A new report, based on travel data sets from insights company GWI, shows the travel sector is continuing to see a strong post-pandemic rebound. It reveals that 57 percent of U.S. consumers are planning an overseas vacation within the next 12 months and 86 percent also eyeing a domestic trip.
It seems, however, that they’re still somewhat trepidatious as a result of the pandemic experience, since 38 percent report that the ability to cancel or rebook without penalty is the most important factor for them when arranging their next trip, trailed by 36 percent of respondents who said they’ll be paying closer attention to hygiene standards.
“The data really demonstrates that, while we’re keen to get back to regular travel, consumers are still tentative,” remarked GWI’s Chief Research Officer, Jason Mander added, Brands should take note, offer flexibility and, above all, demonstrate the overall value and experience they’re offering.”
Today’s record-high economic inflation levels leading to a “cost of living crisis” and resulting concerns about an oncoming recession are also impacting consumer sentiment. As the cost of travel goes up, along with everything else, 36 percent of Americans are being price-conscious when it comes to their travel spending, according to July 2022 GWI Zeitgeist data.
“While many people have jumped back into traveling after the disruption of the past couple of years, the ways in which we now live and work post-pandemic are heavily impacting travelers’ expectations,” said GWI’s CEO and Founder, Tom Smith. “That’s exactly why we have created a travel-specific data set—to help our customers stay on top of these ongoing changes, and really understand what people want and need.”
Viewed altogether, U.S. travelers reported that their top priorities when planning a vacation right now are visiting family, relatives and friends (53 percent), or going on a beach or coastal getaway. However, when the data is broken down generationally, it’s evident that people in each age group have different preferences on how they want to travel.
A generational breakdown of U.S. consumer data also reveals some key differences among the things that each age group is presently prioritizing when planning their vacations:
Baby Boomers
69% – Cost/Value for money
67% – Good Weather/Climate
64% – Sights/Attractions to visit
Gen X
65% – Cost/Value for money
63% – Sights/Attractions to visit
59% – Relaxation
Millennials
58% – Fun/Excitement
56% – Relaxation
55% – Sights/Attractions
Gen Z
70% – Fun/Excitement
56% – Cost/Value for money
56% – Good weather/Climate

Community Comes First For Angel City FC Cedars-Sinai And Copa Angelina Angel City FC
Community Comes First For Angel City FC, Cedars-Sinai, And Copa Angelina – Angel City FC https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/community-comes-first-for-angel-city-fc-cedars-sinai-and-copa-angelina-angel-city-fc/
When Shawna Palmer played soccer growing up, it wasn’t because she wanted to go pro. The idea didn’t even occur to her, she says, until her freshman year of college.
“I played the sport because I loved it,” she says. “Not because I understood how everything worked, or I saw somebody on the national team that I was trying to be like.”
That love for the game, without regard to advancing through the ranks or earning scholarships, is the animating force behind Football For Her (FFH), the nonprofit that Palmer—now a retired professional—founded in 2019. It’s also an ethos that exemplifies the commitment of Angel City’s official health partner, Cedars-Sinai, to empowering women, families, and youth to put their health first. Supporting healthy living by expanding access to sport is a major piece of that commitment.
That commitment, which is shared by Palmer and ACFC, is in the air at FFH’s weekly pickup series, Footy Fridays. The event takes place at Lab Five Soccer, an outdoor futsal facility tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood in Pacoima.
On this warm summer evening, there’s a festival vibe: the parking lot is overflowing with kids and their families, music is bumping, and a street vendor hawks duros and paletas. The teams on the first two fields stand out: all the players are girls and nonbinary kids. A majority, around 85%, are children of color. This is Palmer’s vision, come to life.
“I’m trying to provide opportunities I never had growing up,” she says. “For them to have a space that’s consistent, where they’re around other girls and other women that look like them.”
Every Friday, a few dozen girls and gender-expansive youth converge here to play soccerand hang out with their friends. It’s such a simple thing, but according to Palmer, “it’s more impactful than I even know. I don’t even realize it until I get pulled aside by parents.”
First, Palmer takes the kids through a quick group warmup, then groups them by age and splits them into teams. From there, it’s good old-fashioned pickup: five minutes, winner stays (for up to two games in a row). A group of female coaches referee and help run the show. There’s plenty of laughter in the crowd, but on the field, things are competitive. One girl of about 14, in a move that would make Christen Press proud, smoothly cuts past a defender and sends in a rocket with her right foot. Off the post—this time.
Supporting FFH is just one of the ways Cedars-Sinai is advancing their commitment to leveling the playing field for underrepresented communities. Through their partnership with ACFC and the Play Equity Fund, they also support the Girls Academic Leadership Academy’s sports program, and Girls Play LA’s soccer program for girls and nonbinary youth.
The Girls Academic Leadership Academy is a rigorous college preparatory school for girls in grades 6–12. The school emphasizes achievement in STEM fields, with an eye towards giving LAUSD students a clear pathway to college. Through their partnership with Angel City, Cedars-Sinai is supporting the school’s athletics programming, focusing on soccer.
Girls Play LA (GPLA), meanwhile, is a program focused on providing girls in underserved communities with access to sports. Cedars-Sinai partners with GPLA on their soccer program at the Expo Center, which eliminates economic barriers to participation for dozens of girls and nonbinary youth.
The FFH space is noteworthy—and, unfortunately, unique—in multiple ways. First, says Palmer, there’s a serious need for women coaches in youth soccer. Things have gotten better since she was growing up, when women in the coaching ranks were almost unheard of, but there’s still a gap. It’s something she saw firsthand when she was doing individual coaching after retiring as a pro.
“I was again getting a lot of clients just because I was female,” she says. “They didn’t care about my credentials, they didn’t know I played professionally. People just said, ‘I want you to train my daughter because you’re a female.’”
Access to female mentorship—and to a safe environment where girls and nonbinary kids can be themselves—is vital. Dozens of parents have told Palmer how important this space is, but she recounts an especially stark illustration: one girl had been acting withdrawn, and eventually told her mom that her male club coach had made an insulting comment about her body.
“It completely shot her confidence,” Palmer remembers. Footy Friday helped build her back up. “Providing a space for these girls to feel comfortable and empowered and get their confidence back, just by having fun in a positive environment—it’s a lot.”
Another important facet of the program is the fact that so many participants are Latina or other youth of color. That’s a big deal in youth soccer, which—despite the enormous popularity of soccer among Latin Americans—has long been seen as white, affluent, and suburban. Palmer, whose mother is Vietnamese, remembers that growing up, she never had the opportunity to see herself in her adult mentors. She’s been able to change that for a lot of kids.
Finally, there’s the issue of literal space. “Field space is very, very limited,” she says. “It’s almost nonexistent in Los Angeles. Where it does exist, you have to pay or jump fences.”
That means that kids whose parents can’t afford to put them in club soccer—which is often very expensive—get squeezed out. “You can’t get this atmosphere unless you pay for a team,” she says, gesturing at the turf field behind her. “It’s not a basketball court. Soccer fields aren’t up everywhere. Unless you’re paying to be on an organized team, you can’t play any organized games.”
The inequity Palmer is working to address exists in all youth sports—both for girls and gender-expansive youth, but also children of color and those living in poverty—is a major issue. Many schools are cutting PE and sports budgets, and according to the LA84 Foundation, kids from households earning less than $25,000 are five times less likely to participate in sports. Latina girls have the lowest participation rates.
These issues are also the focus of Cedars-Sinai’s involvement in the Angel City sponsorship model, where 10% of their sponsorship commitment is allocated to community organizations to affect change in Los Angeles. Through a partnership with the Play Equity Fund, Cedars-Sinai and Angel City FC are supporting Football For Her’s Footy Fridays, Girls Leadership Academy’s sports program, and Girls Play LA’s soccer program for girls and non-binary youth.
Since the early days of Angel City, Cedars-Sinai has supported the club’s vision of community support. Cedars-Sinai was also the first official partner of ACFC’s annual competition, Copa Angelina, where Angel City took on the Mexico Women’s National Team. Their partnership with Copa Angelina follows the Angel City model of allocating 10% of sponsorship dollars to community projects. Cedars-Sinai’s interest in the cup stemmed from a pledge to bring world-class care to patients wherever they may be, in their many locations throughout Los Angeles and through their partnerships in Mexico City and beyond.
That’s also central to Angel City’s mission of uplifting women, girls, and gender-expansive individuals through sport. “For me to be able to provide this space in 2019,” says Palmer, “not knowing there was even going to be a professional team here, and now there’s Angel City—for me, it’s full circle. I cried the first game. And the second game. I never had that [growing up].”
In addition to pickup games, Footy Friday also features a rotating slate of non-soccer-related activities like journaling and games. Small-group sessions with coaches offer one-on-one mentorship time. “Some parents tell me, ‘what I love the most is the social aspect for my child’,” says Palmer. “When they’re all sitting out, playing games, eating tacos. We’ve created this really cool community of people.”
FFH’s reach doesn’t end with this event, either: it also puts on clinics, beach cleanups, back-to-school events, and virtual summits featuring guest speakers like professional players (Angel City captain Ali Riley and USWNT and Gotham forward Midge Purce have both joined), freestyle pros, and health experts. Everything is geared toward the broader mission of improving access.
Of course, it isn’t just about soccer. In a world that is too often unwelcoming or outright hostile to girls, trans kids, and kids of color, spaces where those young people can simply exist, without having to hide or apologize, can be lifesaving. As it so often is, soccer is just what brings people together.

