Abrams Leans Into Legalizing Sports Betting In Georgia As Kemp’s Lead Widens – NBC News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/abrams-leans-into-legalizing-sports-betting-in-georgia-as-kemps-lead-widens-nbc-news/ With polls showing Stacey Abrams trailing Gov. Brian Kemp, the Democratic challenger in Georgia’s governor’s race has leaned heavily into highlighting her support for legalizing sports betting in the state. Politics watchers say the effort is designed to emphasize another policy difference between Abrams and the Republican incumbent — and to help her make up ground in a race where polls have shown his lead widening in recent weeks.  Abrams’ campaign has released a series of 15-second, 30-second and static ads that focus on her support for allowing sports betting and slam her opponent for his opposition. The ads were timed to the start of college football season, with many running on sites connected to Georgia Bulldogs college football and online sports betting. “As governor, Stacey Abrams will work to legalize sports betting to invest in education for our young people,” a narrator says in one ad. In another, a narrator says, “While Georgians still place bets, Kemp is forcing them out of state to do it, taking the tax dollars with them.”  “That means even when Georgia wins the bet, states like Tennessee get the tax money,” the narrator ads.  The ads followed a highly publicized speech by Abrams last month in which she outlined her broad economic agenda. In it, Abrams said that she supported a state constitutional amendment to legalize sports and casino gambling and that she would propose using the financial proceeds to fund educational initiatives like universal access to technical college, need-based financial aid for higher education and the funding of HOPE merit scholarships in the state. More ads focused on the issue are forthcoming, a source with knowledge of the Abrams campaign’s plans told NBC News. Abrams campaign spokesman Alex Floyd told NBC News that the “latest ads on sports betting are meant to draw attention to what Georgians already know: Gaming is happening in our state, but right now we are missing out on millions in revenue that could fund expanded access to higher education.” Kemp has opposed sports betting in the state since 2018, when a landmark Supreme Court ruling allowed for states to make it legal. Last month, Kemp said he remained opposed to any efforts to legalize it or casino gambling in the state, but a campaign spokesperson downplayed his opposition in a statement to NBC News. “On sports betting, Governor Kemp has taken no position and would work alongside legislative leadership to determine the best path forward,” spokesman Tate Mitchell said. Over the last four years, bills that would legalize sports betting in the state have stalled in the state Legislature. Meanwhile, at least 31 states, including New York and New Jersey, have legalized sports betting in the years since the Supreme Court ruling. California could be next, depending on what voters decide on a pair of measures that will appear on the November ballot in the state. Polling in Georgia has shown wide support for legalizing sports betting. A 2020 survey by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution showed that nearly 6 in 10 Georgia voters supported it. Georgia political experts said that Kemp has largely remained opposed to the issue to maintain levels of support from evangelical voters in his base, who are staunchly against legalizing gambling. That, they said, could give Abrams an opening to go after a chunk of voters who care about the issue while not alienating any of her own supporters. That could help her close a gap in polls that in recent weeks have shown Kemp widening a once narrow lead. “For the Republicans, the problem is that there’s an important part of their base that is opposed to this, so it makes sense for Abrams to put this out there,” said Alan Abramowitz, an expert on Georgia elections and a political scientist at Emory University. Real Clear Politics’ latest polling average shows Kemp leading Abrams by 5.5 percentage points. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report has rated the race “lean Republican.” “The general sense here is that Kemp is ahead, so it’s probably wise to go after a segment of the electorate — even if it’s marginal — that cares about it while also not turning off anyone who would otherwise vote for Abrams,” Abramowitz added.

Web3 Games And Metaverse Projects Have Attracted Nearly $750,000,000 In Investments Since August: DappRadar – The Daily Hodl https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/web3-games-and-metaverse-projects-have-attracted-nearly-750000000-in-investments-since-august-dappradar-the-daily-hodl/ A new DappRadar report says investment in blockchain gaming and metaverse projects is going strong with major investors sinking big money into the crypto subsectors. According to the data acquisition and analysis firm, Web3 gaming and metaverse projects have collected $748 million in investments since August despite the general downturn in the crypto space. Among the big investments last month is the $200 million raised by mobile gaming icon Gabriel Leydon for Limit Break, a firm focused on blockchain-based games. Temasek, a global investment firm owned by Singapore, invested $100 million into Animoca Brands, a venture capital firm and Web3 gaming publisher. According to the report, the total amount invested in blockchain gaming for the year is forecasted to come in at $10.2 billion. Last year, it was $4 billion. Source: DappRadar Says DappRadar, “The amount of investments demonstrates that despite the challenging and uncertain conditions in the digital asset markets, major investment entities remain bullish on the GameFi industry.” According to the analytics firm, games and metaverse projects receive about a third of the investments in the GameFi industry. The rest mostly goes to infrastructure and investment firms. Source: DappRadar DappRadar concludes the report by saying that the blockchain gaming space is still in its embryonic stage with massive potential for growth. “While there are still several areas for improvement, the sector is constantly developing and inventing. GameFi’s future looks bright, and is on the route to becoming the lead towards Web3.” Don’t Miss a Beat – Subscribe to get crypto email alerts delivered directly to your inbox Check Price Action Follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Telegram Surf The Daily Hodl Mix Check Latest News Headlines &nbsp Disclaimer: Opinions expressed at The Daily Hodl are not investment advice. M2 MacBook Air Vs Dell XPS 13 Plus Gadgetguy.com.au
M2 MacBook Air Vs Dell XPS 13 Plus Gadgetguy.com.au
M2 MacBook Air Vs Dell XPS 13 Plus – Gadgetguy.com.au https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/m2-macbook-air-vs-dell-xps-13-plus-gadgetguy-com-au/ We recently reviewed both the M2 powered MacBook Air and Dell’s XPS 13 Plus and found that they have a lot in common despite being tied to two completely different operating systems. While the MacBook runs MacOS and the XPS runs Windows 11, these two machines represent the most powerful 13-inch ultraportables money can buy. They also have stunning designs and impressive features but which one should you put down your hard-earned money for? To find out, we decided to pit these two machines directly against each other to determine a winner.   Design Both the M2 MacBook Air and Dell XPS 13 Plus come with a fresh case design, and, while the former plays it safe, the latter takes some radical departures from previous models.   Most notably, the Dell XPS 13 Plus ditches the traditional function row keys for LED capacitive keys that can switch between media shortcuts or function keys. While they look slick, the lack of an actual keypress means you’ll need to look at the key to see if it’s pressed, and is a feature we could do without. However, the keyboards on both machines feel great to type on, but the XPS 13 Plus offers a bit more travel and satisfying feedback than the Air.  The second notable change is the XPS’s invisible glass trackpad that blends in seamlessly with the keyboard deck. Dell uses a haptic trackpad just like the one found in Apple’s machine, meaning it uses force sensors that mimic the downward motion of a trackpad rather than a physically moving surface. There are no lines to indicate where the trackpad begins or ends but it quickly becomes second nature to use and is just as responsive as Apple’s touchpad.   Like Apple, Dell uses an aluminium outer enclosure for its notebook, which delivers the same 1.2kg weight as the Air as well as a premium finish. The M2 MacBook Air does offer a few more colour options with the new midnight blue colour looking particularly fetching They both feel well built but we personally prefer the softer rounded edges of the M2 MacBook Air instead of the sharp edges of the XPS 13 Plus, which tend to dig into the palm and wrist when carrying it around. We also like how the Air has a proper lip that makes it easy to open one handed and is something we can’t say about the XPS 13 Plus. Otherwise, from the near bezel-less display to the edge-to-edge keyboard, you won’t find any wasted space on the XPS 13 Plus. The result is a machine that is more compact in size than the M2 MacBook Air, even if it is ever so slightly thicker.  The MacBook Air (left) and Dell XPS 13 Plus (right) will look great in any cafe or office Display  Both the M2 MacBook Air and the base model of the XPS 13 Plus use an LCD display capped at a 60Hz refresh rate with excellent visibility outdoors thanks to the rated 500 nits brightness.  However, for an extra $200 to $300, the Dell XPS 13 Plus can be configured with either a 3.5K resolution OLED screen or a 4K LCD panel, delivering a superior viewing experience.  Ports The MacBook Air and XPS 13 Plus come with a limited selection of ports but Apple has Dell beat by at least having the decency to include a headphone jack as well as a dedicated charging port so you don’t need to use up one of the two USB-C ports. What’s more, the charging port is MagSafe, which gracefully detaches and won’t take the laptop down with it when someone trips over the power cord.  Dell does at least try to soften the blow by including a 3.5mm adapter in the box but that’s just another thing to have to carry around and potentially lose.  Dell was at least a little bit more thoughtful when it came to placement by positioning each of the Thunderbolt ports on either side of the machine, making routing cables easier than on the MacBook Air, which has the ports on the left side only.  