Have We Become More Selfish In A Post-Covid World? – The Independent https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/have-we-become-more-selfish-in-a-post-covid-world-the-independent/ While the pandemic and lockdowns were wholeheartedly hated by the vast majority, I would be the first to admit that there were also some positive moments that came out of our enforced confinement of 2020 and 2021. As a self-employed mother with two small children, I felt included in a way that I hadn’t in a long time. There were Zoom pub quizzes, online panel discussions, and a whole heap of new WhatsApp group chats that allowed me to get my social fix in those dark days. I felt part of society for the first time in many years. We all agreed that public sector workers and shop staff had a rough deal; we compared sourdough starters, clapped on our doorsteps every Thursday, and started to appreciate the simple pleasures of being healthy, together, and having a new horde of Monstera plants to tend to. No sooner, it seemed, had Covid-19 become less of a “thing”, the war in Ukraine broke out. Again, we clubbed together to do our bit. We raided our wardrobes for warm clothes, people travelled to the borders to take what supplies they could, and a great many opened their homes, inviting in refugees in their time of need. Many of us are still clinging to the last vestiges of those silver linings, but I feel like that camaraderie, that unity, that “in this together” spirit has now faded into a distant memory. Even the sense of “togetherness” seen in the queue to walk past the Queen’s coffin as she lies in state, with stories of sandwich-sharing and budding romances, is bittersweet, coloured by a wider sense that dissenting voices are unwelcome. Think of the increase in racist abuse of Black and Asian people on social media, and the heavy-handed policing of protesters who criticise the monarchy. I really believed that Covid was a turning point. That we would start to care more about each other, take care of our planet, and support each other’s mental health and boundaries. But I’ve noticed that, as we’ve moved forward, this has started to be replaced with a new sense of selfishness. At first, I thought it was just not being exposed to people for a long time. That people had always been like that, and I’d just forgotten. But as time has worn on, as strangers have cut me up at junctions and the infighting among once-close groups of friends has escalated, I’ve realised that we are now in a state of collective social burnout. As society reopened, we saw stories about what others had been up to while the rest of us were determinedly doing the “right thing”. Partygate, dodgy deals, the admitted sexism of the government’s SEISS scheme, and, as ever, the small proportion of people profiteering from a crisis. And now the rot has really set in, and we are still frightened – locked in a third year of fight or flight mode. We have replaced one life-threatening event, the pandemic, with another – the terrifying reality of a cost of living crisis. A crisis in which, although we live in one of the richest countries in the world, many of us are now in a position where we don’t know how we’re going to manage. Will we be able to feed our children? Heat our homes? Can we just scrape by? Even with the new prime minister Liz Truss’s plan to cap household energy bills at £2,500, it’s still unclear how the average family – or those who are more vulnerable – will cope. People are going on strike to argue for a pay increase so that they can just about afford to keep the lights on. People are being forced into debt, are worried about losing their jobs, and are having to take drastic action to try to survive. We’re all tired, and we just want to go back to how things were. We expected Covid to end, and that we – as a society – would continue on our merry way. But there’s no going back. To keep up to speed with all the latest opinions and comment, sign up to our free weekly Voices Dispatches newsletter by clicking here Like other key events in recent history, including 9/11 and the financial crash of 2008, Covid has left us with a different world. We have to work out if we want to continue to be selfless, to think of others – or join the mob mentality and just look after our own. While many would automatically say the former, hardship and fear may influence us to take a more self-serving route. It’s coded into our primal brains to survive, and when it comes to the crunch, the vast majority will save themselves. Even the Don’t Pay movement that is encouraging people to refuse to pay their energy bills has divided us. There are the people who are doing it on principle, the people who are considering it as their only option, and those who are ignoring it because they don’t want to damage their credit, as who knows what tomorrow holds. I remember thinking about how terrifying a global pandemic was in March 2020. This unknown, unseen virus threatened to destroy everything that we held dear. But that faceless virus, in hindsight, was a more palatable threat. The selfishness of people across the spectrum of class, wealth and social status now feels starker and more visible than ever. As a society, we have become more selfish in a post-Covid world, but really, looking at the state of things, who could blame us?

Super Gremlin Announces Metaverse Expansion By Acquiring A Prime Location In Decentraland – BeInCrypto https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/super-gremlin-announces-metaverse-expansion-by-acquiring-a-prime-location-in-decentraland-beincrypto/ After the massive success of its past collections with prominent holders such as Eminem on BSC, NFT Demon now expands to the metaverse with his new NFT Collection, Super Gremlin. As of September 2022, The project has acquired a prime spot of land in Decentraland, creating a hub for their NFT Holders to share and create unique experiences.  To grasp the significance of this, it helps to understand what Decentraland is and why it is so important. Decentraland is a user-oriented virtual metaverse where people around the world can congregate and share ideas and resources. It is a digital space with its ecosystem, culture, economic opportunities, and even real estate.  With this in mind, real estate in Decentraland is highly important, as attaining a high-quality spot not only shows your dedication to the metaverse but also places your project in a prominent location for Decentraland’s community to all see. By acquiring such a place, NFT Demon shows the virtual world that their Super Gremlin NFT collection is a serious project. It additionally means that members of Decentraland can easily locate Super Gremlin’s space and utilize it as the perfect area to share unique and immersive experiences. In other words, it gives the fanbase a location where they can feel at home and connect with like-minded individuals.  The prime location also helps with one of NFT Demon’s most altruistic goals, which is to raise awareness of cancer. Jeremy Ryan, AKA NFT Demon, is a cancer survivor. The artist and entrepreneur had a four-year battle with a brain tumor, along with other forms of cancer, throughout his body. Despite medical practitioners informing him that his chances of survival were near-impossible, Ryan recovered – nothing short of a medical miracle. As a means of honoring his own experience and helping others in the world, he wants his art to spread awareness of cancer to aid those who are suffering themselves.  About Super Gremlin Super Gremlin is an NFT Collection aimed to be different from every other project in the NFT space. While other projects focus on profits, the Super Gremlin community helps fund NGOs that fight against cancer every day. Inspired by the story of its founder Jeremy Ryan, a brain cancer survivor, we aim to raise awareness & help various organizations through charitable contributions. The Super Gremlin community will also get to learn about NFT Art through various interactions with its founder, aka NFT DEMON. UK Regulator Warns Crypto Exchange FTX Is Providing Services Without Authorization – Regulation Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/uk-regulator-warns-crypto-exchange-ftx-is-providing-services-without-authorization-regulation-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ Britain’s top financial regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), has issued a warning about cryptocurrency exchange FTX operating in the U.K. without authorization. “Almost all firms and individuals offering, promoting or selling financial services or products in the U.K. have to be authorized or registered by us,” said the regulator. FCA Warns About FTX Operating Without Authorization The U.K. Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) published a warning on its website Friday regarding crypto exchange FTX. The regulator detailed: We believe this firm may be providing financial services or products in the U.K. without our authorization. The FCA explained that FTX is not authorized but is targeting investors in the U.K. Firms carrying out specific crypto asset activities in the U.K. must comply with the amended “Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing and Transfer of Funds (Information on the Payer) Regulations,” and register with the FCA. “You will not have access to the Financial Ombudsman Service or be protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), so you are unlikely to get your money back if things go wrong,” the financial regulator warned, elaborating: Almost all firms and individuals offering, promoting or selling financial services or products in the U.K. have to be authorized or registered by us. FTX has been trying to expand its operations in Europe. The company established FTX Europe in March and said it had secured approval from the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC). In May, the U.K. government outlined its plans to support crypto adoption and affirmed its commitment to regulate stablecoins. Former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak said in April: “It’s my ambition to make the U.K. a global hub for crypto asset technology, and the measures we’ve outlined today will help to ensure firms can invest, innovate, and scale up in this country.” His former colleague, Glen, similarly said: “We want this country to be a global hub — the very best place in the world to start and scale crypto-companies.” However, the government’s crypto plans may change under the new prime minister, Liz Truss. Big Fashions Sustainability Push Has A Huge Hole Deccan Herald
