This Week’s Top 7 High School Football Games To Watch – Newsday https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/this-weeks-top-7-high-school-football-games-to-watch-newsday/ Dom Novello and Brady Clark have some things in common. Both football players experienced the heartbreak of playoff elimination in stunning fashion in 2021. Novello, the do-it-all playmaker for Mepham, watched as MacArthur, a perennial playoff finalist, came back to beat the Pirates, 21-18, in the waning moments of a Nassau Conference II semifinal round. Novello’s season was over. Clark watched Shoreham-Wading River, a perennial Suffolk Division IV champion, strip away Bayport’s shot at the school’s first LIC appearance with a tantalizing 71-yard TD pass in the final minute. Clark’s dream season was shattered and over. The key thing that Novello and Clark have in common – they were both juniors and have another shot to win a county crown. And there is nothing sweeter than redemption. Both players opened their respective senior campaigns with a vengeance. “We have dedicated ourselves to the weight room and focused on getting stronger,” said Novello, who started the season with three TD passes in a 29-6 win over Elmont. “The MacArthur playoff loss drives us every day. It’s a reminder that we have to put in the work to get the reward.” Mepham will host MacArthur on Saturday at 2 p.m. Senior Mepham wide receiver Sofia LaSpina says she has a great bond with her teammates and thinks it’s awesome other girls look up to her as the only female football player on the Mepham Pirates, Newsday TV’s Carissa Kellman reports. Credit: Gary Licker Across the county line in the 631, Clark threw for a school-record five TD passes in a 48-6 rout of Mount Sinai in the Phantoms’ season opener. “I thought about the playoff loss to Shoreham every night,” said Clark, who totaled 335 all-purpose yards in the opener. “It was a brutal end to a great season. We’re over it and moving forward but we didn’t forget. At least we have the chance to come back and go for the county title.” Bayport-Blue Point hosts Shoreham-Wading River on Saturday at 1 p.m. The same resolve will drive both signal callers in week two of the 2022 season. “At least we didn’t have to wait too long for another shot at them,” Novello said.     MacArthur and Shoreham-Wading River also opened the season with wins. The Generals beat Calhoun, 31-7, behind three touchdowns from halfback Rocco Hogan. Shoreham-Wading River erased a seven-point halftime deficit and shut out Miller Place in the second half for a 23-20 comeback win. Sophomore halfback Will Hart scored on a 9-yard run and junior Sam Palmer added a 23-yard field goal for the win. NASSAU I Port Washington at Westbury, Friday, 5 p.m.: Port Washington stunned the conference with a 40-36 win over Freeport. Quarterback Josh McCarthy accounted for 335 all-purpose yards and scored the go-ahead TD on a 9-yard run with three seconds left. Westbury won its opener over Hicksville, 22-7. SUFFOLK II Smithtown East at Smithtown West, Friday, 6 p.m.: An intra-district showdown that features two of Long Island’s top quarterbacks. Tommy Azzara rushed for 227 yards and threw for four touchdowns in East’s 57-6 win over Copiague. Brayden Stahl passed for three touchdowns in a wild 34-30 loss to Northport. NASSAU III Wantagh at Bethpage, Saturday, Saturday, 2 p.m.: Bethpage snapped a three-game losing skein to Wantagh with a 34-27 semifinal playoff win in 2021. The Golden Eagles Will McMullen scored an 80-yard run to break a tie at 14 and pull out the 21-14 win over Floral Park. SUFFOLK II Lindenhurst at Bellport, Saturday, Saturday, 2 p.m.: These teams have split four meetings in the last four years. Bellport beat the Dawg’s 13-0 for the division title. The Dawgs’ defense has been one of the divisions best over the past decade. They will need to stop halfback Donte Phillips and quarterback Justin Miles to win on the road. CHSFL St. Anthony’s at St. Joseph (Montvale, N.J.), Saturday, 8 p.m.: St. Anthony’s quarterback Dante Torres lit up the Chaminade defense last week for four TD passes, two each to Korey Duff Jr. and Jaeden Jenkins. St. Joseph is a New Jersey powerhouse and can score with the Friars. Should be a fun game if you like to see the defensive units getting abused. Schiphol Airport Chief Quits After Summer Of Travel Chaos – Travel Weekly https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/schiphol-airport-chief-quits-after-summer-of-travel-chaos-travel-weekly/ AMSTERDAM (AP) — The CEO of Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport has quit after a summer that descended into chaos and flight cancellations amid staff shortages in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. “I’ve done my very best, but we’re not there yet. I do hope it gets better soon,” CEO Dick Benschop said in a statement released by the airport Thursday, after he told the board of his decision on Wednesday night. He said he was stepping down “to give Schiphol the space to make a new start. I do not want attention on me to become an obstacle for Schiphol.” The busy aviation hub on the outskirts of Amsterdam has been hit by huge queues and piles of unclaimed baggage over the summer vacation months as air travel roared back after the pandemic. The surge in demand for air travel came after airlines and airports had slashed jobs during the aviation slump during the pandemic. Jaap de Winter, chairman of the Schiphol board, said he and board members “respect and understand Dick’s decision” and will be looking for a successor.

AP Photo By: The Associated Press September 16, 2022 Uber said Thursday that it reached out to law enforcement after a hacker apparently breached its network. A security engineer said the intruder provided evidence of obtaining access to crucial systems at the ride-hailing service. There was no indication that Uber’s fleet of vehicles or its operation was in any way affected. “It seems like they’ve compromised a lot of stuff,” said Sam Curry, an engineer with Yuga Labs who communicated with the hacker. That includes complete access to the Amazon and Google-hosted cloud environments where Uber stores its source code and customer data, he said. Curry said he spoke to several Uber employees who said they were “working to lock down everything internally” to restrict the hacker’s access. That included the San Francisco company’s Slack internal messaging network, he said. He said there was no indication that the hacker had done any damage or was interested in anything more than publicity. “My gut feeling is that it seems like they are out to get as much attention as possible.” The hacker had alerted Curry and other security researchers to the intrusion on Thursday evening by using an internal Uber account to comment on vulnerabilities they had previously identified on the company’s network through its bug-bounty program, which pays ethical hackers to ferret out network weaknesses. The hacker provided a Telegram account address and Curry and other researchers then engaged them in a separate conversation, sharing screenshots of various pages from Uber’s cloud providers to prove they broke in. The Associated Press attempted to contact the hacker at the Telegram account where Curry and the other researchers chatted with them. But no one responded. The New York Times reported that the person who claimed responsibility for the hack said they gained access through social engineering: They sent a text message to an Uber worker claiming to be a company tech employee and persuaded the worker to hand over a password that gave them access to the network. The Times said the hacker reported being 18 years old and saying they broke in because the company had weak security. One screenshot posted on Twitter and confirmed by researchers shows a chat with the hacker in which they say they obtained the credentials of an administrative user through social engineering. Social engineering is a popular hacking strategy, as humans tend to be the weakest link in any network. Teenagers used a similar ploy in 2020 to hack Twitter Uber said via email that it was “currently responding to a cybersecurity incident. We are in touch with law enforcement.” It said it would provide updates on its Uber Comms twitter feed. The company has been hacked before. Its former chief security officer, Joseph Sullivan, is currently on trial on allegations he arranged to pay hackers $100,000 to cover up a 2016 high-tech heist in which the personal information of about 57 million customers and drivers was stolen. × Enjoy This Free Article We Have 2 More For You All You Need To Do Is Register To Receive Your 2 Additional Free Articles

The soccer legend joined the hundred of thousands of people waiting in line for hours to pay respects to the monarch, who is currently lying in state at Westminster Hall ahead of her state funeral on Monday. “I grew up in a household of royalists and I was brought up that way,” Beckham told ITV News from the queue. “If my grandparents would have been here today I know that they would have wanted to be here, so I am here on their behalf and on behalf of my family.” The former Manchester United star is married to former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, with whom he shares four children, sons Brooklyn, 23; Romeo, 20; and Cruz, 17; as well as daughter Harper, 11. “It’s a sad day, but it’s a day for us to remember the incredible legacy that she left,” he said of the queen, adding that “Her Majesty meant so much in so many different ways.” Beckham said he was “lucky to have a few moments” with the queen throughout his life and career, noting that the “most special moment” for him was receiving his Officer of the Order of the British Empire distinction, or OBE, which was bestowed on him by Elizabeth herself in 2003. Elizabeth died Sept. 8 at age 96 and is the longest-reigning British monarch, having held the throne for 70 years. The late queen’s eldest son King Charles III has since inherited the throne. Meta Finishes Off Queens Of The Metaverse Campaign With Drag Show – PR Week https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/meta-finishes-off-queens-of-the-metaverse-campaign-with-drag-show-pr-week/ Meta premiered a mixed-reality drag show, Queens of the Metaverse, last week, using virtual and augmented reality technology to bring new dimensions to drag queens’ looks. Drag act stars Blu Hydrangea, Tia Kofi and Adam All took part in the show and wore metaverse-inspired drag looks designed by aspiring LGBT+ designers: Nwora Emenike, Sal Mohammed and Christie Lau. The outfits were designed using a combination of virtual and augmented technologies, which included Meta’s VR workspace Horizon Workrooms. On the night, the drag acts took to the runway and AR technology produced a dynamic version of the acts’ outfits on the screens behind them, complete with filters to give the outfits a living look. Ineke Paulsen, Meta’s director of EMEA marketing, said: “Creative communities will help make the metaverse inclusive and inspiring – with the technologies underpinning it helping creatives overcome some of the barriers that might exist in the physical world, like access to studio space and raw materials.  “Meta’s Queens of the Metaverse is a celebration of how communities can push the boundaries of creativity and social connection physically and online.,” Paulsen said.  The night itself was the culmination of Meta’s Queens of the Metaverse campaign by We Are Social. “This is We Are Social’s most ambitious metaverse-based campaign, and we’re incredibly excited to bring such innovative content to life, culminating in a jaw-dropping, mixed-reality event,” said Jon Mobbs, business director at We Are Social. Events agency Seeper also assisted with the show, hosted by Glow Up presenter Dominic Skinner. “Even though the metaverse is in the early stages of development, the technologies behind it are already bringing exciting new ways for the drag community and LGBT+ creatives to express themselves and experiment,” said Blu Hydrangea. “I can only imagine how much further virtual reality would have taken my creativity when I was younger than hiding with bin-bags and sharpies in my bathroom.” This story first appeared on campaignlive.co.uk. Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 Review: Beautiful Design Weird Performance Matridox
Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 Review: Beautiful Design Weird Performance Matridox
Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 Review: Beautiful Design, Weird Performance – Matridox https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/lenovo-thinkpad-z13-review-beautiful-design-weird-performance-matridox/ The second I took the ThinkPad Z13 out of its eco-friendly packaging, I instantly knew I was going to enjoy using it. This laptop, announced back at CES 2022 as one of the first entries in Lenovo’s new Z series, is one of the most striking in terms of design for a ThinkPad. It boasts a much more modern take on the familiar ThinkPad clamshell we’ve come to expect with flat edges, shiny accents, and incredibly solid build quality. I’m a huge fan of it. The ThinkPad Z13 also gives some new specs a whirl, including AMD’s latest Ryzen Pro 6000 series processors. You can also configure the device with up to 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 1TB of PCIe SSD Gen 4 storage. The model I’ve been testing comes with a Ryzen 7 Pro 6850U processor, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. It’s currently priced at $1,851.85 on Lenovo’s website, which slots it right in the same premium category as many popular competitors from Dell and HP. It’s clear that the ThinkPad Z13 is geared toward the same crowd as most other ThinkPads: business users. With its specialized security features, Lenovo-branded Communications Bar, and classic hardware bonuses like the nub, it’s a ThinkPad through and through, this time with a classy design. If you’re after a ThinkPad that’s a little classier than the rest, you’ll love this laptop. You’ll just have to be okay with performance and battery life that, for lack of better words, are kinda weird. Beauty hurts sometimes The Z13 is one of most beautiful laptops you’ll ever come across, with a luxurious leather lid and chamfered edges. But performance and battery life are all over the place, which makes this laptop unreliable for a good amount of people. Pros Stunning design Fantastic keyboard and trackpad Handy shortcuts for communications Cons Performance is lackluster on battery Battery life is much shorter than expected Display is dim and unappealing ThinkPad Z13 specs Display 13.3″ WUXGA (1920 x 1200) IPS, anti-reflective, anti-smudge, touchscreen, low power, 400 nits Processor AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U Processor (2.70 GHz, up to 4.70 GHz Max Boost, 8 Cores, 16 Threads, 16 MB Cache) RAM 16 GB LPDDR5 6400MHz (Soldered) Graphics Integrated AMD Radeon 680M Graphics Storage 512 GB PCIe SSD Gen 4 Battery 51.5Whr w/ 65W adapter IO 2 x USB-C 4, headphone/mic combo jack Connectivity Wi-Fi 6E 802.11ax (2 x 2), Bluetooth 5.2, optional WWAN Fibocom L860-GL-16 4G CAT16 Camera IR & 1080p FHD Hybrid Security Windows Hello IR cameras, fingerprint scanner in keyboard, chip-level AMD Memory Guard, Microsoft Pluton chip-to-cloud technology, discrete Trusted Platform Module (dTPM), camera e-shutter kill switch Dimensions 13.99mm x 295mm x 200mm / .55″ x 11.59″ x 7.86″, starting at 1.26kg / 2.78lbs Design Let’s get one thing straight. I said it at the top of this review before the picture and the scoring widget, and I’ll say it again: I love the design of this laptop. The ThinkPad Z series is new for Lenovo, where the company is exploring more premium form factors and offering alternative specifications to suit the needs of different customers. With any first-gen product it’s easy to screw up design, yet the Z13 is the complete opposite of that. Lenovo hit it out of the park with this laptop. I was sent the Vegan Leather Black model which has brushed copper-colored accents, vegan leather on the lid, and a deep black aluminum chassis that looks every bit as premium as it sounds. The sides are completely flat and buck the trend of sloping to make the machine seem thinner than it is, and it weighs under three pounds so you barely notice it in your backpack. Lenovo even managed to minimize its impact on the environment with recycled materials, like 75 percent recycled aluminum and vegan leather made of water bottles. The footprint of this laptop is also delightful. Since the screen is 13.3-inches and isn’t surrounded by huge bezels, Lenovo was able to shave down the Z13 a considerable amount so that it could be as small a rectangle as possible. It’s definitely one of the most portable laptops I’ve used in recent years. IO is pretty limited, with just two USB-C 4 ports and a headphone jack. This probably won’t be a big deal for most users since so many gadgets have switched to USB-C at this point, but if you’re someone still using USB-A or full-fledged HDMI, you’ll need to pick up some dongles. On the bright side, you can charge the Z13 from either side of the laptop, which is always really convenient. Keyboard, trackpad, speakers, and ThinkPad bonuses Opening the laptop (which easily can be done with one hand), you’re greeted by an edge-to-edge keyboard and pressure-sensitive trackpad. Lenovo has been transitioning a lot of its more premium laptops to trackpads with haptic feedback, which let you click pretty much anywhere opposed to the lower-half like on moving trackpads. This next-generation Haptic ForcePad doesn’t have any significant issues, but it’s still not as fine-tuned as something like Apple’s haptic trackpad on the MacBook. Two-finger right clicks would occasionally take a couple of tries to register, and trying to select text with my pointer and middle fingers would often lead to the cursor somehow slipping out of my control and selecting more text than I wanted. On the other hand, the keyboard is phenomenal. I’ve never used a ThinkPad with a bad keyboard, and the Z13 is no exception. Lenovo includes 1.35mm of travel on each key, which makes typing incredibly satisfying and comfortable. It stretches to each edge of the deck of the laptop to maximize the typing surface, and it’s simply delightful to use. There’s even a fingerprint scanner conveniently hidden in the lower portion of the keyboard which helps it blend in with the rest of the design. You’ll find frosted glass as the palm rest on the Z13 which isn’t any more or less comfortable than another hard surface, but it makes the laptop essentially impossible to keep clean. The speakers are flanked on either side of the deck of the laptop on the bottom, and they sound… fine. They’re tuned with Dolby Atmos so they have good clarity at high volumes, but I noticed that bass is a bit lacking and everything sounds a bit tinny when you start cranking them up. Regardless, they’re not bad for ThinkPad speakers which notoriously are pretty rough. Returning from past ThinkPads are the signature TrackPoint in the middle of the keyboard, three-button mouse controls at the top of the trackpad, and the Communications bar above the display. The TrackPoint gets some extra functionality with the Z13 thanks to a new quick settings menu that appears by triple-tapping it. It’s full of a handful of different controls like brightness and contrast for the webcam, microphone adjustments, and quick access to Microsoft Dictation. The Communications bar also gets upgraded, this time with a 1080p webcam and dual microphones. Then there’s the triple mouse buttons that are pressure-sensitive and work just like the old physical version. If you don’t want to use them, you can disable them and take advantage of the full surface of the trackpad. When paired with the row of special Function keys at the top for things like answering calls, disabling the webcam, and flicking on airplane mode, these features round off a unique ThinkPad experience, one that Lenovo is known for and any business user will appreciate. It’s especially nice to see on such a portable form factor like the Z13 has, so you can really take it wherever you go (even if that means plucking down on a small table at a coffee shop or sitting in the middle seat on a plane). Display Despite all the positive things I have to say about everything around the display on the Z13, I was unfortunately not very impressed by the screen Lenovo includes here. It’s a pretty standard 13.3-inch 16:10 IPS panel with a 1920×1200 resolution and 400 nits of brightness. In the world of premium laptops, it really doesn’t get much more basic than that. Indoors, I can’t say that I had many problems with the display, beyond just how dull and unexciting it was to look at. Colors are vibrant enough to look good, but black levels are pretty disappointing. The second you take it outside, however, things take a turn for the worst. Because it’s only 400 nits, you can pretty much forget about using this laptop in any setting that doesn’t have an ample amount of shade. Even then, you have to crank the brightness up so that you don’t have to squint to see what’s on the screen. There are plenty of laptops in this price range with brighter screens, so if you do a lot of work outside or just want that flexibility, you’ll have better luck elsewhere. There is a nicer screen option for the Z13, where Lenovo uses an OLED panel instead of IPS and a higher 2.8K resolution. I didn’t get to test that one, but I assume it looks much better than the one I have. That being said, it too is 400 nits, so maybe not all that much better. Performance and battery life My ThinkPad Z13 came with an eight-core AMD Ryzen 7 Pro 6850U processor clocked at 2.5GHz, with up to a 4.7GHz boost clock speed. It’s paired with 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB of PCIe Gen 4 SSD storage, as well as Windows 11. A spec blend like this, at least for my workload, is typically a recipe for good performance. My day-to-day consists of not much more than writing things in Google Docs or Microsoft Word, managing my calendar, editing photos in Lightroom, playing music, and joining the occasional Zoom meeting. But to my surprise, this was oddly all a bit of a struggle on the Z13. Out of the box, the machine is set to “Balanced” in the performance mode section of settings. This throttles performance to increase efficiency, and it’s the setting you have to have on if you want the battery life Lenov...

