Steve Hanke Says The Chance Of A U.S. Recession Just Shot Up To 80% CNBC
Steve Hanke Says The Chance Of A U.S. Recession Just Shot Up To 80% – CNBC https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/steve-hanke-says-the-chance-of-a-u-s-recession-just-shot-up-to-80-cnbc/
There’s an 80% chance of the U.S. falling into a recession — much higher than previously predicted, according to Steve Hanke, a professor of applied economics at Johns Hopkins University.
According to CNBC’s September Fed survey of economists, fund managers and strategists, those surveyed said there’s a 52% chance that U.S. could enter into recession over the next 12 months.
“The probability of recession, I think it’s much higher than 50% — I think it’s about 80%. Maybe even higher than 80%,” Hanke told CNBC’s “Street Signs Asia” on Friday.
“If they continue the quantitative tightening and move that growth rate and M2 (money supply) into negative territory, it’ll be severe.”
They have really been searching for inflation and the causes of inflation in all the wrong places. They’re looking at everything under the sun, but the money supply.
Steve Hanke
Professor of applied economics, Johns Hopkins University.
Hanke was critical, and has been in the past, of the Federal Reserve’s failure to manage inflation through keeping an eye on the large supply of money sloshing around in the U.S. economy.
“They have really been searching for inflation and the causes of inflation in all the wrong places. They’re looking at everything under the sun, but the money supply,” Hanke said.
“And in fact, they’ve doubled and tripled down on the argument that money has no relationship to economic activity or not a reliable relationship to economic activity and inflation.”

He blamed the U.S. central bank for rising inflation.
“The reason for that is because the Fed exploded the money supply, starting early 2020 at an unprecedented rate and they don’t want this length to be visible between the money supply and inflation.”
“Because if it is, the noose around their neck, and that’s the real problem.”
An increase in money supply drives up prices as consumers are willing to pay more for goods.
Classical economics, as put forward by Milton Friedman and others, have pointed to money supply as the culprit for out-of-control inflation, Hanke added.
The Fed flooded the U.S. economy with large amounts of stimulus and liquidity to keep it afloat during the pandemic, but did not focus on carefully reducing that money supply over time, the professor said.
The M2 supply of money, a broad measure of money supply which includes cash and deposits, has been growing by double digits in the past three years.
Now the growth of M2 money supply is slowing too quickly and that could send the economy into a recession, Hanke warned.
“They are not addressing it correctly,” he said. “In the five months, we’ve seen broad money major in the United States flatline. It’s not growing at all.
Stock picks and investing trends from CNBC Pro:
“And now they’re going to introduce quantitative tightening and what that’s going to do that will drive the money supply down, that will drive it down into negative territory if they keep this up.”
Hanke said the right economic move would be to keep money supply growing at a “golden growth rate” of 5% to 6% to get inflation to about 2%.
“Now it’s zero. And it will probably go negative,” the professor said. “And that’s that’s why we will see a recession in 2023.”

UC Riverside engineers are developing low-cost, robotic “clothing” to help children with cerebral palsy gain control over their arm movements.

Cerebral palsy is the most common cause of serious physical disability in childhood, and the devices envisioned for this project are meant to offer long-term daily assistance for those living with it.
However, traditional robots are rigid and not comfortable on the human body. Enabled by a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation, this project is taking the novel approach of building devices from soft textiles, which will also facilitate more natural limb functioning.
“Hard materials don’t interact well with humans,” said Jonathan Realmuto, UCR assistant professor of mechanical engineering and project lead. “What we’re going for by using materials like nylon and elastic are essentially robotic garments.”
These garments will contain sealed, airtight regions that can inflate, making them temporarily rigid, and providing the force for movement.
“Let’s say you want to flex the elbow for a bicep curl. We can inject air into specially designed bladders embedded in the fabric that would propel the arm forward,” Realmuto said.
The project will focus not only on constructing the robot, but also on developing the algorithms that teach the machine to predict movements the wearer wants to execute.

“One of the critical challenges in providing movements assistance is interpreting a person’s intention. We want a “volitional controller,” so the robot behaves in terms of what the human wants to do,” Realmuto said. The project team also includes UCR mechanical engineering assistant professor Jun Sheng.
One aspect of such a controller is using a variety of small sensors on the sleeves to detect small voltages generated by muscles when they contract. These sensors will feed the voltage data into an algorithm that will be trained to extract the wearer’s intention from them.
Using widely available textiles, rather than traditional, rigid materials will likely keep the cost of the sleeves low. In addition, the team intends to minimize the use of sophisticated electronics, which will also help reduce overall costs for patients.
This project is being conducted in partnership with Children’s Hospital of Orange County, where patients from a pediatric movement disorder clinic will help test and refine the prototypes.

Additionally, the research team will hold annual meetings at the hospital for each of the four years of the project. These meetings will include the patients and their families, as well as occupational therapists, and elicit their feedback on the technology as it develops.
“By centering stakeholders in our design process, we hope to develop a product that truly works for them,” Realmuto said.
The development team views this work as enhancing independence not only for the pediatric patients themselves, but also for entire communities.
“If we can help kids brush their own teeth, pour water or open doors, actions that others take for granted, it’s a huge win for them,” Realmuto said. “But it’s also a win for their families and caretakers.”
Although this project is focused on children with movement disorders, the technology can eventually be used for other applications and populations, including geriatric patients and other adults with movement issues.
“Our technology is universal,” Realmuto said.

For The Republic
SEYMOUR — After Tuesday’s three-set win over Crothersville, Trinity Lutheran head coach Faith Wilder-Newland wasn’t pleased with her team’s focus heading into Thursday’s match.
On Thursday night inside Bollinger Athletic Complex against Hauser, the Cougar coach saw a much more energized group, which resulted in a 25-17, 25-14, 25-14 victory over the Jets.
“A lot better focus and serving,” Wilder-Newland said. “We missed twelve serves on Tuesday, but we came out and really served well tonight. We only missed four serves on the whole night.”
What was Class A No. 2 Trinity’s strength was also Hauser’s weakness on Thursday. Jets head coach Jeff Case pinpointed serve-receive as a reason why his team struggled.
“We needed to have serve-receive better,” Case said. “We needed to put pressure to get them out of their offense. They have a really good offense, good hitters and if you’re not putting pressure on them and being aggressive, they’re going to tee off on you. We‘ve got to tighten up and improve on that.”
The first set was tight between both teams to start. Trinity had the advantage out of the gate, but a 4-0 Hauser run gave the Jets an 8-7 lead, and Wilder-Newland called timeout.
Her team responded from there. The Cougars gained a 16-14 advantage, extended that to 22-17 before Carson Bowling got a kill to end the set 25-17. Bowling was honored before the match for picking up her 500th career kill in Trinity’s last outing.
In the second set, it was Hauser that got off to a good start. Kayden Miller served an ace that gave the Jets a 7-2 lead.
But Trinity battled back. Trailing 11-8, the Cougars went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-11 lead, and Case called timeout.
Trinity continued to roll from there, winning the set 25-14 after Ava Blomenburg sent an attack across the net and Hauser had a passing error.
“We were not passing the ball very well,” Wilder-Newland said on her team’s slow start in the second set. “We had a couple communication errors, so once we got past that and just started chipping away, it was much better.”
As for the Jets, Case said, “We lost focus a bit in the second set. We just got down our ourselves.”
As the third set was tied at eight, Trinity used a 6-0 run behind the serving of Bailey Tabeling and Lila Hunter to gain the advantage in the set.
An ace from Drew Hubbard ended the third set 25-14 to complete the sweep for the Cougars.
“We wanted to be able to get some of the younger kids in and get them experience,” Wilder-Newland said. “(Freshmen) Maddie Adams Lila Hunter came in and both served well.”
With the win, Trinity improved to 15-5.
Leading the Cougars were Tabeling with 18 kills, Bowling added 13 and Hubbard had six. Bowling had three blocks while Tabeling and Laina Klinge each had two. Laura Roeder and Adams both served two aces, and Addison Darlage recorded 36 assists.
Hauser is now 16-7. Miller led the Jets with two aces, while Charlie Clark and Adrianna Musillami each had one ace. Kenze Bostic pounded 11 kills, Clark added six and Aniston Bostic had five. Clark, Kyra Meister and Mattie Foster all notched 10 digs, and Musillami had 17 assists.
“Kenze was doing a really good job,” Case said. “Adrianna set well. We made some good defensive digs. Maddie had some good digs. We just have to be more consistent.”
Next up for both teams will be home tournaments on Saturday.
The Cougars will play Mitchell and New Washington at home, while Hauser will host the Heritage Days Classic against Oldenburg Academy, Franklin County and Columbus North.
“It can help you get ready for postseason play. It’s good for us,” Case said on Saturday’s classic. “We’ll try to take something positive out of this as hard as that may be.”

