How To Turn A Desert Vacation Into A Sailing Adventure (Minus The Boat) – Thrillist https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/how-to-turn-a-desert-vacation-into-a-sailing-adventure-minus-the-boat-thrillist/ Spend some time at Ivanpah Dry Lake, nestled in the northern end of the Mojave National Preserve about 30 minutes from Vegas, and you might start to see things. Here on the Pleistocene playa, the lake bed is cracked yet coated with a smooth sheen; the post-apocalyptic setting of mountain-fringed nothingness both dusty and, in the clashing temperatures, veiled with a watery mirage. So much so that when you see the land yachts—curious three-wheeled wind-powered buggies slicing through the nothingness with shark-like fins—you might believe they’re actual sailboats. And depending on when you visit, you may even spot an influx of boats that don’t float. Because unlike other dry lake beds in the area—utilized year-round for everything from off-road adventures to camping to art-festival shenanigans to filming movies like Casino—the Bureau of Land Management takes measures to preserve Ivanpah for the use of non-motorized wind craft. It’s thus considered one of the smoothest landsailing courses in the world, akin to ice boating’s frozen lakes. And with winds gusting up to 50 miles per hour, it’s a regular destination for adrenaline junkies participating in elite regattas like the America’s Land Sailing Cup, a multi-vehicle competition put on by the North American Land Sailing Association, as well as the solo-style Blokart Worlds (it rhymes with go-cart). Goin’ fast on Ivanpah, apparently sponsored by Smirnoff. | Bob Martin/Hulton Archive/Getty Images It was here in Ivanpah that British engineer Richard Jenkins set the record for land yachting, reaching a whopping 126.1 miles per hour in the sleek alien-like Ecotricity Greenbird, which favored a carbon airplane-like wing over a sail (land yachts indeed come in all shapes and sizes). It was also here that the latest Blokart record was set, tied by two competitors—AKA pilots—in 2018. “They were out on the playa and they looked at each other and could see one of those dust storms coming their way,” says Andrew Sands, co-owner of Bonaire Landsailing Adventures and an internationally-ranked pilot himself. “They gave a thumbs up that they were gonna take their chances and keep on sailing.” That day, Scott Young from Arizona and Dave Lussier from Rhode Island both defied the odds by clocking in at a record 77.7 miles per hour—all with their bums hovering just a few inches off the ground. Before a couple of months ago, I’d never even heard of land sailing, let alone seen a yacht on wheels. But then I found myself in the breezy Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire, watching the wind-powered go-karts whip around and around a rubbly oval track. Here, some riders could care less about speed. And why would they, when the scenery beckons you to relax? To the right, the sea splashed high up against rocks, while on the left, a bored donkey stood, grazing near cacti. Every so often, an iguana would cross the track. “I’m pretty sure there’s an iguana brothel on the center of the track at the top there,” says Donna Hudgeon, co-owner of the company and Sands’s wife. “I’d be surprised if you hadn’t seen an iguana.” Though it’s the first time the sport and I have crossed paths, some iteration of land sailing has been around pretty much since wheels became light enough to be mobilized by wind power. There’s evidence Ancient Egyptians tooled around on their version of the vehicle, while texts and paintings suggest that the Ming Dynasty was rife with carriages equipped with sails. During Westward Expansion in the 19th century, the US had their own wind-powered carts, including—in true American style—one resourceful entrepreneur who attempted to bypass horses and harness the wind for profit, using it to transport passengers over the rolling plains. It failed on its maiden voyage, but he still earned an enviable nickname: Wind Wagon Thomas. In 1898, a pair of Belgian brothers created what is regarded as the first-ever recreational land yacht, followed by the first competition in Belgium in 1909. Increased vehicle production led to land yachting clubs springing up on the beaches of France in the 1950s. While the rest of the world typically powered their sand buggies with ocean breezes, when the US got in on the action about a decade later, it prompted a convergence of individualist inventors intent on making good use of the country’s ample dry lake beds and rugged deserts. Today, the sport goes by a slew of monikers around the world, tailored to the countries that practice them and the terrain they race: From sand sailing to land yachting, beach sailing, wind karting, char à voile (France) and carrovelismo (Argentina). The most illustrious? Dirt boating. That one’s all American. In the US, you’re probably most likely to encounter the homegrown Manta Landsailer, first produced in 1974 in Oakland, California. But in Bonaire, the vehicles of choice are Blokarts—also with its own verb, blokarting—a relative newcomer in the history of the sport and perhaps the easiest for a beginner to navigate. The buggies were created in 1999 when Paul Beckett, an avid land sailor and hang glider, wanted to create a more accessible toy that allowed everyday consumers to zip around the beaches of New Zealand. Unlike the Manta, which you steer with your feet, Blokarts only require your hands for both steering and adjusting the sail , making it adaptable for a variety of users including paraplegics and lower extremity amputees. The karts also fold up neatly into a suitcase for transport, and are easily assembled once you’re ready to hit the sand. Throw it in your trunk and take it to the beach, or check it at the airport for your competition at Ivanpah. Sails come in three sizes and the whole rig starts at around $4,000 each. “New Zealanders tend to be very inventive, DIY kind of people. There were versions of land yachts out there, but nothing that was repeatable, just something someone put together in their garage,” says Hudgeon. “So when Blokart hit the scene, that was it. Everyone just jumped onto it like ‘Hey, this is super easy.’” For one half of the Bonaire Landsailing Adventures husband-wife team, it was definitely love at first sight. “Paul sent me out on the track with his Blokart to give it a try, and he had to come out at the end of the day to collect me,” recalls Sands. “I was still sailing around the track.” Today, Blokart is sold in 27 countries, including Bonaire. Already a go-to for kitesurfing and wind sailing (Bonaire is a breeding ground for some of the world’s top windsurfers), opening a land sailing venture on the island seemed like a natural fit. Hudgeon and Sands looked at wind profiles—the space had to be flat and breezy year-round—but what clinched it was the personality of the island itself. “The thing about Bonaire, is that the people that come here aren’t necessarily the kind that want to bob around on a beach,” says Hudgeon. “They’re doing people. They’re active.” That is exactly what I’m there for: to do. Sporting my helmet and a pair of provided gloves, I half-listen to the debriefing—things like pull the rope to speed up, let it out to slow down, have fun. But watching participants circle the track in their little papooses, I get a little nervous. The truth is, I’ve never been good on wheels. In fact, I think the word once used to describe my driving skills was “nuisance.” Apparently, if you have sailing experience and know your tacks from your jibes, that can help. I don’t, but I’m assured no experience is necessary. “We get all types,” says Hudgeon. “The hotshots who are like ‘Whoa this is a lot more fun that I thought it would be,’ the nervous people who are proud of themselves that they’ve done something that they didn’t think they could do, and the grandmothers that show up and say there’s no way they’re gonna go out there, that they’re just there to take the photo.” Yet after some convincing, those grandmas get out on the track and it’s an entirely different story: “They realize how easy it is and how much control they have, and it’s just so funny to see them out there egging on and racing the grandkids.” The trick, I later find out, is to start off cautiously, getting to know the track over a couple of revolutions before getting fancy. The point is to feel the nuances of the wind and the sensitive adjustments to the rope. If you lose steam and get stuck, no big—someone will be there to push you back in. It’s pretty much idiot-proof. Unless, of course, you try to do too much, too soon. I witness this as a guy—a “hotshot,” Hudgeon would say—comes speeding too fast around a turn, trying to overtake a buddy. He goes up on two wheels and promptly tips over. Luckily, he remembered to keep his elbows inside the steel cage—something else we’re told in the debriefing. After checking him out, Hudgeon finds the only thing bruised is his ego. To get started with land sailing, you don’t need to buy your own vehicle just yet. Donna advises finding a club or course near you via the North American Land Sailing Association, Blokart’s website, or the International Sand Yachting Federation. They’ll usually have one on hand you can try out. Through these sites, you’ll also find retailers and plenty of ways to link up with like-minded adventurers. I make a note to check it out when I get back home—New York and New Jersey have a few club locations that look promising. Back on the course in Bonaire, though, it takes just a few laps, including a little bit of