Opinion | Putin Wanted To Terrorize Us With Kyiv Airstrikes. It Didn’t Work. – The Washington Post https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/opinion-putin-wanted-to-terrorize-us-with-kyiv-airstrikes-it-didnt-work-the-washington-post/ Iuliia Mendel is a journalist, the author of “The Fight of Our Lives,” and a former press secretary for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. It all started around 8 a.m. on Monday. My husband and I were going about our usual morning routine. I was making an omelet and coffee when we heard the first explosions. We rushed to the window, not able to believe this was happening again (even though the air-raid sirens had already been wailing for an hour and a half). When we opened the window, we heard rolling thunder, even though the sky in Kyiv was completely clear. The sound of exploding missiles always reminds me of the sounds of a storm, but it is far more menacing knowing that death is coming, not rain. I searched online to figure out what had happened, and whether my relatives and friends were okay. We realized we had to get dressed quickly and prepare to go to the shelter. Soon, there were more explosions. Only the cats remained calm. I ate the omelet quickly, despite my sour stomach. I got a call from my cousin Oleksandra Mendel, who is 24. She left her home in Kherson village back when the Russians came and, since then, she’s been living with my grandmother in downtown Kyiv. She told me that she’d been heading home from the train station in a cab when she heard the whistling of a missile. It hit about a block away with a tremendous explosion — and was soon followed by a second one. The driver stopped and they both jumped out, joining the frantic crowd of people on the street looking for a place to hide. “I couldn’t tell where the missile had hit,” she told me. “We didn’t know if the attack was over, if there would be other missiles.” In the end, she and her taxi driver got back in the car and drove away. She spent the next three hours in a bomb shelter. Despite the Kremlin’s efforts to terrorize our people, their reaction has been extraordinary. The citizens of Kyiv are scared, it’s true. You can’t not be scared. But at the same time, they haven’t given into hysteria. The German ambassador to Ukraine, who spent hours in bomb shelters on Monday, too, tweeted: “With hundreds of Kyivans in a shelter. I am amazed at the calm that prevails here while Russia is shelling playgrounds in the center of Kyiv.” Monday’s attacks gave some of us flashbacks to when the war started back in February. But this time, the situation feels very different. While we can’t get used to the fact that someone is trying to kill us just because of who we are — no one could ever get used to that — now we know we can fight back. We understand that our enemy is doing this because he is desperate. People are determined to go about their lives. When the invasion began, everything shut down. But today, many of the shops have stayed open. Grocery stores, coffee shops, even a beauty salon in my building — they all kept working. The city of Kyiv and the surrounding regions had blackouts on Monday, some for a few hours, others longer. Later in the day, when it seemed that the attacks were over, I visited a maternity hospital outside of town. My friend Maryna gave birth to a daughter there three days ago, and she is still there recovering. She was worried but still in a state of absolute happiness. She moved to the European Union when the war started but decided to come back to Ukraine to have her baby. Monday morning, she didn’t hear the explosions. When the doctors invited her to go downstairs to the bomb shelter, she declined. The elevators weren’t working because of the lack of power, and she didn’t have the energy to make the trek. So she and her baby girl just stayed in their room, hoping that everything would be all right. (The mayor of Kyiv said that at least five health-care buildings were damaged during Monday’s missile strikes.) Earlier in the day, I ran into two people who decided get out of Kyiv because of the attack. One person was talking on the phone near the entrance to my building; I heard him say “it’s time to leave.” Someone had piled up a bunch of luggage in the entryway. I got into the elevator with a neighbor, who said he was very angry and wanted to blow up the Kremlin. He told me that he and his family were leaving for the countryside for a few days, believing there would be more attacks soon. “The Russians are shelling residential buildings,” he said. “It’s terror!” He was right. The mood among civilians is that they want to put a stop to this terror — and the only way to do that is by stopping the war. Everything we have is under attack. Our loved ones have been killed, wounded and terrorized. Parts of our country have been occupied, subjected to lawlessness and state-orchestrated violence. Our very existence has been doubted and attacked. So people have good reason to be angry. They want all of this to stop. They are under incredible stress. But they are not hopeless or desperate. “We have to be patient,” is how my cousin Oleksandra put it to me. “This is [Vladimir] Putin’s final death agony and we are about to win. This is happening because we have successes on the battlefield, so we must be patient and believe in our army.” This morning, when the missile hit, she was returning from the southern front line on a train. Her husband serves in the military there. This is the atmosphere in Kyiv. People are angry, and they’re not going to give up.

Corsair K70 RGB PRO Mechanical Gaming Keyboard Review (Kosta’s Take) – TweakTown https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/corsair-k70-rgb-pro-mechanical-gaming-keyboard-review-kostas-take-tweaktown/ TweakTown’s Rating: 98% The Bottom Line As far as wired keyboards go, the Corsair K70 RGB PRO Mechanical Gaming Keyboard ticks all of the right boxes, while delivering impressive low latency performance. Pros + Robust build with comfy wrist rest and an aluminum top plate + Linear Cherry MX switches and double-shot keycaps perform wonderfully + The best dedicated-media-buttons you’ll find on a keyboard + iCUE software support + Easy to setup shortcuts and switch between profiles Cons – Takes up a bit of desk space – Xbox Series X|S compatibility is great, but the USB cable needs to be longer Should you buy it? AvoidConsiderShortlistBuy Introduction & Specification Details and Close-up Polling Rate when it comes to a keyboard or mouse is an important measure to factor into a review because it relates to the rate at which data is sent from the peripheral to the computer. The faster the Polling Rate, the less time it takes for things like key presses and mouse movements to be registered and acted upon. For gaming, that of course, means the higher the Polling Rate, the better – and even though other factors play into latency (mechanical keyboards have their internal key-scanning), the general standard across gaming peripherals designed for performance is a Polling Rate of 1000 Hz. The Corsair K70 RGB PRO Mechanical Gaming Keyboard, with its Corsair-developed AXON technology, pushes this to 8000 Hz – an increase of 8 times. Is it overkill? Perhaps, but it’s also very impressive. 19 VIEW GALLERY – 19 IMAGES Even though the overall aesthetic and physical design of the Corsair K70 RGB PRO Mechanical Gaming Keyboard errs on the side of minimal, it’s a wired mechanical keyboard that aims to tick all potential boxes you might have concerning in-game performance, customization features, and productivity. We’re talking dedicated shortcut buttons covering everything from profile switching to changing the overall RGB brightness on-the-fly and even muting all audio. High-quality dedicated media controls and a form factor that is larger than most floating key style keyboards make room for all of this. And Corsair has packed in a comfy wrist rest to boot. The Corsair K70 RGB PRO Mechanical Gaming is certainly up there in terms of impressive wired mechanical keyboards we’ve tested, and its performance and features are in-line with the sheer amount of desk space it takes up. Especially when you, say, compare it to the Corsair K70 RGB PRO MINI WIRELESS, which features the same Cherry MX Red linear switches and great feeling double-shot PBT keycaps. This is something for those that want it all. Design & Software Design With the detachable wrist rest connected, which does feature a soft and comfortable finish, the Corsair K70 RGB PRO Mechanical Gaming Keyboard takes up quite a bit of desk space. A size born from the specific physical design features Corsair has opted to implement, but with the overall weight sitting at 1.15kg this is something that won’t move unless you want it to. With the bottom part of the physical build being hard plastic, the Corsair K70 RGB PRO features a brushed aluminum top plate that sits between the base and the keys. Couple this with the great feel of the double-shot PBT keycaps, this is a keyboard that is premium through and through. This is of course reflected in the price point, which is currently sitting at USD 159.99 and AUD 219 – the latter being a decent discount and deal for Aussies. The premium feel can be seen immediately when looking at the dedicated media controls, something that a lot of people look for when it comes to a new keyboard. Here you’ve got the usual play/pause, stop, previous, and next buttons, but these are of a grade you rarely see. The sort of buttons you’d find on a high-end controller or even DVD player from back in the day. On top of that, you’ve got a high-quality and large volume dial on the top right of the keyboard, with an added mute button. Impressive stuff. 19 As far as the mechanical switches go, the Corsair K70 RGB PRO Mechanical Gaming Keyboard tested here featured linear Cherry MX Red switches – with Corsair offering a variety of options to choose from. So, if you want a clicky sound (and tactile response) to match the imposing stature of this keyboard, you’ve got the option. With Cherry MX Red delivering smooth performance (45g actuation force, a 2mm actuation point, and 4mm of total travel), it’s the best of both worlds situation in that most find the linear style best for gaming and even productivity. Corsair also rates them at 100 million keystrokes, so there’s that peace of mind they’ll last a while. The full size of the keyboard also adds to the ergonomics and comfort that comes from simply typing or using WASD to dance around an enemy, with Corsair offering three levels of adjustable height. The stands come out horizontally versus vertically too, which removes the chance of them moving if the keyboard itself moves forward. There’s also a tournament switch on the back that disables all high-end features, advanced RGB, and iCUE integration for those that want to go pure game mode. Software As with all Corsair hardware, all customization for the Corsair K70 RGB PRO Mechanical Gaming Keyboard is handled with the company’s iCUE software. Which, although chunky in its 1GB+ install size and half-of that in memory when in use, is easily one of the most detailed, in-depth, and customizable software suites available today. It’s here where you can choose to drill down into per-key RGB lighting effects or opt for the impressive Scenes lighting, which ranges from funky Corsair yellow (as seen in the hardware pictures) through to rainbow effects and even an option that lets your keyboard change color in-line with CPU temperatures. This means if you see it go red, it’s probably time to back away slowly. 19 It’s in iCUE where you can create all manner of key assignments and shortcuts and macros, and the interface in which you do so is intuitive once you get over that initial learning hump. However, profile saving is kind of hidden in the device preferences window. Most of it is a matter of simple point-and-click. Let’s say you want to have the FN key plus the T key open a Text Editor, simply select Launch App from the key assignment types, select the two keys on the on-screen version of the keyboard (or press them), and the results are saved and immediate. 19 Finally, although not iCUE related, the Corsair K70 RGB PRO Mechanical Gaming Keyboard is also compatible with the Xbox Series X and S consoles – which is great to see. The supplied USC cable might not be long enough to span the distance between console and couch for some, but with more and more Xbox titles supporting keyboard and mouse input – having that support is a nice little bonus. Gaming Performance and Productivity Gaming Performance Okay, so it’s hard to gauge exactly what difference the increased 8000 Hz brings to the table. And that’s because 1000 Hz already equates to an unnoticeable 1ms of latency versus 8000 Hz’s 0.25ms. It’s an impressive feature to have, and no matter the setting, the Corsair K70 RGB PRO Mechanical Gaming Keyboard excels when paired with fast-paced titles like Apex Legends, DOOM Eternal, and Ghostrunner. The spacebar is sturdy and has a great bounciness, and the linear Cherry MX switches are something that you can get used to in no time. No matter the title tested, performance was flawless, and with the premium build and comfort that comes from the added wrist rest and the double-shot PBT keycaps – Corsair has delivered and then some. 19 One area where there probably could be some improvement might be with game-specific customization and even lighting settings in iCUE to make profile setup and switching more seamless. Other companies allow profiles to be tied to applications a lot easier than how that’s handled here. Productivity As great as the Corsair K70 RGB PRO Mechanical Gaming Keyboard is for gaming, it’s just as impressive when viewed purely as a productivity keyboard. The physical design might be large, but the minimal aesthetics blend well with most traditional setups, and the ergonomics are great when you attach the wrist rest. The linear Cherry MX Red switches in the model we tested proved to be great for typing too, and the Corsair K70 RGB PRO’s keycaps have a comfy feel no matter the application. Throw in the high-quality dedicated media controls, which you’re more likely to use when simply browsing, in Discord, or listening to music, and the productivity chops...

