The Hopi Tribe was under strict safety protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic, with nightly curfews and stay-at-home orders. That left little to do for young people on the remote Reservation in northeastern Arizona. So…they started skateboarding. Anywhere they could. It was something to do outside, together, that was relatively safe. It became therapeutic. In the village of Tewa, two friends decided to create a skateboarding collective and build the Hopi Tribe’s first skate park. KNAU’s Sakya Calsoyas spent a recent sunny day at the half pipe.
Terrill Humeyestewa will never forget his first skateboard. “I got a Walmart board for $15, didn’t roll at all. Could easily snap off the tail,” he says. But it worked well enough to learn the basics of the sport on the dirt roads and sandy areas near his home in the Village of Tewa. “I learned all the different tricks…like ollies, kick flips, these weird tricks, handstands because they wouldn’t roll.”

At the time, Humeyestewa never imagined his $15 skateboard would lead him to build the Tribe’s very first skate park. But that’s exactly what he did during the height of the coronavirus pandemic with his friend and fellow skateboarder, Quintin Nahsonhoya. “During quarantine, a lot of people like really picked it up and they just started trying to learn new tricks and stuff and sharing their clips on social media,” Nahsonhoya says.
The pandemic had an isolating effect on Hopi, a place that’s already fairly isolated. Young people, in particular, really struggled to find something to do as COVID-19 shut down communities. Tribal authorities halted travel and restricted group gatherings, so things like basketball and other team sports weren’t allowed. Nahsonhoya says skateboarding became a way to cope, “just noticing the increase in skaters on the Hopi reservation and noticing that a lot of kids my age, they were all wanting to learn how to skate, but there wasn’t really any place to do it.”
They skated on any flat surface they could find, like the empty parking lot at the local elementary school. But it was evident they needed a space of their own. Nahsonhoya and Terrill Humeyestewa decided to form a collective called Skate 264, named after the highway that runs the span of the Hopi Reservation. They raised money and found volunteers in the village to help build a skate park.
“It was a pretty good thing when everyone came together to have this happen,” Humeyestewa says. “No one was giving us a hard time…no one was like, we shouldn’t get that built they’re going to be a lot of gangsters out here all the things that go with stereotyping, like skateboarding, like drugs and graffiti and all the other stuff.”
Like many Native American Tribes across the country, the Hopi contend with stereotypes and stigma surrounding alcohol and substance abuse. The skate park was a way to counter those ideas and foster healthy living. Quintin Nahsonhoya says elders, relatives and neighbors came together with tools and experience to help with the construction.

Quintin Nahsonhoya and his parents helped build the Tewa Skatepark.
“Yeah, this is this is definitely a big leap for not just us, but our Hopi community, our Hopi youth out here. That just shows them that if they want, if they want anything done out here, they can do it. They just have to put their mind to it and like, you know, find the right people and people will help them out if they like the cause…” Nahsonhoya and Humeyestewa hope other villages will be inspired to build skate parks, too. They believe the Tewa park will have a lasting impact on generations of Hopi youth by providing a healthy example of exercise and positive living.
KNAU Sakya Calsoyas
“This is something I’ll definitely remember for the rest of my life. I’ll probably be telling my kids like, Oh, hey, I built that skate park when I was younger,” Nahsonhoya says.

Soccer-French federation to review image rights agreement
The French Football Federation said it will review its agreement on players’ image rights following media reports that striker Kylian Mbappe had refused to take part in sponsor activities. ESPN reported Mbappe refused to participate in a team photo and sponsor activities scheduled for Tuesday because he does not want to endorse some brands, including fast food chains and betting companies, that are under contract with the national team.
NFL-Bills cornerback Jackson being evaluated for neck injury
Buffalo cornerback Dane Jackson is being evaluated for a neck injury but has full movement in his extremities, the Bills said, after he left the field in an ambulance following a hit in Monday’s game against Tennessee Titans. Jackson was making a tackle on a Titans player just before halftime when team mate Tremaine Edmunds dove in, inadvertently causing a helmet-to-helmet collision that pushed Jackson’s head back.
MLB roundup: Mets seal playoff bid behind Max Scherzer
Max Scherzer earned his 200th career win by tossing six perfect innings on Monday as the visiting New York Mets clinched a playoff spot by beating the Milwaukee Brewers 7-2. Pete Alonso hit a monstrous three-run homer in the fourth inning to spark the fifth straight win for the Mets, who remained a game ahead of the second-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East. The Brewers fell 2 1/2 games behind the idle Philadelphia Phillies in the race for the third and final NL wild-card spot.
Cricket-Black Caps tweak 2021 squad for T20 World Cup
New Zealand has named a largely settled 15-man party for the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia with Finn Allen and Michael Bracewell the only players who did not feature in the squad that made the final in 2021. Martin Guptill will play in his seventh T20 World Cup and Devon Conway will keep wickets in addition to his batting duties at the tournament, which starts for the Black Caps with a re-run of last year’s final against Australia in Sydney on Oct. 22.
Golf-No LIV players but rebel circuit set to dominate Presidents Cup
Saudi Arabia has never been part of the Presidents Cup, which every two years pits the best golfers from the United States against the best from the rest of the world — except Europe.
But this week at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit will be in the middle of the action, as the feud between it and the PGA Tour continues to escalate, impacting both teams.
Doping-WADA still monitoring Russia ahead of the expiration of ban – Banka
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) are still monitoring testing operations in Russia ahead of the decision on whether to reinstate the country, despite complications caused by the Ukraine war, president Witold Banka said on Tuesday. The existing two-year ban from international sport imposed by WADA on Russia for widespread, state-sponsored infringements of doping regulations expires at the end of the year.
Cricket-Australia’s Finch wants to carry on an ‘exciting’ T20 journey
Australia’s Aaron Finch finds Twenty20 cricket “exciting” and has no immediate plans to quit the format, the 35-year-old said ahead of their three-match series against India on Monday. Australia’s white-ball captain Finch quit one-day cricket after the home series against New Zealand earlier this month following a prolonged run drought in that format.
Motor racing-Alonso will challenge Aston Martin – Krack
Fernando Alonso has the “speed, hunger, motivation and experience” to help Aston Martin take the next step but things could get difficult if they do not deliver a fast enough car for the former world champion, team boss Mike Krack said. Alonso is set to make the move from Renault-owned Alpine to Aston Martin in 2023 as a replacement for four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, who is retiring at the end of the current season.
Soccer-Barcelona forecast 274 million euros profit this season
Barcelona said it recorded a profit of 98 million euros ($98.27 million) for the 2021-22 financial year and forecast a 274 million euros profit for this season. Barcelona ranks second on Forbes’ list of soccer team valuations with a current value of $5 billion, behind rivals Real Madrid, who are valued at $5.1 billion.
The cricket-New batter on strike even if players cross during catch – ICC
New batters will come in at the striker’s end after a catching dismissal even if those in the middle had crossed, the International Cricket Council said on Tuesday as it detailed several changes to playing conditions. Crossing allows an incoming player a little more time to get up to speed and could prove crucial in tight contests in limited-overs cricket.

How Asia’s Idols Became A Gateway To The Metaverse – Jing Daily https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/how-asias-idols-became-a-gateway-to-the-metaverse-jing-daily/
Asia’s idol economy has long been a market fueled by toxicity and hysteria, yet its explosive purchasing power remains unparalleled. With the metaverse rapidly settling into its title as a billion-dollar industry, the two have, unsurprisingly, become a match made in revenue-generating heaven. Now, the continent’s most prominent entertainment stars want in on the growing landscape.
Despite its turbulent reputation, celebrities across the landmass are beginning to recognize how Web3 could become a driving force behind the bolstering of their digital presence and leverage idol-to-fan dynamics. It’s a burgeoning affair, but one that delivers a lot of potential to expand to new heights — only recently did girl group Blackpink take the win for Best Metaverse Performance at the MTV Music awards after their “The Virtual” concert via PUBG Mobile, with BTS’ Minecraft production coming up a close second.
With numerous big names investing heavily in their own virtual futures, many are turning to marketing campaigns such as digital collectibles and cross-dimensional experiences to tap into the growing Web3 market, as well as elevating their online communities by inviting fans along with them in the process.
According to a report published by iResearch Consulting Group in 2020, the market value related to the fan economy in China was estimated to be more than $619.2 billion (4 trillion RMB) in 2019, and was projected to surpass $861.7 billion (6 trillion RMB) in 2023. Meanwhile, South Korea’s K-pop industry has seen fans spending more on concerts, merchandise, and products related to their musical icons.