Big Fashions Sustainability Push Has A Huge Hole Deccan Herald
Big Fashion’s Sustainability Push Has A Huge Hole – Deccan Herald https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/big-fashions-sustainability-push-has-a-huge-hole-deccan-herald/ By Zahra Hirji Last week was Fashion Week in New York City, and on Monday Climate Week will come to the Big Apple. At the intersection of these annual showcases lies an uncomfortable truth: No one has figured out how to credibly align climate goals with fashion’s current business model.  Retailers have in the past few years announced a slew of sustainability measures — practically every company in the industry has a plan, or a plan to make a plan, for changing how they manufacture products to be greener, and extending those products’ lifespan. These initiatives have given rise to the buzzword of “circularity,” and are geared at reckoning with fashion’s enormous climate footprint. According to the United Nations, the industry contributes between 2% and 8% of global carbon emissions. But that’s where things get awkward. As of now, there’s little discussion about just how many goods a company should be producing to hit its environmental targets. Instead, bold strategies abound to keep businesses in expansion mode.  “Many, many companies are starting to realize they have a situation that appears irreconcilable,” said Elisa Niemtzow, vice president of consumer sectors and global membership at the sustainability consulting company BSR. “The concept of degrowth and alternative business models, or alternative models to growth, can be words that make people uncomfortable.”  Take H&M. The Swedish retailer has pledged to cut its emissions 56% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels, earning a “B” for its 2021 climate disclosures from the third-party nonprofit CDP. That’s on top of H&M moving to reduce its water and plastic use and rely on more recycled materials. But even the best materials can’t counteract a production volume of 3 billion garments per year, or investor expectations of beating out fast-fashion competitors. Is it even possible to decouple climate goals from that kind of strategy? Many scientists engaging with BSR don’t seem to think so. “Scientists generally would say that decoupling is actually not possible, or it could be possible for emissions but not for resource use,” Niemtzow said. “And even if it could be in theory possible, it’s extremely unlikely to ever happen.” Some companies are trying. In the luxury space, Gucci managed to cut its emissions 15% compared to 2019 levels while still boosting sales, Business of Fashion reported. Alternative models on offer include capping growth, focusing on fewer, higher-quality items, and narrowing inventory to climate-friendly options — though it’s unclear how these approaches scale over time. There are also entire businesses springing up around reselling everything from apparel to furniture, or renting goods to avoid new production entirely. The rise in resale, rental, repair and remaking businesses, aka more circular ones, could potentially cut fashion’s climate footprint by about a third of what’s needed to keep the 1.5° Celsius goal alive, according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. “I think the sustainability people in the fashion space have been talking about the elephants in the room of overproduction and overconsumption for several years now,” Niemtzow said, adding that companies are at least starting to be pulled into the conversation. “We’re still all searching for the right models to guide us.”

Can A Door-Step Health Approach Be Key To Tackle NCD Burden? – Times Of India https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/can-a-door-step-health-approach-be-key-to-tackle-ncd-burden-times-of-india/ Health is overmedicalized said someone on a panel I was recently on, and I agree. It is. We expect the doctor to help the patient who needs urgent medical care and take care of people with chronic diseases such as diabetes, monitor blood sugars every quarter and adjust the medicines they may be on. But isn’t it true that a lot of what keeps our bodies physically healthy and our minds at ease, can easily be delivered to us outside the health system, right in our homes or on our phones? We know from the WHO that noncommunicable diseases are largely preventable, that 80% of heart disease and type 2 diabetes and 40% of cancers can be prevented with 3 lifestyle changes – one must eat right, increase physical activity and avoid tobacco. NCDs are not inevitable – they are preventable. But the big task at hand is to make prevention accessible. Community-based approaches make sense We believe NCD prevention can be taken to people right to their doorstep, where they live, learn and work, to adolescents, men, and women, in schools and workplaces, on mobile phones and on social media, in urban and rural India. We call this approach the Doorstep Health model. Doctors and nurses are overworked and don’t have time to give lifestyle advice. But healthy living is very important and can help us prevent NCDs and also improve our mental health. This community-based approach makes prevention accessible while allowing the country’s limited and precious healthcare capacity to focus on taking care of those who need urgent medical attention. Doorstep Health is an idea whose time has come. In recent times we have learned of the bizarre links between diabetes, a noncommunicable disease and COVID, a highly infectious one. We have learned, often noting this within our own close family and circle of friends, that people with underlying diabetes and hypertension are the ones most likely to get severe COVID disease, the ones to need hospitalization, and ICU care and unfortunately the ones least likely to survive. So prevention of NCDs through healthy living has become more urgent and important now than ever before. We need to all lead healthy lives, eat simple home cooked balanced meals, and eat more fruits and vegetables, less fried food. This can also help us boost immunity, become more resilient and be better prepared to withstand the next pandemic. We must all become physically active – and that is a habit that starts young. We must start young We know for example that 3 out of 4 teens in India don’t move enough (WHO study) and 10% of our children are pre-diabetic. That is indeed alarming. Surely something can be done. We must get children to go out and play, do chores at home and use their pester power to get their families to buy less junk food each week. Let us get our children educated and empowered so they grow up to be healthy, productive, grounded, global citizens. And educate adults Consumers are confused about what to eat shuttling between low carb and low fat and high protein diets, not sure if they should experiment with intermittent fasting. It’s time to educate and empower young Indians about what to eat and in what quantities, and get them engaged in regular physical activity. We must commend the efforts of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India for their Eat Right campaign and the Aaj se Thoda Kam ads that goad us to eat just a little less sugar and salt every day. Powerful. Social media and mobile phones are wonderful ways to reach young Indians about prevention, at the population level. Not only will this help individuals prevent NCDs, boost immunity and better withstand the consequences of COVID, it will also help us be grounded and improve our mental health and well-being. In fact, mental illness is one of the biggest long-term fallouts from COVID – there is more overt anxiety now and greater demand for therapy and prescriptions due to greater isolation, uncertainty about futures and jobs, anguish from watching loved ones suffer and die from COVID. Workplaces are increasingly recognized as ideal platforms for promoting health in the real world, for taking care of both the physical and mental health of employees. In COVID times, health has become a key pillar of workplace strategy and is discussed everywhere, from the boardroom to the factory floor. India is hard-hit by NCDs. More than 2/3 deaths in India are due to NCDs, and India is a diabetes capital. 