Web3 Devs ‘more Active Than Ever’ Amid Crypto Winter: Report – Cointelegraph https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/web3-devs-more-active-than-ever-amid-crypto-winter-report-cointelegraph/ Consecutive all-time-high smart contract deployments and surging usage of Web3 script libraries mean that Web3 devs are still busy working despite the prolonged market downturn. 1029 Total views 30 Total shares Web3 developers don’t appear to be fazed by the crypto bear market, with one Web3 platform suggesting they’re “more active than ever” — particularly on the Ethereum network. In a new Q3 2022 report on Oct. 13 by Web3 development platform Alchemy, the company said that 2022 could be the “biggest year yet” for Web3 developers. Around 36% of all smart contracts ever deployed and verified on the blockchain have been in 2022, a count of nearly 118,000 compared to the over 323,700 ever deployed, according to the report. This is despite the price of Ether (ETH) falling by nearly 66% since the start of the year and the total value locked in decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols falling around 70% year-to-date, according to DappRadar. Nonfungible token (NFT) trading volumes have also taken a beating, decreasing by 98% since late January. Alchemy states the deployment of smart contracts increased by 40% from the first quarter of the year with consecutive all-time highs hit every month over the third quarter peaking at 17,376 in September alone. Monthly verified smart contracts in Q3 2022. Image: Alchemy The data also shows smart contract deployments increased by 143% compared to the third quarter of 2021, reaching over 48,500 for the third quarter of 2022. Alchemy noted that in the two weeks following Ethereum’s Merge — when the blockchain moved from a proof-of-work to proof-of-stake consensus — smart contract deployment increased by 14%, suggesting some developers may have been waiting for the event to launch their projects. The company also analyzed the usage of two Web3 script libraries, Ethers.js and Web3.js, which allow developers to read blockchain data and build Web3 products. The team found the number of developers installing either library had increased by three times that of Q3 2021 to over 1.5 million downloads on average per week. Related: Demand for talent in crypto less dependent on market as industry matures Although some have claimed this current crypto bear market is a good time to build products in Web3 that hasn’t always been the case in previous cycles. As evidenced in Alchemy’s data, the 2017 to 2020 bear market saw a 45% decline in smart contract deployments in the middle of the cycle, from 2018 to 2019, although so far that metric has increased by 50% this year from 2021.

INDIA RUPEE Rupee Seen Higher After Dollar’s Post U.S. Inflation Rally Fades – Reuters https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/india-rupee-rupee-seen-higher-after-dollars-post-u-s-inflation-rally-fades-reuters/ MUMBAI, Oct 14 (Reuters) – The Indian rupee is tipped to strengthen versus the U.S. currency on Friday after the dollar’s rally following higher-than-expected U.S. inflation data proved short lived. The rupee is expected at around 82.20 in early trading, up from 82.3450 in the previous session. The dollar index dropped in Asia trading to 112.22 after having reached almost 114 immediately into the data. This probability was less than 10% a week back. The dollar advanced against its major peers soon after the data, while U.S. equity futures plunged and Treasury yields rose. However, U.S. equity futures and the dollar witnessed an intraday turnaround while Treasury yield came off highs. RIT Becomes Test Site For Yamaha Immersive Audio Technology | RIT – Rochester Institute Of Technology https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/rit-becomes-test-site-for-yamaha-immersive-audio-technology-rit-rochester-institute-of-technology/ Researchers at Rochester Institute of Technology are improving how people experience sound. Some of those improvements will add to the high-tech acoustics being developed by international entertainment company Yamaha Corp. Sungyoung Kim’s Applied and Innovative Research for Immersive Sound Lab (AIRIS) at RIT became a test site to explore future capabilities of one of Yamaha’s newest technologies, the Active Field Control System (AFC). Kim and his students will help develop next-phase improvements to the high-tech audio system. “I was approached by Yamaha to discuss the future of this technology. The first step was to adapt all the Yamaha technology into our lab. That was phase one,” said Kim, an associate professor of audio engineering technology in RIT’s College of Engineering Technology, who has a background in developing immersive audio systems that enhance sound in modern spaces. AFC technology enhances an environment by controlling reverberations and sound/object positions, deepening acoustics in passive spaces, and creating various auditory ambient settings that augment the architecture of the site. Often referred to as 3D audio, virtual and immersive sound is an emerging research and production field where companies such as Yamaha continually seek to provide enriched quality sound over varied platforms, especially for classical music concerts in 3D. “One of the existing issues in 3D music performances is how to synchronize computer-generated parts and acoustic atmospheres with human performances. And this is a hot research topic about how computers recognize music and follow a human’s performance,” said Kim. “Composers are using technology as a supporting one to accomplish their musical creativity. We just changed the concept.” Part of the concept entailed understanding the integration of the music and listening environment. The system enables the re-creation of certain acoustical settings to enhance live performances. It’s more than improvements to speakers; the system adjusts acoustics of a modern space, for example, to give an audience the impression they are experiencing sound—from ancient cathedral to wind-blown caves—without having to be in the actual setting. ‌ Photo provided by SungYoung Kim From left to right, RIT’s SungYoung Kim, Shigeki Takasaka, stream editor/director, and Sihyun Uhm, composer, discuss the process for performing her new work with the Active Field Control System. The concert took place at Yamaha’s Ginza-Japan location. As part of a first experiment, Kim worked with a composer from the Eastman School of Music, Sihyun Uhm, asking her to render a new piece of music through the system. Computers can have pre-recorded effects, but this system differs by putting an audience into the aural environment. The composer intended to have the audience sense or internally visualize two environments— a mountain and desert, and the composition moved back and forth between each one, Kim explained. “Many people are trying this today. With orchestras, for example, there are always changes in orchestral movements, comparable from one scene to another in a play,” he said. “This new composition was only 10-minutes long. We changed the acoustic scenery, or the musical scenery, several times within one movement—which is unique and challenging.  It is a different approach to music.” Uhm’s composition, String Quartet No. 2, was performed at the Yamaha Ginza Studio in Tokyo, Japan last summer, and Kim was joined by Hideo Miyazaki, a Spatial Acoustic Design Engineer with Yamaha, local musicians, colleagues from the company as well as several alumni from RIT’s engineering technology program living in Japan. Four RIT students participated as assistant engineers/operators for the concert, working with the AFC system as Kim prepared for the concert. “While students can learn many aspects of acoustics from books, the system provided a unique learning opportunity in how to virtually manipulate acoustics in real-time,” said Kim, whose work is funded through two corporate grants from Yamaha. The first, “Toward individualized presentation of immersive experience,” is a three-year grant to assess the auditory selective attention process, a cognitive process humans undertake to distinguish sounds and environments. Another, “Investigating perceptual cues required for remote tuning of the Yamaha AFC System,” is about the process of virtual connections and how engineers virtually tune systems without going in to the actual space. “It is more technical in how to remotely tune a system, and it involves the concept of working in the metaverse. With people doing more remote, virtual work, there is a need to have audio systems compatible and with audio quality as high as possible,” Kim said. This audio research for Yamaha can also impact RIT with its multiple conference and auditorium spaces across campus. RIT can be an experiment space where physically separated spaces can be virtually synchronized. “We can have one musician in one building, another musician in another building, and I want to see if they can play together,” he said. “It is the future of music in the metaverse. You can have an artist performing in Korea, while another plays in the U.S.—even here at RIT. In the metaverse there shouldn’t be any walls or barriers between those musicians. I think acoustic scenery is the thing to make them feel that they are in the same space.”

