This Movie Star And Emmy-Nominated Actor Lives In KY…Do You Recognize Him? – WBKR https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/this-movie-star-and-emmy-nominated-actor-lives-in-kydo-you-recognize-him-wbkr/ Last spring, the folks in central Kentucky were all agog at the thought of running into Katy Perry. The pop superstar temporarily lived here while her husband Orlando Bloom was filming a movie. CELEBRITIES IN KENTUCKY I remember this Facebook post from an onlooker who thinks she spotted her: attachment-attachment-comment-about-movie loading… Then there’s TV icon and Star Trek‘s Captain Kirk, William Shatner, who lived on a farm in Versailles until he lost it in a divorce settlement. Neither he nor Katy calls Kentucky home any longer. KENTUCKY ISN’T EXACTLY CRAWLING WITH A-LISTERS IN RESIDENCE In some states, it’s pretty easy to run into celebrities–California and Tennessee leap to mind–but that’s not the case in Kentucky. Oh sure, we’ve heard any number of stories about Johnny Depp showing up in Owensboro for this reason or that, but none of those visits were ever substantiated. …UNLESS YOU COUNT THIS VETERAN ACTOR However, if you’re in the Georgetown KY area, you could very well run into an actor who’s been hard at it for nearly three decades, isn’t one of the biggest names in the business (although he’s very good at what he does), and who just recently scored his first-ever Emmy nomination for the HBO Max series The White Lotus. In fact, it was his first acting nomination of any kind. If you didn’t see that, you may well have seen Steve Zahn in this 90s twenty-something-angst movie. It’s the first time I remember seeing him: STEVE ZAHN — LONGTIME KENTUCKY RESIDENT Yes, Zahn is a resident of Georgetown–he and his wife own a farm there–and, by all accounts, loves it. Well, for one thing, they’ve been in the Commonwealth for a long time; in a 2017 interview with Vulture, he mentioned his farm and that he and his wife, Robyn, had been living here for 13 years. They’re settled in. Here’s what he told The Irish Times’ Tara Brady in 2021: I’ve never been a slacker. I live on a farm. You wake up. Period. Horses and dogs don’t care if it’s Christmas. I get up at 5.30am and I’m in bed at 9.30pm. I’m that guy. I only use an alarm when I’m working on a movie. And that’s to wake up later. STEVE ZAHN — BIG UK FAN In 2007, Zahn received an honorary PhD from Northern Kentucky University but is a BIG fan of University of Kentucky sports. You may have seen him be he “Y” at a 2014 UK-Alabama basketball game. Or maybe you saw him “fill in” for Kentucky’s lookalike offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello. I’m guessing if you hang around the Lexington/Georgetown area long enough, you WILL run into Steve Zahn. He seems like an affable fellow, pretty approachable. And he seems like a Kentuckian through and through. Not bad for a guy from Marshall, Minnesota. 27 Celebrities from Kentucky Who Aren’t Country Musicians We could have a whole OTHER list of country stars from Kentucky–and athletes, for that matter. But how many of THESE celebrities did you know were from the Bluegrass State? I Bet You Didn’t Know These Celebrities Were Kentucky Colonels 13 Movies That Were Filmed in Kentucky Kentucky hasn’t gone ignored by Hollywood, with regards to the usage of filming locations. But there could always be more, right?

With Travel Prices And Currencies Up And Down This Year, What Are Your Points And Miles Worth? – MarketWatch https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/with-travel-prices-and-currencies-up-and-down-this-year-what-are-your-points-and-miles-worth-marketwatch/ This article is reprinted by permission from NerdWallet.  This has been an unusual year for currencies, period. Rising inflation has sent all sorts of costs skyrocketing (including travel prices). Meanwhile, the euro EURUSD, and British pound GBPUSD, are falling in value relative to the U.S. dollar, making a European vacation somewhat … affordable? With all of these fluctuating prices, how are the currencies of airline and hotel loyalty programs, better known as points and miles, being affected? To get to the bottom of that question, NerdWallet turned to the data. The results of our annual analysis of the value of airline miles and hotel points is finally here, and it has some interesting stories to tell. To get our estimates, we collect real-world data on thousands of flights and hotel stays and compare cash prices and award prices to determine the baseline value of each loyalty program’s points. Here’s how the value of miles and points compares to last year — and what changes you should make to your travel rewards strategy as a result. See: 1 in 3 people say they overspent on travel to earn a credit cards sign-up bonus Most airline miles are worth more The good news is that almost all points and miles are worth more now than they were last year, possibly due in part to inflation, which has driven up the cash prices of flights and hotel nights. Airline miles are now worth an additional 0.1 cent-0.3 cents in value across the board. For example, United Airlines UAL, MileagePlus miles were worth about 1 cent each in our last analysis, so 50,000 miles should have been able to get you a free flight worth about $500. If you didn’t use those miles last year, those same 50,000 miles are now worth 1.2 cents each. That means you can likely redeem them for a flight worth about $600 today. Keep in mind though, inflation has driven travel prices much higher. According to the latest set of Consumer Price Index data, airfare prices are up 33% year-over-year in August. Meanwhile, the valuations of airline miles are up only 8.7% on average from last year. So even though your miles are valued higher, you might still have to shell out more miles for a flight than you would have last year because the flight itself is likely more expensive. Also read: Four travel card perks that might not be worth it anymore Hotel points-wise, one brand stands out Hotel points saw a similar increase to airlines exacerbated by inflation. But there is one huge jump that stands out: World of Hyatt H, . Hyatt has long been a favorite of travelers because of its high value redemptions, and it has consistently had higher valuations than other hotel loyalty programs. Its fixed award chart has further cemented its value in this high-inflation year. This year, Hyatt’s valuation jumped almost an entire cent, from 1.9 cents per point in 2021 to 2.8 cents per point now. That means its points are four times as valuable as competitors’ like Marriott Bonvoy MAR, ( 0.7 cent), Hilton HLT, Honors (0.6 cent) and IHG IHG, One Rewards. (0.7 cent). This discrepancy is likely due to Hyatt being the only hotel loyalty program with the aforementioned fixed award chart. The award chart specifies a limit for the highest number of points a night can cost at a certain property, even if the cash rate may go much higher. That’s where you’ll find Hyatt sweet spots. Read: ‘Forget about chasing rewards and seek the lowest interest rate possible’: Credit-card rates near peak not seen since 1996 How you might change your points and miles strategy Based on our findings, there are a few key takeaways to remember as you book travel into 2023. Consider flying airlines besides Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways. Last year, JetBlue JBLU, and Southwest LUV, had the highest-value airline miles, around 1.5 and 1.4 cents respectively. Now, American Airlines AAL, , Delta Air Lines DAL, , JetBlue and Southwest miles are all worth the same — around 1.5 cents. If loyalty with American or Delta is more convenient for you, start collecting their miles knowing that you’ll get about the same return. Target high-value transfer partners. If you have a travel credit card that earns transferable points, you might spend less points by transferring to a high-value partner like Hyatt instead of booking a Hyatt hotel through the credit card’s travel portal. Don’t miss: Three common travel disasters and what to do about them Calculate the value of your redemption before you book. NerdWallet’s valuations are a baseline value, meaning you should aim to get that value when you cash in your points for a free flight or hotel stay. But not all redemptions are created equal. Make sure you divide the equivalent cash price of the flight or hotel by the number of points they want to charge you. If that number is lower than NerdWallet’s valuations, you might want to save your points for a better redemption. You can use an airline miles calculator to simplify your calculations. Blockchains Metaverse And Web 3.0: Explore The Revolution Ericsson
Blockchains Metaverse And Web 3.0: Explore The Revolution Ericsson