stalling and a lot of bumping into the tires lining the course, but I eventually get the hang of it. The only obstacle I can’t avoid? A resident iguana leisurely snaking his way across my path. Want more Thrillist? Follow us on Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, TikTok, and Snapchat! Drinking 2-3 Cups Of Coffee A Day Can Lower Cardiovascular Disease Ris – Healthline https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/drinking-2-3-cups-of-coffee-a-day-can-lower-cardiovascular-disease-ris-healthline/ New research suggests drinking 2 to 3 cups of ground coffee daily can significantly reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and increase your lifespan. Getty Images A study has found a link between coffee drinking and longer life. It also found coffee was associated with a lower risk for cardiovascular disease. Two to three cups per day appeared to be the sweet spot for these benefits. Experts say moderate coffee consumption can be a part of a heart-healthy lifestyle. They note, however, that too much coffee may increase the risk of adverse effects. New research published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology has found an association between coffee drinking and living longer. The study also found that there was a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Specifically, this effect was observed among those who drank around two to three cups of coffee per day. All types of coffee, including ground, instant, and decaf, appeared to provide this health benefit. According to the authors, the goal of the study was to look at how drinking various types of coffee might impact the risk for episodes of irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia), cardiovascular disease, and death. To conduct the study, the researchers used data from the UK Biobank, a large, ongoing study that provides researchers with medical and genetic data from around 500,000 volunteers between ages 40 and 69. The median age of the people involved in the study was 58. Women made up 55.3% of the group. The types of cardiovascular disease included were coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, and ischemic stroke. Altogether, 449,564 people who did not have arrhythmia or cardiovascular disease at the start of the study were recruited. Respondents were asked about how many cups of coffee they drank on a daily basis, as well as what type of coffee they drank. They were then placed in a category based on their level of consumption. There was also a group of non-coffee drinkers for comparison. Medical records and death records were used to assess how the groups did over time. The researchers found at follow-up that all types of coffee were associated with a reduced risk for death from any cause. In addition, the greatest reduction in risk was observed in those who drank two to three cups per day. Ground coffee was linked to the greatest reduction in risk, with a 27% lower likelihood of death compared to those who did not drink coffee. Instant coffee provided the least reduction in risk at 11%. However, all types of coffee appeared to provide some protection. When it came to cardiovascular disease, all types of coffee were linked to a reduction in cardiovascular incidents. This effect was also seen at a consumption level of two to three cups per day. Ground coffee again provided the most reduction in risk at 20%, while decaf provided the least reduction at 6%. Both instant coffee and ground were associated with fewer incidents of arrhythmia. However, decaf did not seem to provide any benefit. The lowest level of risk was seen at four to five cups of ground coffee, while the effect was seen at a consumption level of two to three cups of instant coffee. Dr. Debabrata Mukherjee, chairman of the department of internal medicine and professor of internal medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso, who was not involved in this study, summarized: “This and other available data suggests that drinking modest amounts of coffee (two to three cups a day) of all types have some cardioprotective effects.” Mukherjee said that, while the study itself does not address this question, it might have to do with the presence of caffeine in coffee. “Caffeine has antiarrhythmic properties,” said Mukherjee, “particularly through the inhibition of adenosine (a chemical found in human cells) receptors. Endogenous adenosine shortens refractory periods in both the atrium (upper chamber of the heart) and ventricle (lower chamber of the heart) and consequently increases the risk of arrhythmias; and by blocking adenosine receptors, caffeinated coffee may mitigate the effects of endogenous (present in the body) adenosine and protect against arrhythmias.” He said that this could explain why caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee affected the incidence of arrhythmias in this study differently. Mukherjee further noted that, while caffeine is the most well-known constituent in coffee, it actually contains over 100 biologically active components. “It is possible that some of the non-caffeinated compounds may be responsible for the benefits observed with coffee drinking, i.e., less cardiovascular disease, and improved survival,” he explained. Dr. Jim Liu, a cardiologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, advises that it’s best to drink coffee in moderation, noting that, it’s generally safe and also has potential benefits for long-term cardiovascular health. “However, coffee is a stimulant,” he cautions, “and can have short-term effects such as increased blood pressure and palpitations.” “If someone is drinking excessive amounts or to the point that they are feeling poorly from bothersome palpitations, sleep deprivation, or other adverse effects, then it would be best to cut back,” he added. He also advises that people should be aware of what they are adding to their coffee, such as sugar. “Some coffee beverages and preparations contain large amounts of sugar and are high in calories, and consuming a lot of those may counteract the benefits of the actual coffee itself.” When it comes to people who don’t already drink coffee, however, Liu said he would advise that people only drink it if they want to or enjoy it. “Certainly, drinking coffee has been associated with other health benefits, but if coffee drinking isn’t for you, I wouldn’t force it just for the health benefits.” If you do opt to drink coffee in light of its potential health benefits, Liu pointed out that there are some side effects to be aware of. “Coffee is a stimulant and can cause short-term effects such as increased blood pressure and palpitations. It may also have adverse effects on sleep,” he said. If you are taking medications for hypertension, there could be some concerns as well. Caffeine may reduce the effect of some blood pressure medications, said Liu. Mukherjee agreed with Liu’s statements, noting that “all types [of coffee] have some cardioprotective effects and can be enjoyed as part of a heart-healthy behavior.” “I would suggest that folks enjoy their coffee or tea (based on preference) and live a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

Jason Heyward Plans To Play In 2023 – On Tap Sports Net https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/jason-heyward-plans-to-play-in-2023-on-tap-sports-net/ Jason Heyward spoke with reporters today about his appreciation for the Cubs’ franchise and playing in 2023. Before today’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward spoke with the media about his plans for the 2023 season. According to Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network, the veteran outfielder plans to play next season. Heyward, who hasn’t played in a game since June 24 because of a knee injury, was informed earlier this year by team president Jed Hoyer that the Cubs would be parting ways with him at the end of the 2022 season. The two-time Gold Glove winner and 2016 World Series Champion spoke with media members today about how he wasn’t surprised the organization wanted to move on, and he appreciated them being real with him. “I’ll appreciate that they’re real,” Heyward said. “I appreciate being able to have that. It’s tough when you don’t have those things, showing up for any job or living life.” After signing an eight-year, $184 million contract in 2016, Heyward went on to post a slash line of .245/.323/.377 in a little over six seasons with the Cubs, with 62 home runs, 289 RBI, 111 doubles, and 32 stolen bases. Was it the greatest production ever from an eight-year contract? No, but many fans would argue that without Heyward, the Cubs would’ve never won a World Series for the first time in 108 years in 2016. Scroll to continue “I feel like I’m in a select group of players that have earned bad contracts,” Heyward said. “I also know I had my hand in a lot of winning baseball in Chicago.” Heyward continued to say he plans to play in 2023 and that he will “wait to see what opportunities present themselves.” He also plans to continue to live in Chicago.  On Tap Sports Net Bringing you articles, podcasts, and videos to keep you up to date with what’s On Tap in Chicago sports news

Amazons ambient Intelligence Spin Sounds A Lot Like Corporate Surveillance Mashable
Amazons ambient Intelligence Spin Sounds A Lot Like Corporate Surveillance Mashable
