Princeton Keeps No. 1 U.S. News Ranking For Twelfth Consecutive Year – The Daily Princetonian https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/princeton-keeps-no-1-u-s-news-ranking-for-twelfth-consecutive-year-the-daily-princetonian/ For the twelfth year in a row, Princeton ranks No. 1 in the U.S. News and World Report’s annual Best National University rankings. Massachusetts Institute of Technology was ranked second, while Harvard, Yale, and Stanford tied for third. Columbia University dropped to the 18th spot after claiming the second spot last year.  Princeton was also ranked No. 2 in Best Value Schools, after Harvard. In Best Undergraduate Teaching, the University was ranked third, tied with Rice University. In this category, Elon University and Brown University were ranked first and second, respectively.  U.S. News and World Report bases rankings on the following categories: Graduation and Retention Rates, Social Mobility, Graduation Rate Performance, Undergraduate Academic Reputation, Faculty Resources for the 2021-2022 year, Student Selectivity for the Fall 2021 Entering Class, Financial Resources per Student, Average Alumni Giving Rate, and Graduate Indebtedness.  To create the Best National University rankings, U.S. News and World Report uses 18 sets of statistics, from Pell Grant graduation rates to faculty compensation. These statistics are developed into individual rankings in 10 distinct categories, and then the U.S. News and World Report uses a formula to determine their final rankings.  This formula, however, has come under recent scrutiny. Dr. Michael Thaddeus of Columbia University exposed his own university in a blog post earlier this year, which found that Columbia had exaggerated its performance on a variety of metrics to inflate its evaluation. These inaccuracies and the resulting controversy may be part of the reason for Columbia’s dramatic drop in the rankings. U.S. News and World Report defines 443 universities as “National Universities,” and these schools are exclusively ranked against each other. In the 13 publicly available category lists on the Princeton University Rankings page, Princeton ranks in the top 10 in 10 categories (including Best Colleges for Veterans and First-Year Experiences). It is ranked in the top seven percent of all publicly available categories but one: Princeton is ranked 186th in Social Mobility, around the 58th percentile. New Tech Aims To Track Carbon In Every Tree, Boost Carbon Market Integrity – Mongabay.com https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/new-tech-aims-to-track-carbon-in-every-tree-boost-carbon-market-integrity-mongabay-com/ Climate scientists and data engineers have developed a new digital platform billed as the first-ever global tool for accurately calculating the carbon stored in every tree on the planet. Founded on two decades of research and development, the new platform from nonprofit CTrees leverages artificial intelligence-enabled satellite datasets to give users a near-real-time picture of forest carbon storage and emissions around the world. With forest protection and restoration at the center of international climate mitigation efforts, CTrees is set to officially launch at COP27 in November, with the overall aim of bringing an unprecedented level of transparency and accountability to climate policy initiatives that rely on forests to offset carbon emissions. Forest experts broadly welcome the new platform, but also underscore the risk of assessing forest restoration and conservation projects solely by the amount of carbon sequestered, which can sometimes be a red herring in achieving truly sustainable and equitable forest management. Users of a new digital platform from nonprofit CTrees will be able to track in near-real-time the carbon stored and emitted in the world’s forests. The platform is borne out of two decades of research and development by a team of the world’s leading climate scientists and data engineers. It’s being touted as the first-ever global system for calculating the amount of carbon in every tree on the planet. “Forests are extremely important to mitigate climate change because they absorb a major part of the carbon in the atmosphere annually,” Sassan Saatchi, a senior scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory who collaborated with colleagues in the U.S., Brazil, Denmark and France to develop the platform, told Mongabay. However, because trees are so efficient at stashing away carbon dioxide, they release vast quantities of carbon back into the atmosphere when forests are degraded, felled or burned. Recent studies have shown that many forests are nearing a tipping point that compromises their ability to store carbon, with parts of Southeast Asia and the Amazon already net carbon emitters due to multiple human-induced stressors. Pine trees in the Sierra Nevada, U.S. Photo by Rhett A. Butler for Mongabay Due to this weighty influence on atmospheric carbon, forest conservation and restoration have become major components of climate change mitigation efforts through climate policy initiatives that rely on forests to offset carbon emissions. But up until now, the world has lacked a globally consistent and transparent means of quantifying and tracking forest carbon. The new CTrees platform now fills this gap, said Saatchi. It’s a “game changer,” he said, for the world’s governments, investors and organizations to make better science-based decisions. “The transition to carbon neutrality requires accurate accounting,” he said. “To truly evaluate the benefits of carbon reduction efforts, market and policy actors need a global state-of-the-art system for measuring and monitoring. Until now, this technology hasn’t been available to carbon markets, and only on a limited basis to climate policymakers.” The new platform is due to officially launch at COP27 this November, when world leaders will convene in Egypt to discuss progress made toward national climate commitments. Knowing exactly how much carbon forests emit or capture will be key for decision-makers involved in calculating individual countries’ nationally determined contributions under the Paris Agreement. Saatchi said CTrees’ science-based approach offers a much-needed update to the current method of forest carbon accounting, which relies on nationally reported figures that are often incomplete and inconsistent. By providing a high-accuracy, up-to-date overview of the carbon implications of forest conservation and restoration at local, national and global levels, the new platform can bring unprecedented levels of transparency and accountability to the arena, he said. Besides policymakers and investors, the platform is a boon for environmental advocates and rights groups that can access open-source global and national-level data, enabling them to hold governments and organizations to account on their commitments. Global forests are still an overall net carbon sink, but some forested areas have transitioned to net emitters due to degradation, deforestation, rising temperatures and many other threats. Image courtesy of CTrees Fine-scale accuracy and detail There are an estimated 3 trillion trees from 60,000 species on the planet. Therefore, tracking the forest carbon flux across the globe a huge task, but one that Saatchi said new technology can deal with. “In the old days, we had to take [airborne] pictures and then draw lines around these single trees to identify them and separate them. … Now, we do it with cloud-based artificial intelligence and we can process terabytes of the data in hours.” The CTrees forest carbon monitoring system merges carbon flux datasets spanning back to the early 2000s with artificial intelligence-enabled high-resolution satellite data from a range of systems, including Planet, which provide datasets of up to 3 by 3 meters (10 by 10 feet) resolution and other sources that go down to 0.5 by 0.5 meters (1.6 by 1.6 feet) resolution. “This gets us to the level of trees,” Saatchi said, allowing individual trees outside of forest stands, such as in urban centers, to be included in carbon accounting — a practice typically lacking up until now. The fine-scale approach to carbon accounting makes it possible to estimate emissions and sequestration not only at the country level, but also at much finer scales such as individual jurisdictions, forest patches, plantations and tree-planting projects. The platform can also distinguish between natural forests and commercial plantations, the cutting cycle of which can be tracked. Such information is vital to assess which types of forest investments could make the most impact, he said. CTrees map of carbon stored in forests globally during 2021. Image courtesy of CTrees A boost to tree planting accountability Karen Holl, a restoration ecologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz, said tools that enable real-time and rigorous monitoring of tree cover are critical to verifying whether the world’s massive tree growing efforts are having the desired effects. This is because many organizations involved in tree planting overly focus on the number of trees put into the ground, she said, rather than investing in long-term monitoring to ensure planted trees remain healthy and alive well into the future. “There are many examples of tree growing efforts that have failed initially, and sometimes the same areas are planted year after year with the trees being counted multiple times,” Holl told Mongabay in an email. “Monitoring on most of these reforestation projects is short-term (1-3 years) or nonexistent. Moreover … young secondary forests are often recleared within a decade or two.” Meredith Martin, an assistant professor of forestry at North Carolina State University, said the lack of monitoring is a major concern. She and her colleagues recently found that fewer than one-fifth of organizations engaged in tree planting in the tropics have a monitoring program, with still fewer measuring tree survival or amounts of carbon stored. Martin acknowledged that platforms like CTrees are powerful tools to promote transparency and accountability in the sector, but noted that reducing the merits of reforestation efforts down to the amount of carbon sequestered alone risks overlooking other important factors. “Carbon doesn’t tell us anything about biodiversity or even about actual forest resilience to climate change,” Martin told Mongabay in an email. “For example, we are seeing new invasive pests and diseases spreading throughout the US that can wipe out individual tree species quite quickly, so managing forests for diversity and functional redundancy may be more important in the long term than just focusing on the amount of carbon sequestered in the short term.” Mark Ashton, a professor of silviculture and forest ecology at Yale University, said that the problems of forest loss and degradation are unlikely to be solved solely through technological solutions. “The real solutions to forest recovery and sustainable use are social, cultural and economic,” Ashton told Mongabay in an email. “Better forest management is obtained when you direct your focus to solving human problems in the forestlands that are undergoing deforestation and degradation.” Martin echoed Ashton’s call for more human-centric solutions. “Ultimately I think much more attention should be spent listening to local communities and stakeholders to support forest stewardship in a truly sustainable way,” she said. Joe Kent Seeks Election On America First Agenda Thats What I Stand For Centralia Chronicle