Overwatch 2s Junker Queen Is Female Representation In Gaming Done Right Dexerto
Overwatch 2s Junker Queen Is Female Representation In Gaming Done Right Dexerto
Overwatch 2’s Junker Queen Is Female Representation In Gaming Done Right – Dexerto https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/overwatch-2s-junker-queen-is-female-representation-in-gaming-done-right-dexerto/ Overwatch 2’s Junker Queen, and the game’s generally diverse hero roster, are inspiring inclusions and an example of just how far the gaming space has come in regards to nuanced and fully-realized female representation and diversity in their characters. As a queer female-identifying gamer, finding video game characters that I can relate to hasn’t been the easiest thing in the world. More often than not, when I did find a female character in a game that was compelling, they were either in the game for a very limited amount of time or oversexualized. Overwatch may not be perfect, but it has created a roster of diverse characters in a way many other games are still unable to do. It reflects the gaming community as a whole. It has been documented for years now that the ratio of female and male gamers is almost one-to-one. However, developers are still struggling to catch up when it comes to making sure their characters embody who it is by picking up the controllers. While I’m not the biggest online multiplayer gamer, Overwatch appealed to me from the early days because of how different and real their characters were. Not only do they have female characters, characters of color and LGBTQ+ heroes, Overwatch has playable figures who are more than just the typical body type and characterization I’ve come to expect from diverse characters. Blizzard Entertainment The three new heroes added for Overwatch 2 are all female-presenting. Overwatch 2 adds even more diversity to its roster The new release of Overwatch 2 has built upon the diverse roster even more so, with the likes of Junker Queen, Sojourn, and Kiriko all great examples of the way female-presenting characters have evolved to be more than just one body type, one complexion, and one personality.  In particular, Junker Queen has been a character that, from initial community response, is resonating with the masses. For voice actor Leah de Niese, taking on the role and having her character be more than just a one dimensional figure was something of great importance. “It’s wild,” de Niese told Dexerto. “I really do have a very strong goal as an artist. To represent women, to be a strong female voice. That has just become more and more prominent for me in the last 5-10 years, to the point where I’m sort of switching off when things are very male-heavy, from a male lens.”  “So to come into this world, where the gender divide could be seen as being there, female characters, just gotta get those big boobs on them and make them look sexy.” Unfortunately, this concern of de Niese isn’t unwarranted. Some of the oldest and more well known female characters in gaming have been oversezualized for decades. Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft is the most obvious example. Lara Croft has a checkered history when it comes to her portrayal in the gaming space. The recent trilogy did a fantastic job of stripping away those preconceived notions and portraying the character in a new light, but older gaming fans will still know her for her tiny shorts and, thanks to some great old school graphics, triangular breasts. For de Niese, having the chance to portray a female-identifying character that breaks this mold. “Junker Queen, she’s such an important female. That strength she has, and she’s sexy, we can be strong and sexy. And she’s rough as guts, she smashes any male that comes across her path. So that’s a really exciting position for me to be in, giving a voice to strong women.” Junker Queen is much more than a stereotypical female character To de Niese’s point, that is part of what is so exciting about having a character like Junker Queen be in many ways one of the new biggest faces of Overwatch 2. She’s tough and more masculine presenting, but also a character that embodies and owns her femininity.  As someone who has always been more masculine presenting myself, I felt that even when I did have the chance to play as a female character I was still unable to relate to them. What’s more, the Overwatch 2 community is loving Junker Queen — a character many had lofty expectations for given her importance in lore. Having overtly sexualized female characters paired up with male characters in appropriate clothing always sent me the wrong message about being a woman in the gaming space. Especially when considering that these characters were largely created and designed by men.  So why is it that the gaming space still struggles with diversity? It’s important to note that when we have this discussion, not all video game franchises are being targeted. As well as Overwatch, series such as Life is Strange, The Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Valorant all have a great roster of female characters. Junker Queen builds on Overwatch 2’s already diverse roster. However, the issue the gaming space seems to still be grappling with is how older gaming franchises evolve into a more inclusive space. The controversy surrounding GTA 6’s female protagonist — and the sexist comments made in response to that leak — are an example of how an older and more established gaming series is trying to be better but is being held back by fans and gamers. Thankfully, Overwatch doesn’t have that issue and from the sounds of it, a character like Junker Queen is set to play a big part in the sequel going forward. “Of course you can expect more,” concluded de Niese. “The Queen is such a huge, exciting part of Overwatch 2. Not to say the other heroes aren’t, we all are, but we’re so excited for what we’ve got in store for the queen.”