Amazon’s ‘ambient Intelligence’ Spin Sounds A Lot Like Corporate Surveillance – Mashable https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/amazons-ambient-intelligence-spin-sounds-a-lot-like-corporate-surveillance-mashable/ Amazon’s always listening. Credit: Image: Mashable composite; Amazon, Shutterstock / TWStock, Xaki646 Back in my day, you turned devices off when you didn’t need to use them. But in the age of Amazon, your “smart” home and its ecosystem of gadgets will ideally always be turned on. That vision even has a cool-sounding name: ambient intelligence. It’s A.I. with a new spin and the promise of a (corporate) bear hug. While I’m not anywhere near old enough to have truly earned my rose-tinted, geezer mindset, I am wrinkled just enough to remember a time before every device was connected to the internet; before the internet of things. So when I look at the direction Amazon is taking its ever-expanding hardware business and the welcoming, futuristic-sounding spin it’s using to sell this to consumers, well, I just can’t kick this dire feeling in my gut. At a device announcement event on Wednesday, Amazon laid out its vision for “ambient intelligence” (an obvious play on artificial intelligence), a term the company has used since at least 2021. Here’s what Amazon meant by that at the time. “In the ambient-intelligence vision, an AI service such as Alexa makes sense of the state of your environment, including devices, sensors, objects, people, and activity around you, to help you in every situation where you need assistance — either reactively (customer initiated) or proactively (AI initiated).” Amazon cut through all that tech jargon at its event with a bunch of practical examples of how ambient intelligence will play out. It added a new bedside sleep tracker called Halo Rise (which is kind of a Google Nest ripoff) and an always-on TV to a long list of devices in the company’s roster of things you’re supposed to plug in, turn on, and… stop thinking about. While no one would deny the usefulness of products like a Ring video doorbell or an Echo smart speaker, Amazon’s marketing speak for “ambient intelligence” sounds a whole lot like giving away the entire infrastructure of your life to one megacorporation with a long history of privacy issues. Inviting Bezos into every room Tweet may have been deleted (opens in a new tab) Of course, Amazon didn’t just start mobilizing its ambient intelligence operation overnight. This has been years in the making, arguably ever since the Alexa virtual assistant came into being in 2014. Since then, Amazon has been working towards making sure you can’t walk into any room in your home without engaging with one of its products, like Echo smart speakers, smart locks for doors, and even thermostats. It’s a virtual finger in every household pie. In the ideal Amazon-run home, this pervasive tech-web would exist moments before you even step inside. Let’s take a tour: First, wave hello to the Ring video doorbell as we approach the front door. (Hi, Jeff!) You don’t have to worry about protecting your home from potential threats anymore — Amazon will keep an eye out. Sure, you might get sent a motion-tracker notification, but you can just swipe that away like you swipe away most Ring notifications because it usually means there’s a squirrel outside. (But, hey, maybe one time it will actually detect something bad and Amazon can give the footage away to cops without your permission. Convenience!) It’s tracking every squirrel and bird out there. Credit: Smith Collection/Gado/Getty Images Now, wipe your shoes on the mat and follow me into the living room where have a 75-inch Amazon Omni TV that never. turns. off. Say bye-bye to the boring black screens that have signified that a TV is not in use for decades — this TV will show you widgets, photos, and other… things! This is all very helpful, of course, because it will draw your attention to the fact that a giant screen is in the room. Okay, maybe you don’t intend on using it now, but that’s not the point. There’s a chance that simply looking at it might seed the thought of watching something into your brain. Something on Prime Video, perhaps? I hear The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is good. Next, follow me as we go down to the lovely basement in our Casa de Alexa. Feeling too cold in the ol’ man-cave? Just give Alexa a shout and she’ll adjust the temperature using the connected thermostat. WiFi struggling to cover everything downstairs? Simply expand it with an Eero router network, silly, which (you guessed it) is owned by Amazon. Heck, if you need to heat up some Pizza Rolls, Alexa can take care of that with this microwave. Sounds convenient, huh? Now, are you ready to sign (over your privacy) on the dotted line? I think you’re starting to get the picture. The idea here is for every room to have some kind of ambient Amazon device whirring in the background — whether it’s a doorbell on the porch, a TV in the living room, or a weird contactless sleep tracker on your bedside table. Of course, you’ll also have Echo speakers strewn throughout the place, which you can use to ask Alexa to play music, or tell you the weather, or simply to turn the lights on or off. (I actually had an old roommate who would shout at Alexa to turn the lights off while he stood next to the light switch.) The only room that’s safe from Amazon — for now — is the bathroom. Who knows, though? Maybe Amazon will release an Alexa-powered toilet or bidet. The company recently spent $3.9 billion on the primary care provider One Medical, so it’s possible Amazon can quietly measure your gut health, too. Alexa, live my life for me? Do you trust Astro? Credit: Amazon The point to all of Amazon’s ambient intelligence machinations is, above all else, to make you buy products. That’s not surprising or even sinister in and of itself, but innocently buying a smart speaker so you can request songs hands-free could lead down a road of buying a Ring camera, then a Halo Rise sleep tracker, then an always-on TV, and so on. Eventually, Alexa ends up owning your home — not you. And if that’s how some people want to live, then more power to them. But for me, having this intricate spider web of one company’s devices constantly monitoring my every move sounds more suffocating than liberating. Heck, the Amazon Astro robot can move with you. Don’t worry, though, it’s just ambient intelligence that’s powering the cute little surveillance robot as it learns the ins and outs of your home. Attach a marketing term to it and suddenly it’s less unnerving. It all feels like a way to make people self-enforce and shrug off corporate surveillance with a smile. Sure, there’s a history of Amazon employees listening in on Alexa conversations and even tracking location data, but at least Alexa can give you the score of the Thursday Night Football game, which also happens to be broadcast exclusively by Amazon.  I wasn’t joking when I said Amazon has a finger in every single pie. What’s worse is that Amazon knows its notorious reputation when it comes to privacy and now has to briefly acknowledge when a product doesn’t have a camera or microphone, like it did during the Halo Rise announcement. Maybe the data these devices pull is encrypted very well, but ultimately, a device that’s always monitoring you is a device that’s always compromising you in some way. Tweet may have been deleted (opens in a new tab) It’s just marketing I don’t want to be a doomer about this stuff (and I only have so much room to talk as a Prime subscriber myself), but I’m just worried about a world where we can’t escape Amazon. I don’t want an Amazon-branded doohickey to tell me how I’m sleeping because chances are I already have a pretty good idea of that. (Pretty well, lately.) I don’t want a TV that’s always on because sometimes it’s nice to turn the TV off and be alone with my thoughts for a while. And I really, really don’t want a creepy little robot following me around the house like a pet. Maybe this is an overreaction to something you could reasonably describe as advertising spin. “Ambient intelligence” definitely sounds like it came out of a boardroom. If you make something sound like it exists in a benevolent sci-fi utopia, it’s less threatening to consumers, right? And judging by Amazon’s massive success over the years, the sales folks over there clearly know what they’re doing. Look, I like technology because it’s fun to use. The problem here is that Amazon’s trying to make technology that uses you to harvest data — be it for advertising, police investigations, or whatever else — and polish it up so it seems squeaky clean instead of dystopian. You do what you want with your life, but personally, I’m going to keep my home as analog as possible. U.S. Judge Does Not Require Trump To Attest That FBI’s List Of Seized Records Is Accurate – Reuters.com https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/u-s-judge-does-not-require-trump-to-attest-that-fbis-list-of-seized-records-is-accurate-reuters-com/ Former U.S. President Donald Trump rallies with his supporters at Wilmington International Airport in Wilmington, North Carolina, U.S. September 23, 2022. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File Photo WASHINGTON, Sept 29 (Reuters) – A federal judge on Thursday ruled that former President Donald Trump does not have to provide the court with a sworn statement attesting to whether he believes the list of items seized by the FBI from his Florida estate is accurate and complete. The order from U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon came after U.S. Senior Judge Raymond Dearie, appointed as special master at Trump’s request to oversee a review of the records seized from Mar-a-lago, had ordered Trump’s lawyers to let him know if they disputed the accuracy of the government’s property inventory list. Trump has claimed, without evidence, that the FBI may have planted evidence when it searched Mar-a-lago on Aug. 8. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Late on Wednesday, Trump’s lawyers lodged a complaint with the court about Dearie’s demand, saying it exceeded the scope of Dearie’s authority. “There shall be no separate requirement on [Trump] at this stage, prior to the review of any of the seized materials, to lodge ex ante final objections to the accuracy of [the government’s] inventory, its descriptions, or its contents,” Cannon wrote in her order. “The court’s appointment order did not contemplate that obligation,” she added. The government has said it carted away more than 11,000 records, about 100 of them marked as classified. The Justice Department, which was also ordered to provide a sworn statement attesting to the accuracy of the inventory, has made some amendments to its list, such as adding 53 documents. Dearie was appointed by Cannon over objections from the Justice Department to review the more than 11,000 records seized from Mar-a-lago on Aug. 8. He is required to weed out any records that could be subject to claims of attorney-client privilege or executive privilege, a legal doctrine that can shield some White House communications from disclosure. Initially Cannon ordered him to include the classified materials in his review, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit reversed that decision after the Justice Department filed an appeal. On Wednesday, Trump’s lawyers told Dearie they objected to his request to address whether they disputed the accuracy of the FBI’s property inventory list, claiming such a demand “exceeds the grant of authority” that Cannon gave the special master. They said it is hard to find a vendor who can process the records in time to meet the deadlines. The roughly 11,000 records, they say, amount to about 200,000 pages. The S&P 500 plummeted 2.1% to a fresh 2022 low, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average erased more than 450 points, or around 1.5%. The Nasdaq Composite sank 2.8%. Technology stocks led the slide lower as heavily weighted Apple (AAPL) shares erased roughly 5% on concerns around waning demand that prompted a downgrade from Bank of America. Analysts warned in a note out Thursday that BofA’s research team “expects the demand trajectory to worsen.” A report from Bloomberg also revealed one of Apple’s most senior executives was leaving the company after he turned up in a viral TikTok video making an off-color joke. Apple’s declines began Wednesday following a report the tech giant is backing off plans to increase production of its new iPhones this year after demand for the product failed to meet expectations. Elsewhere in corporate news, Meta Platforms (META) announced plans to restructure teams and reduce headcount for the first time in the company’s history, telling staff the “macroeconomy remains tough and volatile.” Shares closed down 3.7%. CarMax (KMX) shares also tumbled nearly 25% after the vehicle buyer reported second-quarter earnings that missed Wall Street estimates, citing “affordability challenges” that weighed on sales. And Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) fell 4% on Thursday after the company posted a wider quarterly loss as persistent merchandising and inventory snafus and inflationary pressures hit the home goods retailer. On the economic data front, initial jobless claims slid to 193,000, the lowest since April, in the week ended Sept. 24 from a downwardly revised 213,000 the prior week, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists called for 215,000 claims, according to consensus estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Elsewhere, a third reading from the Commerce Department on gross domestic product (GDP) showed U.S. economic activity contracted at an annualized 0.6%. The renewed risk-off mood in the market places all three major averages on pace to give up most of the gains that came after England’s central bank said Wednesday it would resume bond purchases to help stabilize financial and currency markets. Investors celebrated the shift away from aggressive policy tightening by officials in recent months. The S&P 500, Dow, and Nasdaq each rallied roughly 2%. EY Parthenon Chief Economist Gregory Daco said in a note that “the absence of proper policy coordination along with the speed and synchronization of rate hikes” risks an “excessive and disorderly tightening of financial conditions.” “In the UK, the economic outlook has recently taken a turn for the worse with the release of Prime Minister Liz Truss’ budget leading to a market rout, with treasury yields surging to their highest since 2010 and the British pound plunging to its lowest level in 37 years,” Daco said. Following the Bank of England’s intervention Wednesday – the purchase of around 65 billion pounds, or roughly $69 million, of long-dated gilts – British 30-year bond yields tumbled 100 basis points after touching a two-decade high. A man stands outside the Bank of England in London, Britain, September 28, 2022. REUTERS/Hannah McKay In the U.S. on Thursday, Treasury yields nudged higher after rising — and then falling — at the fastest pace in decades. On Wednesday, the benchmark 10-year Treasury note — a crucial economic benchmark — briefly hit 4%, hitting an important milestone amid the worst bond sell-off since 1949. Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said on Wednesday that the decision by his central bank peers across the Atlantic to return to bond buying did not change his views on U.S. Federal Reserve policy or stoke fears England’s economic faults could pour over. “I would expect growth to be below trend, we would start to see demand for a wider range of products start to soften, and we would start to see labor markets start to be more rationalized,” Bostic said, adding that if job openings fall substantially, officials may contemplate stopping and holding at that level. — Alexandra Semenova is a reporter for Yahoo Finance. Fire Marshal Extends Open Burning, Recreational Fire Ban Indefinitely – The Reflector https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/fire-marshal-extends-open-burning-recreational-fire-ban-indefinitely-the-reflector/ The Reflector Clark County Fire Marshal Dan Young has indefinitely extended the open burning and recreational fire ban. The ban will remain in place until Clark County gets a significant rain event, stated a news release. A notice will be put out by the county when the bans are ended. Young said the preventative measure aims to reduce the risk of grass or brush fires in the county. It’s in line with the Department of Natural Resources and other counties in Southwest Washington.  “The burn ban has historically been removed on Oct. 1 since we typically have at least one significant rain event in mid to late September, but this year has been unseasonably dry,” Young stated in the release. “At this time, the weather forecast does not show any rainfall in the next two weeks. If conditions change and we get enough rain, we will lift the ban.” People are encouraged to create a defensible space around their homes to help prevent wildfires from spreading to a residence or vice versa. Young recommends people remove fuel within three to five feet of foundations, outbuildings, garages and sheds; within 10 feet of a house; under decks and porches; and from gutters, eaves, porches and decks. People should also cut the lawn if it is brown and dispose of the debris and cuttings, prune trees so the lowest branches are six to 10 feet above the ground, and landscape with native and flame-resistant plants. Self-contained camp stoves are not included in the ban, stated the release.

How To Cancel Travel Plans To Florida After Hurricane Ian – WWLP.com https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/how-to-cancel-travel-plans-to-florida-after-hurricane-ian-wwlp-com/ CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Hurricane Ian has pummelled the state of Florida leaving many without homes. However, Florida is a popular vacation spot and this storm has ruined travel plans as well. You are going to have to prepare yourself to spend a lot of time on the phone to secure your reimbursements. Florida is the second most traveled to state in the U.S. and many people who may have trips planned to the Sunshine State are seeing those plans disrupted by Hurricane Ian. First, let’s talk about flights. Are you entitled to a refund? The U.S. Department of Transportation states a consumer is entitled to a refund if the airline cancels the flight, regardless of the reason. Not only are you entitled to the ticket price, but also any associated fees. Many airlines try and push credit, so you might have to speak up if you want your cash back. Travel experts 22News spoke to underscore the need for travel insurance. “Things have changed in my 35 years of business, right? If you had asked me five years ago, Doreen do I buy insurance? I pretty much would have said ‘no.’ The pandemic changed things so the catastrophes are changing things. The hurricane in Puerto Rico, the hurricane in Florida., that’s changed a lot you’ve got to look at that.” Coakley Rodriguez, owner of Doreen’s Going Places Travel Services Next hotels and resorts, they often have their own cancellation policies so you will have to work with the hotel staff on getting your money back. Most bookings are refundable if you cancel 48 hours in advance. Travel insurance can run anywhere from just under $100 to more than $300 depending on the cost of your trip, but that additional could end up saving you in the long run.