Blockchains, Metaverse And Web 3.0: Explore The Revolution – Ericsson https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/blockchains-metaverse-and-web-3-0-explore-the-revolution-ericsson/ Are we on the cusp of an internet revolution? We are, and it has a name: “the metaverse”! Despite the many challenges which need to be overcome, we see enormous opportunities for society to embrace a new modus operandi of the internet as we know it. Let’s have a closer look and understand the state of affairs of the metaverse and one of its underlying technologies: Web 3.0. Why Web3.0? Whilst not central to our current understanding of the metaverse, it is a powerful technology able to accelerate uptake of the user and developer ecosystem as we will see in this blog. Web 3.0 is built on blockchains that are immutable and have no central structure of ownership. A blockchain can host (economic value) tokens, application data and even applications themselves. Metaverse blockchain use-cases and use-places Let us focus on the user experience in an emerging metaverse based on Web 3.0, and understand why it is such an attractive technology proposition. A good example here is the community-driven metaverse platform Sandbox. It has a lot in common with the non-blockchain games Minecraft and Roblox. The huge difference is that any creator in Sandbox can natively monetize assets and gaming experiences! This is made possible through the transactional SAND utility token which is based on an ERC-20 Ethereum utility token of which there is a finite supply of 3 billion SANDs. The entire Sandbox platform is based on the Ethereum blockchain. That means that any asset generation, game moves, market places or anything else done in Sandbox automatically generates value since based on the underlying value token SAND. The economic value of blockchain-based platforms is thus natively baked into the metaverse, whereas the value of traditional platforms is added posteriorly through a payment portal (e.g. PayPal). This novel approach paves the way for creating assets and even experiences to attain economic value and thus make them tradable. It signals the birth of entirely new economic models, putting creators at the center and ensuring that any developed foreground intellectual property (IP) becomes monetizable. And as long as the monetary tokens are based on the same blockchain, e.g. Ethereum, the generated assets can be traded across application platforms! Web 3.0 thus enables a form of “digital aura” with immutable content provenance across many different applications, as long as they are based on the same blockchain. For example, a creator can list a new digital garment on the Ethereum-based non-fungible token (NFT) site Opensea and trade assets into and out of Sandbox as well as any other metaverse based on Ethereum. The value proposition is strong enough to have a direct impact on our real-world experiences. An example here is how AMC, the largest movie theater chain in the world, is driving foot traffic back into their movie theaters by offering NFTs of movies people purchased tickets for. This hybrid digital-physical approach is a growing opportunity which does not go unnoticed in the gaming and retail spaces, as well as other industries. In fact, we believe that the early days of the metaverse will be less about use-cases but rather about physical use-places. Asset authenticity, ownership and interoperability Immutability without central ownership of blockchains is clearly a strong driver for these novel experiences and forms of economic activities, whether purely digital or hybrid digital-physical. It enables scalable and trusted ways of proving authenticity as well as interoperability. Let’s examine this in more detail. Everything in the Web-3.0-based metaverse has a unique and immutable identifier in form of a long digital address which is recorded on the underlying blockchain. This includes each individual asset (e.g. a specific NFT), each individual token, each individual wallet where (addresses to) tokens are stored on behalf of their owners, etc. These assets can be consumed in various forms; for instance, an NFT can be shown in a digital- (as well as physical-) art gallery but also used in action in a game displayed on a 2D mobile phone or within a 3D VR headset. The protocols underlying blockchains ensure that these identifies are unique and that they are not attributed elsewhere or sold twice. This guarantees authenticity and true ownership of digital assets. If the validation is executed on a public blockchain (such as Ethereum), then there is also full transparency as each transaction can be publicly verified if needed. Lately, private blockchains have been gaining traction that are based on a limited set of (generally) known parties, thus offering an extra degree of privacy at the expense of universal transparency. One can imagine a mix of public and private blockchains to be used for future metaverse experiences where some assets are traded publicly and others kept within a private circle. One can also imagine physical assets to be validated onto a blockchain, which – to date – poses problems in terms of authenticity and uniqueness of physical assets. We believe, however, that this can be solved in the future by using advanced technologies, such as IoT (to measure properties of the physical asset), 5G (to transmit the data in a secure manner), AI (to verify properties) and digital twins (to build realistic replicas). Once an asset is recorded on a blockchain, it becomes directly interoperable as long as the same ledger technology is being used. Assets from different public and private blockchains can be made interoperable through suitable exchanges, even though options today are fairly limited. This is why blockchain, asset and metaverse interoperability standards are so important! They should focus on interoperability between public blockchain platforms, private blockchain platforms, and both public and private blockchain platforms. Massive efforts are under way to this end, such as the Open Metaverse Alliance or Nvidia’s Universal Scene Description as the Language of the Metaverse. An important design factor here will be to ensure scalability,  performance and energy consumption. Another important aspect is security, ensuring that assets cannot be compromised on a ledger or even across ledgers. 5G may play a central role in underpinning such security efforts whilst ensuring interoperability – indeed a strength of the global telecommunications ecosystem. The power of the new creator economy An economy without proper payment mechanisms is not sustainable, and the Web 3.0 creator economy is no different! Mechanisms to attribute asset value to non-fungible and immutable tokens are in place but these are fairly basic today. That is, one can create an NFT and trade it against specific blockchain tokens; or one can be paid in tokens for winning a metaverse game. However, there are still numerous issues which need to be resolved, such as the entire UX experience to democratize access for end users who are not necessarily experts in digital wallets, the inability to trade any token against any other, the limitations of some metaverse apps to only accept a specific token, the difficulty of converting real-world (fiat) currencies into digital tokens (and vice-versa), and the high volatility of digital tokens and currencies. The high volatility is a serious problem since long-term value is difficult to ensure! We have seen tokens to double or half in value based on a single tweet of a famous influencer. Many (more traditional) institutions see value in blockchain-based currencies but are spooked by the high volatility, thus forcing them to use more centralized control mechanisms which – in fact – go against the decentralized nature of public blockchains. Examples of such mechanisms are to peg the digital currency to a centralized fiat currency; or to use private ledgers with a more centralized control. However, once these issues are solved, the ensuring creator economy will be powerful! This is exemplified in the figure (below) which is structured into three parts: the underlying traditional technology ecosystem on the lower IaaS part of the figure traditional metaverse examples on the right-hand side 0-based metaverse examples on the left-hand side The traditional technology enabler segment is composed of device and component vendors, connectivity providers and platform players – the examples shown are non-exhaustive. The traditional way of building a metaverse experience is shown through the examples of Fortnite, Minecraft and Roblox. They are traditional since the economic value through payment opportunities has been added posteriorly (and is handled through centralized payment/ownership gateways). The new way forward is enabled with blockchains: Here, a new set of interdependent layers is emerging composed of the: blockchain layer value layer the application layer The blockchain layer is comprised of the blockchain infrastructure; examples are Ethereum, Cardano, EOS, etc. The value layer is comprised of specific tokens running on these blockchains, payment wallets, token/currency exchanges as well as NFT marketplaces. The application layer hosts the actual metaverse applications, such as Decentraland or Sandbox. And if you note the order of the layers, the application layer cannot exist without the value layer! For example, the Sandbox metaverse cannot exist without the SAND token which – in turn – cannot exist without the underlying Ethereum blockchain. Therefore, any economic activity in the Sandbox metaverse leads to economic gain. This is very different to the traditional approach where services and applications can exist (and even often only emerge as market winners) without payment built in. Could that be the answer to building value generation natively into our 5G and emerging 6G networks? Indeed, one of the ...

