Crypto Prices Will ‘Nuke’ If 100 Bps Rate Announced At FOMC Meeting – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/crypto-prices-will-nuke-if-100-bps-rate-announced-at-fomc-meeting-cryptonews/ Two crypto experts shared their crypto price predictions heading into the FOMC meeting tomorrow at 2pm ET and Jerome Powell’s speech. FOMC Crypto Price Predictions With crypto prices falling in the past 24 hours – Bitcoin and Ethereum are down 3 to 4% – many traders are derisking, waiting on the sidelines and searching for crypto expert analysis online: Crypto Chase Crypto Chase (@Crypto_Chase, formerly @Chase_NL) has approximately 100,000 followers across Twitter and YouTube and correctly sold BTC at over $56k and ETH above $4k. His FOMC prediction is for crypto prices to crash in a ‘giga nuke’ if a 100 bps rate hike is the outcome – which the market predicts has a 16% probability of happening. If a 75 basis points hike is announced, he expects liquidity to be run in both directions – choppy price action and the usual ‘Darth Maul candle’ to stop out longs and shorts – before the long term crypto price move is decided by Fed chair Powell’s comments. Trading Tank Trading Tank (@TheTradingTank) posted a longer crypto prices forecast for his 7,700 followers across an eight tweet thread. His analysis was that since core CPI and PPI data ‘came in hot’ and inflation was higher than expected, the stock and crypto markets may have sold off as a reaction to price in a 75 bps rate hike. Similar to Chase Crypto, he expects a further sell off if a 100 bps hike is announced, potentially to test the lows (for the Bitcoin price, the $17,600 level hit in June) or crash further. ‘100bps would most likely create a sell-off and we could expect risk assets to test recent lows or maybe even break through. The actual economic effect of rate hikes does not fully materialize until 6+ months down the road, but investors behave as if they are immediate.’ However he also notes a 75 bps hike could improve sentiment and lead to a mid term crypto price rally – feeling like a ‘victory lap’ if it is in fact already priced in. Following the FOMC meeting, next week will see the release of US GDP data and PCE inflation data which Trading Tank argues is ‘just as important’. Bitcoin price chart over the past month pre FOMC meeting – daily timeframe Earlier this week CryptoNews reported on a third crypto analyst’s price prediction, Ted Talks Macro. He also predicted that the markets have priced in a 100 bps rate and risk assets like Bitcoin will rally if 75 bps is announced. FOMC Meeting Schedule The next FOMC meeting following Wednesday is scheduled for November 1st – 2nd. Find the full FOMC meeting calendar at federalreserve.org.

US And Canadian Warships Sail Through Taiwan Strait After Biden Vows To Defend Island – CNN https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/us-and-canadian-warships-sail-through-taiwan-strait-after-biden-vows-to-defend-island-cnn/ (CNN)US and Canadian warships sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday following weekend remarks from President Joe Biden that the US would defend Taiwan in the event it is attacked by China. A US Navy ship, the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Higgins, conducted a “routine Taiwan Strait transit” on Tuesday, US Navy spokesperson Lt. Mark Langford said in a statement. The US ship conducted the transit “in cooperation with Royal Canadian Navy Halifax-class frigate HMCS Vancouver,” Langford said. The two ships “transited through a corridor in the Strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal State,” Lt. Langford said. The transit “demonstrates the commitment of the United States and our allies and partners to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Lt. Langford added. Tuesday’s transit marked the second time in just over three weeks that a US Navy warship had made the voyage. The guided-missile cruisers USS Antietam and USS Chancellorsville did so on August 28. Since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in early August, the US has witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of Chinese military ships and submarines around Taiwan, a US defense official told CNN. Though the US called the transit “routine,” it comes after Biden added fuel to tensions between Washington and Beijing over Taiwan, telling CBS’s “60 Minutes” that he would use US troops to defend the island if China tried to invade. The strait is a 110-mile (180-kilometer) stretch of water that separates the democratic self-ruled island of Taiwan from mainland China. Beijing claims sovereignty over Taiwan — an island of 23 million people — despite China’s ruling Communist Party never having controlled it. Beijing also claims sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction over the waters of the Taiwan Strait under Chinese law and its interpretation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The US Navy, however, says most of the strait is in international waters, citing a UNCLOS definition of territorial waters as extending 12 nautical miles (22.2 kilometers) from a country’s coastline. The US regularly sends its warships through the strait, making dozens of such transits in recent years. In the CBS interview, Biden was asked whether “US forces, US men and women, would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.” “Yes,” the US President replied. The comments reiterate a pledge to defend Taiwan that Biden has previously made, though Sunday he specified that “US men and women” would be involved in the effort. Canadian Ministry of Defence Head of Media Relations Daniel Le Bouthillier confirmed Canada participated in the transit on Tuesday. “Following port visits in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Manila, Philippines, HMCS Vancouver sailed through the Taiwan Strait along with the USS Higgins, as this was the most direct navigational route. This sail was done in full accordance with international law, including high seas navigation rights as outlined in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea,” Le Bouthillier told CNN. Chinese aircraft and ships were present through “various parts” of the US and Canadian ships’ transit, US military confirmed, but “all interactions with foreign military forces during the transit were consistent with international standards and practices and did not impact the operation,” Langford said. Beijing swiftly condemned Biden’s weekend comments and repeated its warning that China reserves the “option to take all necessary measures” to defend its territorial integrity and sovereignty. “The US remarks seriously violate the one-China principle and the provisions of the three US-China joint communiqués. It is also a serious violation of the important commitment made by the US side not to support Taiwan independence,” China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning said in a briefing Monday. “It sent a serious wrong signal to the separatist forces of Taiwan independence. China expresses its strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition and has made serious representations to the US side,” Mao added. US and Canadian warships last went through the strait at the same time 11 months ago, when the destroyer USS Dewey and frigate HMCS Winnipeg made the trip. After that transit, Senior Col. Shi Yi, spokesperson for the People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command, said in a written statement that “the US and Canada made provocations with odious nature and stirred up troubles in cahoots, which seriously jeopardized the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.” Chinese leader Xi Jinping has said that “reunification” between China and Taiwan is inevitable and refused to rule out the use of force. Tensions between Beijing and Taipei are at the highest they’ve been in recent decades, with the Chinese military holding major military drills near the island.

