Solar-Powered Crypto Farm In Australia To Prove Bitcoin Mining Can Be Green – Mining Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/solar-powered-crypto-farm-in-australia-to-prove-bitcoin-mining-can-be-green-mining-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ A crypto mining data center in the state of South Australia will be running mainly on solar-generated electricity, a media report reveals. The coin minting facility has been set up in a region known for its energy-hungry iron ore extraction and steel production. Bitcoin Farm to Mine Cryptocurrency on Solar and Excess Energy in South Australia The ‘Steel City’ of Whyalla in South Australia has become home to a new crypto mining installation that will run on electricity generated from solar power. Operated by the Lumos Digital Mining company, the 5-megawatt facility will be minting bitcoin, a process often blamed for its energy-intensive nature. Australian national broadcaster ABC notes in a report that at a time when the world is trying to reduce energy consumption, the extraction of the leading cryptocurrency by market capitalization uses more power than medium-sized nations such as Argentina. It’s echoing criticism often highlighted by mass media around the world. Local authorities see the solar-based crypto mining project as a proof that bitcoin generation can be more environmentally friendly. Commenting on the undertaking, South Australia State Minister for Trade and Investment Nick Champion elaborated: This is important for decarbonizing blockchain, which is a very energy-intensive industry. I think it’s the beginning of a new economy out here at Whyalla. The government official also hopes to see other data centers mining cryptocurrency using renewable energy in the future. “There will be demand for blockchain, but also carbon-neutral blockchain so I think we will see more and more facilities like this,” he expects. His statement comes after a recent report by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy estimated that cryptocurrency production in the United States alone represents as much as 0.3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. According to a Lumos Digital Mining representative, the new crypto farm can potentially mint around 100 BTC annually, depending on the available power. Angelo Kondylas said the company could also sell some of its solar power to other consumers or increase crypto output to utilize surplus energy from different sources when electricity generation exceeds demand. Kondylas pointed out that power generators may suffer heavy losses when they switch off at times of low consumption. “We are basically like a sponge. We soak up the excess that’s not used,” he explained. The operator intends to eventually double the size of the mining facility. Bitcoin mining on renewable and surplus energy has been gaining traction around the world, with growing investor interest in solar-based coin minting projects in the U.S. and increasing capacity of cryptocurrency farms running on associated petroleum gas (APG) at Russia’s oil fields. 2022 U.S. Open Had Several Historic Firsts In Wheelchair Tennis Forbes
2022 U.S. Open Had Several Historic Firsts In Wheelchair Tennis – Forbes https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/2022-u-s-open-had-several-historic-firsts-in-wheelchair-tennis-forbes/ Getty Images If you were at Flushing Meadows, New York City, in the week ending on September 11 and only caught the tennis events won by Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Poland’s Iga Świątek then you really didn’t catch all that the U.S. Open 2022 had to offer. And if you missed the Wheelchair Tennis Championships there then you really missed out on what’s been a growing and exciting part of the U.S. Open and all of tennis. Grand Slam Runs By Diede de Groot and Shingo Kunieda The 2022 U.S. Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships featured historic runs by not one but two perennial champions who should be smack in the middle of any greatest of all-time (GOAT) tennis player conversations. The Netherlands’ Diede de Groot won the women’s title for the fifth straight time after defeating Japan’s Yui Kamiji 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the finals. In the process, de Groot completed a Grand Slam in wheelchair singles for the second straight year. Yes, you heard that correctly, she’s won all four major championships, the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open, for not just one but two consecutive years. Winning every single major championship in a sport in a year would kind of qualify as dominant, period. In fact, de Groot made it a golden slam in 2022 when she added a Paralympic gold medal in Tokyo, Japan, along with the four major titles. Corbis via Getty Images Meanwhile, Japan’s Shingo Kunieda, who had already assembled 28 major singles titles over the years in a very GOAT-ish manner, tried to become the first man to garner the wheelchair singles Grand Slam. He had swept through the other three majors earlier this year. Before the 2922 U.S. Open semi-finals, Kunieda told me that “He was playing well. I like the U.S. Open. Playing on hard courts is comfortable.” However, in the finals, Britain’s Alfie Hewett slammed down Kunieda’s Grand Slam aspirations. 7-6, 6-1. Nevertheless, in the Grand scheme of things, that loss was just a drop-shot in a career that has many calling Kunieda the GOAT among men and has earned Kunieda quite a fan following. You can’t fully appreciate wheelchair tennis, or tennis, in general, for that matter, until you’ve seen players like de Groot and Kunieda play live. The pace at which both hit their groundstrokes is striking, especially when you consider the fact that all of the power comes from their upper body strength. Imagine trying to hit a ball over the net from a seated position. Then try to do that while generating topspin and getting the ball deep in your opponent’s backcourt. Oh, and try not to hit yourself or the chair along the way. If you’ve managed to do all that, throw another world class athlete on the other side of the net to pound the ball back at you. The wheelchair tennis championships offered a lot of the same excitement served up by the other tennis events of the U.S. Open plus some extra spins. Each time a player hit a shot, he or she had to quickly move into position for the next shot. Since the player couldn’t readily shuffle side-to-side because that’s not how wheelchairs in the current time-space continuum work, the player had to instead spin the wheelchair around in a strikingly fluid manner that’s part Super Bowl wide receiver and part Dancing with the Stars. Again, the player had to do all of this with his or her upper body. This “chair work,” which Kunieda described as, “my weapon” is a big part of wheelchair tennis and can be mesmerizing to watch when a champion does it so elegantly. de Groot did say, “I don’t see myself as talented. I just really enjoy the hard work,” but let’s be realistic, very few people in the world could get a wheelchair to move like de Groot and Kunieda can. Jason Harnett, the Director of Wheelchair Tennis for the USTA and the Head Coach for Team USA, called this movement “Circular mobility. Once you hit the ball, you use circular patterns to put yourself in the right position.” A Historic Expansion of Wheelchair Tennis The 2022 U.S. Open also featured the largest ever wheelchair player field in Grand Slam history. Both the men’s and women’s singles fields doubled from eight from last year to 16 this year. Each of the doubles fields expanded to eight teams as well. Plus, the 2022 tournament had junior wheelchair events for the first time. Kunieda remarked that the expansion was “good for promotion of the sport,” and de Groot felt that the “the U.S. Open feels even more like an actual tournament [with the expanded field.]” She also indicated that “it is always great to play in the Louis Armstrong stadium [one of the two main courts at the U.S. Open.] It is such a nice time to be in wheelchair tennis. By letting us play on center court, tournaments are taking us more seriously.” The Return of the GOAT, Esther Vergeer The runs by de Groot and Kunieda and the expanded fields weren’t the only things that made this year’s U.S. Open wheelchair championships historic. A number of the sport’s luminaries and pioneers were on the grounds at Flushing Meadows during this year’s tournament. One of them was the GOAT of GOATs, Esther Vergeer, who’s been called the Roger Federer of wheelchair tennis. Or perhaps a way to compliment Federer would be calling him the Esther Vergeer of men’s able-bodied tennis. When Vergeer retired from professional competition in 2013, Federer said that he “will never be able to relate to [Vergeer’s level of dominance],” as can be seen in the following video: When a person who’s been frequently called a GOAT like Federer can’t relate to your level of dominance, you know you’ve been a super-GOAT. Or an ultra-GOAT. Or a GO-GOAT as in Greatest of Greatest of All-Time. Vergeer dominated her sport to a ridiculous degree. She went undefeated in women’s singles matches for a 10-year span, winning 120 tournaments and 470 matches, while not losing a single game in 95 matches. During that time, she managed a 120-match, 26-month streak of not dropping even a single set. No matter how talented you are. No matter how much above the competition you may be. You figure that you’ll have off-days here and there while every opponent you encounter will be super motivated to upset you with a nothing to lose attitude. But, despite all this, Vergeer didn’t slip up a single time during a decade. When speaking to Vergeer, I tried to get some sense of what it might feel like to maintain that level of dominance for that long. But as a mere mortal whose longest streaks have been more in the eating chocolate realm, it was hard for me to relate. She explained, “It felt so good being in so much control during the winning streak. I felt powerful and like I could do whatever I wanted to do, not only on the court.” In dominating the sport, Vergeer has helped elevate the sport in many ways. For example, de Groot relayed that watching Vergeer in Holland inspired her and many other players. Dave Dellinger/USTA Vergreer talked about how the sport has changed since her playing days. “When I was playing, Grand slams were starting to integrate wheelchair tennis, first as exhibitions and then as real Grand Slams. There was hesitation at first such as will it mess up the players lounge by making it too crowded.” But all that has changed. Vergreer mentioned how the prize money has jumped up from “maybe $10,000 to now in maybe the $60k level.” The Evolution of the Sport Another wheelchair luminary and pioneer on hand at this year’s U.S. Open was Brad Parks, a 2010 inductee into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. After a 1976 skiing accident left him paralyzed from the hips down, Parks did the exact opposite of wallow. Along with wheelchair athlete Jeff Minnebraker, he basically helped start the sport of wheelchair tennis. It certainly wasn’t smooth sailing. In fact, Parks told me how early on in the early 1980’s, “one of the most powerful persons in wheelchair sport told me ‘you are wasting your time with wheelchair tennis because you can’t move side-to-side.’ Telling a 21-year-old kid this was deflating.” Fortunately for the sport and many other athletes, Parks didn’t give up and ended doing the opposite. He created the organization that got things started, eventually passing the mantle to the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and U.S. Tennis Association (USTA). Dave Dellinger/USTA A lot has changed since Parks first pioneered the sport. Parks talked about how “Jeff started making lightweight wheelchairs unlike the airport-type chairs that was were used before.” Since then the wheelchairs have really evolved. One thing that has changed has been the camber of the wheels. The camber is the angle of the wheels relative to the ground with zero camber meaning that the wheels are completely perpendicular to the ground. While the original wheels had only a few degrees of camber, current wheelchairs being used in competition have about a 20 degree camber. “This makes the base of the wheelchair so wide,” Harnett explained. “This along with the anti-tip wheel in the back makes allows the movement of the chair to be more quick and agile. It really allows the athletes to train harder and be more aggressive.” Both Harnett and Parks described how the sport over the years has adapted technology from other sports such as strapping from snowboarding and various types of padding. The Growth of the U.S. Program and Dana Mathewson Pete Staples/USTA Of course, you can have all the talent in the world but only get so far without help. The path of American wheelchair tennis star Dana Mathewson has shown how stronger national programs can take the sport to another level. de Groot mentioned, “being lucky to have a world champion [Vergeer] in Holland,” and the benefits of a “having tight and strong team.” Mathewson, who was born and raised in San Diego and suffered a spinal co...

Set the Schedule EARLY The cruise line will open up reservations for dining, spa treatments and excursions prior to departure. Book accordingly. “If you wait till the cruise, options may not be available,” says Feinberg. “You want to enjoy all the ship has to offer.” Don’t Miss the Boat Flight delays could make you miss your cruise, as we’ve seen from the recent Airmageddon horrors this year, says Feinberg. Plan to get to the cruise departure destination at least one or two days ahead of time to avoid being left at the dock. Stock Your Carry-On Airlines lose bags — and even if yours are just delayed, once the ship sets sail, you’re out of luck, says Feinberg. Pack medications, extra clothes and a swimsuit in your carry-on, just in case. This is its second year and organizers say the crawl has added 50 more businesses to the list. With a $10 pass, shoppers get certain discounts just for the crawl. The Coffee House on Cherry Street participated in the event and offered a 20 percent discount. Manager Amanda Busky says she’s noticed the line has been longer. “We have been pretty busy this weekend. We have filled up a lot. Yesterday, we were super busy, hardly anywhere to park, so we have had a lot of business come from this.” The crawl ends Saturday, but organizers say they are already planning next year’s event.