Battery life  Other than having a small footprint, what makes an ultraportable, well, portable is the battery life. This is where the M2 MacBook Air outclasses every other notebook in its class, delivering a runtime in excess of 12 hours.  The XPS 13 Plus pales in comparison, topping out at 5 hours of actual real world use. The XPS 13 Plus doesn’t exactly sip power when the lid is closed either, which isn’t an issue on the M2 MacBook Air.  Dell does at least include a faster 60W charger in the box that delivers 80% charge in just one hour as opposed to the 30W brick that comes with the base model M2 MacBook Air.  Speakers  The quad speakers on the Dell XPS 13 Plus sound very impressive for a laptop of its size, delivering punchy audio that is both louder and has a bit more bass than the M2 MacBook Air.  The XPS 13 Plus is a hair thicker than the Air but has a smaller footprint overall Performance  The Dell XPS 13 Plus with its 12th Gen Intel Core i7-1280P CPU and the MacBook Air with its Apple-made M2 chip are some of the fastest performing laptops on the market. In terms of raw benchmarks, the XPS 13 Plus beat the M2 MacBook Air in GeekBench’s multi-core score (9525 vs 8627) but Apple’s machine has its nose slightly in front on single core (1895 vs 1701).  Similarly, switching to Cinebench’s R23 test revealed a similar gap in performance between the two, with the XPS 13 Plus delivering a multi-core score of 9208 vs the Air’s 8219. Video encoding tests were also faster by almost a minute.  The XPS 13 Plus also packs a significantly faster internal SSD drive with read and write speeds almost twice as fast as the drive found inside the M2 MacBook Air. This is worth keeping in mind if you’re someone who needs to regularly move large files around. The XPS 13 Plus storage is also user upgradeable whereas on the M2 Air, the storage is soldered onto the main board and can’t be upgraded.  But here’s the thing – I had to switch the XPS 13 Plus to the ‘ultra performance’ battery profile to get this level of performance, which kicks up the fans to a noisy level and increases the surface temperature of the machine to an uncomfortably warm degree. The M2 Air on the other hand, remained whisper quiet and fairly cool to the touch thanks to a fanless cooling system while consuming half as much energy than the XPS 13 Plus (15w vs 28w). What’s more, the M2 Air generally performed faster in Adobe products such as Premier Pro and Photoshop thanks to optimisations under the hood as well the more powerful integrated GPU.  Although the M2 chip offers a meatier GPU, gaming performance still trailed behind the XPS 13 Plus as games are simply better optimised for Windows. What’s more, running Windows natively on M1 or M2 machines isn’t possible since Apple ditched support for Boot Camp after it made the switch from Intel.  Apple has a lot of work to do if it is to lure big name developers to port their games across natively for MacOS, which likely won’t happen until the company embraces industry standard graphics drivers such as Vulkan and OpenGL. That said, there are some notable titles coming later this year such as Resident Evil Village and No Man’s Sky. During WWDC in June, Capcom demonstrated the M2 MacBook Air running Resident Evil Village at 1080p.    Price  The M2 MacBook Air starts at a lower price of $1899 versus the XPS 13 Plus $2349 but Dell gives you more storage (512GB) and RAM (16GB) out of the gate. Stepping up to the 512GB model of the M2 MacBook Air brings the price to parity with the XPS 13 Plus although you will need to spend another $400 to get the Core-i7 chip (the base model comes with the less capable Core-i5 chip).  GadgetGuy’s take  In terms of raw CPU and storage speeds, Dell’s XPS 13 Plus outperforms the M2 MacBook Air while also offering superior display options wrapped up in a more compact and striking design.   But as an ultraportable, the M2 MacBook Air is the overall better choice delivering far superior battery life and better performance in more GPU-intensive applications, all while remaining cool to the touch. The M2 Air also has the XPS 13 Plus beat in the ports department with a dedicated charging port and headphone jack in addition to a superior built-in webcam.  More laptop news and reviews on GadgetGuy

Celsius Network Plots A Comeback After A Crypto Crash – The New York Times https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/celsius-network-plots-a-comeback-after-a-crypto-crash-the-new-york-times/ The chief executive of the experimental crypto bank Celsius has told employees about an audacious plan to revive the firm, which filed for bankruptcy in July. Alex Mashinsky, the chief executive of Celsius, wants to rebuild the company by offering cryptocurrency storage and charging fees for certain transactions.Credit…Bruno de Carvalho/SOPAImages, via Associated Press Sept. 13, 2022Updated 6:35 p.m. ET The collapse of the experimental cryptocurrency bank Celsius Network was one of the main drivers of this spring’s crypto crash, which erased nearly $1 trillion from the market and ruined thousands of investors. Celsius filed for bankruptcy in July. Now it’s angling for a comeback. At a meeting with employees on Sept. 8, Alex Mashinsky, the chief executive of Celsius, outlined an audacious plan to revive the firm, according to a recording of the event shared with The New York Times. He and Oren Blonstein, another Celsius executive, said they hoped to rebuild the company with a focus on custody — storing people’s cryptocurrencies for them, and then charging fees on certain types of transactions. They said the project was code-named Kelvin, after the unit of temperature. Mr. Mashinsky, 56, faced skeptical questions from employees. He compared the rebuilding process to corporate turnarounds at some of the world’s most famous brands, including Pepsi, which went bankrupt in 1923 and 1931. “Does it make the Pepsi taste less good?” Mr. Mashinsky asked employees. “Delta filed for bankruptcy. Do you not fly Delta because they filed for bankruptcy?” A recording of the meeting was sent to Tiffany Fong, a Celsius customer who has made YouTube videos about the springtime crash. She shared the recording with The Times, which confirmed its authenticity. In a statement, a Celsius spokeswoman said the company regularly held internal meetings to “prepare for all scenarios.” “Our employees are central to our efforts,” the statement said. “We will continue to rely on them to assist in preparing whatever requirements would be necessary to execute the final recovery plan as quickly as possible.” Celsius is attempting a revival at a moment of transition for the crypto industry, as start-ups whose reckless practices triggered the downturn try to regroup. In recent months, other instigators of the crash — including Do Kwon, the trash-talking founder of the failed cryptocurrency Luna — have also pursued fresh crypto ventures. Celsius rose to prominence with a marketing promise that proved impossible to sustain: Deposit your digital assets and receive interest as high as 18 percent. The company also let customers take out loans using their deposits as collateral and participate in “staking,” an investment maneuver that allows users to earn rewards on crypto holdings. In 2021, Celsius controlled assets worth $20 billion and had one million customers. But Celsius generated its high returns by making risky investments that quickly turned sour when the crypto market crashed. Tens of thousands of customers still have digital assets trapped on the platform. In court this summer, Celsius reported that it owed customers $4.7 billion. Celsius’s fate is not really in Mr. Mashinsky’s hands. Any proposal would require approval by the federal bankruptcy judge in New York, Martin Glenn, who is overseeing the process. The outcome could take a number of forms, such as a buyer purchasing parts of the company. At the employee meeting, Mr. Mashinsky said Celsius was working with a legal entity representing the company’s creditors — a group known as the Committee of Unsecured Creditors, or U.C.C. — to devise a plan to restart operations. “Most of our community, including the U.C.C., has asked us to continue services,” he said. “They think that these services are valuable, and they want to continue using the loans and the staking and the custody and things like that.” But after meeting with Celsius representatives, the committee had concerns about Mr. Mashinsky’s continuing involvement in the company and major questions about the feasibility of the Kelvin proposal, according to a person with knowledge of the matter. Lawyers for the committee declined to comment. The exact details of Celsius’s plan to restart remain unclear. The company has a Bitcoin mining operation, which could become part of the reorganized business. But at the meeting, Mr. Mashinsky and Mr. Blonstein focused on the possibility of storing crypto assets for Celsius’s users. Mr. Mashinsky said he could imagine charging customers a fee for access to a special, highly secure crypto wallet. In the past, Celsius marketed itself as a zero-fee service as part of its pitch that customers should “unbank” from traditional finance. Executives are now weighing a new approach. “If the foundation of our business is custody, and our customers are electing to do things like stake somewhere or swap one asset for the other, or take a loan against an asset as collateral, we should have the ability to charge a commission,” Mr. Blonstein told employees. Since Celsius filed for bankruptcy, customers have scrambled to get their crypto assets back, raising money to hire lawyers and plotting strategy in Telegram group chats. At the meeting, Mr. Blonstein said the company was planning a “unique crypto solution” to compensate customers, but he declined to go into the details. Mr. Blonstein also said Celsius was at a crucial point in a “hero’s journey” toward redemption. “This hero has a mission — something that they want to accomplish. They experience an initial success, they stumble, fall short in some way and have this dark moment,” he said. “If we are successful, it’s going to be a success story like one that’s never been seen before.” Even Apple, Mr. Mashinsky said, once considered bankruptcy as an option. “Are we going to be in the dustbin of companies that were great or almost great or great for a while but disappear?” he said. “The community is behind us.” Kitty Bennett contributed research.

