Research Shows Spirituality Linked To Better Heart Health Among African Americans – Milwaukee Courier Weekly Newspaper https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/research-shows-spirituality-linked-to-better-heart-health-among-african-americans-milwaukee-courier-weekly-newspaper/ By Karen Stokes Church attendance and prayer may boost heart health among African American adults, according to a study in the Journal of the American Heart Association. The study shows nearly 3000 African American adults, who reported more frequent church attendance, private prayer and “feeling God’s presence” were more likely to meet the American Heart Association’s key metrics for optimal cardiovascular health, compared to others reporting less frequent religious participation or no such beliefs. The key metrics for optimal cardiovascular health according to the American Heart Association Life’s Simple 7 metrics are based on smoking, diet, physical activity, body mass index, blood pressure, total cholesterol and fasting glucose with an 8th metric, sleep. The Jackson Heart Study is the largest single-site, community-based investigation of cardiovascular disease among African American adults in the U.S. On average, participants were 54 years old at study enrollment, and 66% were women. The ongoing study, initiated in 1998, includes more than 5,000 adults ages 21- to 84-years-old who identify as African American and living in the tri-county area of Jackson, Mississippi. Pastor Veloris Brooks-Mann, Chaplaincy Program Coordinator with the Salvation Army Milwaukee County, believes strong religious beliefs have beneficial impact on heart health. Veloris and Frank Mann (Photo/Veloris Mann) “It truly does, my story is I went to the hospital with 90% clogged arteries needing triple bypass surgery. I believed in God and believed that God sustained me all those months. I wasn’t feeling good and wasn’t getting the care I needed. God sustained me and kept me until the doctors found out what was wrong with me because after they found what was wrong with me the doctor told me I probably had about a week left then the mass heart attack would have taken me out. I believe that was due only to faith and prayer that God did not let that happen,” Veloris said. According to the American Heart Associations’ 2017 “Cardiovascular Health in African Americans” scientific statement, African Americans have poorer overall cardiovascular health than non-Hispanic white people, and death from cardiovascular diseases is higher in African American adults than white adults. “Spirituality improves your quality of life because you have a source or resource which is God in order to cast your cares on,” Veloris said. Throughout scripture, there are over 100 Bible verses from the Old and New Testament on God’s guidance to good health, as it is considered of high importance. Two scriptures that Veloris and her husband Frank Mann look to are 3 John 1:2 and Hebrews 12:11. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace. This is for those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:11 “This gives the three components you need and one of them is good health,” said Frank. “I’ve been training since I was 15 in health and fitness, I’m a professional bodybuilder but the key thing is you have to have discipline. I believe if you take care of yourself, if you do your part, the Lord is always going to do his.” Doing his part, Frank at 53, recently placed top 5 in the 2022 IFBB Pro League World at the Masters BodyBuilding Competition in July 2022. He has been dedicated and disciplined for 40 years in health and fitness. “I did that competition to show everybody you can still achieve good health you just have to put in the work,” said Frank. This is the only body that we have. We need to make health a priority.” “Health professionals and researchers should acknowledge the importance of religious and spiritual influences in the lives of African Americans – who tend to be highly religious,” said the study’s lead author LaPrincess C. Brewer, M.D., M.P.H., a preventive cardiologist and assistant professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. “With religious and spiritual beliefs factored into our approaches, we may make major breakthroughs in fostering the relationship between patients and physicians and between community members and scientists to build trust and sociocultural understanding of this population.” “Our findings highlight the substantial role that culturally tailored health promotion initiatives and recommendations for lifestyle change may play in advancing health equity,” she added. “The cultural relevance of interventions may increase their likelihood of influencing cardiovascular health and also the sustainability and maintenance of healthy lifestyle changes.” Frank is also a personal trainer. His mission is to help the people of God live a healthier life through the Word of God. He believes that we are to be in good health and shape for the Bible refers many times to the condition of the WHOLE man/person. “Health and spirituality go hand in hand,” Frank said. Frank and Veloris have a heart to guide people to better health. To reach Frank for Church Group Fitness call Faith and Glory Fitness (414) 252-4855. “This is especially important for socioeconomically disenfranchised communities faced with multiple challenges and stressors. Religiosity and spirituality may serve as a buffer to stress and have therapeutic purposes or support self-empowerment to practice healthy behaviors and seek preventive health services,” Brewer said.

The Best Spatulas For Eggs According To A Chef Food & Wine
The Best Spatulas For Eggs According To A Chef Food & Wine
The Best Spatulas For Eggs, According To A Chef – Food & Wine https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-best-spatulas-for-eggs-according-to-a-chef-food-wine/ We love the OXO Good Grips Silicone Spatula Set for its comfortable handle, ease of cleaning, and ability to tackle any style of eggs, from scrambled to over-easy. Published on September 16, 2022 We independently research, test, review, and recommend the best products—learn more about our process. If you buy something through our links, we may earn a commission. Making scrambled eggs is where many of us start our cooking journeys — and it’s also when we discover that the tools and equipment we use in the kitchen have a big impact on the food we cook. No matter what time of day it is, eggs are a versatile and inexpensive protein to incorporate into meals, but to cook them well, the right spatula is just as important as the right pan. The type of spatula you choose for making eggs is dependent on both the style of egg you’re cooking and the pan you’re cooking it in, so we’ve rounded up a variety of offerings that will enable you to get delicious results every time. From silicone to metal, here are our top choices for crafting everything from expertly-flipped fried eggs to the perfect poach, starting with our winner: the OXO Good Grips Silicone Spatula Set. Our Picks Best Overall: OXO Good Grips Silicone Spatula Set Best Budget: Joie Lil Flip Egg Spatula Best for Scrambled Eggs: Rubbermaid High-Heat Silicone Spatula Best for Omelets: OXO Good Grips Flexible Omelet Turner Best for Flipping: Di Oro Chef Series Standard Flexible Turner Spatula Best Metal: Mann Kitchen Professional Grade Stainless Steel Spatula Best for Poached Eggs: Tenta Kitchen Stainless Steel Skimming Spatula Best Overall: OXO Good Grips Silicone Spatula Set Also available at OXO. Pros: This set is versatile, comfortable to hold, a good value, and easy to clean and store. Cons: One of the spatulas is white, which might show stains. In our test kitchen, our professional product testers analyzed a variety of spatulas, and this set was named the winner of best versatility because it “has everything you’d want in a set, covering all bases for whatever you need it for.” We selected it as our best overall pick for spatulas for eggs because its versatility makes it perfect for flipping a single egg, scrambling a large batch, and turning an omelet with ease. The set comes with three spatulas, including a mini curved one, a large curved one, and a medium-sized spoon spatula. The only con is that one of them is white, which might show stains over time but isn’t a dealbreaker in our book. Our testers said that the spatulas were easy to clean, comfortable to hold, and that the “handle length felt really proportional.” The spoon spatula also works to scoop for serving, so that you don’t need to dirty an additional utensil, and the flat-ended ones can also be used for bowl scraping and mixing. Material: Silicone and nylon Length: 13.5 inches Care: Dishwasher-safe Best Budget: Joie Lil Flip Egg Spatula Pros: It’s affordable, easy to store, family-friendly, and suitable for flipping eggs. Cons: It’s on the smaller side, so it’s not the best fit for large batches. Not your average spatula: This utensil has holes on the surface and a cute egg on the handle, but most importantly, it performs well with small foods like eggs. It’s sturdy, safe on nonstick cookware, and heat resistant up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. For kids looking to help in the kitchen or young people learning their first dishes, it’s an excellent option for them to use as it has a fun design and fits nicely in little hands. Because of its compact size, this spatula is best for cooking one or two eggs at a time rather than a large pan-full. Material: Nylon Length: 7.87 inches Care: Hand-wash Best for Scrambled Eggs: Rubbermaid High-Heat Silicone Spatula Pros: We love the blade’s divet that allows you to rest the spatula on the pan while patiently waiting for your eggs to cook. Cons: The white blade discolors over time. As our favorite choice for scrambled eggs, the Rubbermaid silicone spatula has a cool-touch handle that keeps your hands from overheating as you stir — not to mention, a staple in professional kitchens. The divet on the blade allows you to set the spatula down on a bowl, a pan, or a resting spoon without creating a mess, and it’s heat resistant up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, so you don’t have to worry about it burning or melting if it’s against a pan for a few moments. If you prefer longer handles, there are two other size options available. Material: Silicone Length: 9.5 inches Care: Dishwasher-safe Related: We Tested the Best Egg Pans for Perfect Omelets, Scrambled Eggs, and More Best for Omelets: OXO Good Grips Flexible Omelet Turner Also available at Bed, Bath, & Beyond. Pros: It has a long blade with a thin edge, so it easily slides under delicate foods. Cons: It’s not the most suitable for cooking eggs in other ways. Mastering a quality omelet is no easy task, but with the right spatula, you can achieve a flawless fold. This OXO Good Grips turner has a silicone blade with the perfect balance of flexibility and firmness to ensure your omelet holds together and doesn’t spill out. We appreciate its thin edge, as it helps you