BYU nutrition professor Sarah Bellini shared start-of-semester tips and encouragement for students trying to eat healthy on a budget. (Alyssa Regis) BYU nutrition professor Sarah Bellini shared start-of-semester tips and encouragement for students trying to eat healthy on a budget. Cooking a well-balanced meal doesn’t need to be expensive or time consuming. According to Bellini, it’s something every student can easily do—once they know what to look for. Bellini said that one of the most common misconceptions students have about cooking healthy is knowing what is healthy. “People think, if I’m healthy, I’m going to have to cook all organic or have fresh fruit and vegetables all the time,” Bellini said. “You just have to eat them!” Bellini recommended using canned versions of fruits and vegetables since they have the same amount of vitamins and minerals but stay longer in the kitchen and are easy to use. In fact, fresh fruits and vegetables lose vitamin C over time, so Bellini encouraged students to utilize canned produce.  Bellini also shared tips for students on a budget trying to cook more healthy this semester. She recommended talking to roommates before shopping. “Sometimes it is more cost effective to buy food in bulk and divide it up,” Bellini said. She also said to plan ahead by making a grocery list and shopping the shelf for food on sale. In the spirit of planning ahead, consider cooking a larger meal on the weekend and using food storage containers to portion out meals for busier nights. Bellini isn’t the only one looking at the common misconception surrounding healthy cooking. Kaitlin Kartchner, the registered campus dietitian, said that many students incorrectly think that eating healthy means being super strict about your diet. “I think it’s very individual and doesn’t have to be a set plan,” Kartchner said. For students living in a dorm, Kartchner recommended treating the Cannon Center like a grocery store and shopping around for your meal. “You can always build your own plate and make it what you want it to be,” she said. Bellini said if students want to do well in school, they should embrace healthy eating. “Taking care of their bodies and fueling them correctly will help them perform well,” Bellini said. Kartchner reminded that students are able to make an appointment with her for free nutrition counseling. Both want students to do their best by eating right. A study published by the National Library of Medicine showed that eating healthy is related to a lifestyle with positive impacts on the mindset. Although participants in the study were aware of proper eating habits, many admitted that they weren’t following them. Graphic with tips on how to eat healthy on a budget. BYU nutrition professor Sarah Bellini shared start-of-semester tips and encouragement for students trying to eat healthy on a budget.(Graphic made in Canva by Alyssa Regis) BYU student Kelli England said that as the school year progresses and her free time decreases, time spent chopping and sautéing gets replaced with three-minute microwave dinners. “I feel like I definitely rely more on Trader Joe’s frozen dinners when I’m a little bit busier,” England said. “However, it does feel good to actually cook something.” She said she gets a mental break that brings satisfaction when she sits down to a meal she took 30 minutes out of her day to make. Bellini said cooking doesn’t have to require lots of time and money and recommended that students plan ahead and make just a few simple changes to the grocery list.

Wake Forest Vs. Liberty: Live Updates, Score, Results, Highlights, For Saturday’s NCAA Football Game – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/wake-forest-vs-liberty-live-updates-score-results-highlights-for-saturdays-ncaa-football-game-cbs-sports/ The Liberty Flames fans better hope the squad plays one heck of a game on Saturday as the odds are decidedly against them. They will take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons at 5 p.m. ET at Truist Field. It was all tied up 7-7 at the half for Liberty and the UAB Blazers last week, but the Flames stepped up in the second half for a 21-14 victory. Liberty QB Kaidon Salter was slinging it as he accumulated 202 passing yards in addition to rushing for one TD and 76 yards. Liberty’s defense was a presence as well, as it got past the Blazers’ offensive line to sack QB Dylan Hopkins four times for a total loss of 31 yards. Leading the way was DE TreShaun Clark and his two sacks. Those were the first sacks for Clark. Meanwhile, while not quite a landslide, the game between Wake Forest and the Vanderbilt Commodores last week was still a pretty decisive one as Wake Forest wrapped it up with a 45-25 win on the road. Wake Forest QB Sam Hartman did work as he passed for four TDs and 300 yards on 27 attempts. Hartman’s 68-yard touchdown toss to WR A.T. Perry in the first quarter made for one of the most memorable moments of the day. Their wins lifted both teams to an identical 2-0. Liberty caused 4 turnovers against the Blazers, so the Demon Deacons will need to take especially good care of the ball. Season Leaders passing K. Salter350 YD, 2 TDS, 1 INTK. Georgia Techs Geoff Collins Experiment Needs To End The Atlanta Journal Constitution
Georgia Tech’s Geoff Collins Experiment Needs To End – The Atlanta Journal Constitution https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/georgia-techs-geoff-collins-experiment-needs-to-end-the-atlanta-journal-constitution/ In Geoff Collins’ 37th game as coach, Georgia Tech was overwhelmed by Ole Miss. The Rebels led 14-0 after five minutes and nine seconds. They led 21-0 at the half, 42-0 at the end. They did nothing fancy. They ran the ball. That’s all it took. If you didn’t know Lane Kiffin, epitome of 21st century cool, was coaching Ole Miss, you wouldn’t have guessed. This looked like a throwback to the days when Johnny Vaught brought his team to town to face Bobby Dodd, the difference being that Dodd’s Jackets were never helpless. ExploreMore AJC coverage of the Yellow Jackets Over their past four games against Power 5 opposition, Collins’ Jackets have been outscored 183-10. Whatever he’s doing, it’s not working. It’s not working to the extent you can’t imagine it ever working. The No. 20 Rebels needed five plays, four of them runs, to score. After they blocked a punt, it took them six plays, four of them runs, to score again. When you can hand off the ball for a first down on third-and-7 and a touchdown on third-and-goal from the 7, why pass? Tech was outgained 547 yards to 214, outrushed 316 yards to 53. The only adjustment Kiffin, style influencer, made involved haberdashery. He worked the first half in a powder blue T-shirt and matching sneakers. He added a white hoodie for the second. As for what Collins was doing: Who knows? Trailing 14-0, he eschewed a field-goal try, opting to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 4. Jeff Sims was sacked. Tech would remain pointless. I understand being aggressive. I try to understand analytics. That said, a 14-3 deficit midway through the second quarter after having been roundly outplayed wouldn’t have been a terrible thing. ExploreGeorgia Tech waylaid by Ole Miss at Bobby Dodd Stadium In the first quarter, Ole Miss chose to punt from the Tech 38. The Jackets were flagged for illegal substitution, which moved the Rebels within range of a longish field-goal try. The kick was blocked, but still. With Ole Miss leading 21-0 and driving, Collins made no effort to buy his team a chance to answer before halftime. When an interception halted the Rebels, 24 seconds remained. Tech hadn’t deigned to call timeout. Why? To round out the merriment, the Jackets ran the ball. For reasons unclear, they snapped it again, as opposed to letting time expire, from their 23 as the half ended. What? After three full seasons under Collins, Tech still doesn’t do anything well. Through this season’s first two games – the first against Clemson, the second against Western Carolina – the Jackets ranked 14th among 14 ACC teams in offensive efficiency, 11th in defensive efficiency, 14th in passing offense, 11th in passing defense, ninth in rushing, eighth in rushing defense. (That last category just took a heavy hit.) Maybe Tech was ready to play. (Collins said it was.) Maybe Ole Miss is just too good. This, however, was as easy a road victory as one Power 5 team can have against another. Bobby Dodd Stadium wasn’t full at the start. By halftime, some home fans were booing Collins, master of the non-timeout. When it was done, there was no booing. Apart from Ole Miss backers, only the Tech band was still around, and it was playing “Ramblin’ Wreck.” ExplorePHOTOS: Yellow Jackets are routed by Ole Miss Any recruiting traction Collins gained – and he did gain some – is gone. His best signee starts for Alabama. There’s no way any prized transfer wants to slide into this mess. This program has nothing going for it. (Paul Johnson’s Tech always had Paul Johnson’s offense.) Afterward, Collins said such a performance “is not up to the standard of Georgia Tech football.” Alas, this has become Tech’s standard. Against an opponent of quality, it can’t compete. Collins again: “That falls completely on me.” And it does. He was Todd Stansbury’s choice to lead Tech beyond the Johnson era. By side-to-side comparison, those years now shimmer like the glory days of Dodd. Even the two-plus years of Bill Lewis weren’t like this. Asked if he was still the man for Tech, Collins said, “Absolutely.” But what’s he going to say? Here’s the terrifying part: He’s not yet at the halfway point of his Stansbury-supplied contract. As awful as Tech football has become, nothing says it won’t get worse. This was the kind of game that can get somebody fired, and it should. Ole Miss 42, Georgia Tech 0

A year ago, college football fans could not escape an Applebee’s commercial. This year, it’s Nick Saban chasing a goat. A year ago, Georgia was 3-0, having utterly dominated its early schedule, but there was one big red flag, one clear Achilles’ heel for an otherwise terrific football team. His name was Stetson Bennett IV. What a difference a year makes. Bennett wrapped his day early Saturday, leading the Bulldogs to a 48-7 thrashing of South Carolina. In the game, Bennett completed 16 of 23 passes for 284 yards and two TDs, then added another 36 yards on three rushes, one going for a touchdown. How good was Bennett on Saturday? He did all this while, according to the ESPN broadcast, he was sick and throwing up on the sidelines during the game. The play before Bennett vomited featured one of the most spectacular grabs a tight end has ever made. After he vomited, Bennett was 6-of-10 for 159 yards with a passing and rushing score. The man is a legend. A year ago, Bennett was keeping the QB1 chair warm for JT Daniels. Now, he’s completing 74% of his passes and averaging 11 yards every time he throws the ball. In a game in which no Georgia player ran for more than 36 yards (that was Bennett, by the way), the Bulldogs still cruised to an easy road victory against an SEC East foe. It’s mind-boggling just how good this team has looked. Like last year, Georgia opened against a ranked foe. But this time, rather than a narrow 10-3 win over Clemson behind a stagnant offense, the Bulldogs dominated Oregon 49-3. Like last year, Georgia moved to 3-0 with an easy win over the Gamecocks, but this time around, it wasn’t a test run for Bennett helming the offense but rather the latest example that he’s just built different. A year ago, Georgia outscored its first three opponents by a score of 106-23. One national title and a busload of NFL draft picks later, the Dawgs are 3-0 again by a combined score of 130-10. No, this is not the 2021 Georgia Bulldogs. This team might be even better because this isn’t 2021’s Stetson Bennett. The guy spent last season doing what no one believed possible, then celebrated with a championship and an appearance on “Good Morning America.” This year? As impossible as it might sound, he might end up doing even more. The Fun Belt rides again Oh, you thought Week 2 was drama-filled in the Sun Belt? Appalachian State was just getting warmed up. One week after the Sun Belt pulled off three shocking upsets, the conference delivered another trio of games that culminated with last-second drama. Old Dominion nearly pulled off its second shocker of the season against Virginia, scoring late to take a lead over the Cavaliers. But a frenetic drive down the field put UVA in range for a chip-shot field goal and a last-second win. Out West, South Alabama came oh-so-close to taking down undefeated UCLA. The Jaguars attempted a fake field goal from the UCLA 22 with 2:52 remaining, and it went horribly. Tanner McGee was tackled for an 11-yard loss, the Bruins got the ball back, drove 61 yards on 10 plays and delivered a game-winning field goal as time expired. The Sun Belt has four wins over Power 5 teams this season, but it also now has three losses on the final play of the game. And speaking of final plays, App State delivered one for the ages, as Chase Brice‘s Hail Mary heave came up short of the end zone, was deflected and caught by receiver Christian Horn at the 8, who then took a looping path toward the sideline and sprinted into the end zone for a shocking 32-28 win. APP STATE WON ON A HAIL MARY ON THE FINAL PLAY pic.twitter.com/yDlzYYtU19 — ESPN (@espn) September 17, 2022 A quick flashback to the past three weeks for the Mountaineers: Week 1: App State scores 40 points in the fourth quarter against North Carolina, including two touchdowns in the final 31 seconds, but was upended by two failed 2-point tries. Week 2: App State goes on the road to Texas A&M and pulls off the massive upset of the sixth-ranked Aggies, the biggest win for the program since its famed victory over Michigan in 2007. Week 3: A walk-off Hail Mary in a win over Troy on a day ESPN’s College GameDay came to campus. That the mayor of Boone hasn’t announced some sort of “Purge” situation in which everything is legal for 24 hours probably