Russian Sanctions Slow To Bite As US Officials Admit Frustrations Over Pace Of Pain In Moscow – CNN https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/russian-sanctions-slow-to-bite-as-us-officials-admit-frustrations-over-pace-of-pain-in-moscow-cnn/ Washington CNN  —  Senior US officials tell CNN they are disappointed US-led sanctions haven’t had a bigger impact so far on the Russian economy and are now predicting that the harshest effects probably won’t materialize until early next year at the earliest. The hope had been that the sanctions would quickly choke off Russia’s war machine in Ukraine, making it difficult for the Kremlin to sustain its efforts on the battlefield — and perhaps even turn public opinion against the invasion when day-to-day life in Russian society became uncomfortable. But the Russian economy has proven far more resilient than many top Biden administration officials had expected when they set out to punish the country in February, thanks largely to record-setting revenues it has reaped in the spring and summer from soaring energy prices. In the first 100 days of the war, Russia earned a record 93 billion euros in revenue by exporting oil, gas and coal, according to the Finnish Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air. Russia’s economy still shrunk by about 4% between April and June as compared to the same period last year. But that’s nowhere near the 15% decline that some had expected earlier in the year. “We were expecting that things like SWIFT and all the blocking sanctions on Russia’s banks would totally crater the Russian economy and that basically, by now going into September, we’d be dealing with an economically much more weakened Russia than the one that we are dealing with,” said one senior US official, referring to the US and European decision to cut some Russian banks off from the SWIFT international banking system. Another senior US official echoed that, telling CNN that many in the administration had hoped to see the Russian economy suffering more by now, given the unprecedented severity of the coordinated western sanctions. A separate senior administration official cautioned CNN, however, that the officials crafting the sanctions in the months leading up to the war always believed that the steepest impacts would not necessarily be immediate. “I think we’ve had, from the beginning, a view that when Russia invaded Ukraine and we imposed the sanctions, they were going to be, in all likelihood, a mid-to-long term sanctions regime,” the official said. “That is because we wanted to keep pressure on Russia over the long term as it waged war on Ukraine, and we wanted to degrade Russia’s economic and industrial capabilities. So we’ve always seen this as a long term game.” The official acknowledged that while there were some “up-front shocks” to the Russian economy, like when the ruble plunged, Russia was able to rally quickly thanks to its energy revenues. Still, this official and western intelligence officials told CNN that they assess that in the long-term, Russia’s economy will suffer enormously — both from the cost of the war itself and from western efforts to cut it off from global trade. “There’s going to be long-term damage done to the Russian economy and to generations of Russians as a result of this,” CIA Director Bill Burns told a cybersecurity conference last week. “Russia is going to pay a very heavy price, I think, over a long period of time.” The disconnect between early expectations and reality appears to stem from the fact that many US and western officials underestimated the sky-high revenues Russia would initially reap from rising oil prices, and the willingness of countries like China and India to continue buying Russian oil. And despite being one of the largest oil producers in the world, Saudi Arabia has also begun buying Russian crude — albeit at a discount — for use in its power plants, freeing up its own oil to sell to other countries, an administration official confirmed to CNN. “The United States underestimated it, and we were slow in actually starting to think about deploying sanctions against Russia energy interests,” said Jason Blazakis, a sanctions expert who served as the State Department’s Director of the Counterterrorism Finance and Designations Office from 2008-2018. “I think they made that calculation that these sanctions would have heat and hurt the Russian economy very quickly, in ways they clearly misunderstood and overestimated,” Blazakis said. “The sanctions certainly have made the Russian economy smaller, but not to the extent people had hoped. And certainly not to the point where the Russians were brought to the bargaining table.” When Russia invaded Ukraine in February, Europe’s continued dependence on Russian oil and gas imports meant the west was unwilling to immediately sanction Russian energy interests. The US sanctioned executives from major Russian banks, like Gazprombank, but waived sanctions on the bank itself and allowed energy payments to the Russians to continue. “We had been warning Europe for years before the invasion about the need to get away from Russian energy, and they just weren’t willing to do it until it was too late,” said one of the senior US officials. Russia has now weaponized its gas supplies, shutting off flows through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline — and Europe is bracing for a potential recession as a result of the energy crisis. As one response to the energy revenues problem, the European Union agreed over the summer to ban all imports of Russian crude coming in by sea. US officials — concerned that such a ban could cause oil prices to skyrocket even more and bolster Russian revenue for the supplies it does continue to sell — have lobbied for the imposition of a cap on the price of Russian oil. The EU agreed to a cap in principle earlier this month, but it is still unclear how the measure will be enforced. Despite those concerns, US and European officials seem to broadly agree that the boon to the Russian economy stemming from high oil prices is not sustainable in the medium-to-long term, and that the Russian economy could start feeling the worst effects of the sanctions in the first half of 2023. Some believe the downturn could come sooner, by the end of this year. Export controls have also largely choked off Russia’s ability to manufacture new technology and weapons, and Russia has recently turned to Iran and North Korea for equipment like drones and ammunition. “We expected the decline might be a little harsher, but they’re masking it,” said a source familiar with western intelligence, explaining that western officials believe the Russians are manipulating statistics and being “held up for now” by high energy prices. “They can hold on and maintain current government spending levels for probably the next two years,” the source added. “They’ll be running a deficit. But it’s really going to hit society towards the end of the year when it’s not possible to pay people working for companies that have shut down and don’t have stockpiled reserves.” Another European official echoed that sentiment, telling CNN that intelligence suggests that Russian officials are concerned about how they will sustain the labor market as companies begin going bankrupt. “This is we always thought that there would be an upfront shock to the Russian economy, Russia would then work to mitigate that, but then there would then be these ongoing drags on the economy and on industrial production, which we are now very much seeing,” the senior administration official told CNN. “I think with the price cap, we have a very effective path forward to address, you know, the one area where they were kind of able to get some excess benefit because of the higher oil prices,” the official added. Putin spent years amassing hundreds of billions in foreign currency reserves, and Russia’s Central Bank has benefited from a talented central banker who has managed to implement workarounds to keep the ruble afloat, officials say. But all that is doing is creating the appearance of stability, officials said, as western sanctions degrade key sectors of Russia’s economy — particularly the technological sector — and GDP continues to shrink. Much of the money Russia holds in foreign banks, moreover, has been frozen since Russia’s invasion. “There is an argument out there that says sanctions failed because they are making cash from oil,” said one senior administration official. “But they’re making a lot less than they would have a year ago, and Russian oil now makes up nearly the entirety of the Russian economy because of the sanctions imposed already on the other sectors, which are working.” The European official agreed. “The main thing that has kept Putin’s regime floating is the high oil price,” the official said. “Everything else is freezing or frozen already.” As time goes on, Russian oil production will also decline, the US official predicted, largely because of increased foreign divestiture. Foreign companies have for decades helped maintain Russian oil fields and keep the energy sector efficient — something that Russian companies will struggle to replicate, the US believes. Russia may turn to China for additional economic assistance in counteracting sanctions. Putin met with his counterpart, President Xi Jinping, at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Uzbekistan this week. But although China has made legal purchases and offered rhetorical support for Russia, it has so far done nothing to run afoul of western sanctions. And there is no evidence that it is covertly providing any kind of direct assistance to Russia’s war efforts. There are also practical limits to the short-term assistance China can provide. The natural gas pipelines to Asia “can’t carry nearly the volume” needed to make up for cutting off sales to Europe for another five years, according to the source familiar with western intelligence. US and western officials hav...

