The National Pork Producers Council and the American Farm Bureau Federation are appealing a lower court’s decision to throw out their lawsuit seeking to invalidate a 2018 ballot initiative passed by voters barring sales in California of pork, veal and eggs from animals whose confinement failed to meet minimum space requirements. The pork industry has defended the size of the cages used at pig farms as humane and necessary for animal safety. Animal rights groups have said some pork producers confine mother pigs in cages so small the animals cannot turn around for most of their lives. A legal doctrine called the “dormant” Commerce Clause bars states from passing laws discriminating against commerce in other states. Proposition 12 violates that doctrine, the pork producers argued in a legal filing, because it would increase costs for pig farmers, nearly all of whom are located outside California. While being the most populous U.S. state and an important market, California produces just 0.1% of the nation’s pork. “If you’re looking for an example of an unconstitutional law, this is it,” said Michael Formica, chief legal strategist for the pork producers. Proponents of the law disagree, saying California has the right to set standards for products sold to its consumers regardless of where these are produced. “There’s a long history of state laws that have to do with protecting public health, food safety and animal welfare,” said Josh Balk, vice president of farm animal protection at the Humane Society of the United States, which led the campaign to pass Proposition 12 and is a party in the case. “Producers have a choice if they want to sell products within the state’s borders that meet that standard.” The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a district court’s decision to throw out the lawsuit, finding no Commerce Clause violation. They wrote that a ruling endorsing the industry’s Commerce Clause position “could allow large, multi-state corporations to evade numerous state laws that focus on harms to their constituents, including those addressing wildlife trafficking, climate change, renewable energy, stolen property trafficking and labor abuses.” A group of 20 primarily Republican-governed states led by Indiana said in a brief that upholding Proposition 12 would undermine state sovereignty. Another group of 14 primarily Democratic-governed states and the District of Columbia, led by Illinois, said overturning it would undermine state authority to legislate. A ruling favoring pork producers could inspire more industry challenges to state regulations, according to Nandan Joshi, an attorney with the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen, which filed a brief supporting California. Pressed by animal welfare and consumer groups, many food and restaurant companies already have committed to phasing out small confinements for pigs and to buying or producing cage-free eggs. Proposition 12, passed with the support of about 63% of California voters, set the required space for breeding pigs, or sows, at 24 square feet (2.2 square meters). The current industry standard is between 14 and 20 square feet (1.3 to 1.9 square meters), according to a 2021 report from Dutch banking and financial services company Rabobank. The measure also increased the space required to house egg-laying hens and calves raised for veal. The Benton Franklin Health District reported that the concentration of the coronavirus in samples of untreated wastewater from Richland, Kennewick, Pasco and West Richland fell to the lowest measured since May. The new case rate for the two counties reported on Thursday was 84 new confirmed cases per 100,000 residents in one week. That is down from a new case rate of 114 a month ago. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention rated every county in Washington — including Benton and Franklin counties for a third week in a row — as having a “low” COVID-19 community level. The CDC bases its COVID-19 community level ratings not only on new case rates, but also hospital beds used by patients with COVID and hospital admissions for people with the disease. The number of newly hospitalized patients for COVID-19 treatment in the Tri-Cities and Prosser hospitals combined has dropped to 24 in the most recent weekly report from 30 a month ago. And in those same tourist-heavy regions, local governments could look to limit the number of short-term rentals to ensure that local residents have places to live.” Affordable housing advocates and municipal officials often tie the expansion of short-term rentals to rising rents and home prices but it is rare for a Federal Reserve top executive or the federal government to do so. The Federal Reserve is not part of the U.S. federal government, but Congress established the Federal Reserve banking system. Harker’s essay, “Unpacking Shelter Inflation,” dug into soaring home sale prices, which climbed 51 percent to $731,000 in the second quarter of 2022 in his native New Jersey, and he correlated much of it to “New Jersey’s high-median incomes and proximity to high-wage work.” Of course, the pandemic led to skyrocketing home prices in suburban areas. But then Harker added another factor, namely investors turning homes into short-term rentals, and constraining the supply of long-term rentals, as a contributor to the affordable housing shortage. “But other factors are less salutary” than high incomes and workers living near higher-paying jobs, Harder said. “Short-term rentals have gobbled up a significant portion of the housing supply, particularly at the Shore, for instance. Karr, who also serves as the chairperson of the UK Short-Term Accommodation Association, said it’s up to the vacation rental industry to show that there’s not a direct correlation between a lack of affordable housing and the rise of short-term rentals. Karr conceded, though, that the issue is complex, and there may be some impact, especially as untethered workers want more flexibility in their workplaces and homes. Gray said that the abundance of unused office space that the pandemic created provides an opportunity to refurbish these properties for affordable housing. “That’s something municipalities would be better using their time on than trying to make vacation rentals affordable rental units,” Gray said. Since the 18th CPC National Congress, in 2012, with the attention and concern of the CPC Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at the core, and with the strong support of Peng Liyuan, special envoy of the Spring Bud Project for promoting girls’ education, the project has conducted various activities to care for and support girls, and it has focused on girls’ education, safety and health. During the past decade, the project has supported 1.76 million girls, and it has provided one-on-one companionship services and personalized psychological counseling to 133,400 girls. After they receive support from the project, the Spring Bud girls never forget to give back to society. With love and various actions, the girls have demonstrated the Spring Bud spirit of “unremitting self-improvement, striving for excellence, developing stronger virtues and pursuing better lives.” Today, we introduce a new section, Spring Bud Blooms, to share stories about Spring Bud girls who have grown up and become contributing members of society, and to encourage society to care for the development of girls. Wang Fumei is one of them. Wang Fumei, a grassroots civil servant from Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, is a living example of the difference an education can make in a person’s life — and in the lives of that person’s family members. Wang is from an impoverished family, from Yizi Village, in Butuo, a county in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, in Sichuan. Tucked away deep in the mountains, the county was once one of the most-impoverished areas in China. Wang started to cook and look after her younger siblings when she was 6. She had to drop out of school at age 12 because her family couldn’t afford to pay her tuition. Many of the local residents believed it was useless for a girl to receive an education, because she would eventually get married and look after her house and children. After she talked with migrant workers who returned home to the village, Wang concluded an education was the only way she could leave the mountains and start a life different from that experienced by girls in the village. In August 1992, Wang told her parents she wanted to resume her education, after a three-year suspension, after she had learned the Spring Bud Project was being introduced in Butuo by the CCTF, to help girls return to school. However, her parents opposed her idea of returning to school. Wang Fumei (right) visits a family, in Butuo County, to learn about the family’s condition and basic needs.  