doesn’t matter much. The party on the mountain might last until next week’s kickoff against James Madison. It’s getting ugly at Auburn Across the state of Alabama, Auburn boosters are sitting in smoke-filled rooms, maniacally patting their checkbooks and cackling like Bond villains. It’s buyout season again on The Plains. It must’ve been frustrating last week for all those Auburn money men to witness Nebraska make an expensive coaching change and think, “Why not us?” Undoubtedly, there was a powder keg of nervous anticipation Saturday, as Penn State — the first Big Ten visitor to Jordan-Hare Stadium — ran the ball to the tune of 245 yards and five touchdowns in a 41-12 win, with the knowledge that spending a bunch of money on another failed coaching hire was now within arm’s reach. Boosters were likely reaching for their wallets faster than Nick Singleton runs the 40. There was, to be sure, a brief moment of horror when Robby Ashford entered the game and created a spark for the Tigers. Could Bryan Harsin, amid a blowout loss, have found a savior? No. The Auburn offense quickly regressed to its fundamental mediocrity, and again, order was restored and boosters breathed a sigh of relief. After nearly nixing Harsin last winter, then forcing out the athletics director who hired him last month, the question always felt more about when a change was coming than if it would happen. And at Auburn, there’s nothing the Tigers do better than letting a head coach twist in the wind. How long will Harsin twist? Auburn has won just two of its past eight games, has scored 24 points or less in six of them. After a home game against Missouri in Week 4, the remaining schedule includes games against five ranked teams. Bowl eligibility could be tough, and that’s an awfully low bar for a fan base that, by its very nature, must compare itself to Alabama. That’s bad news for Harsin, of course. But not that bad. That $18 million buyout is cathartic for everyone. Sooners make a statement The change at Nebraska was instantaneous. Scott Frost is gone, and suddenly the Huskers aren’t losing close games anymore. Instead, Nebraska got blown out by former Big 12 rival Oklahoma 49-14. OK, so the problems in Lincoln didn’t end with a coaching change. Instead, Saturday offered emphatic evidence that Oklahoma’s fortunes haven’t shifted with a coaching change either. play 0:28 Dillon Gabriel takes off on a 61-yard run for Oklahoma to tie the game against Nebraska. In its first game against a Power 5 foe with Brent Venables at the helm, Oklahoma looked an awful lot like the Sooners we’ve come to expect. The offense was potent, with Dillon Gabriel throwing for two touchdowns and running for another. The defense dominated. After Nebraska scored on its opening drive, the Huskers didn’t sniff the end zone again until the game was well out of hand. As with Venables’ best Clemson teams, the Oklahoma defensive front dominated the line of scrimmage, tormenting Casey Thompson to the tune of four sacks. For the Sooners, it was a statement that Lincoln Riley’s departure won’t keep this team from being in the playoff hunt. For the Huskers, it was a perfect opportunity to interview Urban Meyer for the open head-coaching job. After all, Nebraska has lots of wide-open spaces for a man to display his picture frames. Around the horn for the FCS Week 3 again had its share of FBS-FCS mismatches, but that didn’t mean the games came without any interest. The good: Southern Illinois’ defense forced four turnovers as the Salukis scored the upset over Northwestern, 31-24, on Saturday. Reminder: Northwestern beat Nebraska but is now not even close to being the best team in the state of Illinois. The bad: Virginia Tech cruised to a 27-7 win over Wofford, but that wasn’t all bad for the Terriers. Nathan Walker‘s 3-yard TD run with 9:34 to play marked the first points of the year for 0-3 Wofford. That’s progress! The ugly: Kent State earned its first win of the season, thumping Long Island University 63-10. LIU cashes its share of FBS checks, but what it has done with that money is anyone’s guess. In addition to Saturday’s defeat, the Sharks (we looked that up) lost 37-0 to Toledo in Week 1, 42-7 to Miami (Ohio) and 66-0 to West Virginia last year, and opened the 2021 season with a 48-10 loss to a Florida International team that didn’t win again that season. So, if you’re keeping score at home, that’s five games vs. FBS foes in the past 13 months that resulted in an 0-5 record by a combined score of 256-20. Long Island University is to college football teams as Long Island iced teas are to beverages — it’s comprised of a haphazard assortment of ingredients and results in a seemingly endless series of bad decisions. The most college football thing to happen Saturday There’s a long and colorful history of mascot shaming among rivals in college football, but this week, Virginia took things too far. On Wednesday, Hudson — the yellow lab puppy and Old Dominion‘s unofficial mascot — announced via his Twitter account that he’d been denied field access for Saturday’s road game i...

Death Of GPU Mining? Popular Crypto Profits Go Into Negative As Ethereum Miners Flood Market | Bitcoinist.com – Bitcoinist https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/death-of-gpu-mining-popular-crypto-profits-go-into-negative-as-ethereum-miners-flood-market-bitcoinist-com-bitcoinist/ Mining profits of the PoW cryptos have gone into the negative following the Ethereum merge as ETH miners flood the hashrates of these other coins. Mining Profits Of Popular Proof-Of-Work Cryptos Like Ethereum Classic Crater After The Merge A couple of days ago, the much awaited ETH merge finally arrived and transitioned the network into a PoS-based consensus mechanism. Since proof-of-stake chains don’t rely on miners for hashing blocks, every miner attached to Ethereum was left without the whole of their revenues. Some of these miners have sold off their mining rigs in order to exit the market, while others have moved onto the remaining proof-of-work networks. There is, however, one problem with miners shifting to other coins and it is that all the PoW cryptos that utilize graphics cards for mining (that is, those other than Bitcoin) had magnitudes lesser hashrate than ETH did before the merge. There is a general concept of mining difficulty across crypto chains, where the network adjusts the rate at which miners can hash new blocks according to the total hashrate. Usually, coins increase the difficulty when the hashrate goes up to balance things out and keep the block production rate near constant. A flood of GPUs previously being used for ETH mining suddenly entering into these other, significantly smaller hashrates would therefore result in a difficulty explosion. Here is some data from the crypto mining profits calculator website WhatToMine that shows where the profits of the PoW coins with some of the largest market caps currently stand: No crypto in the list is offering positive mining profits currently | Source: WhatToMine As you can see in the above table, Ethereum Classic, the coin that’s currently the most popular mining option in the market, nets miners a profit of -$0.78 per hour right now. This figure assumes an average electricity price of $0.1 per kWh, and uses the hash of three AMD RX 480 graphics cards for making the calculation. Even with the strongest GPU available on the market, the 3090ti, ETC mining hourly profits remain in the negative at around -$0.50. As some already speculated before the merge, it would appear there just wasn’t any crypto with hashrate and market cap large enough to absorb the ETH miners, which made up for the vast majority of GPU crypto miners out there. It’s possible a PoW coin can rise up in the future to become large enough to host comparable amounts of hashrate as Ethereum once did, but for now it would seem graphics cards-based mining may be dead. ETH Price At the time of writing, Ether’s price floats around $1.4k, down 6% in the past week. The Roar Of A US Warplane Over A Civilian Irish Airport Peoples Dispatch
The Roar Of A US Warplane Over A Civilian Irish Airport Peoples Dispatch
The Roar Of A US Warplane Over A Civilian Irish Airport – Peoples Dispatch https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-roar-of-a-us-warplane-over-a-civilian-irish-airport-peoples-dispatch/ Margaretta D’Arcy and Niall Farrell’s incursion onto the runway at Shannon Airport on 7th October 2012. Shanonwatch “This is not a regular airport,” Margaretta D’Arcy said to me as we heard a C-130T Hercules prepare to take off from Shannon Airport in Ireland after 3 p.m. on September 11, 2022. That enormous U.S. Navy aircraft (registration number 16-4762) had flown in from Sigonella, a US Naval Air Station in Italy. A few minutes earlier, a US Navy C-40A (registration number 16-6696) left Shannon for the US military base at Stuttgart, Germany, after flying in from Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia. Shannon is not a regular airport, D’Arcy said, because while it is merely a civilian airport, it allows frequent US military planes to fly in and out of it, with Gate 42 of the airport functioning as its “forward operating base.” At the age of 88, D’Arcy, who is a legendary Irish actress and documentary filmmaker, is a regular member of Shannonwatch, comprising a group of activists who have—since 2008—held monthly vigils at a roundabout near the airport. Shannonwatch’s objectives are to “end U.S. military use of Shannon Airport, to stop rendition flights through the airport, and to obtain accountability for both from the relevant Irish authorities and political leaders.” Edward Horgan, a veteran of the Irish military who had been on peacekeeping missions to Cyprus and Palestine, told me that this vigil is vital. “It’s important that we come here every month,” he said, “because without this there is no visible opposition” to the footprint of the US military in Ireland. According to a report from Shannonwatch titled “Shannon Airport and 21st Century War,” the use of the airport as a US forward operating base began in 2002-2003, and this transformation “was, and still is, deeply offensive to the majority of Irish people.” Article 29 of the Irish Constitution of 1937 sets in place the framework for the country’s neutrality. Allowing a foreign military to use Irish soil violates Article 2 of the Hague Convention of 1907, to which Ireland is a signatory. Nonetheless, said John Lannon of Shannonwatch, the Irish government has allowed almost 3 million U.S. troops to pass through Shannon Airport since 2002 and has even assigned a permanent staff officer to the airport. “Irish airspace and Shannon Airport became the virtual property of the US war machine,” said Niall Farrell of Galway Alliance Against War. “Irish neutrality was truly dead.” Pitstop of death Margaretta D’Arcy’s eyes gleam as she recounts her time at the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp, located in Berkshire, England, and involving activists from Wales, who set up to prevent the storage and passage of US cruise missiles at this British military base. That camp began in 1981 and lasted until 2000. D’Arcy went to jail three times during this struggle (out of a total of at least 20 times she was in prison for her antiwar activism). “It was good,” she told me, “because we got rid of the weapons and the land was restored to the people. It took 19 years. Women consistently fought until we got what we wanted.” When D’Arcy was arrested, the prison authorities stripped her to search her. She refused to put her clothes back on and went on both a hunger strike and a naked protest. In doing so, she forced the prison authorities to stop the practice of performing strip searches. “If you act with dignity, then you force them to treat you with dignity,” she said. Part of this act of dignity includes refusing to allow her country’s airport to be used as part of the US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Since 2002, several brave people have entered the airport and have attempted to deface US aircraft. On September 5, 2002, Eoin Dubsky painted “No way” on a US warplane (for which he was fined); and then on January 29, 2003, Mary Kelly took an axe onto the runway and hit a military plane, causing $1.5 million in damage; she was also fined. A few weeks later, on February 3, 2003, the Pitstop Ploughshares (a group of five activists who belonged to the Catholic Worker Movement) attacked a US Navy C-40 aircraft—the same one that Mary Kelly had previously damaged—with hammers and a pickaxe (a story recounted vividly by Harry Browne in Hammered by the Irish, 2008). They also spray-painted “Pitstop of Death” on a hangar. In 2012, Margaretta D’Arcy and Niall Farrell marched onto the runway to protest the airport being used by US planes. Arrested and convicted, they nonetheless returned to the runway the next year in orange jumpsuits. During the court proceedings in June 2014, D’Arcy grilled the airport authorities about why they had not arrested the pilot of an armed US Hercules plane that had arrived at Shannon Airport four days after their arrest on the runway. She asked, “Are there two sets of rules—one for people like us trying to stop the bombing and one for the bombers?” Shannon Airport’s inspector Pat O’Neill replied, “I don’t understand the question.” “This is a civilian airport,” D’Arcy told me as she gestured toward the runway. “How does a government allow the military to use a civilian airport?” Extraordinary renditions The US government began illegally transporting prisoners from Afghanistan and other places to its prison in the Guantánamo Bay detention camp and to other “black sites” in Europe, North Africa, and West Asia. This act of transporting the prisoners came to be known as “extraordinary rendition.” In 2005, when Dermot Ahern, Ireland’s minister for foreign affairs, was asked about the “extraordinary rendition” flights into Shannon Airport, he said, “If anyone has any evidence of any of these flights, please give me a call and I will have it immediately