One of the region’s largest-ever economic development projects is awaiting the transfer of 1,644 acres from one Riverhead agency to another.
On Wednesday, the Riverhead Industrial Development Agency accepted an application from Calverton Aviation & Technology to transfer the property in the Enterprise Park at Calverton from Riverhead’s Community Development Agency to its IDA, which would clear the way for CAT to finally close on its $40 million acquisition of the EPCAL land.
Once the land sale closes, CAT, which is headed by Triple Five Worldwide Group, is poised to begin its planned sprawling corporate campus on about 600 acres of the property, which will include tenants involved in industrial aviation, aerospace, transportation, technology and logistics, among others, according to documents presented to the IDA.
While the property is zoned to accommodate 9.8 million square feet of development, the purchase agreement with the town calls for CAT to build a minimum of 1 million square feet of development at EPCAL within the first five years. For that first phase of the project, the developer will invest more than $200 million, employ 235 construction personnel and create an additional 117 jobs, according to CAT’s attorney Peter Curry of Farrell Fritz, who added that the project will require IDA incentives to assist in the development.
According to an economic study presented to the IDA, tenants in the first phase of the development are projected to produce a $95 million payroll, with an average salary of $89,500. The overall economic impact of the first phase is estimated to add $167 million to the local economy.
“This milestone action by the IDA sets the stage for the next phase of EPCAL’s economic development, one that will create the Silicon Valley of the east,” Justin Ghermezian, a principal of CAT, said in a company statement. “To meet that responsibility, we bring decades of development experience to the challenge, committing considerable resources to ensure that this park will be an enormous economic success for the Town of Riverhead, our company, and, most importantly, the residents of the town.”
The developer is setting aside about 1,000 acres of “environmentally sensitive land” in its acquisition to conserve it. In addition, CAT will be allocating funds to provide new lighting on EPCAL ball fields as well as repair portions of the property’s 10,000-foot runway to ensure aviation activities can continue as required by future tenants.
It’s been more than two decades since the town took title to the 2,900-acre Calverton property, last used by the U.S. Navy and Northrop Grumman for testing F14s and other military aircraft. Besides the portion to be preserved as open space to protect the region’s environmental health, the balance of the property was always earmarked for economic development, which despite fielding several ill-fated proposals over the years, Riverhead is now in a position to deliver.

Las Vegas, NV, Sept. 22, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — via NewMediaWire — Hemp Inc. (OTC PINK: HEMP), would like to share the Digital Journal’s recent article from Data Bridge Market Research, which claims that the global hemp fiber market is rising at an annual rate of approximately 6.9% in the forecasted period of 2021 to 2028. Data Bridge Market Research is a multinational management consulting firm, with offices in India and Canada. The Company provides a variety of services such as market verified industry reports, technology trend analysis, formative market research, strategic consulting, vendor analysis, production and demand analysis and consumer impact studies.
Data Bridge Market Research notes that the rise in the awareness regarding the benefits of hemp is escalating the growth of the hemp fiber market. Hemp is utilized in the processing and manufacturing of various products such as paper, textile, insulation and construction material, personal care products, nutraceutical, bio-plastics and bio-fuel. Hemp is also used in food and beverage products, as it is primarily grown organically, with no use of toxic chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers or herbicides.
The demand for natural organic products over pharmaceuticals among customers across the globe acts as one of the major factors driving the growth of the hemp fiber market. The increase in demand for hemp fibers in various industries such as automotive, construction, food and beverage, personal care and textile, especially in emerging regions and the rise in the investment for the production of hemp-based products, is accelerating the growth in the hemp fiber market. Global awareness, as it relates to the therapeutic properties of the product and the low prices of hemp, is encouraging farmers to diversify their crop options, which ultimately influences the hemp fiber market. Additionally, the increase in use for numerous food applications, the rise in the legalization in the cultivation of hemp, emerging consumer trends, the surge in the number of social media influencers, is promoting the benefits of the product, the prevalence of chronic diseases and mergers and acquisitions among key players, is positively affecting the hemp fiber market. Furthermore, research and development activities and product development is extending the profitable opportunities to the hemp fiber market players in the forecasted period from 2021 through 2028.
It is definitely an exciting time to be in the hemp market.

Sportsbooks Push For Universal Start Date For Mass Sports Betting Gaming Today
Sportsbooks Push For Universal Start Date For Mass Sports Betting – Gaming Today https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/sportsbooks-push-for-universal-start-date-for-mass-sports-betting-gaming-today/
Top sportsbooks and casinos vying for spots in the Massachusetts sports betting market seem to want two things: a universal launch date for all operators, and a limit on the number of temporary licenses ultimately issued to mobile sportsbooks.
At a roundtable meeting today in Boston, FanDuel, BetMGM, Bally’s, and Fanatics were among several potential Massachusetts operators that advised the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) against issuing more temporary mobile sports betting licenses than the full market can hold.
No more than seven permanent mobile licenses can be issued by law to operators that aren’t tied to a casino or simulcast facility. Several operators told the MGC those so-called “untethered” temporary licenses should be no more, or no less, than the number of available permanent licenses. At issue is the lack of a cap on untethered temporary mobile licenses in Massachusetts’ 2022 sports betting law.
The total number of permanent licenses under the law, for both retail and mobile, is limited to 20 – five retail licenses at casinos and simulcast facilities, eight mobile apps tied to those facilities, plus the seven untethered apps.
Comments from operators before the MGC today showcased their desire to put all new Massachusetts sportsbooks on equal footing when it comes to temporary licensing and giving operators at least a chance to launch at the same time.
FanDuel
Temporary licensing: FanDuel VP for Product and New Market Compliance Cory Fox today advised the MGC against issuing more temporary licenses than available permanent licenses under the 2022 law.
“A successful launch of sports wagering requires a significant investment of time and resources by the operator to make sure they are creating a customized process for the specific state where they are launching,” Fox said today. “We don’t think it’s an effective use of resources by the operator or by the commission to offer more temporary licenses than they can be final licenses, given the significant investment.”
Launch date: “At a minimum, all mobile operators, regardless of category (tethered or untethered), should have a universal start date,” said Fox. A universal start date creates fair competition, he said. In states without a universal start date, “operators who have launched first have enjoyed a significant sustained advantage in market share vs. operators who have launched just a few days or weeks later.”
BetMGM
BetMGM Sr. Mgr of Licensing Jose Wyseman represents BetMGM and MGM Springfield – one of three licensed casinos in the commonwealth eligible for retail and tethered mobile sports betting licenses under Massachusetts law.
Temporary licensing: For untethered sportsbooks, Wyseman said it is BetMGM’s position that temporary licenses should not exceed the number of untethered permanent licenses available. “The concept of issuing more temporary licenses than permanent and then having operators dismantle their operations is problematic for several reasons and would be unprecedented, and we caution against that.”
Launch date: BetMGM advised MGC to set and announce a universal launch date. “This is an approach that has been adopted in several other jurisdictions with success,” said Wyseman. ” … It affords the best experience for customers who, on the first day, are welcome to a full suite of operators and products, and lets the market speak for itself.” Arizona and Colorado are two states that implemented sports betting by universal launch. Ohio has set a universal launch date for Jan. 1, 2023.
DraftKings
Temporary licensing: DraftKings Sr. Director of Legal Affairs Chris Cipolla said DraftKings supports temporary licensing of untethered sportsbooks. Unlike FanDuel and BetMGM, the Boston-based company did not comment on whether those licenses should be limited or not, instead leaving that decision up to the MGC.
“One of the benefits to being in 2022 … the commonwealth and you as the commission do have the benefit of four-plus years post (PASPA) to look to other jurisdictions where operators are safely operating their products to help determine who should be entitled to a temporary license,” said Cipolla. “We do feel the temporary licensing process is important to maintaining that parity across all categories.”
Launch date: DraftKings believes all operators should have “the opportunity to launch on day 1,” both retail and mobile, said Cipolla. “By setting a date that operators can work towards … setting that expectation and allowing them to work towards that, we have found that’s the most efficient way to launch a market.”
Fanatics
Temporary licensing: Fanatics VP of Regulatory Affairs Alex Smith sided with FanDuel and BetMGM when it comes to temporary licensing. “I would caution that allowing more operators to launch than the market can bear on a full license basis does introduce consumer protection concerns that, I think, are difficult to address,” said Smith.
Launch date: Fanatics supports a universal launch. “It certainly adds to the market and makes the process smoother both for you as a regulator and all of us here as operators,” Smith told the MGC.
Bally’s Interactive
Temporary licensing: Bally’s Interactive legal counsel Justin Smith said the company does not recommend temporary licensing in Massachusetts. Licensing on a temporary basis without a cap that matches available permanent licenses under the law would hurt consumers and the operator, said Smith.
“Customers have already placed wagers on future games, which are usually placed months in advance,” he said, with product development also an issue. “Bally’s recommends completing the due diligence of each applicant’s ability to launch operations to the citizens of Massachusetts with the comfort that all operators and vendors have completed the state investigations and… are authorized and certified.”
Launch date: Bally’s Interactive does recommend setting a universal launch date to allow operators to prepare ahead and launch when ready. “That will place the onus on the operators to meet that date,” Smith told the commission.
Caesars Sportsbook
Noncommittal on the issue of both temporary licensing and a universal start date today was Caesars Sportsbook. The sportsbooks’ legal representative Mark Hichar of the law firm Greenberg Traurig made a brief comment stating Caesars’ position in vague terms:
“We seek only that the process regarding the launch timeline be clear and transparent,” said Hichar. “We appreciate the views of others who are seeking untethered category 3 licenses, and we look forward to hearing their opinions. But none from us at this time.”

