 48 Venezuelan migrants from San Antonio to Martha’s Vineyard. But as of 11 a.m. flight records showed the plane was still on the ground at a regional airport near Longview, Texas, well past its scheduled departure time, and hadn’t made it to San Antonio yet. The reason for the delay wasn’t clear. The flight’s ultimate destination appeared to be a Delaware airport near President Joe Biden’s vacation home, according to data posted on the website FlightAware. It was chartered by the same company, Ultimate JetCharters, that arranged two flights to Martha’s Vineyard last week on behalf of the state of Florida. The aircraft can hold roughly 30 passengers. An official with the Delaware Coastal Airport said personnel from the state’s Department of Health and Social Services were ready to meet the migrants if the plane lands later today. “It’s all been coordinated,” said the official, who identified himself as a member of airport management but declined to give his name. The airport official said that he otherwise didn’t know anything about the status of the flight, adding that no one had called the airport to give any additional information about it. “As far as the arrival of the aircraft, I’m just looking at FlightAware,” said the official, referencing the flight-tracking website. Delaware Governor John Carney’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But Carney’s office confirmed to the Delaware News Journal that it was aware of the reports and was preparing “to make sure that migrants who arrive here have the support that they need.” The Delaware flight was scheduled to travel from a regional airport near Longview to Kelly Field in San Antonio Tuesday morning. Its flight plan then had it stopping in Crestview in the Florida Panhandle before touching down at Delaware Coastal Airport in the afternoon. The airport is about 40 minutes from Biden’s vacation home near Rehoboth Beach. There was little sign of activity at Kelly Field on Tuesday morning. The flight would have been the second instance of DeSantis using Florida taxpayer money to send migrants from Texas to the Northeast. Last Wednesday, the governor acknowledged chartering two flights that carried 48 Venezuelan migrants from San Antonio to Martha’s Vineyard, where former president Barack Obama owns a home. One of those two planes was also slated to be used for the Delaware trip. DeSantis has said the efforts are intended as a message about the record-breaking numbers of migrants crossing the southern border — which he and other Republicans blame on Biden. The governor appeared on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show Monday night to discuss the charter flights. He was accompanied by a graphic that said the flights were “just the beginning of efforts to relocate migrants.” Get insights into Florida politics Subscribe to our free Buzz newsletter Political editor Emily L. Explore all your options The governor is expected to give a news conference later Tuesday and may address reports about the flight. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Neither did the governor’s office. Some migrants said they had been lured onto the Martha’s Vineyard flights with promises of jobs and aid that turned out to be false. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday it was opening an investigation into whether any of the migrants were victims of a crime. Florida Democratic legislators have called on DeSantis to stop using state money for the relocations. Earlier this year, the state Legislature passed a bi-partisan budget that authorized a $12 million program for removing “unauthorized aliens from this state.” But none of the migrants have set foot in Florida, except when their planes landed to refuel in the Panhandle on their way north. At a Monday news conference, House Democratic Leader Evan Jenne of Dania Beach said the flights were “about politics, plain and simple,” according to the Tallahassee Democrat. State records show the Department of Transportation recently paid $1.565 million to a contractor with ties to the Panhandle for the relocation program. It’s not yet clear what role Oregon-based Vertol Systems Company Inc., which has operations in Destin, played in flying the migrants to Martha’s Vineyard. Vertol Systems has also received roughly $25 million in federal contracts since 2004, mostly from the Department of Defense, according to a review of a U.S. spending database. Most of the contracts were for flight training, the database shows. In addition to DeSantis’ flights, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has sent migrants to Northeastern cities using buses — including dropping some off at Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence in Washington, D.C. Abbott’s office told the Herald that Texas had sent more than 8,100 people to D.C., more than 2,600 to New York City and more than 675 to Chicago, as of Monday. This is a breaking news story and will be updated. Times/Herald Staff Writers Ana Ceballos, Lawrence Mower and McClatchy DC Staff Writer Ben Wieder, contributed to this report. %

