The update put the percentage inside the battery icon, and iOS 16.1 makes the numbers larger and easier to see. Below, you can see the icons before and after in light and dark modes. 2. Battery Percentage for More iPhones While iOS 16.0 lets us add the battery percentage to the battery icon in the status bar on Face ID devices, it’s not available on all Face ID models. Specifically, the iPhone XR, 11, 12 mini, and 13 mini are left out, presumedly because of their smaller displays. The iOS 16.1 update adds support for those models, so now all iPhone models that can run iOS 16 can get the new battery icon. 3. Clean Energy Charging Go to Settings – Battery, then open up the “Battery Health & Charging” menu, previously just “Battery Health,” and you’ll see a new option called “Clean Energy Charging.” Apple says your iPhone “will try to reduce your carbon footprint by selectively charging when lower carbon emission electricity is available.” It goes on to say your iPhone “learns from your daily charging routine so it can reach full charge before you need to use it.” The setting should be automatically enabled by default, but the “Learn More” link goes to a non-existing webpage, which should go live when iOS 16.1 stable is released. 4. Live Activities Live Activities are finally here. They appear on the bottom of your iPhone’s lock screen, as well as in the Dynamic Island for the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max models, and display an app’s most current data, updated in real time. Live sports games in the Apple TV app is one example of what Live Activities can do. Pick a live game available in your region from the Live Sports section, then tap the “Follow” button. You’ll then see the play-by-play and real-time scores on your lock screen and in the Dynamic Island if you have an iPhone 14 Pro or 14 Pro Max. Right now, I can only get it to work with MLB games. According to Apple, a Live Activity can only be active for up to eight hours in the Dynamic Island, but it can go as long as 12 hours on the lock screen. So on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, a Live Activity would disappear from the Dynamic Island after eight hours but remain on your lock screen for up to four more hours. Needless to say, you can stop following a Live Activity at any time. There are also four different viewing modes for Live Activities in the Dynamic Island: a compact leading view, a compact trailing view, a minimal view, and an expanded view. 5. Live Activities API Live Activities aren’t just available for Apple’s apps — any third-party developer can incorporate them into their apps using the new ActivityKit framework. Examples of activities you could track include a ride pickup from Uber or Lyft, package delivery from UPS or FedEx, food delivery from GrubHub or DoorDash, pickup order for Starbucks or Target, workout using Nike or Health, and so on. While developers are now building Live Activities for their apps, you won’t be able to try any out until the iOS 16.1 stable release appears. That’s because developers can’t submit their updated apps with Live Activities to the App Store until the iOS 16.1 Release Candidate is available, the last beta build. You may be able to find beta apps on TestFlight that are experimenting with Live Activities. 6. Download In-App Content Before First Launching Apps There’s a new toggle in Settings – App Store for “In-App Content,” which will “automatically run apps in the background to download content before you first launch them” when enabled. You’ll notice the change mostly in games and navigation apps that need a lot of resources to run correctly. The App Store has file size limits, but developers can push the required resources after the initial app installation. It is unclear if the feature only applies during the app’s initial installation or if it can also install new in-app content in the background after manually or automatically installing an app update. Subscribe to Fitness+ Without Apple Watch Before iOS 16.1, you had to have an Apple Watch to subscribe to Fitness+ in the Fitness app. Now, you don’t need one, but you’d be missing out on all the health and fitness metrics displayed on the Apple Watch during a workout. If you don’t care about that data and just want to follow along to a workout session, Fitness+ is now a viable option. 8. New Shortcut Actions The iOS 16.0 update added almost 60 new actions in the Shortcuts app, and iOS 16.1 throws a few more in. The emotion in the air was palpable as conservationists got ready for a moment that so many had been working toward for months. But the joyous moment was also bittersweet. Preliminary plans for a massive wind farm that could be located in the Somuncura Plateau to feed a green hydrogen project is putting at risk a three-decade-long effort to repopulate Patagonia’s Atlantic coast with a bird that is classified as vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.While members of the Mapuche, the largest Indigenous group in the area, played traditional instruments, and children threw condor feathers into the air that symbolized their good wishes for the newly liberated birds, an eerie silence engulfed the mountain in Sierra Paileman in Rio Negro province as researchers opened the cages where the two specimens of the world’s largest flying bird were kept. Huasi (meaning home in Quechua) seemed born for this moment. As soon as the cage opened, he spread his wings and took off without a moment’s hesitation. Yastay (meaning god that is protector of birds) appeared cautious, uncertain of the wide open Patagonia skies after spending his first