Revamped Detroit Auto Show Now Also Features New Flying Tech – 69News WFMZ-TV https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/revamped-detroit-auto-show-now-also-features-new-flying-tech-69news-wfmz-tv/
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit auto show has returned after a three-year absence with a roar. And a soar.
Visitors to the prestigious North American International Auto Show, which kicked off last week, can lay eyes on the latest offerings from some of the world’s biggest automakers, as they’ve been able to in years past.
But this time around, they also can check out what organizers are calling “the show above the show.”
The Air Mobility Experience features displays and demonstrations from six air mobility innovators — representing five countries — that include electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, a hoverbike, a hoverboard and a jet suit.
“Feels like the future,” said John George, chief creative officer of the Air Mobility Experience. “We’ve all asked this question — I know I have, since I was a kid: ‘When was that future going to arrive?’”
“And the answer is: ‘Now,’” he said.
Show-goers can see some air mobility conveyances on display on the show floor, while others have been visible in the skies above the city.
That includes the ICON A5, a two-seat, amphibious, light-sport aircraft with retractable wings that enable owners to haul it in a trailer behind a truck, SUV or other vehicle.
Pilots from Vacaville, California-based ICON Aircraft provided demonstration flights along the Detroit River that featured landings on the waterway that separates Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.
“The reaction (of passengers) landing on the water is always my favorite,” said Suzanne Clavette, ICON’s marketing manager and a pilot who flew some of the A5 demo flights that passed by the downtown Huntington Place convention center that hosts the auto show.
NAIAS last was held in January 2019. It returned last week on a smaller scale with fewer new model debuts and journalists, and less-glitzy displays.
But hosting the show in September has allowed carmakers — including Ford Motor Co., which debuted the new Mustang at downtown’s Hart Plaza — and the air mobility companies to make use of the great outdoors.
“Honestly, I think this is the future of shows. It’s no longer just an auto show. It’s a mobility show, which gives you a glimpse of all of those vehicle types, including the ones that fly,” George said.
The show runs through Sunday.

Golden Bears Work To Keep Winning | News, Sports, Jobs – The Review https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/golden-bears-work-to-keep-winning-news-sports-jobs-the-review/
CALCUTTA — The Oak Glen football team is looking to make it two wins in a row this week against rival Beaver Local.
The Golden Bears picked up their first win of the season when Oak Glen knocked off previously-unbeaten Toronto, 25-8, at Clarke Hinkle Field.
“It was a big win,” Oak Glen coach Doug Taylor said. “It is always nice to get your first win.
“By no means did we play a perfect game. We have some things to work on offense. We played well enough to come out of Toronto with a win.”
The Golden Bears (1-3) and Beavers (3-2) will meet at 7 p.m. today at Pastore Field.
“Beaver Local, it is like going from the frying pan and into the fire,” Taylor said. “They are loaded. They are loaded with athletes and speed. They like to play in space.
“They are 3-2, but they have lost to two really good football teams in Indian Valley and Salem. Their record definitely is not indicative of the team they are. They are very good.”
The Beavers lost their first two games as Indian Valley defeated Beaver Local, 41-20, and Salem came away with a 40-27 victory in week 2.
Since then, the Beavers have won three straight games. Beaver Local has defeated Linden McKinley, 42-14, East Liverpool, 65-0, and Keyser, 31-10.
“They want to get the ball to their playmakers,” Taylor said. “They do that in a number of different ways. They like to get out onto the perimeter.
“Defensively, we are going to have to tackle well in space. We are going to get as many guys as we can to the football.”
After allowing 81 points in its first two games, Beaver Local has played better defensively in the last three weeks as the Beavers have only given up 24 points in their three wins.
“Defensively, they are a normal Beaver Local team,” Taylor said. “They are aggressive. They are good up front.
“We are going to have to be gap sound. We are going to have to be better at what we do. I’m talking about execution. There are so many players where if we get a block a 3-yard run could turn into a 10-yard run or a 5-yard run could turn into a 15-yard run.
“We are going to have to get better. We are going to have to do a good job of executing. We are going to have to get off blocks and hold our blocks.”
The Golden Bears are going to have to be able to sustain drives and come away with points in order to beat the Beavers.
“We are going to have to control the ball,” Taylor said. “We are going to have to hit the play-action pass when we have it set up. We are going to have to have long drives, and we are going to have to control the clock.”
The boys from Columbiana County have the advantage in the size department.
“Size-wise, we are a small team, so everyone we play is going to be bigger than us,” Taylor said. “The biggest thing with them is just their speed. They are so fast. There is a high school coach around here who said, ‘You either have speed, or you are chasing speed.’ That is our issue.”
The Bears are going to the game dealing with some injuries.
“We have some guys nicked up,” Taylor said. “We are going to have to look at giving guys some time off. We have to get healthy. This is the halfway point of our season, and if we want to have success in the second half we are going to have to keep guys healthy. You may see guys only playing one side of the ball this week. We want to give guys a break so they can continue to heal up.”
Former Edison head coach Mike McKenzie is the head coach of the Beavers.
Beaver Local enters this week’s game in seventh place in the Ohio Division IV Region 13 rankings.

