This new study uses locamidazole (LAMZ), and while it did mimic physical exercise by reinvigorating muscle and bone, those effects were only observed in mice, thus far.  Anyone who follows research knows that what is observed in animals rarely translates to humans. Even if LAMZ was found to be safe and effective in humans, studies like that take years and years to be conducted and even longer to go through the regulatory standards and approval processes. On the off chance that all this happens, the well-documented benefits of actual physical exercise go well beyond its effects on muscle and bone tissue with the extent even reaching into mental health and longevity.  Realistically, if LAMZ eventually becomes available, treatments like this will more than likely be for those who are no longer able to exercise. For the rest of us, sorry to burst that bubble, but that good old-fashioned physical activity will remain the best way to maintain your healthy muscles, bones, and minds to enjoy those anti-aging benefits in the years to come.  There’s a pill for just about everything, but if you are looking for a prescription for health, pretty much every doctor will recommend that you follow a healthy lifestyle, which includes getting enough sleep, keeping stress in check, nurturing social bonds, having a positive mindset, following a healthy diet, and being physically active. There is no magic pill for the benefits that living a healthful lifestyle can provide, you need to put in the work. South Korea’s Industrial City To Reinvent Itself In The Metaverse – Forkast News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/south-koreas-industrial-city-to-reinvent-itself-in-the-metaverse-forkast-news/ Changwon, a South Korean coastal city on the southeast end of the peninsula, plans to recreate its industrial complex in the metaverse in an effort to promote the businesses and products. The project will make use of digital twin technology, which creates a virtual model that is an exact replica of a physical object to build an inch by inch copy of the physical complex. Changwon’s metaverse industrial complex will also be used to test out and predict future advancements in technology and environment.  The mid-sized industrial city with a population of a little over a million boasts 2,871 businesses as tenants in the industrial complex, which in total employs 122,625 people, according to the city’s official website. “The city of Changwon will win the first position in the fourth industrial revolution through focusing on rebuilding the industrial structure with mobility, artificial intelligence, hyper-connection [technology] and more,” said Changwon mayor Hong Nam-pyo at Changwon’s digital platform conference last Friday. The city will spend 13 billion Korean won (about US$9.07 million) to build the industrial complex in the metaverse under the supervision of the Korea Land and Geospatial Informatix Corporation, which is under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Changwon’s metaverse project isn’t the first major case in South Korea that has employed key technologies in Web3 to nourish the local life and economy. Seoul, South Korea’s capital city, last year announced a five-year plan to build a replica of the mega city on the metaverse to provide another avenue for citizens to access municipal services, and promote virtual tourism. The Seoul metaverse launched a beta test run of its first stage last month. Busan, the second largest city of South Korea, is hoping to grow its blockchain sector as a driving force for the future. Since being designated as a special blockchain zone in 2019, Busan is busily attracting companies and talents in blockchain. More recently, the city secured partnerships with Binance, FTX and Huobi to build its first city-backed crypto exchange. These developments follow the country’s open support for Web3 technology.  Earlier this year in February, South Korea’s finance ministry poured around US$185 million into building a metaverse ecosystem throughout the nation. The country’s science ministry hopes for South Korea to become a top-five metaverse leader of the world in just five years. The nation-wide initiative seems to have gained momentum as South Korea elected Yoon Suk-yeol as president, who believes Web3 will be a key growth factor for his country.