Joe Kent Seeks Election On ‘America First Agenda, That’s What I Stand For’ – Centralia Chronicle https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/joe-kent-seeks-election-on-america-first-agenda-thats-what-i-stand-for-centralia-chronicle/ By Isabel Vander Stoep  / isabel@chronline.com  Editor’s Note: A profile on Democratic congressional candidate Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Washougal, can be found here. Working for the CIA, former Green Beret Joe Kent lived about as covert a life as one can. Now, by the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate from Yacolt has been thrust into the public eye.  Well over a year ago now, Kent was roused to candidacy by Republican incumbent Jaime Herrera Beutler’s vote to impeach Trump after the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.  Long before the filing deadline last May, he and candidates Heidi St. John and Wadi Yakhour held a pact that the former president’s endorsement of one would spur the other two to drop out of the race. While the promise was not kept by St. John, Kent secured the endorsement and later punched his ticket to the Nov. 8 general election when he came up over Herrera Buetler, ending her service after six terms representing Washington’s 3rd Congressional District. His opponent is Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Washougal. After holding phone town halls with the former president and making multiple appearances on Fox News with Tucker Carlson, Kent is coming to grips with massive changes to his life in rural Clark County, where he lives with his two sons, 7-year-old Colt and 5-year-old Josh. “Initially it was hard. But I mean, we’re in very odd times right now, very, I think, desperate times. I was able to kind of put that aside. And I feel passionately about what I’m doing and the issues that I stand for and the movement I’m a part of,” he said, later describing that movement as an “‘America First’ agenda, that’s what I stand for.” ‘Galvanized’ Asking Kent, 43, a Gold Star husband who’s traveled the world, to summarize his life story is asking for a Washington November without rain.  He grew up in Portland as a Boy Scout who loved visiting Mount St. Helens. His grandparents fought in World War II, giving him interest in war history from childhood.  In 1993, “savage combat” of the Black Hawk Down incident shocked and inspired him, he said.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1998 and was stationed at Fort Lewis. During the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, he was in training for the Special Forces.  “The mentality coming from the ‘80s and ‘90s, a lot of us thought, ‘Oh man, the guys that got to go spend that early phase in Afghanistan, that’s going to be it. That’s going to be our Panama, Grenada or Mogadishu and we’re not going to go to war for another 10, 15 years.’ So, I was definitely galvanized (by 9/11). There’s some real threats out there. I wanted our country to take them seriously,” he said.  His service as a Green Beret often meant spending half his year deployed and the other half in training, he said, until 2018.  “Then, retired on a Friday and swore in with the CIA on Monday as a CIA paramilitary operations officer,” he said, calling that wing of the agency the “pointy edge of covert operations.” He primarily worked out of the Middle East, speaking Arabic and training partner forces to take out terrorists.  In Baghdad in 2007, he briefly met Shannon Smith, who was serving on an intelligence team of Navy SEALs. The next time they met in 2013, the two served in a small unit together and bonded quickly, Kent recalled. He was 33 when they met the second time. In the following two years, they were married and had their first child. While he always thought of the Pacific Northwest as home, the duo intended on raising their children overseas, going from embassy to embassy and combining family life with service to their country, Kent said. As Trump was making his rise toward the presidency in 2015-16, Kent said he was one of the few to take him seriously early on. When Trump talked foreign policy and immigration on the debate stage, Kent said, “he went for the throat of the Bush foreign policy.” But Kent’s desire to be involved in policymaking didn’t come until 2019, when his wife was killed by a bombing in Syria.  Resolved to stop being “shot at for a living” and after meeting Trump during a tribute to Shannon and others who were killed, Kent had a lot to say.  “And whoever will listen to me, I’ll do my best to contribute to the conversation,” he said. Joe Kent’s Style In his “old life,” as he referred to it, Kent’s neighbors never knew where he was. Now, he spends his time talking to everyone, be it on podcasts, TV or during in-person town halls. He’s also engaged to be married.  He recognized Trump is the guy with the mean tweets, “for lack of a better term,” and no doubt a polarizing figure.  “My style is not that at all. If they come to my town halls, and I think if they get to know me, you’ll see that difference,” Kent said, adding later that because of his military background, he could see how people might mistake him as stoic. “But I try and do enough unscripted media where people can actually see me.” When the Clark County candidate thinks of the “America First” agenda, he imagines energy independence, strict immigration policy and spending federal dollars on law enforcement in the 3rd district with the goal of knocking out crime. He has previously proposed ending all legal and illegal immigration besides immigration through marriage and ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. He is anti-abortion, calling abortion a “sacrament of the Democrat religion right now,” in his interview with The Chronicle.  And, maybe more than anything, he’s against what he calls “establishment” Republicans, consistently joining those lambasting Herrera Beutler as a “RINO,” Republican in Name-Only, for her impeachment vote.  He said he doesn’t mind when people call him far-right, “because that typically means you’re not an establishment Republican. I personally don’t think I’m extreme.” He’s taken a firm stance on the 2020 presidential election, saying it was stolen from Trump, and even speaking at a rally in Washington, D.C. in support of those accused of storming the Capitol, calling them “political prisoners,” as reported by The New York Times. Asked what he would say to those who agree with his platform up until his claims of widespread election fraud, Kent said in the 3rd district he doesn’t believe it’s actually a hot-button issue “in the way the media thinks.” Pointing to the cumulative 41.99% of the vote split between him, St. John and candidate Vicki Kraft in the primary, he said, “Vicki and I both would say it’s rigged and stolen. Heidi said there’s major problems with the election. With our base right now, there’s a lot of people that have major issues with election integrity.” The question of how Kent will bridge the gap and earn the votes from supporters of Herrera Beutler remains. He previously told The Chronicle he thinks voting for Herrera Beutler is no different from voting for a Democratic candidate, and further, that the Democratic Party simply does not have moderate candidates anymore. “I think folks just have to recognize what the stakes are. And unfortunately, I hate to say it this way, but they have to decide which side they’re going to be on. Because there’s no middle. You can’t be a wishy-washy person now as you’re either with what’s going on with the current administration or you’re going to fight it. And that’s it,” Kent said.  A Big District, A Young Man’s Game In his office in Vancouver, Kent’s campaign manager, Ozzie Gonzalez mans the door. Energetic and intense, the 22-year-old graduated from Camas High School a few years ago and began working for the campaign after Kent filed for office. Gonzalez says the campaign hired 12 staffers over the summer and half returned to college in the fall. Kent said it was an honor to have young folks on his team. He felt with COVID-19, Gen-Z has been forced to grow up fast, relating that to his young adulthood around the time of Sept. 11.  “(Campaigning) is definitely a young man’s game,” Kent said. “Being able to run around the district a whole bunch and still have the energy to keep up with everything.” In a district spanning parts of Thurston County and encompassing Clark, Lewis, Cowlitz, Pacific, Wahkiakum and Skamania counties, the landscape and its people are diverse. The Chehalis, Columbia and Willapa River Basins are all firmly within its political lines, as are the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and Mount St. Helens. A long list of environmental issues face the district. Kent and Gluesenkamp Perez alike want their potential stints in Congress to be defined by championing problems for rural Washingtonians, and both have a focus on increasing family wage jobs, reducing crime and supporting commercial fishermen, loggers and recreators.  Ultimately, Kent believes it’s these issues and relationships that earned him a shot at the general.  “I think we won the election because we knocked on doors, went out and talked to people, and then town halls. If people come and experience that, they’re going to see who I am,” he said. The top vote-getter this November will serve a two-year term and will make a $174,000 yearly salary. Gutierrez: Cracking The Code To East Asian Travel Trends Pacific Daily News
Gutierrez: Cracking The Code To East Asian Travel Trends Pacific Daily News
Gutierrez: Cracking The Code To East Asian Travel Trends – Pacific Daily News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/gutierrez-cracking-the-code-to-east-asian-travel-trends-pacific-daily-news/ Håfa Adai! East Asian travelers are emerging savvier and choosier than ever as destinations across the region retool their economies for the health conscious new realities of a post-pandemic world. The good news is that now a more constrained coronavirus already has leveled the playing field. Furthermore, travel-ready trip planners are eager to navigate their way through lingering COVID-19 roadblocks as they weigh destination options. Locations and attractions that consistently offer the most irresistible combination of safety, convenience and novel new experiences will rise head and shoulders above the fray. Largely undeterred by COVID-era seat-capacity reductions, inflation, higher airfares, and delayed visa processing, today’s cash-flush Asian travelers are planning their trips well in advance, even going so far as to pack extra clothes and medicines in their carry-ons in expectation of airport congestion. Plus, they’re showing a preference for longer stays, luxury options and visiting Europe and the United States. Thankfully, Guam is well positioned to hit a market sweet spot comprised of “revenge” and “mass affluent” travelers, many of whom have been piling up extra cash during lockdowns because they’ve had nowhere else to spend it. After more than two years of biding their time under the weight of in-country travel restrictions, naturally, they’re frustrated with the monotony of shuddered lifestyles, motivated by the lure of adventure and willing to shell out a little extra on upscaling select experiences and forging unforgettable memories abroad because they no longer feel stuck at home. Conversion is key But for Guam, turning these one-off revenge experiences into habit is the secret sauce to reawakening our primary markets such as Japan and Taiwan and revitalizing our happily re-emergent South Korean arrivals. Maybe these vacation-hungry trekkers decide to fly coach-plus or business class for the first time. Or maybe they upgrade their hotel room selection and siphon a little more of their disposable income into gifts, luxury items or meals. Perhaps they choose to spend extra for a personal guided tour or expert concierge services just for themselves and their companions. And if Guam can see fit to give them more authenticated reasons to appreciate our 4,000-year-old CHamoru culture and natural tropical environment, we won’t be surprised to find them booking ecotours and paying higher prices to interact responsibly. We could soon find them making concerted efforts to reduce their carbon footprints throughout their stays, even while they contemplate their next visits here because they truly value a locale that takes such good care of itself. Whatever the case, here are some key takeaways for travel trade professionals to keep in mind as the Guam Visitors Bureau and our trusted industry partners work to reopen traditional markets and strike up new ones through incentives, air service expansion and lobbying the Department of Transportation for guidance and assistance: Make all travel options fast and easy: Tourists already expect booking backlogs, long lines and flight delays in transit during the gradual ramp-up to air route recovery. This is all the more reason to fully digitize marketing and purchasing decisions. If air seat capacities, room vacancies, or product/service inventories are low at the moment, then automate the touchback process so they can pay on their digital devices the moment the airfare they want, the room grade they want, or the tour they want is available. Cater to today’s priorities: Not only has the pandemic left travelers more tech-savvy and digitally interdependent than ever, it’s penetrated a deep need for self care. Wayfarers are listening to their bodies, adjusting their priorities, and reconnecting with nature. Is it any wonder that traditional beer and liquor brewers and Asian restaurants, bars, and nightclubs are now selling and serving more nonalcoholic drinks than ever? Not every vacation morning is fit for a hangover in an age when today’s remote workers are weaving business projects around their sightseeing. Encourage longer stays: Travelers want nothing more than to rejuvenate and free themselves from more than two years of COVID-19 isolation. While today’s guests may be willing to spend more on their getaways, incentives will make them feel all the more relaxed and valued and ready to contemplate return visits. Grab their attention, don’t let go: Make your online and in-person offers so irresistible your guests would kick themselves for not jumping right in! Make way for more Filipino visitors: After pressing concerted effort since 2019, my colleagues and I have attained a better than even chance of adding the Philippines to the official list of countries whose passport holders may legally enter Guam visa-free. The Philippines is Destination Guam’s primary expansion market, and my contacts in Washington, D.C. and at Philippine Airlines are now gaining substantial traction towards attaining visa-free status for our beloved kababayans. Furthermore, I encourage all tourism trade executives in our region to explore the countless underrepresented travel demographics that are already highly accessible through the Department of Homeland Security’s Guam-CNMI Visa Waiver Program. This U.S.