But Operation Qinglang, a program launched by the Cyberspace Administration of China last year which saw the tightening of policies within the entertainment industry, dealt a huge blow to the idol market. The crackdown prevented fan pages that had proliferated millions of followers, as well as limiting the number of times a celebrity or their associated products could appear on web pages. While many netizens demonstrated support for the decision, it also meant that many VIPs across the nation could no longer capitalize on their online fan groups to the same degree.
Which is where Web3 comes in. Although still somewhat in its infancy, the newfound digital space could aid in leveraging China’s idol economy. The transition to virtual could also see a surge of Gen-Z audiences following these stars and onboarding onto the space, sending the mainland’s online market value on a promising upwards trajectory, despite ongoing legislations regarding the metaverse across the country.
Across Asia, Web3 also opens up a new world of prospects. The landscape acts as a melting pot of possibilities in which idols can take on celebrity ambassadorships, global-scale concerts, meet-and-greets, and more. Cyrus Lu, co-founder of NFT-native luxury brand Luxeto, believes that the metaverse is a way for personalities to cut through the noise of the oversaturated entertainment industry: “It’s novel and exciting and gets the attention of the fan bases among today’s overstimulating environment.”
Mandopop star Jay Chou was one of the early adopters in the idol industry. The Tawainese music icon shot into the spotlight after releasing digitally-rendered versions of his “Phanta Bears” that he sold as NFTs. The launch set a new precedent for the global crypto art market, after amassing over $10 million (69 million RMB) and breaking the record for the fastest-selling NFT in the world in terms of quantity and price.
Following this success, Chou recently demonstrated his ambitions to expand his metaversal presence by turning five of his songs’ demos into digital collectibles via platform Bohe. The collectibles can be used as keys that unlock access to an exclusive virtual space, where fans can navigate as avatars and listen to the demos. While the release gained a lot of traction on Chinese social media, fans seemed hesitant to invest, with the 10,000 keys failing to sell out.
Lu speculates that the mainland’s wavering response to collectibles could be due to its non-existent resale sector for such assets. “The feedback from the market [China] has been somewhat lukewarm, partially because there’s no established secondary market for trading like OpenSea.” Beijing’s stringent bans on such platforms make it difficult for these products to increase in value or be sold on, causing them to ultimately lose appeal from the get-go.

Meanwhile, South Korean girl group Lightsum has also tapped the space after collaborating with French designer Victor Weinsanto and Web3-first agency Brand New Vision on digital clothing collection M3TALOVE. The NFT series consists of eight exclusive wearables, each designed to represent the individuality of the group’s members. Whether the collectibles prove successful remains uncertain, but the project demonstrates how Asia’s idols are striving for more exposure in the metaverse through creative endeavors like this.
Richard Hobbs, CEO of Brand New Vision, believes that K-culture in the metaverse is not only expediting, but it’s here to stay. “There have always been youth-driven trends at the intersection of fashion, music, and sport,” he observes. “In the last 10 years these have been joined by social media and other Web2 digital experiences. Now we are ready for Web3, real-time virtual events, and completely new ways of dressing and displaying identity.”
Developments across the landscape are signaling this sentiment to be true. Over the past year, an increasing number of K-pop acts have used the metaverse to create a virtual hub where they can build stronger connections with their fans. Girl group Billlie turned to SK Telecom’s Web3 service Ifland to host a meet and greet event with their fans, as part of their “K-Pop Guest House Land” after the band announced that it would be expanding its presence in the virtual space.

“Korea, in particular in Asia, is very pro-metaverse, so we see a lot of interest in how that can manifest itself in multiple ways that lead to wider engagement of both existing fans and taking K-culture to a wider global audience,” Hobbs notes. Similarly, South Korean girl group NMIXX also created a fandom space earlier this month on Zepeto, where visitors can practice dance moves and take selfies with the members using their own avatars. In the first six days, around 1 million users visited the virtual space and created more than 600,000 pieces of content on the platform.
Moreover, earlier this year, Gusto Collective and One Cool Group brought Asia’s first blockbuster piece of crypto art to life as an extension of movie star Louis Koo’s “Warriors of Future” release. Ten thousand unique avatar NFTs were launched via OneCoolGroup’s dedicated website, which have now sold out.
“Through owning an NFT from the film project, fans are directly supporting the artists or IPs they believe in. They can directly interact with the actor Louis Koo and the production team and of course, with other members of the community,” Aaron Lau, founder and CEO of Gusto Collective, explains. “Through NFT blockchain ledger technologies, creators will continue to receive royalty fees from subsequent transactions. Web3 technology is a game-changer in generating greater value through content and experiences for all stakeholders.” Not only can tokens open up new pathways for audiences to immerse themselves in, but there’s also the rewards for the artists themselves — it’s a two-way advantage for everyone involved.

In short, there’s huge scope for VIPs to engage with their communities in meaningful ways online, and evidence suggests that the appetite from fans is already there. KLKTN, a curated NFT platform which aims to elevate fandom experiences through Web3, is witnessing this reshaping of fan culture in real time. The platform’s popularity boils down to the level of added value it offers to fanbases, which can’t be replicated in the offline space. While musicians and artists are able to share their behind-the-scenes content and creative processes, they’re also able to enrich engagement with their fans by allowing them to select, purchase, and own authentic virtual “Special Edition” collectibles and digitally tokenized “Moments.”
But the metaverse remains an exceedingly challenging space to get to grips with. The mass proliferation of the online terrain opens up new corners of the internet that have yet to be regulated. This increased possibility of scams and frauds poses risks to both audiences and celebs. Moreover, a rise in virtual idols across the space means personalities risk losing their cultural relevance to these new competitors who are, as a result of their widespread popularity, being swept up by labels across Asia for brand deals, ambassadorships, and promotional campaigns.
“The tight grip on the Chinese celebrity community these days has to some extent contributed to the rise of virtual idols, think Ayayi or Ling,” Lu says. “The virtual idol by nature does not come with the personal risks an IRL celebrity imposes. This might mitigate the risk brands might face when signing celebrities or brand ambassadors.” For companies, the ...

SYDNEY, Sept 20 (Reuters) – China sees the Pacific islands as an area of significant strategic interest and the United States should strengthen its commitment to north Pacific island states, now in talks to renew a defence compact, to maintain a vital military buffer, a report released Tuesday by a U.S. Congress-funded think tank said.
China had made progress in the Pacific on geostrategic goals it has been unable to achieve elsewhere, said the report for the United States Institute for Peace, whose co-authors include former senior military officials.
This was cause for concern but not alarm, the report added, saying the U.S. should bolster support for island states in the north Pacific where it had the strongest historical ties.