Workforce Reductions Announced At Dunkirk’s ImmunityBio | News, Sports, Jobs – Evening Observer https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/workforce-reductions-announced-at-dunkirks-immunitybio-news-sports-jobs-evening-observer/ OBSERVER Photo by Braden Carmen ImmunityBio took over the former Athenex plant in February. Citing “construction needs” at what was described just years ago as a state-of-the-art facility, ImmunityBio confirmed there will be fewer workers at its Dunkirk plant for up to a year and a half. However, at least two sources, one who said he was a worker, said the company laid off all but a handful of employees without prior notice after they were gathered Thursday. News of the employee drawdown came following an ” in-depth review” of the state-funded facility at 3805 Lake Shore Drive, the lease of which was acquired by ImmunityBio in February of this year from Athenex. A spokeswoman for the California-based clinical-stage immunotherapy company said it was determined that the plant “has construction needs that may take approximately 12 to 18 months in order to enable the facility to be used as it has been intended.” She added, in a statement to the OBSERVER, “For this reason, we will need fewer employees during the construction period. That said, we remain committed to the Dunkirk area and the large-scale manufacturing facility.” An employee, who wished not to be identified, said they were gathered Thursday inside the plant’s cafeteria and informed the facility needed work that could last more than a year. The employee estimated that up to 40 were laid off in a variety of departments, including plant services, micro-bilogy and office workers. He also stated that employees were notified Thursday they could re-apply for their jobs after the upgrades were finished. Today’s breaking news and more in your inbox

Come play at the Franklin Institute — in a Roblox metaverse CurioCity. (Courtesy image) The Franklin Institute is extending its STEM education reach to the metaverse. Today at 6 p.m. EST, the Logan Square-based science center is launching an immersive Roblox experience called CurioCity. The Franklin Institute partnered with MELON, a metaverse development company, for the project, which incorporates features of the organization’s exhibits into the game. CurioCity will be available for free on Roblox and is open to people of all ages (though we know that kids love Roblox). It features mini games and two immersive escape rooms, one on a moon base and one about the human body. The escape rooms can be completed by one player or by a team, and they each require players to complete puzzles, earn rewards and collect items, all while learning about scientific topics. Check it out “We designed this experience to be fun and to capture some of the thrills of exploration and discovery that have always spurred scientific progress,” said Josh Neuman, co-CEO at MELON, in a statement. “Though it’s all about what works in Roblox, the Franklin Institute’s exhibits, collections, and overall philosophy inspired many of the elements we incorporated into the games, and we collaborated closely on the unique visual world we created.” CurioCity in Roblox. (Courtesy image) The Franklin Institute’s chief experience and strategy officer, Abby Bysshe, told Technical.ly that the org was put in touch with MELON through one of its board members. MELON was starting an educational game branch, and because of their design style and the type of experiences they create, it made sense for the Franklin Institute to partner with them, she said. “They’ve done a lot of brand stuff, they’ve done a lot of event-driven things,” Bysshe said. “They have a really good knowledge base of educational games. They’ve worked with a couple other institutions prior to us. So it felt like a good partnership from a look and feel and experience perspective.” Bysshe said CurioCity is part of a larger digital initiative the Franklin Institute is working on, including podcasts and video series. The goal is to reach a wider audience than just the people who would come to the museum. “Metaverse platforms like Roblox are a logical next step for The Franklin Institute, providing a highly relevant medium to connect with future audiences at a young age and pique their curiosity about science and technology,” Bysshe said in a statement. “Through CurioCity on Roblox, we are reaching a community of young thinkers where they are already socializing, creating, and sharing experiences together with friends, and are introducing valuable insights and resources to these new audiences in a highly engaging and entertaining way.” She told Technical.ly that the escape rooms in CurioCity coincide with space and human body exhibits they are working on at the actual museum. CurioCity space escape room. (Courtesy image) Bysshe said her team wanted the visual experience to reflect the creative way of approaching science that the Franklin Institute implements in all its experiences. “It’s a natural fit for us experientially to go from that interactive play that we have in our building to gamifying that in an escape room, puzzle solving way so it made a lot of sense for us to go from what we do currently into the gaming space,” she said. “So I’m really happy with how it turned out and excited for people to experience it.” Sarah Huffman is a 2022-2023 corps member for Report for America, an initiative of The Groundtruth Project that pairs young journalists with local newsrooms. And if your tweens and teens need more action-packed fun to keep them entertained, some cruise ships act like floating amusement parks with zip lines, racetracks, roller coasters, ice skating rinks, laser tag, waterslides and more. If you’re considering a family getaway or a multigenerational vacation, these top cruise lines offer some of the most exciting and entertaining options to keep teens and tweens – and their parents – happy and engaged at sea. New policies may be in place, including capacity restrictions, reservation requirements or mask mandates; in addition, certain cruise offerings may be temporarily suspended. Check with your chosen cruise line, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the U.S. Department of State before traveling.) MSC Cruises (Courtesy of MSC Cruises) MSC Cruises offers plenty of family fun and activities for teens on its ships, including sports tournaments, waterslides and a family disco. On select ships, you’ll also find a full-size MSC Formula Racer, interactive XD cinema, a virtual reality experience, zip lines and an arcade room. The line’s Young Club programming offers daily activities for 12- to 14-year-old kids while teens 15 to 17 can participate in sports and dance competitions and video game tournaments at the Teen Club. Older kids can also take part in fun themed events, karaoke and even flash mobs – and there’s a teen-only disco. On the new MSC Seascape (set to debut in December 2022), teens can stay busy in three new concept spaces. “Future” features a state-of-the-art technology area with the latest generation consoles, VR and video screens for hours of entertainment. “Chill out” is just as it sounds – a place to hang out, chat, and play foosball and table tennis. Meanwhile, “Music” is a dance club where kids can choose their own tunes and dance the night away with cool lighting and sound effects. And if that’s not enough, ROBOTRON, the first of its kind at sea, is an amusement park-like ride that combines the thrill of a roller coaster with personalized music and lighting. MSC Seascape also has a VR 360-degree flight simulator, VR motorcycles and high-tech gadgets for teens. MSC World Europa – another new ship debuting in December 2022 – boasts the largest and most engaging kids area in MSC Cruises’ fleet with an impressive 8,245 square feet of action-packed space. The new TEENS LAB features a completely immersive, technologically advanced and modern area for teenagers with more than 20 of the latest consoles, seven VR stations and dozens of video games. Drone Academy 2.0 is a high-energy relay race where youths have to navigate through 15 obstacles with POV cameras, VR and glow effects. There’s even more onboard fun at Z Active, a new sports program that offers basketball, football and zorb ball alongside two firsts for the line – pickleball and hoverboards. [Looking to plan a cruise on MSC Cruises? See the top cruises on GoToSea, a service of U.S. News.] Norwegian Cruise Line (Courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Line) Norwegian Cruise Line boasts a teen-only venue, Entourage, that caters to young adults 13 to 17 years old. This supervised space – available on 15 of the line’s 18 ships – keeps teens busy in an adult-free lounge that’s filled with video games, movies, music, arts and sports. Teen counselors plan the activities and challenges to keep kids entertained throughout the cruise – and host the events that take place in Entourage. A list of detailed activities is available on embarkation day so teens can plan out their schedule for the cruise. The line’s newest ship, Norwegian Prima, the first vessel in the Prima class, features many first-at-sea innovations perfect for entertaining families and energetic teens, including a three-level racetrack called Prima Speedway. The new racetrack is 22 percent longer than the racetrack on Norwegian Encore and the speedway now passes through the funnel of the ship. With 14 nail-biting turns – and cars reaching up to 30 miles per hour – the racetrack is one of the highest-rated attractions on the ship. Adventurous teens will also want to check out The Drop & Rush: Billed as the fastest slides at sea, these chutes offer thrill-seekers a heart-pumping 10-story freefall plunge. If that’s not enough action, teens can also play Bull’s Eye, a classic game of darts that uses a video tracking system, or check out Tee Time for a pumped-up version of mini-golf set against a Las Vegas backdrop where you can compete for prizes. In The Galaxy Pavilion, an indoor gaming complex, you’ll find 14 attractions, including four immersive simulator experiences, two escape rooms and the Topgolf Swing Suite – all of which are unique to Norwegian Prima. When it’s time to cool off, the Tidal Wave waterslide is another first for the brand, letting guests ride inner tubes to catch the surf and ride out the wave. Norwegian Viva, set to launch in 2023 as the second vessel in the Prima class, will also feature these exciting new high-tech attractions. The line’s Breakaway class – Norwegian Escape, Joy, Bliss and Encore – are also popular with families as these ships offer plenty of activities and attractions well suited for active teens. [Want to cruise with your family on Norwegian Cruise Line? See the top cruises on GoToSea, a service of U.S. News.] Disney Cruise Line (Courtesy of Disney Cruise Line) Disney Cruise Line features two cool spaces dedicated to teens and tweens, who can hang out on comfy couches, watch shows or movies on large screen televisions, and play video games. These hangouts, called Edge (for ages 11 to 14) and Vibe (ages 14 to 17), are available on all Disney ships. On Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream, the space at Vibe also features a private outdoor deck with chaise lounges, wading pools, foosball and more. While indoors, teenagers can order sodas and smoothies from the fountain bar, mingle with others their age, or just kick back and relax in individual nooks. There’s a dance club area for karaoke contests, talent shows and dance competitions. The trendy indoor/outdoor space – at almost 9,000 square feet – is accessible with a “teen-only” card. On the new Disney Wish ship, Vibe has a French twist inspired by a French artists loft with neon signs and funk pop art. For tweens sailing on Disney Fantasy or Dream, Edge is a bright, loft-style gathering spot – located in the funnel – that has individual computer stations for gaming and a massive video wall for screening television, movies and games. There’s also a lighted dance floor for dance parties and a photo booth with green-screen technology. Two nifty features of the space – and its location – are views of the pool decks below as well as three portholes that allow for glimpses of the riders on the water coaster, AquaDuck, as they zoom by. On the first night of the cruise, kids receive information on what activities and events will be available during their vacation so they can curate a personalized entertainment itinerary. Some fun options throughout the week may include “The Wild Side” (a teen-only excursion on the cruise line’s private island, Castaway Cay) and “Gotcha”: a game of elimination where one teen will become the ultimate victor. For a special treat – and a bit of pampering – don’t miss an afternoon at Chill Spa, located inside Senses Spa & Salon. Here, guests ages 13 to 17 can book indulgent specialty spa treatments like an Ice Cream Manicure and Pedicure, a Hot Chocolate Wrap or an organic Fabulously Fruity Facial. [Searching for a cruise with your family on Disney Cruise Line? See the top cruises on GoToSea, a service of U.S. News.] Adventures by Disney Adventures by Disney offers river and expedition cruises for the whole family; the itineraries span many choices and experiences for tweens and teens with a focus on culture, history, gastronomy and adventure. The river cruises are operated in partnership with AmaWaterways, while the expedition cruises are a collaboration with luxury French cruise line Ponant. If you’re sailing on the Adventures by Disney Rhine River Cruise itinerary, for example – and docked in Strasbourg, France, for the day – guests can choose between various exciting excursions. Teen-friendly options include a tour of the Black Forest, complete with a toboggan run and a visit to a woodworking museum, or zip lining through the Black Forest combined with a hike to the Triberg Waterfalls. In Melk, Austria, on the Danube itinerary, families can go for a bike ride along the Danube River, hike to the castle in Dürnstein or visit a family-run apricot farm. Another great feature of these cruises is that teens can opt to have dinner and evening get-togethers with same-age cruisers, so they don’t have to dine with their parents or younger siblings every night. Adventure Guides also curate special activities for teens like game shows and pool parties. In destinations like Antarctica, the Arctic and the Galápagos Islands, expert naturalists lead tours during these bucket list trips. You might even find a bit of Disney storytelling woven into the presentations by the Adventure Guides. Keep in mind if you have younger kids as well as teens that children need to be 5 or older to sail on the river cruises. For the Galápagos Islands expedition cruises, the minimum age for Junior Adventurers is 7, a...

