Bootlaces On Angleseys Beaches Make Healthy Cost-Of-Living Treat North Wales Live
‘Bootlaces’ On Anglesey’s Beaches Make Healthy Cost-Of-Living Treat – North Wales Live https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/bootlaces-on-angleseys-beaches-make-healthy-cost-of-living-treat-north-wales-live/ A free, largely untapped food source lies all around us. On the coasts of North Wales there are around 600 types of sea vegetables that have been lauded for their superfood status. To harvest them, you only need to get your hands wet. Seaweed has been used for thousands of years in cuisines around the world and, of course, Wales has its own distinctive contribution in the form of laverbread – the “Welshman’s caviar”, according to actor Richard Burton. Long neglected, interest in seaweed is increasing again amid growing awareness of its health and environmental benefits. Food security is another reason why people are again looking to Britain’s coastlines. It was why mum-of-two Sarah Roberts began combing Anglesey’s beaches for tasty treats two years ago. READ MORE:Devastated North Wales mum pays tribute to ‘caring’ daughter ‘crushed by wardrobe’ at Liverpool hotel “My interest started during lockdown,” said Sarah, who with partner Andy has a house in Llanfaechlu. “After having my second baby I began thinking about food supply as many did, and wondered what we could use from the beach. “I started looking online and I’m still learning about it. But I know it’s packed full of goodness and when you start looking it’s everywhere. “It’s nice to be able to ask Andy to pop to the beach with the bucket and get some gutweed! Rinse it to get the sand off, pat dry with kitchen roll, deep fry in vegetable oil for about 10-15 seconds and lift out. Sprinkle on sugar and away you go!” Sarah Roberts forages for seaweed on Anglesey with partner Andrew Foley Jones and their two young sons. Often they combine it with litter picking (Image: Sarah Roberts) For Sarah, the attraction was seaweed’s sustainability and the healthy benefits it offered her three boys – youngsters Ianto, five, and Iolo, two, and her partner of 18 years Andrew Foley Jones, a director at Mackenzie Jones solicitors. Collecting it offers plenty of fresh air and exercise too – the family usually litter pick at the same time. The key, said Sarah, a former travel firm sales director, is to harvest seaweed sympathetically. “I’ve wanted to try the sea kale but you should really only harvest it if it’s in plentiful supply,” she said. “On Borth Wen beach there are only a few plants, so I’ve left those alone.” Not all her dishes have been a success: Sarah says the sea kelp crisps she made were “horrid”. But others have become staples, such as magnesium-rich seaweed spaghetti. “I use it with either prawns or mussels in garlic and fresh tomatoes, mixed with olive oil. Sometimes white fish too,” she said. Tempted by seaweed? Or just too much hassle? Share your thoughts in the comments below? Often she buys sea spaghetti, also known as thongweed. But on a recent trip to Traeth Borth Wen, near Rhoscolyn, she came across what appear to be some washed up on the beach. Sharing a photo on Facebook, the consensus it was in fact Chorda filum, otherwise known as bootlace weed, dead man’s rope, sea lace, cat’s gut and mermaid’s fishing line. Reaching up to eight metres, it is rich in age-halting and cancer-busting antioxidants. Although edible, dead mean’s bootlace is not widely eaten but this is slowly changing. Fried with ginger, garlic, miso paste and red pepper, then added to boiling water, it is said to be delicious. Sarah didn’t cook her beach-found bootlace. The golden rule with beach foraging is to harvest from source: once detached, it starts to decompose. Instead, she said, it made an excellent prop for “chasing the kids around the beach”. Sarah’s dishes have included squid served on fried gutweed and, less successfully, sea kelp crisps (Image: Sarah Roberts) Of all the seaweed species around Britain, more than 95% are safe to eat – the rest may give you stomach ache. Inevitably, some will taste better than others. It can be eaten fresh, dried, cooked or in powder form. Seaweed can be dried in greenhouses or even on washing lines. According to Natural Resources Wales, anyone can collect floating seaweed if it is unattached. If it is growing on the foreshore or seabed, or is drift seaweed, technically you should get the landowner’s permission. As long as it’s for personal consumption, and is harvested away from polluted areas like ports, there should be few problems. In an era of vitamin-depleted supermarket vegetables, one of the great benefits of foraged seaweed is its nutritional quality. Some have different mineral contents but all contain calcium, iron, zinc and iodine. For vegans, it’s a good source of proteins too. Iodine supports thyroid health and studies have shown seaweed may lower blood pressure. And as seaweed is rich in dietary fibre, it is said to promote good gut health too. For anyone contemplating seaweed foraging, further research is advised, if only to discover the best species and to learn how to identify them. Doing so will connect you with a Welsh tradition of seaweed harvesting that was first noted by Roman writers. Once, a thriving cottage industry operated on the Welsh coast. Some seaweeds were harvested for food, other for fertilising farmland. Stone ramps still found on some coastal stretches bear testament to this tradition – they were built for carts and pack horses to haul away seaweed. One historic record suggests as many as 2,000 cartloads of seaweed were cast up near New Quay, Ceredigion, by a storm, all of which were carried away by farmers in a fortnight. Another, in the Anglesey archives, tells of two men drowning in 1843 when their boat capsized: they were using it to collect seaweed for potato manure. Love North Wales as much as we do? Browns Star Garrett Out Vs. Falcons | News, Sports, Jobs – Warren Tribune Chronicle https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/browns-star-garrett-out-vs-falcons-news-sports-jobs-warren-tribune-chronicle/ CLEVELAND — Myles Garrett will not play in Sunday’s game against Atlanta, giving the Browns star defensive end more time to recover from multiple injuries suffered when he crashed his Porsche earlier in the week. The All-Pro hurt his shoulder, biceps, had several cuts and bruises, and broke a blood vessel in his left eye when he lost control while speeding near his home. Garrett veered into a ditch, hit a fire hydrant and flipped his car several times on Monday after practice. The Browns listed him as questionable Friday before downgrading the 26-year-old to out on Saturday before flying to Georgia to take on the Falcons. Garrett, who cleared concussion protocol, did not make the trip. Speaking more softly than usual on Friday with signs of his accident apparent in an abrasion on his forehead and bright redness in his injured eye, Garrett said he felt fortunate to walk away from the wreck. A female passenger also suffered minor injuries. “I’m glad that everything worked out in a positive light,” Garrett said. “We’re both healthy, both walking around. Just blessed with another day.” Garrett has been cited numerous times by police for speeding in the past few years. He said the accident was a “wake-up” call and pledged to be more careful driving. “I don’t think it takes something as drastic as this to tell me that I need to slow down,” Garrett said. “It’s about listening to my loved ones, hearing them out, and understanding that it is serious every time you get into the car.” Garrett was cited by the Ohio Highway Patrol for losing control of his car. Garrett told an officer he thought he was going 65 mph in a 45 mph zone. In a post-crash report, the highway patrol said Garrett was driving at an “unsafe speed for the road being traveled.” The highway patrol ruled out alcohol, drugs or distracted driving as causes for the accident. One the NFL’s elite pass rushers, Garrett is one sack away from passing Clay Matthews for the team’s career mark. The Browns defense, plagued by communication breakdowns in Weeks 1 and 2, has been dealing with numerous injuries lately. Cleveland could also be without their other starting end, Jadeveon Clowney. Incels In The Metaverse – The American Conservative https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/incels-in-the-metaverse-the-american-conservative/ Culture Incels in the Metaverse Don’t Worry, Darling seems confused about which world is a natural order and which a dangerous lie imposed by force. Olivia Wilde, Nick Kroll, and Chris Pine in ‘Don’t Worry, Darling’. (Warner Bros. via IMDb) Warning: The following contains major spoilers for the film Don’t Worry, Darling (2022). Jordan B. Peterson is in touch with his emotions. The emeritus professor of psychology first rose to internet stardom in a simpler time, when online clips of crazy left-wingers still just showed them throwing hissy fits on campus (not looting convenience stores en masse or burning cities to the ground). In the latest viral video, though, it’s Peterson himself who’s been reduced to tears. Right near the end of a 45-minute interview this week, British journalist Piers Morgan asked Peterson about recent comments by actress-turned-director Olivia Wilde. Wilde’s latest film, Don’t Worry, Darling, features a charismatic villain portrayed by Chris Pine. In a recent Q&A about the movie, Wilde explained that she had “based that character on this insane man, Jordan Peterson, who is this pseudo-intellectual hero to the incel community.” She described that community, further, as “disenfranchised, mostly white men, who believe they are entitled to sex from women…[who] believe that society has now robbed them—that the idea of feminism is working against nature, and that we must be put back into the correct place.” Wilde continued: “But this guy Jordan Peterson is someone that legitimizes certain aspects of their movement because he’s a former professor, he’s an author, he wears a suit, so they feel like this is a real philosophy that should be taken seriously.” “Is that you?” Morgan asked. “Are you the intellectual hero to these people?” Peterson answered flatly: “Sure, why not? People have been after me for a long time because I’ve been speaking to disaffected young men. What a terrible thing to do that is.” He took a long pause while fighting back tears, and then: I thought the marginalized