Albert Pujols Is Showing Us The Magic Of Sticking Around – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/albert-pujols-is-showing-us-the-magic-of-sticking-around-the-washington-post/ By the time Albert Pujols hit his historic home run Sunday in Pittsburgh, I was on southbound Interstate 79 heading home. I missed him tattooing a 2-0 pitch in the top of the ninth inning into the distance, toward the skyline and the intensely yellow Roberto Clemente Bridge. I missed the ball landing somewhere beyond right-center and igniting a scramble between three grown men who dived headfirst into the front row for the souvenir. I missed the proud caravan of St. Louis Cardinals fans, my people, going bonkers and turning PNC Park into their Steel City vacation rental. Their shouts of “Albert! Albert! Albert!” energized an otherwise dreary Sunday, all because they had the privilege of witnessing something special. That ball Pujols hammered drove in the go-ahead runs in the Cardinals’ comeback win; more importantly, it was his 697th home run, the fourth most in Major League Baseball history. And where was I during this unforgettable moment that those fans will be telling their kids and grandkids about until their dying day? Back in my car, thinking about how, on my deathbed, I’ll be recounting the September afternoon when I missed what should have been the hands-down greatest highlight in my life as a baseball fan. Oh, I was at that game. I specifically chose that weekend, and that city, with the intention of seeing Albert one last time. This summer, I’ve scrolled through so many of my friends’ vacation pics on Instagram. Some of them have gone to Capri, Italy; Marrakesh, Morocco; and Porto, Portugal. I went to Pittsburgh. It should’ve been the vacation of my dreams. Everything lined up perfectly. Pujols came into Sunday tied with Alex Rodriguez at 696 homers. Instead of sitting out the last game of the road trip, he was in the lineup — playing first base, just like old times. He was even batting cleanup. Anything could happen, and I would be there, in person, to see it for myself. Ten-year-old me would’ve been so proud, thinking I turned out to be the coolest grown-up ever. But by the seventh inning, 42-year-old me kept wondering how traffic might be on the 4½-hour drive back to Washington. It’s so hard to be both a mature adult and a sports fan. The two roles just don’t work together. Who has the stamina to stay up until 2:50 a.m. and watch one of the greatest U.S. Open matches of all time? Sorry, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, but do you mind wrapping up your thrilling, five-set, five-hour smackdown already? We’ve got work in the morning. And who among us can truly shame those Miami Heat fans who left Game 6 early? Yeah, sure, it was the 2013 NBA Finals and Ray Allen was about to hit that unforgettable three-pointer, the stuff of legend, but have you ever navigated downtown Miami gridlock? You would’ve left after the national anthem. That’s why, in retrospect, I side with my buddy Wesley’s dad. Wes Buchek and I have been friends for almost three decades, sharing our love for St. Louis sports. The Bucheks, however, were a bit more die-hard, attending more games at Busch Stadium than I ever did. That is, of course, until the sixth or seventh innings. When the Buchek boys were little, their dad got them tickets to tons of weeknight games, but they always had to leave their seats early. Their dad needed rest; he worked a good, honest job and had to punch the clock in the early a.m., for crying out loud. And Wes — poor buddy — remembers one sad car ride back home, listening to KMOX radio when Bernard Gilkey hit a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to snap the Montreal Expos’ seven-game winning streak. Even today, life keeps getting in the way of Wes catching some of the Cardinals’ magical moments. He and his wife, Amanda Verbeck, having not had a getaway in a while, went off into the boondocks over the weekend. They didn’t have WiFi and therefore missed out on watching Albert slam No. 696. But while Wes was being a responsible husband, I was going to be the big kid cheering on the oldest kid in the park. Pujols is defying what “the end” should look like. He scripted a Hall of Fame career during his first 11 years in St. Louis. He was a once-in-a-generation talent, but he left for the obscurity of the Los Angeles Angels. (Sigh, if only that city would stop poaching our finest treasures.) But thankfully, this season Albert returned to Baseball Heaven, and he’s once again wearing the birds on the bat. He came back to retire as a Cardinal, but he’s nobody’s ornament. He’s not just the aging ballplayer who smiles and waves as he receives gifts from opposing teams and polite applause from rival fans. Instead, he’s pursuing 700 home runs with a mighty swing that’s still one of the most feared in baseball. At the Home Run Derby, Albert pulled off an improbable upset of hard-hitting Kyle Schwarber in the opening round. Last month, he crushed two homers in Phoenix, passing Stan Musial for second all time in total bases. And recently, in his last at-bat against the Chicago Cubs, he won the game with a pinch-hit two-run bomb in the eighth. And he’s doing this while looking like somebody’s tío with that belly protruding over his belt and