It also has applied the highest standards in waste management and water consumption, reducing electricity and water consumption as well as maximizing the effectiveness of wastewater purification. “The new facility allows us to purchase corn and convert it into corn-based starches and sweeteners, so that we can better meet customer needs both in Indonesia and international markets,” said Ming Peng, managing director of Cargill Starches, Sweeteners and Texturizers Asia. “We believe with the new mill we can better support government in growing Indonesia’s food and beverage industry by enhancing capacity as well as competitiveness in the international markets. Individuals who lace up their sneakers and walk for 9,800 steps per day are half as likely to develop dementia as their inactive peers. What This Brain Health Study Found To come to this conclusion, scientists from Australia and Denmark dove into data from the UK Biobank, a database of in-depth health information from about 500,000 U.K. residents. For this study, they selected 78,430 participants; 44.7% male and 55.3% female, with an average age of 61 at the beginning of the research. All were heart-disease- and dementia-free at the outset. Rather than using self-reported activity levels, each person wore an accelerometer (to measure the rate of movement) 24 hours per day and 7 days each week to track their physical activity levels. The scientists controlled for other variables including age, sex, race, socioeconomic status, smoking and diet, and found that 866 people, about 1%, had developed dementia by the time of the follow-up around 7 years later. Both the total step quantity and the speed of the steps affected dementia risk, they found. The biggest benefit—about 50% lower dementia risk—was correlated with about 9,800 steps (approximately 5 miles) per day. Anything more didn’t further impact risk level. If you haven’t yet invested in a pair of walking shoes and that sounds too daunting, take heart: Racking up even less than half as many steps can still make a significant difference. Individuals who walked 3,826 steps each day reduced dementia risk by 25%. The best pace? More than 40 steps per minute, which is a doable less than 2 miles per hour. This is one of many studies that have found that staying in motion as you get older, even for a mere 10 minutes daily, can help your brain and body age at a slower pace. It would be nice even if it came in black, but this transparent case just looks way better. It’s the kind of gadget that will grab people’s attention. Previously, I’ve used all-aluminum power banks that always felt slippery and didn’t provide a lot of confidence when holding. Researchers at NewsGuard searched for content about prominent news topics on TikTok and say they found that nearly 1 in 5 of the videos automatically suggested by the platform contained misinformation. Searches for information about “mRNA vaccine,” for instance, yielded five videos (out of the first 10) that contained misinformation, including baseless claims that the COVID-19 vaccine causes “permanent damage in children’s critical organs.” Researchers looking for information about abortion, the 2020 election, the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, climate change or Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on TikTok found similarly misleading videos scattered among more accurate clips. The amount of misinformation — and the ease with which it can be found — is especially troubling given TikTok’s popularity with young people, according to Steven Brill, founder of NewsGuard, a firm that monitors misinformation. Pham Tuan Anh, Deputy Director General of the Industry Agency, Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT), attributed the technological inferiority to domestic firms’ limited resources and an inadequate labour force. He said the manufacturing sector has been developing asymmetrically with an over-dependence on FDI firms. The economic over-representation of the firms can be observed visibly in the heavy industrial subsector. The sector’s reliance on imported materials compounds the situation, resulting in low value-added domestic products. Industrial transition over the past few years, undoubtedly, has been fueled largely by FDI firms rather than domestic ones. The official called for favourable policies to keep firms well-informed about advanced technologies and facilitate the emergence of big firms, which act as a catalyst for an industrial leap forward. He also said not only should the manufacturing sector be heavily invested but so should supporting industries, which supply the former with fuels, components and materials. Nguyen Huu Tu, member of the Vietnam Chemical Corporation’s Board of Directors, revealed that the chemical industry is up to domestic demand in terms of basic products, but it is not the case for high-tech ones. He took technical rubber as an example, which domestic