And for beauty, brands and experts were joined in their excitement for the plethora of opportunities in terms of consumer engagement, community building and creative empowerment​. But whilst promise was evident, everyone still agreed the space remained nascent. The next generation of computing platform​ Ian Edwards, global connection planning director at Meta, said new computing platforms tended to arrive every 15 years or so, with the last “fundamentally new platform”​ being the arrival of the iPhone in 2007. The metaverse, Edwards said, would likely be next. “While 2022 is not the year of the metaverse, as 2007 was not the year of the phone, we believe it is the start of the beginning,”​ Edwards told attendees at Meta’s House of Instagram​ event during British Beauty Week. “…2022 is the beginning of the change, not the change itself, and that is really, really important context. Change will come, hopefully we can agree on that, but what will it be like? And why will it lead to the metaverse?” ​ Because, he said, the metaverse solved the problems of its predecessors – critical for any new technology to scale and replace what went before. Live connections and digital identities ​ Grace Kao, head of global business marketing for Instagram, said the metaverse, once fully established, would offer users fresh ways to experience live digital connections using Virtual Reality (VR) tech, stretching way beyond current video calling and instant messaging services. “Anyone with experience in VR will know you feel so much more present, being able to dive into virtual spaces. I actually think this is really interesting for the communities on Instagram (…) You’ll be able to hang out with anyone, anywhere, and feel like we are present,” ​Kao said during the event. And this evolution, she said, would also transform how users experienced live events. “On Instagram, we’re making live streaming more social, where people can comment and interact. But in the future, we will increasingly be able to feel like we are physically in a live space; where the event is happening, with other people all at different locations.”​ Beyond this, Kao said the metaverse would offer richer storytelling potential and therefore more promise for creating digital identities, amongst individual users but also brands. “A really important bridge will be around identity, and this will be a really important part of the metaverse. This is clearly an important area for the individual and it’s also a big opportunity for brands,” ​she said. ​ “As I’m sure you all know, avatars are the way we represent ourselves in the metaverse and this is an area where we are investing a lot of time and resources – to increase the options (…) How you show up is really important and we’re opening up opportunities for brands to be a part of this space.”​ The rise of digital collectibles like NFTs [non-fungible tokens] would also build out potential for richer identities in the metaverse, she said – another area Instagram and Meta were focusing on closely. Immersive experiences and experiential marketing​ Overarching connection and identity was the concept of experience – an area that would soon become more immersive with the evolution of the metaverse, according to Edwards. And this space that had already seen widespread innovation from major businesses and brands worldwide, he said. Balenciaga, for example, had presented its Autumn collections via VR – showcasing its latest pieces in a dystopian digital world and bringing a “really immersive experience to their audience”,​ he said. What Balenciaga had done here was “just the start”​ of how the metaverse could “transform experiential marketing” ​on a significant scale with greatly reduced costs, he said. Many other brands had also already started working with Augmented Reality (AR) to add a “level of depth” ​to campaigns, Edwards said, which helped move some hard metrics like consideration and conversion. More work with AR experiences might also lead to product innovation, he said, as brands worked harder on how to “show up”​ in the digital world. “…I think this is just the start and there are many things in this space that are yet to come, and for us yet to imagine.”​ A ‘process of exploration’ for brands​ So, how far off was this world of immersive experiences and digital community? Likely over a decade, according to the Meta executive. “We are clearly still a long way off, perhaps 10-15 years, from this being fully realised,” ​Edwards said. “Today, there are many new and exciting opportunities for brands to connect with their customers, and some of these that exist today will become the building blocks for the metaverse.”​ This year and beyond, he said, was simply the start of the movement towards a fully-functioning and connected metaverse; it would just need “time to scale”.​ In the meantime, he said there was plenty to get involved with and explore already. “Brands need to start working with more immersive technologies like AR; work with brands in this space to get a deeper, richer understanding of what is possible. And from this process of exploration, start to imagine what the metaverse could mean for your business and all of these incredibly exciting and interesting opportunities,”​ he said.

OWF’s goal is to increase “interoperability for a wide range of wallet use cases” and to develop a “secure, multi-purpose open source engine” that anyone can use to build a wallet. Linux Launches Openwallet Foundation to Support Development of Open-Source Crypto Wallets The Linux Foundation (LF) has supported open-source software since the foundation’s inception 22 years ago. The foundation is made up of software developers from all around the world, and corporate giants like AT&T, Cisco, Fujitsu, Google, Hitachi, Tencent, Vmware, Huawei, IBM, Intel, Meta, Microsoft, NEC, Oracle, Orange S.A., Qualcomm, and Samsung are also LF members. The announcement published on September 13 notes that the LF’s mission is to bolster universal digital wallet infrastructure. “We are convinced that digital wallets will play a critical role for digital societies. Open software is the key to interoperability and security,” Jim Zemllin, the LF executive director, said in a statement. OWF to Host a Keynote Presentation at the Open-Source Summit Europe, Foundation Is in the Midst of Constructing Group’s Governance and Structure On Tuesday, OWF will host a keynote presentation at the Open Source Summit Europe. The newly formed group has no intentions of publishing a wallet or creating new standards. “The community will focus on building an open source software engine that other organizations and companies can leverage to develop their own digital wallets,” the LF announcement details. “The wallets will support a wide variety of use cases from identity to payments to digital keys and aim to achieve feature parity with the best available wallets.” David Treat, the Global Metaverse Continuum Business Group and Blockchain lead at Accenture said that a massive change is coming to the traditional business model and digital businesses will earn trust. “Universal digital wallet infrastructure will create the ability to carry tokenized identity, money, and objects from place to place in the digital world,” Treat said. Robert Telles stood in shackles in a Las Vegas courtroom as his lawyer requested the delay. Prosecutors did not oppose the request. The judge reset the hearing for Sept. 20. Outside of court, defense attorney Travis Shetler said he wanted more time to prepare. Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson noted that Telles would remain jailed without bail. Telles, whose forearms were bandaged beneath his handcuffs, had been scheduled to be formally charged with murder in the Sept. 2 killing of 69-year-old Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German. Telles did not speak during the brief court appearance. In a criminal complaint filed Monday, prosecutors accuse Telles of “lying in wait” for German, who was stabbed seven times. His body was found the next morning. Telles, 45, the Clark County public administrator and a Democrat, was arrested Sept. 7 after police issued a plea for public help to identify a person seen on security video wearing an orange work shirt and a wide-brim straw hat toting a shoulder bag and walking toward German’s home. Police also released images of a distinctive SUV seen on video near German’s home, driven by a person wearing an orange shirt. A Review-Journal photographer snapped photos Sept. 6 of Telles washing the same type of vehicle in his driveway. A prosecutor told a judge last Thursday that Telles left his own cellphone at home and waited in a vehicle outside German’s home until the attack. It was characterized as a planned response to articles that German wrote about “turmoil and internal dissension” in the county office that handles the property of people who die without a will or family contacts. After articles appeared in May airing claims of administrative bullying, favoritism and Telles’ relationship with a subordinate staffer, Telles lost his bid for reelection in the June primary. County lawmakers also appointed a consultant to address complaints about leadership in the office. Telles blamed “old-timers” for exaggerating his relationship with a female staffer and falsely claiming that he mistreated them. German, a 40-year veteran Las Vegas journalist who was widely respected for his tenacity, was working on follow-up reports about Telles and the public administrator’s office when he died, his colleagues said. “The published articles regarding a public figure, the public administrator’s office, ruined (Telles’) political career, likely his marriage, and this was him lashing out at the cause,” Chief Deputy Clark County District Attorney Richard Scow told a judge last week. That judge, Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Elana Lee Graham, called the police report detailing the attack “chilling.” She spoke of apparent defensive wounds on German’s arms and said DNA believed to be from Telles was found under German’s fingernails. “He was fighting for his life,” Graham said. Wolfson has called German’s death “brutal and meaningless” and said a decision whether to seek the death penalty will be made in the coming months. Police said a search warrant turned up items at Telles’ home including blood-stained shoes and a straw hat that had been cut up. Authorities said they did not immediately find the weapon used to kill German. Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo, a Republican running for governor in November, said investigators were attempting to enhance security video that he described as “distorted” but that might show the attack. German joined the Review-Journal in 2010 after more than two decades at the Las Vegas Sun, where he was a columnist and reporter covering courts, politics, labor, government and organized crime. López Obrador, for his part, explained his plan to make the northern border state of Sonora a leader in lithium, electric vehicle and solar energy production, Mexico Foreign Affairs Secretary Marcelo Ebrard said. Lithium is a key component of batteries for electric vehicles. The president said last month he had already discussed the idea with U.S. President Joe Biden. Blinken said another piece of new U.S. legislation aims to incentivize the shift to electric vehicles and the production of the batteries they need in North America. Ebrard said it was a big opening for Mexico’s economy. “This means more jobs for Mexico, more integration,” Ebrard said. “We think Mexico could grow twice as much with what was proposed to Mexico today and this means we can reduce poverty even faster in our country and that the infrastructure of Mexico can grow faster.” The dialogue, which was launched by then-Vice President Biden in 2013, resumed last year in Washington after stopping during the Trump administration. The global shortage of semiconductors has slashed into production of autos, household appliances and other goods, fueling high inflation. Biden appeared at the future site of a massive Intel plant in Ohio on Friday. Last month, López Obrador said the government had created the state-run lithium company that would be in charge of the exploration and extraction of the mineral. Mexico nationalized lithium production in May. Asked about ongoing trade disputes between the U.S. and Mexico in the energy sector, officials from both countries downplayed the disputes and emphasized that there was a separate process for resolving those disagreements under their trade accord and that it was not an agenda item for these meetings. Ahead of the talks, Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian Nichols, who is also attending, said one of the priorities for the talks was promoting development in southern Mexico and Central America. U.S. border agents’ encounters with migrants from the Northern Triangle countries — El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala — have been running lower this year than last, despite overall encounters at the border being up this year, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data. Encounters with Mexican migrants have also been higher for most of the past year. Mexico has more recently avoided direct clashes with migrants moving across its territory, instead regularly offering them temporary documents to relieve pressure at its southern border. López Obrador has come under fire from some international and domestic organizations for transferring the recently created National Guard to the Defense Ministry. In many ways, the military already ran the force — and filled its ranks — but it had been created as a civilian force. López Obrador criticized the U.N. and the Organization of American States for expressing their concern over the move. Mexico continues to struggle with high rates of violence. On Friday, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons said at that violence related to Mexico’s drug cartels was the main force causing internal displacements. She called on the government to create an official registry of the displaced, but said data collected from non-governmental organizations suggested there are some 400,000. The talks come just days before Mexico celebrates its independence day, to which López Obrador has