(Kitco News) – The United States Department of the Treasury is preparing to call for public comments related to digital assets based on a document that is set to be published in the Federal Register on Tuesday.
The document, entitled “Ensuring Responsible Development of Digital Assets,” requests that the public share their views on “digital-asset-related illicit finance and national security risks as well as the publicly released action plan to mitigate the risks” related to President Joe Biden’s executive order on crypto from March.
Included in the “request for comment” document are more than 20 questions asking the general public if the Treasury Department has “comprehensively defined the illicit financing risks” involved with crypto. It also lays the groundwork for various government offices to create a “coordinated action plan” to address the possible national security risks posed by digital assets.
“The growing use of digital assets in financial activity heightens risks of crimes such as money laundering, terrorist and proliferation financing, fraud and theft schemes, and corruption,” the notice said. “These illicit activities highlight the need for ongoing scrutiny of the use of digital assets, the extent to which technological innovation may impact such activities, and exploration of opportunities to mitigate these risks through regulation, supervision, public private engagement, oversight, and law enforcement.”
The notice referenced the six “principal policy objectives” laid out in U.S. President Joe Biden’s executive order on crypto, which include consumer protection, financial stability, mitigating illicit finance, promoting U.S. leadership in the global financial system, supporting affordable financial services and boosting responsible development of digital assets.
Some of the specific areas where the Treasury is looking for input include the potential steps it can take to better address ransomware attacks, illicit finance risks of cryptocurrency mixers and DeFi, illicit risks posed by nonfungible tokens, and how the government can better coordinate AML/CFT standards on a global scale.
The agency is also looking for input on which existing regulatory obligations are “no longer fit for purpose as it relates to digital assets,” and asked for suggestions as to what “alternative obligations should be imposed to effectively address illicit finance risks related to digital assets and vulnerabilities.”
On the topic of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), the Treasury department wants to know how it can “most effectively support the incorporation of AML/CFT controls into a potential U.S. CBDC design.”
According to Brian Nelson, Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, “without appropriate controls and enforcement of existing laws, digital assets can pose a significant risk to national security by facilitating illicit finance, such as money laundering, cybercrime and terrorist actions.”
“As we work to implement the Illicit Finance Action Plan, hold bad actors accountable and identify potential gaps in existing enforcement, we look forward to receiving the public’s input on this urgent work,” he said.
The public has until Nov. 3 to submit comments related to the notice.

Covid Will Be A Leading Cause Of Death Indefinitely In The U.S. NBC News
Covid Will Be A Leading Cause Of Death Indefinitely In The U.S. – NBC News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/covid-will-be-a-leading-cause-of-death-indefinitely-in-the-u-s-nbc-news/
After President Joe Biden said the coronavirus pandemic was “over” in an interview Sunday, many people were left wondering how to reconcile his comment with the fact that the U.S. is still averaging about 500 Covid deaths every day.
But disease experts said debating whether the pandemic is over overshadows a more important concern: the reality that Covid will remain a leading cause of death in the U.S. indefinitely.
“It’s likely, when we think of the causes of death in our society, that Covid’s on the list probably forever,” said Dr. Bob Wachter, the chair of the University of California, San Francisco’s department of medicine.
“Whether we call it a pandemic or not, it’s still an important threat to people,” he added.
Covid was the third-leading cause of death in the U.S. in 2020, after heart disease and cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The same was true last year, provisional CDC data shows. Since April, Covid deaths have stayed relatively flat, at a weekly average of around 300 to 500 per day. If the trend continues, the U.S. could expect 113,000 to 188,000 deaths a year from Covid, putting it on par with Alzheimer’s, chronic lower respiratory diseases and stroke.
Flu, by comparison, kills about 12,000 to 52,000 people annually. Flu and pneumonia combined were the ninth-leading cause of death in 2020; they fell out of the top 10 last year.
“As we’ve figured out how we’re going to live with this disease in perpetuity, it makes sense to contextualize it as another illness that Americans have to face,” said Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency physician and professor at George Washington University.
Experts said Covid is likely to remain among the U.S.’s 10 leading causes of death for the foreseeable future, regardless of new vaccines, boosters or treatments that might become available.
Predicting Covid’s future death toll
The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, or IHME, a research organization at the University of Washington that regularly models Covid deaths, predicts a decline in Covid deaths over the next two months.
So some experts are hopeful that Covid could drop in the U.S. cause-of-death rankings over time.
“It would not surprise me if we have a similar magnitude of deaths from Covid as we do from flu,” said Dr. Chris Murray, the director of the IHME.
Covid death numbers could also fall if hospitals stop routinely testing people for the virus. That’s because the current death counts may include some people who tested positive for Covid when they were hospitalized but died of other illnesses.
“Having filled out hundreds of death certificates in my life, I know that some of these deaths are ‘with’ rather than ‘from’ Covid,” Wachter said.
Murray estimated that half of annual Covid deaths may fall into that category.
The IHME model predicts a steeper drop in deaths this year if 80% of the public wears masks. Wachter said the country could also lower the death count to “half of what it is today” if more people took advantage of vaccines, boosters or treatments.
The White House coronavirus response coordinator, Dr. Ashish Jha, has said he thinks those measures could lead the number to drop further: “We now have all of the capability to prevent, I believe, essentially all of those deaths,” he said at a briefing this month.
But at this point, Murray said, “most people have moved on” in terms of their behavior.
But … is the pandemic over or not?
Many disease experts think it’s time, or almost time, to declare an end to the pandemic, given the widespread availability of Covid vaccines and treatments, the fact that no variant has overtaken omicron since December and the relatively stable U.S. case and death counts over the last few months.
“If you believe, as I do, that we have reached a new stage of stability, to continue to call it a pandemic purely for the purpose of trying to scare people into doing stuff doesn’t seem right to me,” Wachter said.
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus struck a similar chord last week, suggesting that the end of the pandemic was “in sight.”
White House officials, too, said this month that the new omicron-specific boosters marked a shift in the pandemic. Covid shots are likely to become annual affairs, with a schedule resembling that of flu shots, the officials said.
“They are feeling like we have to shift our mindset to the long game here,” Wachter said of the White House’s response. “This is no longer an acute threat in the same way it was.”
But other experts think the pandemic phase is very much ongoing.
“If we were to see the number of deaths from Covid down to what we see on an annual basis for flu — somewhere in the 20,000-a-year range — we’ll then say that the pandemic is clearly over,” said Dr. Eric Toner, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security at the Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Rachael Piltch-Loeb, a research associate at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, said that in declaring the pandemic over now, it “seems like we are endorsing this level of disease burden and mortality associated with the virus.”
And Dr. Kavita Patel, a primary care physician who was a policy adviser during the Obama administration, said the virus has to become more predictable before the pandemic can be considered over.
“We need to have some regular patterns, kind of like the flu, so that we can expect certain timing for sickness, certain timing for hospitalizations,” she said. Given that’s not the case, Patel said, she found Biden’s declaration “a bit disturbing to hear.”
After Biden’s comments, a White House official said that the president was speaking about the pandemic in a plain manner and that his remarks mirrored what many people think about Covid today.
Whether the remarks discourage people from getting the updated bivalent booster shots remains to be seen. Piltch-Loeb doesn’t expect Biden’s statement to change many minds.
“Folks who don’t want to get this booster already think that the pandemic is over,” she said.

MLB Power Rankings: The Nine Most Important Series Remaining In Final Weeks Of 2022 Regular Season – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/mlb-power-rankings-the-nine-most-important-series-remaining-in-final-weeks-of-2022-regular-season-cbs-sports/
Two-and-a-half weeks. That’s all we have left in the 2022 Major League Baseball season. It’s flown by, right?
Or has it? I’m convinced there’s a paradox in each baseball season for those of us who live and breathe with it on a daily basis.
On one hand, it’s easy to say something like “it seems like just yesterday it was Opening Day!” I don’t have a strong argument against it. I remember back in March when I was actually worried about the season being shortened, perhaps even drastically. It doesn’t seem all too long ago that a deal was finally struck and the owners ended their voluntary lockout of the players. We rejoiced.
Like I said, it doesn’t feel like that long ago.
Then again, remember debating whether or not Clayton Kershaw should have been removed from his perfect game after seven innings? Doesn’t that feel like ages ago? It really does for me. It feels like a looooooooong time ago. It was April 13. By the end of the World Series, the beginning of the season will have seemed exponentially further back.
It’s a grind that goes quickly and such a statement only makes sense to those of us still paying close attention. If you know, you know.
With the limited time left in the regular season, here are the nine best series with playoff implications for both sides. We’ll focus on the games where both teams are likely to have something to gain and something to lose, so you won’t find a team like the Dodgers or Astros listed. (The series are listed in chronological order.)