The report comes ahead of a meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and a dozen Pacific island leaders next week, as Washington seeks to compete for influence with Beijing. read more
The Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and Palau are sovereign nations known as Freely Associated States (FAS), after signing compacts in the late 1980s that give the U.S. defence responsibility and the right to military bases.
The compacts, which expire in 2023 and 2024, are being renegotiated, and the report warned that these states could look to China for funding if negotiations fail.
“The vast FAS territorial seas, which span much of the northern Pacific, are an important strategic buffer between U.S. defense assets in Guam and Hawaii and East Asian littoral waters,” said the report, whose authors include Philip Davidson, a former commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, and David Stilwell, a former U.S. assistant secretary of state.
If Beijing were to succeed in bringing one of these states into its sphere, “it would imperil U.S. military capabilities in a strategically vital geographic command area and open the door to a broader reordering of regional architecture with implications well beyond the Pacific region,” it said.
A U.S. missile defence test range in the Marshall Islands is critical to U.S. space and missile-defense capabilities, it added.
Across the Pacific region, China is seeking to enhance its access to ports and Exclusive Economic Zones, frustrate efforts by the United States to project military power, increase intelligence gathering and surveillance capabilities, reduce Taiwan’s diplomatic partners, and promote the Chinese model of political and economic development, the report said.
“China views the Pacific Islands as an area of significant strategic interest,” it said.
Washington needs to provide an alternative to Chinese economic assistance to “counter Beijing’s efforts to capitalize on regional perceptions of neglect and abandonment”.
More resources were needed to monitor China’s increasing activity in the FAS, where Chinese research vessels with “military utility” have been spotted without permission.
The Federated States of Micronesia recently agreed to develop new U.S. military facilities, and Palau requested the U.S. build airstrips, ports and bases, which “Washington should consider seriously to the extent that it aligns with defense needs,” the report said.

Daimler Trucks Shifts Battery Strategy To Avoid Competition With Cars Automotive News Europe
Daimler Trucks Shifts Battery Strategy To Avoid Competition With Cars – Automotive News Europe https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/daimler-trucks-shifts-battery-strategy-to-avoid-competition-with-cars-automotive-news-europe/
HANOVER, Germany — Daimler Trucks is migrating its battery chemistry to a formula that eliminates nickel and cobalt to improve durability and reduce competition with the passenger car business for scarce materials.
Daimler will gradually move its vehicles to lithium iron phosphate batteries it has developed in partnership with China’s CATL. Iron and phosphate cost far less and are easier to mine than other battery materials.
“They are both cheap and plentiful almost everywhere and will definitely help to reduce the pressure on the battery supply chain as adoption grows,” said Sam Abuelsamid, an analyst with Guidehouse Insights.
Daimler, the German parent of Freightliner and Western Star truck brands, announced the strategy as it debuted a longer-haul electric truck for the European market at IAA Transportation 2022 on Monday.
“My fear is if the entire passenger car market, not just Tesla or the high-end cars, moves to batteries, there will be a fight,” Martin Daum, Daimler Truck’s CEO, told Automotive News. “And a fight always means higher pricing.”
Eliminating nickel and cobalt, the rarest elements going into vehicle batteries, reduces the cost, he said. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells cost about 30 percent less than nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) cells, according to BloombergNEF.
“The much lower cost, superior durability and safety make LFP a very appealing prospect for many use cases, especially commercial vehicles,” Abuelsamid said.
Freightliner and other Daimler brands now use NMC chemistry that relies on lithium and manganese in addition to nickel and cobalt.
Energy density a focal point
Much of the passenger car industry will stick to NMC chemistry that uses nickel and cobalt because those batteries have greater energy density. That allows for greater range in a small vehicle, Daum said.
Still, there is some movement even among passenger car makers to LFP batteries, Abuelsamid said, especially entry-level models. Tesla, for example, is starting to use LFP technology for some vehicles it manufactures in China.
“We expect that LFP will probably account for at least one-third of the EV battery market in the second half of the decade as most manufacturers adopt for at least some applications,” Abuelsamid said.
Besides Tesla, Volvo and Ford plan to incorporate LFP batteries into some of their vehicles.
Daum said the technology makes good sense for large commercial vehicles like electric Freightliners. The trucks have enough space for larger batteries that compensate for the lower energy density of LFP chemistry.
Technology advances may further narrow the gap. An expected shift in cell-to-pack architectures will eliminate the modular structure in batteries and help overcome the reduced energy density of LFP chemistry, Abuelsamid said.
That’s because the new design doubles the amount of active energy-storing material in a battery pack to 70 percent to 80 percent, he explained. According to Daum, LFP also offers better longevity because it doesn’t suffer the same level of degradation after thousands of cycles. Many in the industry consider LFP batteries safer because they operate at a lower temperature and are less likely to catch fire.
Strategies defined by segment
Batteries are starting to divide along multiple technology pathways by vehicle segment, said Nathan Niese, an electrification expert and partner with Boston Consulting Group.
Premium vehicles will offer the latest-generation high-nickel batteries that push boundaries on battery innovation, he said. Mid-level vehicles will use high-nickel or LFP chemistries that focus on fast recharging, while entry-level vehicles will come equipped with LFP or sodium-ion chemistries that value cost competitiveness over vehicle range.
The massive scale of the passenger vehicle market and its advantage as the first mover create sourcing challenges for later entrants such as commercial vehicle manufacturers, Niese said.
Daimler’s change in battery strategy comes as it unveils the Mercedes-Benz Trucks eActros Long Haul Class 8 truck.
The truck will have the new LFP batteries when it goes into production in 2024. Daimler, which owns Mercedes-Benz Trucks, said it would have a range of about 483 km (300 miles).
Although Daimler plans to sell the eActros in Europe, its batteries and other technology will appear in a future eCascadia model, Daum said.
“We are looking for maximum commonality on all platforms,” he said.

Whether you are a restaurant owner unable to provide table service, a bank manager trying to keep the front doors open all day, or a retiree standing in long lines at the pharmacy, the ongoing worker shortage is impacting our economy and daily lives. In simple terms, people are out and buying again. But without an adequate workforce, service levels decline and our small businesses can’t meet the demand or maximize their potential as they struggle to recover from the COVID years.
So where did all the workers go? Here are some statistics.
In a recent newsletter, I reported that across Oregon and even here at the beach, we have recovered most of the jobs lost during the pandemic. Oregon has regained 94% of jobs lost since 2020. But those jobs have changed and increasingly, people are working from home. One in five Oregon workers switched to remote or hybrid work during the pandemic.
There are vacancies throughout the economy. And with more openings for better jobs, workers move up leaving employers, particularly struggling to find lower-paying service workers. And with wages increasing for what we traditionally call “entry-level” jobs, a concerning trend is more students leaving school to take those jobs.
A recent story in the New York Times sheds new light on America’s “missing workers”.
People of retirement age, who had been staying in the workforce longer, dropped out at disproportionate rates and haven’t returned. Some are concerned that the pandemic made workplaces riskier for older people. At the same time, the value of homes and 401(k) accounts ballooned in 2021, bringing retirement within reach for many.
A paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that people who’d taken a week off for health-related reasons in 2020 and 2021 were 7 percent less likely to be in the labor force a year later — which equates to about 500,000 workers nationally.
That same study suggests that accelerated retirements may have made it possible for younger workers to move out of customer-facing jobs in industries like food service and retailing. That created a bigger gap in those sectors — visible in their higher rate of job openings and higher starting wages.
The next major category of workers who haven’t come back is men aged 25 to 54.
In households where both partners lack college diplomas, women still tend to be the ones who drop out to supplement unreliable child care. In households where at least one partner has a degree, women have started to step forward as sole breadwinners.
The longer-term decline in male labor force participation may be because so much manufacturing has been automated or moved to other countries. And one barrier disproportionately affecting men is the persistent impact of a criminal record. By age 35, 46 percent of unemployed men have a criminal conviction.
A sharp slowdown in legal immigration has reduced the potential workforce by 3.2 million since 2017.
And finally, some of the gap is due to Covid’s death toll – more than a million people – about 260,000 of them short of retirement age.