Chinese Social Metaverse Products Struggle With Poor User Experience Pandaily
Chinese Social Metaverse Products Struggle With Poor User Experience – Pandaily https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/chinese-social-metaverse-products-struggle-with-poor-user-experience-pandaily/
Metaverse-based social products are rapidly emerging as the new trendy focus for the Chinese tech world. According to Qimai Data, about 228 apps in China have added “metaverse” to their descriptions so far, 169 of which claim to be metaverse social apps, but there are significant doubts within the market.
Chinese social media platform developer Inkeverse recently launched a metaverse social product called The Place for overseas markets. Bianfeng Network, a subsidiary of Zhejiang Daily Digital Culture, has also taken a stake in a metaverse social company. Social platform Soul regarded “metaverse” as a keyword during promotional activities as early as 2021. TikTok owner ByteDance also launched Party Island, its first social product in the metaverse.
Internet giants are using their investments to gain profits in the field. Following its investment in metaverse social platform Imvu last year, NetEase invested in metaverse UGC platform BUD in May this year. In June, Bytedance acquired PoliQ which launched a social entertainment app called Vyou in late 2020, allowing users to dress up their virtual images.
Although there are many new metaverse social products in China, doubts have emerged and none of them have yet become a hit.
For example, Proximai, a metaverse social product eyeing Meta as its rival, claims that every player has his or her own digital identity. They can not only experience and create games, but also convert game items and coins on the platform with real money.
However, the product has not matured as expected. Feedback from users shows that there are only several social scenes to choose from. When it comes to creating virtual image, face shapes, facial features and hair styling are impossible to change. Due to poor user interaction, the app has been stopped downloads.
According to a report by Cailian Press, industry analysts have said that the main reasons behind the poor user experience include immature 3D real-time rendering technology and multi-modal interaction technology, expensive AV/VR devices, backward application scenarios and ecosystem construction.
Luo Qi, a senior researcher at OKX, believes that Chinese firms are actually making social products by adding more virtual experiences for users.

“The core of the metaverse is computing power,” said Wang Yingbo, a doctor of economics at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. “Computing power needs to be increased by at least 1,000 times to simulate the real social environment. The conditions for social interaction in the metaverse are not yet fully mature, but it is indeed a general direction of development.”

Indonesia To Tighten Crypto Regulation With Stricter Rules For Exchanges – Regulation Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/indonesia-to-tighten-crypto-regulation-with-stricter-rules-for-exchanges-regulation-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/
Indonesia is preparing to issue new rules to tighten the regulation of crypto exchanges. Under revised regulatory framework, two-thirds of crypto exchange directors must be Indonesian citizens residing in the country.
Indonesia Plans to Tighten Crypto Regulation
Indonesia is preparing to issue new rules to tighten the regulation of crypto exchanges, officials from the country’s Minister of Trade and the Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency (Bappebti) said Tuesday at a parliamentary hearing in Jakarta.
One of the new rules requires two-thirds of directors of crypto exchanges to be Indonesian citizens residing in the country. Didid Noordiatmoko, acting head of Bappebti, told parliament:
That way, at least we can prevent the top management from fleeing the country if any problem arises.
The new measure followed the financial trouble faced by Southeast Asia-focused crypto exchange Zipmex, which had to halt withdrawals.
Crypto exchanges will also be required to use a third party to store client funds. They will additionally be prohibited from re-investing stored crypto assets.
Deputy Minister of Trade Jerry Sambuaga told reporters after the parliamentary hearing:
We don’t want to give permits (to exchanges) carelessly, so only for those that meet the requirements and are credible.
He noted without giving a specific timeframe that Bappebti will issue the new rules soon.
Sambuaga also confirmed that the Indonesian government is still planning to launch a crypto asset bourse this year. The bourse launch has been delayed several times.
Indonesia allows the trading of crypto assets as commodities but does not recognize crypto as a payment instrument. In April, the Indonesian Directorate General of Taxes said it had set both income tax (PPh) on capital gains from crypto investments and value-added tax (VAT) on crypto purchases at 0.1%.
Crypto transactions in Indonesia increased 1,224% to 859.4 trillion rupiahs ($57.5 billion) in 2021 from 64.9 trillion rupiahs in 2020, according to Bappebti. In the first six months of this year, there were 15.1 million crypto users in Indonesia, transacting cryptocurrencies worth 212 trillion rupiahs.
What do you think about Indonesia’s new requirements for crypto exchanges? Let us know in the comments section below.

Overhaul Coming For U.S. Medicare System – WTOC https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/overhaul-coming-for-u-s-medicare-system-wtoc/
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – The Inflation Reduction Act is a wide sweeping law, but it will make very specific changes to the U.S. Medicare system over the next several years.
The Better Medicare Alliance said one of the most important changes is capping out-of-pocket spending on prescription drugs at $2,000.
“Many of these Medicare beneficiaries take several drugs for different complex conditions,” Better Medicare Alliance Vice President of Policy and Research Greg Gierer said. “They could spend $4,000, $5,000, potentially unlimited amounts every year.
Changes to Medicare also include a price cap on insulin costs and making certain vaccines free.
AARP said that is especially useful for older citizens.
“One example is the shingles vaccine, which older Americans need, and those can cost $300 a shot,” AARP Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Bill Sweeny said. “So starting in January, those are going to be free, and that’s going to be great news for older Americans in this country.
Beginning in 2026 the government will begin negotiating drug price points for certain drugs covered by Medicare, which the Better Medicare Alliance says will save the taxpayer dollars.
“Estimates are that those provisions in total could reduce federal spending by $300 billion over a ten-year period, so very significant savings there,” Gierer said.
Medicare recipients do not need to make any changes to receive the new benefits.
They will phase in automatically in the next few years.

Revamped Detroit Auto Show Now Also Features New Flying Tech – The Associated Press https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/revamped-detroit-auto-show-now-also-features-new-flying-tech-the-associated-press/

The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Thursday the identity of a man whose body was found Aug. 6 in his Vancouver home as James Zephyrus Smith.
On Sept. 16, the medical examiner’s office asked for the public’s help in identifying the remains they believed belonged to Smith, 68, formerly known as Joseph G. Quagliani.
The Humane Society for Southwest Washington, where Smith volunteered, provided information to investigators that helped them track down dental offices with Smith’s records. Dental staff provided the records to help confirm his identity, the medical examiner’s office said.
Determinations for his cause and manner of death are still pending.

Family trips can be complicated. Here’s a review of six products to help relieve some of the stress associated with traveling with children. (NicoElNino, Shutterstock)
Estimated read time: 4-5 minutes
SALT LAKE CITY — Traveling with the family is a great way to create lasting memories, but it always brings its own quirks and challenges. In most cases, those factors are only exacerbated when one of your kids is a baby or toddler.
As my wife often says: “It’s not a vacation … it’s a family trip.”
This review looks at six products that might be helpful on your next family trip. From electronic devices to storage containers, they offer convenience that can hopefully relieve a little of the stress and complexity that come when traveling with the whole crew.
Etekcity Luggage Scale
GRADE: A
PRICE: $10

Most of us have tried the old “stand on the bathroom scale holding your luggage” trick to weigh our bags before a flight. Overweight fees can really add up, after all, so you’ve got to make sure ahead of time that you’re not going to incur the wrath of the airlines.
But what happens when there isn’t a bathroom scale handy, or you’re worried you’ll do the math wrong? This handy scale from Etekcity saves the day. It’s compact, lightweight, accommodates up to 110 pounds, and can toggle between pounds and kilograms for international travel.
Collapsible Travel-size Bottles
GRADE: A
PRICE: $5

There are lots of cheap options out there when it comes to travel-sized containers. What makes these bottles special is that they’re collapsible and have a leakproof design. Because they’re made of silicone, they’re flexible and can survive accidental drops. They’re TSA-approved and can expand in size from 42 milliliters to 88 milliliters.
NOTE: Even though these bottles are supposed to be leakproof, you should always keep them in a resealable plastic bag just in case. Accidents can always happen.
Portable Sound Machine
GRADE: A-
PRICE: $24