The Festive Story Behind National Lampoons Christmas Vacation Looper
The Festive Story Behind National Lampoons Christmas Vacation Looper
The Festive Story Behind National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation – Looper https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/the-festive-story-behind-national-lampoons-christmas-vacation-looper/ × Cookies help us deliver our Services. By using our Services, you agree to our use of cookies. Learn More. Warner Bros. Out of the thousands of Christmas movies produced, only a handful have become so beloved that an annual viewing becomes part of the winter holiday traditions people celebrate every year. Of those few movies, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” is probably the funniest and the most realistic depiction of the modern Christmas holiday season. Chevy Chase reprises his role as ultra-dad Clark Griswold from two travel-centric “Vacation” films. This time, he’s dead-set on and obsessed with the idea of staging the perfect family Christmas for his wife, Ellen, kids Audrey and Rusty, and their various, perpetually unimpressed in-laws and cousins. “Christmas Vacation” pokes holes in the fantasy of that special time of cheer, where it’s not always so full of cheer as it is stress, turmoil, tension, and destruction. “Christmas Vacation” is so funny and so popular because it’s just so relatable. “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” is a modern movie classic and an iconic screen comedy, but making the film was as long and difficult of a journey as the Christmas season is for Clark Griswold. So put on that Santa hat, string up 25,000 twinkle lights, grab a moose-shaped cup of eggnog, and unwrap the festive story behind “Christmas Vacation.” Why Christmas Vacation is a National Lampoon movie Warner Bros. “National Lampoon’s Vacation” was such a massive hit upon its release in 1983 — it out-earned “Superman III” — that Warner Bros. quickly and logically ordered a sequel, and “National Lampoon’s European Vacation” arrived in 1985. That was a strictly made-for-the-movies story, as opposed to the original “Vacation” and 1989’s “National Lampoon’ Christmas Vacation,” which were both based on short, fictional, very lightly autobiographical, comedic stories authored by screenwriter John Hughes and published in the titular National Lampoon humor magazine many years prior.  A story titled “Vacation ’58,” concerning a hilariously nightmarish road trip, ran in the publication in 1979, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A year later, per BrainstemBob, the Lampoon printed a holiday-themed sequel, “Christmas ’59.” It was the magazine’s publisher, Matty Simmons, who convinced Warner Bros. to not only make a third “Vacation,” but a Christmas-themed one based on Hughes’ sequel story, according to Rolling Stone. It took a while for Christmas Vacation to find a director Et Canada/Getty Images John Hughes was the producer, screenwriter, and author of the source material for “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” but he wasn’t interested in directing as he’d done with many of his other ’80s-era scripts. In 1988, he sent the screenplay and an offer to direct to filmmaker Chris Columbus, with whom he shared an agent, according to “John Hughes: A Life in FIlm.” Columbus was thrilled to take the job since he thought the script was funny, and he enjoyed Christmas movies. But after a couple of pre-production meetings with star Chevy Chase, Columbus realized that their personalities clashed. “It was fraught with pain and tension with Chevy Chase, but I needed the job desperately,” Columbus told Insider. “So it took everything in my power to convince myself to resign from ‘Christmas Vacation’ because I couldn’t make the movie with Chevy Chase.” Two weeks later, Hughes offered Columbus a directing gig on another Christmas movie, which he accepted: “Home Alone.”  As for “Christmas Vacation,” the director job eventually went to Jeremiah Chechik, marking his first feature film after working in commercials and music videos. According to The Flashback Files, Chechik landed the deal at Warner Bros. following a recommendation from legendary filmmaker, Stanley Kubrick, who said he liked Chechik’s beer commercials.  Christmas Vacation, not starring Leonardo DiCaprio or Christie Brinkley Getty Images/Getty, Warner Bros. Each of the four initial “National Lampoon’s Vacation” movies were filmed so far apart that filmmakers had to cast different teenage actors virtually every time they needed a Rusty and Audrey Griswold. Johnny Galecki inherited the role from Jason Lively and Anthony Michael Hall, but he wasn’t necessarily the filmmakers’ first choice for the role of the Griswolds’ younger child. A just-starting-out Leonardo DiCaprio auditioned to play Rusty. “I remember very vividly feeling that this kid was really special,” casting director Heidi Levitt told the American Film Institute. “He just immediately captivated you, but he wasn’t, like, goofy enough. He was very thoughtful.” Another big casting could’ve been Christie Brinkley. The iconic 1980s supermodel made her film debut in the original “National Lampoon’s Vacation” in 1983 as “The Girl in the Ferrari.” She plays Clark Griswold’s dream woman that he keeps crossing paths with on the road trip. She passed on a role offered in “Christmas Vacation” upon the advice of her father. “He said, ‘Gee, I would hate to see you get typecast in that kind of ingenue role. You have so much more depth. I don’t think you should do it,'” Brinkley told Us Weekly of her decision, which she came to regret. “Of course, I should’ve because it’s so much fun to hang around with comedians.” Not much of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation was improvised Warner Bros. According to “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” director Jeremiah Chechik, John Hughes’ screenplay didn’t require a lot of on-set embellishment. “Very little” of the movie was improvised, he told The Flashback Files, adding that cue cards were strategically placed to help Chase nail his ranting monologue of insults directed toward his boss. Beverly D’Angelo (Ellen Griswold) told The Dinner Party Download that the scene was set up so that Chase could riff on the scripted material. “It was blocked in a way that would allow each of us to have around our necks a piece of rope that was attached to a big cue card,” D’Angelo said. “So we didn’t have the lines in order exactly.” Later in that same scene, when police break into the Griswold home in search of Clark’s kidnapped boss, everybody freezes and Ellen places her hand on her husband’s crotch. “I did that spur of the moment and told Chevy, just to see if anyone on set noticed,” D’Angelo told Rolling Stone. “No one mentioned it.” Some of the other brief, notably funny bits in “Christmas Vacation” were conceived by the actors. Diane Ladd, as Clark’s mother, did her “knock knock, who’s there” bit at her audition and it was added to the movie. And Randy Quaid, who plays Cousin Eddie, improvised the part when he carelessly drops a giant bag of dog food onto a box of light bulbs while in Walmart with Clark.  Chevy Chase was injured while filming a pivotal scene Warner Bros. In one of the most famous scenes in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) thinks he’s finally got his home’s power grid-draining Christmas lights and decorations up and running, only for a snafu over plugs and switches to make him think he’s failed. This sends him into a comically vicious tailspin, kicking over and punching various plastic lawn decorations.  The retaliation on the Christmas lights fiasco wasn’t planned. In the midst of the chaos, Chase kicked and smacked his hand on the decorations. “That wasn’t in the script, but I was so angry I did it,” Chase told the Asbury Park Press. He connected with such force that he broke his pinky finger. “I thought it might melt or something, but no, it was a good, hard plastic.” According to Whosay, the take used in the final cut of the film, in which Clark punches a Santa Claus ornament, is the one on which he broke his finger. And then he kept on filming the scene, never breaking character. “I had to keep kicking. Because it hurt so much,” he said. The squirrel sequence was tough to film Warner Bros. In a movie full of wild and zany sequences, the wildest and zaniest part in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” might be when a squirrel shows up in the Griswolds’ outdoor-cut Christmas tree and runs all over the place, terrifying humans, agitating Cousin Eddie’s giant dog, and leading to lots of messes and property damage. Filming that scene was almost as chaotic as the scene itself. As “Christmas Vacation” was produced in the late 1980s, CGI technology wasn’t yet readily available, so filmmakers had to film the scene John Hughes wrote with a real, albeit trained, squirrel. According to The Ultimate Rabbit, director Jeremiah Chechik and his crew intensely planned out and storyboarded the squirrel scene several days in advance. Meanwhile, the movie’s animal trainer worked with the squirrel to teach the animal its cues. But on the day the scene was supposed to shoot, Chechik learned that the squirrel had died overnight. On a tight schedule, they still had to film the scene that day and brought in a brand-new, totally unprepared squirrel performer who was lured into hitting its marks with treats. Chechik improvised the blocking and filming to make the scene happen. Filmmakers had to work hard to keep the electrocution scene Warner Bros. John Hughes wrote the screenplay for “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” and served as a producer. He also used his significant clout in Hollywood, and within the Warner Bros. studio, to preserve material that he wrote and director Jeremiah Chechik shot that executives were insistent on deleting from the final cut of the movie. The most shocking scene in “Christmas Vacation,” literally, is when the pet cat that senile Aunt Bethany brings as a gift to the Griswold home chews on a tree light wire and violently, graphically, electrocutes itself to death. “The studio was really against electrifying the cat,” C...