The flu vaccination is the best way to prevent the flu and its potentially serious complications. Get the Flu Shot The vaccine is recommended for everyone six months and older, including pregnant women. Individuals who are at most risk for getting severely ill from the flu are young children, pregnant women, people with certain chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart disease or lung disease, and people aged 65 years and older. It takes approximately two weeks after vaccination for your body to develop protection against the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends getting a flu vaccine every year because flu viruses evolve quickly, and last year’s vaccine may not protect against the current year’s strains. Even if the vaccine does not fully protect against the flu, it may reduce the severity of symptoms and the risk of complications. The CDC reminds everyone that it is safe to receive your flu vaccine the same time as your COVID-19 vaccine, making it convenient to take care of both at the same time. Could A Pill To Strengthen Muscle And Bone Replace Exercise? – Medical News Today https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/could-a-pill-to-strengthen-muscle-and-bone-replace-exercise-medical-news-today/ Scientists are edging closer to finding solutions for muscle and bone loss. Jonathan Knowles/Getty Images Physical activity is known to promote bone and muscle health. Aging, lifestyle, and chronic disease can lead to physical inactivity, which is associated with bone and muscle loss. New research has now identified a drug that can mimic physical exercise in mice. The new drug, called locamidazole, can increase bone formation, mineral density, muscle thickness, and muscle strength in mice. When we are physically active our bones and muscles work together to make them stronger. To maintain bone health, the American College of Sports Medicine recommends a combination of weight-bearing activities 3–5 times per week and resistance exercise 2–3 times a week. Research has shown exercise to be beneficial for preserving bone health, and a physical exercise results in bone loss. The advocates regular physical activity to strengthen and maintain muscle and bone, has shown improving muscle strength can have a moderate effect in relieving joint pain for people with . Despite its benefits, modern-day living is associated with a lack of physical activity. According to the , physical inactivity is a serious but “insufficiently addressed public health problem” with up to 85% of the world’s population leading a sedentary lifestyle. Inactivity is also associated with an increased risk of chronic disease. The British Heart Foundation attributes more than 5 million deaths worldwide to physical inactivity, which equates to one in nine deaths overall. Chronic conditions, injury, and aging may mean it is more difficult to undertake physical activity, which can lead to muscle weakening ( and bone loss (osteoporosis). New research undertaken at Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) has identified a new drug that can mimic exercise, and promote similar changes in muscle and bone. The work, led by Professor Tomoki Nakashima, has been published in Bone Research. In the , the research team identified a new compound called Locamidazole (LAMZ) as a potential therapeutic drug that can cause similar effects to exercise. To test the new compound, the researchers administered either 10mg/kg of LAMZ orally once daily, 6mg/kg LAMZ by injection twice daily, or a control solution for 14 days to male mice. Administration of LAMZ orally and by injection showed changes in both muscle and bone. Researchers noted that the treated mice had wider muscle fibers and increased muscle strength when compared to the non-LAMZ-treated mice. Endurance was studied using a treadmill device, the LAMZ-treated mice were less fatigued and traveled a longer distance than the non-treated mice. In an interview with Medical News Today, Dr. Joseph Watso, assistant professor at Florida State University, who was not involved in the study, explained: “It is thought-provoking that while the changes in distance traveled by the animals were small (around 2%), the increases in adjusted maximal muscle strength and muscle fiber width were quite substantial after 14 days of LAMZ administration.