CEO Exodus: Leaders Step Down As Crypto Firms Feel The Pinch – BeInCrypto https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/ceo-exodus-leaders-step-down-as-crypto-firms-feel-the-pinch-beincrypto/ CEO exodus: A number of crypto CEOs stepped down from their roles in recent weeks. This has prompted companies to look for new talent elsewhere, or from within. The bear market and an economic recession seems well underway. At least six CEOs have left their jobs since August. These include Michael Moro of Genesis Trading, Sam Trabucco of digital asset trading firm Alameda Research, Jesse Powell of crypto exchange Kraken, Alex Mashinsky of brankrupt Celsius Network, and Brett Harrison, president of FTX U.S. Perhaps the most notable resignation was that of MicroStrategy’s Michael Saylor, a staunch Bitcoin advocate. The news came as the firm reported a second-quarter loss of $1.06 billion. This is largely due to an impairment charge of $917 million based on the value of its BTC holdings. CEO exodus: Leaving the jobs they love All CEOs gave different reasons for quitting the jobs they once loved, positions they held for many years. Mashinsky regrets running the company into the ground, cratering the firm’s balance sheet to the tune of $1.2 billion. As CEO, he’s become a “distraction,” he says. Trabucco was stressed out, “needed to relax and prioritize other things.” As for Powell, he did not see the “fun” in running an outsized company he co-founded eleven years ago. “It’s just gotten to be more draining on me,” he moaned. Moro paid the price for Genesis’ $2.4 billion exposure to Three Arrows Capital (3AC), the failed crypto hedge fund. Together with Celsius and Voyager Digital, it became one of the biggest casualties of the credit contagion from TerraUSD’s $40 billion collapse in May. Harrison never quite explained the reasons behind his unexpected departure after just over a year at the helm. Except to praise himself for growing FTX U.S. employees from three to 100, “working together to build a nascent crypto exchange into a multi-business enterprise.” Changing market conditions Whatever their reasons, the high-profile CEO turnover shows that market conditions in crypto are changing, according to analysts. Profits have tanked and cashflows are thin due to the 2022 bear market. It is a downturn like never before, marked by war, high inflation and fugitive founders. Both the resignation of Genesis’ Moro and Celsius’ Mashinsky are a result of decisions made in the past, at peak bull market hype. The reassignment of Saylor to executive chairman has been thought of in this way, too. The new CEO will refocus on MicroStrategy’s core business of mobile software. The company’s shift away from Bitcoin has been seen by some as an admission of regret over the company’s past involvement with the cryptocurrency. “While the bear market can be the root cause, directors such as Mashinsky left as a result of cascading bankruptcies, lawsuits, and outright violations of financial laws,” Alex Malkov, co-counder of Islamic Coin, told Be[In]Crypto. “The close attention of financial watchdogs, as well as legislative activity, make many top managers reevaluate their actions. The bearish trend has also cut salary privileges customary for large crypto companies in recent times.” CEO exodus and regulation Governments began to tighten crypto regulation after the spectacular collapse of the Terra blockchain in May. It has become clear that the industry is entering a new phase, one that involves direct intervention from regulators. Decentralization is a key tenet of the crypto industry. For platforms like Kraken, prioritizing decentralization means challenging existing regulatory frameworks that entrench power in central authorities like governments. Jesse Powell, a Bitcoin fundamentalist who champions the ethos of privacy and individual freedom, may have resigned on this account, worried about bending to regulatory demands. He told Fortune that he wanted to spend “more time on stuff…like working on product and industry advocacy.” The founder refused to block Russian-linked accounts unless compelled by the law to do so. Brett Harrison, the former FTX U.S. president, summed up the regulatory dilemma. He stated in his resignation notice that the crypto industry was at “a number of crossroads.” But he was more concerned about the arrival of what he called “larger market participants.” The Great Resignation Vadim Keff, a crypto analyst and co-founder of blockchain firm T7T Labs, believes there are several ways to look at the CEO turnover. But he does not think “we should imply” any significant meaning to recent events. “I think that most crypto CEO departures are linked to ‘The Great Resignation’ trend and not to anything crypto specific,” Keff told Be[In]Crypto. He was referring to a wave of resignations by employees during the pandemic, that became known as “The Great Resignation.” Keff pulled a report by accounting firm Deloitte to support his theory. The report showed that around “70% of company leaders in any industry are seriously considering quitting for a job that better supports their well-being.” “As the crypto market is rapidly growing, crypto CEOs will have a tough job to do in leading their companies. It is natural that some CEOs would prefer to step aside especially if they have already been in the managing role for many years,” he added. Where to next? Harrison will continue to work in the industry to remove “technological barriers to full participation in and maturation of global crypto markets.” Sam Trabucco will be spending more time his family and Powell will stay on as Kraken board chair. (© Tiksa Negeri/Reuters) Ukraine exported more than 4 million metric tons of food in August, reaching hungry people in Africa, Asia and other parts of the world. Prior to Russia’s February 24 invasion, Ukraine shipped 6 million metric tons of grain a month. The recent shipments are the result of a deal brokered by Türkiye and the United Nations between Ukraine and Russia to resume Ukrainian agricultural exports via the Black Sea. With U.S. assistance, the U.N. World Food Programme recently made Ukrainian wheat shipments to the Horn of Africa and to Yemen — areas suffering severe droughts and conflicts. More than half of the Ukrainian exports via the Black Sea Grain Initiative have gone to countries in the Global South, which broadly refers to developing regions in Latin America, Asia, Africa and Oceania. Other countries destined to receive Ukrainian food products include Bangladesh, India, Libya and Tunisia. The volume of maritime traffic from Ukraine’s ports increases daily. The U.N.’s Black Sea Grain Initiative website regularly updates vessel movements from Ukraine. (State Dept./M. Gregory) “There is no single solution to the global food crisis, but the unblocking of Ukraine’s seaborne exports will address some global supply disruptions,” the WFP said in an August 30 statement. Humanitarian officials warned that a global food crisis is worsening because of climate change, conflict and supply chain disruptions from COVID-19. But Ukraine’s increasing grain exports are a source of hope. Food prices dropped in August, according to the U.N.’s Food Price Index. “The successful exit of multiple vessels was beyond the imagining of most people only a few weeks ago and to have come this far is extraordinary,” Neil Roberts, head of marine and aviation at Lloyd’s Market Association, told Reuters in August. WATCH: Statue Of Harry Truman Unveiled In U.S. Capitol Rotunda – PBS NewsHour https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/watch-statue-of-harry-truman-unveiled-in-u-s-capitol-rotunda-pbs-newshour/ Politics Sep 29, 2022 7:37 PM EDT WASHINGTON D.C. (AP) — Former President Harry S. Truman was remembered by Democratic and Republican leaders as one of the most consequential presidents in history during a ceremony Thursday unveiling a statue of Truman in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. Watch the unveiling in the player above. Speakers at the ceremony unveiling the 7.5-foot bronze statue of the nation’s 33rd president remembered the numerous substantial decisions Truman made, despite being vice president for only 82 days before President Franklin Roosevelt died in April 1945. Truman, who was born and reared in Missouri, helped end World War II, created the United Nations and NATO, desegregated the U.S. Armed Forces and federal workforce, recognized Israel and helped lead the world’s response to the Soviet Union and Communism. The statue, sculpted by Tom Corbin of Kansas City, looks like Truman, wearing a double-breasted jacket, is walking down steps. It includes a phrase Truman is famous for — “The buck stops here.” U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, a Republican from Missouri, said “no president in such a short period of time made more consequential decisions then Harry Truman. “If you’ve ever been in a job where you made decisions, just imagine the decisions he had to make and how quickly he had to make them and how well he made them,” Blunt said. Truman’s grandson, Clifton Truman Daniels, said of all of his grandfather’s accomplishments, his most significant “was reminding us that a farmer, a citizen solider, a small businessman can rise to the highest office in this land and do a better job of it than almost anybody else.” U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a Democrat from Missouri, said Truman rose from being a farmer, a soldier, small businessman, county judge, and U.S. senator before becoming president. Cleaver, who is Black, praised Truman’s decision to integrate the armed forces and the government work force, saying it helped create a middle class for Black people. “From this day forward may Harry Truman’s statue serve as a reminder of his courage, and courage we need to have to take on projects that will help build this nation,” Cleaver said. “For my congressional colleagues and I, we too should accept the responsibility, as did Truman, and declare ‘The buck stops here.’” Truman’s statue will be the 10th presidential statue in the Capitol Rotunda, flanked by George Washington and Ulysses S. Grant. The Truman Library Institute led a campaign to raise more than $400,000 to fund the statue. Each state has two statues in the Rotunda to honor people notable in the state’s history. In 2019, the Missouri Legislature voted to install Truman’s statue to replace a 1899 statue of Thomas Hart Benton, a five-term U.S. senator from Missouri. Benton’s statue will be moved to the State Historical Society Art Gallery in Columbia, Missouri.

