Chinese Astronauts Go On Spacewalk From New Station – Business News – Castanet.net https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/chinese-astronauts-go-on-spacewalk-from-new-station-business-news-castanet-net/ Spacewalk from new station The Associated Press – Sep 17, 2022 / 6:53 am | Story: 385616 Photo: The Canadian Press In this photo released by China’s Xinhua News Agency, a screen at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center in Beijing shows Chinese astronaut Cai Xuzhe exiting the station lab module Wentian to conduct extravehicular activities, also known as a spacewalk, Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022.  Two Chinese astronauts went on a spacewalk Saturday from a new space station that is due to be completed later this year. Cai Xuzhe and Chen Dong’s installed pumps, a handle to open the hatch door from outside in an emergency, and a foot-stop to fix an astronaut’s feet to a robotic arm, state media said. China is building its own space station after being excluded by the U.S. from the International Space Station because its military runs the country’s space program. American officials see a host of strategic challenges from China’s space ambitions, in an echo of the U.S.-Soviet rivalry that prompted the race to the moon in the 1960s. The latest spacewalk was the second during a six-month mission that will oversee the completion of the space station. The first of two laboratories, a 23-ton module, was added to the station in July and the other is to be sent up later this year. The third member of the crew, Liu Yang, supported the other two from inside during the spacewalk. Liu and Chen conducted the first spacewalk about two weeks ago. They will be joined by three more astronauts near the end of their mission in what will be the first time the station has six people on board. China became the third nation to send a person into space in 2003, following the former Soviet Union and the United States. It has sent rovers to the moon and Mars and brought lunar samples back to Earth.

How Social Media Is Literally Making Teens Mentally Ill New York Post
How Social Media Is Literally Making Teens Mentally Ill – New York Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/how-social-media-is-literally-making-teens-mentally-ill-new-york-post/ Suzie* was a typical 22-year-old recent college grad from the Midwest who was admitted into my mental health clinic in Austin with a variety of increasingly common psychiatric disorders: depression, self-harm (cutting her arms) and a Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) diagnosis. BPD is a serious personality disorder that has 50 times the suicide rate of the general population and is typified by black and white thinking, self-harm behavior, emotional volatility, impulsive behavior, shifting self-image and feelings of “emptiness.” While Susie did initially present with some of the classic BPD symptoms (feeling empty and suicidal), something didn’t add up. Unlike most BPD clients, she didn’t have any of the early red flags; she had good grades and many friends in high school with stable relationships and a stable home environment — and no history of mental illness in her family. A screenshot of a TikTok page with the hashtag “borderline personality disorder” (BPD). The rise of BPD influencers and posts has led to an epidemic of youths self-diagnosing themselves with the condition. During Suzie’s treatment, we discovered the real culprit: she’d been spending 12-15 hours a day on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube after becoming depressed when her friends went away to university while she stayed home and attended community college. Initially trying to better understand her depression, she started to follow BPD influencers and joined online BPD groups, where she said that she felt a sense of belonging. Slowly and unwittingly, she started emulating what she was learning about BPD online — like cutting her arms after watching videos of influencers declare that cutting helped them feel in control — or at least “feel something.” Suzie admitted that she never liked cutting herself but did it because she thought that it might eventually offer her relief. And starved for a true identity, she also stated that the cutting and irrational behaviors that the influencers engaged in “made them interesting and authentic,” which she found appealing. By the time she was ready to admit into treatment, she had lost all her friends and spent her days and nights alone and online being shaped by her newly found BPD community. We are living in the age of Digital Social Contagion, in which many illnesses are spread by social media rather than biological agents. Isolation from COVID has only made the problem worse. Shutterstock But something quite amazing happened while she was in treatment; she got better very quickly once all her devices and social media were removed. Within two weeks, she was calmer and less reactive; she made friends in the program; she no longer cut her arms and all thoughts of suicide evaporated. But if she really had BPD, she shouldn’t have been “cured” that quickly; clients with real BPD typically require many months or even years of treatment before seeing improvement. So what was really happening?    We’re living in the Age of Digital Social Contagions. It’s a time where certain illnesses aren’t spread by biological transmission, but by a digital infection that attacks the psychological immune system. Using algorithms that find and exploit our psychological vulnerabilities, we get sicker as Big Tech gets stronger. Lisa Littman, a physician-scientist at Brown University, has charted the correlation between social media exposure and the rise of previously rare disorders such as gender dysphoria. Twitter And make no mistake: we are getting sicker as a society, with record rates of depression, suicide, loneliness, overdoses, anxiety, addiction, emptiness, gender dysphoria and mass shootings that are disproportionately impacting teens and young adults, all made worse by the isolation and fear during COVID.  Beyond just the depression of living sedentary, isolated lives, we have the congressional testimony of Frances Haugen, The Facebook Whistleblower, who shared internal emails that showed Instagram’s own research indicated that their product increased suicidality in teenage girls and worsened their eating disorders. It seems that being exposed to a constant torrent of toxic content and comparing ourselves to the curated faux-glamor of vapid and shallow influencers isn’t good for the psyche — but it’s even worse than this much-researched and toxic “social comparison effect.” Corey Johnson is serving life in prison after becoming so warped by ISIS videos on social media that he stabbed a child to death. Palm Beach Gardens Police Department Johnson sliced open the throat of his victim, Jovanni A. Sierra (above), after the 13-year-old made comments he deemed “offensive to Islam.” Two other victims were stabbed during the melee at a 2018 sleepover. GoFundMe Followers and views are the coin of the realm in the social-media hierarchy, and extreme content is what attracts that priceless human commodity: our attention. That’s why it’s the most over-the-top content and influencers that attract followers like moths to a lethal digital flame. And it’s also why we’re seeing dramatic spikes in once-rare disorders like Tourette Syndrome, Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID, formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder) and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).  These disorders are now being injected into our collective consciousness via popular TikTok and Instagram “influencers” who’ve racked up hundreds of millions of views — and have left a wake of young followers like Suzie who, consciously or unconsciously, are indeed “influenced” as they emulate the psychiatric symptoms of their mentally unwell social media darlings.  This social-contagion group effect shouldn’t come as a shock; for thousands of years we’ve seen it shape human behavior; from donning tribal war paint, to smoking cigarettes, to following your favorite sports team or joining a political movement. We’re social animals hard-wired to mimic and emulate one another. The only difference now that social media has swallowed up our world is that the impact of toxic and digitally spread behaviors are greatly magnified as they go viral. A TikTok page focused on “multiple personality disorder” — yet another condition made popular by influencers whose posts are getting millions of views. Although we now know that social media is harmful to our mental health, we can’t seem to stop. Like a cirrhotic alcoholic, the health consequences be damned when you compulsively need another drink — or tweet. And the more of the digital toxin that we consume, the weaker and more compromised our psychological immune system becomes, making us even more vulnerable for further consumption, manipulation and behavior modification.  The Big Tech social media playbook is a simple three step process. Step 1: Create habituation. Use the most sophisticated algorithm-fueled behavior mod techniques to create dependency. Whistleblower Frances Haugen exposed internal Instagram research showing a link between the platform and increased bulimia and suicidal tendencies in teenage girls. Getty Images for Vox Media Step 2: Once addicted, the person’s psychological immune system begins to erode. As in any addiction, this is the realm of depression, hopelessness and a sense of emptiness — an emptiness that can only be temporarily filled by more of the toxin.  Step 3: Once weakened and addicted, a person is now susceptible to any number of manipulations; these include further addiction, ideological brainwashing, identity shaping and, sadly, an encroachment into the once hallowed ground of our thoughts. Free no more. The 1999 Columbine school shooting was the first in the digital age (such events had been almost unheard of before then). Since then, they have become a horrible part of daily life. However, even the FBI acknowledges that these are Internet-fueled copycat events; classic examples of a social contagion — spread and spawned on social media and hate-filled chat rooms that incite the unstable.  Members of a popular TikTok page focused on Tourette Syndrome. Social media experts say pages like these can literally influence healthy young people to feel unwell. This digital social contagion can also lead to ideological extremism. I was an expert witness this year in the capital murder trial of Corey Johnson in Florida, the white suburban teen radicalized by a nonstop stream of ISIS recruitment videos on YouTube. This year, he was sentenced to life in prison for stabbing a 13-year-old boy to death at a 2018 sleepover. And, of course, we have the logic-defying spike in gender dysphoria; a spike that trans psychologist Erica Anderson, who has helped hundreds of teens transition, says “has gone too far.” According to Anderson, teens — who have always gone through periods of identity confusion and experimentation — are now being exposed to and impacted by social media and trans influencers. Dr. Anderson’s insights were confirmed by Dr. Lisa Littman’s research at Brown, which showed the social media impact on what she termed “late onset gender dysphoria.”  Author and addiction expert Nicholas Kardaras’ new book chronicles the link between social media addiction and mental health woes. Rather than truly being ill, he says, many young people see pages about issues like BPD as a “place of belonging.” Like BPD, gender dysphoria is a real psychological phenomenon that people genuinely struggle with. However, what we’re seeing now is something different. We’re seeing social media shaping people in ways that seem to mimic some of these disorders yet are not the genuine article. Several colleagues and I have begun to call them cases of pseudo-BPD, pseudo-DID or pseudo-Gender Dysphoria. These are cases where the presenting symptoms dissipate when the person is removed from social media for several weeks, thereby provi...