Lawyers Zoom In On The Metaverse Financial Times
Lawyers Zoom In On The Metaverse Financial Times
Lawyers Zoom In On The Metaverse – Financial Times https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/lawyers-zoom-in-on-the-metaverse-financial-times/ Antti Innanen regularly meets clients from all over the world in his office, which overlooks snow-capped mountain ranges and has a huge wraparound balcony. It is, however, a virtual space. “It’s nicer than our actual office in Helsinki,” jokes the chief executive of Dot, a Finnish legal design consultancy. His business is one of a number of law firms and legal technology companies setting up offices in the metaverse — an immersive virtual world where workers are represented by 3D avatars, and which many regard as the next generation of the internet. The legal industry is notoriously conservative, but some forward-thinking lawyers are testing out metaverses such as Decentraland or The Sandbox, which allow users to connect up, as well as run businesses, buy parcels of “land” to build virtual office space, host virtual meetings and buy and sell digital assets. They are not alone. In recent months, big companies as well as smaller start-ups have rushed to stake a place in the metaverse. HSBC, for example, has purchased digital real estate in The Sandbox, which is expected to become a stadium to host virtual sporting events. And where clients go, law firms typically follow. So lawyers are opening offices in virtual worlds as a way of connecting with technology clients and entrepreneurs who are increasingly doing business there. Rodrigo González Ruiz, partner in digital law at Deloitte Legal in Madrid, says the firm is developing its own virtual office, which will enable team members based there and in Barcelona and London to meet clients. It will also be used to train lawyers and includes features such as a virtual blackboard — an online space dedicated to learning. “We were thinking about new ways to interact with our clients and to attract the interests of clients,” says González Ruiz, who began exploring new ways of working online during the Covid-19 pandemic. He wanted more than the existing flat screens and Teams calls. “Younger clients are very used to using these kinds of tools,” he says, adding that the way companies are interacting with the law firm is also changing. “Instead of having a report of evidence that is 100 pages, clients now want quick advice and effective advice. Younger clients are very, very digital.” Dot, which redesigns legal processes and documents, has set up in the metaverse using a program called Spatial. It made the move after its staff across Europe spent months of remote working during the coronavirus pandemic and after Innanen relocated to Spain from Finland last year. At a time when employers and employees are debating hybrid and remote working, Innanen says the law firm started thinking about its big office space and meeting rooms and whether they were really necessary. “On the other hand, the work that we do is very collaborative,” he explains. “Teams and Zoom are very convenient but, sometimes, they lack a sense of connection . . . We have all our weekly meetings at our metaverse office. It is a good way of connecting and, as we are all present in avatars, it gives you a feeling of being together.” There are many other advantages. Dot staff based in Spain, Berlin and Helsinki can interact as avatars using the virtual office and there are no constraints on visitor numbers. “We get a lot of requests from student organisations [to say] they would like to visit our offices. But, unfortunately, our office in Helsinki is tiny. Inviting students to the metaverse office is a fun way to present our way of working and our cases to the students,” says Innanen. US law firms are increasingly active in the metaverse. Grungo Colarulo, a US law firm specialising in personal injury, entered the metaverse with an office in Decentraland last December, with help from the 11-year-old daughter of founding partner Richard Grungo Jr, who used her experience of online gaming worlds such as Minecraft. German law firm Gleiss Lutz opened an office in the metaverse in July. Some more sceptical law firms point out that it is still expensive to “buy” office space in the metaverse, and there are also concerns about cyber security and protection for sensitive client data. Innanen highlights some practical problems. Clients can easily get lost when navigating virtual spaces without a host avatar to guide them. There can be technological glitches and some visitors pay less attention than in real life. “I might be giving a seminar in the metaverse and there will often be one or two people running around like crazy or doing something like creating a massive cartoon of a cat,” he says. Opening an office in the metaverse is only one way in which law firms are embracing new technologies, though. They increasingly deal with clients that use blockchain and cryptocurrency, and some have started to accept cryptocurrency as payment for legal services. I met a Swiss lawyer in our metaverse office today and I felt I got to know them better than if we had spoken on a Zoom call US firms such as Steptoe & Johnson, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, and Perkins Coie are now accepting currencies such as bitcoin in exchange for legal services. Gunnercooke became one of the first UK law firms to do the same when it said in February that it would accept payment in currencies including bitcoin and Ethereum. Partner James Burnie says: “We have three or four clients a month paying in crypto. Some clients do fundraisings and receive crypto and are very keen to do this.” The decision by law firms to accept thee digital assets means that smaller businesses that have raised start-up funding in a cryptocurrency, can now buy vital early-stagelegal advice that they otherwise would not have been able to pay for. However, many mainstream law firms have steered clear of being paid in cryptocurrency because of swings in its value. Bitcoin’s price dropped from above $67,000 in November 2021 to below $19,000 in September, for example. US regulators have also urged caution because of concerns that volatility in cryptocurrencies could breach professional conduct rules that prohibit the country’s lawyers from charging unreasonable fees to clients. The Nebraska Ethics Advisory Opinion for Lawyers was one of the first by a US state ethics body to address bitcoin payments. It advised that lawyers should swiftly convert any cryptocurrency received into US dollars to comply with professional conduct rules. Aside from these questions over payments, lawyers such as Innanen are convinced that becoming early adopters of new technology will give them a vital edge. “I met a Swiss lawyer in our metaverse office today and I felt I got to know them better than if we had spoken on a Zoom call because we were effectively in the same place,” he says. 10 Cool New Gadgets To Keep On Your Radar Gear Patrol
10 Cool New Gadgets To Keep On Your Radar – Gear Patrol https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/10-cool-new-gadgets-to-keep-on-your-radar-gear-patrol/ For more of the latest and greatest product releases, check out our full collection of the best new gear. A lot happened this week. Amazon had its second annual Prime Day — and there are many gadgets still on sale. Microsoft held its big Surface event this week where it announced its next-gen computers (you can read more on those below). And Kodak apparently can’t keep up with the demand for film. There were a bunch of new other products announced, too. Here’s what you need to know. KEF Mu7 Courtesy KEF announced its first pair of wireless headphones with active noise-cancellation — the Mu7 — and at $300, they’re designed and priced to compete with other flagship noise-canceling headphones like the Sony WH-1000XM5. The Mu7 sport custom 40mm drivers and support for aptX HD for high-end sound. They get their unique industrial design (made out of aluminum) thanks to partnership with Ross Lovegrove, who has helped KEF design a number of its super expensive loudspeakers. Available in two different shades of grey: silver or charcoal. Price: $400 LEARN MORE Beyerdynamic Xelento Courtesy Beyerdynamic announced second-generation models of its Xelento Remote (pictured, $999) and Xelento Wireless ($1,199), which are wired and wireless (neckband-style) in-ear headphones, respectively. And they don’t come cheap. The two models pack the same 11mm dynamic drivers, gold-plated connectors and silver-plated cables. The Xelento Wireless support Bluetooth 5.2 and promise 14 hours of playtime. Price: $999 (Remote); $1,199 (Wireless) LEARN MORE Microsoft Surface Studio 2 Plus Courtesy The Surface Studio 2 Plus is an updated version of its fancy all-in-one desktop, which is notable for its 28-inch touchscreen display that can also fold nearly flat on your desk (so it’s easier to draw on). This new version has updated chipsets (both CPU and GPU), which Microsoft claims doubles its performance, and it has three Thunderbolt 4 ports on its back. And no, it doesn’t come cheap. It’ll be available on October 25. Price: $4,300 LEARN MORE Microsoft Surface Laptop 5 Courtesy The Surface Laptop 5 is pretty modest update over its predecessor, the Surface Laptop 5, as Microsoft has given it new Intel processors — although there’s no option for AMD chip like before —and USB-C ports with support for Thunderbolt 4. You’ll be able to order it in either 13.5- or 15-inch models. And it’ll be available on October 25. Price: $999+ Microsoft Surface Pro 9 Courtesy The Surface Pro 9 is Microsoft’s newest 2-in-1 tablet. It’s very similar to the Surface Pro 8, but it packs newer Intel (12-gen) or ARM chipsets and can be purchased with in color aluminum finishes; previously with the Surface Pro 8, you could spruce it up with a colorful keyboard and other accessories. It has the same 13-inch display as its predecessor. It’ll be available on October 25. Price: $1,000+ LEARN MORE Acer Swift Edge Courtesy Acer is claiming that its Swift Edge is the lightest 16-inch OLED laptop in the world; it weighs 2.58 pounds, which is actually lighter than Apple’s newest 13-inch M2 MacBook Air, which weighs 2.73 pounds — and that’s pretty nuts. The most notable thing on the inside is that the Swift Edge packs a new AMD Ryzen processor, which is supposed to be more energy efficient than Intel’s latest processors, and it’s going to need that efficiency to power such big and bright OLED display. Price: $1,500 LEARN MORE Meta Quest Pro Courtesy The Quest Pro is the company’s highest-end and most expensive virtual reality headset to date. Compared to the $399 Quest 2, the Quest Pro is better in just about every way — better display, better processor, more memory and it comes with significantly improved controllers— but it’s also being positioned as more of a productivity device than for gaming. It has a new full-color passthrough feature for mixed reality experiences, so you can see the real world with real-time graphics, alerts and notifications. Price: $1,499 LEARN MORE Roku Smart Home Courtesy Roku has announced its own ecosystem of smart home devices to compete with likes of Google Home, Amazon’s Alexa and Apple HomeKit. It’s called the Roku Smart Home and it consists of indoor and outdoor security cameras, a video doorbell, smart lights and smart plugs. All these devices will work with Roku’s voice assistant, Roku Voice, and be compatible with Roku’s new Smart Home app. They will be compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant, as well, so buying into Roku’s ecosystem doesn’t completely lock you in either. Price: Depends on the device LEARN MORE Acer Chromebook 516 GE Courtesy The Acer Chromebook 516 GE is really the first Chromebook that’s designed for gaming. It has a 16-inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a 120Hz refresh rate. It has a RGB keyboard because, well, it’s a gaming laptop. It lacks the souped up processor and graphics card of real gaming laptops, however, and instead depends on a fast internet connection (supports Wi-Fi 6E) for cloud gaming. Price: $650 LEARN MORE Sony ZV-1F Courtesy The Sony ZV-1F is the company’s newest compact camera for vlogging. It’s just $500, which is its cheapest option to date, and it’s designed for entry-level vloggers looking to upgrade from their smartphone. The Sony ZV-1F is essentially a more budget-friendly option to the Sony ZV-1 ($748); it has a similar 20-megapixel 1-inch sensor, but has 20mm f/2 lens, which is less versatile than the ZV-1’s 24-70mm lens. Price: $500 LEARN MORE

