Meatpacker JBS To Close U.S. Plant-Based Foods Business – Reuters https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/meatpacker-jbs-to-close-u-s-plant-based-foods-business-reuters/ CHICAGO, Oct 3 (Reuters) – Brazilian meatpacker JBS SA (JBSS3.SA) is closing its U.S. plant-based foods business, Planterra Foods, after about two years, the company said on Monday. The closure signals increasing troubles in the plant-based protein sector, where U.S. sales are flattening. read more Colorado-based Planterra sold fake meat under the Ozo brand, but JBS will now focus on its plant-based operations in Brazil and Europe, said Nikki Richardson, spokesperson for JBS USA. European and Brazilian operations “continue to gain market share and expand their respective customer bases,” she said. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The sector has come under pressure because meat alternatives do not taste good enough and prices are too high, said Gary Stibel, chief executive of the New England Consulting Group, which works on consumer products. He said JBS made a good decision to shut Planterra. “Everybody and her sister thinks they can make money in this business and they can’t,” Stibel said. “Eventually it will be a good business for a few players. Today, it is a sinkhole for many folks that are throwing good money after bad, chasing too little demand with way too much supply.” This summer, Beyond Meat Inc (BYND.O) lowered its revenue forecast for the year and announced job cuts as rising inflation hurt efforts to make its pricier plant-based meat more affordable. read more Separately, Canadian pork processor Maple Leaf Foods (MFI.TO) has reduced the size of its plant-based business, Greenleaf Foods, by 25%. The value of all meat alternatives sold in the United States – including fresh and fully cooked products and faux seafood – rose by 1.1% in the year ending Aug. 27 to about $963 million, NielsenIQ said. That compared to growth of 8.1% over the same period in 2021 and 44.8% in that period in 2020. For fresh meat alternatives, U.S. sales dropped by 6.8% in the year ending Aug. 27 to about $254 million, compared to a year earlier, NielsenIQ said. Sales in the category climbed 28.9% over that same period from 2020 to 2021. Algorithms Are Making Decisions About Health Care, Which May Only Worsen Medical Racism | News & Commentary | American Civil Liberties Union – ACLU https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/algorithms-are-making-decisions-about-health-care-which-may-only-worsen-medical-racism-news-commentary-american-civil-liberties-union-aclu/ Artificial intelligence (AI) and algorithmic decision-making systems — algorithms that analyze massive amounts of data and make predictions about the future — are increasingly affecting Americans’ daily lives. People are compelled to include buzzwords in their resumes to get past AI-driven hiring software. Algorithms are deciding who will get housing or financial loan opportunities. And biased testing software is forcing students of color and students with disabilities to grapple with increased anxiety that they may be locked out of their exams or flagged for cheating. But there’s another frontier of AI and algorithms that should worry us greatly: the use of these systems in medical care and treatment. The use of AI and algorithmic decision-making systems in medicine are increasing even though current regulation may be insufficient to detect harmful racial biases in these tools. Details about the tools’ development are largely unknown to clinicians and the public — a lack of transparency that threatens to automate and worsen racism in the health care system. Last week, the FDA issued guidance significantly broadening the scope of the tools it plans to regulate. This broadening guidance emphasizes that more must be done to combat bias and promote equity amid the growing number and increasing use of AI and algorithmic tools. Bias in Medical and Public Health Tools In 2019, a bombshell study found that a clinical algorithm many hospitals were using to decide which patients need care was showing racial bias — Black patients had to be deemed much sicker than white patients to be recommended for the same care. This happened because the algorithm had been trained on past data on health care spending, which reflects a history in which Black patients had less to spend on their health care compared to white patients, due to longstanding wealth and income disparities. While this algorithm’s bias was eventually detected and corrected, the incident raises the question of how many more clinical and medical tools may be similarly discriminatory. Another algorithm, created to determine how many hours of aid Arkansas residents with disabilities would receive each week, was criticized after making extreme cuts to in-home care. Some residents attributed extreme disruptions to their lives and even hospitalization to the sudden cuts. A resulting lawsuit found that several errors in the algorithm — errors in how it characterized the medical needs of people with certain disabilities — were directly to blame for inappropriate cuts made. Despite this outcry, the group that developed the flawed algorithm still creates tools used in health care settings in nearly half of U.S. states as well as internationally. One recent study found that an AI tool trained on medical images, like x-rays and CT scans, had unexpectedly learned to discern patients’ self-reported race. It learned to do this even when it was trained only with the goal of helping clinicians diagnose patient images. This technology’s ability to tell patients’ race — even when their doctor cannot — could be abused in the future, or unintentionally direct worse care to communities of color without detection or intervention. Tools Used in Health Care Can Escape Regulation Some algorithms used in the clinical space are severely under-regulated in the U.S. The U.S Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and its subagency the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are tasked with regulating medical devices — with devices ranging from a tongue depressor to a pacemaker and now, medical AI systems. While some of these medical devices (including AI) and tools that aid physicians in treatment and diagnosis are regulated, other algorithmic decision-making tools used in clinical, administrative, and public health settings — such as those that predict risk of mortality, likelihood of readmission, and in-home care needs — are not required to be reviewed or regulated by the FDA or any regulatory body. This lack of oversight can lead to biased algorithms being used widely by hospitals and state public health systems, contributing to increased discrimination against Black and Brown patients, people with disabilities, and other marginalized communities. In some cases, this failure to regulate can lead to wasted money and lives lost. One such AI tool, developed to detect sepsis early, is used by more than 170 hospitals and health systems. But a recent study revealed the tool failed to predict this life-threatening illness in 67 percent of patients who developed it, and generated false sepsis alerts on thousands of patients who did not. Acknowledging this failure was the result of under-regulation, the FDA’s new guidelines point to these tools as examples of products it will now regulate as medical devices. The FDA’s approach to regulating drugs, which involves publicly shared data that is scrutinized by review panels for adverse effects and events contrasts to its approach to regulating medical AI and algorithmic tools. Regulating medical AI presents a novel issue and will require considerations that differ from those applicable to the hardware devices the FDA is used to regulating. These devices include pulse oximeters, thermal thermometers, and scalp electrodes—each of which have been found to reflect racial or ethnic bias in how well they function in subgroups. News of these biases only underscores how vital it is to properly regulate these tools and ensure they don’t perpetuate bias against vulnerable racial and ethnic groups. A Lack of Transparency/Biased Data While the FDA suggests that device manufacturers test their devices for racial and ethnic biases before marketing to the general public, this step is not required. Perhaps more important than assessments after a device is developed is transparency during its development. A STAT+ News study found many AI tools approved or cleared by the FDA do not include information about the diversity of the data on which the AI was trained, and that the number of these tools being cleared is increasing rapidly. Another study found AI tools “consistently and selectively under-diagnosed under-served patient populations,” finding the under-diagnosis rate was higher for marginalized communities who disproportionately don’t have access to medical care. This is unacceptable when these tools may make decisions that have life or death consequences. The Path Forward Equitable treatment by the health care system is a civil rights issue. The COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the many ways in which existing societal inequities produce health care inequities — a complex reality that humans can attempt to comprehend, but that is difficult to accurately reflect in an algorithm. The promise of AI in medicine was that it could help remove bias from a deeply biased institution and improve health care outcomes; instead, it threatens to automate this bias. Policy changes and collaboration among key stakeholders, including state and federal regulators, medical, public health, and clinical advocacy groups and organizations, are needed to address these gaps and inefficiencies. To start, as detailed in a new ACLU white paper: Public reporting of demographic information should be required. The FDA should require an impact assessment of any differences in device performance by racial or ethnic subgroup as part of the clearance or approval process. Device labels should reflect the results of this impact assessment. The FTC should collaborate with HHS and other federal bodies to establish best practices that device manufacturers not under FDA regulation should follow to lessen the risk of racial or ethnic bias in their tools. Rather than learn of racial and ethnic bias embedded in clinical and medical algorithms and devices from bombshell publications revealing what amounts to medical and clinical malpractice, the HHS and FDA and other stakeholders must work to ensure that medical racism becomes a relic of the past rather than a certainty of the future.