Get Ready To Shell Out For The ‘iPhone Killer’ – InvestorPlace https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/get-ready-to-shell-out-for-the-iphone-killer-investorplace/

[Editor’s note: “Get Ready to Shell Out for the ‘iPhone Killer’” was previously published in August 2022. It has since been updated to include the most relevant information available.]
I love my iPhone. I can do everything on it. Send messages. Call folks. Read the news. Trade stocks. Watch videos. Play games.
My iPhone is great. But, as much as I love it, I’m also tired of it.
I mean, Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone to the world back in 2007. That was 14 years ago. That may as well be a century in the technology world. New tech products seemingly replace old ones in the blink of an eye.
Sure, the iPhone has improved dramatically since the first edition’s launch in ’07. But if we’re being honest, not much has changed on the iPhone since Apple got rid of the home button with the iPhone X.
Yes, the cameras have improved, I guess. And there’s more colors. Cooler displays, too, right?
Now, I don’t know about you, but those upgrades didn’t make much of a difference to me. In my opinion, the iPhone hasn’t really changed since 2017.
It’s time for something new. It’s time for the next evolution of consumer tech hardware – the device that replaces smartphones. Indeed, it’s time for the iPhone killer.
Fortunately, the iPhone killer is right around the corner.
I’m talking about Apple’s (AAPL) incoming virtual reality headset. It promises to make AAPL one of the best metaverse stocks to buy.
Every tech company in the world is going “all in” with virtual reality technology. They’re racing to build what many feel is the next generation of the internet – the metaverse.
What Is the Metaverse?
The metaverse is basically a 3D version of the internet. It is the internet. It has games, videos, news, shopping, advertising — all of it. But we won’t be interacting with all that content by swiping on a digital screen the way we do now. Instead, we’ll put on a virtual reality headset and immerse ourselves in that content.
In other words, you won’t be observing the internet through a screen. You’ll be in the internet. That, in short, is the metaverse.
Meta (META) is so confident about that future that it’s changed its name – short, of course, for metaverse. Microsoft (MSFT) is building metaverse offices, centered largely around its Teams platform. Nvidia’s (NVDA) CEO has said the metaverse will be “much, much bigger than the physical world.”
The Big Tech world has spoken. The metaverse is the future.
But to access the metaverse, you need a virtual reality headset. And to date, Big Tech companies have created rather unimpressive VR headsets.
Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) released a tone-deaf product with Google Glass, which were low-quality, expensive, and invasive enough to dub anyone who wore them “Glassholes.” Sure, Snap‘s (SNAP) Spectacles and Meta’s Oculus Quest 2 are decent, but they haven’t taken the world by storm. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 is technically very impressive. But it weighs a hefty 1.25 pounds, starts at $3,500, and is intended exclusively for enterprise use.
Let’s be clear. Big Tech companies have tried to make VR headsets. And for the most part, they’ve failed. And metaverse stocks have stayed flat.
Big Tech’s Big Fails
Then again… why should those companies succeed in making mainstream VR headsets? Save Microsoft, they’ve never made a hardware product. Meta is a software company. Same with Snap and Google. And while Microsoft makes some hardware, it’s recently pivoted to have a cloud-computing focus.
So, the market’s failure to create high-quality VR headsets with mainstream appeal is a result of the nature of the companies that have tried to make those headsets. We’re seeing software companies trying to make hardware. No wonder they’re failing! That’s like asking a point guard in basketball to become a rebounding machine, or a pocket quarterback to rush 100 yards.
It won’t happen!
But soon, that all changes…
It’s rumored that next year, the world’s most successful tech hardware maker of all time is releasing a VR headset.
Of course, I’m talking about Apple — the maker of the iPhone in your hand, the Apple Watch on your wrist, the Mac on your desk. Indeed, it’s the maker of every major successful tech hardware product of the last 20 years.
That company is making a VR headset. Today, it’s mostly software companies who are trying to make VR headsets. Soon, the best hardware company in the world is going to make one.
The Best Metaverse Stocks to Buy in 2022
Make no mistake. Apple’s VR headset will be a game-changer for the metaverse.
It will be very high-quality. It will look very cool, be very light and portable. It’ll be affordable. Indeed, it’ll be everything it needs to be to achieve mainstream approval.
I cannot overstate the importance of this launch enough. It’s like the launch of the iPhone back in 2007. This is the biggest tech hardware launch of the past decade!
Once everyone has an Apple VR headset instead of an iPhone, they’ll be hanging out in the metaverse instead of scrolling on their smartphones. The multi-trillion-dollar Metaverse Revolution that everyone has been raving about will finally begin…
To play it, you could buy Apple stock. But that’s boring. And quite frankly, it lacks upside potential. Apple is already a $2.4 trillion company. Even if the company entirely dominates the metaverse market, maybe the stock doubles? Maybe? And that’s not even considering that its VR headset business will cannibalize its iPhone business…
So, to play the emergence of the Metaverse Revolution in 2022, I say pass on Apple stock. Instead, buy smaller VR/AR stocks that are set to win big as the metaverse goes mainstream.
Specifically, there’s one $5 stock on my radar that I think could be the Metaverse Revolution’s biggest winner. While Apple stock could double, this tiny stock could soar 20X.
Two-fold or 20X? Which one sounds better to you? I like the sound of 20X gains more, don’t you?

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KLIX)-Irrigators with the Twin Falls Canal Company will see water shut off mid-October. General Manager Jay Barlogi announced the headgates at Milner Dam will be closed on October 14. It’ll take several days before water stops flowing through the canal system. The Canal Company asks irrigators to inform their ditch riders if they are done using water so headgates can be closed to help conserve water in the reservoir. Barlogi wrote the reservoir system heading into the winter is low, “The Upper Snake River Reservoir System currently contains only 15% of its overall capacity. The two reservoir systems that the Twin Falls Canal Company hold storage rights in are American Falls Reservoir at 5% of total capacity and Jackson Lake Reservoir at 19% of total capacity.” He said at this point its hard to predict what the 2023 water year will be like, but given the current storage capacity they’ll need an above normal snowpack this winter. “We also know that we need to manage our water supply as efficiently as possible at the end of the current season to help with next year,” said Barlogi. Once the irrigation season is over winter maintenance will begin.

Crypto-focused finance company Delio has partnered with Blockdaemon to launch retail-focused staking services, giving customers a more seamless way to earn rewards on their digital asset holdings.
Delio’s staking services expand its existing crypto-bank offerings, which include lending, deposits and deposit accounts, the company announced Thursday. The new service offering is powered by blockchain infrastructure provider Blockdaemon, which provides a suite of institutional staking products.
While Delio didn’t specify which crypto assets will be included in the new staking services, Blockdaemon currently supports integration with over 60 blockchains. Delio representative James Jung also clarified that the firm also plans “to offer a variety of crypto asset financial services for users outside of Korea.”
Founded in 2017, Blockdaemon achieved unicorn status last year after securing $155 million in a Series B funding round. In the startup world, a unicorn is a company that achieves a valuation of $1 billion or more. At the time, Blockdaemon was valued at just over $1.25 billion.

BOSTON, Sept 22 (Reuters) – U.S. prosecutors on Thursday said they reached an agreement to drop criminal charges filed during the Trump administration against a Massachusetts judge accused of impeding a federal immigration arrest of a defendant in her courtroom.
Federal prosecutors said they had agreed to dismiss the obstruction charges filed against Newton District Court Judge Shelley Joseph in exchange for the judge referring herself to a state commission tasked with investigating judicial misconduct.
Prosecutors are also dropping obstruction charges against her former courtroom deputy, Wesley MacGregor, who entered into a deferred prosecution agreement to resolve a remaining perjury count.