“ Using gene analysis, the researchers showed that LAMZ increased the number of mitochondria—the powerhouse of the cell—in muscle and bone cells. They noted an increase in the expression of the gene for the PGC-1 alpha, a protein known to maintain muscle and bone cells and increase the production of mitochondria. “PCG1a is a known transcriptional coactivator that increases mitochondrial biogenesis. This is an interesting feature of the agent they identified as mitochondrial biogenesis is a hallmark physiological adaption of exercise training,” Dr. Watso explained to MNT. To understand the pathway further, the researchers orally administered LAMZ to mice whilst blocking PGC-1 alpha. They found no increase in muscle strength, indicating the effects of LAMZ on muscle and bone through PGC-1 alpha. 3D images of bone samples generated using Micro-CT showed an increase in bone thickness, density, and bone mineral content, confirming the cell study findings of increased formation and a reduction of bone loss. “We were pleased to find that LAMZ-treated mice exhibited larger muscle fiber width, greater maximal muscle strength, a higher rate of bone formation, and lower bone resorption activity,” the study’s lead author Takehito Ono commented. The study has shown that LAMZ can reinforce bone and muscle with no negative effects on surrounding tissues, and can function as a therapeutic drug by reinvigorating muscle and bone via PGC- 1α, mimicking physical exercise. Dr. Watso summarized the findings: “The article provides convincing evidence in animals for an agent with a high potential to improve bone and muscle health. Like most agents evaluated in animals, the key next question is whether those findings will translate to humans. Of course, without any harmful side effects that may not have been observed in the animal studies.” He cautioned that “it will be an arduous task to develop one elixir of health to replace the innumerable benefits of regular physical activity and exercise. That said, continued efforts are needed to reduce the incidence of, and burden associated with, preventable diseases.” In certain cases, medication may be the safer option than exercise, but where possible, “exercise should be the first consideration for those who have the capability to be physically active,” said Dr. Watso. Despite this, “it is certainly worthwhile to continue to examine population-specific risk factors and pathophysiology for potential treatment targets,” he added.

Spot, A Seattle Metaverse Startup For Hybrid Workforces, Raises $5.5M – GeekWire https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/spot-a-seattle-metaverse-startup-for-hybrid-workforces-raises-5-5m-geekwire/ An example of a virtual GeekWire office built with Spot. (Spot Photo) New funding: Spot, a Seattle-based startup building a Sims-esque metaverse platform for businesses, has raised a $5.5 million seed round. The tech: The company allows users to build virtual hubs that can be used for events or business functions. Users are able to communicate with each other through chat or video conferencing functions. The idea is to replace Slack channels and breakout rooms with an immersive digital headquarters. Use cases: Anyone with a web browser is able to access the service. Spot is currently being used by teams at companies ranging from Google to veterinarian offices. The startup said that users have already created more than 8,000 custom workplaces on the platform. It plans to use its fresh funds to continue developing the product into something that is “enterprise-ready,” CEO and co-founder Gordon Hempton told GeekWire in an email. The team: Spot, which currently has nine employees, was launched by Hempton and Wes Hather. The duo was part of a team that co-founded Seattle unicorn Outreach. They also worked together to launch a startup called Team Apart, a YC-backed workplace communication platform. Hempton said Spot will use some of its funding to hire four employees. The competition: As hybrid and remote work policies are increasingly adopted, many employers are incorporating various tech solutions in their plans to manage dispersed workforces. The most common examples include Slack, Microsoft Teams and Discord. However, other companies are trying virtual reality and apps such as Oculus for Business. In July, Microsoft introduced Viva Engage, an in-house social media app for employee engagement. Hempton said that Spot is building a “very ambitious product in a very competitive market.” He added that it is able to compete with companies like Slack and Teams because they don’t offer the same virtual office experience for users. Investors: The startup raised $1.7 million in April 2021. The round was led by Freestyle, with participation from Liquid 2 Ventures, Community Access Fund and Founder’s Co-op. The company did not reveal its valuation.