effortlessly slide under so no eggy bits get left behind as you flip. Heat safe up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit, the spatula is also great for cooking fish and other long, narrow foods. Material: Silicone and stainless steel Length: 13.4 inches Care: Dishwasher-safe Best for Flipping: Di Oro Chef Series Standard Flexible Turner Spatula Pros: The blade is wide and heat-resistant up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. Cons: It’s slightly unwieldy compared to other options. There’s nothing worse than breaking an egg yolk while flipping it over. To prevent this from happening, you want a wide spatula that lets you get nearly the entire egg encased on it to keep your yolk safe, and that’s where this Di Oro turner excels. The blade is three inches wide, thin enough to slide under eggs, and is heat resistant up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. The entire spatula is made from durable stainless steel and then the blade and handle are encased with silicone that’s safe for both your food and cookware. Material: Silicone and stainless steel Length: 11.8 inches Care: Dishwasher-safe Best Metal: Mann Kitchen Professional Grade Stainless Steel Spatula Pros: This heavy-duty spatula is great for flipping eggs on flat-top griddles and cast iron pans. Cons: It’s not compatible with nonstick cookware. If you’re making eggs in a cast iron pan or on a griddle, a silicone spatula might not be strong enough to get underneath them completely. This Mann Kitchen spatula is up for that task, and it’s large enough that you can make a family-sized scramble in a snap. Thanks to its heavy-duty construction, it’s designed to last for years and can handle a variety of cooking tasks. It’s the right size and shape for making smash burgers and sturdy enough for flipping large steaks. It’s important to note that stainless steel spatulas are not compatible with nonstick cookware. Material: Stainless steel and wood Length: 11.5 inches Care: Hand-wash Related: We Cooked 68 Omelets to Test the Best Nonstick Pans—These Are Our Favorites Best for Poached Eggs: Tenta Kitchen Stainless Steel Skimming Spatula Pros: It has a curved blade with slots, making it ideal for scooping eggs from hot water. Cons: The edges are fairly sharp, so be careful when storing and grabbing it. The Tenta Kitchen spatula is our favorite option for poached eggs because it’s ideal for scooping and draining food from hot liquids. The stainless steel slotted spatula is a nice balance of flat and curved, so it’s easy to locate your eggs and remove them from the water. This type of spatula is also useful for straining foods, such as pasta and beans, and when removing fried foods from hot oil. The long handle ensures that you won’t have to get too close to piping hot water, broth, or oil. Material: Stainless steel Length: 13 inches Care: Dishwasher safe Our Favorite We selected the OXO Good Grips Silicone Spatula Set as our best overall pick because it’s an excellent value, easy to use and clean, and enables you to cook numerous different types of egg styles without issue. When analyzed in our test kitchen by professionals, it earned a 4.8/5 rating for its versatility and comfortable handle. Factors to Consider Type of Eggs How do you like your eggs cooked? That popular diner question should be your main consideration when deciding on which spatula is right for you. If you prefer oozy sunny-side-up eggs or over-easy eggs, a wide spatula is a must. For omelet fans, you’ll want a spatula with a long, narrow blade and a thin edge. Scrambled egg lovers should reach for silicone spatulas that work well with nonstick pans. Pan Material Silicone spatulas are flexible and work nicely on most types of pans, while stainless steel ones offer superior durability but can’t be used with nonstick cookware. Because eggs are a notoriously sticky food, you’ll want to cook them in a pan that doesn’t present challenges. For most, that means a nonstick one, which makes silicone a top choice for many. Versatility While there’s plenty to be said for one-use tools when you have a niche need, spatulas for eggs can be used for so much more than whipping up breakfast. Some spatulas also work well for grilling, while others are great for mixing up cake and brownie batters. No matter what spatula you choose to make your eggs with, we can guarantee that it will come in handy for many other cooking situations. Q+A Do eggs stick to silicone spatulas? No, eggs shouldn’t stick to silicone spatulas. The biggest advantage of silicone material is that liquids and solids slide off it easily, including eggs. What’s the best way to fry an egg? Nicaraguas Dictatorship Is Criminalizing Democracy And Fueling Migration To The US The Hill
Nicaraguas Dictatorship Is Criminalizing Democracy And Fueling Migration To The US The Hill
Nicaragua’s Dictatorship Is Criminalizing Democracy And Fueling Migration To The US – The Hill https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/nicaraguas-dictatorship-is-criminalizing-democracy-and-fueling-migration-to-the-us-the-hill/ Less than a year ago, Republicans and Democrats came together to support the RENANCER Act to limit the catastrophic dictatorship of Nicaragua under the regime of President Daniel Ortega and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo. In Nicaragua, businesses are extorted by mafia-like police officers, Catholic leaders are persecuted for supporting democracy, residents (even Americans) are detained and sentenced for decades, and civil society organizations have been shuttered. This family dynasty has criminalized democracy, ensuring that freedom of expression, political participation, movement and beliefs are legally eliminated. Nicaragua’s president and family have turned Nicaragua into a rogue state. The Ortega-Murillo regime has eliminated all forms of political and social pluralism. The termination of nearly 2,000 non-profit organizations, of which 600 were regularly active was another act against freedom of association. These organizations were working on much needed social development projects, half of which were based on education. The material losses — in a country where children have few opportunities, and the average education is below fourth grade — amount to at least $200 million USD a year (excluding the expulsion of 56 international non-profits) affecting nearly 1 million beneficiaries. However, the impact is not only material, but ideological. The regime, in particular Ortega’s wife, has redefined the rules of education, subordinated learning to the dynasty’s creed of obedience, banned books and literature as sacrilege, even claiming that deviating from the regime constitutes exclusion from public services (including access to health) and a criminal act of conspiracy against the state.  Nicaragua has also strengthened its military alliance with Russia and Iran in ways that reminisce of the Cold War, including an offensive if not insulting barrage of attacks on the United States. The consequences are dire for Nicaraguans, Central Americans and, through desperate immigration, the United States. Nicaraguans do not accept the status quo: According to public opinion polls, political prisoners are the most popular individuals in Nicaragua, while Ortega and Murillo are unpopular, even feared and despised.  But those who can afford it, vote with their feet and migrate:  Since 2018, at least  200,000 people have escaped Nicaragua (that’s conservatively 5 percent of its population), especially after the electoral fraud in November 2021.  The majority of those people have come to the United States. The Biden administration has witnessed firsthand the attacks on the press, religious authorities, electoral independence, academic freedom, and pluralism, as well as attacks on the United States. Ortega has accused the United States of conspiring against the regime.  The U.S. response has included sanctions to 22 mid-level government officials and less than 100 tweets condemning the repression. Foreign policy official stress their commitment to take more steps, pulling resources from their policy toolbox — and for good reason. At first, the U.S. response to the magnitude of this tragedy seems disproportionately minimal to the damage and to national interest.  The NICA Act from 2018 and RENACER Act passed in 2021 are important tools containing at least eight steps to put pressure on the regime’s impunity.  RENACER Act calls for a review of Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), for multilateral engagement, for sanctions against those violating human rights and participating in corruption, to restrict funding to international financial institutions. It also calls for assessing Russia’s military alliance with Nicaragua. Nicaragua has broken from CAFTA in several respects: It has violated labor and environmental rights, as well as restricted market financial access. The government also continues to receive disbursements from loans provided by the Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank, half of them to finance infrastructure and public works that feed into clientelism and economic favors. Multilaterally, it has broken from membership in the Organization of American States and the Democratic Charter. The Biden administration’s toolbox includes provisions, such as sanctions to an extended number of members of the Ortega regime’s repressive circle of power: those persecuting priests, women, children, academics, journalists, youth, the elderly.  The U.S. is within its rights to impose penalties to the Nicaraguan state for not answering to its labor rights violations and to argue at the Inter-American Development Bank and World Bank to suspend disbursements to the government, vote, not abstain, against loans to the regime.  The U.S. can secure the region with a stronger military security alliance, urgently to defend the Democratic Charter and the Inter-American Human Rights Charter, as well as form a multilateral taskforce in support of democracy. Other neighboring countries are using Nicaragua’s impunity as example of how far they can go without international pressure.  This is a joint responsibility for Republicans and Democrats, as it is the consequences of living close to a pariah state, the results of which are disrupting, destabilizing and go against the values we claim to support.  It is morally and politically indefensible that more prisoners, migrants and vulnerable people in Nicaragua have to face the regime’s impunity before U.S. responds accordingly. Manuel Orozco is a senior fellow and the director of the Migration, Remittances and Development Program at the Inter-American Dialogue, a U.S.-based policy think tank. He also serves as a senior fellow at Harvard University’s Center for International Development and as a senior adviser with the International Fund for Agricultural Development. He works directly with migrant organizations and nationalities in several countries and provides advice on diaspora engagement and financial independence.