Cryptos Rise Even as Stocks Suffer Bitcoin and ether inched upward in Monday trading, countering equity markets that closed lower but remaining in the same narrow bands they’ve occupied for more than a week. The largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization was recently trading above $19,200, a more than 2% gain over the past 24 hours. BTC has been tangoing with the $19,000 threshold for eight days, dipping and rising according to the winds of the latest economic indicators. Ether was recently changing hands over its most recent support of $1,300, a more than 2% increase from the previous day. Most other major cryptos were largely in the green, with DOT and BSV recently up more than 6% and 5%, respectively. “Crypto markets are holding up quite well in the face of everything that’s going on globally,” Nauman Sheikh, managing director at Wave Financial, told CoinTV’s “First Mover” program. Equity markets, from which crypto prices have drawn their lead for much of the year, closed lower, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) and S&P 500 both falling over a percentage point and the tech-heavy Nasdaq dropping 0.6%. The declines came amid investors’ heightened recessionary fears that took root following a wave of hawkish interest rate hikes and economic data pointing firmly downward. The DJIA tumbled into bear market territory, meaning it has declined at least 20% from its previous peak. Despite the ongoing, macroeconomic turbulence, Jeff Dorman, chief investment officer at crypto fund manager Arca, took issue with “the convenient narrative” that ties “digital assets’ fates to macro.” In his Two Satoshis newsletter, Dorman wrote that the correlation was “short-lived” and applied only to bitcoin and “a few other bellwether cryptocurrencies.” “The future success or failure of digital asset investments will be more closely tied to user and app growth than to dot plots,” he wrote, adding: “But with the Ethereum Merge in the rear-view mirror and the Federal Reserve stranglehold transparently and clearly stated, what will be the next catalyst to drive digital asset prices? Hotel prices are up nearly 70% from last year with the highest prices per night in a decade as visitors flock back to a Singapore free of COVID-19 restrictions. The event, which features developers and executives from leading Web3 and other blockchain-related companies, underscores not only the global return to normality but also Singapore’s resurgence as a crypto hub and business hub. It also highlights the different roads that Singapore and its perennial rival, Hong Kong, which is playing catch-up, have been traveling. The visit, announced on Tuesday, comes days after North Korea fired a ballistic missile towards the sea and amid fears of a possible nuclear test as the Biden administration’s attempts at outreach to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have failed. Harris’ visit was publicly confirmed by South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo during a meeting with the U.S. vice president in Tokyo and was later confirmed by a U.S. official. I also gained experience as a software developer for the Social Impact Project with the Phoenix Ivy Council.  Using my knowledge of Java Scripting, HTML/CSS, P5, Visual Studio and GitHub, I designed immersive video game experiences targeted to the needs of the special education and adult disability community. Q: What are you most passionate about in your studies? A: Being a woman in tech has come with its own challenges. I have been placed in group projects with all male students, who often silence me in meetings when I try to share my ideas or who edit out my work in research essays. I knew I had every right to contribute as much as they did, and I wouldn’t let them determine the value of my work. I am focused and determined to succeed despite everyone’s doubts. I’ve been on the Dean’s List every semester of my college career while holding leadership positions in multiple organizations and becoming a National Hispanic Scholar. Benefitting from a loss by last week’s Class 9B No. 3 Sully Buttes (46-6 to No. 1 Herreid/Selby Area) and an idle week for No. 4 De Smet, the Jaguars’ 36-28 defeat of an Avon team that remained on the fringes of the rankings was enough to vault C-S from fifth to third in this week’s poll. Heading into an idle week of their own, the Jaguars earned 37 points, narrowly edging the 35 points Sully Buttes garnered, though top-ranked HSA and No. 2 Hitchcock-Tulare currently have the top places locked down at 89 and 73 points, respectively. The 2,000 respondents in a poll, called Portrait of American International Travelers and published by marketing agency MMGY, clearly feel their dollar will take them a lot further for their next trip. The survey, the third annual national poll of its kind, looked at the travel behaviors, spending habits, preferences and motivators of the respondents, and was carried out in July 2022. However, since then the dollar has considerably strengthened against the euro and sterling. MMGY describes “affluent” travelers as those coming from an annual household income of $100,000, and as someone who had taken at least one vacation outside of North America during the past three years, and who plans to take at least one vacation outside of North America during the next 12 months. Those U.S. travelers now plan to take an average of 3.8 international vacations in the next 12 months, up 72 percent from 2.2 in 2019. While