The Metaverse: What The Law Look Will Look Like Law.asia
The Metaverse: What The Law Look Will Look Like Law.asia
The Metaverse: What The Law Look Will Look Like – Law.asia https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/the-metaverse-what-the-law-look-will-look-like-law-asia/ Current and potential applications of the metaverse are endless, but the new digital realm has raised novel issues that have confronted legal professionals in various roles. Putro Harnowo recaptures the views of tech experts attending a recent industry event T he metaverse has taken the spotlight as a limitless world that may be navigated and explored as virtual reality. This augmented world occurs through vision in the form of a head-mounted display, operating alongside audio or haptic sensory feedback that is elicited from devices that are worn by the user. Singapore’s TechLaw.Fest 2022 sought to answer new questions arising in the new space by bringing together well-known experts to offer possible solutions to the challenges posed. “We have to look at the balance between enabling the metaverse and its components to develop with proper incentivisation measures in place, and also safeguarding through regulation,” says Stanley Lai, partner and head of IP practice at Singapore law firm Allen & Gledhill. “Success and harm arise from abuse and exploitation. A balance can only be achieved by the convergence of non-legal rights, technologies, as well as the possibility of new evolving rights and obligations.” In IP matters, issues of copyright, trademarks and personality rights have become enigmas that are convoluted with decentralised technologies. Unregulated content has also posed harm to its users, in addition to the difficulties with enforcement beyond the platform space. For those seeking and currently involved in the metaverse project, the contractual interface, liability risk mitigation and data privacy laws are among the first to ponder. “Being an IP and commercial litigation lawyer for more than 25 years, I’ve seen our professional roles incrementally evolving,” says Lai. “Lawyers who practise in this field now have to be the embodiment of expertise and IP content regulation, data protection and the law of obligations.” IP rights analysis Earlier this year, Hermes sued digital artist Mason Rothschild for selling collections of NFTs called MetaBirkins, which were intended to be a playful abstraction of an existing fashion culture landmark, the famous Hermes Birkin, in the metaverse. The limited edition NFTs were sold for USD450 each late last year, collecting USD46,000 in just two weeks. The French luxury brand stated that MetaBirkins infringed on Hermes’ trademark rights and were an example of fake products in the metaverse, while demanding Rothschild and the companies that made available the MetaBirkins for sale remove the NFTs. Although Rothschild is currently contesting the cease-and-desist order, the largest NFT marketplace, Opensea, has complied and removed MetaBirkins from its platform. In AM General v Activision Blizzard, where Activision Blizzard reproduced military vehicle Humvees in their gaming platform, Call of Duty, the reproduction of Humvees is so realistic that the game company was sued by the vehicle manufacturer, AM General. However, the courts gave Activision a credit for their work, as the game maker had no choice but to make an accurate reproduction of the vehicles to make the war zone environment realistic. “We can start this analysis by walking ourselves through the various scenarios in trademark law to see how this will actually play out before the courts,” says Daniel Seng, associate professor at the National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Law. “The fundamental rule in trademark law is that a mark is to be used in relation to goods and services, so if a mark is not associated with or used in relation to goods and services, it falls outside of the trademark regime, and trademark law will not govern the issues in that particular instance.” Copyright law is also exemplified by the fact that it centres around the rights of reproduction, Seng adds, including the conversion from two or three dimensions and vice-versa. A good example of this is United Feature Syndicate v Koons (1993), where American artist Jeff Koons created a sculpture named Wild Boy and Puppy. Koons argued that the puppy was an accidental reproduction of Odie, the dog from the Garfield comics, and contended that this was fair use. However, the courts were not convinced, as Koons had made multiple copies of his sculpture for sale, which was therefore detrimental to his fair use defence. “The fair use defence is likely to feature very prominently in many metaverse cases, particularly if the assessment by the courts is done on a case-by-case basis by evaluating the alleged infringers’ use of copyrighted works,” says Seng. “Even though the fact that a work could have commercial use is not a factor that would preclude the application of the fair use test, the fact that the use of a work can have potential commercial ramifications in relation to the market of the original work will negatively affect the user’s reliance on the fair use test.” In some cases, copyright analysis in the metaverse will also overlap with personality rights, as there is limited recognition in the IP space for an individual’s right to his or her persona. For example, in Robyn Rihanna Fenty v Arcadia Group Brands, which involved the image of Rihanna on a T-shirt sold in London, an action was successfully taken against the T-shirt maker for passing off. “The interesting thing about this particular right is that, at least in common law jurisdictions outside of the US, it overlaps with the right to privacy and the right to be left alone and data protection rights,” says Seng. “One needs a holistic analysis of IP rights when analysing personality rights because one must also consider the data protection issues associated with subjects like these.” From a wider perspective, Seng expects legislators to evaluate the need to further harmonise copyright rules in the metaverse. For example, the internet era has sparked the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) to ratify and update its internet treaties that lay down an international framework for protecting unauthorised access to and use of creative works on the internet and other digital networks. Colliding realms As the metaverse developed, Tan Cheng-Han, dean and chair professor of commercial law at the City University of Hong Kong, says the digital realm has brought with it the dark side of the internet, and the greater convergence of the real and virtual world will exacerbate this tendency. A BBC News investigation in February 2022 reported that a researcher posing as a 13-year-old girl witnessed online grooming, racist insults and an assault threat in the metaverse. Although the term “grooming” is used, Tan argues that this does not fall within the current definition of grooming in criminal law, as action in the physical world is necessary to fit into such a category. Another example in a different context is groups of user avatars with inappropriate language on their digital clothes, such as language that is offensive to a particular religion. “It is not difficult to envisage other types of highly anti-social behaviour that could take place in the metaverse, which are not offences to date and will cause a lot of people to wonder if they should be,” says Tan. “Since the metaverse is a junction of the real and the online world, and arguably an imperfect mirror of the real world, to what extent should activities be regulated more similarly to those in the physical world?” Tan also points out that general thinking on the internet has changed considerably in the past few years; where it was once extremely libertarian, states are currently moving in the direction of regulating online speech. The EU’s Digital Services Act, the UK’s Online Safety Bill and Singapore’s Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act are examples. Recently, Singapore’s Ministry of Communications and Information launched a public consultation on a proposed code of practice that will require platforms with significant reach to have appropriate measures and safeguards to mitigate exposure to harmful content for Singapore-based users. These include having community standards, content moderation processes, and tools to manage users’ exposure. “It will likely also be the case in the early phase of the metaverse to regulate online harm through the imposition of standards and obligations on significant platforms,” says Tan. Besides removing or blocking existing content, Tan argues that it may be equally important to prevent harmful activities from taking place in the metaverse. For example, is it feasible to require users’ avatars to be verified by authentic digital identities before accessing important services in the metaverse? As a result, such wrongdoing will leave a digital signature that can be traced to the identity of the user. Another area where the real world might intersect with the metaverse is digital assets. As such assets become more precious and might have sentimental value, in July 2021, Tencent was reported to have developed a patent on digital legacy that will allow people to pass on digital assets to the next generation. “If someone has an avatar that behaves in a certain way over a period of time in the metaverse, coupled with algorithms and artificial intelligence, eventually it’s likely to be that when the person has gone from the physical world, the avatar could probably be a fairly accurate representation of what the person would have done in the living world,” says Tan. “And I can just imagine and hope that the children and family members would like the digital footprint to continue to exist in the online space for them to remember the person.” Nitty gritty liability The multitude of organisations in the metaverse brings a big challenge from a contractual and liability standpoint, according to Ahmed Baladi, a par...