Nine Dead After Flooding Hits Italys Marche Region The Washington Post
Nine Dead After Flooding Hits Italy’s Marche Region – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/nine-dead-after-flooding-hits-italys-marche-region-the-washington-post/ ROME — Several hours of extraordinary rainfall triggered flooding across a stretch of central Italy early Friday and left at least nine dead, with several others missing, according to authorities. As the rainfall stopped, rescue crews scrambled through mud and around fallen trees to look for survivors. Some people had taken refuge on rooftops or held onto branches amid the flooding. Italian media reported several searing accounts, including a mother and daughter who were believed to have been swept away while getting out of their car. “All citizens are ordered to not leave their homes and go to higher floors,” one hard-hit town wrote in an all-caps bulletin on Facebook as the high water surged. While Italy has had deadlier floods over the decades, the event marked yet another example of extreme weather, following a record drought that had sapped lakes and rivers and devastated crops. Fabrizio Curcio, the head of Italy’s civil protection department, said the flooded area over a matter of hours saw “about one-third of the rainfall you’d usually get in a year.” “There were moments of terror with truly extraordinary levels of water,” Curcio said. A spokesman for the civil protection department said the area had been hit with 400 millimeters, or about 15.75 inches, of rain. While it is difficult to connect any single event to climate change, experts say moments of extreme weather are becoming more common — including in Italy, which has seen melting Alpine glaciers, summer wildfires and rising seas that are chipping away at coastal cities. In a visit to the flooded region, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said flooding risks had become an “emergency with climate change” and would require steps for prevention, including infrastructure investment. “It also means tackling climate change,” Draghi said. The flooding Friday stretched across the Marche region, from the inland hills to the Adriatic coast. Some mayors of the hard-hit towns noted that there had been no indication that such an extreme event might be coming. “[There was] only a yellow alert from the civil protection for wind and rain,” Maurizio Greci, the mayor of Sassoferrato, told Italian radio. “Nothing could foretell such a disaster.” In a news release, government authorities said that among the nine dead, two people had yet to be identified and could be among the four people who were officially missing. Photos from Friday showed people beginning the cleanup work, trudging through mud, holding shovels, drying off belongings. The head of the Marche region, Francesco Acquaroli, wrote on his verified Facebook page that he’d spoken with Italian President Sergio Mattarella as well as Draghi, who offered support for “every necessary need.” “The pain over what happened is deep,” Acquaroli wrote.

Microsoft Edge News Feed Infiltrated By Tech Support Scammers – TechRadar https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/microsoft-edge-news-feed-infiltrated-by-tech-support-scammers-techradar/ Home News Software (Image credit: Microsoft) Scammers are planting malicious advertisements in the Microsoft Edge news feed, according to new research from antivirus and VPN provider Malwarebytes. In a blog post (opens in new tab) by its threat intelligence team, the company claims that the scheme, set up to “direct victims to tech support scam pages”, has been in motion for at least two months. This particular scam operation has been particularly effective because of Microsoft Edge’s news feed doubling as the web browser’s homepage, increasing the chances that users may be lured by “shocking or bizarre stories” that have been placed there by attackers. Fake news in Microsoft Edge Once a user has clicked on a false news story, a script is run to decide if a user should be targeted by the scam. According to Malwarebytes, the script aims to filter out “bots, VPNs, and geolocations that are not of interest,” and that these machines are instead sent to a harmless decoy page. “This scheme is meant to trick innocent users with fake browser locker pages, very well known and used by tech support scammers”, wrote Malwarebytes, in reference to the scourge of malvertising, whereby threat actors serve up fake advertisements to users in order to compromise their devices. The scam operation relies on an ever-changing list of malicious domains served up by DigitalOcean’s cloud-based web hosting infrastructure, making the threat difficult to stamp out completely. Malwarebytes claimed that, over the course of 24 hours, over 200 different hostnames were being used to scam tech support pages. It also noted the considerable efforts to obscure identifying information (known as fingerprinting) about servers and devices involved in the campaign. The company did, however, connect one of the collected domains, previously reported as suspicious (opens in new tab), to Sumit Kalra, listed as a director for “Mws Software Services Private Limited”, a Delhi-based company working in “Computer and related activities”. It also linked Kalra to a number of other domains involved with this particular campaign, which Malwarebytes has said is “one of the biggest we are seeing in terms of telemetry noise”.  TechRadar Pro has asked Kalra, Mws Software Services Private Limited, and Microsoft for comment. Default browsers and malvertising Microsoft Edge is the default web browser on Windows 10 and 11, making it a prime target for scammers looking to target the largest number of unsuspecting users who are less aware of what measures they can take to stay secure online. Users looking to protect themselves from fake tech support scams and other threat actors may wish to install one of the best free VPNs, consider an anonymous web browser, or simply change their Microsoft Edge homepage from the default news feed. They should also maintain a healthy skepticism when interacting with content from an unfamiliar or disreputable source. If a news story sounds too good to be true, thinking twice before clicking on it can go a long way. Clicking on a fake advertisement can result in a device being infected with malware. But scammers sometimes just want users to believe they’ve been infected, and follow through with what the page is requesting of them. This may be to call a certain phone number, or send money to an unknown actor – the latter being a form of ransomware.  To stay safe, users should also be vigilant about the pages making these requests. Usually, it’s antivirus software, not a web browser, that reports on threats to a device’s security.  Here’s a list of the best VPNs for PCs Luke Hughes holds the role of Graduate Writer at TechRadar Pro, producing news, features and deals content across topics ranging from computing to cloud services, cybersecurity, data privacy and business software.

Business Beat: Virtual Job Fair Scheduled For Sept. 28 – Oneonta Daily Star https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/business-beat-virtual-job-fair-scheduled-for-sept-28-oneonta-daily-star/ A free virtual job fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28. Businesses and job seekers from across an eleven-county region are invited to attend: Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, Fulton, Montgomery, Schoharie, Onondaga and Cortland counties are included, according to a media release. The online event is sponsored by the Workforce Development Board of Herkimer, Madison and Oneida counties’ Regional Apprenticeship Development and Readiness (RADAR) grant project. The nearly $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, funded by the Apprenticeship Building America grant, will develop job training programs that will help connect local job seekers with high-demand industries, with individuals with disabilities as the primary participants, the release said. “RADAR will help connect people with disabilities with pre-apprenticeship training and registered apprenticeship opportunities,” Project Director Sommer Edwards said. “New York has a 36.0% point gap in the employment rates of disabled and non-disabled adults. Not only are apprenticeships needed to meet employer demand, but also to address income equality for people with disabilities. If people with disabilities fail to get good-paying jobs, they lose, taxpayers lose, and employers needing workers lose.” The job fair utilizes Premier Virtual platform. Platform training is available before the event, and there are also training materials located within the system. The link to register is: https://pvapi.premiervirtual.com/s/xm62lW. Businesses should select “Organization.” Job Seekers should select “Attendee.” RADAR staff will be at the job fair to speak with individuals who are interested in participating in the program. To learn more about apprenticeship programs, visit https://tinyurl.com/4n2h7uw2 BJ’s clubs to accept SNAP EBT BJ’s Wholesale Club announced that SNAP EBT payments will be accepted across all of its clubs, chainwide, when members use their card at checkout on BJs.com or the BJ’s mobile app.  “Over the course of the last few months, we’ve been actively working to expand our online SNAP EBT payment options for our members across all the states we currently do business in,” Monica Schwartz, EVP and chief digital officer, said. “We’re excited to announce that SNAP EBT payments are accepted online chainwide, allowing us to offer even more flexibility and convenience to all of our members.” When using SNAP EBT cards to shop online at BJs.com or the BJ’s mobile app, members have the option of selecting from multiple delivery methods including free pickup, shipping, and same-day delivery. From small house fires to large natural disasters, we go wherever we’re needed,” said Kevin Coffey, regional chief executive officer, American Red Cross Eastern New York Region. “Our work is made possible by our generous donors. We are so grateful to the Price Chopper/Market 32 customers for their generosity and the Golub family for their ongoing support for our mission. This support ensures we can be there 24/7 bringing hope and healing when it’s needed most.”  From hurricanes to fires to floods, the American Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters each year and 95% of its disaster relief workers are volunteers, the release said.