White noise is a precious commodity on a trip. You can use it to help your baby nap better on road trips, and it can be a game-changer when it comes to the whole family’s ability to sleep in a crowded hotel room.
This Sleep & Soother, made by Baby Brezza, is one of the best on the market, with 18 different sound options. Additional features include a built-in nightlight with adjustable brightness and timer settings for the sounds and light. You can power it with AAA batteries or simply with the USB cord.
LEVEL8 Textured Carry-On 20-inch
GRADE: A
PRICE: $156
LEVEL8 textured carry-on 20-inch rolling suitcase. (Photo: LEVEL8)
Traversing an airport with your family’s belongings can be a frantic and miserable experience, but I’ve found that a smooth-rolling and non-tipping bag can go a long way toward making it easier. This carry-on luggage from LEVEL8 fits the bill, as it has four durable 360-degree spinner wheels with an anti-shock design. Seriously, this thing practically glides along like a hoverboard.
Beyond its great mobility, this luggage provides excellent protection for your items with its polycarbonate hard shell. It also comes with an integrated, TSA-approved combination lock, so nobody can go snooping through your belongings. And the telescoping handle extends higher than any I’ve ever seen, which is really appreciated by us tall folks.
DoAce C11 2000W Travel Voltage Converter
GRADE: A-
PRICE: $40

This versatile unit from DoAce is ideal for international travel where you’ll need to adapt to another country’s socket configuration and voltage. Anyone who has ever struggled to charge their phone while abroad or has fried their hair dryer in a 220-volt outlet can attest that such a device is often worth its weight in gold.
The kit comes with three different adaptors and built-in surge protection, so you’ll be covered on most of your travels. Additionally, the device has USB ports to that it’s easier to power your various electronics.
Joolz Hub+
GRADE: A
PRICE: Varies by retailer
Joolz Hub+ lightweight stroller in navy blue. (Photo: Joolz)
The Joolz Hub+ is among the best compact strollers available because it combines two of the most important features for a family on the move: mobility and comfort.
First up, the design is lightweight and stable, which means you can easily steer it with one hand. But it also has a narrow wheelbase that’s ideal for public transportation and navigating tight aisles in stores. And once you’ve folded the stroller up, you can simply tote it around with the included carry strap.
As for the children who will actually be riding in the stroller, the Joolz Hub+ has an incredibly comfy seat. When they’re dozing, it’s easy to recline and there’s also an adjustable footrest. And the four-wheel suspension makes for one of the smoothest rides out there.
A couple other features that deserve a mention are the large underseat storage basket and the integrated LED lights in the front and rear for added safety after dark.

Senior Living: Seven Tips To Keep Loneliness Away UT Physicians
Senior Living: Seven Tips To Keep Loneliness Away – UT Physicians https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/senior-living-seven-tips-to-keep-loneliness-away-ut-physicians/
Loneliness can be bad for your health — really bad.
According to the National Institute of Aging, severe loneliness can lead to poor mental and physical health. Side effects can include high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, weakened immunity, anxiety, depression, cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s disease, and even death.
Faith Atai, MD
Though loneliness can affect anyone, senior citizens are especially susceptible for a number of reasons, according to Faith D. Atai, MD, geriatrician with UT Physicians Center for Healthy Aging – Bellaire Station.
“As people get older, things change. Their children grow up and move away. They retire or lose their jobs. A significant other passes away,” Atai said. “If they get to the point where they can no longer live independently, the problem becomes worse because they can no longer leave their home as freely as they once did.”
Unfortunately, prolonged loneliness can negatively affect the mind and body.
“Loneliness can lead to depression,” said Atai, associate professor of geriatric and palliative medicine with McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, “and if you are not mentally healthy, you are not healthy as a whole person.”
In fact, many health care workers and care givers noticed a significant decline in the health of seniors who were isolated and lonely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“During COVID, some seniors stopped eating because their family members weren’t allowed to visit them in the nursing home or allowed to feed them. Some started to lose their conversational skills; many suffered more memory loss. Overall, their health and abilities declined,” she said. “On the upside, some seniors had their family members more available because they were working from home, and they showed stable or even improved health.”
The pandemic proved what many health care professionals already knew.
“People need people. The stimulation we receive from socialization and relationships improves our overall health and quality of life,” Atai said.
Though life changes can create risk factors for loneliness, there are still many things seniors can do to push it away. In recognition of Healthy Aging Month, the doctor offers tips to help seniors continue living fuller, happier lives.
Go out on dates
Schedule weekly and/or monthly dates with friends. Whether it is for lunch, gin rummy, golf, or bingo, a planned activity offers an opportunity to leave the home and have fun with others. Keep a set date so friends can keep a routine or pattern and also have something to look forward to.
“We’re social creatures. We need to interact with others,” Atai said. “Don’t let COVID stop you. Get vaccinated, wear a mask, and social distance. If you stay permanently locked down, then the virus has already affected you.”
Join a team
Join a civic club or service organization; consider joining a place of worship. Participate in a group that expects steady attendance and promotes charitable work. Committing to a meaningful activity is a way to stay involved in the community and build a support system.
“It’s good to continue working even after you retire to remain part of society. Joining a group establishes a routine and gives your day more purpose,” Atai said. “It’s also a good way to make new friends.”
Become a VIP
Volunteer with a nonprofit. Giving back time and energy on a consistent basis is another way to stay connected in the community and feel fulfilled. Serving others in need helps foster a personal sense of gratitude and satisfaction.
“Volunteering is a great way for seniors to socialize and even exercise as they help other people. It’s also a good way to learn new skills for free,” Atai said. “Everything about it improves holistic wellness.”
Welcome a pet
Consider adopting or fostering a pet. A pet, particularly the four-legged kind, offers valuable companionship and encourages physical activity and playfulness. A pet can help increase happiness and reduce stress and anxiety.
“Pets can be very good company and very loving. The responsibility of feeding, bathing, and looking after them also helps seniors maintain their cognitive abilities. People who own pets are less likely to be depressed and more likely to be healthier,” Atai said.
Grow a green thumb
Keep plants in the home and yard; possibly start a garden. Plants require watering and attention to thrive. Nurturing this form of life keeps the mind occupied and beautifies the environment. Plants can also improve mood and lower stress.
“Plants are very therapeutic and great for your mental health,” Atai said. “Caring for another living thing and helping it grow helps you feel better and happier, even when it’s just you.”
Play mind games
Keep your mind occupied with brain-boosting activities. Putting together jigsaw puzzles, performing word searches, reading books, learning a new language, and even making crafts are all examples of mental workouts. Activities that require focus can help people have their own fun.
“It’s important to keep your mind active and stimulated as you get older, especially if you live alone,” Atai said. “Puzzles and books are great — and so is listening to your favorite music. If TV is a must, trivia game shows can be engaging.”
Call grandma!
Seniors need to keep themselves connected to others, but family members and friends need to make the same effort. Make it a point to visit or call older family members or friends on a regular basis. Routinely speak with them so they feel remembered.
“I’ve learned a lot from my families. Some grandkids call their grandma every day at a certain time, and these calls become more precious as the years pass. It shows how something so simple can go such a long way,” Atai said. “Staying in contact with an aging family member makes them feel better, and it helps you notice when things begin to change or if something bad happens. We all need to look out for one another.”