Best Crypto To Buy Trending Today: USTC, APE, HNT, CHZ, LUNC, ALGO, CVX, LUNA, QNT, LDO, IBAT – Cryptonews https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/best-crypto-to-buy-trending-today-ustc-ape-hnt-chz-lunc-algo-cvx-luna-qnt-ldo-ibat-cryptonews/ The cryptocurrency market has experienced modest gains over the past day after trading significantly below average to begin the week. Despite investors’ cautious optimism about coin prices, it appears that there are still opportunities to profit. In this article, we’ll examine the best crypto to buy trending today: 1. TerraUSD Classic (USTC) The first option among the top trending coins is USTC. Formerly the stablecoin of the Terra ecosystem, USTC has depegged against the dollar but is striving towards regaining its value.  USTC currently trades at $0.032, marking a 0.92% price increase in the past 24 hours. The asset is poised for a major 1.2% tax burn which should go live on September 21. Along with Terra Classic (LUNC), USTC is expected to see some upside once the tax burn takes effect.   2. ApeCoin (APE) APE, the native token for the ApeCoin non-fungible token (NFT) and metaverse ecosystem, is one of the most valuable assets in the market – despite only launching in March 2022. The coin currently trades at $5.87, a 12.53% uptrend in the past day.  APE investors will be anticipating an important coin unlock that should happen this week. The ApeCoin ADO is expected to unlock 25 million APE tokens, which have been allocated for “launch contributors.” These unnamed companies and contributors could flood the market with their tokens, although investors are optimistic that APE would withstand the selling pressure.  3. Helium (HNT) HNT is the native token for Helium Network – a blockchain that allows anyone to own and operate a wireless network of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The asset is currently trading at $4.47, marking a 4.3% price drop in the past 24 hours.  It would appear that HNT is among the top trending coins because of a bug on Binance that led to the mishandling of HNT tokens. Binance reportedly misallocated about 4.8 million HNT tokens, sending them to random users who quickly sold the coins for profits.  4. Chiliz (CHZ) The Chiliz platform is one of the most popular Web3 services available. Chiliz runs Socios, which allows sports and entertainment franchises to launch fan tokens that allow them to engage better with their fans.  Trading at $0.23, CHZ, the platform’s native token, surged by 0.28% in the past 24 hours. Investors are especially excited about Chiliz’s intention to transition from the Ethereum blockchain to its native chain, CHZ 2.0.  The move is expected to make Chiliz a self-sustaining platform, allowing it to compete with some of the biggest platforms in the NFT and Web3 spaces. 5. Luna Classic (LUNC)  LUNC is the former primary asset for the Terra ecosystem. After the USTC stablecoin was depegged, LUNC lost over 99% of its value in a downturn that affected the entire market. However, LUNC remains a hot-ticket item for many who still believe in the environment.    Trading at $0.00028, LUNC’s price slumped by 4.73% in the past 24 hours. However, like USTC, investors anticipate the 1.2% tax burn launch later this week. The tax burn already has support from exchanges like Binance, KuCoin, and MEXC, and it could be a major catalyst for a price surge.   6. Algorand (ALGO)  ALGO powers Algorand – a proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchain that describes itself as the home of FutureFi. The asset currently trades at $0.34, an uptrend of 8.3% in the past 24 hours.  Algorand appears on the list of the top trending coins because the blockchain protocol recently signed a partnership deal with FIFA – the global football governing body. As part of the deal, FIFA will launch FIFA+ Collect, an NFT platform, on the blockchain. With FIFA+ Collect, football fans can purchase soccer highlights, imagery, and art. Also, as the World Cup is less than two months away, this could be a bullish time for the asset. 7. Convex Finance (CVX) Convex Finance is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol that allows users to earn rewards, interest payments, and trading fees. While it isn’t one of the largest DeFi protocols, users are attracted to Convex because of the opportunity to earn extra income.  CVX trades at $4.70, a price jump of 1.48% in the past 24 hours.  8. Terra (LUNA) LUNA is the new asset for the Terra ecosystem. After the initial ecosystem crashed, investors moved on to LUNA, a fork of the old blockchain. LUNA currently trades at $2.70, a price drop of 4.87% in the past day.  The digital asset is trending as South Korean investigators continue their search for Do Kwon, Terra’s founder. Kwon has maintained that he isn’t on the run, although his whereabouts remain unknown.  