How Crypto Billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried Survived The Market Wreckage And Still Expanded His Empire – CNBC https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/how-crypto-billionaire-sam-bankman-fried-survived-the-market-wreckage-and-still-expanded-his-empire-cnbc/ FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried has been shopping for bargains amid the industry’s recent carnage and said he still has cash to spend if opportunity knocks. It may seem strange. Other multi-billion-dollar crypto giants spiraled into bankruptcy this year. FTX’s main competitor, Coinbase, has seen its shares plunge 70% and has laid off a fifth of its workforce as crypto prices crashed. related investing news Yet, FTX is somehow emerging as an industry lifeline. The 30-year-old billionaire says it was a result of stashing away ample cash, keeping overhead low, avoiding lending and being able to move quickly as a private company. “It was important that the industry get through this in one piece,” Bankman-Fried told CNBC in an interview at FTX headquarters in Nassau, Bahamas. “It’s not going to be good for anyone long-term if we have real pain and real blowouts — it’s not fair to customers and it’s not going to be good for regulation.” The crypto industry saw billions of dollars wiped out during the weeks surrounding the implosion of cryptocurrency Terra USD and the failure of crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital. Lenders with exposure to Three Arrows were the next domino to fall. In July, FTX signed a deal that gives it the option to buy lender BlockFi after providing a $250 million line of credit. FTX also extended $500 million to struggling Voyager Digital, which later declared bankruptcy, and was in discussions to acquire South Korean Bithumb. Bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency, has lost more than half its value this year. ‘Not immune’ While Bankman-Fried’s cryptocurrency exchange FTX is suffering from the downturn in digital assets, he said market share growth helped offset the pain. “I don’t think we’re immune from it,” Bankman-Fried said. “But we put a lot of work in to growing our footprint over the last year … and we have a less retail heavy platform — retail tends to be more market-sentiment-dependent.” Most of FTX’s volume comes from customers trading “at least” $100,000 per day, he said. Bankman-Fried described the group as “highly engaged, high volume” users that are “fairly sophisticated.” It ranges from small quant trading firms to family offices and day traders. FTX’s demographic has been less price sensitive and held up relatively well in crypto’s bear market, according to the company. In addition to its success with professional traders, it’s making an expensive land grab for the U.S. retail trading audience. FTX bought the the naming rights to the Miami Heat’s NBA arena, formerly American Airlines Center. It has courted high-profile investors and brand ambassadors including Tom Brady and Giselle Bündchen, and ran a Super Bowl ad featuring Larry David. The cryptocurrency exchange brought in roughly a billion dollars in revenue last year, CNBC reported in August. Bankman-Fried confirmed that the numbers were in the “right ballpark” and this year would see a “similar” figure, depending on how severe the market slowdown is. He also said the company is profitable. He pointed to low employee headcount as one factor accounting for profitability. FTX has roughly 350 employees — about a tenth of Coinbase’s workforce. “We’ve always tried to grow in a sustainable way — I’ve always been deeply suspicious of negative unit economics, any economics without any sort of real, clear pathway to profitability,” he said. “We hired a lot less than most places did but we’ve also kind of kept our costs under control.” Bankman-Fried earned a degree in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and started his career as a quantitative trader at Jane Street Capital. He bought his first bitcoin five years ago, and said he was drawn to the industry by wide arbitrage opportunities that seemed “too good to be true.” In 2017, Bankman-Fried launched proprietary trading firm Alameda Research to start trading the asset full time. The firm was making a million dollars a day in some cases, buying on an exchange in one market, and selling back on other global exchanges, according to the CEO. Alameda Research still accounts for about 6% of FTX’s exchange volumes, according to documents seen by CNBC. While Bankman-Fried is still a major shareholder Alameda, he stepped down from day-to-day operations. Bankman-Fried said he’s worked over the past few years to eliminate conflicts of interest at Alameda. “I don’t run Alameda anymore — none of FTX does. We view it as a neutral piece of market infrastructure.” FTX has seen epic growth since Bankman-Fried launched it alongside co-founder Gary Wang in 2019. It last raised $400 million in January at a $32 billion valuation, bringing its total venture capital funding in the past three years to about $2 billion. FTX Trading Ltd. is headquartered in Antigua, with FTX Derivatives Markets based in the Bahamas, where Bankman-Fried lives. FTX Trading has acquired companies in Switzerland, Australia, Cyprus, Germany, Gibraltar, Singapore, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, among other countries. The exchange has spent about half of its cash on bailouts and acquisitions, most recently buying a 30% stake in Anthony Scaramucci’s Skybridge Capital. “We still have a fair bit left to deploy, if and when it’s useful or important,” Bankman-Fried said. Three-day deals FTX benefited from being a private company this year. FTX doesn’t have the daily ups and downs of a publicly traded stock, especially growth stocks, which this year have been battered by higher interest rates. Bankman-Fried also said not having thousands of shareholders enabled FTX to move quickly when trying to close deals in a matter of days. “I do think it makes it a lot harder, practically speaking, to do this as a public company,” he said. When “you have three days from start to finish to wire the money, you can’t do a public engagement process around the potential terms of a messy situation.” Bankman-Fried said many of the deals were done in a matter of days, when the team “didn’t sleep much that week.” What’s often lengthy due diligence came instead in a truncated Excel spreadsheet. The finances weren’t audited. The team had at least some expectation of losing money. “It was unclear if it would be net positive or negative — there was potential upside in a case where things went well,” he said. “We got to the point of feeling like we could do something that would have a non-trivial chance of helping for an amount of money that we were willing to lose if things went wrong.” It’s too soon to tell if Bankman-Fried’s distressed crypto bets will pay off. Some companies have said no to a rescue package altogether. After extending a line of credit to Voyager, FTX and Alameda looked to buy and and restructure the company. It outlined a plan to buy Voyager’s digital assets and loans at market value. The company responded to the bid calling it a “low ball bid dressed up as a white knight rescue.” “It surprised me. It didn’t surprise our legal team,” he said. “I had honestly just assumed they’d see our offer and just say … of course, we’ll take this.” Bankman-Fried said there were further discussions and the answers were “disappointing.” The problem, he said, was that the proposal didn’t take any fees. “If you’re in the business of taking fees, then maybe our proposal isn’t what you like,” he said. “I believe it was a lowball offer for consultants looking to make fees on this case. That’s not who I had had in mind. I had the customers in mind. But that is my current best understanding about what happened.” The next … Warren Buffett? Bankman-Fried’s latest moves in crypto have drawn comparisons to Warren Buffett’s strategy in 2008. The legendary Berkshire Hathaway chairman and CEO stopped the bleeding during the financial crisis with a $5 billion investment in Goldman Sachs. That eventually brought the Omaha-based conglomerate a $3 billion gain. “There are some parallels,” Bankman-Fried said. “There are probably more differences. First of all, I don’t think Warren Buffett would call me the next Warren Buffett. To the extent there is a parallel recently, it’s been looking at which assets are in a place where they pretty badly need capital.” Bankman-Fried said he’s finding spots where he can “simultaneously make good investments, and help backstop them and their customers and ecosystem.” Although sometimes only one is on offer, not both. He also applauded Buffett’s skill in long-term, value investing. The investor has showed that “you don’t need to have one brilliant innovation or insight, you can do it by just piecing together good decision after good decision over the course of decades and compounding that.” Like Buffett, Bankman-Fried signed the Giving Pledge: a promise by the world’s wealthiest individuals to donate the majority of their wealth to charity. Bankman-Fried said he has given away roughly $100 million this year, with a focus on future pandemic prevention. Similar to Buffett, he lives modestly. Bankman-Fried shares a house with ten roommates and a Goldendoodle named Gopher. He drives a Toyota Corolla, and said he has no interest in the excesses of a yacht or Lamborghini. But the two humble investors sharply diverge when it comes to their positions on cryptocurrencies. Buffett and his business partner Charlie Munger have been critical of cryptocurrencies over the years. In 2018, for example, Buffett called bitcoin “probably rat poison squared.” Earlier this year, Buffett said he wouldn’t buy all the bitcoin in the world for $25 because it “doesn’t produce anything.” Buffett has called the underlying blockchain technology “important” — but hasn’t wavered on the idea that “bitcoin has no unique value at all.” Blockchains are digital data bases ...