Razer Blade 15 Review: One Click Makes This Sublime Gaming Laptop Even Faster – PCWorld https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/razer-blade-15-review-one-click-makes-this-sublime-gaming-laptop-even-faster-pcworld/ At a glance Expert’s Rating Pros Exceptionally sturdy and robust Beautiful and responsive display with very accurate color and crisp detail Excellent connectivity Cons You will need to switch to Boost Mode to see frame rates like some rivals Styling is not as suitable for the office as it is for gaming The display lacks brightness for use outdoors Our Verdict The Razer Blade 15 is sturdy and attractive and benefits from a spate of hardware upgrades that will undoubtedly impress most gamers. While gaming performance in Default Mode is still excellent, the laptop truly shines once you boost the GPU. Price When Reviewed $2,999 base | $3,699 as tested Best Prices Today: Razer Blade 15 $3,676.93 Free $3699.99 The 2022 Razer Blade 15 continues to occupy a desirable niche among gaming laptops, providing the kind of sturdiness and high-end visuals you’re more likely to see in a desktop computer, but in a compact and highly portable unit. What’s more, it feels premium and polished in every way, benefiting from years of Razer fine-tuning an exceptional feature list. Once again, the Blade 15 sports excellent hardware upgrades, no less than a brand new 12th-generation Alder Lake Intel CPU that ensures it continues to be a powerful force among gaming laptops. Although a decent performer in Default Mode, it’s exceptionally powerful in Boost Mode – which only takes a simple click of the mouse to change to. Razer Blade 15 specifications The Razer Blade 15 comes in CPU configurations up to Core i9-12900H and with select Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 Series GPUs, the most powerful being the RTX 3080 Ti which we were lucky enough to have in our review unit. Three display types are available, including FHD, QHD or 4K options with varying refresh rates. The specification of our review unit is as follows: CPU: Intel Core i7-12800H RAM: 32GB DDR5/4800 MHz GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Display: 15.6-inch QHD (2560×1440), non-touch, 240 Hz refresh rate, G-sync Storage: 1TB SSD PCle Gen4 Ports: 2 x USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 (supports power delivery), 3 x USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C), HDMI 2.1 output, SD card reader, 3.5mm combo port Networking: Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2 Dimensions: 0.67 x 9.25 x 13.98 inches Weight: 4.4 lbs (2.01 kg) Color: Matte black Battery capacity: 80WHr Price: $3,699.99 Razer Blade 15 design and build Finding familiarity in a laptop’s design is a blessing when it comes time to upgrade, granted that there’s always the possibility that choosing something entirely new could land you with an expensive device that doesn’t fit the bill. The Razer Blade 15, however, is a safer bet, eliciting plenty of buyer’s confidence with its familiar chassis that’s been honed to near perfection with successive Blade 15 releases. At 0.67 x 9.25 x 13.98 inches, it’s identical in size (and shape) to the late 2021 Blade 15, which means it retains its smaller size advantage over 15-inch gaming laptops like the 14.16-inch wide Alienware x15 R2. At a little over four pounds, it weighs exactly the same as its predecessor – qualifying it as equally light enough to carry in a medium to large satchel – although it should be stated, it’s still comparably heftier to cart around than the current lineup of 14-inch gaming laptops like the Razer Blade 14 (3.92 lbs) and the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (3.64 lbs). The new Blade 15 is just as sturdy as its predecessors as well. Milled from a single block of CNC-aluminum, it feels incredibly solid all over, from the base to the outermost corners of the lid. In fact, my review model proved virtually immovable to my prodding. The hinges too were so tight they could hold the lid open an impressive half inch from the base. A smattering of legacy features return to grant the Blade 15 a polished top-end appeal. Two that stand out are its 4.9 mm thin display bezels and anodized matte-black scratch resistant coating. These seem like old friends we’ve seen before in recent Razer reviews and they undoubtedly add to the premium feel. The styling is also mostly unchanged from last year. The fluorescent Razer snake logo taking center stage on the notebook’s top lid is predictably very bold and green. Some gamers may still prefer the more muted styling of the Razer Blade Stealth, whose two-toned logo is a little more office friendly. Still, its look remains slick and since it’s a laptop meant for high-end gamers, there’s really nothing wrong with showing that off. The 2022 Razer Blade 15 sports the same iconic Razer logo on its top lid as last year’s release.  Dominic Bayley / IDG Inherited features aside, minor changes to last year’s model make the Blade 15 a little easier to use. First and most notably is a new position for the power button. It’s been moved from inside the top right-hand side speaker grille to now sit in the top right of the keyboard next to the “del” key, so it’s a lot easier to spot. It’s also now fully sized, so less fiddly. The speaker grilles have also been modified. They now appear as laser cut perforations in the upper casing, rather than speaker-like material embedded into the casing as they were previously. It’s a cleaner and more cohesive look, but it also allows for a more spacious keyboard than last year’s model – a win win for users. Keyboard and trackpad The Blade 15’s backlit keyboard is powered by Razer’s Chroma RGB lighting system, which gives you access to 16.8 million colors and plenty of effects in the Razer Synapse app. It supports per-key illumination for color mapping commands, a feature which we usually only find in the most high-end gaming notebooks, although Razer has also made it a standard feature of the base model Blade 15 this year. To be sure, the backlighting is the keyboard’s star attraction, beaming color in front of you like a Fourth of July celebration. That’s not to say the keyboard isn’t impressive in other ways, too. It’s both spacious and responsive and the keys are highly comfortable. The Razer Blade 15’s Razer Chroma Backlit keyboard.  Dominic Bayley / IDG The latter have a low profile, but they bounce back quickly, feeling noticeably less mushy than in some rivals. Surprisingly, they’re also whisper quiet, which may not suit gamers craving the more desktop-like mechanical keyboard experience, but that’s a rarity among gaming notebooks anyway. As to the layout, it’s fairly typical for a 15-inch laptop. It includes F1 to F12 keys and left and right ‘shift,’ ‘ctrl’ and ‘fn’ keys. There’s no numpad, but you won’t miss it much, since there’s everything else you need, including up and down arrow keys and generously proportioned letter keys for decent typing accuracy. Once again, Razer has included a Microsoft Precision Glass trackpad, which is both large and very smooth. In both our reviews of the Razer Blade 17 and Razer Blade 14, we found it one of the quickest we’ve used to date and it’s no different in the Blade 15, allowing your fingers to slide over it with minimal contact as if they were sliding over a freshly cleaned windowpane. Display The Blade 15 comes in multiple display options ranging from a top-end 4K with 144 Hz refresh rate to a Full HD option with 360 Hz refresh rate. Our review unit’s QHD (2560 x 1440-pixel) display with 240 Hz refresh rate hits a comfortable middle ground between those two, delivering images in fine detail but with the kind of responsiveness you’d expect in a premium laptop. Testing the display for detail and color balance in Sniper Elite 5, the IPS-grade 100 percent DCI-P3 color panel looked incredibly sharp and had no trouble rendering difficult shapes like rounded objects with precision. Its color reproduction was also spot on – reds looked true instead of appearing orange in hue, while whites didn’t have the blue tinge I sometimes see in some inferior panels – both positive results for gamers and creative professionals alike. Sniper Elite 5 screenshot taken on the Razer Blade 15. Dominic Bayley / IDG Running an EIZO Monitor test confirmed these results and also provided me with some insight into how well the panel rendered patterns and color gradients. Here, the frequency patterns the Razer produced showed up lines that were clear and defined, even when rendered very small. Color gradients were also free of obvious breaks or bonding, further proving the panel’s worthiness for producing highly detailed text and images. The EIZO test for the Razer Blade 15’s display. Dominic Bayley / IDG With G-Sync technology switched on, screen tearing all but disappears keeping the videos and animations rolling smoothly. This is a useful addition that makes the display just a little more polished. Although, a small nitpick is that it could have been a tad brighter. My review unit mustered a peak brightness level of 315 nits as measured by my LUX meter, which was enough to provide decent contrast indoors. Outside though, it was a different story, the display appearing a little washed out when glare made it harder to see. A lesser qualm is that the panel’s 16:9 ratio remains unchanged. While this didn’t have any impact on my gaming, a taller 16:10 display would have been useful for comparing my Excel spreadsheets, thereby adding to the Blade 15’s versatility as a productivity machine. Still, I liked how the ultra-thin bezels nicely minimized distraction. Webcam and audio With more gamers choosing to stream ‘let’s plays’ or upload videos onto social media it’s not surprising that some manufacturers have opted for FHD 1080p webcams over HD 720p ones. Razer is one, the Blade 15’s higher resolution camera providing a welcome boost in image clarity and brightness in my group chats, like in Microsoft Teams. The webcam’s Windows Hello compatibility also made it super convenient to log on e...