Exxon Mobil In Talks To Buy Oil & Gas Producer Denbury -Bloomberg News – Reuters https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/exxon-mobil-in-talks-to-buy-oil-gas-producer-denbury-bloomberg-news-reuters/ Oct 10 (Reuters) – Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N) is considering a takeover of oil and gas producer Denbury Inc (DEN.N) and the talks are at a preliminary stage, Bloomberg News reported on Monday, citing people familiar with the matter. Shares of Plano, Texas-based energy company Denbury jumped as much as 12% earlier on Monday, before paring some gains to close up about 7%, giving it a market value of about $5 billion. Denbury is expected to be fetch a significant premium if it proceeds with the sale, making it a potentially sizable transaction. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Denbury has been exploring options and is working with an advisor on a potential sale, sources familiar with the matter have previously told Reuters. Other potential buyers could include oil majors such as Chevron Corp (CVX.N), the sources said. The company specializes in using carbon dioxide to extract oil from old wells and thus is seen as an attractive asset for oil majors and other large-cap energy companies that are starting to make bigger bets on the environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) strategy. Denbury emerged from bankruptcy in 2020 and its stock has performed strongly since then, thus providing an exit opportunity for its creditors who became shareholders in the company. Denbury’s pipelines and storage potential on the Gulf Coast are also seen as attractive features for potential buyers. Exxon declined to comment and Denbury did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment. Laredo Health Department To Receive $125K To Monitor Health Factors – Laredo Morning Times https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/laredo-health-department-to-receive-125k-to-monitor-health-factors-laredo-morning-times/ Rep. Henry Cuellar will hold a press conference Tuesday to officially announce $125,000 in federal funding for the Laredo Health Department in its focus on social determinants of health in the community. A media advisory states that the health department will use the funds to develop a plan for the city to address social determinants of health. This will include a focus on disease prevention, education, disease management and social connectedness. Laredo has been deemed medically underserved for decades and with the pandemic highlighting the issues, some steps have been taken to address the situation. Earlier this year, the city hired a consulting service to help find solutions to the health care needs of the community. Some issues including the difficulty of retaining health staff and the high number of uninsured residents in the community. The funding to the health department using federal fund may help develop a stronger response by the city in the immediate and distant future. The release added that the goal is for the Laredo Health Department to reinforce existing cross-sector partnerships to improve mental and physical health outcomes for individuals in Webb County and Laredo, Texas. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, mental and physical health are equally important components of overall health. They state that mental illnesses are among the most common health conditions in the United States with over 50% of U.S. residents expected to be diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at one point in their lifetime. Furthermore, 1 in 25 U.S. residents live with a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or major depression. An example given is the effect of stress on both the mind and the body that may increase health risks. “For example, depression increases the risk for many types of physical health problems, particularly long-lasting conditions like diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Similarly, the presence of chronic conditions can increase the risk for mental illness,” the CDC states. To help residents, the city health department has its Good Life-Buena Vida Program, that focuses on early detection of chronic disease such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and other chronic diseases to help prevent future complications and live a healthier life. This is compounded by the department’s Healthy Living-Viviendo Mejor Program that helps resident learn more about diseases and self-management. The program provides free access to certified evidence-based curriculum developed by the University of Illinois at Chicago known as the Diabetes Empowerment Education Program. Topics discussed include: Understanding the Human Body. Understanding Diabetes and its Risk Factors. Monitoring your Body. Health Management through Meal Planning. Diabetes and Physical Activity. Diabetes Complications, Identification and Prevention. Learning about Medications and Medical Care. Living with Diabetes by Mobilizing Family and Friends. At the county, in 2021, a Webb County clinic was opened for employees and their dependents that would be an affordable option to circumvent costly visits to hospitals and clinics for minor issues. Beyond that, county employees had a dedicated and accessible COVID testing site, physicals, flu shots, a diabetes check and more for free. The services have no out-of-pocket expense for any employee or their families.

Travis Gienger, of Anoka, Minnesota set the new record and won an annual pumpkin-weighing contest in Northern California. Gienger drove the gargantuan gourd for 35 hours to see his hard work pay off at the 49th World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, south of San Francisco. Gienger, who also won the same contest in Northern California in 2020, broke a record set last week in New York where a grower raised a massive pumpkin weighing 2,554 pounds. NBCUs Shopping Push Takes Bravo To Metaverse And Beyond Yahoo Life
NBCUs Shopping Push Takes Bravo To Metaverse And Beyond Yahoo Life
NBCU’s Shopping Push Takes Bravo To Metaverse And Beyond – Yahoo Life https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/nbcus-shopping-push-takes-bravo-to-metaverse-and-beyond-yahoo-life/ NBCUniversal’s “One Platform” shoppable TV initiative plans to take Bravo beyond mere commerce and television. On Monday, the company revealed that this week’s BravoCon 2022 in New York will traverse multiple consumer experiences in the real, digital and virtual worlds. This year’s Bravo Bazaar will offer fans of “Real Housewives,” “Top Chef,” “Below Deck” and other shows more than 60 brands at its on-site event, with transactions powered by NBCUniversal checkout, while others explore an “enhanced” metaverse version. Staged with recreations of sets from favorite shows and studded with shoppable products, the virtual event, which launched last year, will be four times larger this time. TRESemmé, a featured brand partner, will also sponsor a real-world salon with products that people can shop in-person and online. More from WWD Scenes from Decentraland’s Metaverse Fashion Week 2020 Holiday Gift Ideas: Google’s Top Searched Beauty, Home and Tech Gifts Inside the Jacquard by Google Exhibit in Paris “NBCUniversal has a keen pulse on the wants and needs of the Bravo fandom,” said Evan Moore, senior vice president of commerce partnerships at NBCUniversal Advertising & Partnerships division. “By embedding shoppable experiences within key moments where fans are living out the Bravo life — whether it’s at BravoCon, online across our properties, or in the metaverse with the enhanced Bravo Bazaar — we can drive genuine connection and impact for our partners that transcend the screen and the shows.” The list of Bravo-approved brands includes Lashaholics, Literie Candles and Verishop brands, plus others spurred by the network’s stars such as Sewing Down South, LoverBoy and CaraGala. Products and services span retail, beauty, apparel and home decor, among other categories. At TRESemmé’s BravoCon Salon, event attendees can “achieve Bravolebrity-styled hair,” according to Jessica Grigoriou, the hair care brand’s head of beauty marketing and Salon & Masstige portfolio director. The salon and shopping opportunity goes beyond the Con as well. “We’re excited to extend these shoppable experiences to Bravo fans around the world using QR code technology on-site within the salon and on-air utilizing a Live Look In on Bravo and a branded bar on ‘Watch What Happens Live,’” she explained. Altogether, according to NBCU, “Bravoholics” everywhere will be able to shop for their favorite looks and styles. It’s an ambitious move, but the company has plenty of reason to be optimistic. In previous research the company noted that consumers engaged with its Commercial Innovations were 88 percent more likely to remember relevant brands, and 79 percent were less likely to change channels. Shopping activations, specifically, showed twice the efficacy of traditional advertisements. The media giant, apparently emboldened by the numbers, seems to be doubling down on shopping and expanding it even beyond the initiative’s original premise. Introduced in 2019, the company’s shoppable TV initiative began with QR codes on TV screens to funnel viewers into its e-commerce storefront. Over time it added to its lineup of shows, sporting events and products, eventually turning its attention to the metaverse. Last year’s virtual Bravo Bazaar preceded other announcements — most recently, it introduced new augmented reality features for immersive ad experiences and partnerships with virtual platforms such as Shop the Scenes, which will launch a “Today” show holiday pop-up. NBCU is betting on its passionate TV fan base to power it all. Indeed, fan communities have become a major priority for commerce platforms in general, especially given their propensity to drive activity and shopping in the virtual world. However, the metaverse is only one facet of BravoCon. Indeed, the multiplatform effort blends broadcast TV with real world, online and immersive virtual experiences, comprising a strategy that’s akin to an amplified version of omnichannel retail. But instead of merely fusing physical and digital platforms, the quadruple play adds more literal dimensionality to the equation. The takeaway: While some platforms and brands may still struggle with omnichannel retail or mull over their place in the metaverse, there’s a multiverse of shopping that’s already underway. Column: Digging Up The Most Boring Time Capsule In History • Long Beach Post News – Long Beach Post https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/column-digging-up-the-most-boring-time-capsule-in-history-long-beach-post-news-long-beach-post/ Chief Engineer Patrick Brown uses a sledgehammer to break up the concrete which a 1972 time capsule was placed in Long Beach Monday, October 10, 2022. Photo by Thomas R. Cordova. The year 1972, like most years, wasn’t without interest. I know. I was there when it happened as a senior in high school. You had “The Godfather” premiere, you had Nixon trouncing McGovern, you had the arcade release of the Pong video game, you had Apollo 17, the last manned mission to the moon, you had the Munich Massacre at the Olympics and The Troubles in Northern Ireland. Not to mention all the outdated gadgets that are now long gone, many of which have been made obsolete by today’s iPhone, as opposed to a 50-year-old rotary phone that couldn’t even help you navigate traffic. The small crowd that attended a Monday afternoon opening of a time capsule buried at 100 Oceangate in Downtown in 1972 was largely filled with people who were alive 50 years ago when the capsule was buried in honor of the dedication of the Oceangate Tower and Plaza by the now-defunct Redevelopment Agency (RDA, as old-timers wistfully recall it). As time capsules go, this one was horribly disappointing unless you’re a collector—an inordinately avid collector— of real estate and Port of Long Beach ephemera, because most of the items in the box (almost-dug-up in advance before workers struggled with the rest of the digging up on Monday) were scraps of paper relating to the first of the buildings to be erected at the Oceangate complex and its plaza, along with a smattering of photos and pamphlets that probably weren’t very interesting a half century ago and they haven’t grown more compelling while sitting in a box for 50 years. The box featured a lot of things I have in my garage, souvenirs and miscellaneous trinkets. If I was better organized I might have thrown them out by now because they don’t exactly spark joy in me. Instead of interesting items that may have been puzzling and amusing to people under the age of, say, 30, the mystery box contained an awful lot of Port of Long Beach documents along with a press kit from Oceangate developer Boise-Cascade, the RDA plan for the area, initially called West Beach Development, a handful of grant deeds, a lot of photo books and souvenir programs from the Historical Society of Long Beach and long-gone beauty contests and a tie from the Port of Long Beach to be given to the current executive director, Mario Cordero, who just happened to be in the audience along with City Manager Tom Modica, 9th District Councilman Rex Richardson and emcee Amy Bodek, former director of Development Services as well as former director of the Redevelopment Agency. To say that the tie was the most interesting thing in the box does not mean it was an interesting tie. There was a lot of speechifying in advance of the box-opening, which was almost as exciting as the main event. The highlight for me was a brief conversation with Brett Bixby, whose forebears once owned most of the land in Long Beach. He attended and assisted with the burial of the box in 1972 when he was 4, along with his little brother Grant (also in attendance) who was 1 and his older brother, the late Mark Bixby, who was 6. He said he didn’t remember much about that day but that it seemed pretty cool. It’s funny how you sometimes remember things as having been cooler than they actually were. Crypto Receives Some Bad News From Friendly Portugal TheStreet
Crypto Receives Some Bad News From Friendly Portugal – TheStreet https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/crypto-receives-some-bad-news-from-friendly-portugal-thestreet/ The crypto industry is looking for good news much like the rest of the asset classes in these times of concern about the health of the economy.  For a long time, cryptocurrency evangelists have claimed that bitcoin (BTC), the largest digital currency, can be used to hedge against inflation, since you know exactly what the supply is.  But the current economic downturn has just erased that argument.  Indeed, soaring prices for goods and services have never been so high in 40 years but BTC fails to take advantage of it. Since January, BTC has lost 72.1% of its value compared to its all-time high of $69,044.77 set on Nov. 10, according to data firm CoinGecko.  BTC is currently trading around $19,250. The Talents Are Leaving Overall the crypto market has lost over $2 trillion since its November highs. Cryptocurrencies, which are the public face of the crypto industry that wants to disrupt the traditional financial services sector, are now increasingly considered risky assets in the same way as the shares of technology groups. Basically, when there are doubts about economic growth, investors liquidate those assets that are bets on the future. The craze around non-fungible tokens (NFTs), another side of the crypto industry, has also died down. The metaverse, the third element of the crypto trifecta, still fails to convince skeptics. This new situation has completely upset the sector in recent months. The liquidity crisis which has also affected crypto lenders, hedge funds and exchanges has also revealed that transparency is still far from a principle in crypto.  All these problems weigh heavily on the sector which has recently recorded serial bankruptcies – Celsius Network, Voyager Digital, Three Arrows Capital -.  Many firms have also laid off hundreds of employees and frozen hiring. Since then, we have also witnessed a change of guard with the departure of founders of firms such as Michael Saylor, who is no longer CEO of MicroStrategy  (MSTR) , or Jesse Powell who just handed over the reins at crypto exchange Kraken. The hemorrhage of talents continues.  Brian Roberts, CFO of OpenSea, the Amazon of NFTs, has just announced that he has stepped down. “Well it is time for me to come ashore from the ‘open seas’,” Roberts wrote in a post on LinkedIn on Oct. 7. “I remain incredibly bullish on web3 and especially OpenSea. The company is heads down building and I assure you, the best is yet to come.” Big Slap from Portugal Roberts, a former CFO of Lyft  (LYFT) , didn’t even last a year in his job. He had been appointed in December 2021. He does not give the reasons for this departure. In addition to talent departures, the industry is also in the crosshairs of regulators around the world.  The latest news is particularly bad.  Portugal, often seen as crypto-friendly, plans to start taxing gains from digital currencies purchased for less than a year. Basically, the country will tax the earnings made by anyone holding digital currencies for less than a year. The tax rate is 28% according to a proposal that is part of the 2023 budget. It was unveiled on Oct. 10.  Crypto assets held for more than a year will remain tax-free.  Until now, the Portuguese government did not tax crypto gains unless they were made by professionals and companies.  You can read the draft of this proposal here. It’s in Portuguese. The government also wants to create a 10% tax on crypto transfers and a 4% tax on commissions charged by brokers.  The proposals have yet to be approved, but it is a huge change that should thwart many industry players who were considering moving to the country for its pro-crypto politics. Indeed, in recent years, the country has welcomed crypto firms eager to take advantage of an absence of regulation. In addition, the country, which wants to attract investors, offers a special program, known as the non-habitual resident (NHR) tax regime. The NHR provides a flat 20% tax on foreign residents’ income and full tax exemptions after 10 years of residence.