firms have a limited capability for mass-production. Imported rubber, accordingly, have to come in to fill the demand gap. Tu called for Governmental Decision 726 to be implemented to accelerate the growth of the chemical industry. He also suggested a revision to tax policies to level the playing field for both domestic and imported fertilisers. Lastly, he called for favourable policies on land rental in industrial parks and preferential loans for chemical producers to improve their competitive positions. Dinh Quoc Thai, Secretary General of the Vietnam Steel Association, revealed that the steel industry produces up to 30 million tonnes of steel per year. However, 90% of the steel caters for building works, whereas just 10% goes to other industries. The disproportion can be attributed to the fact that some industries cannot find certain types of domestically-made high-quality steel. They have to rely on imported steel to feed their production. The secretary general urged MoIT to draw up the Strategy for the Development of the Steel Industry until 2030 with a vision to 2050, which is expected to nurture the sustainable growth of domestic steel. Request for car registration fee cut extension turned down The Ministry of Finance (MOF) has rejected a request to extend the 50% registration fee reduction for domestically manufactured and assembled automobiles until December 31, 2022. On November 26 last year, the Government issued Decree 103/2021/ND-CP halving the registration fee for locally assembled and made automobiles, with effect until May 31, 2022. The fee cut came after the fourth wave of Covid-19 inflections had inflicted heavy damage on almost all sectors of the economy, including the automotive industry. Just one month after the decree came out, December auto sales in the country soared 21% against the previous month at 46,759 units, according to data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA). Auto sales growth continued into the first five months of this year, reaching 176,681 units, up 39% year on year. This means that during the six months of Decree 103 being in force, 223,440 autos benefited from the lower fee. Regarding the proposal for a fee cut extension until the end of this year, the MOF said the fee reduction, if extended, would not be in line with the National Treatment Rules in the framework of the World Trade Organization, and with the free trade agreements (FTA) to which Vietnam is a signatory. Vietnam would be required to give an explanation by the member countries of the trade deals which do not have their companies making and assembling autos in the nation. HCMC steps up extensive publicity program to woo tourists   Tourism agencies and district authorities in HCMC are launching multiple publicity programs to renew the city’s images to visitors with an aim to revive the hospitality industry post pandemic. Districts across the city have been participating in the tourism promotion program titled Welcome to HCMC, each with its own peculiar attraction. After a field trip to Go Vap District with the HCMC Department of Tourism, Phan Thi Thang, vice chairwoman of the HCMC government, noted the initiative in the district to woo tourists. Go Vap has announced its program “Go Vap – Looking for Age-old Vestiges.” The vice chairwoman, however, said that districts have good potential to develop tourism, and what is needed is to find the right solutions to tap the potential. Half of the districts have painstakingly created their own tourism programs with specific attractions, so the remaining districts should draw experiences to introduce other tourism products, she said. Spiking coal price creates mixed sentiment The rising coal price is causing multiple hardships to a host of diverse sectors yet bringing advantages to several others. Globally, the price of coke (used in steel production) in Australia, after a decline for nearly two months and falling to a one-year bottom of $190 per tonne in the first week of August, reached $270 per tonne on September 6, a more than 40 per cent jump, nearly approaching its historic peak of $275 per tonne on February 28. According to CoalMint, a coal price reporting agency, the price is forecast to touch $300-330 per tonne. For heat coal (used in power and fertiliser production), its price on September 6 set a new record of $457 per tonne. According to US Energy Information Administration, a gas shortage in Europe has bolstered demand for coal-fired thermo-power and pushed up coal prices. In Vietnam, according to SSI Research, the price of mixed coal from the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) rose 30-35 per cent in the first half and will rise further amid soaring coal prices in the global market. As coal is the key input material of many major production sectors, its skyrocketing price has badly affected many firms’ operations, particularly coal-fired power units. The agency’s infamous ‘Say Goodbye to Thai Mosquitos’ mockumentary style spot for Soffell resonated with consumers around the globe, despite its distinctly Thai sense of humour.   