For Oklahoma, much like last year, the game presents more than a rivalry matchup — It’s the embodiment of a trap game. Nebraska is beginning life without Scott Frost after firing him this week, with Mickey Joseph taking over. In that regard, the teams are on familiar ground. The Sooners are in the debut season of former Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, and it’s going swimmingly thus far. Oklahoma won its first two games by a combined score of 78-16, but with those games coming against UTEP and Kent State, it’s fair to say Nebraska will be its first test of the year. Dillon Gabriel has lived up to the bill as OK’s quarterback early, whereas time will tell if Casey Thompson continues to find his groove under Joseph coming off a strong week. Going Incognito: How We Can Protect Our Privacy In The Metaverse – VentureBeat https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/going-incognito-how-we-can-protect-our-privacy-in-the-metaverse-venturebeat/ September 17, 2022 6:40 AM Were you unable to attend Transform 2022? Check out all of the summit sessions in our on-demand library now! Watch here. The image below shows me standing in a “Virtual Escape Room” that was created by academic researchers at U.C. Berkeley’s Center for Responsible Decentralized Intelligence. The simulated world requires me to complete a series of tasks, each one unlocking a door. My goal is to move from virtual room to virtual room, unlocking doors by solving puzzles that involve creative thinking, memory skills and physical movements, all naturally integrated into the experience.   Louis Rosenberg inside a Virtual Escape Room created by researchers at U.C. Berkeley (2022) I am proud to say I made it out of the virtual labyrinth and back to reality. Of course, this was created by a research lab, so you might expect the experience was more than it seems. And you’d be right — it was designed to demonstrate the significant privacy concerns in the metaverse. It turns out that while I was solving the puzzles, moving from room to room, the researchers were using my actions and reactions to determine a wide range of information about me. I’m talking about deeply personal data that any third party could have ascertained from my participation in a simple virtual application.  As I have been involved in virtual and augmented reality for decades and have been warning about the hidden dangers for many years, you’d think the data collected would not have surprised me. But you’d be wrong. It’s one thing to warn about the risks in the abstract; it’s something else to experience the privacy issues firsthand. It was quite shocking, actually.   That said, let’s get into the personal data they were able to glean from my short experience in the escape room. First, they were able to triangulate my location. As described in a recent paper about this research, metaverse applications generally ping multiple servers, which here enabled the researchers to quickly predict my location using a process called multilateration. Even if I had been using a VPN to hide my IP address, this technique would still have found where I was. This isn’t shocking, as most people expect their location is known when they connect online, but it is a privacy concern nonetheless.   Going deeper, the researchers were able to use my interactions in the escape room to predict my height, the length of my arms (wingspan), my handedness, my age, my gender, and basic parameters about my physical fitness level, including how low I could crouch down and how quickly I could react to stimuli. They were also able to determine my visual acuity, whether I was colorblind, and the size of the room that I was interacting with, and to make basic assessments of my cognitive acuity. The researchers could have even predicted whether I had certain disabilities.   It’s important to point out that the researchers used standard hardware and software to implement this series of tests, emulating the capabilities that a typical application developer could employ when building a virtual experience in the metaverse. It’s also important to point out that consumers currently have no way to defend against this — there is no “incognito mode” in the metaverse that conceals this information and protects the user against this type of evaluation.   Well, there wasn’t any protection until the researchers began building one — a software tool they call “MetaGuard” that can be installed on standard VR systems. As described in a recent paper by lead researchers Vivek Nair and Gonzalo Garrido of U.C. Berkeley, the tool can mask many of the parameters that were used to profile my physical characteristics in the metaverse. It works by cleverly injecting randomized offsets into the data stream, hiding physical parameters such as my height, wingspan and physical mobility, which otherwise could be used to predict age, gender and health characteristics.   MetaGuard Image from Nair and Garrido The free software tool also enables users to mask their handedness, the frequency range of their voice, and their physical fitness level and conceal their geospatial location by disrupting triangulation techniques. Of course, MetaGuard is just a first step in helping users protect their privacy in immersive worlds, but it’s an important demonstration, showing that consumer-level defenses could easily be deployed.   At the same time, policymakers should consider protecting basic immersive rights for users around the globe, guarding against invasive tracking and profiling. For example, Meta recently announced that its next VR headset will include face and eye tracking. While these new capabilities are likely to unlock very useful features in the metaverse, for example enabling avatars to express more realistic facial expressions, the same data could also be used to track and profile user emotions. This could enable platforms to build predictive models that anticipate how individual users will react to a wide range of circumstances, even enabling adaptive advertisements that are optimized for persuasion.  Personally, I believe the metaverse has the potential to be a deeply humanizing technology that presents digital content in the form most natural to our perceptual system — as immersive experiences. At the same time, the extensive data collected in virtual and augmented worlds is a significant concern and likely requires a range of solutions, from protective software tools like MetaGuard to thoughtful metaverse regulation. For those interested in pushing for a safe metaverse, I point you towards an international community effort called Metaverse Safety Week that is happening in December.   Louis Rosenberg, PhD is an early pioneer in the fields of virtual and augmented reality. Spy Kids: Why Robert Rodriguezs Family Film Became So Popular MovieWeb
Spy Kids: Why Robert Rodriguezs Family Film Became So Popular MovieWeb
Spy Kids: Why Robert Rodriguez’s Family Film Became So Popular – MovieWeb https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/spy-kids-why-robert-rodriguezs-family-film-became-so-popular-movieweb/ Spy Kids is a 2001 family movie directed by Robert Rodriguez. It focuses on young siblings Juni (Daryl Sabara) and Carmen Cortez (Alexa PenaVega), whose parents, Ingrid and Gregorio (played by Carla Gugino and Antonio Banderas), are retired spies. After their parents are kidnapped, Juni and Carmen learn the truth about their family, and decide they must become spies like their parents in order to save them. At the time, Rodriguez was known for making more adult-centered action films, and seemed an odd choice for a family movie. However, he brought his unique perspective to the movie, which was a massive success and made nearly five times its small, $35 million budget at the box office. It also received positive critical reviews, and led to three sequel movies, with a reboot currently in the works. Here’s why the fun family movie became so popular with audiences. The Best Spies in Movies, Ranked It’s Perfect for its Desired Audience – But is Entertaining for Adults Too Dimension Films Spy Kids was a different kind of kids’ movie when it came out, and directly appealed to a younger audience. At the time of its release, most kids’ movies were animated, and the main spy movies were the James Bond films. While it was possible for a younger audience to enjoy them, they definitely were not geared towards kids. Spy Kids took all the coolness and gadgets of being a spy and addressed it directly to kids, making it fun and exciting. In addition, Carmen and Juni are normal kids; they don’t have any magical powers, and they aren’t royalty, like many characters in kids’ movies. Instead, they’re two average kids who get to become super spies, and it lets other kids feel like they were also super spies, saving the day. While the movie is definitely meant to be enjoyed by kids, older audiences can still find some excitement in it. It has an absurd sense of humor, with sly adult jokes and clever ways of sneaking in swearing (like shiitake mushrooms) that adults will find enjoyable. It also has many actors that appeal to adults. Along with Gugino and Banderas, Alan Cumming is delightfully over-the-top as the villainous TV host Fegan Floop, who kidnaps Ingrid and Gregorio. In addition, all the movies feature cameos from major stars, with the first movie featuring Danny Trejo as Carmen and Juni’s uncle, and George Clooney as spy chief Devlin. The movie is still aimed at kids, and will delight them. But there’s enough enjoyment for adults as well, making it an accessible movie. It Boasts Real Wonder and Imagination Dimension Films A main feature of Spy Kids is how imaginative it is, especially in its visuals. A lot of the movie’s settings and designs look, as Looper says, like “a kid made a kid’s movie.” The OSS, which is the spy agency headquarters, is actually shaped like the agency letters, with the kids’ section built like a playground. Floop’s henchmen are called Thumb Thumbs, and really have thumbs for all their limbs, including their heads. Even the gadgets are colorful and kid-friendly, looking more like toys than the serious equipment found in adult spy films. It’s a unique take on the typical spy movie settings that really feels like a kid designed it, and will delight viewers. All the details really establish the world of the movie, and let you fully enjoy all the imagination running free. The fun and interesting visuals, from the OSS building to the cool designs of Floop’s castle, make you view everything like a kid again. This fun world of color and action is not the world of a gritty, realistic spy movie, and it doesn’t need to be. Spy Kids really feels like it’s made by and for kids, and this imagination and wonder are part of what makes it so appealing and popular. Best Robert Rodriguez Movies, Ranked It Has Great Family Dynamics Dimension Films Spy Kids has always been a family project for Rodriguez. The movie was inspired by his uncle’s work in the FBI, and he wanted to pay tribute to his family and celebrate their ancestry. Most notably, according to Indie Wire, Rodriguez fought to keep the Cortezes as a Latin family, even when studio executives were against it. The studio wanted a typical American family, and Rodrgiuez said that his family was American, and that Spy Kids would still be a universal family story. This is completely true, and the Cortezes’ Latin background is prominent, important representation, while still showing them as a typical family. In addition, they have a great family dynamic. Carmen and Juni have a realistic sibling relationship, bickering and teasing but still coming together when they need to. They feel like real kids, making jokes and delighting in all the spy gadgets. Ingrid and Gregorio are strong and loving parents who have a healthy relationship with each other, and truly care about their kids. The Cortezes are the heart of the movie; a lovable family you want to watch as heroic spies. It’s easy to see the love the family has for each other, and they’re characters everyone can enjoy and relate to. It’s been 20 years since the first Spy Kids movie was released, and the franchise still remains well-loved. The first movie establishes the most important parts of the franchise, and showed that this fun, family take on a spy movie could be a success. Its all-ages appeal, fun designs, and a strong family at its heart make Spy Kids immensely popular and enjoyable. It’s a memorable family movie that continues to delight all ages.

