The Meaning of “Vision” and “Image” in the Age of AI - Feral File - Close-Ups
On the occasion of For Your Eyes Only, curator Domenico Quaranta discusses machine vision, operational images, and the future of human visual culture with Antonio Somaini, professor in film, media, and visual culture theory at the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3.
classroom exercise: introduction to machine learning
I’m teaching Machine Learning at Pratt Institute’s School of Information this semester (syllabus here). For the first day of class, I wanted to have a sort of physical or paper-based exercise that demonstrates the concept of machine learning to people totally new to the subject. I experienced this non-computer-based approach to introducing computation through Zach Lieberman’s coding class at the School for Poetic Computation, where we started off by playing the Human Fax Machine Experiment which revolves around the concepts of encoding and decoding. How does one apply this approach to machine learning? There are some very intuitive digital introductory material that illustrate neural networks or decision trees, but I wanted something more tangible.

2023 Design in Tech Report: Design and Artificial Intelligence
Key Thoughts Designers tend to care about people as people. Instead of just as prospects or customers. Design as a field has evolved to speak more machine, more scale, and more $$$s. A lot of work …
Participatory Design of AI Systems: Opportunities and Challenges Across Diverse Users, Relationships, and Application Domains | Extended Abstracts of the 2022 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems
I am a cognitive scientist researching human behaviour, social systems, and responsible and ethical Artificial Intelligence (AI). I recently finished my PhD, where I explored the challenges and pitfalls of automating human behaviour through critical examination of existing computational models and audits of large scale datasets. You can read my thesis here.
C/Change invites interdisciplinary teams and individuals around the globe to submit concepts for interactive prototypes that articulate a vision for the future of online cross-cultural exchange.
The School for Poetic Computation is an experimental school in New York City supporting interdisciplinary study in art, code, hardware and critical theory. It's a place for learning and unlearning.
The School of Machines, Making & Make-Believe is an organisation dedicated to the imaginative exploration of art, technology, design, and human connection. We develop unique programs to teach the latest technologies while simultaneously questioning their usage, the world around us, and ourselves
For years, Eye Filmmuseum’s Jan Bot has turned film fragments into digital experimental shorts. Now, with the project ending, those shorts will be archived via NFT.
