The Cordillera Huayhuash Of Northern Peru Is Jagged, Raw Beauty – Outside https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-cordillera-huayhuash-of-northern-peru-is-jagged-raw-beauty-outside/ A mule train ferries loads up past Jirishanca and Rondoy en route to our Camp 2. (Brian Irwin) “],”renderIntial”:true,”wordCount”:350}” The Cordillera Huayhuash is a remote, stand-alone cluster of mountains in Northern Peru containing seven peaks over 19,000 feet. This tight group of peaks is firmly off the radar of most international trekkers, many of whom opt for more popular, hence congested, hikes like those of Nepal’s Annapurna Circuit or the Torres Del Paine Circuit, in Patagonia. The latter offers a few appointed huts, while the Huayhuash is raw wilderness, with no huts. Darcie and I, from Maine and New Hampshire respectively, had opted for a six-day trip focused on the northern half of a large trekking circuit. Our variation, while over fifty miles and with four passes at 15,000 feet or higher, is doable in two weeks, door to door. (The full eighty-mile circuit is more difficult to accomplish for someone with limited vacation time.) This version is a selection of high points and the most scenic vantages of all. At even the first peek of the snow-white, toothy Huayhuash, Darcie said, “This is unlike anything I’ve ever seen.” I first heard of the Huayhuash Circuit, as it’s colloquially named, after seeing the 2003 film Touching the Void and subsequently reading the book of that name. In 1985, descending in a storm from the difficult first ascent of the west face of Siula Grande, a 20,800-foot peak here in the Huayhuash, Joe Simpson fell, breaking his knee. His partner, Simon Yates, doggedly managed to lower him on their rope almost all the way down the mountain. Yet as they neared the base, in the wind and whiteout conditions, Simpson was accidentally lowered over a cliff, reaching the end of the rope still in midair. Above, Yates was slowly being pulled from an insecure stance, requiring a decision: Cut the rope, or both die. Amazingly, both climbers survived, but Simpson, believed to be dead, crawled alone over five miles to camp, showing up five days later. Little did I know when reading the gripping story that nineteen years later I would camp beneath the peak myself. “],”renderIntial”:true,”wordCount”:350}” In July 2022, Darcie and I hired Gilf Laurente and Maruja Colonia, friends of mine from a 2008 expedition to Peru, as our guides and outfitters. Fourteen years ago they had outfitted my partner and me to climb a series of peaks, including Ischinca and Urus Este, in the more accessible Cordillera Blanca. That range hovers above the city of Huaraz, often referred to as “the Chamonix of South America.” At 10,000 feet, Huaraz is the jumping-off point for most treks and climbs in Peru’s Andes. Huaraz is an eight-hour drive north of Lima, the closest major airport. From Huaraz, most trailheads are within two to three hours, while the Huayhuash is another five hours north beyond those. That extra distance leads to a paucity of crowds. Any visitor to the Huayhuash or the Blanca should spend a day in Huaraz and another on an acclimatization hike there. We took those steps and then, like most who follow them, did well on the trek without suffering from altitude illness. I am a travel, family, and wilderness-medicine physician, and we were armed with all the requisite medications; we even had a “hospital horse” saddled with an oxygen tank in the event of a Covid strike, but never needed it. A short acclimatization hike outside of Huaraz (Brian Irwin) “],”renderIntial”:true,”wordCount”:350}” Darcie and I were the only clients on this trek, hiring our guide and staff for a private holiday. The price tag for our journey would be steep in other great ranges such as the Himalaya, but here it is quite affordable. Laurente and Colonia, a married couple, have been running their outfitting business, Colonia Adventures, for over twenty years. Colonia’s father was the first person to arrange guided treks and climbs in Peru. I learned of Colonia and Laurente in 2008 from a friend, Maury McKinney, then co-owner of a climbing school in New Hampshire. (Colonia and Laurente later named their son, now nineteen, Maury. That’s how much they treat you like family.) Darcie and I paid full freight, and, from wheels down in Lima until takeoff, the trek was $1,950 per person, all inclusive. If you opt for a bus instead of a private car from Lima to Huaraz, cut that in half. It felt like a small price to pay for excellent guiding in a region with rich culture and spectacular terrain. The peaks are raw and staggering in proportion, the glaciers azure, and the land stretches through this mountainscape to the horizon. The days are long; you hike 10-12 miles on average with mules carrying most of your load. A mule driver, cook and guide are the staff. The schedule was always the same. Wake at six a.m. to tea brought to you in your sleeping bag by the cook. Breakfast, which is typically omelets or the like, is at six-thirty. Hit the trail by seven to cross a high pass by noon. Trailside lunch, something like nicoise salad brought by the cook, as you take in the views. After another seven hours of trekking, you arrive at camp. Your tent is up, and so are the appetizers. Fried bread would precede Lomo Saltado, a traditional beef-and-vegetable Peruvian dinner. “],”renderIntial”:true,”wordCount”:350}” Huayhuash camps are scarce. There are no cairns, nor trail signs. So a guide is nice to have. It’s wild country, with gauchos and free-range livestock all around. Glaciers cling to giant faces, their sloughs sending roars up the valley. Heathered arms encircle flows of ice, as condors glide above. Laurente is far more than a guide. He’s a virtual naturalist. One of the few certified climbing guides in Peru, he runs a government-sponsored school to train other guides. Technical climbing skills are a requisite part of the training, but he has also developed a deeper curriculum, which takes four years to complete. The program requires fluency training in Quechua, the local language, as well as English, and knowledge of the flora and fauna of the region, as well as climatology and weather forecasting. This very doable trek might take in the most stunning alpine skyline I’ve ever seen, eclipsing those I’ve experienced in Patagonia, Alaska, and the Alps. The sight of jagged spires and pouring glaciers rewards you for each day’s effort. Each night you may be a mile or less from each glacial panorama, and the light of the sunrise and sunset illuminate the ice, making it glow to a warm, yet eerie, degree. We trekked during a new moon with perfect, cloudless weather. Each night, after all the others were asleep, I gazed at the celestial Southern Cross, almost believing it was just me and it. “],”renderIntial”:true,”wordCount”:350}” The most difficult part of the trek had been getting here. From my New Hampshire home, it’s a full three days of travel just to reach the trailhead. But once we arrived and got underway, we went a full three days without passing another trekker. Laurente would