The 59-year-old posted about the video on his Instagram page, sharing a photo of himself next to Stormzy, captioned: “Was great fun doing this cameo for Stormzy’s new music video out today. I had a great time.”
Amongst other surprise cameos in the video is Usain Bolt, the current holder of the 100 and 200 meter world records.
Earlier this year, Jose Mourinho had created history after becoming only the second manager to win five major European titles after Giovanni Trapattoni as his AS Roma side clinched the UEFA Europa Conference League.
Mourinho, who had previously won the Champions League, Europa League and the UEFA Cup, completed a unique European trophy haul as Roma beat Feyenoord 1-0 in Tirana to ensure he could add the inaugural Conference League to his collection.
That is five European finals at Porto, Internazionale, Manchester United and Roma since 2003 that Mourinho has coached in and five times he has taken home the trophy. The win also makes him the only coach in European history to have won the Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Super Cup and, now, the Conference League.

This portable outdoor lantern will come in handy for your next backyard bonfire, camping trip and more. According to the brand, it features a frosted shade for even light and will last up to 70 hours with AAA batteries.
Sunbeam Heated Electric Mattress Pad
Nothing is more satisfying than getting into a warm, cozy bed. Chen chose this heated mattress for those extra-cold nights. It features 10 heat settings and auto shutoff. It has over 4,000 Amazon five-star ratings and one verified reviewer wrote, “it helps me sleep deeper, maybe I needed a warm bed and did not have one before. It also helps my arthritis, I can sit longer at my desk now.”
Rain Design iLevel 2 Adjustable Laptop Stand
Chen says this laptop stand is a great option for those traveling back and forth between the home and office. According to the brand, the adjustable height brings the laptop to your eye level to protect your posture and keeps you from feeling hunched over all day. The brand also mentions it’s compatible with MacBooks and most PC laptops and notebooks.
Logitech K380 Multi-Device Bluetooth Keyboard
Whether you’re a remote or hybrid worker or travel a lot, Chen likes this Logitech bluetooth keyboard. Coming in three different colors, the brand says this universal keyboard is compact, making it easy to travel with. They also mention it is compatible with most devices, including Windows, Mac, Chrome, iPads and more.
ComfiLife Footrest for Under Desk
Upgrade your office or work-from-home space with this cozy footrest, which features an adjustable height and memory foam cushion. According to the brand, this product is perfect for those who sit for a long period of time and they say it will help relieve pain and pressure from the back and hips.
Celestron Electric 3-in-1 Outdoor Tool and Hand Warmer
Whether you’re sitting in the bleachers for an evening game or out for a stroll, Chen loves this 3-in-1 gadget for those chilly nights because it functions as a hand warmer. The brand also mentions it can be used as a portable phone charger and LED flashlight, making it perfect for evening walks or even fall camping.
More must-have gadgets for outdoors and home, according to Steve Greenberg
“Gadget Nation” author and tech expert Steve Greenberg previously joined TODAY with Hoda & Jenna to share some useful and entertaining gadgets. From cool picks for outdoor gatherings to solar-powered bug zappers, Greenberg’s recommendations are sure to be a hit.
Lexon Mina M Rechargeable LED Lamp
Spruce up your backyard decor or set the mood with these fun lights at late-night barbecues. You can switch up the color of the lighting, from warm white to cool white to blue, just by tapping the top of the dome. You can also dim it by pressing down on the top, too. Plus the brand says it is water-resistant.
Sunfox Solar Speaker
From the pool to picnics, a portable speaker can come in handy for just about any occasion. Greenberg picked this handheld option from Sunfox, which can fully recharge in as little as 16 hours of sunlight or within two hours via a USB port. According to the brand, it is also waterproof, sand-proof and shockproof, so you can bring it along for many outdoor adventures.
Calicle Bowl Set
Ice cream shouldn’t be enjoyed as a soup. These insulated bowls can help prevent frozen treats from melting, and even come with their own lids. According to the brand, they can help keep ice cream at the right temperature for up to 200% longer than traditional bowls.
Bite Away
Bug bites are often unavoidable, but according to the brand, this gizmo can at least help to take away some of the itching and swelling they cause. With the press of a button, the device channels heat to the ceramic plates on its end (up to 124 degrees), which can be applied directly to the bite. The brand says it is a chemical-free way to reduce bug bite reactions for everyone ages 2 and up.
The Solar Insect Zappers
Rather than wasting your own physical energy trying to keep bugs away, Greenberg found these solar-powered zappers that you can place around your yard to help eliminate mosquitoes and other insects. According to the brand, they only require moderate sunlight and can provide protection for up to eight hours on a full charge.
Colsen Tabletop Fire Pit
Whether you’re an apartment dweller or simply don’t have enough room for a fire pit in your backyard, this portable fire pit can bring the bonfire vibes right into your home — without any of the smoke. All you need is some rubbing alcohol and a well-ventilated room to light it in.
Swimways Dry Float Shadester Pool Float
Relaxing in the pool sounds nice, but not everyone wants to get wet while doing it. This float was designed with those people in mind. It is elevated above water, so your chances of getting wet are lower. It can support up to 250 pounds, is ergonomically contoured for comfortable lounging and features a sun canopy to help keep you cool, too.
More must-have gadgets for outdoors and home
Groview Mini Projector
Whether you’re looking to create the ultimate home theater or host outdoor movie nights, this mini projector is a great addition for your home or backyard. Featuring an easy WiFi setup, you can even hook up to Fire Sticks, Chromecast, laptops and more, according to the brand. Add in an 80 to 100 inch projection screen for optimal viewing, the brand shares.
Bonak Wireless Bluetooth Karaoke Microphone
Your next gathering will be a hit with this wireless karaoke microphone, which features bluetooth capabilities. By pairing with your phone and hooking up with the included singing app, you’ll be able to show off your karaoke skills with your favorite songs.
INSMY Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker
This waterproof speaker is perfect for the shower, hiking, vacations or anywhere you might want to listen to music. According to the brand, it can be fully immersed in three feet of water for up to 30 minutes.

Saylor made the comment during an interview with MarketWatch’s inaugural ‘Best New Ideas in Money Festival.’ Saylor told MarketWatch’s editor-in-chief Mark DeCambre that he has been watching Bitcoin’s simple moving average over four years for a potential bottom. This metric currently stands at around $20,000.
“It has touched that a few times. I think this is stable. The next logical stop for bitcoin is to replace gold as a non-sovereign store of value asset,” Saylor said.
Meanwhile, the Bitcoin evangelist also disclosed during the interview that MicroStrategy is building a Bitcoin Lightning Network wallet. The wallet is targeted at serving enterprises, which are already MicroStrategy’s main customer base.
The Bitcoin L2 compatible wallet will facilitate enterprise use cases such as wrapping their websites in “a layer of digital energy to protect it from cybersecurity threats” and paying employees with Bitcoin.
This is not the first time Saylor has expressed strongly bullish sentiments for Bitcoin. Earlier this year, the billionaire remarked that Bitcoin is the only scarcity in the world as reported by Business Insider. The comment snubs gold completely as Saylor maintains that the precious metal can be created indefinitely.
“I can create more real estate in New York City. I can create more cars. I can create more luxury watches. I can create more gold. I can create more shares of a stock. I can create more bond,” he said.
Saylor preparing for a Bitcoin-dominated future
Saylor ultimately expects Bitcoin to trade at around $500,000 per Bitcoin when its market capitalization surpassed the around $11 trillion market cap of gold. This is one reason he has cited in MicroStrategy’s ongoing addition to its balance sheet.
At present, MicroStrategy is one of the biggest publicly traded holders of Bitcoin. In a disclosure this month, Saylor revealed that MicroStrategy added another 301 Bitcoins – bought for about $6 million between August 2 and September 19 – to its balance sheet. This brings the enterprise softwares company’s Bitcoin holdings to more than 130,000 BTC.
Bloomberg reports that these bets on Bitcoin have so far cost MicroStrategy losses of as much as $1 billion. Further losses are expected if the company continues borrowing to fund its purchase of the volatile assets especially as interest rates are getting hiked the report opined.