10 Solo Travel Destinations For Your First Trip Alone The Washington Post
10 Solo Travel Destinations For Your First Trip Alone The Washington Post
10 Solo Travel Destinations For Your First Trip Alone – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/10-solo-travel-destinations-for-your-first-trip-alone-the-washington-post/ Traveling alone is one of life’s most rewarding — and sometimes embarrassing — experiences, whether you’re fresh out of high school or you’re married with kids. You get to wander on your own schedule, follow your instincts and pursue your perfect travel day. But you’re also out of your element. You may have to navigate foreign cultural norms and faux pas. You may fail in the process. The good news is those blunders build character — and make for better travel stories. If you’re new to solo travel, it can feel overwhelming to pick a place to go, let alone plan the whole trip. I’ve had the best time where there’s accessible public transportation and plentiful Ubers or taxis. My favorite places feel vibrant and safe beyond hotels and resorts. Remember that destinations that may have been perfect for some solo travelers may have been terrible for others. Some may be great for men but unsafe for women or people of color. Do your homework before you start locking in a trip to make sure a place is right for you, and take some basic precautions: make sure your phone’s going to work if you’re traveling abroad, and enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive important alerts and make yourself easier to locate in an emergency. So where should you go? Start with these 10 places. 1 San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico Return to menu After traveling more than 20,000 miles across Mexico — passing through 32 states and 156 cities — cookbook author Rick Martinez has many recommendations for solo trips. San Cristóbal de las Casas, a town in the Chiapas highlands, makes his shortlist for its Spanish colonial architecture, textile artisans and outdoor markets. The cafe culture reminds Martinez of Paris. “You can people-watch and relax,” he said, “and the food is really amazing.” Don’t leave without trying the city’s tamales, roasted plantains and other fruits — from guava to apples to passion fruit — preserved in syrups and alcohol. Fair warning: you’ll have to fly to the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez and take a bus. Return to menu According to findings from a VacationRenter analysis on “The Best (And Worst) Travel Destinations for Introverts,” Denver is the top pick based on factors like population density, walkability and the range of activities. That makes sense; Denver has a laid-back style and is easy to get around, offering something for every kind of solo traveler (extroverts, too). Once you get off the Denver airport rail at Union Station, the world is your oyster. Visit distilleries and breweries, hike close to the city or take a walking tour to see the city like a local, appreciating the murals along Cherry Creek trail. Return to menu After five experiences traveling alone in Japan, I fully endorse a solo trip to the country whether you want excitement, peace and quiet or something in between. I’m not alone. “I loved traveling Japan solo because it is safe, clean, and people are so respectful, kind, and helpful,” Annie Cheng, founder of the group tour company The Table Less Traveled, said in an email. The obvious place to go — particularly for travelers who may feel self-conscious being on their own — is Tokyo, where restaurants, bars and public baths cater to the solo customer. You could spend your entire trip in Japan’s capital, or venture out by train to see more of the country’s special pockets, from mountainous Sapporo to the beaches of Okinawa to bustling Osaka. Don’t feel intimidated to plan a trip if you don’t speak Japanese. “Despite the language barrier, I’ve had some of my best meals in Japan traveling solo,” Cheng said. Her advice for travelers is to get outside of their comfort zone, try to talk to anyone you can. “You may feel awkward, stupid, or embarrassed if it doesn’t go as you planned, but in the best case scenario you make a new friend and local connection,” Cheng said. Return to menu Chanice “Queenie” Williams, founder of the blog and travel planning site Fly with Queenie, says her solo trip to Tanzania this summer was a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. With an itinerary full of cities, national parks and beaches, it felt “perfect for solo travelers, particularly women who may not feel comfortable alone,” Williams said in an email. On her trip through Arusha, Moshi, Zanzibar, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, Williams stayed in hostels where she could meet other solo travelers, choosing places that had good reviews online before booking. Zanzibar’s population is predominantly Muslim, so “adhering to the dress code and covering up will keep you from standing out and getting stares,” Williams advises. Return to menu Food writer, photographer and cookbook author Saghar Setareh is has a list of criteria that makes a place great for solo travel. There has to be good public transportation (an essential perk whether you’re visiting for a layover or a proper vacation), rich cultural and historic appeal as well as an exciting food scene to explore at different price ranges. Istanbul ticks every box. Hop on a $3 bus at the Istanbul Airport and you’ll be in the city in 45 minutes where you’ll find everything on Setareh’s list and more. Return to menu While Italy’s big cities are immensely popular for wandering alone, Katie Parla, author of the forthcoming cookbook “Food of the Italian Islands,” recommends heading off the coast of Lazio to the volcanic island of Ponza. It’s not just the destination that dazzles her, “I actually love the part of getting there,” she said in an email. To get to Ponza from Rome — about a four-hour trip door-to-door, Parla says — you’ll have to take a ferry after a train or a bus. Parla’s No. 1 tip for visitors is to rent a boat to explore the island’s breathtaking bays. After you drop anchor, “it is pure freedom to rent a scooter and zip around the volcanic contours of Ponza en route to aperitivo or dinner in the village of Le Forna as the sun sets over neighboring Palmarola in the distance,” Parla said. Return to menu Anais Martinez, a food blogger and culinary tour guide from Mexico City, recommends her hometown for any solo traveler. One of the biggest cities in the world, it’s full of museums and archaeological sites to wander, parks and public squares for people-watching and amazing food at every price point. For those worried about getting into said famous restaurants, most “would happily take solo travelers even if there is a long waiting list,” Martinez said in an email. “Show up at the door as soon as they open and you just might get lucky.” Return to menu Easy train to the airport? Check. Amazing food from every corner of the globe? Check. An eclectic mix of neighborhoods you can explore by foot? Check. San Francisco is a no-brainer for solo travel. Walk the city’s 49 square miles to get a feel of it all, from the foggy end-of-the-earth vibes of the Outer Sunset all the way to the waterfront Embarcadero, stopping along the way to grab a seat at the bar at one of the city’s many restaurants. Return to menu If you want a solo trip in paradise, Bali is the place. After my first trip to Bali, in 2015, I felt a gravitational pull to return for more time surfing, eating, making new friends, practicing the local language, listening to bewitching music played on the gamelan and exploring the coastline and nearby islands — all while feeling safe and relaxed on my own. If you’ve never been to the Indonesian island, don’t spend your whole time in Seminyak and Ubud. Rent a motorbike and get to know the rest of the island — which is only about 95 miles wide east to west. You can ride through lush rainforest and rice terraces to pristine beaches with immaculate waves to surf and places to hike, or find new spots to feast on Indonesian cuisine. Return to menu Ranked one of the safest cities in the world, Amsterdam attracts solo travelers with its architecture, parks, restaurants and nightlife. The capital of the Netherlands was travel writer Ali Wunderman’s first stop as a solo traveler, and a favorite destination for countless others with similar stories. Maybe that’s because it’s simple to navigate between biking and taking the tram. Or maybe it’s that “the hostels in Amsterdam are known to be great places to meet people,” Wunderman said. It was easy for her to make friends to go sightseeing and museum-hopping. But even when she was on her own, “It’s impossible to get bored,” she said.

Business News: B.C. Companies Fined Over Social Media Posts – CTV News Vancouver https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/business-news-b-c-companies-fined-over-social-media-posts-ctv-news-vancouver/ A consultant, a mining company and a CBD distributor have been fined in B.C. for failing to disclose when they paid for promotional social media content, including posts shared by influencers. The BC Securities Commission released details of three similar settlement agreements on Tuesday. In each case, a company called Stock Social was hired to conduct “investor relations activities” including creating advertorials and social media posts. In cases where this kind of content is created and distributed at the behest of a company, the financial markets regulator requires a publicly-traded company “to clearly and conspicuously disclose” that fact, the BCSC notes in each of the announcements of the settlements. In the first case, Chad McMillan, a consultant hired by a virtual reality company called ImagineAR Inc., was fined $10,000. The content he hired the marketing company to produce included an advertorial that “was written in the style of a news article designed to look and read like objective journalistic content” as well as posts shared by six influencers in 2017 and 2018. In the second, John-David Alexander Belfontaine, the CEO of a CBD food and beverage distributor called Phivida Holdings Inc, was fined $10,000 for similar activity. In this case, the BCSC found that Belfontaine personally reviewed advertorials and Facebook posts but did not “correct the deficiencies” by directing the marketing company to add the required disclaimer. In the third, a $35,000 fine was handed down. MGX Minerals Inc. and CEO Jared Michael Lazerson hired the marketing company in 2017 to create six advertorials and to engage 17 influencers to promote the content on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. “The advertorials were written to look and read like objective journalistic content. Some of them inconspicuously directed readers to a disclaimer on another website,” the settlement agreement reads. “Others indicated a fee had been paid, but did not identify who paid, or who was paid, for the content. Some indicated MGX as the source, but stated the author was a third party and that the content was not reflective of the company’s opinion.” The company was fined $25,000 and Lazerson was fined $10,000. In all of the cases, those involved admitted the misconduct, pre-empting the need for the matter to go to a hearing.