two years in captivity, and it took him around an hour before taking off. People hugged while researchers sprang into action and started tracking the birds. In the back of their minds were latent worries about what the potential for new wind farms in the area could mean for the lives of these newly released birds.Conservationists fear the birds inevitably would collide with the rotating blades of the turbines and be killed. In neighboring Chile, an environmental impact study for a planned wind farm with 65 windmills concluded that as many as four of the rare condors could collide with the massive structures yearly. Environmental authorities rejected the project last year. “Why are we freeing two? We generally free more than two,” Vanesa Astore, executive director of the Andean Condor Conservation Program, said. “We’re at like a maintenance level now.”Researchers had to release Huasi and Yastay now or risk that they would have to remain in captivity for the rest of their lives, which can range from 70 to 80 years, Astore explained, noting condors can only adapt to the outside world if they are released before their third birthday. The current uncertainty regarding the future of the wind farm that would be built by Australian firm Fortescue Future Industries has not only put conservationists on alert but has prompted them to slow the pace of reproduction and release of the Andean condors even as the company insists it has no plans to set up shop in the Somuncura Plateau. Condors are notoriously slow breeders that only reach sexual maturity at 9 years old and have an offspring every three years, but researchers have found ways to speed that up by removing eggs from pairs in captivity to incubate artificially. When the egg is removed, the pair will then produce another egg within a month, which they will raise while the first one is raised by humans with the help of latex puppets meant to simulate their parents and help them recognize members of their own species. That strategy allow researchers to “increase reproductive capacity by six times,” said Luis Jacome, the head of the Andean Condor Conservation Program. That effort is now on pause.“We aren’t maximizing because I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Astore explained. Since the conservation program started 30 years ago, 81 chicks have been born in captivity, 370 condors have been rehabilitated and 230 freed across South America, including Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile and Bolivia. Sixty-six of those have been released along Patagonia’s Atlantic coast, where the bird was nowhere to be seen at the turn of the century even though Charles Darwin had written in the early 1800s about the presence of the large birds in the region. The Andean condor has now made a comeback, and for many locals that has a spiritual resonance.“The condor flies very high, so our elders used to say that the condor could take a message to those who are no longer here,” said Doris Canumil, 59, a Mapuche who took part in the ceremonies for the liberation of the condors. While they celebrate the success of the program, conservationists worry it could all be erased. “These birds that we’ve liberated, that once again joined the mountain range with the sea through their flight, that have matured and had their own offspring that live and fly here in this place, they will simply die in the blades of the windmills,” Jacome said. “So the condor would once again become extinct in the Atlantic coast.” Conservationists found out about the proposed wind farm through the media and alarm bells immediately went off. Last year, Fortescue unveiled a plan to invest $8.4 billion over a decade in a project to produce green hydrogen for export in what the government touted as the largest international investment in Argentina over the past two decades. In order to qualify as green, the hydrogen must be produced using renewable power, and that is where the windmill farm would come in, taking advantage of the strong, reliable winds of Patagonia. The government of President Alberto Fernández celebrated the project, saying it would create 15,000 direct jobs and somewhere between 40,000 and 50,000 indirect jobs. Yet neither the company nor the provincial government of Rio Negro had carried out an environmental impact study before unveiling the project. For now at least, Jacome said, the “only thing green are the dollars” attached to the project.“We’re putting the cart before the horse,” Jacome said. “We need to have environmental impact studies that demonstrate what is going to be done, how many windmills, where they will be placed.” Fortescue agrees and says it “is committed to evaluating the social, environmental, engineering, and economic considerations before committing to the development” of any project. The Australian firm said in a statement that any pre-development study will include consultations with local organizations to “guarantee the protection of the local species such as the Andean Condor.” Following questions about the project, Fortescue has decided to not measure winds at the Somuncura Plateau until the province finishes its environmental plan and will instead explore “other areas of interest within lands near Sierra Grande and the Province of Chubut,” the company said. On Oct. 11, the Rio Negro provincial government said Fortescue launched a 12-month effort to analyze the environmental and social impacts of the project.Provincial officials see the number of jobs attached to the project as key. “On the one hand, we have to preserve and take care of our fauna,” Daniel Sanguinetti, Rio Negro’s