77 million live with diabetes and an equal number are undiagnosed and perhaps a larger number pre-diabetic. Also in metros, up to 3 out of 4 adults are either diabetic or pre-diabetic. Moreover, Indians get the disease very early, often by age 30, some 10-20 years before people in the West. And the country is young – the median age is 27 years. So over the next few years, very large numbers of young people will get to age 30 and have a higher risk for developing diabetes. The demographic dividend may very well become the demographic disaster unless we act now. Prevention is Smart How can we treat our way out of this seemingly intractable crisis? Prevention at the population level, that does not demand healthcare resources, is the smart solution. The community-based Doorstep Health approach is therefore very exciting, and is being used by Arogya World, (www.arogyaworld.org) the NGO I founded more than 10 years ago. Key elements include – Reach adolescents in the school setting (the Healthy Schools program has shown 15% impact being validated with Stanford CARE), Young adults in the workplace (evidence from our Healthy Workplace program includes increased gym use, improved biometric data etc), Reach people on their mobile phones with text messages and voice calls (Arogya World’s mDiabetes program has shown 20% improvement in multiple health behaviors known to prevent diabetes), Leverage social media to educate people on healthy eating (reach for our MyThali program is in millions and is being confirmed with NielsenIQ). This surround sound, multi-pronged community-based approach is showing traction and fills me with hope. Do follow us to keep track of our progress. Tackling NCDs is a must for our country to become a stronger nation, to have a healthy productive workforce, maintain our role as an economic powerhouse on the global stage and meet our SDG commitments especially SDG#3 – health and well-being for all. The Doorstep Health approach looks promising and can help India truly build back better after COVID. Disclaimer Views expressed above are the author’s own. END OF ARTICLE

Men’s Basketball The dedicated FSU IS A BASKETBALL SCHOOL – Thread #10 Recruiting, Roster, Schedule, NBA Noles, Draft, All BBall Stuff is there for you to check out or share any latest news about the FSU Mens’ Basketball team you hear…{continued *FOR FREE} — Hamilton Presented With Joe Lapchick Award Florida State men’s basketball coach Leonard Hamilton received the Joe Lapchick Character Award presented by the Joe Lapchick Foundation during a ceremony at the New York Athletic Club. Hamilton was honored with the award which celebrates the life and career of Joe Lapchick, a Hall of Fame coach at St. John’s University (1936-47) and the New York Knicks (1947-56), who was well known for his compassion and integrity off the court. The award is given to coaches who exhibit honorable character and who have impacted the game of basketball as did Lapchick. “When I got the call, associating me with the Joe Lapchick Award, I was honored to be mentioned in the same sentence,” said Hamilton. “If we know anything about his career, he always fought for what he thought was right, representing the sometimes underserved and disadvantaged, for women’s rights and the inclusion of all people in different areas. “It’s an honor, a privilege, and I’m overwhelmed. I think about all the coaches and players that I’ve worked with who have created this culture that allowed us to be at this point.” Hamilton is just the fifth head coach from the ACC to earn the award. He joins Georgia Tech’s Bobby Cremins, Virginia’s Pete Gillen, Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, and North Carolina’s Dean Smith as Lapchick Award winners from the nation’s top college basketball conference. Entering his 21st season at Florida State, Hamilton is the winningest coach in Florida State history (395 wins) and the fifth winningest coach in ACC history (395 wins). He has been named the National Coach of the Year five times, including most recently in 2021 when he received the Ben Jobe Award as the National Minority Coach of the Year. Hamilton is a three-time ACC Coach of the Year (2009, 2012 and 2020) and a two-time Big East Coach of the Year (1995 and 199) and is the only coach to be named Coach of the Year in the ACC and the Big East multiple times. Throughout Hamilton’s Hall of Fame career he is most proud of the graduation rate of his players which exceeds 97 percent at Florida State (73 of 75 seniors), 90 percent at the University of Miami (28 of 31 seniors) and 95 percent for his career (101 of 106 seniors). “My father went to the ninth grade. My father was extremely tough. My mother was very bright. I had three brothers and a sister. And I knew the only way I was going to improve my circumstances was I had to get my education. My father would say I would have absolutely no money for you to go to college. But you need to go and get your degree.” Motivated by mentoring his players to become good people, good husbands, good fathers, and good neighbors, Hamilton continuously reflects on hearing from his players on holidays, following the births of their children, and other big milestones of their lives. “If all I have are Coach of the Year awards and conference championship trophies, what do I really have?” said Hamilton on the eve of the Lapchick Award ceremony. “I am motivated by the successes of our former players, and how they represent themselves and their families in the community. “I hope that when I hang my whistle up, I’ll be able to look back at my career and be proud. I’ll be proud of the young men and what are doing with their lives, with their families and how successful they’re doing in the social aspect of their lives. That’s much more important than the awards I have won. So for me personally, I’ve never lost sight of the fact that you take in youngsters, and hopefully while they’re with you, they’re growing to go into the type of young men that we all can be proud of.” Hamilton, who was a finalist for the John R Wooden “Keys to Life” Award in 2000, has been inducted into five different Halls of Fame: UT Martin, 1983; Austin Peay State University, 2000; University of Miami, 2006; Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, 2013; Florida State Athletics, 2021) and was named as an Alumnus of Distinction by Gaston College (N.C.) in 2015. Hamilton helped lead Kentucky to the National Championship in 1978 as the first associate head coach in program history. The award was established in 2008 and has been presented to many of the prominent people in college basketball, including Duke’s Krzyzewski, St. John’s Lou Carnesecca, Tennessee’s Pat Summitt, Georgetown’s John Thompson and NC State’s Kay Yow. Broadcasters Dick Vitale and Verne Lundquist, along with writer Jim O’Connell are also Lapchick Award honorees. Lapchick was the premier center of his time in the 1920s and 30s, playing for the Original Celtics in New York City. Following his playing career, he coached St. John’s from 1936-47 and 1956-65, winning Coach of the Year twice and the NIT four times. At the time, the NIT was considered to be the collegiate national championship. Between his two stints at St. John’s came his eight consecutive winning seasons with the New York Knicks where he took them to the NBA Finals three straight years finished and with a 326-247 record. Also presented with the Lapchick Character Award at Friday’s ceremony were Val Ackerman (Commissioner of the Big East, first President of the WNBA), Rick Byrd (former Head Coach, Belmont University), and Speedy Morris (former Head Coach at La Salle University). — FSU basketball releases finalized 2022-23 schedule: Florida State Seminoles basketball has finalized its 2022-2023 schedule Florida State Seminoles basketball has finalized its 2022-2023 schedule, announcing the solidified slate on Tuesday. “Our ACC schedule is very challenging, as it is every year,” said Head Coach Leonard Hamilton. “Our conference schedule, coupled with our non-conference schedule will be one of the toughest schedules in the country, and one of the most difficult we have ever played. Our stretch of games in November and December is going to be just as tough as our schedule in January and February. Our players have to grow up in a hurry…{continued *FOR FREE} 2022-23 PDF SCHEDULE — Hamilton Named Nation’s No. 3 Recruiter Leonard Hamilton, who begins his 21st season as Florida State’s Head Basketball Coach when the Seminoles play host to Stetson on November 7, has been named as the nation’s No. 3 recruiter by Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster who extensively cover all things college basketball for the Field of 68. “Leonard Hamilton has flown under the radar in the ACC due to Roy Williams and Coach K, but now, Hamilton has the best résumé in the league,” said Goodman and Dauster. “He has over a dozen 5-star commits in the past, including Scottie Barnes, Dwayne Bacon and rising sophomore wing Matthew Cleveland. Coach Hamilton is known for building depth but quietly handles his own on the trail” Hamilton and his staff of incredible assistant coaches have built one of the top programs in the nation through recruiting and by coaching the nation’s top talent. The five-time National Coach of the Year is the winningest coach in Florida State history and the fifth winningest coach in