stop to point out medicinal plants, like Caramati, which relieves stomach pain, or Escozonera, which cures cough—all according to shamans. He shared his belief in the mountain gods, who allow us safe passage. Lore has it that the Northern Peruvian gods like sugar, so at each pass Laurente would press his hands together, silently thank the gods, and leave a piece of candy for them to enjoy. The first time he spoke of the gods was at our initial camp, on the shores of the aqua-colored Jahuacocha Lake. “Mother Earth made this land and protects it,” he said. “Father of the Mountains allows us to visit and enjoy. They deserve recognition. We owe them.” Seeing the grandeur of the peaks, I almost began to believe this range is the domain of a higher deity. Each time he prayed and gave thanks, I came closer. Over the week, we circled the entire northern half of the range. We’d cross through the paramo, or high grasslands, to keyhole passes with far vistas. Darcie, each time, would say, “Unbelievable. We’re so fortunate.” Camp, at night, just as the Southern Cross falls away (Brian Irwin) “],”renderIntial”:true,”wordCount”:350}” The weather was bluebird that week, a gift Laurente attributed to the gods watching out for us. We passed stone walls, some of them up to 800 years old, still used to corral sheep and livestock. Most mountain villagers are shepherds, and a stone wall never falls out of use. Laurente was raised a shepherd, by a shepherd, before transitioning to his current role. Our last pass before dropping down to Laguna Carhuacocha was our highest, at 15,800 feet, and brought the most stunning views yet. Four jagged spires, each over 19,000 feet, with tumbling glaciers, studded the skyline. The leftmost peak was Siula Grande. Looking at its hulking north face, one aspect around from the site of Simpson’s accident, Darcie sighed. “Can you believe he lived?” she asked. I took a sip of cold, clean water and recalled how Simpson nearly perished of thirst, surviving by slurping water from shallow mud puddles. Our discussion faded into silence as we gazed at Siula Grande and its taller neighboring peak Yerupaja. I saw Laurente scramble up a scree slope to our left. He returned a few minutes later and handed me a perfectly preserved fossil of a clam shell. He said, “Eighty million years ago this was all under the sea. Isn’t it amazing?” I fervently agreed, then asked, “Is that what you were doing up there, looking for fossils?” He chuckled. “No. I was praying to the mountain gods. And today, mi amigo, they rewarded us.” Darcie Reed soaks in the grandeur of Suila Grande. (Brian Irwin) “],”renderIntial”:true,”wordCount”:350}” If You Go Getting there: Fly to Lima. From there a number of companies offer luxury buses with hot meals that will take you eight hours to Huaraz....

Bring Millets Back In Your Kitchen For Healthy Living Says Millet Man Punjab News Express
Bring Millets Back In Your Kitchen For Healthy Living, Says Millet Man – Punjab News Express https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/bring-millets-back-in-your-kitchen-for-healthy-living-says-millet-man-punjab-news-express/ SHIMLA: Popularly known as the ‘Millet Man of India’, Khadar Vali called upon farmers, agriculture scientists and policy makers to promote millets in agriculture to save soil, water, environment and, above all, human health. “Let us bring millets back to our kitchen, make them an essential part of our staple diet pla, and say goodbye to the emerging health problems, ” he exhorted. Internationally acclaimed food and nutrition expert from Mysore, Vali delivered a special lecture on the role of millets in preventive health — Aahar Sey Arogya — at a one-day workshop-cum-Kisan Mela at Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni in Solan. The event was organised by the State Project Implementing Unit (SPIU) of Prakritik Kheti Khushhal Kisan Yojana (PK3Y) of Himachal Pradesh government. Over 200 farmers from Himachal Pradesh, who have adopted non-chemical, low-cost and climate resilient natural farming after the launch of PK3Y in 2018, participated in it along with PK3Y officials from the state, agriculture department officers, agriculture and horticulture scientists and students. Secretary Agriculture, Rakesh Kanwar, Vice Chancellor, Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Rajeshwar Singh Chandel, State Project Director, PK3Y, Naresh Thakur, Director, Agriculture, BR Takhi, and Umendra Dutt and Poonam Sharma from Kheti Virasat Mission also attended the workshop. The event set the tone for focus on millets in Himachal Pradesh ahead of ‘International Year of Millets-2023’ declared by the United Nations as it was followed by a meeting of the working group of agriculture experts of state to chalk out a strategy for promotion of millets in Himachal Pradesh. Vali advocated against growing and eating wheat and rice and asked the farmers to start cultivating the ‘forgotten food’ millets again. “The water required for rice and wheat crops in one year equates with water requirement of millets for 26-30 years. This single reason is good enough for scientists and farmers to have shifted to the cultivation of millets, ” he said. He said it is known that “if we want to save soil and check its degradation, we need to plant C4 grasses. Millets are C4 plants. But on one hand, we are trying to save soil, environment and water, and on the other hand, we are promoting C3 plants like wheat and rice, which are degrading and depleting them. How can we talk about biodiversity without millets?” The food and nutrition expert categorically held that the issue has been neglected by the Agriculture Corporate Food Factory Culture, who are controlling the food and food habits. Vali said that whether it is glucose imbalance, hormonal imbalance, microbes imbalance, the humans have been facing various health problems with each passing day due to the ‘economic model’ being followed by society. Vali said that he has done major work on millets, what he calls ‘Panch Ratna’, including Foxtail millets, Browntop millets, Little millets, Kodo millets and Barnyard millets. He said the barren lands could be rehabilitated with natural farming of millets. He said his experiments have shown that eating millets can not only help prevent diseases, but can help the patients manage better in the progressive diseases with improved indicators. “This is not a magic. It is a perfect science of millets, which are real foods for healthy living, ” he said. According to Vali, millets are the first domesticated grass and added that there is need for an awareness drive on the benefits of millets. Secretary Agriculture, Rakesh Kanwar said that the International Year of Millets 2023 is a great chance to make a beginning on millets. “A discussion at this workshop will help us in a paradigm shift in policy on agriculture, ” he said. He requested Vali to be mentor for the Millet Working Group in Himachal. Vice Chancellor of Nauni University, Rajeshwar Singh Chandel, said that the university will play its role significantly in the action plan to be prepared by the Working Group on millets for the state.

