Insights From Veteran Travel Hackers On How To Spend Less – Daily Independent https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/insights-from-veteran-travel-hackers-on-how-to-spend-less-daily-independent/ By Liam Gibson | Wealth of Geeks Stories about people jetting off around the world for next to nothing may seem like the stuff of legend, but a dedicated group of enthusiasts is trying to make the dream of super-low-cost travel a reality. Travel hacking — the art of traveling at as little cost as possible — is catching on in a big way. Yet, for the uninitiated, it can be a little intimidating — where should you begin your travel hacking journey? Two veteran travel hackers — Steve Cummings of the Frugal Expat and Zac Hood of Travel Freely — know a thing or two about getting low-cost itineraries off the ground. Here, Cummings and Hood share simple tips anyone can use to cut down a travel budget and valuable insights for those who are more serious about playing the long game with travel hacking. Let’s fly away Whether you are holidaying domestically or heading overseas, flying is usually how travelers get to their destination. Good travel hacking starts by cutting flights down, often leveraging a rewards program. Cummings advises first-timers to start close to home. “Sign up to the rewards program of the local airline based in your nearest city, for instance, in Atlanta, it will be Delta,” said Cummings. “Those are airline hubs, so you can increase your rewards every time you fly in and out of that hub,” he said. For those who are reliable with repayments and ready to buy more with credit, Hood recommends signing up for new travel cards. “If you spend $1,400+ each month on regular expenses you can put on a credit card, then the most efficient way to earn maximum miles and points on spending is by getting a new travel rewards credit card with a great signup bonus,” he said. “The value of the bonus alone will far outweigh the points and miles you will earn on the purchases themselves. The average spending required to earn a bonus on a great card is about $4,000 in three months,” he said. Considering the average American household spends $5,854 per month, this should be manageable for many people. Doubtless, some expenses are impractical to put on a credit card. Housing and income tax, for instance, are seldom paid this way (and together made up around 43% of household expenditure in 2020). Yet that still means the average household spends over $3,330 on other expenses, most of which could go on a card. Cummings also reminds travelers to “double dip on points” by booking through their credit card’s travel booking portal when booking a flight. He calls this a “points multiplier” since, with one transaction, you get points from the credit card company and points for the airline you book with. “You get miles for buying the tickets from the credit card as well as miles for flying,” he said. If you aren’t ready to pile up the miles, search for flights in the right place. “I always go first to Google Flights,” said Cummings. “You get the most available prices and then, once you select a flight, they take you to the airline’s website itself, whereas sites like Skyscanner direct you to OTAs (Online Travel Agencies).” Sleep on the cheap You can save on accommodation at your destination by leveraging hotel rewards programs. “You don’t need a credit card to start with these programs,” said Cummings. “Just pick a rewards program for a hotel chain you’ll use a lot. If you stick with one hotel, you can get lots of points and get extra upgrades.” “Among experts, Hyatt is the most liked for their consistent good value on award nights. They are also a partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards, which means you can transfer Chase points to Hyatt whenever you want. These kinds of points are called ‘transferable’ points,” he said. “As a result, if you have cards that earn Chase Ultimate Rewards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, then you don’t really have to choose between free flights or hotels until you do your bookings. This is not commonly known among average rewards travelers,” Hood added. Alternative modes of accommodation, like house sitting, could help you save more. “Check out websites like trustedhousesitters.com and housecarers.com,” said Cummings. “Sometimes you can even earn money, especially if they have a pet you need to care for. So you can get paid to stay on vacation!” Cutting further Even after securing deals on your flights and accommodation, there are still ways to cut daily living costs at your destination. “Look up bus and train tickets on local websites in local languages and use Google translate to make sense of it,” said Cummings. “You’ll find the fares are much cheaper. “Some countries have super cheap localized transport, which really adds to the experience. When in Guatemala, for instance, take the chicken bus, it’s pennies on the dollar for a ticket,” he said. “Also, look out for rental bikes that your hotel or guesthouse may offer. If you can see the sites in a day on a bike, that will save you too.” Regarding connectivity, travelers must try to avoid hefty roaming charges from their home carrier. “Google Fi is an awesome service to have if traveling internationally. Data is free and you can instantly use your phone once you land,” said Hood. Hood also encourages travelers to seek out debit card plans that waive all ATM fees or credit cards that waive all foreign transaction fees. Cost-down mindset Each person will develop a unique approach to travel hacking. “You have to be a deal finder, you need to go further and shop around for prices,” said Cummings. “Like when perusing restaurants in Prague recently, I looked at the beer price advertised outside and found this to be a fairly accurate indicator of the price of other items on the menu. This is something I’ll keep in mind next time.” %

Former Anchor Chris Kane Joins Delta Solar – Arkansas Business Online https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/former-anchor-chris-kane-joins-delta-solar-arkansas-business-online/ Chris Kane (KATV) Chris Kane’s career has shifted from “Daybreak” to sunshine. A former KATV morning anchor, Kane left the station in August and has joined Delta Solar of Little Rock as a business developer. He had spent a dozen years at Channel 7, starting in sports before shifting to morning news for more than a decade. Kane said in a news release that his career as a journalist had led to relationships with Arkansas community and business leaders, and he’s eager to update them on the benefits of renewable energy. “I’m looking forward to this new role to help expand Delta Solar’s reach …,” he said in the release. “Most importantly, I am excited to help deliver sustainable benefits for clients.” CEO Douglas Hutchings said Delta felt fortunate to add Kane to its roster. “We tend to have a different philosophy than most when it comes to developing and delivering on a solar project. Chris shares the same focus on long-term relationship-building and is a valued addition to the team.” A Little Rock native enchanted by the Jacksonville Jaguars after moving to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, at age 10, Kane got a radio and television journalism degree from the University of Central Florida in Orlando, but he never lost his fervor for the Razorbacks, and he covered them extensively.

Im Gonna Turn Some Heads: Weight-Lifting Women Talk Gym Health Culture The State News
‘I’m Gonna Turn Some Heads’: Weight-Lifting Women Talk Gym, Health Culture – The State News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/im-gonna-turn-some-heads-weight-lifting-women-talk-gym-health-culture-the-state-news/ Efforts to make the gym a safer place for women  Studio art sophomore Amanda Roberts and kinesiology sophomore Charly May said they have seen more women in the gym moving away from cardio and beginning to pick up free weights, but it’s still far and few between. “Say I walk into PowerHouse gym at 5 p.m.,” May said. “I’m the only girl in there and I can literally feel everyone staring at me.” After study upon study, it’s no secret that social media is prone to exacerbating beauty standards and contributing to our feelings of self-consciousness. But with the rise of fitness influencers and content online, some believe the nature of this influence is changing, and not necessarily for the better. “I’ve been in the lifting community for a long time and I feel like the content that (influencers) put out isn’t really anything that benefits people,” May said. “It’s kind of just them glamorizing it and only showing the good parts of it.” Last year, members of the Associated Students of Michigan State University, or ASMSU, drafted a bill that sought to put funds towards a strictly female and non-binary gym space on campus.  At the time, education junior (then sophomore) Ella Woehlke said that while female health was so important, she always felt uncomfortable in a “male-dominated” space such as the gym. Her ideal gym vision included fewer mirrors on the walls and, instead, more encouraging quotes.  The bill was tabled.  Political science-prelaw freshman Alex Seidleck said at the time, that she has had several uncomfortable encounters that discourage her from working out in a gym. If she had a safer space, she would work out more often, she said. Promoting accessibility to physical health is the purpose of gyms, but they fall short when women want to get strong safely.  “I have no issue walking in there and acknowledging that I’m the only girl and that I’m gonna turn some heads,” May said. “But … as a beginner, I think that that can be extremely daunting to a lot of women.” May said a more informative, beginner-friendly environment might excite more women and allow them to feel more comfortable. So many people, she said, walk into the gym and don’t know where to start. Instead of feeling supported to start their journey, they quit before they can even begin. “Don’t get too big.” May is determined to compete in a bodybuilding competition someday.  She lifts weights five days a week and regularly tracks her macronutrients. Above all else, the lifestyle associated with weight lifting is something that makes her feel her best, both mentally and physically.  The beauty standard, she said, is shifting away from the stereotypical quest to be as thin as possible.  But while weightlifting becomes more of a trend, May said, what women actually want to look like becomes a gray area. Just because beauty standards are shifting doesn’t mean that things are perfect — not by a long shot. Support student media! Please consider donating to The State News and help fund the future of journalism. May describes herself as having a “bulkier” muscle build, something she faces difficulties for. “I’ve had a lot of girls reach out to me in the past and be like … ‘I don’t really want to look like you,’” May said. “I’ve heard that probably like 50 times in my life. There’s a huge stigma behind the fact that lifting will make you bulky.” Roberts said that more content online nowadays, particularly on TikTok, promotes being muscular. However, there is still a long way to go in the way of equal representation for women who lift. “I feel like for women, there aren’t a lot of super muscular, big influencers out there to show that it’s okay … to have nice, big muscles,” Roberts said. “It’s mostly just being thin and petite and not taking up a whole lot of space.” Despite online fitness content intending to be seen as “motivating”, studies show young people who regularly view health or fitness content online are more likely to have an eating disorder. One study forces readers to consider the format of Instagram — an image-dominant platform where users interact with content largely because of how visually pleasing it is. It is not a text-based platform; there is less emphasis on what the poster says and more on what the image shows us.  Therefore, it’s easy for “wellness” posts, not often based on scientific evidence or the advice of a professional, to win a nod of approval strictly based on what users see – which might be a toned stomach, a vibrant nutrition infographic or copious plates full of nothing but chicken and rice.  Finding Balance Roberts chooses to never look at the number on the scale.  She goes to the gym three to five times a week. She tracks her calories to make sure that she intakes enough protein but does not follow a strict diet. Her overall goal is to “be stronger,” something she said she measures by how she feels rather than her reflection in the mirror.  “#food” is the 25th most popular hashtag on Instagram, and “#fitness” clocks in at 30th. Photos of perceived “healthy” food, however, garner the most popularity when posted with this tag. Studies show that 42% of consumers use social media to gather advice about what they’re eating.  Instagram use is also shown to be associated with a greater tendency to exhibit orthorexic behaviors. The National Eating Disorder Association defines Orthorexia Nervosa as an “obsession with proper or ‘healthful’ eating.” Individuals who engage in orthorexic behaviors may compulsively check nutritional labels, cut out entire food groups in the name of wellness or show distress when their “safe” food options are unavailable. They also might obsessively follow the advice of ‘health’ blogs on social media. The more people post about this kind of lifestyle, May said, the more toxic it becomes. For herself, being healthy is about balance, and this can look very different for people. “There’s not one definition of (being healthy),” May said. “Personally for me, living a healthy lifestyle is me mentally being happy and satisfied with myself and physically feeling good. I don’t necessarily go by the number on the scale or if I’m eating clean however many days in a row … it’s about balance.”