Blockchain Gamers Surge As Users Attempt stacking Crypto Says DappRadar Cointelegraph
Blockchain Gamers Surge As Users Attempt stacking Crypto Says DappRadar Cointelegraph
Blockchain Gamers Surge As Users Attempt ‘stacking Crypto,’ Says DappRadar – Cointelegraph https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/blockchain-gamers-surge-as-users-attempt-stacking-crypto-says-dappradar-cointelegraph/ User activity on blockchain gaming decentralized applications (DApps) surged in September, with a host of games posting significant increases in the number of active users. According to data from DappRadar, seven out of the top 10 games in terms of the number of “unique wallet addresses interacting with dapp’s smart contracts” increased over the past 30 days, with all of the top five games being in the green during that time frame. At the time of writing, the DApps registering growth in the period include Web3 gaming platform Gameta, and blockchain-based games Alien Worlds, Solitaire Blitz, Benji Bananas, and Splinterlands, Farmers World, and Arc8 by GAMEE.  In a Sept. 27 blog post, DappRadar noted that eight of the current top 10 blockchain games are mobile-first, which could eventually “bring millions of users to the blockchain,” noting:  “Dapp games like Gameta, Benji Bananas, Upland, and Trickshot Blitz let anyone with a mobile device earn crypto with little prior knowledge, investment, or risk.” “Using daily activities like hyper-casual mobile games as a hook ensures users find fun once they interact, while solid tokenomics can encourage everyday use and retention,” it added.  DappRadar said one of the possible reasons for a rise in popularity of blockchain games despite the bear market, is the idea of “bleed in the bear and run in the bull.” “The idea that stacking crypto and investments in a bear market pays off in the bull is almost proven at this point.” The biggest uptick in users came from Animoca Brands’ Benji Bananas (Polygon) which saw a 2016.54% increase over the past 30 days. Notably, this game was a Web2 mobile app until March this year.  Animoca then introduced play-to-earn (P2E) elements via the Bored Ape Yacht Club affiliated Ape Coin (APE). While it is unclear what specifically saw the number of Benji Bananas users increase by so much, it did host a P2E gaming event this month that offered a series of valuable in-game NFTs to the winners. Blockchain gaming DApps activity: DappRadar Out of the top 10 games, only Axie Infinity, Trickshot Blitz, and Upland saw decreases over the past 30-days. The increase of blockchain gamers this month comes as publications such as Bloomberg note in a Sept. 28 article that the highly correlated NFT market trading “frenzy is almost dead.” It points to overall NFT trading volumes dropping 97% since January as evidence of such. As Animoca Brands co-founder Yat Siu pointed out via Twitter on Sept. 30, purely looking at the metric of NFT sales volume doesn’t necessarily paint the whole picture in NFTs or gaming. Siu highlighted that NFT prices have generally declined in accordance with the price of their paired assets such as Ether (ETH,) while many games — that don’t often grab the headlines — require NFTs that are relatively cheap. He instead emphasized that user activity and the number of people entering Web3 is where the focus should be. 6/ Judging an entire market simply by one metric is imperfect you need to take a multifaceted lens eg. @TheSandboxGame has seen record growth in users in its last season despite the market and blockchain wallets continues to rise https://t.co/brvDgCAhqh — Yat Siu (@ysiu) September 29, 2022 Gods Unchained breaks 10 top NFT sales Meanwhile, NFT-based card battle game Gods Unchained has seen its NFT sales volume creep into the top 10 in NFT sales volume over the past 30 days, according to Cryptoslam. Gods Unchained has seen a 373.25% increase over the past 30 days to sit at $10.8 million at the time of writing. This marks the first time the game has seen NFT sales top $10 million since January, and after a very slow February to August period. Related: Yat Siu: Asia GameFi opportunity huge as gamers don’t hate NFTs Reasons behind this could be due to discussions of a “Season 2” upgrade to improve the game and lore in the works and GameStop offering free NFT packs to Pro members this month. While an esports tournament with a $70,000 prize pool was also announced at the start of this week. Gods Unchained has also seen a significant increase in active users over the past 30 days, gaining 28.50% to sit at around 14,180 according to DappRadar. The game still has a long way to catch up to the top 10 however, as its user count places it at twenty-eighth.

Anti-Asian Hate Crimes Are Scaring Chinese Travelers Away From The US – CNN https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/anti-asian-hate-crimes-are-scaring-chinese-travelers-away-from-the-us-cnn/ Editor’s Note — A version of this story appears in CNN’s Meanwhile in China newsletter, a three-times-a-week update exploring what you need to know about the country’s rise and how it impacts the world. Sign up here. Hong Kong (CNN) — Cannon Yu lives in Shantou, Guangdong province. In the past, her sales job at a packaged-foods company took her to business conferences all over the world. But she hasn’t left China since early 2020 and is taking her sales calls online instead of in person in Thailand, Germany, Morocco and elsewhere. While most countries have reopened their borders and resumed travel back to previous pre-Covid levels, China has remained extremely conservative in its approach and continues to adhere to a stringent and uncompromising “zero-Covid” policy. While those policies keep Chinese people in, they also keep most foreigners out, making it less likely for people like Yu to interact with people from other countries. And although China still hasn’t announced a plan for removing quarantine and other roadblocks for international travel, Yu can’t wait to get back on the road and travel again. There’s one exception, though — she has major reservations about visiting the United States. How the East looks at the West Scott Moskowitz, geopolitical risk analyst for APAC at the decision intelligence company Morning Consult, says that state-controlled media in China has played up examples of anti-Asian violence in the US in order to make its citizens less interested in going there. It’s “a strategically curated ecosystem that over-reports and sensationalizes negative foreign news compared to the tight controls on coverage of challenging or disturbing domestic instance,” he says. And Yu’s beliefs bear that out. “They look at people discriminately (there),” she says. “Not only for Chinese, but for Black people. It’s very difficult to get fair treatment for all people in the United States.” She adds that she has spoken to friends who have visited the US, claiming that they were detained and searched by customs agents before being allowed to leave the airport. Yu is one of an increasingly vocal community of Chinese travelers who say that anti-Asian discrimination in the US has made them afraid to visit someday. This month, Morning Consult published a study on this exact trend. Their findings, based on a survey of 1,000 adults, showed that “a plurality of Chinese have little to no interest in US travel,” with violence and anti-Asian discrimination both cited as factors. According to Morning Consult’s data, 22% of mainland Chinese respondents are “not interested at all” in visiting the US, with an additional 23% saying they are “not that interested.” Of the survey respondents, 57% say that violent crime is a primary reason they don’t want to go to the US, while 52% cite terrorism, 36% say petty crime and 44% say they are concerned about anti-China bias by locals. Mass shootings are another specific concern, with “those who have seen, read or heard about the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas” earlier this year “far more likely to cite violent crime as a reason not to travel” to the country, Morning Consult says in its report. Instead, some Chinese travelers are now looking elsewhere, with destinations in Europe clearly preferred over the US, according to the survey. In the wake of anti-Asian hate crimes, “United Shades of America” discusses the need for Asian Americans to have a greater voice in bridging divides. The series airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET. The rise of violence Amid the pandemic, there has been an increase in anti-Asian harassment around the world, much of it the result of misinformation or misplaced aggression about the origins of Covid-19. The nonpartisan coalition Stop AAPI Hate provides a place for people to report harassment and attacks. Perhaps the most covered anti-Asian hate attack in the United States since the start of the pandemic was the “Atlanta spa murders,” during which eight women in three different massage parlors were shot and killed by Robert Aaron Long, a White man. Six of the eight victims were Asian, and Long was charged with hate crimes in addition to the murders. Last year, New York Congresswoman Grace Meng introduced the Covid-19 Hate Crimes bill, which was signed into law by President Joe Biden. Meng, who is of Taiwanese descent, represents parts of Queens, the diverse New York City borough that is home to many Asian Americans. These incidents — which range from street harassment to physical violence — get significant coverage outside of the US, including in China. Current geopolitical tensions aren’t helping. Moskowitz says that the perception that the US is China’s biggest rival has only heightened attention to stories of anti-Asian discrimination or violence in the country, even though similar incidents also take place elsewhere. “This differential is especially exaggerated in terms of (Chinese state media) reporting on the US as compared to Europe and other places. Some of this is strategic and intentional, curated in order to diminish the appeal and soft power of the country China sees as its great rival, both politically and ideologically,” he tells CNN Travel. “There are strong perceptions in China that there is a lot of