Soon after, the platform integrated its utility token, the $COV.  Covesting is a module that allows copy trading, that is, the possibility for users of the site, especially less experienced traders, to literally copy the trading strategies of professional or very experienced traders.  It should be noted that with this system, everyone can benefit. On the one hand, novice users can learn by mimicking the winning strategies of the most successful traders and thus generate profits. On the other hand, the traders with the best results earn a share of the commissions of those who follow them and adopt the trading strategies they have developed. The $COV: the indispensable utility token  The COV token is an ERC-20 token built on Ethereum blockchain (ETH) smart contracts. It was explicitly designed for use via the Covesting copy trading module.  In particular, strategy managers can reduce their trading costs by up to 25% per month by paying a fixed amount of COV tokens. Please note that the rate reduction and the activation fee may change, so it is important to check the latest information on the offers listed in the Covesting module’s COV token dashboard on PrimeXBT. Another benefit of owning COV is that the token is regularly burned, which reduces the overall supply and therefore increases its value over the long term.  Three ways to win big There’s a lot to gain from this joint promotional campaign. The First Drone To Collect Weather Data In The U.S. May Launch This Fall The Washington Post
The First Drone To Collect Weather Data In The U.S. May Launch This Fall The Washington Post
The First Drone To Collect Weather Data In The U.S. May Launch This Fall – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-first-drone-to-collect-weather-data-in-the-u-s-may-launch-this-fall-the-washington-post/ All it takes is a patch of fog to ruin Thomas Swoyer’s day. Swoyer runs the first and only fully operational hub for researching, testing and developing commercial drones in the United States, from those used for military reconnaissance to ones that may drop packages at your front door someday. But local weather events like fog, ice, low clouds, or thunderstorms can suddenly pose risks to flights. In fact, about 30 percent of drone flights by Swoyer’s company, Grand Sky, in Grand Forks, N.D., are canceled because of weather. “If I’m going to deliver a package 20 miles down the road, I have to know what I’m flying into, and weather is my number-one risk,” Swoyer said. Canceled flights cost money, waste labor hours, slow research and sometimes even delay critical military missions. Now Grand Sky is looking into how to better predict weather conditions for its drone flights. The solution? Use another drone. Pending government approval, the “Meteodrone” will launch this fall and be the first drone to record weather data used operationally in the United States. The data collected would then be fed into computer models to improve forecasts for drone flight operations. The Meteodrone isn’t your average drone. It’s packed with small weather instruments, which can measure temperature, dew point, relative humidity, wind speed and pressure. An onboard camera can take valuable images as storm systems develop and progress. It’s also designed to withstand a range of intense weather, armed with safety features like heated propellers to ward off icing, and an emergency parachute. A pilot can remotely launch the drone into the atmosphere and send it up to to 20,000 feet, sampling the atmosphere both on its way up and down in a straight line. “The benefit of the Meteodrone here is being able to get those constant and frequent profiles, particularly when you have interesting or important weather events going on,” said Brad Guay, a meteorologist at Meteomatics, the company that creates the technology. All of the collected data will feed into a high-resolution computer model for the area around Grand Forks Air Force Base. Right now, “the data isn’t granular enough. We just don’t have enough data. Our models are not sufficient,” said Don Berchoff, co-founder and CEO of TruWeather Solutions, which will provide decision-support once the high-resolution modeling is completed. The data will also reveal previously poorly understood weather patterns between the ground and flight level, critical for drone flights across the country. The Meteodrone will be new to the United States, but it’s already used regularly in Switzerland. Fifteen Meteodrone stations are situated around the European country, collecting data from the atmosphere around the Alps. “We have done more than 20,000 vertical profiles, thousands of flight hours,” said Martin Fengler, founder of the weather forecast service Meteomatics. In conjunction with the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology, Meteomatics has been working on data collection and high-resolution modeling in Switzerland. Fengler first became interested in the idea of using drones for weather collection about a decade ago in Germany, as he worked to obtain his private pilot license. “I had never experienced a bad weather forecast myself,” he said of his time before becoming a pilot. But many of his drone practice flights were disrupted by poorly forecasted fog or cloud heights. He started thinking about how he could fill the data gap in this key part of the atmosphere, where so much activity takes place. And there are many gaps to fill. In large states such as North Dakota, surface weather stations, radar towers, and balloon launch sites are spaced far apart and leave huge weather blind spots. Other areas are using outdated or broken instruments. The Chatham, Mass., weather balloon launch site, the only site in the six-state region, closed last fall due to coastal erosion, and has yet to be replaced. The National Weather Service says it hopes to have a new site finalized by the end of this summer, but until then, critical data is being missed, potentially impacting the performance of computer modeling and forecasts. Grand Sky is investing just under $1 million dollars in this new technology, but Swoyer believes it’s well worth it. With better data collection from the Meteodrone and more accurate high-resolution weather models, he hopes a launch could just be delayed by a few hours, instead of outright canceled. “If I can get 10 percent more flight hours, it pays for itself in the first year,” said Swoyer. “The real value for me is more flight time, more up time, more mission time.” For Berchoff, the potential to detect icing with the Meteodrone is particularly exciting. Icing is incredibly hard to forecast and extremely dangerous. It’s described as one of the biggest risks to drone flight, since ice buildup on the wings can dramatically impact the aircraft’s ability to stay airborne. “Icing is the key here. We’re going to put that thing up to see if there’s icing,” he says of the company’s plan to regularly sample the lower atmosphere. Fengler expects drone technology to keep evolving quickly in coming years. “In about 2 to 3 years from now, we’ll see drones that can fly to 10 kilometers,” he predicts. Berchoff says drones offer the “best business case ever for detecting micro-weather.” He’s optimistic that the data from North Dakota is just the start of a wider network for weather drones sampling data entirely missed by forecasters until now. Michael Page is a Boston-based certified broadcast meteorologist with more than a decade of experience covering meteorology, the environment, and science related news.