a hairline that’s going, going, gone. That’s what makes his 22nd and final season so special. He’s one of us — a real-life adult. Albert and I, we’re the same age. So I understand why that six-pack of abs is now just a cask of lard. And yet, he’s got me loving baseball like I did when I was a child. Every night I’m refreshing Twitter — the modern-day equivalent of the next morning’s box score — to see if my balding, bulging Tío Alberto has done it again. That’s why I drove to Pittsburgh, to lounge in the upper deck and wait on history. Then, adulthood started tapping on my shoulder, asking important questions such as whether the gas prices are better in West Virginia or Maryland. The Cardinals were down 1-0 and treating this game against the last-place Pirates as though it was required reading. They looked lifeless, and Albert was 0 for 3. After he struck out, Lars Nootbaar was caught stealing and Tyler O’Neill ended the seventh, I headed for the exits, thinking it was safe to start the long drive home. As I walked the Seventh Street Bridge and heard the fireworks from a Pirates solo home run, I felt even more justified. Still, I kept hearing the protests of my 10-year-old self: Stay! Albert still has one more at-bat! I was less than an hour into my trip and still trying to shake that nagging feeling when I checked the final score. Cardinals, 4-3. Pujols HR. I wanted to slam my head against the steering wheel. I called Wes for comfort. It felt as though he laughed for a minute straight. He had me on speakerphone, and when I shared what might be the worst decision in my sports life, he said Amanda buried her head in the pillow. I went to Pittsburgh to see my favorite ballplayer, my peer, accomplish history. His final season has already been a lesson in unexpected endings. Sunday, he gave me one final reminder: If you don’t stick around until the end, you never know what you might miss.

Google Cancels Their Rumoured ARM-Based Laptop, The Tensor Pixelbook – Firstpost https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/google-cancels-their-rumoured-arm-based-laptop-the-tensor-pixelbook-firstpost/ FP StaffSep 13, 2022 16:14:06 IST For years, Google was working on creating a laptop that would have their ARM-based Tensor processor and would run on ChromeOS. The project was nicknamed Tensor Pixelbook. Now, reports have surfaced that Google has cancelled this project. The company was hoping to unveil the project in 2023 and was said to be far along in development. However, a report by The Verge claims that Google has not only dropped the project but also dissolved the team responsible for building it. Google has been making the Pixelbook since 2017, when they introduced what was supposed to be the ultimate Chromebook, a clamshell device that ran on ChromeOS. Google started making and selling Chromebooks in 2013 and started using the Pixel branding for their ultraportables in 2017. The last Pixelbook that Google launched was in 2019, which was called the Pixelbook Go, an ultraportable that features Intel’s 8th Gen laptop processors, which it still sells. Google’s plan was to use their own silicon for the upcoming Pixelbooks, which would have been launched in 2023., in conjunction with Tensor-powered Pixel tablets. In May this year, Google publicly announced at the I/O developer’s conference that it is committed to making a Pixel-branded tablet as part of Android’s broader large screen push. It’s rumoured to have some crossover as a Nest Smart Display, while a “Pro” version is also being prepared. Back when they were launched, the Pixelbook was pitted against the MacBook Air, mainly because of its impressive construction, and the user experience it offered. Like the It is highly unlikely now that Google themselves will be making a Chromebook, not at least for the foreseeable future. Other manufacturers, however, will continue to make Chromebooks, using the latest CPUs from Intel’s 12th Gen lineup of laptops and ultraportable processors. Google has seen a major round of cost-cutting in recent months. Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai, in recent weeks, has been talking about product consolidation in light of the current economic environment. Google did not confirm the Pixelbook cancellation, but rather said it is committed to building and supporting a portfolio of Google products that are innovative and helpful for our users. Press Perils: Killing Of Las Vegas Reporter Drives Home Dangers Of Modern Journalism – Vancouver Is Awesome https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/press-perils-killing-of-las-vegas-reporter-drives-home-dangers-of-modern-journalism-vancouver-is-awesome/ WASHINGTON — The slaying of a Las Vegas newspaper reporter, allegedly at the hands of one of his investigative targets, is driving home a reality the U.S. hasn’t had to confront since the Civil War: journalism on home soil is becoming more dangerous. WASHINGTON — The slaying of a Las Vegas newspaper reporter, allegedly at the hands of one of his investigative targets, is driving home a reality the U.S. hasn’t had to confront since the Civil War: journalism on home soil is becoming more dangerous.  Jeff German, 69, an old-school investigative reporter with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, was stabbed to death outside his home last week — months removed from his exposé of the Clark County Public Administrator’s office.  