Cyber Attack Knocks Some U.S. Airport Websites Offline – The Washington Post https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/cyber-attack-knocks-some-u-s-airport-websites-offline-the-washington-post/ Websites for a handful of U.S. airports, including those in Atlanta, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, were taken offline during a cyberattack Monday, although officials said there was no effect on flight operations. Managers at multiple airports said they notified the FBI and the Transportation Security Administration about the cyberattacks. In a statement, the FBI said it was aware of the incident but had no additional information. The TSA declined to comment, referring inquiries to individual airports. The attacks were carried out by a group of pro-Russian hackers known as Killnet, according to John Hultquist, vice president for intelligence at Mandiant, an American cybersecurity firm. Killnet called for coordinated denial-of-service attacks on cyber targets from a list it posted on its Telegram channel — a list that included several major U.S. airports. Denial-of-service attacks occur when a target is flooded with traffic until it can’t respond or crashes. Though highly visible, Hultquist characterized such attacks more as a “public nuisance” than serious security threats because they don’t target major internal systems that could affect an airport’s operations. Still, when they do take place, he said, they are effective in drawing public attention. Officials at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, which is charged with understanding, managing and reducing risks to the nation’s cyber and physical infrastructure, did not respond to request for comment Monday. The Port Authority of New York/New Jersey said LaGuardia Airport’s website experienced a denial of service incident about 3 a.m. Monday that resulted in intermittent delays for those who tried to access the site. “The Port Authority’s cybersecurity defense system did its job by detecting the incident quickly, addressing the problem in 15 minutes, and enabling us to alert others by notifying federal authorities immediately,” the agency said in a statement, adding that there was no effect to any Port Authority facilities. At Denver International Airport, the attack began around 11 a.m., officials said. Los Angeles International Airport managers said in a statement the airport’s website was partially disrupted, limited to portions of the public-facing site. They said the airport’s information technology team restored all services and is investigating the cause. “No internal airport systems were compromised and there were no operational disruptions,” the statement said.

Government Announces Farming Technology Funding Boost | BusinessGreen News – Www.businessgreen.com https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/government-announces-farming-technology-funding-boost-businessgreen-news-www-businessgreen-com/ The government has today announced plans for a further £12.5m of funding awards for automation and robotics projects through its Farming Innovation Programme, as part of a renewed push to expand the UK’s horticulture sector. Environment Secretary Ranil Jayawardena will today announce the funding will be made available in addition to the more than £70m already invested in industry-led research and development through the programme.  The new fund is now set to open in January with the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) agency and will match-fund projects that can demonstrate how they will drive economic growth, boost food security, and deliver on environmental commitments, the government said. Previous projects supported through the programme have included fruit scouting robots, automated vegetable harvesters, and new types of fertiliser, all of which are designed to boost yields and reduce environmental impacts. “We all rely on farmers and growers every day to produce high-quality food, and to look after our environment,” said Jayawardena. “Whilst we have a high degree of food security, we can boost it further. We can increase home-grown fruit and vegetable production, which is why I am bringing in expert advice and match-funding robotics and automation projects. “Technology offers huge opportunities to make farming greener and more productive, so we should harness it to help grow the economy, create jobs and improve food security too.” The announcement comes after Jayawardena last week visited the Netherlands to learn more about high-tech greenhouse and vertical growing approaches, touring a robotics institute and a glasshouse business which uses artificial intelligence, robotics, renewable energy, and water neutral systems to grow produce. He also announced plans to appoint an industry expert to work with the government to build a clearer picture of the barriers and opportunities faced by the Controlled Environment Horticulture sector. The new advisor, who is expected to be appointed later this year, will then be tasked with producing a set of recommendations and policy interventions that the government can implement to help boost the nascent industry.  Defra added that it was already exploring a number of potential reforms to help drive investment in the sector, including reviewing planning permission process to support new developments and considering plans to incentivise horticulture firms to make more use of surplus heat and CO2 from industrial processes, as well as renewable energy sources, to help drive down costs and emissions. The news comes as Jayawardena continues to face fierce criticism from environmental and renewable energy groups, following reports the government is reviewing proposed farming subsidy reforms, rules governing solar farm development, and a raft of planning regulations. The moves have been branded as an “attack on nature” by environmental campaigners who remain unconvinced by the government’s assurances that it is still committed to delivering on its net zero and environmental goals.

Benton County Seed & Grain Plant Blaze Under Control – YakTriNews KAPP-KVEW https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/benton-county-seed-grain-plant-blaze-under-control-yaktrinews-kapp-kvew/ October 10, 2022 12:58 PM Posted: October 10, 2022 12:58 PM PLYMOUTH, Wash. — Firefighters from across Benton County converged at a seed & grain plant near the Washington/Oregon border for reports of a fire inside one of the structures. KAPP-KVEW’s Rylee Fitzgerald spoke with Chief Rolland Watt of Benton County Fire & Protection District 6. He confirmed that fire crews rushed to Columbia River Seed facilities on Plymouth Industrial Rd for reports of a fire on Monday morning. Responding agencies included his own district as well as Benton County Fire Districts 1 & 2, the Richland Fire Department and Benton County Sheriff’s Office. They learned that people were inside the facility, but not the pit, which is where the fire was sparked initially. READ: Sunnyside business owner faces 12 felony charges over sale of tainted fruit juice It has since been brought under control while fire investigators search to discover what caused the blaze. However, they confirmed that seed makes for powerful fuel, which contributed to the blaze. The pit, which is about 15 feet deep, was not completely lost in the fire. Instead, only about a foot and a half of seed toward the bottom of the pit burned. Since the fire has been brought under control, officials anticipate that the building will be fully operational again shortly. It should be hospitable for those getting back to work. Before that, firefighters are checking in on the electrical integrity of the structure to ensure that another fire won’t be sparked over some kind of technical malfunction. The best credit card for your international travel plans varies based on your goals. As a baseline, you should opt for a credit card with no foreign transaction fees. Plus, you should ensure that the credit card of your choice is widely accepted in countries you regularly frequent. Beyond those basics, selecting the right credit card comes down to your specific plans. You might choose the flexibility of a travel rewards credit card or select an airline-branded card for your favorite airline. Additionally, look for a credit card that offers the most rewards for your spending habits. For example, business owners might get the most out of a business-specific credit card. But frequent travelers that stick to a specific airline might get the most perks by selecting the airline’s branded card. Large Rail Union Rejects Deal, Renewing Strike Possibility – 69News WFMZ-TV https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/large-rail-union-rejects-deal-renewing-strike-possibility-69news-wfmz-tv/ OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The third largest railroad union rejected its deal with freight railroads Monday — renewing the possibility of a strike that could cripple the economy — but before that could happen both sides will return to the bargaining table. About 56% of the track maintenance workers represented by the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division union who voted opposed the five-year contract even though it included 24% raises and $5,000 in bonuses. Union President Tony Cardwell said the railroads didn’t do enough to address worker concerns about the lack of paid time off — particularly sick time — and demanding working conditions after the major railroads eliminated nearly one-third of their jobs over the past six years. “Railroaders are discouraged and upset with working conditions and compensation and hold their employer in low regard. Railroaders do not feel valued,” Cardwell said in a statement. “They resent the fact that management holds no regard for their quality of life, illustrated by their stubborn reluctance to provide a higher quantity of paid time off, especially for sickness.” The railroads didn’t immediately comment on the rejected contract. Four other railroad unions have approved their agreements with the freight railroads that include BNSF, Union Pacific, Kansas City Southern, CSX and Norfolk Southern, but all 12 unions that represent a total of 115,000 workers must ratify their contracts to prevent a strike. One other union, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, initially rejected its deal but has since renegotiated a new contract. The voting won’t be completed until mid-November. President Joe Biden put pressure on the railroads and unions to reach a deal last month ahead of a mid-September deadline to allow a strike or walkout. Many businesses also urged Congress to be ready to intervene in the dispute and block a strike if an agreement wasn’t reached because so many companies rely on railroads to deliver their raw materials and finished products. In general, the deals the unions agreed to closely follow the recommendations a special panel of arbitrators that Biden appointed made this summer. That Presidential Emergency Board recommended what would be the biggest raises rail workers have seen in more than four decades, but it didn’t resolve the unions’ concerns about working conditions. Instead it said the unions should pursue additional negotiations or arbitration that can take years with each railroad individually. The Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way union said it agreed to delay any strike until five days after Congress reconvenes in mid November to allow time for additional negotiations. Quality of life issues took center stage at the end of these negotiations with the unions that represent conductors and engineers holding out until the end to get three unpaid leave days a year to tend to medical appointments and a promise that railroads will negotiate further about giving those employees regularly scheduled days off where they aren’t on call. The engineers and conductors have complained that strict railroad attendance policies make it hard to take any time off. The track maintenance workers in the BMWED generally have more regular schedules than engineers and conductors, but all the rail unions have objected to the lack of paid sick time in the industry — particularly after working to keep trains moving throughout the pandemic. Through Tiger Legacy Care, all alumni of LSU Athletics and their families will have access to Hall of Fame Health’s behavioral health network indefinitely. This access extends to alumni of all 21 varsity athletics programs at LSU, ensuring the access to world-class care they receive during their collegiate careers continues for the rest of their lifetimes. “Our Lady of the Lake Health is committed to providing the best possible care to LSU athletes, helping them perform at their best during competition while also preparing them for a lifetime of healthy living,” said Dr. Catherine O’Neal, chief medical officer at Our Lady of the Lake Health. “This partnership with Hall of Fame Health allows us to extend our care of athletes beyond their time on campus and provide them and their families with vital behavioral health care throughout the rest of their lives.” Originally developed by the Pro Football Hall of Fame to provide healthcare solutions to former NFL players and their families, Hall of Fame Health provides a full spectrum of mental health, behavioral health, and substance use services. Through this partnership, LSU will become the first university in the country to offer a lifetime of behavioral health services to every alumni athlete and their immediate family, with areas of focus such as stress & emotional regulation, depression, anxiety, substance use disorder, PTSD, and more. “When the Championship Health Partnership was formed, the mission was to elevate the entire state through collaborative efforts just like this one,” said Shelly Mullenix, LSU senior associate AD for health and wellness. “This agreement with Hall of Fame Health will ensure generations of Tigers continue to receive the world-class care they’ve enjoyed at LSU long after they complete their athletic careers.” Former LSU student-athletes and their families will have access to a dedicated concierge call line (866-578-9989), a 24/7 mental health crisis hotline (866-901-1245), preferred access to select clinical programs, a nationwide list of vetted and accredited providers, and discounted provider pricing. “As a proud Tiger alum and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, I am happy to see LSU joining with Hall of Fame Health as the first NCAA program to offer premier mental and behavioral health services to all its former athletes,” said Alan Faneca, former LSU All-American and NFL Hall-of-Famer. “Good mental health is essential as we compete in sports and move through life because the challenges never stop