Energy Adviser: Utility Offers Help With Energy Bills – The Columbian https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/energy-adviser-utility-offers-help-with-energy-bills-the-columbian/ By Clark Public Utilities Published: September 17, 2022, 5:37am The representatives in Clark Public Utilities’ Community Care Department, better known as ComCare, are specially trained to help customers get assistance with their utility bills — regardless of how they heat their homes. “We know that many of our customers are doing their best to get by, but still need some assistance from time to time,” said Clark Public Utilities Community Care Manager Chiharu Russell. “In many households, one unexpected bill is all it takes to put their budget months behind,” she added. “Also, we’re just a couple months from the heating season, those winter utility bills put a lot of pressure on people living on fixed incomes.” ComCare representatives specialize in helping qualifying customers sign up for Clark Public Utilities’ in-house assistance programs and screening them for other programs they may qualify for. “Because the utility serves the entire county, other agencies recognized our department as an opportunity to reach the largest pool of potential candidates possible,” Russell said. The utility offers several energy assistance programs. The Guarantee of Service Plan helps customers eliminate built-up debt while making energy payments a more manageable part of their budgets. This 12-month program reduces electricity payments to a percentage of monthly household income. After successful completion of the program, any remaining account balance is forgiven. The Senior Rate Credit program is available to households with at least one person 62 or older who meets the income eligibility limits. The program offers an account credit based on the previous January through April electric heating bills. Upon qualification, the credit will be applied directly to the customer’s account. Senior Citizen Rate Credits are applied to eligible accounts annually and new applications can be processed at any time during the year. The federally funded Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, is administrated by the utility on behalf of Clark County. It offers heating assistance regardless of a home’s heat type. LIHEAP is unique because it doesn’t follow the calendar year. Instead it runs from October to mid-summer. While the utility’s in-house heating assistance programs are intended to help customers with only their electric heat bills, LIHEAP is “fuel blind,” meaning Clark County residents can receive support no matter how they heat their homes. Enrollment begins in October. Clark Public Utilities administers it on behalf of Clark County. Scheduling appointments for LIHEAP begin Sept. 19. The Columbian is becoming a rare example of a news organization with local, family ownership. Subscribe today to support local journalism and help us to build a stronger community. In addition to helping customers pay home energy bills, LIHEAP can help with emergency furnace repair or replacement, energy conservation guidance and resources, and offer referrals to weatherization programs. Operation Warm Heart is an income-based program that helps households pay energy bills during a financial crisis. The program is entirely donation supported. Since 1985, Operation Warm Heart has provided nearly $3.6 million to 14,800 limited-income families in crisis to help pay their electric bills. These recipients can barely make ends meet, but may not qualify for other financial assistance. Customers who are able can help the utility support those in need with a one-time or regular monthly contribution. Every dollar contributed to Operation Warm Heart goes directly to families in need and may be tax-deductible. Knowing that English is not every customer’s first language, the utility offers interpretation services for a broad spectrum of languages. To find out more about financial assistance for yourself or someone else, or to make a contribution to Operation Warm Heart, call our customer service department at 360-992-3000. I Like Cash Back Cards Better Than Travel Cards. Heres Why The Motley Fool
I Like Cash Back Cards Better Than Travel Cards. Here’s Why – The Motley Fool https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/i-like-cash-back-cards-better-than-travel-cards-heres-why-the-motley-fool/ Image source: Getty Images Should you opt for cash back cards like I did? Key points Some credit cards offer cash back on purchases, while other cards offer travel rewards. I prefer cash back cards because of the flexibility they offer. Credit cards can be broadly divided into a few different categories. Some are travel cards that offer bonus rewards for purchasing travel and which often encourage you to use those rewards to pay for more trips. Others are cash back cards that give you money back for all of your purchases. While I’ve had both travel and cash back cards, I greatly prefer those that offer cash back. Here’s why. This is the big benefit of cash back cards over travel cards The main reason I prefer cash back cards over travel credit cards is because of the increased flexibility these cards offer. In most cases, if you have a travel card, you get the best value for your rewards points or miles if you redeem them for vacations. You usually have to book through a special portal established by your credit card company in order to get the maximum value for your points. And you often have to use your rewards points or miles for specific kinds of travel-related expenses, such as flights or hotels. Now, if you are absolutely confident that by the time you earn enough rewards to redeem that you’re going to want to use those rewards to pay for trips, then this may not bother you. But, as the past few years of COVID-related uncertainty has demonstrated, it can be hard to know what direction your life will take and if you’ll still be able and willing to use your points for a vacation in a few months or a few years when you’ve amassed enough of them. I have two small children, so it can be especially hard to predict what types of trips we’re going to be taking and when, since a lot depends on how my children are developing at the time and whether they can handle going on a plane without disturbing fellow passengers too much. I don’t want to be tied into booking trips just to get the most benefit out of my credit card, so cash back cards work better for me. With a cash back card, I can choose to use the cash I get back from my credit card company to pay for vacations if I want to. But I can also opt to do other things with the funds (for example, most often, I invest the money in a brokerage account to save for my future). I’m simply not willing to give up the flexibility that a cash back card provides. What type of cards are right for you? Figuring out what credit card is best for you can be complicated since it depends both on the types of things you tend to spend money on and your preferences for how you want to redeem your credit card rewards. If you want to defray the cost of your trips by using credit card points to pay for them, then a travel credit card could be the ideal choice. But if you’re like me and want a broader choice of how to use your rewards without feeling like you have to book trips to maximize their value, then a cash back card may be the better bet for you, too. Top credit card wipes out interest until 2023 If you have credit card debt, transferring it to this top balance transfer card secures you a 0% intro APR into 2023! Plus, you’ll pay no annual fee. Those are just a few reasons why our experts rate this card as a top pick to help get control of your debt. Read our full review for free and apply in just 2 minutes.

‘It Is Not Something You Can Control’ : People With Obesity Face Both Stigma And Health Fears – Irish Examiner https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/it-is-not-something-you-can-control-people-with-obesity-face-both-stigma-and-health-fears-irish-examiner/ Just 170 patients underwent weight-loss surgery in the public system in Ireland in 2021, with people who are living with obesity waiting up to 10 years for operations. Others find their mental health impacted — and a small number die. Catherine O’Sullivan, 57, from Gorey in Co Wexford, delivered the mail for 20 years and enjoyed being on the move, chatting to people all day.  However, arising out of poor health, she had to retire from the job she loves and is awaiting bariatric surgery. ‘Just in the system’ She needs a hysterectomy and a knee replacement, neither of which she can have unless she goes under a certain weight.  She has tried all of the slimming clubs and had been on diets “practically every week”. Ms O’Sullivan first started gaining weight during her teenage years. She did a lot of walking in her job as a postal operative, but her weight was always a problem. Since her loss of mobility, she has found her weight gain to be unmanageable. “Once my mobility became bad, then the excess weight gain continued,” she said. “I was already heavy as it was, but now I am living with obesity and my quality of life is really bad. I am not even on the list for surgery. I am just in the system.” People who undergo the surgery have to reach strict criteria, and it is not an operation that is undergone without considerable assessment. Dangers of obesity According to the World Health Organization European Regional Obesity Report published earlier this year, Ireland ranks ninth of 53 European countries for obesity in adults, and 11th for overweight and obesity. Being overweight or living with obesity is the fourth-most common risk factor for non-infectious disease, after high blood pressure, diet, and tobacco, and it is the leading risk factor for disability.  Sleep apnoea and endometrial cancer also have quite a high prevalence among people living with obesity. Ms O’Sullivan said that it is understandable that priority is given to people who also have other conditions such as diabetes and depression.  She is grateful not to suffer from either, but fears the development of complications if she has to wait too long for surgery. For now, she feels she has to “grin and bear it”. “And just knowing that there is help there at the end of the road,” she said. “Hopefully it will go my way.” Ms O’Sullivan attends weekly Zoom classes with the Irish Coalition for People Living with Obesity (ICPO) which is a group that aims to support, educate, and raise awareness that obesity is a complex chronic disease. She said finding ICPO was the best thing to ever happen to her in relation to coping with her feelings about her body. “To know that there are so many out there living the same way as we are,” she said. “It just makes a difference.” Bariatric operations abroad Meanwhile, the lead of ICPO, Susie Birney, 47, from Dublin, said the long waiting list for bariatric operations has driven many patients to private overseas clinics. Susie Birney. Photograph: Abbie Trayler-Smith. She said surgery overseas works well for patients who have good communication with their GP back home who can provide aftercare. However, many times the knowledge about surgery aftercare is not present among doctors. “GPs will sometimes say: ‘I am not equipped.’  But if you have been waiting 10 years on a waiting list and your quality of life is poor, well then would you blame somebody for looking at those options abroad?” Ms Birney never had any problem with weight gain in her childhood, and was very sporty. However, she lived with avoidant restrictive food intake disorder from an early age and once she reached puberty, her weight started to rise. “I couldn’t eat vegetables,” she said. “I couldn’t eat fruit. So it was always a battle from the start.  “I got to my teens. I fully believed that my food disorder was the only reason that my health started getting worse. “At 19-20, everything was changing around that time so it was very hard to pinpoint. I had a serious knee injury and I also had mild depression coming into the winter. It would have been a case of putting on two or three stone, losing a stone. That continued that way right up to my 30s where I gained more than I lost each time. “The stigma was always awful. Which wasn’t intentional but was awful. Criticism like ‘what are you doing about your weight? ‘ I was swimming four or five days a week but I reached 25 stone.” In one year, she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and sciatica. Her feelings of depression increased and her quality of life deteriorated completely. At the age of 35, she started attending the Weight Management Service in Loughlinstown in Dublin and she had also been referred to Beaumont Hospital for her diabetes.  Ms Birney also attended a separate clinic for her polycystic ovarian syndrome. Susie Birney. Picture: Abbie Trayler-Smith. “So completely different directions,” she said. “Back then, I would have thought there was no link between them. “I had my appointments at the Weight Management Service and didn’t really understand what it was about. At the time I just felt complete shame about being there.  “How did I land here? How did I need this? I was fully fixated on fixing the food disorder.” Support groups Ms Birney joined a patient support group, which was a “defining moment” in her life as she was with people who were experiencing similar issues to her. “And we started coming up with ideas like family walks, healthy lunches, and so we were doing what most people don’t expect people living with obesity to do,” she said. We were trying to help ourselves. Most people think we don’t.” At one point, Ms Birney was about 110th on the list for bariatric surgery with just 30 operations having been completed in Ireland the previous year. She was about three or four years away from surgery when she began to suffer major secondary complications. “With diabetes, I had been diagnosed with retinopathy, which is in the eyes,” she said.  “You go through different stages with that, and you could actually end up blind.” Susie decided to find out what she was entitled to on her private health scheme. Her private health insurers said they would pay for half of her bariatric surgery if she opted to go private. “I had had two hernia operations at this stage as well,” she said.  My stomach wall was weak. My quality of life was poor. I wasn’t working full time. I couldn’t afford the surgery. “I wrote letters. I got the surgeon in Loughlinstown. I got the physiotherapist. I got my GP all to write to my health insurer to say my health was spiralling despite being on medication. I needed treatment.” Her surgery was approved, and Susie had her bariatric operation in 2015.  Surgery ‘pays for itself’ Susie says the day she had the surgery she went off all of her diabetes medications. She insists that the surgery pays for itself and she cannot understand why it is so under-resourced.  She said: “Being off all long-term illness medications for the last seven years — how much would that be? That would pay for the surgery in just a couple of years. It doesn’t make sense that the Government isn’t ploughing more services into treating obesity because of what it saves.” Susie warns that it is common for people to regain some weight after they have bariatric surgery, and they still face lifelong issues with weight. “I still have a team that is so important for anybody’s treatment,” she said. “I think everybody needs a team approach if you are dealing with obesity. “The team has helped me. I am on another treatment, so I am back down some of the weight I regained. It is this realisation that this is something that is for life. “Not all treatments work for life. And when one isn’t working, you have to find out what is the next best treatment that you can use.” Understanding obesity She says that people think that the reason for obesity is simply overeating. “But overeating in most cases comes from some other reason,” she said.  And that can be from the medication you are on. That can just be your genetics. Your hormones.” She feels that people living with obesity often feel immense shame when they cannot overcome immense cravings. “Science now shows that someone who lives with the genetics of obesity, as soon as you try to restrict yourself, you have intense cravings you can’t control,” she said. “People think that weight is under voluntary control. It is not. “It is not something you can control. Your body will fight against you for many different reasons. “I think slimming groups work fantastically for those whose weight doesn’t impact their health directly. But if you are somebody living with the chronic disease of obesity and are living with probably gaining or losing three, four, or five stone at a time, slimming groups can help, but they aren’t the only option. You need treatment.” Susie stresses that the majority of people they speak to in support groups do not want to live this sort of life. “They have tried and tested so many diets over the years and for a lot of them that lifestyle isn’t sustainable,” she said.  “Many will say that they have a healthier lifestyle than their partners do, but their partners don’t live with obesity. They get so tired of being stigmatised.” She says that obesity is a chronic disease for those who have it. “If society was to be a bit more understanding and not just look at it as a visual,” she said.  “When you visually look at someone with this disease, you assume their lifestyle choices. “But if somebody has Type 2 diabetes and that is uncontrolled because they weren’t taking their medication, you wouldn’t judge them. Just be...