Mastercard Focusing On 5 Key Areas To Turn Crypto Into ‘an Everyday Way To Pay’ – Featured Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/mastercard-focusing-on-5-key-areas-to-turn-crypto-into-an-everyday-way-to-pay-featured-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ Mastercard has outlined five key crypto areas it is working on in order to “turn cryptocurrencies into an everyday way to pay.” A Mastercard executive opined: “Someday soon, the ability to own and spend a digital currency could be as seamless as making a contactless card payment.” Mastercard Focusing on 5 Major Areas Covering Crypto, Metaverse, and NFTs Mastercard highlighted on Wednesday five different areas it is working on in order to “turn cryptocurrencies into an everyday way to pay.” Raj Dhamodharan, executive vice president of Digital Asset and Blockchain Products & Digital Partnerships at Mastercard, explained: “Digital assets like cryptocurrencies and central bank digital currencies [CBDCs] have the potential to transform the financial system’s infrastructure.” He added that non-fungible tokens (NFTs), blockchain gaming, and metaverse experiences “could change how consumers shop and communicate.” The executive opined: Someday soon, the ability to own and spend a digital currency could be as seamless as making a contactless card payment. Dhamodharan proceeded to outline five key areas that Mastercard is working on to make this happen. The first area is crypto cards. He detailed that Mastercard already announced dozens of new crypto card programs globally this year. For example, in the U.S., the payments giant worked with Gemini on a credit card that pays rewards in cryptocurrencies. In Argentina, the company launched a prepaid card with Binance. In Europe, Mastercard recently announced the world’s first physical debit card that can be customized to include a customer’s NFT avatar. The second area is services for crypto. Noting that “Mastercard is a provider of cybersecurity, digital ID, advisory and open banking services to tens of thousands of financial institutions,” Dhamodharan said the company is going to use the same tools “to provide more support to crypto players and issuers.” Mastercard has expanded its consulting work to include a dedicated crypto practice and it completed the purchase of Ciphertrace last year. The company will soon launch a new crypto monitoring product called Crypto Secure. The third area is payments. “We’ve partnered with a handful of top-tier crypto-focused companies — including Paxos, Circle, Evolve and Uphold — to develop ways for people to quickly convert their crypto to fiat to make payments. This work will support current and future crypto card partnerships,” the executive detailed. Noting that the fourth area focuses on crypto on the Mastercard networks, Dhamodharan emphasized: An important way to expand choice for people is to bring certain Mastercard-approved digital assets onto our networks, a plan we announced last year that continues to move forward. The fifth area concerns the metaverse and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Mastercard is working to grow its partnerships to support NFTs and the metaverse, Dhamodharan explained. For example, Coinbase users can now pay for NFTs with Mastercard. In conclusion, the Mastercard executive noted that the payments giant already operates “a trusted global network that enables payments with a single tap or click.” He added, “That’s what the crypto economy needs to support the next million users — or the next billion,” elaborating: We’re excited to prioritize these core areas to give people more access to the crypto ecosystem and help it keep innovating and growing. What do you think about the five key areas Mastercard is engaged in to “turn cryptocurrencies into an everyday way to pay”? Let us know in the comments section below. S. relationship. When President Biden visited the Saudi city of Jiddah three months ago, he was greeted with a fratboy-like familiarity by the 37-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The meeting sparked a wave of criticism for the U.S. leader, who was accused of cozying up to the de facto head of a country he had once pledged to make a “pariah” after to the murder of Saudi dissident and Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi. But any hopes for a renewed bromance between the United States and Saudi Arabia were shattered last week when the Saudi-led oil cartel OPEC Plus announced it would cut its oil output by 2 million barrels a day — a move that could boost prices in the United States over the winter, a major political problem for Biden only a month before highly competitive midterm elections. That OPEC Plus includes Russia, at odds with the United States and its allies over its invasion of Ukraine, was just another kick in the teeth. The Biden administration quickly fired back. It announced it would be reviewing the U.S. relationship with Saudi Arabia, warning of “consequences” for the action. In return, Riyadh offered an unusually detailed and combative response. On the official Saudi Press Agency, an unnamed official rejected any suggestion that it was taking sides against the United States and that the decision to cut production was based only on “economic considerations.” “The Kingdom affirms that it view[s] its relationship with the United States of America as a strategic one that serves the common interests of both countries. The Kingdom also stresses the importance of building on the solid pillars upon which the Saudi-US relationship had stood over the past eight decades,” the statement said. Among these pillars, it frostily concluded, was “mutual respect.” At a press briefing Thursday, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby rejected that explanation and accused Saudi Arabia of tacitly supporting the war in Ukraine. “Do they want to stay on the side of Russia?” Kirby asked of Saudi Arabia. The relationship between Saudi Arabia and the United States is a strange one. There is no treaty or mutual defense pact that binds the United States with Saudi Arabia. Instead, it’s a marriage of convenience centered on oil and oil alone. The informal partnership was cemented with a dinner date more than 70 years ago on a U.S. Navy boat on the Suez Canal. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was returning from the Yalta Conference in 1945 when he stopped in Egypt to meet with some of the most important leaders from the Middle East and Africa, including King Farouk of Egypt and Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. There was also a lesser-known name on the list: The first Saudi king, Abdul Aziz ibn Saud. Ibn Saud was a charismatic military leader who beat his rivals to become the founder of modern Saudi Arabia. He was not a worldly man. The meeting on the Suez Canal was reported to be the first time he had left his kingdom. He brought eight sheep with him to the USS Quincy, where he met Roosevelt, to be slaughtered for dinner. He and Roosevelt hit it off, bonding over their shared physical ailments. They came up with an informal deal that would see the United States offer diplomatic support and military training for the then-fledgling kingdom, in return for political support in the region — and, of course, access to Saudi Arabia’s oil reserves. Saudi Arabia’s oil reserves were enormous, now believed to be second only to Venezuela, and of a higher quality than the sticky, crude stuff found there. But while Saudi Arabia had been struck years before World War II began, the kingdom was too poor to do much with it. Saudi Arabia’s traditional Western ally, Britain, was now preoccupied with its own recovery from the war. “Only the United States had the resources to help the Saudi economy cope until oil production grew sufficiently to make the Kingdom solvent,” Bruce Riedel later put it in his book “Kings and Presidents: Saudi Arabia and the United States since FDR.” In the years since 1945, this meeting has been mythologized as the beginning of a relationship of mutual benefit. Photographs of Roosevelt and Ibn Saud hang up in Saudi diplomatic outposts around the world. But in truth, there was no immediate seismic shift after the meeting. Roosevelt died only two months after he met Ibn Saud. He was replaced by Harry S. Truman, who took a more cautious view of the kingdom. Saudi oil production grew, but it didn’t make an immediate impact: Later estimates suggested that in 1950, after years of oil-backed growth, Saudi Arabia’s revenue was less than that of the average American city. When Saudi Arabia’s oil refineries did eventually boom, it wasn’t long before some Americans began to question what, exactly, the broader point of the relationship was. In 1972 and 1973, a Saudi-led oil embargo against countries supporting Israel in the Yom Kippur War targeted the United States specifically. And as Saudi Arabia grew richer, it grew more powerful. “We are reaching the point where we are more dependent upon them than they are on us,” one American diplomat told The Washington Post in 1977 amid yet another round of tensions. “No matter what good friends they are, that is an unhealthy position for us.” Outside of oil, shared interests were fleeting. When Roosevelt and Ibn Saud met in 1945, much of the discussion centered around the prospect of a Jewish state in Israel, with the Saudi leader very much opposed. But differences over the Palestinian cause would later be at the root of many disagreements. Later, both Washington and Riyadh were loose allies in the Cold War and after the Iranian revolution in 1979, the two united in opposing Tehran. Saudi Arabia became a major purchaser of U.S. military goods by the 1990s, buttressing the American arms industry with the same money it extracted through oil sales. But the Cold War ended. Saudi Arabia now finds itself aligned with Moscow for economic reasons in OPEC Plus. Meanwhile, the Biden administration is seeking to revive the nuclear agreement between Iran and other world powers and it has little interest in painting Tehran as its enemy. And since the attacks on America on Sept. 11, 2001, there has been simmering anger over Saudi Arabia’s tolerance of religious extremism. Arms sales have lost their luster, given the kingdom’s use of American weapons in its disastrous war in Yemen and the gruesome murder of Khashoggi, a U.S. resident who was well-known and well-liked in Washington. Whatever bond may have existed in the past between leaders like Roosevelt and Ibn Saud does not exist between Biden and Mohammed bin Salman. The best an American could say of his signature policy, the insane planned city of Neom, is that it serves as financial support for U.S. urban planners and technologists. Now, by pushing a production cut at OPEC Plus, Saudi Arabia isn’t just indirectly supporting Russia or pushing the world closer toward a recession — it’s shaking the very slippery, oil-based foundations of its relationship with the United States. And if Biden listens to some Democratic lawmakers, this marriage of convenience could finally be heading for a divorce.