were supposed to have a voice…. It’s very difficult to understand how demoralized people are, and certainly many young men are in that category. And you get these casual insults—“these incels”—what does that mean? These men, they don’t know how to make themselves attractive to women, who are very picky—and good for them; women, be picky. That’s your gift, man. Demand high standards from your men. Fair enough. But all these men who are alienated…they’re lonesome, and they don’t know what to do. And everyone piles abuse on them. I am not sure that “incels” as such really exist, but there is no doubt something very rotten in the way men and women interact today. Partly this is relational, a problem with the dynamics themselves; but it is also founded in the respective crises of men and women in the postmodern world, in misconceptions of identity and nature. Peterson belongs to a peculiar class of intellectuals—present on the right for as long as it has existed—who recognize the root of social ills in the failure to find meaning, but fail to grasp (or even ask) what a recovery of such meaning would look like in substance and practice. Peterson in particular has always been focused on the structures and processes of meaning, dating back to his early academic works. And so the object of his later thought has been something like a reified order. But it is also a minimal order: not the reconfiguration of human society into conformity with divine law; just the moral imperative to clean your room. Peterson, like Morgan, is a reactionary liberal: he hopes to restore some of the virtues of the premodern and early modern worlds without moving beyond or against the social and political arrangements of late modernity. If he wants to turn back the clock at all, it’s not by very much. When asked what he found admirable in England, he pointed to the common law, the tradition of free speech, and self-effacing humor. Maybe he doesn’t have all the answers. (He doesn’t.) But what real harm has Jordan Peterson done? If there is a genuine problem here, it’s hard to locate the fault with the professor. So it’s worth turning to Olivia Wilde—and to her very strange new film. Don’t Worry, Darling has drawn unfavorable comparisons to Get Out, the 2017 Jordan Peele flick that set off the current craze over social-commentary horror. Don’t Worry, Darling at least has this going in its favor: it achieves some modest success in its efforts at atmospheric horror, whereas Get Out wound up laugh-out-loud funny every time it reached for a scare. Wilde’s film is especially clever in its use of sound to that effect. But Get Out and its follow-ons have been bad not just because they fail to scare, and not just because they fail as stories, but because they are all remarkably heavy-handed, remarkably clunky works of far-left propaganda. On this front, Wilde outpaces the competition by a mile. Don’t Worry, Darling broadcasts like the product of a very troubled mind. It follows happy, carefree housewife Alice (portrayed by Florence Pugh) as she begins to ask unwelcome questions about her cartoonishly idyllic setup. Alice lives with her husband, Jack (Harry Styles), in a midcentury company town called Victory, California. Victory is run by Frank—Chris Pine’s Peterson-esque villain—the brilliant but mysterious head of an unidentified enterprise. Every day, the men drive off in beautiful cars to work at Victory Headquarters. The women ride a trolley into town to shop, expensing everything to their husbands’ accounts. They return home to cook, clean, and take care of other business. Those who have kids welcome them home off the school bus every afternoon. A series of events set off by Alice’s former friend Margaret, who lost her son in the desert beyond Victory and now seems to have lost her mind, causes Alice’s life to unravel. She draws first the attention and then the anger of the enigmatic Frank—who has Peterson’s charm, his habit of talking with his hands, a version of his soft Canadian English, and all the cunning brutality Wilde must imagine the professor to possess. He even speaks often, in a kind of lowbrow Peterson ripoff, of the need for men to choose order over chaos. Alice becomes his girlboss nemesis, intent on exposing the lie behind the seeming utopia of Victory. Pugh had an impressive understated-horror turn in Ari Aster’s masterful Midsommar (2019), so she ought to have had the chops for this kind of role. As Alice, though, she fell flat—equal parts unconvincing and unlikable. That wasn’t her fault. In the film’s third act, the reason for all the weirdness and inconsistency becomes clear: Wilde was building to a ridiculous final plot twist. Victory is a simulation. In the real world, Alice was a successful surgeon. She even had a smartphone. Jack was her deadbeat husband, poorly dressed with a patchy beard, who spent his days at home listening to podcasts. One day, when Alice refused to have sex with Jack after a 30-hour shift, he knocked her out and placed her in the simulation against her will. Frank, we learn, operates this whole virtual reality; the other men are all like Jack, and the women (with at least one exception) are all prisoners like Alice. It is a less-than-subtle commentary on the domestic oppression women supposedly endured up through the middle of the twentieth century. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Wilde’s delusion is just how hackneyed it all is. Men are evil. Housewives are oppressed. The goods of family life are all illusory. This is no groundbreaking radicalism; it is what feminism always has been, and always will be. Subscribe Today Get weekly emails in your inbox But it’s also worth noting just how bleak is the vision of liberation Wilde offers: if only you could see beyond the veil of domesticity, you too could break into the world of 30-hour shifts and soul-crushing exhaustion. You, too, could find yourself tied to a sloppy bum—a man deprived of masculinity because he is deprived of a masculine society—who has all of the vices and none of the virtues of the men in the simulation. You, too, could live in a dark urban apartment instead of a beautiful suburban house. You, too, could hate your husband (who deserves it). You, too, could find yourself bizarrely mismatched, in one way or another, to every aspect of your life—disaffected, demoralized, and alienated, to use Peterson’s words. The great irony here is that Wilde seems confused about which world is the natural state of men and women and which is a dangerous lie imposed by force. In the end of Don’t Worry, Darling, Alice finds her way out of the illusion. We hear her, in the movie’s final moment, wake up and take one first, gasping breath in the real world. God willing, her creator may just one day do the same.

Decentralized Social (DESO) Outpaces Crypto Market And Surges 102% This Week Amid Integration With MetaMask – The Daily Hodl https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/decentralized-social-deso-outpaces-crypto-market-and-surges-102-this-week-amid-integration-with-metamask-the-daily-hodl/ A social media-focused altcoin is surging this week after the announcement of a new partnership with the popular crypto wallet MetaMask. Decentralized social media platform Decentralized Social (DESO) rallied to a weekly high of $11 today, marking a 102% increase from its seven-day low of $5.43 The 226th-ranked crypto asset by market cap has retraced since the weekly high, but it remains up nearly 40% in the past 24 hours, trading at $10.32 at time of writing. Despite the slight pullback, DESO continues to outperform all other crypto assets within the top 300 by market cap ranking. The Coinbase-backed layer-1 blockchain project aims to redefine the nature of social media applications by resolving scalability limitations as well as protecting users and content creators from centralized authorities. Decentralized Social’s new integration with MetaMask “paves the way for DeSo to become the cross-chain social layer for all Web 3.0,” according to a press release from the project. Explains DeSo founder Nader Al-Naji, “Existing blockchains cannot store content efficiently. It costs about $50 to store a 200-character Tweet on Ethereum and about fifteen cents to store it on Solana, Avalanche or Polygon. In contrast, DeSo is one ten-thousandth of a cent, making it the first blockchain capable of disrupting storage-heavy applications like social.” Decentralized Social has thus far operated in the Ethereum (ETH) ecosystem, but the project also plans to expand to Solana (SOL). Despite the gains this week, DESO remains down almost 95% from its all-time high of $198.68, which it hit in June of 2021. Chinese Billionaire Richard Liu Settles US Rape Allegation – The Associated Press https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/chinese-billionaire-richard-liu-settles-us-rape-allegation-the-associated-press/ MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Chinese billionaire and JD.com founder Richard Liu agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by a former University of Minnesota student who alleged he raped her in her Minneapolis apartment after a night of dinner and drinks with wealthy Chinese executives in 2018, attorneys for both sides announced Saturday. Richard Liu, who stepped down as the CEO of Beijing-based e-commerce company JD.com this year amid increased government scrutiny of China’s technology industry, has denied raping the woman, Jingyao Liu. In a joint statement released Saturday night, attorneys for both sides said: “The incident between Ms. Jingyao Liu and Mr. Richard Liu in Minnesota in 2018 resulted in a misunderstanding that has consumed substantial public attention and brought profound suffering to the parties and their families. Today, the parties agreed to set aside their differences, and settle their legal dispute in order to avoid further pain and suffering caused by the lawsuit.” A settlement amount was not disclosed. The settlement was announced just two days before a trial was set to begin in a Minneapolis courtroom. Richard Liu was arrested on suspicion of felony rape in August 2018, but prosecutors said the case had “profound evidentiary problems” and declined to file criminal charges. Jingyao Liu sued Richard Liu in 2019, saying he and the other businessmen coerced her to drink alcohol at a group dinner, and that he forced himself on her in his vehicle and later raped her in her apartment.