The Weekly Authority: Google Parts With Pixelbook – Android Authority https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-weekly-authority-google-parts-with-pixelbook-android-authority/ Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority Welcome to The Weekly Authority, the Android Authority newsletter that breaks down the top Android and tech news from the week. The 212th edition here, with Pixel 7 storage options, OnePlus 11 Pro renders, Sony’s State of Play and Nintendo Direct highlights, an “easier” way to make cup noodles, and more. This week I’m feeling quite smug to be writing this from the comfort of my new couch, in my new apartment. Ok, so I’m still not unpacked, but I made it! In other news, the temperature here in Scotland dropped to 6°C this morning, so I may need to unpack my sweaters first… Popular news this week Sony: At Tuesday’s Xperia event, Sony announced the Xperia Stream, a cooling accessory for the Xperia 1 IV with a variety of ports, but no word on pricing or availability yet. Movies/TV: HBO Max’s The White Lotus took home five gongs at the Emmys, beating Ted Lasso (four) and Succession (three). The new Google Chromecast HD might have a big advantage over its predecessor, but it may not be so cheap after all. Disney’s D23 event last weekend had lots of cool teasers and trailers, including an official trailer for Willow, several Star Wars trailers, a black and white trailer for Werewolf by Night, a trailer for Marvel’s Secret Invasion, starring Samuel L. Jackson, and much more. Mashable’s got some interesting reviews this week: “Tense social thriller” End of the Road (Netflix), “groundbreaking and glorious action epic” The Woman King (in theaters now), and classic rom-com Ticket to Paradise (coming to cinemas October 21). If you’re still stuck on what to watch this week, here’s our pick of the best new TV shows to stream, including season five of The Handmaid’s Tale, plus the best new streaming movies this week, from Ridley Scott’s epic The Last Duel to something lighter with black comedy Do Revenge. Paul Greengrass is adapting Stephen King’s Fairy Tale for the big screen: The book hit shelves earlier this month, and King believes the man behind several Bourne movies is “a wonderful choice.” Elsewhere, Glenn Powell and Regé-Jean Page will be Butch And Sundance for a new Amazon series set in an alternative history version of America. Also this week: We saw a new trailer for Park Chan-Wook’s Decision to Leave. described as “an intensely romantic cat-and-mouse thriller.” And Amazon greenlights Blade Runner 2049 sequel series. Finally: Netflix is holding its global fan event with first looks and company news on September 24. Gaming: Missed Ubisoft Forward on Sunday? Highlights included Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope gameplay, more Skull and Bones gameplay, stuff for the Division franchise, and a ton of Assassin’s Creed, including AC Red, set in Japan, AC Mirage, coming in 2023 and set in Baghdad, AC Codename HEXE, which looks sort of witchy, two undated mobile games (one announced for Netflix, the other set in China), and a multiplayer game codenamed Invictus. Tokyo Game Show 2022 started on Thursday running through Sunday: IGN has all the livestreams you need. At Disney’s D23 event, Disney Illusion Island was announced: the 2D co-op platformer starring Mickey Mouse and friends will come exclusively to Nintendo Switch in 2023. Eurogamer has a neat roundup of everything announced in Sony’s State of Play on Tuesday, but highlights included action-RPG Rise of the Ronin, a trailer for Tekken 8 (ooh!), some new PSVR2 games (like tabletop RPG Demeo), a new Hogwarts Legacy trailer, a glimpse of Yakuza spin-off Like a Dragon: Ishin, first-person driving survival game Pacific Drive, and much more. If you missed September’s Nintendo Direct on Tuesday, you can catch up here, but The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom headlined, coming May 12, 2023. We also saw an official announcement trailer for Pikmin 4, and Nintendo revealed Goldeneye 007 is coming to Nintendo Switch Online, with online play. Meta Quest Pro leaks online with unboxing video after claims prototype was left in a hotel room. On the topic of VR, Sony dashes hopes and confirms PSVR2 won’t be backwards compatible. Meanwhile, The Sims 4 is going free to play from October 18 across PC, Mac, and consoles, and current players will get a free content pack. And Discord finally comes to Xbox! Here’s how to use it. Which reminds us: Deathloop finally lands on Xbox on Tuesday, likely to only be on Xbox Series X/S consoles. Finally: Call of Duty Warzone 2.0 gets a release date and all-new third-person mode — November 16 is the date for your diaries. Reviews Ryan Haines / Android Authority Samsung Galaxy A23 5G review: Searching for the middle ground — “Its sizable crisp display and equally large and long-lasting battery are excellent among budget phones, though it has some rough edges in tender spots” (Android Authority). Honor MagicBook 14 (2022) review — “A solid productivity laptop, offering fast processing speeds, a great port selection, and good battery life. Its design isn’t so impressive, failing to stand out from rivals such as Apple and Huawei” (Trusted Reviews). MSI Summit E16 Flip Evo review — “A classy, fairly long-lasting semi-portable performance laptop with a large 360-degree 16-inch screen. The display of the version reviewed is not mind-blowing and you’d hope to see a glass touchpad at this level, but MSI has made few mistakes with this solid all-rounder” (Trusted Reviews). Features Weekly Wonder This week we’re wondering about the point of Thanko’s Cup Noodle Machine. Why does it exist? What’s its purpose? Exactly how much time is it supposed to save you? Who are these people that are too busy to boil water? Keep reading and you’ll find out exactly what we’re talking about. Rise of the ramen Cup noodles, instant noodles, ramen… whatever you call them, there’s no denying that this staple student food has become a quick go-to snack for many. Love them or hate them, cup noodles are here to stay — they’re cheap, cheerful, and delicious, even if they’re not the healthiest choice. Easier than boiling water Since preparing cup noodles involves nothing more than peeling open the lid of the cup, boiling some water, adding it to the cup, and waiting for the ingredients to rehydrate, why would anyone create a gadget designed to simplify that process? Japan’s Thanko obviously thought the task could be easier. The Makasetei looks a lot like a Keurig coffee machine. This one takes noodle cups, not pods, though. Just pop off the plastic seal, place your noodle cup on the device, lower the mechanism, add water, start the machine, and set a timer. The Makasetei will automatically boil the water, add it to the cup, and then let you know when your noodley-goodness is ready. It doesn’t exactly sound like one of the best smart kitchen tech products around. Though Thanko’s no stranger to quirky gadgets, from its folding fan umbrella to its car rice cooker (yes, really). We should add, the Makasetei will set you back $45, which seems like a lot to spend on a task that could easily be achieved with an electric kettle. Not to mention the kitchen counter real estate it’ll take up. True, it might come in handy if (like me) you’ve just moved house and have no idea which box you packed the kettle in. Or if you don’t own an electric kettle. And for those with a serious cup noodle habit, well, we guess it’s a bit of a novelty. Still… $45! Tech Calendar September 29: OnePlus 10T on sale October 6 @ 10 AM ET: Pixel 7 launch October 11 @ 1PM ET: Meta Connect Conference (new VR headset?) Legion Capital: Why This Revolutionary Project Is Thriving In A Bear Market – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/legion-capital-why-this-revolutionary-project-is-thriving-in-a-bear-market-cryptonews/ Disclaimer: The text below is a press release that is not part of Cryptonews.com editorial content. Legion Capital, a promising 10-month-old innovative project, is turning heads in the crypto space. Despite the recent market pullback, this alt-coin has experienced an unparalleled YTD price increase of 1,100%. While it seems everyone else is experiencing yet another “crypto winter”, Legion holders are beyond thrilled with the performance of this ERC-20 token that boasts an impressive trajectory chart and is now positioned to explode. The Perfect Storm: Deflationary Tokenomics. Daily Buybacks. Digital Assets Backed By Tangible, Real-World Commodities Why is this revolutionary project thriving in a bear market? Legion’s unique business model offers the perfect storm of deflationary tokenomics, daily buybacks, and powerful income-generating digital assets backed by tangible, real-world commodities. Commodities like oil, natural gas, high-yield agriculture, real estate, and more. By allocating profits from their acquired assets for buybacks, Legion’s model produces a deflationary token designed for an ever-increasing price floor and long-term sustainability. For example, thus far Legion has burned 1.74 Billion $LEGION tokens – forever removing over 17% of their own coin from circulation. And they’re just getting started. These deflationary tokenomics create scarcity of $LEGION tokens, which will play a key role in the future real-world utility of the project, exclusively for $LEGION holders. Taking the Uncertainty & Complexity Out of Crypto The reality is most investors don’t have the time, capital, or industry experience to benefit from the greatest opportunities that blockchain technology has to offer. Legion Capital – holding several million dollars in assets already – bridges this gap by providing a simple, yet exciting solution for anyone to take advantage of crypto’s most powerful income-generating assets.   Legion’s aim is to take the uncertainty and complexity out of crypto by doing the heavy lifting – and  providing a simple gateway for anyone who wants to benefit from crypto’s greatest projects. Success Pillars: Discipline, Transparency & Balance Everything Legion Capital does – from investing strategies, buybacks, marketing, website design, company structure, etc. – is methodically and rigorously analyzed before execution. The team’s vision is highly dependent on their ability to (1) attract new users to their platform and (2) generate consistent cash flow from successful investments.  The team believes that integrity is imperative for success, and has structured the project in such a way that anyone can view, via their comprehensive Dashboard, how their investments are performing in real-time. Additionally, the team doesn’t make money unless their investments are profitable. And profitable investments are directly correlated with $LEGION buybacks. The end result: the team wins only when $LEGION holders win.  