invited figures such as the daughter of revolutionary leader Ernesto “Che” Guevara and the father of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. Many longitudinal cohort studies were initiated in the latter half of the last century to better understand aging trajectories and factors that influence health and longevity. These cohorts, from all life stages and across generations, have informed knowledge about origins of diseases including risk for and protection from poor health later in life. The remarkable expansion of biomedical science has brought detailed and ever-increasing genotyping and biological phenotyping to cohort studies, and many cohorts have incorporated such approaches, increasing the breadth of data gathered on individuals. Cohort studies’ findings are of particular value because they can be interpreted in the context of their original population sampling. Care has often been taken with many of these cohorts that their sampling represents known populations. Alongside these developments, improved biostatistical methods have driven recognition that very large numbers of participants are required to detect very small but potentially important biological pathways. Methods such as pattern detection, machine learning and ever-evolving computational tools are developed to ‘mine’ datasets. The creation of huge cohorts focused on mid-life and mainly based on large size emerged as a highly attractive new investment for researchers, funders, politicians and nations. We refer to these projects as LSVD. These involve recruiting research volunteers in numbers of hundreds of thousands to millions. Many LSVD have sprung up across the world this millennium, most particularly in high-income countries, including in the UK (UK Biobank), the US (All of US), Canada (CanPath), Germany (NAKO), Japan (Biobank Japan), Taiwan (Taiwan Biobank) and Finland (FinnGEN), among others1. Together with the usual extensive data collected from participating individuals by questionnaires, LSVD incorporate technologies to collect data in varied modalities, including multiple forms of omics and imaging. Many are linked to administrative records such as hospital admissions and primary care and social care records and are geocoded to contextual environmental data such as indices of air quality or socioeconomic deprivation. One of the most well known of these national investments is the UK Biobank (https://www.ukbiobank.ac.uk/), with half a million participants, 40–70 years old at baseline, supported by a £200 million investment. It is described on its website as a ‘large-scale biomedical database and research resource, containing in-depth genetic and health information’, ‘a major contributor to the advancement of modern medicine and treatment’ and ‘a powerful resource for public health’ (19 June 2022). In this Perspective, we describe observations arising from discussions with colleagues and trainees, from trends in journals and media and from our experience as peer reviewers noting the exponential growth of LSVD publications. The promise of investments in LSVD is that they will provide definitive answers on the relationship of biological and sociodemographic factors with individual health outcomes that can then improve biomedical understanding and public health. As such, LSVD have attracted intense political, commercial, societal and scientific interest, leading to public investment on a scale approaching that for initiatives in defense, space exploration or atomic physics. Across countries, this LSVD approach has already reached several hundred million dollars collectively and is set to exceed billions in the future. Will LSVD yield findings that transform our understanding of disease processes and disease genesis? Many argue that they will and already have. But given that the pool of research funding is finite, others informally express concern that LSVD will, like a cuckoo in the epidemiological nest, consume an ever-increasing proportion of the health research monies that even high-income countries set aside. LSVD are set to be high-priced monocultures redolent of agribusiness, in which the same data soil is tilled by multiple harvesters, producing the crop of publications. There is an expressed concern that this monoculture creates an environment in which the diversity of our research approaches is being reduced (Fig. 1). Fig. 1: The potential creation of research monocultures. Will monocultures of data sources from a few gigantic fields of LSVD increasingly dominate the landscape of research? We believe that now is a good time to step back with a reflection on the contribution of LSVD to the kind of knowledge generation required for the health challenges faced by global aging societies. In this Perspective, we lay out our areas of concern, and we call on funders and the research community to initiate a more systematic, independent review that would inform future decision making regarding LSVD investments. As experienced investigators who direct multi-decade and cross-generation smaller-scale cohorts and who have also published with LSVD and nationwide administrative linkage data, we will discuss our impressions of the limitations of LSVD and consider learnings and implications for future research, including the need for adequate scientific reporting, the distribution of investments, future costs, societal and environmental impacts and relevance in the context of health inequalities and sustainability. This is not a formal review; instead, we draw on examples when possible to illustrate specific comments. A glossary of technical terms can be found in Box 1. Box 1 Glossary Attrition: attrition rates are values that indicate the rate of participant dropout in longitudinal studies. Cohort study: a form of longitudinal study used in medicine and social science beginning with a group of individuals with a common defining characteristic, for example, a birth year. Cohort effect: variations in characteristics among individuals who are defined by some shared temporal experience or common life experience or exposure, such as year of birth or exposure to leaded fuel. Collider bias: if two unrelated characteristics both influence a third, such as the recruitment in a study, this can create the spurious appearance of associations. Diagnostic criteria: set of agreed symptoms, signs and investigation results that make up a clinical diagnosis, defined and usually agreed upon by consensus among leading international experts. Effect size: number measuring the strength of the relationship between two variables in a population or population sample. Exposure: a variable with causal effect to be estimated including environmental and contextual factors, such as lived environments, medical conditions, treatments and genetics. Examples of exposures assessed by epidemiological studies are environmental and lifestyle factors, socioeconomic and working conditions, medical treatments and genetic traits. Exposures may be harmful, beneficial or a combination of both. External validity: the validity of applying the conclusions of a scientific study outside the context of that study. Large-scale volunteer database: databases made up of health information provided by hundreds of thousands of volunteers. Omics: characterization and quantification of multiple biological measures that relate to structure, function and dynamics of an organism or organisms. Healthy volunteer bias: volunteers for research have lower rates of disease and mortality than non-volunteers, a difference that can bias external validity of findings. High-education bias: volunteers for research tend to have higher levels of educational attainment than non-volunteers. Heritability: a measure of the genetic contribution to a phenotype in the population studied. Incidence: the proportion of an at-risk population developing a given condition during a specified time period or aggregated person-years of observation. Phenotype: an individual’s observable states and traits, a combination in any given individual of genetic and environmental influences from pre-conception to end of life. Prevalence: the proportion of a population with a defined condition or state at a specific time. Provenance: ‘The fact of coming from some particular source or quarter; origin, derivation’ (ref. 55). Reverse causation: X and Y are associated but not in the way assumed because instead of X causing a change in Y, it is really the other way around: Y causes changes in X. Survivor bias: survival bias is a type of sampling error or selection bias that occurs when individuals recruited for a study are those who lived past a certain age while those who died are ignored. LVSD are not representative of the general population An important part of the value of epidemiological studies depends on how closely their findings apply to the general population and therefore on how representative of that population their sample is. Compared to the general population, there are many reports from LSVD about how their participants differ2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11. Participants tend to be older, female, less urban, better educated, taller and white, have higher incomes, live in socioeconomically well-off areas, consult their doctors less often and require fewer medications. In other words, LSVD participants have less adversity and disadvantage across their life courses and therefore cannot be assumed to represent the general population and the diversity within populations. Regulation news The UAE’s Abu Dhabi Global Market free economic zone (ADGM)’s regulator – the Financial Services Regulatory Authority – has outlined its regulatory policy for crypto-related businesses who are planning to launch crypto-related services in the zone. The regulator published a set of “Guiding Principles” that underline the ADGM’s commitment to comply with global anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism protocols. The body also remarked that it will ensure that firms in the zone abide by international sanctions. CBDCs news The Linux Foundation-founded Hyperledger Foundation – a collective of blockchain development initiatives – says that the central banks of France and Nigeria have become its newest members. In an official announcement, the foundation claimed that the Banque de France and the Central Bank of Nigeria had joined its fold. The French central bank has previously worked with both Hyperledger and IBM (a major Hyperledger backer) on its own trials for a wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC). Law enforcement news Japanese police are set to be given new powers to seize cryptoassets – after the policy-making Legislative Council green-lighted proposals from the Ministry of Justice. The justice minister, Yasuhiro Harashi, wants to revise the existing Act on Punishment of Organized Crime to allow officers and bailiffs to confiscate of cryptoassets “obtained as criminal proceeds,” Nikkei reported. Taiwanese police say they have busted a lucrative crypto fraud group, the Epoch Times reported. The gang, police claimed, made use of chat apps like Line, where they claimed to be “investment teachers” who would invest their clients’ funds in crypto for a small fee. However, they appear to have “guided” their “clients” to bogus exchanges that the latter then could not withdraw funds from. Bags of narcotics, bundles of cash, and “six imported luxury cars” were seized from the suspects. Adoption news The Augusto Motta University Centre (UNISUAM), a college based in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro, will launch a post-graduate crypto course – with modules in blockchain, Web3, and the metaverse, Diario do Rio reported. The two-day event begins at 6 p.m. Friday on the Greensburg Square where the main stage will feature local vocalist Heley Trenkamp singing the National Anthem. Those persons traveling in the downtown area should be aware that Washington, Franklin and Broadway streets on the Square will be blocked off from mid-day Friday, September 16, until Sunday, September 18. Participating this year are more than 100 not-for-profit groups with tents and events scheduled all over the courthouse lawn and on Broadway Street. After the National Anthem, the Pledge of Allegiance will be led by the candidates vying for the Little Miss and Mr. Fall Festival 2022 crowns. The crowning of the newly elected Jr. Miss and Miss Tree City will follow as vendor booths across the Square start opening. At 6:45 p.m. Friday, the Rusty Bladen Band will perform on the main stage. This local favorite has played more than 4,000 shows and almost as many festivals, and will be bringing their own flavor of rock and roll to the festival. With his band, singer/songwriter Bladen has recorded four studio albums, four live albums and a Christmas album. Ashley Probst I rented a camper van in Hawaii for $119 a night. It wasn’t worth it, and it didn’t save me money. I had issues driving and staying in the van and finding legal spots to park it overnight. I wouldn’t stay in a camper van on a Hawaiian island or in an overcrowded community again. Waking up on the beach in Hawaii may sound like a dreamy respite, but my recent stay in a camper van on Oahu was the opposite. I rented a camper van in Hawaii and regretted it. Ashley Probst During a recent trip to Oahu, I decided to try renting a camper van through Airbnb instead of booking a hotel and renting a car. Though I was born and raised in Hawaii, I’d never tried this before. Ultimately, despite the van’s overwhelmingly positive reviews, my trip was far from what I’d imagined. Here’s what my experience was like and why I would not do this again. Renting a van includes the risk of last-minute changes. My hosts messaged me the night before my reservation about a major change to our pickup arrangements. Ashley Probst Stays in mobile dwellings may be subject to changes that you wouldn’t face when staying in permanent structures like hotels. The van I rented needed last-minute repairs, and I was informed the night before my reservation that I’d need to collect it an hour away from the original check-in location. Fortunately, the new pickup spot was close to where I was camping, but this could have majorly inconvenienced me. Finding legal places to park overnight was a challenge. Amenities