Blood Supply ‘dangerously Low’ In Western Washington And Oregon – The Columbian https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/blood-supply-dangerously-low-in-western-washington-and-oregon-the-columbian/ Supplier says it needs 1,000 donations daily Published: October 1, 2022, 7:01pm A sign outside Bloodworks Northwest near Vancouver Mall encourages people to donate blood in October 2017. (Amanda Cowan/The Columbian files) Blood donations are down close to 50 percent at Bloodworks Northwest, the supplier of all of the donated blood in Clark County and 95 percent of the donated blood in Western Washington and Oregon. Lauren Reagan, community engagement liaison for the Vancouver branch of Bloodworks Northwest, said the organization is seeking 1,000 donations a day at its 12 locations across Washington and Oregon. Currently, only 30 percent of the donors needed in October have booked appointments, creating a need for over 14,000 more donations before Oct. 31, according to a press release. One key strategy that staff at Bloodworks Northwest hope will bolster donations is campus visits. This year, mobile donation vans will make the rounds to high schools and colleges throughout Western Washington and Oregon for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Reagan said Bloodworks Northwest hopes to bring on 10,000 new donors this school year. Prior to the pandemic shutting down schools and mobile blood donations, 16- to 25-year-olds made up about 20 percent of blood donors through Bloodworks Northwest, according to Reagan. How to help For more information on how and where to donate visit BloodworksNW.org or call 800-398-7888. “So, we are holding a lot of hope that these high school students can make a huge impact,” she said. The goal at Bloodworks Northwest is to remain in the “green zone,” with enough donated blood to have a three-day supply in back stock. That requires 1,000 donations a day. Despite a need for more donors, Bloodworks Northwest shipped an emergency supply of 30 units of blood to SunCoast Blood Centers in Florida last week, in preparation for the potential need in response to Hurricane Ian. “While our Type O supplies are tight, this is a need we must respond to,” Curt Bailey, Bloodworks president and CEO, said in a press release. “Florida is facing an extremely dangerous situation, and it’s critical we help them, just as they would help us in our own time of need.” Type O negative blood is the most-needed blood type in a trauma situation because it is the universal blood type for emergency transfusions, according to Reagan. In May, Bloodworks Northwest joined 30 blood centers across the country in forming the Blood Emergency Readiness Corps, to help ensure there is a large blood supply following a multiple-injury, mass-transfusion event such as a school shooting, according to a press release. For Bloodworks Northwest, this means committing to store an extra 15 units of type O negative and type O positive blood on a rotating schedule so it can be available to all Blood Emergency Readiness Corps members in case of an emergency. As the regional pool of blood donors remains low, not having an excess supply in case of an emergency can be worrisome. “Our community is running dangerously low on the platelets and Type O blood needed to supply local hospitals, straining our ability to provide transfusions for every cancer and surgery patient who need them,” Bailey said in a press release. “If a mass trauma event were to happen today, we would not have enough blood available to help everyone who needs it. It is vital people donate blood to support everyday needs of patients as well as unforeseen emergencies.” Eligible people can donate blood every 56 days and are encouraged to continue to donate as often as they are able to, according to Reagan. While preparing to donate blood, she recommends hydrating in the 24 hours leading up to the donation, eating a high-sodium meal the night before and eating a full meal two hours before the actual blood draw. The donation process usually takes around an hour, though only about seven to 10 minutes of that is the actual blood draw, according to Reagan. For more information on how and where to donate, visit BloodworksNW.org or call 800-398-7888.

They ended up stranded at an airport after employees forgot to load it onto the plane. Xavi Santiago said they were stranded at a Florida airport after American Airlines staff forgot to load their wheelchair. Santiago said they waited in the baggage claim area for about five hours, convinced their chair was lost. A passenger who flew on American Airlines said they were stranded at the Airport after the airline employees forgot to load their wheelchair. “The entire time, I had no idea if my chair was going to show up. If it was going to be damaged, what was going to happen,” Xavi Santiago, 23, told Insider.”This is not a lost bag. This is my mobility. These are like my legs.” Santiago, who posted about their travel experience in a vial TikTok video said they along with their partner and friends were stranded at the Orlando Airport for almost five hours. The group, which was on vacation, was unable to leave because they were told that Santiago’s power wheelchair was not loaded onto their one-way flight from Los Angeles, California, to Orlando, Florida. A week before departure, the flight had changed to include a layover in Miami, Florida, Santiago said. “When I booked my flight, I booked a one-way potentially because I am very aware of airlines and how they treat disabled people,” Santiago said. “I know disabled people who have had their mobility aids broken, damaged, or lost by airlines.” In their layover in Miami, Santiago said they were unable to pre-board, which is a common accommodation for disabled passengers. “That’s always how it goes, I pre-board, I get transferred while the plane is still empty or while other disabled people or other people who are pre-boarding are still getting on,” Santiago said. “That didn’t happen. There was no wheelchair attendant or accessible attendant to get me into the transfer seat.” When Santiago finally made it on the plane, they said they had to squeeze past other passengers to get to the back of the plane to their seats. Santiago said that after an hour-long flight, they arrived in Orlando at 6 pm to find their wheelchair missing and were escorted to the waiting area where their partner was told the chair was not boarded on the connecting flight. “I was really freaking out because getting on the plane was such a mess. I was really worried that my chair still wasn’t here,” Santiago said. “No one was explaining anything to me.” Santiago told Insider they were angry by the airline staff only communicating with their partner. “I constantly have feelings of really not being seen as a person,” Santiago said. “I know it’s a common feeling for a lot of disabled people is they think that because you have physical disabilities, that it means that you’re any less capable or any less competent. And I sure as hell am not either of those things.” While a staff member offered Santiago a temporary wheelchair, they said the airline employee could not find one that could be taken outside of the airport. They would have to wait at the baggage claim area until their wheelchair arrived on the next flight at 9:30, Santiago said. “I went down in one of the temporary wheelchairs and was trying to sort out getting just a temporary chair that I could use to get to the hotel and they couldn’t find anything,” Santiago said. “They couldn’t find even a manual wheelchair that was my size, that they could get to me.” Santiago, who said they paid more than $22,000 for their electric chair, said they feared they would never see it again and be stuck on vacation without mobility. “I was convinced that it was not going to make it on the flight and that if I got it back, it was going to be damaged. Just with how many people told me that they hadn’t seen my chair,” Santiago said. Passengers with disabilities repeatedly call out about harrowing experiences with air travel According to a report from the Department of Transportation published in July, US airlines saw a 108% increase in complaints from flyers with disabilities, from 76 in May 2019 to 158 in the same month this year. A passenger who also flew with American Airlines in July accused the airline crew of destroying his wheelchair and then severely damaging its replacement, costing him $65,000. Writer and poet Allegra Keys, said her power wheelchair was severely damaged and left inoperable after she flew on Alaska Airlines in September. US lawmaker Jim Langevin of Rhode Island was barred from his flight twice this year after airline staff thought his power wheelchair violated safety regulations. As US airlines damage thousands of wheelchairs every year, disability advocates and wheelchair users who fly often have urged a shift in the narrative regarding wheelchairs, Insider’s Bethany Dawson previously reported. Rather than saying wheelchairs are being broken, they should be viewed as a part of the body that is being destroyed. Senator Tammy Duckworth, who also travels using a wheelchair, proposed a new policy last year that requires airlines to report wheelchair breaks and other among other incidents to the Civil Aviation Authority. “Wheelchairs should be treated like a human limb because they’re my legs,” says Sen. Duckworth previously told Insider. “When you break my wheelchair, or you lose my wheelchair, you’ve taken away my legs.” ‘Taking up space as a disabled person is the way’ After nearly five hours of discomfort waiting in the luggage area, Santiago said their chair finally arrived at the airport about an hour after midnight. “I couldn’t leave the airport. It was really difficult for me to get moved and go to the bathroom, hard for me to transfer in and out because the chair isn’t my own. It’s not made to meet my needs,” Santiago said. “I was just uncomfortable and stuck there for several, and it was awful.” American Airlines did not respond to requests for comment. Santiago said American Airlines offered them $300 of in-flight credit in compensation but they refuse to fly American Airlines again. “While there is a part of me that wants to use the bare minimum of what they’ll give me, I barely want to fly again,” Santiago said. “I really don’t think I’ll ever fly with American Airlines, and I sure as hell am never going to the Miami airport again.” Santiago said that all the positive feedback they received from their TikTok video calling out American Airlines made her feel seen and heard. “The only way that people will listen to us sometimes is if we are abrasive, if we are angry, if we are pushing and that’s okay,” Santiago said. “It’s something that I have to remind myself of constantly, but taking up space as a disabled person is the way.” They added: “There is nothing wrong with taking up just as much space as able-bodied people and asking and not even asking, demanding for the support and access that we need in order to do the same things as able-bodied people, to travel, to live, to exist and to enjoy our lives. We are deserving of those things.” Microsoft and partners may be compensated if you purchase something through recommended links in this article.