Eventually, local village officials took Wang’s parents to Xixihe Central School, and they told her parents about the Spring Bud Project, the benefits of Wang attending school, and some of the inspirational stories of Spring Bud students. Wang’s mother finally agreed to allow Wang to return to school. In 1996, Wang was admitted to Sichuan Radio and Television Secondary Vocational School, where she studied accounting. Instead of finding a job in a large city after graduation, Wang chose to return to her village, so she could help with and participate in the development of her hometown. Wang became a civil servant, and she applied to fill grassroots posts in the most remote areas of Butuo. She worked in three townships before she was promoted to deputy head of Lada Township in June 2019. When she worked as deputy head of Lada, Wang was responsible for the poverty-alleviation efforts in Boshi, an impoverished Yi village located on the top of a mountain in Lada. Each cadre who held a deputy position in the township’s government shared responsibility for the poverty-alleviation efforts in an impoverished village. Wang Fumei (right) working in a field During the past three years, Wang has done her utmost to ensure roads and houses are built to improve the lives of residents in Boshi. She has also led residents in growing walnuts, traditional Chinese medical herbs and other cash crops, and she has helped dropouts return to school, organized technical training for villagers, and guided residents in forming good living habits and a healthy lifestyle. Thanks to her efforts, Boshi has taken on a new look, and the per-capita income of the residents has nearly doubled, compared with three years ago. Since she returned home, Wang has grasped every opportunity to encourage parents to let their daughters attend school. She has also encouraged young women to attend vocational training, as well as other forms of education. Wang’s inspirational story has persuaded parents to let their daughters attend school. Currently, all of the school-aged children in the village are enrolled in nearby schools, and parents of all ethnic groups support their children attending school. Wang has used her own story as an example whenever she has talked with villagers in an effort to curb excessive spending on dowries and extravagant weddings, and to encourage parents to abandon the outdated practice of arranging marriages for their children. World Mental Health Day Is An Opportunity For Us To Embrace Our Sense Of Community And Normalize Mental Health – Who.int https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/world-mental-health-day-is-an-opportunity-for-us-to-embrace-our-sense-of-community-and-normalize-mental-health-who-int/ In 2022, WHO published its seminal mental health work, the World Mental Health Report. The Report provides a blueprint for governments, academics, health professionals, civil society and others with an ambition to support the world in transforming mental health. One of the pervasive issues the report covers is stigma. Stigma, discrimination, and human rights violations against people with mental health conditions are widespread in communities and care systems everywhere. Today’s Lancet Commission on Ending Stigma and Discrimination in Mental Health is therefore timely and well received but how will it make a difference? Stigma wears many faces. We most commonly equate it with how we treat one other. However, that represents only part of the issue; personal shame, internalized through an individual’s mental health suffering, is a silent problem. We must normalize talking about mental health and its multitude of conditions because stigma is the chain onto which all mental health conditions link. One strength of WHO’s World Mental Health Report is that it includes diverse stories of people living with experience of mental health conditions. We are grateful to the more than 30 people who shared their stories of perseverance and survival. Their courage in telling their story is laudable and humbling; it is by listening to more and more experiences like theirs that we can learn how to offer better support and normalize conversations. The same is true of the recent WHO guidelines on mental health at work. With an estimated 12 billion workdays lost annually due to depression and anxiety, the new Guidelines recommend actions to tackle risks to mental health in the workplace such as heavy workloads, negative behaviours, and other factors that create distress at work. Each week brings a new challenge to our personal and collective mental health – conflict, disease and climate call for a new type of resilience in our mental health. Without expressing and understanding it, we will continue to paper the cracks. Reflecting on an ambition for this year’s World Mental Health Day, there are four priorities WHO would like to see acted upon: Fund mental health services – it is estimated that countries spend less than 2% of their health care budget on mental health services. With approximately one billion people living with a mental disorder in 2019, services are radically under resourced. Upskill ourselves and our care-givers with an understanding of mental health, understand fully personal experiences and how to provide support. The WHO Quality Rights Mental Health e-training is a great place to start. This training was designed to improve the quality of care in mental health and related services and to promote the rights of people with psychosocial, intellectual and cognitive disabilities. Prioritize mental health through our own self-care, analyzing workplace practices to ensure employees thrive and ensuring there is strong community care for mental health. Listen to the voices of people with lived experience of mental health conditions. Their experience will teach us how best to support and care for them. Mental health conditions are usually painful and unfortunately stigma only amplifies that distress. Let’s embrace the wise words of this year’s World Mental Health Day theme and make mental health and well-being for all a truly global priority.

ZeroAvia has announced that it has wholly acquired HyPoint, a fuel cell tech specialist, further solidifying its offering of H2 products. ZeroAvia is best known for the H2 powertrains it develops for aircraft, especially in the United Kingdom. The two companies have already been operating closely, particularly in the United Kingdom, over the last two years. The acquisition of HyPoint by ZeroAvia arrives on the heels of a previous partnership with the intention of developing hydrogen fuel cell stack tech with PowerCell Sweden, a Scandinavian energy company. As of the writing of this article, the terms of the agreement for ZeroAvia to acquire HyPoint had not been publicly disclosed. That said, according to ZeroAvia, it will now have access to the HyPoint high-temperature fuel cell tech. ZeroAvia described this as a “promising avenue” for boosting energy density and power output. The hydrogen fuel cell tech company is a “hugely important strategic step.” According to Val Miftakhov, ZeroAvia CEO and existing member of the advisory board at HyPoint, the deal between the companies is a “hugely important strategic step” for the consolidation of ZeroAvia’s position in the H2 powertrain development in aviation. “There are no other organisations with the breadth of expertise and world-leading intellectual property in hydrogen-electric aviation that we now have within the company,” added Miftakhov. The acquisition will bring the engineering team from HyPoint into ZeroAvia’s hydrogen power generation systems division. All of HyPoints 40 employees will be integrated with ZeroAvia throughout its UK sites in Gloucestershire and Kent. Alex Ivanenko, CEO at HyPoint, will become VTOL and new segment development general manager, according to a statement from ZeroAvia. Ivanenko will be particularly focused on rotorcraft and other areas beyond fixed-wing hydrogen fuel cell tech propulsion. White is a global project manager and traveled for the role before returning home to Yakima. Newhouse operates an 880-acre farm in the Yakima Valley and previously served as the director of the Washington State Department of Agriculture. He’s a former member of the state House. Another lawmaker in Congress, U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, a Democrat, faces a challenger in Pasco’s Tiffany Smiley, a Republican. Murray won 52.22% to Smiley’s 33.69% in the primary, according to statewide results. Murray has represented Washington in the Senate since 1993. Before that, she was a state senator and preschool teacher. Smiley has been a veterans advocate since 2005 and previously worked as a triage nurse. State races Voters selected Democrat incumbent Steve Hobbs and Pierce County Auditor Julie Anderson to advance in the contest for secretary of state, the lead role in the office responsible for supervising and certifying elections. Hobbs, who was appointed to the secretary of state position in 2021 to replace Kim Wyman, won 39.93% to Anderson’s 12.81% in the primary. State Rep. Brad Klippert, R-Kennewick, registered as a write-in candidate in the race after no Republicans survived the primary. Anderson is running as a nonpartisan candidate. Klippert, who ran for Newhouse’s congressional seat earlier this year but was eliminated in the primary, is a Benton County Sheriff’s deputy. He has represented District 8 in the state House since 2008. In legislative offices in District 13, Republican incumbents Sen. Judy Warnick of Moses Lake, Rep. Tom Dent of Moses Lake and Rep. Alex Ybarra of Quincy are running unopposed. District 14’s Rep. Chris Corry, a Republican from Yakima, faces Laurene Contreras of Toppenish, who stated no party preference. Corry won 68.02% to Contreras’ 31.34% in the primary. Also in District 14, Rep. Gina Mosbrucker, a Republican from Goldendale, faces Yakima business owner and attorney Liz Hallock, who stated no party preference. In the