Australian Miner Fortescue Reveals $6.2 Billion Carbon Plan | Business News | Wfmz.com – 69News WFMZ-TV https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/australian-miner-fortescue-reveals-6-2-billion-carbon-plan-business-news-wfmz-com-69news-wfmz-tv/
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australian iron ore miner Fortescue Metals Group announced on Tuesday a $6.2 billion plan to eliminate fossil fuels and carbon emissions from its operations by the end of the decade.
The world’s fourth-largest iron ore producer expects to save $818 million a year from 2030 based on current prices of diesel, gas and carbon credits, said a Fortescue statement to the Australian Securities Exchange.
Most of the spending is planned for 2024-28. It includes an additional 2-to-3 gigawatts of renewable energy generation and battery storage as well as a green mining fleet of trucks and trains.
The target by 2030 of “real zero terrestrial emissions” — no fossil fuels and with only temporary, if any, offsets — would prevent 3 million metric tons (3.3 million U.S. tons) of carbon dioxide-equivalent greenhouse gas emissions a year.
Fortescue is a member of the First Movers Coalition, a platform launched by the U.S. State Department and the World Economic Forum last year for companies to harness their buying power and supply chains to nurture early markets for innovative clean energy technologies.
Other big companies are also stepping up moves to cut their carbon emissions.
Last week, Samsung Electronics announced it was shifting away from fossil fuels and aiming to entirely power its global operations with clean electricity by 2050.
Fortescue chairman Andrew Forrest said Fortescue, based in Perth, Western Australia state, was already benefiting financially from a decarbonization policy that began two years ago.
The new decarbonization strategy has “set an example that a post-fossil fuel era is good commercial common sense,” Forrest said in a statement.
“There’s no doubt that the energy landscape has changed dramatically over the past two years and this change has accelerated since Russia invaded Ukraine,” Forrest said.
“Consistent with Fortescue’s disciplined approach to capital allocation, this investment in renewable energy and decarbonization is expected to generate attractive economic returns for our shareholders through energy cost savings and a sharp reduction in carbon offset purchases, together with a lower risk-cost profile and improvement in the integrity of our assets,” Forrest added.
Australia’s new center-left Labor Party government has enacted a law setting a target to reduce the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions by 42% below 2005 levels by the end of the decade.
Under the previous conservative government, Australia had been branded a laggard on climate action over its target to reduce emissions by only 26%-28% by 2030.

Quality Sleep And Healthy Living With Vitafoam: The Risks Of Taking Sleeping Pills And How To Avoid It II Tribune Online
Quality Sleep And Healthy Living With Vitafoam: The Risks Of Taking Sleeping Pills And How To Avoid It – II – Tribune Online https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/quality-sleep-and-healthy-living-with-vitafoam-the-risks-of-taking-sleeping-pills-and-how-to-avoid-it-ii-tribune-online/
In our last article, we shared some facts about the sleeping pills swap. These are medications people helplessly turn to when they have sleep problems to fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer or both. While the pills offer some self-perceived better sleep by changing the brain chemicals to slow down and suppress the area of the brain that keeps one awake and alert, they also donate various serious and poisonous effects.
I mentioned some harmful effects like sudden deaths and daytime hang-over effects which blur thinking and impair one’s ability to do things that require attentiveness like driving, operating machines, and other daily tasks. There are also abnormal sleep-related behaviours for example sleep-walking, sleep-talking, sleep-driving and sleep-eating. These include usual human activities that are ordinarily done while fully awake with alertness and full control, but at this time with partial wakefulness, the activities are dangerously done with blurred alertness and dreamlike control leading to various mishaps such as falls from walking, crashes from driving, food-choking from eating and talking jargons.
Other unwanted effects affect different body parts and functions. For the head, the user suffers headaches, light-headedness, dizziness, fainting, forgetfulness, blurred vision, confusion and hallucinations. The muscles suffer generalized weakness. Also, the mouth-to-tummy tract is affected by dry mouth, unpleasant mouth taste, feeling like vomiting, indigestion, diarrhoea, and sometimes constipation. More worrisome are drug use disorders. It is either that one may, over a period of time, build up a tolerance to sleep pills, and will have to take more and more for them to work, which in turn leads to more side effects. Or one may come to rely on sleeping pills to sleep and will be unable to sleep without them, eventually developing an addiction to them, making it difficult to stop taking them. Annoyingly, a lot of times if the pills are stopped after prolonged use, the sleep problem can return even worse.
The ills of these pills have not ended. The pills can interact with other medications like painkillers, antibiotics and other sleep pills, causing worsened effects and outright damages. All these can even be where the pills are masking an underlying medical or mental condition causing the sleep problem, and leaving it untreated. Despite the unpleasant issues about the pills, sparingly, these drugs are considered for short-term use if the sleep problem affects one’s quality of life and other measures to resolve it have not helped. This can occur during jet lag from travelling across time zones and stressful life events like the loss of loved ones, relationships and jobs.
However, the pills should be taken strictly as personalized prescriptions by a well-trained doctor, following some safety guidelines. Firstly, the doctor should do thorough clinical and laboratory assessments to identify the cause of the sleeping problem. The doctor and pharmacist should provide clear instructions on when, how many and how long the drugs would be taken, descriptions of the possible adverse effects along with drug interactions, and directives on careful quitting of the pills when due. The user should avoid driving, machine operations and other activities that require watchfulness. Lastly, for the best period of effect, the pills should be taken just before bedtime and when one can get full sleep of 7 – 8 hours.
Overall, the medications should be used in combination with these good sleep practices which should be deliberately embraced as a habit, as we strongly avoid the pills.
Firstly, practices to ensure the brain’s good health:
– Consistently drink water at least 4.5L – 5.0L over the day, with urine turning colourless.
– Regularly eat just enough quantity of balanced diet two or three times daily.
– Regularly do SAFE exercises like fast walking, swimming, push-up sets, etc. – 30mins daily or at least five times a week.
– Avoiding smoking, excess alcohol and stimulants like caffeine.
– Keeping stresses in check with avoidance of avoidable stressors
– Maintaining the same sleep schedule, particularly the period to go to bed.
Secondly, ensure sleeping-inducing surroundings by:
– Relaxing with soothing soft music, a good book or meditation.
– Sleeping in a calming and relaxing environment
– Sleeping on a quality mattress and pillow that are conducive sleeping surfaces for supportive posture

St. Marys Golf Wins Second Straight LKC Title Marietta Times
St. Marys Golf Wins Second Straight LKC Title – Marietta Times https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/st-marys-golf-wins-second-straight-lkc-title-marietta-times/
Photo By Kerry Patrick A total of 10 golfers were recognized on the All-Little Kanawha Conference team during Monday’s LKC Golf Meet at Mingo Bottom Golf Club in Elizabeth. Pictured in the front row, from left: Cole Arnold (St. Marys), Trent Renner (St. Marys), Brayden Hall (St. Marys) and Preston Lawhon (St. Marys). Back row: Grant Roush (Wahama), Connor Ingels (Wahama), Kelan Lucas (Ravenswood), Blake Lewis (Parkersburg Catholic), two-time LKC Player of the Year Emerson Simons (Roane County) and Sydney Baird (Webster County).
ELIZABETH — Four hours since hitting her first shots off the practice range, Emerson Simons was ready to go home.
Good thing for her, she stayed. But bad news for the rest of the field at the Little Kanawha Conference Golf Meet, which experienced a two-hour rain delay before golfers started their round Monday at Mingo Bottom Golf Club.
Simons posted a 4-under par 68 and successfully defended her title as LKC Player of the Year. The gap between Simons and second place was significant as Wahama freshman Grant Roush and St. Marys junior Cole Darnold tied for runner-up honors at 76.
“Winning Player of the Year for the second straight year is amazing,” Simons said. “I really felt like I fought this year. It hasn’t been my best season, but it definitely hasn’t been my worst.”
“During today’s rain delay, I thought let’s call it off and go home, and reschedule it. But now I’m happy they didn’t.”
In the chase for the team title, four St. Marys golfers landed a spot on the 10-member All-LKC squad and the three-time defending state champion Blue Devils tucked away their second straight LKC championship with a 316. Wahama (337) and Roane County (337) followed in second and third place, respectively.
“The LKC is very competitive so we are really happy to have this win,” St. Marys coach Catie Hamilton said.
For a majority of the season, Arnold played No. 4 on the Blue Devil lineup. But the makeup of the Blue Devils program is interchangeable. Case in point, Trent Renner (80) just recently moved into the No. 1 slot — a position formerly owned by teammate Preston Lawhon (79). Brayden Hall’s 81 rounded out the team scoring.
St. Marys returns to Mingo Bottom GC for next Monday’s Class A regional.
“That’s the great thing about having a team so deep — everybody has the potential to shoot a great round,” Hamilton continued. “Today was a great trial run for how next Monday will go for us. We learned a lot today playing in some tough conditions with the rain. We also learned what we can do differently to come back even stronger.”
Darnold, who transferred from Ritchie County after his sophomore year, joined a crew he was familiar with and made for a smoother transition to a new school. At the LKC Meet, he experienced an inauspicious start with consecutive double bogeys on the first two holes then righted the ship by keeping the ball in play.
“I hit a lot of good iron shots and had a lot of good chances — if I missed a putt it wasn’t by much,” Darnold said. “I had a few bad shots off the tee but missed in the right spots and never really got into a lot of trouble.
“For next week, I need to work on getting off the tee. I lipped out on a couple of putts, but other than that everything is in a pretty good place.”
Roush, who was joined by teammate Connor Ingels (82) on the All-LKC team, embraced his first LKC Meet with the typical approach he would any other 18-hole event. No pressure, just another round of 18 holes of golf.
“I just wanted to win — that’s all I wanted,” Roush said. “I made a lot of short putts that really helped my round today. Made a lot of them.
“I didn’t hit my irons that well but my short game helped me a lot.”
Rounding out the All-LKC contingent were Parkersburg Catholic’s Blake Lewis (78), Ravenwood’s Kelan Lucas (79), and Webster County’s Sydney Baird (80).
As for Simons’ pursuit for a second straight title, she played her first-ever, bogey-free round of nine holes after posting two birdies as part of a 2-under 34 front nine. She made a putt from nearly 30 feet for her birdie on No. 6
“My putter was on fire today,” Simons said. “Recently, my short game has been awful, Today, I just hit the ball. Told myself, ‘you know how to hit the ball.’”
Simons had a colorful back nine, starting with a bogey on No. 10 followed by back-to-back birdies on 11 and 12. After a second bogey on 13, she answered with yet another birdie on 14.
“It was crazy watching Emerson shoot under par,” said Roush, who joined Simons in the lead foursome. “So many birdies. It was awesome to watch. It was really fun playing in her group.”