After a Monday rainout, the Guardians had the chance to start ace Shane Bieber on short rest in a win-or-go-home ALDS Game 5 against the Yankees. Instead, the Guardians stayed the course and started Aaron Civale at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees and slugger Giancarlo Stanton seemed to enjoy that decision greatly.
Stanton took Civale deep in the first with a three-run shot:
That was a 379-footer to right center clocked at 107.5 miles per hour off the bat. If it didn’t seem all that impressive, it’s because we’re spoiled by Stanton’s superhuman strength.
The next batter for the Yankees, Josh Donaldson, reached on an infield single. We’re mentioning this here because that would be the final batter Civale faced.
Civale’s final line: 1/3 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, BB, HBP, 1 K. Coincidentally, the only Yankees hitter he retired was Aaron Judge, who swung through a high curve on a 3-2 count.
“In a normal game, you can let him get his footing,” Cleveland manager Terry Francona said during an in-game interview. “I’m not sure we could do that today.”
Civale became just the 37th pitcher in history to last 1/3 of an inning or less in a postseason start. The most recent was Braves starter Dylan Lee in Game 4 of the 2021 World Series. He was removed with the bases loaded and one out. The Braves weren’t really planning on taking him deep in the game anyway.
That’s likely the case with Civale and the Guardians here. They have well-rested relief studs in Sam Hentges, Trevor Stephan, James Karinchak and especially Emmanuel Clase — the best closer left in the playoffs, and he hasn’t thrown since Game 2. Surely the Guardians were hoping for more work and fewer runs from Civale.

At the GITEX Global conference last week in Dubai, communications hardware and software provider Avaya showcased how its technology can be integrated into a metaverse experience. GITEX has become a premier technology conference across the globe and rivals CES for attendance.
Avaya has been a mainstay at the event for years and historically has been effective in highlighting its technology and innovation through customer use cases.
We are still in the early stages of the metaverse, so there aren’t many real-life examples. In fact, most IT leaders I talk to are interested in futuristic technology but are not sure of how to use it or what some practical business use cases are.
Here, the Avaya Dubai team collaborated with its partner, Avanza Solutions, and showcased the result at the Avaya stand at GITEX. Avanza is one of the premier digital transformation solution providers in the Gulf region.
Avaya, Avanza partner to bring metaverse to life
The joint solution supports Dubai’s vision of being one of the top metaverse cities and is set to create tens of thousands of metaverse-related jobs in the next decade as the city looks to draw on the virtual environment to add to the already strong economy of the UAE.
Also: Here’s how the metaverse could transform your future job
Currently, if a company wants to come and do business in Dubai, there are several tasks that need to be completed, including getting permits and applying for work visas. Instead of having to complete these tasks by driving to the government agencies and office buildings, which could take hours based on the traffic I experienced in Dubai, all the tasks can be completed in the metaverse. Some services can be done via the web, but even this can be challenging because each agency has its own website.
The interface even allows the selection of real estate, where users can go into virtual versions of buildings, design an office, and experience the many views Dubai offers. The Dubai metaverse brings together everything required to start a business in one place: physical and virtual.
Avaya brings contact center to the metaverse
If a customer runs into problems, the user can connect with a contact center agent via the metaverse interface in conjunction with Avaya OneCloud CCaaS (contact center as a service). Customers can interact with virtual agents within the metaverse, speak to a live agent via phone call, or even use social media apps, such as Meta’s WhatsApp.
For Avaya, bringing the metaverse into its contact center wasn’t a complicated process. At GITEX, I talked to Avaya International President Nidal Abou-Ltaif about this, and he told me, “We just look at it as another channel. Avaya OneCloud CCaaS is fully cloud-native and designed to be open, so adding another channel for customer interactions can be done quickly and without any disruption.”
While Avaya’s mission during the past few years has been to create “Experiences That Matter,” the theme of its GITEX booth was “Innovation Without Disruption.” The way Avaya integrated metaverse into OneCloud CCaaS underscores that. Avaya customers can experiment with the metaverse and add contact center capabilities without having to bring in a new platform or go through a major upgrade.
Also: The metaverse is coming, and the security threats have already arrived
If there is one key takeaway for business leaders from the pandemic it’s that no one knows what the future holds, which underscores the importance of business agility. An open platform like OneCloud CCaaS enables businesses to quickly adapt their customer service strategy to meet current demands without having to go through a massive upgrade.
Dubai metaverse creates a digital twin of business processes
The Dubai metaverse can be thought of as a digital twin of all government processes required to establish a business in the city.
In theory, once this is up and running, organizations could use the metaverse version of the government services to augment or even replace the physical ones.
Ideally, citizens and businesses would have access to all services in a hybrid mode where the web, metaverse, or physical services would all give an identical experience.
One of the unique aspects of the Gulf region is that the public sector drives innovation and sets the standard for private companies. In the US or western Europe, we often see government agencies lag in technology, sometimes by as much as a decade. I have been to Dubai several times and have been impressed with the level of technology adoption across the city. Drones, robots, video cameras, and IoT are commonly used to improve people’s lives, and now the metaverse is coming.
It’s interesting to think about where else Avaya could take this technology. At last year’s GITEX, Avaya demonstrated a real estate application built with Dubai-based real estate company EMAAR Properties, which had built an application prospective buyers could use to tour buildings and talk to agents virtually. This was designed for the pandemic, but like everything else in the world, once a process goes digital, it’s hard to go back. It would make sense to bring something like the EMAAR-based application together with the metaverse and allow buyers to talk to agents, bankers, property managers, or other people in the metaverse.
This example of a digital twin is also used to deliver city services that could be replicated in other industries, such as retail, higher education, real estate, and gaming.
The metaverse is coming, and it was good to see a practical example at the Avaya stand at GITEX. The “innovation without disruption” theme Avaya used at the show is important because new technology often has lengthy adoption cycles; any kind of disruption to the business has customer service, revenue, or other implications.

Everyone knows the tragedy (and horrible burning smell) of getting food stuck to your skillet. But you don’t have to suffer through breakfasts of charred scrambled eggs and blackened pancakes. You may love your stainless steel cookware, but any professional chef will tell you—everyone should own at least one nonstick pan.
Another benefit of owning a nonstick pan is that it doesn’t require a lot of oil or butter to prevent sticking, which leads many to think it’s the most healthy cookware to use. To settle the score on the healthiest type of nonstick pan, we turned to the Director of the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Kitchen Appliances & Culinary Innovation Lab, Nicole Papantoniou, who has nearly a decade of experience professionally testing kitchen tools and gadgets.
“I don’t like saying that the pan itself is healthy because it’s a pan and you don’t eat it,” Papantoniou quipped. “But cooking with a nonstick pan allows you to use less oil, which leads to a consumption of fewer calories, so it could be healthier because of that. You also tend to use a lower cooking temperature with nonstick pans, and some think that cooking food at lower temperatures is healthier than blasting it with heat.”
Regardless of your reasoning, picking up one of these kitchen essentials is bound to get you jazzed about all the pan-fried salmon, fluffy French omelets, and sizzling skillet recipes like lemon-herb chicken and potatoes you’ll be making—all with minimal cleanup and no sticking, shredding, or scorching. Inexpensive, long-lasting nonstick pans.
We have recommendations for the best frying pans for every type of cook, but if you’re looking to outfit your whole kitchen, you’re in luck! Whether you’d prefer to spring for a whole nonstick or ceramic cookware set or you want to splurge on a sleek, buy-it-for-life cast iron skillet, we’re here to offer a helping hand.
Our top picks
How we picked these products
To find the best nonstick pan, we turned to our friends at the Good Housekeeping Institute, who have identified the best and highest-rated brands and put them to the test. Their team of on-staff experts—which includes all types: engineers! data analysts! registered dietitians!—rigorously put everyday products to the test (and then more and more tests) in their New York City-based labs to determine which ones you can trust.
From frying and scrambling over 120 eggs to searing 15 steaks, these Kitchen Tech Experts put a plethora of pans (in fact, 80 nonstick cookware sets and 15 additional nonstick pans) through rigorous tests to analyze their user-friendliness, durability, cleanability, weight, heat distribution and retention, ergonomics, and ability to balance on a stovetop. After reviewing their findings and discussing their road tests in-depth with Papantoniou, we’ve determined that these are the best nonstick pans you can buy in 2022.