That administrator, Robert Telles, appeared in court Thursday to face murder charges, his forearms bandaged from what police — who allege that traces of his DNA were found under German’s fingernails — described as self-inflicted wounds. “I would like to have said, ‘No, we didn’t see this kind of thing coming in the United States,'” said Celeste González de Bustamante, a professor of journalism at the University of Texas at Austin.  “But we’ve often said that what’s happening in other parts of the world, where press freedoms are under significantly more pressure, is a harbinger of what could be coming in places like the United States.”  It worsened considerably during the presidency of Donald Trump, González de Bustamante said, thanks to a brazen weaponization of media distrust that culminated in calling CNN “fake news” and supporters wearing T-shirts that read, “Rope. Tree. Journalist. Some assembly required.”  “People would say, ‘Oh, you know, this is just talk’ — but talk ends up creating an atmosphere and an environment where physical attacks against journalists are OK.” So far in 2022, the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, an online database managed by the Freedom of the Press Association, has catalogued 28 assaults against members of the media, most of them the result of direct targeting.  It’s a far cry from 2020, when coverage of Black Lives Matter rallies across the country, as well as the superheated atmosphere of that year’s presidential election, resulted in more than 600 reported assaults.   The total for 2021 was 145, many of them coming on Jan. 6 on the grounds of Capitol Hill as Trump supporters swarmed Congress in hopes of disrupting the certification of Joe Biden’s election win.  German’s series of reports, which began in May, described years of turmoil, bullying, workplace hostility and favouritism during Telles’s tenure in the administrator’s office, and likely helped to sink the accused’s re-election bid in June.  Police also found other evidence at German’s home: pieces of a straw hat and bloody shoes that appeared to match those worn by a suspect in an image captured by neighbourhood surveillance video earlier in the day.  Video also shows the suspect driving a vehicle matching the description of an SUV registered to Telles’s wife — a vehicle that investigators towed away from his home on the day of his arrest.  “We cannot remember an elected politician attacking a journalist like this. We hope never to see it again,” the D.C.-based National Press Club said in a statement.  Only 39 journalists have been killed on U.S. soil to date, most of them during the Civil War. Nine have died in the last 30 years, including four who were killed in a mass shooting at a Maryland newsroom in 2018.   “The Capital Gazette, where the newsroom was attacked because of what was written, comes immediately to mind,” the club said.  “It was not long ago. Journalists can be killed while doing their work.” The political climate in the U.S. and elsewhere around the world, where the media is increasingly under attack from behind political podiums, is exacerbating an already dangerous situation, said González de Bustamante.  “You have an environment where misinformation and disinformation is rampant,” she said, and media literacy — a public understanding of how journalists actually do the work of gathering news — is at an all-time low.  “It’s all of these sort of factors coming together, and creating a real recipe for disaster and for violence.” The U.S. is hardly the only western country where journalism has become a more perilous career choice. In Mexico, a hotbed of gang wars, the drug trade and corruption, 15 media workers have died to date in 2022 alone, making it one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists operating outside of a war zone.  And in Canada, a recent study led by Carleton University journalism professor Matthew Pearson and veteran CBC journalist Dave Seglins found media workers reported high rates of anxiety, post-traumatic stress and harassment, both online and on the job.  In his classes, while there is growing awareness and trepidation among students about the dangers, there’s also a willingness to confront them, Pearson said in an interview. “I see a lot of resolve; I see people who are very committed to this work, and who want to do it in spite of what might come to pass,” he said — and they might be better able to handle online harassment than their older colleagues. “In a strange way, they are actually more equipped to deal with online harassment than some older folks … this is the generation who has grown up with the idea of cyberbullying, with the presence of cyberbullying.” Still, earlier this month, a coalition of Canadian media organizations wrote to urge Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to take steps to make it easier to investigate and prosecute those who target journalists online. “This is a profound and spreading social harm that we cannot afford to ignore and that we must find ways to counter,” read the letter from the Canadian Association of Journalists. Harassment was a particular concern for reporters in the field during the “Freedom Convoy,” a three-week blockade of Ottawa’s parliamentary district by protesters opposed to COVID-19 restrictions and vaccine mandates.  