on the Malaekahana Beach Campground property. Ashley Probst After booking the camper van, I started searching for places to park overnight. This was more challenging than I’d expected. First, I looked into RV parks and campgrounds on the North Shore and the southeast side of Oahu. An RV park would have been an ideal space for the van, but they all required a three-day camping permit. Since I planned to stay for only two nights, each in a different part of the island, this didn’t seem like the best option for me. Most of the campgrounds were fully booked, but they didn’t offer vehicle camping anyway. The only place I found that allowed vehicle camping and had a campsite available was Malaekahana Beach Campground, so I booked one night there for $8.37 with my kamaʻāina (Hawaii resident) discount. For my second night, I secured a parking space at Sun Farm Hawaii via Hipcamp for $59. There was no user manual with the van, so I had to inquire about a lot of things. Since there were no instructions in the Airbnb listing, I expected there to be a user manual in a conspicuous place, like this tray. Ashley Probst After I picked up the van, I realized there was no user manual anywhere in the vehicle or on its Airbnb profile. I had to keep messaging my hosts to ask about countless things, including potential maintenance issues and how to work certain aspects of the rig. With a rental, you’re on your own for any cleanliness issues. Some of the pillows and towels supplied in the van looked dirty. Ashley Probst Unfortunately, with rentals, you don’t always know what you’re going to get. In my opinion, the van I rented could’ve used a proper cleaning before the keys were given to me. I certainly was not anticipating a five-star-resort experience, but I was disappointed that basic cleaning protocols didn’t seem to have been followed. The pillows and towels looked dirty, trash was in the van’s nooks and crannies, and the cooler reeked of fish. Unlike at a hotel, I couldn’t request a new room or fresh towels. I was on my own. Maintenance issues can be high stakes when your mode of transportation is also your temporary home. The parking-brake light was stuck on. Ashley Probst There are various risks unique to renting a van, including the risk of maintenance issues. If something happened to the vehicle, my trip would be derailed because I’d be out of a place to sleep and a way to get around. I’m grateful that nothing catastrophic happened, but even small things worried me throughout my trip. For example, dim headlights made it difficult to drive at night, and the brake lights were stuck on, so I didn’t feel safe driving until my hosts confirmed it wasn’t an issue. Maneuvering the van was nerve-racking. I didn’t like driving over this bridge in Haleiwa because it felt too tight for such a wide vehicle. Ashley Probst I’ve driven a van before; I’d traveled in a 2022 Mercedes-Benz Storyteller Overland Beast Mode 4×4 a few months before this trip. But being behind the wheel of this van felt different because it was much older and lacked state-of-the-art technology. Even just driving 10 minutes up the road after picking up the van felt uncomfortable. At some points I rerouted because I was nervous the camper van wouldn’t fit on narrow roads or bridges. Parking such a big rig was challenging, especially when technology failed me. The backup camera stopped working when I tried to park the van for the first time. Ashley Probst After the van’s backup camera stopped working during my trip, I was extra nervous. Without it, it was virtually impossible to see out the back of the van, which made reversing hazardous. Without the camera or parking sensors, I knew the likelihood of hitting one of the surrounding vehicles was high if another human wasn’t guiding me. At one point I had someone stand nearby and yell directions to help me pull out of a crowded parking lot. After that, I sought out lots with angled stalls, spots that I could pull straight into, or areas with plenty of open space. In some cases I adjusted my travel plans to suit the camper van and my safety concerns. I strategically parked in places with angled stalls to easily enter and exit. Ashley Probst Eventually I learned that safely parking and driving the van required a bit of strategy. I wanted to avoid narrow roads, for example. I also didn’t end up taking the van to Honolulu because it was too tall to fit in the city’s parking structures and I was concerned about my safety. For one, I was anxious about driving there, since it can get crowded. And though Honolulu is relatively safe, there were reports of more than 600 car break-ins from late July to late August. The large van would certainly have stood out on the city streets, making it a potential target. On my first night, I arrived at the campground late and got locked out. I was supposed to park in this spot for my first night in the van, but I couldn’t access it. Persons with HIV who are diagnosed early and who get and stay on ART can keep the virus suppressed and live long and healthy lives. “Life for persons living with HIV is significantly different than it was during the early years of the epidemic when those diagnosed with HIV could expect to live only a year or two,” said Michael Maginn, HIV prevention director, Illinois Public Health Association, which manages Illinois HIV Care Connect with funding from the Illinois Department of Public Health. “As a result, we have many survivors who have reached age 50 and beyond. By taking their medications, staying in care and achieving viral suppression, older adults with HIV increase their life expectancy.” Late HIV diagnoses remain a challenge for adults aged 50 and older According to the most recently available IDPH data, an all-time low of 185 new diagnoses of HIV occurred among persons aged 50 and older in 2019. However, 28% of these diagnoses were late diagnoses. Late diagnoses mean an individual gets a late start on receiving the benefits of HIV treatment and possibly incurs more damage to their immune system, sometimes resulting in a poorer prognosis and shorter survival time. For policymakers at the Federal Reserve, who have been raising interest rates to slow the economy and try to tame recent rapid inflation, the data is further evidence that price increases have yet to show clear signs of coming back under control, even as central bankers wage a policy campaign to slow the economy and tamp down inflationary pressures. Prices rose 8.3 percent from a year earlier, a rapid pace of increase for consumers and not as much of a slowdown as economists had expected, even as gas prices dropped and weighed on the overall numbers. At the same time, so-called core inflation re-accelerated notably in August. That measure strips out volatile food and fuel prices to give a better sense of underlying trends, and it tracks products like clothing and furniture along with an array of services. The core gauge climbed by 6.3 percent in the year through August, compared with 5.9 percent in July. That pickup came partly because the August price gains are being measured against a relatively weak reading from the same month in 2021. When inflation is