Monday Sports Betting News And Notes: Sep 26, 2022 – Saturday Tradition https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/monday-sports-betting-news-and-notes-sep-26-2022-saturday-tradition/ We’re kicking off week 5 in the Big Ten, and here are your Monday sports betting news and notes. Week 5 Big Ten lines are out All eyes are on the big road matchup for Michigan as they play at Iowa this next weekend. Michigan opened as a 9-point favorite. The biggest spread goes to Rutgers who will travel to Ohio this weekend. Illinois at Wisconsin (-9) Northwestern at Penn State (-22) Michigan State at Maryland (-4) Purdue at Minnesota (-8) Rutgers at Ohio State (-39) Michigan (-9) at Iowa Indiana at Nebraska (-2) Monday Night Football The Cowboys and Giants square off tonight. DraftKings has the Giants listed as a 1-point favorite, while FanDuel is showing a 1.5-point spread. The Giants are one of the few remaining undefeated teams in the NFL. The undefeated season will be on the line against a Cowboys team that has handled the Giants pretty much every year for the last decade. The Cowboys, however, were prone to give up some yards on the ground so far this season, so we’ll see if Saquon Barkley can do his thing. Other sports news Rejoice! The NFL is finally rethinking the Pro Bowl. This game has been unwatchable for years (though still gets tons of eyeballs). The game is being replaced with a week-long skills competition and even a flag football game. Will it be good? Who knows, but it was time for the NFL to try something different. Georgia Tech is cleaning house. Head coach Geoff Collins has been led go after a 1-3 start in his fourth season. Georgia Tech has been terrible, so this doesn’t come as a surprise. Who will replace Collins? Names being floated include Georgia’s OC Todd Monken and App State’s coach Shawn Clark. Sports Betting Legalization All eyes remain on Ohio as sports betting remains on track to launch on Jan 1, 2023. We know when sports betting will be live, but we don’t know when the sportsbook operators will begin offering pre-registration promos to attract Ohio bettors to begin signing up. We’re keeping an eye on it. Maryland remains a state that continues to confound sports betting enthusiasts. Sports betting has been legal in Maryland for some time, but has yet to launch. This past week, the state decided to allow sportsbook approval on a rolling basis, which creates a much more flexible environment for getting sports betting up and running within the state. With recent news, it now appears that there is a chance it could launch in the state in late 2022.

10 Coolest Justice Leaguers CBR Comic Book Resources
10 Coolest Justice Leaguers CBR Comic Book Resources
10 Coolest Justice Leaguers – CBR – Comic Book Resources https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/10-coolest-justice-leaguers-cbr-comic-book-resources/ The Justice League are the Earth’s greatest heroes. The team faces threats no other group could handle, and since its inception, heroes of all stripes and colors have called the team home. The types of League members range in power, genius, and coolness; however, they all add something to the team in their own way. Being cool is about more than saving the day. It’s a combination of factors; for example, having a great costume, an interesting attitude, great powers, and, of course, a good approach to heroism. The Justice League has given its members many opportunities to prove just how cool they are, whether it’s on the battlefield or beyond. 10 Batman Is The Most Goth Member Of The Team Batman has been a thorn in the League’s side almost as much as he’s been helpful. He sasses teammates and makes plans to kill them if they go bad, like in JLA: Tower Of Babel by writer Mark Waid and artist Howard Porter. However, it’s impossible to deny how cool Batman is. From his costume to his never say die attitude to the endless gadgets, Batman brings something to the League that no one else does. Batman is the overly theatrical Goth who’s a part of every friend group. He’s dramatic, dark, and can definitely make everyone miserable at times. However, he always comes through, doing it with a style and panache that’s unparalleled. 9 Superman Doesn’t Get Credit For How Cool He Is Superman is about truth, justice, and a better tomorrow, and he embodies these values without being dark or violent. He’s a hero of the highest order and cares for everyone, making anyone feel like the most important person in the universe. He’ll also help anyone with anything he can, as evidenced by Superman: Up In The Sky by writer Tom King and artist Andy Kubert. In this story, he traveled across the entire universe just to save one little girl. That’s what makes Superman so cool. There’s nothing he won’t do to save a life. No road is too far or a challenge too great. Superman is a classic hero, which can make him seem lame to some. However, there’s nothing wrong with fighting for truth, justice, and a better tomorrow. 8 Booster Gold Is The Class Clown Booster Gold often seems like he’s trying too hard sometimes. He doesn’t always know when to stop joking and uses his humor as a coping mechanism. He can get a bit annoying, but that’s how class clowns are sometimes. Thankfully, when the chips are down, Booster shines like the gold of his namesake. Booster might be comic relief, but he comes through when he needs to, having saved the universe multiple times completely on his own. As he stopped Mr. Mind from devouring the multiverse, he’s earned the right to be a bit flippant. He’s not always easy to be around, but the Justice League wouldn’t have it any other way. 7 Vixen Is A Supermodel And A Superhero Vixen’s first tenure with the League was during the Detroit years. She made a name for herself during this time, escaping the team’s bad reputation to become an important member of the superhero community. Working as a supermodel and using her fame to help the people of the African continent, she proved herself the rock star of the Justice League. She rejoined the team several times over the years and helped battle the fiercest enemies, including Solomon Grundy and the Legion of Doom. Vixen brought style to the team no one else had and proved how being a superhero was more than just fighting the big battles. She helps people in every way she can, and that’s the height of cool. 6 Black Canary’s Toughness Made Her Standout Among the best fighters on the planet, Black Canary holds a special place in the hearts of fans. She’s as tough as nails, and every villain who’s faced her, no matter how powerful, has learned not to underestimate her. Her canary cry is formidable, but most of the time she doesn’t need it. She’s a martial artist like no other, and that skill is what’s made her important to the Justice League. In her years with the team, she’s been on the front lines of every battle. She was finally given leadership of the team in Justice League of America (Vol. 2) #7by writer Brad Meltzer and artist Ed Benes, her hard work finally paying off. 5 John Stewart Stepped Into Big Shoes And Excelled John Stewart’s skill and courage made him a Green Lantern like few others. Taking over from Hal Jordan, he had a lot to live up to. Stepping into the League and replacing a founder wasn’t an easy road. He made his mistakes, like the destruction of Xanshi in Cosmic Odyssey, written by Jim Starlin and artist Mike Mignola. In fact, the end of the Green Lantern Corps saw him adrift for years, but its return showed him as the hero everyone knew he could be. Rejoining the League during the battles against Perpetua and the Legion of Doom, John Stewart proved why he was the perfect Green Lantern for the team. 4 Zatanna’s Attitude And Showmanship Makes Her As Cool As A Cucumber The Justice League is full of courageous heroes. However, Zatanna takes it to the next level. A perfect example of this was her most recent stint in the Justice League Dark. She was Wonder Woman’s second in command, helping her navigate the magic world, and she was integral in the defeat of the Upside-Down Man by absorbing his evil into herself. That’s why Zatanna is so cool. She’ll do whatever it takes to save the day, even if that means endangering herself. She also has an impeccable fashion sense and a theatricality born from being a stage magician. She’s taken over as the leader of the Justice League Dark, hitting the next level as a hero. 3 Green Arrow Does A Lot With A Little Green Arrow has a lot going for him as a superhero, but he’s always seemed like he shouldn’t fit in with the League. Green Arrow isn’t the most level-headed hero, but he’s always been incredibly tough. Somehow, Green Arrow has managed to hang with the greatest heroes on Earth using only a bow and arrow. Green Arrow’s courage and tenacity are what make him such a great Leaguer. He stays in every fight through sheer will and doesn’t back down. In Justice League (Vol. 4) #75by writer Josh Williamson and artist Rafa Sandoval, he forcibly inserted himself into the battle with Pariah’s dark army, ready to pay the ultimate price. That says everything about Green Arrow’s prominence in the League. 2 Kyle Rayner Joined The Team As The Cool Young Guy Kyle Rayner’s adventures took him all over the universe, which led to him joining the Justice League. He was the new kid on the block, trying to make his way with the greatest heroes in the universe. He was the anime kid who used his ring to create constructs unlike anything the team had seen before. Rayner could have easily been the blustery young hero, but he was able to back it up with talent. He hit his stride in JLA: Rock Of Ages by writer Grant Morrison and artist Howard Porter. Thrown into a terrible alternate future where he’d been transformed into a Parademon, he persevered and showed why he deserved to be in the League, all without his ring. 1 Wally West Grew Into An Amazing Hero Wally West is widely considered the best Flash. The former Kid Flash came into his own when he became a member of the Justice League during the conflict with the Hyperclan in JLA: New World Order by writer Grant Morrison and artist Howard Porter. As a result, he proved he was ready to shine on the biggest stage of them all. West managed to act as comic relief and also a formidable hero. He played both sides of the fence, which isn’t something easy to pull off. Even with a wife and kids, he’s still an amazing hero who proves having a family doesn’t hinder heroics. He doesn’t hold any crypto. California, New York and six other states are suing cryptocurrency lending platform Nexo for offering unregistered securities in the form of accounts that pay interest for cryptocurrency deposits, the states said in statements on Monday. New York’s action specifically accused Nexo of misrepresenting its registration status. “Nexo violated the law and investors’ trust by falsely claiming that it is a licensed and registered platform,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is demanding the company give up the revenue from its product and provide restitution to customers. “Nexo must stop its unlawful operations and take necessary action to protect its investors.” Switzerland-based Nexo hasn’t yet issued a comment in response to the state actions. The states – also including Washington, Maryland, Kentucky, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Vermont – filed individual actions targeting Nexo’s “Earn Interest Product” accounts. Nexo advertises the accounts as “high-yield,” and California noted the company offered annual interest rates as high as 36%. “These crypto interest accounts are securities and are subject to investor protections under the law, including adequate disclosure of the risk involved,” said Clothilde Hewlett, commissioner of California’s Department of Financial Protection and Innovation. Putin Grants Citizenship To Edward Snowden Who Disclosed U.S. Surveillance The Washington Post