Benitez, who won the Champions League, FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup during his time in charge at Anfield from 2004 to 2010, became Everton boss in July 2021 but was sacked six months later after struggling to improve results and win over supporters. In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports News, the Spaniard said he does not regret taking over at Goodison Park but admits he struggled to make certain decisions because of his ties to Everton’s Merseyside rivals. It was very clear for us at the beginning. “I had a meeting with a head of one of the departments and I asked him ‘do you think everything is fine?’ He said ‘yeah, everything is perfect.’ I thought ‘£600m had been spent, it cannot be perfect when the owners aren’t happy and the fans are not happy.’ “So I realised we had to change things inside, but I couldn’t do it straight away because I was a former Red and it could be seen as ‘oh, he’s come in to change our club’. “In another club, I would have made those decisions. I did it in the past, because you know very clearly that is the way to improve, but there at Everton I couldn’t do it.” Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player FREE TO WATCH: Highlights of Everton against West Ham in the Premier League ‘Gordon beginning to fulfil potential’ One current Everton player Benitez knows well is Anthony Gordon. The winger was linked to a move to Chelsea in the summer, but the Toffees were adamant he was not for sale. Benitez believes Gordon, who has scored two goals in seven Premier League games this season, is now starting to fulfil his potential but admits he initially doubted the 21-year-old. “We played a friendly in Miami in pre-season and after 50 minutes, he couldn’t run,” Benitez said. “We knew he was a player with quality on the ball, could finish, pass and had pace. But he couldn’t run. We had a conversation with him after the game. It was hot, but he’s a young player. Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player We take a look at Anthony Gordon’s best bits from his time in the Premier League with Everton so far “I was talking with the coaches in the academy and my assistant and they said they weren’t sure. They knew he had the talent but maybe it was his mentality. “We spent time with him, but the main thing was to change his mentality and he was very keen to do it. He worked really hard, he improved his stamina and he got better and better because he had the potential. “He has to improve some parts of his game, he knows that. But I’m really pleased to see him progressing because he’s a nice lad.” Follow Everton with Sky Sports Follow every Everton game in the Premier League this season with our live blogs on the Sky Sports website and app, and watch match highlights for free shortly after full-time. Upskilling To Manage The IoT Expansion Times Of India
Upskilling To Manage The IoT Expansion Times Of India
Upskilling To Manage The IoT Expansion – Times Of India https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/upskilling-to-manage-the-iot-expansion-times-of-india/ IoT booming becoming a global megatrend, how can tech companies upskill their employees to be future-ready? Inspur’s IDC-commissioned 2021–2022 Global Computing Index Report documents how edge computing and cloud are being increasingly adopted by companies around the world. This has largely been propelled by the pandemic, which brought home the temporal nature of work and pushed more businesses to move past legacy tech and towards tactical digital upgrades. From learning how to coordinate meetings on Zoom to collaborating on big projects via Trello or Asana, the shift has been monumental— ‘moving to the cloud’ has become a near-expectation for success. Now, the IoT boom is close at hand —a world where physical and digital objects exchange information and build solutions. While all of this might seem intimidating for companies even behind on their digital growth journey, the answer—as often—lies within. We take a closer look. What can IoT and automation do for tech teams? IoT essentially refers to the interconnectedness of an increasingly automated world. Gadgets feed into gadgets, which deliver real-time data to central decision-making agencies. Fitness watch data feeding into the smartphone is a simple example of this. At an industrial level, hundreds and even thousands of machines and products work synchronously to deliver insights, identify opportunities, and enhance business outcomes. Take buildings, for instance. Fifty years ago, no one would have thought building temperatures could be controlled by sensors linked to a remote dashboard. Modern building tech, however, allows managers to optimise temperature, lighting, and air quality down to the smallest degree, thus leading to considerable energy savings and optimal indoor conditions for productivity. At one level, IoT and automation liberate employees from the monotony of routine tasks. A machine can do them faster and better, while human employees can focus on more creative and strategic tasks. IoT, however, isn’t merely about routine jobs becoming redundant. For starters, managing an IoT ecosystem calls for a team of highly trained and industry-savvy professionals who can unlock the full potential of IoT for their company’s specific needs. Data analytics, machine learning, user-experience design, and even robotics are among the skills most coveted by every tech company. With a team of experts in these fields, even a small brand can develop core products and cutting-edge solutions that truly make a difference, rather than integrating IoT and automation for the mere ‘cool’ factor. And as IT and OT— formerly disparate teams—converge increasingly as IoT grows, the very definition of a tech job is likely to change. The question that often follows, though, is what becomes of the existing tech team when these new skills displace more traditional coding/programming ones. Job insecurity has gone up post-pandemic on account of widespread layoffs, which is exacerbated by the increased push towards automation. However, workforces can upskill and grow with their companies. Why is upskilling the key? Simply put, upskilling refers to the process of deepening and expanding one’s job-related expertise to develop faster along a career path or take on new opportunities. It involves taking on projects or completing courses that impart relevant skills for growth within one’s company. While employees can upskill themselves if they wish to, structured upskilling opportunities within an organisation make it much easier and more accessible to everyone. The company can create its own internal upskilling resources for each job description and level, or even fund external learning pathways. Given how dynamic technology is today, keeping abreast of and becoming adept at developing tech is vital for companies to stay relevant. This calls for teams to stay staffed with intelligent thinkers and tech-forward creators. While attracting new talent is one way to achieve this, it isn’t the only way. In fact, hiring new professionals from scratch could become time-consuming and expensive. Also, recruitment processes may tend to prioritise younger candidates who may be tech-savvy but don’t have the perspective and experience that older workers carry with them. Further, building a multigenerational workforce is a big part of diversity, which is why upskilling is so important for long-standing team members. Moreover, this way, employees don’t need to feel anxious about ‘becoming redundant’—they know the company has their back and will help them grow as needed. The result? A more dynamic and more motivated team whose members are all ready to do their best for the company! Final words Industry 4.0 is here, and companies that wish to ride the wave will need to equip their IT teams accordingly. Regardless of how technology evolves, however, the core tenet of good business remains the same—providing customers with better solutions to the problems they encounter every day. By investing in upskilling their employees, companies get to retain their valued staff while developing the talent needed to make the most of innovations including but not limited to IoT. Upskilling, in that sense, is a continuous process that offers tech-agnostic dividends—loyalty, productivity, agility, and ultimately business resilience. 