Google Chrome May Soon Add Passkey Support: What To Expect – The Indian Express https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/google-chrome-may-soon-add-passkey-support-what-to-expect-the-indian-express/ Passkeys are also soon coming to Android in addition to Chrome. (Image Source) Passwords seem to have become less secure than they once were in recent years. This is due to a number of reasons which go from users being fooled into giving up their passwords to attackers hacking company servers and credentials being breached. With tech giants like Apple, Microsoft and Google increasingly looking to gravitate towards a password-less future, the tech seems to be now coming soon to popular browser Google Chrome. A new Android Developers blog post has now revealed that passkeys are being tested on Android and Chrome. “Passkeys are a significantly safer replacement for passwords and other phishable authentication factors. They cannot be reused, don’t leak in server breaches, and protect users from phishing attacks,” the blog mentions. Google also mentions that using a passkey is similar to using a saved password today, which users can simply “confirm with their existing device screen lock such as their fingerprint.” “Passkeys on users’ phones and computers are backed up and synced through the cloud to prevent lockouts in the case of device loss,” the blog adds. On Chrome, passkeys will be site-specific and can then be used to access sensitive information or payment platforms. Users who have authenticating methods like fingerprint scanners on a device can use that to login via passkeys. Those who do not have such a mechanism or need to log in on another computer/device will also be able to do so using the fingerprint sensor and passkey on their phone, via a quick QR code scan. The service is currently coming to the Google Play Services beta channel and Chrome Canary (a developer and testing-oriented version of the browser) and should come to more stable devices later on. © IE Online Media Services Pvt Ltd First published on: 14-10-2022 at 11:12:33 am

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man accused of stealing at least $300,000 worth of retail merchandise across the Portland metro area was arrested Tuesday, according to Tigard police. The Tigard Police Department says Austin Bailey, 35, is currently being held at Washington County Jail. He’s facing 16 criminal charges for first-degree aggravated theft, identity theft and more. Tigard PD said after recognizing Bailey as a “known shoplifting suspect” on Tuesday, a Beaverton store’s loss prevention employees reported his whereabouts to authorities. Once deputies arrived at the scene, officials say Bailey took off running on foot but was eventually caught and taken into custody. Deputies reportedly uncovered over 40 pills containing fentanyl, meth and heroin from Bailey when he was arrested. Tigard detectives say they have been investigating Bailey for nearly a year and say he has allegedly stolen from large retail stores in Washington, Clackamas, Multnomah and Clark counties. Officials say that Bailey’s arrest is “one of the most significant in recent memory when it comes to retail theft.” The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says that Bailey is likely responsible for several other open theft cases and that additional charges against Bailey are likely.

This month, CruiseCompete reported that consumers are placing a premium on cabin room service, citing it as one of their top most-desired onboard amenities when it comes to choosing their cruises. The comparison site provided a rundown of the top seven reasons that cruisegoers love having room service when they’re sailing: There is nothing that feels more indulgent than having your cabin steward awaken you with the aroma of fresh coffee and freshly-baked pastries. Families often benefit from having cabin room service available at various times of the day and night, especially those kids of various ages, not all of whom might be ‘dining-room’ ready. It can sometimes provide couples with an opportunity for some private romance alone in their cabin. While there are usually many dining options no matter what you are doing, if you’ve had a busy day, you might just need a break from fellow passengers and prefer to dine in. Sometimes guests just might like to have some food available to enjoy in the comfort of their cabin. Since children never stop being hungry, it provides parents peace of mind, knowing that in-cabin service is always available, typically 24/7. If your cabin category offers room service at any time, why not take advantage of it?! For the latest travel news, updates and deals, be sure to subscribe to the daily TravelPulse newsletter here.

The Works’ Mobile Grocer To Bring Groceries To Memphis’ Food Deserts – Commercial Appeal https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-works-mobile-grocer-to-bring-groceries-to-memphis-food-deserts-commercial-appeal/ Fresh fruits, canned goods, and reusable bags are the marks of any average grocery store, but what if instead that grocery shopping experience came to you? The Works’ grocery store on wheels, Mobile Grocer, hit the streets in North Memphis for the first time Wednesday. “I feel like a kid on Christmas, like a 6-year-old, with all of the gifts,” The Works CEO Roshun Austin said. “This is a dream in that way because for a long time… we were trying to find ways for not only our staff members and neighbors to have access [to groceries].” While the routes are still being finalized, Austin said the truck will definitely serve the Klondike, Frayser, Smokey City, and North Memphis areas. The Works will also partner with hyperlocal organizations to determine the best stops for the truck. South Memphis Development:22 homes planned for new subdivision in Trigg neighborhood Memphis grocery stores:Gordon Food Service’s first Memphis store opens in Midtown “Everything we do is about a partnership with groups and neighbors, so we’d like the voices of people who live in this place,” Austin said. The Works is a community development corporation serving the Memphis community by offering affordable housing and social services. BJ Adams was hired by The Works last year to drive the Mobile Grocer. After supply chain problems delayed the project since 2020, Adams is happy to get on the road to bring fresh foods to neighborhoods without grocery stores. “We’re just trying to find out exactly what areas we want to target first,” Adams said. “Once we get the routes configured, then we’ll do about two hours in each location… We’re going to hit some senior living facilities, maybe some areas where you don’t really have access to fruits and vegetables, as well.” The roughly 20-foot trailer is stocked wall-to-wall with every type of grocery item one might need: bread, cereal, fruits, vegetables, canned foods, plates, and cups. It also opens from the back to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. In 2010, The Works opened the South Memphis Farmers Market to fulfill a pillar of its South Memphis Revitalization Action Plan, which emphasizes healthy living by improving access to healthy foods in the community. The seasonal market with local vendors then expanded to become the brick-and-mortar store The Grocer at 1400 Mississippi Blvd. Whitehaven news:Opening delayed for new YMCA in Whitehaven. Here’s a look at where the project stands. In South Memphis:Rapper Kevo Muney provides free dental cleanings for Memphis Delta Prep students Rick James, owner and CEO of Castle Retail Group — the group behind stores including High Point Grocery and South Point Grocery, acts as The Works’ wholesaler. James and Austin have been working together for more than a decade on addressing food deserts in Memphis. “To see it, you know, see it actually come off of a sheet of paper and sitting in this parking lot is great, but the value of it being able to move throughout the city and get into neighborhoods, especially where access is limited because of transportation problems,” James said. “That’s one of the biggest things for seniors in the city is they rely on somebody else for transportation, or they rely on mass transit, which is very time-consuming, but to be able to have this show up at a parking lot in their building is just really going to be terrific.” For updates, follow The Works on Instagram.