A Coastal Drive Along Americas Superior Shoreline AARP
A Coastal Drive Along America’s Superior Shoreline – AARP https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/a-coastal-drive-along-americas-superior-shoreline-aarp/ Getty/AARP One of America’s most dramatic coastal road trips isn’t alongside the Atlantic or the Pacific, but rather along the wild North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. From the port city of Duluth, an industrial shipping hub since the 19th century, Highway 61 skirts the rocky shoreline for 151 miles up to the Canadian border, offering a round-trip jaunt that takes in one of the most iconic lighthouses in America, a stunning overlook 300 feet above the crystal-clear waters of the lake, and a picturesque harbor that will make you think you’re in Nova Scotia, not Minnesota. The roadside landscape is one giant boreal forest broken only by the occasional, dramatic glimpse of the lake or of a river cascading down into it, often producing waves large enough to surf. Paddling and hiking opportunities entice at nearly every mile, but with charming towns and roadside attractions along the way, it’s easy to make the trip as adventurous or as laid back as you want. Duluth has a small regional airport with roughly half a dozen flights daily, but it’s better to fly into the much larger international airport in Minneapolis, which has more flight options and, likely, lower fares. Rent a car there and you’ll be in Duluth, 158 miles north, in about 2 1/2 hours. In autumn, when the leaves are in peak color, bypass Interstate 35, the fastest route, in favor of Wisconsin’s winding Highway 35, which you can pick up across the St. Croix River near Stillwater and Oak Park Heights. This scenic route will add an hour to the drive, but the reward is some of the nation’s best leaf peeping in a relaxed, forested corner of Wisconsin.  Getty Images Duluth Day 1: Duluth to Silver Bay (55 miles) Duluth is worth its own long weekend, but to get a flavor for the city in a half day, head to Canal Park, a peninsula between Lake Superior and the St. Louis River. There, old factory buildings have been repurposed as shops, restaurants and hotels, and a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk, called the Lakewalk, delivers stunning views of Lake Superior and the iconic Duluth Harbor North Pierhead Light that marks the entry to the Duluth Ship Canal. From the boardwalk, you can listen to the waves crashing against the nearby jetty and feel the brisk air coming off the cold Superior water.  For a better sense of what’s under the water’s surface, walk 15 minutes past the William A. Irvin Museum, a historic iron and ore freight ship you can tour, to the Great Lakes Aquarium, which is dedicated to freshwater ecosystems, like those in and around the Great Lakes. It’s a perfect activity for multigenerational travel, serving as a fun, informative primer on the landscape you’re about to traverse.      Come lunchtime, grab a sandwich at Northern Waters Smokehaus, near the Lakewalk. The deli-style restaurant smokes its fish in-house, from Atlantic salmon to Lake Superior trout and whitefish, as well as other meats. And the price is reasonable for such exceptional food. When you’re ready to leave town, you’re only going 55 miles up the coastline on Highway 61, so take your time. About 40 miles on, at Gooseberry Falls State Park, wander along accessible paths to admire the cascades of the Gooseberry River flowing into Lake Superior. Another 6 miles farther up the road, don’t miss the Split Rock Lighthouse, a dramatic brick structure perched atop a 130-foot cliff. The building, in service from 1910 to 1969, is one of the country’s most visited lighthouses. Paved paths and ramps lead up to the visitor center and into the caretaker’s house and fog signal building; from there, you climb 22 steps to reach the observation deck. The best view of the lighthouse, however, is from the park’s campground near the lakeshore. The walk from the campground trailhead to the beach isn’t suitable for wheelchairs because it’s a mix of gravel and dirt, but it’s an easy amble — roughly a quarter of a mile — to the beach and stunning lighthouse views.        Where to stay: For a basic lodging option with wheelchair-accessible rooms, book the moderately priced AmericInn by Wyndham in Silver Bay, roughly 10 miles up the road from Split Rock Lighthouse. Alamy Stock Photo Grand Marais Day 2: Silver Bay to Grand Marais (55 miles) Begin the day with a short 2-mile drive on 61 to Palisade Head, a stunning rock formation towering above Lake Superior. The winding, steep road up to the overlook is paved and thus manageable for most any passenger vehicle, and it delivers dramatic lake views. You’ll likely do most of your gawking from the car because the walking paths aren’t paved and aren’t for the faint of heart, traversing the edges of 300-foot cliffs that are popular breeding grounds for peregrine falcons. Standing at a cliff’s edge, feeling the wind in your face from one of the highest vantage points for miles, you’ll quickly understand why the raptors soar above the headland here.       For a water-level view of the lake, head to the main entrance at Tettegouche State Park, less than 2 miles up the road. The visitor center offers a good respite for a bathroom break; it also offers a quick walk down to a pebbled beach, overlooking where the Baptism River flows into Superior, occasionally creating small standing waves, depending on the river flow. The park is home to a series of waterfalls on the river, most notably High Falls, and 23 miles of trails (most are moderate to difficult, but many are doable for people accustomed to hiking).          Another 51 miles of driving brings you to Grand Marais, a lakeside town with one of the North Shore’s most bucolic harbors. You’ll see lots of docked sailboats, as well as seagulls squawking on the rocks. Just before entering town, stop at the North House Folk School, which offers classes (many single-day offerings) and programs on Northwoods skills and handicrafts — everything from basketry to boatbuilding. A small store sells artisan-made goods like birchwood bowls and rosemaled plates with elaborate hand-painted designs.         A good dinner choice: the Taproom at Voyageur Brewing Company, a local favorite that serves house-made ales and excellent pub fare like fish tacos and pizzas at reasonable prices ($10 to $15 entrées). For something slightly fancier, although still not expensive, dine on the deck at the Angry Trout Cafe and watch the sunset.  Where to stay: The moderately priced six-room Mayhew Inn, a downtown boutique hotel, overlooks the water and is full of Northwoods kitsch and charm. For wheelchair-accessible rooms, opt for the 40-room Aspen Lodge, another moderately priced property on the eastern edge of town.   Alamy Stock Photo Grand Portage Loop Day 3: Grand Marais to Grand Portage Loop (70 miles round trip)     Start the morning with breakfast at the Blue Water Café, a local joint with a large front window facing the harbor. Enjoying a cup of coffee here, with sailboats moored in the harbor and fog rolling in from off the lake, feels more like getting your morning Joe along the coast of Nova Scotia than in Minnesota.  Drive 35 miles north to Grand Portage and spend most of the day at the Grand Portage National Monument, the former location of a crucial overland trade route near a series of waterfalls and rapids on the Pigeon River. The lakeside location became a critical trade hub for both Native Americans and, later, Europeans. When Europeans descended on North America, it became a headquarters for the North West Company, which helped transport thousands of tons of furs to Europe. Today, the monument is home to a heritage center that provides an excellent overview of this history.  The monument is more of a living exhibit than it is any sort of static museum display (although it has that too). You’re able to tour the old North West Company Depot, which includes a Great Hall where the company’s shareholders met for their annual meeting during the late 18th and 19th centuries. There’s even a warehouse where, today, you can watch craftsmen demonstrate woodworking, carving and coopering. A collection of impressive bark canoes in the depot may make you long to explore the area’s other famous jewel, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (which is possible, but you’ll need a few more days).  Grand Portage borders Canada, so once you’ve had your fill of 19th-century fur traders and Ojibwa lore, you can return to Grand Marais.      Where to stay: Return to the Mayhew Inn for the night, then drive back to Duluth via Minnesota Highways 1 and 2 and on to Minneapolis on I-35.  Ryan Krogh is an Austin Texas-based freelance writer and editor whose work has appeared in numerous publications, including Garden & Gun, GQ and Scientific American. He was an editor at Outside for nearly a decade. He spent many summers as a teenager hiking (and paddling around) Lake Superior’s North Shore and still returns there regularly. More on Travel 8 travel pros’ trip ideas Michigan coast Road Trip Quiz: Can you navigate America’s highways and byways? ‘Psychotic’ Kids Spaced Out On Drugs Being Recruited By Lads As Young As 15 – Yorkshire Live https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/psychotic-kids-spaced-out-on-drugs-being-recruited-by-lads-as-young-as-15-yorkshire-live/ The grim reality of life for some Huddersfield teenagers has been laid bare by a former boxer who has worked with some of the town’s most vulnerable young people. Mark Reynolds has spent countless hours talking with and mentoring young people in schools, youth clubs and sporting organisations, and through his boxing club, RABC based in Milnsbridge, Huddersfield. He says that society as a whole has lost values such as respect, while the coronavirus pandemic has left some young people battling mental health problems. Mark believes that the tragic death of teenager Khayri McLean, 15, outside a Huddersfield school should be a ‘lightbulb’ moment for every parent worried about knife crime. Khayri, who was described as a ‘wonderful student’ by his school’s headteacher, was attacked in the street and died after being taken to Leeds General Infirmary. Friends described him as the ‘kindest boy’. Read more : Fearful Huddersfield residents blame ‘druggies, alcoholics and idiots’ as men left in pool of blood Mark, 54, a former boxer, has used boxing as a tool to encourage young people to stay fit and healthy and to develop self-confidence and maturity. He says boxing is useful because it has the kind of ‘street cred’ that helps him to get through to young people. He talks to children and teenagers about a range of issues, from knife crime and the risks of grooming, to drugs and exploitation. “I am very passionate and I wear my heart on my sleeve,” he told YorkshireLive. “I have been helping young people for 25 years. In those 25 years I have never known society like it is now. Values like respect have gone. Balloons, flowers, cards and messages were left at the roadside where Khayri Mclean was attacked “Years ago we would never talk to teachers like they do now. I work with schools to promote healthy living and get young people fit for life.” As well as working with young boxers, Mark has spoken with vulnerable children in pupil referral units, high schools and junior schools, as well as pupils within more affluent areas. He believes the pandemic has led to a rise in young people suffering with mental health problems. Cannabis smoking and alcohol have added to the mental health crises, he says. “Because I am an ex-boxer they listen to me. I usually have their attention. But I do want to do more. Schools don’t have the funding. We have a purpose built boxing club in a mill but that needs funding. We have put £200,000 in. I feel embarrassed asking for funding all the time.” Mark says recent events in Huddersfield have left students and parents in a state of shock. He is hoping that it will lead to more conversations about what is happening on the streets. Asked about knives, and why some people carry them, he says: “They carry knives because they need to feel protected – that is what they think. But seven out of 10 knives will be used on themselves, so there is naivety.” Rawthorpe Amateur Boxing Club’s new premises at Bridgecroft Mill, Tanyard Road, Milnsbridge. Boxing coach Gabor Voros (left) with club founder Mark Reynolds (Image: Huddersfield Examiner) Mark believes young people have been ‘desensitised’ to violence by video games and films, and that drug taking can lead to them becoming ‘psychotic’. His message about the dangers of knives is only a small part of the story. “Drugs, gangs, exploitation and County Lines – they are all related. Knife crime is only a small part of the message,” he says. And he says social media can sometimes amplify and worsen disputes between people that would once have blown over in a short period of time. He says adults have, in some cases, got involved in their children’s disputes and made things worse by issuing their own threats. Mark says that children now seem to be using ‘street language’ as a matter of course which he described as worrying. On the subject of drugs, he says: “Young people are getting roped into it younger and younger – girls and boys.” He adds: “Young people want to feel part of something, a group. These gangs are clever. They can identify vulnerable people. There are more and more vulnerable people.” Some parents and social workers turn to Mark for help, but he admits that he isn’t a ‘Pied Piper’ and cannot always provide the help that is needed. “Parents are crying out for help and social workers are getting in touch with me,” he said. “Young people are lost in the system and dads are pleading with me. Their children are knocking around with the wrong people. Young people won’t listen to mum or dad but we have got a chance with them.” Rawthorpe Amateur Boxing Club founder Mark Reynolds. (Image: Huddersfield Examiner) Mark has seen many disruptive young people who ‘kick off’ in order to be ‘cool’. “They have low self-esteem, are shy and are bullied. I work with the naughty kids but what about the good kids? I have known kids being naughty just so they can come into my sessions. I don’t have the magic answer but I try to befriend these young people. They call me ‘baldy’.” Mark often gives older teenagers a very blunt message which he hopes acts as a wake-up call. “I say ‘it could be you’. Your family ruined… I tell them to change their mindset. Be safe and think about your families. “I tell them the things that can happen to you. Prison and life in prison. Beaten up or raped in prison. Or dead. “And I tell them one thing that is worse than that. I tell them to put their hands up if someone loves them or if they love someone. Imagine that person hurt. They will threaten or hurt your family.” Mark says the violence has to stop and everyone must play their part. He says County Lines drug gangs are now targeting younger children to do their dirty work. “Older kids in schools are trying to get younger ones involved with County Lines.” And those who take drugs can end up mentally ill, he says. “They can be psychotic…A lot of young people are on weed and skunk. It is making these young people psychotic. They are seeing things, having hallucinations. It’s not just Huddersfield it is across the country.” Read next: New twist in saga of Huddersfield’s beleaguered Rugby League museum as Bradford unveils new plan Yorkshire mum of 11 feeds her entire family for less than £4 a meal Pictures of Saddleworth Moor search for Keith Bennett as police erect second tent at site Who is Russell Edwards? Report Details ‘Systemic’ Abuse Of Players In Women’s Soccer – The New York Times https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/report-details-systemic-abuse-of-players-in-womens-soccer-the-new-york-times/ A yearlong investigation found U.S. Soccer executives, N.W.S.L. owners and coaches at all levels of American soccer had turned a blind eye toward years of reports of abuse from players. The Portland Thorns and Houston Dash paused their N.W.S.L. match last October to honor sexual abuse survivors and protest the league’s handling of complaints.Credit…Soobum Im/USA Today Sports, via Reuters Oct. 3, 2022Updated 2:30 p.m. ET One coach called in a player to review game film and showed her pornography instead. Another was notorious at the highest levels of women’s soccer for alternately berating his players and then quizzing them about their sex lives. A third coach coerced multiple players into sexual relationships, behavior that one top team found so disturbing that it fired him. But when he was hired by a rival team only a few months later, the original club, which had documented his behavior in an internal investigation, said nothing. Instead, it publicly wished him well in his new post. Those details and others fill a highly anticipated investigative report into abuse in women’s soccer that found sexual misconduct, verbal abuse and emotional abuse by coaches in the game’s top tier, the National Women’s Soccer League, and issued warnings that girls face abuse in youth soccer as well. The report was published Monday, a year after players outraged by what they saw as a culture of abuse in their sport demanded changes by refusing to take the field. It found that leaders of the women’s league and the United States Soccer Federation — the governing body of the sport in America — as well as owners, executives and coaches at all levels failed to act on years of voluminous and persistent reports of abuse by coaches. All were more concerned about being sued by coaches or about the teetering finances of women’s professional soccer than player welfare, according to the report, creating a system in which abusive and predatory coaches were able to move freely from team to team at the top levels of women’s soccer. “Our investigation has revealed a league in which abuse and misconduct — verbal and emotional abuse and sexual misconduct — had become systemic, spanning multiple teams, coaches and victims,” Sally Q. Yates, the lead investigator, wrote in the report’s executive summary. “Abuse in the N.W.S.L. is rooted in a deeper culture in women’s soccer, beginning in youth leagues, that normalizes verbally abusive coaching and blurs boundaries between coaches and players.” Last year, U.S. Soccer commissioned Yates, a former deputy attorney general, and the law firm King & Spalding to look into the sport after reports in The Athletic and The Washington Post detailed accusations of sexual and verbal abuse against N.W.S.L. coaches. After the news media reports, and after games were postponed as furious players protested publicly, N.W.S.L. executives resigned and were fired. Within weeks, half of the 10-team league’s coaches had been linked to allegations of abuse, and some of the world’s top players had recounted their own stories of mistreatment. Cindy Parlow Cone, the U.S. Soccer president and a former member of the national team, called the findings “heartbreaking and deeply troubling” in a statement. Cone said U.S. Soccer was “fully committed to doing everything in its power to ensure that all players — at all levels — have a safe and respectful place to learn, grow and compete,” and said the federation would immediately implement a number of the report’s recommendations. Image A National Women’s Soccer League game between Gotham F.C. and the Washington Spirit last October.Credit…Monique Jaques for The New York Times The report made a lengthy list of recommendations that it said should be adopted by U.S. Soccer, and in some cases the N.W.S.L., including making a public list of individuals suspended or barred by U.S. Soccer, meaningfully vetting coaches when licensing them, requiring investigations into accusations of abuse, making clear policies and rules around acceptable behavior and conduct, and hiring player safety officers, among other requirements. The report also raises the question of whether some N.W.S.L. owners should be disciplined or forced to sell their teams, as it recommended the N.W.S.L. “determine whether disciplinary action is appropriate for any of these owners or team executives.” Even with so much of the worst abuse publicly known, the Yates report is stunning in how meticulously it details how many powerful soccer officials were told about abuse and how little they did to investigate or stop it. Among those whose inaction is detailed are a former U.S. Soccer president; the organization’s former chief executive and women’s national team coach; and the leadership of the Portland Thorns, one of the N.W.S.L.’s most popular and best-supported teams. “Teams, the league and the federation not only repeatedly failed to respond appropriately when confronted with player reports and evidence of abuse, they also failed to institute basic measures to prevent and address it,” Yates wrote. She added that “abusive coaches moved from team to team, laundered by press releases thanking them for their service,” while those with knowledge of their misconduct stayed silent. The report said the sport does little to train athletes and coaches about harassment, retaliation and fraternization. It noted that “overwhelming” numbers of players, coaches and U.S. Soccer staff members remarked that “women players are conditioned to accept and respond to abusive coaching behaviors as youth players.” While the report details complaints made about several coaches, it focuses its narrative on three: Paul Riley, Rory Dames and Christy Holly. The accusations against Riley, who last coached the North Carolina Courage, and Dames, who coached the Chicago Red Stars, have been well documented in news media reports. The accusations against Holly, who was abruptly dismissed as coach of Racing Louisville F.C. last year with little explanation, have not been aired publicly before. The New York Times sought interviews with Riley and Holly in the last year, but did not receive responses from them, and neither man immediately responded to requests for comment Monday. Dames did not immediately return a reporter’s call on Monday. From left, Rory Dames, Christy Holly and Paul Riley.Credit…Getty Images Holly sexually coerced a player, according to the report, by inviting her to his home for what he said was a session to watch game film. Instead, he showed the player pornography and masturbated in front of her. Another time, according to the report, after calling in the player again under the pretense of watching game film, Holly groped the player’s genitals and breasts each time the film showed she made a mistake. While coaching in the N.W.S.L. years earlier, the report also found, Holly drew complaints of verbal abuse and mistreatment and had a relationship with a player “that caused a toxic team environment.” Yet little vetting of his past occurred as he moved from job to job. The report found that Riley “leveraged his position” as a coach to coerce at least three players into sexual relationships while working previously in a different women’s soccer league, and it said that investigators received “credible reports of sexual misconduct with other players” that were not detailed in the final report. Dames, a longtime youth soccer coach, fostered a “sexualized team environment” that included speaking to youth players about their sex lives, according to the report. That environment “crossed the line to sexual relationships” in multiple cases, which the report says “may have begun after the age of consent.” Dames also screamed at and belittled players, and joked about the age of consent for sexual activity. In the cases of all three coaches, the report found, N.W.S.L. and U.S. Soccer officials, as well as individual team owners and executives, were repeatedly made aware of complaints of inappropriate behavior but largely did nothing to address them or prevent them from occurring elsewhere. Sexual misconduct allegations were brought against Riley each year from 2015 to 2021, for example, and an anonymous player survey in 2014 also identified Riley, then coaching the Portland Thorns, as verbally abusive and sexist. The survey results were seen by U.S. Soccer and N.W.S.L. officials, and feedback was distributed to the Thorns owner Merritt Paulson. Image Portland Thorns fans lit a smoke bomb last November as part of a protest of the sexual misconduct scandal in the league.Credit…Steve Dykes/Getty Images In 2015, after the Thorns conducted an investigation, Riley was terminated. But the team said publicly that it had chosen not to extend his contract, and Riley was not disciplined. When he was hired by another N.W.S.L. team months later, no one from the league or the federation — which at the time effectively ran and bankrolled the league — provided his new team with any of the complaints or information used to substantiate his termination by the Thorns. Players also complained about Dames for years, beginning in 2014, when they told Sunil Gulati, then the U.S. Soccer president, and Jill Ellis, then the women’s national team head coach, that Dames had created a hostile work environment with the N.W.S.L.’s Chicago Red Stars, according to the report. Dames was also called abusive by his players in anonymous surveys, and in 2018 he was investigated after another prominent player complained. Yet while a U.S. Soccer investigation into that case substantiated many of the complaints, the report was not distributed throughout the org...