primary, Mosbrucker won 64.88% to Hallock’s 20.63%. Nikki Torres, a Republican from Pasco, and Lindsey Keesling, a Democrat from Yakima are vying for the District 15 seat held by Republican Sen. Jim Honeyford since 1999. Torres was the only candidate to appear on the primary ballot in August, earning 94.25% of the vote, but Keesling qualified for the general election in a write-in campaign. She won about 2.3% of the vote across the district and needed 1% to qualify. Republican Rep. Bruce Chandler of Granger faces no challengers for reelection to his District 15 seat, and Republican Bryan Sandlin of Zillah is the only candidate vying for the District 15 seat held by Rep. Jeremie Dufault of Selah. Dufault is not seeking reelection as new maps put his residence in District 14. County races In Yakima County’s District 1, incumbent Commissioner Amanda McKinney, a Republican, faces Democrat Angie Girard. Girard was a write-in candidate in the primary and won 13% of the vote. McKinney won 86.96% of the vote. McKinney’s office is the only one up for a full four-year term in 2022. In Districts 2 and 3, candidates are running for a two-year term to get the offices back to a staggered election cycle. Republican Kyle Curtis and Democrat Dulce Gutierrez are seeking the District 2 seat currently held by Republican Commissioner Ron Anderson, who is not running for reelection. Curtis won 54.83% in the primary to Gutierrez’s 33.78%. In District 3, Commissioner LaDon Linde, a Sunnyside Republican, faces one challenger, Steve Saunders, a Republican from Wapato. Linde held 56.35% to Saunders’ 43.65% in the primary. All other Yakima County offices are up for election in 2022. Yakima County Clerk office specialist and in-court clerk Billie Maggard faces Yakima County Clerk senior accountant Mischa Venables in the contest for county clerk. Both are Republicans. Maggard won 40.43% to Venables’ 31.81% in the primary, according to county results. Current Clerk Tracey Slagle did not seek reelection. The only other contested county race is that for coroner, where incumbent Jim Curtice faces deputy coroner Marshall Slight. Both are Republicans. Curtice won 79.83% of the primary vote to Slight’s 20.17%. Republican Jacob Tate is the sole candidate for assessor, with incumbent Dave Cook retiring. Ross, a Republican, is the sole candidate for Yakima County auditor. Prosecuting Attorney Joseph Brusic, Sheriff Robert Udell and Treasurer Ilene Thomson, all Republicans and unopposed, are running for reelection. Gary Hintze and Wes Gano are also vying for the nonpartisan District Court judge Position 1. Brian Sanderson, Donald Engel and Alfred G. Schweppe, all unopposed, are running for judge positions 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Advisory votes and special issues Two advisory votes are on the ballot, allowing voters across the state to advise the Legislature whether they favor a tax increase passed during the most recent legislative session. One asks about an increase in the tax on aircraft fuel, and the other asks about premiums imposed on transportation network companies to provide workers compensation to drivers. Yakima County voters will decide whether to renew a 25-cent per $1,000 property tax levy for emergency medical services. In Selah, voters will consider a request by the City Council to issue $12.7 million in bonds for a law and justice center that would house the police department and municipal court. The Union Gap School District and Mabton School District are requesting bonds for school construction and safety projects. A capital levy is on the ballot for East Valley School District voters to expand the Central Middle School commons.

On the other hand, the Spanish Ministry of Health established that all travelers from third countries (including the UK and US) must show a vaccination certificate -provided that the holder has completed primary vaccination within the last nine months or has received a booster vaccination- upon arrival in Spain. According to Euronews, health checks are being conducted at Spanish airports and ports to ensure passengers follow the rules. They are currently expected to remain valid until at least 15 November. Masks are no longer mandatory in public spaces including bars, cafes, cinemas and museums. Masks are still required on airplanes, buses, trains, metros and taxis. On ferries also if a 1.5-m distance can’t be maintained indoors. Travelers who do not possess a certificate equivalent to that of the EU must complete the Health Control Form. According to Euronews, UK citizens who have been vaccinated are able to travel to Spain, as long as they can prove they are not infected with virus. Unvaccinated UK citizens no longer need to fill out the Health Control Form, but they must show proof of recent recovery or a negative test. Why The ‘jaw-Dropping’ Poverty Health Gap Is About To Get Worse – The Telegraph https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/why-the-jaw-dropping-poverty-health-gap-is-about-to-get-worse-the-telegraph/ Prof Sir Michael Marmot, a globally lauded public health expert for the past half-century, chooses his words with precision – to avoid, he tells me, straying from the scientific evidence into politics. “It is important to stop at the limit of your expertise.” Yet, while he is unabashed in his praise of the NHS (“a brilliant system”), he believes that right now “it is in desperate, desperate straits”. Passionate words for one who generally prefers to avoid them, but justified, he would say, when 6.8 million are currently on NHS waiting lists and a survey last week (by Engage Britain) revealed that one in 10 of us goes private because of the delays in treatment or lack of access to them. And this is all before we go into a winter where fuel poverty and a cost of living crisis will reportedly see families forced to choose heating or eating. In a report published at the start of this month, coauthored with a respiratory consultant, Sir Michael cautioned that unheated homes will cause a wave of disease in young lungs, as well as damaging brain development in a way that could amount to “a significant humanitarian crisis”. That, too, was a chilling warning. We are meeting in a noisy café in a north London park where he often brings his grandchildren. With Liz Truss and her ally Thérèse Coffey still finding their feet as Prime Minister and Health Secretary, could the NHS crisis Sir Michael is describing be a make-or-break issue? “I’m not the person to ask,” the 77-year-old replies, falling back to his insistence on evidence. There is the faintest twinge of an Australian accent detectable in his calm, measured, slightly husky voice. His family moved from London to Down Under when he was a small child. He completed a good part of his education there before returning to the UK to begin his illustrious career. What he is keener to dwell on is his belief that the fate of the NHS is intricately bound up with the subject that he has made his own in a series of influential reports that bear his surname over the past 20 years: the relationship between health inequality and social injustice. “No one at present has got a clear answer as to what proportion of health inequalities between different social groups are due to lack of access to high-quality health care in the NHS,” he reports, “but there is a suggestion that it may be 20 per cent.” In other words, the failings of the NHS in its current depleted form may be particularly failing the bottom fifth of the population who already suffer the worst health outcomes of any group in the population, with life expectancies of 17 years less than those in the top percentage.  The causes are complex, he explains, but often arise because of the socio-economic circumstances in which those at the foot of the ladder live their lives, compared to those with more money and time to spend on essentials such as food and accommodation. Other alarming signs include the number of people with sufficient resources now choosing to pay for an appointment with a private GP because they have given up hope of ever seeing someone in person at their NHS surgery. “I really am fearful of what is happening,” says the man who in 2010 published a landmark government-commissioned review “Fair Society: Healthy Lives” that set six priorities (“The Marmot Six”). They included goals for early child development, education and working conditions for the reduction of health inequalities between rich and poor in this country.  “I believe that if one person opts out of the public health system, that affects everybody,” he says. “There are consequences when you abandon universality. Take the Finnish education system. There is no private education so everyone has a stake in having a public education system that is as good as it can be. In one of my reports, I wrote that just as an education system for the poor is a poor education system, so too a health system for the poor is a poor health system.” Prof Marmot trained as a doctor in Sydney. “I qualified and did various houseman posts. I was working in chest medicine when I saw the light about prevention.” As a junior doctor, he has said, he learnt “most of the things doctors treat could be seen as failed prevention. If you did not smoke, you would not get lung cancer. If you ate a healthy diet, you avoid a third of cancers”. It is a lesson he still follows in his private life. “I have a healthy diet, mostly vegetables and fish, but I am not ideological and eat some meat. My only vice is doing the sudoku in The New York Times on a daily basis.” It is in the public domain, however, that his early switch from treatment to prevention has had the most significant impact on the rest of us. He has chaired World Health Organisation commissions and served as president of the British Medical Association (2010-11) and the World Medical Association (2015-16).  