The announcement marked the end of a high-profile case brought during former Republican President Donald Trump’s administration that Joseph’s lawyers and supporters long called politically motivated.
“This was a patently political indictment, blindly grounded in prosecutorial ambition,” Thomas Hoopes, Joseph’s lawyer, said.
The case was filed in 2019 during clashes between Trump’s administration and local governments that resisted his immigration crackdown and courthouse arrests by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
Prosecutors claimed Joseph and MacGregor in 2018 helped a previously-deported state court defendant evade being detained by an ICE agent by allowing him leave their Newton courthouse through a rear door.
Then-U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling, a Trump appointee, first brought the case. His successor, Rachael Rollins, an appointee of Democratic President Joe Biden, as Boston’s district attorney sued to block immigration arrests at courthouses after Joseph’s indictment.
Due to Rollins’ conflict, the case was reassigned to Rhode Island U.S. Attorney Zachary Cunha, leaving him to decide whether to move forward after a federal appeals court in February declined to toss the indictment.
“I have concluded that the interests of justice are best served by review of this matter before the body that oversees the conduct of Massachusetts state court judges, rather than in a continued federal criminal prosecution,” Cunha said.
Under Thursday’s agreement, Joseph made certain factual admissions that the Massachusetts Commission on Judicial Conduct can consider when deciding to recommend that the state’s top court discipline the judge.

An inspection from His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) found that the Force ‘requires improvement’ in responding to emergency 999 calls and other calls from the public. They have also been told to improve the accuracy of crime recording.
Figures published earlier this year found that between November 1, 2021 and April 30, 2022, Northumbria Police took on average 33.3 seconds to answer 999 calls. They were the only Force in the UK to take more than 30 seconds to pick up the phone, exceeding the target time for calls to be answered within 10 seconds.

No Ka Oi Health | News, Sports, Jobs – Maui News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/no-ka-oi-health-news-sports-jobs-maui-news/
September 2022 brings awareness to two important health topics related to our keiki — childhood obesity and childhood cancer.
Childhood obesity awareness
Awareness around childhood obesity is important because it’s one of the most serious, yet preventable, public health challenges of this century. Obese children are much more likely to become obese adults, which further puts them at increased risk for various medical issues throughout their life, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, cancer, joint problems and mental health conditions such as depression. Childhood obesity can also greatly affect their quality of life, including self-esteem and the ability to enjoy daily life.
Currently, more than 12.7 million children between 2 to 19 years old in the U.S. (nearly 20 percent) are obese. A further concern includes the fact that childhood obesity can lead to Type II diabetes in kids. The first case of Type II diabetes in a youth was in 1980. This was concerning because Type II diabetes previously only occurred in adults. Type II diabetes continues to dramatically increase in U.S. children with around 5,000 new cases diagnosed each year.
Childhood obesity can be preventable by managing weight with simple lifestyle changes. Together, you and your family can make simple changes that are effective at managing weight, including:
• Choosing healthy snacks, such as a piece of fruit, veggies or nuts.
• Drinking water instead of sugar drinks, which have zero nutrients and can lead to large weight gains.
• Cutting back on processed food, which is full of added salt, sugar and fat.
• Move your body every day (60 minutes for children) doing activities that you enjoy.
• Cut back on screen time. Read a book, play a game as a family or do something fun outdoors together.
Childhood cancers awareness
Awareness around childhood cancer is a very important topic because pediatric cancer is the leading cause of death for children under the age of 14 years old.
At the top of the list when it comes to the topic of childhood cancer is the personal heartache each family feels when they hear the words that their child has cancer. It’s important to find out all you can about the different types of cancer that affect children, so you can share this information with friends and families to help save children’s lives.
Here are five facts you need to know about childhood cancer:
• 43 children are diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. every day.
• Globally, about 400,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed each year.
• Almost 10 percent of children with cancer inherited a genetic mutation.
• Neuroblastoma is a rare type of cancer that almost always affects children.
• There is hope! There are approximately 483,000 childhood cancer survivors.
It’s important to know the possible signs of childhood cancer, including unusual lumps, swelling or ongoing pain in one area of the body. Knowing these signs is important for early detection. Make sure to take your children to their pediatrician for annual wellness exams and additional visits if your child develops concerning signs, symptoms or any other changes in their physical health and/or behavior.
There are many resources for families coping with childhood cancer:
• Hawaii Children’s Cancer Foundation: Serves families coping with cancer by offering financial support, support groups and workshops for children, families and long-term survivors. Visit www.hccf.org/.
• Pacific Cancer Foundation: Located on Maui, this group assists cancer patients (youth and adults) and their caregivers on every step of their cancer journey. PCF offers patient navigation, transportation, lodging, nutrition services, support groups, and more. Visit PCF at pacificcancerfoundation.org/.
Improving skills on living healthy can help prevent childhood obesity and can help prevent some forms of cancers. Eat a healthy diet full of fruit, vegetables, whole grains and protein; drink water rather than sugar drinks; move your body in any way that is enjoyable; get plenty of sleep; put down the screen and spend time laughing with family and friends. As a parent or guardian, it’s important to lead by example. Together, your family can live a healthier lifestyle.
For more information on childhood obesity, childhood cancers and healthy living, contact the Public Health Education office at the Maui District Health Office at (808) 984-8216.