He mentions all the winning photos of past U.S. teams and how this group wants to be in the next picture. Loves says this 12-man squad doesn’t have a record because it has never played together. International captain Trevor Immelman looks forward to what he sees as an uphill battle. He lost a lot of players to LIV Golf. But he likes the 12 who have rallied around the underdog label. North Carolina has made one more pitch to host the 2027 World University Games, as the committee evaluating the state’s bid visited the region.  A panel of the International University Sports Federation visited on Tuesday the Executive Mansion, where Gov. Roy Cooper presented its members with an official bid book. The other finalist is Chungcheong province, South Korea. A final announcement is expected in November. North Carolina’s proposal would cover the “University Hub” region designated as including Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary and Greensboro. A Utah boy who suffered a serious head injury after falling from a bunk bed during last month’s Little League World Series has returned home from the hospital and his family is suing the league and the company that made the bed. The family’s lawyer,  Ken Fulginiti, said Tuesday that 12-year-old Easton Oliverson has undergone three brain operations and is now experiencing seizures. The lawsuit accuses Little League International and  Savoy Contract Furniture of Williamsport of negligence for using or selling bunk beds without safety railings. Neither defendant immediately responded to messages seeking comment about the lawsuit. Fulginiti says Easton fell off the top bunk in his sleep on Aug. 15. He came home from the hospital last week. SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Sharks in recent years almost no choice but to include some forwards on their opening night rosters who just weren’t ready to play a full season in the NHL. As often happens, NBC’s ‘Sunday Night Football’ game won the week’s rating competition, but the Chicago-Green Bay game had a tough battle with the revamped “Monday Night Football” game. That game, between Denver and Seattle, was seen by nearly 10.3 million on ABC and another 8 million people when it was simulcast on ESPN. CBS’ “60 Minutes” was the most popular non-football game on TV, with its season debut featuring an interview with President Joe Biden reaching 10.2 million people. Dauphin County prosecutors said Tuesday that two Middletown players will face attempted sexual assault charges and eight others face other counts in connection with hazing that authorities said targeted at least six players from ages 14 to 17. The head football coach resigned within days of a cellphone video surfacing. School officials last month said they had decided to cancel the football season after finding out about a second video and the involvement of more players. Debutant left-arm fast bowler Luke Wood grabbed 3-24 to help limit Pakistan to 158-7 after captain Moeen Ali won the toss in his country of roots and elected to field. Alex Hales smashed 53 off 40 balls and led the visitors to 160-4 in 19.2 overs. Pakistan couldn’t capitalize on Mohammad Rizwan (68) and captain Babar Azam’s (31) aggressive opening stand of 85 off 57 balls before the middle-order capitulated against Wood in the death overs. The Big Ten’s tradition of producing elite running backs is alive and well. The conference features the nation’s top two rushers in Illinois’ Chase Brown and Minnesota’s Mohamed Ibrahim. Four others are running for better than 100 yards per game. No other league has more than three. The Big Ten is the only conference the last 10 years that has had at least two players finish the season with rushing averages of 100 yards per game or better. Others averaging at least 100 yards are Nebraska’s Anthony Grant, Penn State’s Nicholas Singleton, Wisconsin’s Braelon Allen and Northwestern’s Evan Hull. The Atlantic Coast Conference is relocating its headquarters but remaining in its home state of North Carolina. The league announced it would move its offices from Greensboro to downtown Charlotte in 2023. The league was founded in Greensboro in 1953. Commissioner Jim Phillips had been discussing the possibility since last year after taking over for the retiring John Swofford. Phillips said last October that the ACC’s school presidents and chancellors had inquired about the future of the league’s headquarters during his interview process. The other first-year eligibles are running back Chris Johnson, offensive lineman Jahri Evans, linebackers NaVorro Bowman and James Harrison; defensive back Kam Chancellor and punter Shane Lechler. The list will be reduced to 25 semifinalists in November and to 15 finalists in January before the selection committee discusses and chooses the class of 2023 that will be enshrined in August. No. 20 Florida has failed to throw a touchdown through three games. That makes the Gators just one of three Football Bowl Subdivision teams without a touchdown. It’s the kind of early season passing ineptitude not witnessed from the Southeastern Conference program in more than four decades. Kentucky coach Kyra Elzy says freshman Tionna Herron is recovering from open-heart surgery to correct a structural abnormality. The 6-foot-4 post player learned of her condition after arriving at school in June and received other opinions before surgery was recommended. Herron underwent surgery Aug. 24 in Houston and is recovering at home in DeSoto, Texas. She is expected back on campus next month to continue rehabilitation until she is cleared to return to normal activity. Herron was rated as a four-star prospect and top-70 player when she signed with Kentucky last November. The College Football Playoff is built to expand. While only three games determine a champion, the current postseason format is seven games: Two semifinals, a championship game and four marquee bowls. To convert a four-team playoff into 12 requires four more games and about three more weeks. Expanding for the 2024 and ’25 seasons largely hinges upon whether the already-scheduled semifinals and championship game can be pushed back. The NFL schedule will play a big role, too. College football fans should be prepared to watch playoff games on weeknights. Defenseman P.K. Subban has announced his retirement from the NHL following 13 seasons. The 33-year-old former Norris Trophy winner shared the news on social media Tuesday. Subban registered 115 goals and 467 points in 824 regular-season games. He added 18 goals and 44 assists in 96 postseason games. He won the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman in 2013 with the Montreal Canadiens. Subban also played for the Nashville Predators and New Jersey Devils. He was an unrestricted free agent this summer. Buffalo Bills cornerback Dane Jackson was released from the hospital after tests revealed he sustained no major injury to his neck or spinal cord when he was struck by a teammate. The Bills did not provide any other details of the extent of Jackson’s injury except to say he was undergoing further evaluation. Jackson was hurt late in the second quarter in the game against the Titans when he tackled receiver Treylon Burks from behind following a 12-yard catch. Jackson was laying on Burks’ back when linebacker Tremaine Edmunds dived in late and struck his teammate directly in the helmet. The company also announced the launch of a metaverse fund focused on rich Asian clients in April. Other global financial services companies that have forayed into the metaverse include JP Morgan, which became the first bank to open a virtual lounge in the metaverse in February, while Fidelity Investment launched metaverse experiences to onboard young investors. The company had previously launched a thematic metaverse ETF. Africarare is a web3 company focused on unlocking the African potential to the world by taking advantage of the latest advances in the digital economy. Its metaverse platform Ubuntuland currently hosts some of the leading companies in the continent including MTN, World Data Lab, and M&C Saatchi Abel. On the other hand, Mic Mann, co-founder and chief executive officer of Africarare commented: “We are thrilled to welcome Nedbank into Ubuntuland and look forward to creating positive change with them. By entering the metaverse, this organisation will pave the way for new solutions for Africa and play a role in the future of banking in this exciting world.” Stay up to date: Google News Twitter Telegram LinkedIn Facebook TikTok

Analysis | The Trailer: Five Big Things This Year’s Primaries Told Us – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/analysis-the-trailer-five-big-things-this-years-primaries-told-us-the-washington-post/ In this edition: What we learned from the midterm primaries, what’s showing up in campaign ads since Labor Day, and questions and answers with some of the people we’ve been checking in with on the trail. This is the final edition of The Trailer. We’ve been delivering campaign news from across the country for four full years — a whole presidential term! — and hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did. We couldn’t have done it without the sharp editing of Terri Rupar, Cathy Decker, Vanessa Williams and Sean Sullivan. Thank you for reading, and au revoir. We’ll see you again. To stay up to date on politics, the midterms and 2024, sign up for The 5-Minute Fix, a newsletter from The Washington Post’s Amber Phillips. Primary season is over. The general election tickets are set. And the voters who picked this year’s candidates set up dozens of competitive races, many in congressional districts brand new for the cycle — and a few probably harder for Republicans than they needed to be. Our colleagues at The Washington Post will cover every angle of this election from here. But what did the primaries end up telling us? Five big things. Democrats mostly got the candidates they wanted in swing-seat races. There were setbacks, like an ill-fated investment in a crypto-backed newcomer in Oregon. There were controversies, especially when Democratic committees spent to get far-right, “stop the steal”-minded Republicans through their primaries, viewing them as easier to defeat in November. But in the big picture, Democrats headed toward the midterms with the candidates favored by the national party leadership. The one notable exception: Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-Ore.), who was abandoned by local Democratic parties before he lost to challenger Jamie McLeod-Skinner. But national Democrats ignored his race, and the main party committees, entering the cycle after scrapping a “blacklist” against consultants who worked with challengers, stayed out of primaries as other groups got to meddling. It was the same story in Senate races, where the closest anything got to a fracas was the primary in Pennsylvania. Lt. Gov. John Fetterman got in early, held a lead in public polls, and never gave it up, though early polling for Rep. Conor Lamb (D) showed a potentially close contest. If there was ever a race for Republicans or outside groups to interfere in, and weaken the eventual nominee, that