NASA has a new target date to launch SLS megarocket After two failed attempts to launch its mega Moon rocket, NASA is planning for a third go at its inaugural Artemis mission. The space agency is now hoping to test the rocket on September 21 (September 22 for us) and finally launch it to space six days later, with a backup opportunity in early October. That is if Space Force agrees. — NASA (@NASA) September 12, 2022 2. Uber pays $150m in ‘drivers are workers’ suit Uber agreed to pay New Jersey $US100 million (around $150 million) in back taxes over claims the company misclassified thousands of drivers as independent contractors between 2014-2018. That mischaracterisation may have prevented thousands of workers from being able to receive critical resources like unemployment, disability and family leave insurance. We’ve seen similar here in Australia. 3. Intel self-leaks upcoming 13th-gen i5, i7, i9 CPU specs Intel accidentally dropped details for its upcoming slate of desktop processors on its Canadian site, and though the company was quick to pull the specs, the Internet Archive has your back for those looking to see the original version. Trash And Debris Cover Las Vegas Streets, Concerned Resident Says – KLAS – 8 News Now https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/trash-and-debris-cover-las-vegas-streets-concerned-resident-says-klas-8-news-now/ by: Mary Jane Belleza Posted: Sep 13, 2022 / 02:51 PM PDT Updated: Sep 13, 2022 / 03:04 PM PDT LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Las Vegas resident is tired of trash and debris filling the streets in the northwest part of the valley. Michael Kaczer has enjoyed coming to Lorenzi park several times a week but said recently he can’t help but notice the eyesores on the side of the streets. “I play here at Lorenzi park, I love playing here, it’s like a second home,” said Kaczer. “I play senior softball and it irks me that there’s garbage sitting 2 feet away from a trash receptacle and I pick it up and throw it away.” Kaczer, who only lives a few miles down from Lorenzi park near Rancho and Alta, said trash from plastic bottles to debris covers the roads. “It’s a horrible thing because I drive down Rancho and I see garbage piled up in the drainage systems on Rancho by the 95,” explained Kaczer. “The garbage doesn’t fall out of the sky by itself, and the airplanes certainly don’t drop it so it has to come from people’s hands, granted it comes from the homeless but there are people that just don’t care.” Clean-up on the valley’s freeways has been a joint effort between NDOT maintenance crews and a contractor. There are two NDOT crews that do sweeping and cleaning during overnight hours.   Those crews also frequently respond to emergency repairs and other maintenance issues.  Like other industries, NDOT has been facing staffing challenges with those crews. It’s not just Rancho and the 95. You can see trash sprawled down nearby streets like Vegas Drive as well as Washington Street. The City of Las Vegas oversees the general street maintenance on roughly 1,250 miles of roads in Las Vegas. This includes street sweeping; storm drain flood control and sewer maintenance. While the city and NDOT are doing their part to clean what they can, Kaczer said it’s up to us to help them. “I would like to see some type of a force, or litter task force, there are so many incarcerated individuals in Clark County that I think to do something positive even if it’s volunteers work,” said Kaczer. “Let’s just watch each other. You see something on the ground near your house pick it up, take it home and throw it away.” You can request a cleaning service through the city’s website or by calling 702-229-6227 and there are volunteer clean-up groups and organizations available to join.

Amtrak Train Cancellations: A Rail Strike Threatens More Disruptions The Washington Post
Amtrak Train Cancellations: A Rail Strike Threatens More Disruptions The Washington Post
Amtrak Train Cancellations: A Rail Strike Threatens More Disruptions – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/amtrak-train-cancellations-a-rail-strike-threatens-more-disruptions-the-washington-post/ Hundreds of Amtrak passengers had their plans ruined Tuesday after the railroad canceled more cross-country trains ahead of a possible strike that threatens to bring painful disruptions to the nation’s passenger rail. Major regional train systems also warned passengers to plan for alternate travel later this week, citing the potential of rail lines shutting down Friday if a strike isn’t averted. The escalating labor dispute between freight railroads and the unions representing their workers could alter travel and commuting plans for hundreds of thousands of Americans. Most Amtrak routes outside the Northeast Corridor and many commuter rail systems — including Chicago’s Metra and those serving Washington’s Maryland and Virginia suburbs — use tracks owned by freight lines. The freight industry has warned that a labor walkout as early as Friday would shut down 30 percent of the country’s freight and “halt most passenger and commuter rail services.” No deal had been reached by Tuesday evening. Amtrak’s first round of cancellations, announced Monday, began to hit U.S. stations Tuesday, with trips canceled on three long-distance trains connecting Chicago to the West Coast. The carrier announced another round of cancellations for Wednesday on those routes and seven other long-distance routes. The company said it was pulling the multiday train trips “to avoid possible passenger disruptions while on route.” Patrick Bayer, 33, received an alert about 11 a.m. Tuesday that his train from Chicago to Seattle was canceled, prompting a dash to book a flight to Seattle for a work conference. Bayer had carefully planned a mini-train vacation aboard the Empire Builder before the conference. “It is frustrating,” said Bayer, a data analyst from Philadelphia, who noted he was looking forward to his third cross-country train trip and the views of the Mississippi River, the Minneapolis skyline and Glacier National Park. With his bags packed, he also had to cancel an early-Wednesday flight from Philadelphia to Chicago, where he was to board the train. “I had to scramble this morning and switch it around to flights, unfortunately, when the train got canceled,” he said. The service reduction affects 10 of Amtrak’s 15 long-distance routes, but the company said adjustments are possible to all long-distance and most state-funded routes. Bayer considered rebooking his train travel to Thursday but said it became clear the disruptions to Amtrak’s travels to the Pacific Northwest are likely to continue the rest of the week. After a presidential board recommended a compromise between freight companies and unions, 10 of the 12 unions involved in talks have signed on, but the two largest have rejected offers. A federally mandated “cooling-off” period ends Friday, opening the possibility of a nationwide strike or lockout. If the freight railroads’ dispatchers — whose job is to route trains — aren’t working, passenger trains probably couldn’t operate on freight tracks. Amid the uncertainty, some regional transportation agencies are alerting passengers about shutdowns, while others say they are trying to assess the scope of any disruption. The Maryland Department of Transportation said freight railroad CSX notified it about the potential for a strike beginning Friday. The state said a strike would result in the “immediate suspension” of all service on two of its three MARC commuter lines serving the District — one to Baltimore and another to Martinsburg, W.Va. The Virginia Railway Express in Northern Virginia said CSX and Norfolk Southern have notified VRE of the potential for the labor strike, which would result in the suspension of all VRE train service until a resolution is reached. “We of course hold out hope for a resolution,” the agency said in a notice to passengers. “VRE recommends riders plan for alternative commute options in the event of a strike. We will continue to monitor the situation as events unfold and will keep our riders informed.” Metrolink, a network of seven lines serving Los Angeles and other Southern California communities, warned customers last week of the potential for disruptions. Five of the system’s seven lines use tracks owned by freight railroads, meaning as much as 70 percent of customers could be affected. “We are largely working from a position of darkness,” agency spokesman Scott Johnson said, adding that the agency would not be able to provide alternative transportation, such as buses, in the event of a strike. “Because of the possible expansive nature and the high number of trains, there simply are not enough buses to provide alternative service.” Not every commuter rail operation would be affected. RTD, the transit agency serving Denver, said it didn’t expect its lines to suffer during a strike. The nation’s biggest transit operator, New York’s MTA, said its two commuter rail services also were not expected to be affected. New Jersey Transit also didn’t expect disruptions. A strike would also leave much of the Northeast Corridor mostly unscathed because Amtrak owns the tracks, although minor schedule changes are likely on a small number of Northeast Regional trains serving destinations from Virginia to Boston. Amtrak will let passengers change their reservation free for departures scheduled through Oct. 31. Amtrak said Tuesday it is closely monitoring the labor negotiations over pay and working conditions. Amtrak operates the vast majority of its 21,000 route-miles on track owned, maintained and dispatched by freight railroads. Amtrak officials said the carrier will operate this week only services that will have enough time to reach their final destination. Passengers affected include those with trips aboard the Southwest Chief, Empire Builder, California Zephyr, City of New Orleans, Coast Starlight, Crescent, Lake Shore, Silver Star, Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle. “While we are hopeful that parties will reach a resolution, Amtrak has now begun phased adjustments,” the company said in a Tuesday statement. “These adjustments are necessary to ensure trains can reach their terminals before freight railroad service interruption if a resolution in negotiations is not reached.” The possible strike and early train cancellations spiked anxiety among travelers. “We’re traveling from WAS to NWK next week and I’m starting to get a little nervous that our train is going to be canceled,” a Maryland passenger tweeted at Amtrak on Tuesday afternoon. Another passenger who had departed New York said he was stuck in Chicago, where his train to Seattle was canceled. “Was looking forward to this for over a year — sad doesn’t begin to describe it lol,” the passenger tweeted. Others pleaded for more information about the status of trains later in the week, while some questioned why Amtrak was canceling trains scheduled to arrive at destinations before any strike. Amtrak’s long-distance trains often arrive late to their destinations. Jim Mathews, president and chief executive of the Rail Passengers Association, said canceling trains early in the week makes sense to avoid a scenario in which rail passengers could become stranded. “It’s better to cancel some trains now than to send some people out onto the road and then have them stranded in the middle of nowhere because the strike has hit, and the train can’t move anymore,” he said. “Meanwhile, we all keep our fingers crossed that finally [the railroads and labor unions] get to a settlement.” The disruptions come as demand for intercity trains is on the rise as the industry faces uncertainties because of staffing shortages. A third of Amtrak customers encountered delays in July, according to performance data, with an average delay of 71 minutes. Disruptions are more pronounced for travelers on long-distance routes — which are late more than half the time — and in parts of the country outside the Northeast Corridor. Ian Duncan contributed to this report.