GensoKishi Metaverse Price Prediction MV Token Pumping Time To Buy? Cryptonews
GensoKishi Metaverse Price Prediction – MV Token Pumping Time To Buy? – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/gensokishi-metaverse-price-prediction-mv-token-pumping-time-to-buy-cryptonews/ Disclaimer: The Industry Talk section features insights by crypto industry players and is not a part of the editorial content of Cryptonews.com. GensoKishi Metaverse (MV) token has pumped over a remarkable 27% in the last week and is now trading at $0.25. A recent bullish tweet from the @Bybit_Official exchange seems to have been the catalyst by announcing that GensoKish’s in-game stablecoin, ROND, has been listed as a trading pair (ROND/USDT).  This bullish news is also reflected when looking at the MV/USDT trading volume on the Bybit centralized exchange. On Bybit, Trading volume is now up to 54.24% which means Bybit is gathering the most liquidity and has market dominance for MV token following the recent tweet in comparison to other CEXs.  GensoKishi Metaverse Token Price Prediction From a technical analysis perspective, over the recent weeks MV token has printed bullish price action.  However, when zooming out on the price charts GensoKishi Metaverse token is still down by 84% from prices back in April 2021 when MV token traded at $1.60.  GensoKishi Metaverse token has a very long road to pave in order to achieve a full recovery in price.  Sometimes exchange listings can simply see performance similar to a ‘buy the rumor, sell the news’ event, meaning a transient surge in price before a potential correction or inception of a new downtrend. MV/USDT – 1 Hour Time Frame. The above chart displays the recent euphoric pump for GensoKishi metaverse token. Currently, the price action is at risk of printing a bearish reversal pattern known as a double top on the charts. Should the formation be complete and the neckline (support level) of $0.245 be broken, we could see negative price continuation down to the $0.231 support level. On the other hand, we could see this particular move invalidated if the bulls can gain enough momentum and potentially retest the $0.27 price level.  Coinmarketcap states that GensoKishi Metaverse (MV) token has a market capital of $429 million and is rank #212 versus other cryptocurrencies at present time.  There is not a great amount of supporting historical data for MV token, but with enough bullish momentum it seems that a market capital of $700 million could be recovered by later this year.  GensoKishi Metaverse (MV) Token Video Analysis For now, forecasting the price action of GensoKishi Metaverse Token seems merely speculative. Whilst I too believe the metaverse will have a large role in the future of blockchain, it is difficult to pinpoint the longevity of GensoKishi and whether it will survive through the remainder of the crypto winter.  Tamadoge a Superior Metaverse Token?  A few days ago a new exhilarating and immersive deflationary meme coin known as Tamadoge has landed on the OKX CEX/DEX and rallied up to $0.038 following a very successful presale which raised $19 million in just 6 weeks.  A few hours after the pump, Tamadoge retraced down towards $0.016, TAMA is now consolidating at a healthy looking $0.022 and could be preparing for a pump up towards $0.03.  Tamadoge is a meme coin which integrates NFTs and augmented reality (metaverse) creating a fun and unique play-to-earn coin.  A majority of early presale investors would still have an average unit price of below $0.02/TAMA, meaning they could still be in a profit of 10% or more – investors who entered during the BETA phase of the presale would be up even more.  The next major move for Tamadoge is another centralized exchange listing on the LBank platform. This could create another rally bringing the price of Tamadoge back above $0.03.  It is worth noting that users are eligible to claim $10 of free TAMA tokens by simply signing up to the OKX centralized exchange and then trading any value of TAMA tokens on the OKX CEX.  I speculate that Tamadoge has more potential than GensoKishi Metaverse token as the market capital is only $22.5 million meaning the upside could be much higher.  Incredibly, a $22.5 million market capital ranks Tamadoge as the #8th best meme coin in terms of valuation.  Make sure to secure your TAMA tokens before the LBank listing on the OKX exchange should you wish to potentially hold until further price targets are met.

Since fall 2019, 35 workers died in the U.S. in lawn mower roll-over incidents. Commercial riding mowers can weigh upwards of 1,500 lbs. “While our investigations of these recent tragedies in Missouri and Nebraska continues, they are harsh reminders of the dangers of operating riding mowers. Employers are responsible for training workers to recognize and avoid hazards, especially when it comes to mowing grass on slopes and in poor terrain,”  explained OSHA Regional Administrator Billie Kizer in Kansas City, Missouri. On Sept. 9, 2022, a worker doing lawn maintenance in Boys Town, Nebraska, died after a riding mower toppled over and pinned the victim underwater in a reservoir. Four days later, on Sept. 13, 2022, a mower overturned and crushed a worker in Butterfield, Missouri.   “Lawn mower injuries happen at many types of work sites – from office parks to golf courses and from highway medians to public parks – and, at times, workers are assigned lawn maintenance tasks only as needed, which can put workers less familiar with operating these machines safely at risk,” Kizer added. Riding mowers can overturn for a variety of reasons such as speed, slope of area being mowed, poor terrain conditions, wet surfaces and operating too closely to ponds and waterways. Roll-over prevention devices, used in conjunction with seatbelts, can help riders avoid tragedy if installed. Learn more about safety guidance for riding mowers. Employers can also use OSHA’s On-Site Consultation Program that offers no-cost and confidential occupational safety and health services, with priority given to high-hazard worksites. Programs are available in Midwest states including Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska.   Learn more about OSHA.

Tennessee Honored For Technology Innovation Tn.gov
Tennessee Honored For Technology, Innovation – Tn.gov https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/tennessee-honored-for-technology-innovation-tn-gov/ NASHVILLE – Tennessee’s technology solutions and innovation are cited today in honors from the Center for Digital States, which works to help modernize and improve state and local governments. Tennessee received a grade of A-minus in the center’s 2022 Digital States Survey. The Strategic Technology Solutions division in the Department of Finance & Administration provides centralized technology services to state departments. “Governor Bill Lee’s focus on technology is clear in the companies we’ve worked to bring to the state, and in preparing the future workforce for tech jobs, so it’s only natural we’d want to excel in technology for serving Tennesseans,” F&A Commissioner Jim Bryson said. “I’m very proud to work with the leadership and employees at STS as they stretch to provide the best services and anticipate tomorrow’s tech needs.” The survey says a grade of A-minus reflects a state demonstrating “very strong innovation and high performing solutions with verifiable impact.” The ranking cited Tennessee’s excellent practices in all aspects of operations, governance and administration. Further, in the Center’s category awards, Tennessee received 2nd place for “exemplary work in Data Enablement which recognizes that the state’s data governance processes are established to ensure quality, privacy protection, and trusted data access to improve constituent outcomes.” The award will be presented at the Digital States Survey awards celebration October 9 in Louisville, Kentucky during the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) annual meeting. STS serves as the central information technology service bureau to state departments and commissions, providing planning, resources, execution and coordination in managing information systems needs. The Center for Digital States is part of the Center for Digital Government, a national research and advisory institute on information technology policies and best practices in state and local government. The Digital States Survey serves as a benchmarking tool for state leaders, assessing how states apply technologies to better serve constituents.