Piping Hot Takes: A Review Of UChicagos Student Cafes (And Some Honorable Mentions) The Chicago Maroon
Piping Hot Takes: A Review Of UChicago’s Student Cafes (And Some Honorable Mentions) – The Chicago Maroon https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/piping-hot-takes-a-review-of-uchicagos-student-cafes-and-some-honorable-mentions-the-chicago-maroon/
There’s a latte to love about the cafés on and around campus, but a few stand out above the rest…
September 22, 2022
Natalie Manley
Even if Cobb doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, it’s an unspoken campus rite of passage to wander down there at least once before you graduate.
Every quarter, I spend all of my Maroon Dollars on tea and coffee. Seriously. I actually switched my dining plan from “Unlimited” to “Phoenix” my second year just to get 50 extra Maroon Dollars to spend at UChicago’s student cafes. (Sidenote: If you’re like me and only really eat two meals from the dining hall every day and would rather have extra meals from Hutch included in your dining plan instead of paying extra for them, I highly recommend the Phoenix Plan—it’s the same price as unlimited. The only downside is that it’s not available to first years.)
My wacktastical spending habits aside, there’s a reason I put all of my Maroon Dollars towards student cafes: they’re wonderful. A quintessential part of UChicago’s campus experience, student cafes have something for everyone: whether you’re hoping to catch up with some friends over a cup of joe while “working” on a P-set (let’s be honest, nobody really gets anything done on the first floor of the Reg), start your day amongst grad students and a bunch of religious art and memorabilia, or unwind after class with a game of pool, an iced chai, and an immaculate selection of music, you can’t really go wrong with any of the cafes on (or off) campus.
Don’t know where to start? Here’s my take on the greatest (and not so great) student cafés that UChicago has to offer:
* Takes Maroon Dollars.
Ex Libris *
Location: First Floor of the Regenstein Library
Instagram: @exlibriscafe
Rating: (2/5)
I would like to begin by saying I think I dislike Ex Lib more than most. Something about how gray everything is, the complete lack of decor and music, and the way my order somehow always comes out wrong just doesn’t really do it for me. Then again, the Reg doesn’t really do it for me either (I made it my personal mission last quarter to not set foot in the Reg unless I absolutely had to for a meeting or something… and succeeded). My personal bias aside, there are many reasons why people love Ex. It’s the perfect place to go “do work” only to end up bumping into a few friends and accomplishing nothing at all. It’s usually lively and is conveniently located in the center of campus, making it easy to grab a drink in between classes. You’re also bound to have at least one friend that works there (their staff is MASSIVE), so there will always be a friendly face to wave to behind the counter. And for the more experimental coffee drinkers, Ex’s weekly rotation of new and inventive drinks is also quite fun. If you ever find yourself stuck in the Reg late at night, you can catch a glimpse of the creative process behind these drinks: Ex hosts quarterly Ex After Dark events during which the baristas invent themed drinks and desserts past midnight.
Harper Cafe *
Location: Harper Library, Next to the Arley D. Cathey Learning Center
Instagram: @realharpercafe
Rating: (4/5)
I must say, out of all of the student run cafes at UChicago, Harper Cafe has the safest, coziest vibes. There’s nothing quite like grabbing a latte and a THICK slice of focaccia before class after chatting it up with one of the wonderful baristas (who all wear fun hats, by the way). Or perhaps snagging a table or a cozy chair around lunchtime and sipping a cup of tea as the sun streams in from the old Hogwartsy glass windows is more your forte. Or, for all of those night owls out there, maybe you’ll find yourself getting a quick caffeine fix (and free pastries if there are any left over at the end of the night) before heading to meet a core tutor in the Arley D. Cathey Learning Center. Regardless of what time of day you find yourself there, Harper just hits different. It falls one coffee cup short of perfection because it’s sometimes tricky to get a table or a seat and you’re not allowed to bring any food or drinks into the library next door (which is my personal favorite library on campus), but in general you can’t really go wrong with Harper.
Cobb Coffee Shop *
Location: Basement of Cobb Hall
Instagram: ??? (Like much else about Cobb, it’s a mystery.)
Rating: (1/5)
Oh Cobb. To be perfectly honest, I went to this self-proclaimed “gas station chic” cafe once and never again. Let’s just say it was…an experience. As a religious latte drinker, discovering Cobb’s lack of espresso drinks was rather devastating, but after settling on a tea I sat down at one of the gas station-esque cafeteria-style tables and remained the only person in the establishment (besides the barista) for at least twenty minutes (keep in mind, it was around 10 a.m. on a Tuesday). I tried to get some work done but couldn’t shake the feeling that I was in a dream and kept getting distracted by the film Fantasia (you know, the wizard Mickey Mouse one), which was playing silently on a VHS tape next to my table and the ceiling decor dangling over my head. All that being said, Cobb isn’t all bad. They have a large offering of pre-made meals from local Hyde Park businesses (such as Rajun Cajun and Cedars) thanks to the cafe’s large food storage area in the corner of the shop, which means they (allegedly) get quite busy around lunch time. They also have a secret menu, which features the “Cobb Mocha” (drip coffee + hot chocolate mix), and occasionally host events in conjunction with the campus radio station, WHPK. Even if Cobb doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, it’s an unspoken campus rite of passage to wander down there at least once before you graduate.
Grounds of Being
Location: Basement of the Divinity School
Instagram: @groundsofbeing
Rating: (4.5/5)
The saying at Grounds is that it’s “Where God Drinks Coffee.” Honestly, they’re probably right. The coffee is SO GOOD. The drip coffee is the cheapest on campus (even cheaper if you bring your own mug), and delicious (I don’t even like drip coffee, so that’s saying something). Their espresso is perfectly strong with earthy undertones and pairs delightfully with oat milk in an iced latte. Everything comes in fun decorated cups. The walls are covered in all sorts of religious art and memorabilia, and somehow there’s always enough space at one of the long tables to find a seat amongst the grad students and professors that frequent the spot. Grounds also opens earlier than the rest of the cafes on campus, which makes it great for early risers like myself (I know, it’s crazy, but I swear we exist). Hungry around lunch time? Grounds has you covered. Like Cobb, they also offer a wide selection of meals from local Hyde Park restaurants with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, as well as pastries and bagels (that come with free butter or cream cheese and access to the most glorious toaster on all of campus). Be sure to grab lunch early though, because the pre-made meals tend to sell out before 12:30. And, if you love Grounds as much as I do, you can also become the proud owner of a Grounds of Being mug or T-shirt. The only downside of the place is that it closes around 3 p.m. and doesn’t take cards or Maroon Dollars. But honestly, with a sign that says, “In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash,” I can’t even be mad about it.
Hallowed Grounds *
Location: Second Floor of the Reynolds Club
Instagram: @hallowed_grounds
Rating: (4.5/5)
Last of the student cafes, but certainly not least, is Hallowed Grounds. Though it’s tied as my favorite coffee shop on campus with Grounds of Being, it has the complete opposite vibe: Hallowed is open late at night (until 10 or 11 p.m. on most days) and gets progressively more lively and full of pool-playing undergrads as the day goes on. The baristas always have the coolest outfits on and have pretty immaculate music taste (seriously, 90% of my Shazam use happens in Hallowed). The iced chai lattes here are top-notch, and playing pool is free (they just hold your student ID’s hostage for a bit to make sure you return everything). Hallowed is especially cozy in the fall and wintertime and is conveniently located right on top of Hutch, Pret a Manger, and the McCormick Lounge (which is often open for students to use as a study space). You could easily spend all day in the building without having to venture out into the cold for food, coffee, or a quiet spot. As an added bonus, Hallowed hosts all kinds of events throughout the year for different student-run organizations such as Midwave Radio (an online student-run radio/talk show site) and the Organization of Black Students. Like other cafes, Hallowed falls short of perfection because it’s a bit tricky to grab a table (like I said, people tend to camp out there for the whole day), but there are plenty of comfy chairs and benches to sit on as well.
Hallowed is open late at night (until 10 or 11 p.m. on most days) and gets progressively more lively and full of pool-playing undergrads as the day goes on. (Natalie Manley)
Though they’re not student-run (and I tend to frequent them less often than the student cafes), there are a few other coffee spots on campus that deserve a shoutout:
Peach’s at University *
Location: Crerar Library, Next to the MADD Center
Rating: (3/5)
A gathering place for CS majors, the coffee and food here is really not spectacular, but I’ve got to give Peach’s props for being right next to the MADD center. After taking a short certification class, UChicago students can use the 3-D printers, sewing machines, VR sets and other cool gadgets in this space for FREE! I highly recommend checking it out if you’re looking to grab a cup of...
Bitcoin, Crypto Tokens Are ‘decentralized Ponzi Schemes,’ Says Jamie Dimon – Kitco NEWS https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/bitcoin-crypto-tokens-are-decentralized-ponzi-schemes-says-jamie-dimon-kitco-news/
(Kitco News) Jamie Dimon’s opinion on cryptocurrencies is set in stone, with JPMorgan Chase CEO describing Bitcoin and other crypto tokens as “decentralized Ponzi schemes.”
“I’m a major skeptic on crypto tokens, which you call currency, like Bitcoin,” Dimon said during his testimony before the House Financial Services Committee Wednesday. “They are decentralized Ponzi schemes, and the notion that it’s good for anybody is unbelievable.”
Crypto can also be “dangerous,” Dimon added, pointing to billions of dollars stolen via hacking, theft, and other schemes. And that’s on top of other issues, such as money laundering.
Dimon is known for his dislike and skepticism of crypto. The JPMorgan CEO called Bitcoin worthless back in October 2021 when Bitcoin was trading close to its all-time highs. So it is not that surprising that during the crypto winter, Dimon’s opinions have not changed.
A year ago, he also pointed out that “if you borrow money to buy bitcoin, you’re a fool.”
Since hitting its record high of $69,000 in November 2021, Bitcoin plunged 72%, last trading at $18,969. Aversion to risk assets has weighed heavily on the crypto sector over the summer as the Federal Reserve has aggressively raised rates by three percentage points his year, with more to come.
Dimon’s view on stablecoins is a little more favorable. The CEO of America’s largest bank stated that stablecoins are not a problem with proper regulation. He also noted that JPMorgan is pursuing different blockchain projects, including JPM Coin.
U.S. lawmakers sought comments on stablecoins as House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters and Ranking Member Patrick McHenry are trying to put together stablecoin legislation as quickly as possible.
Dimon remains uncertain about the economic outlook, describing the U.S. economy as a classic tale of two cities dominated by opposing forces.
“We continue to see strong consumer spending from solid consumer balance sheets, fueled by unprecedented economic stimulus and charge off rates on consumer credit remaining historically low. There are plentiful job openings … At the same time, many Americans are being crushed by high inflation eroding real incomes, particularly from higher prices on gas and food. Supply chain issues persist, as does a devastating war in Ukraine,” Dimon testified Wednesday.
In August, Dimon commented that “something worse” than a recession could be coming. “What is out there? There are storm clouds. Rates, QT, oil, Ukraine, war, China. If I had to put odds: soft landing 10%. Harder landing, mild recession, 20%, 30%. Harder recession, 20%, 30%. And maybe something worse at 20% to 30%,” Dimon said. “It is a bad mistake to say ‘here is my single point forecast.'”

South Korean President Overheard Insulting U.S. Congress As ‘idiots’ – The Washington Post https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/south-korean-president-overheard-insulting-u-s-congress-as-idiots-the-washington-post/
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was caught on a hot mic Wednesday insulting U.S. Congress members as “idiots” who could be a potential embarrassment for President Biden if they did not approve funding for global public health.
Yoon had just met with Biden at the Global Fund’s Seventh Replenishment Conference in New York City. There, Biden had pledged $6 billion from the United States to the public health campaign, which fights AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria worldwide. The funding would require congressional approval.
“It would be so humiliating for Biden if these idiots don’t pass it in Congress,” Yoon was overheard telling a group of aides as they left the event. Video of the exchange quickly went viral in South Korea, where Yoon took office in May.
Representatives for Yoon and for the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday. Park Hong-keun, the leader of the opposition Democratic Party in South Korea, criticized Yoon’s “foul language tarnishing the US Congress” as “a major diplomatic mishap,” Agence France-Presse reported.
Yoon and Biden were both in New York for the U.N. General Assembly, where they held discussions on the sidelines Wednesday.
“The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen the U.S.-ROK alliance and ensure close cooperation to address the threat posed by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK),” the White House said in a readout of their meeting. “The Presidents also discussed our ongoing cooperation on a broad range of priority issues including supply chain resilience, critical technologies, economic and energy security, global health, and climate change.”