Pierre Poilievre, a veteran Conservative MP who openly courted the support of protesters in the early February days of his bid to lead the party, saw that strategy pay off over the weekend with a convincing first-ballot victory. Whether he’ll continue to cultivate those connections remains to be seen.  In the meantime, journalists will press ahead, even if they find themselves as torn — as Pearson said he does at times — between an abiding passion for the work and the personal risk that can come with it.  “I would just implore any person with any political power to really think about the messages that they deliver to their supporters and the people who get vehemently behind them,” he said.  “And to really think about the ways in which we frame our hostility toward the media, and the responsibilities that they might have in doing so.”  This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 13, 2022.  James McCarten, The Canadian Press

University Is First New England Campus To Sign Charter Promoting Health Among Students And Staff – The Boston Globe https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/university-is-first-new-england-campus-to-sign-charter-promoting-health-among-students-and-staff-the-boston-globe/ University of Massachusetts Lowell recently took action to highlight its commitment to promoting health and wellness. The university adopted the Okanagan Charter, a document in which post-secondary schools pledge to embed health promotion in all aspects of campus life and culture, and to help lead efforts to further it locally and globally. UMass Lowell becomes the first New England campus to sign the charter. Created at an international conference in 2015, the charter is intended to give colleges and universities a framework to more thoroughly and systemically promote health and wellness. UMass Chancellor Julie Chen cited the university’s ongoing efforts to encourage healthy living and general well-being, including its creation of an Office of Student Life & Well-being last year. But she said, “By signing the Okanagan Charter, we commit ourselves to viewing everything we do through a lens of promoting the health of our students, faculty, and staff — from individual practices to the policies we put in place across the university.”

UEFA Champions League Bold Predictions: Chelsea Start Slow Under Graham Potter Crisis Deepens At Juventus CBS Sports
UEFA Champions League Bold Predictions: Chelsea Start Slow Under Graham Potter Crisis Deepens At Juventus CBS Sports
UEFA Champions League Bold Predictions: Chelsea Start Slow Under Graham Potter, Crisis Deepens At Juventus – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/uefa-champions-league-bold-predictions-chelsea-start-slow-under-graham-potter-crisis-deepens-at-juventus-cbs-sports/ It might have been less than a week since the Champions League began, but already it feels like we are entering a critical period of the competition. By the end of this week a third of the group stages will be concluded. Though it is not impossible for a team to overcome back to back losses to start the competition, it certainly makes for a pressured start to the tournament. As such let’s cast our eyes over three teams with plenty to prove after matchday one: Juventus, Liverpool and Chelsea. Juventus vs. Benfica: Allegri slips deeper into the mire Amid the thrills and furor of their fightback in Campania — most notably a contentious VAR call that denied Arkaduisz Milik a late winner but not a red card — it has perhaps gone forgotten that Juventus were 2-0 down to Salernitana. Davide Nicola’s side are not a bad team by any stretch of the imagination but this is the sort of team that a hulking giant of Italian football ought to be able to swat aside. In Massimiliano Allegri’s first spell in charge, Juve would have got out in front early on before throttling the contest as they saved their legs for more pressing concerns. Instead, they spent the dying minutes throwing the kitchen sink, dishwasher, oven and even a colander at Luigi Sepe’s goal. It barely paid off. Discount the penalty Leonardo Bonucci missed and the rebound he turned into the net and Juventus created shots worth just 1.03 expected goals (xG) in a match they were chasing, one where Salernitana were perfectly willing to let them help themselves to the ball. Allegri’s side is one devoid of creativity — at least partly down to injuries suffered by Paul Pogba, Angel Di Maria and Federico Chiesa — that asks Dusan Vlahovic to not just score the goals himself but to beat three or four men in the process. If he wouldn’t mind laying on the pass to himself as well, that would be grand. Take this passage of play early on. The industrious but creatively limited Weston McKennie has slipped Vlahovic in behind the Salernitana lines. Behind him are four Juventus players including the US international and Moise Kean, they’d have ground to make up but it is hardly as if the No.9 is entirely on his own when the pass is played. McKennie’s through ball releases Vlahovic behind the Salernitana defense, with runners ready to support Wyscout/ArenaSport4 Once Vlahovic takes a step onto his right foot ready to take his shot those potential options have dwindled