Disgraced Crypto Founder Says Hes Not On The Run. But No One Knows Where He Is. The Washington Post
Disgraced Crypto Founder Says He’s Not On The Run. But No One Knows Where He Is. – The Washington Post https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/disgraced-crypto-founder-says-hes-not-on-the-run-but-no-one-knows-where-he-is-the-washington-post/
The person most closely associated with last spring’s crypto crash appears to be on the run after an arrest warrant was issued for him — and investigators have asked for Interpol’s help to track him down.
Do Kwon, the South Korean developer of the TerraUSD and Luna cryptocurrencies, is believed to have been in Singapore since at least the spring, when those coins lost nearly all of their value. But Singapore authorities said this weekend he is no longer there, and South Korean investigators have reportedly asked Interpol to issue a “red notice” that would allow officers in member countries to provisionally arrest Kwon pending extradition if they find him.
Last Wednesday the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors Office issued an arrest warrant for Kwon and five other people who worked on both the currencies and Terraform Labs, the company that Kwon co-founded. Prosecutors did not list the charges, but investors have said he defrauded them in promoting the coins. TerraUSD — which used a computer program that claimed to peg its value to the U.S. dollar — and a related token known as Luna both took off in the past year, with each multiplying in value dozens of times over before crashing in May.
A Terra spokesman did not reply to a request for comment. Kwon also did not reply to a request for comment. He said on Twitter Sunday that “We are in the process of defending ourselves in multiple jurisdictions – we have held ourselves to an extremely high bar of integrity, and look forward to clarifying the truth over the next few months.”
The red-notice request was originally reported by the Financial Times.
The Kwon case is being watched closely as a sign of how aggressively law enforcement will pursue those engaged in allegedly illegal activities in the crypto space. Last month the Treasury Department issued sanctions on Tornado Cash, which helps anonymize crypto transactions, in a strong example of a crackdown on tech-based financial tools.
But the pursuit of individuals in crypto is much rarer, and Kwon’s case could be a bellwether for how other projects that lost large sums of value could be targeted in the courts — and if, eventually, some investors might claw their money back.
The 31-year-old Kwon graduated from Stanford University and briefly worked at Apple before returning to his home country several years ago to found a number of crypto projects, including Luna. Before the spring crash, Kwon was hailed as a visionary and even attracted a cult of everyday fans known as “Lunatics.”
Nor was it just retail traders — Terraform also raised money from respective financiers such as Silicon Valley VC firm Lightspeed Venture Partners.
But in May a quick sell-off began for still-unclear reasons, prompting the loss of more than $40 billion in value, according to analysis firm Elliptic, as the price of Luna plunged to nearly zero and TerraUSD went from $1 to $0.11. The collapse helped trigger a broader crypto crash that affected dozens of other assets and companies.
Bitcoin has gone from nearly $40,000 to under $20,000 since the Terra collapse, and the total market value of crypto has plummeted by more than a trillion dollars in just a few months.
Kwon made an attempt to relaunch Luna shortly after, to the outrage of many investors.
Law-enforcement experts said that they believed prosecution of the entrepreneur was possible but challenging given the vagaries of crypto, with the line in the industry between fraud and risky investment often blurry.
“If someone walks into a bank and holds it up for a lot of money with a videotape of the whole thing, well that’s a pretty clear-cut case,” said William Callahan III, a former Drug Enforcement Administration special agent who now serves as director of government and strategic affairs for a crypto company called the Blockchain Intelligence Group. “Investigating and prosecuting something like this requires a much more unique set of skills.”
He said the case against Kwon would likely turn on whether it can be proved he knowingly misled investors in stumping for the coins or was mounting a good-faith campaign for a risky-but-legal-venture.
Some evidence gathered by South Korean investigators so far, according to local media, includes allegations that Kwon and other Terraform executives decided to close their South Korea offices just a week before the currencies crashed. Kwon has said the shuttering was long in the works.
On Sunday the pursuit of Kwon took a surreal social-media turn when Kwon, outspoken on Twitter, took to the platform to deny he is a fugitive.
“I am not ‘on the run’ or anything similar – for any government agency that has shown interest to communicate, we are in full cooperation and we don’t have anything to hide,” he posted.
But the Seoul prosecutors quickly denied it. He is “obviously on the run,” the office said in a statement, according to local news media agency Yonhap.
Kwon quipped that he would only give away his coordinates if “1) we are friends, 2) we have plans to meet 3) we are involved in a gps based web3 game.”
U.S. Presses Tunisia Once A Bright Spot Of Arab Spring On Democracy The Washington Post
U.S. Presses Tunisia, Once A Bright Spot Of Arab Spring, On Democracy – The Washington Post https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/u-s-presses-tunisia-once-a-bright-spot-of-arab-spring-on-democracy-the-washington-post/
The Biden administration is pressing Tunisia’s leaders to reverse steps weakening the country’s democracy, exposing friction with a nation once seen as the most promising of those who experienced Arab Spring revolutions.
U.S. officials describe efforts to urge Tunisia to embrace a different political course as President Kais Saied continues to consolidate power more than a decade after Tunisians’ uprising against their then-strongman leader helped touch off revolutions in countries from Syria to Egypt.
A senior State Department official said U.S. officials have expressed their concern about events including a recent constitutional referendum that significantly strengthened the powers of Saied, who took wide-ranging steps to weaken institutional checks and sideline political opponents in 2021 in what critics called a “self-coup.”
The U.S. moves include talks between Saied and Barbara Leaf, the State Department’s top official for the Middle East. During a visit to Tunis last month, Leaf conveyed worries about a new constitutional framework “that weakens Tunisia’s democracy and how crucial going forward an inclusive and transparent reform process is to restore confidence of the Tunisian people,” the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive diplomatic discussions.
The public critiques have roiled the U.S.-Tunisian relationship. In July, Saied’s government reacted angrily to a statement by Secretary of State Antony Blinken raising questions about a constitutional referendum vote marked by low voter turnout.
“Tunisia has experienced an alarming erosion of democratic norms over the past year and reversed many of the Tunisian people’s hard-won gains since 2011,” Blinken said.
Saied’s government rejected what it called unacceptable “interference in the national internal affairs” following Blinken’s statement and summoned the top official at the U.S. Embassy in Tunis.
Saied’s office said the Tunisian leader pushed back on allegations laid out by Leaf in their meeting and “called on the American authorities to listen to their Tunisian counterparts to find out the reality of the situation,” Middle East Monitor reported.
U.S. officials have sought to forcefully nudge Tunisia while avoiding a total rupture with a nation whose cooperation on counterterrorism is seen as a crucial element of U.S. strategy for North Africa. Tunisia, with a population of nearly 12 million, for its part values U.S. military support and needs America’s backing as it seeks a deal with the International Monetary Fund.
“This partnership is going to be strongest when we have a shared commitment to democratic principles,” the senior official said.
While most Arab Spring revolutions ended in conflict or strengthened autocracy, Tunisia made significant strides to build its democratic process after the 2011 ouster of longtime leader Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali.
But public discontent has festered over joblessness and other pocketbook issues. Responding to those frustrations, the steps by Saied, a former constitutional lawyer, have resonated with some Tunisians fed up with the country’s post-revolution path. Others have grown increasingly alarmed.
Sarah Yerke, a former State Department official who is now a scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said the series of U.S. visits to Tunisia and public statements about its political process had been “effective in that they let Saied know someone is watching.”
“This kind of consistent drumbeat … is preventing him from taking Tunisia down an even further path,” she said, referring to the potential for Saied to take additional steps concentrating power in the Tunisian presidency.
The Biden administration has adopted a more critical stance than its European allies, many of whom are focused on deterring migration via North Africa. Citing Democratic reversals, the Biden administration has proposed a large cut to U.S. military and economic aid to Tunisia.
The senior official said the United States was ready to help Tunisians forge an accountable democracy including free debate, freedoms, and in “establishing checks and balances that are critical to the health of all democracies.”
He declined to characterize Saied’s response to Leaf’s message but said: “Friends need to be able to speak directly to each other.”
U.S. officials believe their pressure may be having the effect of heading off even more problematic steps, like a more dramatic crackdown on the media and civil society groups.
On Friday, Tunisia published a new electoral law that reduced the size of the country’s parliament and lessens the role of political parties. But it did not, as some U.S. officials had feared it might, take more worrisome steps like prohibiting candidates affiliated with parties from participating in upcoming legislative elections. Some opposition groups plan to boycott the vote.
The senior official said the Biden administration welcomed the law as a step toward enabling broad participation in the elections.
“An inclusive and transparent reform process is so crucial going forward,” the official said.