16% Of Americans Have Invested, Traded Or Used Cryptocurrency – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/16-of-americans-have-invested-traded-or-used-cryptocurrency-cryptonews/ Source: AdobeStock / Antonio Gravante A study conducted by Pew Research Center, a Washington DC-based non-partisan think tank, has found that approximately 16% of American adults have invested in, traded, or used cryptocurrency. In its report, Pew Research highlighted that the crypto market turmoil has taken its toll on this demographic. About 46% of these crypto users reported that their investment has performed worse than they expected.  Only about 15% said their investment had exceeded expectations, while 31% just about broke even and 8% said they were unsure of the performance of their crypto portfolio.  The major reasons crypto users cited for making their investments include investment diversification, as well as the fact that crypto is an easier asset class to invest in and has low barriers to entry.  The survey found that a similarly low percentage of Americans – 2% – had invested in non-fungible tokens (NFTs). This is out of 49% of survey participants that had heard about the digital properties.  Pew Research noted that the statistics, tellingly, show that the U.S. crypto market has failed to record any significant increase in investors since 2021 despite increased media attention to the asset class.  “…the overall share of U.S. adults who have ever invested in, traded or used a cryptocurrency (also referred to as “crypto users” in this analysis) is unchanged since September 2021. This lack of overall change comes despite strong attention to crypto in the news,” the report said.   This is in reference to a similar survey published back in November 2021 where it also found that 16% of U.S. adults had invested in, traded, or used cryptocurrencies.  U.S. lags behind other countries in crypto uptake While the U.S. is a hotspot for crypto companies with over 1,800 crypto companies and over 2,200 founders according to data from Crunchbase, the U.S. has lagged behind other countries in crypto uptake and interest.  A report by blockchain and crypto intelligence firm Chainalysis ranked the U.S. eighth, dropping from sixth, in its 2021 global crypto adoption index, with adoption in the country standing at 14%. Per Chainalysis, the biggest reason the country dropped is that its ranking in P2P trade volume weighted for internet-using population declined dramatically. However, the data also suggested increasing global crypto adoption.  Meanwhile, another study shows that many more Americans who are not yet crypto users have plans to do so before the end of 2022. The study conducted by the Ascent, found that about 56% of the U.S. adult population, or around 46 million Americans, plan to invest in crypto during 2022.

Good News For Retirees: Spending Falls Over Time, Study Finds – Barron’s https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/good-news-for-retirees-spending-falls-over-time-study-finds-barrons/ Text size Increases in spending on health tend not to be enough to offset declines in other categories late in life, so overall expenditures shrink. Dreamstime Financial models usually assume flat spending in retirement, but research suggests that outlays actually diminish over time. For many retirees, this decline comes because they derive less enjoyment from leisure activities like travel and eating out, rather than because they have run into financial distress and are forced to cut back, according to a new working paper by Susann Rohwedder, senior economist at the RAND Corporation and associate director of the RAND Center for the Study of Aging, and co-authors Michael D. Hurd and Péter Hudomiet. Their findings hold implications for retirement planning. “The broad trend is a decline in spending across all socio-economic groups,” Rohwedder said. “Household situations change over retirement quite a bit.” As time passes, people might lose a spouse or find themselves in worsening health, factors that tend to make activities like travel, eating out, and buying new cars less fun than they used to be, the researchers found. The analysis was based on data from the large-scale, long-running University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study and a survey on consumer spending that went out to a subset of those participants, both funded by the National Institute on Aging and the Social Security Administration. While for most respondents, getting less enjoyment from some types of spending, such as on leisure and travel, was related to worsening health, for some (between 10% and 20%), financial constraints also played a role. However, the percentage reporting financial distress is lower at advanced ages, suggesting that the declines observed in overall spending aren’t being driven by people becoming more financially squeezed as time passed. Leisure and travel spending captures about 5% of the budgets of people in their late 50s, then declines to about 3% for people age 85 and older, the researchers found. Spending on transportation (mostly car-related) declined from about 21% of total expenditures in people’s late 50s to about 10% by age 85-plus. By contrast, health spending ramps up from 8% of the budgets of people in their late 50s to about 15% about for retirees age 85 and older. In general, the increase in health spending isn’t enough to offset the decline in outlays for various other spending categories (transportation, clothing, leisure, trips and vacation) as people age, so spending drops overall. (One caveat, Rohwedder noted, is that the data on consumer spending might not include acute medical spending toward the very end of life. While those outlays are represented well in other parts of the Health and Retirement Study, they aren’t easily integrated with the spending data analyzed in the working paper, she said.) Traditional financial advice tells savers to plan to replace a certain percentage, often around 80%, of their working income in retirement. When that time comes, you no longer spend money on work-related activities like commuting—and you’re no longer saving for retirement—so you won’t need as much to live on, the conventional wisdom goes. That estimate then informs your goals of how much to save. Yet in your early years of retirement, you could easily spend more than 100% of your working income as you enjoy more travel and other leisure activities. Then as you begin to slow down, your spending often declines. Rohwedder said she noted years ago that people’s financial gifts and donations as a percentage of total spending tended to increase with age. That wouldn’t happen if people were having trouble making ends meet, so she wanted to dig deeper, she said. “Everyone is concerned about running out of money, but then this happens,” she said. While some people do experience financial distress in later life, the fact that many don’t might give preretirees comfort amid the many uncertainties of retirement planning. Dave Boniface, a financial advisor with Legacy Capital Wealth Management in Forest Lake, Minn., tells clients to plan to spend about 100% of their working income throughout retirement, if feasible. Then, if they end up spending less later on, they’ll have more money for possible acute health needs later in life or more to give to their heirs. Boniface has seen many clients slow down as they age, but his mother is defying the typical pattern.  