Apple CEO Tim Cook Doesn’t Like The Metaverse—he Predicts A Different Technology Will Shape The Future – CNBC https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/apple-ceo-tim-cook-doesnt-like-the-metaverse-he-predicts-a-different-technology-will-shape-the-future-cnbc/ Tim Cook is the latest big name in tech to pour some cold water on the industry’s excitement over the concept of a metaverse. “I always think it’s important that people understand what something is,” the Apple CEO told Dutch publication Bright on Friday. “And I’m really not sure the average person can tell you what the metaverse is.” Unsurprisingly, Apple hasn’t yet publicly touted any plans for the metaverse, a term typically used to describe virtual reality (VR) platforms where people can interact, work, shop and play games using immersive technology like a virtual reality headset. These virtual worlds already exist, in some form, but many of the biggest names in tech are working to develop the hardware and software necessary for people to spend significant time — and money — in the metaverse. Mark Zuckerberg and Meta are heavily invested in the concept of the metaverse. Companies from Microsoft to Disney have laid out metaverse plans. But some experts suggest that any metaverse hype partially exists specifically because people don’t understand what it’s going to be. In June, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt summed up the general confusion over the concept, noting that “there’s not an agreement on what the metaverse is.” Similarly, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel has called the idea of the metaverse “ambiguous and hypothetical.” Instead, he’s pushed his company’s plans around augmented reality (AR), where virtual elements and images are superimposed onto the real world. Cook is also a big proponent of AR, and Apple is reportedly developing an AR/VR headset that could hit the market in 2023, according to Bloomberg. The future of AR “will go much, much further” than today’s applications, Cook told Bright on Friday. “I think AR is a profound technology that will affect everything,” Cook said. “Imagine suddenly being able to teach with AR and demonstrate things that way. Or medically, and so on. Like I said, we are really going to look back and think about how we once lived without AR.” Cook’s comments on the metaverse came amid a European tour that saw the Apple CEO visit the U.K. and Germany before speaking at the University of Naples Federico II’s commencement ceremony last week. In a Q&A session at that ceremony, Cook suggested people might eventually think of AR as they do the internet: ubiquitous and difficult to live without. “Zoom out to the future and look back, you’ll wonder how you led your life without augmented reality,” Cook said. “Just like, today, we wonder: ‘How did people like me grow up without the internet?'” Sign up now: Get smarter about your money and career with our weekly newsletter Don’t miss: ‘This is creating more loneliness’: The metaverse could be a serious problem for kids, experts say Bill Gates says the metaverse will host most of your office meetings within ‘two or three years’

Get caught up in minutes with our speedy summary of today’s must-read news and expert opinions. Sign up here! (Kitco News) – According to the latest Basel III Monitoring report, banks are in no hurry to adopt cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies.  The new report, which was commissioned by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), shows that the 19 largest financial institutions reportedly hold €9.4 billion ($9.18 billion) worth of crypto, which equates to 0.14% of “total exposure on a weighted average basis across the sample of banks reporting cryptoasset exposures.” “When considering the whole sample of banks included in the Basel III monitoring exercise (ie also those that do not report cryptoasset exposures), the amount shrinks to 0.01% of total exposures,” the report said.  This means that in total, the global bank exposure to crypto is only 0.01%, a clear sign that banks are not the driving force behind cryptocurrency adoption.  The data provided came from 16 Group 1 banks and three Group 2 banks – ten of which are located in the Americas, while seven are in Europe and the other two are located in other parts of the world. According to the report, “Group 1 banks are those that have Tier 1 capital of more than €3 billion and are internationally active. All other banks are considered Group 2 banks.” The authors of the report noted that while the figures provided are based on the most up-to-date data available to the BIS, the exponential growth rate of crypto makes it difficult to estimate the real exposure rate.  “As the cryptoasset market is fast evolving, it is difficult to ascertain whether some banks have under- or over-reported their exposures to cryptoassets, and the extent to which they have consistently applied the same approach to classifying any exposures,” the report said.  Digging into the data A deeper dive into the data provided shows that two institutions control more than half of the total cryptoasset exposures, four banks hold around 40% of that value, and the remaining 10% is split between 13 banks. Breaking it down by asset, Bitcoin (BTC) comprised 31% of the total exposure while Ether (ETH) constitutes 22% of all cryptoassets held by the banking institutions surveyed. Products or “instruments” that utilize either Bitcoin or Ether as the underlying cryptoasset comprised 25% and 10%, respectively. “Together, these make up almost 90% of reported exposures,” the report said.  Other notable holdings include Polkadot (2% of reported exposures), XRP (2%), Cardano’s ADA (1%), Solana (1%), Litecoin (0.4%) and Stellar (0.4%). Additional tokens that were also reported in smaller amounts include the stablecoin USD Coin (USDC) and several unidentified tokenized assets.  The three main categories of activities and crypto-related functions that the above allocations expose the banks to include crypto holdings and lendings (4.2%); clearing, client and market-making services (45.7%); and custody/wallet/insurance and other services (50.2%). The Custody/wallet/insurance and other category includes all custody, wallet, and insurance services for cryptoassets and facilitating client activity such as self-directed or manager-directed trading.  All trading activities on client accounts, clearing crypto derivatives and futures, ICOs, and issuing securities with underlying crypto assets fall under the “clearing, client and market-making services” category.  Holding and investing in cryptoassets, lending to entities, and issuing cryptoassets backed by assets on the bank’s balance sheet are included in the crypto holdings and lending category. U.S. Plans To Award $221 Mln To Address Mississippi Flooding Risks – Reuters https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/u-s-plans-to-award-221-mln-to-address-mississippi-flooding-risks-reuters/ WASHINGTON, Oct 3 (Reuters) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said on Monday it will spend almost $800 million to address flood mitigation, coastal storm damage protection and address supply chain resilience. About $221 million will address flooding for the Pearl River in Jackson, Mississippi, it said in a statement. The plan, funded by the $1 trillion infrastructure bill Congress passed in November 2021, supports construction of 31 additional projects and 11 previously announced projects. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The Pearl River funding for a comprehensive flood damage reduction plan is subject to a review of environmental and other criteria. In August, U.S. President Joe Biden declared a state of emergency when Jackson, Mississippi, went without reliable drinking water after pumps at the main water treatment plant failed. The city linked the failure to complications from the flooding of the Pearl River. A boil water advisory was lifted on Sept. 15. White House Infrastructure Implementation Coordinator Mitch Landrieu said in a statement to Reuters that funding will be used to ensure “communities across the country can withstand the effects of climate change and extreme weather for decades to come.” The administration plans more than $250 million in additional funding for the Soo Locks replacement project in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, which is contingent upon passage of separate water resources legislation. Michigan lawmakers have pushed for years to get federal funding for a new $1.3 billion lock to handle larger vessels and prevent a potential failure of the locks. It also includes $60.6 million for storm-ravaged Rio Guayanilla, Puerto Rico, to assist with flood damage reduction, and $46 million to address flooding risks in southwest Louisiana. About $2 million will be used to complete preconstruction engineering and design phases for the eventual replacement of two bridges across the Cape Cod canal in Massachusetts, a project costing more than $1 billion. GM Outsells Toyota In U.S. As Industry Worries About Inflation – Reuters https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/gm-outsells-toyota-in-u-s-as-industry-worries-about-inflation-reuters/ The new GM logo is seen on the facade of the General Motors headquarters in Detroit, Michigan, U.S., March 16, 2021. Picture taken March 16, 2021. REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File Photo Oct 3 (Reuters) – General Motors Co (GM.N) outsold Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) in the United States in the third quarter, data on Monday showed, but analysts and investors are fretting that a darkening economic picture will lead to a drop in car sales. Thus far, a shortage of cars due to supply disruptions, combined with a preference for personal transport, has seen consumers willing to shell out more money, largely protecting profits at automakers and auto dealers who have pulled back on discounts. But analysts now warn demand may lose steam in the coming quarters as rising interest rates discourage consumers from paying more money for cars and trucks in the coming months. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com “We’re cautiously optimistic about moving forward. There’s a lot of negative consumer sentiment in the marketplace. So we’re obviously concerned about that,” Randy Parker, chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor North America, said in an interview on Monday. GM said it sold 555,580 vehicles in the quarter through September, 24% higher than last year when inventory shortages hit sales. The Detroit automaker, whose shares rose 2.6% in morning trade, added it would boost production of its Chevrolet Bolt electric models in response to higher demand. Shipping finished-vehicles to consumers proved to be another headache for the industry in the quarter. Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) shares fell on Monday after it sold fewer-than-expected vehicles in the third quarter as deliveries lagged way behind production due to logistic hurdles. Toyota’s sales fell 7.1% to 526,017 vehicles in the same period, the automaker said, adding that it “did not face any shipping issues”. Supply issues, however, dragged down sales of Fiat Chrysler (STLA.MI) 6%. “We are paying close attention to how the industry will react to these concerns. Perhaps there will be more incentives, longer finance terms, or a combination of these,” said TrueCar analyst Zack Krelle. Auto industry consultant Cox Automotive said U.S. automakers may sell more vehicles in the third quarter over Japanese brands, which are still struggling with inventory issues. Another consultant Edmunds said a total of 3,393,988 new cars and trucks will be sold in the United States in the quarter, a 0.9% decrease from a year earlier. GM said it plans to increase calendar-year production of both Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV for global markets to more than 70,000 in 2023 from about 44,000 vehicles in 2022. One In Tech Foundation Providing More Than 100 Scholarships This Year To Advance Tech Careers And Education – Business Wire https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/one-in-tech-foundation-providing-more-than-100-scholarships-this-year-to-advance-tech-careers-and-education-business-wire/ SCHAUMBURG, Ill.