the illustrious history of the Atlantic Coast Conference – which has been the best college basketball conference in the nation for nearly 70 years. Florida State has had at least one player selected in the NBA Draft in 13 of 20 seasons under Hamilton. Hamilton has continued to stock the Seminoles’ program with the nation’s top talent, as the Seminoles’ recruiting class ranked No. 2 in 2021, No. 3 in 2015 and No. 8 in 2016. Florida State’s 2015 recruiting class included 2016 NBA First-Round selection Malik Beasley, 2017 NBA Second-Round selection Dwayne Bacon, and 2019 NBA Second-Round selection Terance Mann and center Christ Koumadje. The Seminoles’ 2016 class was just as loaded with NBA Draft Lottery pick Jonathan Isaac, First Round pick Mfiondu Kabengele, and Trent Forrest who played in the 2022 NBA Playoffs with the Utah Jazz. Hamilton’s recruiting prowess has been legendary, and began as he attracted two future NBA Draft Picks (Von Wafer and Alexander Johnson) in his first recruiting class after being hired as the seventh, and now longest, tenured coach in school history. South Korea Is Set To Focus On Metaverse With New Laws 1 – Cryptopolitan https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/south-korea-is-set-to-focus-on-metaverse-with-new-laws-1-cryptopolitan/ TL;DR Breakdown South Korea is set to focus on metaverse with new laws The country wants to provide support to new technologies South Korea is still prosecuting Terraform Labs South Korea has announced that it will no longer impose laws that will stifle the gaming activities of the metaverse in the country. The country has been mulling the imposition of laws that covers traditional gaming in the sector over the last few years. As per the new update, the country has announced that it will drum up a new legal framework that will guide the activities in the sector alone. The country wants to support new technologies South Korea has been pooling efforts to make its metaverse ecosystem one of the best over the last few years. One such move is the recent $200 million raised to create a metaverse owned by the country. This investment shows the country’s seriousness in pushing for more adoption of a metaverse. After the investment, the ministry of science in the country noted that using regulations as old as time on a new ecosystem will seek to drag it back. During a meeting, the body in charge of the regulation cautioned those at the top of the country about imposing old laws on new services. Most of them argued that it could spell doom for the service as most participants would not be motivated to join. South Korea is still on Terraforms heels Although the new update means a new law will be created for the metaverse, some faction still thinks it should be regulated as a video game. However, other arguments have claimed that new services, including the Metaverse and OTT streaming websites, must be guarded by new regulations. Concerning the regulation in the metaverse, the agency talked about the block it could pose to the industry’s growth on a legal and institutional basis. At the beginning of this month, there was a consensus that there would be a new law based solely on metaverse, which will also govern the Web3 ecosystem. Although South Korea has been actively supporting new technologies, it has also continued to crack down on the top executives at Terra. The government claimed that the company executives were aware of a possible loss of funds and refused to explain a detailed explanation to investors. With this, the passports of the founder, alongside some of the top executives, have been confiscated. Owotunse Adebayo Adebayo loves to keep tab of exciting projects in the blockchain space. Space News Weekly Recap: Blue Origin Rocket Crash Diamonds In A Meteorite And More The Indian Express
Space News Weekly Recap: Blue Origin Rocket Crash, Diamonds In A Meteorite, And More – The Indian Express https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/space-news-weekly-recap-blue-origin-rocket-crash-diamonds-in-a-meteorite-and-more-the-indian-express/ Last week, we were reminded that spaceflight is still hard when Jeff Bezos-owned Blue Origin’s rocket crashed back to Earth shortly after launch. Fortunately, no one was aboard the spacecraft and nobody was injured during the mishap. Read more about the crash and other interesting news on our weekly space news recap. Blue Origin rocket crash Bright yellow flames shot off the New Shepard rocket’s bottom shortly after launch. At that point, the capsule’s emergency launch abort system kicked in and lifted the craft off the top, after which it parachuted down onto the ground. At the time of the accident, the rocket was travelling at approximately 1,126 kilometres per hour and was at an altitude of 8,500 metres. Since it was an uncrewed mission, no one was on board the spacecraft but it used the same kind of rocket that sends paying customers to space. According to AP, the rockets are grounded until an investigation reveals what happened. NASA’s second attempt to launch the Artemis 1 mission was aborted due to a hydrogen leak. (Image credit: NASA / Twitter) NASA sets new Artemis I launch date After two failed attempts, NASA announced that it is targeting a September 27 launch date for the uncrewed Artemis I mission to the moon. The launch window opens at 11.37 AM EDT (9.07 PM IST) on that day. The space agency said that it is also reviewing a potential backup launch window option for October 2. This backup launch date is under review because SpaceX’s Crew-5 to the International Space Station is scheduled to launch on October 3. The Elon Musk-owned private space company and NASA are reviewing pre-launch milestones to ensure that there are no clashes. The backup launch date is important because the space agency’s Range Flight Safety Program is still processing the request that the current testing requirement for the flight termination system (FTS) be extended. If the request is not accepted, it is possible that the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft will be rolled back into the Vehicle Assembly Building. The lonsdaleite within the meteorite. (Image credit: PNAS) ‘Strange’ diamonds in a meteorite Scientists confirmed the existence of lonsdaleite in ureilite meteorites that came from a distant dwarf planet. Lonsaleite is a rare hexagonal form of diamond that could potentially be stronger than conventional diamonds. Interestingly, the research produced evidence that the lonsdaleite was formed by a supercritical chemical vapour deposition process that is similar to how “lab-grown” diamonds are manufactured. Scientists propose that this process happened on the dwarf planet after a “catastrophic collision.” This image of the Lobster Nebula was captured by NOIRLab’s Dark Energy Camera. (Image credit: CTIO/NOIRLab/DOE/NSF/AURA) The ‘Lobster Nebula’ in dazzling red NOIRLab released this image of the nebula NGC 6357 captured by the Dark Energy Camera. The star-forming nebula is also known as the “Lobster Nebula.” The Dark Energy Camera’s original purpose is to help the Fark Energy Survey discover and understand dark energy but it also occasionally captures stunning images of distant cosmic objects. The Lobster Nebula is about 8,000 light-years away from the Earth and has the open star cluster Pismois 24 near its centre. This cluster is home to some unusually massive and bright stars, which can be seen in the image. While most of the nebula is overwhelmingly red-coloured, the areas surrounding the young stars have a bluish glow caused by the emission of ionised hydrogen gas from the star-forming regions. This JWST image is actually a composite of several filters which represent emissions from ionised gas, hydrocarbons, molecular gas, dust and scattered starlight. This image is actually a composite of several filters which represent emissions from ionised gas, hydrocarbons, molecular gas, dust and scattered starlight. At the top right of the image, the Trapezium Cluster is visible, It is a group of young stars that are very hot and massive. This cluster emits ultraviolet radiation that is slowly eroding away the most prominent feature in the image—the Orion Bar that stretches from the top left of the image to the bottom right. Astronomers studying SNR 0519 have discovered clues that can help determine the timeline of the star’s explosion. SNR 0519 is the result of a supernova that is classified as Type Ia. Scientists use Type Ia supernovae for a wide range of scientific studies, from studying thermonuclear explosions to measuring the distance to galaxies that are billions of light-years away. (Image credit: Centre for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian) ‘Baby planet’ in the making Planets are formed from protoplanetary disks, which are rings of dust and gas that surround young newly-born stars. Hundreds of such disks have been spotted throughout the universe but astronomers have rarely actually observed actual planetary birth and formation. Scientists at the Harvard & Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics stumbled upon some observations that could help detect “newborn planets” in the future. While examining ALMA data of a protoplanetary disk, researchers observed two separate and bright bunches of materials orbiting within the disk. According to the researchers, these clumps serve as evidence of a planet forming in the disk.