LBB catches up with Kavin Viasuwan, the creative director behind the Soffell ‘Say Goodbye to Thai Mosquitos’ and many other eccentric advertising spots, to find out where he gets his inspiration from, how he ensures the creative hits all the rights notes and the projects he is most proud of. LBB Tell us a bit about your professional journey so far; what was your start in the industry?  Kavin To be honest, I did not know anything about the advertising field before Yell. For many years, my career path was a little bit of a rollercoaster ride; I kept changing my mind and exploring what I really wanted to do. I started off as a graphic designer at a magazine, then I had a chance to study in Melbourne, for a year and a half. After I came back, I wanted to challenge myself by pursuing a role I had never worked in before: stationery design. This was quite interesting to me at the time but after a few years, I decided to quit and become a freelance graphic designer. Suddenly, one day, I got a phone call from my best friend asking me if I would like to try working in the advertising agency which was my first introduction to Yell. At first I doubted myself and was unsure about venturing down a career path I did not know anything about, but I was also excited about the opportunity. I went for it and got the job as art director, where I finally found the unexpected dream job. I am energised by the challenges and opportunities I face in this position at Yell.  LBB What sort of projects are you most drawn to?  Kavin I have been involved in many really enjoyable projects since I joined Yell, but if I had to pick, there are 3 projects that come to mind. These are the Soffell Mosquito Repellent, CP Bologna Metaverse and iQiyi campaigns; they top the list of best projects.  LBB When working on a new campaign, how do you ensure your vision for a film aligns with a brand’s identity?  Kavin To answer this question I would like to portray how I see the objective of the projects. For me, insight is a “question”, idea is an “answer”, and brand identity is “how you say it”. So when you have an interesting question, you must answer it wisely and creatively. To align with a brand’s identity, you must shape ideas to fit the brand’s tone of voice, making the idea stronger and more credible.  LBB How do you immerse yourself in a creative project? Kavin When it comes to the brainstorm session, every idea counts. In order to immerse ourselves in a new project, I try to create an atmosphere that encourages everyone to speak out about their ideas, no matter what they are. It’s like sitting and talking to friends about anything then a crazy great idea just pops up. LBB How does the Thai advertising world differ from other global markets? How do you make sure Yell’s work stands out from the rest?  Kavin Thai advertising has its own uniqueness that people from all around the world recognise. It is extremely dramatic, whether it is humorous or dramatic, and is capable of touching the hearts of global audiences. Thai advertising is different from all other advertising. However, to ensure we stand out, Yell always finds a twist, turning the insights and ideas around before everything concludes. We find the right path to communicate the idea effectively to the consumers. Moreover, we are flexible and work well as a team – there are no boundaries, we throw everything at an idea.  LBB The Soffell ‘Say Goodbye to Thai Mosquitos’ advert has been exceptionally well received. Why do you think the campaign has been so successful?  Kavin We approached the brief creatively and correctly, blending strong insights with the right ideas. The film is so easy to watch and understand, it helps the idea standout automatically.  LBB Where did the idea of incorporating the first-hand narrative of a human sized mosquito come from? Kavin From the insight that Thai people in every region really believe in mosquitoes being cruel and products like Soffell being incapable of scaring them away. We decided to make the mosquito human-size to emphasise the idea that they can be destroyed by Soffell. LBB What are you most proud of about the Soffell campaign? Kavin I am proud of the team; it is not just me and my team, but the planning and client services teams who believed in our idea and what we wanted to communicate. Imagine walking into the client’s meeting room and saying, “I want to make a film about life-sized mosquitoes” – not every client would be on board, but this client was. As a result, we were able to create one of the funniest advertising films in Thailand, which answers the objective in a creative way. LBB Are you working on any exciting projects that you can tell me a bit about?  