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Cybersecurity and IT audit are among the fastest growing fields with the most opportunity, but there is a talent gap that continues to spread as needs increase. One In Tech, an ISACA Foundation, is addressing this by providing access and support to individuals who are currently underrepresented in the industry to pursue these career paths. The Foundation seeks to bridge the gap in diversity and build a talent pipeline through its scholarship program. The One In Tech scholarship program removes barriers to ensure equitable access to and advancement within tech careers. Through partnerships with corporations, academic institutions, and ISACA chapters, One In Tech will be awarding more than 100 scholarships this year, with 25 awarded so far. The Foundation’s scholarships provide long-term support through academic tuition assistance, career-building resources, mentoring, training, networking, apprenticeships with corporate partners, discounted ISACA certification resources, job opportunities, and more. Chosen from hundreds of applicants, the first scholarships recipients illustrate the great need for that support. “As a Black, Muslim woman, I believe that my identity is extremely underrepresented in the tech industry,” notes one of the scholarship recipients. “Finding resources and breaking into spaces has been difficult given my identity, but it’s opportunities like this scholarship that encourage me to continue pursuing my passion for a cyber career.” “One of the major barriers to a diverse cyber workforce is the lack of access to academic pathways leading into these careers,” says Ginger Spitzer, executive director of One In Tech. “Globally, individuals in marginalized communities have experienced forms of bias and challenges leading to under-representation within the workforce, and One In Tech’s scholarships help counter that by supporting students through the university experience and additional training opportunities.” One In Tech is awarding more than 90 scholarships in the second application cycle this October. Razer Basilisk V3 Pro Review: The Ultimate All-Round Gaming Mouse Dexerto
Razer Basilisk V3 Pro Review: The Ultimate All-Round Gaming Mouse Dexerto
Razer Basilisk V3 Pro Review: The Ultimate All-Round Gaming Mouse – Dexerto https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/razer-basilisk-v3-pro-review-the-ultimate-all-round-gaming-mouse-dexerto/ Razer’s latest gaming mouse refresh, the Basilisk V3 Pro is undoubtedly one of the best we’ve ever tested, and it has a host of fantastic features under the hood that make it great for almost everyone. When we look at the jam-packed release schedules of 2022, we look back at the Logitech G502X, which is a refresh of one of the most iconic gaming mice around. Razer also produces a mouse very similar in shape, and its latest iteration, the Basilisk V3 Pro, might actually beat Logitech at their own game. Weight: 112g Connectivity: USB-C, 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth Buttons: 11 Sensor: Focus Pro 30K Optical Sensor Maximum DPI: 30,000 Polling rate: Up to 4,000Hz Battery life: up to 90 hours Features: PTFE Skates, Razer Chroma RGB, Optional dock & wireless charger, h Price: $159.99 Where to buy: Razer Included in the box: Razer Basilisk V3 Pro, USB-A to USB-C cable, 2.4Ghz Dongle, dongle adapter Design The Razer Basilisk V3 Pro comes in a sleek-looking box, not too dissimilar from the Razer Deathadder V3 Pro we reviewed earlier this year. However, the Basilisk V3 Pro is entirely dissimilar from that esports-focused mouse. Instead, the Basilisk V3 Pro concerns itself with being an all-rounder, a jack of all trades. Equipped with three function buttons on the right-hand side, in addition to a total of five functions on the scroll wheel, a DPI-switcher, in addition to a scroll wheel switching function, rounding out the total usable buttons on this mouse to literally 11. This mouse might be less-suitable for fingertip grippers, but as a claw-based reviewer, we really couldn’t find many faults in the mouse’s shape, which echoes the G502 in all of the best ways, but Razer also has adorned the mouse with some tasteful RGB on the scroll wheel, in addition to on the logo, in addition to the underside of the mouse. The mouse is also flanked with rubber grips, which feel fantastic, while the plastic finish is the same as we previously saw on the Deathadder V3 Pro, which offers an eggshell-like texture, allowing for fantastic grip, no matter how sweaty your hands might get. The Basilisk V3 Pro’s most interesting feature is in its scroll wheel, it can shift from being free-spinning, to notched at the touch of a button, but Razer has peppered in a bit of magic here, too. An additional mode, accessible in Razer’s Synapse software allows you to enable Smart-Reel, which will automatically enter a free-spin, and then return to tactile cycling by measuring how fast you’re scrolling. This is a much better solution than the noisy, mechanical clicks that we experienced on the G502X Plus, and the Smart-Reel tech is just leagues ahead of Logitech’s own offering. Gaming performance The Razer Basilisk V3 Pro isn’t the lightest mouse out there, but it does manage to do just about everything well, whether you’re in game of League of Legends, or looking to enter a sniper mode and reduce your DPI at the touch of a button, handily placed on the tip of your thumb, you can play almost anything on this, meaning that although the mouse is expensive, you will be equipped to tackle almost every game. In Warzone, we never span out the sensor, and the DPI-shifting button is a godsend when sniping, as we just mentioned. It actually helped us rack up more kills than not. In Halo: Infinite, we also managed to use the mouse to bind additional functions, ensuring that we could always stay in the game, and not mess around finding the key for the melee attacks. Equally, the Basilisk V3 Pro also offers a great experience outside of gaming scenarios, too. So, you won’t be wanting more when it comes to actual day-to-day use, either. Razer’s new ecosystem We also tried out the Razer Strider Chroma gaming surface, which s adorned with diffused RGB along the sides, and offers a bit of a combo between hard-and-soft surfaces. We really enjoyed using it, though the cable placement on the mousepad itself caused hell in our cable management setup. No RGB is ever making your desk look slightly messier than it needs to, but aside from that, it was a great gaming surface, that offers a middle-ground for those wanting to try a harder surface, but might not want to fully commit quite yet. It’s the best of both worlds really. It is fairly expensive at $129.99, but it’s also very high quality, and you won’t need to replace it soon like many cheaper gaming surfaces. You can buy the Razer Strider Chroma here Razer also equipped us with the brand-new Mouse Dock Pro, which only works with the Basilisk V3 Pro at the time of writing. It’s a wireless charging dock, equipped with magnets and a charging puck that you can just whack on the underside of your mouse. It’s certainly leagues ahead of Razer’s older mouse dock, which used a pin system that had a tendency to fail over time once they got a bit of dirt in them. This elevates the Basilisk V3 Pro higher, as it also unlocks a 4,000 Hz Polling Rate for the mouse. While you’re not using it, the magnets keep the mouse firmly in place, too. It is an essential add-on, and worth the cost of entry for the features offered, if you can afford the extra $69.99. You can buy the Razer Mouse Dock Pro here Should you buy it? The Razer Basilisk V3 Pro is a mouse that just simply ticks all of the boxes for us, it’s comfortable, high-quality, and also manages to perform excellently in both gaming and office scenarios, combined with a wheel that makes the G502X look like an embarrassment. We vastly preferred the Basilisk V3 Pro over Logitech’s G502X Plus. Razer has positioned itself at the pinnacle of gaming mice, we saw it in the Deathadder V3 Pro, and we’re seeing it again in the Basilisk V3 Pro. The price is absolutely justified for this high-end gaming mouse, it’s one of the best that we’ve ever tested, and it’ll be extremely tough to topple. 10/10 If you click on a product link on this page we may earn a small affiliate commission.

7 Things To Know Before Booking A Stay At Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa The Points Guy
7 Things To Know Before Booking A Stay At Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa The Points Guy
7 Things To Know Before Booking A Stay At Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa – The Points Guy https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/7-things-to-know-before-booking-a-stay-at-breathless-cabo-san-lucas-resort-spa-the-points-guy/ With seemingly endless possibilities when it comes to hotel accommodations, restaurants and fun things to do in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, an all-inclusive resort might be the last thing on your mind. After all, you’re incentivized to spend as much time on the property as possible because you paid for, well, everything in advance. But if you’re a solo traveler looking to mingle or a couple seeking a fun getaway, the adults-only Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa may be worth considering. Here are seven things to know before booking a stay there — and why my husband and I are already planning our next trip. ASHLEY ONADELE/THE POINTS GUY Cost Room rates for a standard suite with a king-size bed and a marina view range from $450 to $1,150 per night. Alternatively, you could redeem between 21,500 and 29,500 World of Hyatt points per night. If you can spare them, aim to use your points on pricier nights. Doing this can get you a value of almost 3 cents per World of Hyatt point for each night you stay, which is well above the 1.7 cents per point TPG values World of Hyatt points at. Sign up for our daily newsletter Standard room rates include meals at every restaurant except Ocote, the only Mexican eatery on-site, where meals cost an additional $40 per person unless you’re staying in an accommodation with Xhale Club access. The room charge also covers most drinks (including those made with premium liquors like Anejo tequila when staying in an Xhale Club room or suite), plus $200 in resort credits that can be used for the spa, meals at Ocote and excursions. I was unaware of the latter when we made our reservation. For what it’s worth, I didn’t see many people in the Xhale Club lounge, and the resort wasn’t full enough to feel like the potential exclusivity the space offered would have been worth the increased expense. That said, I was disappointed to not have Anejo tequila included in the standard drinks package. Pros The service was fantastic. Employees knew our names and checked in throughout our stay when they saw us in passing. I was pleasantly surprised by this property’s food and drinks. They were delicious enough that I didn’t think I was missing out by not leaving the resort. The main pool (and party) are far enough from the guest rooms that you’ll enjoy plenty of peace and quiet when in your room. Every accommodation has a view of the marina. Cons The aforementioned resort credits cannot be used retroactively on things like prepaid spa treatments. I did not know about the credit until arriving at the resort, so I booked and paid for spa treatments in advance based on advice noted in pre-travel emails. Unfortunately, I was unable to get a refund or credit. The hotel is housed in two buildings, so while the distance between the party areas and the guest rooms was great for relaxing, it wasn’t always convenient to go back and forth. ASHLEY ONADELE/THE POINTS GUY Vibe: Party scene While there were two main areas of the resort to visit, the section with the larger pool was the place to be. There was an all-day DJ until the party moved upstairs to the rooftop in the evening hours. At the pool, there were cabanas and lounge chairs facing the