Finally, Legion Capital believes that balance sets the stage for prosperity and fulfillment. For example, the project donates 5% of all profits to charitable causes throughout the world because they believe in giving back and doing good. They even go as far as closing their Telegram chat every Sunday and encourage their community to spend quality time with loved ones or to go out and do what they love. About Legion Capital In 2017, Legion’s talented team with decades of combined experience in business, finance, and strategy began investing in cryptocurrencies. On their way to building a multi-million-dollar portfolio, they found that navigating the crypto space was often overwhelming. Growing and managing a successful crypto portfolio is extremely time-consuming, stressful, and complicated. The ongoing research required to consistently make good decisions and invest in the right projects can be very difficult. After witnessing many investors miss out on crypto’s greatest opportunities, the team found themselves asking: “Is there a better way?” In late 2021, the team set out to create a solution that allowed anyone to benefit from the best of crypto without its vices – and Legion Capital was born. If you want one access point to crypto’s most powerful assets, you’ve come to the right place. Legion’s disciplined, structured approach allows the team to utilize their expertise, time, and personal connections to provide a simple, yet incredibly rewarding experience for $LEGION holders. The U.S. Safety Net Was Built For Cold Winters. Hot Summers Threaten It. – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-u-s-safety-net-was-built-for-cold-winters-hot-summers-threaten-it-the-washington-post/ For decades, the federal government has helped the poor with energy costs during chilly winters. Now sweltering summers are straining the social safety net. September 17, 2022 at 7:00 a.m. EDT Melissa Besong, 40, outside the NeedLink Nashville offices after filling out an applications to keep her electricity from being cut off. (William DeShazer for The Washington Post) NASHVILLE — The moment NeedLink Nashville opened its doors just after Labor Day weekend, Melissa Besong entered the nonprofit’s office holding her overdue electric bill. Four months after losing her job as a home health aide, she didn’t want to miss out on a chance to keep her power running. “Hopefully,” she said, shut-off warning in hand, “they’ll help me out before it’s time.” More than 40 years ago, Congress established a critical safety net, the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program, to help people financially survive frigid winters and the costs of run heat. But sweltering summers are now creating a huge new financial burden for Americans whose air conditioners run up energy bills for longer periods of time. The new financial toll of summer shows how government is struggling to keep up with the ways that climate change — during the hottest months of the year — threatens the financial livelihoods of some of the most vulnerable Americans. This year offers a vivid example. Thanks to pandemic-related funds, the Biden administration was able to more than double the $3.8 billion dollar federal energy assistance program. Administration officials said it marked the largest one-year investment in the program since it began in 1981. But advocates said about 85 percent has already gone to winter heating bills, which have also soared as global energy prices surged. This left little for people enduring another sweltering summer. By the time the administration instructed states in July to use the additional funding to subsidize summer cooling costs and build community cooling centers, many states had already used the stimulus money to pay off the huge debts that accumulated during the pandemic, said Mark Wolfe, executive director of the National Energy Assistance Directors’ Association. Some states had run out of money. Others, like Colorado and Pennsylvania, which focus their spending on heating costs, had closed their energy assistance programs for the summer. “The dilemma is, we don’t have enough funding to cover both heating and cooling,” Wolfe said. “This is a very serious problem.” From the Southeast to the Mountain West, leaders of private aid groups and state-run energy assistance programs said they have been flooded with requests for help with electric bills this summer. People who have never asked for assistance before are calling, emailing and showing up at their offices with overdue bills that are double or even triple the amount these groups typically see. As with rent and food price spikes, the burden of higher electricity bills falls mainly on low-income families who already spend a greater share of their earnings on utilities. In response to the pandemic, the Census Bureau began surveying Americans to see how they were coping with rising energy costs. An analysis by The Washington Post of survey responses collected from July 27 — Aug. 8 found that nearly 20 percent of households making less than $25,000 said they have kept temperatures in their homes at levels that felt unsafe or unhealthy for some months in the year. This was more common among Latino and Black respondents, regardless of their income, than among Whites and Asians. As temperatures rise due to climate change, air conditioning units are using more energy to keep homes comfortable, generating staggering bills and shut-off warnings for those who fail to pay. About 20 million Americans are behind on their utility bills, according to the National Energy Assistance Directors’ Association, which represents state officials administering energy assistance programs. They owe an average of $800, double the amount before the pandemic. “It’s definitely the case that cooling costs are not only increasing because of energy prices but also because cooling is more necessary as a result of climate change,” said Diana Hernández, an associate professor of sociomedical sciences at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. This July ranked as Nashville’s second-hottest on record. At NeedLink Nashville, the number of applications for assistance this July and August has climbed 25 percent above the pre-pandemic norm, according to its senior program director Sarah Moore. The organization opens its online application on Monday mornings and shuts it down after 75 requests, the most it can process in a week. “We’ve been having to cut it off within 45 minutes,” Moore said. Several factors account for the surge of people in need this year, making it challenging to separate out the role of increasingly severe summer heat. The rising price of natural gas has made it more expensive to produce electricity. Electric bills in August soared 15.8 percent compared to the same period the year before, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the biggest increase since 1981. And though the job market has rebounded from its pandemic losses, many people are still struggling to pay off the debt racked up during that time. Even before supply chain disruptions and Russia’s war in Ukraine boosted U.S. energy prices, the question of how to stay cool during the summer — and how to pay for it — had become a growing problem for poorer Americans. In the hottest parts of the country, access to air conditioning is not just a source of comfort — for the elderly and people with chronic medical conditions, it can mean life or death. For 78-year-old Annette Todd Moore, who suffers from asthma and relies on a breathing machine, turning off the AC wasn’t an option. “I need my air conditioner in my house,” she said while sitting in Needlink Nashville’s waiting room after her electric bill doubled this summer. “With the heat index going up, it’s life and death.” Even after Labor Day, the unofficial end of summer, the crickets were still chirping and the temperatures were still balmy in Tennessee. “Oh my God, it’s so hot out there,” said one woman inquiring about aid before grabbing a cup of water. Since losing her job this spring, Besong spent time at home, keeping cool and cooking for her 7- and 5-year-olds. To help make ends meet, she cleaned two families’ homes. Her finicky air conditioner, she suspected, caused her electric bill this summer to skyrocket. “This summer was pretty hot,” she said, holding a bill with an overdue balance of $253. “Most definitely hotter than last summer.” Lawmakers from New England, whose constituents have historically benefited the most from the federal fuel assistance program, continue to press for more funding. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.) led an effort to warn House and Senate Appropriations Committee members that without the assistance program “we will not meet the needs of low-income families this winter.” Wolfe and other advocates have urged Congress to increase the program next year above the $4 billion the House and Senate have tentatively agreed to budget. Olivia Wein, a staff attorney for the National Consumer Law Center, said funding must “move northward toward $8 billion” to meet year-round heating and cooling needs. “We’re literally turning over the couch shaking out coins,” said Joshua Hollins, executive director of the Louisiana Housing Corporation, which oversees the state’s energy assistance funds. Louisiana is no stranger to brutal summers. A spokesman for Entergy, the largest utility in the state, said this summer delivered some of the hottest weather on record across the four states it serves, “leading to record-level electricity usage by our customers.” The growing number of days of triple-digit temperatures has put a strain on the energy aid Louisiana gets from the federal government. Even in a year of seeming abundance, when funding is much higher than normal, Hollins said he is about two weeks away from running out of money. On top of the power price increases and extreme heat, Louisianans are also paying for the latest climate disaster. Since Hurricane Ida made landfall last year, utility companies have passed the cost of power line and equipment repairs onto customers, adding to already bloated electricity bills. And while people living in urban areas can seek refuge in air-conditioned movie theaters, malls and libraries, Hollins said that in rural parts of the state, those options don’t exist. “I have folks out there that have $600 and $700 energy bills — and they’re low income,” Hollins said. “I think about the access they may have to somewhere just to cool off, when you get into some of those rural areas, that’s just not there. That’s what keeps me up at night.” In Missouri, energy assistance officials saw such a spike in clients with high electric bills this summer that they doubled the benefit for residents in crisis to $600 — and then doubled it again to $1,200. While policymakers generally agree that a warm home is essential, some still see cooling as a luxury. Most states have policies preventing power shut offs during the winter, but less than half have similar policies for the summer. Though many states now offer assistance year-round, a handful still only help residents with their energy bills in the winter. This approach made sense decades ago, Wolfe said, when home heating costs in the coldest parts of the country could be two or three times the yearly electric bill. But today, heating and cooling bills are “balancing out” in some places, he said, while government aid ...