planning and sustainable development secretary, said. But the government also must “promote the development of the 750,000 Rio Negro citizens who currently live (here) and generate sources of production and genuine work for all of them.” Sanguinetti added it was important “not to get carried away by different situations that supposedly would happen at some time in the future when all of this would have been implemented, when the reality is that the project is in its initial phases.”For those who have made repopulating the Patagonia coast with the condor their life’s work, the discussions over the future of the project are deeply personal. “We feel a little bit like parents,” said Catalina Rostagno, who moved to the base camp in Rio Negro two and a half months ago for the process of liberating Huasi and Yastay. “The condor is a reflection of me.”

It has been a busy Congress in terms of being recognized by Nevada Broadcasters, the Farm Bureau, the Nevada Cattlemen’s Association, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), and the National Firearm Industry Association (NSSF), and being endorsed by the NRA, National Right to Life, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Veterans In Politics International, and the Public Safety Alliance of Nevada, which represents nearly 100 law enforcement organizations and nearly 10,000 police officers throughout Nevada. I have run one of the most effective oversight operations on the Executive Branch, returned over $20 million dollars in benefits withheld by the federal government back to constituents through a robust, Nevada-first constituent services operation, aided in the evacuation of American allies from Afghanistan, and assisted veterans in receiving rightfully-earned treatments through the VA. On the Appropriations Committee, I have preserved funding for the construction of the Border Wall, border patrol, law enforcement, and the military. I also proudly voted for the Honoring Our PACT Act, which has been signed into law and will provide burn pit compensation for veterans. These are all things you earn every day, not a one hit and out. I believe this record of success is indicative of a pro-constituent, pro-Nevada focus each and every day. Republicans have blamed high inflation on massive government spending. Do you stand by your vote for the CARES Act, and how do you plan to continue addressing inflation in Northern Nevada if retained by voters? I have no problem with my vote for the CARES Act in March 2020 that provided states with the reasonable tools to deal with an unknown and unprecedented health emergency. However, under the Biden Administration, an additional $4.7 Trillion dollars in stimulus packages have been pursued by overwhelming Democratic support. For example, less than 9% of the nearly $2 Trillion-dollar “American Rescue Plan Act” went to coronavirus public health spending. The latest Biden Administration “victory” came with the so-called “Inflation Reduction Act,” which will provide funding for a new army of 87,000 additional IRS agents, funding for climate justice, and the expansion of Obamacare. This irresponsible spending by this Democratic-controlled White House and Congress has been a fundamental disruption to the economy, job market, and supply chain, and have been loaded up with woke, Green New Deal agendas which have hurt every middle class working American in the country and the pain will continue. While these political agendas may have allowed governors and elected officials attempts to buy votes, it is a short term, ill-conceived, and fundamentally harmful solution for keeping this country strong and prosperous. What will ensure American economic and national security is a prioritizing energy independence, eliminating woke environmental policies, reducing burdensome taxes, and encouraging innovation in the private sector to grow jobs and businesses. What can Congress do to address housing affordability in your district? If local governments in Nevada can get together on what they think a consensus lands package is, the most obvious first step is to provide federal lands in and around our cities and towns for real property on which to construct or whose sale proceeds can help pay for affordable projects. Saad Ibrahim Almadi, a 72-year-old retired project manager living in Florida, was arrested last November while visiting family in the kingdom and was sentenced earlier this month, his son Ibrahim told The Associated Press, confirming details that were first reported by the Washington Post. Almadi is a citizen of both Saudi Arabia and the U.S. There was no immediate comment from Saudi officials. State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel, speaking to reporters in Washington, confirmed Almadi’s detention Tuesday. “We have consistently and intensively raised our concerns regarding the case at senior levels of the Saudi government, both through channels in Riyadh and Washington DC as well and we will continue to do so,” he said. “We have raised this with members of the Saudi government as recently as yesterday.” It appeared to be the latest in a series of recent cases in which Saudis received long jail sentences for social media posts critical of the government. Saudi authorities have tightened their crackdown on dissent following the rise of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is seeking to open up and transform the ultraconservative kingdom but has adopted a hard line toward any criticism. A Saudi court recently sentenced a woman to 45 years in prison for allegedly damaging the country through her social media activity. A Saudi