Are nonstick pans safe?
Nonstick pans have gotten a bad rap from those ugly rumors of toxicity, but the truth is, these are not the nonstick cookware sets you grew up hearing about. They are lightweight, affordable, convenient, and perfectly healthy (as long as you heed the manufacturer’s recommendations).
Nonstick cookware gets its signature slick, nonreactive surface from a synthetic coating like perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) or the FDA-approved polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Even if these chemical compounds don’t sound familiar, you’ve likely heard of their more popular brand name: Teflon. But before you start worrying about carcinogens and chemicals, it’s important to note that PFOAs and PTFEs are inert (a.k.a. they won’t react with chemicals inside or outside your body). Not only are these compounds safe to cook with, but also, let’s not forget why “Teflon” is practically synonymous with “durability.” However, that doesn’t mean your nonstick pans will last forever, even if some brands claim otherwise.
Papantoniou provided some insight on how often you should replace your nonstick pans: “You likely need to replace your nonstick pan every couple of years. Over time the nonstick coating starts to wear, and any time you see a nick or scratch on the surface, you’ll want to replace it because it compromises the integrity of the pan,” she said.
Some brands tout having the longest-lasting nonstick cookware, but she explained, “It’s less about the brand and more about the pan’s construction. Some have more layers than others, for example, which makes for a better nonstick pan.” Between shopping for a nonstick pan with the right materials and caring for it properly, you can get a good 5-10 years out of it before its time to shop around for a replacement.
Here are some tips for getting the most out of your nonstick pan:
You should never—ever—use nonstick cooking spray on a nonstick pan. It may seem counterintuitive, but these sprays gradually leave a film on the nonstick surface that is nearly impossible to remove, and therefore compromises the coating’s integrity over time.
However, you still need to put oil, butter, or some kind of fat in a nonstick pan. (Trust us, it’s healthier in the long run if you do than if you don’t!) “You never want to heat a nonstick pan without anything in it, so using oil helps you not overheat it ultimately,” Papantoniou advised. “And in terms of cooking, it’s not needed per se, but it definitely makes things taste better.”
Meanwhile, there is a spray you can use on your nonstick pan: Nonstick repair spray. To repair a nonstick coating and make your nonstick pan, well, nonstick again, this nifty spray should do the trick—just keep an eye out for any scratches.
Unless otherwise permitted by the manufacturer, do not use metal utensils with your nonstick pan or put in the dishwasher. Metal utensils can of course cause scratches and scuffs that threaten the longevity of nonstick coatings, but harsh soaps, high pressure, and scalding temperatures can cause equally disastrous results.
Some manufacturers may say it’s okay, but it’s best to avoid using nonstick pans over high heat to prevent damage or the release of harmful odors or chemicals. Instead, consider cooking with low to medium-low heat. (And in the event cooking on high heat is unavoidable, try not to do so for longer than 30 seconds.)
When the time comes to send your nonstick pan off to pasture, Papantoniou had some advice for what you can do once you’ve determined it’s time to throw away your old, scratched, and ineffective nonstick pans: “Check your manufacturer’s instructions to see what the best disposal process is. Some metals are recyclable, but with the coatings, it can depend, so always check the manufacturer’s instructions.”

How do you choose a nonstick pan?
Whether you’re a longtime nonstick fan looking to replace your trusty pan or you’re a nonstick novice, we’re here to make sure you don’t get burned by crummy cookware. These versatile pans are already plenty affordable, but you also want to ensure they meet your needs in the kitchen. First and foremost, it’s important to know what makes a good nonstick pan.
“I like a nonstick pan that has some heft to it, so it’ll sit on your burner without toppling, and ones that take a little bit longer to heat up, so you don’t risk getting to that 450º F temp fast, which is typically the maximum temperature recommended for using nonstick pans,” Papantoniou explained. “I like coatings that say they can be used with metal utensils, not necessarily because I want to use metal utensils, but because it’s a good indicator that they’re more durable. And cleanup is really important too—pans that have some grit to them, which makes them more durable, are actually harder to clean.”
When selecting a nonstick pan, construction is key. But there are a lot of factors to choose from, such as weight, materials, and design features. Pans with more heft can get you a good sear on a steak, but they’re not as easy to lift and flip. Meanwhile, more lightweight pans can be less durable and heat up too quickly.
Papantoniou had some pointers if you’re struggling to choose a nonstick pan: “I think the main thing to consider is, how are you going to use it? Are you looking for something to just make eggs in the morning, or are you looking to cook a whole meal for your family? Because that will determine the size—an 8-inch pan is good for a single portion of eggs and breakfast foods, whereas 10 inches is a good average size, and our test kitchen likes 12 inch pans for cooking in bigger batches. The second thing I would look for is material. Do you want a standard nonstick pan that lasts a little longer, or do you want a ceramic pan that can somewhat handle higher temperatures? And then the other thing is heft. If you’re looking for something lightweight, it’ll heat faster and it’s easier to handle, whereas if you go with something heavier, it’ll be more durable.”

Young Americans aged between 21 and 42 are 7.5 times more likely to hold crypto in their portfolios than investors over 43, a new survey from Bank of America shows.
According to the survey, younger Americans with money to invest are also less interested in stocks than older investors, with the younger cohort instead viewing crypto and other so-called alternative investments as their “No. 1 choice.”
An alternative investment normally refers to investments in any other asset than stocks, bonds and cash. This investment category has become increasingly popular in recent years, as many investors have seen the stock market as overvalued and risky, while bank savings have paid out interest rates far below the rate of inflation in most Western countries.
Source: Bank of America
“While overall [crypto] usage is low, younger people are 7.5 times more likely to hold crypto in their portfolios and five times more likely to say they understand it quite well,” the bank commented, stressing the importance of age when it comes to interest in crypto investing.
In terms of where young investors go to find information about crypto investment opportunities, the bank said social media is the most popular. “Half of the younger group said they turn to social media for guidance on crypto, compared with 30% of the older group,” the BofA survey said.
Meanwhile, the survey also found that a whopping 75% of investors between the ages of 21 and 42 do not believe it is possible to achieve “above-average returns” with a traditional portfolio consisting solely of stocks and bonds.
Instead, the youngest group of investors are seeking to improve their returns with alternatives, including private equity, commodities, real estate, and – as already mentioned – crypto.
The findings were published in Bank of America’s 2022 Private Bank Study of Wealthy Americans that was released this week. The survey was based on answers from 1,052 high-net-worth individuals in the US.
In the past, Bank of America has shown some interest in crypto at the corporate level, having participated as a strategic investor in blockchain infrastructure platform Paxos‘ Series D round of funding.
Last year, the major bank also made some headlines when it published its first official piece of investment research on the crypto market titled “Digital Assets Primer: Only the first inning.”

NEW YORK — Global cement company Lafarge will pay the U.S. government nearly $780 million for conspiring with Islamic State militants to run a production plant in war-ravaged Syria during its civil war — a move that helped bolster the terrorist group’s meager finances, officials said Tuesday.
A top executive of Lafarge, which was acquired by Swiss-based Holcim in 2015, pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn to a count of conspiring to provide material support to foreign terrorist organizations, admitting that Lafarge knowingly engaged in a deal with Islamic State, also known as ISIS, and the al-Nusrah Front (ANF), a Syrian Islamist militia, in 2013 and 2014.
The guilty plea marked the first time a corporation was prosecuted under a U.S. statute that prohibits a person or entity from assisting foreign terrorist groups, officials said. The Justice Department has a broad ability to bring such cases in U.S. courts even if the conduct generally occurred abroad but also involves at least one wire transaction locally.
Justice Department officials said Tuesday that the two groups obtained at least $6 million in payments from Lafarge. The payoffs allowed Lafarge to operate the plant in the Northern region of Syria, near the Turkish border, and bought them protection from the militias.
The Islamic State also made more than $3 million directly through the sale of cement it obtained at the end of Lafarge’s operation there starting in late 2014.
In total, Lafarge agreed to forfeit $687 million and pay $91 million in criminal fines to the United States.
U.S. District Judge William F. Kuntz, who accepted Lafarge’s guilty plea, said the case “impacts global communities [and] the national security of the United States,” as well as victims of the terrorists.
Lafarge, which is based in France, had dealings with ISIS at a time when the group was responsible for capturing and killing journalists and aid workers in the devastated region.
Justice Department officials said the company paid for access to the plant and for protection from ISIS at a time when other corporations were fleeing Syria.
The Islamic State even issued stamped driving permits for Lafarge workers to get access to the plant.
“To the brothers at the checkpoints of Qarah Qawzak Bridge, may Allah keep you safe,” a translation of the permit read. “Kindly allow the employees of Lafarge Cement Company to pass through after completing the necessary work and after paying their dues to us.”
U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said at a news conference Tuesday that Lafarge and its Syrian subsidiary were responsible for providing significant funds to ISIS, which “otherwise operated on a shoestring budget.”
“This conduct by a Western corporation was appalling and has no precedent or justification,” Peace said.
Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said greedy intentions by Lafarge fueled rampant violence.
“In its pursuit of profits, Lafarge and its top executives not only broke the law, they helped to finance a violent reign of terror that ISIS and [ANF] imposed on the people of Syria,” Monaco said.
In France, six former executives and Lafarge are facing pending criminal charges in connection with their relationships in Syria. Those six people were referred to in court papers in the New York case but were not named.
“We deeply regret that this conduct occurred and have worked with the U.S. Department of Justice to resolve this matter,” Lafarge said in a statement.
The conduct did not involve “Lafarge operations or employees in the United States and none of the executives who were involved in the conduct are with Lafarge or any affiliated entities today,” the statement also said.