to just Kean, stood in a position where he might be open for a pass but not one that is conducive to increasing the threat level of the attack. One might argue that Vlahovic goes too soon, that he could hold the ball up for longer, but it was not the only occasion in this game (let alone this season) that one Juventus forward has looked around the penalty area with the bafflement of Vincent Vega in Mia Wallace’s apartment. With precious little support, Vlahovic runs into a tight angle and shoots against the side netting Wyscout/ArenaSport4 If that keeps happening it is probably not down to lackadaisical players but a manager who recently told Sky Italia “there is a difference between being beautiful and effective: you have to be effective. I don’t like being ‘pretty’ and not winning”. Right now Allegri’s Juventus are neither. They are the sort of team you watch behind the sofa, whether you’re a neutral or a supporter. At one end of the pitch basic errors and a lack of individual talent mean they are not the sort of defensive force that could keep an opponent to six or seven potshots in a game, and at the other they don’t create much at all from open play. In Serie A they might have a goal difference of plus five but in terms of xG they are no better in attack than they are in defense. The early season underlying metrics suggest this is a pretty average Italian club. Their performance against Paris Saint-Germain offered much the same indication for most of the game. And so to Benfica. It is hard to know exactly how much store to place in the Portuguese giants run of 11 wins from 11 to start the new season. Domestically they are yet to face any of their great rivals while their group stage campaign began with a solid win over Maccabi Haifa, seemingly doomed to be Group H’s whipping boys. But there is creativity and spark aplenty in Roger Schmidt’s side with Rafa, David Neres and Goncalo Ramos all having made bright starts to the season. Against Dynamo Kyiv Benfica showed themselves to be a team capable of dictating terms in a match from start to finish. Juventus haven’t proven themselves to be at that level all that often this season. Things could be about to go from bad to worse in Turin.  Liverpool vs. Ajax: Pressing concerns remain It was no surprise that the spotlight fell harshly on the Liverpool defense in the aftermath of their shellacking in Naples last week. This was a performance riddled with the most basic of errors, one that prompted deep questions over Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk that extended beyond just the 90 minutes in the Stadio Diego Maradona. Those remain important issues for Jurgen Klopp to address — can Gomez get back to the player he was before injury, is this the best defender Alexander-Arnold can be and is Van Dijk’s peak in the rear view mirror? — but they are far from the only issues. Indeed as Jamie Carragher identified on Wednesday’s Champions League Today show on Paramount+, the issues lie far higher up the pitch. “This is a problem for Liverpool – the high line and that they aren’t actually getting pressure on the ball,” said the former Reds defender. “The thing for me, right now is that Liverpool play a high-risk game, but they’re not pressing the ball to stop that high-risk game and it’s causing them the problem. “It’s not a problem with how high the line is, it’s about being compact, being together. But when someone gets time on the ball. So often we say, it’s too easy to get through Liverpool’s midfield. That didn’t happen before, so you could play that high line and be really compact. But if that’s not happening, you have to adapt.” He added: “It’s embarrassing, it really is. I said before, it’s kids’ stuff and this is the big problem with Liverpool right now. They’ve built their success on intensity on the ball, which means their opposition can’t get their head up to put the ball over. So your team is always tight and always really compact, always a risk, but you’ve got energy on the ball. That energy is not there now. So that back four has to adapt. “If they keep playing that [high line] they are going to have a big problem, in terms of the Premier League this season and qualifying for the next round of the Champions League.”  Craving even more coverage of the world’s game? Listen below and follow ¡Qué Golazo! A Daily CBS Soccer Podcast where we take you beyond the pitch and around the globe for commentary, previews, recaps and more.   Speaking after the 4-1 loss Klopp acknowledged that same issue of a lack of intensity at the start of the press. How could he not? The problems are certainly reflected by the numbers. According to fbref Liverpool are attempting far fewer pressures per 90 minutes this season, from 144 to 117, and succeeding in 43 as opposed to 48. Whilst that naturally means the success rate is higher it is also true that Klopp’s side are forcing five fewer turnovers a game through their on ball pressure. Notably as well they are getting to their opponents later, averaging 10 fewer pressures in the final third. In that, as in so many other facets of their play, Liverpool are missing Sadio Mane. As Roberto Firmino‘s athleticism dwindled, the Senegal international became the point of the off-ball attack, one that grew to reflect the development in Mane’s own game. This was