doctoral student at Leeds University in England was sentenced to 34 years for spreading “rumors” and retweeting dissidents, a case that drew international outrage. Ibrahim says his father was detained over 14 “mild tweets” posted on Twitter over the past seven years, mostly criticizing government policies and alleged corruption. He says his father was not an activist but a private citizen expressing his opinion while in the U.S., where freedom of speech is a constitutional right. President Joe Biden traveled to the oil-rich kingdom in July for a meeting with Prince Mohammed, in which he said he confronted him about human rights. Their meeting — and a widely criticized fist-bump — marked a sharp turnaround from Biden’s earlier vow to make the kingdom a “pariah” over the 2018 killing of Saudi journalist and Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi. Ibrahim said his father was sentenced to 16 years in prison on Oct. 3 on charges of supporting terrorism. The father was also charged with failing to report terrorism, over tweets that Ibrahim had posted. His father was also slapped with a 16-year travel ban. If the sentence is carried out, the 72-year-old would be 87 upon his release and barred from returning home to the U.S. unless he reaches the age of 104. Ibrahim said Saudi authorities warned his family to stay quiet about the case and to not involve the U.S. government. He said his father was tortured after the family contacted the State Department in March. Ibrahim also accused the State Department of neglecting his father’s case by not declaring him a “wrongfully detained” American, which would elevate his file. “They manipulated me. His shot in the top of the sixth inning of Game 1 of the NLCS against Padres starter Yu Darvish, however, was his first postseason homer with the Phillies.  Schwarber more than got his money’s worth. Mammoth? This thing in the Phillies’ 2-0 win was titanic.  As noted in the tweet, that was 488 feet. It was a ridiculous 119.7 miles per hour. Let’s take a look at Schwarber’s teammate Bryce Harper — who homered earlier in the game — for the proper reaction to that herculean blast:  According to Major League Baseball, as long as they’ve been tracking distances, this marked the longest home run ever in Petco Park. Also, this was the hardest-hit postseason home run in the Statcast (2015) era, topping a 2020 Giancarlo Stanton bomb.  That ball is now safe, however, as it is in the hands of someone who won’t hurt it quite as much as Schwarber’s bat just did.  Schwarber led the NL with 46 home runs in the regular season after hitting 32 in just 113 games last season. In his time with the Cubs, he homered six times in 66 postseason at-bats, including a few famous ones, most notably one on top of the right-field videoboard against the Cardinals in the 2015 NLDS. Last year with the Red Sox, he hit three homers in 44 at-bats, including a grand slam in Game 3 of the ALCS against the Astros. Through two series this season, however, he had gone 1 for 20 with eight strikeouts.  Schwarber walked and singled before his home run in Game 1 of the NLCS Tuesday, so maybe he’s starting to get on track. That would be bad news for the Padres.

Called “5G: The Next Wave,” the Ericsson ConsumerLab report addresses the impact 5G has had on early adopter consumers since launching in various countries, as well as gauging the intention of non-5G subscribers to take up the technology – and their related expectations. The report forecasts that at least 30 per cent of smartphone users intend to take up a 5G subscription within the next year. The mix of Ericsson tracking data covering 5G launches since 2019, and the new consumer survey, has enabled Ericsson ConsumerLab to identify six key trends impacting the next wave of 5G adoption. The trends are that 5G adoption is inflation resilient. According to it, at least 510 million consumers across 37 markets are likely to take up 5G in 2023. Secondly, there is the next wave of users, who are demanding. Ericsson said the next wave of 5G users has high expectations of the performance of the technology, especially network coverage, compared to early adopters — who care about new innovative services enabled by 5G. Ericsson observed thirdly that perceived 5G availability is emerging as the new satisfaction benchmark among consumers. It noted that geographical coverage, indoor/outdoor coverage, and congregation hot-spot coverage are more important to building a user perception than population coverage. Fourtly, 5G is pushing up the usage of enhanced video and augmented reality. The Swedish firm said over the past two years, time spent on AR apps by 5G users has doubled to two hours per week. Ericsson is also of the view that 5G monetisation models are expected to evolve. According to it, six in 10 consumers expect 5G offerings to move beyond more data volume and speeds to on-demand tailored network capabilities for specific needs. On the sixth key trend, 5G adoption is setting the path to the metaverse. Ericsson claimed that 5G users on average are already spending one hour more per week on metaverse-related services than 4G users. They also expect two hours of more video content will be consumed weekly on mobile devices, 1.5 hours of which will be on AR/VR glasses by 2025. Largely, the report also addresses the speed of mainstream 5G adoption, whether consumer demands are being met, and 5G-related changes in smartphone behaviour – and their impact on network traffic. More than 49,000 consumers in 37 countries were interviewed in the research – the largest global 5G-related consumer survey in the