global bias against their country,” Moskowitz adds. “Personal and national identity are very strongly tied in China so there may be concerns that more macro and political grievances and resentments (both real and perceived) with a country will be turned back towards the individual when traveling abroad.” How to change perceptions Although changing the way Chinese travelers see the US won’t happen overnight, it’s not impossible. “The results of this survey specifically suggest that travel companies and destinations should double down on safety-related messaging in marketing campaigns targeting Chinese consumers,” says Lindsey Roeschke, travel and hospitality analyst at Morning Consult, who co-authored the survey with Moskowitz. She adds: “Travel brands should provide pre-departure information on safety tools and tips. Those who want to take additional action may consider providing access to safety-oriented tour guides or a designated personal safety representative during travelers’ stays.” Some countries have given specific warnings to their citizens about US travel, specifically as it relates to gun violence. In 2019, the group Amnesty International issued an alert to people exhorting them to “exercise caution and have an emergency contingency plan when traveling throughout the USA” due to gun violence. As for Cannon Yu, she’s still eager to travel anywhere outside of China once it becomes less difficult. Despite everything, she is still curious about the US and hopes to eventually see it for herself. In particular, there’s one place on her bucket list — Las Vegas. “I want to gamble,” she says. And then, after a pause, she continues: “I want to make friends.” Top image: Asian American community leaders place flowers on a memorial for murder victim Christina Yuna Lee after an anti-Asian hate rally in New York City. Digital Minister Aims To Wrest Japan Out Of Analog Doldrums – The Associated Press – En Español https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/digital-minister-aims-to-wrest-japan-out-of-analog-doldrums-the-associated-press-en-espanol/ TOKYO (AP) — The politician tapped to help Japan keep pace with the digital age has his work cut out for him. After all, the nation known for Nintendo games, Lexus sportscars and other gadgetry galore also loves the fax machine and the traditional “hanko” seals that work as analog signatures. But Digital Minister Taro Kono has a reputation for no-nonsense action and for defying vested interests in high places. “I have no intention of playing coordinator,” he told reporters in a small briefing that was, aptly, conducted online Friday. “If people don’t listen, I am going to beat them up,” he added with a laugh. Japan ranked 28th among 64 nations in digital competitiveness in 2021, little changed from five years before, according to a study by IMD, a Swiss-based independent academic organization, which looked at how well equipped nations are to encourage technological development and to leverage them for the future. The U.S. was No. 1, China No. 15. Kono, a former foreign minister and defense minister, has flaunted his digital savvy for years. Kono’s Japanese Twitter account, which has drawn 2.5 million followers, features everything from a bowling video to policy commentary. Fluent in English, having attended Georgetown University, he also has an English Twitter account with 70,000 followers. In a YouTube video last month, he urged people to get a My Number Card, a digital identity card for Japanese citizens and residents that they can use for online government applications and link to a driver’s license, library card or online banking. But Kono knows it will take more than social media stardom to wrest Japan out of its analog doldrums. He noted the endeavor doesn’t have to be complicated; people will naturally choose what’s convenient. “Even a child knows that a seal doesn’t really work as personal identification,” he said, while adding that he loves Japanese seals as craftwork. “There is a mindset that it’s someone else’s problem,” he said of society’s complacency. During the coronavirus pandemic, when remote working became widespread around the world, Japanese realized how far behind they had fallen, Kono said. The Digital Agency was set up in Japan last year to nurture competitiveness in digital technology. Some skepticism remains. Critics say the idea of “a digital transformation” is already outdated and only Japan is still talking so much about it. In 2018, the minister in charge of cybersecurity, Yoshitaka Sakurada, became a target of ridicule when he didn’t know what a USB port was. Yet technology experts have pinned great hopes for what Kono might achieve. Kono has always stood apart among ruling Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers. His father was a prominent lawmaker known as a maverick. His grandfather was also a legendary politician. And rock the boat is what Kono needs to do. His agency has shown by example by becoming more open and diverse, adding people from the private sector and other walks of life who may have ideas on the change Japan so critically needs. What will be his benchmark measure for success? “When there are smiles everywhere,” Kono said. ___ Yuri Kageyama is on Twitter https://twitter.com/yurikageyama

10 Ways To Capture The Post-Vacation Feeling At Home Glam
10 Ways To Capture The Post-Vacation Feeling At Home Glam
10 Ways To Capture The Post-Vacation Feeling At Home – Glam https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/10-ways-to-capture-the-post-vacation-feeling-at-home-glam/ Bangkok Click Studio/Shutterstock Vacations are important; they provide a mental reset to rejuvenate and reinvigorate you before you return to work. But according to Forbes, The Center for Economic and Policy Research has nicknamed the U.S. the “No Vacation Nation,” indicating that workers are neglecting to take the time off they not only earn but desperately need. Without vacations, you may end up feeling burned out and resentful of your career, school schedule, or other obligations.  According to Everyday Health, there is tons of evidence to support why we should prioritize taking time off. Vacations are directly linked to reduced stress, improved productivity, and better overall life satisfaction because they give people the chance to wholeheartedly relax before the pressures and constraints of the working world fall back on them. As beneficial as vacations are, sometimes there are barriers outside of our control that affect them. The COVID-19 pandemic, for example, severely impacted the travel industry as many people were forced to cancel their vacation plans (via Styl.Inc). Other times, not taking regular vacations simply comes down to money. If there isn’t enough extra cash in the budget to splurge on a trip, it just doesn’t feel like a realistic possibility. If these factors, or others, are keeping you from planning a vacation to your dream destination, know that there are brilliant ways you can recreate a post-vacation feeling at home.  Recreate a spa experience Lucigerma/Shutterstock Ready to spoil yourself? Recreating a full-on, relaxing spa experience is easy to do with the right supplies, and mud masks and cucumbers are only the beginning. According to Vistana Signature Experiences, the first thing you should do is choose a room for your home spa. Bathrooms tend to be ideal. Once your location is picked out, special touches can make the experience more relaxing: add bath bombs, Epson salt, and essential oil drops to the tub; flower petals, baking soda, and chamomile are perfect in your foot soak; and pre-packaged face masks add convenience. The perfect ambiance is key for a spa day at home (via Unpacked). Try dimming the lights and lighting candles or burning incense to fill your space with scents of vanilla, lavender, or coconut. The final touch is soft, gentle music — or nature sounds like birds chirping and raindrops — playing in the background. Create a playlist to enhance to calming vibe. Be sure to keep your journal or diary nearby for writing down your thoughts, feelings, and manifestations for the future. Recreate a beach day Studio Romantic/Shutterstock If you live in a landlocked state, recreating a beach experience at home might be just what you need. According to WebMD, there is a slew of health benefits that come from taking trips to the beach. It’s a refreshing place that opens up your senses, provides sun exposure, and naturally lifts your mood.  The first step in creating your at-home beach, according to BuzzFeed, is to play the sound of gentle waves crashing along the shoreline. Once you’re in the right headspace, try wearing a beach-inspired perfume. Fragrances with hints of palm leaf, coconut, and sea salt are good options. If you’re not into perfume, a few dollops of sunscreen will work also. After that, it’s time to start decorating. String together seashells and drape them over your banister and place dried starfish on your coffee table. Run your fingers through a sand-filled zen garden or squish your toes in a kids’ sandbox. Having the right foods and drinks will also help enhance the beach vibes. Hot dogs with all the trimmings are a great choice (via BuzzFeed) and fruity cocktails (or mocktails) are always fun –– especially when they have cute umbrella garnishes. Finally, if you have access to water, whether it’s in the neighborhood community pool or at the gym, enjoy some time there. Go camping in your own backyard Melissa Balthaser/Shutterstock As long as you have a backyard or patio space to work with, camping at home can make you feel like you’re far away on an adventurous vacation. Pitch a sturdy tent, line up some comfy sleeping bags, and prep your ingredients for making s’mores. If you have a safe place to do so, Country Living recommends lighting a fire pit. It will keep you warm and that campfire smell just adds to the experience. Hang some string lights for extra twinkle and once the sun sets, sing along to your favorite childhood songs and read about creepy ghosts on Reddit threads. After all, a camping trip isn’t complete without a few scary stories.  