Now 79 and widowed, she is currently staying in hostels as she hikes her way across Europe. “I can’t keep up with her,” he said. Pooja Makhija States 5 Reasons Behind Pigmentation Issues – NDTV Doctor https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/pooja-makhija-states-5-reasons-behind-pigmentation-issues-ndtv-doctor/ Home »  Skin »  Pooja Makhija States 5 Reasons Behind Pigmentation Issues  Nutritionist Pooja Makhija, in her latest Instagram post, explains five reasons why it is difficult to get rid of pigmentation issues.   By: Manya Singh    Edited By:  NDTV Health Desk Updated: Sep 20, 2022 02:10 IST 4-Min Read Lack of proper sleep can lead to hyperpigmentation What is skin pigmentation? It is basically the colour of your skin. The pigmentation is determined by the amount of melanin, a natural pigment, which gives skin, hair, and eyes their unique colour. The skin can become darker or lighter due to the changes in the body’s production of melanin. Uneven skin pigmentation (or hyperpigmentation or malasma) is a common complaint. Nutritionist Pooja Makhija, in her latest Instagram post, explains five reasons why people tend to face pigmentation issues. From nutrients to the sleep cycle, everything affects skin pigmentation.  Have a look:  1. Hormonal Disorder  Pooja Makhija holds hormonal imbalance as the number one reason behind uneven pigmentation. “Estrogen and progesterone stimulate overproduction of melanin when exposed to sun,” she said. In addition, the health expert suggests “rule out PCOS and/or thyroid.” 2. Dehydration  We tend to overlook our water intake. But did you know, that dehydration worsens hyperpigmentation? Therefore, you must “drink 2-3 litres of water” every day.  3. Protein You will face pigmentation issues if your diet doesn’t include enough protein, which helps in skin regeneration and cell replacement. “Consume protein in all three meals,” says Pooja Makhija.  4. Sleep Well Your body repairs in deep sleep, therefore, get 7-8 hours of sleep every day. Keep your sleep and wake timings similar.  5. Nutrients  Skin pigmentation is a sign that your body isn’t receiving the right amount of micro-nutrients as vitamins and minerals are essential to skin detoxification. The nutritionist suggests consuming a glass of vegetable juice each day.  This is not it, nutritionist Pooja Makhija shares a recipe for vegetable juice in the caption. “Blend any three (or more) different colour vegetables in a blender with little water. Strain, add 50% (or don’t strain) of the fibre back into the glass, add some lime juice and slurp it down immediately,” she wrote. Pooja Makhija highlights that one should not add fruits to the drink, only vegetables like tomato, cucumber, and carrot with some celery or coriander leaves.  Disclaimer: This content including advice provides generic information only. Harris Poll Report Finds That 71% Of Crypto Investors Are Confident They Will Become Billionaires – Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/harris-poll-report-finds-that-71-of-crypto-investors-are-confident-they-will-become-billionaires-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ A new survey conducted by Harris Poll has found that most cryptocurrency investors in America feel they have the necessary tools to become billionaires in the future. The survey, which inquired about how Americans see billionaires, also revealed that this sentiment is higher amongst millennials and Gen Zers, with other groups falling behind Crypto Still Seen as Billionaire-Maker Investment, According to Harris Poll Survey While the recent downturn in the global economy and the subsequent price deceleration in traditional stock and crypto markets has made some investors lose confidence, many cryptocurrency investors are still optimistic. A survey conducted by Harris Poll in July has revealed that cryptocurrency investors are very hopeful about the future of the industry. Harris Poll contacted close to 2,000 Americans to inquire about their views on billionaires and how society sees them. 71% of the cryptocurrency investors polled stated that they believed they had the available tools to become a billionaire in the future. This percentage was high compared to the percentage of all the groups combined, which only reached 44%. In the same way, 60% of the polled stated that they want to become billionaires and that they look up to the men and women part of this select group. Gen Z and Millennials Confident, Too The survey results also reveal that Gen Zers and millennials rank high when it comes to being confident about the possibilities of becoming billionaires. These groups are also commonly associated with new financial technologies such as crypto and fintech. In 2020, a survey conducted by the Devere group indicated that two thirds of millennials prefer bitcoin to gold as a safe haven asset. At that time, Nigel Green, CEO and founder of Devere group, stated: In-line with the findings that show that millennials have a preference for bitcoin over gold, the cryptocurrency is set up for growing prominence as a serious safe-haven asset class. Green also linked the interest and preference of these younger generations for crypto with the level of inflation in devaluation that global economies are facing due to the high issuance of unbacked fiat money. The edge that bitcoin could have over gold and other traditional fiat currencies depends on its unique characteristics, which allow it to be non-sovereign, decentralized, scarce, and a store of value, according to Green. What do you think about the confidence that crypto investors have in becoming billionaires? Tell us in the comments section below. Pacific Islands A Key U.S. Military Buffer To China’s Ambitions – Report – Reuters https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/pacific-islands-a-key-u-s-military-buffer-to-chinas-ambitions-report-reuters/ U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s plane makes its landing approach on Pohnpei International Airport in Kolonia, Federated States of Micronesia August 5, 2019. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File Photo Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com SYDNEY, Sept 20 (Reuters) – China sees the Pacific islands as an area of significant strategic interest and the United States should strengthen its commitment to north Pacific island states, now in talks to renew a defence compact, to maintain a vital military buffer, a report released Tuesday by a U.S. Congress-funded think tank said. China had made progress in the Pacific on geostrategic goals it has been unable to achieve elsewhere, said the report for the United States Institute for Peace, whose co-authors include former senior military officials. This was cause for concern but not alarm, the report added, saying the U.S. should bolster support for island states in the north Pacific where it had the strongest historical ties. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The report comes ahead of a meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and a dozen Pacific island leaders next week, as Washington seeks to compete for influence with Beijing. read more The Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and Palau are sovereign nations known as Freely Associated States (FAS), after signing compacts in the late 1980s that give the U.S. defence responsibility and the right to military bases. The compacts, which expire in 2023 and 2024, are being renegotiated, and the report warned that these states could look to China for funding if negotiations fail. “The vast FAS territorial seas, which span much of the northern Pacific, are an important strategic buffer between U.S. defense assets in Guam and Hawaii and East Asian littoral waters,” said the report, whose authors include Philip Davidson, a former commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, and David Stilwell, a former U.S. assistant secretary of state. If Beijing were to succeed in bringing one of these states into its sphere, “it would imperil U.S. military capabilities in a strategically vital geographic command area and open the door to a broader reordering of regional architecture with implications well beyond the Pacific region,” it said. A U.S. missile defence test range in the Marshall Islands is critical to U.S. space and missile-defense capabilities, it added. Across the Pacific region, China is seeking to enhance its access to ports and Exclusive Economic Zones, frustrate efforts by the United States to project military power, increase intelligence gathering and surveillance capabilities, reduce Taiwan’s diplomatic partners, and promote the Chinese model of political and economic development, the report said. “China views the Pacific Islands as an area of significant strategic interest,” it said. Washington needs to provide an alternative to Chinese economic assistance to “counter Beijing’s efforts to capitalize on regional perceptions of neglect and abandonment”. More resources were needed to monitor China’s increasing activity in the FAS, where Chinese research vessels with “military utility” have been spotted without permission. The Federated States of Micronesia recently agreed to develop new U.S. military facilities, and Palau requested the U.S. build airstrips, ports and bases, which “Washington should consider seriously to the extent that it aligns with defense needs,” the report said. Daimler Trucks Shifts Battery Strategy To Avoid Competition With Cars – Automotive News Europe https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/daimler-trucks-shifts-battery-strategy-to-avoid-competition-with-cars-automotive-news-europe/ HANOVER, Germany — Daimler Trucks is migrating its battery chemistry to a formula that eliminates nickel and cobalt to improve durability and reduce competition with the passenger car business for scarce materials. Daimler will gradually move its vehicles to lithium iron phosphate batteries it has developed in partnership with China’s CATL. Iron and phosphate cost far less and are easier to mine than other battery materials. “They are both cheap and plentiful almost everywhere and will definitely help to reduce the pressure on the battery supply chain as adoption grows,” said Sam Abuelsamid, an analyst with Guidehouse Insights. Daimler, the German parent of Freightliner and Western Star truck brands, announced the strategy as it debuted a longer-haul electric truck for the European market at IAA Transportation 2022 on Monday. “My fear is if the entire passenger car market, not just Tesla or the high-end cars, moves to batteries, there will be a fight,” Martin Daum, Daimler Truck’s CEO, told Automotive News. “And a fight always means higher pricing.” Eliminating nickel and cobalt, the rarest elements going into vehicle batteries, reduces the cost, he said. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells cost about 30 percent less than nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) cells, according to BloombergNEF. “The much lower cost, superior durability and safety make LFP a very appealing prospect for many use cases, especially commercial vehicles,” Abuelsamid said. Freightliner and other Daimler brands now use NMC chemistry that relies on lithium and manganese in addition to nickel and cobalt. Energy density a focal point Much of the passenger car industry will stick to NMC chemistry that uses nickel and cobalt because those batteries have greater energy density. That allows for greater range in a small vehicle, Daum said. Still, there is some movement even among passenger car makers to LFP batteries, Abuelsamid said, especially entry-level models. Tesla, for example, is starting to use LFP technology for some vehicles it manufactures in China. “We expect that LFP will probably account for at least one-third of the EV battery market in the second half of the decade as most manufacturers adopt for at least some applications,” Abuelsamid said. Besides Tesla, Volvo and Ford plan to incorporate LFP batteries into some of their vehicles. Daum said the technology makes good sense for large commercial vehicles like electric Freightliners. The trucks have enough space for larger batteries that compensate for the lower energy density of LFP chemistry. Technology advances may further narrow the gap. An expected shift in cell-to-pack architectures will eliminate the modular structure in batteries and help overcome the reduced energy density of LFP chemistry, Abuelsamid said. That’s because the new design doubles the amount of active energy-storing material in a battery pack to 70 percent to 80 percent, he explained. According to Daum, LFP also offers better longevity because it doesn’t suffer the same level of degradation after thousands of cycles. Many in the industry consider LFP batteries safer because they operate at a lower temperature and are less likely to catch fire. Strategies defined by segment Batteries are starting to divide along multiple technology pathways by vehicle segment, said Nathan Niese, an electrification expert and partner with Boston Consulting Group. Premium vehicles will offer the latest-generation high-nickel batteries that push boundaries on battery innovation, he said. Mid-level vehicles will use high-nickel or LFP chemistries that focus on fast recharging, while entry-level vehicles will come equipped with LFP or sodium-ion chemistries that value cost competitiveness over vehicle range. The massive scale of the passenger vehicle market and its advantage as the first mover create sourcing challenges for later entrants such as commercial vehicle manufacturers, Niese said. Daimler’s change in battery strategy comes as it unveils the Mercedes-Benz Trucks eActros Long Haul Class 8 truck. The truck will have the new LFP batteries when it goes into production in 2024. Daimler, which owns Mercedes-Benz Trucks, said it would have a range of about 483 km (300 miles). Although Daimler plans to sell the eActros in Europe, its batteries and other technology will appear in a future eCascadia model, Daum said. “We are looking for maximum commonality on all platforms,” he said.