Her reading begins at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, at the Leach Theatre in Castleman Hall on the S&T campus, located at 400 W. 10th St. in Rolla. The event, which includes a reception with light refreshments and book signing immediately following Dove’s reading, is free and open to the public. “It’s truly an honor to have Rita Dove launch our series of distinguished literary speakers,” says Dr. Karen Head, director of Missouri S&T’s Center for Arts and Innovation, which is sponsoring Dove’s visit. “In her poetry and in her advocacy, she has been unwavering in her commitment to underscoring how important the literary arts are to all of us. Her approach to working across disciplines is a perfect model for the work we’re undertaking at Missouri S&T to complement science and technology with a perspective informed by creativity.” Dove is the Henry Hoyns Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Virginia, where she has taught since 1989. She is a member of the American Philosophical Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Academy of Arts and Letters. Former President Bill Clinton awarded her the National Humanities Medal in 1996, and in 2011, she received the National Medal of Arts from former President Barack Obama – making her the only poet ever to receive both medals. The recipient of the 2022 Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize for Lifetime Achievement awarded by the Poetry Foundation, Dove has received 28 honorary doctorates and is a trained classical cellist. Born and raised in Ohio, Dove’s poetry, essays and plays are known for being both lyrical and accessible, a reflection of her commitment to social justice, and for weaving the African-American experience into the broader fabric of international culture. In 2021, NASA imprinted Dove’s poetry on Lucy, a remotely controlled spacecraft currently on a 12-year exploration of the Jupiter Trojan asteroids. Along with the words of Albert Einstein, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and others, Dove’s poetry is intended for future explorers. Thomas and Beulah, for which she won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1987, is a collection of related poems based loosely on the lives of her grandparents, while American Smooth, published in 2004, is a reflection on her experience with ballroom dancing. Sonata Mulattica: A Life in Five Movements and a Short Play is a collection of poems published in 2009 that examines the life of biracial violinist George Polgreen Bridgetower, particularly his friendship with Ludwig van Beethoven. In Playlist for the Apocalypse, published in 2021, her first volume of new poems in more than a decade, Dove turns her eye to experiments in democracy, in the U.S. and elsewhere. She incorporates a vast array of voices, including a resentful elevator operator, an exuberant mambo dancer who is also an octogenarian, and a spring cricket whose philosophical musings address hip hop, critics, and Valentine’s Day. EU Drafts Media Act Amid Concern Over Spying, State Pressure – 69News WFMZ-TV https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/eu-drafts-media-act-amid-concern-over-spying-state-pressure-69news-wfmz-tv/ BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union’s executive branch unveiled plans Friday for new laws that it said would help protect media freedom and independence in the 27-nation bloc at a time of mounting concern about the dangers of political influence in several member countries. Spurred into action allegations of state spying on reporters, the use of political pressure on news outlets and the placing of advertising to peddle influence, the European Commission said the EU needs a European Media Freedom Act. “We see a lot of worrying trends regarding media in Europe, and it’s not only a matter of one or two countries,” European Commission Vice President Vera Jourova told reporters in Brussels. She said the proposed legislation is needed “for the times we live in, not for the times we would like to live in.” The commission has criticized the governments of Hungary, Poland and Slovenia in recent years for trying to pressure their national media. But EU officials say they see the risk of political influence in more than 20 member countries. “We need to establish clear principles: No journalist should be spied on because of their job. No public media should be turned into propaganda channel,” Jourova said. The main thrust of the new act is to protect media outlets from governments attempting to determine what they can publish or broadcast, and to prevent countries from spying on media workers. The legislation also aims to ensure stable funding of public service media and to make media ownership more transparent. The proposal would only take effect once it has been debated and endorsed by EU member countries and the European Parliament. The centerpiece of the legislation would create an independent body, made up of national media authorities, to issue opinions on national measures and decisions affecting media markets and media market ownership. But the opinions of the European Board for Media Services would not be binding on national authorities. Jourova rejected suggestions that the board would be answerable to the European Commission or serve as an oversight body that itself keeps tabs on what reporters and editors are doing. “We are not going to regulate the media themselves, but the space for media,” she said. The act would ban the use of spyware against journalists and their families, with exceptions only for investigations of crimes such as terrorism, child abuse or murder. Journalists would have the right to judicial protection, and countries would set up an independent authority to handle complaints. The allocation of state advertising to media would also be made more transparent. Officials say that 21 countries are at medium to high risk of misusing advertising revenue to influence editors and journalists. The plan is the commission’s second recent foray into the media world. On Sept. 6, it launched a consortium of 18 European news agencies to “carry out independent reporting on EU affairs.” The European Newsroom benefits from around 1.8 million euros ($1.8 million) in EU funding. Sebastian Yatra Talks Dharma World Tour Encanto Colombian Roots USA TODAY
Sebastian Yatra Talks Dharma World Tour Encanto Colombian Roots USA TODAY
Sebastian Yatra Talks Dharma World Tour, ‘Encanto,’ Colombian Roots – USA TODAY https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/sebastian-yatra-talks-dharma-world-tour-encanto-colombian-roots-usa-today/ You may know Sebastián Yatra as the angelic voice behind the Oscar-nominated song “Dos Oruguitas” from Disney’s “Encanto.” But onstage, the Colombian singer is ripping his shirt off on his way to heartthrob status.  On one of the hottest weekends in Los Angeles, the 27-year-old had the crowd – even the señoras – all hot and bothered inside the YouTube theater in Inglewood, California, as he lobbed his sweaty shirt at screaming admirers eager to take some Yatra memorabilia home. And toward the end of his 24-song set, during “Robarte Un Beso,” the singer did as the song said and stole a kiss from a fan.  Yatra knows he’s the one putting on the show “but my fans are giving me a show as well,” he says. “It’s just magical to be onstage with them, we’re all exchanging energy.” The North American leg of his Dharma world tour, through November, marks the first time he’s performed solo on this side of the globe. But with a stage presence like that, you wouldn’t be able to tell. Perhaps it helped that Latin music powerhouses Ricky Martin and Enrique Iglesias took Yatra under their wing for their co-headlining U.S. arena tour in 2021.  “I learned a lot from them,” Yatra says. “You’ll definitely see a beautiful evolution.”  ‘We love our roots’: Enrique Iglesias praises Latin music fans as he launches tour with Ricky Martin Songs of summer: Bad Bunny, Karol G, more Spanish-language artists dominate Spotify’s list Yatra’s 2022 has been full of career milestones. In January, he released “Dharma,” his third studio album, and in March, he hit the Oscars, “the biggest stage in the world,” to perform the Lin-Manuel Miranda-written ballad “Dos Oruguitas,” which was up for best original song. Yatra calls it “life-changing.”  Now, he’s basking it all in as he crosses state lines in a lavish tour bus.  Question: How do you take care of yourself mentally and physically while you’re on tour?  Answer: I lead a pretty healthy lifestyle … I train every day, I’m eating healthy, and my mind is in a good place. I read and I also talk to my psychologist once a week. I give my personal well-being and my emotions a very important place. I give them that priority that is necessary – not only as a singer but in general.  On the Road Again: Giveon is ‘not big on parties’ during his Give or Take tour … or ever ‘Party days are over’: Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean reveals how he stays healthy (and sober) on tour You don’t box yourself in within a genre and your discography – pop, reggaeton, ballads and flamenco – is proof. Have you ever felt pressured to change your sound?  I have at some points done things that aren’t really my essence. But then I realize it’s not the way to go because people don’t believe it too much when I have done the type of songs that just don’t flow with (my style). It’s important for it to happen, too, because it’s a reminder, “Hey, man, just follow your heart.”  In a competitive industry, how do you stay true to yourself and follow your heart?  I try to not go as fast as the rest of the world or look side to side (to what others are doing). It’s about focusing on your own things, enjoying them and having fun. ‘I’m not going to become boring’: J Balvín says becoming a father won’t change how he dresses If you’re living like you’re lacking something, it’s because you’re doing your tours and you’re seeing your songs having great success but then you’re (checking) what other artists are having more success than you. Then you’re like, “Why is this person achieving more than me?” That’s not good, that’s when you can get consumed by this industry or by life in general.  ‘I really found my voice’: Becky G shares advice to artists, importance of singing in Spanish Despite growing up in Miami and being fluent in English, you mainly sing in Spanish. Why?  I always knew I wanted to sing in Spanish. It was my calling. It’s where I’m from. I think and sleep in Spanish. I grew up listening to a lot of Spanish music and I wanted to write (music) in Spanish and so I decided to leave the U.S., go back to Colombia and start there. It’s been the best decision I’ve made in my life. It’s connected me with my Colombian culture and with so many other cultures of Latin America. I feel like I have a lot to offer.  Now, if I decide to sing in English, it’ll have a lot of that culture, passion, love and spark from Latin America. I am bicultural (and it’s) a huge blessing. How’d that happen? ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ from ‘Encanto’ is now a No. 1 hit How did it feel to perform “Dos Oruguitas” at the Oscars earlier this year?  It’s completely surreal. It’s like one of those dreams you have that you wake up from thinking, “How was that a dream?” This was literally that dream. Everything I could have wished for happened that night. In such a magical way (I was) representing the 600 million Spanish-speaking people in the world, our culture, our way of feeling, our way of thinking, and representing my country. And our land, our customs, our food and our love – “Encanto” has done such a beautiful job of painting a beautiful picture of Colombia for the world.