9. Quant (QNT)  QNT is the native token for Quant – a blockchain interoperability network that ensures seamless collaboration and resource movement between multiple blockchains. It is popularly known as the first operating system to be built for blockchains to connect different blockchains and networks.  With a price of $103.93, QNT has been trading up by 1.74% in the past 24 hours. 10. Lido Finance (LDO)  LDO powers Lido Finance – a liquid staking protocol that allows users to stake cryptocurrencies and earn returns. The asset is controlled by the Lido DAO – a decentralized autonomous organization that operates Lido.  LDO, which currently trades at $1.77, has surged by 3.21% in the past 24 hours. LDO appears to be experiencing a bull run as more investors turn to Lido Finance to stake their coins. Days before the Ethereum Merge, Lido reportedly held 30% of all staked ETH. It is expected that this should increase, further bolstering LDO’s prospects. 11. Battle Infinity (IBAT) Rounding out the list of top trending coins is IBAT. The native token for the Battle Infinity fantasy sports ecosystem is shaping to be one of the most exciting new coins in the market. Battle Infinity’s seamless blend of the metaverse, NFTs, and fantasy sports has led to massive investor interest in the platform.  IBAT currently trades at $0.0029. The asset experienced a 5.54% increase in the past 24 hours, although investors are even more excited about the asset’s staking launch later this week. Staking should add more functionality to the coin, which recently completed its presale and is seeing growing investor demand.

U.S. Charges brazen Theft Of $250 Million From Pandemic Food Program The Washington Post
U.S. Charges brazen Theft Of $250 Million From Pandemic Food Program The Washington Post
U.S. Charges ‘brazen’ Theft Of $250 Million From Pandemic Food Program – The Washington Post https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/u-s-charges-brazen-theft-of-250-million-from-pandemic-food-program-the-washington-post/ The Department of Justice on Tuesday charged 47 defendants for allegedly defrauding a federal program that provided food for needy children during the pandemic, describing the scheme — totaling $250 million — as the largest uncovered to date targeting the government’s generous stimulus aid. Federal prosecutors said the defendants — a network of individuals and organizations tied to Feeding Our Future, a Minnesota-based nonprofit — allegedly put the wrongly obtained federal pandemic funds toward luxury cars, houses and other personal purchases in what amounted to a case of “brazen” theft. “These indictments, alleging the largest pandemic relief fraud scheme charged to date, underscore the Department of Justice’s sustained commitment to combating pandemic fraud and holding accountable those who perpetrate it,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement. The alleged scheme centered on the Federal Child Nutrition Program, which is administered by the Department of Agriculture to provide free meals to the children of lower-income families. Congress greatly expanded the program over the course of the pandemic, including by allowing a wider array of organizations to distribute food at a larger range of locations. The changes to federal law opened the door for Feeding Our Future to play a greater role in distributing meals, the Justice Department contends, and the group disbursed more than $200 million over the course of 2021. In doing so, though, federal prosecutors alleged the company’s founder and executive director, Aimee Bock, oversaw a vast fraud scheme across Minnesota. The company could not immediately be reached for comment on Tuesday. It was the largest burst of emergency spending in U.S. history: Two years, six laws and more than $5 trillion intended to break the deadly grip of the coronavirus pandemic. The money spared the U.S. economy from ruin and put vaccines into millions of arms, but it also invited unprecedented levels of fraud, abuse and opportunism. In a yearlong investigation, The Washington Post is following the covid money trail to figure out what happened to all that cash. Read more Bock recruited individuals and companies that “fraudulently claimed to be serving meals to thousands of children a day,” prosecutors contend. Some of the defendants created shell companies to enroll in the program and serve as sites for meal distribution, according to the government. In other cases, the Justice Department alleges that the defendants submitted the names of fake kids obtaining meals and false invoices for food purchases that never occurred. Feeding Our Future ultimately reaped $18 million in administrative fees that in the eyes of the government it was “not entitled” to receive. Company employees also appeared to solicit “bribes and kickbacks” from individuals and companies that it sponsored, the government says.