Solana NFT Game Star Atlas Launches Playable Demo On Epic Games Store Decrypt
Solana NFT Game Star Atlas Launches Playable Demo On Epic Games Store Decrypt
Solana NFT Game Star Atlas Launches Playable Demo On Epic Games Store – Decrypt https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/solana-nft-game-star-atlas-launches-playable-demo-on-epic-games-store-decrypt/ In brief Upcoming Solana-based game Star Atlas just released a playable demo via the Epic Games Store for NFT owners. Developer ATMTA also released a toolkit that lets other studios connect Unreal Engine 5-based games to the Solana blockchain. Star Atlas is arguably one of the most ambitious NFT-driven games on the horizon, although it could be years before the Solana-based outer space strategy game fully takes shape. Eager players won’t have to wait that long to get a small taste, however: a limited demo has just been released via the Epic Games Store. Launched today as part of a live-streamed event, Star Atlas: Showroom is a pre-alpha demo of the Unreal Engine 5 technology powering the game. It lets Star Atlas NFT owners explore a 3D environment and view the ships and vehicles in which they’ve invested. Star Atlas is currently only offering access to people who own the NFTs: they can earn an access key by owning a ship and joining one of Star Atlas’ in-game factions. Michael Wagner, CEO and co-founder of Star Atlas developer ATMTA, told Decrypt that the demo also features a single non-NFT ship to explore, and that some access codes will be given to select non-owners. Later this year, the Showroom demo will be expanded to include additional features, including multiplayer capabilities, chat functionality, and the ability for NFT holders to take their ships out for a flight. An NFT is a blockchain token that represents ownership of a unique item—in this case, digital spaceships and other vehicles that can be used in a video game. In addition to launching its own first playable taste of Star Atlas, the developer also today released a toolkit to make it easier for other developers to bring their own Unreal Engine 5-based games to the Solana blockchain. A screenshot from the Star Atlas: Showroom demo. Image: ATMTA The Foundation Software Development Kit (F-KIT) is an open-source SDK that lets Unreal Engine 5 developers integrate the Solana blockchain, letting users sign transactions to complete in-game actions. Unreal Engine hails from Fortnite creator Epic Games, and is widely used across the video game industry, as well as for TV shows and movies. Releasing the F-KIT as an open-source tool means that “mainstream studios,” as Wagner put it, “now have a faster path” to creating games on Solana. He said that other builders could also take the kit and extend it to other networks, such as Ethereum. For his team, however, it’s also a way to encourage others to “build experiences that extend the Star Atlas universe.” Star Atlas made a number of other announcements today, including updates to its governance structure via a DAO and path to full decentralization of the game’s economy and ecosystem, as well as an upcoming digital graphic novel that establishes the lore for the sci-fi game. Wagner explained that ATMTA is developing two different clients for Star Atlas: the glossier Unreal Engine 5 version that will be exclusively available through the Epic Games Store, and a simpler web-based WebGL version. All of the game functionality will be available through both versions, but the Epic Games Store version will require a gaming-capable PC to run. The Epic Games Store is a popular platform for PC games, with over 194 million users claimed as of the end of 2021. And unlike its chief rival, Steam, the Epic Games Store is OK with games that utilize NFTs and blockchains, so long as they follow the platform’s regulations. Just recently, Mythical Games launched the first NFT-based game on the platform: Blankos Block Party, a color online playground that the studio claims had more than 1 million total users before it hit the Epic Games Store. Another NFT-based game, Gala Games’ shooter GRIT, is also set to release via the same marketplace. The Star Atlas: Showroom demo is just a light taste of the future, complete game experience, which sounds like a much more robust affair than your average crypto game today. Major games take time to develop—and in this case, Wagner envisions another five or six years of development on Star Atlas. But the Showroom launch suggests the kind of incremental release schedule that ATMTA has in mind, Wagner said. The Showroom itself will gain more features by year’s end, and then by the end of 2023, the team plans to release a complete “vertical slice” of the game—that is, a fully functional (but limited) chunk of gameplay that shows what the full game should be like. “We still have a long road ahead,” he said. “But the idea is to continuously release these iterative features so that you’re constantly getting more engagement.” Stay on top of crypto news, get daily updates in your inbox.

Brett Favre Scandal: Hall Of Fame QB’s Foundation Funneled Large Sums To Southern Miss Athletics – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/brett-favre-scandal-hall-of-fame-qbs-foundation-funneled-large-sums-to-southern-miss-athletics-cbs-sports/ Legendary NFL quarterback and former Southern Miss star Brett Favre is under fire for the role that his charity played in funneling money to the University of Southern Mississippi Athletic Foundation from 2018 to 2020, according to tax records obtained by The Athletic and ESPN. During this time, Favre also reportedly tried to raise money for a new volleyball center at the university, where his daughter was a member of the team. Favre’s charity, Favre 4 Hope, was created to support charities that provide support to underserved and disabled children and breast cancer patients, according to its mission statement. However, the charity made three large donations to the USM Athletic Foundation totaling more than $130,000. Those sums were significantly more than donations made to other organizations.  Favre 4 Hope donated $60,000 to USM in 2018, $46,817 in 2019 and $26,175 in 2020. The largest donation it made to any other organization during that time period was an $11,000 sum to the Special Olympics of Mississippi in 2019. The highest donations made in 2018 and 2020 were $10,000 sums to multiple organizations. Records obtained by ESPN also show that the booster club of Favre’s daughter’s high school received funds from Favre 4 Hope in years prior to her enrollment at Southern Miss. Favre 4 Hope’s role is part of a much larger welfare scandal involving the misappropriation of roughly $77 million, making it the largest public corruption case in Mississippi history. Favre sent text messages to the director of a non-profit organization expressing concern regarding his name potentially getting out in public, according to Mississippi Today.  Charities like Favre 4 Hope have an ethical obligation to spend funds the way donors intended, Charity Watch executive director Laurie Styron told ESPN.  John Davis, former Executive Director of the Mississippi Department of Human Services, pled guilty in September to one count of conspiracy and one count of theft concerning programs receiving federal funds. Davis worked with four unnamed co-conspirators, two of which are executive directors of organizations, according to CBS News.  “MDHS provided federal funds to two nonprofit organizations and then directed the two nonprofit organizations to fraudulently award contracts to various entities and individuals for social services that were never provided,” the United States Department of Justice said in a release on Sept. 22.  Favre played quarterback at Southern Miss from 1987-90. He was drafted 33rd overall by the Atlanta Falcons in the 1991 NFL Draft and traded to the Green Bay Packers the following offseason. Favre starred for the Packers from 1992-2007, earning three straight MVP awards (1995-97) and winning Super Bowl XXXI. He joined the New York Jets in 2008 and finished his career with the Minnesota Vikings in 2009 and 2010. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016.