Heres Why You Should Steer Clear Of The Stunning Lotus Esprit Turbo HotCars
Heres Why You Should Steer Clear Of The Stunning Lotus Esprit Turbo HotCars
Here’s Why You Should Steer Clear Of The Stunning Lotus Esprit Turbo – HotCars https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/heres-why-you-should-steer-clear-of-the-stunning-lotus-esprit-turbo-hotcars/ The most iconic James Bond of them all, Sir Roger Moore, had charm, the best adventures and the most stunning cars. In The Spy Who Loved Me, a Lotus Esprit saves Bond’s life. The famous British spy escapes a dangerous chase in Sardinia just to crash into the sea, where he hides from a female villain who tries to assassinate him from a helicopter. In the water, the Lotus Esprit transforms into a submarine packed with cool gadgets, which helps eliminate the enemy. Although Eon Productions released the movie in 1977, even today the chase scene is one of the best. In fact, the action scenes transformed the Lotus Esprit into a cult car. Fast-forward to 1981 and Bond gets another mission in For Your Eyes Only. Even on this occasion, 007 makes a comeback in the storied Lotus Esprit, although this time it is a Series 3. This time, Bond maneuvers the vehicle around the Italian ski-resort of Cortina. The Bond franchise made the Lotus Esprit so famous that it even enchanted a real-life billionaire like the eccentric Elon Musk. And the actual life story of how the 1976 Lotus Esprit used in the filming of The Spy Who Loved Me ended up with Musk is as intriguing as a Bond movie. In 1989, a couple from Long Island paid around $100 for an unclaimed storage unit, according to CNBC. Inside the unit, they found the 1976 Lotus Esprit from James Bond that they auctioned in 2013 via RM Sotheby’s. The lucky buyer was Musk himself, who paid $997,000 for the car. Without a doubt, the Lotus Esprit is a legend, and entire generations learned to love this automobile thanks to the Bond franchise. This is especially true for the Turbo model, regarded as one of the fastest-accelerating automobiles during its prime, but even with all of its special characteristics, there are still some reasons to avoid buying this vehicle. Clutch And Gearbox Problems Via:netcars Owners of the Lotus Esprit Turbo vehicles frequently ask for help with their clutch and gearbox in social media posts. For example, on YouTube, a Lotus Esprit owner shows how his car is growling. In the video, the driver says that sometimes when he pushes the clutch all the way down, he hears the horrible noise. To be fair, the YouTuber isn’t the only one who had to overcome this issue. In fact, on the Lotus Forums, various users complain about the same problem. GTE_Peter wrote in a post in 2015 that he owns a 1986 Esprit Turbo, which wasn’t used for a while, but he intends to revamp and re-spray it. When GTE_Peter took the car for a ride, he heard “a worrying vibration/noise from the clutch.” “When I press clutch pedal and then raise the pedal slightly, it causes massive vibrations and grating type noise. It does this whether it is in gear or not. Once moving, it all feels fine,” says GTE_Peter. Needless to say, that there are other forum posts discussing “how bad the Esprit gearbox is.” However, Esprit supporters have pointed out that several gearbox difficulties got overstated and “Lotus tested the gearbox for endurance many times.” Timing Belts Issues On The Esprit Via: Mecum Auctions According to Car and Driver, the final four-cylinder Esprits had different versions of the Lotus 2.2-liter engine, which produced 300 horsepower for the S4S and 264 horsepower for the SE and S4 models, respectively. “Because of this engine’s high-stress life,” says Car and Driver, “owners must replace the timing belt every five years or 25,000 miles.” The online publication also points out that a broken timing belt is extremely expensive. Although this might not sound like a serious issue, the reality is that a malfunction at the timing belt could lead to engine performance problems. On different forums and websites, owners and even mechanics are asking for help with timing belts issues; thus, it seems like the problem is widespread. High Service And Repairs Costs Via Bring A Trailer While the Lotus Esprit Turbo has a reasonable price, it isn’t the same for service and maintenance costs. Car and Driver recommends regular oil changes and new spark plugs that should come with every oil change. The car publication also lists the likely repairs that will be necessary, which include a very costly timing belt replacement, transaxle replacement, clutch replacement, and front and rear brakes, to name just a few. Currently, the labor costs have surged because of inflation, so Esprit enthusiasts need to take this into account when they budget for repair and maintenance costs. Unfortunately, many of the Lotus Esprit parts are difficult to source, and this increases the costs. Additionally, not all mechanics are knowledgeable about servicing the Esprit, making it difficult to locate the correct workshop.

Crypto Miners From US EU Stay Put In Russia Despite War Sanctions CoinDesk
Crypto Miners From US EU Stay Put In Russia Despite War Sanctions CoinDesk
Crypto Miners From US, EU Stay Put In Russia Despite War, Sanctions – CoinDesk https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/crypto-miners-from-us-eu-stay-put-in-russia-despite-war-sanctions-coindesk/ Anna Baydakova is an investigative reporter with a special focus on Eastern Europe and Russia. Anna owns BTC. After Russia started the war in Ukraine in February, the European Union and U.S. expanded sanctions. Western companies fled Russia, leaving behind facilities, goods and local staff. You would think the Russian cryptocurrency mining market, long popular for cheap Siberian hydropower, would feel the heat, too. In April, one of the largest mining companies in Russia, BitRiver, was hit by U.S. sanctions. That immediately affected BitRiver’s business: Compass, a U.S. mining company, ceased doing business with BitRiver and reportedly tried to sell the hardware it placed in BitRiver’s facility in Siberia. The machines got stuck in negotiations between the erstwhile partners. Then, Japanese bank SBI said it was out of Russia – meaning, out of BitRiver’s farm, as CoinDesk reported. However, no other Russian mining firms have been sanctioned so far, and clients from the EU and U.S. aren’t leaving in a panic – on the contrary, old clients have stayed and some new ones have come in, say people in the industry. “Nothing changed. In crypto, people don’t care about these sanctions. Everyone who has been working here keeps working,” said Artem Eremin, CEO of Chilkoot, a mining hardware reseller. The reason: Russia is still an attractive place for mining thanks to cheap electricity, even more so now when other previously popular jurisdictions have made life harder for miners. China outlawed mining last year. Kazakhstan cut off all power to mines for several months in early 2021 and increased energy costs for miners with a new tax this year. “There is nowhere else to go,” Eremin said. MEATEC, a German company, is operating a mining facility at a former abandoned factory in Irkutsk, one of the largest cities in Siberia. The firm currently has 110 megawatts (MW) of hosting capacity, of which 40 MW are unoccupied, and is looking to add another 60 MW before the end of this year, Dan Haas, MEATEC’s CEO and co-founder, told CoinDesk. This capacity, comparable to BitRiver’s, is in high demand among clients from Germany, the U.K., the U.S., Canada, Iran, Japan, New Zealand and other countries as well as local Russian miners, said MEATEC’s head of foreign relations, Alexander Swid. Europe accounts for around 50% of the mix; Russia, up to 30%. The U.S. makes up about 10% and “a big request” for placement of specialized mining chips, known as ASICs, came from the U.S. recently, Haas said. “No client is leaving,” Swid said. Even now – with the ruble stronger against the U.S. dollar than it was before the war and electricity prices (which are set in rubles) higher – Russia remains a preferable mining location, Swid said. MEATEC started its mining business in 2017 in Austria, Haas said. However, electricity prices there were not attractive. Later, MEATEC partnered with a U.S.-based mining farm (neither Haas nor Swid would name it), but the collaboration was not satisfying, Haas said: according to him, the uptime on the facility was usually around 60% to 70%, meaning the hardware was running no more than 70% of time. In 2017, MEATEC moved to Russia, repurposed the abandoned factory into a mining farm and signed a 65-year contract with Irkutskenergo, the local power grid company, according to Haas and Swid. For several years the company kept a low profile and didn’t do any marketing, so clients had to find MEATEC through word of mouth. The reason miners from the U.S. and Europe are interested in MEATEC’s Siberian venue is that the local electricity grid has a lot of spare capacity. In the U.S., by contrast, the recent heat wave stretched power resources thin and miners had to unplug a few times, noted Tatiana Yakim, the chief financial officer of Summit Mining, an Ireland-based mining company working mostly with customers in France. Summit Mining’s business essentially started in Russia, Yakim told CoinDesk, when founder Mathieu Vincent asked her to help set up his mining equipment there in 2019. Now, Summit has hardware in the U.S., Canada and Iceland as well, but Russian farms in Irkutsk and Krasnoyarsk still host 40% of the 20,000 machines the firm is operating worldwide, Yakim said. All the machines in Russia were purchased before the war started in February 2022, she said. The news of the war and sanctions did not worry Summit’s clients, Yakim said: The matter hardly came up during Vincent’s weekly ask-me-anything (AMA) sessions. However, the