coming. This partnership will offer our former LSU athletes the support and care to help them continue to achieve their goals for the rest of their life. Once a Tiger, always a Tiger!” “Being an athlete, we face the same daily stresses as everyone else—from balancing family to day-to-day life,” said DJ Chark, former Tiger wide receiver and current Detroit Lion. “I’ve learned to use meditation as well as a therapist, and I try and stay in the present to help me work through life’s challenges. All former LSU athletes need access to the same tools and resources. That’s why Tiger Legacy Care is a needed resource for the LSU Athletics family.” The program will be funded by the Tiger Athletic Foundation’s Our Lady of the Lake Programmatic Support Fund for LSU Athletics, which was created through the Championship Health Partnership announced in February. Further support will be provided by the National L-Club, LSU’s national letterwinner association. “The Tiger Legacy Care program provides the meaningful opportunities and treatment options Hall of Fame Health envisioned when looking to expand its reach beyond Pro Football Hall of Famers and their families,” said Ryan Cain, President of Hall of Fame Health. “First of its kind, and with great partners in LSU and Our Lady and the Lake Health, TLC will positively impact thousands of college athletes for life by providing access to elite mental and behavioral health treatment.” About Championship Health Partnership The Championship Health Partnership is a first of its kind, long-term, healthcare-focused partnership between Our Lady of the Lake Health and LSU that optimizes both organization’s talents, resources, assets and brands to achieve measurable impacts for Baton Rouge and the state. Together, Our Lady of the Lake Health and LSU will set a new standard for healthcare delivery, research, and education that improves the health and well-being of the LSU population and our community, supports athletic excellence, fosters research to stimulate economic growth and development, and transforms healthcare and education for the future. Together We Roar. About Hall of Fame Health Hall of Fame Health is an affiliate of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and was started at the behest of Hall of Famers to provide more resources to all former football players and their families, not just Hall of Famers.  Hall of Fame Health provides a concierge service that can guide families to world-class doctors and other healthcare providers, can assist with understanding health benefits and selecting among insurance options, and can advocate for families who need expertise on their side as they navigate the complexities of providers, benefits, and coverage issues, etc.  In addition, Hall of Fame Health has assembled a diverse group of premier clinicians and physician leaders on its Medical Advisory Board and a rapidly growing nationwide network of best-in-class health systems, medical groups, and behavioral health professionals who stand ready to provide a Hall of Fame experience for our football community, including mental health, addiction, and substance abuse, and in times of true crisis.  Additionally, Hall of Fame Health has established the Hall of Fame Family Recovery Fund in partnership with Fund Recovery to raise money and provide financial assistance to those in need.  Beyond serving the community of former NFL players and families, Hall of Fame Health has extended its platform to select veteran organizations and college football alumni groups. The AFC West was pegged to be one of the NFL’s must-watch divisions prior to the start of the season. So far, it’s been a familiar face at the top, while a familiar face sits at the bottom. The Raiders took a pair of big swings this offseason to right their fortunes. First, they hired Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as their new head coach. In the months that followed, they traded for Davante Adams, reuniting Fresno State teammates Adams and Derek Carr in Sin City. It hasn’t exactly worked out for the Raiders thus far. Vegas is sitting at 1-3 entering their first division matchup with the Chiefs, though the Raiders are coming off their firs twin of the year, downing the Broncos in Week 4.  While the Raiders were something of a sexy pick to make the playoffs — some thought they’d even have a shot at a division crown — it’s still Patrick Mahomes sitting atop the AFC West throne entering Week 5. Mahomes and the Chiefs offense still are working out the kinks of their rebuilt wide receiver room, but a strong, 41-point showing against the Buccaneers’ defense in Week 4 should allay concerns at least for another week. Why Im Ready To Work In VR And Embrace The Office Of The Metaverse Digital Trends
Why Im Ready To Work In VR And Embrace The Office Of The Metaverse Digital Trends
Why I’m Ready To Work In VR And Embrace The Office Of The Metaverse – Digital Trends https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/why-im-ready-to-work-in-vr-and-embrace-the-office-of-the-metaverse-digital-trends/ In the days leading up to the launch of the Quest Pro, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has called the new headset a “great working device” — possibly even a laptop replacement. Gaming in VR is one thing — but socializing, living, and working there? It seems as if the broad consensus on the internet is: “no thanks.” But not me. I’m ready and excited to move my working life into virtual reality, and from what we know so far, the Quest Pro just may be the device that fixes many of the current problems with trying to do so on current-gen hardware. What’s better than a mouse? Navigation is one of the main hang-ups with trying to work in VR at the moment. Work requires being as efficient as possible, which isn’t exactly what you’d call the current VR controls. With a current Meta Quest headset, you’re stuck using the two controllers. They’re quite comfortable and accurate, but it feels a bit like typing with two fingers. You have the option of pairing a mouse and keyboard with a Quest 2, of course, or you can even put down the controllers and use your hands to interact with the environment. The variety is nice, but none of it is so different from what’s possible with a laptop or PC. Replacing the mouse and keyboard, though, is no easy feat. As effective has touchscreens have become, most people feel that when it comes to getting real work done, the mouse (or pointer) and keyboard is still the most efficient. The real innovation comes with eye tracking, which is a feature that is certain to be demonstrated with the Quest Pro at tomorrow’s Meta Connect event. With this new VR headset, you’ll be able to use your gaze to control guide input. This subtle difference could provide a dramatic boost in productivity. Have you ever made the mistake of looking at one window or screen and beginning to type while another window is active? Your keystrokes and text will affect the active window. This can be disastrous if you have an app open that accepts keyboard commands. A few words that you thought would be typed into a document or text field could become a series of commands that send unfinished emails, merge layers, or delete documents. With eye tracking, the Quest Pro should be able to avoid this nightmare. If eye tracking is used to identify the active window, gestures, button presses, and keyboard input will be sent to the window and app that you’re looking at. This is just one example of how a VR headset can be more intuitive since it has access to new forms of input and can work in a way that matches natural human interactions instead of forcing us to learn to do things the way the computer expects. Are VR screens better than real computer monitors? Screens are the next big hurdle with moving work into VR, but this is an area where the metaverse already has an advantage. Virtual screens remove all of the hassles of buying and setting up physical computer monitors. You can create several, large virtual displays at no extra cost and without requiring a large desk or wall mount to hold bulky screens. With a high-quality VR headset, you can use a multiscreen setup anywhere whether sitting, standing, or even lying down. I’ve tried using a computer with three monitors, a MacBook with an iPad connected via Universal Control, and a computer with a phone as a secondary device. None really works ideally because they are physical objects with restrictions on size, location, and input. Breaking out of the old way of computing could easily provide us with a far better solution. A VR headset’s virtual monitors behave more like floating windows in a 360-degree environment than regular screens. This provides the most flexibility possible to create displays in different aspect ratios and sizes. You can make a portrait screen for writing or formatting a print document, a landscape display for traditional computer work, or place a small screen nearby in your virtual space to design something that will be viewed on the screen of a phone or a watch. Of course, most VR headsets at the moment lack the dynamic range and color fidelity of a high-quality computer monitor. That will improve over time, and Meta’s Quest Pro should offer a significant improvement in display quality since it is rumored to have mini-LED backlighting and a higher resolution than the Quest 2. A VR headset also shows a slightly different image to each eye, providing depth to objects. Very few computer displays have this capability. This is a game-changing difference if you design real-world products or architecture, or if you work with 3D graphics. With a Quest 2, you can create a 3D model by directly drawing and manipulating objects. You can ditch flat screens entirely and physically walk around a virtual building and get a sense of the flow and scale. Both virtual and augmented reality solutions are revolutionary in this regard, making concepts look and feel more real. Virtual meetings might be better than reality As videoconferencing has become a more and more important part of our online work lives, taking these meetings into VR has some very positive benefits. Nothing beats being face-to-face, sure, but when that’s not possible, it’s easy to see how meeting in VR beats standard video calls. First off, even the fastest flight or work commute is painfully slow compared to teleporting to a virtual workspace, and Horizon Workrooms is just one example of how a team can come together to present and share ideas in a way that’s more personal than a video call by using VR headsets. Right now, the problem is with avatars and tracking. There’s little benefit with the current technology, which doesn’t give you access to the full range of body language and facial expression needed to properly communicate. The technology is still evolving, and Meta’s current avatars have plenty of room for improvement, that’s for sure. But avatars are rumored to get a big upgrade with the Meta Quest Pro, making your virtual presence feel more real. With eye and face tracking, your avatar will look more realistic than ever to others, showing your reactions and where you’re looking, just as if you were present. On the flip side, your view of the environment can be brighter, sharper, and more realistic with processor and display improvements. If there’s one part of work that feels best suited for the metaverse, it’s certainly meetings, and I can’t wait to have more interactive and engaging meetings with my colleagues in the future. Drawbacks and solutions for working in VR It’s not all good news when working in VR. Sharing in person is more difficult with a VR headset since no one can glance over and see your screen. That might be a good thing if you want to avoid distractions or are working on a sensitive project. Your screen is automatically private when wearing a VR headset and audio is quite muted to others when wearing a Quest even if you don’t have earbuds in. If you want to share your Meta Quest screen with others that are nearby, it’s easy to cast from your Quest to a TV, phone, tablet, or computer. Remote meetings are easier to set up without VR, but the virtual environment has some advantages. Sometimes you might not feel like you are presentable for a work meeting, but your avatar will look as dapper as ever — even if you just rolled out of bed and are wearing pajamas. The multiscreen advantage can also help with meetings since your virtual space has room for people, notes, reference material, a whiteboard, and more. You can even present three-dimensional art that would be difficult to experience with a traditional flat computer display. Another concern with VR productivity is discomfort after only a few hours of wearing a headset. The Quest 2 is relatively light and isn’t a problem in the short term, but you’ll often notice an imprint on your face from the pressure of the headset. It can cause headaches and skin irritation. A lighter headset with better weight distribution that improves overall comfort will help. Meta has already shared that it’s planning on using pancake lenses, which are thinner and lighter. This type of lens also features a larger sweet spot of sharp focus. Meta’s Quest Pro is also expected to have its battery mounted at the rear to balance the weight for greater comfort. Lastly, mobility is greatly limited when wearing a current Quest VR headset even though you can trigger a passthrough view of your real room. The trouble is that you’re seeing through a low-resolution, black-and-white camera. The Quest Pro will have a higher-resolution color passthrough camera, allowing you to travel around your physical room without the need to remove your headset. Rumors suggest Meta will offer a docking station for its next-generation headset that makes it quicker and easier to switch between wearing the Quest Pro and charging it so it’s ready to go at a moment’s notice. Performance is the final piece of the puzzle. The Quest 2 is a relatively slow device when compared to your desktop computer, with most laptops putting it to shame in benchmarks. However, it was released in 2020, and the Quest 2 still tops the list of best VR headsets. It doesn’t lag when playing games, but when using the browser, some slowness is apparent. That’s where its age shows. Meta’s Quest Pro will feature upgraded hardware meant for professionals, and rumors suggest its performance might be similar to that of a Chromebook or a tablet. That suggests the Quest Pro won’t reach the top levels of computing power, but it should have enough power to run most web apps with decent speed. Whether that’s fast enough or not depends on your usage. I wouldn’t expect to edit 4K videos with a Quest Pro or use it to bulk-process RAW photos. But as a writer, I generally only need a computer that can ...