Winners And Losers: Deathloop Heads To Game Pass As Alexa Tries To Sell You More Stuff TrustedReviews
Winners And Losers: Deathloop Heads To Game Pass As Alexa Tries To Sell You More Stuff – TrustedReviews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/winners-and-losers-deathloop-heads-to-game-pass-as-alexa-tries-to-sell-you-more-stuff-trustedreviews/ OPINION: It’s Sunday, which means it’s time for another edition of Winners and Losers.  This week, GoPro unveiled its Hero 11 Black action camera, Amazon showed off its smallest and lightest e-reader yet and Sonos announced its own tiny addition as the Sub Mini was finally made official.  It was also a big week in gaming, with Nintendo previewing games like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom at its September Direct event and Sony announcing a gaming-focused Xperia accessory during its own Born To Game stream.  However, it was Microsoft who caught our attention with news of a specific game coming to Xbox Game Pass in the near future. Amazon, meanwhile, took the title of Loser for an intrusive new feature coming to Alexa.  Winner: Microsoft  Our winner this week is Microsoft after the company revealed that Deathloop is coming to Xbox during its 2022 Tokyo Game Show stream.  The game will be available as a standalone purchase for the Xbox Series X/S and to Game Pass, Game Pass PC and Xbox Cloud gaming users across the world from September 20, which means you won’t have to wait long at all to get your hands on it.  The game will include all the updates released since Deathloop’s PlayStation launch, including photomode, accessibility options that weren’t available at launch, cross-play matchmaking and plenty of quality-of-life fixes.  The game will also come with a new Goldenloop update, which brings with it a new weapon, a new ability, new enemy types, an extended ending and more.  We ranked Deathloop as one of the best PS5 games available right now, taking the spot of Best Thriller, more specifically.  Computing and Gaming Editor Ryan Jones gave the game 4.5/5 stars, describing it as “one of the most innovative games from a major publisher that I’ve ever played”, thanks to its time loop mechanic, clever puzzles and engaging combat.  It’s exciting to see the game come to Xbox after receiving such high praise on the PS5, and the fact it’s coming to Game Pass means you might not even need to pay extra to find out what the hype is about.  Loser: Amazon  This week’s loser is Amazon – or, rather, Amazon Echo users – after the company previewed a new ‘Customers ask Alexa’ feature at its Amazon Accelerate conference.  While the feature might sound innocuous enough at first glance, it’s basically Amazon’s way of sneaking ads into your everyday interactions with through its Alexa voice assistant.  Customers Ask Alexa works by listening out for queries that relate to the features of a specific product and responding with answers provided directly by that product’s brand. Of course, the feature wouldn’t be complete without a link to the brand’s Amazon storefront.  The example Amazon gives is “How can I remove pet hair from my carpet?”. Instead of responding with information gathered from the web, Alexa will now be able to regurgitate a brand’s words and redirect you to their product on Amazon.  While Amazon has reassured users that these brand-provided answers will go through Alexa’s content moderation and quality checks, it’s nevertheless disappointing to hear that the company has found another way to infiltrate our homes with ads.  Not only do these ads have the potential to be incredibly invasive, but they’re also likely to be really annoying – especially for users looking for useful or time-sensitive advice from their smart speaker.  Customers Ask Alexa will only be available to select group of brands in 2022, which raises questions of which products you can expect Alexa to be peddling this Christmas.  It’ll be available to “all eligible brands” in the US from 2023, before rolling out on customer Echo devices midway through next year.

As a result of the Web3 firm’s acquisition of FHM, the cryptocurrency will now “list and merge all its digital use-cases and platforms into the new VNB-built Cowrie exchange and partnerships.” Supporting Clients’ Digital Needs Virtual Nation Builders (VNB), a Web3 technology firm, recently revealed it had acquired FHM (Pty) Ltd., the South Africa-based creator of what is dubbed Africa’s first cryptocurrency — safcoin. In a statement, VNB, which is 30% owned by the blockchain law firm Schindlers Attorneys, described the combination of the two businesses as an important step that will support their respective “clients’ digital needs in the Web3 revolution.” As a result of FHM’s acquisition by VNB, the safcoin cryptocurrency, which was launched in 2018, “will list and merge all its digital use-cases and platforms into the new VNB-built Cowrie exchange and partnerships.” Commenting on the plans to list on more exchanges, Neil Ferreira, the co-founder and CEO at FHM, said: Together with VNB, we plan to extend our global reach with more international exchange partner listings. We had good support from the international crypto market with our first listing, and we are proud to be flying the SA [South African] flag into the global crypto sphere. Described as South Africa’s first proof-of-work cryptocurrency to list on a global exchange platform, safcoin is reportedly traded on Hotbit and Chainex. Blockchain Enabled Opportunities Meanwhile, Maurice Crespi, a partner at Schindlers Attorneys and the CEO of VNB, is quoted in the statement touting the two’s companies’ involvement in the successful auction of the non-fungible token (NFT) of former South African president Nelson Mandela’s arrest warrant. “The sale gave a glimpse of the possibilities offered by the digital realm through virtualisation. The opportunities that blockchain enables and its applications are no longer limited to finance. The use of blockchain—and specifically smart contracts—can be applied in various industries, including community upliftment and business efficiency,” Crespi explained. REUTERS/Amir Cohen/File Photo Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com TEL AVIV, Sept 18 (Reuters) – Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (TEVA.TA) expects to finalise an opioid settlement in the United States by year-end and start paying in 2023, its chief executive said on Sunday. After years of negotiations, Israel-based Teva in July proposed a $4.35 billion nationwide settlement – mostly cash and partly medicines that will amount to $300 million to $400 million over 13 years – to resolve its opioid lawsuits. read more U.S. states, cities and counties filed more than 3,000 lawsuits against opioid manufacturers, distributors and pharmacies, accusing them of playing down their addiction risk and failing to stop pills from being diverted for illegal use. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com CEO Kare Schultz said the company was working on legal wording that should be wrapped up by the end of September. It then needs approval from states and subdivisions within states. “When they opt in, once that is all done … then it goes into force and that means the first payments happen next year and go on for 13 years,” Schultz told a news conference. “So, by the end of the year, you should have this clarification that it all comes together and we will start paying next year.” Teva has denied wrongdoing, saying it sold legal medication that was approved for treatment of pain. The U.S. opioid crisis has caused more than 500,000 overdose deaths over the past two decades, including more than 80,000 in 2021 alone, according to government data. Schultz said Teva intended to continue to cut costs by closing some of its sites. Since 2017 it has reduced the number of manufacturing plants to 53 from 80 and it plans to close another 10 in the next few years. At the same time, Schultz said Teva would continue paying down its high debt level that has dropped to $20 billion from $34 billion and indicated that the company would likely not be impacted by rising interest rates. Conservative PAC’s Ads Seek To Make Nevada Governor’s Race A Referendum On Biden’s Policies – Las Vegas Sun https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/conservative-pacs-ads-seek-to-make-nevada-governors-race-a-referendum-on-bidens-policies-las-vegas-sun/ Christopher DeVargas A campaign billboard for Gov. Steve Sisolak featuring President Biden is seen on West Horizon Ridge Parkway near Horizon Drive in Henderson, Monday Sept. 12, 2022. By Casey Harrison (contact) Sunday, Sept. 18, 2022 | 2 a.m. For a particular campaign sign that has popped up across Las Vegas as the midterm elections draw near, the message couldn’t be more clear. At face value, anyway. It shows President Joe Biden and Gov. Steve Sisolak side-by-side in a chummy fashion, proclaiming them the “Democrat Dream Team for Nevada.” The catch: It’s not an ad that’s paid for by the Sisolak campaign. Rather, the ad comes from Better Nevada, a conservative political action committee advocating for Clark County Sheriff Lombardo, the Republican attempting to unseat Sisolak for the state’s highest elective office. The group is also responsible for several pro-Lombardo ads on Facebook. The social media’s ad tracking indicates 190 of these ads appear on its platform. Conflating a political candidate with an unpopular sitting president is a common election season tactic, said David Damore, a political science expert at UNLV. Conservatives have dogged Biden over high gas prices and record inflation rocking the nation, although the fuel pricing platform GasBuddy late last week showed the national average for a gallon of gas at $3.72 — far from the high of $5.02 in June, according to AAA. “The goal here, obviously, is to try to make the entire election a referendum on the Democrats in both Washington and in Nevada, as opposed to what the Democrats want, to make it a choice between candidates,” Damore said. “You saw that in 2018 with (Donald) Trump. It’s a clever effort to try and break through the noise.” In a statement to the Sun, Reeves Oyster, a spokeswoman for Sisolak’s campaign, called the ads “deceitful.” Neither Better Nevada nor Lombardo’s campaign responded to multiple requests for comment. In August, far-right news site Breitbart reported that more than 25 of the Biden-Sisolak signs would be on video billboards throughout Las Vegas and Reno, and another 650 four-foot-by-eight-foot signs across the state. “These signs are nothing more than a deceitful attempt to shift the narrative away from Joe Lombardo’s out-of-touch stances, corrupt record and flailing campaign,” Oyster said. Damore pointed out Democrats used a similar tactic earlier this year, running ads ahead of the Republican primaries supporting candidates they saw as either far-right or pro-Trump, with the hope being if they won their primary they would be an easily beatable opponent. Even Sisolak’s campaign launched a website, joelombardosplans.com, slamming Lombardo as an “anti-choice” candidate who would work to erase Nevada’s abortion protections (which are codified in the state’s constitution) and access to contraceptives. In a Twitter postMonday, Lombardo called the website, which is run by the Committee to Elect Steve Sisolak, “fake.” Sisolak’s campaign defended the website, stating it’s just showing voters Lombardo’s record when speaking publicly. Biden won Nevada by about 2.5% in 2020, and voters here have sided with the Democratic presidential nominee since Barack Obama in 2008. Yet, Nevada is firmly entrenched as a battleground state, and a close outcome is expected in the governor’s race and the U.S. Senate race.Incumbent Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto is seeking reelection against Adam Laxalt in a contest that could determine which party has the majority representation in the U.S. Senate. An Emerson College poll published Tuesday showed Sisolak and Lombardo locked in a dead heat with fewer than eight weeks to go before the election. It found both candidates polling at 40% with 12% undecided and another 4% planning to vote for someone else. Fifty-two percent of respondents, however, said no matter whom they support they expect Sisolak to win reelection. The poll also found that just 37% of Nevada respondents approve of Biden’s job performance and 53% disapprove. Should Biden and Trump face off again in the 2024 presidential election, 43% of Nevadans polled would support Trump, compared to 40% who say they would vote for Biden. Liberal voters nationwide have been energized after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned its landmark ruling in Roe v. Wade, and the passage of bills in recent months like the Inflation Reduction Act as well as Biden’s recent decision to erase up to $20,000 in federal student debt have stopped the party’s sliding popularity, Damore said. And even though polling shows a slew of competitive races nationally, it will still be difficult for Democrats, who control both chambers of Congress, to retain control, Damore added. “I think for a long time, Democrats, even in the early part of the summer, were really struggling for a message, and now they have one,” Damore said. “Republicans are now sort of caught a little flat-footed … but again, the broad goal here is to make this a referendum about the party in power.”