water, plus chaise lounges positioned to offer picturesque ocean views. Additional seats without umbrellas or palapa-style coverings were also available for those who just wanted to sunbathe. Servers were around to take drink and food orders, but you could also grab breakfast and lunch at a poolside restaurant with a full menu. ASHLEY ONADELE/THE POINTS GUY If you are not necessarily looking for a full-blown party scene while on vacation, you could spend time at the quieter pool at the main building. This pool also had a DJ, but there were fewer guests and the view was of the marina instead of the beach. Room Every room at Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa has a marina view — and it’s beautiful. The bed faces the marina so you can watch boats come and go with your feet kicked up. ASHLEY ONADELE/THE POINTS GUY Our 484-square-foot Allure Suite came with a king-size bed flanked by nightstands, as well as a balcony with a bistro seating set and a bathroom with a large shower and double sinks. The oak wood wall decor and door that separated the front of the room and bathroom from the main bedroom and balcony were a nice touch that brought a sense of calm to an otherwise stimulating environment. I loved sitting out on the balcony first thing in the morning with a cup of coffee made with the in-room coffee maker. ASHLEY ONADELE/THE POINTS GUY In the room was a smart tablet for ordering room service and finding hotel information. It was immensely convenient to be able to order room service from the tablet instead of having to call it in. A minifridge stocked with a few local beers, water and miniature cans of Coke products was also available by the coffee maker for whenever we wanted a quick refreshment. ASHLEY ONADELE/THE POINTS GUY Dining and drinking The food and drinks at the resort exceeded my expectations. I’m never sure what to expect with hotel dining, but I think that the relatively small size of this resort and the clientele allowed for inspired menus and palate-pleasing culinary options. Our first stop was at Bites, a tapas restaurant with delicious appetizers, seafood and drinks. We arrived at the hotel before our room was ready, so after leaving our bags at the front desk, we were escorted there for lunch. It was a great way to begin our time at the resort. We had fresh guacamole and chips and shrimp ceviche. The margarita was made with freshly squeezed limes — no premade mixes here. We especially enjoyed our lunch here, as well as the internationally influenced breakfast we had at Spoon. Again, the size of the resort came into play at breakfast when there wasn’t a line for the omelet station at the buffet. The servers were also very attentive and we had coffee and fresh orange juice waiting for us when we came back from getting our food. We dined at the Italian restaurant Spumante once during our stay and I was pleasantly surprised by how fresh and delicious our meal was. Room service was also fantastic. We conveniently ordered from the tablet on our nightstand and there was hardly any wait at all. Within 30 minutes, our food was delivered and set up on a table at the foot of the bed overlooking the marina. ASHLEY ONADELE/THE POINTS GUY As this was a party resort, I can’t leave out Foam, the pool bar. While not a swim-up bar, servers were there to take orders so you never had to leave the water — or your cabana — if you didn’t want to. Activities The resort doesn’t specialize in many on-property activities unless you count the spa and the gym. The gym is located in the same building as the pool and most of the restaurants, a short walk from the main building and closer to the beach. The spa is also in this building and overlooks the pool and beach. There is a deck with lounge chairs that visitors can enjoy after their service. There was a DJ at the main pool each day that we were there and sometimes a staff member would hype the crowd up with some choreography. It was actually a lot of fun. You can use your included resort credits for off-property excursions like all-terrain-vehicle drives and a booze cruise that can pick you up at the marina. These credits could also be used toward the spa, but just remember to wait until you arrive at the hotel to reserve your spa time. I made the mistake of making a reservation before I knew I would be receiving resort credit and they couldn’t give me a refund. You can also hit up the beach, which is outfitted with lounge chairs and umbrellas, should you wish to soak up some sun. Recommendation I loved my time at Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa, so much so that my husband and I plan to go back for two nights sometime next year. With the option to book our stay with World of Hyatt points easily transferred from Chase Ultimate Rewards, there’s no reason to spend cash (unless, of course, there are no award rooms available on your preferred dates). Given that our lives are anything but a party when we travel with our two young kids — unless you consider kids clubs, shallow pools and nap times a particularly good time — we loved the lively atmosphere available here. The close proximity to our home in the Bay Area also meant that we didn’t have to travel too far to feel like we got away. If you’re looking for a great time, fantastic food and a beautiful room with a view, Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa is worth a visit. How Brands And Advertisers Can Build Kid-Friendly Experiences For The Metaverse The Drum
How Brands And Advertisers Can Build Kid-Friendly Experiences For The Metaverse The Drum
How Brands And Advertisers Can Build Kid-Friendly Experiences For The Metaverse – The Drum https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/how-brands-and-advertisers-can-build-kid-friendly-experiences-for-the-metaverse-the-drum/ Investing in experiences that are designed with all audiences in mind will help ensure we are collectively creating a welcoming metaverse for all, writes SuperAwesome CEO Dylan Collins. The metaverse will be a place where people of all ages meet, compete, create, and take part in events just like they do in the physical world. As the metaverse is built, it won’t just be the work of a single company – but the collective work of many. And, as we build out the metaverse collectively, it’s on all brands, advertisers and companies to work to ensure it is a safe experience for everyone it brings together. There are many existing and evolving laws and regulations that provide guidance for brands who are hoping to engage young audiences in the metaverse, from COPPA in the United States, to GDPR-K in the EU and the Age Appropriate Design Code in the UK. Brands that focus on compliance with these laws coupled with a curated strategy built on principles of data-minimization and age-appropriate design will be well positioned to create metaverse experiences that are kid, teen and brand-safe. Kids are becoming increasingly social when going online, with many turning to gaming as a way to hang out and chat with their friends. According to a recent study from SuperAwesome, 90% of children aged 6-16 identify as gamers. And when young audiences go online to game, they are complementing this with other social experiences: according to that same study, 65% of tweens (ages 10-12) are messaging friends and playing games at the same time, and that percentage only grows with the young teen (ages 13-16) audience. Many brands have already taken notice of this trend, adapting their strategy to include social gaming activations for young audiences across platforms like Roblox and Minecraft. When building for these platforms – especially when focusing on younger audiences – it’s important to implement safeguards from the start that make it possible for kids to play and socialize safely, while designing environments and experiences that take their preferences into account. Considerations for building kid-safe online experiences Kids and young teens seek different ways to interact with content, both actively and passively. Beyond the gameplay itself, games can serve as an engine for community building and foster positivity. Technology that minimizes toxicity in environments built for young audiences is also essential. Our research tells us that while kids seek the recognition, excitement, and social experience that gaming can bring them, they want to enjoy these experiences in a safe and respectful environment. Children also prefer platforms that are designed for them and for their peers. In a 2020 study, 88% of participating kids in the US reported that they preferred social platforms meant only for young audiences. It’s with this in mind that we at SuperAwesome offer PopJam, a social sharing space specifically designed for young audiences. To meet this audience where they are, we’ve created a moderated and welcoming environment that kids are able to enjoy without many of the downsides they encounter on adult-oriented social platforms. PopJam members are not able to share photos of themselves or post personal information, and the platform filters out negative language in order to create safe, non-toxic social spaces. With PopJam, brands are able to build kid-oriented content, including filters and stickers, quizzes and polls, and fun mini-games – all in a kid-friendly and moderated environment. Brands are already using PopJam to deliver interactive and kid-appropriate content, housed on their own branded channels while building their audience, like Penguin Random House, who was able to grow more followers than any other US publishing channel on PopJam. And while PopJam is one way for brands to deliver kid-safe social experiences, many of these best practices can be applied to any brand activation for young audiences. Responsible video content and engaging creators In addition to connecting in games and digital social spaces, children and teens are spending more and more time consuming video and streaming content. While video content is a great way to meet kids where they’re at, it is important for brands and advertisers creating video content to be mindful of what kind of video content they create and promote. Creating age-appropriate content protects both advertisers and their viewers – and it doesn’t require as much effort as you might think. Brands and advertisers can create content that appeals to all ages by avoiding the use of swearing or inappropriate slang, not promoting unhealthy habits (such as cigarettes, drugs or alcohol) and refraining from using visuals that portray realistic violence and gore. There are also tech services advertisers and brands can use to ensure your promotional video content is only being shown on brand-safe and audience-appropriate channels. For example, SuperAwesome’s Kid Social Video (KSV) helps brands ensure that when they advertise on YouTube their content is only showing up in videos that are a safe, relevant match for that brand, as well as the kids and families they’d most like to reach. Our human and AI moderation has reviewed over 182 million pieces of youth-oriented media and we apply approximately 65 criteria for vetting content in addition to YouTube’s filters to help ensure age-appropriate digital experiences for your brand. Brands looking to create kid-safe video content can also follow advertising standards based on the best practices set by self-regulatory and standards bodies like the Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU), which was created in the US to help companies comply with laws and guidelines that protect children under age 13 from deceptive or inappropriate advertising, or the relevant sections of the CAP and BCAP codes published by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) in the UK. There’s no one-size-fits all approach when it comes to young audiences, but keeping these principles and best practices in mind is a good place to start. So whether you’re building a gaming activation to inspire young builders, launching a new way for teens to connect with your brand or creating an influencer campaign for your newest product, investing in experiences that are designed with all audiences in mind will help ensure we are collectively creating a welcoming metaverse for all.