Adding activities like a scavenger hunt, cornhole, and catching fireflies to your to-do list for the night is great if you’ve got little ones in tow. The Washington Post says dressing up in your pajamas, keeping a portable lamp or flashlight close, and having a good book on deck to read are a few more ways you can truly enjoy a night of camping in your own backyard. Prioritize your sleep Olena Yakobchuk/Shutterstock When you’re on vacation, you have the freedom to get as much sleep as you could possibly want. If you’re really trying to capture the post-vacation feeling at home, prioritizing your sleep is a must. When you get deep sleep, you feel energized and ready to take on each new day. Of course, it might be hard to prioritize sleep when you finally have time to read chapters in your favorite book, scroll through your social media timelines, and binge-watch fun reality TV shows (via UNC Health Talk). Nevertheless, getting quality sleep is absolutely vital. According to Wired, prioritizing your sleep is hugely important because a lack of good sleep heavily impacts your mental and physical health. People who have abnormal sleep patterns are more susceptible to diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. If you’re not able to take time off work to go on an actual vacation, your best option would be to call it a night a little earlier than you usually would to give your body and brain a chance to rest. The earlier you fall asleep, the longer you’ll be able to rest before having to start your obligations the following morning. This means you’ll have to stop scrolling earlier than normal, even if there are a few TikTok trends that are really captivating your attention. Walk around your neighborhood Maria Markevich/Shutterstock Imagine for a moment that you’re in a foreign country with unfamiliar roadways. You’d most likely choose to walk as much as you can to take in the ambiance. You can do the same thing in your own neighborhood. Remind yourself of what it feels like to be a tourist exploring on foot by taking a one- or two-mile walk. Keep your eyes peeled to see if you notice amazing things you’ve never paid attention to before. You might run into a kind neighbor, have the opportunity to pet a friendly dog, smell fragrant roses in a garden, or even admire interesting homes and cars. There are health benefits linked to walking, as well. According to Mayo Clinic, going for walks helps you maintain a healthy weight, prevents various conditions, and improves cardiovascular fitness. If you’re not a huge fan of walks, think of it as a primer for your next vacation. Whether your next trip is to Europe, Disney World, or on a cruise ship, The Washington Post reports the best way you can prepare for it is to take walks that will build up some endurance. Cook cuisine from a different country Monster Ztudio/Shutterstock If you’re comfortable exploring international recipes, you can feel like you’re traveling around the world without even having to leave your kitchen (via Taste of Home). Have a location in mind that you would like to visit one day? Cook a traditional meal from that country. For example, if you’re interested in traveling to Italy, search for recipes for fresh, homemade pizza and delicious fettuccine alfredo. Cooking and eating these meals will make you feel like you’re there. You don’t have to be a bona fide foodie or food blogger to get excited about trying foods from other cultures. If you’re only willing to eat food from countries and cultures you’re familiar with, you’re limiting yourself from experiencing some of the most amazing delicacies available from around the world. After all, food is something that connects people from different places all around the globe (via Toast Fried).  Find a restorative practice 220 Selfmade studio/Shutterstock Going on vacation means you’re taking time out of your busy schedule to relax and unwind. If you’re stuck at home and unable to actually travel anywhere, restorative practices can put you in the right mind space. Meditation, yoga, and breathwork are only a small taste of restorative practices to consider.  According to Art of Living, meditation is beneficial because it leads to enthusiasm, inner joy, and peace. It brings your brain to an alpha state which promotes healing from the inside out. If you’re feeling weighed down by anxiety or you feel that you’re in need of some clarity, meditation is one of the best ways to solve those issues. Yoga helps improve strength, balance, and flexibility (via Johns Hopkins Medicine). When you practice yoga regularly, it relaxes you, helps you sleep better, and gives you more energy.  Breathwork is a holistic practice that’s been around for thousands of years, according to WebMD. It has an anti-inflammatory effect that quickly elevates your mood. Visit an unfamiliar local exhibit Zyabich/Shutterstock Local exhibits, museums, and art shows might open your mind to a feeling of curiosity and wonder. Travelers always have their eyes peeled to take in new, unexpected sites all around them. This is likely because when you’re on vacation and you’re in a new place, nothing looks familiar, which means everything feels exciting. Hill Aerospace Mus...

PCOS Awareness: Know How It Is Linked To Diabetes And Secondary Infertility Health Shots
PCOS Awareness: Know How It Is Linked To Diabetes And Secondary Infertility Health Shots
PCOS Awareness: Know How It Is Linked To Diabetes And Secondary Infertility – Health Shots https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/pcos-awareness-know-how-it-is-linked-to-diabetes-and-secondary-infertility-health-shots/ Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder among women of childbearing age. There are multiple side effects of PCOS. This disorder disturbs the body’s hormonal balance and results in irregular or extended menstrual cycles. PCOS causes follicles with immature eggs to form cysts which begin to grow inside the ovaries and not mature. The inability to develop mature eggs might interfere with ovulation and result in issues such as infertility. Causes and symptoms of PCOS PCOS is closely associated with insulin resistance and higher levels of the hormone testosterone. Numerous factors, including family history, insulin resistance, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, etc., have an impact on PCOS. PCOS may cause several problems such as fertility issues, infrequent or prolonged periods, weight gain, depression, excess body hair growth and acne, hair loss, hypertension and diabetes. With lifestyle changes and additional stressors due to the Covid-19 pandemic, India has seen a spike in PCOS cases in recent times. Obesity is a major driver of PCOS. Image courtesy: Shutterstock Relationship between PCOS and diabetes One in every sixth diabetic person over the world is an Indian. India is one of the top 10 countries with the most diabetics, with over 77 million individuals living with the disease. While diabetes is affecting people world over, it is becoming a greater challenge for women suffering from PCOS. Type 2 diabetes mellitus and PCOS have long been believed to be related. As per a research by All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), one in four women suffer from PCOS and over one in 10 women between the age group of 35 to 49 suffer from diabetes. A woman with PCOS experiences endocrine system disruption and an increase in androgen, often known as male hormone. It is also believed that high quantities insulin are produced by the pancreas as a result of insulin resistance by the insulin receptors, causing PCOS. Thus, women who develop PCOS as young adults are more likely to develop diabetes and, possibly heart problems in later life. Women’s capacity to conceive is negatively impacted by both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, which are both characterized by irregular or non-existent menstruation (oligomenorrhea) and/or secondary amenorrhea. These issues are all closely related to obesity. Diabetes can also affect fertility in women by delaying the onset of menstruation (or menarche). This can lead to high sugar, causing rapid and early ovarian aging as evidenced by pre-mature menopause. Particularly in women of childbearing age, diabetes is linked to irregular menstrual cycles. Thus, diabetes can impact the biological clock and limit a female’s reproductive lifespan. PCOS affects menstrual cycle. Image courtesy: Shutterstock Relationship between PCOS and secondary infertility: In simple words, Secondary Infertility is the inability to become pregnant for a second time. Secondary infertility is a serious issue that happens more frequently to couples than one may think. Hormonal imbalances (whether too high or too low) can cause the brain-ovary relationship to be disrupted. The ovary doesn’t get the word that it’s intended to release an egg every month if the brain doesn’t provide the right signals. Some of these hormonal abnormalities may manifest themselves later in life. Thyroid, pituitary gland, or a diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome are all examples of hormonal imbalances. Secondary (and main) infertility is frequently brought on by PCOS, which can interfere with ovulation. One should consult their doctor to determine whether they have PCOS when their periods are erratic or non-existent. Eat healthy, stay strong. Image courtesy: Shutterstock Prevention and care for PCOS To avoid the side effects of PCOS in the long run, women dealing with it should adopt healthy lifestyle habits. Regular exercise would aid in reducing insulin resistance in the body, fight obesity, and burn off extra sugar. For the body and mind to remain in good shape, a well-balanced nutritional diet rich in proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats, as well as lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, is essential. Getting enough sleep is essential for hormone regulation and stress reduction. Making such healthy lifestyle changes and choices can play key role in curbing hormonal imbalances in the body and reducing the risk of diabetes and or PCOS. It is also advised to consult your doctor for diagnosis and treatment plan, especially if one is planning to conceive a child.