REUTERS/Tyrone Siu Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Sept 20 (Reuters) – Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O) on Tuesday announced new flagship chips for video gamers that use artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance graphics, saying it has tapped Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (2330.TW) to make the processors. Nvidia has gained attention in recent years with its booming data center business, which sells chips used in artificial intelligence work such as natural language processing. But the company’s roots are in graphics chips, which still provided 59% of its $26.9 billion in revenue in its most recent fiscal year. In a streamed online keynote address, Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang on Tuesday introduced the company’s newest “Ada Lovelace” series of graphics chips, named for the 19th-century British mathematician regarded as an early pioneer in computer science. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The flagship GeForce RTX 4090 model of the chip will sell for $1,599 and go on sale on Oct. 12. Two less costly RTX 4080 models will start at $899 and $1,199, respectively, and go on sale in November. Nvidia designs its chips but has them manufactured by partners. Huang said the chips will be made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufaturing (TSMC) with its “4N” chip manufacturing technology, a change from Nvidia’s previous generation of flagship gaming chips, which were made by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS). The new Lovelace chips use AI to improve video game graphics. Computing what each pixel on the screen should look like is hard, so Nvidia chips use AI to predict how some pixels should look without doing the entire set of computations. The Lovelace chips have extended that technique to generate entire frames of a game using AI. In a media briefing, Matt Wuebbling, vice president of global GeForce marketing at Nvidia, said the Lovelace chips will be available for sale globally and are not affected by a recently imposed U.S. ban on selling Nvidia’s top data center AI chips to China. read more Wuebbling also said the chips will not contain a so-called hash-rate limiter, a technology Nvidia put in its previous generation of chips to limit their use in mining the cryptocurrency Ethereum, because of recent changes in how that currency is tracked. The biggest clusters were near New York City and Chicago. The second-quarter patterns, based on gaps in home affordability, underwater mortgages, foreclosures and unemployment, revealed that New Jersey, Illinois and California had 33 of the 50 counties most vulnerable to potential declines, according to the report. The 50 most at-risk included nine in and around New York City, six in the Chicago metro area and 13 spread through northern, central and southern California. The rest were scattered across the U.S., including three in the Philadelphia metro area. At the other end of the risk spectrum, the South and Midwest had the highest concentration of markets considered least vulnerable to falling housing markets. “The Federal Reserve has promised to be as aggressive as it needs to be in order to get inflation under control, even if its actions lead to a recession,” ATTOM Executive Vice President of Market Intelligence Rick Sharga said in a release. “Given how little progress has been made reducing inflation so far, the Fed’s actions seem more and more likely to drive the economy into a recession, and some housing markets are going to be more vulnerable than others if that happens.” Thirty-one of the 50 counties considered most vulnerable in the second quarter to housing-market troubles were in the metro areas around Chicago, New York and Philadelphia, as well as in California. The top 50 counties included two in New York City (Kings and Richmond counties, which cover Brooklyn and Staten Island), seven in the New York City suburbs (Bergen, Essex, Ocean, Passaic, Sussex and Union counties in New Jersey and Rockland County in New York) and six in the Chicago metro area (Cook, Kane, Kendall, McHenry and Will counties in Illinois and Lake County, Ind.). The three in the Philadelphia metro area were Philadelphia County, along with Camden and Gloucester counties in New Jersey.  California had 13 counties in the top 50 list: Butte County (Chico), Humboldt County (Eureka), Shasta County (Redding) and Solano County (outside Sacramento) in the northern part of the state; Fresno County, Kings County (outside Fresno), Madera County (outside Fresno), Merced County (outside Modesto), San Joaquin County (Stockton) and Tulare County (outside Fresno) in central California, and Kern County (Bakersfield), Riverside County and San Bernardino County in the southern part of the state. Counties most at-risk continue to have higher levels of unaffordable housing, underwater mortgages, foreclosures and unemployment.  