U.S. Supreme Court Says Execution Of Alan Miller Can Proceed – WBRC https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/u-s-supreme-court-says-execution-of-alan-miller-can-proceed-wbrc/
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The United States Supreme Court ruled Thursday evening that the execution of 57-year-old Alan Miller can proceed.
Earlier this week, a U.S. judge blocked the state from executing Miller by any method other than nitrogen hypoxia. This decision came after Miller claimed the state lost paperwork requesting an alternative to lethal injection.
The state of Alabama appealed that order. The case was sent to the U.S. Supreme Court Thursday for a decision.
The state is prepared to go forward with the execution, if it can be performed before the death warrant expires at midnight.
Miller was found guilty and sentenced to death in a 1999 workplace shooting that killed three men.

Blockbusters Gaming Championship Is Back But Will Dr Disrespect Defend His Crown? Dexerto
Blockbuster’s Gaming Championship Is Back But Will Dr Disrespect Defend His Crown? – Dexerto https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/blockbusters-gaming-championship-is-back-but-will-dr-disrespect-defend-his-crown-dexerto/
It’s a well-known ‘fact’ that Dr Disrespect is the two-time Blockbuster video games champion, having won back-to-back events in 1993-1994. But with the tournament now returning for another round three decades later, will the YouTube star look to defend his crown?
If you’re well-versed in Doc lore, you’re all too familiar with his Blockbuster history. Back in the 90s, long before his ascent as a content creator, Dr Disrespect allegedly ran away with multiple championship wins at major events hosted by the now-defunct movie rental company.
At least, that’s how his retelling of the story goes.
For years now the popular streamer has reflected on this high-point, so much so it’s become ingrained as one of his more recognizable nicknames: The two-time. His back-to-back tournament wins are now folklore in the streaming age.
Despite Blockbuster filing for bankruptcy in 2010, and just one franchised store still standing today, the company appears to be showing signs of life. 28 years removed from Doc’s last gaming championship win, it seems there’s now a chance for him to become the ‘three-time’ as the Blockbuster World Video Game Championship is making a return.
“In the mid-90s, at the height of the Sega / Nintendo rivalry Blockbuster held two competitions retro gamers fondly remember,” a blog post announcing the event’s return read. “The Blockbuster World Video Game Championship 3 will create new memories for a new generation.”
Set to feature as part of the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, a full-scale recreation of a Blockbuster store will serve as host to the third iteration of the event. This time around, players have to compete in two rounds of retro action.
Round one throws players into Saturn Bomberman while round two pivots to Downfall OG Plus. Those with the three highest scores at the end will be crowned the winners, with first place nabbing a $1,000 shopping spree at the expo.
Well aware of the event’s history, along with the supposed back-to-back champ, the official Blockbuster Twitter account has already reached out to Dr Disrespect. “Are you going to answer the call?” they asked on September 22.
For the time being, Doc is yet to acknowledge the challenge. But with a chance to defend his throne and claim a third title, it’s likely we’ll hear from him very soon.

Roseville resident, Olympian and wrestling coach, Quincy Lee Clark was arrested for “crimes committed against minors,” on Tuesday, Roseville Police said. Clark competed for Olympics Team USA in wrestling in the 2000 Olympics and, more recently, ran a sports training business out of his home in Roseville. On a tip from a local resident, police began an investigation of Mr. Clark. The case was sent to the Placer County District Attorney’s Office on September 15 and Clark was arrested on September 20. Police said Clark was arrested on several charges, including “lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 18 years old.” Police believe there may be additional victims and ask anyone with information on the case to call Roseville police at 916-746-1059. (KCRA3)
According to the Roseville Police department, a resident in the area of Fivestar Blvd flagged down an officer and told them that they had seen a suspect throw a flaming object at an unoccupied vehicle. The suspect then fled the scene. The Roseville PD officer put out a description of the vehicle and another officer was able to make a stop of the vehicle at North Sunrise. The primary suspect was taken into custody. It is unknown at this time whether the suspect had any connection with the victim vehicle. (City of Roseville Police Department via Facebook)
Due to budget shortfalls, South Placer Fire is shutting down two of its stations and decommissioning a truck. The South Placer Fire Protection District serves the communities of Granite Bay, Loomis, and the southern areas of Penryn and Newcastle. According to the announcement, Station 19, located at 7070 Auburn Folsom Road will be closed as of Saturday September 24, as will Station 15, located at 4650 East Roseville Parkway. Roseville Electric Utility customers could see an 11% increase starting in January 2023. Roseville Electric Utility is proposing an 8% energy surcharge in addition to an already-approved 3% increase. “These are challenging times for the electric utility industry, especially here in California. Our state is grappling with unprecedented drought and a substantial reduction in hydroelectric resources in addition to skyrocketing fuel prices,” Roseville Electric Utility wrote on its website. The utility said that the 8% surcharge is meant as a stop-gap until they can understand the impacts of the current volatile energy market. Once they understand long term impacts they will propose a base rate change, if necessary. (ABC10.com KXTV)