What Web3 And The Metaverse Mean For Brands And PR Pros – Rolling Stone https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/what-web3-and-the-metaverse-mean-for-brands-and-pr-pros-rolling-stone/ The developing metaverse has presented a unique opportunity for communications professionals. Agency owners and leadership teams must stay ahead of current marketing, media and tech trends to find the best ways to serve and satisfy clients. The developing metaverse has presented a unique opportunity for communications professionals, given that Web3 technology is still in its nascent stage. Although it’s a concept that’s been vaguely referenced and thrown about for some time, many of us first became acquainted with the term when Mark Zuckerberg, Meta CEO and founder, posted a letter on the company’s website. He wrote, “The defining quality of the metaverse will be a feeling of presence — like you are right there with another person or in another place.” This was a beautifully simplistic description of what is actually a very complex entity. In fact, the very nature and evolution of the metaverse depend on the interoperability of multiple technological entities, all of which have an unstable footing in the mind of common consumers. As PR professionals, we must understand what others cannot in order to properly communicate the implications of these technologies for our clients’ industries, as well as our own. Not to mention, there has been an incredible surge in the number of metaverse development companies in the U.S., so business opportunities will likely open up as PR agencies and professionals deepen their expertise in all things Web3. The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) notes, “While integrated marketing-communications continue to include paid, owned, earned, and shared channels, the metaverse will be the next step for all of them.” PR pros should think about preparing for the profound and complex effects the metaverse could have on media, brands and marketing, so they can advise their clients on and about emerging Web3 technologies.  What Is Web3 To truly understand the nature of Web3 and the metaverse, we should acknowledge its historical foundations. Web3 is built on a combination of concepts that were first introduced in the first two iterations of the internet: • Web1 was a low-bandwidth, highly decentralized infrastructure that resulted in a mostly community-governed system. It was static, simple and lacked interactive media and communication integrations.  • Web2 is dominated by centralized software services run by big enterprises and tech corporations, all of whom are in the business of collecting, generating and distributing incredible amounts of data. This is the version of the internet that made incredible things like streaming, social media and video calls possible, but most of the value from this period was allocated to those big tech companies at the cost of the consumer’s personal data. The Rolling Stone Culture Council is an invitation-only community for Influencers, Innovators and Creatives. Do I qualify? • Web3 is a decentralized and more democratic online structure that combines the community-governed essence of Web1 with the limitless functionality and interoperability of Web2. Packy McCormick, an American investor who helped bring attention to the term Web3, says it’s “the internet owned by the builders and users, orchestrated with tokens.” What It Means For Brands And Businesses  The advent of Web3 technology brings with it a myriad of opportunities for brands and businesses. 2D Web2 shopping experiences could be transformed into interactive VR adventures; NFTs could change the way we experience or buy art and entertainment; blockchain-built currencies could revolutionize how people spend and save their money. Brands can exploit what these new infrastructures have to offer in so many different ways, but they will need to strategize and align their business development goals to keep up with the times.  In fact, more and more companies are starting to offer metaverse integration services for brands and businesses. These are teams that can help bridge the gap between Web2 and Web3 for companies that don’t have the capacity to build those infrastructures out themselves. Whether it be in decentralized finance, virtual reality, digital identity or non-fungible token and digital asset creation, the opportunities for new and existing brands could be endless. PR professionals will likely need to know how to help guide these delicate transitions. Being prepared for the next iteration of the internet cannot mean the alienation of consumers who have grown accustomed to Web2, but it must entail some sort of progress toward the strategic integration of Web3 where it makes sense. Legacy brands and businesses will not want or need to change their core services but instead look ahead at the additional, logical opportunities the metaverse could offer down the road. That being said, changes should always be carefully communicated to internal and external stakeholders.  What It Means For PR While helping clients gain the media coverage their business merits is a critical part of the PR process, our most important contacts remain the journalists, influencers and media experts whom we work with on a regular basis. We need to consider how these developing technologies might affect the way they do their jobs as well. Think about how Web2 and social media have helped redefine the media landscape — Web3 is primed to do the same thing. The metaverse presents itself with yet another way to create, consume and experience content, and the media industry is sure to be one of the first industries to embrace it.  Eventually, we might need to prepare for virtual press conferences and VR events in the metaverse. For now, however, PR agencies and professionals should focus on bridging the knowledge gap between Web3 companies and their users. Additionally, companies with a foot in the metaverse will likely need continued attention in order to keep up with the innovation required by this new iteration of the internet. PR pros should know how to tailor a business’ communications strategy to entice investors interested in forward-thinking Web3 companies.  The next few years could see a consistent increase in Web3 companies entering the market. These up-and-coming businesses will need experienced, knowledgeable and tech-savvy PR professionals who can help them seamlessly communicate their vision for the future to their audiences.

Tamadoge Price – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/tamadoge-price-cryptonews/ The play to earn gaming sensation Tamadoge is taking the cryptocurrency community by storm with a series of product announcements and updates that have enticed their community.  Tamadoge has now listed on OKX and OKX Dex  After having completed its presale last week, during which the company managed to raise an impressive $19m, the team at Tamadoge issued instructions to the community as to how they ought to claim their tokens, and then promptly listed TAMA on a series of exchanges.  TAMA is now listed on OKX, which is one of the largest and most well-respected exchanges in the entire cryptocurrency industry and handles over $2 billion a day in volume.   Traders will want to make use of OKX’s reputation and trading platform to trade TAMA in a frictionless manager, and many will appreciate the use of the order-book based exchange rather than the decentralised alternative. The Tamadoge ecosystem will be replete with utility  Meme coins and meme tokens over the past few years have thrived, with DOGE and SHIB being some of the top performers during the last bull market, and DOGE one of the few assets that made another ATH against BTC when compared with the last bull market.  Fortunately, Tamadoge is not just a meme token, since the team are also building an entire P2E gaming ecosystem known as the Tamaverse.  Moreover, later in 2023 the team are to be unveiling progress that they have been with integrating one’s personal Tama with the world of artificial reality.  As per the white paper, this will allow people to artificially superimpose their Tamas on their surroundings to play with them, in a manner not dissimilar from Pokémon Go! The Tamadoge price has plenty of room to grow  With a circulating supply market cap of $22m, Tamadoge has huge potential to grow over the coming months and years.  When one compares Tama’s current price with meme token hegemons such as SHIB, or when one compares the current price of TAMA with the giants of the play to earn industry, it becomes clear that there is plenty of room for the project to grow.  One would expect most of the growth to come once the Tamadoge team begin to release some of their flagship products.  The next product that the community is eagerly waiting for in anticipation is the Tamadoge Pet Store, which will sell a variety of different NFTs and in-game items that the community can use within the Tamaverse.

DLSS 3 Could Boost Your Gaming Performance By Up To 5x – Digital Trends https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/dlss-3-could-boost-your-gaming-performance-by-up-to-5x-digital-trends/ Nvidia’s upcoming DLSS 3 was just tested in several gaming scenarios, and the results are nothing short of impressive. DLSS 3 boosted the frame rates significantly, sometimes by up to five times, even in CPU-bound games. So far, it really does seem like DLSS 3 is living up to Nvidia’s previews of it. Nvidia DLSS 3 on RTX 4090 – Exclusive First Look – 4K 120FPS and Beyond With around two weeks left until the launch of Nvidia’s RTX 4090, the first reviews and tests are starting to pour in. Digital Foundry was able to get an RTX 4090 ahead of time and decided to put it through the wringer in a number of DLSS 3-oriented tests. The tests were carried out in three games: Cyberpunk 2077, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and Portal RTX. All three of these titles are early adopters of DLSS 3, and Digital Foundry was given preview builds to work with during the tests. Although the publication was unable to share the exact frames per second (fps) figures, it was allowed to give us a sneak peek at the performance multipliers. As a refresher, DLSS 3 is the latest iteration of Nvidia’s upscaling technology, and it differs from the previous version by adding A.I. frame generation. This can have an impact on latency, which is why Nvidia added Reflex as a tool made to combat that. Nvidia Reflex is meant to nullify the latency increase caused by frame generation and perhaps even knock it down a little lower, too. The description of the technology pretty much sums up Digital Foundry’s experience with it. For starters, games that support DLSS 3, such as Marvel’s Spider-Man, have an added option in the settings that lets you activate or deactivate frame generation. Toggling it on automatically enables Nvidia Reflex. As far as performance goes, the RTX 4090 did a great job — as expected. The card is far more powerful than what most modern titles require, but Spider-Man and Cyberpunk 2077 are both demanding, and yet, the games were running on max settings on a 4K 120Hz screen without a hitch. This was with DLSS 3 enabled. The games were tested with DLSS 3, DLSS 2, and at native 4K resolution. In Portal RTX, enabling DLSS 2 boosted the performance by 329%, but DLSS 3 took that several steps further all the way up to 526% of the native (hidden) fps. Digital Foundry Spider-Man also showed some gains: DLSS 2 performance was at 136%, and DLSS 3 with frame generation — 219%. It’s worth noting that the latency went up, too, but not so much that it would affect anything in a game such as this. Native latency was at 36ms; it then went down to 23ms with DLSS 2 but went back up to 38ms with frame generation in DLSS 3. Cyberpunk 2077 showed similar, but better, results. With DLSS 2, it hit 258% in performance at 31 ms (versus 62ms at native 4K), but with DLSS 3, the performance jumps to 399% and 54ms. Now, DLSS 3 is not perfect. Digital Foundry mentions that fast motion, especially close to the camera, can cause artefacts, and HUD elements have their issues too. However, for the most part, it seems like Nvidia did a good job with it. DLSS 3 will launch on October 12 when Nvidia’s new flagship, RTX 4090, hits the shelves. Editors’ Recommendations Nvidia addresses the rumors about the RTX 40 GPUs’ power consumption Three ultra-rare RTX 4090 GPUs are hidden in Cyberpunk 2077 Developer says it can turn your AMD 6800 XT into an Nvidia 3090 Ti EVGA’s feud with Nvidia gives new options to GPU makers Nvidia’s DLSS 3 could make the monstrous RTX 4090 a little less power hungry