Hannaford Donates $350000 To MaineHealth In Support Of Food As Medicine Program – Kennebec Journal And Morning Sentinel https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/hannaford-donates-350000-to-mainehealth-in-support-of-food-as-medicine-program-kennebec-journal-and-morning-sentinel/ Trampas Hutches, Franklin Community Health Network president, speaks Tuesday at a news conference at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington. The pilot program Food As Medicine received a $350,000 donation from Hannaford Supermarkets and the Hannaford Charitable Foundation. Seated from left are program participant Anne Glazier of Rumford, MaineHealth chief improvement officer Dr. Dora Anne Mills, Healthy Community Coalition of Greater Franklin County Director LeeAnna Lavoie and Hannaford Supermarkets Vice President of Retail Operations Todd Bullen. Dr. Emily Keller, a physician at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway and program planning committee member, is partially hidden by Hutches. Pam Harnden/Livermore Falls Advertiser FARMINGTON — A pilot program was given a major boost Tuesday with a donation of $350,000 from Hannaford Supermarkets and the Hannaford Charitable Foundation. Food As Medicine is a pilot program that prioritizes wholesome, fresh and nutritious foods as part of a comprehensive health care plan for under-resourced individuals and families with chronic health conditions. The program is through Franklin Community Health Network, which includes Franklin Memorial Hospital. “At MaineHealth our vision is working together with our communities for the health of everyone,” Trampas Hutches, president of Franklin Community Health Network, said. “Food insecurity is one of our top priorities. Our food is one of the most underrated medications out there, has a lot to do with the health outcomes we experience from the disease process. I am excited to announce this partnership.” The Hannaford donation is part of a new initiative, Eat Well, Be Well — A Path to Better Health, which will highlight the importance of nutritious food and achieving long-term wellness in a county with a history of food insecurity and  chronic illness, Todd Bullen, Hannaford Supermarkets vice president of retail operations, said. “(Hannaford) has a longstanding commitment to nourishing our communities, especially when it comes to improving access to food and meals for those who need it the most,” he noted. Anne Glazier of Rumford, a participant in the pilot program Food As Medicine, speaks Tuesday at a news conference at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington. Hannaford Supermarkets and the Hannaford Charitable Foundation has given $350,000 toward the program. Seated, from left, are Dr. Dora Anne Mills, MaineHealth; LeeAnna Lavoie, Healthy Community Coalition of Greater Franklin County; Trampas Hutches, MaineHealth; and Todd Bullen, Hannaford Supermarkets. Dr. Emily Keller, a physician at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway and a planning committee member, is partially hidden behind Glazier. Pam Harnden/Livermore Falls Advertiser The donation is part of a larger donation of more than $1.5 million spanning New York and New England, Bullen said. Food as Medicine focuses on the importance of a nutrient-rich diet, a critical component of health care, particularly for those with chronic illnesses such as diabetes or heart conditions, he noted. “At Hannaford, we believe wholesome fresh food is a critical ingredient to ensure the strength of our communities and success in the future,” Bullen added. “People ask what is Food As Medicine,” Dr. Dora Anne Mills, MaineHealth chief health improvement officer,” said. “We as physicians and patients know medicine is something we take to improve our health. What we are learning more and more is that we can also use food as a way to improve our health.” Mills spoke of her first experience eating kale and how she had to learn ways to prepare it. “It took some work with people teaching me,” she said. “I learned how to make it taste good. It improves your health, I know it is a lot healthier for me. That is the basic concept of Food As Medicine. “We are trying to make sure people have the nutritious foods that help improve their health but also the tools, the education that goes along with it and also looking at how we build community,” she said. There are two components to Food As Medicine. The first sees healthy meals delivered to people regionally who have been discharged from the hospital after heart disease issues. The second is a food pantry that will provide foods and the tools needed to know how to prepare them. The impact of the program will be evaluated, Mills said. “We believe Food As Medicine is a strategy we can learn from,” she stressed. “It is a wave of the future.” The Good Shepherd Food Bank is another partner for Food As Medicine, Mills added. Food As Medicine also looks to: • Increase access to healthy foods; • Increase knowledge and skills around lifestyles such as physical activity, mindfulness and healthy eating by providing education and hands-on cooking classes; and • Increase social connectedness in bringing people together to support each other. “Cooking Matters is a hands-on cooking class that is supported by Hannaford and Good Shepherd Food Bank,” LeeAnna Lavoie, Healthy Community Coalition of Greater Franklin County director, said. “Living Well for Better Health is a chronic disease health management class that focuses on looking at symptoms of chronic disease and action planning.” There are 10 participants enrolled, with a third session and 11 more participants launching Sept. 20, Lavoie said. “As we have heard from others, the critical links between chronic disease and nutritional food security can’t be ignored,” Dr. Emily Keller, part of the planning committee from Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, said. “To prevent increased chronic disease in the community at large we need to recognize the underlying (factors) that reside outside the hospital. That is why this program is so important, because it bridges that gap.” In the few weeks the program has been operating, some patients are already seeing benefits, Keller noted. Anne Glazier and her husband, Charles, of Rumford are participating in Wednesday afternoon and evening Food As Medicine sessions. She has health issues that require a special diet. She has had to give up garlic and onions, something she typically cooked with, which she said distressed her. The Food As Medicine program has become a family for us, Glazier said. She likes the format which includes classes, hands-on cooking and shopping. The Healthy Community Coalition food pantry is stocked with whole foods and foods fresh from the garden, she noted. “In our class we talk about shopping economically,” Glazier said. The Hannaford reward program is used by many people, she stated. “In these times it is important to have all kinds of techniques to reduce what we spend and be able to have healthy meals.” Teachers Kathy Doyon and David Scammon talked about one of the meals prepared in the hands-on classes, then shared samples with the audience. “It is good,” state Senator Russell Black of Wilton said. At the Healthy Community Coalition office, the food pantry will soon be in a new site in the Greenwood Building on the Franklin Memorial Hospital Campus. Kitchen and classroom spaces will be available there. “(Food As Medicine) has brought my husband and me closer together,” Glazier said. “He has been in the kitchen with me, it is really fun to be together, learning what we can eat together so I am not doing something separate from what he is.”

Massachusetts Looks To Crackdown On Underage Sports Betting Gaming Today
Massachusetts Looks To Crackdown On Underage Sports Betting – Gaming Today https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/massachusetts-looks-to-crackdown-on-underage-sports-betting-gaming-today/ Sportsbook brand ambassadors are hand-picked for their appeal. Sports betting advertising recommendations pending in Massachusetts would make sure they appeal to bettors of legal age. That could determine not only the face of Massachusetts sportsbooks, but where — and how often — sports betting ads run in the Bay State.  The proposed recommendations – presented to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) by its staff back in June – were shared today during an MGC roundtable discussion on responsible gaming related to sports wagering.   The strongest recommendations include the following:  Prohibit anyone who is, or appears to be, under age 21 from appearing in sports betting ads Prohibit sports betting ads from using “images or likeness, symbols, role models, and/or celebrity/entertainer endorsers whose primary appeal is to minder, themes or language designed to appeal specifically to those under the age of 21” Prohibit sports betting ads at college sports venues or via digital media “where the majority of the viewers or participants are presumed to be under the age of 21”  Prohibit sports betting ads on mobile apps, the internet, TV, radio, other electronic means, in print, or billboards unless “reliable and current” data shows that at least 85 percent of the audience is expected to be at least age 21 If approved by MGC in the coming weeks, the recommendations would beef up existing Massachusetts gaming regulations – now focused on casinos – that prohibit marketing and advertising aimed at persons under age 21 and persons on voluntary self-exclusion lists. Underage Sports Betting A Wider Issue?  Massachusetts seems eager to get ahead of underage gambling problems reportedly plaguing other states.  A July 12 Stateline article published by the Pew Trusts reports that underage sports betting is on the rise in states where sportsbooks are now legal and operational. That list of states totals 33. Massachusetts – which legalized sports betting last month – will join the list once all sports betting regulations are in place.  “Between 60% and 80% of high school students report having gambled for money in the past year, according to the National Council on Problem Gambling,” the article says. “The group says the pandemic and easy access to online gambling have heightened risks for young adults.” “The percentage of high school students with a gambling problem is double that of adults, research has found,” according to Stateline. “About 5% of all young people between 11 and 17 meet at least one of the criteria for a gambling problem, such as liking the rush felt when gambling, writing IOUs to stay in the game and wanting to win ‘the big one’ so much that they keep playing even when losing a great deal.” That’s a real concern to Marlene Warner, the executive director of the Massachusetts Council on Gaming and Health. The mother of two teenage sports fans said she is “concerned beyond belief” about the effect of sports betting advertising on children. Warner said she is already seeing sports betting ads at Fenway Park, on the internet, and elsewhere — and sports betting isn’t even operational yet in the commonwealth.  “I think we have to pay attention to the most vulnerable populations, youth being one of them,” she said. “I think the time for (MGC) to act upon this and think about bans or limitations on advertising is now, not until we have it all figured out.”  Massachusetts Regulations In Flux The recommendations, if adopted, could eventually be wrapped into sports betting regulations now being drafted for approval by the MGC. But official action could still be weeks away.  Up to 225 regulations must be approved by the MGC before sportsbooks launch in the commonwealth. Each will likely be considered individually, allowing commissioners to decide if an emergency or permanent regulation is needed – although emergency regulations take effect more quickly.  The MGC approved its first sports betting regulation last week on an emergency basis. That regulation will allow the MGC to certify companies that will laboratory test sports betting equipment, by Massachusetts state law.  No launch date has been announced for Massachusetts sports betting.