Whether you agree with President Biden that the pandemic is over or you agree with most scientists who say it’s definitely not over, it doesn’t really matter. The reality is that all around us, pandemic precautions have disappeared.
But getting on with life doesn’t have to mean throwing caution to the wind. Covid is still here, and case counts are on the rise in some communities. We all have to learn to live with covid.
Living with covid can be easy if you take simple, regular precautions. Jay Varma, a physician, expert in infectious diseases and professor of population health sciences at Weill Cornell Medicine, has compared this new normal to the adjustments we all had to make regarding safety after 9/11. We’ve grown used to additional restrictions around travel, such as taking our shoes off in airline screening lines, as an inconvenience to stay safer.
I’ve spent nearly three years reporting on covid and pandemic life, talking to many of the world’s leading experts in public health and virus transmission. We don’t have to chose between staying safer and living a normal life. We can do both. Here are 10 tips to help, including some of the steps I’m taking to protect myself.
Get a booster shot. Start by getting vaccinated or getting a booster shot. Read this Q&A for answers to common questions about the new boosters.
Mask when it’s easy. Nobody wants to wear a mask all day long, so be strategic. I don’t normally wear a mask at work, but I wear one in a crowded meeting. You might want to mask in the grocery store; it’s a building full of strangers and covid is probably there too. Mask at the doctor’s office or on your commute if you take public transit. Risk is cumulative, so every time you don a mask in a high-risk situation, you’re lowering your odds of catching the virus.
Mask when you travel. Your risk for coming into contact with covid goes up when you travel. Lower it by wearing a mask in the security line and in crowded terminals. Airplanes have effective ventilation systems, filtering air as often as every five minutes, but I still wear a mask. If it’s a long trip and you just don’t want to mask up, consider wearing one during the boarding and deplaning process, when the ventilation system may be off. And here’s a travel tip from virus experts: During the flight, turn the fan nozzle on and position it to blow on your face to help keep any wandering viral particles at bay.
Avoid crowds. Whether you heed this advice probably will depend on your overall risk. Young and healthy people who are vaccinated may choose to spend time in packed indoor areas. People who are older or who have an underlying health condition may opt for outdoor areas when it comes to dining, sporting events and concerts. And for indoor events such as going to the movies or theater, the cautious may still want to wear a high-quality mask.
Check community transmission levels. Keeping track of case counts in your community can help guide your choices. In the United States, if you look at a map of transmission levels from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, be sure you use the drop-down menu to see “community transmission,” not “covid-19 community levels,” which are an indicator of how hospitals are managing and not as relevant to personal decision-making.
Have a Paxlovid plan. People over 50 and those at high risk are eligible to take Paxlovid, a highly effective antiviral drug. You’ll need to start within five days of diagnosis or symptom onset, so it’s important to talk to your doctor and have a plan for getting a prescription quickly if you need it.
Think about your indoor air. Adding a portable air cleaner to a space can effectively double the ventilation in the room. Ask your employer to provide portable air cleaners in office spaces and meeting rooms. Ask how often the filters are changed. You can also ask your employer what steps have been taken to improve indoor air quality at the office. Many workplaces have upgraded air filters to hospital-grade quality filters. (Ideally your workplace is using something called MERV-13 filters, but some systems can only handle MERV-11 filters.)
Use home tests wisely. While a negative home test means you’re probably not contagious, it’s not a guarantee you don’t have covid. If you have cold symptoms or don’t feel well, especially if you’ve had a known exposure to the virus or have been in a higher-risk situation such as traveling or an indoor concert, you should stay away from others or wear a mask until your symptoms subside — even if your test is negative.
Stay home from work when you’re sick. One of the great lessons of the pandemic is that we should not go to the office with the sniffles or a sore throat. Just stay home and Zoom in if you feel well enough to work.
Plan your life around the most vulnerable person in your orbit. If you have regular close contact with someone who is older, has a chronic illness or is immunocompromised, you’ll need to take more precautions and be more vigilant about masking, testing and avoiding high-risk situations.
The bottom line is that it’s not all or nothing, said Gregg Gonsalves, an epidemiologist and associate professor at Yale School of Public Health. “There’s lots of reasons we shouldn’t be just vaxxed and done. One infection with the virus can sideline you or disrupt your life or the lives of those around you very easily.”
Three questions . . . about smarter exercise
This week I spoke with Your Move columnist Gretchen Reynolds, who has written about the perils of being an active couch potato and whether morning or night is the best time of day to exercise.
Q: Why is it so hard for people to establish a regular exercise habit?
A: Most people, including me, say it’s because we don’t have time. But most behavioral science says it’s because we aren’t having fun. If people don’t like exercise, they won’t do it. The good news is there are so many ways to be active. Don’t relish jogging? There’s swimming, hiking, mountain biking, weight training, pickleball, online yoga, walks with friends or whatever movement you enjoy. It could help, too, to reframe workouts as “me time” or healthy procrastination. In that case, you’re not just going for a walk or swim. You’re taking a mental health break and will return to work refreshed, alert and eager to procrastinate some more tomorrow.
Q: What’s more important for health: exercising more or sitting less?
A: Can I answer “both”? There’s no doubt sitting is bad for us. It impacts our bodies in ways that raise our risks for everything from weight gain to heart disease. And new studies suggest short workouts won’t undo those effects. We probably need to exercise for at least an hour a day to combat long hours of sitting. Or we can sit less and move around more, breaking up our sitting with gentle activity but not formal exercise. Either approach is healthy and combining them — exercising more plus sitting less — is healthiest of all, if you can manage it.
Q: What’s your favorite short workout?
A: I love to fartlek, which just means I pick out a tree or other landmark when I’m out walking or running and pick up the pace until I reach it. My fartlek sessions are usually brief, maybe 15 minutes. But it’s such a fun, easy way to thread intensity into a workout and make the time go faster. I’m never bored when I fartlek.
This week’s everyday life coach is Shunmyo Masuno, a monk and the author of a new book I’m reading, “Don’t Worry: 48 Lessons on Relieving Anxiety from a Zen Buddhist Monk.”
The advice: Make your evenings calm. “One of the tricks to making your evening calm is to avoid, as much as possible, having to make decisions at this time,” Masuno writes.
Why you should try it: In one study, researchers tracked the decisions of 184 chess players. The study, published in the journal Cognition, found that the most accurate decision-making happened between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.
How to do it: Adding calm to your evening will vary depending on the person. Evenings can be hectic for parents, and sometimes we have to take work home with us. Whatever your situation, try to carve out a little time for calm before bed. Some people may want to read a book or listen to music. Make evening the time you work on a craft or hobby. Light a candle. Take a bath. “When you make time for pleasure, you will naturally feel calmer and more at ease,” Masuno writes. “You end up improving the quality of your sleep, and you will awake refreshed and ready for your day.”

Diamondbacks Go For Series Victory Vs. Dodgers – Sports Illustrated https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/diamondbacks-go-for-series-victory-vs-dodgers-sports-illustrated/
Zac Gallen and Julio Urias face off in potential pitcher’s duel
Zac Gallen and Julio Urias face off in potential pitcher’s duel
The Arizona Diamondbacks will try to win a series against the Dodgers in Los Angeles for the first time since April of 2018. Game time is 7:10 P.M. MST. After dropping the first two games of the series, the D-backs managed to take the next two, setting up tonight’s rubber match. While it may not mean as much to Dodgers who have already clinched the division title, the young D-backs are eager to show they can play with the NL West titans.
PITCHING MATCHUP
RHP Zac Gallen, (12-3, 2.52 ERA, 3.03 FIP) gets the ball for the D-backs and LHP Julio Urias (17-7, 2.27 ERA, 3.71 FIP) goes for the Dodgers. These are two evenly matched pitchers but they will not be facing evenly matched lineups. The Dodgers average 5.36 runs per game, while the Diamondbacks average 4.38.
Gallen is coming off his first loss since June 10th. On September 17th he allowed just two runs in 5.1 innings to the San Diego Padres but received no run support as the D-backs were shut out in that game. Earlier this month Gallen had a franchise record streak of 44.1 consecutive scoreless innings broken by the Colorado Rockies. This will only be Gallen’s second start against the Dodgers in 2022. The first one came all the way back on April 27th when he threw six shutout innings, getting a no-decision in a 3-1 D-backs win.
Urias may be the hottest pitcher in baseball. Over his last 16 starts he’s 15-1 with a 1.91 ERA. His season ERA of 2.27 is now the lowest in the league and he’s thrust himself into the middle of the Cy Young race for the second year in a row. He beat the Giants in his last start allowing one run in six innings. This is also just his second start this year against Arizona. He started in that same game on April 27th, going six innings and allowing one run in a no-decision as well.