A dental lab in the Sault is getting almost $200,000 in provincial funding for some new equipment and technology.
The provincial government said the money is for building improvements at 4-D Dental Lab, as well as to cover the cost of some new equipment and digital technology.
It will allow the lab to do scanning and 3-D printing and milling to manufacture restorative products for local dentists.
“The work is much easier on the staff,” said Dr. Kent Floreani.
“It was all hand work at one point, where you would build everything up with wax and then work on it. Now it’s much easier. You sit there with your coffee and your mouse and you design on the computer.”
Sault MPP Ross Romano said the lab has big potential.
“The growth has the opportunity to create so many jobs throughout our community,” Romano said.
“(The lab) has the opportunity to not only service people of Sault Ste Marie who have a need, but people throughout the entire region who have a need, also even moving into the northern Michigan market. The potential for growth is so significant.”
The new equipment has more capability than its current usage, which Floreani said will help the business expand. He added that they plan to hire at least two additional staff by next year.
Union Head: Vegas Officer Killing Should Bring Death Penalty The Washington Post
Union Head: Vegas Officer Killing Should Bring Death Penalty – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/union-head-vegas-officer-killing-should-bring-death-penalty-the-washington-post/
LAS VEGAS — With police officers filling the courtroom gallery, a man accused of killing a veteran patrol officer stood silently before a judge Tuesday in a case that the top prosecutor in Las Vegas has said might bring the death penalty.
Tyson Shawn Jordan Hampton stood shackled at the wrists, waist and ankles, with a bandage on his left forearm. He faces 27 felony charges including murder, attempted murder, assault and battery with a deadly weapon, and discharging a firearm. The 24-year-old’s court-appointed attorneys declined to seek his release from jail on bail and the judge set another court date Nov. 1.
Deputy public defenders Conor Slife and Anna Clark declined after the hearing to comment.
In the court hallway, Steve Grammas, executive director of the Las Vegas Police Protective Association, stood surrounded by about 30 police officers and union members and called for capital punishment.
“This should be a death penalty case,” Grammas told reporters. “That is the expression from myself and I believe all of our police officers. We’re all upset that we have to be here to deal with a case because we lost one of our brothers.”
Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said separately that a decision about seeking the death penalty will be made in the coming weeks. The last execution of a convicted criminal in Nevada was in 2006.
Hampton, of Las Vegas, also faces a misdemeanor domestic violence charge stemming from allegations he battered his wife before Las Vegas police officers Truong Thai and Ryan Gillihan arrived a little after 1 a.m. on Oct. 13 to answer a 911 call about a street side domestic argument several blocks east of the Las Vegas Strip.
Police body camera video released Monday showed Hampton seated in a blue sedan, refusing to comply with Thai and beginning to drive away before opening fire with a handgun from the driver’s window of his vehicle.
Assistant Clark County Sheriff Andrew Walsh described the weapon as a high-powered “AK-47 pistol” firing military-grade 7.62-caliber ammunition, and said Thai was shot through the side of his ballistic vest. He died at a nearby hospital.
Hampton’s mother-in-law was wounded in the leg, but police said her injury was not life-threatening.
Police said Hampton fired 18 shots, Thai fired five shots and Gillihan fired seven times as Hampton drove away.
Hampton was arrested a short time later a few blocks away and received what police said were minor injuries when a police dog jumped on him to bring him to the ground outside his car.
Walsh said Hampton had the alleged murder weapon in his possession when the K-9 reached him, and police also found a .40-caliber handgun that was not used in the shooting.
The AK-47 is a standard assault rifle developed in the former Soviet Union. It is sometimes referred to as a Kalashnikov.
A funeral with full line-of-duty honors is scheduled Oct. 28 for Thai. In 23 years as a Las Vegas police officer, he served as a patrol and training officer, financial crimes investigator and firearms instructor. The 49-year-old father of a 19-year-old woman also was an avid volleyball player and coach.
Gillihan, 32, a police officer since 2017, is on paid leave pending district attorney and departmental reviews of the shooting.

Coffeys ultra-Libertarian Health Stance Risks Lives Tory Ex-Minister Warns The Guardian
Coffey’s ‘ultra-Libertarian’ Health Stance Risks Lives, Tory Ex-Minister Warns – The Guardian https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/coffeys-ultra-libertarian-health-stance-risks-lives-tory-ex-minister-warns-the-guardian/
People could die because of Thérèse Coffey’s “ultra-libertarian ideological” reluctance to crack down on smoking and obesity, a Conservative ex-health minister has warned.
The strongly worded criticism of the health secretary came from Dr Dan Poulter, a Tory MP and NHS doctor who served as a health minister in the coalition government from 2012 to 2015.
Poulter claims Coffey’s “hostility to what the extreme right call ‘nanny statism’” is stopping her from taking firm action against the “major killers” of tobacco and bad diet.
His intervention in an opinion piece for the Guardian was prompted by Coffey making clear that she opposed banning adults from smoking in cars containing children, even though the practice was outlawed in 2015 and is credited with reducing young people’s exposure to secondhand smoke.
The government’s widely anticipated scrapping of measures to curb obesity such as the sugar tax and ditching of the tobacco control plan and health inequalities white paper – both of which previous health ministers had promised to publish – have led Poulter to brand Coffey’s stance “deeply alarming”.
He writes: “More smoking and more obesity means more illness, more pressure on the NHS and shorter lives, particularly amongst the poorest in society.
“I am acutely concerned that the health secretary’s ideological hostility to what history shows is government’s potentially very positive role in protecting us against these grave threats to our health will exacerbate the problems they already pose.
“At its worst such a radically different approach to public health could cost lives, as it will inevitably lead to more people smoking and becoming dangerously overweight.”
The Guardian disclosed last week that officials in Whitehall believe that Coffey has dropped plans to publish the tobacco control plan, which was due out by the end of the year.
The health secretary, who is herself a smoker, has consistently voted against moves to curb smoking since she became the MP for Suffolk Coastal in 2010 and has also accepted £1,100 in hospitality and gifts from the tobacco firm Gallaher.
Coffey is ignoring the “ethical and practical” duty on governments to tackle “the great scourges of our health, notably smoking, unhealthy food and excess drinking” and has “shattered” a longstanding consensus on state intervention stretching back to the work by the then-health secretary Norman Fowler on HIV and Aids in the 1990s, Poulter added.
Health charities endorsed Poulter’s remarks. Deborah Arnott, the chief executive of Action on Smoking and Health, said: “Libertarian ideology is as inadequate to improve public health as it was to drive economic growth. Just as the government’s failed economic strategy came straight from the playbook of the Institute of Economic Affairs, so does this visceral opposition to the so-called ‘nanny state’ and obsession with the free market.
“It wasn’t the free market which delivered the fastest rates of decline in smoking in Europe in the first two decades of this century.”
Katherine Jenner, the director of the Obesity Health Alliance, a grouping of 50 health and medical organisations, said: “The alliance shares Dr Poulter’s grave concerns. MPs don’t want their constituents living with chronic illness, and the public want it to be easier to make healthier choices. While there was some scepticism about the soft drinks industry levy when it was introduced by the Conservatives in 2018, it has led to sugar consumption falling by 30g per household per week, whilst not affecting sales. Now 71% of the public want companies to remove more sugar and salt from products.”
She added: “Abandoning key obesity prevention measures is unfairly putting people at risk of developing life-limiting physical and mental health conditions. Government analysis projected that NHS costs attributable to overweight and obesity could reach £9.7bn by 2050. The health secretary can progress with these health-promoting policies and still create a freer society; free from the harm caused by unhealthy food and drink.”
Coffey did not respond to Poulter’s remarks. But a Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: “The tobacco control plan has not been scrapped and the government remains committed to its smoke free ambition by 2030.
“Tackling obesity also remains a priority for the government. Having a fit and healthy population is essential for a thriving economy and we remain committed to helping people live healthier lives.”

It’s been more than a decade in the making, but the Philadelphia Phillies are back in the National League Championship Series and on the brink of reaching the World Series. It’s been even longer for San Diego — nearly 25 years — since the Padres last played in the NLCS.
After an up-and-down regular season that saw the Phillies fire their manager in June and squeak into playoffs after some late-season struggles, Philadelphia has taken advantage of MLB’s new playoff format and gone on an unpredictable run past two of the National League’s toughest teams — the St. Louis Cardinals, who won the NL Central, and the Atlanta Braves, who soared past the New York Mets to win the NL East.
The Padres overcame their own issues — including the loss of star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., who was handed an 80-game suspension in mid-August for violating MLB’s performance-enhancing drug policy — to make their own magical run to the NLCS. San Diego first traveled to New York to dispatch a 101-win Mets team before conquering its biggest foe and most hated rival, the juggernaut Los Angeles Dodgers, who won a major-league leading 111 games this season.

The temperatures will be more like October baseball weather when the series heads to Philadelphia later in the week. Phillies-Padres season series
Philadelphia won the regular season series 4-3. The last game came June 26, which was an 8-5 Phillies win in San Diego. This will be the first time the teams have met in the playoffs.
How did the Phillies reach the NLCS?
After finishing third in the NL East with an 87-75 record, the Phillies locked up the third and final wild card spot in the third-to-last game of the regular season.
They swept through the best-of-three wild card round in St. Louis against the NL Central champion Cardinals.
Moving on to the NLDS, the Phillies stunned the 101-win Braves by holding on for a 7-6 Game 1 victory, then suffered a setback in Atlanta in Game 2 before routing the reigning World Series champions in Games 3 and 4 in Philly to lock up the best-of-five series.
How did the Padres reach the NLCS?
After finishing second in the NL West with an 89-73 record, the Padres clinched a playoff berth on Oct. 2, one day before the Philies.
The Padres stunned the Mets by taking two of three games in New York in the wild card round to advance to the NLDS.
In the all-Southern California NLDS, the Padres shocked the world again. The Dodgers got off to a hot start, taking Game 1 in Los Angeles before the Padres stole one back in Game 2. Returning to San Diego, the Padres won two consecutive tight games against their rivals in Games 3 and 4 to claim the best-of-five series.

However, their supremacy is coming to an end as a new NFT card game takes charge with gripping game mechanics and lower barriers to entry. As revealed by a rapidly progressing presale, Calvaria will mark the beginning of a new era of card games.
A Crypto Game for Non-crypto Users
There are dozens of NFT card games. But most bite the dust a few days into launch, failing to penetrate the mainstream gaming market. One of the key reasons is the jargon-laced blockchain and crypto narratives that can be a major turn-off for traditional gamers.
This is where Calvaria comes in.
Calvaria: Duels of Eternity
The emerging battle card game marks itself off in the packed gaming market by targeting both traditional and crypto gamers. It offers free-to-play and play-to-earn versions, which are customized for both categories of users. That way, it aims to convert traditional gamers into crypto gamers over time, by introducing the benefits of going play-to-earn.
The free-to-play version will be available for download on both Google Play and App Store. It will give users an opportunity to get acquainted with the game without installing a wallet or purchasing costly NFTs and crypto tokens. Once they’re well-versed in gameplay, they can move to the play-to-earn version. It will help them turn their gaming skills into a source of income with a small initial investment.
Calvaria has launched an attractive giveaway with $100k up for grabs on Gleam to spread the word about the game.