investigated.” Amnesty International replied that it had direct evidence that up to six CIA chartered planes had used Shannon Airport approximately 50 times. Four years later, Amnesty International produced a thorough report that showed that their earlier number was deflated and that likely hundreds of such US military flights had flown in and out of the airport. While the Irish government over the years has said that it opposes this practice, the Irish police (the Garda Síochána) have not boarded these flights to inspect them. As a signatory of the European Convention on Human Rights (signed in 1953) and the United Nations Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (adopted in 1984 and ratified in 1987), Ireland is duty-bound to prevent collaboration with “extraordinary rendition,” a position taken by the Irish Council for Civil Liberties. In 2014, Irish parliamentarians Mick Wallace and Clare Daly were arrested at Shannon Airport for trying to search two US aircraft that they believed were carrying “troops and armaments.” They were frustrated by the Irish government’s false assurances. “How do they know? Did they search the planes? Of course not,” Wallace and Daly said. Meanwhile, according to the Shannonwatch report, “Rather than take measures to identify past involvement in rendition or to prevent further complicity, successive Irish [g]overnments have simply denied any possibility that Irish airports or airspace were used by US rendition planes.” In 2006, Conor Cregan rode his bicycle near Shannon Airport. Airport police inspector Lillian O’Shea, who recognized him from protests, confronted him, but Cregan rode off. He was eventually arrested. At Cregan’s trial, O’Shea admitted that the police had been told to stop and harass the activists at the airport. Zoe Lawlor of Shannonwatch told me this story and then said, “harassment such as this reinforces the importance of our protest.” In 2003 and 2015, Sinn Féin—the largest opposition party in the Northern Ireland Assembly—put forward a Neutrality Bill to enshrine the concept of neutrality into the Irish Constitution. The government, said Seán Crowe of Sinn Féin, has “sold Irish neutrality piece by piece against the wishes of the people.” If the idea of neutrality is adopted by the Irish people, it will be because of the sacrifices of people such as Margaretta D’Arcy, Niall Farrell, and Mary Kelly. Are There Any Plans To Fix The Intersection Of Doom? Willamette Week
Are There Any Plans To Fix The Intersection Of Doom? Willamette Week
Are There Any Plans To Fix The Intersection Of Doom? – Willamette Week https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/are-there-any-plans-to-fix-the-intersection-of-doom-willamette-week/ Are there any plans to fix the Intersection of Doom at Southwest Beaverton Hillsdale Highway and Scholls Ferry and Oleson roads? It’s the intersection of about six different roads. The only thing good about it is Sesame Donuts. Hello, how about a roundabout? —Almost Died Getting a Maple Bar The good news, Died, is that Washington County does have a plan for fixing this intersection. The bad news is that the plan was created in 1996 and has been stalled for lack of funding ever since. I don’t want to get too far into the weeds about an intersection many readers won’t have experienced. (Those who have, however, will recall traffic unfolding at impossible angles as in some suburbia-themed Escher print, like those space-warping battle scenes in Doctor Strange but with strip malls instead of skyscrapers.) Briefly, the county’s design would surgically separate what are now essentially conjoined twin intersections by moving Southwest Oleson Road to the east. No roundabouts are involved. But that was 1996! Today such a plan might well include roundabouts, which are having what, if you’re a traffic-control system, probably counts as a moment. In a 2019 community survey about how to fix a similarly fucked intersection 2 miles north of the Oleson morass, a roundabout-based plan beat its competition by nearly 2 to 1. Maybe Americans (or at least Portlanders) are finally warming to Europe’s answer to the four-way stop. But listen up: Roundabouts are not the same as traffic circles. Until 2021, Portland had only two true roundabouts—one by Lewis & Clark College and one near the airport. That circle in the middle of Ladd’s Addition? Not a roundabout. Joanie on the Pony at Northeast Cesar Chavez and Glisan? That’s not one either. The loop at Southwest 18th and Jefferson? Nope. In a true roundabout, entering traffic doesn’t have a stop sign, only a yield sign. (Cars already in the roundabout have right of way.) This requires drivers to cooperate, not something Americans are known for. However, Portland drivers already do it with our uncontrolled intersections, so perhaps we’re readier for roundabouts than more road rage-y cities. In any case, Portland’s complement of roundabouts just doubled (to four), with more to come. Now, if we can only learn NOT to yield when we DO have the right of way. A Connection Resistant To Displacement, Battling Loneliness During Times Of War – Berkeley Beacon https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/a-connection-resistant-to-displacement-battling-loneliness-during-times-of-war-berkeley-beacon/ By Margarita Ivanova September 17, 2022 It was late February during my study abroad program in The Netherlands when I first heard about Russia’s potential attack on Ukraine. The talk of an invasion was simply a rumor until Thursday, Feb. 24. When the news came, no one really knew what to do.  There were many students around me squirming around in fear and ignorance even though we were living in The Netherlands—one of the most disconnected countries in Europe from the war.  The fear didn’t last long though, as spring break came around a few weeks later. We had the privilege of trading our thoughts of war for our travels to Italy, which was going to be our living fantasy for the next week. Spending money like it was a game of monopoly, we first hit Venice, and after three days of gondola rides, it soon came time to frolic away to Florence. It was Thursday, March 8—International Women’s Day—and every restaurant in Venice was handing out bundles of yellow flowers. The day felt like magic; every woman seemed to share a glow of solidarity, feeling acknowledged in a special way. As my friends and I stood up to depart the train back from Florence, I saw her: a woman with a hopeless expression, two bags in hand, and a foreigners confusion that matched mine. I can’t really put the feeling into words, but it led me to give her my flowers.  [elementor-template id=”60935″] “Are you Russian?” she asked me in Russian. As a Bulgarian, I was familiar with the Slavic-rooted language, and found a way to communicate through gestures and an understanding of every other word.  She told me she was a Ukrainian refugee who needed help; she didn’t know where she was going, she didn’t have money, and she was meeting someone somewhere, with a passport deprived of destination. Her name: Anzhelika Holdobina. As we both got off from the next stop, I told her I was a journalist and she quickly gave me her phone number before charging off to her next train. Her presence led me to realize the reality of the refugee crisis. I was no longer distantly watching news interpretations of asylum seekers from a disconnected part of the world. Our technological exchange would soon foster a connection that allowed me to skim the surface of life for refugees. Staying in touch with Holdobina, as well as another family, has not only heightened my awareness and satisfied my curiosity, but it has given them the hope and tenderness of a stranger. Communication gives them the reminder that they are loved and appreciated. Holdobina and I have been in contact on Viber and WhatsApp ever since our exchange, and I received permission from Anzhelika to share bits of our correspondence throughout the past six months. As we have maintained contact, I have been able to follow her journey as she attempts to rebuild her life in Italy. Her story is more than just a political slogan for perseverance, but an example that the statistics and headlines we consume affect real people in heartbreaking ways.  March 8, 2022 :  “Hi Anzhelika, are you doing okay?” March 9, 2022:  “Hi Margarita, housing is not very good, money too, and I need a job, and a family that would take me to live with them, or a single woman. Please help.” After receiving this, I started a GoFundMe, but I was back in the Netherlands. There wasn’t much I could physically do to help. Holdobina had just returned from a three-day journey that bridged through Poland, Austria, to Italy, parting with her husband and son in Kyiv, who were fighting in the war. March 13, 2022:  Her loneliness changed course when she found a short-term sense of peace in a room with a grandmother and four small grandchildren who were also in Florence running from the war. Although there are many organizations and volunteers providing humanitarian aid, Evgeniya Volkova, a Bulgarian-Ukrainian real estate agent part of a non-profit seeking to integrate refugees into family housing, says the process is not an easy one.  “It’s really great when we see families hosting refugees, but the reality is that the other 90% of refugees who don’t get so lucky run the risk of being homeless,” she said. “This fear and lack of comfort makes them very depressed.” During our conversation, Holdobina talked about a comfortable sense of food security, but said finding work was already extremely difficult. March 14, 2022: “Hi Anzhelika, how is your family back home? How are you staying in touch with them?” “I can keep in touch with my family through the internet. But it is really difficult thinking about their position versus mine. They are fighting in a war and I am here with silence and beauty.”  “Have you had any luck finding a job?” “I am trying to get a job, but since I don’t know the language, they won’t take me anywhere, and I want some kind of work at least.” Volkova highlighted the difficulty in job integration also outside of the language barrier, saying that many doctors and highly-ranked professionals are being cornered into working low-wage jobs that don’t align with their strengths. March 25, 2022:  “Hi Anzhelika, The Go Fund Me donations went through, we raised over $300!” “Oh thank you Margarita for your help. I do need the money, I don’t work yet. They help feed us here, but besides food we also need personal items. Hopefully we will be going home to Ukraine soon.” To the average person, $300 doesn’t seem like much, but at the time, it doubled Italy’s approved monthly payment of €300 to Ukrainian arrivals. April 22, 2022:  “How is everything Anzhelika?” “Hello Margarita, life goes on. We are resting, waiting for good news.” I told her that the money was wired, and she thanked me, but the hope of work for her was seemingly slimming down. “We are still waiting for working documents, so we are not working yet, but we are being helped by humanitarian aid. I don’t know when the documents will be ready, for now we are patiently waiting.” “Thank you Margarita for being so attentive and kind.” I couldn’t understand why she was thanking me. It felt like I was doing less than the bare minimum at this point, feeling very privileged each time I reached out. May 20, 2022:  “Do you think you will get to go home soon?” She was now living in Empoli, Italy. She feared the thought of going home, and said it would be too dangerous, though her current situation remained precarious. “I want to stay here, I am learning the language, the state helps with the purchase of products, but no they still haven’t told us about our living situation.” August 19, 2022:  “Hi Anzhelika, How are you? It has been a while. Have you received your working papers? How is your living space? Are things more comfortable?” “Hi Margarita, Life goes on. I am learning a language in an online school. It’s vacation time in Italy, and everyone is on vacation. I am not working yet. We are waiting for the papers. Maybe in Autumn something will change. How are you? Where are you? You have an interesting life, you travel.” I filled her in on my life and my family, and then asked about her loved ones back in Ukraine. I talked about some of my dreams, and sent her some prayers. “Good evening Margarita, My husband and son and I talk on the phone, and sometimes by video link, but of course this is not the same as a living connection. I really want to hug them, but only God knows how soon it will happen. Thank you for your concern and prayers. It really helps to live and hope for the best.” “And your living situation? Are you with the same people?” “Hi Margarita, yes, we still live together with the grandmother and the three grandchildren from Ivano Frankivsk. We are also helped by the state of Italy. And everything is good with my adult children, if you can say so. These are not easy times for Ukraine. You are a smart woman. You will do great things, and I wish you strength, health, and well being. May all of your dreams come true.” Present day:  The refugee crisis continues, with hopes of going home continuously waning for those who are displaced. During times of conflict and war, we tend to hyperfocus on the policy, the resources, and the military, to the point where we leave behind some of the most basic principles of empathy and human connection. Although many of us are disconnected from those experiencing the effects of the war in Ukraine, technology has a set of arms that extend beyond the reach of our experiences.  By taking advantage of this communication, we can share love to the individuals running from war, and fighting the battle of loneliness that exists within working to maintain a sense of direction. It becomes repetitive to share or display solidarity without application. Show refugees they aren’t alone, not just by donating and keeping up with the war, but by sharing a sense of presence through kind words and listening, just as you would if it was your family.