Here’s One Way Hoteliers Can Ensure Their Front Desk Delivers An Exceptional Guest Experience | – Hotel Technology News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/heres-one-way-hoteliers-can-ensure-their-front-desk-delivers-an-exceptional-guest-experience-hotel-technology-news/
Front desk staff book taxis for your guests with one click of a button. The device seamlessly enhances your guest’s experience, enabling the concierge and reception to focus on other, more essential tasks.
By Thomas Kruyne, Managing Director, Venue Butler – 9.22.2022
As a hotel manager, you naturally aim to make an excellent first impression on your guests from the moment they arrive. But having a positive first impression is not enough. You would like to keep it up until the moment your guests leave. The clock is ticking! At such times, your hotel’s front desk operations are vital. Efficiency is the keyword. Your receptionists must be efficient in performing multiple tasks, sometimes at the same time. Venue Butler can make a guest’s experience truly remarkable. “How?” you might ask. Let’s get into the details.
1. First impressions are the most lasting
Poor front desk staff efficiency can reduce the positive first impression you worked hard to create and disrupt the guests’ experience throughout their stay. Think about this: Every guest staying at your property will have to engage with front-of-house staff at some point, face-to-face, on the phone, or even online. The receptionists are the ones who must confront the difficulties brought up by the guests and provide them with solutions.
Multi-tasking is a must-have skill for front desk staff. Easier said than done, right? To expect them to perform multiple tasks and take care of your guests efficiently, as a hotelier, you should provide your front desk staff with everything they need. This includes providing them with the latest tools, and Venue Butler is the perfect tool to start with! Venue Butler’s taxi booking device allows your front desk staff to book taxis for your guests with one click of a button. The device seamlessly enhances your guest’s experience, enabling the concierge and reception to focus on other, more essential tasks.
Imagine this: a receptionist or concierge is running around checking in a newly arriving guest, picking up the phone to make a new reservation, and making a room key for another guest. The last thing they want to be doing is picking up the phone to the taxi company or going outside to hail a cab for their guests. That’s where our free taxi booking device comes in. One click of a button and the taxi is already on its way to their hotel. A moment later the concierge can see the driver’s name and arrival on-screen and tell the guest that their taxi will be there in precisely 5 minutes.

2. Time is of the essence
Travelers are impatient. As a hotelier, you know that a customer’s time is important time. According to the 2022 Travel Digital Experience Benchmark Report by Contentsquare, today’s traveler wants quick answers and expects immediate results. This phenomenon is valid even before the guest arrives at your hotel. For example, if their experience on your website is too slow, they will likely get frustrated and check another hotel’s website. The likelihood of a user bouncing increases by 32% between the first one to three seconds.
Viewers who receive fast online services and feel satisfied are most likely to become your guests. This also means they will expect the same quick responses and immediate action from your hotel’s front desk staff.

3. Enjoy the excellence in the hospitality industry proven by experience
With over 15 million successful rides globally, this taxi booking device has improved the hospitality industry’s guest experience by making taxi booking easier for both guests and receptionists. Thanks to Venue Butler, receptionists can work much more efficiently and provide their guests with taxis on time. It means that the staff can focus on what matters; an excellent guest experience!
“Venue Butler is so convenient! Our guests LOVE it for how easy to use and efficient it is. Our doormen no longer have to walk to a corner to catch a cab for guests or call car services. Long gone are the days where you have to stand in a corner to wave a cab down in the cold, rain or snow. The service is amazing,” says Catherine Severino, Complex Sales Manager at Hilton Midtown Cluster in New York City.
“What a great idea the Venue Butler is! Thank you so much for letting us use this method. Massive help for us, especially on the weekends,” says the front desk team of Doubletree Hilton Hotel and Spa.
4. A win-win strategy: Efficient staff, happy guests at zero cost
The most frequently asked question about Venue Butler is about the cost of it. It is free! The one-click, smart taxi booking device provided is 100% free charge for all venues with unlimited usage. There are no hidden costs, fees or catches.
Considering all these points, Venue Butler proves to be a powerful tool to increase your hotel’s front desk efficiency. Automation in the hotel industry aims to eliminate the number of routine tasks hotel staff perform while improving the guest experience. The automation offered by Venue Butler will decrease errors and free up more time for your front desk staff to focus on your guests.
Especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, the interest in automation in the hospitality industry, particularly in hotels, has been growing . At least three out of four hoteliers included in Review Pro’s research consider automation to be the critical factor in the recovery of the hospitality industry.
As travelers’ preferences keep evolving, numerous hotels attempt to take up the challenge and provide quality accommodations aligned with the best guest experience catering to their needs. Hoteliers are pivoting away from conventional methods and adopting a creative approach to improve the guest experience.

The Quest To Find The Ultimate Fish Taco – Saveur https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/the-quest-to-find-the-ultimate-fish-taco-saveur/
I’m a New England kid and whenever I travel, I’m always on the hunt for regional seafood specialties—from New Orleans’ crispiest fried oyster loaves to Patagonia’s cheesiest crab dip to to my own home state’s briniest bowl of chowder, meals from the sea always make me feel a little more at home in a new place. So when I was planning my beach vacation to Mexico recently, I knew I’d only be lounging poolside for so long before the itch to find some exceptional fish tacos kicked in. That’s how I wound up at Paradero, a new sea-to-table hotel in Todos Santos.
Todos Santos is an agriculturally rich oasis in the blistering desert of Baja California Sur, some 50 miles north of Los Cabos. Separating the hotel and the Pacific Ocean is a sweeping poblano chile field that creeps up the Sierra Laguna Mountains. Some guests decompress by pool or under the stars in rooftop hammocks. Others take organic agriculture classes on the on-site kitchen garden or mountain bike through the surrounding farm country. And sure, I certainly did some of that—but like I said, I was mostly there for the fish.

Baja is well-known for its excellent and diverse seafood. On an earlier visit to the region, I had dived deep (literally) for a beloved local bivalve and enjoyed mounds of ceviche and aguachile. The peninsula’s fish tacos are particularly legendary, though, so I asked Paradero’s mountain biking guide, Diego Bautista, to show me around some of his favorite taco spots in town. Fast-talking and tall, Bautista is a Todos Santos local who lights up when asked about his hometown’s restaurants. “We really just have the best seafood here,” he told me, “so much better than Cabo.”
Guests can enjoy a cold drink and light bites—including tacos—in Paradero’s common areas. Photography by Kat Craddock
Unlike densely developed Los Cabos, Todos Santos (T.S. to locals) is quiet. At least for now, there’s plenty of high-quality local fish to go around to both no-fuss stools-in-the-sand restaurants and to more formal, chef-driven kitchens like the one at Paradero. When most think of Baja-style tacos, they imagine battered and deep-fried white fish—and we certainly sampled a lot of that in T.S. Most notable was the version served at Barracuda Cantina, which is Bautista’s favorite in the region. The cooks at this beachside restaurant coat fat strips of the day’s catch—grouper, when I was there—in a featherlight beer batter, then top the golden-fried fish with a crunchy slaw, fiery habanero salsa, guac, and a sprinkling of pico de gallo. It’s an exceptional example of the familiar style, best enjoyed between sips of one of the cantina’s tart-smoky-sweet mezcal cocktails.

After a short detour to Bautista’s favorite cevicheria, we got back to the taco task at hand. We headed further into town where the folks at Santo Chilote were making a more freestyle riff on the region’s battered-and-fried fish. There, sweet coconut-crusted shrimp are served unadorned atop chewy flour tortillas, and diners are free to top their own tacos, salad-bar style. My guide walked me through his preferred fixings: a few dots of fruity, Caribbean-style habanero sauce, pickled jalapeños, a generous drizzle of cooling crema, and a squeeze of lime. I followed his lead and didn’t regret it.
Back at Paradero, executive chef and Pujol alum Eduardo Ríos takes a more refined approach to the fish taco. His team nixtamalizes heirloom corn for handmade tortillas, which are fired off twice a day on a traditional wood-fired clay comal. Here too, the menu varies with the day’s catch. When Bautista and I returned to the hotel, stuffed from our hours-long eating excursion, Ríos was frying soft-shell crabs, which he then perched atop a tangle of tomato-pepper slaw, basil guac, and warm corn tortillas. A dollop of sesame salsa roja balanced the sweet crab with a fragrant and peppery heat; I devoured the thing in three, maybe four bites. While Ríos’s preparations are certainly more elegant and complex than the tacos we enjoyed in town, the chef doesn’t stray far from the spirit of the local formula, so rooted in impossibly fresh seafood.
The beauty of Todos Santos’ many tacos is, in part, their simplicity. While I couldn’t take Baja’s breathtaking backdrop with me, these days I find a glimmer of vacation by sourcing good-quality fish closer to home. If you’re staycationing this season, these recipes are a great way to make the Mexican seaside seem just a little bit closer.