1. Mets at Brewers, Sept. 19-21 – Sweeping the doubleheader against the Giants on Sept. 8 seemed to get the Brewers back in their groove. They are now a serious threat to the Padres and Phillies for a wild-card spot. And the Mets, well, they are in a fight to the finish with the Braves. Big one here to start the week.
2. Blue Jays at Phillies, Sept. 20-22 – In all likelihood, both teams are safely in the tournament, but a collapse could doom either and there’s jockeying within the wild-card spots for seeding. The Jays could be looking upward, too, and we’ll get to that in a second.
3. Guardians at White Sox, Sept. 20-22 – The two teams only have three games remaining against one another. The White Sox desperately need to damage the Guardians before Cleveland finishes with a six-game series at home against the hapless Royals.
4. Braves at Phillies, Sept. 22-25 – It’s not head-to-head in the sense that they would be fighting for the same spot, but the Phillies could harm the Braves’ chances to take the NL East while the Braves could make the Phillies fall out of playoff position. Hurting a rival is always fun, right? And both need to keep winning in their own right.
5. Blue Jays at Rays, Sept. 22-25 – It’s a four-game series, so while it looks like both teams will safely grab wild-card spots, there’s always the chance a sweep here opens the door for the Orioles to climb back into the picture.
6. Yankees at Blue Jays, Sept. 26-28 – It could be over by the time this series is played. The Yankees might not be totally out of the woods, though. The lead right now is 5 1/2 games. If the Blue Jays can have it around four or five games and then sweep the Yankees, all of a sudden it’s a race to the finish.
Royals at Tigers, Sept. 27-29 – Just kidding. Two bad teams and I certainly wouldn’t expect Royals fans to ever pay attention unless their team is in the playoffs. Can’t stray from their brand.
7. Rays at Guardians, Sept. 27-29 – This is the last time the White Sox could get help — and they desperately need it — with the Guardians playing a worthy opponent. Also, the Rays could, possibly, be fighting for either a playoff spot or the AL East crown. At the very least, seeding will matter and it could lead to this being the exact same matchup in the wild-card round on a quick turnaround.
8. White Sox at Padres, Sept. 30-Oct. 2 – The White Sox could be eliminated by this series, but if they are breathing down the necks of the Guardians — or, somehow, leading the AL Central — this is a big one. The Padres could be dealing with the Brewers and/or Phillies for the final playoff spot, too. Maybe do-or-die games for both teams? That would be fun.
9. Mets at Braves, Sept. 30-Oct. 2 – Here we go. The best remaining series baseball has to offer. Assuming it stays this close (), it’ll be somewhat similar to a playoff series. Sure, the loser still makes the playoffs, but the stakes are high. Can we get greedy? Let’s get greedy. Please, Baseball Gods, let these two teams be tied heading into the series. We don’t ask you for much!
Obviously, these aren’t the only series worth watching and there are plenty of possible playoff previews (the Rays and Astros square off twice and the Dodgers play the Cardinals, for example).
The point is, while the grind is winding down and playoffs feel imminent, there are still plenty of regular-season series worth our attention.

From the 1884 Brooklyn Atlantics through the 2016 Los Angeles Dodgers, this franchise had seen six 100-win seasons. Since then, there have been four 100-win efforts out of five full seasons.
—
101-44
2
Astros
The Astros are very likely to join the Dodgers with four 100-win years out of the last five full seasons. This franchise previously had just *one*.
—
96-51
3
Braves
I have an NL Rookie of the Year vote this season and I’m having a blast tracking the top two. Looks like a fight to the finish.
—
91-55
4
Mets
It’s easy, and, yeah, obvious that the Mets should have to pay for getting swept at home by the Cubs in the midst of a furious divisional race. But the Braves barely even made them pay for it! The Mets really might’ve dodged a bullet there before getting right against the hapless Pirates.
—
93-55
5
Yankees
We’re officially in “watch every single Aaron Judge plate appearance” territory. I mean, you should have been doing it the last few weeks anyway, but now it’s as serious as it gets. Also, in addition to the homers, he’s now slugging .701. No one has slugged over .700 in a full season since Barry Bonds in 2004 (.812, which … lol).
1
88-58
6
Cardinals
There’s been so much focus on Albert Pujols’ pursuit of 700 homers and then this past week, rightfully, on Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina setting the MLB record for most games together by a battery that Paul Goldschmidt’s unreal season has been a bit on the backburner. The MVP frontrunner is still within striking range of the first NL Triple Crown since Hall of Famer Joe “Ducky” Medwick in 1937.
1
87-61
7
Blue Jays
Blowing that game Sunday did some serious damage to their chances at the AL East.
1
83-64
8
Rays
Great to see Shane McClanahan return, but even greater to see five scoreless innings against the Blue Jays.
1
82-64
9
Padres
It’s been six outings since Josh Hader’s last meltdown. He’s struck out seven in six innings with only one walk and three hits in that span. Juan Soto had two hits, including a home run, Sunday, too. Maybe things are trending the right way.
3
81-66
10
Guardians
They’ve won 11 of their last 14 and have effectively knocked the Twins back to where they shouldn’t matter. Can the Guardians finish?
1
80-67
11
Mariners
I didn’t even mention the Mariners in the intro, but it wasn’t an oversight. It’s because the rest of their schedule is pathetically weak (A’s, Royals, Rangers, A’s and Tigers). Should be smooth sailing. Then again, they just got swept by the Angels.
4
80-65
12
Phillies
That’s now four straight losses and they have to deal with the Blue Jays and Braves this coming week. They better stop messing around or they’ll be left out.
2
80-66
13
Brewers
They’ve won seven of their last 10. They do have series against the Cardinals and Mets remaining, but four against the Reds and Marlins each should bode well for their chances to keep pushing the Phillies and Padres.
—
78-68
14
Orioles
Of the top eight in bullpen ERA this season, the Orioles look like the only team that won’t make the playoffs. This was a group full of retreads or “never-will-bes” heading into the year. The closer was traded in late July. If this is a glimpse of how they’ll develop pitching, they could be scary good down the line.
1
76-69
15
White Sox
Feels like they probably need to sweep the Guardians, right? It’s the last head-to-head chance and you’d prefer needing minimal help from other teams.
1
76-71
16
Red Sox
Xander Bogaerts could be the one preventing Aaron Judge from winning the Triple Crown. I guess that’s what they have left to play for.
—
71-75
17
Twins
I did not include the Twins in the intro, as they are six games out. A win Monday gets it to five and the Twins do have six games left against the White Sox. They’ll need a lot of help, but they aren’t dead.
—
73-74
18
Giants
I realize that almost everything that could have possibly gone their way last season did, which is how they won a ridiculous 107 games. Still, to go from that to *this* means they should be prepared for a very aggressive offseason. They can start with an effort to bring Aaron Judge home.

Guy Who Invented The Word Metaverse Building His Own Metaverse Futurism
Guy Who Invented The Word “Metaverse” Building His Own Metaverse – Futurism https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/guy-who-invented-the-word-metaverse-building-his-own-metaverse-futurism/
The science fiction icon who coined and popularized the term “metaverse” is pausing his literary career to build his own.
As revealed by Wired, “Snow Crash” author and cyberpunk pioneer Neal Stephenson is working with a crypto bro to create an open metaverse platform that will, its creators hope, be a more decentralized version of the types of Big Tech metaverses like those run by Fortnite and Facebook.
“It’s like Neal is coming down out of the mountains like Gandalf, to restore the metaverse to an open, decentralized, and creative order,” said robotics and augmented reality entrepreneur Rony Abovitz, who is also acting as a strategic advisor to Lamina1, the company Stephenson is cofounding with Bitcoin Foundation head Peter Vessenes.
As Vessenes told Wired, he was initially concerned that the science fiction titan was “Kardashian-ing,” or profiting from his own self-created hype.
“That’s potentially the first question,” the career Bitcoin evangelist said. “Is Neal selling his brand out to some fucking metaverse company?”
Once people speak with the Lamina1 pair, Vessenes claimed, “they conclude this is a principled effort” and then begin asking how they plan to do it. The answer to that subsequent question, it seems, will be figured out along the way.
“The economics are tied to adoption,” Vessenes said, without adding much more detail. “The more people use it, the more valuable it is.”
Execution might be a sticking point. Back in 2021, Stephenson raised a half million dollars to create an incredibly ambitious swordfighting game called “Clang,” complete with its own new motion capture hardware, but the project disintegrated the next year without delivering anything.
Now, Stephenson and co are describing a much more ambitious project, similar to the unified internet. In other words, it sounds way more ambitious than “Clang.”
Resources could be thin as well. Wired reports that the company currently only employs three engineers, though they intend to hire many more as they build out their tech.
Adding to the stakes, Stephenson says he doesn’t intend to take much of a break from writing novels: the cyberpunk king said that “when the calendar turns over to 2023, it’s going to be back to the usual.”
“My publisher will send a hit man after me if I don’t fulfill my obligations,” he told Wired.