Heres How Small Restaurant Chains Should Approach Technology Nations Restaurant News
Here’s How Small Restaurant Chains Should Approach Technology – Nation’s Restaurant News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/heres-how-small-restaurant-chains-should-approach-technology-nations-restaurant-news/ By now, building a tech stack is a given for restaurants of all sizes, but as we’ve previously stated, investing in technology does not take a one-size-fits-all approach. While national restaurant brands like Domino’s and Chipotle have become leaders in cutting-edge foodservice technology, how does a smaller brand compete with fewer resources? According to Peter Baghdassarian, co-owner of seven-unit Armenian kabob chain, Massis Kabob, you have to do your homework, know your company’s needs, and not be afraid of investing ahead of the curve. Baghdassarian said that Massis Kabob, which has been serving Mediterranean food in California mall food courts since 1976, was one of the first restaurants to invest in digital video menu boards around 17 years ago. “This was a huge deal at the time, and we had to partner with a company in Taiwan to make them because it was so hard to get them here,” he said. “The menu boards increased our business because our food was so hard to explain through regular menu displays.” When Baghdassarian’s father first opened Massis Kabob, most customers were unfamiliar with Mediterranean food and had never eaten kabobs, Baghdassarian said, so eventually the digital menu boards helped to explain the menu of shish kabobs, pita wraps, and combo plates. This is exactly how Baghdassarian approaches all aspects of food service technology: will this make my employees’ lives easier? Is it solving a problem? If not, it goes in the garbage, he said. Currently, Massis Kabob has a very simple tech stack: they use Toast for POS and third-party delivery integration, Incentivio for building out and operating their loyalty app, and are currently looking for a new partner for scheduling software. “When we wanted to swap out our POS system, we did not have a full-time IT guy to help us like a big chain would,” Baghdassarian said. “If the tech requires a mouse and a computer in an office, my manager is not going to use it. We don’t have that kind of setup. It has to be on a phone or tablet and has to be very intuitive.” While it might sound like Baghdassarian is skeptical of a lot of technology, he just knows exactly what he wants and what would work for a counter-service kebab restaurant. Massis Kabob just opened a new flagship location last month in Culver City. The 3,500-square-foot-store is the largest of the chain’s seven locations and can accommodate on-premises patrons and lanes for pickup and delivery. Unlike many of Massis Kabob’s larger restaurant industry colleagues, however, the off-premises-focused location does not have a drive-thru lane because “that’s just not practical in Los Angeles.” As the restaurant industry in general has become more off-premises-focused and people discover and interact restaurants increasingly through apps, Baghdassarian said it has been an adjustment for their brand. “We’re not flipping burgers,” he said, adding that it takes more effort and exact timing to make kabob orders from scratch, and it’s not a continuous process like other types of quick-service would be. “We tell people their food will be ready in 12 minutes, because otherwise it will be sitting and getting cold,” Baghdassarian said. “We call our customers personally when their food is ready for pick up, and even though it’s one more step, it lets us do more quality control than our competitors.”   Of course, this process is much easier now with the launch of Massis Kabob’s new app which became available to download this year and allows them to have a one-on-one relationship with customers through crucial customer data. “We’re glad to be working [with Incentivio] because I avoid having to hire four guys to sit around in an office doing data analysis,” Baghdassarian said. “McDonald’s might have a group of data scientists doing custom loyalty stuff for them, but I’m not going to have the time or half a million dollars to spend on that.” As for Baghdassarian’s final bits of advice for investing in tech as a smaller restaurant brand? Don’t necessarily go for the biggest companies in technology just because you recognize the names, make sure the technology is user-friendly, and take advantage of your more compact size to add more personal touches: “One time we had a tech failure on the part of a third-party delivery company and a customer’s food didn’t get picked up by a driver,” he said. “We looked him up in the database and noted that he was a regular customer and had spent thousands of dollars with us. So, I picked up the bag of food and drove 20 minutes to hand-deliver it myself.” Contact Joanna at [email protected] Find her on Twitter: @JoannaFantozzi

SBLive/Sports Illustrated Power 25: Mater Dei Back On Top In National High School Football Rankings – Scorebook Live https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/sblive-sports-illustrated-power-25-mater-dei-back-on-top-in-national-high-school-football-rankings-scorebook-live/ Mater Dei is back in a familiar spot: No. 1 in the SBLive/Sports Illustrated Power 25 national high school football rankings.  The Monarchs ended the 2021 season as the top-ranked team in the nation, and after Saturday’s 17-7 win over previous No. 1 St. John Bosco, Mater Dei returns to its perch.  The Monarchs played a brutally physical style of defense and executed at a high level on offense to win the rivalry showdown.  On the other end of the rankings, Lehi (Utah) debuts following an impressive 28-24 win over Timpview (Utah).  Get the complete breakdown of the latest SBLive/SI Power 25 national high school football rankings below. SBLive/SI’s national football rankings are compiled by SBLive reporter Connor Morrissette and Sports Illustrated’s Director of Football Recruiting John Garcia based on observations and conversations with an extensive network of coaching and media sources across the country. The rankings will be released every Monday throughout the 2022 season. SBLIVE/SI POWER 25 NATIONAL FOOTBALL RANKINGS Oct. 10, 2022 1. Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) (7-0) Last week: 2 Last game: 17-7 win over No. 4 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) Next game: Oct. 14 vs. Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) Ranking rationale: Mater Dei did it again. Going up against a St. John Bosco defense with more national recruits (12) than starters (11), the Monarchs ran the ball well with sophomore Jordon Davison and QB Elijah Brown to eat the clock and beat the Braves 17-7. Mater Dei finished the game with 176 yards on the ground. Both Davison and Brown rushed for TDs. On defense, Zabien Brown and Daryus Dixson snagged interceptions and the Monarchs’ ends, tackles and linebackers consistently won at the line of scrimmage. Mater Dei is the best team in the country. They’ve won five of the last six games against St. John Bosco.  2. Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Fla.) (5-0) Last week: 3 Last game: 28-0 win over Gulliver Prep (Miami, Fla.) Next game: Oct. 13 vs. Somerset Academy Key (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) Ranking rationale: Chaminade-Madonna hasn’t played since Sept. 22 due to Hurricane Ian.  In one of the games of the year in Florida high school football, Chaminade-Madonna beat No. 6 American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) 42-34 last month. Davion Gause rushed for three touchdowns and Cedric Bailey connected on an 85-yard touchdown pass play with Jeremiah Smith to lift the Lions to a thrilling win. “They’re going to win it all, too,” American Heritage head coach Mike Smith said of Chaminade-Madonna postgame. “That’s one of the best football teams, and I’ve been here 10 years, and that’s one of the best football teams we’ve seen in my 10 years here. They’re well coached. They have a lot of talent. They’re going to go get it.” 3. Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) (7-1) Last week: 5 Last game: 69-0 win over Legacy (North Las Vegas) Next game: Oct. 14 at Palo Verde (Las Vegas) Ranking rationale: Bishop Gorman’s three-point loss to No. 1 Mater Dei back in August looks even better following Mater Dei’s 17-7 win over No. 4 St. John Bosco last week. Bishop Gorman performed much better on offense against the Monarchs’ vaunted defense than St. John Bosco did. Based on that result and Bishop Gorman steamrolling every Nevada team they’ve faced, the Gaels move up to No. 3 this week.  Bishop Gorman has 15 of the top 25 2023 recruits in the state of Nevada on its roster, according to 247Sports.com. USC wide receiver commit Zachariah Branch and Georgia cornerback commit Justyn Rhett are the headlining recruits. 4. St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) (6-1) Last week: 1 Last game: 17-7 loss to No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) Next game: Oct. 14 vs. JSerra (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) Ranking rationale: Defensively, St. John Bosco struggled against Mater Dei’s rushing attack, but the Braves’ defense only gave up 17 points in last week’s rivalry loss. What killed St. John Bosco was poor offensive execution. Quarterbacks Pierce Clarkson and Caleb Sanchez completed only 14 passes for 106 yards. Clarkson, the Braves’ starter, missed the second half after suffering a concussion in the first half. He was sacked three times and never really looked comfortable. Sanchez didn’t look comfortable either facing constant pressure over the final two quarters. The Braves have one of the most talented rosters in the country and they will most likely get another crack at the Monarchs in the Division 1 Southern Section championship game in November. That game will most likely decide the national No. 1 ranking.  5. Miami Central (Fla.) (6-0) Last week: 4 Last game: 42-7 win over Northwestern (Miami) Next game: Oct. 14 vs. Norland (Miami) Ranking rationale: Central dominated a good Northwestern team 42-7 last week. The Miami Herald called the performance “near-perfect.” “We came out and dominated,” Central quarterback Keyone Jenkins told Mark Stallworth postgame. “The City thought it was going to be a big game. It really wasn’t.” Jenkins, an FIU commit, threw a TD and rushed for a second score. The impressive victory keeps Miami Central in the national title hunt.  In their first game of the season, the Rockets handed No. 8 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) its first loss to an in-state opponent since 2013.  6. American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) (6-1) Last week: 6 Last game: 42-18 win over Western (Davie, Fla.) Next game: Oct. 14 at Stranahan (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) Ranking rationale: American Heritage made a statement in its 21-2 win over a very talented Cardinal Gibbons team two weeks ago. The Patriots had a goal line stand on Cardinal Gibbons’ opening possession. On offense, 2023 running back Mark Fletcher and wide out Brandon Inniss, two Ohio State commits, had big games to lead American Heritage to victory. Last week, the Patriots rolled to a 42-18 win over Western. American Heritage’s lone loss this season came against No. 2 Chaminade-Madonna 42-34.  7. St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) (5-0) Last week: 8 Last game: 22-15 win over No. 25 Kahuku (Hawaii) Next game: Oct. 28 at Arundel (Gambrills, Md.) Ranking rationale: St. Frances Academy got Kahuku’s best shot before coming back to win 22-15 two weeks ago. Quarterback Michael Van Buren completed the Panthers’ turnaround with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Kyree Benton with just 39 seconds to play in the fourth quarter. The Panthers also got two defensive scores in the game. Van Buren has received scholarship offers from Alabama, Miami and Oklahoma, among others. Class of 2023 4-star defensive lineman Dashawn Womack (LSU commit) is the top player for the Panthers on defense. He scored a 75-yard touchdown on a fumble recovery against Kahuku. St. Frances had an opponent cancel at the last second last week and now the Panthers won’t play again until the last week of October.  8. IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) (4-1) Last week: 9 Last game: 45-0 win over St. Thomas More (Oakdale, Conn.) Next game: Oct. 14 at American Collegiate Academy (Clearwater, Fla.) Ranking rationale: Since losing to No. 4 Miami Central (Fla.) 20-14 to open the season, IMG has outscored its next four opponents 199-45. In the class of 2023, three of the top 35 recruits in the country are on IMG’s roster, per 247Sports.com, and in the 2024 class, five players are ranked in the top 20 nationally. The Ascenders are stacked with blue chip prospects. 9. Chandler (Ariz.) (6-0) Last week: 10 Last game: 40-21 win over Casteel (Queen Creek, Ariz.) Next game: Oct. 21 at Mountain View (Mesa, Ariz.) Ranking rationale: Chandler led 34-0 over Casteel at halftime last week. Running back Ca’lil Valentine supplied three rushing touchdowns for the Wolves — all in the first half — including scoring on an 80-yard run on the first play from scrimmage. Before the high school football season began, one Arizona high school football insider said this about the Wolves: “Chandler is easily No. 1 in Arizona, the runaway favorite.” Expect the Wolves to go undefeated. 10. Westlake (Austin, Texas) (6-0) Last week: 11 Last game: 66-17 win over Anderson (Austin, Texas) Next game: Oct. 14 at Dripping Springs (Texas) Ranking rationale: Westlake has won 46 games in a row dating back to 2019. The Chaparrals are led by senior receivers Jaden Greathouse, a Notre Dame commit, and Keaton Kubecka, a Kansas commit. Class of 2023 interior lineman TJ Shanahan is committed to Texas A&M and class of 2023 edge rusher Colton Vasek is committed to Oklahoma.  Despite their dominant run, Westlake is ranked at No. 10 because the Chaparrals have played a very easy schedule. When the playoffs come and Westlake goes up against better competition, they’ll have the opportunity to rise in the rankings.  11. North Shore (Houston, Texas) (6-0) Last week: 7 Last game: 34-27 win over Summer Creek (Houston, Texas) Next game: Oct. 14 vs. West Brook (Beaumont, Texas) Ranking rationale: North Shore led by two scores for much of the game against Summer Creek, but the Mustangs allowed the 3-3 Bulldogs to hang around, which drops North Shore to No. 11 this week. Without starting QB Kaleb Bailey, who suffered an injury two weeks ago, senior UTSA commit David Amador slid over from receiver to play QB for the Mustangs. He rushed for 235 yards and three touchdowns against Summer Creek.  North Shore has won three Class 6A Division I state championships in the last four years in Texas. Can they win a fourth without their starting QB if Bailey is done for the season? 12. Guyer (Denton, Texas) (6-0) Last week: 12 Last game: 56-7 win over Boyd (McKinney, Texas) Next game: Oct. 14 at Braswell (Little Elm, Texas) Ranking rationale: Guyer’s explosive offense was at it again two weeks ago in the Wild...

7 Costa Rica Vacations For Every Travel Style The Washington Post
7 Costa Rica Vacations For Every Travel Style The Washington Post
7 Costa Rica Vacations For Every Travel Style – The Washington Post https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/7-costa-rica-vacations-for-every-travel-style-the-washington-post/ Petite in size but wealthy in natural wonders, Costa Rica is one of the most versatile vacation spots in the world. Whether you’re into sandy beaches and rolling hillside farms or misty cloud forests and active volcanoes, there are options aplenty for relaxation and adventure. The Central American country was already a popular travel destination before the pandemic, but its array of outdoor attractions and early moves to relax entry requirements drove a surge in interest. “Costa Rica is definitely one of our hottest destinations right now,” says Alisa Cohen, founder of the boutique travel agency Luxe Traveler Club. “It’s easy to get to, there’s amazing hotels, there’s tons for every age — especially if you have kids — to do.” With all of Costa Rica’s potential, where should you go? Most travel experts who book trips to Costa Rica agree: Don’t spend your time in one place. “We always say split it,” says Nicki Wheeler, a British expat who’s lived in Costa Rica since 2004 and owns the travel company Sendero Adventures. Wheeler recommends visitors get away from chain hotels and mainstream sites. With so much nature to explore, she says, they should “be adventurous. Do things maybe that you wouldn’t do at home.” 1 For a wellness retreat: Puerto Viejo de Talamanca Return to menu While many different areas in Costa Rica cater to travelers who want a vacation focused on their health and well-being, Jorge Varela, a private guide for ToursByLocals, recommends renting a house in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca in southeast Costa Rica. There you’ll find beautiful rainforest, access to the Caribbean Sea, yoga, mindfulness and meditation workshops and restaurants serving organic food. “Something that I like about this area is they don’t have chain or big hotels,” he says. “They have boutique hotels and bungalows in the middle of the forest.” Alternatively, Sánchez says the Valle del General has a lot of “glamping” and also boasts boutique hotels that focus on wellness. Wheeler is a fan of retreats in Golfo Dulce, a tropical fjord in the Osa Peninsula, her favorite area in Costa Rica. “This is still very rustic, still very local,” she says of the area. As you look for a wellness retreat, or any accommodation, tour and activity in Costa Rica, opt for Costa Rican-owned businesses to best support the local community. “If you go to the international chains, the main percentage of the profit goes out of the country,” says Pabrö Sánchez, a travel guide and chef who takes clients on tailor-made trips for his company Sapoa Adventures. 2 For beaches: Take your pick of Caribbean or Pacific Return to menu With nearly 800 miles of coastline, Costa Rica boasts many distinct beaches. The Pacific side tends to get more attention thanks to its world-class surf spots, but the Caribbean coast dazzles, too. “That’s where you’ll find the most beautiful coastline in Costa Rica,” Varela says of the country’s southern Caribbean region, listing off “Champagne-colored sand, turquoise waters, coral reefs good for snorkeling, colorful schools of fish.” Wheeler says Pacific beaches, “especially in the Guanacaste area” to the north, “are just so beautiful … probably some of the best in the world.” “There’s everything from little touristy towns to completely deserted beaches,” she adds. On the Pacific coast, Varela recommends staying around Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio or Playa Flamingo, known for its pinkish sand and good hotels. If you do pick the Caribbean side, Varela says to go between August and November to catch the best weather, even if that means it’s the rainy season elsewhere. “You have sunny mornings and afternoon rain,” he says. “As long as there’s not a storm, you can be in the hot springs while it’s raining; the contrast feels amazing.” Return to menu While Costa Rica isn’t famous for its gastronomy, Wheeler says recent changes to the food scene include new takes on local ingredients and traditions. “It’s absolutely amazing, especially in San José,” she says. Varela says Barrio Escalante is the best neighborhood for food lovers, where “there are literally seven to 10 blocks with restaurants, pubs, specialty coffee shops.” He says there are also spots for “more refined” cooking as well as sodas, the name for small local restaurants, where you can find “more traditional tapas we call bocas.” Even if you want to spend time eating your way through San José, Sánchez recommends staying outside of the city proper. Areas in the nearby highlands like Alajuela and Heredia have fewer crowds and better views. Sánchez says clients have had life-changing experiences going with him to native Indigenous communities to harvest ingredients together — sometimes even butchering an animal they’ll eat — and cooking it in their homes. “It’s magical,” Sánchez says. “People cry.” 4 For zip-lines and volcano hikes: Corcovado National Park Return to menu Costa Rica is synonymous with adventure tourism. “That’s what we’re good at,” Wheeler says, noting the country’s famous surf, national parks, zip-lining and volcano trekking. Plus, “we have the Pacuare River, which is one of the top 10 rivers in the world for white-water rafting,” she says. At Corcovado National Park, “they do two- or three-night trips where you go live with the park rangers,” she says. “ … It’s very, very remote and it’s definitely one of the places that hosts most of the wildlife species of Costa Rica.” Surfers will want to hit the Pacific coast. For beginners, Sánchez suggests the towns of Nosara, Malpaís or Santa Teresa. The latter is “extremely good,” for different types of breaks, he says. 5 For families: La Fortuna Return to menu Varela and Wheeler say families will find activities for all ages in La Fortuna. “It’s an activity hub,” Wheeler says, listing options like tours of chocolate farms, visiting hot springs and Arenal Volcano National Park. For a beach, Varela sends families to Playa Hermosa because it’s easily accessible from the Liberia Guanacaste Airport (LIR); has calm, swimmable water; and is good for snorkeling. Varela says families can also take boat rides from Playa Hermosa to secluded beaches and islands. Sánchez, who has a 5-year-old daughter, says travelers will find much of Costa Rica to be family-friendly (except for the south Caribbean, where the hiking may be too intense). If he had to narrow it down, Sánchez would send families to the North Pacific region for horseback riding, hiking and tree-climbing. 6 For wildlife: Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve Return to menu To see wild animals, head to the misty forest of Monteverde, home to hundreds of species of birds, monkeys, bats, reptiles and amphibians, porcupines and sloths. “The hikes in Monteverde Cloud Forest are amazing,” Wheeler says. “Especially you go early in the morning.” Sánchez says travelers should be wary of places that are advertised as animal sanctuaries but are really just zoos built for tourists to take photos with animals. The government has a #StopAnimalSelfies campaign encouraging travelers to avoid animals that have been captured for photo opps. Wheeler says a way to tell the difference between a true sanctuary and a sham is that a genuine place will have a rehabilitation program and records of its releases. “Any certified tour guide here will be completely opposed to any kind of activity involving animal selfies,” Wheeler says. “We have so much wildlife in our tiny country that you will be able to take photos as long as they are not interrupting their natural processes.” 7 For something off the beaten path: The Osa Peninsula Return to menu Costa Rica has plenty of hidden gems, but they’re not simple to reach. For example, there’s the Osa Peninsula at the southernmost tip of the country near the Panama border. Varela suggests splurging on an ecolodge like La Paloma on the peninsula’s Drake Bay, where the nature is pristine. “It’s remote and harder to get to … and a little bit more expensive than more-touristy areas,” he says. That’s on purpose: Those extra barriers for entry help prevent overtourism. For a unique experience, Sánchez says you’ll have to hire a local guide. “We have a four or five places that we do not promote the names of for people to come on their own,” he says. “We’ve tried to keep it kind of hidden — a lot of people really appreciate not seeing other tourists around.” %