Organising this type of getaway doesn’t have to be stressful, however, since there are plenty of locations that everyone in your family will love. To help you start planning, vacation rental service Holidu created a list of the best cities for multi-generational vacations. By Madeline Buiano To create their roundup of destinations, Holidu analysed cities around the world based on a range of factors that are important to each age group—from Baby Boomers to Gen Zers—including the number of museums, family friendliness, quality of roads, 5-star rated things to do, and amount of social media hashtags. The scores in each category were then used to find which cities are the best for vacationing with people in different age groups. The top spot goes to Madrid, Spain, which scored well for a number of different factors across the board. The family-friendly destination is ideal for food lovers; it’s home to 125 Michelin Guide restaurants, which are awarded to restaurants worldwide. In addition to great restaurants, Madrid has 153 museums and 865 5-star rated activities—so you’ll never run of out things to do. Image Credit: Alex Azabache/Unsplash In second place is Tokyo, Japan: The country’s capital offers great opportunities for people who enjoy being outdoors. With a variety of different landscapes, beaches, forests, and mountains, Tokyo truly has something for everyone. You’ll also be in close proximity to Mount Fuji, the highest peak in Japan—which is great if you’re travelling with any adventure seekers. New York City rounded out the top three. Home to the most Michelin Guide restaurants in the world — there are 512 to choose from—the Big Apple is the place to visit for fine dining. But there’s more than just fanciful eating to keep you occupied during your trip. From the Statue of Liberty to the Empire State Building, there’s also plenty to do and see. Stop Blaming The Devil For Your Sicknesses – Dr. Brightson – Ghana Business News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/stop-blaming-the-devil-for-your-sicknesses-dr-brightson-ghana-business-news/ Desist from blaming the devil for your sicknesses, and seek healthcare services early to avoid complications, Dr Kennedy Brightson, Medical Superintendent of the Dodowa District Hospital has admonished the public. Dr Brightson, who is also the Chairman of the Greater Accra Medical Superintendents said most people resort to prayers and other sources when faced with some medical challenges only to report to the hospitals when the issue deteriorated. He gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Prampram near Tema during free health screening for residents of Prampram and Lakpleku in the Ningo-Prampram District by the Greater Accra Medical Superintendent group. He said: “Satan is even tired for being accused for causing common sense diseases that can easily be handled at the hospital, a lot of them resort to prayers for their medical issues.” Dr. Brightson said it was important for the public especially patients to listen to their health professionals; waiting till the condition deteriorate meant nothing much could be done to save the situation. Touching on the health screening exercise, he said it was an initiative by the Members of the Greater Accra Medical Superintendents from the 23 public polyclinics and 14 hospitals in the region to give back to society and bring healthcare closer to the people. He said together with other health officials during the exercise provided free consultation for Out Patient Department (OPD) illnesses such as blood pressure, diabetes, malaria, and others. They also provided free laboratory services, ENT and dental services, as well as medications for residents at the three outreach points at Prampram Polyclinic, Lower Prampram seaside, and within the Lakpleku community near Ningo. The exercise also saw three minor surgeries being conducted at a newly commissioned theatre at the Prampram Polyclinic, as well as the registration of children aged below 18 years, and adults aged 70 and above unto the National Health Insurance Scheme. He said apart from the OPD cases seen during the exercise, isolated issues of Burkitis Lymphoma (tumour), gynaecological issues, abdominal masses, infected dog bite, and a giant goitre were also handled. Ndayisenga had fled his country, Burundi, after he was coerced to commit killings and refused and is now determined to make a better life for himself and his family: “I am waiting for the day that we can leave this country. “I thought this country would be a better life for me and my family, but I had a big problem in my country. I became a target when I didn’t do what they asked me to do, to go on a mission and kill, and I left for safety reasons.” The City of Cape Town’s Vanessa Scholtz said they were not able to comment about the conditions of the camp as it was a Department of Home Affairs issue. Department of Home Affairs spokesperson, David Hlabane, has promised feedback on the matter. Department of Social Development spokesperson Esther Lewis said their officials would assist those in need in the camp once they received a report. “Members of the public can access them by visiting or contacting their nearest DSD offices. Interventions are done based on the outcome of assessments. Matthew du Plessis, acting Provincial Manager at the South African Human Rights Commission, said: “We are aware of this matter and have been monitoring the situation and engaging with the relevant departments.” Weekend Argus

Purdue – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/watch-big-man-rumbles-for-thrilling-pick-six-as-syracuse-lineman-takes-it-to-the-house-vs-purdue-cbs-sports/ There are bad passes, ill-advised passes and awful passes. Then there’s what Purdue quarterback Aidan O’Connell threw on Saturday against Syracuse. One does not need to be a QB guru to know not to attempt a pass while being tackled by a defender. Especially on first down. And especially deep in your own end of the field. If it’s fourth down and a do-or-die situation? OK, maybe. But not on first down. If O’Connell’s parents hired me when he was a child, maybe this play could’ve been averted. But they didn’t, and now Purdue must live with the results. Of course, there are two sides to every coin. If O’Connell’s parents had hired me to teach Aidan not to throw this pass, Syracuse defensive tackle Caleb Okechukwu wouldn’t have scored this interception return for a touchdown. And the last thing we would want to do is rob a beast of a man of Okechukwu of the joy that comes with a big-boy pick six. It’s a real darned if you do, darned if you don’t situation. Life is complicated, folks; there are no easy answers. But there are Big Boy Touchdowns. (Plus, a few minutes later, O’Connell unleashed a dime to Charlie Jones for a 55-yard touchdown, so he recovered just fine.)

Creepy-Looking VR Gadget ‘mutalk’ Allows Metaverse Users To Scream Like Nobody’s Listening – Screen Shot https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/creepy-looking-vr-gadget-mutalk-allows-metaverse-users-to-scream-like-nobodys-listening-screen-shot/ Introducing ‘mutalk’, a new VR device created by Tokyo-based company Shiftall which acts as a mouth muzzle microphone that can capture sound directly from your mouth without the interference of background noise. According to Shiftall’s website for the odd-looking technology, “the mutalk is a Bluetooth microphone with a mute function that prevents your voice from leaking out.” In other words, the device is designed to allow users in the metaverse to produce a lot of noise without fearing disturbing those around them. The company goes on to state that the contemporary ‘pear of anguish’ comes with a detachable strap and can also be used for business purposes, such as conference calls. How lovely, a multipurpose netizen’s dream. Although the main idea behind the mutalk is sound (no pun intended), many have been quick to point out the device’s creepy design and bizarre advertising pictures. Science and tech news publication Futurism described its publicity as “doctored stock images muzzling unsuspecting models with a white VR headset-shaped appendage covering their mouths.” The article went on to stress how the “sensory deprivation” mouth-piece appears to look like an intense mediaeval gearpiece more likely to be worn in a traumatising interrogation or BDSM dungeon than in a VR enthusiast’s living room. It should also be noted that Shiftall is owned by tech-giant Panasonic and boasts an impressive catalogue of unique virtual reality products. One of the most, shall we say, special designs is a smart mirror that comes with an equally helpful and daunting ‘benefit’—the ability to spot (and shame) an outfit-repeater. NeSSA (Never Same Shirt Again) may well be your best friend or your biggest nightmare. The mirror digitally connects to the user’s calendar and, using a smart algorithm, infers from the names of attendees and events whether or not the (un)lucky owner’s current outfit has already been worn in front of the specific person they’re about to meet. If that’s the case, the mirror will automatically activate an inbuilt light feature and “warn” the user. Thankfully, there are no current plans to collaborate with Amazon’s Alexa—a voice-activated response may be too painful. Other Shiftall products include: HaritoraX 1.1, a space-saving wireless full-body tracking device and Pebble Feel, a VR experience and technology that allows you to customise and feel temperature preferences within the metaverse. Virtual reality has continued to develop at great speed over the past few years. In 2020, robotic VR boots that allowed users to walk without actually moving forward made waves as a groundbreaking immersive experience. This technological feat, however, is now considered by many as child’s play in comparison to new products such as mutalk. It’s both exciting and slightly terrifying to consider what the virtual future will hold. Image by Nora Smith The past year has seen an increase in global mobilization around feminist causes and the promotion of women’s rights. Alas, despite some notable victories in courts and legislatures, women across the world remain vulnerable to