TrainND Northwest Helps First Student Fly Beyond Visual Line Of Sight – KFYR https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/trainnd-northwest-helps-first-student-fly-beyond-visual-line-of-sight-kfyr/
WILLISTON, N.D. (KUMV) – Anyone can fly a drone with a remote control and some education, but learning to fly beyond their line of sight takes some additional work. That’s what TrainND Northwest is teaching operators with their drone academy.
Tate Betts loves new technology, especially drones.
“I’ve always been interested in all the tech gadgets out there, but these are really cool because you get to fly,” said Betts.
He owns his own drones and has a part 107 license, but nothing compares to the Censys Senatero, a commercial drone he flies as a student at TrainND Northwest’s Ascent Unmanned Aeronautical Academy.
“Flying these big commercial, professional ones are a step beyond that. It’s awesome,” said Betts.
Betts is learning to fly the Senatero beyond visual line of sight, which will allow him to cover more distance commercially. As part of this four-week course, he charts a path through a computer, communicates with a grounds crew, and deals with real-life scenarios that will come up during his flights. Instructor Jim Ager says flying beyond visual line of sight allows limitless possibilities for drones, such as package delivery and pipeline inspection.
“Everybody is coming to the consensus that the technology exists today to be able to integrate unmanned aircraft safely into our airspace. It’s wide open right now and there’s several directions that this could go,” said Ager.
Betts’ last flight with the program was Friday, where he passed with flying colors. He says he plans on heading an oil and gas inspection operation for the company he works for.

Crypto News: Russia Looks To Crypto To Evade Sanctions – InvestorPlace https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/crypto-news-russia-looks-to-crypto-to-evade-sanctions-investorplace/

Crypto news is already hot this month. Ethereum (ETH-USD) and Cardano (ADA-USD) are bringing in massive new upgrades, Ripple is winding down its SEC lawsuit and Voyager Digital (OTCMKTS:VYGVQ) is finishing up its bankruptcy auction. Crypto is also a hot topic in the realm of international affairs. Indeed, in a move that adds to its policy flip-flop, Russia is planning to introduce a bill that would allow it to evade sanctions.
Russia has issued varying, contradicting opinions on crypto. It isn’t interested in a central bank digital currency (CBDC), nor does it want to allow Russian citizens to trade or transact with crypto assets. However, President Vladimir Putin has shown interest in mining crypto on an industrial scale.
This hodgepodge of stances have culminated in a hardline ban on crypto trading within Russia. Meanwhile, the country continues to embrace the crypto miners operating within its borders.
This all could be changing. When Russia first invaded Ukraine, many countries levied sanctions against it. Many feared early on that Russia would turn to crypto to evade these sanctions.
While others assert that this isn’t — and hasn’t — been the case, the Russian government could prove otherwise.
Crypto News: Russia to Entertain New Crypto Bill
The U.S. might be moving forward on its own crypto regulation this month, but the big crypto news of today lies elsewhere. Russia’s incoming crypto bill is a big deal, because it follows in the footsteps of another U.S. adversary and could help the nation evade sanctions over blockchain.
Russian Finance Ministry head Ivan Chebeskov says that the country is drafting a new bill to amend its previous ban on crypto trading. This new bill will give businesses the opportunity to conduct transactions using cryptocurrency.
The draft bill comes just weeks after the Russian central bank flipped its stance on crypto. Previously anti-crypto, the Bank of Russia came out in favor of legalizing crypto payments for cross-border transactions only. This recent change of heart follows Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin’s bullish comments on crypto. Just last week, Mishustin tasked the Bank of Russia, the Federal Security Service (FSB) and the country’s tax and financial monitoring branches to come to agreement over whether or not to legalize these cross-border payments.
All of this news comes, perhaps unsurprisingly, just after the Iranian government gave its own local businesses the legal right to import goods with crypto payments. It recently imported $10 million worth of vehicles into the country, the first such import order ever. These imports also mark a successful move to evade trade sanctions.
It seems that Russia has taken Iran’s success into account. Investors would be wise to keep an eye on the policy and legislation news coming out of the nation this week.

U.S. Arrests Along Mexico Border Surpass 2 Million In A Year For The First Time – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/u-s-arrests-along-mexico-border-surpass-2-million-in-a-year-for-the-first-time-the-washington-post/
U.S. authorities have made more than 2 million immigration arrests along the southern border during the past 11 months, marking the first time annual enforcement statistics have exceeded that threshold, according to figures provided by senior Biden administration officials Monday.
In August, U.S. Customs and Border Protection detained more than 203,000 migrants were detained crossing into the United States from Mexico, the latest figures show, putting authorities on pace to tally nearly 2.3 million arrests during the government’s 2022 fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30. The total, which includes some people arrested more than once, far exceeds last year’s record 1.73 million arrests.
This year’s historic migration wave has been driven by extra large numbers of border-crossers from outside Mexico and Central America, the two largest traditional sources of illegal entries. In recent months, soaring numbers of Venezuelan, Nicaraguan and Cuban asylum seekers have been taken into custody, crossing primarily through remote areas near Yuma, Arizona and the Del Rio, Texas.
“Failing communist regimes in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba are driving a new wave of migration across the Western Hemisphere, including the recent increase in encounters at the southwest U.S. border,” Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Chris Magnus, said in a statement.
The Republican governors of Texas and Arizona have sent more than 10,000 migrants on buses to Washington, New York City and other northern destinations to put pressure on Democrats by straining relief services in their jurisdictions. Last week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) shipped a planeload of Venezuelans to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.
M Corp Hires Veteran Technology Executive Bill Cody As Director Of Sales For Professional Services Business Wire
M Corp Hires Veteran Technology Executive Bill Cody As Director Of Sales For Professional Services – Business Wire https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/m-corp-hires-veteran-technology-executive-bill-cody-as-director-of-sales-for-professional-services-business-wire/
SACRAMENTO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–M Corp has hired veteran salesman Bill Cody to serve as Director of Sales for Professional Services. Cody has more than 30 years of experience in IT, representing major brands in hardware, software, services, security, and cloud.
“Bill has a proven track record of success. We are pleased for him to join our team as M Corp pushes the boundaries beyond risky, outdated models toward modern digital services,” said M Corp CEO Alex Castro. “By focusing on data-driven outcomes instead of code-heavy, legacy system upgrades, we are raising a paradigm that puts our clients on the precipice of greatness.”
With more than 30 years in executive roles in the technology industry, Cody has built sales teams and represented some of the world’s most recognizable brands, such as Symantec, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, ServiceNow, Splunk, VMWare, and Delphix. Much of his career has been focused on California State Government, where he worked on emerging and disrupting technologies and how to deliver better outcomes for the public sector.
“I look forward to working with the M Corp team to offer innovative products such as ReM Score and MissionNXT that will help our clients succeed and forever change how agencies approach complex digital service projects,” said Cody. “After spending the past five years delivering technology solutions to state governments in the Western US, I am elated to be back focusing on the State of California.”
As Director of Sales for the Professional Services Division, Cody will lead sales for new and existing clients of the firm’s consulting practice. Launched nearly 20 years ago, M Corp has earned respect in a highly competitive field among international firms. Senior Vice President Tom Larson leads the division with numerous longtime California state agency clients.
This spring, M Corp announced its growing team of 200+ associates has formally established a new division dedicated to transformative “as-a-service” products. The suite of solutions, including the company’s flagship readiness assessment product, ReM Score, is the result of the company’s 19 years of experience in the modernization industry, as well as research into what does– and does not– move organizations closer to achieving their mission and vision.
Recently launched, MissionNXT allows programs to deliver custom digital services to constituents without the headache of overseeing major projects, capturing and managing data, or worrying about going over budget. It’s a subscription-based service that frees program staff from the burdens of manual data collection and elevates them to focus on mission-based work.
M Corp contends that the industry is due for disruption, and a thoroughly modern approach is necessary to power clients’ modernization ambitions. And while the not-so-simple act of implementing a new system may look like progress from the outside, it often fails to move the needle on an organization’s strategic agenda and instead perpetuates the cycle of technical debt. With clarity of intention to discard this model, M Corp’s new approach changes everything.