was it; the Collective PAC, which supports Black candidates, hit Fetterman out of the gate with an ad buy focused on an incident when, with a shotgun in hand, he stopped an unarmed Black jogger But the electability-focused Democratic electorate was convinced that Fetterman’s unique profile would be an asset, and even some middling debate performances didn’t stop him from sweeping every county in the May primary. In Wisconsin, where rivals to Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes (D) spent millions portraying themselves as more electable, every credible challenger folded up his or her campaign before the primary. The same thing happened in North Carolina and Florida, minus the wasted millions; North Carolina state Sen. Jeff Jackson quit his race and ran for a House seat, while Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.) opted not to challenge Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.). There was more competition in the races for state office, with primaries in Hawaii, Oregon and Florida that got rough in the final weeks. But in federal races, even when enthusiasm about the Biden administration was lowest, Democrats were largely able to avoid pricey challenges and pile up money for November. Republicans wanted a diverse candidate class, and they got it. Whether they win control of the House, Republicans have a candidate roster with more racial and gender diversity than ever. That’s the fruit of a multiyear, multi-PAC effort to change who wins nominations, including a recruiting effort by party leaders and interventions from members like Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), who closed out primary season with a boost for New Hampshire conservative Karoline Leavitt last week. In the 74 seats targeted by the National Republican Congressional Committee, ranging from newly gerrymandered Trump districts to places President Biden won by 20 points, 25 of the party’s nominees are not White men. In Texas, Wesley Hunt is all but certain to become the state’s first Black Republican congressman; in Michigan, John James could add to the ranks of Black Republicans in the House, while the state sends no Black Democrats to Washington at all. The other Black GOP nominee in Michigan is John Gibbs, who defeated Rep. Peter Meijer (R-Mich.) in a summer primary that focused on Meijer’s vote to impeach Trump in 2021 and his support for pro-LGBT legislation in the House. In Arkansas, where the Democratic Party has stopped fielding competitive statewide campaigns, Republicans are likely to elect Sarah Sanders as governor and Attorney Gen. Leslie Rutledge as lieutenant governor — the first time anywhere in the country both roles would be held concurrently by women. Turnout was mostly high for a midterm, especially in MAGA country. It’s always tricky to make a year-to-year voter turnout comparison. Some states that have competitive races one cycle don’t have them the next; some open seats with expensive primaries in one year have sleepy, no-challenger races in another year. But the pattern is clear: Voter turnout was comparable to the high-turnout 2018 primaries, and reliably higher in places where there’s been a lot of partisan turnover since 2016. That was clear very early in the cycle, when nearly 1.1 million votes were cast in Ohio’s GOP primary for U.S. Senate, and for the first time in a primary, Republican voting outpaced Democratic voting in the Mahoning Valley. In Mahoning County itself, where 11,554 GOP votes were cast in the 2018 primary, 20,484 GOP votes were cast this year, compared to 15,998 for Democrats. In Ohio, voters don’t register by party; their partisanship is determined by which primary they choose to vote in. Republicans had strong turnout in a number of places with those rules, like South Texas. For much of the year, they were also building an advantage, or taking advantage of Democratic decline, in states with partisan voter registration. Look at two of the biggest swing states. In November 2020, according to Pennsylvania’s registration report, nearly 4.2 million voters there were registered as Democrats, 3.5 million were registered as Republicans, and 1.3 million were registered with a third party or no party. By May, before the primary, Democrats had declined by 228,452; Republicans had declined by 92,781; and the rest of the electorate had declined by 31,296. At the end of 2021, Florida Republicans wiped out the Democrats’ traditional registration advantage, and by this summer, the GOP had a more than 200,000-registration advantage over Democrats. Mixed record for Trump-backed candidates. Sure, the former president has a winning record overall — and he’ll be the first to tell you about it. According to NPR, which helpfully tracked every Trump endorsement, Trump-backed Republicans won in 41 of 45 open seats, and just one Trump-endorsed incumbent lost. And the defeat of North Carolina Rep. Madison Cawthorn had more to do with the freshman’s own callow behavior, and the enemies he made by making up smears against his colleagues, than with anything Trump did. Most of those races were pretty easy for Trumpworld, and the leader of the Republican Party didn’t take many risks. He sat out New Hampshire’s primaries, even after near miss U.S. Senate primary loser Chuck Morse met with him personally. He endorsed both candidates named “Eric” in Missouri’s U.S. Senate primary, claiming credit when Attorney Gen. Eric Schmitt defeated ex-Gov. Eric Greitens. (This was easy, because both were eager to give him credit.) Trump’s early, on-record opposition to the Republicans who voted to impeach him after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob helped defeat most of them, and the only two (of 10) who’ll be on a ballot in November ran in states with top-two primaries, where they only needed to place second in a race with every candidate of every party to make a runoff. Where did Trump lose? His support wasn’t enough to carry weak GOP nominees who were opposed by local party leaders — most notably in Georgia, where the ex-president’s frustration at a near-sweep for Gov. Brian Kemp and his allies led to him bragging about helping the nominee for lieutenant governor win his primary. (No offense to lieutenant governors, but it was genuinely odd to hear Trump talk about this when he was campaigning in Wyoming.) Where there was a strong local GOP disagreeing with Trump, it could hold him off. Where there wasn’t — think of Illinois and Maryland — Trump’s endorsement could anoint whoever he wanted. Big spending chipped away at the Democratic Party’s left. In 2018 and 2020, multiple incumbent Democrats were ousted by candidates running to their left, helped by the infrastructure built after Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) first ran for president. In 2022, that only happened once, in Oregon, with Jamie McLeod-Skinner. Across the country, the left lost as much as it gained. Two incumbents backed by liberal groups, Rep. Marie Newman (D-Ill.) and Rep. Andy Levin (D-Mich.), lost races against colleagues after redistricting packed them into the same seats. In 2023, the winners of those races will be working with Democrats who ran left — Greg Casar in Texas, Summer Lee in Pennsylvania, and Delia Ramirez in Illinois. But the left had bigger ambitions, and was repeatedly stopped by campaign spending it struggled to respond to, typically from AIPAC’s new United Democracy PAC or the Democratic Majority...

Nevis Island Golden Rock Inn And Four Seasons Nevis Review Cosmopolitan
Nevis Island Golden Rock Inn And Four Seasons Nevis Review Cosmopolitan
Nevis Island — Golden Rock Inn And Four Seasons Nevis Review – Cosmopolitan https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/nevis-island-golden-rock-inn-and-four-seasons-nevis-review-cosmopolitan/ Courtesy of Golden Rock Inn Juuust about a three-hour flight from Miami, there are a pair of volcanic islands that make up the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis that are kinda the best-kept secret in the Caribbean. So when the opportunity to travel to Nevis (the smaller of the two islands) hit my inbox a few months ago, I was intrigued. And when I saw where I’d be staying—the quaint, adorable Golden Rock Inn boutique hotel for the first part of the trip and the legendary Four Seasons Resort Nevis, West Indies for the second, I quickly RSVP’d. Before I help ya plan your trip to paradise during this installment of Cosmo’s Must-Visit List, here’s the lowdown on Nevis: Much like surrounding vacation spots (think: Turks & Caicos, St. Barts, or The Bahamas), it has everything from white sandy beaches, clear blue waters, opportunities for both relaxation and adventure, and a life-is-good spirit that’s so quintessentially Caribbean. But unlike other islands in the area, the major plus is that Nevis has remained relatively hidden and is not at all flooded with tourists. In fact, it feels a little like an exclusive private island…which is probably why it was a fave spot of Princess Diana’s (!!). Long story short, Nevis is a high-key treasure to uncover, and I’m about to let you in on *the* best adventure hotspots ~spas under the stars~, and all the food and cocktails you gotta try, from the sweet rum to the spicy seafood. Keep reading for everything you need to know before planning a trip to this magical little island. (FYI: The writer’s accommodations, meals, and some scheduled activities were comped in order to write this review.) Stay Golden Rock Inn: This 11-room property (a former sugar mill, btw) is tucked away in the mountains of Nevis and owned by renowned New York artists Brice and Helen Marden. With the help of architect Ed Tuttle, the couple managed to bridge their passion for art and design with an appreciation and respect for nature. The result is a colorful and whimsical hotel that’ll make you feel like you’re totally immersed in the jungle, thanks in part to the 40-acre garden that’s home to monkeys, hummingbirds, small reptiles, and more than 50 species of palms. I mean, I caught absolutely delish fresh mangoes straight from a tree. I also had a few other unforgettable experiences that gave me a chance to unleash my inner nature girl (more on that later) during my time at Golden Rock Inn. Courtesy of Hanna Flanagan Courtesy of Golden Rock Inn The Four Seasons: After spending a few days exploring the mountains, I packed up my bags, kissed the idyllic Golden Rock Inn scenery goodbye, and checked into the Four Seasons oceanfront resort for some serious R&R—10/10 would recommend, let me tell ya. It was love at first sight when I opened the doors to my suite, which had *stunning* ocean views, one of those beds that practically begs you to take an afternoon nap, and the bubble bath-worthy tub of my dreams. Although I have to admit, I was sold the second I entered the lobby, which features an open design and a breathtakingly beautiful view of an infinity pool overlooking the ocean (and because we’re talking about the Four Seasons, there’s not just one pool, there’s three!). Additional amenities include a full spa, golf course, tennis courts, pool cabanas, beach hammocks, floating dock bar, water