The Best Tech Travel Gadgets Of 2022 How-To Geek
The Best Tech Travel Gadgets Of 2022 How-To Geek
The Best Tech Travel Gadgets Of 2022 – How-To Geek https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-best-tech-travel-gadgets-of-2022-how-to-geek/ l i g h t p o e t/shutterstock.com What to Look For in Tech Travel Gadgets When shopping around for necessary gadgets to take on your next trip, there are a few things you’ll want to consider. First, it’s important to think about what’s necessary for your vacation or business trip—whether for work or play, you’ll likely have limited space in your luggage for clunky or heavy tech. Before making any purchases, you’ll want to ensure that it’s something you’ll need while you’re away from home. Our list contains things that may be considered necessary for some, but the ultimate decision will be up to you. Likewise, size and weight are equally important factors. If you’re planning on packing your tech in a carry-on bag, for instance, you’ll want to stick to pretty compact gadgets such as a portable charger or a tablet. If you play on checking a bag, you may be able to pack larger items such as an instant film camera. Lastly, you’ll want to consider your budget. If you’re specifically buying a gadget for an upcoming trip, you may not want to drop a ton of cash. However, if you’re a frequent flier or road tripper, perhaps it’s a good idea to invest in something that’s on the pricier side. Best eReader: Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition Amazon Pros ✓ 32 gigabytes of storage ✓ One charge can last up to 10 weeks ✓ Glare-free display Cons ✗ Have to pay for a monthly Kindle Unlimited subscription ✗ Wireless charger is sold separately If you’re a frequent reader, carrying chunky books can take up precious space in your carry-on or checked luggage. However, the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, our top pick for eReaders, eliminates this issue through its 32 gigabytes (GB) of storage and the ability to rent up to 20 titles at a time with Kindle Unlimited. The Kindle Paperwhite Signature is hard to bargain with—you can charge it via USB-C, with one full battery lasting up to 10 weeks. Additionally, its display is something to write home about. The 300 ppi screen is glare-free, while its warm lighting is adjustable. The front light also automatically adapts to the brightness of your surroundings, making it an excellent option for red-eye flights. Although you can use your Kindle without a Kindle Unlimited subscription (which costs an additional $9.99 a month), the accompanying plan provides a free trial and access to thousands of content with no due dates. The bottom line? If you’ve been tossing around the idea of buying an eReader, the $200 Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition is your best bet. Best eReader Best International Plug Adapter: EPICKA Universal Travel Adapter Pros ✓ Compact size ✓ 4 USB ports, 1 USB-C port, 1 AC socket ✓ Compatible with most devices Cons ✗ A bit pricey for an adapter ✗ Doesn’t convert voltage Planning on diving into international waters? The EPICKA Universal Travel Adapter is essential. Universal travel adapters allow electronics to power up in different countries. For example, the United States has plugs with two flat vertical prongs, while the United Kingdom has plugs with a top vertical prong and two bottom horizontal ones. A travel adapter ensures you can charge your devices regardless of where you go. This option from EPICKA functions explicitly as a multifunctional travel plug. However, it doesn’t convert voltage, so you’ll want to make sure your devices support 100 to 240 voltage—especially hair dryers and electric razors, which often don’t. It boasts four USB ports and one USB-C, all of which can be plugged in simultaneously. It covers more than 150 countries, including the U.S., the UK, Australia, and Japan. Best of all, this adapter is super compact. You can easily pop it into your carry-on bag for quick access, perfect for unexpected layovers or delays. Best International Plug Adapter EPICKA Universal Travel Adapter A great gadget to pack in your international luggage, this travel adapter is small, compatible with USB-C and USB, and can be used in more than 150 countries. Best Noise-Canceling Headphones: Sony WH-1000XM4 Pros ✓ Great ratings ✓ Up to 30 hours of battery life ✓ Can fold up ✓ Touch sensor controls Cons ✗ Some users report the touch sensor controls being too sensitive Whether you’re traveling via plane, train, or car, noise-canceling headphones are something you won’t want to go without. Our pick? The Sony WH-1000XM4, a powerful set of overhead headphones that feature a ton of awesome traits. These Bluetooth headphones have a near-perfect rating from more than 38,000 Amazon customers. Aside from that, a single charge can keep them alive for up to 30 hours, and they even fold up, making them all the easier to pack. Other highlights? There’s speak-to-chat technology, which automatically pauses your music when you talk. There’s also built-in Alexa, touch sensor control that allows you to skip, pause, and play tracks, multiple device pairing, and a durable case with a cable for wired listening. All of those incredible features come with a hefty price tag, though—at nearly $400, these Sony headphones are a significant investment. If you have the cash to spend, however, and you want a pair of noise-canceling Bluetooth headphones that will last, these are your best bet. Best Noise-Canceling Headphones Sony WH-1000XM4 The Sony WH-1000XM4’s feature ANC technology, top-notch sound quality, and incredible comfort. Best Portable Charger: Anker PowerCore Slim 1000 Pros ✓ Affordable ✓ Compact size ✓ Compatible with most Apple and Samsung devices ✓ Lifetime warranty Cons ✗ USB-C and lightning cables aren’t included ✗ Takes almost 6 hours to fully recharge the device A portable charger is a necessity for traveling. If you’ve somehow managed to live without one (or you’re looking to upgrade your current model), we recommend the Anker PowerCore Slim 1000. Priced at less than $30, its impressively slim design can provide multiple charges for iPhones, Android devices, and smaller tablets. Perfect for tucking into your carry-on, this Anker charger features PowerIQ and VoltageBoost technologies, which ensure that your device is receiving the fastest charge possible. Best Portable Charger Best Bluetooth Tracker: Tile Mate Pros ✓ Compatible with Android and Apple/iOS devices ✓ Waterproof ✓ Bluetooth range of up to 250 feet Cons ✗ Have to upgrade to the premium plan for added features ✗ Battery powered A Bluetooth tracker is a great gadget, especially when you’re away from home. These handy devices can be latched onto essentials such as your bag or wallet. And if you accidentally lose them, your tracker will help you find or keep an eye on them. Our favorite? The Tile Mate, a compact little gizmo that can be easily snapped onto travel necessities and features a Bluetooth range of up to 250 feet. At less than $50 for a pack of two, these trackers are super easy to use and affordable. You download the accompanying Tile app, which will ring your Tile when it’s in Bluetooth range (you can also ask a smart home device, like Amazon Alexa or Google Home, to find it for you). There’s also a custom QR code on each Tile, so you can be reached if someone finds it and scans the code. We also like that the Tile Mate can be used to find your phone. You can double press the button on your Tile to make your phone ring, even when it’s on silent. And, in cases when your Tile is out of Bluetooth range, you can use the app to see its most recent location on a map. You’ll have to upgrade to Tile’s premium plan for added features like Smart Alert and item reimbursement. Additionally, the Tile is battery-powered, so you’ll want to ensure it has a fresh battery before jet setting. Best Bluetooth Tracker Tile Mate A handy Bluetooth tracker with an easy-to-use accompanying app that will help you keep track of your absolute necessities. Best Instant Film Camera: Fujifilm Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic Pros ✓ Automatic brightness detection ✓ Rechargeable battery ✓ Double exposure mode Cons ✗ Expensive ✗ Film can be pricey, and you have to repurchase it Film cameras are all the rage right now, and this option from Fujifilm, the Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic, is no exception. This easy-to-use film camera instantly develops 2.1 by 3.4-inch (53.34mm x 86.36mm) photos. In terms of its specs, the Instax Mini 90 is pretty cool. It can automatically detect the brightness of your background or surroundings and will adjust the flash and shutter speed, so you get a great photo every time. Additionally, there’s a double exposure mode you can access by pressing the shutter twice. While it has great ratings and reviews from buyers, we would only recommend this purchase if it’s something that you’ve had your eye on for a while. The camera itself is pretty expensive, and the price can quickly continue to rack up with the added cost of repurchasing film. If you’re simply looking for something to take photos with, chances are, your smartphone may do the job just fine. Best Instant Film Camera Best Handheld Gaming Machine: Nintendo Switch P...

Shiba Inu game now has official “download day” According to Shiba Inu’s official announcement on Twitter, users from all over the world will be able to download Shiba Eternity collectible card game starting from Oct. 6. The so-called “Download Day” was originally supposed to take place on Oct. 1, but it was postponed until later on. Previously, lead developer Shytoshi Kusama stated that 5% of all profits from the game would be allocated to future SHIB token burns. If Shiba Eternity manages to reach revenues similar to its competitor, Hearthstone, one of the most popular digital collectible games, the 5% figure could be enough to substantially reduce the supply of the token. The SHIB price has not significantly reacted to the news on the day of the announcement, going up only 1.04%. At the moment, the meme token is trading at $0.00001111. Ethereum’s Vitalik Buterin claims Terra Luna team engaged in market manipulation Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has recently shared his thoughts on Terra Luna in a recent interview with New York Times columnist Ezra Klein. In Buterin’s opinion, the project’s team attempted to manipulate the market in order to maintain the value of the native cryptocurrency. The Canadian programmer stated that no one actually knows what the Terra team was doing with its vast Bitcoin reserves. According to Buterin, the Terra crash demonstrates that decentralization does not solve everything. The algorithm is still going to break when it is poorly executed, even if it is open and transparent. As reported by U.Today, Luna Classic and Luna 2.0 recently rallied this September despite Terra founder Do Kwon being reportedly on the run. “Big Short” hero Michael Burry tells main difference between 2000s crisis and today’s The main hero of “The Big Short” movie, Michael Burry, has taken to Twitter to share the main difference between today’s crisis and what markets went through back in 2000. Burry believes that the difference lies in the passive investing bubble “that inflated steadily over the last decade.” The idea of passive investments was pushed by various influencers and broker sales managers, with some investing platforms offering a stable income with almost no participation in actual trading. As a result, this unhealthy type of advertisement led to the appearance of bubbles on both financial and crypto markets. Burry also suggests that “all theaters are overcrowded” today, and the only way off of the sinking ship is by trampling each other. According to the analyst, the crisis in the financial market is far from over, and the performance of most financial assets confirms it. XRP trading volumes suddenly up 542%, what’s happening? According to CoinMarketCap data, the market saw XRP trading volume suddenly spike by more than 500%. However, there was no significant change in the price of the token, which prompted many traders to speculate. High trading volumes are generally caused by greater volatility as traders buy and sell large quantities to capture profits. As previously reported by U.Today, on Sept. 29, XRP surged 20% after Ripple scored a major win in the lawsuit against the SEC. Another possible reason for the rise in XRP’s trading volumes may have been investors wanting to buy XRP at its current lows. Traders have probably been scurrying to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the recent XRP volatility.