Ethereum Crypto Price Prediction 2022 Will ETH Surpass $2000? Cryptonews
Ethereum Crypto Price Prediction 2022 Will ETH Surpass $2000? Cryptonews
Ethereum Crypto Price Prediction 2022 – Will ETH Surpass $2,000? – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/ethereum-crypto-price-prediction-2022-will-eth-surpass-2000-cryptonews/ Ethereum holders have been drumming up a lot of excitement and interest as the Merge event nears. Whilst Ethereum is down 6.81% on the 24-hour time frame, ETH has still moved up 2.96% against Bitcoin.  Will Ethereum surpass the $2,000 price levels once again?  Since November 2021 Ethereum has been in a macro-downtrend and has struggled to see sustenance beyond the 20-day moving average on the weekly time frame.  Many speculate Ethereum had already hit its bottom at $882 on the 18th June, this is a total correction of 81.67% from the all-time high of $4,871 set on the Coinbase exchange on the 10th November 2021.  Resilient investors who scooped up Ethereum at $882 would still be up by 80% today even with the persisting bearish sentiment in the crypto markets.  ETH/USD – Weekly Time Frame. Just recently Ethereum lost a critical support level of $1,704 which has now been flipped into resistance. With the bears temporarily in control, there is a threat that we could see Ethereum head down to the $1,411 support range if there is negative price continuation.  If however, the Merge is a succesful price catalyst and the resistance of $1,704 is broken there is a good chance that Ethereum might rally up to $2,174 which is a resistance written in from the 23rd January 2022.  Ethereum now resides within a horizontal channel which is a consolidation pattern. The recent loss of price structure reminds me of the 7th of September where Ethereum came down to $1,490 and then rallied back up to $1,790. As we can see, there is a good chance that we might see a bullish reversal here at these lower levels which could soar the price of Ethereum back towards the $2,000 levels of the bulls can take full control. The relative-strength index also sits at 33.26 which is leaning towards oversold. This could reflect that current price levels might be good for dollar cost averaging.  Ideally, it would be very good to see Ethereum break through the resistance of the horizontal channel at $1,629 and retest the $1,704 resistance level before seeing potential continuation towards the $2,000 mark. Crypto Influencers Buy More Ethereum With the Merge only 1 day and 9 hours away more and more eyes begin to watch the price action of Ethereum.  According to Coinmarketcap Ethereum is $1,596 and has a market capital of $195 billion. Over the last 24 hours Ethereum has seen an increase of trading volume by 25.18% which is another bullish sign that a rally could potentially be on the way.  Many crypto influencers have also been Tweeting about the Ethereum Merge generating more hype and euphoria around the movement.  For example crypto analyst @MartiniGuyYT has purchased another $600,000 and it could be speculate that the motive behind buying Ethereum is the Ethereum Merge.  The performance of Ethereum is extremely volatile at the moment as tension around the Ethereum merge increases.  Historical data suggests that September is also one of the worst months for high-risk assets like cryptocurrency. On the positive side, October, November and December are usually much healthier looking and more rewarding. Ethereum Crypto Video Analysis With enough community morale and bullish momentum Ethereum should be able to reclaim the $2,000 price levels. However, we are still in a crypto winter so naturally we are going to see rejections at resistance levels. I speculate that Ethereum will chop between $1,250-2,000 for the remainder of 2022. If you wish to maximize your exposure to the Ethereum merge you could potentially look into adding Polygon to your portfolio as there is a positive correlation between their price structure.  An alternative option to Ethereum which might provide a higher return for 2022 is the Tamadoge presale.

The study will continue to enroll patients through 2022 and details of FIH can be found at ClinicalTrials.gov (Identifier: NCT05182307). The primary and key secondary endpoints of this trial include device feasibility assessments such as success of implantation at the anatomically accurate position, and hemodynamic performance assessments including effective orifice area (EOA), mean gradient, aortic regurgitation, paravalvular leak (PVL) and Doppler Velocity Index (DVI). Patient outcomes such as stroke, myocardial infarction, life-threatening bleeds, and all-cause mortality are to be reported at 30 days and 1-year post implantation. “DurAVR represents a transformational product, and we are excited to showcase its first clinical study at one of the most prestigious interventional cardiology congresses,” commented Dr. Chris Meduri, Chief Medical officer of Anteris and a practicing interventional cardiologist at the Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm. “We have previously demonstrated that all Anteris tissue (including the FDA approved product CardioCel®) made from our patented ADAPT® technology, have zero-DNA, zero-glutaraldehyde and are hence ultradurable in the long-term because they remain calcification- free in 10-year longitudinal follow-ups. This will allow DurAVR to be a true lifetime treatment for patients with AS. The FIH data produced to date now demonstrate the immediate hemodynamic benefits of Anteris’ 3D single-piece native shaped aortic valve delivering a larger EOA, excellent laminar flow, and improved exercise capacity. By combining immediate and long-term benefits, DurAVR is perfectly suited for today’s younger, more active patients,” commented Wayne Paterson, Chief Executive Officer of Anteris Technologies. THE WASHINGTON OUTDOOR REPORT Week Of September 11 Quad City Herald
THE WASHINGTON OUTDOOR REPORT Week Of September 11 – Quad City Herald https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-washington-outdoor-report-week-of-september-11-quad-city-herald/ By:  John Kruse, The Washington Outdoor Report The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has released their annual hunting prospects report, put together by regional and district game biologists. Here’s the highlights for deer and elk for the upcoming season: Deer The best place to go for white-tailed deer in Washington is Northeast Washington’s District 1, covering Ferry, Stevens and Pend Oreille Counties. Ferry County also offers good opportunities for mule deer. Last year 3544 deer were harvested in this region, which was down 18 percent from the five-year average. WDFW biologists state roadside surveys indicate deer populations are stable. The best Game Management Units to hunt for success are GMU 121 (Huckleberry) where 31 percent of deer hunters harvested an animal during the modern firearm season though this did attract an average of five hunters per square mile. GMU 101 (Sherman) was best for archery hunters. Very few hunters were in the area last year and the success rate was 23 percent. WDFW will have voluntary check stations set up at locations throughout this region during the opening weekend of hunting season and will be checking animals for the presence of chronic wasting disease. Heading to North Central Washington’s District 7, covering Chelan and Douglas counties, you’ll find what is traditionally some of the best mule deer hunting in the state. The Chelan herd of mule deer has a buck to doe ratio of 25:100 while the Douglas herd’s ration is 26:100, meeting or beating management objectives. Harvest was down last year but biologists believe that’s because hunter participation was as well. If you are looking for big numbers of mule deer, head to Okanogan County (District 6) which has the largest migratory mule deer herd in the state. Good numbers of white-tailed deer are found in GMUs 204 and 215. Fires and drought in recent years have set deer numbers back but the herds are recovering. Biologists expect a modest increase of 2 ½-year-old bucks this year and a harvest similar to last season. Last year 2,228 deer were harvested in Okanogan County, about a hundred deer above the five-year average. Archery hunters did best with a 26% success rate, followed by muzzleloaders with a 23% success rate and modern firearms hunters, of which only 18% harvested a deer. The Desert Wildlife Area and Columbia Basin in Grant and Adams Counties also offers very good mule deer hunting, albeit, carefully managed and often limited to hunters lucky enough to draw a tag. Last year 747 bucks were harvested in this area (District 6), and 156 of them were 5-point antlered bucks or better. Modern firearms hunters had the best success in the open terrain found in this region and with very healthy buck to doe ratios biologists expect good mule deer hunting again this year. Most of the bucks will likely be harvested in GMU 272 (Beezley) and GMU 284 (Ritzville). Finally heading to Klickitat, Skamania and Clark Counties, deer hunters have limited public land opportunities so permits from timber companies often dictate opportunity and success. Having said that, biologists say, “Deer harvest and success is remarkably consistent within District 9, where hunters are expected to harvest approximately 2,000 bucks during the 2022 general season, representing a success rate of 20-25 percent.” Biologists also noted, “Deer harvest in West Klickitat (GMU 578), Grayback (388), and East Klickitat (382) was higher in 2021 than in recent years, which is an indication of recovery for these populations.” Elk The Blue Mountains elk herd has been significantly declining in numbers in recent years, down to an estimated 3900 animals this year compared to a high of some 5,800 animals eight years ago. The bull to cow ratio is just under 20 bulls for 100 cows. Harsh winters in the last decade definitely had an effect on this herd but so does predation. Very few calves radio collared in a recent study survived and most of those that died were killed by cougars. Staff biologists predict, “The low number of calves being recruited into the population in 2022 will result in a low number of yearling bulls (spikes) available for harvest this fall. This fall will be another below-average year for yearling bull harvest.” The Mount Saint Helens elk herd has also struggled in recent years due to hoof rot disease as well as harsh winters and cold, late springs. Biologists say, “These indicators point toward an elk population that is below objective and well below historic highs. Therefore, hunters should expect a generally less productive elk hunting season during the 2022 hunt. WDFW has reduced antlerless hunting opportunity