Musk says Starlink will seek exemption from Iranian sanctions
SpaceX is aiming to rapidly expand Starlink
20 September,2022 09:15 am
(Reuters) – SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said that the company will ask for an exemption from sanctions against Iran to provide the firm’s Starlink satellite broadband service in the country.
Musk made the statement on Twitter at a time of widespread protests in Iran over the death of a woman in police custody. Some people on Twitter asked Musk to provide the satellite-based internet stations.
Access to social media and some content is tightly restricted in Iran and internet monitoring group NetBlocks reported “near-total” disruption to internet connectivity in the capital of the Kurdish region on Monday, linking it to the protests.
Iran’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology could not be immediately reached for comment. The foreign ministry, Iran’s mission to the United Nations and the United States Bureau of Industry and Security did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.
Musk did not specify from which country Starlink would seek exemptions, but Iran faces broad based sanctions.
SpaceX is aiming to rapidly expand Starlink, and it is racing rival satellite communications companies including OneWeb and Amazon.com Inc’s (AMZN.O) yet to launch Project Kuiper.

Sept. 14, 2022 — (Editor’s Note: Viewpoint submissions on these and other topics are always welcome as part of our goal to encourage community discussion and exchange of perspectives.)
Oregon’s unaffiliated voters: more partisan than you might think
If Oregon’s registered Democrats vote Democratic in this November’s general election, and the Republicans vote Republican, those numbers alone won’t come close to settling the deal. A big reason: The largest group of voters in Oregon are the NAVs: i.e., those who register as “nonaffiliated”
(full disclosure: I’m one of them.).
But what does that mean for the outcome of the general election in another couple of months?
If you dive into the numbers – which is where elections are won and lost – you find fewer answers than you might first think.
The NAV move to becoming the most numerous among Oregon voters occurred just this year, but it’s not a dramatic or sweeping development. Today – that is, according to the August voter registration figures compiled by the Secretary of State’s office – nonaffiliates comprised 34.4 percent of all Oregon voters, compared with Democrats at 34.2 percent and Republicans at 24.7 percent. The Independent Party came in at 4.7 percent (you’ll notice the Democratic and NAV numbers still are close.).
Four years ago in 2018, the Independent Party nearly had the same percentage as it does now, but the Democrats (at 35.4 percent) and Republicans (at 25.8 percent) both had larger shares of the electorate. The NAVs, then at 32 percent, have since grown at the expense of both parties, apparently drawing from the two about evenly.
You can see similar patterns if you go back a full decade to 2012. Then, the Democrats accounted for 40 percent of the voters, Republicans accounted for 31.4 percent, and nonaffiliates were a mere 22 percent. The Independent Party accounted for 4 percent, not far off where they are today.
The sector of the nonaffiliated, in contrast, has grown by more than half in the last decade.
A variety of reasons may account for this, beyond dissatisfaction with the major parties. Reed Collage political science professor, Paul Gronke, pointed out in 2019 that, “There are at least 300,000 new registrants since 2016 because of [The Oregon Motor Voter Act], and 80 percent or more of these did not respond to a postcard allowing them to affiliate.”
Whatever the causes, this has been a long-term, not a sudden development. The shift has taken years, and it has affected both political teams almost proportionately.
What can we tell about the people moving away from the parties?
Today, exactly half of Oregon’s counties have a plurality of nonaffiliated voters. The most nonaffiliated county in Oregon is one often considered the most Republican in the state: Malheur in the far east, which is 45.9 percent unaffiliated.
But don’t be too quick to jump to partisan conclusions: The least-nonaffiliated (or, you could say, the most partisan) county, with just 25.5 percent, is another strong GOP place: Wheeler County. The next three least-most partisan counties are as follows: Wallowa, Sherman, and Grant. These are strongly Republican in their voting patterns. But the fifth most overall partisan county is the strongly Democratic Benton.
If you look at which party leads the other for second place, you find a mix of Democratic and Republican counties. Counties where Democrats outnumber Republicans but trail the NAVs include Wasco, Marion, Lincoln, Columbia, Clatsop, Tillamook, and Deschutes. Their Republican-oriented counterparts are Malheur, Umatilla, Morrow, Jefferson, Curry, Coos, Josephine, Linn, Yamhill, Jackson, and Polk. The coast seems to like not affiliating and so do large sections of eastern and central Oregon, but these counties are widely varied.
Part of what’s worth noticing is that the parties in second place almost always continue to register wins at the polls. Ordinarily, whichever party registers more voters tends to win overall, no matter how many NAVs there are. That suggests nonaffiliated voters are not necessarily as independent [or as active] as you might think; they still tend to break between the parties, much like the rest of the counties around them.
The biggest regional exception to the move toward nonaffiliated votership has been the Portland metro area along with Lane County.
A decade ago, Multnomah County registered 23.6 percent of its voters as NAVs. That has risen since to 31.8 percent, an increase well below the state average. But the percentage of Democrats in the state’s largest county has stayed relatively steady over that time, declining just a little from 53.4 percent to 51.4 percent. Republicans, however, took a hit in Multnomah, falling from 15.8 percent to 10.6 percent. Since the Independent Party percentage barely budged, that suggests Multnomah expanded its NAV ranks mainly at the expense of Republicans.
Washington, Clackamas, and Lane counties, while less Democratic than Multnomah, all have Democratic pluralities, and, as a group, show a somewhat similar pattern. Washington County does have a percentage of nonaffiliates close to that of Democrats, though Republicans now trail far behind – a massive shift from 2012 when Republicans were in a competitive second place.
The nonaligned vote is one of the ways metro Oregon varies from the rest of the state.
In Oregon as a whole, nonaffiliated simply means voters who didn’t join with a party. It doesn’t mean they vote a lot differently from those who do [or are as active of voters as those who do].