In all these roles – including now as director of University College London’s Institute of Health Equity – he has explored the link between social injustice and poor health outcomes. Way back in 1978 he published his first paper on the “social gradient” in health.  “It showed that the lower the grade of employment, the lower the life expectancy,” he says. “People near the top have shorter life expectancy than those at the very top, and that runs all the way from top to bottom. People in the middle have about eight-and-a-half years shorter healthy life expectancy than those at the top.” How to close the gap has been the focus of his work. “Some people say, ‘there is nothing wrong with inequality, all societies have inequalities because the world rewards hard work’. My reply is: ‘Let’s get the set of social arrangements in place such that whole groups of people are not suffering ill health through no fault of their own.’” It is not always a demand that has won favour with the succession of health secretaries and public health ministers he has worked closely with since 1997 up to 2019. “Then it stopped,” he explains. “No minister has approached me since then.” In the days when he was a regular in Whitehall, he reports cabinet ministers telling him: “Oh, the poor have got nobody to blame but themselves. They don’t know how to eat properly. They don’t know how to cook. I could eat perfectly well on 50p a day.” His response to such remarks is best summed up, he says, by evidence quoted in a 2020 follow-up “progress report” he did on his original 2010 findings. “They came from the Food Foundation and showed that, for people to follow the healthy eating guidance from the NHS, those in the bottom 10 per cent of household income would have to spend 74 per cent of their income on food, and that’s before rent and heating. So don’t blame people’s ignorance. Blame their poverty.” If No 10 called him for advice on tackling the 60 per cent of the population who are, according to some estimates, facing fuel poverty and all the negative health consequences that will follow, what would he tell them to do? “Put equity of health and well-being at the heart of all policy,” he replies without hesitation. “I wouldn’t want to prioritise a particular level of taxation. That’s a downstream discussion, it seems to me.” When it comes to government financial support to protect the health and well-being of society during the current crisis, would he use universal measures such as the price freeze that has been announced, or something more targeted for those at the lower end of his social gradient? “Well, if we take the 60 per cent facing fuel poverty, we don’t necessarily want to give support to the top 40 per cent. Means-testing is a very important debate. On one side, why give benefits to people who don’t need them? On the other – and I look at all this from the impact-on-health point of view, not ideology – given the social gradient, if you target only the worst off, you risk missing those above the threshold. The argument is for more universality.” In the midst of what some are already describing as the worst crisis since the Second World War, why prioritise health and well-being rather than, say, growing the economy? “Because it builds a better society. Health equity has stopped improving here. For 100 years, life expectancy was going up by about one extra year every four years. In 2010-11 the curve flattened. Health inequalities increased and, for the poorest people, it has gone down by a year, a year and half in the north west of England. In a rich, civilised country, that is jaw-dropping.” The pandemic, he believes, was not a case of “all in it together” but instead exposed those underlying inequalities in society. “It amplified them. We saw that the social gradient in Covid deaths looked very similar to the social gradient in all mortality, but slightly steeper.” Now the economic crisis threatens to do the same. Yet he remains hopeful. He was recently in Luton, which has just become a “Marmot Town”, which means the local authority and other agencies have adopted the “Marmot Six” principles. Coventry, Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire, Cumbria and Gateshead have already done something similar. “The more who share my hope, the greater chance we have of improvement.”

It was the start of a Pro Day that put Kentucky’s length, athleticism and skill on full display in the two-plus-hour event that included physical testing, individual work and scrimmaging in front of several dozen scouts — multiple for every team. Familiar faces included Chuck Hayes (Houston Rockets), Tony Delk (Dallas Mavericks), Tayshaun Prince (Memphis Grizzlies) and Brandon Weems (Cleveland Cavaliers), all in NBA roles scouting their former school’s best talent. And there was plenty of it from top to bottom. Let’s start with the one holdout, CJ Fredrick, who turned his ankle Saturday and was unable to participate with such a quick turnaround. “Unbelievable year and a half to get to this point, down to 8% body fat. Confident,” Calipari said of the sharpshooting guard. He added that Fredrick wants to participate in the team’s scrimmage on Monday and could if he really wanted to, but the UK head coach is holding him out for precautionary reasons. No reason to rush back just for the sake of participating, but it was made very clear that it’s nothing serious and he will not miss any real time leading up to the season. The event started with some stretching and testing, namely the vertical leap. Collins, as expected, was the star of the show. Jacob Toppin (45 inches), Kareem Watkins (43 inches) Cason Wallace (42 inches), Adou Thiero (41 inches) and Chris Livingston (40 inches) weren’t far behind. Thiero cupped the top of the measuring stick twice and needed the bar to be raised on both jumps, scary to think about considering he’s 6-foot-6 and growing — he told KSR this summer he could eventually hit the 6-10 mark. As for Collins and Toppin, the entire gym stopped in its tracks to marvel at each leap, truly must-see athletes. Freaky alien stuff from the forward duo. From there, full-court layups to get warmed up, followed by full-court 2-on-1 and 2-on-2. Cason Wallace was a standout defensively, jumping the passing line for a steal while trying to slow down a 2-on-1 in transition. Jacob Toppin knocked down a filthy hesitation pull-up jumper in the full-court 2-on-2s and followed it up with an alley-oop slam where his head was clear above the rim. It was also our first viewing of Ugonna Kingsley Onyenso in a competitive setting, where he ran the floor well and was fluid in his movements. The 6-foot-11 center also showed off a smooth shooting stroke both in the 2-on-1 and 2-on-2 period before really ramping things up in the individual shooting drills that followed. It’s a fundamentally sound shot that falls at a high rate in catch-and-shoot situations. That would continue in the five-on-five scrimmages a bit later. Chris Livingston also did some good things on both ends, namely a swatted ball into the Joe Craft Facility wall on a failed alley-oop lob attempt. His defensive versatility is intriguing. That rolled into a brief 4-on-4 period, one that saw a primary ball-handler bring the ball up the floor into live action. Sahvir Wheeler, Cason Wallace, Antonio Reeves and Chris Livingston split reps as the lead guard in this drill. Then, the good stuff: 5-on-5 live scrimmages — the longest period of the day, split in two with a shooting drill serving as a makeshift halftime. The lineups were split into two core groups: Sahvir Wheeler, Antonio Reeves, Jacob Toppin, Lance Ware and Ugonna Onyenso Cason Wallace, Adou Thiero, Chris Livingston, Daimion Collins and Oscar Tshiebwe Wallace got things rolling with a pretty lob to Tshiebwe for a soft finish inside in front of Onyenso., followed by a catch-and-shoot mid-range jumper for Tshiebwe. Like a free safety waiting to pounce on a deep ball, Wallace then snatched back-to-back passes for steals, one leading to a breakaway dunk. Tshiebwe then caught Onyenso on an and-one putback lay-in, followed by a response on the other end from Onyenso: a pivot pull-up from the right elbow right in Tshiebwe’s face. It was a sequence that showed the value they bring to the table for each other, brute strength and physicality for Tshiebwe and length for Onyenso. The players need one another, a wildly crucial tool for their development. The deep balls started flying with Jacob Toppin and Sahvir Wheeler knocking down back-to-back 3-point baskets from the left wing, followed by Adou Thiero responding on the other end with a three from the right wing. Then came the silly stuff from Daimion Collins, who grabbed a ball from mid-air — think it was a lob, but maybe a shot? — with his Inspector Gadget arms for the block/steal, followed by a putback dunk on the other end. A few possessions later, he drilled a pull-up hesitation mid-range jumper, a fairly ridiculous sequence that led me