-sanctioned advantage allows the citizens of a dozen nations the privilege of entering Guam and the Northern Marianas without a visa, including visitors from Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Nauru, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom. And it is through this very program that we hope to add the Philippines to the list as soon as possible. Long haul As the Asia-Pacific region’s relatively young, middle-income jetsetters and their families mature and make more money, they are likely to pour more time, wealth and resources into Guam if they have an exceptionally good time every time they visit. So, our longer term priority must be to seed a succession of qualitative experiences into every step of their itineraries, from charting their trips to engaging with us as outstanding hosts here on the ground while making their return trips as enjoyable as possible, too. We’ve reached a strategic inflection point in global tourism. We must respond decisively to disruptive change. Now is our chance to transform mass affluent travelers into loyal fans of Destination Guam USA. We can do this by offering them on-message deluxe choices that won’t break the bank, but that will nevertheless help convince them that a little extra expense is worth the investment of learning to appreciate our fascinating CHamoru culture as well as our island’s unique brand of hospitality. Today’s highly determined travelers are a good test market and represent a bridge for Guam’s long-held goal of entertaining wealthier, more selective guests. Former Gov. Carl T.C. San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance Out For Season With Broken Ankle That Needs Surgery USA TODAY
San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance Out For Season With Broken Ankle That Needs Surgery – USA TODAY https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/san-francisco-49ers-qb-trey-lance-out-for-season-with-broken-ankle-that-needs-surgery-usa-today/ Trey Lance’s season has ended abruptly. Lance broke his ankle during the San Francisco 49ers’ 27-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, coach Kyle Shanahan announced postgame. The second-year quarterback is scheduled to have surgery on Monday that will sideline him for the rest of the season.  “I’m real happy about the win, but it’s a little sobering once you get into the locker room and see (Trey Lance),” Shanahan said. “I’m hurting for him.” Lance’s injury occurred when he was hit low after he took a read-option and ran the football between the tackles in the first quarter. Lance, 22, was writhing in pain on the grass before he was carted off the field by the 49ers’ medical staff. He did not return.  A SPIRITED ENDING: Bucs-Saints brawl as defense helps Tampa Bay pull away in fourth quarter NFL NEWSLETTER: Sign up now for exclusive content sent to your inbox Lance was 2-of-3 passing for 30 yards. He also had three rushes for 13 yards. Jimmy Garoppolo, whom Lance replaced as the team’s starting QB this season, subbed in for Lance. The veteran quarterback finished with 154 passing yards, one touchdown pass and one rushing TD.  “I thought (Jimmy Garoppolo) did a real good job coming off the bench and made some real key throws,” Shanahan said. “I’m real proud of Jimmy. How he came in and was ready for the moment and helped us get a win.”  Now Garoppolo will be asked to resume a position he is all too familiar with as the 49ers starting quarterback. The 49ers originally acquired Garoppolo in a trade with the New England Patriots in 2017. Garoppolo helped lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl LIV appearance, and he was the starting quarterback for a Niners team that advanced to the NFC Championship game last season. Despite previously helping the 49ers get to Super Bowl LIV and last year’s NFC Championship game, the 49ers decided to elevate Lance to the starting role this year. Going into Sunday, Lance had compiled 767 passing yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions in seven career games. San Francisco traded up in the 2021 NFL draft to select Lance. This Week On Crypto Twitter: Ethereum Merges Hoskinson Gets Salty Concerns Over Centralized Staking Decrypt
This Week On Crypto Twitter: Ethereum Merges, Hoskinson Gets Salty, Concerns Over Centralized Staking – Decrypt https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/this-week-on-crypto-twitter-ethereum-merges-hoskinson-gets-salty-concerns-over-centralized-staking-decrypt/ Illustration by Mitchell Preffer for Decrypt It was merge week. Ethereum’s long-awaited overhaul was finalized without a hitch, but there was no sudden influx of capital, either. Ethereum’s price actually fell 8% to below $1,500 on Thursday, the day of the merge. At the time of writing it trades for $1,376, about 22% cheaper than it was last Sunday.  A day before the merge, Ethereum’s co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared a graph from etherchain.org showing the network’s hash rate has maintained consistency, despite negative predictions from certain forecasters.  Looks like the “hashrate will drop weeks before the merge due to miners rushing to sell ahead of everyone else” thesis has been proven completely false. I’m a bit surprised! I argued against a 50% drop but definitely expected like 5-10%. pic.twitter.com/l9OpT8fPFl — vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) September 14, 2022 The following day, Thursday, Buterin broke the news that the network’s transition to proof-of-stake (PoS) was complete:  And we finalized! Happy merge all. This is a big moment for the Ethereum ecosystem. Everyone who helped make the merge happen should feel very proud today. — vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) September 15, 2022 Beeple, the digital artist whose NFT collection “EVERYDAYS: THE FIRST 5000 DAYS” sold for an unprecedented $69.3 million through a Christie’s auction, ushered in the new era with a purple vision of Ethereum mining in the future: A blockchain developer named Miguel Piedrafita said that after the merge, Ethereum was 99.95% more energy efficient, becoming vastly greener than a typical tech company.  The upgrade even slightly outdid Ethereum’s energy projections. A report released on the day from the Crypto Carbon Ratings Institute (CCRI), commissioned by Ethereum-centric software firm ConsenSys, claims that Ethereum now uses approximately 99.99% less energy post-merge.  Former Ethereum co-founder Charles Hoskinson, who now heads competitor Cardano—which has a market cap of $16.4 billion—was feeling salty. He posted a meme likening the merge to a nightmare. When someone tweeted him asking where Cardano’s technology stands in relation to Ethereum, Hoskinson let rip with some flagrant self-promotion:  About three years ahead on research, two on engineering. They will one day figure out that slashing is a really really bad idea — Charles Hoskinson (@IOHK_Charles) September 15, 2022 Crypto market intelligence firm Santiment sounded a note of caution over how centralized Ethereum staking had become after the merge.  This was a common complaint. According to Martin Köppelmann, co-founder of DeFi platform Gnosis, popular crypto exchage Coinbase and liquidity staking pool Lido Finance together account for 42% of post-merge Ethereum validators, and the top seven entities control more than two thirds of the stake validating transactions. Köppelmann also ran a poll in which three quarters of 15,885 respondents agreed that Coinbase and Lido’s staking dominance “needs to change.”  Alex Svanevik, the CEO of crypto analytics company Nansen, noted a sudden huge influx of Ethereum into exchanges.  Huge inflow to exchanges coming from: 1) Nexo: 450,000 ETH to Binance. 2) Multisig owner: 288,442 ETH to Bitfinex. That’s $1.2B in two transactions pic.twitter.com/UMOAh0mXmK — Alex Svanevik (@ASvanevik) September 15, 2022 Finally Daniel Buchner, a technical product lead at Microsoft’s Decentralized Identity initiative, likened the merge to Groundhog Day: Feeling some déjà vu, help me out: today folks are celebrating an ‘introduction’ of PoS, a consensus system known for 20 years we’ve long had examples of, which has numerous flaws cypherpunks carefully avoided in developing PoW. Why is this being advertised as new or innovative? pic.twitter.com/Ir0EJCQfnX — Daniel Ƀrrr (@csuwildcat) September 15, 2022 Michael Saylor… It was also a big week for MicroStrategy’s former CEO and current executive chairman Michael Saylor. It wasn’t so much what he said, but what people were saying about him. On Tuesday, Bitcoin enthusiast Udi Wertheimer trolled his 114.3k followers with believable fake news.  BREAKING: MICROSTRATEGY HAS PURCHASED AN ADDITIONAL 1,143 BTC AT AN AVERAGE PRICE OF $22,958 USD — Udi Wertheimer (@udiWertheimer) September 13, 2022 Fake or not, it would be wrong to say that Saylor isn’t considering swelling Microstrategy’s 129,699 Bitcoin war chest (worth $2.6 billion at today’s price). Last week, an SEC filing revealed that MicroStrategy has entered an agreement with investment bank Cowen & Co. to sell up to $500 million in shares of its Class A common stock. It may use the proceeds to buy more Bitcoin.  On Friday, the White House released new guidance on crypto. Billed as a “First-Ever Comprehensive Framework for Responsible Development of Digital Assets,” the new guidance uses the recommendations and conclusions of various government agencies after six months of studying the crypto industry.  Saylor shared a lengthy article by crypto investor Nic Carter denouncing the crypto mining climate study done by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Carter claims the main weaknesses of the study were unreliable sources, a lack of perspectives from industry experts, and no novel data.  The latest White House Crypto Climate & Energy Report is full of misinformation generated and promulgated by unscrupulous crypto promoters in order to undermine #Bitcoin and champion their own interests. @nic__carter expertly debunks the propaganda.https://t.co/kW7sictekQ — Michael Saylor (@saylor) September 16, 2022 Still, Saylor doesn’t represent everyone, according to “independent Ethereum educator” Anthony Sassano.  Saylor is not a good flag bearer for this industry He is an absolute embarrassment — sassal.eth (@sassal0x) September 16, 2022 Finally, Terra CEO Do Kwon broke his silence on Saturday after headlines emerged earlier in the week saying that a South Korean court had issued an arrest warrant for him for violating capital market rules. The Korean Ministry of Finance also announced that it was seeking to void his passport. He told followers he’s not on the lam.     We are in the process of defending ourselves in multiple jurisdictions – we have held ourselves to an extremely high bar of integrity, and look forward to clarifying the truth over the next few months — Do Kwon (@stablekwon) September 17, 2022 Stay on top of crypto news, get daily updates in your inbox.