industry to date and the largest consumer survey conducted by Ericsson on any topic. The survey scope is representative of the opinions of about 1.7 billion consumers worldwide, including 430 million 5G subscribers. Head of Ericsson ConsumerLab, Jasmeet Singh Sethi, said: “The scale of the research gives us an authentic insight into consumers’ views and attitudes to 5G. The report showed that the next wave of potential 5G users has different expectations from the technology compared to early adopters. Overall, consumers see engaging with 5G as an essential part of their future lifestyles.” He added: “It is interesting to note that 5G is emerging as an important enabler for early adopters to embrace metaverse-related services, such as socializing, playing and buying digital items in interactive 3D virtual gaming platforms. The CoinDesk Market Index, a broad-based market index that measures the performance of a basket of cryptocurrencies, fell by 0.35% over the past 24 hours. “Crypto is locked into consolidation mode and that will continue until investors are convinced of the risks of the Fed over-tightening and sending the economy into a severe recession are gone,” Edward Moya, senior market analyst for foreign exchange market maker Oanda wrote in an email. Crypto prices countered equity markets, which rose for a second consecutive day with the tech-heavy Nasdaq, S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) all climbing about a percentage point amid encouraging third quarter earnings reports from several global brands, including Goldman Sachs, which said profits had dropped but surpassed targets. The investment bank has ramped up its interest in crypto over the past year. In late-breaking crypto news venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) said that it is not on board with the founder’s vision to break up MakerDAO, one of crypto’s largest decentralized finance protocols, into smaller units. And three trade groups representing a wide swath of the crypto industry filed an amicus brief supporting a Grayscale Investments lawsuit against the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for rejecting the firm’s proposal for a spot bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded fund. Is bitcoin correlated with stocks? Evidence Tuesday, as CoinDesk reported, suggests the assets’ close proximity throughout much of 2022 has diminished lately. According to IntoTheBlock, a crypto data and analysis firm, the 30-day correlation between bitcoin and the S&P 500 has fallen to 0.04 – basically nothing because a correlation near 0 suggests no price linkage whatsoever. “It’s still too early to call for the end of the highly correlated regime, but investors are likely to get a better feel for this following the Microsoft, Google, Apple and Amazon earnings release next week,” said Lucas Outumuro, head of research at IntoTheBlock. Solana launched last year at the height of a bull market when DeFi was just popping off. Ethereum was slow, expensive, and congested, making perfect market conditions for a speedy and low-cost alternative. Aptos is launching at a time when the only concerns about the price of gas involve petroleum, not the virtual metaphor, according to on-chain data. The average price of gas for a transaction is now $27 versus over $100 from the end of October 2021. But Solana, despite its speed, is lacking in something Ethereum has: trust. Data from DefiLlama shows that Solana only has around 1.7% of the Total Value Locked (TVL) for all of decentralized finance (DeFi). Part of this is from the number of bad actors that have emerged on Solana. Ethereum certainly has its share, but given the sheer scale of the protocol, it doesn’t have the same high profile. There’s Ian and Dylan Macalinao, who faked the size of the developer community on Solana by posing as 11 different developers. Then there’s Avraham Eisenberg, part of a group that drained $114 million from Solana-based DeFi platform Mango Markets last week before returning $67 million, not by hacking but by exploiting vulnerabilities in the market structure. All of the aforementioned have said that they have interest in moving over to Aptos. Lots of attention is going to be paid to Aptos’ first day of trading, with traders pushing the token down by nearly 34% during its first hour of trading, according to CoinGecko data. Many aren’t happy about the tokenomics of the protocol, which has the majority of tokens sitting with VCs and core developers, who are eagerly taking to the derivatives contracts available from Binance to short the protocol. But if there’s one thing that’s working as advertised, it’s the transactions per second on Aptos. Data from block explorers shows that the TPS has already surged past 25, and has been climbing in its first few hours. Solana is currently processing just over 4,000, but these are early days. Let’s hope that the brand confusion with Apricot Finance, which also has the APT ticker, subsides. Almadi’s imprisonment was first reported by The Washington Post. Ibrahim Almadi told CNN on Tuesday that if his father had been held in Russia or Iran, “we’d see his name in the headlines every morning.” State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said at a news briefing that officials have “consistently and intensively raised our concerns regarding the case at senior levels of the Saudi government, both through channels in Riyadh and Washington, DC, as well … as recently as yesterday.” Patel also confirmed that there was no State Department official at Almadi’s sentencing hearing, which he said was because the Saudi government moved