The answers include how to withdraw crypto or complete transactions initiated using Tornado Cash prior to its sanction and how to deal with “dusting” transactions. Treasury Department Publishes Tornado Cash FAQs The U.S. Department of the Treasury answered some frequently asked questions Tuesday about the sanctioned cryptocurrency mixing service Tornado Cash. On Aug. 8, the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned the Ethereum-based mixer and prohibited U.S. persons from “engaging in any transaction with Tornado Cash or its blocked property or interests in property.” One of the questions concerns how to complete transactions involving Tornado Cash that were initiated prior to the sanction. In order to complete the transactions or withdraw cryptocurrency without violating U.S. sanctions regulations, the Treasury Department explained: U.S. persons or persons conducting transactions within U.S. jurisdiction may request a specific license from OFAC to engage in transactions involving the subject virtual currency. “U.S. persons should be prepared to provide, at a minimum, all relevant information regarding these transactions with Tornado Cash, including the wallet addresses for the remitter and beneficiary, transaction hashes, the date and time of the transaction(s), as well as the amount(s) of virtual currency,” the Treasury added. Another question relates to reporting obligations of “dusting” transactions. The Treasury noted that the OFAC is aware that “certain U.S. persons may have received unsolicited and nominal amounts of virtual currency or other virtual assets from Tornado Cash, a practice commonly referred to as ‘dusting.’” While cautioning that “Technically, OFAC’s regulations would apply to these transactions,” the Treasury explained that if these dusting transactions have no other sanctions nexus besides Tornado Cash: OFAC will not prioritize enforcement against the delayed receipt of initial blocking reports and subsequent annual reports of blocked property from such U.S. persons. The Treasury stressed that “U.S. persons are prohibited from engaging in transactions involving Tornado Cash, including through the virtual currency wallet addresses that OFAC has identified.” However, the authority clarified: Interacting with open-source code itself, in a way that does not involve a prohibited transaction with Tornado Cash, is not prohibited. Lawyer Jake Chervinsky shared his thoughts on the OFAC’s clarification in a series of tweets. He noted that the FAQs “don’t fully address the collateral damage caused by the designation.” Commenting on the OFAC requiring “each person to file their own individual license request,” Chervinsky said: “That shouldn’t be necessary: U.S. persons shouldn’t have to ‘apply’ for their own money.” Regarding dusting, he said since victims are required to file initial blocking reports and subsequent annual reports, “Enforcement remains on the table if those reports are delayed.” The lawyer stressed: Deprioritizing prosecution isn’t enough: OFAC shouldn’t consider prosecuting victims at all. US President Joe Biden and South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa pledged to cooperate on health, security and climate on Friday, as the South African head of state visited the White House. The visit comes weeks after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken traveled to South Africa and said that Washington sees African countries as “equal partners” in tackling global issues. What did the two leaders say? “We really need to make sure we fully understand one another,” Biden said of South Africa. “Our partnership is essential.” Ramaphosa said he sought to work together on security, including in neighboring Mozambique, which has been grappling with an Islamist insurgency in its northern Cabo Delgado province. He added that Washington had a “key” role to play in security in the continent. South Africa’s president said he was thankful for the United State’s “considerable support” during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ramaphosa said that he also sought to cooperate with the US on climate change. Following the meeting, the United States announced a South African-US investment advisory task force and $45 million (€45 million) in funding towards the transition away from coal. At last year’s Glasgow climate conference, developed countries pledged $8.5 billion for South Africa’s transition away from coal. South Africa and other developing countries have long demanded that wealthier countries bear the brunt of efforts to reduce emissions. Cryptocurrencies run on constructs called blockchains. 