Takeaways From Tallahassee Let Freedom Ring Florida Politics
Takeaways From Tallahassee — Let Freedom Ring – Florida Politics https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/takeaways-from-tallahassee-let-freedom-ring-florida-politics/ Once again, FSU leads Florida schools on free speech. FIRE ratings Florida State University — located in the shadow of the Capitol during a period when Republicans have questioned whether or not conservatives on college campuses get a chance to speak out — has been named one of the nation’s top colleges for free expression. That’s according to the 2022-2023 College Free Speech Rankings, published by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), which conducts the nation’s largest annual survey on student free expression. FSU was ranked 15th overall — which made it the highest-rated Florida university on the list. FSU is down to 15th from 5th, but that’s mostly thanks to new methodology. “Universities are incredible places of intellectual debate where both students and faculty have the freedom to pursue unfettered academic scholarship and scientific inquiry,” FSU President Richard McCullough said. “We are pleased FIRE continues to recognize Florida State University as one of the nation’s top colleges and best in Florida for free expression.” FIRE surveyed nearly 45,000 students enrolled in four-year degree programs at about 200 schools nationwide. The rankings are based on a composite of several scores, including those that look at student perceptions of the speech climate on their campus. Some of the topics include tolerance for both liberal and conservative speakers. This is the third annual list compiled by FIRE. Last year, FSU was ranked fifth overall, but the organization altered its methodology for the latest rankings, including adding the tolerance criteria. At one point FIRE was critical of the free speech policies at FSU and other schools in the state, saying they were too restrictive. FIRE, however, gave FSU a “green light” on its free speech policies after the university revised them in early 2020. “Providing an environment that fosters the respectful exchange of ideas and civil discourse is a top priority for Florida State University, and we are delighted that our efforts to protect every individual’s right to free speech and expression continue to be recognized by FIRE,” said Amy Hecht, vice president for Student Affairs. FIRE is currently representing a University of South Florida professor as well as a student and student group in a federal lawsuit challenging Florida’s Individual Freedom Act, also known as the “Stop WOKE” act by its supporters. The group contends that the new law endorses censorship on college campuses and violates free speech rights. ___ Coming up, the usual assortment of news, intel and observations from the week that was in Florida’s capital city by Peter Schorsch, Drew Wilson, Renzo Downey, Christine Jordan Sexton and the staff of Florida Politics. But first … Take 5 The “Takeaway 5” — the Top 5 stories from the week that was: Ron DeSantis sends migrants to Martha’s Vineyard — Gov. Ron DeSantis has confirmed Florida on Wednesday flew from Texas two planes of immigrants who crossed the southern border to Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. The act, which occurred on the eve of National Hispanic Heritage Month, seized national headlines and national scrutiny over possible human trafficking violations. Democrats like California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried are calling for the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate the matter. Charlie Crist is also requesting records. Speaking in Niceville on Thursday, DeSantis called the current border situation “indefensible.” “The minute even a small fraction of what those border towns deal with every day is brought to their front door, they all of a sudden go berserk, and they’re so upset that this is happening,” DeSantis said. “It just shows you, their virtue signaling is a fraud.” Ethics Commission finds probable cause Broward Sheriff lied — Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony must go before an administrative judge or agree to a state Commission on Ethics penalty for using his office corruptly when he failed to disclose on official documents that he was arrested for killing an 18-year-old as a juvenile. If the ethics panel recommends it, DeSantis could ultimately suspend Tony over the transgression. “The Commission rejected the recommendation of its advocate and found probable cause to believe Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony misused his public position when he provided false information or did not disclose information,” the Wednesday release said. BOG votes for RayRod as Chancellor — The Board of Governors (BOG) voted unanimously to begin negotiations with Sen. Ray Rodrigues to be the next Chancellor of Florida’s State University System. The hiring decision came at the same meeting where governors honored outgoing Chancellor Marshall Criser. Rodrigues, an Estero Republican who has served in the Legislature for the last 10 years, expressed gratitude and praised Florida’s higher education system as the best in the country. A national search conducted by the BOG resulted in a recommendation of Rodrigues over candidates from all over the world. AHCA fines abortion clinic over wait period law — Florida health officials are fining an Orlando abortion clinic $193,000 for violating a state law requiring a 24-hour waiting period before abortions are performed, according to a case assigned to an administrative judge Tuesday. The Agency for Health Care Administration filed the complaint against the Center of Orlando for Women this summer. State regulators used patient records to determine the clinic performed 193 abortions that violated the state’s 24-hour waiting period rule between late April and early May of this year, the complaint reads. State law allows for a fine of $1,000 per violation of the waiting period law. Providers unprepared for Medicaid minimum wage — Home- and community-based providers responsible for assisting the poor and elderly enrolled in Florida’s Medicaid managed long-term care programs are worried about meeting a new $15-per-hour minimum wage requirement for direct care workers that takes effect Oct. 1. Lawmakers earmarked an additional $135.9 million for Medicaid managed care long-term care plans to cover the increased salary costs. The money will begin to go out to the managed care plans the state relies on to administer that Medicaid program in the next two weeks. But the home- and community-based providers that contract with the managed care plans say the money won’t flow from the health plans to them quickly enough for them to cover the increased salary costs. Workspace Coast DeSantis is making $30 million available to develop the workforce in Florida’s Space Coast. The Governor announced a multi-agency initiative Friday to support industries in the area. The Department of Economic Opportunity, the Department of Education (DOE), CareerSource Florida, Enterprise Florida and Space Florida have partnered to provide workforce education opportunities to the region’s aviation and aerospace, defense, manufacturing, and cybersecurity and information technology industries. Florida is blasting a lot of money into the Space Coast. Image via AP. “I set a goal to make Florida the best state in the nation for workforce education by 2030 — and we are doing that by making investments that expand opportunity and meet industry needs,” DeSantis said in a news release. “Currently there are over 91,000 manufacturing and aerospace technology-related jobs on the space coast and this $30 million investment will build more opportunities for Floridians.” The multi-pronged approach contains $11.5 million through the Job Growth Grant Fund, $9 million through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, $6.4 million through DOE’s Pathways to Career Opportunities Grant Program and $3 million through DOE’s Cyber/IT Pathways Grant Program. “Governor DeSantis continues to build on our success to develop a robust space economy across Florida,” Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez said. “Today’s announcement regarding our innovative funding partnership with our state colleges and workforce boards will position Florida as a leader in the aerospace industry. As Chair of Space Florida’s Board of Directors, I look forward to meeting the needs of future growth of space exploration and aviation technology in Florida.” Road warriors The importance of truckers has received more attention amid supply chain woes and the spike in freight coming into Florida’s ports. Without truckers, many of the products consumers rely on — from gas to groceries — wouldn’t make it more than a mile inland from the coast. The transportation aspect of the profession, of course, is a major focus of “National Truck Driver Appreciation Week.” But Attorney General Ashley Moody wants to make sure Floridians know that truckers do more than fill store shelves — they help her catch the bad guys. Ashley Moody can get behind truckers. Moody this week highlighted the Highway Heroes program, which is a joint effort between her office and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The campaign, launched in October 2020, trains truck drivers to spot and report human trafficking. So far, it’s been a success, equipping thousands of road warriors with knowledge of the telltale signs of heinous crimes. “This week, we say thank you to all of Florida’s professional truck drivers for their hard work and commitment in undertaking one of our economy’s most demanding and important jobs,” Moody said. “Additionally, we show our gratitude to the more than 6,400 drivers who have gone the extra mile to receive expert training through our Highway Heroes program about how to effectively spot and report signs of human trafficking. Our state is a safer place because of these Highway Heroes.” FLHSMV Executive Director Terry Rhodes added, “Florida’s commercial drive...