not the blitz of Klopp’s early years but a more precise and intricate way of applying pressure. It is perhaps no surprise that Luis Diaz, though he does not lack for industry, is a little too easy to get around otherwise. The same is true in midfield where age and injuries appear to be catching up with Fabinho, Thiago and Jordan Henderson. Increasingly their roles are being taken up by players who, like Diaz, lack the familiarity with the old ways. It is as though the orchestra has lost not just its conductor but its first chair violin, its double bass and a few from the woodwind section. It will take time for others to learn those parts and in the meantime there will be a fair few bum notes. Here is where Carragher and Klopp diverge. The former would propose dropping that Liverpool line back by five yards, giving opponents less space to attack in behind but equally making it easier for them to build play from the back, robbing the Reds of that quick route to goal that has allowed them to score so many in recent years. Klopp’s post match comments appeared to indicate that he instead simply wanted his side to get Plan A right rather than ripping apart a template that has brought so much success to Merseyside in recent years. Of course he also suggested that maybe Liverpool need to “reinvent themselves” but that felt like an idea Klopp was throwing out so as to dismiss, exaggerating for effect. Carragher and Klopp would probably accept there is no silver bullet for these issues, nothing that will solve them right away. That does not augur well for Ajax’s trip to Anfield.  Chelsea vs. Salzburg: Meet the new boss, not dissimilar to the old boss It was not quite the “palpable discord” that Michael Emenalo described as the end of Jose Mourinho’s second tenure at Chelsea but there was still a quite forthright assessment of Thomas Tuchel’s management style emerging from Stamford Bridge in the h...

Liquid Detected In Lightning Connector [Solved] CellularNews
Liquid Detected In Lightning Connector [Solved] CellularNews
Liquid Detected In Lightning Connector [Solved] – CellularNews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/liquid-detected-in-lightning-connector-solved-cellularnews/ When liquid is detected in the lightning connector, your iPhone won’t charge via a cable connection. The situation is a bummer, especially if you need to power up your gadget as soon as possible. Thankfully, you’re already one step into solving the problem because you’ve found this guide. Here, you’ll see what to do about the alert and your iPhone or charging accessory. What the Liquid Detection Alert Means But first, you might be asking, “What does liquid detected in lightning connector mean?” You might also be wondering whether there is indeed liquid or not because your iPhone did not get wet recently. Let’s briefly answer these first. Photo from Apple Support The “liquid detected in lightning connector” alert shows up because moisture or liquid is in your Apple device’s lightning port. However, it could also mean the charging cord’s connector is wet. Sometimes, the notification is only an error or mistake. The charging port or connector is not wet. There could be a foreign substance inside the port, an iPhone software bug, or Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) damage. All these lead to false or inaccurate detections. Port blockage and software issues are often easy to fix, but the same is not the case for the LCI. Photo from Apple Support If you didn’t know yet, the LCI is the contact on the lower- or middle-left side of the latest iPhones when they’re facing you (see iPhone 13 LCI sample image above). The said component turns from silver or white to red when wet. If it is red even if your iPhone didn’t get wet, it might already need a repair. What to Do if Liquid Is Detected in Lightning Connector Whether there is moisture or not, you can try these solutions for the issue. Before you proceed with these, though, don’t forget to press Dismiss on the pop-up alert. Disconnect the iPhone and charging accessories, too. 1. Dry Your iPhone Image by Dariusz Sankowski from Pixabay iPhones, starting from the iPhone 7 series, have IP67 or IP68 ratings for water resistance. The ratings don’t imply your iPhone can survive water damage beyond its expected limit. So, you still have to dry your iPhone once the liquid is detected in its lightning connector. Prolonged moisture can still lead to the rusting of pins inside the port. The best and safest way to get water out of your iPhone charging port is by wiping it and leaving the gadget to dry. Use a clean cloth for this. Make sure nothing is blocking the said interface so the air can get through it. Drying may take 30 minutes to a day, depending on how worse the moisture accumulation is. The process takes time, but it is better to be patient than to try quick hacks that aren’t safe. For example, leaving your iPhone in a rice grain-filled basin. The hack looks cool; however, you risk getting your iPhone ports clogged by particles. 2. Dry or Replace Your Charging Connector Photo by Salman Majeed on Unsplash As mentioned, moisture may only be inside your iPhone charging port. However, to be 100% sure, dry your charging cord at the same time. You can use another piece of clean cloth for it and let the air dry it too. If drying seems tedious for you, there is no need to worry. Charging accessories are less expensive than iPhones, so you always have the option to change your charging cord. After all, it is risky to plug the cord in again when you aren’t sure it didn’t get water-damaged. 