17 September,2022 08:31 am SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A complex software change to the cryptocurrency ethereum holds the potential to dramatically reduce its energy consumption — and resulting climate-related pollution. But the transition known as “the merge” is not going to do the trick by itself. With the change enacted late Wednesday, ethereum — the world’s second most valuable cryptocurrency after bitcoin — has effectively eliminated the energy-intensive task of “mining” new coins on its blockchain. Mining requires enormous computing power, which translates to huge energy consumption and, in many areas, greater greenhouse gas emissions at older power plants. By itself, however, the ethereum change won’t eliminate crypto’s expected environmental impact, although it’s expected to help a great deal. The backers of bitcoin have so far shown little interest in doing away with mining. BACK UP A SECOND. WHAT IS CRYPTOCURRENCY? Cryptocurrency is a type of digital money secured via encryption in a publicly viewable and purportedly unalterable way. Using these currencies, people can make direct financial transactions without any need for a bank or other financial intermediaries. They run on constructs called blockchains, which consist of digitally signed transaction records that document every time a crypto coin is transferred or spent. Blockchains are also known as distributed ledgers because synchronized copies are stored on computers around the world; these copies also make it extremely difficult to alter, insert or destroy blockchain records. IS CRYPTO BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT? Researchers who have studied cryptocurrency are alarmed by its enormous energy usage. A recent report by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy cited research findings that as of August 2022, annual electricity consumption for cryptocurrency exceeded that of individual nations such as Argentina or Australia. This problem, however, isn’t inherent to cryptocurrency. Most of that energy is used for mining, a computationally intensive process for verifying blockchain transactions that also distributes new coins as rewards for competing miners. Crypto mining favors well-resourced groups that can put together a lot of specialized computers and supply them with electricity as cheaply as possible. That can have unexpected external effects. Prior to the plunge in cryptocurrency values earlier this year, demand for computer graphics cards soared, pushing up prices and emptying store shelves — much to the chagrin of gamers. Such cards turned out to be ideal for crypto mining rigs. Cities and states in the U.S. have also pushed back against crypto firms’ plans to build mining sites in their jurisdictions, citing not only power usage but noise. SO WHAT DOES THE ETHEREUM CHANGE DO? Primarily, the software update eliminates the need for miners. Where ethereum previously set miners against each other to solve complex cryptographic puzzles and win new coin as rewards, it now requires parties who want to help validate transactions to put some skin in the game by “staking” a certain amount of ether, the ethereum coin. Parties from this pool are randomly chosen to validate a block of transactions; a wider group of ether holders will then check their work. Successful validators get paid a reward in ether that is generally proportional to the size of their stake and the length of time they’ve held it. WILL THAT HELP THE ENVIRONMENT? The ethereum merge many not sound like much, but it could have dramatic effects. Alex de Vries, an economist and founder of the Digiconomist consultancy that focuses on the environmental impact of cryptocurrencies, calculates the shift will result in energy savings of between 99% and 99.99% for ethereum. (De Vries emphasizes that his work has not yet been peer reviewed.) “It’s a really small change to the code that’s going to have a very big impact on environmental sustainability,” he said. Prior to the merge, ethereum was doing up to 900 billion calculations per second that are now not needed anymore. According to his calculations, ethereum was responsible for about 44 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. If he’s correct, these will now be drastically reduced. On the other hand, bitcoin’s energy usage and greenhouse gas emission is significantly larger than ethereum’s — and there doesn’t seem to be much enthusiasm for moving away from bitcoin mining. But while the political message from Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida and Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas was clear, the abrupt drop-offs left uncertain what would happen to the human beings involved and raised complicated questions about how the immigration system works, what rights migrants have and what legal issues are involved. Immigration lawyers and legal observers said they were still determining whether any laws were broken when Mr. Abbott sent nearly a hundred migrants, including children, to be dropped off by bus without warning outside the vice president’s residence in Washington, and when Mr. DeSantis arranged for about 50 more to be flown on chartered planes to Martha’s Vineyard, the island vacation spot in Massachusetts. Here’s what we know so far. The migrants were already in immigration limbo. The migrants transported to Martha’s Vineyard are Venezuelans who recently crossed the southwest border without authorization and turned themselves in to border officials. The migrants who were dropped at Vice President Kamala Harris’s home were from Colombia, Cuba, Guyana, Nicaragua and Panama and came into the country in the same manner. After they were taken into custody, they were screened and released to face proceedings in the future. The Biden administration has been using this process with nearly all of the Cuban and Venezuelan border crossers because it lacks the diplomatic relations with those countries that would be necessary to send them back to those countries. But many of the migrants