Riveting Gaming Mechanics
One of the key features that will establish Calvaria’s supremacy in the coming days is its unique theme. Calvaria is centered around the afterlife. The theme opens a lot of creative possibilities, as it has not been used much in gaming or even popular media.
The main game from Calvaria is Duels of Eternity, which is currently in the development phases. The card game hosts tournaments where the cards represent different characters, each with its own unique sets of abilities. You need to defeat opponents using complex strategies and tactics to win rewards and upgrades.
If the gaming mechanics unfold as detailed in the whitepaper, it has the potential to give top NFT games like Alien Worlds and Gods Unchained a run for their money. It is designed to grab the attention of traditional gamers, not just crypto gamers, who prioritize the earning aspect. Calvaria mini-games are already out.
What gives Calvaria high upside potential in 2022, apart from ease of access and addictive gameplay?

Calvaria rewards gamers for the time and effort they put into the game and the ecosystem. $RIA token is the fuel of the Calvaria ecosystem. You need $RIA to access all game features and buy an initial deck of cards.
It can also be used to buy cards, upgrades, energy replenishment packs, and more. If you have idle $RIA holdings, you can stake them in the ecosystem to earn daily passive income rewards. A specific amount of $RIA tokens locked on the staking platform allows users to participate in the governance of the ecosystem.
The presale of $RIA is fast selling out, as a result of the massive traction from crypto investors and gamers alike. Predicted to gain around 30X growth next year, the token is one of the best cryptocurrencies to buy now. Zero vesting adds to the appeal of the presale. Opinion | At Last, The U.S. Edges Toward Intervening In Haiti – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/opinion-at-last-the-u-s-edges-toward-intervening-in-haiti-the-washington-post/
Haiti’s descent into anarchy accelerated, predictably, after its president’s assassination 15 months ago. Only now is the Biden administration throwing its weight behind international intervention — sending in a force that would presumably include U.S. personnel in some capacity. That stance, too long in coming, is justified on humanitarian grounds and dovetails with the United States’ own interests. It also sets the stage for a risky and possibly violent insertion of police or soldiers in a country where armed criminal gangs have made the capital city a lawless dystopia.
In backing an intervention, Washington and its allies must calibrate the deployment to meet the undeniable dangers. President Biden and other key leaders should make the case that the perils of acting are outweighed by the urgency of containing a security and public health emergency that threatens hundreds of thousands of lives.
The United States and Mexico introduced a resolution at a special session of the U.N. Security Council on Monday, urging what the U.S. envoy to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, called “a limited, carefully scoped, non-U.N. mission led by a partner country with the deep, necessary experience.” The draft echoes a similar recent proposal aimed at reinforcing the Haitian police from U.N. Secretary General António Guterres, who on Monday called Haiti’s crisis “nightmarish.”
The immediate trigger for action is that gangs in Port-au-Prince, the capital, have blockaded the country’s biggest fuel terminals and severed roads, meaning hospitals, schools, food outlets and banks can no longer provide basic services. Water supplies are also breaking down, and a cholera outbreak that began several weeks ago is spreading, with no effective public health system to contain it.
Haiti, long the Western Hemisphere’s poorest country, is now in free fall. According to the United Nations, nearly half of Haiti’s 11 million people face “acute hunger,” including 1.8 million at risk of a food “emergency.” In Cité Soleil, a sprawling slum in the capital, 19,000 people face a food “catastrophe.”
Virtually anyone who can leave the country has done so, often making their way to the U.S. southern border. Others will surely make desperate attempts to follow, despite the deployment of a large U.S. Coast Guard vessel just offshore. This cannot continue.
The U.S. Agency for International Development has sent what it calls an “elite” disaster response team to Haiti — of seven individuals. That is inadequate. What’s needed is a highly prepared force — police experienced in urban environments are preferable to troops trained to kill. The first priority should be to reestablish access to fuel facilities and reopen transportation links. That will mean suppressing gangs now in charge, which are allied with powerful Haitian commercial clans. It would be useful if international public health workers quickly followed, with expertise and supplies to alleviate hunger and stop cholera from spreading.
Beyond that, Haiti needs a longer-term multinational peacekeeping force, without which there will be no possibility of future elections or a legitimate Haitian government — the preconditions of durable stability.
Since President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated in July 2021, we and other observers have warned of a humanitarian meltdown absent swift international action. Dire consequences materialized rapidly; they are no longer ignorable.

No Fondness Between GOP, Dem Candidates For Nevada Governor – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/no-fondness-between-gop-dem-candidates-for-nevada-governor-the-washington-post/
LAS VEGAS — Five years ago, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak and Joe Lombardo stood together in the national spotlight, kicking off a fund that raised millions of dollars for victims of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history on the Las Vegas Strip.
Sisolak, a Democrat, at the time was chairman of the powerful Clark County Commission, the elected body with jurisdiction over Las Vegas. He praised Lombardo, the nonpartisan elected Clark County sheriff and head of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the largest police agency in Nevada.
There are no fond words now, with Sisolak seeking a second term as governor and Lombardo, with backing from former President Donald Trump, leading a Republican bid to unseat him in a key partisan race drawing national attention.
“They want the same elected position — friends become antagonists as a result,” observed Fred Lokken, a political science professor at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno.
With days ticking down to Election Day on Nov. 8, polls generally show the race close between Sisolak and Lombardo. Sharp and shrill ads funded by the parties, political action committees and campaigns blame each candidate for a range of ills.
Campaign spending reports filed Monday show the race has been expensive. Sisolak reported spending $13.6 million since the beginning of the year, with $1.2 million on hand as of Sept. 30. Lombardo reported spending $4.8 million since Jan. 1 and $1.8 million on hand for the final five weeks of the race.
Through the end of June, campaign finance reports showed Sisolak raised about twice as much money in the race as Lombardo. Both had more than $1 million remaining to spend.
Sisolak backers point to crime in Las Vegas during Lombardo’s term as sheriff and cite Lombardo’s staffing decisions in a department with about 6,000 employees.
Lombardo acknowledges that crime has risen in the last two years, but says he has made the most of what he could with funding and mandates from a Democratic-controlled Legislature.
Lombardo backers point to an investigation by ProPublica, published in May, examining the hiring of a Chicago-based coronavirus testing company, Northshore Clinical Labs, that missed 96% of positive cases from the University of Nevada campus in Reno.
In a debate with Lombardo earlier this month, Sisolak denied impropriety, defended the state’s fast-track licensing of Northshore to expand testing capacity and noted the company was licensed by the federal government and other states.
Some issues in Nevada echo those in the other 35 states with governor’s races on this year’s ballot: abortion; the performance of President Joe Biden; support or opposition to Trump; and the economy, including inflation and housing costs.
Nevada unemployment led the nation and peaked at more than 28% in June 2020, after Sisolak closed non-essential businesses including casinos during the pandemic. It has rebounded to 4.4% in August. The state has some of the highest gasoline prices in the nation, according to AAA.
Lokken termed it “a merry mess of issues,” many of them complex and hard for voters to follow.
Both candidates say they want to improve education in a state consistently ranked at or near the bottom in funding and performance with high student-to-teacher ratios. Both say teachers should be paid more.
The powerful teachers’ union in Clark County, which backed Sisolak in 2018, announced this month that it won’t make any endorsement this election. Bids to break up the sprawling Clark County School District, with more than 300,000 students, have stalled.
Lombardo has said he favors school choice, which would help parents send their children to private schools at state expense. Sisolak has said he does not want to divert funding from public to private schools.
The candidates have also clashed over enacting a state-managed public health insurance option passed by the Legislature and signed by Sisolak. Lombardo, at a primary campaign event, used an expletive to deride it as bad policy.
“The economy is going to be the big driver,” Lokken predicted, but other issues such as abortion and the response to COVID, will contribute. “Neither party owns the economic issue and both of them contribute to the fracturing of the economy.”
Almost one in three of Nevada’s 1.8 million active registered voters are Democrats, about 593,000, with most of them living in Las Vegas and the Reno area. Almost 543,000 voters are registered as Republicans and nonpartisans total almost 531,000.
Both Sisolak and Lombardo claimed victory after the Oct. 2 debate, their only face-to-face meeting, during which Lombardo hesitated when asked whether Trump was “a great president.”
“I wouldn’t say great,” Lombardo responded. “I think he was a sound president.”
Later that day, Lombardo’s campaign issued a statement calling Trump “a great president and his accomplishments … some of the most impactful in American history.”
The next weekend, appearing with Trump at a Republican campaign rally at an airport in northern Nevada, Lombardo doubled down, calling Trump “the greatest president” and playing to the GOP base with a claim that Sisolak, if re-elected, will “go after your guns.”
Sisolak promised during his 2018 campaign — in the months after the Las Vegas shooting killed at least 58 people and injured hundreds — to ban assault rifles, silencers and “bump stock” adapters that allow for rapid fire.
As governor, he signed gun safety measures passed by the Democratic-led Legislature in 2019, including a “red flag” law letting people ask judges to order the temporary surrender of a firearm from a person deemed a threat to themselves or others. A federal ban on bump stocks remains in effect after the U.S. Supreme Court this month declined to take up a challenge.
On abortion, Lombardo has walked a tightrope, saying he would govern through a “pro-life lens” while acknowledging that Nevada voters in 1990 approved a referendum allowing for the procedure up to 24 weeks of pregnancy.
“That is an issue that doesn’t need to be in politics,” he said during a September campaign appearance.
Sisolak is a staunch supporter of abortion rights and has said that if he is re-elected he’ll ask the Legislature to codify an order he signed that protects in-state providers and patients visiting from out-of-state.
“I support, unequivocally, a woman’s right to choose,” he said during the debate. “Her health care decisions are between her and her doctor.”
Democrats nationally have focused on the abortion issue since the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in June overturning Roe v. Wade, a decision that for nearly 50 years guaranteed a constitutional right to an abortion.