3. Look for and Remove Debris Too What if the alert seems to be a mistake? What is the usual reason why your iPhone says there is liquid detected in the lightning connector even if there is none? It can be dirt, dust, or lint. Any of these may prevent charging or trigger a wrong notification. Thus, peek into the iPhone’s charging port or cable’s connector to find any debris. Use compressed air for blowing the particles out. Do it with utmost care because the ports have sensitive components. 4. Get Available iOS Update Photo by Szabo Viktor on Unsplash Another culprit that makes the iPhone deliver an inaccurate liquid detection alert is a software error. So, whenever there is an iOS update available, get it. An update may contain the easy fix you are waiting for, preventing false “liquid detected in lightning connector” alerts from popping up. Here is how to switch to the latest iPhone OS: 1. Use your iPhone and go online. 2. Press your gadget’s Settings app. 3. Once on the settings interface, click General. 4. Swipe up the menu and press Software Update. 5. Select the OS update version you prefer if there are multiple ones ready. 6. Press Download and Install afterward. To not go through this manual process next time, you can set your OS updates to automatic. From the Software Update menu, simply check out the Automatic Updates option. Next, flick the sliders for downloading and installing software updates. It is your choice if it is only the download process you want to automate. 5. Use a Wireless Charging Pad or Stand Photo by Melvin Thambi on Unsplash If a liquid is still falsely detected in the lightning connector, you can charge your iPhone without using a cable. iPhone 8 and newer models work with wireless charging pads. Rely on wireless charging in the meantime, and wait for your iPhone charging port or LCI to function normally. Use a wireless charger from Apple or a reputable brand to avoid more issues caused by fake accessories. 6. Ask Apple for Assistance Talk to Apple Support if the alert for liquid detected in the lightning connector won’t disappear or if repairs are needed. You can do it via the Apple Support web page, so you can get expert insights or assistance fast. Alternatively, you can install the Apple Support app to get help. Note that the one-year Apple warranty does not cover liquid damages. Therefore, prepare to shell out some money if repairs are needed. Wrap-Up The fixes for when liquid is detected in the lightning connector are not too technical, as you can see. That means you can solve the issue in no time unless it is hardware damage. Whether the issue is software or hardware, we hope the troubleshooting suggestions were useful to you. Is your iPhone’s speaker waterlogged too? If yes, head to our guide for getting water out of your iPhone speaker now.

Pixpel And Concordium Bring Insurance Policy To Web 3.0 Gaming – PR Newswire https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/pixpel-and-concordium-bring-insurance-policy-to-web-3-0-gaming-pr-newswire/ , /PRNewswire/ — Pixpel, an early-stage Mexican based start-up has been awarded the “Free and Open Grant ” by the Concordium Foundation to bring an innovative type of “insurance policy” concept to the NFT gaming market. The soon-to-be-launched P2E platform, Pixpel, will provide a variety of services, including an NFT marketplace and insurance policy to ensure the play-to-earn sector can match Concordium’s signature commitment to safety and accountability in every aspect of Web 3.0. As the first decentralized blockchain with identification at the protocol level, helping facilitate regulatory compliance, Concordium shares Pixpel’s ambition of a legitimate and secure ecosystem for the development and trade of NFTs with in-game utility. Pixpel’s insurance policy will protect users’ safety and rid the P2E sector of scammers looking to cash in on the lack of regulation and security in the space, thereby giving rise to a safer and more enjoyable Web 3.0 gaming community with a restored reputation. “Play to Earn makes it possible for anyone to earn money playing their favourite games -an opportunity that has (up until now) only been reserved for the very best at grand tournaments. Unfortunately, the P2E sector has seen scammers looking to cash in on the lack of regulation and security in the space. Pixpel will collaborate with Concordium blockchain to provide the security and accountability the gamers need in order to feel safe.” says Torben Kaaber, Head of Business Solutions at Concordium. Pixpel founder, Juan Vivas says: “I was 6 years old when I started playing games and fell in love with them, I still play. Later in my life, economics piqued my interest. The Play to Earn games are where my two passions met. I was deeply excited to see the sector growing and becoming an important part of the crypto metaverse, but just as saddened, because of the problems it faced. After a group of my friends suffered because of another mishandled project, I decided to use my knowledge and make the P2E space a better place – the idea for Pixpel was born. Together with Concordium and my team, we are determined to write a new, better page, in the history of P2E.”  CONTACT: Maria Amalia Rojas [email protected] This information was brought to you by Cision http://news.cision.com https://news.cision.com/concordium/r/pixpel-and-concordium-bring-insurance-policy-to-web-3-0-gaming,c3629843 The following files are available for download: SOURCE Concordium