likely plan to claim asylum, declaring that they face violence or persecution in their home countries and are afraid to return. Under American law, any migrant has the right to do so, starting a process in which federal officials determine whether the claim is valid and they can obtain authorization to reside legally in the United States. That process faces a yearslong backlog, meaning that these migrants, like many in the United States, are living in a state of immigration limbo. It’s legal for states to transport migrants, but the drop-offs raise questions. Under the law, once migrants have been released by border officials and served documents to appear in court, they are no longer in federal custody and are free to travel within the United States. It is not illegal for a state government to pay for that travel. But if there is evidence the migrants were lied to by state officials about where they were going or what awaited them, as some attorneys have alleged, the migrants could pursue tort suits for fraud or severe emotional distress, according to Heidi Li Feldman, a professor at Georgetown University. Iván Espinoza-Madrigal, the executive director for Lawyers for Civil Rights Boston who is representing some of the migrants sent to Martha’s Vineyard, said his clients were denied their constitutional right to due process, since the trip to Massachusetts likely means they will be unable to attend their immigration court appointments in San Antonio, Texas. “If you are coerced and induced onto an airplane under false promises and told you’ll be flying to one place and directed somewhere else in midair, that is a deprivation of liberty the Constitution forbids,” Mr. Espinoza-Madrigal said. Some lawyers have also said that federal agents deliberately listed incorrect addresses for the migrants, which would prevent them from receiving proper notifications for their immigration hearings. But it was unclear whether any laws were broken; it is not uncommon for a federal agent confronting a migrant who does not have an address in the United States to list the name of a homeless shelter in the destination to which the migrant says they are headed. While critics have compared the actions of Mr. DeSantis and Mr. Abbott to human trafficking or kidnapping, multiple lawyers cast doubt on the possibility that they could be prosecuted for such crimes because no evidence has surfaced that the migrants boarded the flights or buses unwillingly. Top Trump officials first weighed migrant drop-offs. Nonprofit organizations have for years helped migrants pay for flights and buses to join friends and relatives around the United States. But the plan for the government to use migrant drop-offs in Democratic cities and towns dates back to former President Donald J. Trump’s administration, when it was embraced by Stephen Miller, his senior adviser and the architect of his immigration policies. Mr. Miller and other immigration hard-liners in the administration saw the move as a way to retaliate against so-called sanctuary cities that limited their cooperation with federal immigration authorities. The idea was ultimately scrapped after it was rejected by Matthew Albence, then the acting deputy director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who raised concerns about liability issues if a migrant was injured during transport. He also said the agency’s budget had not been appropriated for the drop-offs. Critics of the recent migrant drop-offs have made comparisons to the so-called Reverse Freedom Rides arranged by white segregationists in 1962 to retaliate against those protesting segregation in the South. The segregationists misleadingly promised jobs and permanent housing to Black Americans, leading about 200 of them to travel north. Those families, too, were dropped off in Massachusetts, near the holiday home of President John F. Kennedy. %

YAK EVOLUTION Chinese researchers have revealed genetic and cellular mechanisms underlying adaptations of yak to low-oxygen environments. From promotions and new positions to farewells and award winners, here are the ballet world’s latest updates. Virginia Johnson to Retire, Robert Garland to Succeed as DTH Artistic Director Dance Theatre of Harlem announced that, after 12 years at the helm, artistic director Virginia Johnson will retire next June 30, 2023, following the conclusion of the 2022–23 season. Robert Garland, DTH’s current resident choreographer and school director, will succeed her on July 1, 2023. Tai Jimenez, a former principal dancer with DTH and Boston Ballet (the first Black ballerina to achieve this title at BB in 2006), will take over Garland’s duties as director of the DTH School. Johnson was a founding member and principal dancer with DTH, performing with the company for nearly three decades. Afterwards, she served as Pointe’s founding editor in chief from 2000–10. In 2009, DTH founder Arthur Mitchell appointed Johnson to succeed him as artistic director and revive the company. After her retirement in June, Johnson will become artistic director emerita. Updates From American Ballet Theatre American Ballet Theatre led a double wave of company updates with the announcement of its fall 2022 apprentice program dancers on August 30. Elisabeth Beyer, Tillie Glatz, Yuma Matsuura and Aleisha Walker join ABT’s main company as apprentices