Ruptured Oil Pipeline Off California Approved For Repairs – 69News WFMZ-TV https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/ruptured-oil-pipeline-off-california-approved-for-repairs-69news-wfmz-tv/ LOS ANGELES (AP) — A Texas oil company was granted permission to repair an underwater pipeline that ruptured off the coast of Southern California a year ago, spilled tens of thousands of gallons of crude, and forced beaches and fisheries to close. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers granted the approval Friday to Amplify Energy Corp., clearing the way to rebuild the aging pipeline that burst months after it was apparently weakened when it was snagged by the anchors of ships adrift in a storm. The Oct. 1, 2021, rupture spilled about 25,000 gallons (94,600 liters) of oil into the Pacific Ocean, closed miles of beaches for a week, shuttered fisheries for months and coated birds and wetlands in oil. The approval to rebuild the pipe running from an oil rig off Huntington Beach to tanks in Long Beach comes less than a month after Amplify pleaded guilty to federal charges of negligently discharging oil. The Houston-based company and two subsidiaries also agreed to plead no contest in state court to polluting water and killing birds. Amplify said the approval will allow it to remove and replace the damaged segments of pipe from the ocean floor. It estimated the work would take up to a month after a barge is in place. If it passes a series of safety tests after being fixed, the company said it expected to begin operating in the first quarter of 2023. Environmentalists who want the pipeline shut down criticized the permit approval and renewed calls to put an end to offshore oil operations. “The Biden administration just ramped up the risk of yet another ugly oil spill on California’s beautiful coast,” said Brady Bradshaw of the Center for Biological Diversity. “Unfortunately, people living near offshore drilling infrastructure are all too familiar with this abusive cycle of drill, spill, repeat.” On Wednesday, the environmental group sued the federal government for allowing the platform where the pipeline originated to operate under outdated plans that indicated the platform should have been decommissioned more than a decade ago. The lawsuit also said the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management failed to review and require plan revisions, despite the spill. Amplify contended that the spill wouldn’t have occurred if two ships hadn’t dragged their anchors across the pipeline and damaged it during a January 2021 storm. It said it wasn’t notified about the anchor snagging until after the spill. While the size of the spill was not as bad as initially feared, U.S. prosecutors said the company should have been able to turn off the damaged line much sooner had it recognized the gravity of a series of leak-detection alarms over a 13-hour period. The first alarm sounded late on the afternoon of Oct. 1, 2021, but workers misinterpreted the cause, according to the federal plea agreement. When the alarm sounded throughout the night, workers shut down the pipeline to investigate and then restarted it after deciding they were false alarms. That spewed more oil. It wasn’t until after daybreak that a boat identified the spill and the line was shut down. As part of a federal court agreement to pay a $7 million fine and nearly $6 million in expenses incurred by agencies including the U.S. Coast Guard, the company and subsidiaries agreed to install a new leak-detection system and train employees to identify and respond to potential leaks. The company agreed to plead guilty to six state misdemeanor charges and pay $4.9 million in penalties and fines as part of a settlement. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. 5 Reasons To Visit Naladhu Private Island Resort Pursuitist
5 Reasons To Visit Naladhu Private Island Resort Pursuitist
5 Reasons To Visit Naladhu Private Island Resort – Pursuitist https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/5-reasons-to-visit-naladhu-private-island-resort-pursuitist/ Naladhu Private Island Resort is one of the most exclusive Maldivian resorts there is. With only 20 private residences, this is the kind of place you come to relax and see no one. Or get out and explore and see everyone, if you prefer. Naladhu shares its home with Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort and Anantara Veli Maldives Resort (currently undergoing a renovation of its own). This means that Naladhu guests have walking or private boat transfer access to all of their facilities. The same is not true in reverse since Naladhu is a private island reserved for just those staying here. It’s the kind of retreat that many dream of with the option for direct beach access plus a private pool overlooking the sea. The houses range in size from 3,200 sq ft to the 6,500+ sq ft two-bedroom residence. Here are five of the top reasons to visit Naladhu Private Island Resort in the coming year. The houses Following a total renovation during a six-month closure, the houses (named for a Maldivian flower or plant) look better than ever. They traded their more colonial look for a more modern twist on beach decor. The update with lighter colors is the work of New York-based designer Yuji Yamazaki. A main focus of the redesign was creating more spaces for guests to sit and relax. This includes by the window, by the pool, in the pool-facing tub or even on a day bed. Swinging day beds on the terrace are especially popular. The sky blue water in the distance is the highlight with the shimmering reflection of the private pool illuminating the rooms here. Expect beautifully dressed beds with pillows as long as your body and duvets as soft as a cloud. Air conditioning is swift (and necessary in this warm weather). There’s a ceiling fan if you want an extra boost. If you have an ocean-facing house, the sound of the waves crashing is quite unusual. While these do not have direct beach access, many appreciate them for the view of the waves. Beach villas have direct access to the sand. On the terrace are cushioned day beds, a relaxing swing and a cabana ideal for dining or working in the breeze. The pools here are much larger than a standard plunge pool. The bathroom has separate rooms for the shower and toilet. It also has his and hers vanities, a chaise longue, makeup table and outdoor shower. Each house has an external door that leads to a small patio with a second door that goes into the living quarters. It’s like your own private residence in the midst of tropical vegetation. Inside, an enormous foyer features a desk, bar area with minibar, wine fridge and coffee station. The walk-in closet adds ample space to unpack. It has extras like flip-flops to wear around the island and a souvenir beach bag to take home. The most exotic is the two-bedroom pool residence, which books up quickly with families and couples traveling together. It consists of two magnificent structures connected by an outdoor pool and living space. The residence has its own 60-foot private beach behind closed doors. It also has a small kitchen, large dining area and duplex bedroom space. The cuisine Naladhu has its own dining room, The Living Room, which has a no-menu concept. Well, in reality, it does have a menu. But, it just a guide for some of the dishes the staff can prepare. In reality, the menu is unlimited. Guests can ask for whatever they want, whenever they want (breakfast is available 24 hours a day). Of course, certain things may require advance notice to have them available. There is no limit to what is possible (for those willing to foot the bill). Many want suggestions, and that’s exactly what the lengthy menu and talented culinary team are able to do. One of the most romantic and exotic meals you can have here is the floating breakfast. A team of staff arrives with a bevy of delicious breakfast plates (from the menu you designed) at the time of your choosing. They set it up in the pool on a floating tray. You submerge yourself in the water to indulge in breakfast in the warm sun with a glass of Champagne. It’s a magical experience that you won’t find just anywhere. Guests can dine underneath the main dining pavilion facing the pool and beach or beneath private canopies in the sand. Almost every evening, guests can be seen enjoying private beachfront barbecues. These are a signature of the resort with bespoke menus enjoyed around tiki torches tropical flowers. Three resorts in one Elsewhere in the resort complex are other dining options like Sea.Fire.Salt, an al fresco grill restaurant serving the freshest seafood, meat and pasta among other things. Aqua has fresh salads, pizza and sandwiches poolside. Both of these are at Anantara Dhigu, a quick water shuttle ride across the bay. Fushi Cafe there serves a decadent breakfast buffet facing the water offering Maldivian specialties. It also has sushi, Indian cuisine, smoothies and juices made to order, and other international dishes. Baan Huraa is the Thai restaurant on stilts over the water serving fragrant and delicious food. It’s a guest favorite. Anantara Veli has a new small plate dining concept at Dhoni Bar poolside. Cumin serves breakfast and dinner with a menu that reflects the spices and flavors of the Indian Ocean. Origami is the Japanese restaurant serving freshly prepared sushi, izakaya menus and also teppanyaki-prepared dishes. There is so much variety that it’s hard to go hungry here. Naladhu has its own beautiful beachfront pool and private stretch of sand, but of course guests can explore the other two resorts in the trio, too. On Naladhu island itself, guests can use the private fitness center overlooking the pool. Just beyond is the stretch of sand where guests can dip their toes into the azure water. Water sport options include fishing, dolphin or sunset cruises, snorkeling, scuba diving and fitness classes. A treatment room is available at Naladhu for those that want spa services. Therapists can also bring massage tables to the private house There’s nothing better than listening to the sound of lapping waves while enjoying a massage on the terrace. This is also where the welcome massage for all guests take place, a 15-minute, neck-and-shoulder rub that alleviates the stress of long-haul flying. Guests can also use the impressive spa at Anantara Dhigu, which counts overwater villas among its treatment rooms. Cooking classes and Anantara’s signature Dining by Design concept, where guests can choose where they want to eat (ask for a meal on a private island away from the main resort) and what they want, are also popular with guests. It’s the ultimate in romantic experiences. The staff Like the neighboring Anantara properties, there is something special about the staff here. And at Naladhu, it’s always a step above with name recognition and recollection of personal preferences (your favorite drink, the way you like your coffee, etc.) a hallmark. Each house is attended to by a Kuwaanu, which means storyteller in the Maldivian Dhivehi language. The Kuwaanu is available at any hour via text or phone call and can organize anything from restaurant or spa reservations to onsite activities and personal needs anywhere around the island. An onsite marine biologist helps to lead a variety of island efforts to reduce waste (eliminating single-use plastic entirely) and coordinate conservation programs. She can lead snorkeling tours of the area reefs, home to nearly 2,000 species of tropical fish and sea mammals. Her commendable efforts are helping the resort island lead the way in the overall destination’s efforts to be more sustainable to protect it for future generations. The resort is also working with a third party to work toward reducing plastic waste and marine plastic pollution. She also leads educational talks for guests. There are educational walks around the island to learn about the natural life it has, too. Guests can also book private sessions with her to learn more about coral preservation. If wellness is top of mind, guests can chat with the resort’s naturopath and nutritional wellness expert on hand. She can design a plan for their vacation (and when back home) on how to improve healthy living habits. This can include everything from sleep issues and digestive problems to weight management and blood sugar balance. The location One of the best features of this trio of properties is the ease of access to Male International Airport, the main gateway to the Maldives. Many resorts require taking an expensive sea plane flight, but Naladhu is in the South Malé Atoll, just a 30-minute speedboat ride from the international airport. Within an hour or so of landing, you could be on the arrival jetty of Naladhu where the staff are throwing rose petals before your feet as you walk to your vacation home. While you don’t see or hear the international airport (it is still quite a distance from the resort), the hassle of not knowing when your departure is until 24 hours before you leave (sea plane flight schedules are announced just one day before departure) can be avoided here. And after a long flight from overseas, the last thing that jet-lagged travelers want is to be taken via bus to a separate sea plane terminal and have to wait for yet another (hot) flight to the next resort. The location here is paramount to a swift entry to vacation mode. If you weren’t in love with the resort already, management decided to donate the old furniture following the renovation to the country’s only mental health hospital. This is the kind of place that makes you feel good before you get there, while in paradise and long after you’ve left.