Putin Grants Citizenship To Edward Snowden Who Disclosed U.S. Surveillance The Washington Post
Putin Grants Citizenship To Edward Snowden, Who Disclosed U.S. Surveillance – The Washington Post https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/putin-grants-citizenship-to-edward-snowden-who-disclosed-u-s-surveillance-the-washington-post/ Russian President Vladimir Putin granted citizenship on Monday to Edward Snowden, the former security consultant who leaked information about top-secret U.S. surveillance programs and is still wanted by Washington on espionage charges. Snowden, 39, was one of 72 foreigners granted citizenship in a decree signed by Putin. Snowden, who considers himself a whistleblower, fled the United States to avoid prosecution and has been living in Russia, which granted him asylum in 2013. Snowden was granted permanent residency in 2020, and his lawyers said at the time that he was applying to obtain a Russian passport without renouncing his U.S. citizenship. Snowden’s lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena, told the state-run news agency RIA Novosti on Monday that Snowden’s wife, Lindsay Mills, is also now applying for Russian citizenship. Mills joined Snowden in Moscow in 2014. They were married in 2017 and have a son together. Kucherena also said that Snowden would not be subject to the partial military mobilization that Putin decreed last week to help Russia’s flagging war in Ukraine as Snowden never served in the Russian army. Putin said only those with previous experience would be called up in the partial mobilization though there have been widespread reports of summonses going to others, including men arrested at protests against mobilization. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declined to comment on Snowden’s new passport, and instead referred questions to the prosecutors seeking his extradition. “So, since I believe there have been criminal charges brought against him, we would point you to the Department of Justice for any specifics on this,” Jean-Pierre said. Snowden’s revelations, published first in The Washington Post and the Guardian, were arguably the biggest security breach in U.S. history. The information he disclosed revealed top-secret NSA surveillance as part of a program known as PRISM and the extraction of a wide range of digital information. In 2017, Putin said in a documentary film made by U.S. director Oliver Stone that he did not consider Snowden “a traitor” for leaking government secrets. “As an ex-KGB agent, you must have hated what Snowden did with every fiber of your being,” Stone says in the clip. “Snowden is not a traitor,” Putin replied. “He did not betray the interests of his country. Nor did he transfer any information to any other country which would have been pernicious to his own country or to his own people. The only thing Snowden does, he does publicly.” In 2020, Snowden explained his decision to seek dual citizenship. “After years of separation from our parents, my wife and I have no desire to be separated from our son. That’s why, in this era of pandemics and closed borders, we’re applying for dual US-Russian citizenship,” Snowden wrote on Twitter at the time. “Lindsay and I will remain Americans, raising our son with all the values of the America we love — including the freedom to speak his mind. And I look forward to the day I can return to the States, so the whole family can be reunited,” Snowden added. War in Ukraine: What you need to know The latest: Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “partial mobilization” of troops in an address to the nation on Sept. 21, framing the move as an attempt to defend Russian sovereignty against a West that seeks to use Ukraine as a tool to “divide and destroy Russia.” Follow our live updates here. The fight: A successful Ukrainian counteroffensive has forced a major Russian retreat in the northeastern Kharkiv region in recent days, as troops fled cities and villages they had occupied since the early days of the war and abandoned large amounts of military equipment. Annexation referendums: Staged referendums, which would be illegal under international law, are set to take place from Sept. 23 to 27 in the breakaway Luhansk and Donetsk regions of eastern Ukraine, according to Russian news agencies. Another staged referendum will be held by the Moscow-appointed administration in Kherson starting Friday. Naturally, memberships in the tourism industry are nothing unusual. Consider travel credit plans that have a yearly cost but offer complimentary checked baggage as well as priority boarding whenever a reservation is purchased using the card. However, analysts claim that the pandemic’s push has motivated businesses to test out fresh approaches to marketing and enticing customers to travel. History has shown that complementary points or complimentary mile schemes are associated with tourism and travel. Clients are urged to devote money to paid services due to their financial stake in the outcome. Yet, there are services like Timeshare that offer subscribers access to the places of their choosing for a yearly fee. However, on occasion, they added a few more fees, which displeased their customers. Naturally, if I had to spend a substantial amount of money for this type of subscription and were faced with further fees, I would seek out methods to get out of my timeshare. But setting up a relaxing day together in Hawaii involves a lot more than enjoying a show on Netflix. The reality that traveling is indeed an uncommon transaction and even that excursions include a variety of components, such as lodging, renting vehicles, airlines, and attractions, is one of the difficulties. A membership approach may assist reduce some of the annoyance and difficulties involved in both planning and taking real trips. Examples include TSA PreCheck, which skips the regular airport lineup, and Clear, which enables subscribers to speed up screening at airport terminals. Numerous current membership providers offer savings and effectiveness. For instance, Scott’s Cheap Flights delivers members who spend $49 annually for subscription ticket bargains that range from 40 to 90 percent discount. Online comparisons of hotels, excursions, renting vehicles, as well as airlines, are available to vacationers, however, they require a while. Safara is one such company, and it will launch in the coming weeks on an invitation-only basis. The group gives a 10 percent discount on reservations at resorts including Public in New York as well as the Ned for London at its basic initial tier, which could be applied to subsequent visits purchased via Safara. Several memberships offer luxury-seeking customers what they want. Try Exclusive Resorts, which costs just one initial cost of $175,000 for something like a 10-year subscription and afterward offers vacations in any of its 350+ luxurious holiday houses throughout the world for $1,465 an overnight at locations that it claims usually begin at about $4,000. Membership solutions that make remote work easier have been motivated by the development of online travelers, particularly throughout the epidemic. Selina, which provides inexpensive accommodations, many of which include co-working areas, in 145 places around the world, launched CoLive in 2020. New Brewing Tasting Room Opens And Other Williamsburg-Area Business News – Daily Press https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/new-brewing-tasting-room-opens-and-other-williamsburg-area-business-news-daily-press/ Richmond-based Strangeways Brewing has opened its fourth brewing tasting room in Williamsburg in the High Street shopping area. Although it operates breweries in Richmond and Fredericksburg, no beer will be brewed locally. In addition to Strangeways’ own products, the Williamsburg tasting room on Richmond Road will offer more than 36 beers, including IPAs, Lagers, Belgians, Stouts, Porters, Sours and Wilds. Also available will be specialties and non-alcoholic beers, along with cider, spiked sparkling seltzer and wine. Strangeways founder Neil Burton has always been interested in beers and traveled the world tasting them. Initially, he wanted “to create a new brand of beer utilizing another’s existing brewing facility, often referred to as alternating proprietorship,” according to the company’s history. However, he found out that the law would now allow for such an arrangement. So, he worked to change the state law and it worked. However “by the time the bill had passed Virginia’s mushrooming craft beer industry had experienced historic growth and breweries no longer had the capacity to make their space available to others,” the history said. After more than three years of research and business planning Burton decided it was time for him to open his own brewery. So, in 2013, Strangeways Brewery opened its first Richmond location. In 2017, the company’s second brewery opened in Fredericksburg. A Strangeways Tasting Room opened in 2019 in in Richmond. Who Are You Calling An Unsmart Phone? – Electronics Weekly https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/who-are-you-calling-an-unsmart-phone-electronics-weekly/ After the distraction-free BoringPhone, for example, we featured the even more paired-down Mudita Pure. And now – back in the land of full-distractions – check out this Arduino-compatible cell phone. It’s Unsmart in its use of a rotary dial. How cool is that? Justine Haupt is the Gadget Master Extraordinaire behind the device – for the past two years, she’s been designing the elements of the phone. There are no vintage parts – every element is newly manufactured she shares. We’re talking custom springs, 3D-prints, injected moulded parts, all the gears, the dialler mechanism, etc. She also had to write the software library for the OLED display… Thanks to the Arduino team for sharing this via twitter: Justine Haupt shares a quick look at the new Rotary Un-Smartphone, an Arduino-compatible rotary dial cell phone: https://t.co/HVPY1FDRxy pic.twitter.com/QOy72B5f2Z — Arduino (@arduino) September 12, 2022 There’s full LTE connectivity once you slot in your pre-paid SIM card. Features of the phone, aside from the rotary dial mechanism, include the incoming call numbers being displayed on the screen when a call comes in, a real mechanical bell for sounds, a mode switch for making local calls, and the display of a contacts list on the rear ePaper display. You can also manually edit the contact list via the microSD card interface, where the relevant text list exists, there’s also an indicator of the battery strength and the external antenna can double as a stand. Blimey. Impressive. The MCU powering it all – the ATMega2560V – also runs an Arduino Bootloader for access, just plug it in with a USB-C cable. And it’s Open Source – KiCad, STEP and PDF files are all available. You can see the Unsmart Phone in action in the video below, and you can visit her Sky Edge company here. Available as a kit, she says she is taking pre-orders, aiming to start shipments in November. The five colour options are: white, beige, seafoam green, atomic hotline red and black.