Georgetowns Decatur House Lists For $7.9 Million The Washington Post
Georgetown’s Decatur House Lists For $7.9 Million – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/georgetowns-decatur-house-lists-for-7-9-million-the-washington-post/ Georgetown’s Decatur house — not to be confused with the Decatur House on Lafayette Square, which is home to the White House Historical Association — is on the market for $7.9 million. Some date the Federal-style house on N Street NW to 1779. The D.C. Historical Building Permits database puts it at 1813. The architect is unknown. The earliest known owner was James Sewall Morsell, a judge of the U.S. Circuit Court of the District of Columbia. Before he was appointed to the court in 1815, Morsell was a lawyer in private practice in Georgetown. He represented a number of enslaved families that petitioned the U.S. Circuit Court for their freedom. It is on the market for $7.9 million. (HomeVisit) The six-bedroom, seven-bathroom, 7,400-square-foot house takes its name from Susan Decatur. She was the widow of Commodore Stephen Decatur Jr. The Decaturs moved to Washington in 1816, bought land near the White House and built the first and last private residence on Lafayette Square. They lived there only 14 months before Stephen was killed in a duel. After his death, Susan is said to have moved to this house in Georgetown. Deering Davis, Stephen P. Dorsey and Ralph Cole Hall, who wrote the book “Georgetown Houses of the Federal Period 1780-1830,” are skeptical of the story. “This house has persistently been associated with the name of Decatur, although no authentic sources for the legend are known,” they wrote. “It is said to have been erected in 1779 and is known to have been the home of Judge Morsell at one time. According to legend, Mrs. Susan Wheeler Decatur came here to live after the death of the Commodore in his duel with Captain James Barron at Bladensburgh [sic] March 22, 1820.” Davis, Dorsey and Hall were much more complimentary of the house’s architecture, writing that it is “well known for its fine doorway.” In the past 90 years, the house has been sold only twice. In 1932, Franklin Mott Gunther and his wife, Louisa Bronson Hunnewell Gunther, became its owners. Franklin was the last American minister to Romania before diplomatic relations were severed in World War II. He died in Bucharest of an illness in 1941, 10 days after Romania, allied with Germany, declared war on the United States. His diplomatic postings included Nicaragua, Portugal, Brazil, Norway, Holland, Italy, Egypt and Ecuador. Because the Gunthers were often abroad, they frequently rented the house to tenants. Stanley Woodward, assistant chief of protocol at the State Department, lived in the house in 1937. He was followed by John Wesley Hanes, who had left the Securities and Exchange Commission to become an undersecretary in the Treasury Department. Rodman Wanamaker II, heir to the Wanamaker department store fortune, moved into the house in 1940, and Hanes. J. Averell Clark, a World War II fighter pilot, lived there in 1943. The Countess de Martino rented the house in 1945. Born Asta Berwind von Kleist, the countess was the daughter of Baron and Baroness Frederick von Kleist. She had come to the United States in 1941, and she served as a volunteer ambulance driver with the American Field Service in World War II. After her husband died, Louisa Gunther returned to live in the house. In 1963, she married Mihail Farcasanu, a Romanian exile and the former editor in chief of Viitorul, a Romanian periodical. Following her death in 1974, Farcasanu remained in the house until 1987. The next owners were Frederick H. Prince IV and his wife, Diana C. Prince. Frederick, who died in 2017, was co-trustee of the Frederick Henry Prince 1932 Trust, chairman of CMD Corp. and co-managing partner of F.H. Prince & Co. He was a member of the Orange County Hunt and a founder of Prince’s Court in McLean, Va., which is said to be the first court tennis court to be built in the United States in 74 years. The entrance to the house is reached by a small set of stairs leading up from the brick sidewalk. The entry door is framed by a fan light and sidelights. A library with a wood-burning fireplace is to the right of the center hall. The ceilings on the main level are 12½ feet tall. The 21-by-34-foot living room spans the back of the house. Four sets of French doors open to a porch. There is a wood-burning fireplace at each end of the room. The 17-by-29-foot dining room has a wood-burning fireplace and two triple-sash windows. The kitchen is on the lower level. A family room, a wine cellar and a bedroom with en suite bathroom are also on this floor. The owner’s suite is on the second floor. The bedroom has doors that open to a balcony. The bedroom and the dressing room each have a fireplace. This floor also has two additional bedrooms and bathrooms. The top level has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. An elevator runs to three of the four floors, but not the top level. A brick path in the gardens leads to a large, circular fountain. Off-street parking for two cars is a half a block away. Opinion: What Is House Bill 135. How Would It Help Sickle Cell Patients – The Columbus Dispatch https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/opinion-what-is-house-bill-135-how-would-it-help-sickle-cell-patients-the-columbus-dispatch/ “For many patients, medicine would be unobtainable without assistance from third parties such as charities, churches, and drug manufacturer assistance programs,” Annie J. Ross-Womack Annie J. Ross-Womack  |  Guest columnist Annie J. Ross-Womack is the executive director of the Ohio Sickle Cell and Health Association. September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Sickle cell disease is an inherited, rare, painful, and debilitating condition that affects thousands of Ohioans. In 2018, the Ohio legislature launched a statewide network of sickle cell programs to help Ohioans detect, manage and live better lives with the disease. These programs support a rigorous newborn testing program, counseling and education services, and care coordination across the state. Ohio lawmakers may soon pass a law that can further assist people living with sickle cell disease and others living with chronic and life-threatening diseases. More:Sickle cell patient becomes vocal advocate for importance of blood donations Sickle cell disease affects millions of people worldwide – about 100,000 in the United States. Sickle cell disease is particularly common among those whose ancestors came from sub-Saharan Africa; Spanish-speaking regions in the Western Hemisphere (South America, the Caribbean, and Central America); Saudi Arabia; India; and Mediterranean countries such as Turkey, Greece, and Italy. There are several types of sickle cell disease. The specific type of sickle cell disease a person has depends on the genes inherited from their parents. People with sickle cell disease inherit genes that contain instructions, or code, for abnormal hemoglobin. More:Sickle cell children are living longer than ever, but as adults they face challenges to get basic care As a result, red blood cells cannot adequately deliver oxygen to the body’s organs, tissues, and bones. When this happens, people living with sickle cell disease experience crippling pain. As they age, serious complications occur to the brain, heart, lungs, and other vital organs. Currently, there is no cure for sickle cell disease. Most treatments are centered around easing pain episodes and preventing complications and unseen damage to the body. Treatments include medication and blood transfusions and sometimes go as far as a stem cell transplant. There are some cutting-edge gene therapy treatments underway as well. More:How to submit guest opinion columns to the Columbus Dispatch Medications to manage rare and chronic illnesses such as sickle cell and related diseases are often expensive. People with high-deductible health plans must pay higher copays and coinsurance costs. Their medications are likely on specialty-tier formularies, which drives up these out-of-pocket costs. Columbus resident Habiba Bankston is one of thousands of Ohioans who live with sickle cell disease. As an adult, she has made the transition from pediatric sickle cell disease care to adult sickle cell disease care. Transition services from childhood to adult treatment is a critical time for all people living with sickle cell disease. Bankston, like other adults with sickle cell disease, receives some care from Nationwide Children’s Hospital in addition to services at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Thanks to healthy living, blood transfusions, and adherence to medicines, Bankston is living strong with sickle cell disease. For many patients, medicine would be unobtainable without assistance from third parties such as charities, churches, and drug manufacturer assistance programs. Unfortunately, health insurance companies have created policies commonly referred to as copay accumulators, which deny copay assistance from being applied to a cost-sharing requirement. The irony is that insurers refuse to apply financial assistance to the patient’s cost-sharing; they ultimately get paid twice by taking the monetary value of the copay assistance and the patient’s deductible obligation. More:Sickle cell children are living longer than ever, but as adults they face challenges to get basic care In addition, insurers use industry middlemen called pharmacy benefit managers to craft and utilize policies that shift the cost of the patient’s medication from the insurance company back onto the patient. Currently, nine out of 10 healthcare plans in Ohio have copay accumulator adjuster policies. The Ohio legislature is taking action to help patients with chronic and life-threatening diseases. The Ohio House, by unanimous vote, recently approved House Bill 135, which would address copay accumulator policies. House Bill 135 will help Ohio families reduce out-of-pocket costs by allowing the payments from third-party copay assistance programs or other financial assistance programs to count toward their deductible and coinsurance. Ohioans living with complex conditions such as sickle cell disease, multiple sclerosis, HIV/AIDS, and cancer are just some people whom this legislation will help. As House Bill 135 waits to be heard in the Ohio Senate, it is critical that policymakers understand that the bill does not force insurers to cover new benefits nor interrupt the use of generic medications or steer patients to more expensive medications. More:From debilitating illness to a ‘normal’ life, new gene therapy treatment promises to transform rare disease This bill does not increase premiums; so far, 14 states have banned copay accumulators, and more than 20 states are working on legislation. Data shows premiums have not increased in the first states where bans were implemented. People living with sickle cell disease appreciate that the Ohio Department of Health and state legislators support our community’s care, education, counseling, and newborn screenings. We urge the members of the Ohio Senate to pass House Bill 135 to continue to support those Ohioans dealing with chronic illness. Annie J. Ross-Womack is the executive director of the Ohio Sickle Cell and Health Association. September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month.