Tigers choose to punt since they have three timeouts remaining, but the Bulldogs will have a chance to put it away. Pinned Pinned Pinned Bulldogs take first lead It took a while, but Georgia finally has its first lead of the game as the Bulldogs cap a 7-play drive with a 1-yard touchdown run from Daijun Edwards. A 12-yard screen pass to Brock Bowers set up the score. We’re not done yet, though. Missouri will have 4:03 on the clock and all three timeouts. Pinned Pinned Pinned Missouri receivers These guys are making some really nice plays at the skill positions for Missouri. Unfortunately for the Tigers, a 15-yard hands to the face penalty just wiped out a big first down grab from Barrett Bannister. As a result, the Tigers faced a third-and-22 and went nowhere. So Georgia will get it back trailing by just three points. Pinned Pinned Pinned Toudchdown Georgia Georgia’s offense is rolling, with Darnell Washington making a seriously insane catch in double-coverage down the left sideline as he got crushed. Big-boy play. But the problem is that anytime it goes into the red-zone, it just collapses. Kendall Milton was just stuffed on a third-down carry, forcing UGA to go for it on fourth down. The Bulldogs converted though and Milton punched it in from a yard out. Pinned Pinned Harrison Mevis Harrison Mevis just drilled a 56-yarder. Man is on an absolute heater right now after playing the role of GOAT last week at Auburn. The pass interference penalty gifted Mizzou new life on that drive. What a wild game. It’s gotta be touchdown time if you’re Georgia. Pinned Bulldogs on the ropes  Start 4Q: Missouri 19, Georgia 12 The Tigers have he football in Georgia territory to start the fourth quarter after getting bailed out on a third-and-17 by a pass interference call on Georgia. Big defensive sequence coming to start the fourth quarter. Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Missouri stands again There have now been eight field goals as Missouri’s defense makes yet another stand following a fast start for the UGA offense on that possession. Jack Podlesny hits from 29, and Georgia is within 19-12. Just amazing how solid this Mizzou defense has been in the red zone. Pinned Pinned Bulldogs driving With a 15-yard run from Kendall Milton that came with an extra 15 yards due to penalty and a 30-yard completion from Stetson Bennett to Darnell Washington, the Bulldogs are quickly in business. Georgia can’t keep settling for field goals but Missouri’s defense just hasn’t broken yet. Big sequence coming here late in the third quarter. Pinned Pinned Splash play Brady Cook hit Mookie Cooper for a gain of 46 to put Missouri quickly back into Georgia territory, but the Tigers quickly stalled out from there. Yet, once again, Harrison Mevis comes through. This time, it’s a 52-yarder. Mevis is 4 of 4 with three makes of 40+ yards. Tigers back ahead by two possessions. Pinned Pinned Pinned Methodical FG drive Georgia converted a third-and-7 with a huge 14-yard connection between Stetson Bennett and Ladd McConkey to keep its first drive of the second half alive. Then, on third-and-goal, Bennet was sacked by Darius Robinson, leading to a 28-yard field goal. This Missouri defense has been excellent tonight. Huge win to limit UGA to 3 after a 16-play drive that ate half the third quarter clock. Pinned Pinned Good and bad Good news and bad news for Georgia as the third quarter gets underway. Good news: The Bulldogs force Mizzou into a three-and-out. Bad news: The SEC Network broadcast says Georgia star DL Jalen Carter is out for the game with a knee injury. Tough loss for UGA. American Continental Bank mainly serves Chinese-American communities in the City of Industry and surrounding communities in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. It has branches in City of Industry, Alhambra, Chino Hills and Arcadia in California, as well as in Bellevue, Washington. The bank also has loan production offices Fremont, California, and Carrollton, Texas. “We are excited to be entering the Los Angeles, Washington, and Texas markets and intend to open new branches in the United States,” President David Jia said in a statement. Taichung Commercial Bank’s move comes amid heightened military tension between mainland China and Taiwan this year. Taiwan is home to many of the world’s largest technology companies, and Washington has encouraged Taiwan’s chip industry to invest in the U.S.; among them, GlobalWafers, a maker of semiconductor wafers, this year announced plans to build a $5 billion facility in Texas, and MediaTek, which competes with Qualcomm, will open a design center at Purdue University. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, one of the world’s largest chip makers, is already building a facility in Arizona. The U.S. currently has more than 70 Asian American or Pacific Islander American owned banks, according to Investopedia. East West Bank leads the way; Taiwan-based CTCB Bank is among the group. Far East National, then backed by Taiwan’s Bank SinoPac, was acquired by L.A.-based Cathay General in 2017. Taiwan has the world’s 22nd largest economy. Taiwan businesses that rank on the Forbes Global 2000 list of the world’s top publicly traded companies include Hon Hai Precision — the big supplier to Apple led by billionaire Terry Gou, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, or TSMC, which makes computer chips for Intel. Others among Taiwan’s numerous Apple suppliers include Pegatron, Lite-On Technology, Inventec, Catcher Technology, Largan Precision and Compeq Manufacturing. Latest From LDS General Conference: Nelson Denounces ‘grievous Sin’ Of Abuse; Christofferson Warns Against Prejudice – Salt Lake Tribune https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/latest-from-lds-general-conference-nelson-denounces-grievous-sin-of-abuse-christofferson-warns-against-prejudice-salt-lake-tribune/ Led by its oldest-ever prophet in a time of increased media focus, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints staged its 192nd Semiannual General Conference this weekend. President Russell M. Nelson, who turned 98 last month, and other top leaders of the 16.8 million-member global faith delivered sermons in sessions Saturday — with more to come Sunday — emanating from 21,000-seat Conference Center in downtown Salt Lake City and streamed across the world. During the twice-yearly conferences, Latter-day Saint authorities discuss spiritual subjects and timely topics. They frequently use these occasions to unveil policy changes and announce new temples. This fall’s gathering comes at a moment when the Utah-based faith has found itself at the center of a string of films and documentaries — not all of them flattering — and increased scrutiny about its handling of reports regarding child sex abuse. Below are the latest speeches and announcements from Saturday’s three sessions: Saturday evening Michelle Craig: Press on in faith (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) Michelle D. Craig, first counselor in the Young Women general presidency, speaks at General Conference on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022. Michelle D. Craig, first counselor in the Young Women general presidency, cited the fortitude of the pioneer women who trekked to Utah despite immense trials in encouraging conferencegoers to press on during hard times. She said Latter-day Saint prophet Joseph F. Smith, the faith’s sixth president, spoke of the inner strength of these pioneer women: “‘Could you turn one of these women away from their convictions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?’” she quoted Smith as asking. “’Could you darken their minds as to the mission of the Prophet Joseph Smith? Could you blind them with reference to the divine mission of Jesus Christ, the Son of God? No, never in the world could you do it. Why? Because they knew it. God revealed it to them, and they understood it, and no power on earth could turn them from what they knew to be that truth.’” In growing to meet the challenges of our times, Craig said, it is important to keep gospel covenants, even when it is not easy, and to act in faith, particularly in difficult moments. She further advised Latter-day Saints to be wholehearted and joyful in their devotion to the gospel. “When hard times come, I try to remember that I chose to follow Christ before I came to earth and that challenges to my faith, my health and my endurance are all part of the reason I’mb here,” Craig said. “And I certainly should never think that today’s trial calls into question God’s love for me or let it turn my faith in him into doubt. Trials do not mean that the plan is failing; they are part of the plan meant to help me seek God.” Presiding Bishop Gérald Caussé: ‘The care of the earth … is a sacred responsibility’ (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) Presiding Bishop Gérald Caussé speaks at General Conference on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022. The work of creation is “an integral part of God’s plan for his children,” said Presiding Bishop Gérald Caussé, the ecclesiastical leader over the church’s vast financial, real estate, investment and charitable operations. “Its purpose is to provide the setting in which men and women may be tested, exercise their agency, find joy, and learn and progress, so that they may one day return to the presence of their Creator and inherit eternal life.” The divine gift, though, “does not come without duties and responsibilities,” Caussé said. “These duties are best described by the concept of stewardship…a sacred spiritual or temporal responsibility to take care of something that belongs to God, for which we are accountable.” The Creator has “entrusted the earth’s resources and all forms of life to our care,” the French Latter-day Saint said, “but he retains full ownership.” “…Our Heavenly Father allows us to use earthly resources according to our own free will. Yet, our agency should not be interpreted as license to use or consume the riches of this world without wisdom or restraint,” Caussé said. “The Lord gave this admonition: ‘And it pleaseth God that he hath given all these things unto man; for unto this end were they made to be used, with judgment, not to excess, neither by extortion.’” The church leader said members can do much “collectively and individually to be good stewards.” “Considering our individual circumstances, each of us can use the bountiful resources of the earth more reverently and prudently. We can support community efforts to care for the earth. We can adopt personal lifestyles and behaviors that respect God’s creations, and make our own living spaces tidier, more beautiful, and more inspirational.” Stewardship over God’s creations also includes “a sacred duty to love, respect and care for all human beings with whom we share the earth,” he said. “They are sons and daughters of God, our sisters and our brothers, and their eternal happiness is the very purpose of the work of creation.” That role of stewardship “is not solely about conserving or preserving them,” Caussé said. “The Lord expects us to work diligently, as moved upon by His Holy Spirit, to grow, enhance, and improve upon the resources he has entrusted to us — not for our benefit only but to bless others.” He promised those who “stay faithful in this sacred stewardship and honor your eternal covenants, you will grow in the knowledge of God and of his son, Jesus Christ, and you will feel their love and their influence more abundantly in your life.” Saturday afternoon Apostle D. Todd Christofferson: Create an environment of belonging (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) Apostle D. Todd Christofferson speaks at General Conference on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022. As the church’s worldwide membership continues to grow in diversity, so too must Latter-day Saints’ efforts in ensuring all feel welcome within the fold, apostle D. Todd Christofferson urged listeners. “We cannot permit any racism, tribal prejudice, or other divisions to exist in the latter-day church of Christ,” he said. “We should be diligent in rooting prejudice and discrimination out of the church, out of our homes, and, most of all, out of our hearts.” As an example, he quoted the story of a woman whose struggle with infertility left her feeling isolated in her congregation. She noted that the church has “widowed, divorced and single members; those with family members who have fallen away from the gospel; people with chronic illnesses or financial struggles; members who experience same-sex attraction; members working to overcome addictions or doubts, recent converts; new move-ins; empty nesters; and the list goes on and on.” “. . . The Savior invites us to come unto him — no matter our circumstances,” the woman stated. “We come to church to renew our covenants, to increase our faith, to find peace, and to do as he did perfectly in his life — minister to others who feel like they don’t belong.” Among the lessons Christofferson drew from the story was the fact that the woman used her experience to identify others in her congregation who might be struggling. “Belonging comes not as we wait for it,” he said, “but as we reach out to help one another.” Ultimately, however, he stressed that members do not join the church for “fellowship alone.” “We join for redemption through the love and grace of Jesus Christ,” he said. “The church is the custodian of the covenants of salvation and exaltation that God offers us through the ordinances of the holy priesthood. It is by keeping these covenants that we obtain the highest and deepest sense of belonging.” Seventy Jorge F. Zeballos: Follow the divine design to resist sin (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) General authority Seventy Jorge F. Zeballos speaks at General Conference on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022. Drawing upon his own training as a civil engineer in designing seismic-resistant buildings that could withstand earthquakes, general authority Seventy Jorge F. Zeballos emphasized the importance of heeding the “divinely designed ‘plans’ and ‘technical specifications’” that teach Latter-day Saints how to resist sin and lead happy lives. The Chilean native said following those specifications and learning to resist sin involve fasting and feasting on the word of God in the scriptures. Just as following correct plans and technical specifications can result in structures that can withstand an earthquake, he added, following God’s plans can help people weather the storms of life. “The buffetings of the adversary can also cause ‘cracks’ or some partial damage in our lives in spite of our efforts to build our lives according to the perfect divine design …,” he said. “But what is truly relevant is that for having followed the divinely designed plans and specifications, that is, the gospel of Jesus Christ, we are still standing.” Seventy James W. McConkie III: ‘Spending time with Jesus in the scriptures changed everything’ (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) General authority Seventy James W. McConkie III speaks at General Conference on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022. As a mission president in the Czech Republic in 2013, general authority Seventy James W. McConkie III studied the words of Jesus as found in the New Testament and in the Book of Mormon. “Spending time with Jesus in the scriptures changed everything,” McConkie said. “We gained a deeper appreciation for who he was and what was important to him. Together we considered how he taught, what he taught, the ways he showed love, what he did to bless and ser...