accordingly.” Another option is Northeast Washington, where the Selkirk elk herd resides, but WDFW biologists caution, “In general, opportunities are marginal and harvest success is very low.” The Coluckum herd, residing in Chelan and Kittitas Counties, offers a brighter note. In the Wenatchee District, GMU 251 (Mission) offers the best chance for elk hunters going after animals from the Colockum elk herd in places like Jump Off Ridge as well as the Camas and Tronsen Meadows. Of the 42 elk harvested in this district during last year’s general season, the vast majority came from here. During the general season, this is a spike bull-only harvest area. There was also a late cow elk season last year in the Peshastin area to reduce damage to orchards and this will likely happen again this year. Overall, biologists are hearing reports of increasing numbers of elk in this district and harvest rates are expected to be between 40 to 55 elk. Starbucks To Revamp Stores To Speed Service, Boost Morale – Madison.com https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/starbucks-to-revamp-stores-to-speed-service-boost-morale-madison-com/ Starbucks, Appoints New CEO. CNN reports Laxman Narasimhan will be the next CEO of Starbucks. After joining the coffee chain on Oct. 1, he will officially take over as CEO in April. He will also join the board of directors. Narasimhan most recently served as CEO of the Reckitt Benckiser Group, a multinational consumer goods company. Howard Schultz will remain interim CEO of Starbucks amid the transition. He will also stay on the board. CNN reports that on Sept. 1, Schultz shared his confidence in Narasimhan to be able to lead the company during a turbulent time. CNN reports that on Sept. 1, Schultz shared his confidence in Narasimhan to be able to lead the company during a turbulent time. He is a strategic and transformational leader with deep experience in building powerful consumer brands. He is the leader we were looking for, Howard Schultz, via statement. Mellody Hobson, independent chair of the Starbucks board, said that , Narasimhan’s “deep, hands-on experience driving strategic transformations at global consumer-facing businesses makes him the ideal choice.”. Prior to joining Reckitt Benckiser, Narasimhan was global chief commercial officer for PepsiCo Starbucks — ringing up record sales but struggling with low employee morale — plans to spend $450 million next year to make its North American stores more efficient and less complex. The company also said it plans to open 2,000 net new stores in the U.S. by 2025, with an emphasis on meeting the growing demand for new types of service, including drive-thru, mobile ordering and delivery. Drive-thru now makes up 50% of U.S. sales, for example, while delivery demand has grown by 24% so far this year. Customizable cold drinks — which now make up as many as 75% of Starbucks’ U.S. beverage orders — are also taxing employees in kitchens designed for simpler hot drinks. Starbucks debuted a new work station that requires less movement and can cut 50 seconds off the process of making a blended iced mocha. A new technology will cut the time needed to make cold brew coffee from 20 hours to a few seconds. “It’s clear that our physical stores have to change. Our physical stores were built for a different era,” said John Culver, Starbucks’ chief operating officer, at a day-long event for investors in Seattle Tuesday. Starbucks executives made little mention of a growing unionization effort at its U.S. stores during morning presentations Tuesday. But it has clearly been an impetus for the company to think more deeply about ways to improve employees’ work life. Since late last year, 236 of Starbucks’ 9,000 company-owned U.S. stores have voted to unionize, an effort the company opposes. “The reality is, we have a trust deficit with our partners,” said Frank Britt, Starbucks’ executive vice president and chief strategy officer. “The work we do in our stores today is too physically hard.” Leading the revamp will be Laxman Narasimhan, a former PepsiCo executive who was named Starbucks’ CEO last week. Narasimhan will spend the next six months shadowing interim CEO Howard Schultz, who helped shape the company after buying it in 1987 and has been leading it on a temporary basis since April. Schultz will remain on Starbucks’ board when Narasimhan assumes the CEO position in April. “It’s an incredible opportunity for me to be learning at the feet of one of the best entrepreneurs in the world,” Narasimhan said, Schultz said Starbucks notched the best sales week in its 51-year history in August when it introduced its fall drink lineup. But Schultz said Starbucks lost its way during the pandemic, when employee retention tumbled even as customers demanded new service like curbside pickup. Healthy Habits Cameron Diaz Lives By To Look And Feel Her Best At 50 — Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/healthy-habits-cameron-diaz-lives-by-to-look-and-feel-her-best-at-50-eat-this-not-that-eat-this-not-that/ We can all learn more than a thing or two from Cameron Diaz about longevity, and the reasons are strong. The celeb retired from the big screen a few years back to make spending more time embracing life a priority. But Diaz recently appeared as a guest judge on season 7 of “Drag Race All Stars,” giving some solid tips to contestants, and fans were all about it. She will also “un-retire” to star in a new action-comedy film called “Back in Action” with Jamie Foxx. The talented actress has brought us so many favorite roles we’ve loved, including “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “My Sister’s Keeper,” “There’s Something about Mary,” “Charlie’s Angels,” and lots more. But there are Some Things about Cameron Diaz you may not know about. For one, she loves to cook. She’s also dealt with issues many of us had, revealing in The Body Book, “I had terrible, terrible, skin. It was embarrassing, and I did everything I could think of to make it go away. I tried to cover it with makeup” (via Women’s Health). Diaz is also an absolute empowering role model when it comes to leading a healthy life. With just one look at her Instagram page, you can clearly see the actress, author, and mom does not look even close to 50 years of age. Keep reading to learn more about the celeb’s healthy habits. Amanda Edwards / Contributor Cameron Diaz has not skipped a single beat. She lives and breathes healthy lifestyle habits and even wrote a book about it called The Longevity Book: The Science of Aging, the Biology of Strength, and the Privilege of Time, which comes after her #1 New York Times bestseller, The Body Book. In The Longevity Book, Diaz explores both the science and art of aging and suggests solid steps to live your best, healthiest, and most resilient life as you grow older. Related: George Clooney Is Living His Best Life at 61 and These Are His Secrets Maintaining a healthy diet geared towards longevity is a priority in this star’s life and books. Diaz sticks to the Mediterranean diet, consuming protein, whole grains, fresh produce, and healthy fats (via FoodsForBetterHealth). One of her favorite staples is brown rice couscous. She stays away from processed foods, late-night eating, and sweets. Breakfast for the celeb is typically oatmeal or avocado toast, and as a side note, she enjoys seasoning her avocados with lemon and salt. It’s all about an 80/20 rule when it comes to eating, which shows us that Cameron Diaz is totally human like the rest of us. Her concept is that 80% of her diet consists of the healthy stuff. The other 20% is sheer fun and guilty pleasures, like a cheeseburger or bean burrito. She enjoys cooking, and spends weekend time preparing homemade meals for the week. Related: The Healthy Habits of Harrison Ford Make Indiana Jones Look Great at 80 Cameron Diaz gets her beauty sleep, saying in The Body Book, “We spend a good portion of our lives asleep—or trying to sleep—and the quality of that time spent sleeping determines our mood and our mental sharpness, and not just the next morning but the next years of our life” (via Women’s Health). Live with the concept that you’re not getting older—you’re getting better! Cameron Diaz practices what she preaches, and a good example is the thoughts of Dr. Becca Levy, who states in Diaz’s new book that individuals who are positive-minded and maintain optimistic views about growing older age better physically (via FoodsForBetterHealth). Diaz is pretty thought-provoking when it comes to growing older in The Body Book, saying, “A lot of us fear the idea of aging—getting older, being less mobile, having less energy, and being less of ourselves. But I look at aging like this: getting older is a blessing and a privilege, and if you lay the foundation for a healthy life in your younger years, your older years may very well be some of the best of your life. And the point I’m making is not about keeping up your youthful appearance. This is not about beauty and the aesthetics of our bodies. I want you to feel young. I want you to feel strong. I for one can say honestly that I feel better and stronger and more capable now than I did when I was twenty years old, because I’ve taken better care of myself in the last fifteen years than I did in the first twenty-six years of my life.” As if Cameron Diaz couldn’t get any cooler, she’s the co-founder/creator of organic wine brand, Avaline Wines, which she heavily promotes on her IG. Diaz is quoted saying on Avaline’s website, “The wine industry allows over 70 ingredients or additives to be added to a bottle, without disclosing any of them to the drinker. So we have quite the long list of ‘no’s.’ For Avaline, it’s pretty simple, our grapes are never treated with harsh chemical pesticides, we never use animal by-products, and we never add colors, concentrates or unnecessary sugars.” Alexa Mellardo Alexa is the Mind + Body Deputy Editor of Eat This, Not That!, overseeing the M+B channel and delivering compelling fitness, wellness, and self-care topics to readers. New York Fashion Week Enters The Metaverse With Nolcha Forbes
New York Fashion Week Enters The Metaverse With Nolcha Forbes