Here Is The Latest Pac-12 Conference Sports News From The Associated Press – Corsicana Daily Sun https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/here-is-the-latest-pac-12-conference-sports-news-from-the-associated-press-corsicana-daily-sun-3/ BOSTON (AP) — A federal judge has ordered a new trial for a former decorated University of Southern California water polo coach convicted in the sprawling college admissions bribery scandal. In throwing out Jovan Vavic’s fraud and bribery conviction, U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani found some evidence introduced by the government to be unreliable and that prosecutors erred in their argument to jurors about some of the alleged bribe money. Vavic was convicted in April after being arrested in March 2019 in the headline-grabbing “Operation Varsity Blues” investigation. He had guided USC’s men’s and women’s water polo teams to 16 national championships. UNDATED (AP) — The 25th-ranked Oregon Ducks play their second ranked opponent of the season when No. 12 Brigham Young makes its first trip to Autzen Stadium since 1990 on Saturday. Oregon has won 29 straight nonconference home games, the second-longest active streak in FBS, including seven against ranked teams. Bo Nix had five touchdown passes against Eastern Washington last week after throwing two interceptions in the opener vs. Georgia. BYU won all five games against Pac-12 teams last season, including two against ranked teams. Jaren Hall is 7-1 as a starting quarterback against ranked teams. UNDATED (AP) — BYU’s double-overtime victory over Baylor moved the Cougars up nine spots to No. 12 in the AP Top 25 and gave the team a boost nationally in its final year as an FBS independent. But the attention quickly shifted to Saturday’s game at Oregon, and the latest opportunity to make BYU’s season special. The Ducks are coming off a 70-14 win at home over Eastern Washington. The rout helped Oregon move on from its disappointing season-opening loss to Georgia and popped the Ducks back into the rankings at No. 25. LOS ANGELES (AP) — No. 7 Southern California’s roaring start under Lincoln Riley has caught the college football world’s attention and driven the Trojans to their highest ranking in five years. Fresno State is exactly the type of opponent that could put the brakes on all the excitement around a rebuilding project that’s humming along smoothly. Caleb Williams looks to remain unbeaten on the West Coast when the quarterback leads USC back to the Coliseum to face coach Jeff Tedford, quarterback Jake Haener and the Bulldogs, who came agonizingly close to an upset of Oregon State. SEATTLE (AP) — No. 11 Michigan State and Washington have looked great for the first two weeks of the season against lesser competition. Now both teams seek validation when the Huskies host the Spartans on Saturday. Michigan State beat up on Akron and Western Michigan to open the season. Washington thumped Kent State and Portland State. A win for Washington would be big in coach Kalen DeBoer’s first season in charge. A win for the Spartans would be just as significant in proving they are worthy of their high ranking. UNDATED (AP) — No. 14 Utah found its quarterback in Cameron Rising a year ago in a three-overtime loss against San Diego State when he came off the bench to spark the Utes. Rising has gone 10-3 as a starter since taking over. He went on to guide the Utes to a Pac-12 title and a spot in the Rose Bowl. The Utes enter this year’s game against the Aztecs at Rice-Eccles Stadium as a 20 1/2-point favorite. The Utes are chasing after win No. 300 against Mountain West teams. Utah was a member of the  league before joining the Pac-12 in 2011. UNDATED (AP) — Marcus Freeman has lost his first three games since taking over as Notre Dame’s coach. His fourth chance comes Saturday when the Fighting Irish host unbeaten California. It’s the first time the teams have met since 1967. The biggest problem for Notre Dame has been a stagnant offense. The Irish rank No. 117 out of 131 FBS teams in scoring offense and total offense. And this week they’ll have a new quarterback running the show as Drew Pyne replaces the injured Tyler Buchner. UNDATED (AP) — Oregon State plays Montana State on Saturday at Portland’s Providence Park. The Beavers haven’t played in Portland since 1986, when they faced UCLA. Oregon State is 2-0 for the first time since 2014, coming off wins over Boise State and Fresno State. Montana State is coming off a 63-13 victory over Morehead State in Bozeman. The Bobcats beat current Pac-12 member Colorado 19-10 back in 2006. That was Montana State’s last victory over an FBS team. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. AvataGo’s Metaverse AR Environment Will Be Your Eternal Friend – Digital Journal https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/avatagos-metaverse-ar-environment-will-be-your-eternal-friend-digital-journal/ Metaverse, AR, AI, Avatar, Blockchain, Web3.0, and NFT These are just a list of words that are hardly heard and don’t understand to me. What do these things have to do with me? Then, do any of the following relate to you? If you have a pet that doesn’t die, If you have a pet that is always acting cute to my old friends, If you have a friend who reads a book with a sweet voice next to you before sleeping, If time with close friends becomes money, If there is a place that easily sells what I made, If I could sell my experience, If there is a place where people of all ages can work, If everything you work and play becomes a source of royalty income, Are these things related to me? Or is it the world that I have to look for with interest? AvataGo is going to provide this world to anyone in the metaverse AR environment. The metaverse market, naturally created by COVID-19, has already approached 10 to 20 years earlier. The metaverse market is expected to grow from $148.5 billion in 2021 to $1.54 trillion in 2030. This is more than 10 times the growth rate. Web3.0 and NFT markets, which have added ownership concepts due to blockchain technology, are also expected to achieve rapid growth. Along with the metaverse market, AI technology is also remarkable. AlphaGo’s victory over Lee Se-dol in Go shocked the technology of artificial intelligence, and It was the moment to confirm the possibility and maturity of AI technology. We can easily meet the metaverse world around us. Roblox is growing explosively with the concept of C2E (Create to Earn), where consumers can also create and earn money from P2E (Play to Earn) where consumers can make money while having fun. The same goes for ZEPETO. Avatar is evolving. Up to now, avatars that represent me are the mainstream in the metaverse VR environment. In the future, AI avatars will become another mainstream, like new independent creatures in an AR environment where virtual and reality are mixed. Here’s a company called AvataGo which is creating avatars of the future. In conclusion, AvataGo is a platform company that offers solutions for the PET, friends, money, and royalty of the future mentioned above. Recently, the AvataGo token, which will be operated in the ecosystem, has been issued, and token can be verified in bscscan. The concept of AvataGo is to create new life and successfully nurture it in various environments, just as Prometheus in Greek mythology gave new life to humans. According to the Whitepaper on the homepage (https://avatago.com), Playground is a place where humans and AI Avatar share experiences in time and events for growth. The Asset Store is where NFT purchases, sales, and economic activities take place. IoT is a place where AI Avatar can grow while enjoying various events including performances. You can even earn royalties through self-satisfaction, trial and error, and all necessary economic activities in the process of growing a new life. The concept of AvataGo’s P2E (Play to Earn) and C2E (Create to Earn), as well as the royalty income, and the creation of new life forms, are of interest to the reader. The change to the metaverse created a huge growth for Roblox and ZEPETO. AvataGo is talking about PET and friends forever with humanity. As AvataGo hopes, in the new world of the metaverse, I hope that everyone will not be left behind and it will develop in a direction that is beneficial to mankind. Brittany Paz, an attorney who serves as a representative for Free Speech Systems, the company that runs Infowars, testified in a Connecticut civil defamation trial against Jones. The trial was initiated by the parents of the victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Jones and his media outlet have called the tragedy “a hoax” orchestrated by the American government.  The solicited crypto donations go “directly to Alex Jones personally,” Paz said of the crypto donations solicited during the show, as reported by The Independent. “He doesn’t tell anybody where it goes or what he does with it”. The attorney says that, since 2012, “there has been an increase in viewership” of Jones’s show which is also broadcast online. Last month, in a similar trial held in Texas, Jones was ordered to pay some $49.3m in punitive and compensatory damages for his fake hoax claim to the parents of a child killed in the shooting. To protect itself and its owner from financial losses, Free Speech Systems filed for bankruptcy protections in the first week of the first trial. An economist hired by the Texas parents who sued Jones testified that the company’s owner, his media brand and parent company are worth up to $270m, according to data obtained by British broadcaster BBC. The Infowars website encourages the conspiracy theorist’s followers to “sponsor” the media brand “with bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies”.