But we also join the management team of the company so it’s not just putting money in. We put people in as well. But in the broader community, access to capital is one of the barriers to growth for us and that’s why we’re building MTA InvestCo to make early-stage capital more available for more companies.” Advertisement 3 This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Chaired by Bell MTS and Western Canada Vice Chair Ryan Klassen, MTA InvestCo has already made a handful of investments into MTA client companies ranging in size from $10,000 to $400,000. MTA InvestCo hopes to lead $2 million to $4 million per year of direct investments into Manitoba’s most exciting start-ups and scale-ups.  “Early-stage technology commercialization does have a fairly high failure rate so it is really hard to take a good idea and move it into a functioning business,” said Ring. “But when it can be done successfully, the businesses do have great opportunities to scale and have a profound impact on our economy.” Providing capital is only part of what MTA does. “What MTA will do is provide advice, infrastructure and capital,” he said. “If you want to bake a cake, you need flour, eggs and milk. But if you just put the flour in, you’re not going to get too far with the cake. Often times, we deal with founders and entrepreneurs who need help developing and navigating the commercialization process so the application of our management skills helps the companies be more successful and the availability of capital also helps them execute on what they need to.” Advertisement 4 This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. What they do is more along the line of angel investors than venture capitalists, Ring said. Angel investors tend to come in earlier when a company is riskier, perhaps doesn’t have a full management team or even customers but has a good idea. They help companies get off the ground while venture capital is the next stage in the process where a company needs funding to expand and grow their business. “Our goal by putting angel capital in is really to make sure the company builds roots here in the province and they stay here,” said Ring. “So it’s the exact opposite of trying to take over the company. It’s trying to build relationships here in Manitoba. Get the company to have 12 or 15 employees so it’s really hard for that company to move to different markets as they grow.” Advertisement 5 This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. With roots dating back to 2004, they started doing business as MTA in 2012. Their most notable and famous success story was SkipTheDishes, the online food delivery service. “They came to us with two employees and we were with them through that high-growth phase,” said Ring. Over the last five years, companies supported by MTA have generated over $800 million in business, employing 2,000 employees. One of the companies that MTA has helped is Triple 3 Biotech – which manufactures high-quality type II collagen used to reduce joint pain associated with osteoarthritis which has been working to break into the Chinese market – whose CEO Ab Freig has no doubts where they would be without MTA. “MTA helped us throughout the process, helped us with commercialization of our collagen, helped us with providing something as small of (office) space, (as well as) guidance and support and advisory services,” said Freig. Advertisement 6 This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. “We would not be where we are without the assistance of MTA.” In addition to offices on Market Avenue in Winnipeg’s Exchange District, MTA is working to transform 50 Provencher, one of Winnipeg’s most iconic buildings, into a technology and digitally rich world class networking and event centre that can be a vibrant hub to their downtown success. As part of the revitalization process and recognizing the important link the bridge provides between St. Boniface and downtown, MTA is branding the building the International Centre for Innovation (ICI), a play on the French word for “here” and intended to honour the intention of the bridge which was to build collaborations and foster a welcoming destination moving forward. A grand opening of the building is planned for later this year. gdawkins@postmedia.com Twitter: @SunGlenDawkins

A Ukrainian shelling attack killed four people in downtown Donetsk on Saturday. According to the city’s Mayor Alexey Kulemzin, fragments of munitions for Caesar howitzers were found. By JON GAMBRELL – Associated Press KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy promised his country there would be no letup in the counteroffensive that has reclaimed towns and cities from Russian troops, as shelling continued Sunday across a wide stretch of Ukraine. Zelenskyy ran through a list of towns that Ukraine has taken back in its lightning push across the northeast. “Maybe now it seems to some of you that after a series of victories we have a certain lull,” he said in his nightly video address. “But this is not a lull. This is preparation for the next series… Because Ukraine must be free — all of it.” Ukraine’s military command said its forces secured the eastern bank of the Oskil River on Saturday. The river, which flows south from Russia into Ukraine, had been a natural break in the newly emerged front lines since Kyiv’s counteroffensive began. As Russian shells hit towns and cities over the weekend, the British defense ministry warned that Moscow is likely to increase attacks on civilian targets as it suffers battlefield defeats. “In the last seven days, Russia has increased its targeting of civilian infrastructure even where it probably perceives no immediate military effect,” the ministry said in an online briefing. “As it faces setbacks on the front lines, Russia has likely extended the locations it is prepared to strike in an attempt to directly undermine the morale of the Ukrainian people and government.” Russian fire killed four medics attempting to evacuate a psychiatric hospital in the Kharkiv region on Saturday, said governor Oleh Syniehubov. Two patients were wounded in the attack in Strelecha, he said. Overnight shelling also hit a hospital in Mykolaiv, a significant Black Sea port, regional governor Vitaliy Kim said. And five people had died over the past day in Russian attacks in the Donetsk region, one of two Ukrainian regions that Russia recognizes as sovereign states, governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said. The separatist forces that control much of Donetsk said Ukrainian shelling of a prisoner-of-war colony in Olenivka killed one prisoner and injured four. More than 50 POWs were reported killed in a July attack on the Olenivka prison; Russian and Ukrainian authorities blame each other. A Washington-based think tank, the Institute for the Study of War, said Russian forces in Donetsk continue to conduct “meaningless operations” on villages as opposed to reinforcing the front line. A top Vatican envoy and his entourage came under fire as they were distributing humanitarian supplies in Ukraine, the Vatican news service said on Sunday. It reported no injuries. The incident took place near the city of Zaporizhzhia on Saturday, and forced Vatican Almoner Cardinal Konrad Krajewski and others to take cover. “For the first time in my life, I didn’t know where to run. Because it is not enough to run, you have to know where to go,” said the Polish-born cardinal, whose office makes charitable contributions in the pope’s name. Three people were wounded in nighttime shelling of Nikopol, across the river from Europe’s largest nuclear power station, said regional governor Valentyn Reznichenko. The six-reactor Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant was captured by Russian forces in March, but is operated by Ukrainian engineers. Its last reactor was switched off a week ago after repeated power failures because shelling put crucial safety systems at risk. Meanwhile, prosecutors in Kharkiv are accusing Russia of torturing civilians in one village that was recently freed. In an online statement, they said they found a basement where Russian forces allegedly tortured prisoners in Kozacha Lopan, near the border with Russia. In images they released, they showed a Russian military TA-57 telephone with additional wires and alligator clips attached to it. Ukrainian officials have accused Russian forces of using the Soviet-era radio telephones as a power source to shock prisoners during interrogation. It was not immediately possible to verify the Ukrainians’ claims. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. What Should Be In A First Aid Kit? Your Travel Tips And Packing Essentials – TAG24 NEWS https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/what-should-be-in-a-first-aid-kit-your-travel-tips-and-packing-essentials-tag24-news/ When you are on the road, there is nothing more important than a First Aid Kit. Here’s what should be in a First Aid Kit, a luggage essential. By Clara Danneberg, Evan Williams Going out into the great unknown (i.e. outside your house) can be an adventure, but you could find yourself in a tricky situation. It’s always good to be prepared, and with this guide to first aid kit essentials, you definitely will be! A well-stocked first-aid kit can save a vacation gone wrong.  © 123RF / Mukhina1 Have you ever left your house in the morning, or headed to the beach or on a hike, and not been sure if you have everything you need? With a change of location comes a change in safety, and it’s good to always be prepared – just in case. Enter: the humble first aid kit, the ultimate safeguard against injury. Many people forget to bring this crucial piece with them when they leave the house, and we’re here to help. It’s not hard to put together your own first aid kit, and it can be life-saving if you have one nearby. Here are some tips for healthy travel, what should be in a first aid kit, and why it’s so important to have one at the ready. What is a first aid kit? A first aid kit is a vital piece of equipment if someone gets hurt when out and about. These helpful little kits contain an assortment of things that are helpful in the event of an injury, including things like Band-Aids, ointments, and bandages. Whether you are driving somewhere, going for a walk, heading to the beach, or hiking up a mountain, this is a must-have item. Of course, you’ll never be able to bring the full-extent of your medicine cabinet with you, but you can get darn-well close. When going on vacation, a first aid kit is especially important. In this case, keep these things in mind when putting one together: Destination of your vacation Duration of your trip Type of journey (e.g. by plane or car) Your travel itinerary The season in which you are traveling The health of all travelers going with you The first thing, of course, is to remember that you must take all the medication that you or your travel partners need on a daily basis, as well as the normal contents of a first aid kit. Different first aid kits for hiking, babies, dogs, and cars First aid kits have different functions depending on the trip. If you are hiking, then you’re going to need different things than you would need at the beach. A pet is going to require a different first aid kit as compared to a baby or child. Always remember to adapt what you’re bringing to the situation, and keep in mind what you’re going to be doing when you pack your first aid kit. What is in a first aid kit? Here’s a checklist There are many things that need to be included in a first aid kit, depending on what you are going to be doing and where you are going. Make sure to think about your personal needs, as well – do you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or allergies? If yes, then always remember to bring the necessary equipment and medicine for your condition. The most essential medicines to include in a first aid kit include the following: Medication against diarrhea (electrolyte powder, or medication with the active ingredient loperamide) Medicine for digestive problems like constipation and heartburn Pills to fight against vomiting and travel sickness, or nonmedical solutions like gum Painkillers and anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen or paracetamol) Medicines to treat cold symptoms such as a sore throat, a cough, or a runny nose All of your personal, medically necessary medications Make sure to include these remedies for wound care: Disinfectant Wound and healing ointment Medication for the treatment of sports injuries Cooling compresses suitable for travel Bandages and gauze Sterile wound compresses, burn dressing packs Adhesive and blister Band-Aids Disposable gloves Scissors Other medicines: Medication for cold sores Ear drops Decongestant nasal spray Eye drops High-quality sunscreen Cooling ointments or lotions for sunburn Drops or ointment to reduce the itch caused by insect bites, preferably containing an antihistamine Insect spray Broad-spectrum antibiotics Antimalarial medication if heading to a country that has malaria (This will require a prescription) Things to add to a first-aid kit: Clinical thermometer Band-Aid spray Tweezers Tick tongs Hand and drinking water disinfectant Condoms or “morning-after” pills Insurance documents Mosquito net Covid-19 rapid tests Keep in mind: When traveling on a plane, you will only be allowed to carry on about 3 ounces of liquid or less. With this being the case, make sure to put your first aid kit in your checked baggage. This is not an exhaustive list. Each individual will need different things, based on different circumstances. For example: If someone is going to a country that has no risk of mosquito-born diseases, they do not need to bring a mosquito net with them. It’s incredibly important to remember to bring any medications you may need with you on a trip. If you have more serious health problems, you should consult your doctor and pharmacist about what you should and shouldn’t bring. What you include in your first-aid kit depends on where you’re headed.  © 123RF / belchonock The best first aid kit supplies for children When you head off with your family, you’re going to want to be especially prepared. Children are more susceptible to illness and disease, they can struggle with changing climatic conditions, and may reject unfamiliar food. All of these factors can present a significant challenge to a young immune system. In a first aid kit that you’re taking with you on a trip with kids, it’s important to have suitable remedies packed for things like diarrhea, nausea, or fevers. These are some of the more common afflictions you can expect, so it’s best to be prepared. For diarrhea, make sure that you are bringing electrolyte solutions, and all medication should be in pill or liquid form as they are the easiest and safest to transport. If your child gets especially sick, take them immediately to a doctor or hospital. A well-stocked first aid kit is especially important for a family with kids.  © Unsplash / Vitolda Klein 10 first aid kit tips and travel advice Ultimately, a first aid kit is designed to save your life and keep your comfortable when trouble strikes. It is packed with incredibly useful medicines, bandages, and ointments, and is a must-have luggage item when you travel. On top of that, when you travel, there are a few more things to keep in mind. Here are some tips and tricks: Tip 1: Always carry spare medication if it is medically necessary for your health. The most important medications you need to take should always be placed in your carry on bag, so that they can be accessed in the event of a lost suitcase or a delay. It is also a good idea to keep medications in different pieces of luggage so that if you lose the bag that contains your medicine, you will still have a backup. Tip 2: Bring plenty of reserve medication in case you get delayed when returning. If you find your journey delayed, you could run the risk of running out of medication. As a result, it is a good idea to bring more medication than you will need for the duration of your vacation. Include your doctor and pharmacist’s contact information easily accessible in case of emergency. Tip 3: Make sure your medication’s most important information is written down and accessible. As you want to save space, it is likely that you won’t take your medication’s packaging. As a result, you should familiarize yourself with its use and possible side effects of the medication and write them down on a piece of paper in an abbreviated summary, or take a photo. Label all pills and keep this summary or photo in an easy-to-access place. It’s a good idea to keep a small first aid kit on hand whenever you head to the beach.  © 123RF / Mukhina1 Tip 4: Always store medicine properly. Take note of how your medication should be stored properly to avoid it becoming expired or not working properly. Some types of medication will need to be protected from direct sunlight or high temperatures, and as a result, it is a good idea to store them in a cooler box. This will regulate the temperature of the medicinal contents. Unless you have liquid medication in a more than 3 oz bottle, make sure that you take your medication with you in your hand luggage. Tip 5: Remember to check the legal regulations of a vacation country before taking medication with you. It might seem obvious, but you should bring a medical certificate with you for any prescription medications you bring with you. Diabetics, for example, can use one to be allowed to take their insulin syringe onboard an airplane. Additionally, many countries have different regulations when it comes to narcotics. It is advisable to have every piece of information you need readily available in case there is a problem at the border or airport. Tip 6: Always bring your vaccination details with you. This is especially important nowadays with Covid-19, but it has always been the case that some countries require travelers to have specific vaccinations to enter. In addition, if you end up in a hospital for whatever reason, it is incredibly important for the doctors, nurses, and admin staff to have access to your vaccination records. To get access to your coronavirus, yellow fever, rabies, hepatitis B, and other vaccination details, contact your doctor. Masks are still mandatory in many countries.  © Unsplash / Victor He Tip 7: Update yourself on the latest hygiene and social distancing regulations in your destination country. Before leaving on your trip, you should make sure ...