Exercise And Education: Diabetes Prevention Work Helps Local Latino Children, Families – ASU News Now https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/exercise-and-education-diabetes-prevention-work-helps-local-latino-children-families-asu-news-now/ September 16, 2022 Study headed by ASU professor published in Journal of American Medical Association Derek Parra’s eating plan was fairly simple. Whatever his mom, Miriam, put on the plate, he would eat — sometimes up to four portions. In-between meals, he would down unhealthy snacks, sodas or juices with a high sugar content. Parra still can put away the food. He’s 15 years old, after all. But the Valley teenager is making wiser decisions to feed that teenage appetite, drinking water instead of soda – with the occasional Dr. Pepper mixed in – and eating more vegetables and fruit. Miriam is helping as well, cooking with less oil and encouraging Derek and her other children to get their sugar from fruit instead of candy. They’ve fallen off the wagon at times, but they’ve also learned what to eat and, just as importantly, how to eat. “We’re very conscious about what we’re eating,” Miriam said through an interpreter. “That information has stuck with us.” Those healthier choices — and the education needed to change habits — are exactly what Gabriel Shaibi, a professor in Arizona State University’s Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation, hoped to accomplish when he launched a program six years ago to help Valley Latino children, ages 12 to 18, who were predisposed to diabetes. The results of the study, which was boosted in 2021 with a $3.3 million grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, were published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Among the findings: There was a 10% improvement in glucose tolerance (a measure of how kids process sugar) after 12 months. There was a 37% increase in insulin sensitivity (a measure of how well the body uses insulin) after six months. The kids in the study reported a 10% increase in their weight-related quality of life after 12 months. “What we learned is that these kids, when you provide them access to preventative services, they can do better,” said Shaibi, the principal investigator on the project. Shaibi said the impetus for the study was data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that showed Latino children are predisposed for diabetes at a rate between 1.5 and 1.7 times higher than white children. “We designed a study that says, ‘You know, we appreciate that there’s disparities in the community,’” Shaibi said. “And these disparities are not just about the haves or have-nots but these kids also have a really difficult time accessing traditional health care services.” The program, which included 117 families from around the Valley, was a collaborative effort between ASU, Valley of the Sun YMCA, St. Vincent de Paul and Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the latter two of which recruited families and helped design the curriculum. The dual focuses: Education and exercise. “The real key is how do I implement this into my day-to-day life,” said Micah Olson, medical director for the Type 2 diabetes program at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and a co-author and co-investigator on the study. “And that is not easy, especially in the environment that we live in today, where calories come very cheap and it’s hard to move our bodies the way we used to. “So the hypothesis of the study was: Can we deliver this information in a way that’s culturally focused and delivered by teachers that culturally speak the language and would that be more effective in having kids and families make the kind of changes that we’re asking them to do, compared to what we might do in the halls of a medical clinic?” Parents and their children made their way to the downtown Phoenix YMCA once a week to do physical exercises, learn how to make better food choices, and both modify and keep track of their behavior. The exercise programs were designed by YMCA trainers, and bilingual health educators and dieticians from St. Vincent’s and Phoenix Children’s Hospital were on hand to help families that didn’t speak English. “It’s all delivered in the community, by the community, for the community,” Shaibi said. “We think that is pretty unique because it’s not, ‘Hey, come to our clinic at ASU.’ It’s, ‘We’re going to bring the research to the community where it can best be implemented.’” The families were given assignments, one of which was being handed coupons for Food City and having to find ingredients for a healthy meal at less than $5 per person. “That becomes their homework,” Shaibi said. “Can you go out, shop for and prepare a healthy meal on that budget? That was eye opening to some of these families.” The following week, the families would talk about the healthy meal they made and how they were surprised they could do so on such a limited budget. It’s all delivered in the community, by the community, for the community. — Gabriel Shaibi, professor, Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation “We made it a little bit of a competition as well,” said Elvia Lish, director of the Ivy Center for Family Wellness at St. Vincent de Paul. “We’d tell them, ‘It has to be delicious, but it has to be cost-effective.’ And then whoever has the lowest cost meals won the prize or the game. They came up with really great examples that highlighted you don’t have to eat really expensive foods in order to be healthy.” The families were also given healthy recipes they could cook. “It gave me a sense of nutrition, like certain things that I was not supposed to eat too much of and how to eat a balanced diet,” Miriam Parra said. Libby Corral, chief operating officer of the YMCA, said the shared experiences of the families brought them together in a way individual diet, exercise and nutrition programs could not. “They really developed that sense of community,” Corral said. “We had these groups of families and kids that have the same issues and are able to learn from each other and support each other. They built friendships and relationships that outlasted the program itself.” Shaibi’s hope is that the study has generational benefits for families. The children who exercise and develop healthy eating habits today will be the parents who teach their own children those behaviors tomorrow. To do its part, the YMCA has given all 117 families in the study free six-month memberships. “We know these types of diseases travel in families,” Shaibi said. “If you are a kid whose parents have diabetes, you’re more likely to get diabetes. But we also know that prevention and behaviors track in families. If your parents were active, you’re more likely to be active and so on.” Although the study is complete, the work isn’t. Shaibi and his team have received an additional round of funding to continue the research and target entire households over the next five years. “We’re trying to have a bigger effect,” he said. “It can be mom, dad, cousins, grandparents, whoever’s living in the household.” Top photo: Participants in the program after a fitness class at the YMCA.

College Football Schedule Games 2022: What To Watch In Week 3 TV Channels Saturday Kickoff Times CBS Sports
College Football Schedule, Games 2022: What To Watch In Week 3, TV Channels, Saturday Kickoff Times – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/college-football-schedule-games-2022-what-to-watch-in-week-3-tv-channels-saturday-kickoff-times-cbs-sports/ Massive out-of-conference showdowns headline the college football slate on Saturday in Week 3 Sep 16, 2022 at 2:30 pm ET • 4 min read USATSI Week 3 of the college football season has arrived, and there are plenty of intriguing matchups that headline what could be another wild week of action. On CBS, No. 22 Penn State will become the first Big Ten team to play Auburn in Jordan-Hare Stadium when the two tee it up on Saturday afternoon. This Big Ten vs. SEC showdown sees the Tigers looking for revenge at home after a 28-20 loss to the Nittany Lions in Happy Valley last season.  Elsewhere, No. 6 Oklahoma will rekindle its rivalry with Nebraska and No. 13 Miami will head to College Station, Texas, to take on No. 24 Texas A&M. All kinds of chaos broke loose last weekend during a wild Week 2, including in College Station where Appalachian State topped the Aggies in a stunning upset.  The drama on Saturday should be aplenty, and below we have provided a handy viewer’s guide to help you navigate all of the action. All times eastern. The best games No. 6 Oklahoma at Nebraska — noon on Fox, fuboTV (Try for free): Mickey Joseph will lead the Cornhuskers out of the tunnel and into the post-Scott Frost era after the legendary former Cornhuskers quarterback was fired on Sunday. He’ll see old Big 12 rival Oklahoma on the other sideline, and there’s no doubt that a win over one of the most consistent programs over the last decade would ease the tension in Lincoln. No. 24 Penn State at Auburn — 3:30 p.m. on CBS, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App (Free): This is a critical game for an Auburn team that not only struggled against San Jose State last weekend but has a coach in Bryan Harsin who was almost run off in February. This could be a pivot point for the direction of the program against a Nittany Lions team that would love to make a big statement in SEC country. No. 12 BYU at No. 25 Oregon — 3:30 p.m. on Fox, fuboTV (Try for free): The college football world seemingly wrote off the Ducks after they got smoked by Georgia in Week 1, but first-year coach Dan Lanning could erase that disappointment with a win over a Cougars team that topped Baylor in a double-overtime thriller last week. If you haven’t watched Cougars quarterback Jaren Hall spin it, give him a look. No. 11 Michigan State at Washington — 7:30 p.m. on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free): The Huskies lead the Pac-12 in passing and the Spartans pass defense was its Achilles heel last year despite its win over Pittsburgh in the Peach Bowl. We’ll know a lot about both teams after what should be a fun atmosphere inside Husky Stadium. No. 13 Miami at No. 24 Texas A&M — 9 p.m. on ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free): This game was already dripping with intrigue due to the desperation from the Aggies after losing to Appalachian State last week, and a statement could be made by the Hurricanes with a win in SEC country. Coach Jimbo Fisher has reportedly made a quarterback change from Haynes King to Max Johnson, which cranks the interest up even more.  Best of the rest No. 1 Georgia at South Carolina — noon on ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free) UConn at No. 4 Michigan — noon on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free) Youngstown State at No. 9 Kentucky — noon on SEC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) Texas State at No. 17 Baylor — noon on FS1, fuboTV (Try for free) Villanova at Army — noon on CBS Sports Network, fuboTV (Try for free) California at Notre Dame — 2:30 p.m. on NBC, fuboTV (Try for free) No. 20 Ole Miss at Georgia Tech — 3:30 p.m. on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free) Vanderbilt at Northern Illinois — 3:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, fuboTV (Try for free) UL-Monroe at No. 2 Alabama — 4 p.m. on SEC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) Liberty at No. 19 Wake Forest — 5 p.m. on ACC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) Mississippi State at LSU — 6 p.m. on ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free) Toledo at No. 3 Ohio State — 7 p.m. on Fox, fuboTV (Try for free) Arkansas-Pine Bluff at No. 8 Oklahoma State — 7 p.m. on ESPN+, fuboTV (Try for free) Missouri State at No. 10 Arkansas — 7 p.m. on SEC Network+, fuboTV (Try for free) Akron at No. 15 Tennessee — 7 p.m. on SEC Network+, fuboTV (Try for free) Texas Tech at No. 16 NC State — 7 p.m. on ESPN2, fuboTV (Try for free) South Florida at No. 18 Florida — 7:30 p.m. on SEC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) No. 23 Pittsburgh at Western Michigan — 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU, fuboTV (Try for free) UCF at FAU — 7:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, fuboTV (Try for free) Louisiana Tech at No. 5 Clemson — 8 p.m. on ACC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) UTSA at No. 21 Texas — 8 p.m. on Longhorn Network, fuboTV (Try for free) San Diego State at No. 14 Utah — 10 p.m. on ESPN2, fuboTV (Try for free) Fresno State at No. 7 USC — 10:30 p.m. ET on Fox, fuboTV (Try for free)