up the hearing date without telling the US embassy and never responded to the embassy’s request to attend the hearing weeks before it was originally scheduled. Presumably, she won’t be on the run from the law like Clark Griswold was. But she won’t be dawdling to soak in the gravitas of Arlington National Cemetery, the Lincoln Memorial, the National Mall and the U.S. Capitol, either. The 25-year-old former star distance runner at Mohonasen High School and UAlbany is making the big jump to the marathon distance for the first time, and has given herself an ambitious but attainable finish goal of 2:50 at the 47th Marine Corps Marathon. The UAlbany record holder in the 10,000 meters who won the MVP Health Care Stockade-athon 15k last year and in 2019 has visited D.C. just once, on a family vacation when she was in middle school. She’s looking forward to a marathon debut in which her wristwatch won’t be the only source of engagement. “It’s a pretty cool spot. I think it’ll hopefully help take my mind off the pain at some point,” she said with a laugh during a phone interview last Thursday. Udvadia, who married former UAlbany teammate Ryan Udvadia this year and works as a hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey, has been training for the Marine Corps Marathon for four months while coached by her father, Mohonasen cross country coach Bill Sherman. Cara believes she’s well-equipped for Oct. 30 based on how her overall training has progressed, which has included a long run of 22 miles five weeks ago and another 22-miler the second week of October. The first one was a valuable revelation; the recent one went much better. “That’s probably the first time throughout this training block that really opened my eyes to how challenging the marathon can be,” she said. “And I wasn’t having a great day. I knew from the start of that run, I don’t know what it was, but I was feeling a little bit tired. “It was a huge mental challenge from about 15 miles on. I was really struggling. I had Ryan on the bike with me. He was super-supportive, and that helped, for sure. I don’t know if I could’ve made it through without him.” “I told her, I remember when I was preparing for my first marathon, they always say the halfway point of that 26-mile race is the 20-mile mark,” said Bill Sherman, who has run nine marathons. “And it’s true. I was like, that’s a bunch of baloney, and I ran it and was like, ‘Oh, my goodness.’ “She had a 20-miler a few weeks before and she said Dad I felt great, I’m ready, I think I could’ve done 26.’ She went to 22 and was like, ‘I think I understand what you were talking about at the halfway point.’” To hit her target time, Udvadia will have to maintain a 6:29 mile pace. She posted the same time, 54:24, in her two Stockade-athon victories, which is a 5:51 pace for 9.3 miles, and in some shorter races this year, she has run sub-6:00 pace in the Firecracker 4 (23:33 for four miles) and Malta 10k (36:28) on Sept. 10. To get a taste of a race longer than the Stockade-athon, Udvadia ran the Helderberg-to-Hudson Half Marathon in April, and won it in 1:17:01, a 5:53 pace, before she had begun her serious training block for the Marine Corps. “I always knew that I would eventually move up [in distance],” she said. “After I finished running competitively in college last year, I felt like I needed some time to catch my breath and took a little down time and then spent some time road racing. This year, I felt like I was ready to make the jump. “I decided to take it kind of slow and started with a half marathon with the mindset that that would be setting me up for a fall marathon. It was a good experience. It was tough, jumping up in distance.” The popular Capital Region 26.2-miler, the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon on Oct. 9, was a logical spot for her debut, but Udvadia chose to get out of town, and there is some family history at the D.C. race, too. Ryan, who is also in good shape and will race Marine Corps, had run it with his grandfather. “I really wanted to do one that was not in the area for my first one,” Cara said. “A marathon’s a long distance, and doing it in a familiar area, I didn’t want to get bored, if that makes sense. “I wanted to also race some new people and challenge myself with that. Ryan told me good things about it. I wanted to look for something that would definitely push me, and other women to run with was really important to me. Looking at the past results, it definitely fit the bill. It looked like I would be in the mix, but definitely by no means the fastest. I felt like that would be a good way to push myself.” The women’s winner at Marine Corps typically runs in the 2:40s, and former Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake star Sam Roecker won the MHR Marathon in 2:52:17. The Marine Corps Marathon starts and finishes in Arlington, Virginia, crosses two bridges over the Potomac River and passes many of the iconic tourist sights in Washington. The course is mostly flat, but has some uphill in the early miles and another hill that begins a gentle ascent at the Mile 21 mark and gets steeper in Mile 23. The learning process is two-fold for Udvadia this year, how to train for a marathon, and how to race one. “That’s funny,” she said, when told that her father described her target time as “aggressive.” “It’s hard for me to say. Obviously, I never ran a marathon before, and I don’t want to underestimate it, because I know it’s going to be extremely challenging. “But I think it’s very do-able if I run smart in the beginning and don’t go out too fast. I know he thinks it’s more aggressive than I probably do, but he’s also more experienced with marathoning than I am, so I definitely learned some lessons during training, doing long runs past where I’ve gone before. It made me realize that it’ll be harder than I expect, probably, so it’s good to go in prepared for that.” “Her training has been going really well, and she seems really strong,” Bill Sherman said. “I think it’s a lot to manage when you’re all of a sudden working full-time.  “She’s got a pretty aggressive goal for this first one. I think it’s aggressive, and if she can do it, it’s going to be amazing. I have her at certain pacing for her tempo runs, and she says, ‘Dad, it feels so slow,’ but you’re doing 12 miles of tempo. All the pacing is based on her goal time. And it’s going well, but you don’t know until you step on the line and cross the finish line.” Balancing time-consuming marathon training with a full-time job is also part of the challenge for Udvadia. She and Ryan live in Clifton Park, and her work with the USGS occasionally requires travel to all corners of the state to collect water samples for lab analysis. “It’s also held me accountable to take a day off every week, which I usually follow that type of plan,” Cara said. “This has forced me to do that. When you work a 12-plus-hour day, it’s hard to find time to run, so if that happens once a week, it’s not a bad thing for my training, to be honest.” Udvadia said she’ll run the Stockade-athon again on Nov. 13 as long as it doesn’t present a risk of injury while she recovers from Marine Corps. She’s committed to her new distance, though, and, based on her training and affinity for longer distances, the Oct. 30 race will be anything but a sight-seeing opportunity. “I don’t want to jinx myself, but I’ve been able to hit the pace, no problem, in training, so I think when race day comes around, I’ll have been resting up a little bit the week before and my legs will probably feel better than they do on an average day, with the race atmosphere,” she said.. “I find that the first time I do a new workout or distance or a new race, it’s a lot more challenging the first time. I’m trying to keep that in mind for the first time I race the marathon, knowing it’s probably not going to go smoothly. “But I’ll have plenty more tries after this.” CATCHING UP WITH … … The Evans family. The move marks the latest sign of weakness among some of the largest U.S. tech companies amid persistent inflation, recession fears and stock market woes. This year, shares of Microsoft have fallen nearly 30%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index, meanwhile, has fallen more than 31%. The job cuts announced by Microsoft on Monday came across different positions, levels and geographic regions, Microsoft confirmed. “Like all companies, we evaluate our business priorities on a regular basis, and make structural adjustments accordingly,” the company told ABC News in a statement. “We will continue to invest in our business and hire in key growth areas in the year ahead.” Axios first reported the layoffs. While significant, the job losses announced on Monday affected less than one half of one percent of the company’s 221,000 employees worldwide. The cuts followed a round of layoffs in July that impacted less than 1% of the company’s workforce. The most recent quarterly earnings released by Microsoft, in July, fell short of investor expectations, recording $51.9 billion in revenue compared with an expected $52.4 billion, according to Bloomberg. Prior to this year, Microsoft saw blockbuster growth during the pandemic, as consumers and businesses turned to its products amid a spike in time spent at home. Between March 2020 and December 2021, Microsoft’s stock price rose about 107%. This year, however, an economic slowdown and a continued shift back to some pre-pandemic consumer habits has hurt many tech companies. Shares of cloud-computing competitor Amazon have fallen about 30% this year, while shares of Facebook-parent Meta have dropped 61%. Now the first Rolls-Royce he ever owned is hitting the auction block, and all the proceeds are going toward a good cause.   RM Sotheby’s is offering up the singer’s 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow during a sale on November 5. The former Queen frontman was said to have owned the car from 1979 until his death in 1991 at age 45. After his passing, the Rolls-Royce was scooped up by his sister, Kashmira Cooke, and remained in her possession until 2013 when it was bought at auction. Next month, the ‘74 Shadow will cross the block again, but this time the money from the sale will benefit Superhumans Center, a charity that’s providing aid for Ukrainian war victims. The 1974 Silver Shadow was the first Rolls-Royce that Freddie Mercury ever owned “This car represents a serious piece of history and the fact that the proceeds of the sale will benefit the amazing Superhumans of Ukraine charity is wonderful,” says Nick Wiles, a car specialist at RM Sotheby’s. Despite never having a license, that didn’t stop Mercury from amassing quite the class car collection. In fact, the Silver Shadow is reportedly what he was often chauffeured in throughout his career and even where the band’s record label signing took place. The company tweeted that its development team had managed to stop the hacker. BitKeep also tweeted that it had suspended the Swap service to prevent any further security breaches. Blockchain security and analytics data company PeckShield stated that the hackers had exploited the swap/router of the multi-chain wallet – integrating several features in one location.  