firm decided to scrap a plan to build its own mining facility in Russia, which had been in the final stages of approval just this winter. In early February, the company was about to invest 1 million euros (about US$1 million) in building its first mining farm in Russia, Yakim said. So far, Summit has been hosting its machines in venues owned by big Russian mining firms – she wouldn’t say which ones. But after the war started the project was shut down. “It’s not clear how far the sanctions will go,” Yakim said. “If something goes wrong, it’s not clear how to get money out of Russia and back to our European company.” Now, Summit only considers expansion into the U.S. and Canada, Yakim added. The main problem with Russia now is that no European bank will send money to a Russian company, Yakim said, even if the Russian company uses a bank not on any sanction list. “If you’re a new miner in Europe and are trying to send money to Russia for the first time, your bank would ask questions [about] why you suddenly started doing business with Russia,” she said. However, banks in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates continue to do business with their Russian counterparts, Yakim said. As for Summit, it has found a solution to send money to and from Russia through a bank outside of Europe, Yakim said, without naming the institution. Ninety percent of Summit’s clients are French, Yakim said, mining mainly bitcoin (BTC) and ether (ETH mining machines are on sale now due to Ethereum’s switch to a different consensus protocol, proof-of-stake instead of proof-of-work). Scary precedent or nothing? BitRiver was the first mining company to have the dubious honor of being listed on the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) list, and its case was different from other sanctioned crypto projects such as the over-the-counter (OTC) broker Suex, the Chatex exchange and non-custodial mixer Tornado Cash (all with Russian roots as well). BitRiver was not accused of any wrongdoing, such as money laundering; the problem was that mining companies “help Russia monetize its natural resources,” according to an OFAC press release from April. “The United States is committed to ensuring that no asset, no matter how complex, becomes a mechanism for the Putin regime to offset the impact of sanctions,” the document explained. MEATEC took the news in stride: The company’s main legal entity, MEATEC LLC, is registered in the republic of Georgia, and the firm owns two companies registered in Russia, so “there is no risk,” Swid said. “We are working with lawyers specializing in global sanctions and they said we’re not violating any sanction at the moment,” Yakim said. These days, miners working in Russia are hiding their actual beneficial owners more often than they once did, Chilkoot’s Eremin said, but the demand for Russian mining farms stays high. Some miners from the West left their equipment in Russia and quit, but others are sitting tight and continuing to mine, Nikita Vassev, founder of a popular mining conference in Russia, TerraCrypto, told CoinDesk. Every four years, the Bitcoin network’s software reduces by 50% the amount of new bitcoin paid to miners for mining a block, making this business more challenging over time. “Now it’s an important time: only two years left before the next halving, and everyone understands they need to work hard to make some money before the rewards are cut in half,” Vassev said. “Not a single client [from Europe and America] has left,” Sergey Arestov, co-founder of a Russian mining firm BitCluster, told CoinDesk, adding that Chinese clients, in the meantime, are as willing to mine in Russia as ever. He acknowledged that purely pragmatic issues have arisen after the war started and sanctions were imposed on Russia. As the country became more isolated from the global financial system and payments to and from Russia became problematic, clients from the West stopped importing new mining equipment to Russian mining sites. Plus, the extraordinarily high exchange rate of the Russian ruble against the greenback, combined with the low dollar price of bitcoin, makes mining in Russia less profitable, Arestov added. When the war started, some of BitCluster’s clients put on hold transporting their machines to Russia, but then, everything resumed as usual. “People looked around, saw that the nuclear war didn’t start and got back to work,” Arestov said. Russia Vows To Continue Mir Card Expansion After New U.S. Sanctions – Reuters.com https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/russia-vows-to-continue-mir-card-expansion-after-new-u-s-sanctions-reuters-com/ A Russian state flag flies over the Central Bank headquarters in Moscow, Russia March 29, 2021. A sign reads: “Bank of Russia”. REUTERS/Maxim Shemetov Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com LONDON, Sept 16 (Reuters) – Russia’s central bank on Friday pledged to keep expanding the number of countries that accept its Mir bank cards after new U.S. sanctions targeting people and entities accused of helping Moscow skirt financial sanctions. The United States on Thursday sanctioned the chief executive of the Bank of Russia’s National Card Payment System (NSPK), which runs Mir, saying it was seeking to hold the Russian government accountable for its Feb. 24 invasion and continuing war against Ukraine. read more “Russia has scrambled to find new ways to process payments and conduct transactions,” the U.S. Treasury said. “Directly and indirectly, Russia’s financial technocrats have supported the Kremlin’s unprovoked war.” Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The importance of Mir cards for Russians rose substantially this year after U.S. payments firms Visa Inc (V.N) and Mastercard Inc (MA.N) suspended operations in Russia and their cards that were issued in Russia stopped working abroad. Cuba, South Korea, Turkey, Vietnam and a handful of former Soviet republics accept Mir, which means both “peace” and “world” in Russian, with others such as Iran intending to follow suit soon. The central bank said Mir cards and other NSPK services would continue working as usual in Russia. “Foreign partners themselves take decisions about opening their infrastructure to accept Mir cards,” the central bank said. “At the same time, we intend to continue dialogue about expanding the geography of Mir card acceptance.” The U.S. Treasury said it had blacklisted 22 individuals, including four financial executives whose actions could directly or indirectly support Russia’s war effort by helping it evade financial sanctions imposed on Russia after the invasion. One of those four was named as Vladimir Komlev, the head of NSPK. “Russia created its own state-run card payment system in 2014 out of fear of U.S. and European sanctions,” the Treasury said. “In his role, Komlev has promoted the Mir network in other countries, which ultimately could assist Russia in circumventing international sanctions.” NSPK did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Moscow says that what it calls a “special military operation” in Ukraine was necessary to prevent its neighbour being used as a platform for Western aggression, and to defend Russian-speakers. Kyiv and its Western allies dismiss these arguments as baseless pretexts for an imperial-style war of aggression. 3 Tricks To Send WhatsApp Messages To Any Unsaved Contact – Firstpost https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/3-tricks-to-send-whatsapp-messages-to-any-unsaved-contact-firstpost/ Akash KumarSep 16, 2022 18:12:36 IST With millions of users, WhatsApp is one of the most popular chat apps worldwide. Using the app, we can connect with people all around the world. In India, it continues to be the most widely used messaging service with more than 400 million users. Numerous helpful services, such as chatting, voice calling, video calling, payments, and others, are currently available on the app. Although, the Meta-owned platform hasn’t yet added some features that users have been expecting. Sending messages to contacts who haven’t been saved on the phone contacts is one of these options. Sending WhatsApp messages to an unsaved phone number is officially impossible till date. This is a crucial feature because many WhatsApp privacy settings are limited to ‘My Contacts.’ So, in order to communicate with someone on WhatsApp, you must first save their contact before you can start chatting with them. However, there are a few methods you can use to message someone whose name has not been saved on your contact list or someone you are not familiar with. Here are three of those tricks that can help you to solve the problem: By using any web browser: On your phone, open any internet browser. Then, type the link, “http://wa.me/91xxxxxxxxxx” in the search box and tap ‘Enter’. In the ‘XXXXX’ format, paste the phone number with the appropriate country code. To open the link after entering the number, hit ‘Enter.’ Your browser will take you to the WhatsApp screen. To continue the chat, hit the green ‘Continue Chat’ button. The WhatsApp chat window of the attached mobile number will be launched. By using Siri Shortcut on iPhones: On your iPhone, launch the Apple Shortcuts app. Next, hit the “Add shortcut” button. Install the shortcut for WhatsApp to the Non-Contact segment. Tap the shortcut, once it has been installed, to access the application. A popup window will show ‘Choose recipient.’ Enter the recipient’s phone number along with the country code. The specific number’s WhatsApp conversation thread will open. Using True Caller App: Run the ‘Truecaller’ application. In the search bar, enter the phone number of the person you wish to chat with. The person’s ‘Truecaller’ profile will open. After that, scroll down and click the WhatsApp button in the profile. It will launch the WhatsApp chat window for that particular number. There are some other third-party apps available on the web to solve this issue. However, using a third-party app of this sort is not advised since it may jeopardize your security and result in the suspension of your WhatsApp account. Therefore, it is always preferable to avoid using such apps so as to protect the security of your smartphone. Find latest and upcoming tech gadgets online on Tech2 Gadgets. ‘Extremely Scary’ Or Respectful? Wave Of Cancelations And Closures For Queen Elizabeth II’s Funeral Is Drawing Fire For Stopping Daily British Life – Fortune https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/extremely-scary-or-respectful-wave-of-cancelations-and-closures-for-queen-elizabeth-iis-funeral-is-drawing-fire-for-stopping-daily-british-life-fortune/ Britain is in an official state of mourning after Queen Elizabeth II passed away last week. Huge crowds have gathered to catch a glimpse of the late monarch’s coffin, which was moved from Buckingham Palace to London’s Westminster Hall on Wednesday, where it will remain until her funeral on Monday. With the day of the funeral being declared a public holiday, many businesses have said they will close their doors for the day—but the disruption to daily life won’t end there. “Non-urgent” hospital appointments, some flights and school classes will also be canceled as organizations try to allow staff to pay their respects to the late monarch.   Here’s a round up of what Brits won’t be able to access on Monday. Healthcare fears The short-notice holiday has sparked frustration over widespread cancelations from public healthcare providers, with hospitals across the U.K. postponing “non-urgent” consultations and procedures, including maternity appointments, surgeries and some cancer treatments. “Our services will be reduced to allow staff and patients to pay their respects to Her Majesty and commemorate her reign,” Bradford Teaching Hospitals—which oversees six hospitals in northern England—said in a statement. “We are working hard to ensure any disruption is kept to a minimum but due to the bank holiday, some planned activity, including surgery, out-patient appointments and day cases, will be cancelled.” The trust added that all of its urgent and emergency services would continue as normal. Many of those with appointments have been left in limbo, with some either being given no alternative slot or still waiting to be told if their appointment will go ahead. Frustrated patients have taken to Twitter to air their irritation with the cancelation of their appointments, with one person calling the closures “scary and sad,” while a U.S. epidemiologist dubbed the move “the stupidest thing ever.” One woman based in Essex, England, had her antenatal mental health appointment on Monday rescheduled, but was told her new appointment could be delayed if other appointments run over their allotted timeslots. “I have a history of eating disorders and have been struggling with antenatal depression,” she told Fortune. “I’ve been very upset about my appointment being canceled—I had it in my diary for three weeks and had been relying on it. My pregnancy is high risk and extremely scary. I only have six to seven weeks left of my pregnancy, so any delays are stressful.” Another woman who was due to have a maternity checkup on Monday, but had it postponed due to the Queen’s funeral, told Fortune the cancelation was concerning because she had a high-risk pregnancy and a high chance of developing gestational diabetes. On Tuesday, she received a text message that told her the “sad news” of the Queen’s death and the resulting public holiday meant her appointment would be canceled, with a new appointment set to be organized “in due course.” The woman has since been given a new appointment, but said she did not understand why a holiday meant hospital appointments were being canceled. “I can only imagine how people with more serious conditions are feeling about this,” she said. Dr. Julia Patterson, founder and CEO of advocacy group Every Doctor said healthcare workers would be “damned if they do and damned if they don’t.” “I am certain that if NHS staff had failed to observe this occasion they’d be attacked,” she said in a tweet. “[But] if they take the bank holiday it leads to problems.” The cancelations of appointments on Monday comes as a record 6.8 million people are waiting to receive NHS treatment, after the pandemic exacerbated an existing waiting list problem in Britain’s public health service. Education and childcare Schools and colleges will be closed on Monday, while many nurseries and pre-schools will also not be opening. Monday 19th September will be a Bank Holiday to mark Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral. Schools and colleges will be closed for the Bank Holiday. https://t.co/T3DtHiBKgp — Department for Education (@educationgovuk) September 10, 2022 Universities will also be closed, with many higher education institutions saying they are canceling operations for the day to allow staff and students to mourn. The state funeral of Her Majesty The Queen will take place on Monday 19 September at Westminster Abbey in London. The University will be closed on that day to allow staff and students to pay their respects. More information can be found here https://t.co/WSSbXvVh6X — The University of Edinburgh (@EdinburghUni) September 15, 2022 Stores shuttering A wide array of British retailers have also said they plan to close to the public on Sept. 19. Supermarket giants Morrisons, Aldi, Lidl and will be closed, while Asda will not open until 5 p.m. During the national mourning period—which will end after the funeral on Monday—Morrisons has also turned down the “beep” sound on its cash registers and stopped playing music in its stores. Grocery retailers Tesco and Sainsbury’s will keep their large stores closed and open their convenience stores at 5 p.m., with both retailers planning to open some of their stores in central London earlier in the day to cater to people traveling to the capital to pay their respects to the Queen.   Department store chain John Lewis will not open its stores on Monday, while clothing stores Primark and Jack Wills have also announced they will be closed. Homeware stores Ikea, Homebase and B&Q, videogame chain Game and pet store giant Pets at Home are also among the major retailers that will not open on the public holiday. Flights and transport Britain’s Civil Aviation Authority said on Thursday that there would be restrictions on the airspace above and around London in the coming days. The organization noted that it would be unlikely that travelers would receive compensation for canceled flights, as cancelations would be caused by “circumstances outside of the airline’s control.” However, airlines should offer alternative travel arrangements, the CAA said. On Wednesday, London’s Heathrow Airport canceled flights to ensure they did not disturb the Queen’s coffin procession as it was moved from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall. Drone flights above central London have also been banned in the lead-up to the Queen’s funeral. We will take enforcement action against anyone using a drone without permission in the restricted area, which covers much of central London. The restrictions are for public safety. Any breaches may result in you facing prosecution and your drone being seized. https://t.co/ip2iEycctf — Metropolitan Police Events (@MetPoliceEvents) September 13, 2022 At least 16 British Airways flights due to depart from London Heathrow airport on Monday have already been canceled, while London Stansted Airport has warned travelers should prepare for disruption. Mourners hoping to head into London to pay their last respects to the late monarch have been warned to expect “unprecedented” demand for transport and in train stations, with hundreds of thousands reportedly expected to make the journey. While capacity on train networks around London is expected to increase to allow people to travel to the capital on the day of the funeral, many local bus operators will run reduced services on Monday. Leisure Most of the U.K.’s large movie theater chains, including Odeon, Showcase and Cineworld, will be closed on Monday. Cinema operators Vue, Curzon and Arc will use their theaters to screen the Queen’s funeral to the public for free. We have to decided to screen Her Majesty The Queen’s State Funeral on Bank Holiday Monday 19th September at 11am This is a free event but pre-booking your seat is essential https://t.co/ptAGWCah7W There will be no other shows taking place while the funeral is broadcast. pic.twitter.com/7UkZKX4xmz — The Arc Cinema (@CinemaArc) September 12, 2022 Bowling alley operator Hollywood Bowl will be closed until 1:30 p.m., while PureGym—which runs 320 gyms across the U.K.—will close its sites between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Monday. Many local libraries will also be closed on the public holiday. Meanwhile, Centreparcs—which runs woodland lodge-style vacation camps—landed itself in a PR disaster when it revealed it planned to kick holidaymakers out of its sites for the day on Monday. After a furious backlash, the company backtracked—somewhat—saying it would allow people already on vacation to stay, but anyone due to arrive on Monday has been told to delay their arrival until Tuesday, a move that invited more criticism. Mail Postal service and courier company Royal Mail—which was founded by Henry VIII in 1516 and claims to be one of the oldest organizations in the world—will suspend its services on the day of the Queen’s funeral. Chargers Vs. Chiefs Final Score Highlights: Kansas City Holds Off LA Injured Justin Herbert With Jaylen Watson Pick-Six Sporting News