Beverly Hills Mulls Metaverse Expansion Beverly Hills Courier
Beverly Hills Mulls Metaverse Expansion – Beverly Hills Courier https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/beverly-hills-mulls-metaverse-expansion-beverly-hills-courier/ BY Bianca Heyward September 16, 2022 Metaverse media and virtual reality technology as internet futuristic streaming symbol with VR computing and augmented reality as a computer programs concept in a 3D illustration style. Reading Time: 3 minutes At its Sep. 12 adjourned Study Session, the Beverly Hills City Council unanimously agreed to explore the possibility of expanding into the metaverse. Thought to be the next evolution of the internet, the metaverse integrates physical and digital experiences and allows people to interact using technologies like 3D computing, augmented reality, virtual reality and blockchain. In the immersive virtual world, users can attend virtual events, explore cities, and purchase non downloadable virtual footwear, clothing, and accessories. While the City Attorney’s office filed a Class 41 Trademark application in June to protect the use of the city shield in the metaverse, Mayor Lili Bosse requested that the Council consider Beverly Hills entering the metaverse.  “Whether we like it or not the metaverse is here and will continue to be here,” Mayor Bosse said. “I want to make sure that we really protect our community, protect Beverly Hills, and use it as a way to really tell our story.” According to Travis Cloyd of Worldwide XR, an entertainment technology and digital agency, Santa Monica was the first city in the country to enter the metaverse by offering a virtual way to experience its downtown district through FlickPlay, a metaverse social app company. Users can explore an interactive map of the city and collect tokens, which can then be used to unlock digital experiences in the app or redeemed for physical items at retailers in the city.  “Look at these Metaverse ecosystems as trailers driving more foot traffic and more awareness,” Cloyd said. “For example, I can text message somebody anywhere in the world, and they get a snippet. They get a chance to go step in the virtual space for only a small, limited time. We’re hoping that that can drive them to physically come in here.” To partake and create content in the metaverse, the city would have to buy digital parcels of space in the metaverse using cryptocurrencies. After using cryptocurrencies to acquire digital parcels of real estate in a metaverse ecosystem, the city would be able build a virtual replica of City Hall or Rodeo Drive. In the metaverse, users can purchase virtual property, goods, services, or nonfungible tokens (NFTs) and pay for them with cryptocurrency.  “I absolutely would support looking at this as a way to promote the city, not as a new lifestyle,” Councilmember John Mirisch said. “But it’s a form of recreation. People are spending time there and can we reach them there? I think we should look at it more as a billboard than as speculative real estate.” However, Mirisch opposed doing anything that would require the city to use cryptocurrencies, and suggested the city do a cost benefit analysis. “Unless they develop cryptocurrencies that are carbon neutral, I’d say staying away from anything involving cryptocurrency is a must,” Mirisch said. While referred to as the “wild west,” the city hopes to explore opportunities in the metaverse that utilize augmented reality to support tourism and the local economy.  “I think there’s so many advantages to what this can do for our city,” Mayor Bosse said. “It can be a promotional tool. It can be an informational tool. We’re always looking at new ways of communicating with our residents and with those who don’t live in our city as well.” Bosse indicated that she and Vice Mayor Julian Gold would be in future liaison meetings to explore the metaverse for the city before bringing it back to the council. “I think it’s important that we protect the brand of our city as well and we also use this as an opportunity,” Mayor Bosse added. “If we could use this as an educational tool for our residents and others, I think that’s great,” Vice Mayor Gold said. “If we can create avatars that help people through the planning process, I think that’s great.”  29 views

In Loving Memory Of Ruth Taylor: 1957-2022 – The Reflector https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/in-loving-memory-of-ruth-taylor-1957-2022-the-reflector/ Ruth Ann Taylor, an Endicott resident, passed away at the Whitman Hospital in Colfax, Washington on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022, from complications of pancreatic cancer. She was 65. She was born June 2, 1957 in Centralia, Washington to Melvin and Viola (Ankrom) Keely.  She married David Taylor on May 28, 1977 in Portland, Oregon. They moved to Wallowa, Oregon and lived on David’s family ranch for about six months and then lived on a dairy farm in Forest Grove, Oregon. David and Ruth moved to Clarkston, Washington in October of 1979 when David got a job at the Lewiston paper mill. Their daughter was born there in May 1980. David received another job transfer to St. Helens, Oregon that summer and they lived there until son Walter was born in January of 1985. Shortly after that the family moved to Hermiston, Oregon where they remained until David’s job transferred David, Ruth and Walter to the Vancouver, Washington area in August of 1999. They lived in the Brush Prairie and Washougal area until 2017 when the kids and grandkids convinced them to move to Endicott, Washington.  While living in Hermiston the family was involved in the Umatilla Sage Riders Horse Club where Ruth held multiple positions on the board of directors including president, secretary and treasurer. Ruth was a horse 4-H leader for several years and a volunteer for 4-H and FFA events her children participated in.  After moving to the Vancouver, Washington area both Ruth and David became involved with the Clark County Saddle Club, Cowboy Church and the Vancouver Rodeo. Ruth was also involved with the Clark County Rodeo Bible Camp and was a rodeo queen chaperone.  Ruth worked for many years in both Hermiston and Vancouver for tax accounting offices where she was office manager. David and Ruth decided to move to Endicott, Washington to be closer to both of their children and their seven grandchildren that lived in Whitman County, Washington. Ruth enjoyed spending her time in her sewing room, watching the grandchildren grow up and attending various sporting, 4-H and FFA events for them.  Ruth was preceded in death by her parents Melvin Forest Keely, Sr. and Viola Grace Ankrom Keely; sisters Patty Ann Waterman, Joyce Zaugg and Jackie Smith; and brothers Anthony Keely and John Campbell. She is survived by her husband of 45 years David Taylor, of Endicott, Washington; children Laura (Larry) Jones, of St. John, Washington, and Walter (Ashlee) Taylor, of LaCrosse, Washington; seven grandchildren Austin, Dakota and Keely Jones, of St. John, and Tanner, Tucker, Taylee and Tinlee Taylor, of LaCrosse, Washington; sister Lisa (Ted) Kelley, of St. Helens, Oregon; and brothers Joe (MaryLou) Smith, of Bonney Lake, Washington, Loren (Dorothy) Campbell, of Bend, Oregon, Melvin (Jerrie) Keely, of Hermiston, Oregon, and William (Carmen) Keely, of Henderson, Nevada; as well as numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, 2022, at the St. John Methodist Church followed immediately by a luncheon reception and the graveside service will follow that at 2:30 in the Endicott Cemetery. The family suggests memorial gifts be made to the American Cancer Society, the Clark County Rodeo Bible Camp (P.O. Box 822140, Vancouver, Washington, 98682), or to a local 4-H or FFA program.  An online guest book is available at www.corbeillfuneralhomes.com.  Corbeill Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of the arrangements.

Bitcoin Spot ETF Might Just Have Come Another Step Closer After This Move – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/bitcoin-spot-etf-might-just-have-come-another-step-closer-after-this-move-cryptonews/ Source: Unsplash A much-discussed Bitcoin (BTC) spot exchange-traded fund (ETF) could finally see the light of day in the US, after a new ETF filed under rules that would be used for a spot fund just went live on the market. The fund in question is Teucrium’s Hashdex Bitcoin Futures ETF with the appropriate ticker code DEFI, which began trading on the NYSE Arca exchange on Thursday, Bloomberg reported. And according to the report, the fund differs from all other bitcoin ETFs that have launched so far in that it was filed under the Securities Act of 1933 – the same act that would be necessary to use for a Bitcoin spot ETF. All other Bitcoin ETFs in the US have been filed under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Spot-based crypto ETFs that are backed directly by digital assets have long been denied listing in the US by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the financial regulator in charge of approving such listings. As a result, the crypto ETFs that exist in the US so far are all backed by Bitcoin futures contracts, and not “physical” bitcoins. For the time being, Bitcoin ETFs remain the only crypto-based ETFs that exist in the US. According to Bloomberg, the Investment Company Act of 1940 has been the SEC’s preferred law for crypto ETFs to be filed under, with SEC Chair Gary Gensler citing greater investor protections under that law as the reason. With the new fund filed and approved under the 1933 law, however, questions are being raised about whether the SEC has changed its stance to towards crypto ETFs. “The launch of this Teucrium product only bolsters the case for a spot Bitcoin ETF since it’s utilizing the exact same fund structure,” Nate Geraci, president of advisory firm The ETF Store told Bloomberg, before adding that this “doesn’t mean the SEC will budge from their hard-line stance.” “I’m still in the camp that a spot product simply won’t be approved until the SEC has regulatory oversight of crypto exchanges,” he said. When Teucrium’s new ETF originally was approved by the SEC back in April this year, other analysts, including Bloomberg’s own ETF analyst Eric Balchunas, also noted how the approval was a step on the way to a spot bitcoin ETF. The approval is a “good sign for spot” given that the application was “filed under the 33 Act, which [Gensler] has said doesn’t have enough [investor] protections vs [the] 40 Act,” Balchunas said at the time.