measured against a lower year-ago number, or “base,” it tends to appear faster. But the report’s details also offered signs that underlying inflation pressures remain very strong. While gas prices and used car and truck costs have begun to dip, other prices are rising fast enough to fully offset those declines: Prices climbed by 0.1 percent on a headline basis over the course of the past month as prices for meals at restaurants, rents and new vehicles picked up. Such factors are likely to keep the Fed firmly in inflation-fighting mode. Central bankers are waiting for a sustained slowdown in price increases to convince them that their policies are working to cool demand and nudge the economy back toward a healthy environment in which inflation is slow, steady and barely noticeable. Until that happens, officials have pledged to keep raising interest rates, moves that can slow borrowing, constrain consumer demand and tamp down hiring and wage growth. Officials are widely expected to make a three-quarter-point interest rate increase when they meet next week, which would be their third supersize move in a row. Policymakers have been clear that they hope to slow the pace of rate moves eventually, but they have said the timing will hinge on incoming data. “Inflation is far too high, and it is too soon to say whether inflation is moving meaningfully and persistently downward,” Christopher Waller, a Fed governor, said in a speech last week. “This is a fight we cannot, and will not, walk away from.” Stocks plummeted and U.S. government bond yields rocketed higher after fresh inflation data undermined investors’ bets over the slowing pace of inflation in August. Futures for the S&P 500 more than 2 percent in premarket trading on Tuesday. Stocks had nudged higher in recent trading sessions, rising 1.1 percent on Monday and nearly 5 percent over the past week, as investors increasingly bet on the Fed’s ability to lower inflation by raising interest rates without slowing the economy to the point of tipping it into a severe downturn. But higher-than-expected August data released on Thursday wrong-footed investors, sending stocks lower and prompting a rapid re-pricing of how much the Fed may need to raise interest rates to rein in rising prices. The two-year Treasury yield, which is sensitive to changes in the forecast path of interest rates, shot higher after the numbers were released, rising to 3.7 percent, marking a fresh high for the year. Solid data on the labor market earlier this month pointed to the resiliency of the economy after several rate increases this year. Coupled with policymakers’ persistent message that they have yet to complete their task of lowering inflation through higher rates, investors have come to expect another big rate increase, of three-quarters of a percentage point, when the Fed meets next week. For a time, some bet on a half-point increase as the more likely option. Following the fresh inflation data, bets that the Fed would move aggressively when policymakers meet next week solidified, with some even starting to price in the possibility that the central bank could raise rates by a full percentage point, which would be its largest rate increase since 1984. Food prices continued to rise in August, increasing by 0.8 percent from July, and fueling a larger than expected increase in inflation last month. Food prices in August were up 11.4 percent from the same month a year ago. Food inflation in the United States has risen to its highest level in more than 40 years this year, driven by trends both within the United States and abroad. Farmers and grocers have had to pay higher prices for gasoline, worker wages and packaging, which they have in turn passed on to their consumers. In August, prices for groceries rose 0.7 percent, while the prices for restaurant meals accelerated more quickly, rising 0.9 percent from the month before. Cereals and bakery products were up 1.2 percent from July. Meats, poultry, fish and eggs rose 0.5 percent. Among the foods with the biggest price increases last month were white bread, doughnuts, hot dogs, potatoes, tomatoes and canned fruits. In the last year, the cost of eating at home has grown 13.5 percent, the sharpest increase since 1979. The cost of dining out is up 8 percent from August 2021. A bout of bird flu earlier this year made chickens and eggs scarce, driving up the prices of both. Droughts in key agricultural regions, like the Western United States and in Brazil, have pushed up the prices of foods like grains and coffee, as has the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a major producer of wheat and sunflower oil. Gas prices fell 10.6 percent in August, which helped moderate still-sky-high inflation, Tuesday’s Consumer Price Index report showed. The energy index, which tracks gasoline and electricity among other energy sources, dropped 5 percent last month, as electricity and natural gas prices rose. German had documented allegations of a hostile workplace environment as well as favoritism for an employee with whom Telles was carrying on an “inappropriate relationship.” As German’s article notes, Telles’s unhappy subordinates had gone to the extreme of videotaping a rendezvous between Telles and the employee in the back seat of her car at a parking garage. “Obviously you can’t talk to the people I deal with on a daily basis,” Telles told German. “But from my social media, from everything you can see, I am about nothing but justice, fairness and just being a good person. And it sickens me; it destroys me that someone would even level, like, accusations like that.” Rhonda Prast, the Review-Journal’s assistant managing editor for investigations and engagement, worked on the piece with German, and she remembers the tone of that interview: “The exchange looks professional and courteous,” she says. Follow Erik Wemple’s opinionsFollow Add That was then. Last week, authorities arrested Telles and charged him with murder in the Sept. 2 stabbing death of German. “Telles was upset about articles that were being written by German as an investigative journalist that exposed potential wrongdoing, and Telles has publicly expressed his issues with that reporting,” Las Vegas police Capt. Dori Koren said in a Thursday news conference. Telles has not yet entered a plea in the case. At the time of his death, German was working on a follow-up article about Telles, and he had made a public-records request for that piece. News of his slaying stunned his colleagues and unnerved journalists across the country — not only because of the brutal circumstances but also because of the broader conundrum at the heart of the case: How can reporters possibly know whom to fear? Telles has not been convicted of any crime. Relations between him and German clearly deteriorated as the journalist pursued his reporting, however, and many of Telles’s subsequent actions raise questions. As German kept writing pieces about Telles through Nevada’s June 14 primary elections, there was a shift in the public administrator’s demeanor. In a volley of tweets, Telles trashed his journalistic investigator: And this one, too: Just what was Telles getting