At least 7 percent of residential mortgages were underwater in the second quarter in 23 of the 50 most at-risk counties. Nationwide, 5.9 percent of mortgages fell into that category. Those with the highest underwater rates among the 50 most at-risk counties were Rockland County, N.Y. (outside New York City) (19.2 percent of mortgages were underwater); Lake County, Ind. (outside Chicago) (18.9 percent); Peoria County, Ill. (17.6 percent); Philadelphia County, Pa. (16.1 percent) and Saint Clair County, Ill. (outside St. Louis) (16.1 percent). More than one in 1,000 residential properties faced a foreclosure action in the second quarter of 2022 in 40 of the 50 most at-risk counties. Nationwide, one in 1,559 homes were in that position. The highest rates in the top 50 counties were in Cuyahoga County (Cleveland) (one in 365 residential properties facing possible foreclosure); Cumberland County, N.J. (outside Philadelphia) (one in 373); Warren County, N.J. (outside Allentown, Pa.) (one in 455); Camden County, N.J. (outside Philadelphia) (one in 462) and Saint Clair County, Ill/ (outside St. Louis) (one in 470). Half (25) of the 50 counties least vulnerable to housing-market problems from among the 575 included in the report were in the South, 14 were in the Midwest, five were in the West and six in the Northeast. Tennessee had six of the 50 least at-risk counties, including three in the Nashville metro area (Davidson, Rutherford and Williamson counties), while Wisconsin had five – Brown County (Green Bay), Dane County (Madison), Eau Claire County, La Crosse County and Winnebago County (Oshkosh). Another four were in Arkansas: Benton County (Rogers), Craighead County (Jonesboro), Sebastian County (Fort Smith) and Washington County (Fayetteville). Counties with a population of at least 500,000 that were among the 50 least at-risk included King County (Seattle, Travis County (Austin), Texas, Salt Lake County (Salt Lake City, Wake County (Raleigh), N.C., and Cobb County (Marietta), Ga. Least-vulnerable counties have more-affordable homes along with lower levels of underwater mortgages, foreclosure activity and unemployment. Less than 5 percent of residential mortgages were underwater in the second quarter in 30 of the 50 least-at-risk counties. Those with the lowest rates among those counties were Chittenden County (Burlington), Vt. (1.3 percent of mortgages were underwater), Williamson County, Texas (outside Austin) (1.4 percent), Williamson County, Tenn. (outside Nashville) (1.5 percent); Travis County (Austin), Texas (1.8 percent) and Wake County (Raleigh), N.C. (1.9 percent). When Is The Best Time Of Day To Eat Spices To Boost Your Health? The Epoch Times
When Is The Best Time Of Day To Eat Spices To Boost Your Health? – The Epoch Times https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/when-is-the-best-time-of-day-to-eat-spices-to-boost-your-health-the-epoch-times/ When you walk down the aisles of your local grocery store, there is usually an entire section dedicated to spices. From cinnamon to pepper, cumin to star anise, ground or whole, organic or locally sourced, the choices are bedazzling and the selection endless. Spices were once so valuable that entire nations sent out expeditions just to discover new routes to their source, yet they are so common today that we can pick one off the shelf. In addition to how spices enhance our food, they actually have incredible medicinal properties. According to an extensive 2019 study published in The Journal of AOAC International, “there is now ample evidence that spices and herbs possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumorigenic, anticarcinogenic, and glucose- and cholesterol-lowering activities, as well as properties that affect cognition and mood.” Cinnamon, for example, contains cinnamedelhyde, which lowers blood pressure. Tumeric, with its antioxidative properties, fights off inflammation, reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer, relieves arthritis pain, and alleviates symptoms from Alzheimer’s. Ginger helps with morning sickness and nausea and other side effects from chemotherapy. The list goes on. But many people are not used to eating spices as a nutritional supplement and may have heard stories about how they cause bloating, heartburn, or other unwanted side effects. Other people have issues with spices in general and are asking themselves if it is really worth all the trouble. We turned to nutritional specialists for answers. How and When to Take Spice Supplements “I would say the most common [issue people have with spices] is tolerance,” said Supriya Lal, a registered dietician. A good example of this would be chili. Some people may be OK with dumping a lot of hot sauce onto their food, while others may be struggling with just a drop or two. This then also applies to the myriad of spices out there where the individual needs to figure out how much of a spice he or she