following its fall season. ABT also announced the appointment of former company soloist Yan Chen to the dual positions of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School pre-professional division principal teacher and ABT Studio Company rehearsal director, effective immediately. Iovino, originally from Brazil, joined BAZ in 2012 and has choreographed several works for the company since 2013. The company’s 2022–23 season kicks off with Iovino’s new work, Tierra de Ángeles, as part of its Contemporary Moves program September 22–25. Colorado Ballet Promotions and Retirements Colorado Ballet released a number of promotions for the upcoming season. Jessica Payne has been promoted to soloist; Bryce Lee, Ariel McCarty, Jeremy Studinski and Alexandra Wilson to demi-soloist; and Catherine Aoki, Sheridan Guerin and Catherine McGregor to corps de ballet. In addition, the company announced that principals Dana Benton and Yosvani Ramos will take their final bows at the end of the 2022–23 season. Benton will retire after 22 years with CB, having spent the past nine as a principal; Ramos, whose professional career has spanned 26 years, joined as a principal in 2015. Farewells and a New Associate Artistic Director at Complexions Contemporary Ballet Complexions Contemporary Ballet announced the departures of company artists Tim Stickney, Brandon Gray, Zion King and Emma Branson on August 5. Stickney, who joined in 2014, and Gray, who joined in 2017, were long-time members. On September 2, the company also congratulated former ballet master Meg Paul on her new role as associate artistic director, which she began in August. Paul will continue her duties as director of the Complexions Academy alongside her new appointment. Xander Parish Joins Norwegian National Ballet British ballet luminary Xander Parish has joined the Norwegian National Ballet as a principal; this news comes after his decision to depart from the Mariinsky Ballet last March following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In a recent Instagram post, Parish thanks NNB artistic director Ingrid Lorentzen for her invitation to join the company and expresses excitement for his new home in Oslo. He made his company debut on September 3, appearing as Prince Albrecht in Giselle. DaYoung Jung Returns to Oklahoma City Ballet as Rehearsal Director On September 9, Oklahoma City Ballet announced that former principal dancer DaYoung Jung, who retired this past May, returns to the company this season as rehearsal director. Jung will begin her new role immediately. Promotions and New School Leadership at Philadelphia Ballet Philadelphia Ballet announced the addition of five new dancers to its roster, as well as several promotions. Austin Eyler, Alexandra Heier and Pau Pujol have been promoted to soloist; Isaac Hollis, Gabriela Mesa and Nick Patterson to demi-soloist; and Mayfield Meyers, Cory Ogdahl, Paloma Berjano Torrado and Emily Wilson to corps de ballet. The company also welcomed former San Francisco Ballet principal Davit Karapetyan as its new school director. The 2022 Princess Grace Dance and Choreography Awardees The annual Princess Grace Awards, which recognize outstanding artists in dance, choreography, theater, film, animation and playwriting, revealed this year’s winners on August 4. The dance category awardees include New York City Ballet soloist Mira Nadon, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago artist Abdiel Figueroa Reyes and Gibney Company artist Jake Tribus; honoraria include Ashley Simpson of BalletX and Eleni Loving of The Juilliard School. This year’s choreography awardees are Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s Kameron N. Saunders, Bruce Wood Dance’s Omar Román de Jesús and A.I.M by Kyle Abraham’s Maleek Washington. Educator Promotions at San Francisco Ballet School San Francisco Ballet School announced the appointment of former SFB principal Pascal Molat to associate director of the trainee program. Molat joined the SFB School in 2016 as a ballet and trainee program assistant. Jason Ambrose was also promoted to children’s division principal on the SFB School faculty this summer after spending two years as a full-time men’s teacher. Sophie Martin Joins Staatsballet Karlsruhe This month, former Scottish Ballet principal Sophie Martin joins Germany’s Staatsballet Karlsruhe, according to an announcement she made on Instagram on August 22. Texas Ballet Theater Instills Rankings On September 7, Texas Ballet Theater announced its implementation of company ranks, revealing seven company artists as principals: Carl Coomer, Alexandra Farber, Alexander Kotelenets, Paige Nyman, David Schrenk, Andre Silva and Nicole Von Enck. In the press release, acting artistic director Tim O’Keefe states: “Rankings are traditionally how a ballet company is organized. Black Entrepreneurs Face Tough Adventure Landing Venture Capital – St. Louis American https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/black-entrepreneurs-face-tough-adventure-landing-venture-capital-st-louis-american/ Finding more venture capital for minority and women-owned start-up firms could help bolster the region’s business community in many ways, says Doug Villhard, director of Olin Business School’s entrepreneurship program at Washington University in St. Louis. According to a Bloomberg