overall interest in foreign travel is up, the number of destinations U.S. travelers want to visit is down compared to 2019. Europe, the South Pacific, the Caribbean and Canada are among the top destinations cited by U.S. travelers as places they want to visit. As expected, the study noted an overall increase in interest in visiting less-crowded destinations, and those that offer a range of outdoor activities. As well as the number of trips, the study found boomers were ready to splash out twice as much on each trip ($7,725 vs. $3,564). But millennials seem to have a little more stamina, and plan to go on more international trips than boomers, at 5.7 vs. 1.5, over the next 12 months. On an average basis, the American travelers anticipate spending a total of $15,364 on international trips in the coming year — a 16 percent increase on pre-pandemic spending predictions. “It’s clear that there is a willingness and growing appetite to travel internationally, but the important thing for marketers to note is that the American traveler looks and acts quite differently than they did before Covid-19,” said Cees Bosselaar, MMGY Travel Intelligence Europe managing director. Respondents were selected randomly, and the sample was weighted based on age, gender, ethnicity, household income, geography and education to ensure the data is representative of American high-income households, MMGY said. Society was growing increasingly fascinated by science fiction. Specifically, people were starting to get into UFOs and aliens. Over a decade after the famous War of the Worlds radio broadcast, film was starting to explore the outer cosmos, albeit with far more primitive resources. Spaceships were just small crafts held up by strings. Fearsome alien beasts were just guys in hokey rubber suits. The 1950s sci-fi movement in film was a sign of those times and one that the developers at Loomiarts and Fehorama Filmes were eager to recapture in Squad 51 vs. the Flying Saucers. The trailer above was a captivating watch. At first, one watches it waiting for the 1950s film effects to stop and for the gameplay to kick in. That’s when the realization sets in that the 1950s black-and-white, grainy film setting is the gameplay. That makes Squad 51 vs. the Flying Saucers one of the most visually riveting titles to come along in quite some time, which is why Shacknews reached out to the developers to learn more about its conception, its inspirations, and just how this space shooter came together. Shacknews: How long has the team been working on Squad 51 vs. the Flying Saucers? Giordano Gio, Executive Producer at Fehorama Filmes: Squad 51 vs. the Flying Saucers was envisioned by Márcio [Rosa] many years ago. He’s been developing it since 2016, first all by himself. Throughout the years, many partners came onboard. The cutscenes director Felipe Iesbick, the sound crew led by KF Studios, the composer Renan Franzen. Our film company, Fehorama Filmes, became partners with Loomiarts in this project in 2018, when we shot the live-action cutscenes. In 2020, we finally closed the deal with our main publisher WhisperGames, which allowed us to finally gather a larger team to finish the development of all the remaining levels and also to complete the post-production of our cutscenes, alongside Forno VFX, the company who filled the green screens with the landscapes, cityscapes and aircrafts that surround the actors. So, it’s been almost seven years, with a few setbacks, during a very difficult political and economical time here in Brazil, but we’re very proud of everyone’s work in the project, and happy to finally showing Marcio’s creation to the world. Source: Assemble Entertainment Shacknews: Before even getting into the “how” of how you put this together, I want to take a sidestep to talk about the research put into this project. What old-timey sci-fi movies and TV shows did you watch that ultimately helped with the game’s aesthetic? Márcio Rosa, Creator at Loomiarts: Our focus was cinema, not much TV. Sometimes, not even exactly from that era, we have some big famous productions from the 40s or 60s being referenced as some sort of an easter egg. But, of course, the sci-fis from the fifties were our main goal. Some with a more similar premise, like a war between humans and aliens, others with other kinds of menace, others with a smaller scale. Obviously, we have famous flying saucer movies like Plan 9 From Outer Space, Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, War of the Worlds, The Day the Earth Stood Still. Also, monster movies like The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, The Thing From Outer Space, It Came from Outer Space or other Jack Arnold’s movies, Godzilla and other of the movies directed by Ishiro Honda, Kaitiki and Planet of the Vampires, which was also directed by Mario Bava and was not exactly from this era, but has nice old-style visuals. Not of This Earth, This Island Earth, Forbidden Planet, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, When Worlds Collide… all of it had some influence. Shacknews: How did you do this, from a visual standpoint? How did you put this together, where you’re basically playing in an old movie with set pieces held up by strings, everything’s made of cardboard, and the monsters are people in cheap rubber suits? Rosa: Since we are making a game, it’s impossible to fully get away from a “digital looking,” which is the opposite of these handcraft, analog cinema from decades ago. But, as soon as