Plant-Based Chicken Maker Opens US Headquarters, R&D Center – Food Business News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/plant-based-chicken-maker-opens-us-headquarters-rd-center-food-business-news/
CHICAGO — Next Gen Foods, a producer of alternative meats, has officially established its US headquarters in Chicago. The company has simultaneously opened a new R&D center in the city, created in partnership with The Hatchery Chicago.
Originally based out of Singapore, Next Gen was founded in 2020 as a developer of sustainable plant-based foods. The company announced its plans for US expansion earlier this year, following a $100 million round of Series A funding.
Next Gen already has launched its flagship chicken alternative, Tindle, in Chicago, currently featured in various menu items at more than 15 restaurants in the city.
“As Tindle has experienced incredible, sustained growth in the past 15 months — much of it in the US — now is the perfect time to solidify our presence here as we finalize our home base in Chicago,” said Andre Menezes, chief executive officer and co-founder of Next Gen Foods. “As a new resident myself, I’m constantly inspired by this city and the potential it holds for the future of the plant-based food industry, but also food innovation in general.”
Part of the Industrial Council of Nearwest Chicago’s food business incubator, the Hatchery’s 67,000-square-foot facility will house Next Gen’s R&D center.
The company will use the facility to explore and develop new plant-based products in conjunction with Next Gen’s existing R&D centers in Singapore and Europe. The center also will serve as the company’s starting point for scaling into US sales channels, including foodservice and retail.
“We established Next Gen Foods with the mission to make saving the planet easy, enjoyable and delicious,” Mr. Menezes said. “By both geographically and strategically establishing a base in the center of the food world in Chicago, this will allow us to further develop our partnerships in the F&B community and strengthen consumer adoption of plant-based meats through ongoing research and development.”

The White House is hosting a Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health on Wednesday, Sept. 28, and a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) has been invited to attend. Juanita Wilson, co-chairperson of the Nikwasi Initiative, is excited to learn about food sovereignty issues specifically how it can be addressed in Indian Country.

Information from the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services states that the goal of the conference is, “End hunger and increase healthy eating and physical activity by 2030, so that fewer Americans experience diet-related diseases like diabetes, obesity, and hypertension.”
It continues, “The toll of hunger and these diseases is not distributed equally, disproportionately impacting underserved communities, including communities of color, people living in rural areas, people are differently-abled, older adults, LGBTQI+ people, military families, and military veterans. Lack of access to healthy, safe, and affordable food, and to safe outdoor spaces, contributes to hunger, diet-related diseases, and health disparities.”
“It’s critical for tribes to have voices, and it is even more important for tribes to have administrative-level seats at the table,” said Wilson.
In addition to working with the Nikwasi Initiative, she is a member of the EBCI Public Health and Human Services Healthy Eating Advocacy Team (HEAT). “We have been searching for particular projects to help cement our purpose. I hope to learn what other Indigenous communities are doing that has been successful but also what continues to be challenges for them.”
She added, “In our own community, I believe federal guidelines for the programs we have are dragging so much red tape that we are focused on making sure we don’t get ‘cheated’ by people working the system than we are with figuring out how to help them get ahead.”
Wilson was invited to the Conference through her work with the Nikwasi Initiative “because one of our key goals is to re-awaken Cherokee culture that includes traditional agricultural ways and diets.”
According to information from the Nikwasi Initiative, it “was founded to promote, interpret, and link cultural and historic sites – such as Noquisiyi (alternate word used for Nikwasi) and Cowee mounds – along a Cherokee Cultural Corridor, along with raising awareness and funds to pursue those efforts and exploring more opportunities for collaboration between the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and local communities”.
In 2019, the Franklin Town Council voted to transfer the deed to Nikwasi Mound to the Nikwasi Initiative who has served as its caretakers since.
Review Calls For Shake-Up Of English Domestic Cricket The Indian Express
Review Calls For Shake-Up Of English Domestic Cricket – The Indian Express https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/review-calls-for-shake-up-of-english-domestic-cricket-the-indian-express/
Domestic cricket in England could see a major shake-up if county sides vote through proposals that would create a six-team top division and reduce the amount of games played across formats.
Former England test captain Andrew Strauss spent the last six months overseeing a high performance review for the England and Wales Cricket Board, launched in the aftermath of the 4-0 loss in Australia in the Ashes. The review presented 17 recommendations, 15 of which fall under the remit of the ECB and already have the required backing. Two key proposals involve a wholesale reorganization of the county calendar and need the support of at least 12 of the 18 first-class counties to go ahead.
Strauss’ panel advocates a reduction from 14 matches per team in the County Championship to 10, with a six-team top division sitting above two secondary conferences who would play off for one annual promotion. Games would be played more evenly throughout the season in this four-day format, rather than the current model that sees matches crammed into the start and the end of the campaign — either side of the new Hundred tournament.
The men’s High Performance Review has today published its final report – setting out 17 recommendations for cricket to consider and implement
The full report is available to view:
— England and Wales Cricket Board (@ECB_cricket) September 22, 2022
The Blast, a Twenty20 tournament and a popular cash cow for several counties, would also be pared back from 14 group games to 10, with the 50-over Royal London Cup moved to April as a curtain-raising knockout tournament. The overall reduction in days is intended to create time for more rest, coaching and analysis, creating more intense competition.
While that is likely to go down well with a large proportions of players, many of whom have found the 2022 model an unsatisfactory mish-mash of competitions and formats, there is a clear financial implication at stake. Fewer matches will mean less revenue, not only at the gate but also among the membership, who will effectively see less cricket for their money.
Strauss, whose mission statement is to make England the best cross-format team in the world within five years, said he believes the “status quo is not an option.” “Everyone in the game is telling us this. We have listened, we must now act,” Strauss said.
“I honestly feel this set of proposals can make a massive difference to the game. Of course, anything in our domestic structure is very contentious and it’s for the game to go away, talk and debate. We can still do a lot of good without the final two recommendations, but I think they’re a good demonstration of the hard decisions we need to make as a game, and how serious we are in trying to achieve this ambition.” Strauss said he wants to have a “coherent schedule.”
“The answer to quality is not quantity. A higher standard, more intense red-ball competition should be a great thing for members, for players, for ground staff, for coaches. We need to understand it’s not all about volume,” he said. “We think it’s a very complete package but there are going to be elements of it that certain people feel are not in their interest, and we understand that. That’s the reality of the domestic structure. You can’t solve one thing without unsolving another.”
A final decision on the structural changes should come by the end of November, but the earliest they could be adopted is the 2024 season — meaning one more year of a structure that Strauss’ team has effectively discredited. “We’ve been in a race against time to get these recommendations out there so that the counties can vote on it for the 2023 season, but I think we’ve run out of time,” he said.
“But these are difficult conversations and important decisions. Sometimes you’ve got to look at the bigger picture and understand that it’s better to walk to the right solution than jump off the edge of a cliff.”

Crypto M&A Slows As Its Own Type Of Winter Sets In Crunchbase News
Crypto M&A Slows As Its Own Type Of Winter Sets In – Crunchbase News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/crypto-ma-slows-as-its-own-type-of-winter-sets-in-crunchbase-news/
After a fast start to the year, M&A deal-making in crypto has hit its own type of “winter.”
Earlier this month, one-click checkout company Bolt dropped plans to buy crypto and payment infrastructure company Wyre for $1.5 billion. The news came just more than three weeks after digital asset investment firm Galaxy Digital called off its proposed $1.2 billion acquisition of Palo Alto, California-based BitGo.

The abandoned deals—with about $2.7 billion combined—help illustrate what appears to be a cooling M&A landscape as the crypto industry tries to find its level after hitting all-time highs last year.
The market
According to Crunchbase data, M&A activity targeting VC-backed crypto startups hit an all-time high in the first quarter of the year when 16 were announced. However, deal pace has reverted to barely a trickle, with just seven deals in the last nearly two full quarters.
While deal count has slowed to a drip, there also have not been many large deals. Silvergate Bank’s purchase of the tech assets of blockchain-based payment network Diem—the stablecoin originally developed by Facebook engineers—for $182 million is the largest deal involving a VC-backed entity for the year.
Perhaps that should not come as a surprise given the current market conditions. All of the dealmaking announced in the first quarter came just weeks or months after Bitcoin and many cryptocurrencies hit all-time highs in November—with Bitcoin itself flirting with $68,000.
Since those heady days, Bitcoin has fallen more than 70% and has frequently traded below $19,000.
Just as investors have abandoned the cryptocurrency market, some venture investors also have slowed the pace of their investment in the sector. Investment in VC-backed crypto companies slowed during the first half of the year and seems unlikely to hit last year’s high of nearly $19 billion.
M&A deal-making seems to have followed suit, as companies like Bolt and Galaxy Digital had second thoughts on the deals both companies announced in the second quarter to much fanfare before calling them off in Q3.
Looking for a deal
That is not to say that deal flow will continue to be slow or completely stop—in fact, it could pick up.
It only makes sense for companies that announced deals early in the year to pull out as valuations around the crypto sector have dropped. Those drops in valuations could bring in more buyers as companies and individuals look for a good deal.
FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried has shown he is more than ready to look for possible deals and said in an recent interview with CNBC’s Squawk Box that the exchange giant has at least $1 billion to use on acquisitions and bailouts.
FTX is the front-runner to buy the assets of crypto lender Voyager Digital—which filed for bankruptcy in July—CoinDesk reported last week.
Crypto exchange giant Coinbase also has made its intentions in the space clear. During the company’s Q2 earnings call last month, Coinbase’s President and COO Emilie Choi said the company will continue to be active across both ventures and M&A—adding that those tools have helped the company gain access to innovation in the crypto ecosystem.
“It’s an area that has helped us gain access to the innovation happening in the crypto ecosystem,” she said. “And crypto winters we view as builders’ markets. It’s often the best time for us to be greedy when others are fearful.”