Drive is still alive.  Pinned Burrow should look to get out of the pocket quickly if he feels that initial pressure. Good things may happen. He’s good at extending the play.  Pinned Cowboys didn’t get pressure on Burrow on first down and he took a shot downfield. This is certainly not the time to stop pressuring the QB. More steam.  Pinned Pinned Pinned That’s definitely a potential turning point for the Bengals. Cowboys were driving in enemy territory and Dalton Schultz fumbled away possession. It’s only an eight-point game, but it feels like more. Can Burrow buy some time to operate behind this offensive line and lead a scoring drive?  Pinned Pinned Pinned This is absurd. Burrow can’t do anything with the pressure Dallas is getting on him. Tamas Kadar: CEO At SEON Comments On Fraud In The Metaverse, Latest NFT, Fintech Trends – Crowdfund Insider – Crowdfund Insider https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/tamas-kadar-ceo-at-seon-comments-on-fraud-in-the-metaverse-latest-nft-fintech-trends-crowdfund-insider-crowdfund-insider/ We recently connected with Tamas Kadar, CEO and co-founder at SEON., which aims to harness the power of AI to protect your business from fraud, get a 360° view of customers, and increase conversion rates. Kadar talked about the latest issues involving e-commerce fraud. His company just closed a $94 million Series B round in April and is focused on expanding their fraud prevention services for U.S. businesses. During our conversation, Tamas talked about fraud in the Metaverse, the latest in crypto-related developments, NFTs, blockchain & fraud, and BNPL fraud. Our discussion with Tamas Kadar is shared below. Crowdfund Insider: Crypto exchanges are already considered high risk. What are some ways companies are combating crypto exchange fraud? Tamas Kadar: At SEON, we understand the risks of cryptocurrency exchange fraud better than most. Along with my co-founder, Bence Jendruszak, I started a cryptocurrency exchange some years ago, while at university. Not long after, the exchange was targeted by fraudsters, which led to us building the first iteration of what would later become SEON. In the years since, crypto exchange fraud has become even more rife. For the most part, fraudsters use stolen credit card numbers to purchase cryptocurrencies, which triggers chargeback requests from the legitimate cardholder. Fraudsters also use fake IDs to bypass any KYC checks that might otherwise stop them. Crypto exchange platforms need to have protocols in place, which allow them to: ● Safely onboard genuine users ● Process fiat payments to buy crypto ● Secure storage and transactions One of the best ways to do this is to improve the ID & verification techniques within the sign-up process. However, it’s important to do this in a way that doesn’t add friction to the customer journey. This is often easier said than done, especially as crypto users tend to not like giving away personal data as it goes against some of the sector’s core principles. That’s where data enrichment tools come in. Such tools allow crypto exchanges to get more info about their customers, without having to ask for it. Data enrichment solutions, such as the one we offer at SEON, allow companies to get a full picture of who their users are before they sign up, and in doing so, can identify risky actors before they’re able to commit fraud. Crowdfund Insider: How is the metaverse creating new forms of fraud and deception? Tamas Kadar: There is always a new opportunity to scam, and fraudsters are always ready to figure out how – especially when it involves a monetary transaction. As such, the metaverse offers an abundance of potential new avenues for fraud. Primarily, many metaverse solutions are vulnerable as they’re unable to stop people establishing more than one account. Having multiple accounts on a metaverse platform allows fraudsters to take advantage of ‘free credit’, discounts or money back promotions designed for new users. Simply put, this may seem like an easy and even innocent loophole, but setting up multiple accounts to benefit from promotions is still fraud. Likewise, metaverse platforms must watch out for influencer fraud, which has previously affected social media platforms, like Twitter. This type of fraud can result in people following fraudulent links or entering sensitive data to enter promotions they believe to be endorsed by trusted or well-known, established users. Crowdfund Insider: New tech brings opportunistic bad actors. What are the risks of NFT fraud and how do you stop it? Tamas Kadar: It’s still only early days in the world of NFTs, but you’re beginning to see the size and scope of the nascent sector’s fraud problem. NFT fraud can take many forms, whether it’s people minting artwork they have no legal ownership of, to laundering money through fake NFT sales. Sadly, there’s no ‘silver’ bullet solution on offer to fix all of these issues. Preventing NFT fraud requires action from all involved parties. For one, end users need to become even more aware about the risks of fraud and ensure they’re always doing their due diligence before purchasing NFTs. Similarly, companies dealing with NFTs should look to refortify fraud prevention protocols to ensure they’re getting the best protection. In practice, this can mean layering existing defence systems with things like two-factor authentication and machine learning to boot out inauthentic users, bots and high-risk ‘online personalities’. As with the metaverse, enabling browser and device fingerprinting can also make a huge difference in aiding this effort. Crowdfund Insider: Why is money laundering a problem in crypto? Tamas Kadar: It’s a big problem, and cryptocurrency firms are now under increasing pressure to meet new anti-money laundering (AML) regulations. If they fail to do so, companies in the sector are liable for big fines, legal issues, and damage to their business reputation. The good news is that transaction monitoring solutions now offer a way to mitigate the risk. Full end-to-end fraud tools, like that provided by SEONallow companies in the crypto space to monitor user and transaction data. In turn, this data can be logged, scored via fraud detection risk rules, and used to decide if a business should flag the account as a potential risk, before automating next steps. In fact, our solution is able to check an individual’s digital footprint in real time, analyzing more than 50 social and online platforms to ensure new accounts can be verified effectively. Crowdfund Insider: BNPL is attracting the attention of cybercriminals and fraudsters. What is the best way for merchants to reduce the risk of BNPL fraud? Tamas Kadar: BNPL companies inherently take a risk with every new customer they onboard. Like with crypto, fraud in this area can take many forms, but there are some simple measures, which can be implemented to reduce its success. As with everything else, gathering data during the onboarding stage makes fraud prevention swifter and simpler. Most BNPL companies probably already perform basic KYC checks and fast credit scoring. However, it’s important to move to more robust tools like device fingerprinting, IP address checks and velocity rules. I’d also recommend that companies take advantage of digital footprint analysis, which allows them to find out a wealth of information without any additional friction. Finally, considering recent measures, it’s probably now time for companies to go even further and to utilise data enrichment solutions to help them build more complete pictures of users, without adding extra friction to the onboarding process. In doing so, companies are able to get more information about their customers from basic points of information.