Chinese Citizens Top Number Of Foreigners With Ghana Card – Prof Attafuah – Ghana Business News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/chinese-citizens-top-number-of-foreigners-with-ghana-card-prof-attafuah-ghana-business-news/ Prof Attafuah The National Identification Authority (NIA) says China is the country with the highest number of foreigners issued with Non-citizen National Identity card (Ghana card). Professor Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, Executive Secretary, NIA, said this at a press briefing in Accra on Friday to mark this year’s International Identity Day, after the Ghana News Agency posed a question to him. This comes amid recent controversy of Huang En, popularly known as, Aisha Huang, a Chinese citizen with a non-citizen card re-entering the country after her deportation in 2018 over alleged illegal mining. China has the highest citizens with non-citizen Ghana card with a total of 34,712 cards issued to them, being 22 per cent of the 161,007 citizens from 202 foreign countries. Nigerians constituted the second-largest citizens with non-citizen Ghana card with a total of 25,873 cards, while 20,110 bearers were citizens of India. Per the figures provided by NIA, the cards issued to Germans constituted 4,329; Lebanon, 4,324; United Kingdom (UK), 4,133; South Africa, 3,194; 2,222; Cote D’Ivoire, 2,150 and Gabon, 1,958 cards. Providing an update on the number of cards issued in the country so far, Prof Attafuah said as of September 15, 2022, a total of 17,163,081 people had been enrolled onto the NIA system, with 16,627,326 cards printed, and 15,869,026 cards issued. The Executive Secretary said the Authority had introduced a robust system to verify all cards of Ghanaians for the purpose of transacting businesses with banks and to verify non-citizens who would use the card to apply for or renew their residence permit, open or run a bank account in the country. On the celebration of the International Identity Day, Prof Attafuah asked African countries to heighten efforts to ensure that the citizenry had legal identity to foster social, economic and political inclusion. He said the country would leave no chance in ensuring that the Ghana card became “the single source of proof,” noting that the Authority, since January 2021, introduced a verification system, which made banks authenticate individuals who used the card for various transactions. “With this verification system, if you go to the bank with or without your Ghana card, with your fingerprint, the bank is able to verify your identity as part of KYC (Know Your Customer) and give you a service,” Prof Attafuah noted. The Executive Secretary hinted that NIA would from November 2022 start the registration of Ghanaians abroad and embark on an exercise to register children in the country between the ages of four to 15 in December 2022. Meanwhile, registration for the card for refugees would start next week, Prof Attafuah said. He said continuous registration would also be carried out in all 16 designated regional and all 275 district offices of NIA. Source: GNA

Governor Newsom Signs Healthy And Safety Setbacks, Carbon Capture And Other Climate Bills – Daily Kos https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/governor-newsom-signs-healthy-and-safety-setbacks-carbon-capture-and-other-climate-bills-daily-kos/ VALLEJO, CA – With multiple oil refineries of the East Bay’s “Refinery Corridor” looming in the distance,” California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law a bill that will require 3,200-foot setbacks between oil and gas drilling and homes, schools and other sensitive receptors in California. The Governor signed the legislation, SB 1137, as part of a package of climate bills alongside legislative leaders at the USDA Forest Service Region Headquarters at Mare Island, a facility powered by clean energy that also feeds the grid. Standing in front of the new solar array at the headquarters, Newsom made a “historic commitment to end California’s dark legacy of urban oil extraction that overwhelmingly impacts non-white and low-income communities,” reported Voices in Solidarity Against Oil in Neighborhoods (VISION), the coalition of environmental justice groups that campaigned for the legislation, in a statement.  The bill was part of what the Governor described as a “ sweeping package of legislation to cut pollution, protect Californians from big polluters, and accelerate the state’s transition to clean energy.”  “This month has been a wake-up call for all of us that later is too late to act on climate change. California isn’t waiting any more,” said Governor Newsom. “Together with the Legislature, California is taking the most aggressive action on climate our nation has ever seen. We’re cleaning the air we breathe, holding the big polluters accountable, and ushering in a new era for clean energy. That’s climate action done the California Way – and we’re not only doubling down, we’re just getting started.”    Newsom said he teamed up with legislative leaders this session to advance a climate package to “achieve carbon neutrality no later than 2045 and 90% clean energy by 2035, establish new setback measures protecting communities from oil drilling, capture carbon pollution from the air, advance nature-based solutions, and more.” Environmental justice and climate groups applauded the Governor’s signing of SB 1137 for mandating the most extensive health and safety setbacks in the nation — after decades of California requiring no buffer zones around oil and gas wells. At the same time, Food and Water Watch and other organizations condemned the passage of one of the bills in the package, SB 905, that fast tracks the controversial practice of “carbon capture. “ “A history of housing discrimination and redlining in the state made neighborhood oil drilling one of the clearest examples of environmental racism in California,” the VISION Coalition said in a statement addressing the passage of SB 1137.  “This new law will not only prohibit new drilling within the setback zone but will apply stringent pollution controls to operators and further prohibit them from reworking existing wells–essentially phasing out all operations within the setback zone over the coming years.” VISION said the “overwhelming body of evidence” shows that proximity to industrial fossil fuel operations increases exposure to known carcinogens and endocrine disruptors, fine and ultra-fine particulate matter that can shorten life expectancy, cause birth complications and increase risks for cancer, asthma and other respiratory illnesses.  Over the last decade, frontline communities have led the movement calling on local and state legislators to establish a buffer zone between toxic oil wells and their homes, schools, parks and workplaces, according to the coalition, according to VISION.   “Four years ago, the small city of Arvin in Kern County made history passing the state’s first local setback ordinance of 300ft.,” said Nayamin Martinez, Executive Director, Central California Environmental Justice Network. “Today, the same communities that fought for Arvin’s protective setbacks carried the fight to the finish line and celebrated the passage of 3,200ft setbacks statewide. While we know this distance is just the bare minimum needed to protect our communities, we are proud of our environmental justice communities that paved the way for this historic victory.” “California’s politicians have finally listened. We’re glad the legislature and the Governor have at last taken necessary action for setbacks,” said Dr. Catherine Garoupa White, Executive Director, Central Valley Air Quality Coalition. “Today’s monumental win belongs to frontline communities who’ve been fighting for setbacks for years, and it’s a big indicator that the tide is turning on Big Oil in Sacramento. In October 2021, Gov. Newsom announced that the Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM), the state’s oil and gas regulator, had released a proposed regulation that would prohibit new wells and facilities within 3,200 feet of communities. “Environmental justice advocates and frontline community members were deeply engaged in the agency’s rulemaking process for years but doubtful that the troubled regulator, with a history of financial ties to the fossil fuel industry, would move at the speed required to address the ongoing threat of neighborhood drilling,” VISION stated. “But an end-of-session proposal by Gov. Newsom to include setbacks in a suite of climate priorities led Sens. Lena Gonzalez (D-Long Beach) and Monique Limón (D-Santa Barbara) to carry SB 1137 across the finish line this legislative session. Although two similar bills had previously died in the legislature, senate and assembly champions worked hard to secure the votes this round and Gov. Newsom also visited the Capitol speaking to Dems in both chambers with a plea for setbacks,” the coalition continued. “This legislation marks a true turning point in California’s history and in our nation’s fight against climate change and decade’s worth of environmental injustices faced by our frontline communities. Our planet is warming, and that is simply an undeniable truth; but with bold actions like SB 1137 we can still catch up in the race to stop this crisis,” said Senator Lena Gonzalez (D-Long Beach). “With the combined stress of global warming and proximity to oil and gas production wells, it is our frontline communities that carry the heaviest burden with their already increased risk of asthma, heart disease and cancer. That is the reality and the severity of the public health challenges that pollution-burdened communities face daily across our state, and SB 1137 will help us change that. This is only the beginning—I believe SB 1137 will be a catalyst for more meaningful climate action in the near future.: The group said the effects of climate change “have never been more apparent” across California with deadly heat, drought and extreme fires threatening a livable future in the state. “Today’s historic bill signing will personally impact the lives of 3 million Californians living within 3,200 feet of toxic oil operations. It also marks a decisive step toward phasing out the worst and dirtiest fossil fuels on the path to the Governor’s goal of a complete phase out of in-state fossil fuel operations. Alongside the unprecedented investments in regional economic development to create good, sustainable, family supporting union jobs, as well as programs targeted to support displaced oil workers, California takes a definitive step toward a future beyond oil,” VISION remarked. Dan Ress, Staff Attorney, Center on Race, Poverty and the Environment, commented, “Finally, after years and years of environmental justice communities fighting for comprehensive public health setbacks, the legislature and the Governor are taking action,” said”Today, California is committing in statute to phase out the scourge of neighborhood drilling in our communities. The signing of SB 1137 into law is not only historic–it will save lives.” “The signing of SB 1137 is a historic moment not just in California history, but for the incredible visionary leadership of the environmental justice movement worldwide,” concluded Kobi Naseck, Coalition Coordinator, Voices in Solidarity Against Oil in Neighborhoods. “By signing the bill into law, the Governor is beginning to put an end to the harm that Big Oil has inflicted on our state’s frontline communities for decades. VISIÓN is grateful for the Governor’s signature, and for the support of our advocates in the legislature, Senator Gonzalez and Senator Limón, who carried this bill and the multi-year campaign behind it over the finish line.” While calling the signing of AB 1137 into law today as  “unquestionably historic and necessary,” Food and Water Watch California slammed the carbon capture bill, SB 905, as “unconscionable.” “After congressional investigations revealed major fossil fuel companies have used carbon capture to ensure continued oil and gas production, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law a bill fast-tracking the practice as part of his climate package,” the group said in a statement. “SB 905 would officially establish a carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) program for California and streamline the permitting process for applicants. Environmental advocates have criticized carbon capture technology as expensive, unproven and a lifeline to the fossil fuel industry. In a memo released Thursday to the House Oversight Committee, Representatives Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) and Ro Khanna (D-CA) outlined the documented memos and conversations of industry giants like BP pinning their hopes on carbon capture “to enable the full use of fossil fuels across the energy transition and beyond.” The memo also documents the intentionally false statements made by fossil fuel interests to present CCS technology as more reliable and successful than it currently is. “It looks like Newsom fell for Big Oil’s big lies,” said Food & Water Watch California Director Chirag G....