sports, three restaurants, and so much more. Courtesy of Four Seasons Nevis Courtesy of Hanna Flanagan Play Hike to Nevis Peak: It was physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting—and practically a straight climb up the muddy mountain—but the overwhelming sense of accomplishment I felt after finally reaching the top was so worth the pain and three days of soreness. So, this might be a hot take, but the grueling Nevis Peak hike was actually a real highlight for me. (If that doesn’t convince you, the hotel can hook you up with a much less strenuous two-hour hike instead.) Other popular adventure-filled excursions at Golden Rock Inn include snorkeling, fishing, mountain biking, ATV tours, and horseback riding. Courtesy of Hanna Flanagan Rum tasting at the Four Seasons: During the class, you’ll enjoy some delicious spirits (no, seriously—I usually am not a dark liquor fan but I drank every single one) from around the world while learning about the rich history of rum in Nevis and the rest of the Caribbean with the resort’s master mixologist and overall good time gal, Kendie Williams. Spa Under the Stars: Another must-do—and worth-the-splurge—activity at the Four Seasons is their Spa Under the Stars experience where you’ll have the entire outdoor spa to yourself. The romantic and peaceful night includes a volcanic stone whirlpool, a Japanese-inspired cold plunge pool and Sala Deck (aka a chill outdoor area), a Nevisian Massage around the garden pool, and a candle-lit dinner. If you decide to book Spa Under the Stars with your partner (or potential partner ), I can almost guarantee that it’ll be one of the most romantic nights of your life. Explore the island’s history: You’ll be delighted to learn that Founding Father of the United States—and the inspo behind that kinda popular Lin Manuel Miranda musical—Alexander Hamilton was born on the island of Nevis and lived there until he was about seven years old. (Is “dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean” ringing a bell for anyone?!). Anyway, the island preserved his childhood home and turned it into a must-see historic site called the Museum of Nevis History in the capital city of Charlestown. When you have some free time during your trip, I highly recommend paying it a visit! This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site. Eat The Rocks at Golden Rock Inn: It’s known for serving up bright and bold traditional Caribbean food with a global flare. You can’t go wrong with the crab cakes, spicy lobster tail, or green curry shrimp with coconut lemon grass, but my fave item on the menu was the chunky conch chowder. Courtesy of Golden Rock Inn A variety of Four Seasons dining experiences: Meanwhile, over at the Four Seasons, you’ll get to choose between Caribbean cuisine at Mango, locally-sourced Caribbean food and American bar food at On The Dune, and a Mediterranean menu at Esquilina, in addition to poolside bites and room service. As for drinks, expect rum, rum, and more rum. No matter where you go on the island, you better believe sweet and refreshing rum punches will be f-l-o-w-i-n-g. This content is imported from Instagram. Passion, located in Cox Village near the Botanical Gardens of Nevis, is an off-site spot you must check out for authentic and fresh Caribbean cuisine. Dairy Products May Prevent Type 2 Diabetes, Processed Meats Raise Risk – Medical News Today https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/dairy-products-may-prevent-type-2-diabetes-processed-meats-raise-risk-medical-news-today/ A new study links dairy products with a reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes and red and processed meats with a higher risk. Wanwisa Hernandez/EyeEm/Getty Images About 90–95% of all diagnosed diabetes cases are type 2 diabetes, according to the CDC. A new meta-analysis links low fat dairy products with a reduced risk of developing T2D. The study correlated red and processed meats with a greater T2D risk while finding suitable protein alternatives in fish and eggs. Other experts have said that T2D may be a reversible condition through diet and lifestyle interventions. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated — 37 million Americans — live with diabetes, and over 1 in 3 people have prediabetes. Type 2 diabetes (T2D), the most prevalent form of diabetes, develops when the body becomes resistant to the insulin the pancreas produces or when the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood glucose levels. Diabetes can increase the risk of health complications, including cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, stroke, blindness, and circulatory issues, which could necessitate the amputation of toes, feet, or a part of the leg. In a new study, researchers at the University of Naples Federico II in Naples, Italy, have gathered evidence showing that certain foods can cut the risk of T2D onset. Annalisa Giosuè, Ph.D., of the institution’s Department of Clinical Medicine, spearheaded an extensive investigation to explore the relationship between different animal-based foods and the condition. Giosuè presented her team’s findings at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) conference in September. Current for T2D prevention recommend limited intake of most animal products. However, research suggests that certain animal products might offer health benefits for lowering T2D risk. Type 2 diabetes is one of the major causes of diet-related death worldwide. Learning more about how different dietary components increase or decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes is key to its prevention,” Dr. Giosuè told Medical News Today. To that end, Giosuè and colleagues examined 13 existing meta-analyses that studied which foods were linked to increased risk of T2D. They said that this type of “review of reviews” pulls together one of the most comprehensive levels of evidence possible in medical research. The 13 meta-analyses provided estimates of how 12 different animal-based foods may elevate or lower the risk of developing T2D. Categories included: total meat red meat white meat processed meat total dairy full-fat dairy low fat dairy fish milk cheese yogurt eggs Daily consumption of 100 grams (3.53 ounces) of total meat was associated with a 20% higher risk. The same amount of red meat was associated with a 22% increase in risk. Half that amount of processed meats, such as deli meat, bacon, and sausages, may have contributed to a 30% increase in T2D risk. MNT asked Dr. Giosuè why red and processed meats affect how the body processes blood sugar: “Meat, particularly red and processed meats, is a relevant source of saturated fatty acids, cholesterol, advanced [glycation end] products, and heme [animal-derived] iron, which are known to promote chronic subclinical inflammation and impair insulin sensitivity — the capacity of the cells to properly respond to insulin stimulation by absorbing glucose from the blood, thus lowering glycemic levels.” Giosuè further explained that sodium, nitrates, and nitrites in processed meats might “not only damage insulin-producing pancreatic cells but also induce oxidative stress and vascular dysfunction, which, in turn, [reduce] the sensitivity of the cells to insulin.” On the other hand, 50 g (1.76 oz) of white meat, which includes chicken and turkey, corresponded with only a 4% higher T2D risk. Dr. Giosuè said she believes this is because this meat has less fat, a healthier fatty acid profile, and less animal-derived iron. Dr. Giosuè and her team found that dairy foods might offer protection against T2D or have no effect on its onset. Consumption of 200 g (almost 1 cup) of milk was associated with a 10% lower risk of T2D, and 100 g (3.52 oz) of yogurt correlated with a 6% risk reduction. A cup of total dairy and low fat dairy were each associated with a 5% and 3% reduced T2D risk, respectively. However, the meta-analyses showed that cheese and full-fat dairy had no effect on T2D risk. The quality of the evidence was low to moderate, though. During the interview with MNT, Dr. Giosuè mentioned several benefits of regularly eating dairy products: “Nutritionally speaking, dairy products are a source of nutrients, vitamins, and other components (namely calcium, proteins, peptides, etc.) with potential beneficial effects on glucose metabolism. For instance, whey protein in milk has a well-known effect on the modulation of the rise of glucose blood levels after meals, and also on the control of appetite and body weight.” “Protective effects in relation to body weight gain and obesity — drivers of type 2 diabetes development — have [also] been reported for probiotics, which can be found in yogurt, the other dairy item whose consumption is associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes,” she continued. Other low quality evidence suggested that neither daily 100 g servings of fish nor one egg per day impact T2D risk significantly. The current study adds credence that limiting or avoiding the consumption of animal-based foods, namely red and processed meat, can help prevent T2D. “Our findings on the most suitable intake of animal foods to prevent type 2 diabetes incidence are highly concordant with the features of the Mediterranean diet, which is the plant-based dietary pattern that has more consistently shown over time the potential to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.” – Annalisa Giosuè, Ph.D., lead researcher of the study Dr. Roy Taylor, a physician, author, professor, and director of Newcastle Magnetic Resonance Centre at Newcastle University in the U.K, not involved in the current study, argued in a September 2022 podcast that the wide availability of “cheaper” and more accessible processed foods is driving the spike in T2D cases. He was especially concerned about the increase in cases among children. T2D is considered a chronic condition, though there is evidence to suggest that it may be reversible through diet and lifestyle modifications, according to the American Diabetes Association. Numerous studies, including , have shown a link between consumption of ultra-processed foods and increased risk of T2D. Other research has shown that interventions like a low calorie diet, physical activity, or bariatric surgery may be effective for reversing T2D. While more research is needed to determine whether a mostly plant-based diet, such as the Mediterranean diet, could reverse T2D, a growing body of evidence shows that a Mediterranean-style diet may help prevent or delay the progression of the condition. The Italian researchers acknowledged that the 13 meta-analyses included inferior data in some cases. Thus, they are hesitant to offer “solid recommendations” for T2D prevention based on their study at this time. Nevertheless, Dr. Giosuè commented: “Our study gives further support to the belief that a plant-based dietary pattern including limited intakes of meat, moderate intakes of fish, eggs and full-fat dairy and the habitual consumption of yogurt, milk or low fat dairy, might represent the most feasible, sustainable and definitely successful population strategy to optimize the prevention of type 2 diabetes.”