at with his comment about German doing “double duty”? Prast was baffled. “He and I were talking because one of them didn’t make any sense,” Prast says, referring to this nonspecific claim of wrongdoing. She asked German if he was concerned, she told the Erik Wemple Blog, and he said no. “‘I’ve had much worse, bigger threats than this in the past,’” Prast recalls German replying. “Reporters are used to being criticized on social media and it didn’t look like a dangerous threat,” Prast says. German had worked as a journalist for four decades, covering courts, crime and the mob, among many other topics. “This is a guy who for 40 years ran down mobsters and gang members and crooks and really bad guys — and he was never scared of any of them,” Glenn Cook, executive editor of the Review-Journal, tells the Erik Wemple Blog, adding that Telles is a “guy who is literally at the bottom of the ballot.” Telles serves as Clark County public administrator, an elected position that fell between county treasurer and state university regent (District 6) on a list of candidates on the June primary ballot. The public administrator’s office is a small entity entrusted with securing the property of the deceased while a search for “family or the decedent’s executor is performed,” according to its website. Telles lost the Democratic primary for the post — though he remains public administrator until his replacement takes office after the general election — after German’s stories about his mismanagement. As Cook hastens to note, however, the stories documented no criminal wrongdoing — “just a bad person and a bad administrator.” German’s exposé on Telles contains a gem or two. To document Telles’s misfeasance, his co-workers took video of him meeting with a colleague, Roberta Lee-Kennett, in the back seat of her Nissan Rogue. A retaliation complaint filed with the county by one of the staffers in the office — which is cited in one of German’s stories — reads, “Physical contact with a subordinate in a public place and letting that subordinate use favoritism she is getting from these inappropriate meetings to secure power and privileges above others in the office is affecting most of the staff in an extremely negative manner.” Both Telles and Lee-Kennett offered highly quotable responses when German asked them about these meetings. “They said they just talked about the problems in the office and only hugged each other,” German wrote. Lee-Kennett suggested the back seat “because she wanted to make sure Telles would listen to her concerns face to face.” Such explanations notwithstanding, German didn’t get too animated about the Telles scoops, according to his colleagues. “This story doesn’t even come close to Jeff’s top 20 or top 40, probably,” Cook says. “In terms of investigative journalism that makes you say ‘Wow,’ on a scale of 1 to 10, this is maybe a 4or a 5.” The Review-Journal, Cook says, has been aggressive in responding to the security concerns of its journalists — from arranging for security, walking staffers to and from their cars, and moving their parking spaces to seeking restraining orders. However, German “never came to us and told us that he’d received a threat or was scared.” Citing the circumstances of the attack on German, Cook notes, “It’s terrifying for the staff to understand that this is possible, and it is alarming to journalists everywhere that the person that you would least expect to be capable of something like this actually might be.” Killings of journalists in the United States are rare, with the Committee to Protect Journalists tallying 16 such incidents since 1992. Though it’s hard to generalize about the circumstances, three of the 16 are categorized as “dangerous assignment” and many others “murder.” In June 2018, Jarrod Ramos killed five people at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, in what prosecutors termed an act of revenge over how the paper had covered a misdemeanor he’d committed. What’s more, journalists commonly receive death threats from extremists and unhinged people on the internet. Cook distances those circumstances from the allegations in German’s case. “We’re not covering an extremist organization; we’re not covering a rally that’s inciting violence; we’re covering a duly elected official,” he says. Beyond the implications for journalists’ safety, Cook says this case shows how important it is for voters to take seriously “every race on the ballot” and for news organizations to “pay attention to every office, too.” Briana Erickson, an investigative reporter who worked alongside German, says that he was “an institution, really — someone that I would come to if I needed to get perspective on something from his decades from knowing the lay of the land.” Cook says he was a journalism “lifer.” “I never heard Jeff mention the word retirement to me once. I firmly believe he was going to grind away on this till the very end, and even if someone else was in the executive editor’s chair or in the investigations editor’s chair, he was going to get that tip and he was going to do this story.”

She is sitting at her Delaware Street home and, more often than not, she is staring down at her feet. Green is humble. Praise makes her blush. She hates attention. She likes nothing better than to be behind the scenes making things happen, making things better. That, after all, has been her life as editor extraordinaire, doing all the stuff that makes a story great, a story brilliant, and doing it with little credit. Editors don’t get bylines and Green has always liked that. Truth be told, Green doesn’t want to be doing this, either. Being interviewed for a story on her retirement after an illustrious 35-year career of intense, high pressure journalism, helping to churn out newspapers in major metropolitan markets across the United States, her last 20 years at the Indianapolis Star. Green, 58, retired from her role as IndyStar’s sports director Sept. 1 due to health issues. Five days later, she is reluctantly telling her story, one of a humble upbringing that shaped her into a woman who, by 23, was the news director at her first paper. Who, by 28, was third in charge at the Cincinnati Enquirer. And who, in her early 30s, was leading the Broward County edition of the Miami Herald. Green never got the chance to not be in charge. Green had a gentle, calming spirit across the newsroom, IndyStar executive editor Bro Krift said. “She earned her peers’ respect because of her dedication to the craft as well as her devotion to those she worked beside,” Krift wrote in an email announcing Green’s retirement. “She cared about you and me and everyone who came into this newsroom.” Green’s departure from journalism leaves behind a portfolio that brought readers some of the biggest stories to make headlines in the U.S. The first Black president, Barack Obama, in 2008. The tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, that changed the landscape of America. The contentious “hanging chad” 2000 election between George Bush and Al Gore in Broward County. Elian Gonzalez, the 5-year-old boy found on Thanksgiving Day 1999 off the coast of Florida clinging to an innertube