UK To Host Public Reading Of US Constitution For Constitution Day – UKNow https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/uk-to-host-public-reading-of-us-constitution-for-constitution-day-uknow/ iStock/Getty Images Plus: Creativeye99. LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 16, 2022) — Tomorrow is Constitution Day — the American federal observance that recognizes the adoption of the United States Constitution and those who have become U.S. citizens. It is observed on Sept. 17, the day in 1787 that delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the document in Philadelphia. The University of Kentucky J. David Rosenberg College of Law has been celebrating Constitution Day with a series of events this week, and the college will host a public reading of the entirety of the Constitution beginning noon today (Friday), Sept. 16. The reading will take place in the Stites & Harbison PLLC Commons, located on the second floor of the law building. UK Rosenberg Law faculty and staff will take turns reading. On Tuesday, Joshua Douglas, the Ashland, Inc.- Spears Distinguished Research Professor of Law, spoke to students about voting rights laws in an event co-hosted by the Law Library and UK Student Government Association. Douglas gave an overview of the Voting Rights Act and took questions related to voter identification laws and the electoral college. Second-year law student Bailey Pierce moderated the event. Participants received a pocket copy of the U.S. Constitution at the event. On Thursday, Jonathan Shaub, UK assistant professor of law, also spoke to students on the amendment process and the status of the Equal Rights Amendment. Additionally, students have been taking part in Constitution trivia in the law library throughout the week. Learn more about Constitution Day at www.archives.gov/news/topics/constitution-day. The University of Kentucky is increasingly the first choice for students, faculty and staff to pursue their passions and their professional goals. In the last two years, Forbes has named UK among the best employers for diversity, and INSIGHT into Diversity recognized us as a Diversity Champion four years running. UK is ranked among the top 30 campuses in the nation for LGBTQ* inclusion and safety. UK has been judged a “Great College to Work for” three years in a row, and UK is among only 22 universities in the country on Forbes’ list of “America’s Best Employers.”  We are ranked among the top 10 percent of public institutions for research expenditures — a tangible symbol of our breadth and depth as a university focused on discovery that changes lives and communities. And our patients know and appreciate the fact that UK HealthCare has been named the state’s top hospital for five straight years. Accolades and honors are great. But they are more important for what they represent: the idea that creating a community of belonging and commitment to excellence is how we honor our mission to be not simply the University of Kentucky, but the University for Kentucky.

Spielworks Enters Into Partnership With 4 Popular NFT Games – European Gaming Industry News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/spielworks-enters-into-partnership-with-4-popular-nft-games-european-gaming-industry-news/ Reading Time: 2 minutes The Torque Squad, part of the Motorverse Corporation and subsidiary of Animoca Brands, went to MotoGP for the first time as it revved up for the MotoGP Monster Energy British Grand Prix. Brad Binder, MotoGP rider and Torque Squad Ambassador, took to the stage at Silverstone. A tough Qualifying saw the 26-year-old sitting 0.176 seconds off Q2, but the Torqies cheered Binder from P14 on the grid to a P11 finish. The South African currently sits seventh in the standings, with one podium under his belt, as the MotoGP riders prepare to take on tracks in Austria and Italy before heading to Spain for the MotoGP Gran Premio de Aragón, where Animoca Brands will star as title sponsor. This marks the latest step for Torque Squad and Animoca Brands as they build on a growing partnership with MotoGP, with Animoca Brands also serving the role of title sponsor at the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix in October. The Torqies at Silverstone secured their VIP experience at the MotoGP Monster Energy British Grand Prix via both REVV Motorsport Discord and Torque Squad Discord. As well as meeting Brad Binder, the lucky winners also came face-to-face with three-time MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo as part of a special experience that featured meet & greets, paddock tours, pit lane walks, bike simulators and more. The event also followed news that Torque Squad had partnered with Lorenzo as part of the Spaniard’s involvement with X-Fuera. Matt Solomon, Motorverse Co-Founder and CEO, said: “It was great to see so many Torqies at Silverstone for MotoGP. The event marked our first collaboration with the series and it was a huge success. “We were delighted that our Torqies got to experience the full VIP package at Silverstone and we look forward to our next event!” Earlier this year Motorverse Corporation announced the launch of Torque Squad – a collection of 8,888 racing avatars NFTs called “Torqies”. Torqie NFTs are generated with individually styled details and intricate hand-drawn artwork to delight motorsport enthusiasts. These Torqies will act as the entry point to the Motorverse ecosystem. Partnered with the REVV Motorsport ecosystem, the Motorverse will support various REVV ecosystem NFTs in some of the upcoming Motorverse experiences. These experiences include both the real and virtual worlds of motorsport, with Torque Squad NFTs offering true utility across multiple areas. Next up for the Torqies will be the Phillip Island Circuit in Australia, where Binder and the rest of the MotoGP grid will battle it out as the season nears its end. Alongside Binder, Torque Squad project has partnered with numerous other top racers from across the world of motorsport, including Juan Pablo Montoya and his son Sebastian, Joey Logano and Rene Rast.

Here Is The Latest SEC Sports News From The Associated Press – WDRB https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/here-is-the-latest-sec-sports-news-from-the-associated-press-wdrb/ UNDATED (AP) — New No. 1 team Georgia opens Southeastern Conference play against South Carolina. Quarterback Stetson Bennett and the defending national champions have been dominant so far. They’ve outscored Oregon and Samford by a combined 82-3. The Gamecocks are led by Oklahoma transfer Spencer Rattler. They’re coming off a loss to No. 10 Arkansas. South Carolina’s challenge got even bigger with the season-ending ACL injuries to linebackers Jordan Strachan and Mo Kaba. In another big SEC game, 24th-ranked Texas A&M tries to rebound against No. 13 Miami. COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina coach Shane Beamer is focused on the field, not on Georgia’s No. 1 ranking. He might be the only one heading into Saturday’s game. Beamer told his staff no “shock the worlds” or other rah-rah platitudes around the team this week. Then his family sent him several texts saying just that. Beamer said his players are confident and should be. They play in the Southeastern Conference and have talented SEC players, too. Georgia comes in as defending national champs and with an impressive 49-3 victory in the opener over then-No. 11 Oregon. COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — This was supposed to be the year Texas A&M finally took the next step and contended with Alabama for the SEC title. Instead, last week’s 17-14 upset against scrappy Appalachian State sent the Aggies tumbling from No. 6 to No. 24 in The AP Top 25 and took some luster off Saturday night’s matchup against 13th-ranked Miami. Now the Aggies are looking for ways to move on from that stunning loss and salvage a season that started with so much promise. UNDATED (AP) — Nick Saban doesn’t have to give his players a history lesson. The Alabama coach need only point to last weekend’s Sun Belt Conference stunners ahead of Saturday’s game against Louisiana-Monroe, incidentally the architect of the most humbling loss of his tenure in Tuscaloosa. His current players weren’t out of elementary school at the time in 2007. The second-ranked Crimson Tide  tumbled from the top spot after barely surviving against Texas. It comes on the heels of a huge week for ULM’s Sun Belt Conference brethren, who pulled off upsets of Texas A&M, Notre Dame and Nebraska. FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Bobby Petrino returns to Arkansas as head coach at rising FCS program Missouri State. He left the Razorbacks after a scandal in 2012. His Bears won’t be afraid. Last year, they took Oklahoma State down to the wire in Stillwater before losing 23-16. No. 10 Arkansas has opened the season with wins against Cincinnati and South Carolina. A victory over Missouri State would put the Hogs at 3-0 for the second-straight year entering their rivalry game against No. 24 Texas A&M in Arlington, Texas. ATLANTA (AP) — Three weeks into the season, No. 20 Ole Miss is still sorting things out at quarterback. Maybe Saturday’s game at Georgia Tech will provide some clarity. Luke Altmyer started last week against Central Arkansas but went down with an upper-body injury. He appears fully recovered and should be able to go against the Yellow Jackets. Ole Miss also has Southern Cal transfer Jaxson Dart, who started the season-opening victory over Troy but opened the door for Altmyer with a lackluster performance. Coach Lane Kiffin isn’t saying who’ll take the first snap in Atlanta. Both QBs are likely to play. GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Anthony Richardson could use a confidence boost. The Florida quarterback was admittedly shaken during his two-turnover performance against Kentucky last week that included more than a dozen errant throws. He completed 14 of 35 passes for 143 yards in the 26-16 loss, and he ran for just 4 yards. Both of his interceptions led to touchdowns for the Wildcats. Richardson gets a chance to redeem himself when the 18th-ranked Gators host South Florida on Saturday night. It’s a seemingly well-timed matchup for Richardson, a third-year sophomore who looked unstoppable against the Bulls a year ago. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Coach Josh Heupel’s 15th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers have one final chance to work out remaining problems before diving into the Southeastern Conference portion of the season. Part of the Vols’ challenge is not overlooking Akron on Saturday night to a looming home game against No. 18 Florida. Heupel says the challenge each week is the Volunteers themselves. Tennessee is coming off a 34-27 overtime road win at then-No. 17 Pittsburgh. The Vols (2-0) survived mistakes by the offense and special teams thanks to a defense that rose to the challenge to escape with the big victory. Akron is coming off a 52-0 rout by then-No. 14 Michigan State. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