With voting already underway, voters will soon decide on all of Arizona’s statewide elected offices, including state treasurer. This year features a matchup between Republican incumbent Kimberly Yee and Democratic challenger Martin Quezada.
The state treasurer is the chief officer responsible “for the banking and investment management duties for the state, and provides investment services to local governments, and exclusively manages the Permanent Land Endowment.”
Both candidates have experience serving in the state Legislature. Quezada has practiced law in Phoenix and Yee had previous experience in the Treasurer’s Office before running for public office. Yee was also the first Asian American to win statewide office in Arizona when she was elected treasurer in 2018.
On October 3, Yee and Quezada had a televised debate sponsored by the Citizens Clean Election Commission. Yee emphasized her accomplishments while in office, while challenger Quezada criticized current investment practices.
During her successful tenure, Yee has overseen a 69% increase in total investment assets, which reached a record high of $26.1 billion at the end of last year, despite the economic impact of the pandemic. The state operating balance also reached a record high of $7.7 billion.
Another record was achieved in June 2021, when the Permanent Land Endowment Trust Fund, which supports K-12 education in the state, saw a return of 27.5%. During Yee’s time as treasurer, the Permanent Land Endowment has consistently delivered to Arizona schools, with $402 million to be distributed in Fiscal Year 2023.
Yee also helped launch the Financial Education Portal on the treasurer’s website, which offers free resources to Arizonans to help improve their financial knowledge and skills. As the chair of the Financial Literacy Task Force, she has also supported legislation that requires Arizona high schools to teach one semester of financial education before students graduate.
Arizona’s Education Savings Plan, a state-sponsored 529 plan that helps families save for future education, topped $2 billion in assets just 11 months into Yee’s administration and more than 21,000 new accounts have been opened since Yee became treasurer.
A major point of tension in the treasurer’s race has been the state’s policy to end investments in businesses that boycott Israel. Yee has divested $143 million from Unilever, the parent company of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, for not complying with state laws that protect Israel from boycotts.
Quezada, on the other hand, helped organize a screening of “Boycott” at the state Capitol, a documentary film that challenges policies that limit companies from boycotting, divesting from, or sanctioning Israel. Quezada has also supported the hashtag #FreePalestine on Twitter, a hashtag for content hostile to Israel.
In response to questions submitted by the Arizona Republic, the candidates emphasized the importance of sound investing practices. Quezada said that safety and sound executive management were key, while Yee pointed to her own record of earning over $2 billion while in office.
“The guiding principles for the investments of the Treasurer’s Office under my leadership have been Safety before Liquidity before Yield,” Yee said. “I will never lose sight of the fact that the funds I invest as the treasurer of Arizona belong to the taxpayer, so we must produce the highest possible yields on our performance.”

Exercise During Chemo Helps Your Heart Lungs Recover HealthDay News
Exercise During Chemo Helps Your Heart, Lungs Recover – HealthDay News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/exercise-during-chemo-helps-your-heart-lungs-recover-healthday-news/
TUESDAY, Oct. 18, 2022 (HealthDay News) — When you are getting chemotherapy, exercise may be the last thing on your mind. Now, new research suggests it should be the first.
Exercising during chemotherapy is safe, improves long-term cardiac and respiratory function and may help ease some of the ravages of treatment, Dutch researchers report. If you can’t exercise during chemotherapy, then you should start after treatment to get your heart function back to normal, they added.
“These findings suggest that the most optimal timing of physical exercise is during chemotherapy,” said senior study author Dr. Annemiek Walenkamp, a medical oncologist at the University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands.
“However, initiating an exercise program after chemotherapy is a viable alternative when exercising during chemotherapy is not possible,” Walenkamp said. “We hope health care providers guide patients to engage in exercise interventions during anti-cancer treatment.”
During chemotherapy, peak oxygen uptake, a predictor of heart health, typically declines by up to 25%, the researchers noted. Cancer treatment can also affect quality of life and cardiac and respiratory fitness. Not only that, it can trigger extreme fatigue and cardiovascular death, they added.
For the study, Walenkamp and her colleagues looked at the benefits of exercise among patients in a tailored exercise program. The patients suffered from breast cancer, colon cancer, testicular cancer or non-Hodgkin lymphoma. All were to undergo chemotherapy. The participants were randomly selected to take part in a 24-week exercise program either during or after treatment.
Exercise included a stationary bicycle, weight machines, free weight lifting and badminton.
In the end, the researchers found that those who exercised during chemotherapy felt less tired and exercised more. In addition, they also had better heart and breathing function and greater muscle strength.
Those who began exercising after three months of chemotherapy also showed some improvement. Both groups were back to their normal cardiorespiratory fitness one year after completing the exercise program, the researchers found.
The report was published Oct. 18 in the journal JACC: CardioOncology.
“This study is an important addition to the field of exercise oncology,” said Dr. Eric Yang, director of UCLA’s cardio-oncology program. He was not part of the study, but reviewed the findings.
“Exercise has yielded many benefits in our field of cardiology, and given the advances made in cancer treatments where more and more patients are living longer and surviving with their disease, it is important to evaluate strategies to optimize their heart health and quality of life,” Yang said.
Although cancer treatments now have less toxic effects, treatment can still damage the heart, he explained.
“Because of many common side effects, such as fatigue, low blood cell counts, nausea and low energy, this directly and indirectly affects one’s ability to normally exercise and maintain a daily routine, and thus affects cardiovascular reserve and health,” Yang said.
Exercise is important to help counter the negative effects on the heart that cancer treatment can cause, he pointed out.
“It is important to not throw heart health to the wind, now that more and more evidence is emerging that these few years of treatment can put them at increased risk of cardiovascular events in the long term,” Yang said.
Cancer treatment is changing, and patients are advised to be concerned with their overall health, not just their cancer, he said.
“The old era where it used to be where you were told to just focus on your cancer treatments, eat what you want, rest, is becoming outdated,” Yang said. “This, amongst many other studies, has shown it is safe to exercise, with some caution towards high-intensity regimens.”
He hopes patients will maintain as much of a healthy lifestyle as they can during chemotherapy.
“I encourage patients to maintain as much normalcy as possible and tolerated during their treatments,” Yang said. “I understand that they cannot necessarily exercise to the same degree as they used to before their cancer treatments, but I emphasize to them and their families that exercise and healthy eating is paramount and will be a great investment to their quality of life in the long run. And, as this study demonstrates, if you can’t exercise during your treatments, start after — it’s better late than never.”