Newberry Goal Propels Wildcats Victory Over Saints 1-0 – Central Washington University Athletics https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/newberry-goal-propels-wildcats-victory-over-saints-1-0-central-washington-university-athletics/ ELLENSBURG, Wash. – A goal from Lily Newberry late in the first half helped the Central Washington women’s soccer team defeat the Saint Martin’s Saints by a score of 1-0.   “I was happy that the girls were able to take everything we learned from last week and apply it today,” Head Coach Lindsey Lee said. “Saint Martin’s works very hard and it was nice to see us find some attacking success in the attacking third.”   In a back and forth first half, it looked like the Wildcats and Saints were going to go to halftime tied at 0-0. But, Newberry had different plans.   In the 44th minute, the ‘Cats had a corner kick. Ashley Peterson took the corner kick, sending the ball to Newberry well outside the 18-yard box. Newberry hit a screamer finding the back of the net, giving the Wildcats a late lead entering halftime.   “Lily is a great long-range goal-scorer,” Coach Lee said. “And we haven’t gotten too many looks off corners, so I was glad to see us try a different approach.”   In the second half, the Saints began to find some offensive pressure, but nothing testing the Wildcats defense to much. The Saints best opportunity came early in the second half when Maria Pagnotta had a clear shot opportunity but Kassandra Jaggard came up big, saving the shot.   Jaggard played the entire game in goal for the Wildcats, helping the team keep a shutout and logging four saves.   The Wildcats maintained their lead for the rest of the second half, preserving a 1-0 win.   CWU recorded 16 total shots on the day, six on goal. Jaxyn Farmen lead the team in shots (3). Emily Darcy, Jordan Bartlow and Newberry logged two shots each.   SCORING RECAP 44′ CWU Goal. Scored by Lily Newberry (1), assisted by Ashley Peterson. CWU 1-0 SMU.   UP NEXT The ‘Cats will honor their four seniors with a Senior Day matchup against Western Oregon this Saturday, Oct. 15, at Tomlinson Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for noon. Check back tomorrow for a story on the four seniors.   “I’m looking forward to celebrating our four seniors this coming Saturday,” Coach Lee said. Mark Zuckerbergs Meta Metaverse Legs Were Staged Decrypt
Mark Zuckerbergs Meta Metaverse Legs Were Staged Decrypt
Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta Metaverse Legs Were Staged – Decrypt https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/mark-zuckerbergs-meta-metaverse-legs-were-staged-decrypt/ It’s fair to say that nobody is more excited about Meta’s future metaverse than billionaire CEO, co-founder and chairman Mark Zuckerberg. Note his utter delight when, earlier this week, he announced “one more feature coming soon that’s probably the most requested feature on our road map.” “Legs!” he said. “I think everyone has been waiting for this!” Indeed, the addition of legs to Meta’s metaverse was what made the most headlines this week—and not the upgraded haptic and tracking features or integrated web browser of the new Quest Pro mixed reality headset. Zuckerberg explained that Meta will use an artificial intelligence model to predict and depict the positions of a user’s whole body. “But as delightful as the livestreamed reveal may have been, it appears the Horizon Worlds legs “demo” was more a “screen images simulated” moment. According to Ian Hamilton, editor of Upload VR, a Meta spokesman told him that “to enable this preview of what’s to come, the segment featured animations created from motion capture.” For those who’ve been wondering about the legs shown in the Connect keynote (@hrafntho). Meta: “To enable this preview of what’s to come, the segment featured animations created from motion capture.” — Ian Hamilton (@hmltn) October 13, 2022 Anything in a product demo deserves skepticism (“All demos lie!” reads one reply), but the apparent fabrication of a feature that has drawn a significant amount of industry commentary, snark, and competitive-trolling certainly doesn’t help the rocky rollout of what is supposed to be Meta’s signature product. At least Zuckerberg’s commentary about adding legs makes clear that doing so is a significant challenge—one that, in retrospect, he could have been saying Meta hasn’t yet solved. “Seriously, legs are hard, which is why other virtual reality systems don’t have them either,” he said, while his avatar shuffled and danced on screen. “The perceptual science behind this is actually quite interesting,” he opined. “We discovered early on that your brain is a lot more willing to accept a rendering of a part of you as long as it’s accurately positioned, but if it’s rendered in the wrong place it just feels terrible—it breaks the whole feeling of presence and immersion.” That’s why, Zuckerberg explained, early VR iterations depicted the positions of VR controllers, rather than guessing the positions of the hands and arms holding them. But for Horizon Worlds, and most VR technologies, there are no controllers or sensors for users’ feet and legs. “Understanding your leg position is surprisingly difficult because of occlusion—if your legs are under a desk or your arms block your view of them, your headset can’t see them directly,” he said. “You need to build an AI model to predict your whole body position.” As a result, the first full-body avatars will come to Horizon Worlds first, then to Meta’s other products. Some people have suggested the lack of legs is a feature, not a bug, as there is a notable increase in the amount of potential mayhem and abuse that can be simulated once the human form extends below the belt. Sadly, Meta’s Horizon Worlds has already seen its first sexual assault report. But this latest revelation of a “preview” that enlisted trusty motion capture rather than VR doesn’t help Meta’s metaverse PR problem. In October 2021, Facebook—arguably one of the biggest names in technology—bet the whole $10 billion farm on the metaverse. The company changed its name to Meta, and has since been aligning its sprawling enterprise to support Zuckerberg’s vision of a virtual social universe. Stockholders have not been impressed, however. And when Zuckerberg unveiled his cartoonish Horizon Worlds avatar in August, the instant reaction from the tech press and the public was outright mockery. While virtual worlds are not known for exceptional graphics, the debut of Meta’s visual style went so poorly, Zuckerberg rushed out updated images with more sophisticated rendering. Just last week, Meta put Horizon Worlds development on “quality lockdown,” hoping to clean up bugs and other performance issues. Internal emails suggested that even Meta employees were not using their own product. And it remains an open question as to whether Meta’s metaverse will play nicely with other metaverses or Web3 tech. Given Zuckerberg’s singular vision and zeal, Horizon Worlds will surely be only the first iteration of Meta’s future. It remains to be seen whether anyone will want to be a part of it. Zuckerberg should quit Meta. He seems disinterested in fixing its money-making platforms and he should build his dorky metaverse somewhere out of our sight where we can’t clown him for it. https://t.co/fVPUY7F4f6 — Linette Lopez (@lopezlinette) October 13, 2022 Stay on top of crypto news, get daily updates in your inbox.