ODU ranked in the top tier of 1,500 national higher education institutions evaluated for the 2022-2023 report, and placed 156th among public schools. In addition, Old Dominion remained a top performer in advancing social mobility, tying for No. 140. The criteria for this category included the rates at which each school enrolled and graduated disadvantaged students awarded Pell Grants. Most of these federal grants go to students whose adjusted gross family incomes are under $50,000. Several ODU academic programs posted strong gains: Undergraduate business program – No. 144 (up from No. 166 last year) Undergraduate nursing program – No. 153 (up from No. 183 last year) Undergraduate computer science program – No. 172 (up from No. 191 last year) ODU also was ranked No. 150 among undergraduate engineering programs at doctoral institutions. “The U.S. News and World Report rankings reflect the continuing strength of Old Dominion University’s academic programs,” said Austin Agho, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “Further, they highlight the tremendous success of our efforts to support underrepresented and low-income students.” To see the complete 2022-2023 Best Colleges rankings, visit U.S. News & World Report. Honors have been plentiful for the University this year. Five ODU distance-learning programs were named among the best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in January. In March, Old Dominion earned a Gold ranking as a Military Friendly® School for 2022-2023 from militaryfriendly.com. In April, Old Dominion was recognized as a top-tier institution in the Center for World University Rankings’ Global 2000 list. In May, the school was recognized as a global leader for addressing inequality, tying for 65th in the world and ranking fifth among U.S. institutions for reducing inequalities in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for 2022. In June, the University was awarded the No. 1 ranking in Virginia in a new Economic Mobility Index created by the public policy think tank Third Way. HP Victus 15 (2022) Review Is This Cheap Gaming Laptop Actually Good? Laptop Mag
HP Victus 15 (2022) Review Is This Cheap Gaming Laptop Actually Good? Laptop Mag
HP Victus 15 (2022) Review — Is This Cheap Gaming Laptop Actually Good? – Laptop Mag https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/hp-victus-15-2022-review-is-this-cheap-gaming-laptop-actually-good-laptop-mag/ The HP Victus 15 is a budget-friendly laptop that targets casual gamers who don’t demand the latest and the greatest specs, but this HP rig faces stiff competition. Pros + Great for casual gamers + Sophisticated, all-black design + Budget-friendly price tag + 144Hz refresh rate display + Excellent thermal performance Cons – Dimmer-than-expected display – Three-year-old GPU – Middling gaming performance Put your snobbiness away for the HP Victus 15. No, it doesn’t come with a killer response time, a fancy-schmancy Nvidia RTX 30-series GPU, nor a glitzy, animated RGB keyboard, but come on, you’re only shelling out $800 for this laptop, so give it a break! At this point, if you’ve already turned your nose up like a petulant child snubbing their vegetables, the HP Victus 15 is not for you. However, if you’re still intrigued, good! This means you’re willing to temper your expectations. The Victus 15 won’t appeal to professional gamers who demand the latest and greatest, but it has enough razzle dazzle to win the affections of casual players. The HP gaming rig sports a 12th Gen Intel Core i5 CPU, a 144Hz refresh rate display, updated thermals, and a sophisticated, office-friendly onyx chassis that can double as a work laptop. At only $800, the HP Victus 15 is a dream for unpretentious, budget-conscious gamers. However, there’s one little hiccup. The HP laptop has a stiff competitor on its hands: the Acer Nitro 5 (2022) (opens in new tab) which is, as of this writing, within the same price range. Stick around to find out whether the Victus 15 is one of the best cheap gaming laptops you can get — or perhaps there’s a better competitor that will give you more bang for your buck.  HP Victus 15 price and configurations  You’ll breathe a sigh of relief when you find out that our review unit only costs $799 at Best Buy (opens in new tab). It comes with a 12th Gen Intel Core i5-12450H CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 GPU with 4GB of VRAM, and a 15.6-inch, 1920 x 1080-pixel display with a 144Hz refresh rate. HP Victus 15 (Image credit: Future) Perhaps you want a little more RAM. Or maybe — and understandably — the GPU isn’t doing it for you. You’ll have to shell out an additional $300 for the Intel Core i7-12650H CPU model, which sports 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti GPU, and a 15.6-inch, full HD panel with a 144Hz refresh rate. It costs $1,100 on Best Buy (opens in new tab) so it may not be appealing as the aforementioned $800 darling, but you’ll squeeze out more processing and graphical power for speedier frame rates. HP Victus 15 design  The Victus 15 is the guy at the party dressed to the nines with an urbane, sophisticated style, but you’d be shocked to find out he got his outfit at H&M — not Neiman Marcus. The Victus 15, unsurprisingly, features an all-plastic build, and it certainly feels plasticky to the touch. However, the onyx chassis has a mature, refined look that would fit in any office. Plus, it’s impressively sturdy; there isn’t much give while pressing down on the deck. HP Victus (Image credit: Future) I’ve grown to appreciate understated, unassuming gaming laptops. Just because you can play with it doesn’t mean it should look like a flashy pinball machine, right? HP calls the hue that coats the Victus 15 “Mica Silver.” It sounds fancy, but it looks like regular-degular charcoal to me with its dark-gray shade. The bold, reflective “V” on the Victus 15’s lid is striking, but subtle at the same time. You’ll also find the word “Victus” emblazoned across the hinge in a futuristic white font. Open the lid and you’ll be greeted with a monstrous bottom bezel that gives the Crimson Chin a run for his money. Other than the Jay Leno-esque chin, the bezels are slim. No, they’re not “barely there” thin, but they’re not unattractively thick either. On the deck, you’ll find an edge-to-edge keyboard, but I can’t help but cringe at the touchpad. While the deck itself seems averse to my fingerprints, I can’t say the same for the touchpad. It’s a neat freak’s nightmare and a criminal investigator’s dream. Above the keyboard, you’ll see a patterned speaker grille sandwiched between the function keys and hinge (I’ll dive into how it sounds later). HP Victus 15 (Image credit: Future) The underside features two elongated feet to keep the Victus 15 slightly elevated from surfaces. After all, with a giant vent that takes up nearly half of the laptop’s bottom, it needs plenty of breathing room. You’ll also find two bottom-firing speaker grilles. The HP Victus 15 measures 14.1 x 10 x 0.9 inches and weighs 5.06 pounds. The Acer Nitro 5 (2022), the Victus 15’s rival in this review, measures 14.2 x 10.7 x 1.02 inches and weighs 5.5 pounds, so the HP gaming rig has an edge with a thinner, lighter chassis.  HP Victus 15 ports  No, at this price point, the HP Victus 15 doesn’t feature Thunderbolt 4 support, but on the right side, you’ll find the following ports: USB Type-C, an Ethernet jack, HDMI 2.1 and USB 3.2 Type-A.  HP Victus 15 (Image credit: Future) The left side offers a microSD slot, a 3.5mm headphone jack, another USB 3.2 Type-A port, and an AC power port. HP Victus 15 display  The HP Victus 15 has a 15.6-inch, 1920 x 1080-pixel, anti-glare display with a 144Hz refresh rate and 9-millisecond response time. The Victus 15’s panel renders details like a boss, making visuals look crisp. However, this isn’t a display you’ll want to use if you’re a professional artist. However, color richness and brightness is not this display’s forte — and our test results reflect that. HP Victus 15 (Image credit: Future) Before I dive into the numbers, let’s delve into my anecdotal experience with the Victus 15. I played Prey (2017) on the HP Victus 15 for several weeks, and I often found myself reaching for the brightness button to get more illumination during dark scenes, but was disappointed to see that it was already maxed out. On the plus side, thanks to the 144Hz refresh rate, gameplay felt smooth, zippy and brisk, whether I was taking down aliens in zero-gravity environments or knocking down zombie-like freaks inside a spaceship. I also tested the HP Victus 15 display by watching The Little Mermaid trailer. Sea turtles that weaved through coral reefs seemed tangible as underwater sun rays danced on their ridged, rough-textured shells. As the sea-dwelling, mystical beauté Ariel swam past a shipwreck, the invasive vegetation on the dilapidated ruins could’ve been more verdant. When actor/singer Halle Bailey’s face came into view, I was impressed with the subtle details on her face, including several scars — and a cute little mole — on top of her eyebrow. I could even spot the body glitter placed across her decolletage. Colors fell a little flat in the trailer, and as mentioned, our test results explain why. According to our colorimeter, the HP Victus 15 reproduced 45% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, which stumbles behind the average entry-level gaming laptop (52%). The Acer Nitro 5, however, won by a landslide, offering a show-stopping 0.4% of additional DCI-P3 coverage with a figure of 45.4%. And yes, that was sarcasm. The Nitro 5’s edge over Victus 15’s display is damn-near imperceptible. I’m sure the HP is breathing a sigh of relief that its Acer-branded rival also delivered below-average stats. They can celebrate their mediocrity together. Yay! HP Victus 15 (Image credit: Future) The HP Victus 15 emanated an embarrassing 235 nits of brightness (this falls below its advertised 250 nits), which is far dimmer than the average budget gaming laptop (284 nits). The Acer Nitro 5 is no shining star itself, but it has a brighter, 314-nit display. If you like to play games while sitting in your backyard, or your desk is stationed near an unshaded window, you’ll likely find it difficult to see the screen (on both laptops), especially on sunny days. However, the Victus 15’s anti-glare panel helps to reflect some of the light. HP Victus 15 keyboard and touchpad  You’ll find white characters and symbols superimposed on the black keys of this edge-to-edge keyboard. It also features a numpad, a nice addition if the games you play demand one. As mentioned at the outset, this keyboard doesn’t have RGB lighting, but you can turn on a white backlight if you need it. One aspect of the keyboard I don’t love is that pressing the “increase volume” key prompts the following message to pop up: “Turn on caret browsing?” HP Victus 15 (Image credit: Future) After a few seconds of befuddlement, I realized I needed to press the FN key and the volume key simultaneously to amplify sound. I found it weird that caret browsing, which only requires a single key press, is more easily accessible than the volume setting, but erm, whatever. Suit yourself, HP! You’ll also find a diamond shaped key, too, which conveniently launches the Omen Gaming Hub. During the 10FastFingers.com typing test, my average dropped to 80 words per minute (I typically have a typing speed of 87 wpm). Why? I suspect that the keyboard doesn’t have enough “bounce back” to propel my fingers to the next letters rapidly. Also, the keyboard is too damn loud and clacky. I wouldn’t want to sit next to a co-worker with an HP Victus 15 — that’s for sure! The 4.9 x 3.1-inch touchpad is spacious. It feels cheap, yes, but it does the job. It performed all the Windows 11 gestures well, including three-finger swipes to revisit previous pages and pinch-to-zoom.  HP Victus 15 audio  Listen, as long as you’re not a music producer or an audio engineer, the HP Victus 15’s mediocre Bang & Olufsen-tuned speakers shouldn’t be a dealbreaker. There’s an upfiring, edge-to-edge speaker on the deck as well as two dual speakers on the lapto...