PeckShield informed BitKeep investors that they should use its Revoke.Cash platform to ensure they do their part in preventing hackers from stealing any other funds. The blockchain security company discovered that the hacker had transferred 190 tokens via the Binance Smart Chain network. Fortunately for investors, BitKeep is adamant about keeping investor funds safe. While several hacked crypto companies haven’t compensated investors for losses, BitKeep is taking a different approach. BitKeep Wallet tweeted that users’ assets are secure and those that suffered losses in the Swap security incident will be fully compensated. The wallet provider will launch a compensation portal within 3 working days for victims to apply for a refund. The provider also stated that it will compensate 100% of the stolen assets. Crypto investors have every right to feel jittery about their assets because 2022 has proved to be a doozy. Reports reveal that crypto hackers have looted over $3 billion. If that wasn’t bad enough, October has set the record for the highest total amount hacked in one month. It’s believed that more than $700 million has been stolen from DeFi protocols in October. Both the appeal, made directly to the United States, and the U.S. response marked a rare moment of agreement between the two governments — although the Biden administration made clear that its assistance would not go to the Cuban government, but would be funneled through nongovernmental international organizations. “We stand with the Cuban people as they work to recover from this disaster,” spokesperson Ned Price said in a statement. “The United States will continue to monitor and assess humanitarian needs in coordination with our trusted partners and the international community, and we will continue to seek ways to provide meaningful support to the Cuban people, consistent with U.S. laws and regulations.” The assistance, Price said, would be provided indirectly, through the U.S. Agency for International Development, to international relief organizations such as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies “who have a long presence in hurricane-affected communities.” Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez quickly expressed appreciation on Twitter, saying that the U.S. aid would “contribute to our recovery efforts and support by those affected by the ravages” of the storm. The western third of the island took a direct hit from Hurricane Ian before it traveled toward the U.S. mainland. Cuba suffered an islandwide loss of electricity, floods and extensive damage. Cuba was already in the midst of a major economic crisis, including shortages of food and fuel that have brought people across the country into the streets in peaceful protests of both the privation, and the apparent inability of their government to address it. Cuba suffered an earlier natural disaster, just weeks before the hurricane, when lightning hit a major oil storage facility in Matanzas, east of Havana, causing a massive blaze that burned for days, contributing to fuel shortages. Ex-Clark County Public Administrator Robert Telles stood in court with his shackled hands clasped tightly, appearing to plead silently for freedom while his defense attorney, Edward Kane, argued that Telles was “a danger to no one” and would show up for future court appearances. Kane noted that Telles’ wife and mother were in the court gallery to show support for him. The women declined to comment after the hearing. Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Karen Bennett-Haron decided she was unconvinced — at least ahead of Telles’ preliminary hearing, Oct. 26. Telles, 45, a Democrat, lost his party primary in June and has been stripped by court order of his position heading the county office that handles assets of people who die without a will or family contacts. He was arrested Sept. 7, several days after the Sept. 2 stabbing death of Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German outside German’s home. Telles is being held without bail at the Clark County jail. Prosecutor Christopher Hamner said Telles, 45, could face the death penalty and noted that Telles allegedly injured himself before his arrest in what police characterized as a failed suicide attempt. Evidence against Telles is overwhelming, Hamner said, including DNA believed to be from Telles found beneath German’s fingernails; neighborhood video showing a man believed to be Telles walking near German’s home the morning of the killing; and a vehicle believed to be Telles’ in the area. German, 69, was widely respected for his tenacity, and his colleagues said he was working on follow-up reports about Telles and the public administrator’s office when he was killed. “The motive for this murder is abundantly clear,” Hamner told Bennett-Haron. “(Telles) went after the guy who ruined his life.” A separate case is unfolding before a state court judge over concerns about revealing German’s confidential sources and notes. The Review-Journal, with backing from dozens of media organizations including The Associated Press and The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, argues that police, prosecutors and defense attorneys should not be able to access German’s cellphone and electronic devices. The newspaper cites Nevada’s so-called “news shield law,” which is among the strictest in the nation, along with the federal Privacy Protection Act and First Amendment safeguards. Clark County District Court Judge Susan Johnson last week blocked immediate review of the devices, but said she will consider letting a court-approved third party screen them for relevance.