Despite Financial Times FUD Bitcoin Is Not Crypto Bitcoin Magazine
Despite Financial Times FUD Bitcoin Is Not Crypto Bitcoin Magazine
Despite Financial Times FUD, Bitcoin Is Not Crypto – Bitcoin Magazine https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/despite-financial-times-fud-bitcoin-is-not-crypto-bitcoin-magazine/ This is an opinion editorial by Federico Rivi, an independent journalist and author of the Bitcoin Train newsletter. Would you say that soccer and baseball are part of the same industry because both playing fields are covered with grass and in both games a ball is involved? Would you say that Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are part of the same industry just because they are both in the digital realm and cryptography is involved in both? The analogy is obvious but still too many equate Bitcoin with cryptocurrencies, refusing to see the substantial differences. The latest example comes from the Financial Times, whose columnist, Jemima Kelly, wrote that “Bitcoin can’t be separated from crypto.” Kelly is no stranger to criticism of Bitcoin — back in 2015, she highlighted the fall in the price of bitcoin from $500 to $300 — but this does not mean that her articles are not worth analyzing in detail, even more so when published in major newspapers such as the Financial Times. So, “Bitcoin can’t be separated from crypto,” but why? Kelly provides a list of poorly-argued reasons that are worth dismantling. Ponzi Schemes And The Criteria Of Money “It doesn’t matter what bitcoin’s origins were — the people who push it now have the same financial incentives as those pushing any other crypto token. Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of bitcoin, might have intended it to be used as money, but that does not make it so — it fulfills none of the necessary criteria, and instead operates in a pyramid-shaped structure that relies on constantly recruiting new members.” Pyramid schemes are, by definition, structures that can only stand as long as new investors keep coming in to pay interest to the first ones, i.e., those higher up in the pyramid. The moment no new funds enter, the structure collapses. Kelly fails to explain in what way Bitcoin would collapse without new investors. In fact, we are in the midst of a bear market that started 10 months ago with loads of money flowing out of bitcoin. In such a scenario, the pyramid scheme should have collapsed by now. As I write, however, Bitcoin is still the most widely distributed network on the planet and its hash rate is at an all-time high. If Bitcoin is a pyramid scheme, why would this bear market be accompanied by hash rate all-time highs? Bitcoin works with and without new funds coming in every day and this is a key difference with the “crypto” world, in which rug pulls happen on a regular basis, as the website rekt.news reports. As for the criteria of money, Kelly forgets to specify what these are and how Bitcoin does not fulfill any of them. Although there is no universal consensus on how many key features money has, we can limit ourselves to highlighting the five main ones: store of value, medium of exchange, transportable, divisible, unit of account. Store of value: As inflation can be defined as devaluation due to monetary expansion, Bitcoin is technically and precisely a protection against inflation because of its fixed supply. It is even better than gold — the world’s most important store of value — in terms of stock-to-flow ratio, and it is therefore undoubtedly an excellent store of value. Medium of exchange: Although in Bitcoin’s history, scalability has created quite a few scars, today we are fortunate to have a protocol at our disposal that makes Bitcoin the best way to send money from one part of the world to another instantaneously and with almost non-existent fees. The Lightning Network is exactly what Bitcoin needed to become a medium of exchange. Transportability: Bitcoin is digital, anything to add? Divisibility: One bitcoin is divisible into 100 million sats. The Lightning Network also supports millisats, so one bitcoin can be divisible into 100 billion units. Try that with dollars. Unit of account: This is the only feature not yet achieved in Western economies because of bitcoin’s volatility, due to its ongoing price discovery phase that is likely to last for a few more decades. However, this does not mean that bitcoin is not already a much more reliable unit of account in many developing countries, where local currencies have fallen into hyperinflationary spirals. Decentralization FUD “Bitcoin is not in fact decentralised — not only do miners group together to form ‘mining pools’ but wealth is also hugely concentrated. On Tuesday, MicroStrategy announced that it had bought another 301 bitcoins, meaning this company alone now holds almost 0.7 per cent of the entire supply.” Mining pools are not football teams and there are three considerations that Kelly omitted: Individual miners can break away from one pool and join another at any time should they feel that one is gaining too much power. If, until now, there has been the danger of transactions being censored by a pool — since it is the pool that writes the candidate block and can therefore theoretically choose which transactions to include and which to exclude — with Stratum V2 this problem is being resolved because each individual miner will be able to write its own candidate block. In the end, pools are groups of individuals acting for their individual interests. However undesirable it may be, a large hash rate controlled by a single miner does not give any power over the rules of the protocol, which are enforced by the individual nodes in the network, as demonstrated in the Blocksize War and in the beauty of proof of work. As for MicroStrategy, Kelly has probably made a misguided analogy with the fiat world, where power and money go hand in hand. There, wealth and the ability to influence the rules of the system are directly proportional, a bit like in the proof-of-stake system, which is nothing but the crypto transposition of the current world. In Bitcoin, things work differently: as long as an individual runs a full Bitcoin node in a remote village in Kenya, even without holding any bitcoin, they have exactly the same amount of power that MicroStrategy has over Bitcoin (only if the company runs a full node, obviously — otherwise the individual has more power). Innovation And Energy FUD “…a ‘first-mover advantage’ does not always last. Other crypto tokens already have various features that bitcoin does not, and there has been renewed talk of a ‘flippening’, in which Ethereum’s value overtakes that of bitcoin due to the former’s switch to a less carbon-intensive form of mining.” What exactly these features might be is not specified. Maybe smart contracts? It would be enough to study what is happening with the layers following Bitcoin’s blockchain: the Lightning Network, RGB, Taro, Fedimint, Liquid, OmniBolt, Sphinx and tbDEX, just to name the best known. As for “carbon-intensive” mining, a lot of pages could be filled to disprove this idea. For the sake of this article, I will just show the data from the latest report by the Bitcoin Mining Council, which in July found that 59.5% of the energy used by the Bitcoin network comes from renewable sources, and that although Bitcoin consumes 0.15% of the energy produced globally, it is responsible for only 0.086% of CO2 emissions, and is therefore much greener than the average global production of goods and services. This trend will continue, given the incentive of miners to use low-cost energy sources. As Nic Carter put it: “Bitcoin mining is converging with the energy sector with amazing rapidity, yielding an explosion of innovation that will both decarbonize Bitcoin in the medium term, and will dramatically benefit increasingly renewable grids.” Bitcoin mining will dramatically benefit renewable energy grids. The idea that the first-mover advantage does not last forever is also wrong. There is one key fundamental feature that allows Bitcoin to enjoy this constant advantage: scarcity or, to be more precise, finiteness. Bitcoin is finite, cryptocurrencies are not. And even if one were to use Bitcoin’s code by creating an identical copy, the first Bitcoin would be the original one: scarcity cannot be re-created once it has been discovered. How Many Bitcoins? (Spoiler: Just One) “Finally, there is not even agreement on what bitcoin is. For the vast majority it is the digital coin also known as ‘BTC’, currently changing hands at around $19,000. But there are other versions that have split off, such as the one promoted by Craig Wright, the man who claims to be Satoshi and who says BTC is a scam”. This is a highly-contradictory sentence. If the “vast majority” agrees that Bitcoin is one thing, then there is an agreement, even if some megalomaniac with almost no following calls himself Satoshi Nakamoto and wants his token to be considered the real bitcoin. And in any case, when it comes to Bitcoin, where there is no single authority to provide certificates of authenticity, there is always a final judge: the market. Indeed, BTC is agreed upon by the free market, although many Western countries have now forgotten what that is. This is a guest post by Federico Rivi. Iran has cracked down on the biggest demonstrations since 2019 sparked by the death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini on Sept. 16 after she was detained by morality police enforcing the Islamic Republic’s strict restrictions on women’s dress. The case has drawn widespread condemnation. Canada will impose sanctions on those responsible for the death of Amini, including Iran’s morality police unit and its leadership, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com “We’ve seen Iran disregarding human rights time and time again, now we see it with the death of Mahsa Amini and the crackdown on protests,” Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa. Iran said the United States was supporting rioters and seeking to destabilise the Islamic Republic. “Washington is always trying to weaken Iran’s stability and security although it has been unsuccessful,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani told Nour news, which is affiliated with a top security body, in a statement. On his Instagram page, Kanaani accused the leaders of the United States and some European countries of abusing a tragic incident in support of “rioters” and ignoring “the presence of millions of people in the streets and squares of the country in support of the system”. ENVOY SUMMONED Also on Monday, Germany summoned the Iranian ambassador in Berlin to urge Tehran to stop its crackdown and allow peaceful protests. Asked about the possibility of further sanctions on Tehran in response to the violence, a German foreign ministry spokesperson had earlier said, “we will consider all options” with other European Union states. read more Last week, the United States imposed sanctions on Iran’s morality police over allegations of abuse of Iranian women, saying it held the unit responsible for the death of Amini. Students from the Dentistry Faculty of the University of Tabriz, with the exception of the emergency department, took part in a strike on Monday and refused to participate in classes, said the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRNA), a news site by a collective of Iranian human rights advocates. The strikes were conducted to protest against widespread arrests of students and forceful encounters with security forces in Iranian universities, it said. On Sunday, Iran summoned the British and Norwegian ambassadors over what it called interference and hostile media coverage of the unrest. STRIKE CALL The anti-government protests are the largest to sweep Iran since demonstrations over fuel prices in 2019, when Reuters reported 1,500 people were killed in a crackdown on protesters – the bloodiest bout of internal unrest in the Islamic Republic’s history. At least 41 people have been killed since Sept. 17, according to state TV. President Ebrahim Raisi has said Iran ensures freedom of expression and that he has ordered an investigation into Amini’s death. A leading Iranian teachers’ union, in a statement posted on social media on Sunday, called for teachers and students to stage the first national strike since the unrest began, on Monday and Wednesday. Women have played a prominent role in the protests, waving and burning their veils. In a video circulating on social media, the sister of a man killed in the anti-government demonstrations, Javad Heydari, cut her hair on his grave in defiance of Iran’s Islamic dress code. Reuters could not verify the authenticity of the video. The state has organised rallies to try to defuse the crisis. Although the demonstrations over Amini’s death are a major challenge to the government, analysts see no immediate threat to Iran’s leaders because the elite security forces have stamped out protests in the past. Iran has blamed armed Iranian Kurdish dissidents of involvement in the unrest, particularly in the northwest where most of Iran’s up to 10 million Kurds live. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards launched an artillery and drone attack on Iranian militant opposition bases in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq, semi-official Tasnim news agency said. Developing Technology To Keep Nuclear Stockpile Safe Secure And Reliable Mirage News