Weekly jobless claims increase 5,000 to 213,000
Continuing claims drop 22,000 to 1.379 million
WASHINGTON, Sept 22 (Reuters) – The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits increased moderately last week, indicating the labor market remains tight despite the Federal Reserve’s attempt to cool demand with aggressive interest rate increases.
The weekly unemployment claims report from the Labor Department on Thursday, the most timely data on the economy’s health, suggested that job growth remained solid this month. The U.S. central bank delivered a 75-basis-point rate hike on Wednesday, its third straight increase of that magnitude. It signaled more large increases to come this year. read more
“Fed officials are hitting the brakes hard, but so far employers are just giving this policy a great, big yawn and holding on tight to their workers,” said Christopher Rupkey, chief economist at FWDBONDS. “It’s either that or there is some sort of stealth job losses where those made redundant are not getting unemployment benefits.”

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 213,000 for the week ended Sept. 17, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Data for the prior week was revised to show 5,000 fewer applications filed than previously reported. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 218,000 applications for the latest week.
Fed Chair Jerome Powell told reporters on Wednesday that “there’s only modest evidence that the labor market is cooling off,” describing it as continuing “to be out of balance.” read more
Since March, the Fed has raised its policy rate by three percentage points to the current range of 3.00% to 3.25%.
Unadjusted claims rose 19,385 to a still-low 171,562 last week. There was a surge in applications in Michigan and notable increases in California, Georgia, Massachusetts and New York. Only Indiana reported a significant decrease in filings.
Economists say companies are hoarding workers after experiencing difficulties hiring in the past year as the COVID-19 pandemic forced some people out of the workforce, in part because of prolonged illness caused by the virus.
There were 11.2 million job openings at the end of July, with two jobs for every unemployed person.
U.S. stocks opened lower. The dollar rose against a basket of currencies. U.S. Treasury prices fell.
NO MATERIAL CHANGE
The claims report covered the period during which the government surveyed businesses for the nonfarm payrolls portion of September’s employment report.
Applications fell 32,000 between the August and September survey periods. Payrolls increased by 315,000 jobs in August. Employment is now 240,000 jobs above its pre-pandemic level.
“There are no signs here of a change in labor market fundamentals,” said Conrad DeQuadros, senior economic advisor at Brean Capital in New York.
The number of people receiving benefits after an initial week of aid decreased 22,000 to 1.379 million in the week ending Sept. 10. Data next week on the so-called continuing claims, a proxy for hiring, will shed more light on September’s employment picture.
The Fed on Wednesday raised its median forecast for the unemployment rate this year to 3.8% from its previous forecast of 3.7% in June. It boosted its estimate for 2023 to 4.4% from the 3.9% projected in June, a move that economists viewed as recessionary. The jobless rate rose to 3.7% in August from 3.5% in July.
“Historically, an increase in the unemployment rate of this magnitude over a year has been followed by a recession,” said Ryan Sweet, a senior economist at Moody’s Analytics in West Chester, Pennsylvania. “The jury is still out on whether the Fed can pull off a soft landing.”

How to display multiple grand total rows in a Microsoft Excel PivotTable
Image: wachiwit/Adobe Stock
While the PivotTable function is fairly easy to use in Microsoft Excel, the feature does not easily show grand totals across the table. Susan Harkins previously taught us how to display subtotals in PivotTable, and now she shows you how to build and use grand total rows.
TL;DR: This process involves several steps and is counter-intuitive at times. But the end result can ease the burden of working in PivotTables for many users.

Uber investigating security breach of several internal systems

Uber suffered a security breach on Thursday, September 15, that exposed company information via Slack and several internal databases. The breach was revealed when the hacker made a post on the ride sharing company’s internal Slack: “I announce I am a hacker and Uber has suffered a data breach.”
TL;DR: The hack occurred through social engineering techniques. While breaches of this sort cannot be completely avoided, companies should ensure the proper training and guardrails are in place to prevent and mitigate attacks before sensitive information is exposed.

Uber exposes Lapsus$ extortion group for security breach

In a follow-up article to last week’s breaking news of the Uber hack, Lance Whitney explains how the Lapsus$ hacker group allegedly carried out their attack on the ridesharing company. The social engineering attack was carried out in two stages: A hacker stole a contractor’s login via a fake two-factor authentication request, and another hacker purchased the credentials on the dark web and sent a series of two-factor authentication requests to the contractor. The contractor eventually accepted one of those requests, allowing entry to the systems.
TL;DR: Humans are the weakest link in the security chain. Organizations must provide ongoing training and awareness of the latest threats to help employees at all levels identify and report suspicious behaviors.

Password protection in Microsoft Excel is useful for limiting access to full worksheets or data sets, but it can also be used to allow multiple users to access data while limiting the data each can edit. Susan Harkins shows you how to use the Allow Edit Ranges feature to do this.
TL;DR: You can password protect an entire sheet, while also allowing access for individual users to update the cells you assign to them. This password protection is not a security measure, however, and is intended to prevent users overwriting their colleagues’ work.

Windows has released an update to Windows 11 and will continue to roll out new features monthly and as part of Patch Tuesdays. This schedule of regular updates is meant to increase the security and usability of the operating system, while giving IT professionals more control over what they release to organizations.
TL;DR: Don’t count on new features to be released every month. The new system is meant to ensure that Microsoft is releasing quality features when they’re ready and not according to an artificial deadline like an annual release.

Hamlin Vs. Castlewood Herreid-Selby Area Vs. Sully Buttes Match Rated Teams. Watertown Public Opinion
Hamlin Vs. Castlewood, Herreid-Selby Area Vs. Sully Buttes Match Rated Teams. – Watertown Public Opinion https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/hamlin-vs-castlewood-herreid-selby-area-vs-sully-buttes-match-rated-teams-watertown-public-opinion/
If you’re a high school football fan in the area, there are differently some prime viewing opportunities this weekend.
Some of the top options follow.
Pierre at Watertown
Senior quarterback Lincoln Kienholz and the five-time defending Class 11AA state football champion Pierre Governors (4-0) are set to visit Watertown (1-3) in an Eastern South Dakota Conference game at 7 p.m. Friday.
Kienholz, who is fun to watch and has signed to play for Milbank native Kalen DeBoer at the University of Washington, has completed 74 of 105 passes for 1,280 yards and 19 touchdowns this season. He’s also dangerous with his feet, leading the Govs in rushing with 302 yards and four touchdowns. Junior tight end Jett Zabel (21 receptions for 290 yards and five touchdowns) and senior receiver Jack Merkwan (20-505 with five TDs) have been Kienholz’s favorite targets.
Watertown hasn’t beaten Pierre since the 2016 season opener, but there’s a catch. The two squads didn’t play from 2017-2020 when the Arrows were a Class 11AAA team. The teams met again last year with Pierre winning 52-42 during the regular season and 38-9 in the playoffs.
Herreid/Selby Area vs. Sully Buttes
Third-ranked Sully Buttes (5-0) hosts No. 1 Herreid/Selby Area (4-0) at 7 p.m. Friday in a matchup of top Class 9B teams.
The Wolverines advanced to the Class 9A state championship game last fall before losing to Howard. They dropped down to Class 9B and haven’t missed a beat, outscoring their foes by a 206-46 margin.
Running back Brenden Begeman has already scored 15 touchdowns (11 rushing and four receiving) in four games. Quarterback Tray Hettick is another leader for for Herreid/Selby Area.
Sully Buttes has enjoyed a quick start and has outscored five teams by a 176-28 margin.
The catch is that the Chargers’ perfect start has come against teams that currently have a combined record 5-17. Herreid/Selby Area’s four opponents are a combined 8-12, including 4-1 Timber Lake and 3-2 Ipswich.
Hamlin at Castlewood
Third-ranked Class 9AA Hamlin (5-0) visits No. 3 Class 9A Castlewood (4-0) at 7 p.m. Friday. The Chargers have been dominant, having outscored their five foes by a 235-24 margin. The host Warriors have been similar. After a 20-14 season-opening win over fourth-ranked Class 9B De Smet, Castlewood has won three more games by a combined 164-13 margin.
Running back Luke Fraser is a big threat for Hamlin. He’s rushed for 761 yards and 11 touchdowns and caught four passes for 171 yards and four touchdowns. He’s tough to stop.
However, that’s not it for Hamlin. Quarterback Tyson Stevenson has completed 26 of 38 passes for 598 yards and 12 touchdowns. Zac VanMeeteren has caught eight passes for 199 yards and has scored five TDs. Evan Stormo has nine catches for 154 yards and four scores on the season.
Castlewood has spread the wealth more, although quarterback Lane Tvedt has been a big factor. He has rushed for 269 yards and eight touchdowns and completed 23 of 48 passes for 478 yards. Jackson Schofield, Booker Schooley, Carson Kirwan and Quincy Thu each have caught four passes and scored at least two touchdowns.
The battle of Hamlin County features two of the best programs and coaches going in Hamlin’s Jeff Sheehan and Castlewood’s Doug Ruesink.
Aberdeen Central plays at Huron Friday night in Eastern South Dakota Conference action, while undefeated Aberdeen Roncalli, ranked No. 5 in Class 11B, has the weekend off.