report, Black/African American and Hispanic/Latinx founders received just 2% or less of the total venture capital in 2021. Just 2% of venture capital money went to female business founders. “This funding gap shortchanges not only underrepresented founders but also the vitality of the entire innovation community,” Villhard said. Villhard and Wash U are partnering with the Brookings Institution, a nonprofit public policy think tank based in Washington, “to develop policy-based solutions for the historically lopsided funding support available to underrepresented minorities and women,” according to a release. A nine-member commission that includes entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and public policy experts will oversee and guide the project while providing input and insight from the perspective of innovation practitioners. The goal is to address questions including: What are the root causes of this inequity? What impact does this have on the economy? What solutions can address it? “Rather than simply talk about the past, this commission intends to identify meaningful public policy solutions to drive more equitable funding, unlock more potential and further spur our economy,” Villhard said.   The project is the second backed by a $750,000 grant to Olin Business School from The Bellwether Foundation. The grant called for three separate annual commissions — formed jointly with Brookings — tackling “megatrend” issues affecting the quality of life in the region and across the country. The first Olin Brookings Commission project concluded in April, and saw participants develop an artificial intelligence-driven tool to flag suspicious shipments of prescription opioids and developed policy recommendations designed to empower the tool’s use among federal agencies, law enforcement and industry. In November, the commission will host a national conference of researchers presenting work focused on unearthing the root causes for disproportionate funding and informing any potential public and private policy solutions to address the yawning gap. The conference will be held at the Brookings Institution. Daniel Elfenbein, professor of organization and strategy at Olin, will serve as chair of the conference. In addition to Villhard and Elfenbein, the project will be led by WashU faculty members Dedric Carter, Olin’s professor of practice in entrepreneurship and WashU’s vice chancellor for innovation and chief commercialization officer; and Gisele Marcus, professor of practice. A key component of the Bellwether funding calls for student involvement. Ming Zhu Wang, a fifth-year Olin PhD student in strategy, will organize related research, along with five entrepreneurship fellows pursuing master’s in business administration degrees, who will assist with planning, research, and feedback. The study shows nearly 3000 African American adults, who reported more frequent church attendance, private prayer and “feeling God’s presence” were more likely to meet the American Heart Association’s key metrics for optimal cardiovascular health, compared to others reporting less frequent religious participation or no such beliefs. The key metrics for optimal cardiovascular health according to the American Heart Association Life’s Simple 7 metrics are based on smoking, diet, physical activity, body mass index, blood pressure, total cholesterol and fasting glucose with an 8th metric, sleep. The Jackson Heart Study is the largest single-site, community-based investigation of cardiovascular disease among African American adults in the U.S. On average, participants were 54 years old at study enrollment, and 66% were women. The ongoing study, initiated in 1998, includes more than 5,000 adults ages 21- to 84-years-old who identify as African American and living in the tri-county area of Jackson, Mississippi. I believed in God and believed that God sustained me all those months. I wasn’t feeling good and wasn’t getting the care I needed. God sustained me and kept me until the doctors found out what was wrong with me because after they found what was wrong with me the doctor told me I probably had about a week left then the mass heart attack would have taken me out. I believe that was due only to faith and prayer that God did not let that happen,” Veloris said. According to the American Heart Associations’ 2017 “Cardiovascular Health in African Americans” scientific statement, African Americans have poorer overall cardiovascular health than non-Hispanic white people, and death from cardiovascular diseases is higher in African American adults than white adults. “Spirituality improves your quality of life because you have a source or resource which is God in order to cast your cares on,” Veloris said. Throughout scripture, there are over 100 Bible verses from the Old and New Testament on God’s guidance to good health, as it is considered of high importance. Two scriptures that Veloris and her husband Frank Mann look to are 3 John 1:2 and Hebrews 12:11. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace. This is for those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:11 “This gives the three components you need and one of them is good health,” said Frank. “I’ve been training since I was 15 in health and fitness, I’m a professional bodybuilder but the key thing is you have to have discipline. I believe if you take care of yourself, if you do your part, the Lord is always going to do his.” Doing his part, Frank at 53, recently placed top 5 in the 2022 IFBB Pro League World at the Masters BodyBuilding Competition in July 2022. He has been dedicated and disciplined for 40 years in health and fitness. “I did that competition to show everybody you can still achieve good health you just have to put in the work,” said Frank. This is the only body that we have. We need to make health a priority.” “Health professionals and researchers should acknowledge the importance of religious and spiritual influences in the lives of African Americans – who tend to be highly religious,” said the study’s lead author LaPrincess C. Brewer, M.D., M.P.H., a preventive cardiologist and assistant professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. “With religious and spiritual beliefs factored into our approaches, we may make major breakthroughs in fostering the relationship between patients and physicians and between community members and scientists to build trust and sociocultural understanding of this population.” “Our findings highlight the substantial role that culturally tailored health promotion initiatives and recommendations for lifestyle change may play in advancing health equity,” she added. “The cultural relevance of interventions may increase their likelihood of influencing cardiovascular health and also the sustainability and maintenance of healthy lifestyle changes.” Frank is also a personal trainer. The deal will allow LootMogul to withdraw funds by issuing equity shares to GEM without a minimum drawdown obligation, and allowing the startup to control when and how much funds will be used. The move follows a partnership announced in August with the open-source blockchain DigitalBits for the creation of the MOGUL tokens, a native token for its gaming ecosystem. The token is set to be added with an XDB/MOGUL liquidity pool on the decentralized exchange NicoSwap. With funds of 3.4 billion, GEM has been a source of capital for other startups in the crypto space. In June, the group invested $200 million in the CeDeFi exchange Unizen, and $150 million in the South Africa-based H20 Securities through the sale of the H20N token.

But the aid does not include the ATACMs, which have a longer range than the artillery and rocket systems delivered to Ukraine so far. A number of lawmakers from both parties support Ukraine’s request for the missiles, which have a range of up to 300 kilometers or about 185 miles. But the Biden administration said last month that Ukraine does not need the longer-range ATACMs, saying that other shorter-range rockets and missiles have proven effective against Russian forces. On Tuesday, President Joe Biden said that “we’re not going to send to Ukraine rocket systems that strike into Russia,” though he did not specify whether Washington had ruled out certain weapons. “It’s not on the table at this time,” a senior U.S. official said Friday when asked about the long-range missiles.  But the official said the dynamics of the battlefield can change and “as their needs evolve, the types of assistance evolves.” The official said Ukraine was able to hit Russian targets with the weapons it has at ranges of less than 100 miles, and added that “there really isn’t much of a pressing need to be firing at a greater distance.” A Pentagon spokesman said senior leaders are in “regular contact with our Ukrainian partners to assess and support their requirements.” “As evidenced by their recent progress, they continue to employ the capabilities provided to them by the U.S. and international community to great effect on the battlefield,” the spokesman added. “We remain committed to supporting them in their fight to defend their nation.” Since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, the Biden administration has shifted its stance on which weapons it is ready to provide to Ukraine’s military as the war has unfolded, amid repeated appeals from Ukraine, Eastern European allies and U.S. lawmakers. The administration initially withheld approval for requests for Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, Howitzer artillery pieces, anti-ship missiles and HIMARS systems, but later gave the green light to the weapons shipments.  However, the administration has remained opposed to supplying fighter jets to Kyiv, saying other weapons would be more effective in the war and that warplanes could escalate tensions with Moscow. Throughout the conflict, the White House has tried to strike a balance between showing resolve toward Russia without provoking a response that could draw in the United States or NATO as a direct party to the war. Ukraine so far has chosen not to strike targets in Russian territory with the powerful artillery and rockets systems provided by the United States and other governments, and supporters of Ukraine say Kyiv has every incentive to stick to that approach or else risk losing Western military support. Democratic Rep. Jason Crow of Colorado praised the Biden administration for the support given to Ukraine so far, but said he has been urging officials to provide ATACMs as well as long-range armed drones and even U.S. military advisers to help Ukrainian forces on the ground.  “They’re not going to ask for something they can’t use. They’re not going to ask for something they’re going to misuse. This assumes significance given the representation by Indian Banks Association (IBA) to the government seeking intervention of the antitrust panel to address chip shortage that is hitting issuance of credit and debit cards. Semiconductor industry executives, however, attribute this to market forces. They say that once the pandemic set in, certain products like laptops and smartphones took priority over others, triggered primarily by action taken by consumer segments such as car companies. This resulted in OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) of certain sectors releasing the slots at fabrication units allocated to automakers to cater to demand from other high-value items such as laptops, smartphones, headphones, etc, demand of which spiked as people started working from home. “Just like we reserve railway tickets in advance and there is a wait list, one has to book slots to have chips manufactured in advance. If you don’t, you lose your slot. A lot of automotive companies cancelled their slots (when the pandemic started) with the assumption that they will not be requiring it,” Sanjay Gupta, Vice President & India Managing Director at the Netherlands-headquartered NXP Semiconductors told The Indian Express. NXP Semiconductors is one of the three largest semiconductor suppliers to automotive companies in the world. “This was because having the slots would mean you pay for some of the expenses. Running a fab takes millions of dollars a day. Automotive companies thought that supplies will not be required in the first couple of quarters of 2020 and they released those slots. But there was another phenomenon that was happening — work from home, study from home, gym from home, basically everything from home. Nobody had predicted this phenomenon. Digitisation that was expected to happen in a 5-10 year timeframe, happened in literally one quarter,” Gupta said, adding that once the demand for cars came back, it was difficult for auto companies to get those slots back. “Automotive companies barely got their slots back and whatever they could get back they got it at a higher price”. And, need I remind you, Japan is the country where globally iconic characters like Mario, Link, Pikachu, Tom Nook, and (outside of Nintendo headquarters) Cloud Strife were all born. It wasn’t even like Splatoon 3 just narrowly eeked out the record-breaking sales, either. The previous all-time record holder was Pokémon Black and White, which sold a whopping 2.08 million copies in just two days. If we narrow our field to the Switch, the record for three-day launch sales belonged to (unsurprisingly) Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which sold 1.88 million copies in three days. Very impressive, especially considering that just a short while beforehand, Splatoon 2 had made headlines for being the first game in over a decade to sell 2 million copies in Japan over its lifetime. (Remember how we all played New Horizons when it launched because we were all stuck at home? Good times. I won’t lie: part of me kind of misses that camaraderie.) But then came Splatoon 3. Splatoon 3, on the other hand, sold 3.45 million copies in its first three days. In Japan alone. THREE MILLION FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND COPIES IN THREE DAYS IN ONE COUNTRY. As Forbes points out, the original Splatoon‘s lifetime sales across the entire globe were 4.95 million. And so Splatoon 3 is now the best-selling game at launch in Japanese history. I’ve certainly been seeing it around: electronics stores have been touting the game quite ostentatiously. The downside of this for me is that my Splatfest region is Japan, and given the lifetime popularity of the series here, everyone is much, much better at Splatoon than I am. Ah well. In 1994, Charmaine and St. Louis American publisher Dr. Donald M. Whatever his mom, Miriam, put on the plate, he would eat — sometimes up to four portions. In-between meals, he would down unhealthy snacks, sodas or juices with a high sugar content. Parra still can put away the food. He’s 15 years old, after all. But the Valley teenager is making wiser decisions to feed that teenage appetite, drinking water instead of soda – with the occasional Dr. Pepper mixed in – and eating more vegetables and fruit. Miriam is helping as well, cooking with less oil and encouraging Derek and her other children to get their sugar from fruit instead of candy. They’ve fallen off the wagon at times, but they’ve also learned what to eat and, just as importantly, how to eat. “We’re very conscious about what we’re eating,” Miriam said through an interpreter. “That information has stuck with us.” Those healthier choices — and the education needed to change habits — are exactly what Gabriel Shaibi, a professor in Arizona State University’s Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation, hoped to accomplish when he launched a program six years ago to help Valley Latino children, ages 12 to 18, who were predisposed to diabetes. The results of the study, which was boosted in 2021 with a $3.3 million grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, were published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Among the findings: There was a 10% improvement in glucose tolerance (a measure of