violence, oppression, discrimination, and violation of their rights—including the right to control their body. Women of colour in predominantly white societies appear to suffer even more greatly from discrimination, as in addition to prevalent misogyny they have to contend with deep-rooted racial biases that limit their access to opportunities available to white women. In other words, minority women have yet another layer of prejudice they must obliterate in order to achieve genuine equality, whether in education, employment, or visibility on the political stage. A creative attempt at tackling this problem comes from Debias VR, a tech company founded by Clorama Dorvilias and her business partner Jessica Outlaw that focuses on eliminating bias from the classroom environment. Dorvilias and Outlaw have developed a VR game called Teacher’s Lens, which uses interactive and immersive learning experiences in order to encourage educators to become aware of and ultimately transcend their gender and race biases. Dorvilias and Outlaw cite various studies which indicate that in particular subjects (primarily STEM), teachers tend to favour male students, discourage girls from participating, and have generally lower expectations from students of colour. Dorvilias, a woman of colour herself, has also drawn her own experience with biased professors who discouraged her from embarking on a career in the tech industry in order to develop a tool that exposes and remedies classroom inequalities. Teacher’s Lens provides educators with a VR headset which simulates the experience of a teacher conducting a class to a diverse group of students. Throughout the simulation, teachers are presented with various scenarios which potentially point out their subconscious biases, such as which student they’re inclined to call on first, discipline, etc. “Black and Latino students are disciplined at higher rates and tracked into AP courses at lower rates so it would be good if people would start making decisions based on data and examine some underlying structural issues,” said Outlaw in an interview for Motherboard. One of the primary goals of Dorvilias and Outlaw is to remove all shame and guilt aspects from the process of debiasing, as the two note that often people are left with a considerable amount of pent-up resentment following a diversity training. “Bias training shouldn’t be there to shame,” Dorvilias tells Motherboard, “People should feel good about making others feel accepted. Debias isn’t something that you can work out in a day. It’s a behaviour that you have to work through. We want to give people the capacity to work in a safe and comfortable space.” It appears that an initiative such as Teacher’s Lens may very well achieve this by simulating an environment that is truly engaging. As opposed to being lectured, educators who enroll in the programme have an opportunity to tap into their often subconscious thought-processes and experience in real-time the scope and nature of their bias. Furthermore, unlike many lecture-based diversity trainings, Teacher’s Lens uses personalised data that is accessible at all times and thus helps people monitor and track their progress over time, which encourages educators to make a real change in their approach. What we often fail to acknowledge is that the damaging effects of racial and gender-based prejudice reverberate far beyond the walls of the classroom or office, and permeate all aspects of our lives. A society that is molded upon pillars of bias ultimately does an immense disservice to all its members. As stated by Dorvilias, “It affects society and our economy as a whole when you draw the line on what you think a person is capable of doing based on how they look. What limitations are we placing on society and our innovation when people in power put a cap on who gets to succeed and who doesn’t?” Could technology be harnessed to promote genuine equality between the sexes and races? Dorvilias seems pretty convinced that it could, “The nature of VR has limits to it. Until people try it, they won’t really understand why it’s so powerful. Once they try it, they’re transformed.” This article was published as part of an ongoing partnership between Screen Shot and Fair Planet.

One of those on her list was Get Your Guide, an app that helps people find the best things to do when arriving in a new destination. New Quanzhou-Vladivostok Container Line Launched Port Technology International
New Quanzhou-Vladivostok Container Line Launched Port Technology International
New Quanzhou-Vladivostok Container Line Launched – Port Technology International https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/new-quanzhou-vladivostok-container-line-launched-port-technology-international/ A new container shipping line has been launched in China’s Quanzhou connecting the Russian port city of Vladivostok. A Panamanian containership carrying 12 TEU of cargo left Quanzhou on 15 September, according to Xinhua. It is expected to arrive at its destination around 22 September. Quanzhou was the starting point of the ancient maritime Silk Road. The city’s commerce bureau said that Quanzhou’s trade volume with countries and regions along the current maritime Silk Road surpassed 100 billion yuan ($14.3 billion) last year. Earlier this week, local authorities in China ordered the stop of all operations at major ports as Muifa, one of this year’s strongest typhoons, hit the country’s coastal areas on 14 September. After passing Taiwan, typhoon Muifa turned north toward the Port of Shanghai – Asia’s largest container shipping hub – as well as the Ningbo region, the second busiest container port complex in China.

Grand Theft Auto 6 Gameplay Supposedly Leaks Revealing Robbery And More – ComicBook.com https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/grand-theft-auto-6-gameplay-supposedly-leaks-revealing-robbery-and-more-comicbook-com/ Tons of purported footage from Grand Theft Auto VI has leaked online, revealing the first looks at the game’s two protagonists, a robbery, and much, much more. Grand Theft Auto VI is one of the most anticipated games of all time as it plans to follow up on the second best-selling game to date. It has sold billions of dollars worth of copies, met the praises of critics and fans alike, and has been a cultural touchstone for the gaming industry for nearly a decade. With that said, the bar is high and fans are hungry for this game. Although Rockstar Games has confirmed that it’s working on a new Grand Theft Auto game, people want a trailer, a logo, or something to help the wait go by with more ease. Well, likely to Rockstar’s fury, a bunch of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay seems to have leaked. The leak comes from GTAForums user teapotuberhacker, who claims to have been responsible for a massive Uber hack that just recently happened. The leak includes 90 videos, all from various points throughout development. While some are just a character walking or testing some technical stuff, there are a few interesting tidbits to pull. The most notable video features the rumored Bonnie and Clyde-like couple (supposedly named Lucia and Jason) robbing a diner, Pulp Fiction-style, and doing crowd control before the cops arrive. Another video shows a character walking with a pistol in their hand and a rifle on their back, suggesting Rockstar will be using the Red Dead Redemption 2 inventory system that only lets you keep a couple of weapons on you at a time. Previous GTA games let you carry a full arsenal in an invisible pocket, but that may be going away with this new entry. A different video shows off one of Rockstar’s proprietary tools in action, further lending some credibility to the leak. It also appears like the game will feature incredibly dense crowds based on one video in a strip club. It’s extremely important to emphasize that some of these videos date back to 2021 and if real, this represents a work in progress for a game that will not release for years. Therefore, do not expect it to blow your hair back with the world’s greatest graphics or details. Of course, this could all be one big elaborate fake, so take it with a grain of salt. GTAForums users are currently debating whether it’s authentic or not, but many have noted the amount of effort it would take to get the voice actors, create the systems at play here, and more. 0comments What do you make of the supposed leaked GTA 6 footage? AP YEREVAN, Armenia — A U.S. congressional delegation headed by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi arrived Saturday in Armenia, where a cease-fire has held for three days after an outburst of fighting with neighboring Azerbaijan that killed more than 200 troops from both sides. The U.S. Embassy said the visit will include a meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. On Friday, Pelosi told reporters in Berlin that the trip “is all about human rights and the respecting the dignity and worth of every person.” Other members of the U.S. delegation include Rep. Frank Pallone, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and congresswomen Jackie Speier and Anna Eshoo. A cease-fire took effect on Wednesday evening following two days of heavy fighting that marked the largest outbreak of hostilities in nearly two years. Armenia and Azerbaijan traded blame for the shelling, with Armenian authorities accusing Baku of unprovoked aggression and Azerbaijani officials saying their country was responding to Armenian attacks. Pashinyan said at least 135 Armenian troops were killed in the fighting. Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said Friday it had lost 77. The two ex-Soviet countries have been locked in a decades-old conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, which is part of Azerbaijan but has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia since a separatist war there ended in 1994. During a six-week war in 2020, Azerbaijan reclaimed broad swaths of Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent territories held by Armenian forces. More than 6,700 people died in the fighting, which ended with a Russia-brokered peace agreement. Moscow deployed about 2,000 troops to the region to serve as peacekeepers.