U.S. Supreme Court Opens New Term With A Fresh Face And Environmental Case Reuters
U.S. Supreme Court Opens New Term With A Fresh Face And Environmental Case – Reuters https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/u-s-supreme-court-opens-new-term-with-a-fresh-face-and-environmental-case-reuters/ WASHINGTON, Oct 3 (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court opened what promises to be an eventful new term on Monday, hearing arguments in an environmental dispute, taking up some new cases to be decided over the next nine months and welcoming a history-making justice to the bench. The court’s 6-3 conservative majority has become increasingly assertive, as evidenced by its rulings last term overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that had legalized abortion nationwide and expanding gun rights. President Joe Biden’s appointee Ketanji Brown Jackson – the first Black woman justice – joined its liberal bloc after being confirmed by the Senate in April to replace now-retired Justice Stephen Breyer. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Jackson, who heard arguments as a justice for the first time on Monday, became the sixth woman ever to serve on the court. For the first time, four women serve on the court together – Jackson, Amy Coney Barrett, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor. It is on the first Monday in October annually that the court gets back to work hearing cases. Before hearing its first arguments, it announced a series of new cases to hear during the term and turned away other appeals. The court agreed to hear a challenge to federal protections for internet and social media companies freeing them of responsibility for content posted by users in a case involving an American student fatally shot in a 2015 rampage by Islamist militants in Paris. It also agreed to hear Turkish state-owned lender Halkbank’s (HALKB.IS) bid to avoid criminal charges of money laundering, bank fraud and conspiracy for allegedly helping Iran evade economic sanctions in a case that has strained American relations with NATO ally Turkey. The justices declined to hear a challenge to a federal ban on devices called “bump stocks” that enable semi-automatic weapons to fire like a machine gun – a firearms control measure prompted by a 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting. They turned away a Ukrainian government bid to avoid paying a $173 million judgment to Russian oil and gas company Tatneft (TATN.MM) as ordered by a Paris-based arbitration panel. The court also rebuffed a Republican former congressman’s challenge to a map charting Pennsylvania’s U.S. House of Representatives districts that the state’s highest court adopted in place of one drawn up by Republican lawmakers. They justices declined to hear a challenge by Missouri and nine other states – mostly Republican-led – to Biden’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate for workers in healthcare facilities that receive federal funds. Mike Lindell, a prominent ally of former President Donald Trump, must face a $1.3 billion lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems Inc accusing him of defamation for pushing false claims that its voting machines rigged the 2020 presidential election, with the justices turning away his appeal. The court heard arguments in a case that could limit the scope of a landmark federal environmental law – the Clean Water Act of 1972 – as they consider for a second time a married Idaho couple’s bid to build on property that the U.S. government has deemed a protected wetland. Chantell and Mike Sackett, who planned to build a home on their property in Priest Lake, Idaho, are appealing a lower court’s ruling favoring the government. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2007 determined that the property was part of a wetland and that the Sacketts were required to obtain a permit under the Clean Water Act before beginning construction, which they had failed to do. There has been litigation and political debates over how much of a connection with a waterway a property must have in order to require such a permit. A 2006 Supreme Court ruling led to further uncertainty. The new case gives the conservative majority an opportunity to embrace an approach favored by business groups, with a ruling due by the end of June. On the term’s second day on Tuesday, the justices are set to hear arguments in an Alabama case that threatens to cripple the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which prohibits racial discrimination in voting. What Its Like To Sail On A Very Short & Cheap 2-Night Margaritaville At Sea Cruise Cruise Blog
What Its Like To Sail On A Very Short & Cheap 2-Night Margaritaville At Sea Cruise Cruise Blog
What It’s Like To Sail On A Very Short & Cheap 2-Night Margaritaville At Sea Cruise – Cruise Blog https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/what-its-like-to-sail-on-a-very-short-cheap-2-night-margaritaville-at-sea-cruise-cruise-blog/ Jimmy Buffet’s new cruise line, Margaritaville At Sea, sails two-night cruises on an older, refurbished ship that is very enticing for the low prices you can find. The new cruise line has chosen to convert, refurbish, and re-theme an older vessel for its purposes of bringing guests on a quick visit to The Bahamas, and has named its first ship Paradise.  The cruise line describes its itineraries as follows, “the Margaritaville at Sea Paradise is the only 3-day, 2-night cruise sailing from the Port of Palm Beach to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island. On this floating island vacation, you can relax, unwind, enjoy the endless opportunities of entertainment, soak up the sun and cruise in casual-luxe comfort.” This past week I returned from my first cruise with Margaritaville At Sea, aboard their ship Paradise. This quick and cheap sailing out of West Palm Beach Florida is new to the cruise line industry, and I am excited to review it for our readers! As with any review, this is just one person’s opinion. It is important to remember that what one person desires from their vacation will be very different from another. Margaritaville At Sea is currently the only cruise line in the industry to offer a ‘Heroes Sail Free’ promotion. This excellent deal allows military service members and their families, along with first responders, the opportunity to take a sailing with Margaritaville At Sea for very little cost. This promotion covers the cost of the cruise sailing which normally would be around $200.00 USD per person. Guests who sail under this promotion are only required to pay the port taxes and fees, along with the fuel surcharge, and gratuities. These costs after the promotion come out to be about $142.00 USD. I was able to sail under this promotion, and I am looking forward to sharing what I thought about this new cruise line! Summary Planning & Pre-Cruise Immediately after booking my sailing through the Margaritaville At Sea website, I received a confirmation email with a reservation number. I booked my cruise about three weeks before the sailing. This initial email contained minimum information about the cruise. I did not hear from the cruise line again until about 24 hours before embarkation. This second email informed me that due to the impending hurricane (this is what happens sometimes when you choose to sail in Florida during hurricane season), there was a possibility that our sailing would be extended, and that we would potentially be spending an extra day at sea in order to avoid the storm. Luckily this scenario did not end up happening. (unfortunately I can not review “hurricane at sea with Margaritaville”)! The cruise line assured guests on my sailing that they would not be charged extra should the ship need to remain at sea an extra day or two to avoid the Hurricane. Rather, guests would only be required to pay the necessary gratuities for the crew onboard. In order to prepare for this sailing I browsed the cruise line’s website. I recommend doing this for any cruise sailing! Sailing with Margaritaville At Sea is relatively simple, and although I was concerned by the lack of communication leading up to the voyage, I discovered that the little information that was included in the few emails I received proved to be sufficient for this cruise voyage. Because this was such a short trip, I packed minimally. Although I did bring along some extras and essentials if in the event of the tropical storm worsening, and being stuck at sea. Again, luckily this did not happen, and Margaritaville As Sea was able to operate this particular sailing as normal, and at the time of this sailing, was unaffected by Hurricane Ian! Check-In Margaritaville At Sea currently operates only one itinerary. A 2-night sailing departing from West Palm Beach Florida, with a stop at Grand Bahama Island. The embarkation process went incredibly smoothly. For this trip I flew into West Palm Beach the night before the cruise from north Florida. The morning of the cruise I took an Uber from the hotel I stayed at, to the port. Margaritaville At Sea departs from Port of Palm Beach (address: 1 East 11th Street Riviera Beach, FL. 33404). The Uber was easily able to pull up directly to the cruise line terminal. I arrived to the port at about 12:45pm. I had read ahead of time that check-in begins at about 10:00am, but that guests are not typically allowed to board until around 1:00pm. The entire check-in process took about 15 minutes, and operated smoothly. There were no lines at check-in and guests were permitted to board as soon as they received their stateroom keycard. For this sailing, guests were required to show either their passport or their birth certificate in order to board. Currently, Margaritaville At Sea’s COVID-19 policy consists of guests showing either a vaccination card, or taking and providing a negative COVID-19 test prior to sailing. After showing my passport and vaccination card, the crew member assisting with check-in handed me my stateroom keycard, and I was able to board. Boarding & Embarkation Guests enter the ship on Deck 5, and after walking the short gangplank, are welcomed onboard with a flower lei necklace, which is a nice touch. Guests are immediately greeted by the sight of the giant, larger than life, flip flop that has become one of Margaritaville At Sea’s iconic symbols. I noticed many guests throughout the cruise taking pictures with this statue! Immediately after boarding, I wandered some of the lower decks, and familiarized myself with the ship’s layout. The passenger staterooms were ready at about 2:00pm, and I went to check out my room that would be my home for the next two nights. My initial impression of the ship is that it reflects it’s age, but that is has a certain charm that I think guests would enjoy on a quick cruise sailing. While Margaritaville At Sea is a brand new cruise line, the line purchased this older ship that had been previously owned. While Margaritaville At Sea’s ship the Paradise does reflect its age, initially I felt the ship had a certain charm to it that highlighted its tropical, fun, and carefree style and aesthetic. At about 3:00pm on embarkation day, the Cruise Director announced over the ship’s intercom system that the crew would be conducting the mandatory muster drill. Guests were directed to ask crew members where to go for the drill. Each guest’s stateroom keycard had a letter and number printed on the top righthand corner. This letter and number told guests where to go in case of a ship emergency. My appointed muster station was located in the Stars on the Water Theater on Deck 8. The ship’s crew seemed to take the muster drill very seriously, and were intent on helping guests clearly understand what to do in case of emergency. The entire muster drill process took about 20 minutes. Stateroom Upon entering my stateroom for the first time, I noticed that the room was rather sizable. There was a lot of space for just one person, or a couple traveling together. There was plenty of storage space, and room for guests to spread out. The room came equipped with a large queen bed, a pull down bed, a desk and mirror area, a large closet, TV, bathroom, and mini fridge. The room was decorated along with the rest of the ship in a tropical style with lots of bright and cheery colors. My stateroom for this sailing was an ocean view room, which meant my room came equipped with a large porthole window. I enjoyed being able to look out this window both during the day, down at the water, and at night, up at the stars. For this particular sailing, the ocean view room was the same price as the indoor staterooms. For prospective guests, I recommend comparing the prices between an indoor stateroom and an ocean view.  As stated previously the room, like the rest of the ship, reflected its age. But I felt that Margaritaville At Sea had made an effort to bring a sense of their unique brand to the ship. The bed was comfortable, clean, and cozy. The decor was fun and vibrant. My favorite part of the decor was the vintage style wallpaper map of the Caribbean Sea which covered one whole wall of the stateroom. I thought this was a unique feature, and made for a fun detail in the room.  My least favorite aspects of the room were the bathroom and the mini fridge. Upon entering my room I noticed that the mini fridge in my stateroom was sticking out from the wall, and that the door to the fridge was open. Upon further inspection I found the fridge to be broken, not operating, covered in rust, and showing signs of potential mold. The bathroom offered plenty of counter space which was nice, and allowed guests plenty of room to unpack. However, the shower was a curtain that did not reach to the floor. I discovered that after taking one shower, the entire floor of the bathroom was effectively covered in water. The presence of the water on the bathroom floor lasted the duration of the sailing.  I really enjoyed the large port hole window in my stateroom. It was a very cool experience to be able to lay in bed at night and gaze up at the stars as we sailed! I noticed that the walls of the staterooms appear to be rather thin, for guests who have trouble sleeping due to loud noises, I would recommend packing a pair of ear plugs. Something interesting that I noticed was that this ship seemed to never rock or sway. I almost never felt the ship moving, which was nice, and I think would be helpful for guests who experience motion sickness. Entertainment The ship offers several main forms of entertainment onboard. ‘Tales from Margaritaville: Jimmy’s Ship Show’, a comedy act, a dueling piano-type show, and two Sail Away parties. I was able to experience all of the main entertainmen...
