The internet got ruined by the arrival of everybody
The internet got ruined by the arrival of everybody
The clock ticked past midnight half an hour ago. I’m not so much playing the “stay up late to avoid the arrival of tomorrow” game, as much as “trying to fit too much into today”. I’m bad at it. Why…

When The Pursuit Of Less Becomes More
When The Pursuit Of Less Becomes More
If you’ve read more than 2 of my blog posts, you will know I yearn for a simpler time. A time pre-smartphone, where everything didn’t rely on my having a computer in my pocket — whilst also loving technology. There is no getting away from the feelings, but I have become to realise that if you are not paying attention, how ridiculous the pursuit of less can become. One of my favourite sub-Reddits is r/dumbphones, it is wonderful to see the phones people are still using and the ones available if you look hard enough.

Why Are So Many Pedestrians Getting Killed in the United States?
Why Are So Many Pedestrians Getting Killed in the United States?
Emily Badger, Ben Blatt, and Josh Katz, New York Times (via Clive Thompson):1 Sometime around 2009, American roads started to become deadlier for pedestrians, particularly at night. Fatalities have risen ever since, reversing the effects of decades of safety improvements. And it’s not clear why. What’s even more perplexing: Nothing resembling this pattern has occurred […]

People have always been ignorant and weird.
People have always been ignorant and weird.
Ryan Broderick, writing at Garbage Day about some goofball who had gone viral on TikTok and was getting piled-upon: I think most people are extremely weird and don’t know it. And the deranged content they were unawarely posting to their friends and families on Facebook 10 years ago, is now going on TikTok in the form of a video that features their face. When they post that content, it attracts other similar weirdos, but also a ton of attention from people who aren’t the same kind of weirdo.

Moments of Joy: Technical Solutions
Moments of Joy: Technical Solutions
I have a static website. This means that whenever I make a change to the site I need to “rebuild” each page. This involves taking the content of the page – for example, a blog post – and turning it into a full page, ready to be served to a reader. I built a custom tool to generate my site as an engineering challenge. I had – and have – a lot of fun tinkering with my site, even though the underlying source code is not as elegant as it could be.

Don’t Fear Failure
Don’t Fear Failure
Perhaps I have listened to too many bro-podcasts over the last few days, but I am led to believe that a massive fear of failure exists in people. I fail at so many things that perhaps I am desensitised to the whole experience, but there is absolutely nothing to fear from not getting the result you wanted. I should preface this with a warning about taking unneeded risks and not ruining things that make huge changes to your life — but outside this, fail hard and often.

Things I don't have to do
Things I don't have to do
I spent a lot of time and energy in my life worrying about things I felt like I had to do for one reason or another. Either everyone else was doing the thing, or specific people were pressuring me to do the thing, or I never saw real examples or models of people who didn’t do the thing, etc. At some point I started to realize that, if I really challenged myself, I didn’t have to do some of the things I believed I had to in order to win at life (and I would include the idea of having to “win at life” on this list).

Using date-based CSS to make old web pages *look* old
How do you know you're looking at an old website? You may have found a page which has lots of interesting information, but how can you tell it's a modern and relevant result? Some websites don't contain dates in their URls. There may not be a © date or publication date shown on the page. […]