49ers LT McKivitz Undaunted By Replacing All-Pro Williams – Martins Ferry Times Leader https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/49ers-lt-mckivitz-undaunted-by-replacing-all-pro-williams-martins-ferry-times-leader/ UNION LOCAL graduate Colton McKivitz will start Monday night at left tackle for the San Francisco 49ers against the L.A. Rams. Colton McKivitz is undaunted by the big void he must fill on San Francisco’s offensive line. With All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams sidelined for at least a few weeks with a high ankle sprain, McKivitz will be thrown into the starting lineup on Monday night for the 49ers’ showdown with the Los Angeles Rams. “I mean, no one’s going to be Trent Williams,” McKivitz said Thursday. “Probably the best tackle to ever play the game. So I’m not going to try and do anything he does or go outside my game. At the end of the day it’s football and the results are to get a win. That’s my biggest thing.” This isn’t the first time McKivitz has had to replace Williams in a key game against the Rams. He also had to start the Niners’ crucial Week 18 game against Los Angeles last season that San Francisco needed to win to get into the playoffs. McKivitz was far from perfect in that game but was solid enough for the Niners to have enough success offensively to win, helping McKivitz prove to himself, his teammates and coaches that he can play in the NFL after spending almost all his second season on the practice squad. “It definitely helped my confidence,” he said. “It could have been a lot different than if we had lost that game. To get a second chance and be able to build on that and have the confidence that they would throw me out there in that important of a game was huge for me. Then just building off of that has helped propel me to where I’m at today.” After starting three games as a fifth-round rookie in 2020, McKivitz admitted he didn’t have the proper level of urgency in training camp last year. That led to him getting cut before the start of the season and his time on the practice squad. But that performance against the Rams, when he was told at the last minute that Williams couldn’t play, has helped him solidify a spot on the team. “The game’s not too big for him,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “I just remember when we told Colton he was up and it was no big deal to him and he went out there and he performed. It was a huge challenge going against those two edge players they had and he just battled all game. Whether he gets beat or not, he’s going to be there every play and that always gives you a chance.” McKivitz said he’s glad to have a little more notice this time around as he is spending the entire week working with the first-team offense knowing he will start Monday night. McKivitz got extensive time at tackle with the starters in training camp this summer since Williams often was given time to rest and right tackle Mike McGlinchey was out with an injury. But replacing Williams will take a strong performance by the entire line, especially against a defensive front led by Aaron Donald. “We all have to step up and be aware,” McGlinchey said. “You can’t replace Trent. He’s a one of one player. But we do have good young depth. Colton has had a great year. His camp was excellent.” The Niners are pleased Williams’ absence will only be temporary after an initial scare that he had a more serious injury after the cart came out on the field Sunday night in Denver when Williams went down. Shanahan said Williams won’t need surgery and the Niners haven’t decided whether to place him on injured reserve. “I was fearing the worst,” McGlinchey said. “As soon as he stood up and was talking, I was like that was a little premature and we’ll get him back sometime this season versus the alternative.” NOTES: DL Arik Armstead still is bothered by plantar fascia in his foot and was not able to practice. … LB Azeez Al-Shaair (knee), RB Ty Davis-Price (ankle), TE Ross Dwelley (rib), WR Danny Gray (hip), DT Javon Kinlaw (knee) and TE Tyler Kroft (knee) also didn’t practice. … OL Daniel Brunskill (hamstring) and S Tarvarius Moore (hamstring) were limited. Chinese University Renames Engineering Department After Metaverse, Sets Up New Major – CoinGeek https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/chinese-university-renames-engineering-department-after-metaverse-sets-up-new-major-coingeek/ Home » Tech » Chinese university renames engineering department after metaverse, sets up new major Nanjing University of Information Science Technology has taken a significant step in its quest to be a distributed ledger technology (DLT) hub as it renames its Information Technology department after the metaverse. Under the School of Artificial Intelligence, the department changed its name to the Department of Metaverse Engineering after prior deliberation by members of the institution’s governing council. Dean of the School of Artificial Intelligence, Zhigeng Pan, noted that the decision was the first of its kind in mainland China that a faculty will be named after the metaverse. Details of the curriculum of the newly named department remain unclear, but Zhigeng noted that it will train master, doctoral, and postdoctoral students in different areas of the metaverse. Gleaning from Zhigeng’s speech to reporters, the Department of Metaverse Engineering will focus on metaverse research and identifying new applications for the technology that will be integral in providing a deep talent pool for firms in the ecosystem. The university had previously entered into an agreement with Yalong Intelligent Equipment Group to set up a Metaverse Research Institute. The institution’s moves in the metaverse are part of the global race towards the development of the industry. The metaverse has been described as the next iteration of the Internet, leveraging distributed ledgers to create a virtual world for users. Given the heightened interest in the metaverse, Citi predicted that the metaverse could surpass $10 trillion. “We estimate, in the report, the target addressable market (TAM) for the metaverse economy to be in the range of $10 trillion-plus,” remarked Ronit Ghose, Global Head of Banking, Fintech & Digital Assets. “Expert contributors to the report indicate a range of users of up to five billion” depending on whether mobile phone users are considered part of the count. China’s tango with the metaverse China latched onto the metaverse with enthusiasm that baffled pundits since the country’s regulators had imposed a blanket ban on digital assets. In fact, Chinese-based Pony Ma had publicly disclosed its extensive plans for the metaverse, called Quan Zhen, months before Meta (NASDAQ: MEA) made its big reveal. Chinese tech giants like Tencent, Huawei, and Epic Games have also laid bare plans for their versions of the metaverse in collaboration with some of the country’s educational institutions. Apart from private efforts, the Chinese government is also making significant strides in metaverse development. Local governments in Beijing and Shanghai have previously announced plans to use the metaverse to trigger economic growth in their cities. However, not all regional governments share the same stance on the metaverse. Watch: The BSV Global Blockchain Convention presentation, Masters of the Metaverse New to Bitcoin? India Freezes Bitcoin At Binance Amid Investigation Involving Crypto Exchange Wazirx – Regulation Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/india-freezes-bitcoin-at-binance-amid-investigation-involving-crypto-exchange-wazirx-regulation-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) says it has frozen more than 77.6 bitcoins that were transferred to Binance from Indian crypto exchange Wazirx. The freeze is part of a money laundering investigation into a mobile gaming application. Indian Authority Freezes Bitcoin Held at Crypto Exchange Binance India’s Directorate of Enforcement (ED) announced Wednesday that it has frozen 77.62710139 bitcoins under the country’s Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The ED is the Indian government’s law enforcement and economic intelligence agency. The freeze is part of the ED’s investigation into a mobile gaming application called E-nuggets. According to the announcement, the cryptocurrency was transferred from Wazirx, a popular Indian exchange, to Binance. The ED also tweeted a summary of its action. The law enforcement agency explained that “Aamir Khan, S/o Nesar Ahmed Khan launched a mobile gaming application namely E-Nuggets, which was designed for the purpose of defrauding [the] public,” adding: After collecting seizable amount of money from the public, all of a sudden withdrawal from the said app was stopped on one pretext or the other. Thereafter, all data including profile information was wiped off from the said app servers. The ED explained that its investigations have revealed that the accused transferred part of the illegally earned funds overseas via the Indian crypto exchange Wazirx. The accused allegedly opened a dummy account in the name of “Sima Naskar (Proprietor of M/s Pixal Design)” with Wazirx and used it to purchase cryptocurrencies, the ED further described, elaborating: Thereafter the said crypto currencies were further transferred to another account in another crypto exchange, namely Binance. “The balance of said transferred cryptocurrencies i.e. 77.62710139 bitcoins [equivalent to USD 1,573,466 (Rs 12.83 crore approximately)] at Binance crypto exchange has been freezed,” the ED wrote. Binance was believed to have acquired Wazirx in 2019. However, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) recently said that the acquisition “was never completed,” emphasizing that “Binance has never — at any point — owned any shares of Zanmai Labs, the entity operating Wazirx.” The ED froze the bank assets of Wazirx worth more than $8 million in August. However, earlier this month, Wazirx said that its bank accounts have been unfrozen. Following Wazirx, the ED froze crypto and bank assets worth $46 million of Vauld, a crypto platform backed by Peter Thiel. In August, the agency searched crypto exchange Coinswitch Kuber. However, the CEO of the exchange said that it was not related to money laundering investigations. What do you think about the ED freezing bitcoin held at crypto exchange Binance?