Developing Technology To Keep Nuclear Stockpile Safe, Secure And Reliable – Mirage News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/developing-technology-to-keep-nuclear-stockpile-safe-secure-and-reliable-mirage-news/ Phil Pagoria synthesizes a new compound at the Energetic Materials Center, 1997. Work at the center includes simulations and experiments to better understand the fundamental physics and chemistry of high explosives and assess how they perform and age in nuclear weapons, and provides important technologies to stockpile stewardship. The last nuclear test, code-named Divider, took place 30 years ago, on Sept. 23, 1992. That year, President Bush declared a temporary moratorium on nuclear testing, which became permanent in 1995, during the Clinton administration. This ending of the era of nuclear testing coincided with a Presidential announcement of the beginning of stockpile stewardship. As the decision to potentially halt nuclear testing approached, the nuclear security establishment (NSE) provided explicit analysis of what could be done with limited tests, continued tests at lower yields and under a no-test regime. Once the decision was made to end testing, it became clear that the plans for a non-testing regime needed to be further developed to ensure we could maintain the safety, security and reliability of the nuclear stockpile without testing. Leaders from the Department of Energy (DOE) and Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos and Sandia national laboratories, convened to develop a complete strategy and map out an R&D effort that would come to be known as the Stockpile Stewardship Program (SSP). Its mission was ensuring the readiness of the nation’s nuclear deterrent force without nuclear tests. During the era of design and test, nuclear weapon designers could detonate weapons underground, measure their explosive yields and other physical parameters and adjust their designs to produce weapons that met the Department of Defense’s (DoD’s) requirements. Without testing, how would they know these devices would work if they were ever fired? “The [SSP’s] goal would be to attain sufficiently detailed scientific understanding of the nuclear explosive process to discover, comprehend, and correct any anomalies that might occur during the lifetimes of the stockpile weapons…,” wrote Victor Reis and two co-authors in a 2016 Physics Today article. Reis, former DOE assistant secretary of defense programs, was the primary architect of the Science-Based Stockpile Stewardship (SBSS), later known as the SSP – designed with the help and advice of experts throughout the nuclear security enterprise. Stewardship consists of performing surveillance on the nuclear stockpile, assessing its readiness through scientific and technical means, designing and manufacturing replacement limited-lifetime components and developing experimental platforms to assess our stockpile vulnerabilities and hardening as applied to threat environments. Each year, the three nuclear security laboratories participate in the Annual Assessment Process. After thorough technical evaluations, each of the three laboratory directors sends a letter to the secretaries of Energy and Defense assessing the condition of the stockpile. Based on these letters and other input, the secretaries prepare a joint memorandum to the president concerning the safety and reliability of the stockpile and whether a resumption of nuclear testing is needed. To annually assess the stockpile, the labs would need to develop new tools and technologies for determining the condition of weapons and for advancing scientific discovery to resolve any unknowns discovered in surveillance – for example, regarding issues that might impact the performance of nuclear devices. Their challenge was to develop the needed new tools and increased understanding at a pace faster than concerns about aging weapons arose. They also would have to ensure that a trained workforce of people with knowledge and experience in a wide variety of fields would be available in perpetuity to perform the work. According to Bruce Tarter, former Laboratory director (1994-2002), the creation of the SSP was a long, difficult, sometimes dramatic process, full of twists and turns. Tarter is the author of The American Lab, a history of Livermore that covers the story of stockpile stewardship through 2010. The Program’s achievements were indispensable to keeping the stockpile in readiness and the nation secure during the post-Cold War era. The past 30 years have been an unprecedented time of technology development and scientific discovery. A few of its successes are reviewed in this series of articles. Twin pillars – experiment and simulation Experiments addressing the behavior of matter at high energy densities, and the simulation of nuclear explosions using high-performance computers (HPC), are the twin pillars upon which much of the assessment of the nuclear stockpile rests. Successful stewardship requires that the two activities support each other’s advancement – the computer simulation models the current understanding of the physics taking place within a nuclear device as it detonates, and lab-based experiments provide corrective, reality-based data that improve the models’ predictions. The laboratories needed to develop new technologies to carry out both. “In terms of technology, from the Lab’s point of view, almost everyone would start at computing, computing, computing,” said Tarter. “We knew by the early 1990s that the computers you would need for stewardship would require parallel computing.” The beginning of stewardship roughly coincides with a paradigm change in HPC, from specialized, expensive single-processor computers to parallel computers built from many central processing units (CPUs). “The change came when we realized we could leverage commodity technology like chips for desktops and servers,” said Rob Neely, the program director for the Weapons Simulation Computing Program, who began his career at Livermore around the beginning of this change. “These are cheap now, so we no longer had to buy specialized computers. Now we could strap together these processors and learn how to do parallel computing.” To make the transition to parallel computing, DOE funded the Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative (ASCI), now called Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC). The program funded the development of progressively more powerful parallel computers and research to develop software for them. The Laboratory’s computing researchers began with a 24-CPU system, and subsequent systems eventually to hundreds and then thousands of CPUs. The IBM BlueGene/L, with more than 131,000 CPUs, was installed at the Lab in 2005. Inexpensive relative to the 596 petaflops (a thousand million million floating point operations per second) of computing power it delivered, BlueGene/L revolutionized simulation in stewardship, making possible studies such as molecular dynamics simulations of materials aging within nuclear devices, requiring days rather than weeks of computing time. Computer simulations must analyze the complicated physical movements of atoms and molecules according to physical laws. The simulations are used to understand the properties of materials in detail (e.g., the equation-of-state) and dynamic phenomena such as turbulence, which is essentially three-dimensional (3D) in nature. The challenge has been, traditionally, to account for the physics of 3D phenomena in 1D and 2D hydrodynamics codes, which are used to understand weapon performance – often through adjustable parameters. “Repeatable hydrodynamics simulations have been very important to stockpile stewardship,” said physicist Richard Ward, who began his career at Livermore as a weapon designer in 1982. “They’re important for understanding the complex hydrodynamics taking place at the material interfaces – what’s happening there and how materials mix … When I came to the Lab, a big two-dimensional calculation divided the simulation of a process into thousands of zones, not enough to do full-system calculations. Now we can model in three dimensions, with several orders of magnitude more zones – we can model things in so much detail.” “Livermore’s approach to HPC has led the way nationally because we pay close attention not just to codes,” explains Brad Wallin, principal associate director for Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI), “but to industry partnerships on HPC developments in the marketplace, and to our infrastructure – for example, the Exascale Computing Facility Modernization.” The recently completed ECFM upgrades the Livermore Computing Center by significantly expanding its power and cooling capacity in anticipation of delivery exascale supercomputing hardware. Rise of exascale computing Parallel computing has run its course because larger systems would use too much electrical power to be practical. “This has led to the exascale computing program,” said Neely. “This new architecture is based on a computer node consisting of a CPU with a graphics processing unit (GPU). Nodes of this construction now form the basis of this heterogeneous architecture.” El Capitan, Livermore’s first exascale system, will provide 2 exaFLOPs (2 billion billion floating point operations per second) of power and arrive in 2023. The necessary second element of computing’s application to stewardship has been the development of parallel software codes, and now, software codes for the exascale architecture. Thirty years of code development has resulted in hydrodynamics software, which is used to simulate how materials behave under the high temperatures and pressures of a nuclear detonation. The challenge in algorithms for parallel software is to keep the many processors operating efficiently and in sync “talking to each other” when important physics phenomena have to be modeled on different timescales and spatial resolutions, at differing locations in the device. “Livermore is...

Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico in the United States. It is a bustling cultural hub with everything from fantastic boutique shopping and mouthwatering cuisine to beautiful performance venues and historic buildings that harken back to the city’s long and storied past. UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network also lists Santa Fe as one of the world’s top art capitals because of the city’s abundance of museums and public displays of visual art. Some of Santa Fe’s cultural highlights include the historic Santa Fe Plaza, the Palace of the Governors, the annual Fiesta de Santa Fe, and a wide range of restaurants providing authentic New Mexican food and hosting live New Mexican music performances. The city also contains, among many others, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, a Chuck Jones gallery, and modern art collectives such as Meow Wolf. Hikers and explorers will discover breathtaking mountain scenery and rich pine forests outside Santa Fe. At the height of 7,000 feet, Santa Fe’s weather makes it the perfect year-round vacation. However, the most excellent time to visit a place varies on one’s preferred activities; therefore, here is a handy reference to the best months to visit Santa Fe based on various activities. The Summer And Fall Seasons Are Perfect For Art Lovers Santa Fe experiences its busiest tourist season throughout the summer and early fall, especially in July, August, and September. The New Mexico monsoon season, which begins in July and lasts until September, is one of the most beautiful times of the year. With all the flowering wildflowers, exploring the city is a visual treat. The summer rain, which can pour even when the sun is out, is another cherished draw. Santa Fe celebrates its reputation as an art mecca by hosting some of the most illustrious art fairs in the United States every summer. Experience the third largest art market in the United States during Santa Fe Art Weeks. The Santa Fe Art Show is an annual event at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center and features a fantastic collection of works by modern and contemporary artists. Original works of art from museums and galleries worldwide are on display. However, hotels, flights, and excursions like tours increase prices during the peak season. Visitors should book in advance six months to a year to avoid paying peak season rates. As many people who own second homes in Santa Fe tend to visit during the summer for the cultural activities that take place there, the city might feel particularly congested at this time. December Is The Best Month To Experience The Timeless Multicultural Traditions Of Santa Fe. December in Santa Fe is great for people who want milder temperatures, fewer crowds, and cheaper hotel rates. Santa Fe’s winter holidays are bright with cheer and celebration, and Farolitos and trees decked out in holiday lights set the city aglow. In this last month of the year, the city comes alive with festive cheer thanks to caroling, parties, open houses, and community events. There is no better place to witness the beautiful fusion of Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo traditions into a spectacle that the whole family can enjoy. Take a stroll through a magical garden illuminated by brilliant displays of light. Attend a performance by some classic and much-loved marionettes. Aspen Santa Fe Ballet puts up “The Nutcracker,” a ballet made famous by Tchaikovsky, every year on the first weekend of December. Embark on a fantastical adventure with Clara and the Nutcracker Prince to the Land of Snow and Land of Sweets, where they are greeted by the lovely Sugar Plum Fairy and a host of other characters, including dancers in traditional garb from Russia, Spain, and Arabia. January Through April Are Ideal Months For Anyone Seeking Peace & Quiet. Visiting Santa Fe in the winter is a great idea. Even though it’s the low season for visitors, everything from attractions to stores to restaurants is just as good, if not better, than during the busy months. Even though Santa Fe isn’t the first place that comes to mind when thinking of winter activities, the ski resorts in the area are among the best in the country. In particular, the terrain at Ski Santa Fe is great for beginners and families with young children. From January onward, all the way until Memorial Day, the days are long, and the nights are quiet. At the start of January, Native Americans celebrate the Transfer of Canes (the passing of leadership from one governor to the next) with traditional Pueblo dances on New Year’s Day. Many northern Pueblos celebrate in and around Santa Fe with traditional dances such as turtle, maize, and cloud. February, March, and April are the least crowded months to visit Santa Fe. Once the winter’s hard freeze has ended, the weather begins to warm, bringing many visitors to the city on Easter. Getting To Santa Fe: Direct flights from Denver, Dallas, and Phoenix land daily at Santa Fe Municipal Airport. Travelers can also land at Albuquerque International Sunport, which is about 45 minutes distant from Santa Fe. The Santa Fe Place Mall and the Alvarado Transit Station, where Amtrak and Grayhound stop, are both within easy reach thanks to the ABQ Express Shuttle, which runs three times daily. Where To Stay: Hotel Santa Fe, Hacienda & Spa is a tradition-centric retreat that invites guests to experience genuine hospitality in the city’s only Native American-owned hotel. %

Execs: US Internet Casino Gambling Is Poised For Expansion – Arkansas Business Online https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/execs-us-internet-casino-gambling-is-poised-for-expansion-arkansas-business-online/ ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — As sports betting has swept across the country with states, casinos and consumers eagerly embracing a new gambling market, internet casino games have grown much more slowly. But the online casino market has tremendous potential for growth and expansion, participants in a major casino conference said Friday. Speaking at the East Coast Gaming Congress, executives of online gambling companies and their technology partners said the rapid growth of sports betting has provided a ready-made infrastructure and regulatory apparatus for online casino games. So far, such gambling is legal in only six states: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, West Virginia, Delaware and Connecticut. But panelists at the conference predicted three or four additional states could soon adopt internet gambling, including Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and New York. In addition, more than a dozen states sell lottery tickets over the internet, according to James Carey, executive director of the New Jersey Lottery. “I’m confident there’s plenty of room for growth,” said Jeffrey Millar, commercial director of North American operations for Evolution, an online casino content provider. “The growth in this industry is still in its infancy stages in the U.S.” added David Rebuck, New Jersey’s top gambling regulator as director of the state’s Division of Gaming Enforcement. Richard Schwartz, CEO of Chicago-based online gambling company Rush Street Interactive, said states that already have legal sports betting are strong candidates to adopt online casino games as well. “They already have regulators in place,” he said. “They have servers in place. It’s quicker to start up a casino addition.” Currently, 31 states plus Washington, D.C., offer legal sports betting, with several more expected to do so soon. Since it launched internet gambling nine years ago, New Jersey’s casinos have won $4.79 billion from gamblers online, according to the American Gaming Association, the casino industry’s national trade group. That’s nearly twice the $2.47 billion Pennsylvania casinos have won online since July 2019. Michigan has won $2 billion online since Jan. 2021; Connecticut $199.7 million since Oct. 2021; West Virginia $137.4 million since July 2020; and Delaware $42.2 million since Dec. 2013. Nevada offers online poker but does not break out that revenue separately from the in-person revenue casinos report to the state. Those figures are for online casino games only, and do not include sports betting revenue, which is reported separately. New Jersey is on the verge of extending its law permitting internet gambling for another 10 years, and during Thursday’s opening session of the casino conference, the state’s Democratic governor, Phil Murphy, promised he would sign the bill it if passed. A 2018 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in a case brought by New Jersey cleared the way for all 50 states to offer legal sports betting should they choose to do so. With that rapid expansion came an expectation in some quarters that internet gambling would almost automatically grow at a similarly rapid pace. “That didn’t happen,” said Howard Glaser, head of government affairs and legislative counsel at Liught & Wonder, the successor company to the gambling tech firm Scientific Games. He said there are lingering concerns, particularly among some state legislators, that internet gambling could cannibalize revenue and customers from brick-and-mortar casinos — even though the gambling industry itself has established that has not been the case. Casinos initially had the same concerns when New Jersey launched internet gambling in Nov. 2013. Luisa Woods is vice president of Delaware North, the gambling, hospitality and sports company that owns casinos in New York, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, West Virginia and Ohio. She previously was head of digital operations for Atlantic City’s Tropicana casino in 2013. “My first job was selling the company that I am not here to compete with your business; I’m here to help it grow,” she said. “We integrated the brand, we created loyalty accounts for every single remote customer. We had people who would show up at the property for the first time and have a host already assigned to them.” ___ All contents © copyright 2022 Associated Press. All rights reserved.

1 Commits $15 Million To The Global Fund Accelerating The Fight To Defeat HIV, TB And Malaria – Africa.com https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/1-commits-15-million-to-the-global-fund-accelerating-the-fight-to-defeat-hiv-tb-and-malaria-africa-com/ Anglo American, together with the Anglo American Foundation, have pledged $15 million to support the Global Fund to end HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria and build resilient systems for health and pandemic preparedness. The pledge was delivered in New York, during the Global Fund’s Seventh Replenishment week. The health and well-being of employees and host communities form an integral part of Anglo American’s Sustainable Mining Plan. Built around three major sustainability pillars of Healthy Environment, Thriving Communities, and Trusted Corporate Leader, the plan is aligned with the attainment of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Thriving Communities focuses on creating better health, well-being, education, and employment outcomes for host communities, with significant investments by the company and the Anglo American Foundation on long-term system-level change within priority focus areas, including healthy living.  Mpumi Zikalala, CEO of Anglo American’s Kumba Iron Ore business and Chairperson of the South African National Aids Council’s Private Sector Forum, said: “Building a more equitable healthcare system globally is in our DNA as a company – it is how we do business. Through our long history of supporting major public health programmes to help improve the health of our employees and host communities and running major health facilities around our operations over many decades, we recognise that good health and well-being are essential to building thriving communities and economies.  “Our contribution to the Global Fund enables us to meaningfully contribute to shaping the agenda associated with relevant national health programmes while supporting the successful delivery of our Sustainable Mining Plan health interventions.”  Anglo American has a longstanding partnership with the Global Fund, both as a member of the Fund’s Board and a significant contributor to the Fund’s activities.  Peter Sands, Executive Director of the Global Fund, said: “We are tremendously grateful to Anglo American, together with the Anglo American Foundation, for once again committing funds to support our lifesaving work. Through its industry-leading commitment to health and well-being, Anglo American is showing how powerful partnerships can be to fight for what counts – to defeat HIV, TB and malaria and end health inequity”. The digital solutions that the company will support through the Digital Health Accelerator can transform progress in the fight against diseases and prepare countries for future threats.” Anglo American and the Anglo American Foundation’s combined $15 million contribution will fall under the Global Fund’s Digital Health Impact Accelerator Catalytic Fund – which will promote investment in community health systems to improve the quality of community health worker programmes through digitisation, for example through the improvement of the interoperability of health data systems. Partners for this initiative include Zenysis and Novartis Foundation.  “As an anchor partner of this initiative, we will help facilitate the strengthening of community health systems and their resilience to respond to future pandemics and health-related shocks. The accelerator is aligned with our focus as a company, and that of the Anglo American Foundation and its focus on building strategic partnerships to achieve impact. Achieving good health and well-being requires us to strengthen the quality of community health systems collectively, while also promoting the resilience of health systems in our host communities and the countries where we operate,” said Dr Alexandra Plowright, Lead for Community Health and Wellbeing at Anglo American. Further information about Anglo American’s longstanding support for health programmes:  In 1986, Anglo American launched two HIV-related initiatives: an education and awareness programme aimed at the entire workforce; and the provision of more than $5 million in funding to prominent researchers in Europe and the US to investigate treatment possibilities using decoy CD4 proteins inserted into red blood cells.  With more than 120,000 employees throughout the 1990s in South Africa, HIV/AIDS was a reality for the company, for its people and their families.  By 1990, Anglo American was one of the first companies to develop a human-rights-based HIV/AIDS policy. Because little was known about the disease, many employers required a ‘negative’ screening as a prerequisite to guarantee employment. During a time of uncertainty and closed-mindedness, this policy ensured no discrimination against any person living with HIV. In 2002, Anglo American was the first major employer to begin offering free anti-retroviral treatment to all its employees, and, in December 2008, Anglo American extended this benefit to employees’ direct dependants.  This decision was based largely on the understanding that HIV/AIDS cannot be effectively managed when only one family member receives care for a disease that affects the whole family. Anglo American’s world-leading HIV/AIDS response, providing the largest free HIV and AIDS workplace and voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) programme, has been consistently held up as best practice by the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Workplace HIV/AIDS programmes are in place at all Anglo American’s operations, with activity particularly focused in southern Africa where HIV prevalence was historically high.  In 2016, Anglo American adopted the test-and-treat approach and aligned its HIV/AIDS targets to UNAIDS 90/90/90 strategy, which means that: 90% of our people living with HIV know their HIV status; 90% of those diagnosed with HIV are receiving sustained anti-retroviral therapy; and 90% of those receiving anti-retroviral therapy have viral suppression, meaning the viral load is so low as to be undetectable.  In 2018, Anglo American launched its industry-leading Sustainable Mining Plan following extensive internal and external stakeholder engagement. Under the Thriving Communities pillar, Anglo American is committed to prioritising the health and well-being of its communities by investing in strengthening health systems in host communities, as well as activities aimed at supporting healthcare in operating countries. In Brazil, Anglo American has partnered with NGO, Reprolatina, to provide health services to more than 63,000 people over the last eight years, making a real difference to lives within the region. In Chile, we’re working with INTA, the national institution for nutrition, on a pilot project to help reduce childhood obesity. Since the Covid-19 pandemic began in early 2020, Anglo American worked on multiple fronts to protect its workforce and host communities as part of its WeCare lives and livelihoods programme. Efforts included continuing to maintain robust workplace controls, the roll-out of a comprehensive health management programme, making available up to $30 million to support the global roll-out of Covid-19 vaccines, and ensuring that employees, contractors and their families have access to those vaccines.