how kids process sugar) after 12 months. There was a 37% increase in insulin sensitivity (a measure of how well the body uses insulin) after six months. The kids in the study reported a 10% increase in their weight-related quality of life after 12 months. “What we learned is that these kids, when you provide them access to preventative services, they can do better,” said Shaibi, the principal investigator on the project. Shaibi said the impetus for the study was data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that showed Latino children are predisposed for diabetes at a rate between 1.5 and 1.7 times higher than white children. “We designed a study that says, ‘You know, we appreciate that there’s disparities in the community,’” Shaibi said. “And these disparities are not just about the haves or have-nots but these kids also have a really difficult time accessing traditional health care services.” The program, which included 117 families from around the Valley, was a collaborative effort between ASU, Valley of the Sun YMCA, St. Vincent de Paul and Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the latter two of which recruited families and helped design the curriculum. The dual focuses: Education and exercise. “The real key is how do I implement this into my day-to-day life,” said Micah Olson, medical director for the Type 2 diabetes program at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and a co-author and co-investigator on the study. “And that is not easy, especially in the environment that we live in today, where calories come very cheap and it’s hard to move our bodies the way we used to. “So the hypothesis of the study was: Can we deliver this information in a way that’s culturally focused and delivered by teachers that culturally speak the language and would that be more effective in having kids and families make the kind of changes that we’re asking them to do, compared to what we might do in the halls of a medical clinic?” Parents and their children made their way to the downtown Phoenix YMCA once a week to do physical exercises, learn how to make better food choices, and both modify and keep track of their behavior. The exercise programs were designed by YMCA trainers, and bilingual health educators and dieticians from St. Vincent’s and Phoenix Children’s Hospital were on hand to help families that didn’t speak English. “It’s all delivered in the community, by the community, for the community,” Shaibi said. “We think that is pretty unique because it’s not, ‘Hey, come to our clinic at ASU.’ It’s, ‘We’re going to bring the research to the community where it can best be implemented.’” The families were given assignments, one of which was being handed coupons for Food City and having to find ingredients for a healthy meal at less than $5 per person. “That becomes their homework,” Shaibi said. “Can you go out, shop for and prepare a healthy meal on that budget? That was eye opening to some of these families.” The following week, the families would talk about the healthy meal they made and how they were surprised they could do so on such a limited budget. It’s all delivered in the community, by the community, for the community. — Gabriel Shaibi, professor, Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation “We made it a little bit of a competition as well,” said Elvia Lish, director of the Ivy Center for Family Wellness at St. Vincent de Paul. “We’d tell them, ‘It has to be delicious, but it has to be cost-effective.’ And then whoever has the lowest cost meals won the prize or the game. They came up with really great examples that highlighted you don’t have to eat really expensive foods in order to be healthy.” The families were also given healthy recipes they could cook. “It gave me a sense of nutrition, like certain things that I was not supposed to eat too much of and how to eat a balanced diet,” Miriam Parra said. Libby Corral, chief operating officer of the YMCA, said the shared experiences of the families brought them together in a way individual diet, exercise and nutrition programs could not. “They really developed that sense of community,” Corral said. “We had these groups of families and kids that have the same issues and are able to learn from each other and support each other. They built friendships and relationships that outlasted the program itself.” Shaibi’s hope is that the study has generational benefits for families. The children who exercise and develop healthy eating habits today will be the parents who teach their own children those behaviors tomorrow. To do its part, the YMCA has given all 117 families in the study free six-month memberships. “We know these types of diseases travel in families,” Shaibi said. “If you are a kid whose parents have diabetes, you’re more likely to get diabetes. But we also know that prevention and behaviors track in families. If your parents were active, you’re more likely to be active and so on.” Although the study is complete, the work isn’t. Shaibi and his team have received an additional round of funding to continue the research and target entire households over the next five years. “We’re trying to have a bigger effect,” he said. “It can be mom, dad, cousins, grandparents, whoever’s living in the household.” Top photo: Participants in the program after a fitness class at the YMCA.