He threw for 212 yards last week in the 52-0 win over Akron, completing 18 of 28 passes. For the season, Thorne has been solid, completing 57.7% of his passes on 30 of 52 attempts for 445 yards and four scores. He has been picked off three times. In three season at Michigan State, he has completed 313 of 526 passes (59.5%) for 4,267 yards and 34 touchdowns. He has tossed 16 interceptions. Also leading the way is former Wisconsin Badger running back Jalen Berger. In the season opener, he rushed for a career-high 120 yards and one TD vs. Western Michigan. Last week, he followed that up with a career-high three scores to go along with 107 yards against Akron. Berger is averaging 113.5 yards per game, fifth-best in the Big Ten and 11th nationally. He carried 84 times for 389 yards (4.6 average) and three TDs in two seasons with Wisconsin. Why Washington can cover Despite that, the Spartans are not a lock to cover the Michigan State vs. Washington spread. That’s because the Huskies are led by a veteran quarterback in junior Michael Penix Jr., who is a transfer from Indiana. Penix was 26 of 39 for 345 yards and four touchdowns in his Washington debut against Kent State. The four touchdowns are tied for seventh in single-game school history. He was 20 of 27 for 337 yards and two touchdowns against Portland State. He joined the Washington roster this past spring after playing at Indiana from 2018 to 2021, where he played in a total of 20 games over four seasons. Another transfer who is a big part of the Huskies offense is graduate student and running back Wayne Taulapapa. He carried 11 times for 57 yards and a touchdown in a start vs. Kent State. He had 12 carries for 94 yards and a touchdown against Portland State. He joined Washington this past summer after having spent four seasons at Virginia, where he played in 40 games, including 27 starts. He rushed for 1,192 yards and 19 touchdowns on 266 career carries. The money is awarded to promising Black tech ventures, which historically have had difficulty accessing capital.  According to a report by Crunchbase, in 2020, U.S. companies raised nearly $150 billion dollars in venture capital, but Black startup founders received less than 1% of that total. Both startups plan to use the money in part to bring in more technology development talent to help them grow. “It’s going to allow us to double down on the engineering that’s required to stay relevant. We can’t afford at any moment for our website to go down,” said Eventnoire’s chief marketing officer Joshua Mercer. “It’s also going to allow us to do more marketing and more branding that’s needed to spread the word about our platform and what we’re seeking to accomplish.” “Honestly, it’s been really hard to raise money and all of our competitors are venture backed – and this company is run by myself and my husband,” said Buoy Pricing co-founder Candice Speicher. “This money is going to continue our mission of building technology that’s really helpful for users.” Mercer says having targeted funding for Black startups is crucial to creating a more equitable tech environment. “We’re always on the consumer side, and never on the decision side,” he said. “So to have people who look like you, it’s going to be more intention and more thought, and less manipulation when it comes to technology.”

Metaverse Markets And Business Predictions In The Industry Report 2022 By GamesPad | Bitcoinist.com – Bitcoinist https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/metaverse-markets-and-business-predictions-in-the-industry-report-2022-by-gamespad-bitcoinist-com-bitcoinist/ Road Town / British Virgin Islands – Gaming, NFT and Metaverse ecosystem GamesPad has released Metaverse: Emerging Business Opportunities, a comprehensive research paper that explores how the metaverse will influence crucial business sectors, examines the opportunities presented by this new concept, and offers strategies for capitalizing on these opportunities. GamesPad believes that the metaverse will transform all aspects of our lives, starting with the way we socialize to how we work, shop, and even consume content. In the report, GamesPad lists the new markets that emerge through the evolution of the metaverse and advises entrepreneurs, thought leaders, and business owners on the importance of establishing a metaverse business strategy. In this article, we will explore the predictions and insights about the future of business in the metaverse by contributors to the Metaverse Industry Report 2022 by GamesPad. The Future of Business in The Metaverse The metaverse economy is expected to reach up to $13 trillion in value by 2030. Many mainstream big-name companies, especially tech giants, have already started exploring and heavily investing in the metaverse, which highlights the potential possibilities businesses have within a broad number of current business sectors. In the research paper, Co-Founder of  GamesPad and BullPerks Constantin Kogan commented: “The importance of the metaverse is twofold. First, its decentralized nature is revolutionary in shifting the power away from a single corporate entity and handing it back to the people. The second is connection. A shared community where anyone has access to be whoever they want to be. This is important because empowered people who feel supported by the community can change the world.” Anastasia Drinevskaya, Cointelegraph Communications CEO & Creative Director, added: “Innovation in technology is the key ingredient in the ways metaverse opportunities will be presented to business leaders. As the metaverse continues to evolve, strategies will become more clear. In a boundless virtual world that allows users to explore and interact, the metaverse will be powered by an independent virtual economy utilizing blockchain and NFTs.” In the report, GamesPad notes that businesses of all kinds can have their share of the metaverse, though they need to develop a metaverse business strategy in the early stages to maximize its impact. Fashion Fashion brands will be playing a crucial role in shaping the emerging stages of the metaverse. Digital self-expression will become the primary way for people to express their personality, mood, and style in the metaverse, which will bring the need for an entirely new sector focused on branded avatar skins and other digital clothing. However, metaverse fashion is not limited to that and embraces more opportunities. Wahid Chammas, Chairman & Co-Founder of Faith Tribe, Co-Owner of Faith Connexion, and Founder & CIO of TyreGate Capital, commented: “Consumers today are demanding immersive experiences, where they can express identity through fashion in both their physical and digital realms. As we like to say at Faith, digital fashion is not limited to clothing for avatars. It’s a growing fashion subculture that includes the digital design and modeling of real-world clothing, the uploading of designs for real and digital clothing onto the blockchain (so these designs can be sold as NFTs) and even digital clothes rendered onto real people.” Moreover, the metaverse serves as a perfect environment for creativity and self-expression for all users, particularly for content creators, artists, and fashion designers. “The creative freedom that comes with digital design is a profound utility for fashion designers and artists of all kinds. Our evolving digital world has changed the ways that the masses interact with fashion brands and clothing in general. Physical garments are no longer the most important element. – said A.Bahadir Yener, Founder of Metawear. – Fashion extends beyond fabric and fashion designers are harnessing the creative liberties of digital design to reignite a spark within consumers to discover their own digital and physical identities. Digital fashion has the potential to be both inspirational and accessible in ways the physical world doesn’t provide.” – he added. E-Commerce Travis Wu, Founder of Highstreet, about e-Commerce opportunities for brands in the metaverse: “Inhabitants of the metaverse already spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on virtual assets, whether its character skins or weapons, gamers understand the emotional payoff of customizing digital avatars. What Web3 does is that it decentralizes these assets from the studio’s game servers and gives true ownership of them to players, allowing them to then be able to resell digital assets to their peers. For brands, this not only creates a brand new market for distribution, but unlocks the fastest growing demographic to their sales” Real estate As the limits of real-world geography fade, virtual real estate encompasses opportunities in digital landscapes, virtual gaming, and entertainment. GamesPad believes investing in a single location in the metaverse has the potential to reach a larger share of customers than most physical locations. Currently, the metaverse’s expansion relies heavily on digital real estate trading and leasing. Eran Elhanani, Co-Founder of  GamesPad and BullPerks, said: “We all know from the traditional real estate world that when supply is limited and demand is high then prices go up as well as it’s all about location, location, location. The same is true for the Metaverse. While there might be multiple digital worlds/Metaverses then just like countries and cities there will be some more successful and more attractive than others and it will be about buying lands in those where it’s also limited.” Gaming Gaming and entertainment platforms will be at the forefront of metaverse development. Players have globally shown a preference for games that offer immersive experiences with 3D graphics and VR-enabled titles, putting the already booming GameFi industry in a unique position to benefit from the metaverse. “Game developers are focusing more on economic incentives within gameplay as the GameFi model is rapidly becoming the most important feature for metaverse gaming projects. Monetizing games is keeping players interested and invested, and decentralized finance (DeFi) is making it all possible. As we see more gaming projects expand features to be more immersive and utilize technology like AR and VR, we will also notice that metaverse ready games will have incentive structures that allow players to earn real-world income.” – Phillip Devine, CEO of CryptoBlades Kingdoms. Entertainment In the past year, we have seen exciting entertainment endeavors such as Snoop Dogg and Deadmau5 hosting full-fledged virtual concerts. GamesPad believes that the metaverse will make concerts and other virtual events limitless and borderless, allowing a global audience to participate and enjoy exhibitions. Brian Hazan, Co-Founder and Chief Revenue Officer at THE HUSL, commented: “Entertainment industry players might have the most lucrative opportunities in the metaverse. This emerging virtual space is garnering immense interest from younger demographics, a social cohort that is the most excited about new types of entertainment. This is why gaming, mass media, and even event management companies are joining the metaverse, trying to create a virtual replica of their real-world services to capitalize on the opportunity and expand their audience reach.” Marketing The metaverse can make digital marketing even more exciting because of the implied fully immersive experiences, allowing companies to engage with customers at a whole new level. Some of the strategies for metaverse marketing include in-metaverse ads, virtual influencers, metaverse events, and metaverse commerce. Dana Kachan, CMO at GamesPad and BullPerks, commented about marketing in the metaverse: “The metaverse is the next big thing in digital marketing. Marketers have always been striving to build more immersive and exciting brand experiences. Today there is likely no better place for this than the metaverse. From virtual showrooms to test drives to online shopping – in the metaverse, all this will acquire a new form and skyrocket customer engagement. Imagine a Ferrari test drive on the virtual streets of Los Angeles, Bangkok, or any other location in the world.” Bottomline The metaverse can help all businesses engage with customers, expand brand awareness, and identify new revenue streams. Amazon Makes The Cheapest Kindle Even Better – WIRED https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/amazon-makes-the-cheapest-kindle-even-better-wired/ The differences between Amazon’s Kindle e-readers used to be stark. The cheapest base model had paltry storage, bitsy battery life, and a slow, low-resolution screen. Meanwhile, the extravagant Kindle Oasis luxuriated in its sleek aluminum chassis, fully adjustable lighting, big battery, and physical buttons for turning pages. But the models have slowly begun to blend together, with the less expensive Kindles adopting premium features previously only found in the Oasis. The mid-tier Paperwhite got some sprucing up in 2021, when Amazon added adjustable lighting and a USB-C port. (It’s still WIRED’s pick for best e-reader.) At last, Amazon is juicing up the base-model Kindle as well. The new Kindle gets an upgraded display—a 300-ppi-resolution screen versus the previous Kindle’s 197 ppi. Storage is doubled to 16 GB. The new Kindle also—finally!—features a USB-C port like the newest Paperwhite models. It charges in as little as two hours over USB-C. Unfortunately, the prices have started to converge too. The new base-model Kindle costs $100, which is 10 bucks more than the previous version. Spend another $20 and you get a version that doesn’t bombard you with ads on the lock screen. If you’re in the market for an e-reader, check out WIRED’s guide to the best Kindles and the best ebook readers overall. Here’s some more news from the world of consumer technology. Alexa Speaks Brand The worst thing about searching for something on Google is all the ads that show up at the top of the page. Well, now Amazon is planning something like that for its Echo smart speakers. In a blog post with the not-at-all-dystopian title “Alexa Can Now Help Brands Answer Customer Questions,” Amazon laid out a new business strategy that will allow brands to provide answers to user questions that might relate to the products the brand wants to sell. Amazon gave an example of asking Alexa how to remove pet hair from the carpet. Such a query could cause a brand-backed response to spring forth, offering to send you links to Amazon pages selling the brand’s products. In Amazon’s brand registry system, sellers will be able to view common user questions and attach their branded answers to them. Amazon says the questions and branded answers will be reviewed by content moderators before they can be used by Alexa. Amazon insists these are not ads and that brands won’t be able to pay to submit answers. The company also says branded answers will be attributed to the brand that answered them, but it didn’t elaborate on what form that disclosure would take. The company plans to test the feature starting in October, then roll it out across the US after that. TikTok Wants to BeReal Every app is trying to be TikTok, but sometimes the viral video-sharing app has to play a bit of catch-up itself. If you are hip and cool (read: young), then surely you know about BeReal. The popular app prompts users with a notification at a random time every day that reads “Time to BeReal.” Users then have two minutes to snap a photo that captures images from both the front and back cameras. The results are quick and candid; the point of catching people unawares is to encourage more “authentic” moments than the carefully staged shots you see on platforms like Instagram.