Beyond The Metaverse: A Product Design Perspective From The Real World Fast Company
Beyond The Metaverse: A Product Design Perspective From The Real World Fast Company
Beyond The Metaverse: A Product Design Perspective From The Real World – Fast Company https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/beyond-the-metaverse-a-product-design-perspective-from-the-real-world-fast-company/ The Fast Company Executive Board is a private, fee-based network of influential leaders, experts, executives, and entrepreneurs who share their insights with our audience. The world of product design, like almost every other industry, has a finger on the pulse of the next big thing to happen to us since the internet. The metaverse is undoubtedly the buzzword of the day, with some industries counting on the next-generation internet platform to transform the digital world as we know it. The metaverse is expected to impact every aspect of our lives, from how we interact with our friends to the assets we own, the products we buy, and how we experience the world around us. While many metaverse enthusiasts are highlighting how several industries will essentially move to this online commercial utopia, adapt to a meta future, or simply risk obscurity, this might just be a little more hype than warranted. For instance, while there is no doubt the metaverse opens extensive opportunities for design and product development, I believe the future of product design is very much rooted in the real world—the world of physical objects that we already know and inhabit. While the metaverse is made up of virtual 3D space, the real world is where we will continue to encounter physical objects. There is likely to be some overlap between the two; for example, guided cars, hybrid objects that allow you to make changes dynamically to spaces, or hardware that is integrated into virtual spaces. I believe designing products for the physical world is uniquely fraught with potential and innumerable possibilities for the future. DESIGN FOR THE PHYSICAL WORLD In my experience, product design for our physical world is a complex endeavor that is far less understood than software development. It takes extremely specialized and skilled teams of people from various disciplines to create and constantly improve the objects and even the various components that make up the products we use every day. Unlike in the virtual world where a product with glitches can be constantly updated and released with fixes, there is very little tolerance for error in the physical world, so getting it right the first time is critical. Product design involves unique challenges, from understanding every aspect of mechanics to managing data privacy concerns, and from planning around the availability of components to the need to constantly test for the real world. To bring a product idea to life, companies often need to partner with a design firm that has the relevant deep experience and brings together a team with the required competencies that fill their own knowledge and skill gaps in creating a product and taking it to market. Ideally, the design process focuses on a unique user and aims to provide a solution or improve on something making it more efficient, appealing, and useful. Design partners need to explore the space of buyers and users, research every aspect from the competition to technology that needs to be used, and take ownership over several stages from identifying the right manufacturer, sourcing components, distribution, pricing, and taking the product to market. Expertise in creating and selling successful products of their own is invaluable in a design partner. Design firms should ideally work interactively with the business team as a single point of contact for the company, be a knowledge partner as well as empower decision-making, select low-risk high-value design decisions with the client, and manage and mitigate the risk that comes with new-product-development territory. Marketing experience embedded in the design team adds value to the process of connecting a great product with its ideal customer. Today, it is possible and necessary for a company with a new product idea or even a specific problem they would like to solve to find a design partner that can empower and support them in realizing their vision with transparency, integrity, and all-encompassing expertise. DESIGN FOR THE FUTURE Companies are always looking for product ideas that are likely to be commercially viable and find the right product-market fit. Naturally, there are some arenas where innovation is in great demand. When it comes to the areas where I believe we are likely to see the most innovation and “killer app” product development in the future, health could be a major driver with new and exciting wearables, connecting wellness, sports, and motivation. Bio-data collection and presentation to the user for immediate feedback is at the heart of the value. There is even a wearable that helps golfers improve their game! It’s intriguing to imagine what’s next. I believe physical products that improve and enhance social connection and tech that fosters informative live interaction are likely to really take off in the next few years. Education is another area where I anticipate significant opportunity for growth and the introduction of game-changing new products. Sustainability and energy use awareness in product design and development has also moved from a nice-to-have trend to a core value that I see companies designing their products around and marketers using to brand and take their products to market. The metaverse too, while far from being the all-encompassing future in my opinion, brings in personal and collected data to a wide platform of applications and opens exciting opportunities for real-world devices that improve virtual experiences and interactions. However, from fitness trackers that use and measure airflow quality to assess performance, to devices that clean and sterilize cellphones, to smart devices improving sexual health and well-being, the physical world is experiencing innovation like never before. In fact, as the real world and virtual world integrate more seamlessly, our world as we know it and constant improvement through the design of everyday things we encounter inform even our ideas of what the metaverse could look like tomorrow. Kevin Bailey is the founder and president of Design 1st, and has 35 years designing and delivering hardware products for clients.

The Best Laptop Stands Of 2022 How-To Geek
The Best Laptop Stands Of 2022 How-To Geek
The Best Laptop Stands Of 2022 – How-To Geek https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/the-best-laptop-stands-of-2022-how-to-geek/ Daniel Krason/Shutterstock.com What to Look For in a Laptop Stand in 2022 When buying a stand, you want to ensure it can sustain the size of your laptop without failing. If you use a smaller device, you shouldn’t have trouble getting a good option. However, things start to get dicey if you have a large 17-inch laptop. Make sure you know how big and heavy your laptop is, and you can start your search from there. Aside from size and weight, adjustability is another important aspect of choosing a laptop stand. This simple but important feature will ensure you can set your device at the perfect level regardless of torso or table height. Some stands can even reach considerable heights, making them perfect as a standing desk replacement. Alongside adjustability is portability, as this will determine if you can easily move the stand between your home and workplace or take it on a journey. If you’re planning on keeping the stand in one place, this isn’t a concern, but if you need a stand use your laptop wherever you go this is one of the most important factors to make. While not the most important, you should look into the material and finish of a stand before making a purchase. Most options are made of metals like aluminum, but wooden and plastic builds also exist. Metal will be more durable but heavier, for the most part, so make sure the material is ideal for your use case. Once your criteria are sorted, it’s time to start looking at the stands that could be propping up your laptops or PCs. Best Laptop Stand Overall: Rain Design iLevel 2 Rain Design Pros ✓ Sturdy, stylish design ✓ Effortless adjustability ✓ Can hold most laptops Cons ✗ Small range of height adjustability ✗ Not portable Kicking off the list is the Rain Design iLevel 2. Its simple and sturdy anodized aluminum build allows it to hold up a range of laptop body types measuring up to 15-inches easily. Even with a heavier laptops, you can rest assured that it will remain in place and not wobble, thanks to the rubber stoppers across the four corners and an innovative front hinge design that isn’t susceptible to toppling backward. The Rain Design iLevel 2 is not the most adjustable laptop stand. But its resting height is roughly 6.5 inches above the desk surface, and it features a tilting mechanism that props up the rear end of your device another 2.5 inches so you can get that extra height when needed. While the range is nothing exceptional, the adjustment itself is one of the easiest on a laptop stand. It only requires sliding a knob from left to right, making it one of the device’s strongest selling points. You don’t have to worry about ruining the look of your existing setup, as the ergonomic design and silver finish make the laptop stand to look nice sitting on a desk. And if you don’t have any form of cable management, the space behind the stand could serve as a nifty makeshift hiding spot for unsightly wires. The one downside of this stand is that it’s not portable. The mostly fixed design means that it cannot be folded into a simpler structure to be carried between your home and office setups. Best Laptop Stand Overall Rain Design iLevel 2 Rain Design has an exceptionally sturdy and stylish laptop stand that can sustain most laptops. Plus, you would hardly find an alternative that’s easier to adjust. Best Budget Laptop Stand: Nulaxy Laptop Stand Pros ✓ Very cheap ✓ Sturdy, stylish design ✓ Suitable for most laptops Cons ✗ Not adjustable ✗ Not portable If you want a simple stand to raise your laptop, but don’t want to spend too much, the Nulaxy Laptop Stand is the one for you. It’s an ultracheap option that lifts the rear of your laptop by 7 inches, allowing you to reach or get close to an eye-level setup. Despite costing less than everything else on this list, it can easily hold between 10 and 16-inch laptops. And if you want a color-matching workspace, you’ll like that it comes in many tones, including blue, red, and purple. One downside of the Nulaxy Laptop Stand is its lack of adjustability. This is a fixed stand with a fixed height. This also means that you won’t be able to collapse the stand into a more portable form. However, at this price point, these are understandable compromises to make. Best Budget Laptop Stand Nulaxy Laptop Stand Need to save a few dollars? This basic laptop stand supports most laptop sizes. Plus, it’s stylish and comes in many colors. Best Laptop Stand for Desks: Ergotron WorkFit-T Standing Desk Converter Pros ✓ Exceptionally sturdy ✓ 20-inch height reach ✓ Super easy adjustability ✓ Two-tier design Cons ✗ Pricey ✗ Cumbersome All the other stands on this list have a specialty, causing them to compromise on other aspects at times. But if you want an absolute all-around laptop stand for your desk, you should consider the Ergotron WorkFit-T Standing Desk Converter. Its mini desk-like design gives it the same level of sturdiness as your normal desk. Add to that the oversized footprint, and you have a tool that can handle even your most hefty office or home setup (up to 40 pounds). As the name suggests, the Ergotron Laptop Stand is the ideal alternative to a standing desk because it can lift your laptop up to 20 inches. The stand also has enough space for a full-size keyboard and mouse underneath, thanks to a two-tier design. It’s also easy to elevate and can be operated by