Trip To Taiwan And South Korea Reveals Strength Of Arizona Brand – Chamber Business News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/trip-to-taiwan-and-south-korea-reveals-strength-of-arizona-brand-chamber-business-news/

My recent trip to Taiwan and South Korea as part of a delegation led by Gov. Doug Ducey was a chance to share with business and government leaders Arizona’s approach to business and why the state is such an attractive place for investment.
Our group, which also included Arizona Commerce Authority CEO Sandra Watson, didn’t have to do much selling, though. Arizona’s reputation as a welcoming, business-friendly state preceded us.
We heard it from executives with TSMC, the semiconductor manufacturer making a multi-billion-dollar investment in the Phoenix area for the company’s next fabrication plants. The company said its dealings in Arizona at all levels of government had been characterized by a desire to get things done and cut through red tape.
From both business and government, we heard about the tremendous opportunity presented by passage of the CHIPS and Science Act, bipartisan legislation that will help spur the production of semiconductors here in the U.S. and create new opportunities for investment from firms currently manufacturing almost exclusively in Asia. It’s good news for the diversification of the supply chain, as well as U.S. national security, ensuring that access to these essential component parts of our defense and aerospace technology isn’t dependent on one overseas source.
Words of praise were directed to Arizona’s two U.S. senators, Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly, for their work to get the bill passed, proving that the benefits of a functioning U.S. Congress aren’t appreciated just here at home.
Speaking of praiseworthy U.S. senators, at every stop, without fail, our Taiwanese and Korean hosts extended their thanks to the service of the late Sen. John McCain. No U.S. leader was more consequential and indispensable in the cause of freedom and solidarity with those striving to throw off the shackles of tyranny than Sen. McCain.
We got an up-close look at the power of his work and beliefs. Taipei is a bustling, modern metropolis. It celebrates innovation and free enterprise. But mainland China looms large, attempting to assert its position over Taiwan with regular military exercises and shows of force in the Taiwan Strait, which only increase in frequency when U.S. leaders like Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb, whose own delegations preceded ours, visit.
In South Korea, we got an object lesson in the power of markets over central planning and command and control. Anyone who’s looked at a satellite image of the Korean peninsula at night can see how the vibrant economic powerhouse that is South Korea outshines figuratively and literally its Hermit Kingdom neighbor to the north.
In a meeting with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, we were proud to extend our support to the people of Taiwan in their pursuit of democratic self-governance and to commit to strengthened Arizona-Taiwan ties, including the opening of an Arizona trade office in Taipei, which Gov. Ducey rightly called “a sure recipe for success.”
Arizona is also soon to open a trade office in Seoul. It’s another excellent opportunity not only to extend the Arizona brand, but to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with a democracy in a tumultuous region. We were heartened by the thanks extended by South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol to all the Arizonans who fought in the Korean War.
While the conversations were always warm and positive, leaders in both countries couldn’t ignore the threat of inflation – it’s a global phenomenon – and its effect on production costs as the price of inputs spike. Additionally, we heard concerns about the global talent pipeline and whether nations like the U.S., South Korea and Taiwan will have the people power necessary to keep these enterprises growing. The work of Arizona’s universities to produce graduates ready to compete in today’s economy was noted throughout the trip, including Arizona State University’s concentration on increasing the number of engineering graduates.
Trips abroad are always a valuable chance to learn something new, and this one was an eye-opener. But sometimes they also confirm or refute assumptions. In this case, the confirmations were good news. Arizona’s reputation as one of the country’s best places to build a business is causing the world to take notice, and the state’s pursuit of public policy that will lead to job growth is paying off in a major way.

Food Safety After A Wildfire Evacuation – YubaNet – YubaNet https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/food-safety-after-a-wildfire-evacuation-yubanet-yubanet/
Tens of thousands of people have been affected by the Mosquito Fire, with some families having been evacuated for nearly two weeks. With the extended loss of power, refrigerators and freezers are not able to keep food chilled to safe temperatures. This greatly increases the risk of foodborne illnesses, especially for vulnerable populations such as infants, toddlers, and the elderly. Perishable foods such as meat, eggs, and dairy should always be kept at or below 40°F and frozen foods at or below 0℉. As you return home, the following tips will help keep you safe from foodborne illnesses:
Never taste food to determine its safety! The appearance and odor of food will not determine if it’s safe to eat. Throw away any perishable foods such as meat, eggs, and dairy that have been kept at 41℉ or warmer for 2 hours or more!
Most perishable food will be spoiled! Canned and dry-goods may be still be safe, but all perishable food should be thrown out.
Dispose of spoiled food at a designated site! Placer County has organized a temporary Spoiled Food Collection Site at: 20895 Todd Valley Road, Foresthill, CA 9563. For more information: https://www.placer.ca.gov/8266/Returning-Home
Be mindful of drinking water safety! Foresthill Public Utilities has maintained operation of the public water system, but drinking water may appear cloudy or dirty-looking. If water is discolored, it’s recommended to run the taps until color returns to normal.
Disposing of perishable foods after an extended evacuation will prevent you and your family from being exposed to foodborne illnesses. Though it feels wasteful to throw out food, it’s important to follow safe food handling practices. Title IX 50 Years Later: The 37 Words That Changed Our Sports World Mississippi Today
Title IX, 50 Years Later: The 37 Words That Changed Our Sports World – Mississippi Today https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/title-ix-50-years-later-the-37-words-that-changed-our-sports-world-mississippi-today/
Let’s go back 50 years to 1972. Title IX has just weeks earlier become the law of the land. To paraphrase Bob Dylan: The times, they were a-changin’.
I was a young sports writer at the Hattiesburg American, working my way through college. My editor told me to go report on a seminar at the university. The federal government – the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW), specifically – was sending a representative to explain the ramifications of Title IX. I went.
Rick Cleveland
But first I had to look up the Title IX legislation. It was all of 37 words: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
I didn’t see the words “sports” or “athletics” in the wording anywhere. I wasn’t sure why I was being sent to cover it. The answer came quickly.
The woman from HEW didn’t mince words. She said all public schools – elementary schools through universities that received federal funding – would have to spend money equally on boys and girls and men and women – in athletics, as in every other aspect of education. And, if they didn’t, they would lose all federal monies.
Hands shot up. People had questions. One of the first: How are universities such as USM, Mississippi State and Ole Miss, already struggling to make ends meet, supposed to double their spending on scholarships, salaries, expenses, etc. within their athletic programs?
Her answer: That wasn’t the government’s concern. They’d do it or else.
At that point, I muttered something to the effect: “That’s insane. It’ll never fly. It’s not fair.”
The man next to me, a professor in the health and physical education department, looked at me and replied, “Obviously, you’ve never had a daughter.” He had three. One became the point guard on the first Hattiesburg High basketball team.
Fifty years, a son and a daughter later, I get it.
Last week, the Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics at Ole Miss celebrated 50 years of Title IX with a panel discussion that featured Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter, women’s basketball coach Yolette McPhee-McCuinn (better known as Coach Yo) and Rita Igbokwe, a senior player on the Ole Miss women’s basketball team. I moderated. You can find it here.
If the discussion did nothing else, it surely highlighted the remarkable change in the American sports scene those 37 words have spurred. I’ve lived it. I’ve covered it.
In 1972, no co-ed Mississippi college or university had a single women’s athletic team. Since then, Delta State has won six national women’s basketball championships. Ole Miss has won a national championship in golf. Mississippi State has made it the NCAA women’s basketball championship twice. Southern Miss made the women’s College World Series in softball. In track and field, USM’s Tori Bowie of Pisgah won NCAA championships in track and field and later an Olympic gold medal and three world championships. Last season, Coach Yo’s Ole Miss team won 23 games and made the NCAA Tournament.
More importantly, over the last 50 years, thousands upon thousands of young women have competed in multiple sports and had their educations financed as was never the case before.
In more than half a century of covering Mississippi sports, the two most meaningful transformations I have witnessed: One, the widespread racial integration of sports at all levels; two, the meteoric rise of women’s athletics.
Fifty years ago, I think I would have predicted what has happened as far as integration. As for what has happened with regard to women’s athletics, I had not a clue.
Thirty-seven words. Amazing.
We want to hear from you!