Alabama Vs. Arkansas Score Takeaways: No. 2 Tide Overcome Loss Of Bryce Young To Storm Back For Big Win CBS Sports
Alabama Vs. Arkansas Score, Takeaways: No. 2 Tide Overcome Loss Of Bryce Young To Storm Back For Big Win – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/alabama-vs-arkansas-score-takeaways-no-2-tide-overcome-loss-of-bryce-young-to-storm-back-for-big-win-cbs-sports/ No. 2 Alabama survived a Bryce Young injury and an admirable comeback attempt to improve to 5-0 with a 49-26 win over No. 20 Arkansas (3-2) at Razorback Stadium. It was a contest that didn’t look as if it would be competitive early as the Crimson Tide offense seemed to be on cruise control; however, it ended up being a game of runs as the Razorbacks scored 23 straight points before the Tide stormed back to take control in the fourth quarter. Young, Alabama’s star quarterback and reigning Heisman Trophy winner, hooked up with Kobe Prentice for a couple big connections as Bama jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Young left with a shoulder injury in the second quarter after he fell awkwardly while being tackled by the ankles as he attempted to throw the ball away. Tide backup Jalen Milroe stepped in and immediately led two touchdown drives to push the visitors ahead 28-0. However, Arkansas got on the board just before halftime to kick-start a furious comeback attempt in the third quarter. The Hogs scored early in the third to make it 28-14 before recovering a surprise onside kick. Alabama held Arkansas to a field goal, but on the Tide’s ensuing possession, a botched snap on a punt gave the Hogs the ball back inside the 5-yard line. Arkansas quickly scored, narrowing its deficit to 28-23. And then suddenly, the fun stopped. Milroe broke loose for a 77-yard run to set up a touchdown, and on the next drive, running back Jahmyr Gibbs took off for a 72-yard touchdown run to make it 42-23, quickly putting the game out of reach. Gibbs added a 76-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter just for good measure as he rumbled for 206 yards on the afternoon. Even with the injury, Young finished with 173 yards passing and a touchdown along with an 8-yard rushing score. Milroe completed 4 of 9 passes for 65 yards with Alabama only throwing for 3 total yards in the second half. Still, the Tide outgained the Hogs 241-228 in the latter half to score 42+ points over their SEC West rivals for the seventh straight year. Arkansas was led by RB Rocket Sanders, who finished with 101 yards rushing and a touchdown on 22 carries. Here are the key takeaways from Alabama vs. Arkansas. 1. All anybody will care about is Young’s status. When the second half started, Alabama listed Young as questionable to return, and he was standing on the sideline, in full uniform, with his helmet on. However, when Alabama’s offense took the field, it was Milroe breaking the huddle with the team. The initial theory: As long as Alabama was in control of the game — it led by 21 points at the time — Young would remain on the sideline. If Arkansas made a game of it, Young would return. That went out the window when Arkansas cut its deficit to 28-23 yet Milroe remained in the game. That should be a cause of concern for Alabama fans. If Young wasn’t healthy enough to return in the second half, there’s considerable reason to believe he may not be healthy next week. That’s when Bama hosts a Texas A&M team that beat the Tide last season. While the Aggies offense has been dreadful — look at the box score against Mississippi State — their defense has remained solid. The week after, Alabama has a road game at Tennessee; not having Young available would be a massive blow considering how potent the UT offense has looked. 2. Milroe offers something Young does not. It’s not that Young can’t run because he can. He’s not a burner, but he’s fast enough. Still, due to his size, it isn’t recommended that he runs around and take hits when he can easily beat teams with his arm. Milroe, however, is listed at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds. He can take hits … if you can catch him. After watching him take off for a 77-yard run, I don’t know how many players can do that. Milroe’s rushing ability opened things up for the Alabama rushing attack in the fourth quarter as he and Gibbs combined for three rushes over 70 yards. Adding a ball carrier as the 11th man makes a defense’s life more difficult. The question will be what Milroe can give Alabama in the passing game going forward. If defenses don’t have to respect his arm, they’ll eventually adjust and slow down his rushing. Milroe was only called on to thow four times in the second half; Alabama netted 3 yards passing over the latter 30 minutes. 3. Sam Pittman made one crucial mistake. It may not have mattered in the end, but Pittman nevertheless made a puzzling decision that was tough to understand. After cutting Alabama’s lead to 28-14, Pittman opted to go for an onside kick. It was a smart, aggressive move as he tried to seize on his team’s confidence and catch a shaken Bama team off guard. But then, after driving downfield to set up a first-and-goal, the drive stalled. With Arkansas facing fourth-and-goal from the 4-yard line, Pittman opted to kick the field goal to make it 28-17. Yes, Arkansas had taken control of the game and he didn’t want to risk coming up with nothing if his team failed to score on the fourth down, but taking three points in that spot is not advisable. Arkansas was down two scores, and the field goal still left it down two scores. What’s the point of stealing an extra possession if you don’t use it to give your team a greater chance of victory? It’s difficult enough to beat Alabama. Nobody knows that better than Arkansas, losers of 15 straight in the series. You certainly aren’t going to beat Bama by settling for field goals in the red zone. Ultimately, it didn’t matter as the dam broke in the fourth quarter and Alabama won comfortably, but it was nevertheless the wrong decision. 5. Sanders is a damn good player. That’s all. I want to point it out because players on the losing team often get forgotten, but Sanders was the best player on the Razorbacks this Saturday. The play that stood out was a third-and-14 in the third quarter. Sanders was the checkdown; he caught the pass, threw Henry To’oTo’o aside, picked up the first down and kept the drive alive. It ultimately led to the touchdown that made it a 28-14 game before the onside kick. If Arkansas had been able to complete the comeback, it would’ve been one of the game’s biggest plays. He looked to be favoring his right shoulder following the play, and a replay shows that he landed on that shoulder when sacked by Drew Sanders on the previous drive. He immediately went to the injury tent on the sideline and was there for a while before he was seen running to the Alabama locker room. He came back out for the second half and has been seen with his helmet on, but Alabama is listing him as questionable to return. It may depend on whether or not Arkansas makes a game of it. Telefónica Metaverse Day: Telco Embraces The Web3 Revolution TelcoTitans
Telefónica Metaverse Day: Telco Embraces The Web3 Revolution TelcoTitans
Telefónica Metaverse Day: Telco Embraces The Web3 Revolution – TelcoTitans https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/telefonica-metaverse-day-telco-embraces-the-web3-revolution-telcotitans/ Telefónica announced an array of partnerships and innovations as it continues to assert itself as a leader on metaverse and extended reality. Chema Alonso, Telefónica’s Chief Digital Officer, kicked off the operator’s Metaverse Day on Thursday, placing the emergence of the metaverse within the context of another, coming internet revolution. This revolution is manifesting itself through Web3, an iteration of the web with artificial intelligence services, decentralised token economies and built-in cybersecurity. Alonso framed Web3 within a “tsunami of technologies” which he believes will enable the metaverse. Telefónica characterised such technologies as a gateway to a cognitive interface, or AI with a human parity. Unprecedented challenges on the horizon Irene Bernal, the telco’s Connectivity Innovation Director, also took to the stage to discuss Web3 as a platform. There is no single definition for the metaverse, but Telefónica described it as a “real‑time, virtual, alternative 3D world”. The event was centred around a shift from interactive to immersive experiences, and device computing to spatial computing — not only for gaming, but also for commerce, communications, and