Kavin There are 2 more that I mentioned earlier; CP Bologna Mew-taverse and iQiyi. First, CP Bologna came to us for a campaign to promote the products “Bologna Spicy ” through the brand’s presenter fan-meeting. During the COVID period, it was quite difficult to hold such an event for the fans. Metaverse had become very famous at the time, however, there were very few brands who had adopted the technology effectively. We thought Metaverse was to use not to just show off talking about it, so we chose to use the Metaverse for the fan-meeting. We created spaces to party in the Metaverse and held a concert featuring the brand’s presenter. Eventually, the Mew-Taverse went viral. The tickets sold out in just 2 hours and there were more than a thousand fans participating – they were so thrilled with the experience. Secondly, we worked with iQiyi, the streaming platform from China, who had struggled with the Thai market because Thais could not pronounce the brand name. To fix that problem, we created a catchy jingle that replicated the iconic song of Thailand, changing all the lyrics. The melody is so catchy, and the lyrics are easy “Ai Qi Yi, Ai Qi Yi, Ai Qi Yi”, so it automatically stuck in consumers’ minds. The song has become famous, with more than 7 million views on YouTube, with increased mentions of 1,248% which was an incredible success for the brand. Archaeologist Octavio del Rio said he and fellow diver Peter Broger saw the shattered skull and skeleton partly covered by sediment in a cave near where the Mexican government plans to build a high-speed tourist train through the jungle. Given the distance from the cave entrance, the skeleton couldn’t have gotten there without modern diving equipment, so it must be over 8,000 years old, Del Rio said, referring to the era when rising sea levels flooded the caves.“There it is. We don’t know if the body was deposited there or if that was where this person died,” said Del Rio. He said that the skeleton was located about 8 meters (26 feet) underwater, about a half-kilometer (one third of a mile) into the cave system. Some of the oldest human remains in North America have been discovered in the sinkhole caves known as “cenotes” on the country’s Caribbean coast, and experts say some of those caves are threatened by the Mexican government’s Maya Train tourism project. Del Rio, who has worked with the National Institute of Anthropology and History on projects in the past, said he had notified the institute of the discovery. The institute did not immediately respond to questions about whether it intended to explore the site. But Del Rio said Tuesday that institute archaeologist Carmen Rojas told him that the site was registered and would be investigated by the institute’s Quintana Roo state branch Holocene Archaeology Project. He stressed that the cave — whose location he did not reveal because of a fear the site could be looted or disturbed — was near where the government has cut down a swath of jungle to lay train tracks, and could be collapsed, contaminated or closed off by the building project and subsequent development. “There is a lot more study that has to be done in order to correctly interpret” the find, Del Rio said, noting that “dating, some kind of photographic studies and some collection” would be needed to determine exactly how old the skeleton is. Del Rio has been exploring the region for three decades, and in 2002, he participated in the discovery and cataloguing of remains known as The Woman of Naharon, who died around the same time, or perhaps earlier, than Naia — the nearly complete skeleton of a young woman who died around 13,000 years ago. They say his haste will allow little time to study the ancient remains. Activists say the heavy, high-speed rail project will fragment the coastal jungle and will run often above the fragile limestone caves, which — because they’re flooded, twisty and often incredibly narrow — can take decades to explore. Caves along part of the coast already have been damaged by construction above them, with cement pilings used to support the weight above. The 950-mile (1,500-kilometer) Maya Train line is meant to run in a rough loop around the Yucatan Peninsula, connecting beach resorts and archaeological sites. The most controversial stretch cuts a more than 68-mile (110-kilometer) swath through the jungle between the resorts of Cancun and Tulum. Del Rio said the route through the jungle should be abandoned and the train should be built over the already-impacted coastal highway between Cancun and Tulum, as was originally planned.López Obrador abandoned the highway route after hotel owners voiced objections, and cost and traffic interruptions became a concern.“What we want is for them to change to route at this spot, because of the archaeological finds that have been made there, and their importance,” said Del Rio. “They should take the train away from there and put it where they said they were going to build before, on the highway … an area that has already been affected, devastated.”