Factbox-Europe’s Travel Disruption Stretches Into Autumn – Euronews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/factbox-europes-travel-disruption-stretches-into-autumn-euronews/ – Strikes and staff shortages forced airlines to cancel thousands of flights to avoid hours-long queues at major airports in the first summer following widespread COVID lockdowns with disruptions set to continue deep into the autumn. Here is a summary of some of the key developments: LABOURUNREST After sweeping job and pay cuts when COVID-19 brought travel to a grinding halt, staff across the industry from pilots to baggage handlers are asking for big pay increases and better working conditions. ** European flights faced widespread disruption on Sept. 16 as a French air traffic controllers’ strike forced airlines to cancel half of those scheduled to arrive or depart Paris airports and others due to have flown over France. Ryanair said the travel plans of 80,000 passengers had been affected when it had cancelled 420 flights, mainly intended to fly over France. ** Ryanair’s Spanish cabin crew union members plan to strike from Monday to Thursday every week until Jan. 7 to press demands for higher pay and better working conditions. ** Lufthansa and pilots’ union VC reached a deal in a wage dispute on Sept. 6, averting a second strike after the first one forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights. ** EasyJet’s Spain-based pilots walked out for nine days in August from bases in Barcelona, Malaga and Palma in Mallorca. Cabin crew in the country suspended a three-day strike planned for late July after reaching a deal with the carrier. ** SAS and Ryanair in July agreed terms with pilot unions, while British Airways and KLM signed deals with ground staffers. ** Norwegian Air in June agreed a 3.7% pay rise for pilots among other benefits. SCHEDULECUTS, CAPS ON PASSENGERS Airlines including Lufthansa, British Airways, easyJet, KLM and Wizz Air cut thousands of flights from their summer schedules to try and ease disruption, while major airports including London’s Heathrow and Amsterdam’s Schiphol have extended caps on passenger numbers into autumn. ** Schiphol said on Sept. 16 it would reduce daily passenger numbers by 18% until at least Oct. 31 due to labour shortages, mainly in security staff. This will cut average passenger numbers through the airport to 54,500 a day for the rest of September and to 57,000 in October, it said. ** Having previously cut its summer schedule and halted ticket sales for short-haul flights departing Heathrow until mid-August, British Airways said on Aug. 22 it would make further cancellations up to the end of October, after the airport extended its cap on passenger departures. It will also reduce its winter schedule by 8%, impacting around 10,000 flights. ** Meanwhile, London’s Gatwick airport said it would not extend limits on passenger numbers beyond August after it ramped up security staffing, while a Lufthansa board member has said the worst of the flight chaos was over for the airline. HIRINGANDINCENTIVES Industry executives say it is hard to recruit for often physically demanding, relatively low paid work at airports often located out of town. Training new hires and getting them security clearance also takes months. ** Schiphol, one of Europe’s busiest airports, agreed to pay 15,000 cleaners, baggage handlers and security staff 5.25 euros ($5.25) extra per hour during the summer. It needed to hire 500 security staff after beginning the season with around 10,000 fewer workers than before the pandemic. ** Airport security company ICTS, which operates at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle, offered a one-off 180 euro bonus to those delaying their vacation until after Sept. 15 and 150 euros for staff who sign up new recruits, a CGT union representative said. ** Only around 150 airport workers from Turkey were hired by German airports, far fewer than initially expected. They will help with baggage handling under temporary contracts that will run through early November. ($1 = 0.9978 euros)

In throwing out Jovan Vavic’s fraud and bribery conviction, U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani found some evidence introduced by the government to be unreliable and that prosecutors erred in their argument to jurors about some of the alleged bribe money. Vavic was convicted in April after being arrested in March 2019 in the headline-grabbing “Operation Varsity Blues” investigation. He had guided USC’s men’s and women’s water polo teams to 16 national championships. UNDATED (AP) — The 25th-ranked Oregon Ducks play their second ranked opponent of the season when No. 12 Brigham Young makes its first trip to Autzen Stadium since 1990 on Saturday. Oregon has won 29 straight nonconference home games, the second-longest active streak in FBS, including seven against ranked teams. Bo Nix had five touchdown passes against Eastern Washington last week after throwing two interceptions in the opener vs. Georgia. BYU won all five games against Pac-12 teams last season, including two against ranked teams. Jaren Hall is 7-1 as a starting quarterback against ranked teams. UNDATED (AP) — BYU’s double-overtime victory over Baylor moved the Cougars up nine spots to No. 12 in the AP Top 25 and gave the team a boost nationally in its final year as an FBS independent. But the attention quickly shifted to Saturday’s game at Oregon, and the latest opportunity to make BYU’s season special. The Ducks are coming off a 70-14 win at home over Eastern Washington. The rout helped Oregon move on from its disappointing season-opening loss to Georgia and popped the Ducks back into the rankings at No. 25. LOS ANGELES (AP) — No. 7 Southern California’s roaring start under Lincoln Riley has caught the college football world’s attention and driven the Trojans to their highest ranking in five years. Fresno State is exactly the type of opponent that could put the brakes on all the excitement around a rebuilding project that’s humming along smoothly. Caleb Williams looks to remain unbeaten on the West Coast when the quarterback leads USC back to the Coliseum to face coach Jeff Tedford, quarterback Jake Haener and the Bulldogs, who came agonizingly close to an upset of Oregon State. SEATTLE (AP) — No. 11 Michigan State and Washington have looked great for the first two weeks of the season against lesser competition. Now both teams seek validation when the Huskies host the Spartans on Saturday. Michigan State beat up on Akron and Western Michigan to open the season. Washington thumped Kent State and Portland State. A win for Washington would be big in coach Kalen DeBoer’s first season in charge. A win for the Spartans would be just as significant in proving they are worthy of their high ranking. UNDATED (AP) — No. 14 Utah found its quarterback in Cameron Rising a year ago in a three-overtime loss against San Diego State when he came off the bench to spark the Utes. Rising has gone 10-3 as a starter since taking over. He went on to guide the Utes to a Pac-12 title and a spot in the Rose Bowl. The Utes enter this year’s game against the Aztecs at Rice-Eccles Stadium as a 20 1/2-point favorite. The Utes are chasing after win No. 300 against Mountain West teams. Utah was a member of the  league before joining the Pac-12 in 2011. UNDATED (AP) — Marcus Freeman has lost his first three games since taking over as Notre Dame’s coach. His fourth chance comes Saturday when the Fighting Irish host unbeaten California. It’s the first time the teams have met since 1967. The biggest problem for Notre Dame has been a stagnant offense. The Irish rank No. 117 out of 131 FBS teams in scoring offense and total offense. And this week they’ll have a new quarterback running the show as Drew Pyne replaces the injured Tyler Buchner. UNDATED (AP) — Oregon State plays Montana State on Saturday at Portland’s Providence Park. The Beavers haven’t played in Portland since 1986, when they faced UCLA. Oregon State is 2-0 for the first time since 2014, coming off wins over Boise State and Fresno State. Montana State is coming off a 63-13 victory over Morehead State in Bozeman. The Bobcats beat current Pac-12 member Colorado 19-10 back in 2006. That was Montana State’s last victory over an FBS team. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Why Ethereum Could See Huge Inflows Of Fund From Institutional ESG Investors – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/why-ethereum-could-see-huge-inflows-of-fund-from-institutional-esg-investors-cryptonews/ Source: Unsplash With Ethereum’s transition to proof-of-stake (PoS) now behind us, more people are pointing to the network’s environmental benefits, saying ESG-minded investors will flock to ETH as they learn more about it. Following Ethereum’s transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake – an event known as the Merge – the network will use 99.95% less energy compared to before, according to the Ethereum Foundation. Additionally, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin also retweeted a claim on Thursday saying “the Merge will reduce worldwide electricity consumption by 0.2%.” Bitcoin, by comparison, continues to rely on the much more energy-intensive proof-of-work system as its consensus mechanism. Not surprisingly, the promise of significantly lower energy usage by Ethereum is attractive to ESG investors, who consider it important to reduce energy use and – in particular – carbon emissions. According to Conor Svensson, CEO and Founder of Web3 Labs, the switch to proof-of-stake for Ethereum could even make Bitcoin and other networks that remain on proof-of-work appear less attractive to these investors. “If you’re a corporate looking to invest in cryptocurrencies, given the ESG narrative I imagine a lot of them will be slightly hesitant about getting exposure to Bitcoin when there’s this other asset which doesn’t use huge amounts of power,” Svensson was cited in a recent Evening Standard article as saying, while also noting: “I do believe that Ethereum will long-term overtake Bitcoin.” ESG is short for environmental, social and governance, and so-called ESG investing has become extremely popular among both retail investors and financial institutions in recent years. According to a Bloomberg report on ESG investing, assets under management by ESG funds are set to reach $41trn by the end of 2022, with ESG-related assets now accounting for one in three dollars managed globally. Source: Bloomberg ETH is the world’s second-most valuable cryptoasset with a market capitalization at the time of writing of just over $173bn. And although some believe that ETH will one day overtake BTC as the most valuable cryptoasset, an event dubbed “the flippening,” ETH’s market cap still remains less than half that of BTC. ETH fell in price immediately following the Merge, and was as of Friday at 9:50 pm UTC down 4.2% for the past 24 hours to a price of $1,435.