to write “Daimion Collins is a clear first-round pick” in my notes. Another thing to keep in mind? Eight made free throws for Collins on eight attempts. He drew fouls and converted. Blown whistle, Calipari steps in on the other end of the floor. It came after a pass from Antonio Reeves, swinging it on the perimeter. “You’ve scored 1,500 points in your career. Shoot the ball,” he shouted. The Illinois State transfer’s hesitancy to launch the rock transitioned into an iso dribble straight out of an BallIsLife mixtape to set up a stepback corner three that fell just short. He followed it up with a catch-and-shoot three from the right wing. To put it simply, Reeves has got a lot of s*** to his game, a deep bag of tricks he’ll steadily unpack throughout his debut season. Oh, how about more Oscar vs. Ugo action? The center duo followed it up with another mini run of their own, trading off mid-range jumpers showing off their face-up games. Tshiebwe then went straight through Onyenso’s chest and scored over his outstretched arms that combine for a 7-foot-4 wingspan. The veteran drew a foul on the freshman shortly after, who scored on a fancy up-and-under through contact for his first inside bucket of the day shortly after. Again, absolutely incredible for his development having a player like Tshiebwe to learn from on and off the floor. It’s not every day you get a Consensus National Player of the Year to serve as your teacher, mentor and development coach. A few positional notes to slide in, as well: Cason Wallace spent the entire 5-on-5 session as the lead point guard against Sahvir Wheeler, a head-to-head battle. Elsewhere, Chris Livingston spent significant time working as a fourth guard in a small-ball four role, a position he played at Oak Hill running the dribble-drive. He has true two-through-four positional versatility, and that was shown yet again in the live periods in front of NBA scouts. We also got the public debut of the Helmet Award, with players who dunk on their teammates earning the honor of placing a UK Football helmet on the heads of their poor poster victims. Today’s award recipients? Cason Wallace on a dunk on Jacob Toppin and Lance Ware on a dunk on Lance Ware. Chris Livingston also punched one near Toppin that was voted a non-poster, but still deserving of praise. Antonio Reeves was also a clear standout from the left wing, while Sahvir Wheeler also impressed on the right wing. Then to close out the evening, a live 5-on-5 period featuring a jump ball, referees and a kept score — the whole nine yards. ALPENA — Northeast Michigan counties are better prepared for large-scale emergencies thanks to equipment designed to connect people to information they need to save life and property. Tablets, laptops, large-screen televisions, and a camera with a mind of its own fill a new Emergency Operations Center in Presque Isle County, the equipment added this summer courtesy of a federal Homeland Security Planning Board grant. Other counties in the area received the same or similar equipment, said Sarah Melching, Presque Isle County emergency management coordinator. The Emergency Operations Center, established this summer in a little-used room across from the Commissioners Room in the county courthouse, offers workspace for about six busy people. Large counties would need much more space, but emergencies in rural areas mean emergency workers busy in the field, with few people free to work in a central communications hub, Melching said. Still, she said, the new space and supplies mean an added degree of safety for residents. Large emergencies happen rarely in small counties, but, when they do, the right technology and a place to use it could prove crucial, she said. “It’s starting to feel like we’re more equipped,” Melching said. “If anything should happen, we’ve got everything at our fingertips.” An Emergency Operation Center provides a centralized location where leaders within the emergency response web coordinate their response to a disaster or emergency. In Alpena County, representatives of numerous agencies used the county’s EOC as a home base from which to manage the county’s response during early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Smaller counties don’t always have access to funding to make such a space available, but the Homeland Security grant equipment helped bridge that gap, Melching said. New electronic tablets give grab-and-go ease for people in charge of damage assessment in the wake of a natural disaster. High-powered laptops can connect to giant TV screens at either end of the room, any of the screens ready to track weather patterns or wrangle data that responders can use to best protect residents from large human- or nature-caused threats. At the center of the room, an Owl — a narrow, foot-tall tower with a curved glass top, reminiscent of an oversized room freshener — houses a specialty camera that, during meetings, turns of its own accord from speaker to speaker, providing an upgraded videoconference experience that lets participants talk face-to-face, albeit through a screen. Should more people need to meet to coordinate the county’s response, the equipment — including a locking recharging storage cart — can move to the larger meeting room across the hallway, Melching said. The county might use the room — stocked with regional maps, bins of clipboards, and stacks of coffee cups — during an extensive missing person search, if an active shooter attacks, or when flood or fire threatens. It might provide space for police heads, public relations officials, elected leaders, utilities experts, or Red Cross representatives. When not needed for emergency response, Melching will use the room for training. People in charge of responding to emergencies can’t wait until the time arrives to learn how to use the equipment and how to best communicate with it, Melching said. Several years ago, Melching created a new logo for the county’s emergency management team, hoping to make the office and its services more visible to the community. She encourages residents to sign up for Code RED, a service that alerts residents to urgent matters like evacuation notices, road closures, missing persons, lockdowns, or water boil orders. Now, she hopes the new equipment in Alpena-area counties prompts residents to ask questions about what they can do to better prepare themselves and their families for emergencies. Jury Trial Scheduled In Philomath Methane Fiasco – Corvallis Gazette-Times https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/jury-trial-scheduled-in-philomath-methane-fiasco-corvallis-gazette-times/ The developer of an embattled Philomath housing subdivision is taking his former environmental consultant to court for allegedly failing to inform him about methane gas at the site. Millpond Crossing, named for the 30-acre site’s sawmill history with two large log ponds, starts at the corner of Chapel Drive and South 15th Street. Construction has been delayed there since methane gas was discovered. Decaying wood debris can generate methane gas. Levi Miller of Pierce County, Washington and his company MPC Builders LLC bought the property in February 2018, finalizing the sale in September that year. In a $9.9 million lawsuit filed in Benton County in May, Miller claims  Washington-based Aerotech Environmental Consulting Inc. didn’t inform him about the potential risk of methane and other biogases. A closer look at the skate park facility in Philomath. Andy Cripe, Mid-Valley Media In a response filed with the court, Aerotech denies Miller’s allegations and requests the case be dismissed. Specifically, Aerotech claims its contract with MPC Builders didn’t require identifying landfill gas or recommendations for how to go about investigating methane and its remediation. A 12-person jury trial has been scheduled to start Nov. 27, 2023 and is set run for three weeks in Benton County Circuit Court. Philomath official, community concerned In September, Philomath City Council member Catherine Biscoe raised concerns about Millpond Crossing. She hoped to share a report on the topic at a council meeting but didn’t get the chance. However, Biscoe’s report was included in the meeting’s materials. The development was also the focus of numerous comments from the public at that meeting. Recent reports of possible groundwater contamination and hydrogen sulfide readings are clearly documented in a June report from PBS Engineering and Environmental Inc., the developer’s new environmental consultant, Biscoe said. Biscoe’s report includes concerns about procedural irregularities as well as issues of safety, health and financial protections for the homeowners in Millpond Crossing. At the September meeting, City Attorney Jim Brewer suggested an executive session on the matter, saying litigation is likely to be filed and the city’s role in that is not yet clear. He added that more than one closed session on the topic may be necessary. Risks of building on a brownfield Meanwhile, the state warned the project’s first residents to forgo power tools, fire pits and barbecues — anything that could spark an explosion. No methane has been found in or under any homes, the developer previously has said.  