Healthy Lifestyle: Why You Should Avoid Consumption Of Trans Fats Others Daily Trust
‘Healthy Lifestyle: Why You Should Avoid Consumption Of Trans Fats, Others’ – Daily Trust https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/healthy-lifestyle-why-you-should-avoid-consumption-of-trans-fats-others-daily-trust/
….Eat margarine in moderation—FG
The federal government has advised Nigerians to adopt healthy lifestyles in order to protect themselves from diseases and live long.
Dr Salma Ibrahim Anas, Director Family Health, Federal Ministry of Health, stated this in Abuja during the ministerial briefing and update on COVID-19 response and other developments in the health sector.
She said maintaining healthy lifestyle involves choices you make about what you eat, and attitude towards your environment among others.
She said every choice one made has an impact on his or her health.
She warned Nigerians against the consumption of trans fats, saying they are very dangerous to health.
Trans fats are a form of unsaturated fat, and can be either natural or artificial. Artificial trans fats are mostly formed during hydrogenation, a process in which hydrogen is added to vegetable oil to form a semisolid product known as partially hydrogenated oil.
Dr Anas said, “Unfortunately a lot of unhealthy fats have infiltrated our markets but we are working very closely with the National Agency for Food and Drugs Control and Administration (NAFDAC) to ensure that we avoid these fats.
“Our fats are hydrogenated, called trans fats and this is done to make them solid, so that they don’t burn off easily in the frying pan.
“But unfortunately, most business marketers, especially those that are in the food business, use trans fat and this is what is mostly used today in bread making, in cakes and several other snacks that we consume every day.”
While saying that trans fats generated a lot of problems to the circulation system, she said it caused people to have heart problems.
Dr Anas said Nigeria has one of the highest incidences of heart problems in Africa, all as a result of the consumption of unhealthy fats.
“Most of the fats have cholesterol and most of these fats are low-density cholesterol which is very dangerous, and it is called the bad fat.
“But there are healthy fats which give you high-density cholesterol. So we encourage Nigerians to be very careful and avoid all things that are trans fat,” she said, adding that margarine is a common form of trans fat.
“Nigerian should avoid it as much as they can. Nigerians like margarine, they even ask you to send it to them even when they are abroad, and they will tell you they want the Nigerian margarine; that Nigerian margarine is trans fat, we should avoid it as much as we can.”
She said Nigerians should generally eat healthy. “Most Nigerians will say they have access only to carbohydrate foods, but we have a lot of fruits, vegetables and can also balance with different varieties of protein and healthy fats. So, it’s not just quantity but quality is also vital.”
Advising on other ways Nigerians can maintain a healthy lifestyle, Dr Anas said, “I will start by saying drink a lot of water. Water is supposed to be priceless.
“Nigerians should drink adequate water to ensure that they are well hydrated at all times – whether it is during the cold or hot weather – to maintain their hydration.
“They should also ensure adequate sleep, a minimum of eight hours per day. It is very important and very critical so that you can refresh yourself.
“Exercise is very important too, and we must exercise at least 30 minutes’ walk per day. If you can do it most days of the week; you should walk to ensure that you are living healthy.”
The doctor also advised against smoking shisha saying it is one of the major causes of lung cancer in the country.
“Some people even go the extreme by adding some perfume to shisha before smoking it, and this causes so many health challenges in the country,” she added.
She also advised people to have a work-life balance, saying one has to be alive before one can work.
“We should make the right choices so that we remain healthy and live long and make meaningful contributions to the development of Nigeria,” she added.

Get Ready To Discover The Importance Of Using Aluminum Enclosures For Electronics Digital Journal
Get Ready To Discover The Importance Of Using Aluminum Enclosures For Electronics – Digital Journal https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/get-ready-to-discover-the-importance-of-using-aluminum-enclosures-for-electronics-digital-journal/
For the safety of our electrical gadgets, enclosures are used. This makes it possible to protect our electronic equipment from adverse weather, corrosion, rust, and damage. Because they may or may not improve the operating quality of the equipment within, enclosures are essential to its operation. It contains all of the cables, switches, and other electrical components in one location. Our electrical gadgets’ protection is often taken for granted, which reduces the device’s lifespan. Investing in the greatest enclosure that won’t interfere with any of the electrical device’s operations is one approach to assure its endurance. These are the three primary functions of an electronic enclosures.
One of the key objectives of aluminum enclosures for electronics is to prevent water ingress. Individuals who are looking forward to getting this benefit should think about going for an enclosure that is rated for IP68 waterproof. These electronic enclosures are sometimes used outside since they provide the greatest level of water ingress protection, IP68. They are susceptible to floods since they are exposed to extreme weather, therefore it’s a good thing our product can withstand some water immersion.
The second most important benefit that can be obtained out of aluminum enclosures for electronics is to provide protection against extreme heat. Extreme temperature exposure increases the risk of electronic equipment being damaged. After overheating, the majority of our electronic equipment slow down. Aluminum enclosures include heat sinks that enable the airflow of the electronics to cool down. Additionally, metal enclosures are efficient heat dissipators that prevent overheating of devices.
Moreover, aluminum enclosures for electronics can provide an extra layer of protection and security against risks, dents, and damages as well. Nothing is more crucial than making sure that electrical wires and tapes don’t come into contact with our bodies since an exposed wire poses a risk of shock. All of these cables and tapes are kept organized, confined, and safe from shock threats by enclosures. However, compared to metal enclosures, plastic enclosures reduce the possibility of shock dangers.
After discussing the many uses for enclosures, let’s move on to the various forms of electronic enclosures. To ensure that the component of the project box suits its functionality, it must be properly picked. Plastic and metal are the two major materials used for electronic enclosures.
Comparatively less expensive and lighter than metal boxes are plastic enclosures. It guarantees that the electrical gadgets within cannot hurt the human when touched because of its nonconductivity. The ABS Plastic enclosure, a more durable thermoplastic, is an example of a plastic enclosure.Stainless steel or aluminum are often used in metal enclosures or metal boxes. Although it costs more than plastic enclosures, be confident that the investment is worthwhile. Since metal enclosures are more enduring, they can support the device’s weight and RF shielding. While taking a look at the best aluminum enclosures for electronics available in the market, it is important to settle down with the best option out of them.

Proof Bitcoin Is Finally Dead – News.com.au https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/proof-bitcoin-is-finally-dead-news-com-au/
Bitcoin users are beginning to wonder if the blockchain is officially dead after its ninth consecutive month of languishing.
In a scathing opinion piece on Tuesday, Bloomberg writer Jake Lloyd-Smith brutally tore down the digital token.
Calling BTC a “train wreck” and “absolutely dire”, the author pointed out it was possible the coin could plunge so low as four digits in the near future.
Bitcoin is currently worth five figures, at US$19,566 (A$29,000) at time of writing.
That’s a significant decline when you consider that the crypto hit an all time high in November last year of US$69,000 (A$99,000) per coin.
Overall, that means the digital asset has plunged more than 70 per cent since then. So far this year, it is down 60 per cent in terms of its return on investment.
In fact, all bitcoin’s gains over the last two years of the pandemic have pretty much been wiped.