How To Earn Passive Crypto Income In A Bear Market? Cointelegraph
How To Earn Passive Crypto Income In A Bear Market? Cointelegraph
How To Earn Passive Crypto Income In A Bear Market? – Cointelegraph https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/how-to-earn-passive-crypto-income-in-a-bear-market-cointelegraph/ The majority of new investors are in the middle of their first crypto winter, during which most digital assets have depreciated by more than 70% from their November 2021 highs. While a bear market is tough for everyone, it can be especially challenging for those who are new to the space and don’t have much experience dealing with market volatility. That said, there are still opportunities to earn passive income during a bear market — crypto traders just have to know where to look. In this article, we will look at how Wall Street traders persevere and what simple things can be done to make money. Is it time to buy more assets? What are some of the easiest ways to generate cash in a recession? Are there any investment techniques that work during bear markets? What assets to invest in while Bitcoin (BTC) is in a bear market in 2022? What is a bear market? In traditional markets, a bear market is described as any time stock prices fall by more than 20% from a previous high. In cryptocurrency, a bear market refers to an extended period of time where prices fall significantly and market confidence plummets. How long do crypto winters last? While there is no set time period, most people agree that a bear market in cryptocurrency lasts for at least three months. The current crypto winter began in November of 2021 and, as of this writing, shows no signs of abating. So, how long will this bear market last? This is impossible to say for certain, but based on past trends, it could take a while. The last bear market in cryptocurrency lasted over two years, from 2017 to late 2020. If the current bear market follows a similar timeline, we might be in for a long winter. More often than not, during a bear market, every asset falls in value with only very brief deviations. Later on, investors spot assets that are selling at bargain prices and purchase them, ending the bear markets for good. Bear markets are defined by low investor confidence and pessimism. During a bear market, investors tend to ignore any positive news and sell rapidly to drive asset prices down. The cryptocurrency market has already seen three bull markets since Bitcoin’s inception in 2009 and is currently experiencing its third bear market, having declined by almost 70% from its all-time high. Can you predict a crypto bear market? Predicting a bear market is nearly impossible, and most investors do not anticipate one until they have lost at least 5% of the value of their investment portfolio. How to survive a crypto bear market? Given the current market conditions of continued volatility and uneasiness about the future, it’s okay to feel overwhelmed as an investor. It can be difficult to make logical decisions or take any required actions when your portfolio is continuously taking a hit. When the crypto market becomes bearish, nearly all assets in the market begin to fall, even if they report positive news or developments. The key to surviving a bear market is to have a long-term vision and focus on the project’s fundamentals rather than its current price. Although bear markets typically result in increased prices, many portfolios that were harmed by bear markets may take longer to recover. Some, on the other hand, never return. A bear market is a good example of how capital preservation is important in making investments. However, as Warren Buffett noted, “you must be greedy when others are fearful” in the long run. As a result, there are advantages to the bear market. There are a number of platforms in the cryptocurrency industry that help earn passive income, which can help investors take advantage of the bear market, as explained in the below sections.  Benefits of a crypto bear market Although a bear market can be discouraging for investors, it actually has some benefits. Here are some of the advantages of a crypto bear market: Buy low, sell high: When the price of something is falling, smart investors know that it’s a great time to acquire. They take advantage of the reduced prices by acquiring assets and selling them when the market rebounds and prices rise again. Although it may be difficult to find assets that have not been impacted by the market crash, there are still some digital assets that are selling at a discount. Investors learn to master their emotions: One of the most important lessons to take away from a bear market is how to manage your emotions while trading. It can be difficult not to panic when the value of assets is dropping, but it is crucial to remember that bear markets are temporary and prices will eventually rebound. Enables disciplined and consistent investors: A bear market separates the long-term, disciplined investors from those who are in it for the quick buck. Those who are able to weather the storm and continue to invest during a bear market are usually the ones who come out ahead in the end. Investors can gauge their risk resistance: A bear market is an opportunity for investors to test their risk tolerance. Those who sell all of their assets during a crash may realize that they are not as comfortable with risk as they thought. On the other hand, those who continue to invest may find that they are more tolerant of risk than they previously thought. Ways to make passive income in a crypto bear market Although it may be difficult to locate digital assets that have not been harmed by the market downturn, there are still a few methods to generate passive income in a bear market. The reverse of the adage is that there are still plenty of possibilities with a 100% Annual percentage rate (APR) and even more. Below are a few methods of generating passive income in a bear market: Staking Bear markets are a reminder of the importance of holding tokens to generate passive income. Staking can be a great way to generate income, as well as increase your position in a project. Staking is the process of locking your coins on a particular platform to gain interest. Most platforms provide two options: flexible staking (withdraw at any time) or fixed staking (where you commit your assets for a set period, like one month or more). Tokens can be staked on centralized platforms such as Binance, Crypto.com, Kucoin or Bybit. In addition to that, there are many decentralized exchanges (DEXs) available such as Uniswap, Balancer and Curve, where investors can provide liquidity and earn a share of the trading fees. Crypto trading Trading cryptocurrency during a bear market can be a good opportunity to buy at a discount and sell when prices rebound. Earning passive trading can be a great way to offset any losses during a bear market. Although finding profitable trades may be more difficult, those who are able to capitalize on market conditions may earn a significant amount of money. How do crypto traders make money in a bear market? Investors can trade cryptocurrencies on a number of different exchanges, including centralized ones like Binance and Kraken or DEXs like Uniswap and dYdX2. There are also a number of social trading platforms, such as eToro and Robinhood, that can help investors get started in the market. Social trading platforms provide a way to learn from other investors and develop strategies for trading during a bear market. Mining Mining is another way to generate passive income in a bear market. Although the rewards may be lower than in a bull market, mining can still be a profitable endeavor. Cryptocurrency miners can either go it alone or join a mining pool. When you solo mine, you’re trying to solve the next block by yourself. Pool mining is when a group of miners work together to find the solution faster and then share rewards based on each person’s hashing power contribution. Affiliate marketing Affiliate marketing is a form of business in which a person promotes a product or service and gets paid if someone buys the item as a result of their advertising. This may be achieved through various platforms, including social media, blogs and email lists. Affiliate marketing in the cryptocurrency space is another way to generate passive income during market downturns. Many projects offer high commission rates and some even pay out rewards in the project’s native token. Airdrops Airdrops have become a popular way to generate passive income in down market conditions. Airdrops are tokens that projects give away for free to promote their project or increase awareness. Investors can join airdrops on websites like Airdrop Alert, CoinMarketCap and Earn Crypto. It’s critical to remain vigilant against fraud since there are several fraudulent airdrops distributed in order to acquire people’s private keys. Only sign up for airdrops from reliable providers and conduct due diligence before giving any personal information. Dollar-cost average One way to make passive income is to dollar-cost average your investments. This means buying a fixed amount of an asset on a regular schedule, regardless of the price. Buying into an asset at different prices can mitigate the risk of buying in at the top and losing all. This approach may be used to invest in initial coin offerings (ICOs), buy altcoins or even acquire Bitcoin. In the long run, the average price of the digital asset will even out, and investors have a good chance of making a profit when the bull market returns. Dollar cost averaging (DCA) offers numerous advantages for investors who use tax-advantaged savings vehicles on a regular basis. Contribution and employer match contributions account for about two-thirds of the amount, while investment profits make up the remaining one-third. This indicates that many 401(k) contributors may quickly replenish their accounts following bear markets. Stablecoin investment strategies Stablecoins are digital assets that are pegged to a stable asset, su...