The EU Commission wants to ensure a safe and fair metaverse. Concrete legislative proposals will follow in 2023.
Last week, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presented the priorities for 2023. The letter of intent also announced an “initiative on virtual worlds, such as the metaverse.”
EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton got a bit more specific in a blog post titled: “People, technologies and infrastructure – Europe’s plan to thrive in the metaverse.”
In it, Breton points out that the EU Commission is not done regulating digital markets and, after passing the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and Digital Services Act (DSA), plans to target the metaverse next.
EU Commission: for security, against monopolies
“We have also learned a lesson from this work: We will not witness a new Wild West or new private monopolies,” Breton writes.
The metaverse creates new public spaces ideally designed according to European values and in which people feel as safe as they do in reality.
“Private metaverses should develop based on interoperable standards and no single private player should hold the key to the public square or set it terms and conditions,” Breton adds. For them to flourish, he said, they must adhere to interoperability standards and be competitive. “Innovators and technologies should be allowed to thrive unhindered.”
Tech firms to help fund EU networks
In the second section, which deals with technology measures, Breton hints at financial support for European companies and introduces a VR and AR industry coalition involving over 40 EU organizations.

Last but not least, Breton touches on the metaverse infrastructure. The outlined plan is to support the expansion of European networks through a metaverse tax paid by digital world providers.
“The current economic climate sees stagnating rewards for investment and decreesing deployment costsfor pure connectivity infrastructure,” Breton said. “In Europe, all market players benefiting from the digital transformation should make a fair and proportionate contribution to public goods, services and infrastructure that benefits all Europeans.”
Calls for metaverse regulation too early?
The goals and intentions sound sensible. The question will be how to implement them in concrete terms. Forcing companies into an overly tight legal corset could inhibit innovation rather than encourage it.
One example is interoperability standards, on which there is currently no consensus. The industry has only just begun to negotiate standards. This work will take years and it is unsure whether it will be productive. Whether and how the EU Commission can meaningfully contribute to this process is unclear.
The metaverse is in its infancy. Putting a stop to investors and innovators like Meta now could hinder or delay the development of the metaverse.

RICK AND MORTY Recap: (S06E03) Bethic Twinstinct – Geek Girl Authority https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/rick-and-morty-recap-s06e03-bethic-twinstinct-geek-girl-authority/
DISCLAIMER: This recap of the Rick and Morty episode “Bethic Twinstinct” has spoilers. Prepare for Smith family drama, and proceed at your peril.
Wubba lubba dub-dub! “Bethic Twinstinct,” a play on Basic Instinct, brings Rick and Morty home for a hot minute. We seldom get slower, more character-driven outings amid all the space shenanigans, so this episode is a nice palate cleanser. Well, in that respect. Beth having sex with herself might be incestuous? Or does it count if one of them is a clone and not technically related? Regardless, it’s one giant metaphor for self-love in its Rick and Morty way, so that’s cool.
Ready to delve into “Bethic Twinstinct”? Let’s get to it.

A Tale of Two Beths
We open with Morty (Justin Roiland) trying out a new video game console while Rick (also Roiland) slams into the sliding glass door as a turkey. He resumes human form instantly before entering the house in his birthday suit. It’s Thanksgiving, and the Smith/Sanchez clan is having dinner together. Rick and Morty join Summer (Spencer Grammer), Beth (Sarah Chalke), Space Beth (also Chalke) and Jerry (Chris Parnell) for the festivities.
Jerry delivers a toast, putting inexplicable emphasis on the fact that should he lose Beth in any way, he would end his life. His family chalks it up to Jerry being Jerry.
Later, Beth and Space Beth chat in the kitchen. There are definite sparks between the two Beths. Beth apologizes for Jerry’s eccentricities, while Space Beth unveils a bottle of special Venusian wine to drink with her clone. Space Beth inserts a chip into Beth’s neck, allowing her to speak French fluently. It’s getting hot and heavy in here, folks.

Meanwhile, Rick, Morty and Summer play a less than enthralling video game. Outside, Beth gives Space Beth a massage, and just as they’re about to kiss, they hear a noise. Inside, Summer inadvertently observes the scene unfolding between her two moms.
RICK AND MORTY — Season 6 Episode 3, “Bethic Twinstinct.”
Then, Morty watches Rick and Summer play a Street Fighter knockoff game, Gettin’ to a Street Fight. It’s all the mundane stuff leading to the street fight! Rick’s character is named Kickpuncher, a reference to a film franchise Abed Nadir and Troy Barnes love on Community. Considering Dan Harmon‘s involvement in this show, the nod is no surprise.
Jerry brings out a horse-themed jigsaw puzzle to assemble by himself, which is sad.

The two Beths reveal they’re traveling to the Gloppy Drop system for some ice cream and ask their family if they’d like some. Obviously, this is code for “we’re gonna do it in space,” and Summer and Rick pick up on it. Sure enough, Space Beth and Beth get it on, and when they arrive home, they realize they forgot the ice cream. That’s when Morty spies the Beths making out in SB’s spaceship.
Bionic Space Whales and Gloppy Drop Ice Cream
While Summer and Morty process what they bore witness to, Beth approaches her father for advice. Rick constructs a controller from a bionic whale. He and Beth speak in veiled terms regarding Beth’s affair with, erm, herself. Rick seems to give it the green light. Hey, Rick has definitely fooled around with himself. All those Ricks out there in the multiverse? Before Beth departs, Rick gives her a container of Gloppy Drop ice cream from his freezer.
Later, Beth and Space Beth make snow angels and kiss on the roof. Noting the two Beths’ absence, Jerry asks his kids where they are. Morty and Summer distract Jerry with a new video game about having an affair, which feels too on the nose, kids.

San Junipero
Next, Rick, Morty and Summer find the two Beths in Rick’s Holodeck. Rick accuses the pair of doing a “San Junipero” (a name of a Black Mirror episode). Morty and Summer believe Jerry should know the truth, but Space Beth tells everyone to fork off.
Everyone enjoys some Gloppy Drop ice cream at the dinner table. The kids inhale it, much to Jerry’s annoyance. Space Beth nonchalantly discloses her affair with Beth, culminating in Jerry retreating into a shell like a bug. Jerry having a bug shell feels on brand for him. It’s something Rick forgot he installed.
RICK AND MORTY — Season 6 Episode 3, “Bethic Twinstinct.”
Rick informs his family that this was at Jerry’s behest, and only he can “unroll” when he chooses. So, Rick Morty and Summy return to their new game console while the two Beths have a heart-to-heart. Beth loves her husband as much as she loves Space Beth. However, it might be time to part ways.

Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort (Episode Callback!)
Thus, the Beths ask Rick to erase their memories of each other. It’s all Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind up in here. Jerry finally unrolls, urging the Beths not to go through with this. He commences packing his belongings, claiming now Beth can marry Space Beth. However, the two Beths prevent him from leaving, and the trio partakes in a questionable threesome, much to Morty and Summer’s dismay. There’s lots of crying at the dinner table as they overhear everything. I predict a lengthy therapy session is on their horizon.
Later, Space Beth departs, and it seems all is right between Beth and Jerry. Well, maybe. Perhaps Beth will still pine for good ole SB, a.k.a. herself. Rick ventures into the kitchen, unlocking an invisible cabinet filled with liquor and wine from other worlds. He picks up the bottle of Venusian wine Beth and Space Beth consumed, puts it back in the cupboard and destroys the gadget utilized to access said cabinet. Hm. Something tells me the wine made them fall in love.
RICK AND MORTY — This photo isn’t from the episode, but isn’t it pretty? Could you imagine if the episode was 22 minutes of Rick sitting in a serene field?
Jerrysic Twinstinct?
In the end-credit scene, Jerry travels to the Jerryboree to visit the abandoned Jerrys therein. However, the woman at the desk refuses to let him see them because, without supervision from a Rick and Morty, the Jerrys tend to get handsy with each other. Dejected, Jerry seeks solace from another Jerry in an alleyway. They give each other a quick peck on the lips, and that’s that. Jerry’s had his fill of himself.
RELATED: Get schwifty with the rest of our Rick and Morty recaps, broh.
“Bethic Twinstinct” is all about the Smith/Sanchez family drama. It’s lighthearted, fun and brimming with pop culture references. It’s proof Rick and Morty doesn’t have to be an incessant mishmash of action sequences and plot-heavy narratives (not that I don’t enjoy those).
Will we see Space Beth again? I hope so. Maybe Beth will run off with herself, and they’ll San Junipero it. It’s not narcissistic to love yourself. That’s called self-love, baby!