one person, thanks to its spring-loaded mechanism. When collapsed, it’s still at least 5 inches high, and it doesn’t compromise that much-needed keyboard space, so it’s far from portable. The major downside of this stand is its cost. At almost $500, it’s at least six times more expensive than anything else on this list. If that’s too much, you can get the lower-priced Ergotron WorkFit-Z Mini Standing Desk Converter, which is slightly smaller, holds less weight, and doesn’t rise as tall—but has a smaller price tag for those compromises. Best Laptop Stand for Desks Ergotron WorkFit-T Standing Desk Converter If you’re not looking to move your stand, the WorkFit-T is super sturdy and adjusts easily. Plus, it can extend up to 20 inches making it an ideal standing desk alternative. Best Portable Laptop Stand: Nexstand Laptop Stand Pros ✓ Portable when folded ✓ Lightweight ✓ Sturdy enough for most laptops If you need a laptop you can effortlessly move between the home and the office, the Nexstand Laptop Stand is the best option. It can hold laptops weighing up to 20 pounds at anywhere from 5.5 inches to 12.6 inches high. The front part of the stand has a pinch mechanism that only allows it to fit laptops with front edges measuring less than 0.75 inches; however, that should be sufficient for most modern laptops. The stand can be adjusted between eight different height settings. However, the process can be tricky as you need to tug on the two latches on its legs simultaneously to lower or raise the stand. It might seem annoying, but it’s easy once you get the hang of it. Where the Nexstand excels is in its compactness and portability. When folded, it takes the shape of a stick measuring 14 by 1.5 by 1.5 inches and weighing only 8 ounces—an easy fit for most backpacks and laptop bags. One downside of the laptop stand is that it’s made of plastic, which makes it feel cheap compared to the other picks on this list. However, this is more an issue of form over function, as the Nexstand is sturdy despite the four-legged base. Best Portable Laptop Stand Nexstand Laptop Stand Nexstand offers a portable, lightweight laptop stand that can fit in almost any backpack while still supporting most laptops. Best Adjustable Laptop Stand: Lifelong Upryze Ergonomic Stand Pros ✓ Great for sitting and standing ✓ Very sturdy even at max height ✓ Can hold 17-inch laptops easily Cons ✗ Hard to adjust ✗ May topple at max height The Lifelong Upryze Ergonomic Stand is our adjustability pick, thanks to its suitability for both sitting and standing positions. It takes the form of two metal plates, one on the base and the other up top for the laptop, separated by an extendable arm to give a Z-shaped design. The arm can reach 13 inches at maximum length, just above the Nexstand’s 12.6 inches. However, the stand can extend a further 7 inches to reach 20 inches in total by tilting the upper plate. Overall, the Upryze Ergonomic Stand can accommodate a wider range of heights. It can even be cheaper than an adjustable desk if you like to switch between standing and sitting while working. Of course, you can’t hit a mouse or keyboard on this stand, but it’ll work. While a 20-inch tall stand would typically struggle to hold a heavy laptop, the same can’t be said of the Upryze stand. It’s one of the sturdiest options on this list, capable of easily holding up bulky 17-inch laptops—most other stands would sink under the weight. One downside is that the small base doesn’t seem to provide enough leverage at maximum height, putting the stand at risk of toppling backward if accidentally bumped into—typing on the laptop keyboard at that height is also not a good idea. Another pain point is the stiff hinges that require a fair bit of effort to adjust. This makes sense as it helps prevent the stand from sinking, but it still makes it difficult to adjust. Best Adjustable Laptop Stand Best Laptop Cooling Pad: Havit HV-F2056 Cooling Pad Pros ✓ Affordable ✓ Two USB ports ✓ Triple fan configuration Cons ✗ No controls for fan speed ✗ No rubber stoppers for laptop Whether gaming, running graphic intensive software, or opening hundreds of Chrome tabs simultaneously, your laptop will likely warm up a little under heavy strain. So, it would help if you had a cooling pad to cool things down, and we recommend the Havit HV-F2056 Cooling Pad. It features three fans capable of reaching around 1,100 RPMs to draw...

Private Companies Don’t Want To Be Struck Out Of Crypto Accounting Rules Being Developed – Thomson Reuters Tax & Accounting https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/private-companies-dont-want-to-be-struck-out-of-crypto-accounting-rules-being-developed-thomson-reuters-tax-accounting/ Private Company Council (PCC) Chair Candace Wright on Sept. 22, 2022, said new accounting rules the FASB is developing for cryptocurrencies should be applicable to both public and private companies “since there is no guidance.” Wright, a director with Postlethwaite & Netterville, a Louisiana-based accounting and business advisory firm, told board members she supported “including the private companies as you move forward with this [project].” Her remarks piggybacked on questions raised by other PCC members about how broad a reach the crypto rules would have. In early September, the FASB decided to limit rules it plans to develop to cryptocurrencies that are fungible, deemed intangible, reside on a blockchain or distributed ledger, secured through cryptography, and do not meet the definition of a contract. “It is a pretty narrow scope so there will be a number of crypto assets that could be outside of the scope but that’s because those crypto assets may very well be financial assets,” a FASB staff member explained. “There are a number of crypto assets that we are observing that give you rights to goods or services from a counterparty,” he said. “So it’s hard to really understand exactly what the percentage is or populations are, but we’re seeing the evolution of having these crytpo assets be more akin to traditional assets that already have current accounting. What we’ve described here we think is the stuff that falls out of what is traditionally accounted for.” The PCC is an 11-member panel that works with the FASB to develop accounting rules and/or amendments in GAAP for private companies, the largest business demographic in the U.S. The panel can make recommendations that private companies be excluded from certain rules, or request that complex guidance be simplified. Further, the PCC can recommend whether private companies should get an additional year or longer to adopt new accounting standards. In general the FASB, which is still in the early-stages of the project, expects that the guidance would cover most of the value that is trading by market cap, the discussions indicated. “If you go to some website that tracks crypto market cap, I would say that certainly by size this would cover the vast majority of value that’s trading,” FASB Vice Chair James Kroeker said. “In terms of number of potential things that might be encoded with cryptography and called crypto items – harder to say, but for those, for example, NFTs or other things there’s probably already guidance if you have underlying rights to other assets,” he said. The guidance would exclude certain so called stablecoins, Kroeker added. “Now if it’s really a stablecoin and continues to trade consistently at a dollar, for example, then we don’t need a lot of guidance if it really is stable, so if it becomes unstable certainly still some impairment guidance,” he said. “But again by prevalence of economic phenomena it seems to get most of them.” Among questions the board was asked included whether there were plans to include other digital assets such as NFTs into a future project. “Just wondering based on how the scope was set for things that were sort of identifiable digital assets that are outside of the scope if there’s been any sort of discussion around when those would potentially come onto the plate for a potential research project,” Douglas Uhl, principal team leader, corporate accounting policy at Chick-fil-A, Inc., asked. Discussions to date have not shown a pervasive need, staff said. “By definition they’re nonfungible,” FASB Chair Richard Jones explained. “So whether it’s on a blockchain or not, how do you feel about fair valuing baseball cards, and comic books, and art work and moving on to digital copies – do you want the Wu-Tang Clan fair valued,” he said. “I think it gets into broader issue because the common factor there is a unique piece of intellectual property very often.” Jones said the board also has a project on its research agenda to explore fair valuing commodities and thus there may be some overlap. Many societies, even in the advanced countries, are still not “globalised” as they are not willing to accept coexistence, especially with foreigners, Han said in an exclusive interview with WAM on the sidelines of Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity, recently held in South Korea. From coexistence to increased nationalism There are countries that have decided on coexistence as a prerequisite of their national identity, which helps full-scale globalisation and the accepting of each other, Han pointed out. Some Arab-Muslim societies that coexist with their Christian population and Sunni, Shia sects are an example. However, such good examples have been shaken now [due to extremist ideologies propagating intolerance], the official noted. “That was the case [good examples of coexistence] in the past. But these days we may be becoming more nationalistic. We should go back to the past or back to the future [to revive good examples],” he suggested. The chairman of the peace institute said Jeju Forum was part of the institute’s efforts for global peace, which may yield results in the future. The annual event was launched in 2001 as a platform for dialogue to share visions for peace in the Korean Peninsula, East Asia, and the world, and seek creative solutions through international cooperation. Sanctions do not help peace The organisers invited a select group of journalists from prominent foreign media outlets, including Emirates News Agency (WAM), to cover the Forum. Speaking to the invited foreign journalists in a luncheon, Han said the experience of Korean peninsula has proved that economic sanctions and military force were not helpful in achieving peace. “Military force and sanctions have been the main tools to maintain peace and stability in this region. But I don’t think these military forces and sanctions are the best desirable means to achieve peace. They are very dangerous, too. They are costly and eventually not that useful,” he pointed out. The chairman further explained, “I mean, we had all the military power, and we applied all those things, including economic sanctions, on North Korea but they didn’t change, and it is now a nuclear power.” Therefore, he suggested that in addition to conventional ways of maintaining peace and stability, “we need to try or develop alternative ways. When traditional ways to keep peace fail, then, maybe, we can rely on dialogue and cooperation.” Past example of Europe, Southeast Asia He pointed out that such means were successful in Europe and Southeast Asia. “Not right now, but before, European and in Southeast Asian countries were able to work towards peace through dialogue and cooperation.” He cited the end of cold war between the U.S. and former Soviet Union and unification of two Germanys as examples. “That did not happen through military means or sanctions. Those changes took place through dialogue and consultation and cooperation,” he emphasised while talking about the importance of Jeju Forum. Hosted by Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, International Peace Foundation, and the East Asia Foundation, and sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea and the Jeju Free International City Development Centre, Jeju Forum has served as an international public forum for the past two decades.