This was the summer that everyone decided to travel again. Sixty percent of Americans had plans for a summer vacation, according to a 2022 summer travel survey by Deloitte. And good for them. After being locked up for over two years due to the pandemic, we all deserved a much-needed getaway.
But goodness, was that vacation hard-earned this year. With soaring gas prices, road trips were costly. With limited flights, pricey airfare tickets, and frequent flight delays and cancellations, flying was tumultuous. This summer had the highest airfare prices on record for the past five years, according to Hopper, a flight price tracking app. Once you got to your destination, limited staffing and big crowds often meant more waiting in lines. Employment in the leisure and hospitality sector is still below its February 2020 level by 7.1 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In short, high fuel prices, labor shortages, and post-pandemic wanderlust created a perfect storm. “Traveling this summer required a lot of flexibility and getting creative, bringing a whole new meaning to requiring a sense of adventure,” says Mollie Krengel, founder of Wild Bum, a platform for curated travel guides.
Summer, though, is always the busiest and most expensive time to travel. But fall? That’s when you can expect fewer crowds and more savings. “With so much demand and chaos in the travel industry this summer, the good news is that we are seeing flight prices drop for the fall, which is a relief for people who were shocked by the prices they saw this summer,” says Melanie Lieberman, global features editor at The Points Guy, a travel intel site. “We’re encouraging travelers to think of places that are not typically fall destinations. If you’re OK traveling in the off season, you can get a better deal.”
Here are some cost-saving tips for traveling this fall and early winter season—and a few ideas for where to go.
1. Book Ahead
The old travel adage is still true: don’t wait until the last minute to book because you’ll likely be subjected to the highest prices and the lowest inventory. So, plan ahead. “Be proactive. Track flights and set alerts so you know if the price has dropped,” says Lieberman. Airfare search engine sites like Skyscanner, Scott’s Cheap Flights, and SkiPlagged can help you fine tune the best airfare rates to your destination—or help you pick a destination with the best deals.
Same with lodging: Book in advance for the best rates. “We recommend planning your accommodation far in advance, since last-minute bookings tend to be more expensive and harder to find,” says Kristen Bor, founder of the Bearfoot Theory, an outdoors and travel blog. At the Hotel Zags, in downtown Portland, Oregon, score the Book Early, Stay Late package, and if you make your reservation at least five days in advance, you’ll get 15 percent off the nightly rate and a late 2 P.M. checkout. (You can also borrow a bike, fishing rod, or yoga mat from the hotel’s gear shed in the lobby.)
2. Be Flexible with Your Dates
“If you can, play around with arrival and departure dates because that’s where you can unlock the biggest deals,” Lieberman says. If you search for flights on Kayak, for example, the site will show you price ranges for different dates, so you can select the cheapest days to travel.
Sometimes, the longer you stay, the better the rate. In Austin, Texas, rates are automatically discounted when you book three or more nights at the Heywood Hotel; same at the Carpenter Hotel, which gives you 15 percent off your rate if you book for three nights or more. Sonder, a room rental site with well-designed hotel-style rooms for rent everywhere from New Orleans to Barcelona, encourages longer visits by offering 25 percent off if you stay for a week, and up to 40 percent off if you stay longer.
Boutique Homes, which lists unique vacation rentals around the world, has a deals spection, offering special long-term rates and last-minute discounts. For example, stay at this eclectic home in Granada, Nicaragua, via Boutique Homes, and you’ll get 10 percent off the nightly rate of $270 a night if you stay for a week.
3. Take a Road Trip
The best way to save on airfare prices? Drive. Yes, gas is expensive, too, but try renting an electric car or not traveling too far from home. “Consider renting a campervan for your trip. It will give you a taste of van life, and depending on the region and length of your road trip, renting a camper van can still be less expensive than booking a hotel every night,” says Bor. “Campgrounds are much cheaper than hotels or Airbnbs.”
Outdoorsy, the peer-to-peer RV and campervan rental site, now offers Roamly travel insurance and a new option to pay for your rental over four, interest-free payments. If you’re driving a campervan or RV, consider joining an RV club like Boondockers Welcome or Harvest Hosts, which you’ll pay an annual fee, then you get unlimited access to stay for free on hosts’ properties around the country.
Don’t want to camp? That’s OK. The new evo Hotel, which opened in Salt Lake City, Utah, in February, currently has a road trip package, where if you book a room at the hotel and drive there, they’ll give you $50 in gas credit with your room. “For help finding the cheapest gas while traveling, the Gas Buddy app is a must,” adds Bor. “Pro tip: gas prices tend to increase on weekends and holidays, so filling your tank on Monday rather than Sunday will help you pinch a few pennies.”
4. Go Farther Afield
Be willing to explore off the beaten path for a better deal—and a better experience. “When you find obscure places, you can find better deals and cooler spots with less people,” Krengel says. “Any change of scenery does wonders for our mental health, for disconnecting from the everyday. Try renting a tiny house on a little lake within a few hours from your house. You don’t have to go far or spend that much to give yourself that experience of getting away.”
Say, instead of going to Vermont for fall foliage in October—where prices and crowds will be at their peak—consider, say, West Virginia, which has beautiful fall hikes, some of the best fall whitewater rafting in the country, and better deals. After Labor Day until the end of October, the Summersville Dam releases from Summersville Lake into the Gauley River, creating what’s known as Gauley season. Adventures on the Gorge runs day trips on the Upper and Lower Gauley.
5. Consider Alternative Lodging
Like airfare prices, lodging rates have gone up, too. You can score hotel deals via the same booking sites that enable you to shop for flights—sites like Kayak, Expedia, or Monondo. There can be cost-saving benefits to booking an Airbnb, too. “Booking a rental property can be a great way to save not just on the per night price, but if you have a kitchen, you’re not paying to go out for every meal,” Lieberman says. “But be mindful with vacation rental sites and make sure you’re click through and see the total, as there are cleaning fees and other fees that you may not see in your initial room rate.”
If you’re willing to consider more rustic or unique accommodations, check out sites like Hipcamp, GlampingHub, or use Airbnb’s camping filter. You can stay in a cottage in the middle of an organic farm in Ohio for $99 a night, via Hipcamp, or a tiny house in the mountains of Colorado for $175 a night, via Airbnb. Or stay for free by becoming a vetted house sitter at TrustedHousesitters, or sleep in an old fire lookout tower in the wilderness for next to nothing.
6. Bundle Your Booking
Remember that your time is valuable, so spending hours searching for a great deal isn’t always in your best interest. “Sign up for emails from your favorite airlines or travel sites and you’ll hear about travel packages that they’re offering to certain destinations that might include airfare and hotel,” says Krengel. “Consider the amount of time you’re saving if you’re not having to spend hours researching and booking.”
If you book a flight with Aha Airlines, a budget airline and adventure company, you can also book tours and activities, like sailing cruises, guided hiking, or brewery tours in your destination, and get 15 percent off rates. Aha has great deals on flights into Nevada’s Reno-Tahoe airport, currently starting as low as $39 one way from select cities. Once you’re there, book a room at the chic Coachman Hotel in South Lake Tahoe, California, where rooms start at $139 a night if you go midweek in the fall, compared to weekend rates that cost double that.
7. Insure Your Trip
“Get a great deal, but don’t forget to protect the money you’re putting into travel,” Lieberman says. “You’ll be glad you did if you need to make a change to your reservation.” Lieberman recommends getting travel insurance, whether you’re taking a big international trip or you’re just going away for the weekend. You may want to consider a ‘cancel for any reason travel’ insurance, which typically refunds up to 75 percent of your non-refundable trip costs if you need to cancel within a set number of days. Seven Corners has affordable trip insurance, or check out Insure My Trip to shop around for the best travel insurance deal.