By the end of last week, the federal agencies presented the results of their six-month-long work on the principal directions for digital assets regulation in the United States. The resulting first-ever crypto framework, published on the White House website, may not contain many surprises or exact details, but, as a part of President Joe Biden’s executive order, it will undoubtedly affect the policymaking decisions to come.
Perhaps the most important section of the framework is dedicated to central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). It revealed that the administration has already developed policy objectives for a U.S. CBDC system, but further research on the possible technological foundation of that system is needed. Still, the intent seems pretty serious as the Treasury will lead an interagency working group with the participation of the Federal Reserve, the National Economic Council, the National Security Council and the Office of Science and Technology Policy.
The industry didn’t take the document well, as the policymakers’ focus on security and enforcement is all too visible. Kristin Smith, executive director of the U.S.-based Blockchain Association, called it “a missed opportunity to cement U.S. crypto leadership,” highlighting its heavy emphasis on risks, not opportunities, and the lack of substantive recommendations on the promotion of the crypto industry. Speaking to Cointelegraph, Sheila Warren of the Crypto Council for Innovation said the policy recommendations seemed to be based on an “outdated and unbalanced understanding” of crypto, which could leave the details to be determined by other lawmakers or the next administration.
The Merge and its regulatory repercussions
Ethereum’s upgrade to proof-of-stake (PoS) may have placed the cryptocurrency back in the crosshairs of the Securities and Exchange Commission. SEC chairman Gary Gensler reportedly said that cryptocurrencies and intermediaries that allow holders to “stake” their crypto may define it as a security under the Howey test. Gensler went on to say that intermediaries offering staking services to their customers “looks very similar — with some changes of labeling — to lending.” The SEC has previously said they didn’t see Ether (ETH) as a security, with both the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and the SEC agreeing that it acted more like a commodity.

18 potential design forms for the American CBDC
The Office of Science and Technology Policy submitted a report analyzing the design choices for 18 central bank digital currency systems for possible implementation in the U.S. The technical analysis of the 18 CBDC design choices was made across six broad categories: participants, governance, security, transactions, data and adjustments. Helping policymakers decide on the ideal US CBDC system, the OSTP report highlighted the implications of including third parties in the two design choices under the “participants” category — transport layer and interoperability. For governance, the report weighed various factors related to permissions, access tiering, identity privacy and remediation.

Thailand prepares to ban crypto lending
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Thailand is preparing to take radical measures in the aftermath of crypto lending platforms’ crashes experienced in Summer 2022. The Thai SEC plans to prohibit crypto platforms from providing or supporting digital asset depository services. The planned ban includes several principal points. It will prohibit operators from taking a deposit of digital assets with a promise to pay returns to depositors — even if the returns come not from the growing value of the assets but from the promotion budget. The advertising of lending and depositary services would also be banned.

Sept 19 (Reuters) – Book bans accelerated across the United States during the 2021-2022 school year, largely because of advocacy groups that called on public schools to remove more than 1,600 titles, the writers’ group PEN America said on Monday.
There were 2,532 separate book bans affecting 1,648 titles at 5,000 schools with 4 million students, according to the report. The research found 1,000 more book bans than were documented in the group’s initial April report.
PEN America said the rapid rise came as a growing number of groups have targeted books largely dealing with race or LGBTQ issues. The report identified at least 50 groups pushing for book bans, the vast majority of which have formed since 2021.

The advocacy is intertwined with political movements that grew out of the COVID-19 pandemic, the report said, including fights over mask mandates, virtual school and the teaching of what critics consider to be divisive concepts about race.
“This rapidly accelerating movement has resulted in more and more students losing access to literature that equips them to meet the challenges and complexities of democratic citizenship,” said Jonathan Friedman, lead author of the report.
While proponents of book bans emphasize the importance of parental control, PEN America said the movement has gone beyond the normal give-and-take between parents and educators and morphed into a sophisticated and well-resourced campaign.
Sheri Few, a founder of United States Parents Involved In Education, disputed that characterization, saying her group, which has 20 chapters across the country, is a grass-roots effort run mostly by volunteers.
Few, who is based in South Carolina, said the books her organization opposed contain what members view as inappropriate content for children. She also objects to books that she asserts paint white people broadly as oppressors, with other racial and ethnic groups depicted as victims.
“It’s not the concern that parents are expressing over the content of these books that is causing schools to become a battleground – it’s the very content they are pushing on children that has caused the schools to become a battleground,” Few said in an interview.
More than 40% of the banned titles address lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer themes or have prominent queer characters, according to PEN America. The most frequently banned book was “Gender Queer: A Memoir” by Maia Kobabe, which was banned by 41 school districts.
Race also drew the attention of censors, with 40% of the banned titles featuring prominent characters of color. The most banned authors include the late Nobel laureate Toni Morrison, whose works largely deal with race, and other winners of prestigious literary awards.
Other banned books touched on sexual content, rights and activism, or stories with religious minorities.
Texas accounted for the most bans, with 801 in 22 districts, followed by Florida and Pennsylvania.

Veterinary Giants Tap Artificial Intelligence To Read X-Rays – VIN News Service https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/veterinary-giants-tap-artificial-intelligence-to-read-x-rays-vin-news-service/