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed Tips For Beginners GameSpot
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed Tips For Beginners – GameSpot https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/ghostbusters-spirits-unleashed-tips-for-beginners-gamespot/
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is the latest asymmetrical experience to grace our gaming libraries. Acting like a sequel of sorts to the most recent film, it features a ton of fan-favorite references. It also sports the typical PvP elements this genre is known for. The player controlling the ghost will need to haunt a given location while avoiding their proton pack-carrying rivals. The four Ghostbusters, on the other hand, will need to work together to trap the ghost player in a manner that doesn’t result in major property damage.
Whether you’re looking to scare the pants off NPCs or hunt down ghosts with friends, victory doesn’t come easy. Ghosts have a nice arsenal of tricks to contend with. The same goes for the Ghostbusters and their upgradable equipment. The players that learn how to utilize these items/abilities at the right time will usually come out on top. Below are a few tips that’ll help you get through the beginner stages of Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed.
Ghostbusters
Coordinate attacks
Like other games of this ilk, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed encourages teamwork over going rogue. It’s obvious, based on the four-player set up, that each ghostbuster should do their part to help trap the ghost. What isn’t so obvious is how one should go about working within the group; crossing the streams is only half the battle.
There are multiple factors to reckon with during a given match. One thing you’ll need to remember early on is that it takes a decent amount of time to swap between your P.K.E. Meter and proton pack. Because of this, it can be tricky to tether a ghost with your beam once they’ve been located without help.
Teamwork is key in catching ghosts.
The P.K.E. meter is used to hunt down the ghosts and their rifts–portals that allow them to respawn after being captured. It can also be used to stun a ghost, knocking them out of a possessed person/object, essentially making them vulnerable for a few seconds. Manually switching to your proton pack takes too long as the stun will wear off before you can start tethering. Tossing out your trap first speeds up the process because that action auto-switches your held item to the pack. But neither option is as quick as letting someone else toss out a trap or start blasting with their pack; it’s possible to trap a ghost within seconds of stunning them if everyone is properly prepared to do their part. Basically, you’ll want to coordinate your attacks whenever you can.
Share the stream
In Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, there are some aspects to the tethering system that aren’t explained during the tutorial. The main one being that the first person to tether a ghost is in charge of their movement.
In order to tether a ghost, you’ll need to shoot them with your proton beam long enough to wrap them up. It’s at that point that you can start guiding them towards a trap to be captured. The first person to tether the ghost is the one moving them around. The others are there to offer support by increasing the time in which the ghost is tether; they basically make it harder for them to escape. This is important to know for two reasons. The first has to do with your team composition. It’s easier to guide the ghost to a particular trap if you know who is controlling them. If teammate A is the first to tether the ghost, I know that I should toss my trap towards them and not teammate B.
The other reason has to do with overheating proton packs. You can only continuously blast the ghost for so long before needing to vent your pack. This will release the ghost if you’re the only person there. However, if you were the first person to tether them and another player joins in, you’ll be able to pass the reins over to that teammate by letting go. The main tether is passed on to the next player(s) based on the order in which they started shooting, allowing you time to “reload.”
Remember the gear cart
It’s important to remember the gear cart. Located near the starting position of a given map, the gear cart is where you’ll find extra items, namely replacement traps and powerful secondary gadgets.
The main reason you’ll want to remember the equipment cart is because of your traps. If a ghost destroys one during play, the only way to get another is to trek back to the cart. This can be a pain on some of the bigger maps, especially when you’re first starting out. Making sure to mentally mark the location is key early on.
Some gadgets will need to be unlocked before becoming available.
The other reason you should prioritize the gear cart is because of the game’s secondary gadgets. These items can significantly improve your chances of catching the ghost. The V.A.D., for example, is a grappling hook that can quickly pull you up to a higher floor while The Ionizer Pods can slow ghosts that are caught in their particle clouds. Using them in tandem, it’s possible to prevent a ghost from fleeing before a teammate (using the V.A.D.) can quickly ascend to your location.
Calm NPCs
In Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, it’s a ghost’s job to haunt a place. This is done in several different ways. One of which is scaring NPCs enough to send them running from the building. In order to counter this, the ghostbusters will need to reassure these people that everything will be okay.
Let them know you’re on the job!
Normally, this is done by walking up to a scared NPC and talking to them, prompting a quick-time event. All you have to do is talk to them for the duration. If you time your button presses so that the bar is activated over the green areas of the wheel, however, you’ll give that NPC a bit of shielding. This temporary layer of protection will make it harder for them to be scared in the future.
The great thing about this feature is that you don’t have to wait until a given NPC is about to lose their cool. You can speak to them when they’re completely calm, granting them the shield from the start.
Complete side hustles
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed has an account progression system. A lot of the items (and ghost variants) are locked until you’ve leveled up. While most of your XP will come from how well you do in matches, there are ways to help speed up this process, one of which is the activation of contracts known as Side Hustles. Separate from daily challenges–only one can be activated at a time–these side ventures often require you to complete multiple steps before they’re done. That said, they offer a lot of XP. Some even give cosmetic rewards as well.
Another way to speed up the leveling process is by collecting spores, mold, and fungi found scattered around the game’s maps. Collecting these easy-to-find but often overlooked items will net you bonus points at the end of a match. The more you collect, the more you’ll earn. What makes this worthwhile, though, are the collection-based thresholds. Once you hit 25%, for instance, you’ll get a one time bonus of 10,000 XP.
Ghosts
Read the room
When playing as a ghost, it’s your job to fully haunt a place. This is reflected in two haunt meters located at the top of the screen; one is for the entire building and one is for the room you’re currently in. The goal is to get the building to 100% haunted and escape the premises before the ghostbusters can catch you.
There are few different ways to accomplish this goal. Scaring NPCs and haunting furniture–making them move on their own–will certainly do the trick. The thing to keep in mind, though, is that the overall building percentage is tied to its individual rooms. You can scare random folks all over the map and slowly move the needle. Or you can scare everyone out of a given area, significantly speeding up the haunting process.
This, of course, is easier said than done. With the ghostbusters chasing you about, focusing on one room can be dangerous; you’re going to have to flee the area from time to time. To combat this, make a note of the room’s percentage and leave. Haunt somewhere else. Just make sure to come back to that room to finish up. Again, it’s better to fully haunt one or two rooms at a time as opposed to randomly scaring NPCs scattered about the map.
Break line of sight
Thanks to the ghostbusters’ P.K.E. Meter, it can be hard to hide from them. They’ll track you all over the map. The good news for ghost players though, is that this gadget isn’t as accurate as you’d expect. It has some limitations, mostly notably the inability to differentiate between floors.
The P.K.E. Meter will lead the ghostbusters to your location eventually. If you manage to get away from them, the best thing to do is to break their line of sight and then change floors; either go up to the second story or down to the basement level. The P.K.E. Meter will note the direction you went in but not what floor you’re on. This will give you much needed time to fool your pursuers. By haunting a few items–making them give off your essence–before leaving the area, you’ll send the ghostbusters after random objects instead of you after reaching the correct floor.
Don’t panic
It’s important not to panic when you’ve been ensnared. There are quick-time events that can help you detether yourself, one of which activates right before you’re sucked into a trap. Make sure to pay attention to the onscreen prompts. The last thing you’d want to do is to wildly button-mash any and everything as you’re being attacked.
Another thing you can do, once you’ve broken free, is to steal a ghostbuster’s trap. If you’re fast enough, you’ll be able to snag it and escape with it in tow. Once away from your attackers you can then destroy the trap, forcing that player to return to the gear cart for another.
Protect the rifts
If the ghostbusters do manage to capture you, all hope isn’t lost. As a ghost, you’re given three rifts to use as spawn points per match. M...

(Kitco News) – The world’s largest retailer Walmart is keeping a close eye on the adoption of cryptocurrencies, according to Suresh Kumar, the firm’s global chief technology officer, who suggested that “crypto will become an important part of how customers transact” for both physical and virtual goods.
Kumar made the comments during a discussion at the Yahoo Finance All Markets Summit on Oct. 17, where the CTO referred to cryptocurrencies as a “major” area of disruption in the payments sector.
“I think that there are three major areas of disruption. Crypto falls in sort of the middle of it,” he said, adding that “the way in which customers are getting inspired and discovering products” is changing.
Kumar explained that cryptocurrencies are primed to contribute toward technological disruption in product discovery, payment and delivery.
“When you specifically talk about crypto, it is going to be about discovery of products, whether it is physical or virtual inside, either the Metaverse or upfront, and then how people transact.”
The Metaverse, in particular, is of high interest to Walmart, as evidenced by the launch of ‘Walmart Land’ in the Roblox Metaverse in late September. Walmart Land is host to a variety of virtual experiences, including games, a DJ booth and a Ferris wheel, and virtual merchandise products called “verch” for users’ avatars.
See Walmart like never before
Walmart Land is our new world on #ROBLOX with fun & games for all. From film to fashion — whatever you’re into, let’s have some fun with it. Come for the inspo, stay for the verch & live performances.

“I have talked before about the way in which customers are getting inspired and discovering products – that is changing – and part of that is going to happen in the Metaverse,” Kumar said.
The CTO went on to suggest that marketing to customers through the Metaverse, live streams and social media apps are going to be a main focus of the company and that crypto could be a key payment option in these areas.
“We want to make sure that we make it as friction-free for customers to be able to transact and to be able to buy, and how they are able to derive value out of it. And that is where – I think a lot of the disruption is going to start happening in terms of different payment methods, different payment options,” he said. “Crypto is going to continue to play a very important role in that.”
Along with its developments with Roblox, Walmart filed seven patents at the end of 2021 that deal with NFTs and the Metaverse.