Sales Of Hardware Crypto Wallets Decline In Russia With Easing Currency Restrictions – Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/sales-of-hardware-crypto-wallets-decline-in-russia-with-easing-currency-restrictions-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ Interest in hardware wallets allowing cold storage of cryptocurrencies is decreasing among Russian users after this year’s surge that followed the invasion of Ukraine. The sale volumes for these devices have almost halved, according to a report quoting leading marketplaces. Russians’ Demand for Cold Storage Wallets Cools Down After Spike This Spring Retailers selling hardware cryptocurrency wallets in Russia are now overstocked, market participants have told the leading Russian business daily Kommersant. That’s after earlier this year these products saw an explosive demand after Moscow’s decision to militarily intervene in neighboring Ukraine. In the spring months, many Russians sought to acquire a cold storage device for their crypto assets, amid expanding sanctions over the Ukraine conflict and currency restrictions imposed by the Bank of Russia. Some Russian citizens relocating to other countries also took their savings with them in crypto. According to stats compiled by the Moneyplace analytics service, hardware wallet sales on the Ozon and Wildberries marketplaces reached a record high of 16.5 million rubles in May (over $275,000). In August, the figure fell by half, dropping below 8 million rubles (less than $135,000). A spokesperson for Ozon, known as “the Amazon of Russia,” said that the number of units sold increased more than five times in the first half of 2022, compared to the same period last year. Sales peaked in March, the e-commerce platform M.Video-Eldorado added. The online tech store Citilink launched a hardware wallet developed by Tangem at the end of June and its sales reached their highs in July. Roman Nekrasov, founder of ENCRY Foundation, which represents IT companies providing services in the field of blockchain and tech innovations, commented that the decline has come due to the Central Bank of Russia easing restrictions on cross-border currency transfers. In addition, “those who wanted to transfer assets abroad, most likely, have already done so,” the expert remarked. Sale volumes were also affected by the decreasing cost of crypto wallets, against the backdrop of both the reduced demand and the appreciating U.S. dollar. According to the estimates of Moneyplace, the average price of Safepal products fell three times between April and September, Ledger and Trezor registered a two-fold drop, while Tangem’s price lost a quarter. The trend was confirmed by Wildberries. The use of crypto wallets is not restricted in any way by the current Russian law since cryptocurrencies are yet to be comprehensively regulated, the report notes, quoting Pavel Ganin, partner at the A.t.legal law firm. Aaron Chomsky, head of the Investment Department at ICB Fund, believes that a recovery in demand for hardware wallets can be expected with a future improvement of crypto markets. Documenting Russias Destructive Impact On Food Storage In Ukraine U.S. Embassy Moscow
Documenting Russia’s Destructive Impact On Food Storage In Ukraine – U.S. Embassy Moscow https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/documenting-russias-destructive-impact-on-food-storage-in-ukraine-u-s-embassy-moscow/ MEDIA NOTE OFFICE OF THE SPOKESPERSON SEPTEMBER 15, 2022 President Putin’s unjustified war against Ukraine puts millions around the globe at risk of increasing food insecurity. The Kremlin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, one of the world’s largest exporters of food, has led to the damage or outright destruction of many of Ukraine’s arterial roads, railways, ports, and food storage facilities that are essential to getting its agricultural goods to international markets. These actions guarantee that the pain of this war will also be felt by the world’s most vulnerable populations. Today the Conflict Observatory, which is supported by the U.S. Department of State, released an independent, first-of-its-kind, and detailed assessment of the devastating impact of Russia’s war on food storage sites in Ukraine. An estimated 15.7% of Ukraine’s crop storage facilities have been affected during the conflict — either due to seizure by Russia’s and Russia-aligned forces, or because facilities have been destroyed, damaged, or degraded to the point of compromising the stocks contained inside. The report notes that intentional destruction of such facilities may constitute a war crime and a violation of the 1977 Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions of 1949; the United States calls for further investigation through appropriate mechanisms. This report and other analyses are available online at the Conflict Observatory website. Russia has exacerbated a global food security crisis, contributed to significant spikes in the cost of wheat, and forced a scramble to keep hungry and vulnerable populations fed. This summer, the United Nations and Turkey mediated an agreement with Russia and Ukraine to allow safe grain exports from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports. Since August 1, that agreement has reduced global food prices and brought more than 2.7 million metric tons of grain to global markets. But if agricultural infrastructure within Ukraine continues to be damaged in the war, this progress on global food security will be endangered. In 2022, Ukraine has become the scene of the worst mass-scale violence that Europe has seen in eight decades. Local hardships are compounded by its farmers’ strained ability to operate during wartime, replenish diminished food supplies, and prepare for planting seasons ahead. The ramifications of Russia’s aggression reverberate far outside Europe, and now affect the health and wellbeing of tens of millions of people worldwide. Since February, the United States has provided over $5.7 billion in humanitarian assistance to scale up emergency food security operations in food-insecure countries. The United States will continue to firmly stand with Ukraine as it defends its freedom, for the sake of its own people and of people across the globe who rely on the harvests from Ukraine’s farmlands. Our support for Ukraine remains unwavering. By U.S. Mission Russia | 16 September, 2022 | Topics: Agriculture, Europe & Eurasia, Fundamental Freedoms, Human Rights, News, Press Releases, Reports

10 Best Steam Alternatives For PC Gaming Tech News Today
10 Best Steam Alternatives For PC Gaming Tech News Today
10 Best Steam Alternatives For PC Gaming – Tech News Today https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/10-best-steam-alternatives-for-pc-gaming-tech-news-today/ Steam is undoubtedly the most used platform for purchasing and downloading video games. It is trusted and well-managed, and you can find almost any game you’re searching for on this platform. However, there might be times when you want to spice things up and try out new platforms. Whether your country has blocked access to Steam or you simply don’t want to use it to download your games, you may not want to launch Steam for various reasons. Steam also usually doesn’t provide discounts on a lot of newer titles.  If that is the case, then there are various alternatives that will let you purchase and download games even without having to access Steam. Best Alternatives for Steam Epic Games Store Epic Games Store is probably the most popular online games store after Steam. It has games like Valorant and Fortnite, which are gaining popularity day by day, and it also provides several free games at regular intervals of time(one game per week). If for some reason, you don’t want to use Steam or if it’s blocked in your region, then Epic Games might be the best choice for you. Epic Games Store has a nice and clean UI and has almost all the popular games available on Steam, except for some that are exclusive to Steam or other platforms. The price is similar as well. And on top of that, it only takes a 12% revenue cut from the publishers. It also has a section for user reviews for each game, but the developers have an option to turn it off. Epic Games Store is a good marketplace for both developers as well as players. If you only play really exclusive titles, then Epic Games Store might have a better alternative. GOG.com Formally known as “Good Old Gamers,” it is owned by CD Projekt, the same company that brought you games like the Witcher franchise and Cyberpunk 2077. Their website isn’t fancy, and it doesn’t have a lot of games, especially the newer titles. However, they do have a lot of retro games like Starcraft and Fallout. You’ll also find a lot of discounts on games on this platform. You may find video games and movies without Digital Rights Management(DRM) here. In terms of privacy, GOG.com is better than Steam or any other digital marketplace as it doesn’t verify or authenticate the games you purchase. You can simply pay for the game and download them through your browser. You also don’t need to install their client app to download the game. Unlike Steam, you can store your games on external drives and even play offline. And as this platform is owned by CD Project, you can purchase their games like Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 at great discounts. There are also sales for games several times a week. Ubisoft Connect Ubisoft Connect is a digital distribution and Digital Rights Management(DRM) platform which is owned by Ubisoft. It was developed by Ubisoft with the purpose of providing all their games under a single platform so that the players will be able to find and download their games without much hassle.  