Treasury Warns Against Russia’s Efforts To Evade Sanctions With Crypto – CNBC https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/treasury-warns-against-russias-efforts-to-evade-sanctions-with-crypto-cnbc/ Ether has hugely outperformed bitcoin since both cryptocurrencies formed a bottom in June 2022. Ether’s superior gains have come as investors anticipate a major upgrade to the ethereum blockchain called “the merge.” Yuriko Nakao | Getty Images Russian President Vladimir Putin could use cryptocurrencies to evade U.S. and other sanctions launched against the Kremlin for its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, a Treasury official told lawmakers Tuesday. “Yes, Senator, that’s possible,” said Elizabeth Rosenberg, Treasury’s Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing And Financial Crimes, said when Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., asked her if digital assets could be used to skirt sanctions. related investing news The Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs convened the hearing to discuss the next steps for deterrents against Russia’s continued aggression against Ukraine, such as the seizure of assets from Russian oligarchs and the G7 agreement to cap the price of Russian oil. Warren said she’d been concerned about the possibility of cryptocurrency being used by Russian elites to bypass sanctions since the country invaded in February. “Back then we already knew that countries like North Korea had used crypto to skirt sanctions and launder at least hundreds of millions of dollars. And Russia could easily be part of that,” Warren said. The Treasury Department has already identified Russian entities attempting to circumvent sanctions with crypto. Twenty-two individuals and two entities, including a neo-Nazi paramilitary group, were designated this month for helping Russia digitally finance the war on Ukraine. In April, the agency targeted a virtual currency mining agency for the first time, along with oligarch Konstantin Malofeyev, privately owned commercial bank Public Joint Stock Company Transkapitalbank and 40 other individuals and entities led by Malofeyev. Russia-based Darknet Market Hydra and Garantex, a virtual currency exchange, were also sanctioned that month partly to cut off avenues for potential sanctions evasion. The U.S. government blocked access to all of their assets based in the U.S. or that are held by someone who resides in the U.S. Treasury also blocked transactions between those who are sanctioned and with anyone within the U.S. But Russia planned ahead by developing its own digital currency as early as February in hopes of trading directly with countries that will accept the funds without first converting to dollars. The country also developed tools to mask the origins of transactions since crypto exchanges can be tracked on the underlying blockchain. Rosenberg confirmed that anonymity-enhancing technologies and other tools used to hide digital transactions can interfere with sanctions enforcement. Treasury issued its first-ever sanctions on these “mixers” in May and sanctioned another, “Tornado Cash,” in August. Warren mentioned that Coinbase, a leading U.S. cryptocurrency exchange platform, filed a lawsuit this month against the Treasury Department on behalf of Tornado Cash users. Coinbase’s chief legal officer, Paul Grewal, told CNBC that the sanctions set “a dangerous precedent,” but Rosenberg called them effective. “When they can serve as a deterrent to any criminal (who) would seek to use a mixer in order to launder their funds, the proceeds of corruption or any criminal activity, that’s an effective avenue that we can use in order to signal that we cannot tolerate money laundering,” Rosenberg said.

The Fed started a two-day meeting on Tuesday, with rate futures traders pricing in an 83% chance of a 75 basis-point hike and a 17% probability of a 100 bps of tightening. Short-term forces are driving demand for the dollar: the combination of weak risk sentiment, fears of global recession, a hawkish Fed, and the war in Ukraine,” said Vassili Serebriakov, FX strategist, at UBS in New York. “The dollar will turn lower once U.S. inflation peaks and global economy bottoms, but we’re not there yet,” he added. Also on Tuesday, Sweden’s central bank raised rates by a full percentage point. The rate hike by the Riksbank was larger than analysts had expected, causing the Swedish crown to briefly spike against the euro and dollar. read more But it failed to retain that strength. Two Decades, $1.4 Billion: Atkinson Completes I-5 Project : CEG – Construction Equipment Guide https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/two-decades-1-4-billion-atkinson-completes-i-5-project-ceg-construction-equipment-guide/ Atkinson Construction, along with the Washington Department of Transportation, recently completed the bulk of construction work for the $1.4 billion HOV project in Tacoma, Wash. (Photo courtesy of Washington Department of Transportation.) If it seemed like it was a long time coming, that’s because it was. After more than two decades and $1.4 billion in construction, the Washington Department of Transportation recently announced that the I-5 Portland Avenue to Port of Tacoma Road Southbound HOV project is now complete. A new section of the southbound HOV lane on I-5 from the Port of Tacoma Road, connecting to the westbound SR 16 HOV lane has now opened. “After 15 years of construction, this final Tacoma/Pierce County HOV Program project will complete HOV connectivity from SR 16 south of Tacoma to downtown Seattle,” Atkinson Construction said in a statement. The latest milestone concludes of a series of projects that are part of the Tacoma/Pierce County HOV Program that builds 320 mi. of HOV lanes on I-5, SR 16 and SR 167 in Pierce County, approximately 35 mi. south of Seattle. Atkinson Construction, based out of Renton, Wash., served as the general contractor for the massive project, a subsidiary of Maryland-based Clark Construction. Over the course of 22 years, numerous other construction companies had a hand in building the project. They included Bechtel, Hamilton Construction, Jacobs, Kiewit Pacific, Max J. Kuney Company, Mowat Construction, Skanska USA, Scarsella Bros., Tri-State Construction, Woodworth and Company and WSP USA. Crews punched the final checklist by restriping southbound I-5 from the King County line to the Port of Tacoma Road to finish opening the new southbound lane. Remaining items for Atkinson include levee protection along the Puyallup River; removing old I-5 bridge piers; rebuilding the SR 167 on-ramp to southbound I-5 and adding dedicated left turn lanes on Portland Avenue under I-5. New East L Street Bridge Opens As part of this project, crews replaced the East L Street bridge spanning I-5. The new bridge has wider lanes, wider sidewalks and has dedicated bike lanes in each direction. The East L Street bridge was removed and replaced to accommodate I-5 widening beneath it. Another highlight of the overall I-5 project was replacing the more than 60-year-old I-5 Puyallup River Bridge with a new bridge built to current seismic standards that is straighter and wider. Work on this $325 million section began in 2019. The southbound bridge included a 223-ft. girder that is the longest prestressed girder manufactured in the United States. In all, the bridge consists of nine spans and 84 girders. In addition to new HOV lanes, these projects include many other improvements: Safety: Additional merge lanes, wider shoulders, improved ramp alignments and curves and improved lighting; Traffic and Operations: Improved mobility due to additional capacity, better roadway alignments and the relocation of on-ramps and exits; Environment: Noise barriers at select locations to minimize traffic noise, enhance or expand nearby wetlands and improved methods to treat storm water runoff; Intelligent Transportation System (ITS): New closed-circuit traffic cameras, more electronic signs for traveler notifications, highway advisory radio broadcast transmitters and traffic data collectors. Each of these tools helps WSDOT better manage traffic and improve communication with the traveling public. Previous Phases of Project Construction activities for this massive project have ramped up over the last three years. Since 2019, aside from the addition of HOV lanes, crews have completed the following: Built a new southbound I-5 Puyallup River Bridge; Removed all but a few remaining pieces of the old northbound and southbound I-5 Puyallup River Bridge; Widened I-5; Replaced the East L Street Bridge; Added new auxiliary lanes; Installed enhanced lighting, stormwater collection and filtration improvements; and Replaced aging pavement. About the Project This project is part of the Tacoma/Pierce County HOV Program, a series of highway projects to provide operational improvements and high-occupancy-vehicle (HOV) lanes on Interstate 5, State Route 16 and State Route 167. Through Tacoma, heavy I-5 traffic creates frequent congestion. HOV lanes will help ensure that transit, vanpools and carpools move efficiently through the corridor, especially when traffic is congested in the adjacent general-purpose lanes. This reliability tends to increase ridership in multi-passenger vehicles and thereby helps ease demand in the general-purpose lanes, making the overall highway system work better for everyone. Project Construction Timeline February 2019 WSDOT executed a contract with Guy F. Atkinson Construction/Jacobs Engineering. Construction began. April 2019 Construction crews removed the East L Street overpass to allow Interstate 5 to be widened. February 2020 The first 54 bridge girders were installed on six of the nine bridge spans on the new southbound I-5 Puyallup River Bridge. January 2021 Crews installed the final 30 bridge girders on the last three spans of the new bridge June 2021 First travel lane opens on new southbound I-5 Puyallup River Bridge December 2021 Fifteen girders on the East L Street bridge installed over I-5. April 2022 All southbound I-5 travel lanes moved to new southbound I-5 Puyallup River Bridge. June 2022 Northbound I-5 from SR 16 to Port of Tacoma Road is moved to final alignment. New general purpose lane opens. August 2022 New HOV lanes open.