AP News Summary At 2:09 A.m. EDT | National | Wandtv.com – WAND https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/ap-news-summary-at-209-a-m-edt-national-wandtv-com-wand/ UN chief warns global leaders: The world is in ‘great peril’ UNITED NATIONS (AP) — U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is warning that the world is in “great peril.” And he says world leaders meeting in-person for the first time in three years at the U.N. General Assembly must tackle conflicts and climate catastrophes, increasing poverty and inequality, and divisions among major powers that have gotten worse since Russia invaded Ukraine. The U.N. chief also cited the “immense” task not only of saving the planet but of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric says Guterres’ “state of the world” speech will be “a sober, substantive and solutions-focused report card.” Strengthening Fiona barrels toward Turks and Caicos Islands SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Hurricane Fiona is barreling toward the Turks and Caicos Islands as it threatens to strengthen into a Category 3 storm, prompting the government to impose a curfew. Forecasters say Fiona could become a major hurricane late Monday or on Tuesday, when it was expected to pass near the British territory. Premier Washington Misick, who was in London attending the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, urged people to take every needed precaution. The intensifying storm also kept dropping copious rain over the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Ukraine, using captured Russian tanks, firms up its lines KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine is now deploying captured Russian tanks to solidify its gains in the northeast amid an ongoing counteroffensive. That’s according to the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War. The institute, citing a Russian claim, said that Ukraine had been using left-behind Russian T-72 tanks as it tries to push into the Russian-occupied region of Luhansk. Earlier this month, Ukraine launched its counteroffensive, pushing into territory around its second-largest city of Kharkiv. Videos and photos showed Ukrainian troops seizing tanks, ammunition and other weaponry left behind by Moscow in an apparently chaotic withdrawal. Ad spending shows Dems hinging midterm hopes on abortion WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats are pumping an unprecedented amount of money into advertising related to abortion rights. The spending underscores how central the message is to the party in the final weeks before midterm elections. The most intense period of campaigning is only just beginning, and Democrats have already invested more than an estimated $124 million this year in television advertising referencing abortion. That’s twice as much money as the Democrats’ next top issue and almost 20 times more than Democrats spent on abortion-related ads in the 2018 midterms. The spending figures are based on an Associated Press analysis of data provided by the nonpartisan research firm AdImpact. Congress eyes strongest response yet to Jan. 6 attack WASHINGTON (AP) — House Democrats are voting this week on changes to a 19th century law for certifying presidential elections. The measure is their strongest legislative response yet to the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection and former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat. A vote to overhaul the Electoral Count Act is expected Wednesday. A bipartisan group of senators is moving forward with a similar bill. The Senate Rules Committee will vote on its version of the legislation next week. Lawmakers in both parties have said they want to change the arcane law before it is challenged again. Queen Elizabeth II mourned by Britain and world at funeral LONDON (AP) — Britain and the world said farewell to Queen Elizabeth II with pomp and pageantry. Crowds massed in the streets of London and at Windsor Castle to honor a monarch whose 70-year reign defined an era. The first state funeral since Winston Churchill’s drew world leaders and other royalty. Before the service, a bell tolled 96 times for each year of Elizabeth’s life. Royal Navy sailors pulled a gun carriage carrying her flag-draped coffin to Westminster Abbey before pallbearers carried it inside. Atop the coffin was a handwritten note from King Charles III. After a committal service at a chapel in Windsor Castle, the coffin was lowered into the royal vault. Witnesses: Myanmar air attack kills 13, including 7 children BANGKOK (AP) — A school administrator says government helicopters have attacked a school and village in Myanmar, killing at least 13 people including seven children. The number of children killed in the government attack last Friday in Sagaing region appears to be the highest since the army seized power in February 2021. The army’s takeover triggered mass nonviolent protests nationwide. The military and police responded with deadly force, resulting in the spread of armed resistance in the cities and countryside. The fighting has been especially fierce in Sagaing, where several military offensives have displaced more than half a million people, according to UNICEF. Britain’s Truss doesn’t expect UK-US trade deal anytime soon NEW YORK (AP) — Prime Minister Liz Truss has kicked off her first visit to the United States as Britain’s leader with an admission that a U.K-U.S. free trade deal is not going to happen for years. On her way to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Truss said “there (aren’t) currently any negotiations taking place with the U.S., and I don’t have an expectation that those are going to start in the short to medium term.” That’s a sharp contrast with the stance of her immediate predecessors, Boris Johnson and Theresa May. Both dangled the promise of a deal with the world’s biggest economy as one of the main prizes of Britain’s exit from the European Union. ‘Serial’ case: Adnan Syed released, conviction tossed BALTIMORE (AP) — A Baltimore judge has ordered the release of Adnan Syed after overturning Syed’s conviction for a 1999 murder that was chronicled in the hit podcast “Serial.” Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn on Monday ordered that Syed’s conviction be vacated and she approved the release of the now-41-year-old who has spent more than two decades behind bars. Syed has always maintained that he never killed his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. The case received widespread attention in 2014 when “Serial” focused on Lee’s killing and raised doubts about some of the evidence prosecutors had used. Last week, prosecutors filed a motion saying a lengthy investigation had uncovered new evidence that could undermine Syed’s conviction. Energy crisis key to Italy’s election — but not conservation MILAN (AP) — The energy crisis facing Italian industry and households is a top voter concern going into Sunday’s parliamentary elections as fears grow that astronomically high bills will shutter some businesses and force household rationing by winter. Never in an Italian election campaign has energy been such a central talking point. Candidates have sparred over whether debt-laden Italy, which has already spent more than 60 billion euros to help families, businesses and local governments, should incur yet more debt to finance new relief. They also disagree on whether Italy should consider reinvesting in new nuclear technologies. But no party is discussing whether to implement conservation measures, like many of Italy’s European neighbors. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. The humid, wet, and damp conditions during the rainy season make it perfect for the growth and multiplication of various fungi. So, fungal infection woes are common during monsoons. Most skin problems are not life-threatening but the unwillingness to visit a dermatologist will only increase the risk and severity of the condition. In an Instagram video, dermatologist Dr. Kiran Sethi highlights three fungal conditions people might face in the inner thighs during the monsoon season. She also shares tips to prevent and treat them. 1. Frictional rash The dermatologist explains that it looks a bit darker when the skin is infected with a frictional rash. This rash isn’t itchy and is not caused by a fungus, but it often gets mistaken for fungus. She suggests keeping the area dry and preventing sweat from accumulating around the inner thighs. 2. Intertrigo This inflammatory skin condition is caused by skin-to-skin friction, which only gets intensified by heat and moisture during the monsoons. Yeasts like candida are formed which makes the skin appear red and itchy. Expert advises using an anti-fungal cream, twice a day to treat this fungal infection. 3. Tinea Corporis According to Dr. Kiran Sethi, Tinea Corporis is a proper fungal infection, which appears as round rashes, has a sharp border, and is really itchy. She says that anti-fungal cream, twice a day, is recommended for its treatment, and sometimes tablets too. In case of rashes or discolouration in the inner thighs, Dr. Kiran Sethi advises people to consult a doctor for appropriate treatment. She also pens down quick tips for preventing such fungal infections: 1. Keep the area dry 2. Reduce friction 3. Wear sweat-wicking fabrics 4. Make sure you change after you sweat 5. Facebook, Beware: The Metaverse Is Flat – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/facebook-beware-the-metaverse-is-flat-the-washington-post/ In a few weeks’ time, Mark Zuckerberg will announce a new virtual reality headset from Meta Platforms Inc. Embarrassingly, we already know what it will look like. A video of the purported device has been doing the rounds online after someone found one in a hotel room. Yet none of that should matter because whizzy VR headsets are becoming too much of a distraction, and aren’t that integral to the early growth of the so-called metaverse, a 3D version of the internet that many see as its next chapter. It turns out flat screens are doing the job just fine.  While Facebook has sold about 14 million VR headsets to date, millions more have visited the metaverse through regular 2D screens like the one you’re looking at right now, via apps like Roblox and Epic Games Inc.’s Fortnite. The trend is likely to continue for several years yet as VR headsets take time to slim down in size and price. That puts Zuckerberg in an awkward position. He wants you to buy Meta’s headset, known as the Quest, because that gives him greater control over whatever metaverse marketplace he builds down the line. And the reason is clear: For years he’s been beholden to the rules of app gatekeepers Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Apple Inc., paying their fees and following edicts such as the App Tracking Transparency prompt that will knock about $14 million off Facebook’s ad sales this year. It would be a painful, almost unthinkable step for Facebook to make its metaverse platform Horizon Worlds available on app stores. But perhaps there is another way. Facebook could allow people to visit the platform via a simple browser. Google’s Stadia uses a service called cloud-streaming that lets people play large video games via Chrome. It’s an expensive process, requiring powerful servers, but it could help Facebook circumvent Apple and Google while drumming up a flood of curious new users. Meta’s technology chief Andrew Bosworth hinted on Twitter earlier this year that a web-based version was in the cards, but a company spokeswoman declined to provide further details. “It’d be a 3D version of Facebook that looks like a game, but you’d browse it from your desktop,” said Sam Huber, CEO of metaverse property startup LandVault. “It could become the most popular game in the world.” Even modest popularity would reassure investors who are likely to balk at how slowly the company’s headset customers are growing: A mere 300,000 people have visited Horizon Worlds since it launched last October. You can only access the platform via a Quest 2 headset. “Facebook seems to be operating from a sunk cost fallacy,” said Wagner James Au, an author and blogger who has covered the metaverse for more than a decade. “There’s no data to support VR headsets as being the mass market device.”   In fact, flat versions of the metaverse are far more popular than 3D ones. About three-quarters of Roblox’s 52 million daily visitors are on a phone, while the vast majority of people using Microsoft Corp.’s Minecraft or Fortnite are on a desktop computer or mobile. Several metaverse companies have also pivoted to flat. Decentraland, for instance, a virtual world for trading crypto assets, was marketed as a “virtual reality platform” when it launched its initial coin offering in 2017. Yet all its users have since been visiting via a desktop or browser, the company says. VRChat, a platform for socializing with other avatars, was first released as an app for Oculus headsets in 2014. Three years later it produced a desktop version, and was able to attract millions more users. “The issue is price,” said Artur Sychov, the founder of metaverse startup Somnium Space, whose users mostly visit on a browser. Meta’s Quest 2 costs about $400, while other rival headsets can exceed $800. Going into a virtual world on a screen is actually a decent proxy for “real” VR and certainly more engaging than a regular video call, as I discovered when Sychov took me on a tour of the Somnium universe during our Zoom meeting. Since I wasn’t technically with him as an avatar, Sychov held a virtual tablet in front of him with a “camera” that let me follow his movements around the space. Watching him point to art in a virtual gallery and moving through colorful forests, even on my laptop screen, was enough to help me imagine myself being there. Until now, Meta’s marketing has focused on the immersive benefits of VR headsets, creating the feeling that you’re really with work colleagues or inside a fitness class. But that misses the true selling point of the metaverse — incentives to create new experiences — and you don’t need a VR headset for that. To lure more people into its virtual platforms, Meta needs to focus less on building cutting-edge headsets, and more on emulating metaverse pioneers like Roblox, Fortnite and Minecraft. Almost a quarter of Roblox’s own users have created millions of games for the platform, producing a marketplace for commerce as well as fun. Nearly all its content is user-generated, just like TikTok or YouTube, and that is a big part of its attraction. Zuckerberg similarly must turn his metaverse into a place where creators can thrive. Facebook’s current push to test tools for creators feels late, given how far ahead the other pioneers are. Concentrating too much on immersive tech is putting the cart before the horse. Meta needs to make its metaverse both accessible and an attractive place for creators. Going “flat” would be a good start.