Ukraine Wants More Powerful Weapons. Biden Is Not So Sure. – The New York Times https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/ukraine-wants-more-powerful-weapons-biden-is-not-so-sure-the-new-york-times/ President Biden wants to avoid provoking Russia at a moment when American officials fear Vladimir V. Putin could escalate the war to compensate for recent losses. Send any friend a story As a subscriber, you have 10 gift articles to give each month. Anyone can read what you share. While supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression, President Biden has tried to prevent the conflict from widening. Credit…Doug Mills/The New York Times Sept. 17, 2022Updated 5:46 p.m. ET WASHINGTON — Flush with success in northeast Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky is pressing President Biden for a new and more powerful weapon: a missile system with a range of 190 miles, which could reach far into Russian territory. Mr. Zelensky insists to U.S. officials that he has no intention of striking Russian cities or aiming at civilian targets, even though President Vladimir V. Putin’s forces have hit apartment blocks, theaters and hospitals in Ukraine throughout the war. The weapon, Mr. Zelensky says, is critical to launching a wider counteroffensive, perhaps early next year. Mr. Biden is resisting, in part because he is convinced that over the past seven months, he has successfully signaled to Mr. Putin that he does not want a broader war with the Russians — he just wants them to get out of Ukraine. A shipment of long-range guided missiles, which could also give Ukraine new options for striking Crimea, the territory Russia annexed in 2014, would likely be seen by Moscow as a major provocation, Mr. Biden has concluded. “We’re trying to avoid World War III,” Mr. Biden often reminds his aides, echoing a statement he has made publicly as well. Senior aides to the president also say that when Mr. Biden asked the Pentagon in recent weeks how much the longer-range missile systems would help Ukrainian forces during the next stage of the war, he was told the benefits would be minimal. That led him to conclude, they said, that it was not worth the risk. The argument over the Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, comes at a critical moment, when officials in the White House, the State Department, the Pentagon and American intelligence agencies appear more concerned than ever that Mr. Putin could escalate the war to compensate for his humiliating retreat. They do not know what form that escalation might take. But many of the options they are preparing for are bleak: more indiscriminate bombardment of Ukrainian cities, a campaign to kill senior Ukrainian leaders, or an attack on supply hubs outside Ukraine — located in NATO countries like Poland and Romania — that are channeling extraordinary quantities of arms, ammunition and military equipment into the country. This account of the administration’s effort to control escalation in the war is based on conversations with more than a dozen senior American officials as they struggle to calibrate the next steps — hoping to build on Ukraine’s advances without triggering a wider conflict. It comes as the Ukrainians have gained momentum and the Russians, for now, are still in disarray. American officials believe they have, so far, succeeded at “boiling the frog” — increasing their military, intelligence and economic assistance to Ukraine step by step, without provoking Moscow into large-scale retaliation with any major single move. Image A Ukrainian soldier carrying a U.S.-made Stinger missile. The United States has been steadily sending military, intelligence and economic assistance to Ukraine. Credit…David Guttenfelder for The New York Times They say that Mr. Putin almost certainly would have pushed back hard if Washington had, at the outset of the war, provided Ukraine with the kind of support it is getting now, such as intelligence that has allowed Ukraine to kill Russian generals and target arms depots, tanks and Russian air defenses with precision-guided rocket attacks. Instead, the Americans believe their incremental strategy, and refusal to give Ukraine advanced weapons or aircraft that could reach deep into Russia, has put guardrails on the conflict. But Mr. Putin has grown increasingly frustrated as his military struggles. “We are, indeed, responding rather restrainedly, but that’s for the time being,” Mr. Putin said on Friday, after attending a regional summit in Uzbekistan. “If the situation continues to develop in this way, the answer will be more serious.” He claimed that Ukraine was trying to carry out “terrorist acts” in Russia, and described recent Russian cruise missile attacks against Ukrainian infrastructure as “warning strikes.” The same day, speaking at an intelligence conference in Washington, the deputy director of the C.I.A., David S. Cohen, said Mr. Putin would be asking his military leaders “what has happened, why it is happening, what can we do to push back and to retain our position.” “I don’t think we should underestimate Putin’s adherence to his original objective, which was to control Ukraine,” Mr. Cohen said. He added: “We should not underestimate his risk appetite.” Colin H. Kahl, under secretary of defense for policy, said in a statement to The New York Times on Friday that “Ukraine’s success on the battlefield could cause Russia to feel backed into a corner, and that is something we must remain mindful of.” But he said that while the United States is committed to providing Ukraine with the equipment it needs to counter Russian aggression, the Pentagon has assessed that Ukraine does not need the ATACMS for “targets that are directly relevant to the current fight.” On Capitol Hill, Democrats and Republicans have expressed support for preventing the war in Ukraine from spilling into a wider conflict. But many lawmakers said the Biden administration was being overly cautious in denying Ukraine additional advanced weaponry. Ukraine has called for much greater Western assistance, like fighter jets, tanks, and long-range missiles. Although Mr. Zelensky has asked for ATACMS, the Pentagon has instead provided thousands of satellite-guided rockets and 16 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System launchers, or HIMARS, to fire them. Those rockets have struck more than 400 Russian ammunition depots, command posts and radars. The HIMARS can carry six guided rockets at a time, each of which can strike targets nearly 50 miles away — a range that Pentagon officials say covers the vast majority of Ukraine’s intended targets. By comparison, a HIMARS launcher can carry only one of the larger ATACMS missiles at a time before needing to reload. Critics say the military aid that the West has provided until now has been enough for Ukraine to stay in the fight but not to win. Representative Jason Crow, a Colorado Democrat who serves on both the House intelligence and armed services committees, said the United States should send ATACMS to Ukraine. “Sure, escalation remains a concern, and we have to be mindful of that threat,” said Mr. Crow, a former Army Ranger. “But I don’t think providing ATACMS is substantively escalatory. We need to provide what Ukraine needs to win.” An increased flow of arms and advice now, said some former officials, is vital to help the Ukrainians capitalize on the counter offensive and survive the coming winter. “We have a window of opportunity,” said Evelyn Farkas, the executive director of the McCain Institute and a former senior defense official during the Obama administration, speaking at an intelligence and security summit in Washington. “I worry that if we don’t provide the Ukrainians with the weapons they need to push back further, get more territory, they will not be strong enough at the negotiating table and the Russians may regroup.” Some American officials express concern that the most dangerous moments are yet to come, even as Mr. Putin has avoided escalating the war in ways that have, at times, baffled Western officials. He has made only limited attempts to destroy critical infrastructure or to target Ukrainian government buildings. He has not attacked the supply hubs outside Ukraine. While he has directed low-level cyberattacks against Ukrainian targets every week, they have been relatively unsophisticated, especially when compared to capabilities that Russia has shown it has, including in the SolarWinds attack on American government and commercial systems that was discovered just before Mr. Biden took office. Some officials have expressed concern Mr. Putin could detonate a tactical nuclear weapon — perhaps in a demonstration blast over the Black Sea or Arctic Ocean, or in Ukrainian territory. But there is no evidence that he is moving those weapons, officials say, or preparing such a strike. One senior intelligence official said there was a debate underway inside American intelligence agencies over whether Mr. Putin believes such a step would risk Russia’s alienation from the countries it needs most — especially China — or whether he is holding the option in reserve. Mr. Biden addressed the issue directly in an interview with CBS for “60 Minutes,” scheduled for broadcast on Sunday, when he warned that turning to nuclear or other unconventional weapons would “change the face of war unlike anything since World War II,’’ an apparent reference to the American use of nuclear weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. “They’ll become more of a pariah in the world than they ever have been,’’ Mr. Biden said, in an excerpt released by CBS. “And depending on the extent of what they do will determine what response would occur.” That last statement appeared to refer to discussion inside the American defense community about how to respond to a demonstration blast — more akin to a nuclear test, though one conducted to warn of potential escalation — versus a strike on a populated part of Ukraine. Mr. Putin, despite his early setbacks, appeare...

Colorado Plane Crash: Three People Killed After Midair Collision The Washington Post
Colorado Plane Crash: Three People Killed After Midair Collision – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/colorado-plane-crash-three-people-killed-after-midair-collision-the-washington-post/ Two planes crashed midair in Colorado on Saturday, killing three people, authorities say. Joshua Bonafede, a Boulder County sheriff’s deputy, said two planes collided on Saturday morning. One plane was found about 30 miles northwest of downtown Denver. According to NBC affiliate 9 News, the other plane was found a few blocks away. At about 8:50 a.m. local time, a single-engine Cessna 172 and a second aircraft collided and crashed near Vance Brand Airport in Longmont, a spokesperson with the Federal Aviation Administration told The Washington Post in an email. Two people were aboard the Cessna 172, the FAA spokesperson said. The National Transportation Safety Board said on Twitter that it is investigating a Cessna 172 collision with a plane it identified as a Sonex Xenos in Longmont, Colo. “The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate,” the FAA spokesperson said. “The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide additional updates.” The Cessna 172, also known as a Skyhawk, is one of the most popular airplanes in the world. It can seat four and is commonly used in flight instruction. Midair collisions are rare, with fewer than 30 occurring in the United States in a typical year. They almost always involve small private planes or military craft, not commercial jets, and are usually the result of human error such as miscommunication or navigation issues. Under federal aviation regulations, private pilots are required to “see and avoid” other aircraft flying in the space near them, and they must follow takeoff and landing procedures closely. Collisions are more likely in populous, heavily trafficked areas. Mountain View Fire Rescue, which serves the area, confirmed the three deaths and asked people to avoid the Niwot area, northeast of Boulder. Police had closed some roads in the area, Bonafede told The Washington Post. “It’s still very early in the investigation,” Bonafede said, adding that federal investigators were “on their way.” Praveena Somasundaram contributed to this report.

September Is Fall Prevention Awareness Month | Lifestyles | Washtimesherald.com – Washington Times Herald https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/september-is-fall-prevention-awareness-month-lifestyles-washtimesherald-com-washington-times-herald/ SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL FALL PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH: For the next several weeks, we will be addressing 10 Myths About Older Adults and Falls from the National Council on Aging. Many people think falls are a normal part of aging. The truth is, they’re not. Most falls can be prevented—and you have the power to reduce your risk. Exercising, managing your medications, having your vision checked, and making your living environment safer are all steps you can take to prevent a fall. To promote greater awareness and understanding here are 10 common myths—and the reality—about older adult falls. Myths 4-7: • Myth 4: As long as I stay at home, I can avoid falling. Reality: Over half of all falls take place at home. Inspect your home for fall risks. Fix simple but serious hazards such as clutter, throw rugs, and poor lighting. Make simple home modi cations, such as adding grab bars in the bathroom, a second handrail on stairs, and non-slip paint on outdoor steps. • Myth 5: Muscle strength and flexibility can’t be regained. Reality: While we do lose muscle as we age, exercise can partially restore strength and flexibility. It’s never too late to start an exercise program. Even if you’ve been a “couch potato” your whole life, becoming active now will benefit you in many ways—including protection from falls. • Myth 6: Taking medication doesn’t increase my risk of falling. Reality: Taking any medication may increase your risk of falling. Medications affect people in many different ways and can sometimes make you dizzy or sleepy. Becareful when starting a new medication. Talk to your health care provider about potential side effects or interactions of your medications. • Myth 7: I don’t need to get my vision checked every year. Reality: Vision is another key risk factor for falls. Aging is associated with some forms of vision loss that increase risk of falling and injury. People with vision problems are more than twice as likely to fall as those without visual impairment. Have your eyes checked at least once a year and update your eyeglasses. For those with low vision there are programs and assistive devices that can help. Ask your optometrist for a referral. Syracuse Vs. Purdue Updates: Live NCAA Football Game Scores, Results For Saturday – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/syracuse-vs-purdue-updates-live-ncaa-football-game-scores-results-for-saturday-cbs-sports/ After a two-game homestand, the Purdue Boilermakers will be on the road. They will take on the Syracuse Orange at noon ET on Saturday at Carrier Dome. These two teams are strolling into their game after big wins in their previous games. Purdue got themselves on the board against the Indiana State Sycamores last week, but Indiana State never followed suit. The Boilermakers were fully in charge, breezing past the Sycamores 56 to nothing at home. The matchup was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 35 to nothing. Purdue’s WR Charlie Jones was one of the most active players for the team, catching nine passes for three TDs and 133 yards. Purdue’s defense was a presence as well, as it got past Indiana State’s offensive line to sack the QB four times for a total loss of 21 yards. It was a group effort with five guys contributing. Meanwhile, you’re bound to get a positive result if you outscore your opponent every quarter, and that’s exactly how it played out for ‘Cuse last week. They blew past the Connecticut Huskies 48-14. With the Orange ahead 27-7 at the half, the contest was all but over already. Their QB Garrett Shrader was on fire, passing for three TDs and 287 yards on 24 attempts in addition to punching in two rushing touchdowns. Their wins bumped the Boilermakers to 1-1 and ‘Cuse to 2-0. After both teams made easy work of their previous opponents, one of them is set up to suffer a discouraging change of fortune. Season Leaders passing A. O’Connell567 YD, 5 TDS A.