20 Superfoods To Consider Adding To Your Diet Tasting Table
20 Superfoods To Consider Adding To Your Diet Tasting Table
20 Superfoods To Consider Adding To Your Diet – Tasting Table https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/20-superfoods-to-consider-adding-to-your-diet-tasting-table/ New Africa/Shutterstock If the term superfood has you dreading a tasteless helping of bland diet food your mom swears is healthy, we’ve got really good news for you. As it turns out, many superfoods are incredibly tasty on their own — we’re looking at you, raspberries and avocados — and all of these foods can be prepared in a dish (or many dishes) guaranteed to knock your culinary socks off. But before we dig into how to enjoy the healthiest foods available to us on this gorgeous green Earth of ours (and one from the beautiful blue ocean), let’s distinguish exactly what a superfood is and where the heck that word came from. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, the first incarnation of the term most likely arrived as part of a marketing ploy to sell bananas in the early 1900s. That connection to advertising may be what leads people to question the idea that one food could be so inherently good for us that it deserves exultation to super status. However, Harvard continues with a modern-day definition via Merriam-Webster that assures us these superfoods are indeed “… rich in compounds (such as antioxidants, fiber, or fatty acids) considered beneficial to a person’s health.” Avocados Krasula/Shutterstock There’s no denying the appeal and popularity of the avocado, but it’s not only supremely delicious, but it’s also very good for you. The Dan Abram Healthy Living Center reports, via the Mayo Clinic, that avocados are packed with vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, monounsaturated fat, and fiber. That’s a lot for one piece of fruit! Furthermore, healthy fats increase our body’s ability to absorb vitamins A, D, E, and K. For this reason, the center recommends pairing avocados with fruits and vegetables high in those vitamins, like spinach, for example. Western Missouri Medical Center adds that avocados lower LDL, or bad, cholesterol. This fruit is so healthy that new research may have you eating an avocado every day, which should be easy enough to accomplish given the slew of quick and easy avocado recipes that are available. Beans Studio Roux/Shutterstock Are humble beans really considered superfoods? We say you should regard them as such. Per the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, it’s a combination of high protein content, antioxidant polyphenols, fiber, potassium, folate, iron, and more that really boost beans into stratospheric status. U.S. News and World Report offer plenty of reasons to eat more beans, claiming it’s not just that beans are healthy for the body; but that the food group is also affordable (costing less than a dime per serving), easy to use in a slew of recipes (Cuban black beans anyone?), and highly available to the general public in either dried or canned forms. The news outlet notes that the prebiotics in beans can help heal our gut microbiome, while the fiber allows us to cut down on snacks between meals by making us feel satiated for longer periods of time. Beets nblx/Shutterstock Earthy, pungent, bulbous beets will stain your hands red when you work with the roots on the cutting board and boost your health when you swallow them at mealtime. Beets contain betaine, known to improve liver and kidney function, and folic acid, which plays an important role in reducing the risk of cancer and some congenital disabilities, but heart attacks as well. Los Angeles Times further notes that beets are thought to help with blood circulation, so much so that the basketball team at USC drinks beet juice before workouts in the hopes of bolstering athleticism. For opposite culinary experiences, why not go for a raw beet slaw recipe followed by roasted beets? And if you’re still in the mood for more powerful reds on your plate at the end of the meal, we dare you to give these chocolate, orange, and beet brownies a try for dessert. Blueberries Skrypnykov Dmytro/Shutterstock The “superfood for your heart” is the nickname given to blueberries by Everyday Health. With sizeable percentages of the recommended daily intakes of vitamins C and K, fiber, and manganese, the outlet explains that the delightfully sweet little berries keep our hearts strong by managing cholesterol and blood sugar. From their sweet berry taste to their health benefits and versatility in the kitchen, pretty much everything about blueberries is great. And did you know there are at least 15 types of blueberries? Opportunities for culinary creations highlighting the dazzling blue pearls abound. Add these berries to a banana muffin recipe, or, if you’re feeling gutsy, try to make this old-fashioned blueberry buckle recipe, which combines every different aspect of a cobbler, a crumble, and a crisp into one delightful treat. Coconuts Xan/Shutterstock Anyone who has tried the ketogenic diet is probably quite familiar with the nutritional benefits of coconuts. Per Ketogenic.com, coconut is one of the only fruits allowed on the diet because it is low in carbs yet high in healthy fats. The bulk of these fats come in the form of medium chain triglycerides, known as MCTs. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, the human body absorbs and burns through MCTs much faster than other sources of fat. This would suggest that coconuts are great for simultaneously boosting metabolism function and energy, though more research is needed. Coconuts are often consumed in the form of oil, cream, milk, or water, but the flesh is edible as a whole food as well. If you’re wondering if a coconut is a fruit or a nut, the answer is both and then some; the botanically unusual specimen can also be considered a seed (via the Library of Congress). Cruciferous vegetables SewCream/Shutterstock Within the cruciferous vegetable category you’ll find broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower among a few others. The Mayo Clinic Health System touts that this food family is healthy to eat not just because it’s made up of vegetables, but because many edible members contain sulforaphane, an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phytochemical that has been proven to prevent various forms of cancer. The clinic adds that sulforaphane can help treat cancer in those who are already sick; it can also reduce symptoms of depression, aid heart health, and even help us manage pain. Iowa State University notes the unique and pungent flavors of various cruciferous vegetable, but hones in on cauliflower in particular. The university suggests thickly-sliced roasted cauliflower steaks or a pureed cream sauce as a great way to consume these veggies. And, of course, there are a ton of broccoli recipes for the whole family to choose from. Eggs ANEK SANGKAMANEE/Shutterstock Scrambled, hard-boiled, sunny side up, cooked into the perfectly folded layers of a delicious omelet — there’s no denying the incredible versatility of eggs. But would you believe us if we told you eggs are one of the most nutritious foods on the planet? Healthline suggests we think of it this way: One solitary egg contains within it every single nutrient needed to create a living, breathing, pecking-around-the-backyard-coop chicken. All of a sudden, it makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it? Nourish by WebMD lays to rest any lingering confusion over the cholesterol content of eggs by clarifying that scientists now understand it’s the saturated fat content of a food that negatively impacts blood cholesterol. So get cracking and get eating because these incredible powerhouses deliver on every level. Goji berries Dionisvera/Shutterstock Red diamond … the berry of happiness … the goji berry goes by a few dreamy names that seem to show off its prowess in the upper realms of super healthy foods, reports Foodaciously. Research from the journal of Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity points to protein, fiber, and vitamin A as some of the many nutrients provided by the tiny tart berries and claims it has been playing a part in Chinese medicine for hundreds of years. Similarly, the Polish Journal of Food and Nutrition Science adds that iron and vitamin C are also found in high concentrations. To add to the growing body of superfoods supporting research on goji berries, a study by the Journal of the American Academy of Optometry also links gojis to eye health. To add goji to your diet, Healthline suggests starting with a small quantity because the berry can occasionally trigger allergies. Once you know you’re good to go, simply eat the dried fruits on their own, sprinkle a handful over yogurt, or get creative and bake your dried berries into muffins. Kale Vezzani Photography/Shutterstock Kale is a member of the cruciferous family of vegetables, but it’s such a wildly popular superfood we figure it deserves its own special mention. In fact, kale is so beloved that chef Gordon Ramsay has admitted to preferring kale chips over chocolate. Sound crazy? Maybe not. According to David Perlmutter, MD, a board-certified neurologist and Fellow of the American College of Nutrition, kale holds a spot at the top of the superfood pyramid thanks to a seemingly endless array of nutrients, including close to 700% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin K, more than 200% of the same for vitamin A, plus antioxidants, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, good fats, and, well, it just keeps going. Chocolate may be calling out to you, but if you want to give your body an intense amount of nutrition, you might want to fill up on kale chips first! Kefir marmi1/Shutterstock Per New Food Magazine, kefir is on the minds of scientists worldwide who wish to get the ancient fermented beverage into the mouths of as many people as possible. The outlet’s food writers report that among the many health benefits of kefir are better digestion and improved levels of blood glucose and pressure, all of which are due to a balanced relationship between micr...