we “get” what makes a movie from the 50s look that way, we tried to reproduce small little pieces of it into the game. Me and the cinematographer of the cutscenes, for example, worked together to create a shader to reproduce the film grain of the celluloid. We thought the Unreal Engine’s built-in effect was too digital. Although the game may run at 60 FPS, we had animations and some effects, like these post processing shaders, running at 24 or 12. We use disproportional pyrotechnics and exaggerated physics movements to simulate miniatures from an era where many professions still didn’t know how to record the footage in the correct speed to hide the usage of small objects. We have pre-rendered backgrounds in 2D to simulate mattes. We didn’t have enough budget to actually work with paints, but using static images already gave some idea of it. Sometimes, we had even to control the quality of the art direction; the fifties were before Kubrick’s 2001 with its very detailed tech stuff, so ships and futuristic gadgets were way simpler than today’s standards, more like plastic or wooden toys. Sometimes, [they were] even silly. The monster is a good example. We’ve tried to use animations and a proportion that fits a human inside the costume, but the company that made the monster for us had some initial difficulty to not make it too good-looking. After they gave us some alternative designs, the less cool for modern standards was chosen, and even after that, some small adjustments were made, like changing the very well made eyes to a more simple “two white spheres with a dot in the middle.” Shacknews: I’m just as impressed by the audio quality. You nailed those early days of raw, 50s era Hi-Fi audio. How did you approach the audio process for this specific project? Rosa: The sound department was handled by KF Studios, an external company that has great structure and expertise in filmmaking. They made many movies and TV shows along the years, but this was actually the first time they made a game. Still, they manage to learn all the tech that was new to them and implement the sound directly into the game. I think I worked close to them more than anyone else in this project, personally. We’ve discussed a lot of things, from technical stuff to artistic decisions. We used all movie references to create the sound design and music, but we also made adaptations when needed, since the game is much more frenetic and noisy than the references we had. Of course, our musician, Renan Franzen, not only created hours of music tracks, but also helped to put everything together. It was a very nice process that included listening sections in the studio, to take notes regarding the sound mixing or filters to be applied to make the game sound “old.” Source: Assemble Entertainment Shacknews: Tell me about the FMV cutscenes you put together. Where did you record them and what were the challenges in making it look like a production from 70 years ago? Gio: When Márcio showed us the project, we’ve talked about how the perfect way to do it would be by replicating 1950s physical effects and scenography, which was also the director Felipe Iesbick’s intention. However, as a small indie, almost-no-budget production in Brazil, it’d be a very difficult goal to achieve. We gathered a large team of artists, from great actors to makeup artists, to reach the best result possible according to Marcio’s references from the atomic age. Of course, at first it was a hard decision to shoot it all on green screen instead of building the scenery and it was a big challenge for everyone involved, since most of the cast and crew was working with chroma-key for the first time. When our visual effects artists from Forno VFX came onboard to give life to Marcio’s vision on the 1950s Planet Earth and Vega Corporation’s machinery, we were confident that we made the right choice. Shacknews: The instinct in gaming is to always go cutting edge. It’s to use techniques from today or, if you’re aiming for a retro audience, use ideas from the 80s and 90s. However, with this game, you want to go back even farther, so were there any specific game mechanics that you might have wanted to implement that you ultimately couldn’t because it wouldn’t fit with this style? Rosa: This is a very interesting question because it points to some aspects in which we actually walked a little away from the style of the 50s. See, my first idea was to make a SHMUP game. And then I decided the style. It was almost at the same time, but still, the genre of the gameplay came first. Movies from the 50s had a different pacing, only in the 80s the video-clip editing style became a thing. I think it may explain why so many TV, movies, games, only go back to the 80s. We, however, tried to keep the style of the 50s as much as possible, but not always 100% faithful to it. The game is more frenetic than anything from that era. So, instead of cutting some mechanic that didn’t fit, we slightly changed the style. Like I mentioned before, it applies to the sound too. To be honest, although I think it worked as intended, I’m not sure if I would do this if I started the development of the game today instead of 2016. Maybe I would change the mechanics instead of the style, without compromising it, of course. But this was the direction we had since the beginning, and the direction I passed to the entire team as well. Rosa: The main differences are the size and “weight,” which is a thing you feel because of the speed and acceler...