Artificial intelligence increasingly is helping veterinary professionals interpret radiographs, whether they are taken in specialty, emergency or general practice.
The world’s two biggest owners of veterinary hospitals have started using artificial intelligence to read radiographs, indicating that adoption of the novel technology is approaching a turning point. That doesn’t necessarily mean radiologists will be out of work. The companies predict that AI is more likely to help them do their jobs than replace them, at least in the foreseeable future.
Mars Inc., which owns more than 2,500 veterinary practices worldwide, is employing AI to interpret radiographs at about 60 practices as part of a trial exercise, executives at its Antech veterinary diagnostics division told the VIN News Service. The McLean, Virginia-based group’s AI was developed in-house by Antech and is being trialed at practices in Europe, including the United Kingdom, and in North America. Dates for a broader company-wide rollout have yet to be decided.
Bristol, England-based IVC Evidensia, meanwhile, which owns more than 2,300 practices in Europe and Canada, has progressed further: It has finished trialing an AI product developed by the American company SignalPET. The product already is present in dozens of IVC Evidensia’s Canadian practices, and a U.K.-wide rollout is expected to be completed in about 12 months, closely followed by mainland Europe.
The software tools employ AI to read radiographs, commonly known as X-rays, and provide an interpretation within minutes. Users access the software by signing into a website, and can pay as little as US$10 per interpretation. Other companies offering the technology to veterinarians include Vetology and MetronMind, both based in California.
AI is used to interpret radiographs in human medicine, too, though mostly in academic settings due to higher regulatory hurdles than for veterinary medicine and pushback from some radiologists who fear the technology may not be ready for clinical use. At least one product has been released for autonomous use in humans: In March, an AI tool for reading chest X-rays was approved by European regulators.
Adoption appears to be occurring more rapidly in the veterinary domain for now. That rise has been stoked by a shortage of veterinary radiology specialists, particularly in academia, that has been recognized by professional associations including the American College of Veterinary Radiology.
AI tools are developed with a technique known as deep learning, which in the case of radiology, trains them to identify abnormalities that may indicate disease. Training involves feeding the AI a multitude of radiographic images. The process is refined through reviews by radiologists and user feedback.
Mars said it drew on the knowledge of Antech’s 123 radiologists to develop AI trained with a vast trove of images stored by VCA, the U.S. veterinary business it acquired in 2017.
“VCA data has been stored for almost 20 years, and we have in the order of 11 million or 12 million slides that we’ve trained the AI with,” said Paul Fisher, senior vice president at Antech Imaging Services.
Fisher sees the technology as more of a friend to radiologists than a rival, at least in the near-term. “I think it’ll make them more efficient with assisted reads but I can’t really see — certainly for a number of years — that it would replace a radiologist.”
The adoption of AI technology might even create more demand for oversight by human beings with specialist radiology training, according to Dr. Alistair Cliff, deputy chief medical officer at IVC Evidensia.
“I’m very clear on this: I think that veterinary radiologists should be excited by this product,” Cliff said. “They should be excited because what we are essentially doing is sparking a conversation about radiology in a far, far bigger group of animals than we currently do.”
Academic research and anecdotal evidence indicate that veterinarians typically submit X-rays for a radiologist’s opinion in about 5% to 10% of cases, perhaps fewer, Cliff said. AI technology, by offering general practitioners a cheap, fast analytical tool, could introduce more pet owners to radiology, he contends, potentially prompting some to seek out specialists to evaluate initial AI-based findings. “We see this being something that will do nothing but support the radiologist community and, dare I say, shine a light on them.”
The question of accuracy
Before commencing its rollout, IVC Evidensia trialed the SignalPET product at 22 practices in the U.K. for up to 12 weeks, during which time it measured a number of performance factors including the accuracy of the tool, its impact on clinical care, and how satisfied veterinarians and pet owners were with its performance. IVC Evidensia’s analysis indicated 95% accuracy — based on recognizing what is normal or abnormal in a radiograph — which happens to match the accuracy level claimed by product developer SignalPET.
As for the impact on clinical care, Cliff said use of the product at trial practices triggered an increase in the use of other diagnostic equipment, such as endoscopy and ultrasound. Pets ultimately spent less time in hospital, and repeat visits fell, indicating the AI prompted more targeted care, resulting in better clinical outcomes. Veterinarians were apparently impressed: 95% of the practitioners at the 22 trial practices said they approved of the product, while the remaining 5% said they hadn’t used it long enough to be sure, Cliff said.
Users of AI radiology tools contacted last year by VIN News offered more mixed evaluations of their capabilities, ranging from enthusiastic praise to questioning their accuracy or applicability to certain conditions. Happy customers recounted occasions on which the software picked up incidental conditions that might otherwise have been overlooked. Others said the products were especially helpful for junior colleagues as a learning tool. Detractors, however, claimed the AI had produced readings that weren’t specific enough or had identified lesions that didn’t exist.
Manufacturers maintain that their accuracy claims are supported by academic research. In one of the more recent papers, published in January in Veterinary Radiology & Ultrasound, the journal of the AVCR, researchers at Tufts University assessed the accuracy of Vetology’s product in 41 dogs with confirmed pleural effusion (a buildup of excess fluid around the lungs). They found the technology had an accuracy rate of 88.7%, and concluded that the technology “appears to be of value and warrants further investigation and testing.”
Product developers acknowledge their offerings aren’t perfect, though they stress that the quality of radiographs being shown to their AI in general-practice settings might not always be as high as the quality of radiographs presented by specialists or by academics conducting research. “Interpretations are only as good as what’s offered to the AI to analyze,” said Eric Goldman, Vetology’s president.
Goldman said the quality of images uploaded to AI software by veterinary professionals will depend on various factors, such as positioning of the patient, lighting levels and the presence or absence of impediments.
“The other thing that I would say is that software doesn’t know that an animal is vomiting, an animal has diarrhea, an animal is coughing,” he said. “Software can look at a well-positioned, well-taken radiograph and tell whether it’s a heart or lung issue, but it has to match the clinical signs and it has to match the DVM’s training and experience. That’s why, all things considered, we believe humans and AI go better together.”
To that end, Vetology has developed a version of its AI tool that is tailored to radiologists, by using technical language and concepts to which they are more familiar. It currently is being used by radiologists at the company’s tele-radiology business to perform preliminary assessments. “We wan’t to be inclusive with the technology and we want radiologists to be a part of it,” Goldman said.
Mars executives note that the process used to develop AI tools isn’t perfect, either. “It’s trained by human beings, who can make mistakes,” Antech’s Fisher said. “So that’s why we use a group of radiologists to train it every single day — though as everyone probably knows, radiologists don’t always agree with each other.”
Diane Wilson, director of scientific and academic affairs at Antech Imaging Service, notes that with 20 years’ worth of VCA data, its AI can encounter a lot of inconsistency and still produce accurate readings. She added: “I think one of the biggest limitations is education of the end user. This is not a mechanical radiologist. It’s a machine that conducts a diagnostic test. It’s important that veterinarians who might use it understand what it can and can’t do.”
Similarly, IVC Evidensia’s Cliff recommends veterinarians view AI radiology tools more as an assistant than an authority. “It forms part of the jigsaw puzzle that is a diagnosis,” he said. “It’s not a diagnosis in itself.”
How sophisticated and autonomous AI products become remains an open question, not just in veterinary and human medicine, but in industries ranging from retailing to the arts.
Dr. Debra Baird, a veterinary radiologist based in Indiana and diagnostic imaging consultant at the Veterinary Information Network, an online community for the profession, doubts that AI will ever put people like her out of the job. “Listing radiographic findings or detecting abnormalities is one thing,” she said, “but interpreting the findings and the importance of them is where I think AI will not be able to replace the human mind.”

The Complete Post Guide To Fort Lewis Washington We Are The Mighty
The Complete Post Guide To Fort Lewis Washington – We Are The Mighty https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-complete-post-guide-to-fort-lewis-washington-we-are-the-mighty/
Does life in the Army ever get better than a posting to Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM)? OCONUS installations aside, this might be one of the most breathtakingly stunning places to call home. The Pacific Northwest region of our country is home to pristine nature, amazing outdoor adventures, and some of the freshest food around. But that’s not all. When you live in Washington state, you’ll be positioned well to have so many exciting adventures. From day trips to Mt. Rainier to longer driving the west coast, your time at Fort Lewis is going to be spectacular. Read on to find out more about this amazing Washington Army base.
Overview
Joint Base Lewis McChord is a premier installation in the Pacific Northwest. It provides world-class installation support to more than 40,000 service members and around 15,000 civilian workers. This base incorporates Fort Lewis, McChord Field, and Camp Murray.
As far as Ft. Lewis weather is concerned, it honestly doesn’t rain all the time. However most of what you’ve heard about the gray skies is true. Spring is the rainy season but the weather starts to look up around the end of June. Perfect for a Fourth of July cookout! But don’t expect too much warmth. Highs are only ever in the upper 70s. More rain comes in autumn and winter is pretty chilly. The area does get some snow but it’s not that significant.
Ft. Lewis Washington Location
JBLM includes four areas: Lewis Main, Lewis North, McChord Field, and Yakima Training Center. There are nearly 400,000 acres of land across the installation.
Ground breaking for the children’s splash park on June 24, 2009 at Fort Lewis, Washington.
Directions
Ft. Lewis is just about 45 miles south of Seattle, Washington. If you’re driving, you’ll have no trouble spotting the massive installation. Interstate 5 splits it in half. Exit 120 takes you right to the main gate.
Driving Directions from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
Follow the signs to access I-5 and head south going toward Tacoma. Then, stay on I-5 until you reach Exit 125 for McChord Field and Bridgeport Way. Follow signs to enter Ft. Lewis.
If you’re driving a rental, you’ll need a temporary pass for the vehicle. You can get one at the Visitor’s Center.
Transportation
You can arrive to Ft. Lewis by plane, train, or automobile!
The closest train station is in Tacoma. That’s about 10 miles from the installation.
If you choose to fly, you’ll land at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. What’s super exciting about that is there’s a shuttle service available from the airport directly to Waller Hall Welcome Center! There are also plenty of car rental agencies if you want to drive yourself.
Gates and Hours
As you might expect given its size, JBLM has a lot of gates. In fact, there are 15 established entry points onto the installation. Currently three are closed until further notice.