Since Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4 is officially live, there are some brand new weapons to enjoy. Here are all of the new weapons in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4. A new liquid metal called chrome has entered Fortnite and infected some of the guns. The first gun ruined, or enhanced, by chrome is the EvoChrome Shotgun. The EvoChrome Shotgun has a wide-spread shot but is very powerful at close range. Next up is the EvoChrome Burst Rifle. This new rifle is a two-shot burst weapon that, like the shotgun, can be devastating if you land your shots. Both the EvoChrome Shotgun and the EvoChrome Burst Rifle have the ability to evolve, or become upgraded versions of themselves, with use. All you need to do to upgrade these weapons is deal damage to opponents and get kills with the weapon, which will also help you grind XP. The EvoChrome Burst Rifle and the EvoChrome Shotgun can easily be found in chrome chests which are easily found at the new POIs, which happen to be some of the best drop sites in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4. There is also a new gadget called Chrome Splash that allows you to enter chrome form and chrome walls so you can phase through them. Chrome Splash works best when used in close quarters since lobbing a Chrome Splash far away or at an enemy won’t do you any good. While the EvoChrome Shotgun and Burst Rifle are cool and all, you can also now pet your pet wolf or boar in Fortnite. Ethereum Merge Hard Forks Reveal Competing Proof-Of-Work Projects – Decrypt https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/ethereum-merge-hard-forks-reveal-competing-proof-of-work-projects-decrypt/ The Ethereum merge removed the network’s reliance on miners without a hitch, but the path forward for those that decided to stay with proof of work is not crystal clear. Many Ethereum miners who wanted to keep mining joined a prominent faction led by Chandler Guo to create ETHPoW and ETHW. While their hard fork hit some speed bumps, it’s running and trading at $5.26, down 35% in the past 24 hours as of this writing, according to CoinMarketCap. But before there was ETHPoW, there was EthereumFair, another faction committed to preserving the proof-of-work model for Ethereum with ETF, formerly ETHF. But EthereumFair has garnered only a fraction of the attention of EthereumPoW. EthereumFair claims on Twitter that it was the first PoW token to become forked from Ethereum. The account, which was created in January 2020, has about 14 thousand followers. Despite a two year head start, that’s less than the Twitter account for EthPoW, which amassed just over 15 thousand followers since it was created in July. EthereumFair is led by a group of Chinese miners, with its core documentation provided in the Chinese language. Only this weekend did organizers focus on creating Telegram groups for different languages. Welcome to establish telegram groups in various languages, we will give incentives and support. — EthereumFair(#ETF) #ETHPOW #ETHEREUMPOW (@EthereumFair) September 17, 2022 According to EthereumFair’s block explorer, ETF has 6.7 million total transactions and 1.8 million wallet addresses. The currency is currently trading at $6.43, down 30% in the past 24 hours as of this writing, according to CoinMarketCap. By comparison, ETHW has logged 1.7 billion total transactions, with tokens held in 86.3 million addresses. Meanwhile, Ethereum Classic, created back in 2015 during a separate fork, saw its hash rate spike following the merge as miners transitioned over to mining that currency as well, according to 2miners.com. The most prominent exchange backer of ETF was Poloniex, which first announced that it would support EthereumFair “based on the market situation, consensus of users and the community.” Poloniex, which also renamed ETHF to ETF, subsequently added ETHW support as well. Users that purchase ETF on Poloniex won’t have to pay any fees if they’re exchanging Tron’s USDD stablecoin for the cryptocurrency, which doesn’t apply to purchases made with other stablecoins including Tether’s USDT or Ethereum. The exchange ranks 23rd on CoinMarketCap’s list of top exchanges, seeing $32 million in trading volume over the past 24 hours. The coin is also currently being traded on crypto exchanges Huobi and BitCoke. Among the exchanges trading ETHW are OKX, XT.COM, Deepcoin, Bybit, and CoinW. How To Protect Your Phone And Data Privacy At U.S. Customs – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/how-to-protect-your-phone-and-data-privacy-at-u-s-customs-the-washington-post/ International travelers may know U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) can scroll through your phone in a “random search.” But new details paint a picture of broad and messy data collection that puts your privacy at risk. Data copied from devices at entry points into the United States — including airports and border crossings — gets saved for 15 years in a database searchable by thousands of CBP employees without a warrant, The Washington Post’s Drew Harwell reported this week. The data includes contacts, call logs, messages and photos from phones, tablets and computers, according to CBP. It could also contain social media posts, medical and financial information, or internet browsing history, according to a report from the New York think tank Brennan Center for Justice. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) wrote a Sept. 15 letter asking the commissioner of the CBP to stop allowing “indiscriminate rifling through Americans’ private records without suspicion of a crime.” It’s unclear to what extent federal agents can use the copied data because there are few meaningful safeguards, said Saira Hussain, a staff attorney at the privacy rights nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation. Hussain has argued in court that CBP’s current data collection practices violate Americans’ constitutional protections. Based on her interviews with search subjects, agents often profile people from Muslim or Muslim-adjacent communities, she said, but these searches impact people from “all walks of American life.” “You don’t have to have committed a felony to want to keep some parts of your life private from meddling government agents,” said Nathan Freed Wessler, deputy project director of the Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project at the American Civil Liberties Union. “That could be medical diagnoses, mental health struggles, romantic associations, information about our children, you name it.” A CBP spokesman said in a statement that the agency searches devices “in accordance with statutory and regulatory authorities” and that its guidelines make sure each search is “exercised judiciously, responsibly, and consistent with the public trust.” Not keen on potentially opening your contacts, call logs and messages to thousands of government-employed strangers? Here’s what you can do before hitting customs: Unlike other law enforcement, border authorities don’t need a warrant to search your device. They may conduct a basic search — in which they scroll through your device inspecting texts, photos or anything else they can easily access — even if they don’t suspect you of wrongdoing. But if an agent suspects you pose a “national security concern,” they can run an advanced search using a digital forensics tool to copy the data from your device. How you prepare to cross the border with your devices depends on what risks you’re willing to tolerate, said Nathan Freed Wessler, deputy project director of the Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project at the American Civil Liberties Union. If you’re more worried about agents rifling through your messages and photos in a basic search, removing files from your device would do the trick. If you’re a political dissident, human rights activist, journalist or anyone else looking to avoid government surveillance or overreach, your focus will likely be preventing agents from accessing your device at all. If you’re an American citizen, you can refuse to unlock your devices for CBP agents and still enter the country. (This may not be clear from the information sheet agents are supposed to give you during the search, which says the process is “mandatory.”) If you decline to cooperate, CBP can hold onto your device. It says detention generally shouldn’t last longer than five days, but Hussain said she’s spoken with people who didn’t get their devices back for months. Noncitizens, meanwhile, aren’t guaranteed entry if they decline to unlock their devices. Travel with few devices and turn them off beforehand The fewer devices you travel with, the fewer opportunities for searches, Wessler said. Consider adopting a separate phone or laptop for traveling without sensitive data saved. Power down devices before going through customs. This guards against advanced search tools that may bypass the screen lock on devices left powered on, according to EFF. Encrypted data gets scrambled into a format unreadable to people who don’t have the code — in this case, a password. iOS, Android, Windows and MacOS all come with built in full device encryption options. Most contemporary smartphones are encrypted by default (make sure you lock your device). Here are general directions for Windows and MacOS. The quickest methods to unlock your device — such face ID or a weak passcode — are also the least secure. If you decline to unlock your device for a search, CBP may try to unlock it themselves, Wessler said. A strong password with both letters and numbers, or a passcode with at least six digits will make this harder. CBP guidelines instruct agents to review only the data that’s stored on your device itself — not all the information apps like Facebook and Gmail send to the cloud. If you consent to a search, flipping your device into airplane mode will limit the inspection to what’s saved or cached. You may choose to move your data to a cloud storage provider — such as iCloud, Google or Microsoft OneDrive — and then wipe or factory reset your device. This would protect your data from a basic visual search. But be aware: Most methods of file deletion leave behind traces a forensic search would uncover. Furthermore, walking through customs with a blank device could arouse suspicion and make you more likely to become a target, Hussain said. If you’ve got sensitive photos, messages or other data easily visible on your device, move it somewhere private, such as a hidden or password-protected folder. (I’m begging you not to accidentally show nudes to a customs agent — or anyone else. Here’s how to hide them.) Consider where you enter the country Different states have different laws governing what CBP can inspect at U.S. entry points. In Arizona, for example, CBP can only search devices without a warrant if they’re looking for specific digital contraband. If you want to protect your privacy, it might be worth flying into a state with more stringent boundaries for CBP.

Turnovers Are Texas Techs Achilles Heel In NC State Loss Sports Illustrated
Turnovers Are Texas Tech’s Achilles Heel In NC State Loss – Sports Illustrated https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/turnovers-are-texas-techs-achilles-heel-in-nc-state-loss-sports-illustrated/ Saturday was Texas Tech’s first loss under head coach Joey McGuire, and it stung. On top of the 27-14 loss to NC State, the Red Raiders were dealt a devastating blow when linebacker Bryce Ramirez suffered a gruesome leg injury. It was a night where seemingly nothing could go right for this Tech squad, and now it has the Texas Longhorns coming to Lubbock next weekend in another tough matchup. But if they want to take down their in-state rival, the Red Raiders are going to need to cut down on turnovers. Texas Tech has lost the turnover battle in each of its first three games – including to (FCS) Murray State. Sophomore quarterback Donovan Smith has been electrifying at times, but he’s also thrown five interceptions in two games as the starter. His backup, Behren Morton, also threw an interception last night and Tech finished the game with three interceptions and one lost fumble.  Outside of that, the Red Raiders actually looked pretty decent. They outgained NC State on offense 353 yards to 270 yards, had five more first downs (TTU 20, NC ST 15), and less penalty yardage. But factor in those four giveaways and tack on three failed fourth down conversions, and the free possessions for NC State really start to add up.  So many times it looked like Texas Tech was driving and could score, only to be foiled by a costly turnover. The ultimate gut punch came on a fourth-down try near the red zone when Smith was picked off by the Wolfpack’s Aydan White, who returned it 84-yards for a touchdown. That’s Texas Tech’s identity right now, pretty talented but very sloppy. One reason they throw so many picks is that the Red Raiders throw so much, period. Smith has attempted 94 passes over the course of his two starts, while Tech has only run the ball 99 times total all season, many of which have been quarterback keepers or scrambles by Smith. In fact, he’s the Red Raiders’ most used rusher by attempts (34 carries).  Such a lackluster ground game has to play a factor in the high turnover rate. If teams aren’t threatened by the run, then they don’t have to defend it. That makes it very difficult for any quarterback to find open holes in a defense. A lot of this starts up front with Tech’s offensive line, which needs to improve quickly. Solidifying that unit will make life easier for everyone, especially Smith. The Red Raiders will host the Longhorns next week in their biggest game of the year. A sell-out crowd is expected at AT&T Jones Stadium for that battle and McGuire will have his team ready. But if they want to get back in the win column, they’ll have to win the turnover battle at all costs.  Follow the Texas Tech Red Raiders Daily Blitz Podcast HERE Follow Red Raider Review on Facebook and Twitter! Western Alaska Confronts Damage After Historic Storm The Washington Post