New York Fashion Week Enters The Metaverse With Nolcha – Forbes https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/new-york-fashion-week-enters-the-metaverse-with-nolcha-forbes/ By Christos Makridis Independent fashion designer firm Nolcha Shows is hosting a virtual-reality fashion event at the Word Trade Center for New York Fashion Week, opening the exclusive world of design to newcomers. Participants will have the opportunity to experience groundbreaking technology that incorporates fashion in the metaverse, virtual avatars, augmented reality, and digital wearables. The two-day web3 event will be held on the 69th floor of the iconic 3 World Trade Center. Unlike traditional NFT events, the goal “is to create a new destination, or highway, connecting web2 and web3 communities where they can work together,” said Arthur Mandel, co-founder of The Nolcha Shows at New York Fashion Week. Even though the fashion show is an invite-only event and there is a limit to how many people can reside within the venue, the use of web3 technologies will allow “everyone to experience fashion week – not just the select few,” said Mandel. Participants will be able to see how different clothing looks on the runway using augmented reality without having to physically change clothes, allowing for more creativity with fashion styles than traditionally possible. (Photo by Adrian Chambre) These runway shows will begin at 2pm on September 13, featuring ready-to-wear web3 native brand, and panel discussions will begin at 12pm on September 15th, allowing for opportunities to share and exchange ideas about the impact of web3 on the fashion industry. “It is about educating brands about the difference between NFTs for speculation, collectibles, and virtual spaces where people are walking around – and all the real potential for web3,” said Brian Wallace, chief marketing officer for Vatom. “It’s about creating an absolutely new direct engagement channel with their customers where they can reward and incentivize behavior on an ongoing basis.” Many brands have traditionally viewed NFTs as an interesting show-and-tell technology, but we are now at a “now what” stage. “You have peoples’ attention, now how are you going to increase brand and customer engagement,” said Wallace. The difference between the more versus less successful web3 projects are those that are responding and engaging with their customers. “We need to align the technology that we’re seeing with what people want and provide them with an entry point and access… we just need to get to a point where there is a really easy entry point for people to get involved,” said Jacqueline Blackburn at Scout Ventures. NFTs provide a new direct engagement channel to reward and incentivize consumers for specific behaviors on an ongoing basis. Marketers no longer require millions in advertising expenditures creating content that consumers do not want to see. Instead, web3 allows consumers to own their own data, which means that brands will need to win their customers over by providing value. “NFTs are not just about intellectual property and monetization or new ways of engaging with customers… everything in your wallet, ranging from loyalty points to information from your bra size to digital wearables recommended by artificial intelligence, provides opportunities to co-create, support local creators, vote on collaborations and control real-time supply chains,” said Paula Kilgarriff, a web3 fashion retail activation consultant and lecturer. getty Some of the innovation is also taking place on virtual land. For example, LandVault has built out some 100 million square feet of land in the metaverse for brands. “Metaverse is the 3D version of the internet, so as it grows in a new era for the internet, all the brands and businesses will need to figure out how the new platform works… we think of ourselves as in the business of creating experiences,” said Sam Huber, chief executive officer and founder of LandVault. Since metaverse spaces are not constrained by the same degree of physical or geographic limits, it provides an opportunity to gamify brands and build virtual experiences. “Every campaign has different objectives, which is different than web2… it’s about recreation and entertainment, not specific numbers or a single campaign,” said Huber. Because these web3 experiences tend to attract consumers who are naturally more interested in the product or service, brands have also seen much larger engagement and conversion ratios into sales – even as high as 70%. “The future store is dynamic and is a downloadable immersive interactive experience for customers/community to interact with the brand and have a say or stake in their products and services,” said Kilgarriff. The Nolcha Shows promises to not only create an exciting and engaging experience for participants – both in-person and virtually – but also pilot an innovative set of web3 use-cases that will transform the fashion industry forever.

The frontend, designed to offer a clear and intuitive interface for interacting with the test network, also “shows a filterable summary of transactions on the network,” according to Nahmii.  Nahmii noted that the current version of the code does not support the major Ethereum wallet MetaMask, by design, and is “only accessible by users with appropriate credentials,” meaning that “Transactions on the test network are therefore private.” Norges Bank officially announced its plans to conduct CBDC tests in April 2021 and indicated that it expected to find a preferred solution by trialing different designs over the next two years.  A working paper issued by the bank in November 2021 identified several possible CBDC designs, including those based on the Ethereum, Bitcoin and Bitcoin SV blockchains.  Leading financial institutions back the launch of a new digital asset exchange Russia looks to establish crypto regulations by years end The new week has brought yet another crypto-related announcement out of Russia, as Tuesday saw Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin officially order the government to come to a consensus regarding cryptocurrency regulation in the country by Dec. 19. Mishustin directly called on the Duma and other state authorities to create a coordinated policy on regulating the issuance and circulation of digital currencies within the country and to finalize regulations for crypto mining and cross-border transactions in digital currencies.  Importantly, the prime minister emphasized that the regulations need to be aligned with the Bank of Russia, the Russian Finance Ministry, Anti-Money Laundering authority Rosfinmonitoring, the Federal Tax Service and the Federal Security Service. This is the latest significant crypto-related development to come out of Russia and follows last week’s revelation that the Bank of Russia agreed with the finance ministry to legalize cryptocurrency for cross-border payments.  Russia’s Finance Ministry also recently revealed that it has begun working with governments of “friendly” nations to create a cross-border stablecoin-based payment platform. Russia Spent Millions In Secret Global Political Campaign U.S. Official Says The Washington Post
Russia Spent Millions In Secret Global Political Campaign, U.S. Official Says – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/russia-spent-millions-in-secret-global-political-campaign-u-s-official-says-the-washington-post/ Russia has secretly funneled at least $300 million to foreign political parties and candidates in more than two dozen countries since 2014 in an attempt to shape political events beyond its borders, according to a new U.S. intelligence review. Moscow planned to spend hundreds of millions of dollars more as part of its covert campaign to weaken democratic systems and promote global political forces seen as aligned with Kremlin interests, according to the review, which the Biden administration commissioned this summer. A senior U.S. official, who spoke to reporters Tuesday on the condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence findings, said the administration decided to declassify some of the review’s findings in an attempt to counter Russia’s ability to sway political systems in countries in Europe, Africa and elsewhere. “By shining this light on Russian covert political financing and Russian attempts to undermine democratic processes, we’re putting these foreign parties and candidates on notice that if they accept Russian money secretly we can and we will expose it,” the official said. The senior official pointed to one Asian country they declined to name where the Russian ambassador allegedly gave millions of dollars in cash to a presidential candidate. Officials said that Kremlin-linked forces have also used shell companies, think tanks and other means to influence political events, sometimes to the benefit of far-right groups. A State Department démarche Monday to U.S. embassies in more than 100 countries described the alleged Russian activities and suggested steps the United States can take to push back, including sanctions and travel bans. The cable, which officials provided to reporters, named Russian oligarchs it said were involved in what it described as “financing schemes,” including Yevgeniy Prigozhin and Aleksandr Babakov. Prigozhin, who is wanted by the FBI, was charged by U.S. officials in 2018 with attempting to interfere in the 2016 U.S. elections. This is a developing story that will be updated. War in Ukraine: What you need to know The latest: Grain shipments from Ukraine are gathering pace under the agreement hammered out by Ukraine, Russia, Turkey and the United Nations in July. Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian Black Sea ports had sent food prices soaring and raised fears of more hunger in the Middle East and Africa. At least 18 ships, including loads of wheat, corn and sunflower oil, have departed. The fight: The conflict on the ground grinds on as Russia uses its advantage in heavy artillery to pummel Ukrainian forces, which have sometimes been able to put up stiff resistance. In the south, Ukrainian hopes rest on liberating the Russia-occupied Kherson region, and ultimately Crimea, seized by Russia in 2014. Fears of a disaster at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station remain as both sides accuse each other of shelling it. The weapons: Western supplies of weapons are helping Ukraine slow Russian advances. U.S.