Mission and Units
JBLM’s mission is to provide state of the art training and infrastructure for all branches of the military.
The installation is home to both the 62nd Airlift Wing and the First Corps. The First Corps’ mission is to “deploy, fight, and win” in any environment. This is achieved by driving deployment readiness and shaping the battlefield. Subordinate commands of the First Corps include the 7th Infantry Division, the 25th Infantry Division (Schofield Barracks, HI) and U.S. Army Alaska.
The 62nd Airlift Wing, along with the 446th Airlift Wing fly 40 C-17 Globemaster IIIs to provide combat airlift support. Additionally, the installation is home to the Western Air Defense Sector, an Air National Guard unit; the 22nd Special Tactics Squadron and the 361st Recruiting Squadron.
The 7th Infantry Division, 1st Special Forces Group, 2nd Battalion and the 75th Ranger Regiment are also on post. Additionally, there are several other tenant commands. Speaking of the 75th Ranger Regiment, here’s everything you need to know about Army Rangers. In 2014, the 2nd Infantry Division Artillery was stood up at JBLM.

Ft. Lewis Washington History
Ft. Lewis is named for the famous Lewis and Clark expedition that helped map America. Back in 1917, the War Department established Camp Lewis on 70,000 acres of land donated by the state of Washington. The 91st Wild West Division trained at Camp Lewis until it departed for France in 1918.
Then in 1947, McChord Air Force Base was established. That’s the same year the Air Force became its own branch of the military!
In 2010, the two installations merged in response to the Base Realignment Closure Commission (BRAC). Now, it’s the largest Army-led joint base in America.
Things to Do Around Ft. Lewis Washington
Ft. Lewis Washington is surrounded by pristine nature and plenty of outdoor activities. The Puget Sound offers year-round boating, fishing, whale watching, and scuba diving. Take a 90-minute scenic drive to the majestic Cascade Mountains, or visit the region’s most recognizable landmark, Mt. Rainier. For more adventures, head two hours south to Portland, Oregon, or fly a kite at family-friendly Ocean Shores, where you can drive your vehicle directly onto the beach.

Food Scene
Foodies and non-foodies alike are going to love living in the Pacific Northwest. Nearby Spokane has a thriving food scene that features food from everywhere around the world. Of course since it’s Washington, there are tons of great coffee shops all around. Don’t skimp on the luxury of a long brunch. You’ll thank yourself for it later. Since you’re in the Evergreen State, you won’t want to miss out on fresh seafood including salmon and crab. Be sure to try a razor clam. It’s native only to the upper Pacific Coast, so you won’t find it anywhere else. Be sure to sample the state’s famous cherries and apples, too!

Activities
Because it’s a joint Army-Air Force post, you can take advantage of Space A travel departures and arrivals from base. Check the current schedule to plan your next adventure!
As you might expect, outdoor recreation options are unlimited in the PNW. In fact, on clear days, you’ll be able to see Mt. Rainier from post! If that doesn’t get you excited about hiking, probably nothing will.

The owners of a Long Island marketing firm have purchased The Hydrant Hotel, a pet boarding and grooming business in Riverhead.
Eva LaMere and Rick Chiorando, who own the Austin Williams agency in Hauppauge, acquired the facility that has provided boarding and grooming services for dogs and cats since it was opened by Anthony and Rebecca Pollina in 2015.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Hydrant Hotel is located in a 10,000-square-foot building at 845 Raynor Ave. and also offers an outdoor agility course and 1 acre area where dogs can play and exercise.
“This is a true passion project for us, because we just love our pets, specifically our dogs,” LaMere, a resident of Southampton, said in a written statement. “We have rescued our dogs Dixie Doodle and Monty and fostered even more. We felt this was a calling for us to revitalize a business that serves such an important need for pet owners and their four-legged children.”
LaMere also serves as vice president on the board of Canine Companions Inc., a national nonprofit service dog organization based in Medford, which provides service dogs to adults, children and veterans with disabilities and facility dogs to professionals working in healthcare, criminal justice, and educational settings.
The day-to-day operations of The Hydrant Hotel will continue to be run by Kerri Ficke and Jessy San Filippo, who are remaining on staff.
“Kerri and Jessy are essential to making sure pets get the exceptional level of care they deserve and putting their owners’ minds at ease when they leave them with us,” Chiorando said in the statement. “We plan to give them even more resources and expand the services and amenities for the dogs and cats that think of this as their second home.”
The new owners of the facility also plan on giving it a new look, tapping into their day jobs as marketers and advertisers.
“We have big plans for the interior design of the facility and will be revamping the website to add new features and functionality,” LaMere said. “We want the Hydrant brand to be known as the premier pet boarding facility on the East End.”

Manipur: Korean Firm Creates Awareness On Oral Health Among Ukhrul Footballers – EastMojo https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/manipur-korean-firm-creates-awareness-on-oral-health-among-ukhrul-footballers-eastmojo/
Camp set up by Atomy India in Ukhrul
Ukhrul: Atomy India, a Korean healthcare firm, conducted an awareness campaign on oral health hygiene among young footballers in the Ukhrul district on Sunday.
During the awareness campaign, Atomy India through the Atomy Ultimate Ukhrul Center, distributed Atomy oral care kit to at least 75 underprivileged children who are currently undergoing football training at Ukhrul FC Academy. The campaign programme was also attended by the management staff of Ukhrul FC Academy.
The campaign is part of the 75-day mass awareness campaign on oral hygiene across the country by Atomy India. Under the initiative, Atomy India will reach out to over 7,500 children with the oral hygiene initiative.
“It is a great privilege for Ukhrul FC Academy kids to participate in this oral hygiene campaign. The people of the Ukhrul district hardly receive any kind of government-related schemes/beneficiaries or any CSR facilities due to various reasons. But this time, we are extremely happy to see our kids participate and receive the Atomy products,” said Khareithan, executive director, Ukhrul FC Academy.
According to Khareithan, most of the students at the Academy are from the economically-weak background and they are being sponsored by the local community and well-wishers.
Ukhrul FC Academy was launched in May this year with an objective to train the young budding talents of the hill district in football. Moreover, through football training, the academy encourages the youth to lead a healthy living, as drug abuse is becoming a social menace in society.

Ever wanted to play giant beer pong in Fortnite? Soon you’ll be able to.
“Tonight at the Rock — Powered by Samsung Galaxy” will launch tomorrow, September 20. / NBC Universal
NBC Universal (NBCU) and Samsung are launching a new marketing and fan engagement push, titled “Tonight at the Rock – Powered by Samsung Galaxy,”which will take place in a virtual rendering of Rockefeller Center. The virtual experience is being hosted in Fortnite, the hugely popular online multiplayer game that has come to serve as a major gateway for brands looking to connect with their audiences in the “metaverse.”
Once inside the “co-branded virtual NYC” – as described in a statement from NBCU – visitors will be challenged to ascend from the ground floor all the way up to Studio 6B – the IRL version of which is the where “The Tonight Show” is filmed inside Rockefeller Center – collecting Samsung device-themed “power-ups” along the way. They can also play a number of “mini-games,” including giant beer pong, a game which will be familiar to many fans of the show.
“At Samsung, we’re always looking for opportunities to give users one-of-a-kind experiences with their Galaxy devices,” Janet Lee, senior-vice president of mobile experience at Samsung Electronics America, said in a statement. “‘Tonight at the Rock’ empowers fans with a unique social adventure right in the heart of 30 Rock, all enhanced through in-game Samsung power-ups made possible by the Galaxy ecosystem. We are so excited to offer late night fans the first-ever interactive ‘Tonight Show’ gaming experience, in a way that honors our longstanding creative partnership.”
“Tonight at the Rock — Powered by Samsung Galaxy” is an extension of a pre-existing partnership between Samsung and NBCU. In another collaborative effort in early 2019, “The Tonight Show” aired an episode that was filmed entirely on a Samsung Galaxy S10+ smartphone.
“We’ve been collaborating with Samsung on unique, engaging integrations for over the past few years to bring ‘Tonight Show’ audiences first-of-its-kind experiences they can’t connect with anywhere else,” Mark Marshall, President, NBCU’s President of Advertising and Partnerships, said in a statement. “Now, we are transforming with our partners as the industry dives further into tech-enabled activations such as metaverse platforms redefining interactive advertising within iconic pieces of IP like NBC’s Late Night slate.”
Samsung has been recently making great efforts to distinguish itself as a pioneering brand in the metaverse. In June, it held an event in Roblox called Samsung Superstar Galaxy, which featured a virtual performance from Charli XCX. It also hosted a Valentine’s Day event in Decentraland earlier this year.
“Tonight at the Rock — Powered by Samsung Galaxy” will go live tomorrow, September 20. Following the launch, Wednesday’s broadcast of “The Tonight Show” will also promote the new virtual experience with “a special in-show integration mirroring one of the games IRL.”