Jack Sommers
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo is sticking with his mostly right-handed lineup against the lefty Urias. However Urias is equally tough against batters from both sides of the plate. RHB are hitting .199 with a .601 OPS against him while LHB are hitting .190 with a .589 OPS. Switch hitter Ketel Marte will lead off for just the second time this season. Christian Walker is at DH today, getting half a day off his feet, with Emmanuel Rivera filling in at first base.
Mookie Betts will not start for the second time in this series as Dave Roberts elects to rotate his starters as well, trying to keep them fresh down the stretch.

12 Big Features Are Hitting Your IPhone Soon With IOS 16.1 – Gadget Hacks https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/12-big-features-are-hitting-your-iphone-soon-with-ios-16-1-gadget-hacks/
It hasn’t been long since Apple released iOS 16.0 with over 350 new features, but iOS 16.1 is hot on its tail with even more cool updates for your iPhone. While some of the recent upgrades were expected, others are somewhat surprising — and there’s even one that you may not even think was possible.
Apple’s iOS 16.1 update is still in beta testing, but you can install the beta on your iPhone right now if you want to start testing the below features out before everyone else. Some of these features also appear on iPadOS 16.1 for iPad, also still in beta.
Don’t Miss: Apple Photos Has 21 New Features for iPhone That Make Your Life Easier
1. Larger Numbers for Battery Percentage
On iOS 16.0, Apple finally added a switch in the Battery settings on Face ID devices to enable the battery percentage in the status bar, something Touch ID devices have long been able to do. The update put the percentage inside the battery icon, and iOS 16.1 makes the numbers larger and easier to see. Below, you can see the icons before and after in light and dark modes.
2. Battery Percentage for More iPhones
While iOS 16.0 lets us add the battery percentage to the battery icon in the status bar on Face ID devices, it’s not available on all Face ID models. Specifically, the iPhone XR, 11, 12 mini, and 13 mini are left out, presumedly because of their smaller displays. The iOS 16.1 update adds support for those models, so now all iPhone models that can run iOS 16 can get the new battery icon.
3. Clean Energy Charging
Go to Settings – Battery, then open up the “Battery Health & Charging” menu, previously just “Battery Health,” and you’ll see a new option called “Clean Energy Charging.”
Apple says your iPhone “will try to reduce your carbon footprint by selectively charging when lower carbon emission electricity is available.” It goes on to say your iPhone “learns from your daily charging routine so it can reach full charge before you need to use it.”
The setting should be automatically enabled by default, but the “Learn More” link goes to a non-existing webpage, which should go live when iOS 16.1 stable is released.
4. Live Activities
Live Activities are finally here. They appear on the bottom of your iPhone’s lock screen, as well as in the Dynamic Island for the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max models, and display an app’s most current data, updated in real time.
Live sports games in the Apple TV app is one example of what Live Activities can do. Pick a live game available in your region from the Live Sports section, then tap the “Follow” button. You’ll then see the play-by-play and real-time scores on your lock screen and in the Dynamic Island if you have an iPhone 14 Pro or 14 Pro Max. Right now, I can only get it to work with MLB games.
According to Apple, a Live Activity can only be active for up to eight hours in the Dynamic Island, but it can go as long as 12 hours on the lock screen. So on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, a Live Activity would disappear from the Dynamic Island after eight hours but remain on your lock screen for up to four more hours. Needless to say, you can stop following a Live Activity at any time.
There are also four different viewing modes for Live Activities in the Dynamic Island: a compact leading view, a compact trailing view, a minimal view, and an expanded view.
5. Live Activities API
Live Activities aren’t just available for Apple’s apps — any third-party developer can incorporate them into their apps using the new ActivityKit framework. Examples of activities you could track include a ride pickup from Uber or Lyft, package delivery from UPS or FedEx, food delivery from GrubHub or DoorDash, pickup order for Starbucks or Target, workout using Nike or Health, and so on.
While developers are now building Live Activities for their apps, you won’t be able to try any out until the iOS 16.1 stable release appears. That’s because developers can’t submit their updated apps with Live Activities to the App Store until the iOS 16.1 Release Candidate is available, the last beta build. You may be able to find beta apps on TestFlight that are experimenting with Live Activities.
6. New Shortcut Actions
The iOS 16.0 update added almost 60 new actions in the Shortcuts app, and iOS 16.1 throws a few more in. One is “Get Current Focus” for the Settings app, which returns the currently active focus. The other is “Search in Shortcuts” for the Shortcuts app, which opens Shortcuts and performs a search for the specified text.
7. Delete Apple Wallet
If you don’t use Apple Pay, Apple Cash, Apple Card, or store loyalty cards and tickets in Apple Wallet, you can finally delete the Apple Wallet app. Before, you could only remove it from the home screen, hiding it in the App Library, but now it can be gone for good.
8. Lock Screen Customization Changes
Apple is making the lock screen and home screen customization less confusing on iOS 16.1. Now, whenever you hit the “Customize” button for a lock screen in the lock screen switcher, it will give you a choice between editing the lock screen or home screen wallpaper.
Previously, it would jump right to the lock screen editor when you tapped “Customize.” Then, when you were done editing it, you would get an option to “Set as Wallpaper Pair” or “Customize Home Screen.” You’ll still see those two options when adding a new lock screen.

9. Screenshot Editor Changes
When you tap on the thumbnail after taking a screenshot to open the editor, everything should look the same until it’s time to exit the editor. Tap “Done,” and instead of a large action sheet that takes up the bottom half of the screen (left screenshot below), you’ll get a smaller contextual menu near the “Done” button itself (right screenshot below).
10. iCloud Shared Photo Library
If you use Family Sharing to share content with your partner, kids, and other family members, iCloud Shared Photo Library is another feature you can now take advantage of. It can be shared with up to five users, and everyone can add, edit, favorite, caption, and delete content.
You can include all your photos in the shared library or use the setup tools to include only specific content based on a start date or group of people. People can also add content manually or share media automatically via a switch in the Camera app, using a Bluetooth proximity trigger, or from sharing suggestions in For You.
Content from your iCloud Shared Photo Library may appear in the Photos widget, under your Featured Photos in For You, or as memory videos.

11. Matter Support
Matter, a new unifying open connectivity standard for the Home app, Siri, Control Center, and HomeKit-based apps, enables secure, IP-based communication among a wide range of compatible smart home devices and accessories.
Designed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, which includes hundreds of companies like Apple, Amazon, and Google, the royalty-free protocol makes devices and accessories from different companies work together seamlessly across platforms. According to Apple, it will “provide more choice and interoperability for customers.”
Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings are just some of the smart home tech that will work with Matter. To use Matter accessories, you’ll need a home hub, such as an Apple TV or HomePod device.
12. Game Center Improvements
The Contacts app will show your friends’ Game Center profiles, and you can tap through to see what games they’re playing and the achievements they’re accomplishing. There’s also a new toggle in Game Center for “Allow finding by friends” and a new splash screen for it called “Help Your Friends Find You.”
Help your Game Center friends find you more easily based on the name they have for you in their Contacts app. To do this, Game Center will use the email address and phone number associated with your Apple ID.
Multiplayer games that work with Game Center are also expected to work with SharePlay, so you can play games with your friends during FaceTime calls.

What’s Missing?
There are still a few things Apple said were coming later this year that aren’t fully implemented yet on iOS 16.1, including key sharing via messaging apps, starting Live Activities from a Spotlight Search result, Live Activities for App Clips, and its new Freeform app.