Epilogue is a tech company that, back in 2021, released a nifty little gadget called the GB Operator, which when connected to a computer can run any Gameboy, Gameboy Colour and Gameboy Advance game through their own homebrew emulator. The really neat thing is that while you can play the game through the emulator, you can also save your progress and have that progress stay on the cartridge meaning that if you decide to go back to an official console, you won’t lose any progress. The Epilogue GB Operator and Studio can also be used to easily write homebrew games onto physical cartridges too, meaning it’s a good way for indie developers dabbling in demakes and retro-style games to simply make physical copies of them. This gadget was released in 2021, so why the hell am I talking about it now? WELL! Epilogue themselves posted an update on their Twitter announcing that after much testing, the GB Operator and Operator app are “fully compatible with Steam OS” with Gameboy games able to run “impeccably” on the Steam Deck. It’s official – enjoy your childhood cartridges, now on SteamDeck! Today we validated at the office that GB Operator and the Operator app are fully compatible with Steam OS and run impeccably on SteamDeck. This makes the experience fun and portable, we’re happy to support it pic.twitter.com/Ik4Pc6xPny — Epilogue (@meet_epilogue) October 13, 2022 So get this, folks: those little games that you could play as a kid on the go? You can now play them on the go again. But this time? It’s on something bigger and bustier. While there is something inherently funny about making something that was already portable once again portable but with a different flavour, this is still pretty neat. While still portable like they literally always were, your old Gameboy games can also now be played on a reasonably larger screen thanks to the GB Operator. The Steam Deck’s emulation capabilities continue to expand here, which is very cool to see. From this to the ability to recreate the experience of playing WiiU and 3DS in probably the most accurate way to date, it’s clear that the Steam Deck is becoming the most flexible console out there.

OCC’s Hsu Says Regulators Are ‘spending Too Much Time’ On Crypto: Reuters – Cointelegraph https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/occs-hsu-says-regulators-are-spending-too-much-time-on-crypto-reuters-cointelegraph/ Michael Hsu stated that it is starting to worry him that “we’re not spending that time and attention on some other things,” like fintech, which he described as the “future.” 142 Total views 2 Total shares United States Acting Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) Michael Hsu has expressed concerns that regulators are spending “too much time on crypto,” rather than more pressing issues, such as technology and banking.  The crypto skeptic OCC head made the comments during an interview with Reuters on Oct. 13, as he outlined a worry that crypto is “occupying a lot of brain space for an awful lot of people” in the regulatory community. Hsu has been at the helm of the OCC since May 2021 and serves as the administrator for the federal banking system and chief economic officer of the OCC. During his tenure, has called for greater supervision of crypto firms and standards around stablecoins, while also stressing the need for a cautious approach to crypto regulation due to “red flags” with the sector’s rapid growth. “We’re spending too much time on crypto,” he told Reuters, adding that “it’s interesting, it has thorny issues… but relative to other technology and banking issues, I think we’re now kind of overweight crypto.” Hsu went on to explain that there are other areas that need to be focused on at present, specifically relating to fintech, something which he emphasized last month required immediate oversight to avoid a “severe problem or crisis” due to the sector’s rampant expansion, adding: “The persistence of the occupation of brain space, it’s starting to worry me now that we’re not spending that time and attention on some other things.” The OCC head said he thinks fintech is the future, and therefore it needs proper time and considerations to help the sector thrive sustainably. “This is the future, so let’s do the future right,” he said. These sentiments are in stark contrast to Hsu’s views on crypto, given that he described the sector as “an immature industry based on an immature technology,” during a lecture at a Harvard Law School roundtable on Oct. 11. Related: Rep. McHenry gives progress report on stablecoin legislation, says it’s an ‘ugly baby’ Hsu also outlined concerns with the crypto sector’s apparent fear of missing out (FOMO) syndrome which he argued fosters wild speculation as opposed to innovation. “Promises of innovation and inclusion often mask crypto’s promotion of a gold rush vibe that exploits people’s fear of missing out on the next Google or Amazon.” “My skepticism of crypto stems from a frustration that the most promising innovations have been crowded out by hype and a fixation on trading,” Hsu added.

Oil Edges Up On Weaker Dollar, Low U.S. Diesel Stocks – Reuters https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/oil-edges-up-on-weaker-dollar-low-u-s-diesel-stocks-reuters/ Brent, WTI contracts on track for weekly decline Distillates draw down, U.S. crude stockpiles surge – EIA OPEC+’s output cut to keep supporting crude prices – analyst SINGAPORE, Oct 14 (Reuters) – Oil prices reversed earlier losses and inched up in Asian trade on Friday, supported by a weaker U.S. dollar and as diesel inventories fell, while Saudi Arabia and Washington continued to clash over plans by OPEC+ to slash production. Brent crude futures rose 29 cents, or 0.3%, to $94.86 per barrel by 0242 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were up 31 cents, or 0.35%, at $89.42 per barrel. Both contracts however were down for the week by about 3% after two prior weeks of gains amid recession concerns. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com “The softened U.S. dollar and the strong rebound in risk assets lifted oil prices, the rebounding momentum may continue into today’s Asian session,” said Tina Teng, an analyst at CMC Markets, as a weaker dollar usually makes dollar-denominated commodities like oil cheaper for holders of other currencies. “OPEC+’s output cut will keep supporting crude prices, along with a possible recovery in China’s demand in the fourth quarter if Beijing loosens up COVID curbs,” Teng added. China, the world’s largest crude oil importer, has been fighting a COVID rebound after its week-long National Day holiday earlier this month and just ahead of a key Communist Party Congress where President Xi Jinping is expected to extend his leadership. The country’s infection tally is small by global standards, but it adheres to a zero-COVID policy. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and the United States continued to clash over a decision by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies, known as OPEC+, last week to cut its oil production target. Saudi Arabia, OPEC’s de facto leader, rejected criticisms by Washington as “not based on facts” and that the U.S. request to delay the cut by a month would have had negative economic consequences. The White House said it presented the Saudis with an analysis that showed the reductions could hurt the global economy and alleged the Saudis pressured other OPEC members on a vote. Officials with both countries are expected to continue discussions soon. Oil prices were also supported by a steep drawdown in distillate stocks that came as heating oil demand is expected to rise as winter approaches. Distillate stockpiles (USOILD=ECI), which include diesel and heating oil, fell by 4.9 million barrels to 106.1 million barrels, their lowest since May, versus expectations for a 2 million-barrel drop, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration on Thursday. This comes amid a larger-than-expected surge in U.S. crude oil in storage, along with a rise in gasoline stocks. Crude inventories grew by 9.9 million barrels in the week to Oct. 7 to 439.1 million barrels, added the EIA, far larger than analysts’ expectations in a Reuters poll for a 1.8 million-barrel rise. “The market ignored the 10 million barrel build of U.S. crude inventories last week and focussed on a drop of 4.9 million barrels in distillate inventories ahead of heating demand,” said ANZ Research in a Friday note, adding that developments such as OPEC+’s oil output cut and Russian oil sanctions “create a perfect backdrop for volatile prices.” Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Reporting by Laila Kearney in New York and Emily Chow in Singapore; Editing by Stephen Coates and Sam Holmes Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