USS Chancellorsville Conducts Port Visit In Manila – Navy.mil https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/uss-chancellorsville-conducts-port-visit-in-manila-navy-mil/
18 October 2022
From Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin Stack, Commander, Task Force 70 / Carrier Strike Group 5
The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) departed Manila, Philippines, following a scheduled port visit, Oct. 18.
This routine port call highlights the U.S. continued cooperation with partner countries and our strong support for the region.
“We are honored to receive such a warm welcome in this beautiful country,” said Capt. Edward Angelinas, Chancellorsville commanding officer. “This port visit provided our Sailors a great experience as well as an opportunity for routine repairs. Our Sailors were happy to participate in professional engagements and community service projects while enjoying the Filipino culture.”
During the port visit, Sailors were able to explore the surrounding areas through tours sponsored by the ship’s Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR), as well as connect with the people of the Philippines through a community relations (COMREL) event with “Gentle Hands Orphanage,” where Sailors lead games and played activities with orphans of Manila. Gentle Hands Orphanage is a child and youth welfare agency meant to be on the front lines of rescue and rehabilitation of the medical, social, psychological, and educational needs of at-risk children and youth, advocating for the rights of children.
“I am honored to have had the opportunity to participate in an event that increases the morale of children and fosters a healthy relationship between the U.S. and our allies,” said Religious Program Specialist 1st Class Devin Workman, from Bellingham, Washington. “Being able to interact with the kids, to see them share their stories and see their resilience was a real inspiration which left an impact that I will carry for the rest of my life.”
Seaman Apprentice Schuyler Olivar, from Manila, Philippines, was one of few Sailors who was able to spend time in his home country during the port visit.
“It was great to be home,” said Olivar. “I haven’t seen some of my relatives since 2014, so it was quite nice to see them. I really missed the people here in the Philippines, they are extremely welcoming and friendly. I’ll tell you, the food is absolutely delicious. The first thing I ordered was my favorite dish, sisig, which is an amazing Filipino food. I’m blessed to have had the visit and I can’t wait to come back.”
USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) alongside the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) departed the Philippines to continue operations in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
Chancellorsville is working as part of the Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group and has operated in the South China Sea, East China Sea, Sea of Japan and Philippine Sea.
Chancellorsville is forward-deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet in support of security and stability in the Indo-Pacific and is assigned to Commander, Task Force 70, a combat-ready force that protects and defends the collective maritime interest of its allies and partners in the region.
11 More Crash Deaths Are Linked To Automated-Tech Vehicles KRQE News 13
11 More Crash Deaths Are Linked To Automated-Tech Vehicles – KRQE News 13 https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/11-more-crash-deaths-are-linked-to-automated-tech-vehicles-krqe-news-13/
DETROIT (AP) — Eleven additional people were killed in U.S. crashes involving vehicles that were using automated driving systems during a four-month period earlier this year, according to newly released government data, part of an alarming pattern of incidents linked to the technology.
Ten of the deaths involved vehicles made by Tesla, though it is unclear from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s data whether the technology itself was at fault or whether driver error might have been responsible. The 11th death involved a Ford pickup truck.
The deaths included four crashes involving motorcycles that occurred during the spring and summer: Two in Florida and one each in California and Utah. Safety advocates note that the deaths of motorcyclists in crashes involving Tesla vehicles using automated driver-assist systems such as Autopilot have been increasing.
The new fatal crashes are documented in a database that NHTSA is building in an effort to broadly assess the safety of automated driving systems, which, led by Tesla, have been growing in use. Tesla alone has more than 830,000 vehicles on U.S. roads with the systems. The agency is requiring auto and tech companies to report all crashes involving self-driving vehicles as well as autos with driver assist systems that can take over some driving tasks from people.
The 11 new fatal crashes, reported from mid-May through September, were included in statistics that the agency released Monday. In June, the agency released data it had collected from July of last year through May 15.
The figures that were released in June showed that six people died in crashes involving the automated systems, and five were seriously hurt. Of the deaths, five occurred in Teslas and one a Ford. In each case, the database says that advanced driver assist systems were in use at the time of the crash.
Michael Brooks, executive director of the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety, said he is baffled by NHTSA’s continued investigations and by what he called a general lack of action since problems with Autopilot began surfacing back in 2016.
“I think there’s a pretty clear pattern of bad behavior on the part of Tesla when it comes to obeying the edicts of the (federal) safety act, and NHTSA is just sitting there,” he said. “How many more deaths do we need to see of motorcyclists?”
Brooks noted that the Tesla crashes are victimizing more people who are not in the Tesla vehicles.
“You’re seeing innocent people who had no choice in the matter being killed or injured,” he said.
A message was left Tuesday seeking a response from NHTSA.
Tesla’s crash number may appear elevated because it uses telematics to monitor its vehicles and obtain real-time crash reports. Other automakers lack such capability, so their crash reports may emerge more slowly or may not be reported at all, NHTSA has said.
NHTSA has been investigating Autopilot since August of last year after a string of crashes since 2018 in which Teslas collided with emergency vehicles parked along roadways with flashing lights on. That investigation moved a step closer to a recall in June, when it was upgraded to what is called an engineering analysis.
In documents, the agency raised questions about the system, finding that the technology was being used in areas where its capabilities are limited and that many drivers weren’t taking steps to avoid crashes despite warnings from the vehicle.
NHTSA also reported that it has documented 16 crashes in which vehicles with automated systems in use hit emergency vehicles and trucks that were displaying warning signs, causing 15 injuries and one death.
The National Transportation Safety Board, which also has investigated some of the Tesla crashes dating to 2016, has recommended that NHTSA and Tesla limit Autopilot’s use to areas where it can safely operate. The NTSB also recommended that NHTSA require Tesla to improve its systems to ensure that drivers are paying attention. NHTSA has yet to act on the recommendations. (The NTSB can make only recommendations to other federal agencies.)
Messages were left Tuesday seeking comment from Tesla. At the company’s artificial intelligence day in September, CEO Elon Musk asserted that, based on the rate of crashes and total miles driven, Tesla’s automated systems were safer than human drivers — a notion that some safety experts dispute.
“At the point of which you believe that adding autonomy reduces injury and death, I think you have a moral obligation to deploy it,” Musk said. “Even though you’re going to get sued and blamed by a lot of people. Because the people whose lives you saved don’t know that their lives were saved. And the people who do occasionally die or get injured, they definitely know, or their state does, that it was, whatever, there was a problem with Autopilot.”
Teslas with automated systems have driven more than 3 million vehicles on the road, Musk said.
“That’s a lot of miles driven every day. And it’s not going to be perfect. But what matters is that it is very clearly safer than not deploying it.”
In addition to Autopilot, Tesla sells “Full Self-Driving” systems, though it says the vehicles cannot drive themselves and that motorists must be ready to intervene at all times.
The number of deaths involving automated vehicles is small compared with the overall number of traffic deaths in the U.S. Nearly 43,000 people were killed on U.S. roads last year, the highest number in 16 years, after Americans returned to the roads as the pandemic eased. Authorities blamed reckless behavior such as speeding and driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol for much of the increase.
Winter Chill Engulfs Eastern U.S. As Summer Warmth Swells In West The Washington Post
Winter Chill Engulfs Eastern U.S. As Summer Warmth Swells In West – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/winter-chill-engulfs-eastern-u-s-as-summer-warmth-swells-in-west-the-washington-post/
The nation is divided, atmospherically speaking, with clashing air masses battling it out over the Lower 48. Temperatures over the eastern United States are plummeting to values more typically seen in December, with readings 15 to 20 degrees below average. The opposite is true in California and the Pacific Northwest, where summerlike warmth has swelled north and set records.
Over 100 million Americans in the Midwest, Mid-South and Mid-Atlantic are under frost and freeze alerts signifying an early-season cold-air outbreak that will spell an end to the growing season. Freeze warnings, which include the entirety of Arkansas and Tennessee, have been expanded all the way to the gulf coasts of Mississippi and Alabama to account for lows in the 30s on Tuesday night.
Dozens of record lows were set from Minnesota to Texas on Tuesday morning, with temperatures dipping into the teens and 20s. Des Moines, Omaha and Kansas City were among locations that set record lows.
Over the Great Lakes, meanwhile, lake-effect snows have been delivering an early dose of winter’s worst. A full-fledged snowstorm — sourced from the waters of Lake Superior — is burying parts of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, with additional snows emanating from Lakes Erie and Ontario.
Nearly 30,000 power outages have been reported in the Upper Peninsula as double-digit snowfall totals and strong winds have snapped tree limbs and power lines.
Snowflakes were also spotted in Chicago on Monday, while Madison, Wis., posted its earliest measurable snow in 32 years with a light dusting.
On the West Coast, in contrast, the start of the workweek featured highs in the 80s and 90s. A spattering of wildfires erupted amid the brief warm-up, with air-quality issues becoming a problem as smoke wafts over Oregon and Washington.
Things are about to change in big ways, however — the atmosphere will pull a 180-degree switcheroo. A damp, chilly autumn pattern will set its sights on the northwestern United States by the end of this week, while the core of unseasonable warmth builds eastward. It’s a classic example of the atmosphere’s caprice, with roller-coaster changes in store.
Instigating the dynamic contrast is a highly amplified, or wavy, jet stream. It’s surging north over the western United States, allowing ridging, or the establishment of high pressure. That deflects inclement weather up into Canada.
In the East, there’s a different story. A bowling-ball upper-level low — or pocket of high-altitude cold air, low pressure and spin nestled within a dip in the jet stream — is parked over the Great Lakes. It’s slowly inching into Ontario. Frigid air is spilling south within that jet stream dip, with freezing temperatures all the way down to the Gulf Coast.
On the backside of the low, northerly winds passing over the warm waters of the Great Lakes are inducing lake-effect snowfall along with giant waves predicted to reach up to 25 feet on Lake Superior on Tuesday.
Tuesday morning brought record-cold temperatures from the Upper Midwest to the mid-South. Des Moines dipped to 21 degrees Tuesday morning, setting a record for the day and representing the chilliest weather this early in the season since 1987. Kansas City, Mo., also broke a record morning low at 25 degrees, and Omaha snagged a record low at 16 degrees, the coldest on record this early in the season. Kansas City’s morning temperature would have been an average low for Dec. 12.
Wind chills in Minnesota dipped below zero Tuesday morning.
The core of the cold is on the move eastward.
In the East, high temperatures in the 40s and 50s will be common on Tuesday and Wednesday. Chicago’s projected high is around 43 degrees Tuesday and 48 on Wednesday, compared with an average mid-October high of about 62 degrees. Highs in Detroit are predicted to hover in the mid-40s through Wednesday, with rain showers; the average there is also in the lower to mid-60s.
Columbus, Ohio, normally would be around 65 degrees; both Tuesday and Wednesday, it will be close to 45 degrees. And in Nashville; Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia; and New York City, it’s the same thing — highs in the 50s through Wednesday.
Lows on Wednesday and Thursday morning will be in the 20s and 30s across most of the eastern half of the nation.
To the west, temperatures have been spiking. Calgary, Alberta, jumped to 77.4 degrees on Monday, beating out the previous record of 75.9 degrees. According to Kyle Britain, a meteorologist at the Weather Network, that’s a degree or two warmer than the average high temperature on July 16.
Seattle experienced a similarly extreme anomaly. On Sunday, the city hit 88 degrees, the second-warmest October day on record in nearly 130 years of observation, and the warmest day this late in the season on record. Monday was 21 degrees cooler, peaking at 67 degrees, but it was still warmer than normal — it proved the fifth-warmest Oct. 17 in the past 78 years.
The hot, dry weather allowed a number of wildfires to erupt, pouring smoke into the skies over the Pacific Northwest. Now Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia in Washington and Portland, Ore., are under air-quality alerts.
“Everyone, especially sensitive groups, should limit time spent outdoors, avoid strenuous activities outdoors, and choose light indoor activities,” the National Weather Service warned. The smoky conditions are forecast to ease by Friday.
Like a seesaw, warmth and cold will swap places in the contiguous United States. The jet stream will completely reverse its positioning, swinging a strong cold front through the Northwest on Friday as warm high pressure builds in the East.
“Mountainous regions will experience the first snowflakes of the season,” wrote the National Weather Service in Portland. “Snow levels will drop between 3000-4000 feet Saturday night into Sunday morning.”
Over the eastern half of the country, highs in the 70s will return, including in some places that recently saw snow. It appears that mildness will linger thorough much of next week.