education. Bernal was clear that the challenges in exacting this transformation will be “unprecedented”. To demonstrate the monumental challenge to providing XR experiences in real time, she noted that, based on today’s speeds, the Microsoft Flight Simulator would take 300 years to download its 2.5PB of data. Over the next ten years, Telefónica projects data traffic will increase by 20 times, requiring 1,000 times the current computing power at the world’s disposal. Telefónica was upfront about such growth requiring a large‑scale transformation of the telco industry, but sees this as possible through Web3. For instance, edge computing will be key for the metaverse in order to reduce the distance between users and data processing, which will combine with 5G and Wi‑Fi 6 networks to reduce latency. Alonso re‑entered the fray to explain how Telefónica aims to achieve real‑time digitisation in collaboration with Facebook parent Meta through the likes of network slicing and adapting software‑defined networking (SDN) to specific use‑cases. A flurry of strategic partnerships In order to help bring about the metaverse, Telefónica introduced its Metaverse Partnership Framework, setting out three key areas: XR devices; XR engines; and XR experiences. On XR devices, the telco is continuing to develop solutions alongside Meta, confirming the addition of the latter’s MetaQuest2 headset to its catalogue. Additionally, Hugo Swart, Vice‑President and General Manager of XR at Qualcomm, made an appearance to provide further details on its partnership with Telefónica. Swart sought to position Qualcomm as the “ticket to the metaverse”, explaining how its Snapdragon Spaces platform will enable developers to create experiences with AR SDK as a plug‑in for 3D engines. The discussion of XR engines resulted in the announcement of two new partners by Daniel Hernandez, Telefónica’s VP Devices & Consumer IoT. The first was a strategic partnership with cross‑platform game engine developer Unity Technologies on application planning interfaces, gaming experiences, and network‑as-a‑service innovation. Unity is one of the most widely used engines and has acted as the basis for VR experiences since their inception. The second strategic partnership announced was with US software developer Niantic, the creator of Pokémon Go. The pair will collaborate on network, visual connection systems, and delivering exclusive user experiences to Telefónica’s customers. Finally, on the experiences front, there was one more significant declaration. Telefónica announced the acquisition of Zaragoza-based metaverse firm Imascono. The acquisition reflects Telefónica’s desire to support domestic development of XR technologies in Spain, as well as support the gamification of educational experiences. The duo has a history of collaboration reaching as far back as 2015, including cooperation on the security joint venture Movistar Prosegur Alarmas as well as applications focused on bringing metaverse functionality to homes across Spain in real time. Hernandez confessed that he was formerly a sceptic of AR and the metaverse, but with confidence declared “forget this idea that it’s not going to happen!”, and asserted that one‑in‑four consumers will seek immersive experiences by 2026. Prior to the metaverse’s fully fledged launch for consumers, Telefónica has been shaping its own virtual space through Horizon Worlds, a social platform developed in tandem with Meta. The VR ecosystem enables users to interact with their avatars, and the technology is already in use internally for events and meetings. The telco will also join forces with Microsoft on its AltSpaceVR platform to enable customers and workers to interact and witness talks in a virtual edition of its Innovation Hub. Tokenomics: Not in an era of change, but a change of era Alonso went on to use the event to discuss the centrality of Web3 economies and “tokenomics” to commercial aspects of the metaverse. ‘Tokenomics’ is concerned with the use of blockchain services such as non‑fungible tokens. Alonso explained that tokens can be used to access a service and, with the growth of the service, the value of the relevant token will organically rise. NFTs have already sparked the interest of some investors globally, with The New York Times reporting that venture capital invested in cryptocurrency providers had risen in the previous year. Telefónica sees blockchain and crypto growing further with the roll out of metaverse commerce, with the telco’s Executive President José María Álvarez‑Pallete stating that “we are not in an era of change. We are in a change of era”. The telco is to work with tokenomics firm Bit2Me to allow consumers to pay for devices and services through a wallet system using digital assets. Of course, the elephant in the room for XR and the metaverse is the challenge associated with creating a world with seemingly infinite capabilities. Telefónica told attendees that it was aware that with no regulation for new decentralised economies, protection of health standards, or regulation of user behaviour, the metaverse could be a negative force. On top of this, the network and technological growth required will have to be achieved in line with pledges from Telefónica to achieve net‑zero emissions by 2040. Despite a host of challenges, the telco envisions XR 5G will come to market in about five years’ time, and 6G capabilities integrated during the 2030s.

Space Cadets Has Everything A Person Needs To Get Organized With Something For Every Budget – 280 Living https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/space-cadets-has-everything-a-person-needs-to-get-organized-with-something-for-every-budget-280-living/ There’s nothing worse than trying to live and work in a cluttered environment. This is especially true for the many Americans who are spending more time at home than they used to. “Even though we’re venturing out more now, we’re still spending more time at home than before the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Kim McBrayer, owner of Space Cadets. The pandemic impacted our habits, plus many people are still working from home, Kim said. Space Cadets has everything a person needs to get organized, and there’s something for every budget. There are $5 solutions and $50,000 solutions to clutter — and everything in between. There are built-in cabinets for those who want a touch of elegance, and there are fixed ventilated shelves for those who want to get organized on a budget. At the retail and design center, customers can shop a variety of organization products for closets, kitchens, garages and more. “You don’t have to buy services from multiple companies,” Kim said. “We’re a one-stop shop with everything you need to get organized.” The best sellers at Space Cadets in 2022 are custom closets. This is a great way to reorganize your home and make sure you have a perfect place for everything you own. There are a variety of closet choices for every budget, and each one is a high-quality design. The closets can be customized to your home and your needs. The process at Space Cadets starts with a consultation, called a Space Walk. At this meeting, clients discuss their trouble areas, specific needs, budget and expectations. Next is the design phase. If a product system is required, one of the Space Cadet designers prepares a plan and estimate for your review. The production phase is the moment the client has been waiting for. Here, the Space Cadets organize with great care and attention to detail and leave the space better than they found it. Space Cadets also helps with relocations. “This is either for someone moving into a new home and wanting to get started with a clean slate, or for someone preparing to move and wanting to purge the unnecessary to lighten the load for the movers,” Kim said. Kim urges customers to call Space Cadets in the early stages of their home remodels or construction to get in the pipeline for ordering and preparation. “Don’t wait until the last minute,” she said. This need for early booking is due in part to continuing supply chain issues, but it’s also due to the Space Cadets schedule. “We need to get involved at an earlier date than we used to because we’re booking so far out,” Kim said. In addition, custom closets “are so popular and are in great demand, like never before,” Kim said. Anyone interested can stop by the retail shop in Brook Highland to find all sorts of cool storage items and gadgets, as well as take a walk through the showroom and design center for great ideas on how to improve their space.