Dolphins Week 3 Power Rankings Roundup Sports Illustrated
Dolphins Week 3 Power Rankings Roundup Sports Illustrated
Dolphins Week 3 Power Rankings Roundup – Sports Illustrated https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/dolphins-week-3-power-rankings-roundup-sports-illustrated/ The Miami Dolphins clearly have gained national respect. That’s what a 21-point fourth-quarter comeback victory against a quality team like the Baltimore Ravens will do for any team, particularly one that came into the season having a lot to prove. After beginning the season in the middle of the pack, the Dolphins now are a unanimous top 10 team. For a second consecutive week, the Dolphins were among the biggest movers in the national NFL power rankings after their 42-38 victory against the New England Patriots, moving up an average of a bit more than six spots based on our survey of rankings of 10 national outlets — SI, CBS Sports, NFL.com, The Athletic, The Sporting News, The Ringer, Pro Football Network, ESPN, Yahoo, and Pro Football Talk. The highest ranking the Dolphins got was 5th (it was only 11th last week), while the lowest was 8th (it was 16th heading into Week 2). Here’s the breakdown of the Dolphins’ 10 power rankings spots, along with the commentary associated with it: CBS Sports Ranking: 8 Previous: 12 Analysis: They are 2-0 and one of the early-season stories of this season. It becomes a much bigger story if they beat the Bills this week. NFL.com Ranking: 8 Previous: 13 Analysis: Members of TuAnon! Step out of the shadows of the dark web and be counted! Your hero has delivered! Tua Tagovailoa put up an historic performance on Sunday in Baltimore, throwing for 469 yards and six touchdowns in an epic comeback victory over the Ravens. Tua was unconscious in the game’s fourth quarter, throwing four of his scores in the final period, including the game-winner to Jaylen Waddle with less than a minute to play. This was the proof-of-concept game for first-year coach Mike McDaniel, who has an offense that can deliver in a shootout. Tua will need to stack quality games to prove he’s the guy, but this was nothing less than a clarion call to the believers. The Athletic Ranking: 6 Previous: 8 Analysis: Trailing 35-14, the Dolphins scored touchdowns on all four of their fourth-quarter drives in securing the most explosive of the three crazy, improbable comebacks in Week 2. In the fourth quarter alone, Tua Tagovailoa completed 13 of 17 passes for 199 yards and four touchdowns. Just for fun, let’s extrapolate that one-quarter performance over a 17-game season. That’d be 13,532 passing yards and 272 touchdown passes. Tough news for Peyton Manning, whose 2013 season gave us the current records of 5,477 passing yards and 55 touchdowns. Oh, and Tyreek Hill’s 149 fourth-quarter receiving yards would be good for 10,132 yards over the course of a season. Eat it, Calvin Johnson (1,964 receiving yards in 2012). Pro Football Talk Ranking: 6 Previous: 12 Analysis: TuAnon is going mainstream. Scroll to Continue Yahoo Sports Ranking: 6 Previous: 16 Analysis: Well then. Tua Tagovailoa deserves every bit of praise coming his way this week. His 469-yard, six-touchdown game should be a reminder that there should be some patience with quarterback development. Now that he has a coach that believes in him and Tyreek Hill to throw to after a pretty sharp trade, we could see a true breakout season from Tagovailoa. The first two games look pretty good. Sports Illustrated Ranking: 6 Previous: 16 Analysis: Why the hell not? There isn’t a team in the NFL having more fun than the Miami Dolphins right now. There isn’t a defensive coordinator who can quite put a thumb on Mike McDaniel. Pro Football Network Ranking: 5 Previous: 12 Analysis: It doesn’t matter how good or bad you or I believe Tua Tagovailoa is. All he must do is protect the football. All he must do is take away those two or three boneheaded decisions he makes a game. If he just lets the offense operate, they’ll move the ball consistently. Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle with the ball in their hands are as dangerous a duo as we’ve seen on the same roster. Meanwhile, the defense looked unable to stop anything for most of the game. But a strong defensive performance in the fourth quarter and an incredible offensive effort made all the difference in the game. Will Miami remain this high in the NFL Power Rankings? Only time will tell. Their offense proved today that they can be incredibly dangerous in spurts. ESPN Ranking: 5 Previous: 12 Analysis (on the biggest early adjustment (Get Raheem Mostert more touches): Chase Edmonds was Miami’s lead back in Week 1 and throughout the offseason as Mostert rehabbed from a left knee injury. But the former 49ers running back gained 47 yards on 10 carries Sunday in the Dolphins’ win over the Ravens, and it was the first time in months that Miami’s run game looked like it had some bite to it. Edmonds, while versatile and still deserving of a role, was ineffective against a mediocre Patriots run defense in Week 1; he broke off a 28-yard run on Miami’s game-winning drive Sunday, but Mostert should get his second start of the season against the Bills in Week 3 The Ringer Ranking: 8 Previous: 13 Analysis: The gaudy box score statistics (469 passing yards, six touchdowns) for Tua Tagovailoa in the Dolphins’ 21-point comeback win over Baltimore heavily inflate perception of his performance. Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald struggled to dial up pressure consistently, and the Ravens’ young, injury-ridden secondary allowed big plays on multiple blown coverages, including two fourth-quarter touchdowns to Tyreek Hill that Tagovailoa underthrew. And Miami head coach Mike McDaniel, along with perhaps the NFL’s most electric receiving duo in Hill and second-year standout Jaylen Waddle, just created so much easy offense for Tagovailoa—Hill and Waddle each averaged more than 3 yards of separation on 22 combined targets en route to 361 receiving yards and four scores, according to NFL’s Next Gen Stats. But that doesn’t mean Tagovailoa didn’t still put together the best performance of his young career. He threw two ugly interceptions and led another drive that netted just 2 yards in the first half, but he—surprisingly—didn’t collapse as a result. The Sporting News Ranking: 8 Previous: 13 Analysis: Mike McDaniel has proved every bit of his offensive genius in only two games operating with Tua Tagovailoa, Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill. He even got Chase Edmonds and Mike Gesicki involved with key plays. The Dolphins are living up to playoff sleeper expectations on one side but need to get more consistent defense to deliver on playoff promise. ————————————————————————— FOR EVEN MORE COVERAGE ON THE MIAMI DOLPHINS, CHECK OUT SPORTS ILLUSTRATED’S MIAMI DOLPHINS PAGE ON SI.COM.