This is a $1.2 billion web3 company that said it was building a global wireless internet connection called the “People’s Network.” Helium COO Frank Mong wrote that one of the tenets of the Helium network is fairness, saying that “everyone has an equal opportunity to mine.” But Forbes has painted a very different picture of the company – an antonym of fair. Per its report, the People’s Network users have seen “vanishingly small crypto rewards,” claiming that, “Helium has made a handful of people disproportionately rich: its executives and their friends.” Lee Reiners, Policy Director at the Duke Financial Economics Center, who teaches cryptocurrency law at Duke Law, was quoted by the news outlet as saying that, “This thing was set up to enrich the founders and early supporters at the expense of everyday people.” Forbes claims to have reviewed “hundreds of leaked internal documents” and transaction data, and that it interviewed five former Helium employees, finding that, despite the project insiders promoting democracy and fairness, a majority of wealth generated in the earliest days of the project, when it was the most lucrative, went to these insiders. The authors claim to have identified 30 digital wallets that appear to be connected to Helium employees, their friends, family, and early investors. These wallets show HNT 3.5 million mined, which is almost half of all tokens mined within the first three months of the network’s launch in August 2019. Then, within six months, more than a quarter of all HNT had been mined by insiders — valued at some $250 million during the token’s peak last year. After the crash, the tokens are still worth $21 million. The authors claim that, “While Helium and its executives have publicly discussed their incentive plan — a scheme called Helium Security Tokens, or HST, which guarantees about a third of all HNT for insiders — they haven’t previously disclosed the additional windfall taken from Helium’s public token supply, worth millions, that was identified by Forbes.” This means that, when Helium rewards per hotspot hit their all-time high, a bit more than 30% went to the community, while insiders claimed the rest. Each hotspot earned an average HNT 33,000 in August 2019, while each hotspot today only earns around HNT 2 a month. So, the executives, friends, family, and certain early investors made windfalls in addition to the guaranteed dividends before earnings plummeted. The article also claims that some insiders exploited vulnerabilities known to the company to further fill their bags. ‘Nothing unreasonable’ That said, Amir Haleem, Helium’s co-founder and CEO, described the project on Discord, as “by far the most fair token distribution of any project that I’m aware of.” Haleem further said in an interview that approximately half of the initial hotspots were distributed to employees, and their family and friends. “None of those numbers feel unreasonable to me or egregious in any way,” he told Forbes. However, a hotspot linked to Haleem’s wife displayed the coordinates of a California home the couple owned, and five hotspots connected to this wallet mined HNT 250,000 in the network’s first three months – earning a total HNT 455,000 from mining rewards, worth $25 million at HNT’s peak price, and $2 million today. It is unclear when or if Haleem sold these tokens and he declined to comment, the authors said. Another example is that of COO Frank Mong. Per Forbes, in a single day in August 2021, a wallet that appears connected to Mong received almost a dozen payments – worth nearly $1 million – from two other wallets linked to him. The sum was moved to a Binance wallet. Asked if Helium should have disclosed to the community this additional insider windfall, Haleem replied that, “I don’t know why we would be asked to be in a position to reveal anything about these people…They took an enormous risk and a huge chance on paying money to build something.” Haleem claimed that some crypto projects reserve as much as 90% of initial token supplies for investors and team members, which Forbes could not substantiate, and Haleem allegedly did not provide an example. “That’s the playing field that we’re always on in crypto, whether rightly or wrongly,” he said. “The generally accepted reality is that someone has to start the network.” More than one alleged issue Helium also seems to be struggling to generate revenue from its network, claimed Forbes, adding that, between June 2021 and August 2022, just $92,000 in revenue was generated from data moving across the network – compared to the $250 million the parent company has raised from investors.