Reliance Jio Begins Removing All Disney+ Hotstar Bundled Plans – The Indian Express https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/reliance-jio-begins-removing-all-disney-hotstar-bundled-plans-the-indian-express/ Reliance Jio has removed all but two of its bundled streaming plans that come with a Disney+ Hotstar mobile subscription. Of the multiple bundled Disney+ Hotstar plans that Jio offered to its users at various price points, only two remain. This was spotted first by TelecomTalk, and the list of plans which have been removed so far include the Rs 499 plan, Rs 601 plan, Rs 799 plan, Rs 1,099 plan, Rs 333 plan, Rs 419 plan, Rs 583 plan, Rs 783 plan and Rs 1,199 plan, all of which are no longer available to recharge on the platform. However, users who have already recharged with one of these plans will likely be able to continue using it till the validity lasts. The Rs 1,499 plan and Rs 4,199 plan are still there and will come with bundled Disney+ Hotstar subscriptions. But it remains unclear if these plans will also be around for long. These two plans also offer a bundled Disney+ Hotstar Premium subscription and not a ‘Mobile’ subscription that limits users to 720p resolution and only one mobile device. While the Rs 1,499 plan comes with 2GB daily data for 84 days, the Rs 4,199 plan comes with 3GB daily data for 365 days. Both plans also offer unlimited calling and 100 SMS per day. Why did the Disney+ Hotstar bundled plans go down? Jio was the only telecom player offering bundled Disney+ Hotstar subscriptions, and while the company has not officially revealed the reason behind dropping support for these bundled plans, it seems the reason could be Disney+ Hotstar no longer having rights to stream the next IPL season, the rights for which have now been acquired by Viacom18. The latter is part of the Reliance Industries Limited via TV18. Disney+ Hotstar will still be streaming the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup though, and it seems those looking to buy a new recharge plan with bundled Disney+ Hotstar benefits will now have to choose between the only two Jio plans left that offer these perks.

DeSantis Changes Voting Rules For Some Counties Hit By Ian, Sparking Criticism – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/desantis-changes-voting-rules-for-some-counties-hit-by-ian-sparking-criticism-the-washington-post/ Gov. Ron DeSantis is making it easier for voters to cast ballots in three southwestern Florida counties that were hit hard by Hurricane Ian and are bastions for GOP support, sparking criticism that he is “politicizing a natural disaster.” More than 1 million voters in Charlotte, Sarasota and Lee counties will have more time to get to the polls for early voting in the upcoming general election and will have more ways to file a mail-in ballot under the order the Republican governor signed Wednesday. Some of the accommodations being offered run counter to recently enacted voting laws pushed by DeSantis and passed by the GOP-led state legislature. Among those laws is one that limits drop boxes, called “ballot intake stations” in the law. Under the order, elections supervisors in the three counties can set up new early-voting and drop-box sites. Vote-by-mail ballots can also be sent to an address other than where the voter is registered. “Tens of thousands of Floridians have been displaced, and today’s executive order fails to meet the moment and ensure voting access for all Florida voters,” Jasmine Burney-Clark, founder of the voter rights organization Equal Ground, said in a statement. “Instead, Governor DeSantis is politicizing a natural disaster.” Hurricane Ian slammed ashore as a Category 4 storm in Lee County on Sept. 28, killing over 100 people and causing upward of $75 billion in damage. The Federal Emergency Management Agency offered disaster relief to 24 of the state’s 67 counties. Wind, storm surge and flooding left a trail of destruction that stretched from Naples to St. Augustine. DeSantis’s emergency order says the decision to change the ballot rules for only three counties was made “based on the collective feedback of the Supervisors of Elections across the state and at the written requests of the Supervisors of Elections in Charlotte, Lee, and Sarasota counties.” Lee County, where Hurricane Ian made landfall, has “few viable Election Day polling places post-storm,” according to the order, and “several established polling locations no longer exist.” The Lee County elections office also reported that the hurricane “displaced countless Lee County voters and poll workers from their homes.” Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd said in a statement that his office worked with elections supervisors “to ensure that the 2022 General Election is administered as efficiently and securely as possible across the state and in the counties that received the heaviest damage.” Election Day is Nov. 8. Mail ballots are already being accepted in the state. Early-voting deadlines vary by county, but the order says early voting can begin on Oct. 24 in the three counties. Voting rights advocates have been asking for DeSantis to make allowances for voters affected by Hurricane Ian across the state. Representatives from a number of organizations, including Equal Ground, the American Civil Liberties Union, the NAACP and the Voting Rights Project, wrote a letter to Byrd and DeSantis on Tuesday asking for an emergency order to make voting easier in all 24 counties considered to be disaster areas. Some of what the groups requested — including expanding early-voting days and locations — was included in the order DeSantis signed on Wednesday, but only for three counties. More than 450,000 voters in Lee, Charlotte and Sarasota are registered as Republicans, compared with 265,000 Democrats and nearly 290,000 affiliated with no party. Overall, registered Republicans outnumber Democrats in many, but not all, of the counties damaged by the hurricane. Orange County, where Hurricane Ian passed as a Category 1 storm and left historic flooding in Orlando and surrounding areas, has 360,389 registered Democrats and 217,061 registered Republicans. It was not granted any exceptions. Burney-Clark, of Equal Ground, said by excluding the other counties affected by the storm, the order “will remain yet another example of Governor DeSantis disenfranchising voters.”

Dream Vacations and CruiseOne said resort sales are surpassing prepandemic levels, while its land business in general continues to grow. It attributed the growth to marketing programs and support offered to franchisees, including a “land brochure,” social media assets and more. The franchisor has been putting an increased emphasis on land vacations in recent years and even introduced the Dream Vacations moniker in 2016 partly because of the segment’s growth among agents. The growth in land and resort sales was announced at the Dream Vacations and CruiseOne Land Summit at the Dreams Onyx in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, which was co-hosted by Apple Leisure Group and AMResorts. The four-day training event drew more than 120 advisors.

Guardians Postponed: ALDS Game 2 Moved To Friday Over Rain Forecast – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/yankees-vs-guardians-postponed-alds-game-2-moved-to-friday-over-rain-forecast-cbs-sports/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Game 2 of the ALDS matchup between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians has been postponed due to rain and moved to Friday, MLB announced. First pitch was originally scheduled for 7:37 p.m. ET Thursday night, though the forecast calls for rain most of the day Thursday and continuing into the early morning hours Friday. Instead, Game 2 will now be played Friday at 1:07 p.m. ET (still airing on TBS). Here is Thursday’s weather forecast around Game 2’s original scheduled start time (via CBS News New York). The heaviest rain is expected to hit New York right around what would’ve been first pitch. Heavy rain is expected to hit New York during Game 2. CBS News New York The Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies waited out a three-hour rain delay prior to playing Game 2 on Wednesday, though the Yankees and Guardians do not have a similar playable window coming their way Thursday, so the game was postponed. Friday was originally an ALDS off-day, so rescheduling Game 2 was a piece of cake. However, the postponement does force the two teams to play Games 2-5 on four consecutive days (if Games 4 and 5 are necessary). Friday was the final scheduled off-day in the series. Here’s how the Game 2 postponement impact each team’s pitching plans. The Yankees won Game 1 behind Gerrit Cole and Anthony Rizzo. They lead the best-of-five series 1-0. Game 2’s scheduled starters are All-Star lefty Nestor Cortes (12-4, 2.44 ERA) and 2020 AL Cy Young winner Shane Bieber (13-8, 2.88 ERA).