They use their own launcher to launch the games, and you can find all of their games here, such as the Assassin Creed and the Far Cry series. It also allows you to add your friends and keep up with each other’s progress and chat with each other. Ubisoft Connect features video games that are exclusive to Ubisoft and cannot be found on Steam, such as Assassin Creed Valhalla and other original titles. It also has a feature called Ubisoft+, which is essentially a subscription package that lets players play all their games on the day of their release, as well as opt-in for closed beta tests for upcoming games. It also allows you to import Ubisoft games that you’ve purchased from other platforms such as Steam or Epic Games Store. The EA App The EA App is the official digital store of Electronic Arts, where you can find all of the video games developed by EA Esports. If you are searching for a platform where you can find and purchase EA games, then there is no better platform than Origin.  It has its own launcher and features, which will let you chat with your in-game friends and join their games directly. It also has other features such as cloud saving, achievements, and cross-platform services. Users will also be able to subscribe to their subscription service, known as EA Play, to be able to play their upcoming games early as well as participate in closed beta testing. EA Play also comes with a bunch of other premium features, such as monthly rewards and discounts on games, as well as play trials of upcoming games without purchasing. Battle.net Battle.net is a digital platform developed by Blizzard Entertainment to provide easy access to its features and services to users. Here, you can find all of the games and DLCs developed by Blizzard Entertainment company. The most noticeable games of Blizzard are the World of Warcraft and Diablo series which you will be able to purchase and download right away from a single platform.  It also has other Battle.net exclusive games such as Overwatch, Starcraft franchise, Warcraft Franchise, etc. You can also download and play Call of Duty: Warzone from this platform. It doesn’t have a large collection of games like Steam and its competitors, but the games on this platform are certainly popular and exclusive.  Like Steam, it provides its own social networking service, and you’ll be able to chat with your friends and join their games. It also has its own forum where you’ll be able to ask different questions and get answers about them, and also get the latest news about your favorite games. GamersGate GamersGate is a web-based video games store where you’ll be able to find and purchase games from different developers and publishers. The thing that makes GamersGate stand out among its competitors is that it offers DRM-free games, and it also doesn’t require a client app to download its games. You can directly download the games from their website after making a purchase. GamersGate has a large collection of games from different publishers, and you can actually find games that aren’t listed on Steam. Of course, you can later add them to the library of their respective client as well. GamersGate also provides discounts on games from time to time. Even on games like Elden Ring, which has yet to receive a discount on Steam, you can usually find it on sale in GamersGate. It surprisingly has a clean and nice UI with categories as well. There are separate categories for sales, best sellers as well as new games, so you won’t have to navigate through the whole site to find a game you’re searching for and end up buying a bunch of other games in the process. Green Man Gaming It is another great website to purchase games at a great discount. It is also a web-based platform that offers DRM-free games, and you’ll be able to download them immediately after making a purchase. It features games from multiple platforms such as PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, as well as from various publishers.  It also offers different payment methods on games, so you don’t have to depend upon Paypal or a credit card like on Steam. It boasts more than 10000 games on their websites, so you’ll be able to find almost every game that is available on Steam. Also, every key they sell comes directly from the game’s publishers, so there is a little chance that you’ll be getting scammed. Humble Bundle Humble Bundle is another digital storefront that offers a variety of games, software as well as books for purchase and download. It also uses web browsers as its main platform and doesn’t force users to download their client app. You can directly purchase games from their website and download them immediately after the purchase. It has lots of games and software, including new AAA titles, on its store. They also sell games at a discounted price from time to time. Another noticeable thing about this website is that you can download different bundles of the game and pay the price you want. They also work for the betterment of society by donating a portion of the sale towards various charities. G2A G2A is a digital storefront that sells all sorts of electronic products along with video games. They also sell gift cards and software for all platforms. The best part about this website is that there are different sellers selling the same product for different prices, so you can choose the best price from among them. The products in G2A are also usually cheaper than that of its competitors. And it is all safe and legit as long as you purchase from their official website, so there is a little chance of being scammed as well. It is a good alternative for Steam, especially if you plan on purchasing different games and software from the same platform. Fanatical Fanatical is another web-based digital storefront that sells video games and bundles at a discounted price to its users. It also allows you to purchase these games by using different payment options. Games are usually available at a discounted price on this website, so it can be a good alternative to Steam, where you need to pay the full price to download them. It doesn’t provide its own launcher to run the game. However, once you purchase the games, you can easily integrate them into your Steam account and launch them from there. You can also purchase other things such as software and books from them in cheaper price deals.

P-J photo by Scott Reagle WESTFIELD — The Southwestern Trojans seem to be finding their formula for success. The Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton Thunderbirds were the victims Thursday night as they celebrated homecoming at Westfield Academy & Central School. Southwestern held the Thunderbirds to just 4 yards of offense and one first down en route to a 48-0 shutout in the Trojans’ Class C South opener. “There was a lot more intensity, a lot more physicality today,” Southwestern head coach Jake Burkholder said. “I think that comes with time and the confidence of just knowing the scheme and being able to execute that.” Defensive end Cameron Lemk led the way for Southwestern’s defense with seven tackles, including two for a loss, and two-and-a-half sacks. Colton Holbrook had six tackles, including one for a loss; Tavio Hoose had five tackles, including one for a loss, and a half-sack; and Chris Miller chipped in five tackles, including one for a loss. The Trojans’ Bohdan Wendel runs for a big gain in the fourth quarter. P-J photo by Scott Reagle “We told them up front that they set the tone. If we’re able to stop the run game and make them throw the ball, we’re going to be successful,” Burkholder said. “They took that to heart and really executed that today.” Matt Pannes led the way on the ground for Southwestern with 13 carries for 58 yards and three touchdowns while Bohdan Wendel came in late in the second half and carried the ball twice for 52 yards and a touchdown. “We’ve got some options back there. We’re able to move guys around,” Burkholder said. “‘Chubby’ (Pannes) ran the ball well. Bo came in and had a couple of nice runs. Having all of those different guys is a huge help for us.” Sophomore Owen Hayes went 8 of 12 through the air for 119 yards and a pair of first-quarter touchdowns. Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton’s offense struggled all night long and picked up its only first down on its first play of the second half when quarterback Hunter McCaslin completed an 18-yard swing pass to running back Jack Bourgeois. Southwestern’s Owen Hayes throws a pass during Class C South game against Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton in Westfield. P-J photo by Scott Reagle “We’re really disappointed. I felt like for a packed crowd on a Thursday night, I thought we could put something better on the field,” Thunderbirds head coach Ryan Gibbs said. “Southwestern is always tough, but I think we’re better than we showed tonight, for sure.” The Trojans drove 54 yards in nine plays for their first score of the game. On third-and-10 from their own 46-yard line, Hayes completed a 26-yard pass to Jameson Walsh and six plays later, on fourth-and-11 from the 18-yard line, Hayes threw a touchdown to Griffin Bodanowicz. The senior wide receiver tipped the ball to himself with his right hand and then secured the catch before crossing the goal line. Neves Hoose tacked on the first of six successful point-after kicks to make it 7-0 with 5:24 remaining in the first quarter. Southwestern took advantage of great field position on its second drive, needing just three offensive plays as Hayes threw a jump ball to Walsh in the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead. “That’s just a big confidence builder for our receivers, for our quarterbacks, for Owen … that was just good all the way around,” Burkholder said. “Our line held up, did well today and we were able to make some things happen.” Pannes scored the next three touchdowns for the Trojans on runs of 3, 2 and 12 yards, the third one coming with 3:36 left in the third quarter giving Southwestern a 34-0 lead. Matt Burlingame’s 5-yard run and Wendel’s 32-yard run gave Southwestern its final two scores of the night. The Trojans (2-1, 1-0) will go on the road again next Friday night when they visit Silver Creek before hosting a pair of league showdowns against Salamanca and Fredonia at Charles A. Lawson Field. “You have to start off on the right foot,” Burkholder said. “Every win is a great win, but having our first league win is always the first step.” The Thunderbirds (1-2, 0-2), who lost their league opener to Silver Creek/Forestville last Friday, will host nonleague Springville next Friday. “We had two kids out all week with the flu and came back today. We’re really young. Our depth is ninth-graders that we had to bring up,” Gibbs said. “When we struggle up front, the team is going to struggle like a typical football team. Today, we got beat up pretty good.” Southwestern 14 14 6 14 — 48 Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton 0 0 0 0 — 0 Sou–Bogdanowicz 18 pass from Hayes (Hoose kick) Sou–Walsh 16 pass from Hayes (Hoose kick) Sou–Pannes 3 run (Hoose kick) Sou–Pannes 2 run (Hoose kick) Sou–Pannes 12 run (kick failed) Sou–Burlingame 5 run (Hoose kick) Today’s breaking news and more in your inbox