-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) allow Ukrainian forces to strike farther behind Russian lines against Russian artillery. Russia has used an array of weapons against Ukraine, some of which have drawn the attention and concern of analysts. Photos: Washington Post photographers have been on the ground from the very beginning of the war — here’s some of their most powerful work. How you can help: Here are ways those in the U.S. can help support the Ukrainian people as well as what people around the world have been donating. Head Of Google Gaming Looks At Esports Potential With UH Mānoa | University Of Hawaiʻi System News – University Of Hawaii https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/head-of-google-gaming-looks-at-esports-potential-with-uh-manoa-university-of-hawai%ca%bbi-system-news-university-of-hawaii/ September 13, 2022 UH News Moonlit Beshimov speaks with members of UH Mānoa’s esports team. The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s esports program welcomed the head of Google’s gaming strategy and initiatives, Moonlit Beshimov, to the campus in September. Esports program leader Nyle Sky Kauweloa gave Beshimov and her husband tech executive Ilias Beshimov, a tour of the iLab facility and hosted an informal talk story session with members of the esports team. The students learned about the current trends in the industry. This visit came after UH Mānoa became the first higher education institution to host the Overwatch League in 2021 and 2022, providing more opportunities for students to learn about the growing global esports industry. “For her to see what is happening here, she was quite impressed number one,” Kauweloa said. “This whole idea of college esports is very new to them and so I can tell that they have a lot of ideas of what could happen and the potential of our program here. It’s really brought more of a spotlight to UH esports, to our iLab, and to our students and our teams overall. I hope to work with her more in the future because they see potential here for Google.” More on the esports program Global esports revenue is projected to reach $1.38 billion in 2022, up from $1.08 billion in 2021. Not only has Kauweloa helped the esports team become one of the top programs in the nation, he has also spearheaded the academic side. UH Mānoa now offers an internship credit course for students who volunteered during the Overwatch League tournaments, and a three-course esports series in the College of Social Sciences. “What really struck me to be very impressive is turning esports as the entryway to introduce students to the whole business of gaming,” Moonlit Beshimov said. “Gaming is such a big market, it’s a huge business. It’s bigger than both the movie and music industries combined. Most people think of gaming as not something you do for a living. …It’s a leading industry for technology. It’s a huge market, with a lot of innovation coming out of it. That angle is incredible besides the actual achievement of being a ranked esports team in the nation.” Vote for UH Mānoa esports The UH Mānoa esports program is up for the best collegiate esports program of the year award for the second consecutive year, and Kauweloa has been nominated for the collegiate esports ambassador of the year award. The public can vote for the team and Kauweloa on the Esports Awards website until November 30. Visit the UH esports team’s Twitter and Discord pages. More stories on UH’s esports program. Let’s Grow Kids Action Network Endorses Candidates In Vermont – Vermont Biz https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/lets-grow-kids-action-network-endorses-candidates-in-vermont-vermont-biz/ Slate includes 131 childcare champions running to serve in federal and statewide offices, as well as the state Legislature Vermont Business Magazine Today, Let’s Grow Kids Action Network announced its first-ever slate of endorsed childcare candidates for the general election in Vermont. The 131 candidates endorsed today have demonstrated they are committed to putting Vermont’s economy on a sustainable path by taking action to transform Vermont’s childcare system in 2023. Let’s Grow Kids Action Network is a 501(c)(4) advocacy organization focused on passing laws that fund and sustain a high-quality, affordable childcare system. Topping Let’s Grow Kids Action Network’s list of endorsed candidates are Congressman Peter Welch, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, Becca Balint, the Democratic nominee for U.S. House of Representatives and Governor Phil Scott, the Republican nominee for Governor. Today’s slate of endorsements includes other statewide offices, as well as 123 candidates running to serve in the Vermont House and Senate, representing all major parties – Democrats, Progressives and Republicans, as well as independents (see full list of candidates by office/county/district below). “Today marks an extraordinary moment not only in Vermont’s Child Care Campaign, but in the history of our state. For the first time, Vermonters have a coalition of endorsed childcare candidates who are committed to transforming our state’s broken childcare system,” said Aly Richards, President, Let’s Grow Kids Action Network board of directors. “This powerful slate demonstrates that candidates in every corner of Vermont understand that childcare is essential and are ready to work together to build a system that meets the needs of all children, families, early childhood educators, and employers, while supporting a stable workforce and a resilient economy.” During the 2022 endorsement process, Let’s Grow Kids Action Network invited all Vermont candidates for federal, statewide, and legislative offices the opportunity to complete a brief questionnaire, reviewed incumbent voting records, and, in some cases, conducted individual interviews with Let’s Grow Kids Action Network staff to assess their views and priorities related to childcare. The endorsed candidates below have demonstrated that they are committed to taking action to transform Vermont’s childcare system to ensure: High-quality childcare is equitably accessible to all families when and where they need it; No family spends more than 10% of their income on childcare; and Early childhood educators are fairly compensated and supported. In the lead up to the election on Tuesday, November 8, childcare advocates, supporters, and volunteers – all part of the coalition of more than 35,000 Vermonters looking for childcare change across the state – will be elevating childcare as a top priority for Vermonters and supporting these endorsed candidates. “Between now and Election Day, it’s critical that we all work together to support these childcare candidates who understand what’s at stake and, once elected, are ready to prioritize Vermont’s youngest children, their families, and our economic future,” said Richards. As a further indication of the childcare coalition’s strength and resolve, Let’s Grow Kids Action Network notes that numerous community members have generously contributed to the Vote Child Care Fund, a political action committee registered with the Vermont Secretary of State that will enable focused support to the campaigns of endorsed childcare candidates. Effect Of Climate Change On Recreational Travel And Outdoor Activities PR Web
Effect Of Climate Change On Recreational Travel And Outdoor Activities PR Web
Effect Of Climate Change On Recreational Travel And Outdoor Activities – PR Web https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/effect-of-climate-change-on-recreational-travel-and-outdoor-activities-pr-web/ Most people enjoy recreational activities during summer, it is essential to protect yourself and your loved ones when exposed to the sun, always wear sun protective swimwear when on the beach or engaging in outdoor activities. SHERIDAN, Wy. (PRWEB) September 13, 2022 It’s no secret that climate change is real, and its effects are being felt worldwide. One of the most visible manifestations is the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, such as heat waves, droughts, and hurricanes. Research suggests that the number of such events has doubled since 1980. This has led many people to reconsider their travel plans, opting instead for shorter stays closer to home or in destinations that are perceived to be safer. The Force of Nature In addition to extreme weather events, climate change’s consequences are natural disasters such as floods and wildfires. These, too, have been on the rise in recent years, with devastating consequences for local communities and holidaymakers alike. In 2018 much of Europe was affected by prolonged periods of heavy rain, which led to widespread flooding. This not only caused damage to infrastructure but also discouraged many people from traveling. Similarly, an increase in wildfires has significantly impacted recreational travel in North America. In 2017, for example, significant wildfires swept through California, evacuating over 20,000 people and destroying thousands of homes and businesses. This significantly impacted tourism in the state, with many travelers canceling or postponing their trips out of safety concerns. What Can be Done Reduce the Impact of Climate Change While Traveling? One way is to choose environmentally friendly transportation options whenever possible. This includes walking, biking, and taking public transit instead of driving or flying. Travelers can also offset their carbon emissions by staying in eco-friendly accommodations and eating locally sourced food. When traveling, it is also essential to be respectful of local cultures and ecosystems. This means not littering and avoiding activities that could damage fragile environments. By taking these steps, travelers can help minimize their impact on the planet and play a role in combating climate change. What Travelers Can Do if Extreme Weather Conditions Disrupt Their Vacation? Most people look forward to their vacations as a time to relax and enjoy themselves. However, extreme weather conditions can sometimes disrupt even the best-laid plans. Travelers stuck in a location due to a hurricane, tornado, or another severe weather event, can do a few things to make the best of the situation. First, they should stay informed about the latest weather conditions and advisories from local authorities. This will help them plan for changing conditions and ensure they are aware of evacuation orders. Second, they should stock up on essential supplies, such as food, water, and first aid supplies. Staying in accommodations in a safe location with access to basic amenities would also ensure tourists are better prepared should the worst happen. Staying Safe During Recreational Activities As the effects of climate change continue to be felt around the world, we will likely see even more changes in recreational travel patterns in the years to come. With extreme weather events becoming more common and natural disasters on the rise, holidaymakers will likely continue to opt for shorter stays close to home or in destinations that are perceived to be safer or experience less severe weather conditions. Most people enjoy recreational activities during summer, it is essential to protect yourself and your loved ones when exposed to the sun, always wear sun protective swimwear when on the beach, such as Full Body UV Swimsuits, Stinger suits, Sunsuits and Dive Skins, these are light weight swim bodysuits that protect against the sun UVA and UVB radiation, also protect against Jellyfish stingers, sea lice and sandflies.