California Fraud Cases Highlight The Need For A Regulatory Crackdown On Crypto Cointelegraph
California Fraud Cases Highlight The Need For A Regulatory Crackdown On Crypto – Cointelegraph https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/california-fraud-cases-highlight-the-need-for-a-regulatory-crackdown-on-crypto-cointelegraph/ The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) announced last month that it had issued desist and refrain orders to 11 entities for violating California securities laws. Some of the highlights included allegations that they offered unqualified securities as well as material misrepresentations and omissions to investors. These violations should remind us that while crypto is a unique and exciting industry for the public at large, it is still an area that is rife with the potential for bad players and fraud. To date, government crypto regulation has been minimal at best, with a distinct lack of action. Whether you are a full-time professional investor or just a casual fan who wants to be involved, you need to be absolutely sure of what you are getting into before getting involved in any crypto opportunity. California has toyed with setting up a crypto-specific business registration process for those looking to do business in the state. The proposed framework was vetoed by Governor Gavin Newsom as the resources required to establish and enforce such a framework would be prohibitive for the state. While this type of compliance infrastructure has not been employed yet, it points to concerns that regulatory authorities have related to the crypto industry. There appears to be a pattern that new industries, especially those that garner as much international attention as crypto, are especially susceptible to fraud. One must go only as far back as cannabis legalization to find the last time California had to deal with fraudulent schemes at this scale. Related: The feds are coming for the metaverse — from Axie Infinity to Bored Apes It appears inevitable that California, known to be a first mover in regulation and compliance, will create some form of crypto-specific compliance infrastructure in the name of consumer protection. If history is any indication, once California releases its framework, other states will follow. Federal and state representatives have been attempting to draft legislation to establish financial standards for crypto with little luck to date. At the federal level, Senators Cory Booker, John Thune, Debbie Stabenow and John Boozman co-sponsored a bill to empower the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to serve as the regulatory body for crypto, while Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Cynthia Lummis co-sponsored a bill to establish more clear guidance on digital assets and virtual currencies. Lawmakers have even reached out to tech luminaries such as Mark Zuckerberg to weigh in on crypto fraud. Source: Chainalysis None of these or other similarly crypto-focused bills are expected to pass in 2022, but this level of bipartisan cooperation has been unprecedented in recent times. The collaboration should reflect just the sheer magnitude of the need for a regulatory framework. Said another way, Democrats and Republicans speaking to one another about anything should stop the presses, but the fact that they are co-sponsoring multiple bills should tell us that there is a monumental requirement for guidance. How should one approach investing in the crypto space if the government is not going to establish controls for crypto? There are a few general points that one should consider if they are presented with a crypto investment opportunity. Related: GameFi developers could be facing big fines and hard time When reviewing any opportunity, do your due diligence! Do not take anyone’s word without some level of substantive support. If crypto is not an area of expertise, reach out to professionals who do have qualified experience. Make sure to utilize crypto monitoring and blockchain analysis tools, if possible, as part of the vetting process. A common strategy of fraudsters is putting undue pressure or artificial timelines on a potential close. Slow down the process and use any and all time necessary to make an investment decision. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. As overplayed as the cliché may be, it does bring up a valid point. There have been instances of schemes offering to pay initial and ongoing dividends for any new investors that are brought in and for additional dividends to be paid from any investors that those new investors bring in. If this sounds like a pyramid or multi-level marketing scheme, that’s because it is. Terms like “No Risk Investment” get thrown around as well. Ultimately, if no one knows where the opportunity is coming from, beware. While crypto can be a fun and electrifying topic with many legitimate opportunities, there are bad players who will take advantage of the lack of government oversight and the excitement of overenthusiastic or undereducated investors. Zach Gordon is a certified public accountant (CPA) and vice president of crypto accounting for Propeller Industries, serving as fractional chief financial officer and adviser to a portfolio of crypto and Web3 clients. He has been named a Forty Under 40 CPA, sits on the Digital Assets Committee for the NYSSCPA and has been working with crypto clients in a variety of capacities since 2016. CPAC Backpedals On Pro-Russia Tweet As Some U.S. Conservatives Back Putin – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/cpac-backpedals-on-pro-russia-tweet-as-some-u-s-conservatives-back-putin-the-washington-post/ Prominent Republicans are digging in against American support for Ukraine despite Russia’s threats to use nuclear weapons and evidence of mass graves and war crimes facilitated by Moscow. The Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday tweeted — and then hours later deleted — a message that called on Democrats to “end the gift-giving to Ukraine” while featuring a fluttering Russian flag. The tweet also referred to “Ukraine-occupied territories,” appearing to legitimize Russian President Vladimir Putin’s claims to annex provinces based on a referendum that the U.S. and allies view as illegal. CPAC chairman Matt Schlapp on Saturday said the tweet did not clear the normal approval process because he was traveling for a conference in Australia. “Due to my travel into a distant time zone it was never approved per usual,” he said in a text message. In a statement, CPAC expressed support for Ukraine but maintained opposition to American aid for the embattled country. “We must oppose Putin, but American taxpayers should not be shouldering the vast majority of the cost,” the statement said. “The tweet belittled the plight of the innocent Ukrainian people.” CPAC has repeatedly flirted with pro-Putin views in recent years, including hosting pro-Russian Hungarian prime minister Victor Orban at a Dallas conference in August. CPAC is not alone among American conservatives in opposing Ukrainian aid despite Putin’s invasion. Fox News host Tucker Carlson has alleged U.S. sabotage for leaks in a Russian gas pipeline to Europe, baseless claims that have earned him airtime on Russian state television. Former president Donald Trump also posted a message on his Truth Social platform offering himself as a negotiator for the conflict. At a Trump rally in Michigan on Saturday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) reiterated her opposition to U.S. aid to Ukraine and said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should negotiate a peace settlement with Russia. “We have so many problems here at home, I cannot even think about sending our money over to fund a proxy war with Russia,” she said in an interview. “Zelensky doesn’t run the United States government. He is not our president, but for some reason Joe Biden bends over every single time. … The American people don’t care about that war over there.” At a rally in Warren, Mich., on Saturday night, Trump suggested he could have prevented Putin from invading Ukraine. “That war would never ever have happened if I were president and it didn’t happen,” Trump said. Many Republicans have followed Trump’s lead in waffling on Putin, whom Trump avoided condemning and sided with over his own intelligence agencies in doubting Russian interference in the 2016 election. Relations with Ukraine became partisan during Trump’s first impeachment, after he tried to use U.S. aid to Ukraine to pressure Zelensky to announce an investigation into Biden and his son Hunter’s business dealings in the country.

Vegas Survivors Signal Hope Even As Mass Shootings Persist – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/vegas-survivors-signal-hope-even-as-mass-shootings-persist-the-washington-post/ LAS VEGAS — It’s been five years since carnage and death sent his family running into the night, leaving them separated and terrified as a gunman rained bullets into an outdoor country music festival crowd on the Las Vegas Strip. The memories don’t fade, they sharpen, William “Bill” Henning said as he prepared for ceremonies in Las Vegas marking the date of the Oct. 1, 2017, massacre. “Chaotic and unreal,” he recalled. “A human stampede. People were bleeding and screaming and running. We all got separated. We didn’t know who was alive. That was the most difficult.” He’s now part of a survivor community thousands strong, one that’s helped him sort through the horror of what happened during the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. Fifty-eight people were killed and more than 850 were injured among a crowd of 22,000. In the years since, the grim drumbeat of mass shootings has continued: schools in Uvalde, Texas, and Parkland, Florida; grocery stores in Buffalo, New York, and Boulder, Colorado; bars in Dayton, Ohio, and Thousand Oaks, California; a city building in Virginia Beach, Virginia; a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. Meanwhile, the debate over gun laws in the U.S. rages on, including a renewed challenge to the federal regulation sparked by the Las Vegas shooting. Nevada U.S. Rep. Dina Titus on Saturday called again for a federal law banning bump stocks, the devices used by the Las Vegas shooter that allow a semi-automatic rifle to fire repeatedly with just one pull of the trigger. They were outlawed by rule by the Trump Administration but face court challenges. And President Joe Biden also called for renewed efforts to tighten firearms laws Saturday while mourning the victims and praising residents who came together in the aftermath of the shooting. The president noted executive action he’s taken to crack down on ghost guns and rogue gun dealers and the passage of the first significant firearms legislation in 30 years. That bipartisan law signed by Biden in June in part boosts protections for domestic violence victims, funnels cash to states for firearms crime prevention and has money for mental health services. “But, we’re not stopping there,” Biden said in a statement. “I am determined to seize this momentum and work with Congress to enact further commonsense gun violence prevention legislation, including banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, which have enabled shooters to slaughter so many innocents.” The Las Vegas massacre is part of a horrifying uptick of shootings with especially high numbers of people killed, said James Alan Fox, a professor of criminology, law and public policy at Northeastern University in Boston. Five of the nine mass shootings in modern U.S. history with more than 20 people killed have taken place since 2016, starting with the Pulse nightclub in Orlando and continuing through the elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. “The severity of public mass shootings has increased in the past few years. That’s clear,” Fox said. “And worrisome.” Fox oversees a database maintained by The Associated Press, USA Today and Northeastern University that tracks mass killings involving four or more people slain, not including the perpetrator. The information is drawn from media reports, FBI data, arrest records, medical examiners’ reports, prison records and other court documents. Watching the steady stream of shootings in the U.S. is tough for survivors, said Tennille Pereira, director of a Clark County recovery and support program called the Vegas Strong Resiliency Center. “I know when it keeps happening, people often express feelings of hopelessness,” Pereira said. “I think the big thing for Las Vegas is to be able to share with those other communities that healing does occur, and that there is hope.” For people like Henning, part of that hope has been the bond formed with other survivors. The retired computer technician was celebrating his 71st birthday at the Route 91 Harvest Festival with friends, his wife, daughter and three teenage grandchildren when the gunfire began. He suffered a knee injury while escaping that required surgery, but his group made it out without being struck by gunfire. “At first, the first few years, it’s not really sinking in,” he said. “The more we organize ourselves, the more that we see each other, it actually brings us back to how serious this situation was.” Many in Las Vegas who won’t name the man who police said fired 1,057 bullets from 32nd floor windows of the Mandalay Bay resort during a span of time now memorialized in a Paramount+ streaming service documentary called “11 Minutes.” “We don’t want to give him any more power, credibility, infamy,” Pereira said. “In this survivor population, words matter. We don’t use the word ‘anniversary.’ We use ‘remembrance.’ We try not to use the word ‘victims.’ We try to use the word ‘survivor.’” Police and the FBI spent months investigating and concluded that gunman Stephen Paddock acted alone, meticulously planned the attack and intentionally concealed his actions. He amassed an arsenal of 23 assault-style rifles in his hotel room, including 14 fitted with bump stock devices that help the weapons fire rapidly. Caches of weapons also were found at Paddock’s homes in Reno and Mesquite, Nevada. But he killed himself before police reached him, and local and federal officials said they never identified a clear motive for the attack. Shortly after the shooting, the administration of then-President Donald Trump banned bump stocks under the same federal laws that prohibit machine guns. Gun-rights advocates sued, saying the weapons didn’t qualify as machine guns and it would take an act of Congress to ban them. The ban has survived several court challenges. But a federal appeals court in New Orleans revived a case there in June, the same day the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a ruling expanding gun rights. That case marked the high court’s first major gun decision in more than a decade and has sparked a wave of court challenges to gun laws around the country. Meanwhile, in Las Vegas, survivors are working toward a permanent memorial on a corner of the former Las Vegas Strip festival ground. A sunrise remembrance ceremony is scheduled Saturday at the Clark County Government Center, and the names of those killed will be read 10:05 p.m. — the time the shooting started — at a downtown Las Vegas Community Healing Garden. Survivor Sue Nelson, 67, said she fled from her front-row seat and hid for hours on the Las Vegas Strip, forming deep bonds with others who escaped. She declared she has “survivor sorrow, not survivor guilt” because she didn’t do anything wrong. Nelson drives two hours to Las Vegas from her home in Lake Havasu, Arizona, for memorial events and gives out lapel pins shaped like little guitars and rubber wrist bands stamped with: “We Remember 10.1.17 #Honors58.” “I’m not afraid anymore,” she said. “It makes a big difference in healing when you’re not afraid anymore.” ___ Whitehurst reported from Washington.