as his mother died trying to bring her family to the U.S. from Cuba. In Indianapolis, Green was there for Andrew Luck’s abrupt retirement in 2019, the Pacers-Pistons brawl in 2004, the Hamilton Avenue murders that left three children and four adults dead in an Indianapolis home. And she was there in 2006 for the accident that killed five Taylor University students and ended in the mistaken identification of two victims. Green was there, too, for Qudrat Wardak, the baby with a bad heart who came to Indianapolis from a squalid Afghan refugee camp. He received his new heart in February 2005, a beacon of joy and hope, then he died three months later. Jenny Morlan will never forget that little boy’s death because of the devastation, but also because of Green’s heart and compassion. Green was IndyStar’s front page editor that night in 2005, when she was called over by another editor in the newsroom and told Qudrat had died. Green walked back to her desk, sat down and cried. “She could barely get out the words, ‘Qudrat died,’” said Morlan, a former IndyStar editor who sat across from Green in the newsroom. “I will never forget that, how much she cared about the people her newspaper wrote about.” And how much she cared about the people in the newsroom. Green would never ask anyone to do anything she wouldn’t do herself. Morlan says if a newsroom were a restaurant and, to run smoothly, that restaurant needed the dishes washed, Green would wash the dishes. As big stories broke, Green would not only edit but pitch in to write sidebars and stories, never putting her byline on them. Just writing to make things better. Green loved journalism. She still loves journalism. “If I could have stayed,” Green said from her home last week. “I would have.” ‘She had this presence’ Green is the daughter of artists, a father and mother who sometimes were starving artists. She was a kid in Kansas who, one winter, lived in a tiny one-room studio no bigger than a sun porch with her parents and two brothers. She was a young girl who, in that brutal winter, trudged into the dark, frigid snow to use the outhouse. She was a student who qualified for free school lunches until her mom, Donna Barker, realized that the kids who got free lunches had different colored cards than the children whose families paid for lunch. Donna and Ed Barker sent in the money to make sure Green and her two brothers had the cards that would keep other kids from teasing them. As a young girl, Green tagged along with her parents as they drove from city to city for art shows, her mom a sculptor and her dad a potter. Her dad, Ed Barker, always said: “It’s no way to make a living, but it’s a great life.” Green didn’t dream of being a journalist. That wasn’t something a young girl living in remote Kansas in the 1970s dreamed of. But after graduating from high school, Green went to the University of Kansas, where she enrolled in a copy editing class, and loved it. Then she enrolled in more journalism classes and loved those even more. She started working for the university’s newspaper and knew this would be her career. When she graduated college, Green didn’t have to search for a job. Her first professor took care of that. “He fell for Jenny,” said her husband, Ted Green. “He saw something there.” Green was hired as a copy editor at the Argus Leader in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. But soon, the newspaper saw what her professor had seen. At 23, she was named the paper’s news editor. Fifteen months later, Green landed a spot at the Cincinnati Enquirer as a copy editor then wire editor, then assistant news editor. And then she became news editor, third in charge at the paper.   That’s when Ted Green met his future wife. Ted Green was working in Boca Raton and had been out in the sun playing beach volleyball. He was interviewing for the Enquirer’s sports copy desk in the early 1990s. He went to a news meeting surrounded by people, mostly in their 40s and 50s, mostly men. “And at the far end was this beautiful, 28-year-old news editor, I mean striking,” Ted Green said. When he was introduced at that meeting, Green called him “Tan Ted.” He was hooked. He watched Green go around the table asking what stories were coming the next day, local, national, what would run on the front page. “Man, she was leading this meeting, a woman in her 20s,” Ted Green said. “She had this presence.” When he was hired by the Enquirer, Ted Green continued to watch in awe this young woman who, virtually, ran the newsroom. At night, the journalists would go out to the bar after work. Green and Ted ended up at the same bar on more than one occasion. They fell in love and were married in 1994. Two years later, both got impressive job offers and “Tan Ted” and Green were headed toward the sun. ‘You want to make her proud of you’ In the spring of 1996, the Greens made a new home in Florida working for the Miami Herald. They lived in Hollywood, close to where Green headed the copy desk of the Broward County edition of the newspaper. Ted Green worked in the main newsroom as an assistant sports editor. Green’s passion to give readers her best, her newsroom’s best, went to new levels. When a hurricane ended in tragedy in Broward County, a family electrocuted as they tried to save one another walking into waters with downed lines, as people drove off into canals thinking they were on the road, Green and colleague Mary Byrne wanted to make sure those deaths weren’t buried. They wanted to be sure they were on the front page of the Broward County edition. Green and Byrne drove down I-95, fighting flooding, and pulled into a parking garage by the Miami Herald’s main office. They rolled up their jeans and waded into the newsroom. And they changed the front page of the Broward edition. “They were so concerned that the Broward news get that coverage, they risked a lot,” said Ted Green. “They did this on their own. That was their commitment to their readers.” Paul Anger was there for all of that. He hired Green at the Miami Herald and watched as Green led a copy desk in a Broward newsroom of 100 people. “She was one of the most calm, pragmatic, organized editors that I had ever worked with,” said Anger. “I remember thinking that she is unusual in this business. There isn’t a lot of drama; there isn’t a lot of hand wringing.” Green never needed to raise her voice. Though, she said there was one night in Cincinnati that she yelled across the newsroom when a reporter hadn’t closed a file and deadlines were looming. “So I did that once,” Green said, laughing. “One time.” But mostly, Green never yelled. She didn’t have to. “People wanted to do well not just for themselves but for her,” said Anger. “You wanted to make her proud of you.” Green was brilliant and unbelievably competent, said Rick Hirsch, who led the Broward County office during Green’s tenure and is now the senior editor for talent development at McClatchy. “In some ways, she was too nice to be a journalist,” he said. “She was really kind and level-headed and had great news judgment. She was really just a consummate pro and a delight and had a sense of humor and didn’t take herself too seriously.