Putin Vows To Press Attack On Ukraine, Courts India’s Modi – 69News WFMZ-TV https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/putin-vows-to-press-attack-on-ukraine-courts-indias-modi-69news-wfmz-tv/ SAMARKAND, Uzbekistan (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed Friday to press his attack on Ukraine despite its latest counteroffensive and warned that Moscow could ramp up its strikes if Ukrainian forces target power plants and other infrastructure in Russia. Speaking to reporters Friday after attending a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Uzbekistan, Putin said the “liberation” of Ukraine’s entire eastern Donbas region remained Russia’s main military goal and that he sees no need to revise it. “We aren’t in a rush,” the Russian leader said, adding that Russia has only deployed volunteer soldiers to fight in Ukraine. Russia was forced to pull back its forces from large swaths of northeastern Ukraine last week after a swift Ukrainian counteroffensive. Ukraine’s move to reclaim control of several Russian-occupied cities and villages marked the largest military setback for Moscow since its forces had to retreat from areas near the capital early in the war. Asked about the Ukrainian counteroffensive, Putin replied: “Let’s how it develops and how it ends.” He alleged that Ukraine has attempted to launch attacks “near our nuclear facilities, nuclear power plants” in Russia and vowed to do “everything to prevent any negative turn of events.” “We will retaliate if they fail to understand that such methods are unacceptable, they don’t differ from terrorism,” Putin said. Putin also sought Friday to assuage India’s concern about the conflict in Ukraine, telling Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Moscow wants to see a quick end to the fighting and alleging Ukrainian officials won’t negotiate. “I know your stand on the conflict in Ukraine and the concerns that you have repeatedly voiced,” the Russian leader told Modi. “We will do all we can to end that as quickly as possible. Regrettably, the other side, the leadership of Ukraine, has rejected the negotiations process and stated that it wants to achieve its goals by military means, on the battlefield.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said it is Russia that allegedly doesn’t want to negotiate in earnest. He also has insisted on the withdrawal of Russian troops from occupied areas of Ukraine as a precondition for talks. Putin’s remarks during the talks with Modi echoed similar comments he made during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping the previous day. China and India have refused to join Western sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine while increasing their purchases of Russian oil and gas, helping Moscow offset the financial restrictions imposed by the U.S. and its allies. Putin also met Friday with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to discuss bolstering economic cooperation and regional issues, including a July deal brokered by Turkey and the U.N. that allowed Ukrainian grain exports to resume from the country’s Black Sea ports. Speaking at the Uzbekistan summit on Friday, Xi warned his Central Asian neighbors not to allow outsiders to destabilize them. The warning reflects Beijing’s anxiety that Western support for pro-democracy and human rights activists is a plot to undermine Xi’s ruling Communist Party and other authoritarian governments. “We should prevent external forces from instigating a color revolution,” Xi said in a speech to leaders of Shanghai Cooperation Organization member nations, referring to protests that toppled unpopular regimes in the former Soviet Union and the Middle East. Xi offered to train 2,000 police officers, to set up a regional counterterrorism training center and to “strengthen law enforcement capacity building.” He gave no details. His comments echoed longtime Russian grievances about the color-coded uprisings in several ex-Soviet nations that the Kremlin viewed as instigated by the U.S. and its allies. Xi is promoting a “Global Security Initiative” announced in April following the formation of the Quad by the U.S., Japan, Australia and India in response to Beijing’s more assertive foreign policy. Xi has given few details, but U.S. officials complain it echoes Russian arguments in support of Moscow’s actions in Ukraine. China’s relations with Washington, Europe, Japan and India have been strained by disputes about technology, security, human rights and territory. Central Asia is part of China’s multibillion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative to expand trade by building ports, railways and other infrastructure across an arc of dozens of countries from the South Pacific through Asia to the Middle East, Europe and Africa. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization was formed by Russia and China as a counterweight to U.S. influence. The group also includes India, Pakistan and four ex-Soviet Central Asian nations of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Iran is on track to receive full membership. On Thursday, Putin held a one-on-one meeting with Xi and thanked the Chinese leader for his government’s “balanced position” on the Ukraine war, while adding that he was ready to discuss unspecified China’s “concerns” about Ukraine. Xi, in a statement released by his government, expressed support for Russia’s “core interests” but also interest in working together to “inject stability” into world affairs. Li Xin, director of the Institute of European and Asian Studies of Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, noted that Beijing wants a negotiated end to the Ukraine war, adding that “China will not judge whether the special military operation of Russia is just or not.” Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. Cost Of Living Crisis: NHS To Face ‘challenging Winter’ As Energy Costs Rise, Warn Healthcare Leaders – NationalWorld https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/cost-of-living-crisis-nhs-to-face-challenging-winter-as-energy-costs-rise-warn-healthcare-leaders-nationalworld/ Rising energy costs could “wipe out large parts of the NHS budget”, with healthcare leaders warning this winter will be “particularly challenging”. The crisis is set to affect households across the UK, as well as care homes, businesses – and even the NHS. The cost of living crisis is a growing concern as winter approaches Rory Deighton, senior acute lead at the NHS Confederation, said NHS leaders have been “warning for some time” that higher than expected inflation, including rising energy costs, is “wiping out large parts of the NHS budget”. He added: “This isn’t an abstract problem as the gap in funding from rising inflation will either have to be made up by fewer staff being employed, longer waiting times for care or other areas of patient care being cut back.” Mr Deighton said new Prime Minister Liz Truss must provide “a top-up” in this year’s autumn Budget or any emergency Budget they hold to make up the shortfall. He explained that the NHS needs at least £4 billion  to make up for inflation during this year alone, and “that is before we face a winter of even higher inflation”. “A failure to properly compensate the NHS for inflation will only heighten pressure on our health service as we move towards a winter that we know will be particularly challenging this year,” he added. ‘The Government should take heed of the health service warnings’ Rachel Power, chief executive of the Patients Association, said the cost of living crisis is the “latest calamity to harm people’s health” and the Government “should take heed of the health service warnings about the difficulties it will face this winter”. She explained that health chiefs have warned they will have to pay for rising gas and electricity costs by employing fewer staff or cutting back on some areas of patient care, as well as concerns over losing staff who cannot afford car fuel. “All of this will impact on patient care, with longer waiting lists for both hospital and community care,” Ms Power added. She said the Patients Association has “very real fears” that this winter “some of the poorest in society, already reeling from the pandemic, will face destitution and worsening health”. “We know poverty and poor housing makes you ill,” Ms Power added. “If people who need equipment to help them live healthy lives can’t afford to run it, if people can’t heat their homes, and can’t afford nutritious meals, we will see people’s physical and mental health worsen and the NHS may not have the capacity to care for them.” This comes as  a study published in the BMJ suggested that patients being treated by burned-out doctors may face additional risks when they receive care. The new review found that doctors experiencing burnout are twice as likely to be involved in patient safety incidents such as medication errors and “suboptimal care”. Patients are also less likely to be satisfied with the treatment provided by burned-out doctors, with the link between burnout and patient safety incidents being highest among younger doctors and emergency medicine physicians. Dr Kit Latham, 35, an A&E doctor in London, said healthcare staff “are having to face the same cost-of-living pressures as everyone else”, with stress about affording energy bills and food costs “making their mental and physical burnout much worse”.