The only downside is that you can only pair one Sub Mini with a Sonos soundbar, unlike the Sub which you can pair two with Sonos’s flagship soundbar, the Arc. The Sonos Sub Mini will be available in matte black or white finishes. It is available for preorder now and will hit stores globally on October 6. Price: $429 LEARN MORE DJI Osmo Action 3 Courtesy DJI announced its newest action cameras, the Osmo Action 3. FTX Is In The Lead To Buy Crypto Lender Voyager Digital’s Assets Out Of Bankruptcy: Source – CoinDesk https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/ftx-is-in-the-lead-to-buy-crypto-lender-voyager-digitals-assets-out-of-bankruptcy-source-coindesk/ Ian Allison is an award-winning senior reporter at CoinDesk. Exchange giant FTX is in the lead to buy the assets of Voyager Digital, the cryptocurrency lender whose bankruptcy filing deepened this year’s industry crisis, but higher offers could still come in in the days ahead, according to a person familiar with the matter. An auction was held this week through bankruptcy court for Voyager’s assets. At the final stage it was a battle between billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX exchange and Wave Financial, a digital-asset investment firm, according to the person. FTX’s bid was higher, the person added. It’s unclear how much FTX agreed to pay. FTX didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. A Wave representative declined to comment. CoinDesk reported on Aug. 25 that FTX and Binance were in the hunt to acquire Voyager. FTX had made an offer for Voyager that was rejected in July as a “low-ball bid.” The presence of Wave among bidders hadn’t previously been revealed. Earlier this week, CoinDesk reported that FTX is raising capital in parallel with a potential acquisition. A deal for Voyager could bring a relatively tidy end to one of the most harrowing tales from a terrible year for crypto. After crypto prices sank, Voyager in early July barred customers from withdrawing their money. Its clients then became company creditors in bankruptcy court, forced to get in line with sophisticated restructuring lawyers and financiers as novice participants in a potentially laborious process to get their funds back. Unlike a conventional bank, Voyager’s failure didn’t trigger government-backed deposit insurance that makes most bank customers whole – which apparently surprised some Voyager users. A purchase wouldn’t end Voyager’s Chapter 11 case. U.S. bankruptcy law, however, gives leeway to sell assets so troubled companies can maximize how much money they can recover to pay their creditors. U.S. SEC’s Crypto Guidelines Push Up Costs For Lenders, Disrupting Projects – Reuters.com https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/u-s-secs-crypto-guidelines-push-up-costs-for-lenders-disrupting-projects-reuters-com/ WASHINGTON, Sept 16 (Reuters) – Banks’ cryptocurrency projects have been upended by U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) accounting guidance that would make it too capital-intensive for lenders to hold crypto tokens on behalf of clients, according to more than half a dozen people with knowledge of the matter. A slew of lenders including U.S. Bancorp (USB.N), Goldman Sachs Group Inc , JPMorgan Chase & Co , BNY Mellon , Wells Fargo & Co , Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE), BNP Paribas (BNPP.PA) and State Street Corp (STT.N) offer or are working on crypto products and services for clients in a bid to tap in to the $1 trillion crypto market, according to their public statements and media reports. But on March 31, the SEC said public companies that hold crypto assets on behalf of clients or others must account for them as liabilities on their balance sheets due to their technological, legal and regulatory risks. read more Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com While the guidance applies to all public companies, it is especially problematic for banks because their strict capital rules, overseen by bank regulators, require them to hold cash against balance sheet liabilities. The SEC did not consult the banking regulators when issuing the guidance, according to four of the people. The SEC’s move complicates banks’ efforts to jump on the digital asset bandwagon, and could keep them on the sidelines even as they report increased demand from clients looking to access the burgeoning market. “This has thrown a huge wrench in the mix,” one of the sources said. Lenders building out crypto offerings have had “to cease moving forward with those plans pending any kind of further action from the SEC and the banking regulatory agencies,” they added. Custody banks State Street and BNY Mellon, which have been building digital asset offerings, are among those whose projects have been disrupted, according to three people with knowledge of the matter. While the accounting guidance does not stop State Street from offering crypto custody services, it would make doing so uneconomical, said Nadine Chakar, head of State Street Digital. “We do have an issue with the premise of doing that, because these are not our assets. This should not be on our balance sheet,” said Chakar. A spokesperson for BNY Mellon declined to comment on the status of its crypto custody project. “BNY Mellon believes digital assets are here to stay, and increasingly becoming part of the mainstream of finance,” he added. When asked about the SEC guidance, a U.S. Bancorp spokesperson said it is still servicing existing clients for which it offers bitcoin custody services. “However, we are pausing intake of additional clients in this service as we evaluate the evolving regulatory environment.” One executive at a European bank looking to launch crypto custody services said it would now be prohibitively costly for the bank to do so in the United States due to the SEC guidance. Spokespeople for the SEC and the other banks declined to comment. The problems the SEC guidance is causing for banks, which have not previously been reported, underscore the broader challenges lenders face in trying to capitalize upon the growing crypto market amid ongoing regulatory confusion and skepticism. “We’ve heard from a wide variety of stakeholders, banks among them, about how challenging this new staff accounting bulletin would be for them to be able to enter in to the space of custodying crypto assets,” U.S. Representative Trey Hollingsworth, who sent SEC Chair Gary Gensler a letter in July expressing concern about the guidance, said in an interview. “This edict came down without guidance, without input, without feedback, without conversation being had with industry.” CAPITAL PUNISHMENT? As the cryptocurrency market ballooned in 2020, financial institutions were eager to cash in. Despite the crypto market contracting significantly this year, lenders still see an opportunity for their services. Offering to hold clients’ digital assets appeared the safest way to enter the market. Banks commonly offer custody for a variety of financial instruments and have generally not been required to reflect them on their balance sheet, unless they are commingled with the bank’s own assets. read more The SEC guidance departed from that practice. At a conference last week, the SEC’s acting chief accountant said that custodied crypto assets present “unique” risks which meet the definition of a liability under U.S. accounting standards. In a June letter to bank regulators, however, the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, American Bankers Association and the Bank Policy Institute said such risks are already mitigated by strict bank supervision and rules. Factoring in planned international Basel capital rules, the guidance could cost more than $1 of capital for every $1 of digital assets held, the groups estimated, meaning crypto custody “effectively would be prohibited.” The SEC guidance also appears to apply where lenders outsource the custody function to a third party, such as Anchorage Digital, the sources said. Diogo Mónica, president of Anchorage Digital, said the capital cost was “completely unsupportable” and that “every single bank” Anchorage works with is now waiting on regulators before proceeding to work with Anchorage on crypto custody solutions. Industry groups have been lobbying the SEC to carve banks out of the guidance, according to four of the sources and industry letters, although the agency appears unpersuaded, one of those people said. Some lenders, instead, are seeking individual exemptions, two people said. The industry is also lobbying the banking regulators to issue guidance that would neutralize the capital impact of the SEC guidance, although changing capital rules would be a major undertaking which looks unlikely in the short term, the people said. The Federal Reserve, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and Federal Deposit Insurance Corp declined to comment.