Because the environmental consultant had identified some contaminants, although methane gas wasn’t among them, Miller volunteered in October 2018 to clean up the site under a program the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality offers to elicit cooperation with property owners. Then DEQ required Miller to look for methane specifically, and in June 2020 and April 2021 sampling at the property detected methane in shallow soil in several places. Methane is flammable and in confined spaces can cause explosions or displace oxygen. In submitting to DEQ oversight, the developer acknowledged that he did his due diligence and was “aware its housing complex would be built on a brownfield and abandoned former mill site,” according to an email Miller’s Portland-based attorney, Carson Bowler, sent to DEQ. A DEQ document states the log ponds of the former mill site were filled with wood waste, construction debris and other hazardous substances in the ’80s. A court document adds old oil filters, batteries, waste oils and plastics to the ponds’ contents. Methane is not the only hazard to address. In May 2018, Aerotech found contaminants in the area of the filled log ponds, including diesel and oil. It also found such metals as arsenic, barium, chromium, cadmium, lead, mercury, selenium and silver. Initially aware of only the metals and the petroleum contamination, Miller moved forward with his plans, entering the DEQ’s Voluntary Cleanup Program, the developer said in his lawsuit against Aerotech, which alleges negligence and breach of contract. Adjustments and planning delays Among the actions taken by the developer: Venting systems and methane alarms were installed in each home, according to DEQ, which also urged the developer to seal underground electrical conduits leading to enclosed spaces to alleviate concerns about methane buildup within utility infrastructure. “No homeowner has reported any alarms being triggered or issues with other installed mitigation measures,” Bowler said in a Sept. 16 email. Costly environmental mitigation measures and planning changes have put Millpond behind by around eight months, Bowler said in his email. He acknowledged that regular methane monitoring at the site hasn’t happened since February, citing an impending state brownfield loan that is needed to pay for additional field work. A major plan modification sought by Millpond would have allowed the developer to refinance the project and get additional capital through a new construction loan, had it happened in a timely fashion, Bowler said. Proceeding with new home construction would in turn cover more environmental work at the site. Delayed funding significantly impacted work at the site, including contaminant testing and monitoring, according to Bowler, who said because of delays with DEQ, new home construction and funding, Millpond has had no source of revenue since February. Bowler added that despite the challenges, the developer and its new environmental consultant have continued carrying out a long list of work at the site. But the consultant isn’t in a position to front the money for subcontractor field work, including methane monitoring. “The current status of the project is not a result of Millpond’s recalcitrance, but rather a byproduct of not being able to secure funding, which is now in the final stages of being resolved,” Bowler said via email.   Related stories: Cody Mann covers Benton County and the cities of Corvallis and Philomath. Jensen, second from left, with his staff in Batumi, Georgia (Danica) Published Oct 9, 2022 10:53 PM by Tony Munoz (Article originally published in July/Aug 2022 edition.) “At the start of Danica Crewing Specialists, our primary base of mariners were Ukrainians, and our main office was in Ukraine,” says Henrik Jensen, Founder & Managing Director. “While our headquarters are in Hamburg, our biggest crewing office was in Odesa. Because of this terrible situation with the war in Ukraine, we have now opened an operational office in Limassol to act as a regional coordination center.” The Russian invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022 when Putin announced his intention to  demilitarize and “denazify” Ukraine. Immediately after the announcement, Russia launched missile and air strikes across Ukraine including on the capital of Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy enacted martial law and a general mobilization of all male Ukrainian citizens between the ages of 18 and 60 and banned them from leaving the country.    The invasion has displaced almost 13 million Ukrainians with more than six million fleeing the country and another seven million leaving their homes and seeking refuge elsewhere. It also further aggravated a growing shortage of seafarers worldwide that had begun two years earlier with the onset of COVID-19. Ukraine accounts for roughly 77,000 seafarers – 47,000 officers and 30,000 ratings. Russian and Ukrainian mariners together account for about 14 percent of officers and 15 percent of ratings, a significant proportion of the world’s approximately two million seafarers. Crewing ships had already been a challenging situation because of COVID-19 as crews were subject to travel restrictions and were often quarantined onboard for months beyond IMO statutory limits. “Any industry where 15 percent of the workforce more or less falls out will have a problem,” says Jensen. “Even owners not using Eastern European crew will feel a knock-on effect as owners traditionally using Ukrainian and Russian crew turn to other nationalities.” There are other problems as well. The Russian invasion of Ukraine is overwhelming shipping companies’ ability to hire seafarers. Since the war began it’s become difficult for Russians to obtain travel visas and get paid due to Russian bank sanctions, and it’s problematic to mix Russian and Ukrainian crews. Several shipping companies have declined to hire Russian seafarers entirely. The stress on Ukrainian mariners has been tremendous because many of their families have fled the country or been forced to relocate. Many do not want to return to Ukraine and have extended onboard contracts. Ukrainian national marine licenses have been extended, but no new licenses are being issued, which is affecting job opportunities for Ukrainians. In the meantime, the Ukrainian maritime authorities have established a system where Ukrainian seafarers can now undertake online the necessary courses and exams to renew their certificates when their five-year cycle expires. In addition, the Polish maritime administration has established a system for extending Ukrainian certificates. “When the war broke out, about 60 percent of Ukrainian seafarers were onboard,” Jensen explains. “A few of them wanted to return home immediately when the war started to join the army or be with their families, but the majority stayed onboard, and when their tenure came to an end they asked to stay longer. In general, shipping companies were able to cope, including Danica. However, in the past few months the situation has changed. Many of the Ukrainian seafarers’ families have been able to leave the country and are now in the E.U. As soon as their families are out of Ukraine, the seafarers onboard want to join them. This is of course understandable, but now it creates a shortage of relievers while other relievers are still not able to leave Ukraine.” With the growing shortage of professional mariners, salaries for onboard personnel are rising quickly, and there are no quick solutions due to the professional licenses required to meet the IMO’s STCW certifications along with logging verifiable time at sea. A Different Kind of Company “Our ambition is to be the crewing partner for demanding shipping companies,” says Jensen, “those with high standards and high expectations, and to deliver crews who can fulfill our clients’ business goals.” To do so, the company employs one of the strictest screening procedures in the business, especially for senior officers, and offers leadership training courses for officers and safety training courses for ratings. It screens candidate backgrounds, authenticates licenses and verifies sea service including navigational skills and knowledge. It charts the candidate’s behavior and ability to communicate and interact with other crew members, which is critical for successful ship operations. Asked if Danica is the world’s biggest crew supply company, he replies, “No, and we will not be. There are not enough crews who can pass our strict pre-employment screening process.” Jensen grew up in a seafaring family in Denmark. Both of his grandfathers were professional mariners, and his uncle was a marine pilot. During summer vacations from school, he would join his uncle on pilotage voyages in the Denmark fjords and deep-sea waters, which sparked his interest in becoming a deck officer and ship’s captain. He served as an officer on container ships, bulk carriers and ferries and eventually took command of seismic vessels. When not sailing, he earned advanced degrees in business organization and human resource management. Eventually, he came ashore with the opportunity to work as a safety superintendent and crewing officer for the seismic company. He went to Greece to oversee operations for a Danish-Greek ferry and soon became the fleet director and managing director for another Danish ferry company. He spent nine years with Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement in Germany, rising to Group HR-Marine Manning Director. In 2009 he cofounded Nordic Hamburg Shipmanagement and in 2013 founded Danica Crewing Specialists. His years of hands-on experience managing crews and fleets made it clear that there was a need for quality recruitment and manning services, for a company that was independently owned and acted entirely on behalf of its customers. “We are not a ship manager,” Jensen emphasizes. “Our focus is to be the HR (human resources) partner for our clients, who are typically shipowning companies with their own in-house technical management but with a fleet size that does not have the economies of scale to have their own recruitment offices, screening, logistics and training. We are their extended arm or department.” Today, the company has eight offices in six countries and a network of more than 350,000 officers and ratings. It has long been recruiting in the Philippines, India and Indonesia. While looking to open more offices, the pandemic put further expansion plans on hold. But it did open an office in Batumi, Georgia recently and – in addition to transferring much of the Odesa operation to Limassol – has partnered with a crewing company in the Philippines.   