Dr. Luke Enters Metaverse Debuts Virtual Artist Amari On New Label Billboard
Dr. Luke Enters Metaverse, Debuts Virtual Artist ‘Amari’ On New Label – Billboard https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/dr-luke-enters-metaverse-debuts-virtual-artist-amari-on-new-label-billboard/ Meet Amari, the first virtual artist signed to Dr. Luke’s new metaverse label Player Zero. The imprint — a joint venture with Web3 collective Digital Arts & Science — will develop a roster of virtual artists and metaverse experiences. Amari’s debut single, “Deeper” is the type of chart-friendly, electro-pop track that you’d expect from the Dr. Luke hit-making machine. The Doja Cat producer put together a team of the industry’s leading pop songwriters to pen the first single, with credits spanning Demi Lovato, Zara Larsson, Tove Stryke, Fergie, One Republic, Lany and more. Dr. Luke is expected to produce future records for the label. The first artist, Amari, emerges from Player Zero’s futuristic virtual world, where characters and bands will release records, play virtual concerts and release NFT drops. Lawrence Vavra, founder of Digital Arts & Science and decade-long Blink-182 manager, says the label will gradually introduce more virtual characters and ramp up its metaverse experiences in 2023. With its roots in Web3, Player Zero’s Amari isn’t just an animation, she’s an NFT. Amari is a character from the CyberBrokers project — a collection of 10,001 NFTs created by respected Web3 artist Josie Bellini. Similar to how Universal Music Group launched KINGSHIP with characters from the Bored Ape Yacht Club, Player Zero is using the commercial rights to its CyberBroker to create a pop singer. Granting commercial rights to holders so they can monetize their NFT opens up a world of creativity, says Bellini. “I’ll never stop being excited when I see a new project spinning out from our collection. We set out from the very beginning to be very permissive in our licensing … we recognize that it strengthens the Cyber Brokers IP, and it uplifts the entire community and universe we are building together.” Vavra says the record label chose a CyberBroker because of the strength of the community, storytelling and character development. The CyberBrokers universe is centered around a futuristic metaverse with a sci-fi storyline. Says Vavra, “It meshed well with bringing a virtual artist to life in the Player Zero universe.” Player Zero has also launched a Founder’s Pass NFT collection to the public. After completing an initial presale, the remaining 50 NFTs will be released through a daily auction, each complete with artwork from another renowned crypto artist, FVCKRENDER. The pass will grant holders access to all future drops and metaverse experiences, as well as access to a private Discord server where holders can have a say in the future of the label. If a Player Zero record goes platinum, holders may even be able to claim an IRL plaque. Virtual artists are not a new phenomenon (remember Gorillaz?) but there’s been a resurgence lately due to hype around the metaverse and NFTs. However, it’s not without controversy. Virtual rapper FN Meka was dropped by Capitol Records in August due to backlash over racial stereotypes. The executive involved stepped down. Labels need to tread carefully, but Amari’s creators are confident that virtual artists are the next big thing. Vavra says the artist is just one piece of the puzzle and the label is also keen to highlight the team and community contributions. “We believe the world is ready to support the people behind the artist as much as the actual artist itself.” Amari’s debut single “Deeper,” produced and chiefly written by Sean Myer, is available to stream now across various DSPs.

Crypto Prices On Back Foot Is A Buy Opportunity For PoW Miner Tokens – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/crypto-prices-on-back-foot-is-a-buy-opportunity-for-pow-miner-tokens-cryptonews/ The crypto market’s stagnation has prompted investors to seek alternative income streams. One way is by opting for PoW miner tokens. Disclaimer: The Industry Talk section features insights by crypto industry players and is not a part of the editorial content of Cryptonews.com. The proof of work (PoW) consensus requires miners to verify transactions on the blockchain. During the crypto market’s slump, some investors have turned to PoW miner tokens. Let’s take a closer look at the best miner cryptocurrencies. Best PoW Miner Cryptos The top miner cryptocurrencies we found are Ethereum Classic, Ravencoin and Ergo. Tamadoge is a great miner token alternative. 1. Ethereum Classic (ETC)   An Ethereum fork, ETC has no plans of switching to proof of stake (PoS). The project has expressed vehemently that it plans to use the proof of work consensus indefinitely.  Ethereum Classic feels that PoW provides sovereign-grade censorship resistance. Miners have rallied behind ETC after the Ethereum Merge, leaving behind the second-biggest crypto by market cap and almost doubling ETC’s hashrate. 2. Ravencoin (RVN) Ravencoin is another fortunate beneficiary of the Ethereum Merge. Miners have abandoned Ethereum and flocked to Ravencoin. The network offers miners a block reward of 5,000 RVN and a block time of 1 minute. It has a new mining algorithm, KAPOW. That enables more decentralized mining. Ravencoin provides a peer-to-peer platform, offering an efficient transfer of assets from one user to another.  3. Ergo (ERG) Ergo is a smart contract platform providing users with secure and decentralized tools. Its mining is based on Autolykos, an efficient ASIC-resistant PoW algorithm. One of the key advantages for Ergo miners is the ability to participate in voting tokens, log-space mining and subpooling. Ergo also enables miners to adjust parameters with on-chain voting. But a supermajority implements larger changes via a soft fork. Miner Token Alternative Consider Tamadoge (TAMA) as a way to hedge the PoW mining risk. TAMA is an ERC-20 token that’s at the forefront of Web3.0 and a big beneficiary of PoS. Its P2E feature enables players to earn TAMA tokens for grooming their pets into adulthood. Tamadoge is currently in a presale. A TAMA token costs $0.03, a vast difference from its beta sale price of $0.01.The next stage for Tamadoge is listings on exchanges LBank and Uniswap. Column: U.S. Gas Producers Struggle To Meet Demand – Reuters.com https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/column-u-s-gas-producers-struggle-to-meet-demand-reuters-com/ A drilling rig operates in the Permian Basin oil and natural gas production area in Lea County, New Mexico, U.S., February 10, 2019. REUTERS/Nick Oxford/File Photo Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com LONDON, Sept 16 (Reuters) – U.S. shale drillers are struggling to meet strong demand for gas from domestic generators as well as customers in Europe and Asia scrambling for replacement supplies following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Working inventories in underground storage amounted to 2,771 billion cubic feet on Sept. 9, the second-lowest for the time of year since 2010, according to data from U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Storage has been below the pre-pandemic five-year average continuously since late January and the deficit has shown no sign of closing despite prices well above long-term averages. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Inventories are currently 398 billion cubic feet below the pre-pandemic average, compared with a deficit of 316 bcf at the start of the injection season on April 1 (“Weekly natural gas storage report”, EIA, Sept. 15). Electricity generation is on track for a record this year as a result of the economy’s recovery from the pandemic and slightly above-average temperatures this summer. (Chartbook: https://tmsnrt.rs/3ScGyyn) U.S. generators are burning record volumes of gas because coal-fired units have been retired and drought has limited hydroelectric output in the western states. Generators consumed 4,372 bcf in the first five months of 2022, the second-highest on record after January-May 2020 (“Monthly energy review”, EIA, Aug. 25). Power producers’ gas combustion has been even stronger over the summer months, setting a new daily record in July (“Daily U.S. electricity generation from natural gas hit a record in mid-July”, EIA, Aug. 23). At the same time, exports are running at record rates as new LNG liquefaction terminals meet soaring demand from importers in Europe and Asia. APPROACHING WINTER Persistent scarcity has forced front-month futures prices up to more than $8 per million British thermal units, more than double the seasonal average for 2011-2020, and the highest after adjusting for inflation since 2008. In real terms, prices have been trading for most of the time since late May in the 80-85th percentiles for all months since 1990, signalling a shortage of stocks and providing a strong incentive for more production. The one-year calendar spread has been trading in an extreme backwardation of $2.50-$4.00 per million Btus (99th-100th percentiles for all trading days since 2007) underscoring the shortage of inventories. The number of rigs drilling for gas has risen to 166, from 106 at the start of the year and a low of just 68 during the pandemic’s first wave in 2020. Oil rigs (likely to produce some associated gas) have climbed to 591, from a pandemic low of 172, according to field services company Baker Hughes. As a result, gas production was up by around 4% in the second quarter of 2022 compared with the same period in 2021 but it was not enough to meet strong domestic and foreign demand and rebuild depleted inventories. As a result, stocks are vulnerable in the event of a late-season hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, a colder than normal winter, or an ice storm in the key producing areas of Texas. In the last 10 years, the average winter drawdown has been around 2,182 bcf with a range from 1,541 to 3,010 bcf, compared with stocks of just 2,771 at present, with roughly two months’ more injections to go. Even so, hedge funds and other money managers have become progressively less bullish and even slightly bearish on gas prices since April. The combined position in the two major contracts on NYMEX and ICE is equivalent to a net short position of 435 billion cubic feet, a major reversal from a net long of 1,394 bcf in early April. With prices already well above the long-term average, many portfolio managers are betting there is scope for them to retreat if winter temperatures are close to normal and there are no major output disruptions. But the low level of inventories means there are few shock absorbers; the system will quickly come under pressure if this winter’s drawdown is towards the top end of the historic range or exceeds it.