The request to block the website of VideoLAN, the non-profit that operates VLC Media Player, was sent by the Home Ministry. (File Photo) The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) ordered the blocking of the website of VLC Media Player after it found that the site was communicating with servers of a previously banned app by the ministry which was transferring sensitive personal data of Indians to a “hostile country,” The Indian Express has learnt. Sign In The request to block the website of VideoLAN, the non-profit that operates VLC Media Player, was sent by the Home Ministry. VideoLan’s URL, videolan.org, from where the VLC Media Player software could be downloaded, was blocked in the country under Section 69(A) of the Information Technology Act sometime in February. However, the VLC Media Player software is available for download on Google and Apple’s app stores. Earlier this month, VideoLan had sent a legal notice to MeitY and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), seeking to know the reasons for which the site had been blocked in India, and demanding a copy of the blocking order issued for blocking its URL. MeitY is learnt to have prepared an internal note in response to the legal notice – which VideoLan had issued with assistance from the Delhi-based digital rights group Internet Freedom Foundation – and is in the process of sharing it with VideoLan. According to a source familiar with the contents of the ministry’s note, VideoLan’s website was “communicating” with an app called Onmyoji Arena and the data collected by the site was transferred through this app to a “hostile country”. A separate technical evaluation committee has also confirmed this fact, the note is understood to have mentioned. The app in question here, Onmyoji Arena, was one of the 54 apps that MeitY had ordered to block in February for alleged Chinese-links and for posing a national security risk to India. The ministry is also said to have relied on various “open source threat intelligence reports” to conclude that VLC Media Player was used by a China-backed hacking group called ‘Cicada’ for carrying out cyber attacks. These threat intelligence reports also purportedly revealed a malicious campaign from hackers associated with the Chinese government who were using VLC Media Player to “launch a custom malware loader”. In cybersecurity parlance, a loader is essentially a malicious code used for communication between the attacker and the compromised system. However, it is worth noting that the various threat intelligence reports that MeitY is learnt to have mentioned in its note are from between April and August this year, whereas the VideoLan website was banned before that time period, in February. As such, VideoLan is not a China-based entity, but is headquartered in France. Queries sent to MeitY and VideoLan remained unanswered until publication. In its legal notice, issued on October 4, Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the president and lead VLC developer of VideoLan had expressed shock at the blocking of the website despite the “Government of India itself endorsing the use of VLC as a part of its Digital India initiative”. “By blocking the URL, your offices are in violation of international obligations to protect free speech in India. This incident also affects the fundamental rights of all Indian users of VLC who have the right to receive the information freely available on the URL,” VideoLan’s legal notice had said. © The Indian Express (P) Ltd First published on: 10-10-2022 at 11:40:45 pm

We spent months researching organizations that bring in under $5 million in funds per year (because we prefer to focus on grassroots efforts). We surveyed organizations about their audience and impacts. And we finally landed on 14 mission-aligned partners working in seven categories: Hiking and Camping, Cycling, Running, Climbing, Winter Sports, Healthy Living, and Sustainability. Trust us, these organizations are worth your attention and support. No matter what your outdoor jam is, we’ve got you covered. So pick your passion, then Find Your Good. We all thought he was going to be able to play in the second game, but it’s not quite there. There’s only six days between the two…He’s a lot better, but he still has that feeling that could be problematic in a game of this importance, and he preferred to sit it out. We’re going to see how it progresses during the week, and it’s very probable that he’s available for Marseille.” “You all know how important Leo is in our play, but the most important thing is his physical shape and his connection with Neymar and Kylian and the wing-backs. We’ll have to find other solutions, other situations, other connections to create danger for the Portuguese defence.” Benfica draw: “First, you have to analyse the first game, and see how Benfica caused us problems. You have to ask yourself if everything was done right tactically. If we decide to go for another system, we have to be able to create new connections, we can get the players playing higher up the pitch, there’s a whole analysis to do regarding the options. I speak a lot to my senior players, with my staff, to see how we can change in terms of the players who are missing.” Marseille on Sunday: “Every week is important at Paris Saint-Germain. There’s this double-header with Benfica, there was the match with Nice before the international break, and the highly anticipated meeting with Marseille on Sunday. It’s an important week in terms of the stakes and the games, but the week after will be very important and the week after that too. We take into account each player’s shape, knowing that certain players will rejoin the squad soon.” Pinned Gomez speaks up Sevilla’s Papu Gomez has spoken ahead of the clash with Borussia Dortmund with the Spaniards now led by Jorge Sampaoli after Julen Lopetegui’s dismissal. Pinned City in Copenhagen Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola on… The XI: “I will decide on the selection. I will speak with players, doctors and physios and decide the best. We will see.” Qualification: “We play one week later and they (Copenhagen) have pride and they want to perform. But at the same time, we have a chance to conclude our qualification for the next stage and we are going to try.” Defender Nathan Ake on… This season: “I am happy. I played a few games and then got a setback, but thankfully it was not too bad. I feel I am progressing well and hopefully, I will continue like this.” Form: “At the moment I am very happy and the team is happy, we are in a good flow, but it is only the beginning. We have so much more to do.” Copenhagen: “We have to be prepared and focused, like in the last game, and hopefully we can do well. In the second half, they changed their shape a little bit and created a few more dangerous moments.” Pinned Srna’s emotional plea The former Croatia international who is now Shakhtar Donetsk director of football has addressed each Champions League participant to ask for support for Ukraine through Saving Lives after Russian aggression intensified: “Today Ukraine needs your support more than ever,” he wrote. “So I addressed the European clubs and I am sure that many teams will not stay aside and show solidarity with our people and country.” Pinned Real arrive in Poland The defending champions’ boss Carlo Ancelotti and Lucas Vazquez have been speaking ahead of the clash with Shakhtar Donetsk. “What we have to do is to see how the players who played on the weekend are feeling,” said the Italian. “This training session is important to see which players are line-up on Tuesday.” “It’s a key game for us,” added the Spaniard. “If we win we take a major step to qualify. It’s not easy to achieve.” Pinned Leipzig lines RBL boss Marco Rose on… Celtic Park: “A great stadium. We are expecting a good crowd with an audience who understands football and not only supports their team, but also appreciates it when the opposition plays well. It will be fun to play here!” Regrets: “We are not looking back at the Rangers game. Our focus has to be looking forward to Celtic vs. Leipzig. To this great game in a great stadium with a great atmosphere in the Champions League. And obviously on the next three points!” Striker Andre Silva on… Celtic Park: “It will not be easy because of the fans and the atmosphere. We will need to give it everything right until the end and try to win. We need to be compact as a team and deliver the same energy we did in the first leg.” Pinned Pioli and Tomori chime in pre-Chelsea The AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli and defender Fikayo Tomori have been speaking ahead of Tuesday’s UCL clash with Chelsea. Pinned Galtier confirms Messi absence The PSG boss has confirmed that Messi will miss the Benfica clash. However, the Frenchman did hint that the Argentine will be back for this weekend’s Classique vs. Marseille. “Leo felt discomfort in the calf during the match at Benfica,” said Galtier. “It is very likely that he will play against Marseille on Sunday. It’s an important week! PSG is a club which plays every game to win.” Midfielder Vitinha also chimed in regarding his blossoming relationship with fellow schemer Marco Verratti: “I am off to a very good start this season,” said the Portugal international. “Hard work pays off. Myself and Marco pair with each other well.” Pinned Shakhtar put things in perspective Although Real Madrid will face Shakhtar Donetsk in Poland, the Ukrainian giants are understandably preoccupied after the latest wave of Russian aggression at the start of this week. Pinned Postecoglou presser Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has speaking ahead of the crucial Champions League clash with RB Leipzig on Tuesday. Pinned Messi to miss out PSG boss Christophe Galtier is slated to speak a little later, but Lionel Messi will be missing once more with a calf problem. The Argentine picked up the issue in Lisbon against Benfica last week and will now  miss the return clash having sat out the Ligue 1 draw with Reims over the weekend. No risks being taken ahead of this weekend’s Classique against bitter rivals Marseille reflected by Messi’s absence until fully recovered. Pinned Atleti unblock Griezmann situation This could potentially change things for Atletico Madrid and France international Antoine Griezmann who completes his return to the club on a permanent deal until 2026 from Barcelona. Until now, the 31-year-old’s minutes had been limited due to the structure of his previous deal so now he will be able to feature far more prominently. Pinned Chiesa comeback close Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri has given an update regarding Federico Chiesa’s fitness which offers hope that he could soon be back in fold, just not this week. Meanwhile, this is the squad the Italian tactician has gone for to face Maccabi Haifa on Tuesday. Pinned Sevilla squad This is the squad selected by Jorge Sampaoli as the Spaniards head to Germany with a drop into the UEFA Europa League already looking likely. Pinned Reyna update Dortmund boss Edin Terzic has suggested that USMNT star Gio Reyna could be considered for a squad role once more after missing out on Der Klassiker against Bayern Munich this past weekend. However, Marco Reus is not yet ready to be considered to make his potential return from injury against Sevilla on Tuesday. Trustbusters’ Metaverse Gambit – Reuters https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/trustbusters-metaverse-gambit-reuters/ NEW YORK, Oct 10 (Reuters Breakingviews) – Mark Zuckerberg isn’t the only one making risky gambits in the metaverse. On Friday, trustbusters at the Federal Trade Commission pared back their arguments against Meta Platforms’ (META.O) acquisition of virtual reality app maker Within. But even on the remaining, simplified claims, the FTC has a difficult needle to thread. The agency run by Lina Khan stepped back from initial arguments that Meta’s Beat Saber game competes directly against Within’s Supernatural fitness app. That was always an odd stretching of definitions that both limited the market to a thin slice of virtual reality and at the same time included wildly disparate apps. Now the FTC is claiming that the deal is anticompetitive because it eliminates the effect of future competition that Meta would introduce were it forced to develop, instead of acquire, its own fitness products. That resembles arguments against the 2015 merger of sterilization companies Steris and Synergy – a case the FTC lost. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com It’s also an uncomfortable about-face for enforcers. Typically, merging parties claim a hypothetical new entrant could shake things up. The FTC’s expansive antitrust push under Khan already faced challenges. Adopting arguments usually deployed by its foes could risk further blowback.