Blue Water Crisis When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, more than 2,000 seafarers were stranded on 94 vessels at Ukrainian ports. The IMO and several governments insisted that the Russian Federation honor the “blue safe maritime corridor” in the high-risk areas of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Russia deferred, saying it would establish a humanitarian corridor once ships were outside Ukraine’s territorial waters. Today, Ukrainian ports are at MARSEC (maritime security) level 3, which means the ports will remain closed for entry and exit or that ships sail at their own peril. Sea mines have been laid at port approaches and ports blocked with sunken barges and cranes. Many ships in the region no longer have sufficient crew onboard to sail. “We still have about 1,000 Ukrainians, mainly senior officers, deployed now,” Jensen says. “There are still Danica employees and crew in distress in Ukraine, many of whom have lost their properties and possessions. Meanwhile, our company supports these employees and their families, even those who have escaped to other countries.” While the Russians have signed an accord to allow grain ships to sail from Ukraine and through the Black Sea, there is massive congestion of vessels near Sulina and Bystre, south of Snake Island, trying to transit through Romania to the Danube. Officials estimate it will take months to get ships moving again. Meanwhile, IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim and international aid organizations have been trying to reprovision ships, which need vital supplies for stranded seafarers in the Black Sea region. A Time of Courage There are currently around 75,000 commercial ships in the world trading fleet totaling 2,095 million deadweight tons, which has doubled since 2007. By 2025, the world fleet will exceed 80,000 ships, and the demand for licensed mariners will continue to increase. Added to the war in Ukraine and the ongoing pandemic, that presents a real challenge for companies like Danica. Where will the seafarers come from? “That’s a very valid question,” he says, “and it worries me a lot. Seafaring has been an attractive career for decades in the main sourcing countries. A career at sea offers challenging jobs, great responsibility, and a steady and relatively high income – indeed for senior ranks in some countries even an extremely high salary. People have been coming through,” said Brown, Founder of We Are the Help.  His nearly 90,000 Instagram followers have helped raise $10,000 for 100 Florida families.    “One family, Bree and Marcus Smith stopped by from Fort Myers, Florida. They were heading to El Paso, and they were able to stop inside here and get some clothes. That’s the family we were able to bless with $500,” said Brown.  Bree and Marcus Smith spoke to NBC5 about the generosity they experienced on their drive from Florida to Texas, where they’re now staying with family friends.   Local The latest news from around North Texas. “That was a blessing. And as it turns out, it’s not all marketing mumbo-jumbo. A 2011 study published in Biomedical Research reported that lion’s mane improved cognition and memory in mice, and contributed to a reduction in anxiety and irritability. Mushrooms are also high in beta-glucan, a compound that acts as both an antioxidant and probiotic (per BBC Good Food). By activating the immune system, beta-glucan increases the body’s ability to ward off infection and has also been shown to slow and even stop tumor growth. It also feeds the good bacteria in the stomach, lending to a healthy gut. Mushrooms may also be great for heart health, according to a 2001 study published in Experimental Biology and Medicine. In this case, shitake mushrooms lowered cholesterol in mice. But in another 1987 study published in the Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology, they found that mushrooms helped prevent the buildup of arterial plaque and promote healthy circulation in rats.

Facing elimination in Game 3 of their National League wild card series, the Mets manager ordered umpires to check Musgrove, the San Diego Padres right-hander who’d shut them out for five dominant innings, for foreign substances on his face and equipment. It is a rare act for a manager – rarer still in an era umpires check pitchers’ hands regularly after innings – and took on an air of desperation with the Mets trailing by four runs and their season on life support. Before the bottom of the sixth could begin, the umpiring crew scoured Musgrove’s face, ears and equipment for sticky substances and found nothing. Which is exactly what the Mets got off Musgrove. Musgrove took a perfect game into the fifth inning and pitched seven shutout innings, quieting a Citi Field crowd and sending the faithful home for the winter as San Diego eliminated the Mets, 6-0, on Sunday night. The Padres will advance to the NL Division Series against the Dodgers, as they did in 2020 before succumbing to L.A. in the bubble-contested playoffs that year. The Mets, who won 101 games but lost the NL East title in the season’s waning days, will go home pondering how to improve on a club that sported a franchise-record payroll that approached $290 million. They didn’t go down swinging but rather by commissioning a search party to undress Musgrove, Showalter either believing Musgrove’s elevated spin rate and dominance resulted from foreign substance use – or at least wanting to plant that thought in the Padre’s head. Either way, he was wrong on both fronts. Umpiring crew chief Alfonso Marquez conducted a relatively intimate check of Musgrove’s face and ears as the pitcher maintained a poker face. His resentment toward Showalter is rooted in decades of baseball protocol, in which demanding a substance check is considered questionable gamesmanship, unless a team has been tipped to a player’s abuse. The practice did not gain steam even as the use of so-called “sticky stuff” grew in prevalence and aided in pitchers’ spin rate, velocity and movement. When Major League Baseball announced that in June 2021 it would begin checking pitchers after at least their first inning of work, spin rates declined across the game. And just one manager – then-Phillies skipper Joe Girardi – demanded an extra on-field check when he asked umps to check then-Nationals starter Max Scherzer, who grew indignant at Girardi after umps ran their hands through his thinning mane. Showalter seemed to telegraph his intentions, noting in a pregame production meeting with ESPN’s broadcast crew that Musgrove’s spin rates had increased. His numbers in Sunday’s Game 3 were elevated, as well, although possibly not beyond what the adrenaline of a high-stakes game might produce. Showalter said he felt “kind of bad about” casting aspersions on Musgrove, but that the club was “privy” to spiking spin rate averages and that he’s “charged with doing what’s best for the New York Mets. If it makes me look however it makes me look, I’m going to do it every time and live with the consequences.” Said Padres manager Bob Melvin: “Joe Musgrove is a man of character. Questioning his character is what bothers me. The reception he got after that was not warranted. I just want everybody to know he’s a high-character individual.” Showalter should have known he wasn’t checking a young buck; Musgrove pitched the lone no-hitter in Padres history and appeared in far higher-stakes games, most notably earning the win in relief in Game 5 of the 2017 World Series, a 13-12 thriller that keyed the Houston Astros’ seven-game conquest of the Dodgers. Sunday night, Musgrove came up even cleaner and now, the San Diego native will be slated to start a Game 4 at Petco Park against the Dodgers. In the year since, Meta has spent billions of dollars and assigned thousands of employees to make Mr. Zuckerberg’s dream feasible. But Meta’s metaverse efforts have had a rocky start. The company’s flagship virtual-reality game, Horizon Worlds, remains buggy and unpopular, leading Meta to put in place a “quality lockdown” for the rest of the year while it retools the app. Some Meta employees have complained about frequent strategy shifts that seem tied to Mr. Zuckerberg’s whims rather than a cohesive plan. And Meta executives have butted heads over the company’s metaverse strategy, with one senior leader complaining that the amount of money the company had spent on unproven projects made him “sick to my stomach.” The company’s struggle to reshape the business was described in interviews with more than a dozen current and former Meta employees and internal communications obtained by The New York Times. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about internal matters. The stakes are high for the company, which is racing to transform itself to make up for declines in other parts of its business. TikTok is siphoning younger users away from Facebook and Instagram, Meta’s two big moneymakers, and Apple made privacy changes to its mobile operating system that have cost Meta billions of dollars in advertising revenue. The company’s stock price has tumbled nearly 60 percent in the past year — a reflection not just of broader market turbulence, but of some investors’ skepticism that the metaverse will be highly lucrative anytime soon. In late September, the company announced that it would freeze most hiring, and Mr. Zuckerberg has warned employees that layoffs may be coming. “The pressures Meta’s business is facing in 2022 are acute, significant and not metaverse-related,” said Matthew Ball, an investor and metaverse expert whose advice Mr. Zuckerberg has sought. “And there is a risk that almost everything Mark has outlined about the metaverse is right, except the timing is farther out than he imagined.” What Is the Metaverse, and Why Does It Matter? Card 1 of 5 The origins. The word “metaverse” describes a fully realized digital world that exists beyond the one in which we live. It was coined by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 novel “Snow Crash,” and the concept was further explored by Ernest Cline in his novel “Ready Player One.” The future. Many people in tech believe the metaverse will herald an era in which our virtual lives will play as important a role as our physical realities. Some experts warn that it could still turn out to be a fad or even dangerous. In a statement, Andy Stone, a Meta spokesman, said the company believed it was still on the right path. “Being a cynic about new and innovative technology is easy,” Mr. Stone said. “Actually building it is a lot harder — but that’s what we’re doing because we believe the metaverse is the future of computing.” Mr. Zuckerberg successfully overhauled his company a decade ago, getting it to focus on how its products worked on smartphones instead of desktops. He signaled a similar shift last year, saying that investing in the metaverse would allow Meta to make the leap from one technological era to the next. There are some signs that Meta’s bet has put it ahead of competitors. The company’s consumer V.R. headset, the Quest 2, is the most popular V.R. headset on the market with more than 15 million sold, according to outside estimates. Its Oculus V.R. app — which has since been rebranded Meta Quest — has been installed over 21 million times on iOS and Android devices, according to an estimate by Sensor Tower, an app analytics firm. But Meta’s future success depends on the company’s ability to bring virtual and augmented reality tools to far more people. Meta said in February that its Horizon Worlds game had grown to roughly 300,000 monthly active users — an increase from a few months earlier, but minuscule in comparison with Facebook’s more than 2.9 billion monthly active users. The company declined to provide more up-to-date figures for Horizon Worlds. Adding to Meta’s woes is that U.S. regulators appear determined to prevent the company from acquiring its way to success, as it did by buying Instagram and WhatsApp. In July, the Federal Trade Commission sued Meta to block it from acquiring Within, the maker of a popular V.R. fitness app. Meta is fighting the agency’s lawsuit, which it has called “wrong on the facts and the law.” Image Mr. Zuckerberg, right, fencing with an Olympic gold medal fencer in the metaverse. He has made himself the face of the company’s metaverse push.Credit…Facebook, via Reuters Mr. Zuckerberg, determined to recast his public image after years in the limelight for unpopular decisions about political speech on Facebook, has surprised some employees by making himself the innovator face of the company’s metaverse push. Demonstrations and mock-ups of Meta’s latest metaverse technologies feature footage of Mr. Zuckerberg performing V.R. versions of his hobbies, including fencing and a surfing-like watersport called hydrofoiling. The chief executive recently went on Joe Rogan’s podcast, where he told the popular comedian that building an immersive metaverse was his “holy grail.” What we consider before using anonymous sources. Do the sources know the information? What’s their motivation for telling us? Have they proved reliable in the past? Can we corroborate the information? Even with these questions satisfied, The Times uses anonymous sources as a last resort. The reporter and at least one editor know the identity of the source. His involvement has backfired at times. In August, Mr. Zuckerberg posted a screenshot of his Horizon Worlds avatar on his Facebook page, along with an announcement that the app was expanding into France and Spain. But the avatar’s flat, cartoonish look was roundly mocked. (One commenter compared it to “a 2002 Nintendo GameCube release.”) After that response, Mr. Zuckerberg and other executives directed employees to give priority to improving the appearance of avatars, according to two employees. Mr. Stone, the Facebook spokesman, characterized Mr. Zuckerberg’s reaction to the avatar backlash as “frustrated,” but did not provide additional details. A new version of Mr. Zuckerberg’s digital appearance was fast-tracked, the two employees said, along with updates to other Horizon Worlds avatars that had been in the works. Four days after Mr. Zuckerberg’s original post, he shared that upgraded digital version of himself, conceding that his first avatar was “pretty basic” while the “graphics in Horizon are capable of much more.” One Meta graphic artist claimed in a LinkedIn post, which has since been deleted, that he and his team had designed roughly 40 versions of Mr. Zuckerberg’s face over a four-week period before a final version was approved. Image In a post on his Facebook account, Mr. Zuckerberg said that the graphics on the Horizon World app are “capable of much more,” after criticism of an earlier avatar of himself.Credit…Meta Mr. Zuckerberg’s zeal for the metaverse has been met with skepticism by some Meta employees. This year, he urged teams to hold meetings inside Meta’s Horizon Workrooms app, which allows users to gather in virtual conference rooms. But many employees didn’t own V.R. headsets or hadn’t set them up yet, and had to scramble to buy and register devices before managers caught on, according to one person with knowledge of the events. In a May poll of 1,000 Meta employees conducted by Blind, an anonymous professional social network, only 58 percent said they understood the company’s metaverse strategy. Employees have also grumbled about the high turnover and frequent shuffling of employees as Mr. Zuckerberg’s priorities change. Inside Meta, two employees said, some workers now jokingly refer to key metaverse projects as M.M.H., an acronym for “make Mark happy.” In September, Vishal Shah, the vice president in charge of Meta’s metaverse division, wrote on an internal message board that he was disappointed in how few Meta employees were using Horizon Worlds, according to a post obtained by The Times. In his post, which was first reported by The Verge, Mr. Shah said that managers would begin tracking workers’ use of Horizon Worlds, and said that testing their own technology was essential. “Why don’t we love the product we’ve built so much that we use it all the time?” Mr. Shah asked. “The simple truth is, if we don’t love it, how can we expect our users to love it?” Mr. Shah, who declined to comment to The Times, also said in his post that Horizon would undergo a “quality lockdown” for the rest of the year...

The true genius in the design here is that the power cable is detachable. Which means if you are traveling to a country with a different power socket, you can just get a wire that suits that, no need to carry a multiplug or extension cord. How is the UGREEN PD200W? In terms of design, I have always been a fan of UGREEN’s design. They have taken boring, mundane, devices that are meant to be hidden away and make them look sleek and elegant while also keeping them understated. After all, you don’t want to actually “see” these devices. Brilliant all around. In terms of usability, this one is a no-brainer. The fact that they even thought of using a removable power cable is brilliant industrial design. For me personally this adds a great deal of flexibility. I can easily hide the charger under my desk in the drawer, and route the cables nicely, only 1 cable going to the power outlet, and the rest all run through my drawers. A beautiful solution to wire management. Another advantage is that you can easily disconnect the PD200W and take it on a trip. It also means that if the power cable fails, you don’t need to replace the whole device. Sadly when connecting an Apple Watch, you can’t use the other USB-A port, as this causes the Apple watch to disconnect. It’s a small issue, but hey it’s still 1 charger to charge them all. What is GaN? If you are wondering what GaN is, then this next section is for you. GaN stands for Gallium nitride.
