Paul Thomas Anderson’s films are not and have never been “mainstream.”
They are intentionally challenging, refusing to follow basic story structure or often even give you fully developed characters, in favor of “ideas” represented by people.
Based on the amount of discourse I’m seeing, One Battle After Another might be his most *watched* film ever—and apparently, a whole lot of people’s first PTA film EVER.
Imagine if 1000s of general audience had blindly watched The Master. We’d be seeing—
I've been researching the fundamental differences between Western Horror and Japanese Horror, because I've always perceived that Japanese Horror always makes me feel uneasy. And even though I can handle scary movies, J-horror is at another level in on itself. Here's a rundown on the distinctive differences between both:
Roman Vishniac stamped our memories with his iconic images of Jewish life in pre-war Eastern Europe. Now, for the first time, Vishniac’s life and work will be explored in a feature-length documentary.

The film’s setting in 1926 compounds its unintentional Orientalist effect. Egypt had only recently gained independence from protectorate status under Britain in 1922, with several British-imposed conditions: “the security of imperial communications, defense of Egypt against aggression, protection of foreign interests and minorities, and continued British administration of the Sudan” (Botman 285)

I mean. Where have I been. It’s very, very good. And filming it at SEZ Berlin was a masterstroke.

No words can underestimate the controversy and impact of Ken Russell's THE DEVILS 1971
@warnerbros won't release the film anywhere in the world, not even in its butchered R-rated vers.
They are petrified of the impact it would cause. A masterpiece in every way!
'One Battle After Another': Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this action thriller : NPR
Paul Thomas Anderson's action thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio is a loose adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's Vineland. It weaves zany dark comedy, sociopolitical satire and controlled narrative chaos.
'Task' is a new, compelling crime drama from the creator of 'Mare of Easttown'
Mark Ruffalo stars as a former priest turned FBI agent in Brad Ingelsby's new HBO miniseries. Set in small-town Pennsylvania, Task is packed with action and conflict, but it also has a lot of heart.

It’s working on a completely different level than anything else on that list. The ambition, the execution, the emotional and psychological depth, it’s just not close.
There are great films on the New York Times list.

Rewatched Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy last night. That film, and Page Eight, are an absolute masterclass in intelligent espionage thrillers, in my view. What other films in that genre would the threadiverse recommend? I want more of the same!