Chargers Vs. Chiefs Final Score, Highlights: Kansas City Holds Off LA, Injured Justin Herbert With Jaylen Watson Pick-Six – Sporting News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/chargers-vs-chiefs-final-score-highlights-kansas-city-holds-off-la-injured-justin-herbert-with-jaylen-watson-pick-six-sporting-news/ If nothing else, the Amazon Prime’s “Thursday Night Football” debut was entertaining. In an AFC West showdown between Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert, the two delivered a riveting game that was decided by one crucial mistake between them. The Chiefs pulled out a 27-24 win over the Chargers, their first win over their division foe in the past three seasons. Although the Chargers got out to a 17-7 lead behind a methodical offense and an excellent showing from Mike Williams, the Chiefs came back to score 20 unanswered points to open up a 10-point lead, which the Chargers were unable to overcome. The defining moment of the game came at 17-17, when Herbert was picked off at the goal line by Jaylen Watson, which the rookie housed from 99 yards out. Herbert threw into coverage trying to find Gerald Everett, and Watson undercut him to make the biggest play of the game. MORE: NFL Week 1 overreactions Mahomes, however, was far from perfect. He made a few questionable throws, including two on one drive that could have (and arguably should have) been picked off by Asante Samuel Jr. The second one looked like the pick six Watson eventually got, and the Chiefs were able to get a field goal on the drive. Herbert, to his credit, battled injuries at the end of the game that created some truly head-scratching moments. After Chase Daniel had already taken a snap, Herbert scrambled on the Chargers’ last dive. With daylight ahead of him, he limply spiked the ball instead of running for the first down. On fourth-and-1, however, Herbert unleashed a rocket to DeAndre Carter, who hauled it in on the five. Eventually, the Chargers scored to Joshua Palmer in the back of the end zone to make it 27-24, but after failing to recover the ensuing onside kick the Chiefs killed the clock. Herbert completed 33 of his 48 passes for three touchdowns and an interception, whereas Mahomes went 24 of 35 for 245 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The interception ended up being the difference, but there were heartening signs. Williams looked like a legitimate No. 1 receiver, hauling in eight catches for 113 yards and making the absence of Keenan Allen more palatable. Mahomes lived up to his preseason promise to fantasy owners and spread the ball around for the second week in a row, hitting nine different receivers and targeting 10 over the course of the game. The leading receiver was Kelce at 51. It was a clean game overall, and the reality is in a clean game, one mistake can be the difference. That was the case for the Chargers Thursday.  The Sporting News tracked it all live. Chargers vs. Chiefs score   Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 F Chargers 3 7 7 7 24 Chiefs 0 7 7 13 27 Chargers vs. Chiefs updates, highlights from “Thursday Night Football” (All times Eastern) 11:14 p.m. — That’s ballgame. Chiefs hold on to win 27-24, as the Chargers lose a 10-point lead helped along by Jaylen Watson’s pick six. 11:12 p.m. — Although the Chiefs initially botched the inside kick, they fall on it and keep the ball. Kansas City should be able to kill the clock with just one timeout left for Los Angeles. 11:09 p.m. — On fourth down, instead of kicking the field goal and trying to make it a one-possession game, the Chargers go to the end zone for Joshua Palmer and score six on a nice look-off from Herbert. The Chargers keep it interesting. Chiefs 27, Chargers 24. Justin Herbert is unbelievable. @chargers cut the deficit to three! @Flowercitysown #TNFonPrime #LACvsKC on Prime Video Also available on NFL+ https://t.co/Fa02SqPmRn pic.twitter.com/mMob7e1uPc — NFL (@NFL) September 16, 2022 11:07 p.m. — And somehow, and fourth-and-1, he slings a dart to DeAndre Carter over the middle to convert the first. Crazy sequence there, really, and at the two-minute warning the Chargers will come out with first down from the Chiefs 5-yard line. Absolute dot from Justin Herbert. #TNFonPrime#LACvsKC on Prime Video Also available on NFL+ https://t.co/Fa02SqPmRn pic.twitter.com/Pdun2PO1TL — NFL (@NFL) September 16, 2022 11:05 p.m. — The Chargers running backs are a big part of the passing game now, as the first three plays of this drive go to them. On third-and-1, Herbert’s shoulder fails him and he spikes a ball into the dirt when he could have run for the first. 11:03 p.m. — Matt Ammendola hits another field goal to make it Chiefs 27, Chargers 17. Herbert is throwing on the sideline, but as Herbstreit points out, he doesn’t look fluid. 11:02 p.m. — The Chargers have now used two timeouts as the Chiefs trot out the field goal unit with 3:24 left. Good job by the defense, but that big Edwards-Helaire run looms large. 10:58 p.m. — Clyde Edwards-Helaire kicks this drive off with a massive run and he’s going to get 15 more tacked onto the end of it for a facemask. Great job hitting the hole from him, and Derwin James got inside the facemask. 52-yard run, 67 yards after the penalty, and it’s the Chiefs from the Charger 18. 10:56 p.m. — After his return, Herbert misses badly on two straight throws. The second one should have been picked off, as he locked in on Mike Williams and threw into triple coverage. Chargers punt, and the Chiefs will start from their own 15 with 3:55 left. 10:56 p.m. — Herbert is back. 10:55 p.m. — Herbert leaves the field and Chase Daniel comes in for first-and-10, but it looks like Herbert will be coming back. 10:51 p.m. — The Chargers have a chance to redeem themselves on another third-and-2 here, and Herbert makes a great throw under pressure to Gerald Everett. Herbert, however, goes down and he’s injured. Extremely scary moment here for the Chargers. 10:49 p.m. — The Chargers defense has been very good tonight. Asante Samuel forces an incompletion on Valdes-Scantling downfield, and the Chiefs punt down to the Chargers 15. Herbert is going to get another chance here, but time is a factor. 10:44 p.m. — After the punt, the Chiefs will get the ball back with 8:15 yet. They’ll look to control the clock down the stretch. 10:41 p.m. — Some of these Chargers playcalls are confusing. They go three-and-out in answer to the pick six, and they hand it off on third-and-2. Ekeler gets stacked up for a loss, and the Chargers have to punt. 10:36 p.m. — What a swing! The first turnover of the game is critical, as Jaylen Watson undercuts a throw from Herbert to Everett and houses it from 99 yards out. Clutch play by the rookie to give the Chiefs their first lead of the game, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Tremendous resilience from the Chiefs. Chiefs 24, Chargers 17. Go make a play, rook. @JaylenWatson12 | #ChiefsKingdom #LACvsKC on Prime Video Also available on NFL+ https://t.co/Fa02SqPmRn pic.twitter.com/DHE5O9EsNp — NFL (@NFL) September 16, 2022 10:34 p.m. — This Chargers team is fighting for every yard right now. First Carter tight-ropes down the sideline for a first down, then Everett avoids getting submarined and fights for a few extra yards to make it second-and-3.  10:31 p.m. — The Chargers pick up a first down and clear the 50 in the process. That personal foul is looming awfully large right now, and the Chargers are looking to reclaim the lead. 10:29 p.m. — Brutal play by Cook on the kickoff, as he catches a personal foul to give the Chargers the ball at their own 40 to open this drive. Equivalent to kicking the ball out of bounds. 10:28 p.m. — It’s a testament to how this game is going, but the Chiefs bring in Ammendola ot kick the chip shot and tie the game up. Boring choice, but with the pace of this game, perhaps the right one. Chargers 17, Chiefs 17. 10:26 p.m. — Frankly, it’s weird this wasn’t a flag. You aren’t generally allowed to make wrestling moves on defense. Derwin James just went WWE on Travis Kelce. Mercy. pic.twitter.com/a0w8YZ6xB8 — Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) September 16, 2022 10:24 p.m. — Mahomes put a one-read throw to the end zone on second down, but Asante Samuel jumps it and nearly picks it off. On third down, the Chiefs run a shovel pass and get down to the goal line to end the third quarter, and it’ll be fourth down on the other side. Big choice upcoming here for Reid and the Chiefs. 10:23 — ????. Mahomes completes a big pass to Kelce to get down to the Chargers 4-yard line, and Kelce gets body-slammed and the ball pops out. Kelce, of course, was down by contact, but that was brutal. 10:20 p.m. — After a first down incompletion, Asante Samuel Jr. forces third down by blowing up a swing pass. Chargers come out in a bunch set on third down, and Mahomes finds Hardman for a Chiefs first down. Good stick play by the Chiefs to convert. 10:18 p.m. — Skyy Moore takes a fair catch at the Chargers 35. Another golden opportunity for KC. 10:16 p.m. — Chiefs get pressure on the first two downs, and it’ll be third-and-10. Crowd noise is becoming a real factor now. On third down they get to him, as Chris Jones sacks Herbert, and the Chargers will punt from the shadow of their own goalpost. Huge possession for the Chiefs defense. 10:14 p.m. — Well, so much for that. The Chargers force a three-and-out in quick succession. The Chargers have dialed up some really well-timed blitzes tonight, and it’s left Mahomes frazzled at times. Chargers will get the ball at their own 9-yard line after the punt. 10:10 p.m. — Big turnaround here in this game, as now the Chargers go three-and-out and will punt it away to the Chiefs. Chiefs will look to take their first lead of the game, and they’ll start from their own 30. 10:05 p.m. — What an unbelievable third down play from the Chiefs. JC Jackson gets beat on an out-and-up from Justin Watson and gets in from 41 yards out. This Chiefs offense really needed that, and...