Mr Lloyd-Smith also said bitcoin’s difficult year had ruined any notion that it could be used as a way to hedge against inflation.
“It’s safe to say that right now, it’s definitely not for preservation of wealth,” he wrote.
He even compared cryptocurrency to the Dutch ‘tulip mania” phenomenon of the 1600s, when tulips became so hyped up and highly sought after that people would spend their fortunes to buy a single flower.
Inevitably, the craze crashed, leaving a few unlucky souls penniless and with nothing but a dying flower to show for it.
Cryptocurrency is closely aligned with the traditional stock market and it has not been a great year for stocks as the Ukraine-Russian war, inflation and fears of a global recession markets like Dow Jones have tanked and entered a bear run.
Mr Lloyd-Smith noted: ‘With delicious irony, the same week it (bitcoin) registered a record, the Fed warned of perilous plunges for risky assets should the economy take a turn for the worse. As the US central bank responded belatedly to inflation, Bitcoin tanked.”
Mr Lloyd-Smith wasn’t the only bitcoin proponent to hit the token while it was down.
On Tuesday morning, a Kenyan economist, Patrick Njoroge, said through a now-viral tweet that he should be put in a mental asylum if he ever poured his cash into bitcoin.
“I can assure you that I have a lot of people who have been pushing me to put our reserves in bitcoin. If I do that, please put me in Kamiti (a jail) and throw away the key because I’ll be out of my mind”.
Investing pro Warren Buffett is also not a fan of cryptocurrency.
Earlier this year, in May, the US billionaire said he wouldn’t buy “all of the bitcoin in the world” for $US25.

WASHINGTON, Sept 19 (Reuters) – A U.S. judge on Monday denied the Justice Department’s bid to stop UnitedHealth Group (UNH.N) from buying Change Healthcare (CHNG.O), in a blow to the U.S. administration’s tougher enforcement of antitrust issues.
Change shares rose 7% after the close of trading.
The Justice Department had filed a lawsuit in February aimed at stopping the $8 billion acquisition, saying the deal would give the largest U.S. health insurer access to its competitors’ data and ultimately push up healthcare costs.

The department’s top antitrust official, Jonathan Kanter, said they are “reviewing the opinion closely to evaluate next steps”.
UnitedHealth announced the all-cash deal in January 2021, saying it would help streamline administrative and payment processes.
Judge Carl Nichols said in a brief order on Monday that he would deny the government’s request to stop the deal, and ordered the companies to go forward with an asset sale that they had proposed.
The order follows a trial in the case in August in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
UnitedHealth said it was “pleased with the decision” and looked forward to combining with Change as quickly as possible.
The Justice Department had said that UnitedHealth and Change Healthcare offer competing software for processing healthcare claims and together serve 38 of the top-40 health insurers in the country.
The department argued that access to the claims would give UnitedHealth a view into rivals’ health plans, including Humana Inc (HUM.N), Anthem Inc and others.
The loss for the Justice Department follows a recent decision by a Federal Trade Commission judge that genetic analysis equipment maker Illumina should be allowed to buy cancer detection test maker Grail – a move opposed by the agency. read more

But the agencies have also had wins, and successfully killed planned deals by Aon Plc and Willis Towers Watson Plc as well as Lockheed Martin’s plan to buy engine maker Aerojet Rocketdyne.

Benton Auditor Rules If A GOP Candidate Voted Illegally In The Last Election – Tri-City Herald https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/benton-auditor-rules-if-a-gop-candidate-voted-illegally-in-the-last-election-tri-city-herald/
Richland, WA
The Benton County auditor on Monday dismissed a challenge accusing Jerrod Sessler, a failed candidate for Washington state’s 4th Congressional District seat, of providing false information for his voter registration.
John Trumbo accused Sessler of not living at the rural Prosser address where he registered to vote and then casting ballots in nine elections in Benton County. Both are Republicans.
Trumbo is a Kennewick city councilman, but was acting as a private citizen when he filed the challenge, he said.
The burden of proof rests with the challenger, who must provide “clear and convincing” evidence, said Benton County Auditor Brenda Chilton in her decision in Sessler’s favor.
Sessler said in a hearing Sept. 9 in Richland that he lived at the address he listed on his voter registration application in 2019 and lives there now, Chilton said.
Trumbo argued that Sessler did not live at the property he owns on Old Inland Empire Highway because he had not obtained an occupancy permit needed to reside in a house that is being built on the property, and he also had not obtained a temporary housing permit to live in a motor home parked at the site.
Jerrod Sessler HomeTask
Trumbo said he believed Sessler actually was living “a good part of the time” with a neighbor, but did not provide proof of that, according to Chilton.
She said in her decision that the question of what permits Sessler possesses does not determine whether he physically resides on the property listed on his voter registration.
“Even though Mr. Sessler has provided what could be considered a traditional residential address, the fact that the law provides for voters to register at locations such as public parks — where taking up residence is ordinarily discouraged — suggests that the question of whether a person’s residence complies with local rules or ordinances is irrelevant when considering whether one can register as resident in that place for voting purposes,” Chilton said in her decision.
Trumbo told the Tri-City Herald on Monday that since he doesn’t know where Sessler lives, it was difficult to prove that he doesn’t live at the address on his voter registration.
“It is not over,” Trumbo said.
John Trumbo
Sessler did not immediately reply Monday to a request for a comment on the decision.
Sessler said during the hearing that for voting purposes living on a property is sufficient, even if a person has not been staying in an ordinary home. He said there were multiple mobile homes on the property.
At the hearing, when Chilton asked him if there is a permanent house on the property where he now resides, Sessler said he had a problem with her questioning.
He said if he answered the question Trumbo and the Tri-City Herald would use the information to slander his character.
Sessler: ‘Nonstop’ attacks
Both Trumbo and Sessler were allowed to question each other in the Sept. 9 hearing.
When Trumbo pressed Sessler on where he was living now, Sessler declined to answer.
Bob Brawdy bbrawdy@tricityherald.com
“I am a private person and I feel like I am due the same privacy that any other citizen is due to protect their family, especially in the kind of world that we live in today,” Sessler said. “As a result of the work that the challenger has undertaken, that is now completely shattered.”
He said he has had to install expensive security and has had to “walk out and confront people with guns to protect ourselves on our property.”
That is due to Trumbo’s “salacious” and “nonstop” attacks on him, Sessler said.
Three months ago Sessler went to court seeking a no-contact order against an opponent’s campaign manager, claiming that man also was harassing him and acting aggressively toward him.
Sessler was trying to get a protection order against Loren Culp’s campaign manager, Christopher Gergen, following a heated confrontation at a Yakima campaign event in May.
Sessler was one of six Republicans challenging Rep. Dan Newhouse, R-Wash., for his congressional seat in the .
Newhouse and Doug White, a Democrat, both from Yakima County, received the most votes and will appear on the Nov. 8 ballot.

The actress and her husband joined a familiar friend in the Tennessee city.
After a fruitful visit to Disneyland, Kristen Bell and her husband, fellow actor Dax Shepard, traveled to Nashville, Tennessee.
There, they joined a familiar face for fans of Bell’s hit comedy series The Good Place: cast member Kirby Howell-Baptiste, who played Simone.
It looks like Howell-Baptiste and Bell formed a strong connection while working on the fan-favorite show, as the two had a great time in Nashville.
Bell posted a handful of pictures from the trip of herself, Shepard, Howell-Baptiste, and actor and model Larry Fields, who Howell-Baptiste wrote a children’s book called Little Black Boy: Oh, the Things You Will Do! with.
Howell-Baptiste and Fields are likely partners as well, as the two attend many events together, and it looks like they share a pet cat, but nothing has been publicly confirmed.
Bell captioned the update, “#bristol baby! Thank u @nascar for the fun Nashville for the style and @kirbyhowellbaptiste and @iamlarryfields for being the best travel buddies. And as always the hostess with the mostess @hays_estes.”
The four watched a Nascar race at Bristol Motor Speedway, ate some good food together, and in Bell and Howell-Baptiste’s case, wore matching jewelry.

They also got a photo with Nascar driver Bubba Wallace, while another picture shows Shepard lifting Bell up for a dramatic kiss.
Howell-Baptiste commented on Bell’s post, “SEXY,” about the pair’s matching rings that spell out the word.
Many fans loved seeing Bell and her former co-star together again, with one person commenting, “MY BEST DUO.”
In The Good Place, Simone first appears at the beginning of Season 3, when the crew is sent back to Earth in an experiment to see if they can become better people.
She dates Chidi (William Jackson Harper) for a while, showing up again later in the afterlife.
Now, Howell-Baptiste stars in Netflix‘s The Sandman as Death, while Bell voices Abby in Central Park.