Western Alaska Confronts Damage After Historic Storm – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/western-alaska-confronts-damage-after-historic-storm-the-washington-post/ Floodwaters began receding in Alaska on Sunday, revealing the damage after the remnants of a typhoon lashed the state with its fiercest storm in years. The full extent of the storm’s impact may not be clear for days, but residents across the state’s low-lying western coast are still grappling with water damage, power outages and other hazards. The impacted areas span well over 1,000 miles of coastline, including “some of the most remote areas of the United States,” according to Jeremy Zidek, public information officer with Alaska’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. “It’s a very large area and the damages across that area really vary quite a bit,” Zidek said. “Access to these areas is very difficult.” The storm is still ongoing in the northwest part of the state, Zidek said. No injuries or fatalities tied to the storm have been reported yet, but Alaska State Troopers are conducting a search for a young boy missing from Hooper Bay, one of the heavier-hit villages. For years, scientists have expressed concern that climate change has set the stage for greater impacts from large nontropical cyclones in Alaska. Warmer summers and oceans have caused a greater-than-normal seasonal loss of sea ice, which makes the region more vulnerable to ocean inundation. Gov. Mike Dunleavy (R) declared an emergency Saturday in the face of the “unprecedented” storm. Communities along the low-lying western coast saw severe flooding and violent winds. Roads — of which there few in the region — have been battered and washed away. The storm surge knocked out lines of communication, prompted evacuations and wrenched homes from their foundations. One unoccupied house drifted until it got stuck under the Snake River Bridge. The tide gauge in Nome, which is known for being the endpoint of the famed Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, showed water levels more than nine feet above normal levels early Saturday, exceeding the peak seen during ferocious storms in 2011 and 2004, according to the National Weather Service. A fire broke out Saturday at the Bering Sea Bar and Grill in Nome amid the heavy winds. An offshore ocean buoy reported waves at or above 35 feet for 12 hours, peaking at more than 50 feet, while winds gusted over 70 mph for 11 hours. Dozens of small, primarily Indigenous communities dotting the coast face unique challenges as they try to recover from the damage before winter comes, according to Rick Thoman, a climate specialist at the International Arctic Research Center. “All of these communities, there’s basically no road connections to any of them,” Thoman said. “It’s a very different setup than anywhere in the Lower 48.” Runways will have to be safely cleared before communities can receive critical supplies, Thoman said, as most goods are moved by air or by barge in the region. Without power, people with packed freezers risk losing their food for the upcoming season. “If your power plant goes out, you can’t get power from somewhere else if it isn’t a generator at your house,” Thoman said. The system punishing Alaska over the weekend was the remnants of Pacific Typhoon Merbok, which merged with a pair of nontropical storms as it veered toward the Bering Strait, the thin strip of water between Russia and Alaska. It’s not new for Alaska to be hit with the fallout from a former typhoon, Thoman said, but this one came fast and furious, taking a shorter path than usual. “This one was special because of how strong it developed,” Thoman said. It was also unusually massive, larger than Texas and almost as big as Alaska proper, according to Kaitlyn Lardeo, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Fairbanks. Most of the affected areas saw winds between 60 and 80 miles per hour, she said. “It’s important for people to understand that these things are possible for us,” Lardeo said. “It was devastating for a lot of communities.” Mark Springer, the mayor of Bethel, said his town, which is about 60 miles inland from the Bering Sea, is far enough away from the worst of the flooding to avoid much of the property damage. But the water is rising “boot high” in some places. Springer said he heard that villages lost their fish racks and smokehouses as well as the subsistence sheds where people keep their gear and motors. His social media timelines have been full of pictures of floodwaters and evacuations. Many boats floated away and sank, cutting off another vital means of transportation. “Boats are going to be scattered all over the tundra,” Springer said. “In some cases, they’re going to have to wait until the ground freezes and go over with snow machines and try to drag them.” Massive storm surge and gigantic waves would cause heavy beach erosion at any time of year, but the fact that the storm struck in September heightened the erosion risk. It also arrived during hunting season, meaning that hundreds of people who might have been hunting in the remote Alaskan wilderness would be without access to updates about the storm and might be stuck off the grid. The Nome-Council Road, used by hunters and Alaskans to travel inland from the Bering Sea coast, has been partially washed away. Major flooding was also reported in the small coastal communities of Chevak, Kotlik, Newtok, Golovin and Shaktoolik, where multiple evacuations were necessary. The area is particularly vulnerable to erosion, with some sections of the coastline losing up to 100 feet of land to the sea each year, according to the Fourth National Climate Assessment, a comprehensive climate change report looking at impacts in the United States published in 2018. “Longer sea ice-free seasons, higher ground temperatures, and relative sea level rise are expected to worsen flooding and accelerate erosion in many regions, leading to the loss of terrestrial habitat and cultural resources, and requiring entire communities, such as Kivalina in northwestern Alaska, to relocate to safer terrain,” the report states. In Shaktoolik — home to more than 200 people — the berm made of gravel, sand and driftwood that shielded the settlement from the sea was destroyed, according to the Anchorage Daily News. Residents were forced to evacuate and shelter inside a school. Update: The storm has destroyed Shaktoolik’s berm, its main protection from the sea, says mayor Lars Sookiayak. “We’re pretty heartbroken,” he said. He’s worried about tonight, when seas are expected to pound the coastline again. Photo from Gloria Andrew.https://t.co/Zn4sph3NjO pic.twitter.com/H0J4fqHfxj — Alaska Public Media News (@AKpublicnews) September 18, 2022 “That was a pretty hard one to take,” Mayor Lars Sookiayak told the paper. “Pretty heartbreaking.”

Texas’ child welfare agency is once again blocked from investigating parents who provide gender-affirming care to their transgender children. The injunction applies to any family that belongs to PFLAG, an LGBTQ advocacy group with more than 600 members in Texas. The injunction also specifically protects a handful of families named in the suit, including the Briggles, outspoken advocates for transgender youth who were among the first to be investigated under this directive. This is the latest chapter in a monthslong legal battle over whether providing medically indicated gender-affirming health care, under the guidance of a doctor, could result in a finding of child abuse by the state. In February, following a nonbinding legal opinion from Attorney General Ken Paxton, Gov. Greg Abbott directed the Department of Family and Protective Services to investigate parents who provide gender-affirming care to their transgender children. The Texas Supreme Court has ruled that Abbott had no grounds to direct DFPS to investigate these families but overturned a statewide injunction on procedural grounds. The American Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal brought another lawsuit after that first injunction was overturned, seeking protections on behalf of all members of PFLAG. Travis County District Judge Amy Clark Meachum granted that injunction Friday, three months after hearing arguments. “The court has grasped the magnitude and breadth of the continued harm that Gov. Abbott’s directive and Attorney General Paxton’s opinion would have caused if DFPS was allowed to pursue its investigations,” said Nicholas “Guilly” Guillory, a lawyer with Lambda Legal. The lawsuit, filed in June, outlined examples of that harm, including the story of one 16-year-old transgender boy who attempted suicide the same day the governor issued his directive. “[He] said that the political environment, including Abbott’s Letter, and being misgendered at school, led him to take these actions,” the lawsuit said. The outpatient psychiatric facility where the young man sought care later reported his parents for providing him with gender-affirming care. Paxton’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The 10 Best Wild West Towns Across The U.S. — Best Life – Best Life https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-10-best-wild-west-towns-across-the-u-s-best-life-best-life/ From cowboys and rodeos to saloons and silver mines, the Wild West era defined parts of America in the late 19th century. Many people love revisiting this time through Western movies, but if you want to actually step back in time to the Wild West, there are plenty of places across the U.S. to do so. For example, did you know you can visit Buffalo Bill’s former lodge? Or step foot inside the O.K. Corral? If this type of living history is up your alley, read on to hear from travel experts about the 10 best small towns in the U.S. that feel like the Wild West. Cowboy boots and horses not required. READ THIS NEXT: The 10 Best U.S. Cities to Visit for History Buffs. Debraansky / iStock Picture the Wild West in your head, and you’ll likely conjure up an image pretty similar to the real-life town of Cody, Wyoming. It was established in 1896 and is named for famed buffalo hunter William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody, according to Tom Mesereau, founder of Mesereau Travel Public Relations. “Inspired by the undeveloped region’s combination of scenery, wildlife, and rich soil, as well as its location 52 miles from Yellowstone National Park, Buffalo Bill Cody decided to build a town,” he explains. In fact, it’s Buffalo Bill who coined the term “Wild West” when, in 1883, he began his traveling show Buffalo Bill’s Wild West. Today, the main attraction in Cody is the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. It’s comprised of five separate museums—the Buffalo Bill Museum, where you can see actual possessions of his and Annie Oakley’s, the Plains Indian Museum, the Cody Firearms Museum, the Draper Natural History Museum, and the Whitney Western Art Museum. Mesereau also recommends checking out the Irma Hotel, which was built by Buffalo Bill himself in 1902 and named after his youngest daughter; the Pahaska Tepee Resort, a rustic lodge where Buffalo Bill brought guests including Theodore Roosevelt and the Prince of Monaco; Old Trail Town, a collection of 19th-century frontier buildings including “one used by Butch Cassidy and his infamous Hole-in-the-Wall Gang”; and the Cody Nite Rodeo, “the longest-running summer-season nightly rodeo in the U.S.” RobertMayne / iStock Many old Western cities have been turned into tourist towns, but if you want to truly step back in time to the Wild West, head to this ghost town near the Nevada border. “Bodie, California used to be a thriving gold-rush town that had over 60 saloons at one point, producing over $35 million worth of gold and silver. It became a ghost town in 1915 when mining profits plummeted and many of the public facilities there closed down for good,” explains Bradley Williams, travel writer and co-founder of Dream Big, Travel Far. Today, the town is frozen in time and preserved as Bodie State Historic Park. “Only a small part of the town survives, preserved in a state of ‘arrested decay.’ Interiors remain as they were left and stocked with goods,” according to the California Department of Parks and Recreation. The nonprofit Bodie Foundation offers tours, ghost walks, and other special events. READ THIS NEXT: The 6 Best Off-The-Radar Destinations in the U.S. That Need to Be on Your Bucket List. Ovidiu Hrubaru / Shutterstock Sandwiched between the San Bernadino National Forest and Joshua Tree National Park sits Pioneertown. Though you wouldn’t tell by looking at it, this town is actually not from the Wild West days. “It was established in 1946 by a group of investors in the Hollywood business,” explains Kristin Lee, travel expert and author of the blog Global Travel Escapades. “They wanted to create a functional movie set that looked like the Wild West in the 1880s and would simultaneously allow for a few people to live out there.” This group of investors included Dick Curtis, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and Bud Abbott. According to Visit California, “more than 50 films and television shows were filmed here in the 1940s and ’50s.” “Today, a few hundred people live in Pioneertown, and it’s widely visited as a tourist attraction,” notes Lee. She says not to miss local bar Pappy and Harriet’s and Mane Street, where “you’ll find lots of wooden storefronts and tiny shops that are run by locals who are selling handcrafted goods.” For a place to stay, Visit California recommends the Pioneertown Motel, “a rustic, single-story 20-room inn [that] has been updated with fire pits, an outdoor bar, and hammocks.” M. Kaercher / iStock Of all the locations on this list, Tombstone, Arizona received the most love from travel experts. As Jenny Ly, travel blogger and entrepreneur at Go Wanderly, notes, “Tombstone was made immortal in under 30 seconds.” That’s how long the infamous gunfight at the O.K. Corral lasted in 1881 when the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday faced off against the Clanton-McLaury outlaw gang. “Today, you can see daily reenactments of the famed firefight at the precise location where it happened,” says Ly. You can also get the feel of the Old West by walking around the downtown area. “The wooden clapboard buildings are authentic as are the wooden boardwalks,” says Jocelyn Xamis Wolters, a preservationist and co-founder of the travel site Wolters World. While here, be sure to spot “the 140 bullet holes in the walls of the Bird Cage Theater, a famed 1880s nightclub, attesting to the town’s violent past,” says Ly. Other attractions include the Old Tombstone Western Theme Park, where you can see another gunfight show; the Boot Hill Graveyard, a National Register site that offers tours; the Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park, which was created following the events of 1881; and the Good Enough Silver Mine, an 1880s silver mine that now provides tours. Those who visit today can explore this mining history with a ride on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad, “the most famous American Short Line railroad,” according to Kyle Staten, a senior account executive at Fahlgren Mortine, which represents Travel Nevada. You’ll take a scenic trip to the neighboring city of Gold Hill, passing 17 historic mines on the way, several of which you can tour. Staten also recommends taking a walk down C Street, “the National Historic Landmark that stretches through the downtown of the city, where authentic 1870s western buildings, businesses, saloons, and more remain unchanged.” He says Gold Hill Hotel & Saloon is definitely worth a visit, as it’s the oldest hotel in the state and has one of the most authentic intact saloons. A representative for the city notes that “docents often walk the streets in Victorian garb telling visitors of the history of the town.” For more nostalgia, there are a slew of historic restaurants. Kenneth Sponsler / Shutterstock A small town just outside Black Hills National Forest in South Dakota, Deadwood was settled in 1876 as a gold mining village. “It became famous for its lawlessness in the late 1800s,” explains Trysta Barwig, travel expert and founder of This Travel Dream. “The murder of Wild Bill Hickok in 1876 only added to its reputation.” Today, the entire town of Deadwood is a National Historic Landmark. Walk down Main Street and find “saloons, casinos, breweries, and even a shootout [reenactment],” say Mark and Kristen Morgan, creators of the travel, hiking, and photography blog Where Are Those Morgans. “Be sure to look for plaques scattered throughout the streets featuring stories about legends such as Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, and Seth Bullock.” In addition, “the town is home to several museums, including the Adams Museum and the Days of ’76 Museum. You can also take a tour of the old mining town, or go horseback riding through the scenic hills,” says Matt James, founder of the travel blog Visitingly. While most of the towns on this list feature old-timey main streets with clapboard buildings and historic saloons, the rugged wilderness was another big part of the Wild West. Experience that side of things in all its glory in Medora, North Dakota. It’s located just outside Theodore Roosevelt National Park—so named because this is where President Theodore Roosevelt came to hunt bison. “It’s all about stepping back to the days when Theodore Roosevelt ranched here, when shootouts at the Little Missouri Saloon or the Roughrider were normal. Where the Little Missouri River cuts through the Badlands to give ranchers a route to reach civilization 60 miles away,” says Mike Kopp, creator of Beautiful Badlands. Some of the main attractions include the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame; the outdoor Medora Musical, a country-western variety show complete with live horses and “a dramatic reenactment of Theodore Roosevelt’s famous charge during the battle of San Juan Hill”; and horse trail rides through the Badlands. RaksyBH / Shutterstock Familiar with the saying “get outta Dodge?” This is where it came from. “Dodge City, Kansas is a famous Wild West town that was founded in 1872 … It attracted a high number of gunfighters and brothel-owners and gained a reputation for being the wickedest town in the Old West,” explains Larry Snider, VP of operations at Casago Vacation Rentals. In fact, Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday worked here as sheriffs. Be sure to see the remnants of the 1865 Fort Dodge, a stop on the Santa Fe National Historic Trail that once “provided supplies and a resting place for traders and buffalo hunters,” according to the National Park Service (NP...

Toward The Digitization Of The Health Systems In Indonesia – The Jakarta Post – The Jakarta Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/toward-the-digitization-of-the-health-systems-in-indonesia-the-jakarta-post-the-jakarta-post/ Pim Preesman Jakarta   ●   Mon, September 19, 2022 2022-09-19 02:35 0 acb46bb3015c754a01ddf4e65a0a5c1e 2 Academia healthcare,information-technology,health-ministry,investment,digitalization,communities,financing,disease,productivity,hospital Free The global pandemic has accelerated digital transformation in healthcare and spotlighted the urgent need for interoperability among information technology systems facing a deluge of patient data – often fragmented and siloed among various specialties, departments, and sites. Such inefficiencies have cost hospitals over US$300 billion in value every year, according to a McKinsey Global Report. This year, Philips’ 2022 Future Health Index polled 3,000 healthcare leaders across 15 countries, including Indonesia, and stated that the most pressing issue facing healthcare leaders is staff satisfaction and retention, which become a challenging task in a sector that is facing a widescale labor shortage. Another pressing priority for healthcare leaders is to continue to expand care delivery beyond hospital walls by investing in technologies such as digital health records, telehealth, and artificial intelligence tools that can enhance efficiency, improve care, and connect remote communities, which can be done by building on advances made during the pandemic. The report also said that in the next three years, Indonesian healthcare leaders say their top investment priorities will be in both AI (82 percent, up from 38 percent now) and telehealth (49 percent up from 37 percent today). Almost half (47 percent) of Indonesia’s healthcare leaders are investing in digital health records, with another 44 percent prioritizing clinical operations centers. Both figures are significantly greater than the global average of 39 percent and 22 percent, respectively. Digitalization is critical in driving the adoption of more sustainable healthcare models. A digital healthcare ecosystem will significantly expand access to care, especially for underserved communities in remote, hard-to-reach areas. Digital solutions are especially scalable, which supports the shift away from sick care to prevention and healthy living. Cost per treatment will also decrease, positively impacting the rising cost of healthcare that many countries around the world are grappling with. It is with these goals in mind that the government of Indonesia has embarked on a digital transformation of its healthcare system. It recently unveiled a comprehensive digital health blueprint that lays the groundwork for the country to leverage digital healthcare to provide universal, affordable, equitable quality care to all Indonesians. The growth of the digital health ecosystem is also expected to enhance Indonesia’s readiness in facing pandemic and epidemic situations in the future. Indonesia has 37 provinces from Sabang to Merauke where each province has its unique condition. So, to provide equal access of digital transformation to healthcare professionals and patients across different geographies, the government will have to prioritize development of standardized infrastructures and resources for all of Indonesia. Additionally, the other main challenge is in the management of national health data. Currently, fragmented data which are spread across varying health sector applications, and standardization and data exchange regulations are the need of the hour. PeduliLindungi app for example currently has more than 95 million users and has the potential to be transformed into a holistic citizen health app.  Currently, the Indonesian government has six pillars of the Indonesian Health system that want to be transformed digitally, which are primary care, secondary care, health system resilience, health financing, health talent and culture, and health digital and technology. To achieve the vision for a Healthy Indonesia, players across the healthcare ecosystem will need to support and partner with the Health Ministry. The ministry in its digital transformation blueprint has mentioned some of the anticipated challenges in this transformation journey – such as primary care capacity and capability, improving health security and financing system, improving referral care access and quality, enabling development or utilization of tech and human resources. Private sectors in the health technology industry that have experience in collaborating with and implementing digital transformation journeys for public players across the world, can support the governments by providing their expertise to improve access to care outside Java, improve access to comprehensive care across Indonesia, and a continuum of care for key disease areas, such as cardiology, neurology, and oncology.   For instance, based on previous similar instances across the world at our company, we envision setting up command centers such that four command centers across Indonesia can enable care continuum in cardiology, radiology, digital pathology, and intensive care and address the issue of access and interoperability. Such command centers can enable seamless access to data and efficient clinical workflows to facilitate collaboration across the cardiovascular teams, between 1 cardiac-focused main hospital and selected middle hospitals. Strategically located command centers can remotely support workflows for oncology, neurology, and others, provide advanced visualization (AV) capabilities and digital computational pathology (DCP) and provide virtual care center. To support the government in enabling health data interoperability, the health technology companies can help by implementing standardized solutions that would enable healthcare providers to access patient data generated from multi-modality, multi-vendor, multi-hospital, and multi-location visits across any patient’s disease journey. Going forward, we believe the digital transformation of healthcare and the increasing adoption of virtual care or “telehealth” will play a major role in helping people to live healthily and cope with the disease, and in enabling care providers to meet people’s health needs, deliver better outcomes and improve productivity. Using the command center hub and spoke model can also help to facilitate remote specialized consultation where one specialist can monitor up to 150 to 200 high acuity patients, while supported by three nurses. Centralized training for healthcare professionals across Indonesia through these hubs can ensure equitable standard of care for all patients. I can say that our long-term vision is to enable transformations that can extend care beyond the hospital walls. We fully understand the need of integrated informatics solutions that are capable of seamlessly connecting patients and caregivers in real-time, from the hospital to wherever they may be. Together with the healthcare leaders in Indonesia, we must hand in hand “driving better patient outcomes” to meet people’s health needs, deliver better outcomes and improve productivity.  *** The writer is president director of PT Philips Indonesia Commercial.

Patrol officers on foot in the downtown area heard the 1:39 a.m. gunfire and ran toward it, observing a large crowd of people fleeing the area and then saw the victim on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds, according to a police department press release. The man was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Youngstown police detectives and crime scene investigators began processing the scene, collecting evidence and beginning their investigation. No arrests have been made, and the identity of the shooting is unknown, police said. West Federal Street at Hazel is close to several notable downtown buildings, including the Seventh District Court of Appeals building and Mahoning County Children Services, both on West Federal. There are several bars near the West Federal-Hazel intersection, and the intersection is one block west of revitalized Phelps Street Gateway and pedestrian walkways. Youngstown’s last homicide was the Aug. 30 shooting death of Cameron Dyer, 36, who was shot at the Logan Avenue Gas Mart, 1704 Logan Ave., and then driven to the Youngstown Police Department, 16 W Boardman St., by Jacques K. Peterman-Oliver, 45, of Brookline Avenue, who was later charged with murder in Dyer’s death.