can tolerate. For minimized side-effects and maximum absorption, Lal recommends that we add the most spices to our food late morning to early afternoon. During the morning, our bodies are still waking up and might struggle to handle an intense breakfast; at night, dinner is usually right before bedtime, so digestion is going to be on the slow side of things. Around noon, however, the body is likely to be at its peak and will be able to process things most effectively. This includes spices. If you are taking spices in a supplement form, Katie Chapmon, an award-winning, registered dietitian, suggests taking “your supplements on an empty stomach, away from other food and medication by about two hours.” She says to check if the spices somehow interfere with other medication you are taking by consulting with your physician. Chapmon also said that there are really no side effects to spices, but that the body might take some time to adjust to them. This is why, especially when taking spices as a prescribed supplement, it is helpful to not start off with the maximum dosage all at once. If your prescription tells you to take three capsules a day, you can start off with one, then gradually increase it over time according to your own pace. Incorporating Spices Into Your Diet “Spices [in general are] a thing that can really increase dietary diversity,” which is why Lal recommends everyone to be a little daring and give spices a try. Dietary diversity is a great way to “increase the healthy amount of bacteria in our gut,” a keystone to healthy living and longevity. A great way to incorporate spices into your diet is to simply cook them into your food. Adding nutmeg to your latte, peppermint to your tea, ginger to your fish, or sage to your chicken is a great way to incorporate more flavor into your life—not to mention the promised health effects. It is important to remember to not overcook spices, as “[heat] can affect [the] nutritional value of spices. [For] most of the time, it’s best to … eat them raw,” says Chapmon. She also says that taking spices in the supplement form, meaning like a capsule or pill, can guarantee the fixed amount of the supplement you need. For example, if you need a daily dose of 30 milligrams of curcumin, one of the active biocompounds in turmeric associated with the anti-inflammatory and cancer preventing properties as previously mentioned, it is easiest to do so with a supplement. Lal, however, takes a different approach. “I am a huge proponent of eating things in their whole form rather than a supplement,” remarked Lal, as she thinks taking spices in the form of a pill or concentrate is still secondary to the real thing. This is why she recommends all her patients to stick with the real thing. Regardless of how you choose to take your spices, one way to minimize any negative repercussions from spices is to not only eat them at the right time, but also keep a little food diary on your phone or a notepad while you try them out. Take note of what you can’t tolerate if you’re feeling a little anxious. There’s really no way other than a little bit of good old-fashioned trial and error. Yogurt, on a side note, is a handy thing to have on hand as it can help neutralize heartburn if it comes up. In general, there are no real disadvantages or serious side effects to eating spices. Intolerance is really the only issue that can arise, which might spell trouble for people who have IBS or gastrointestinal disturbances. In this case, you should always consult with your physician if you have any questions. Some people have expressed concerns about spices contaminated with heavy metals, and Lal recommends checking the source of where you’re getting the spices. “Each country has their own rules and regulations when it comes to harvesting and manufacturing [spices]… check the sources yourself. Are you getting them from an organic farm? Are you getting them from the supermarket?” Another great way to ensure that your spices or supplements are safe is to check the labeling if they are third party certified. Labels like USDA organic or Fair Trade Certified are always a good sign. “Make sure that you have some labeling or some seals that are either third party tested or [you’re] looking for a seal that reaches qualifications,” Champon added. The Spices Nutritionists Like the Most Chapmon said that “one of my favorite spices is turmeric. I love the anti-inflammatory properties that it gives and …[turmeric] also [has] such a bright, lovely color as well. And then my other one is oregano. That’s really wonderful for gut health and gut dysbiosis.” Lal, on the other hand, mentioned a spice that we often overlook and underrate. She said that across all cultures and civilizations, salt has played one of the most vital roles in our diets. We humans cannot live without salt, and although we tend to consume a little too much of it, the importance thereof should never be underestimated.