According to the West Wing Playbook, the White House is at odds with CNN over their shift away from showcasing opinions that often skewed to the left and their focus on returning to their news reporting roots. The White House reportedly is not happy with the network’s coverage of President Biden’s “Fight For the Soul of the Nation” speech on September 1st, and also was not happy with the dismissal of Brian Stelter and John Harwood. I met with [the] Lieutenant Governor. I met with a number of local politicians and I met with some pretty deep-pocketed donors. Nobody felt that it was an outlandish kind of thing to consider.” Elder also discussed how the political bug had bitten him, and it’s something he has enjoyed, which is a surprise.  “I didn’t think I would like politics,” Elder revealed. “I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I was surprised at how good I was at it.  “And in about seven and a half weeks which is when I got into the race, with only that much time left. News Radio Coglianese said Friday that the media coverage of a Nevada politician murdering a local journalist has been politicized. Published 18 hours ago on September 12, 2022 WMAL’s Vince Coglianese said Friday that the media coverage of a Nevada politician murdering a local journalist has been politicized.  According to Forbes, Clark County Administrator Robert Telles allegedly stabbed to death Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German. Authorities believe German’s reporting on several scandals in Telles’ office may have prompted the fatal stabbing.  “Most of the coverage of this does not include mention of the party affiliation of the attacker,” noted Coglianese. “The only reason why I am even harping on this is because you understand how this is framed and would be framed in the event that this could be tied to the politics of someone who may be conservative.”  Coglianese suggested that if the assailant was tied to the Republican party, the lead story would include the party affiliation.  “Instead, here what we get is censorship,” said Coglianese. “We get fewer details, opacity, and it goes further than that. Reporters this week, including in Nevada, are attempting to not connect this to politics as it relates to this guy’s political party. They are attempting to blame Donald Trump.”  Coglianese said it’s hard to believe that there’s a Trump connection given the public details that have emerged thus far.  “What in the world would Trump have to do with this?” Coglianese said. “When in the world has Trump ever advocated for violence against journalists?”  You can hear the “Vince Coglianese Show” on weekdays from 3-6 p.m. on 105.9 FM WMAL in Washington D.C. Extreme Travel Experiences Growing In Popularity NewsNation Now
Extreme Travel Experiences Growing In Popularity NewsNation Now
Extreme Travel Experiences Growing In Popularity – NewsNation Now https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/extreme-travel-experiences-growing-in-popularity-newsnation-now/ (NewsNation) — Taking a vacation no longer necessarily means lounging on a beach. Mysterious realms of the planet are being revealed like never before, with some saying extreme vacations are becoming more accessible to the average person. Even with prices bordering on steep, people are still booking trips to all ends of the Earth. From deep sea dives costing anywhere from $45,000 to $250,000 to climbing Mount Everest for anywhere from $30,000 to $160,000 or visiting the North and South Pole for around $7,775, people appear to be hungry for unusual, challenging travel experiences following the pandemic. Extreme travel options include a nearly $20,000 cruise around the world that hits about 50 destinations or a visit to the Titanic’s shipwreck, two miles below the ocean surface. Sandra McLemore, a travel industry expert, appeared on “NewsNation Prime” to discuss the exotic travel choices gaining popularity. “It’s not really a new thing. I think it’s the fact that we missed it. When you take something away from somebody, they just want it even more afterwards,” she said. McLemore says there are some phenomenal travel experiences out there for nearly every budget. Starting on the high end, McLemore says she’s seen “people chartering planes and literally flying around the world one step at a time, wherever their heart or their place will take them. I’ve seen people doing world cruises of 164 days. I’ve seen people going on expeditions to Antarctica and playing with penguins.” For those on a budget, she says, there’s a 111-day world cruise that has 50 different destinations and comes with a twist. “What most people don’t know is that you can actually purchase a segment of the cruise. World cruises are often broken into 14-day segments. So, it’s just a matter of picking which segment of the world you want to cruise and taking yourself on a portion of that world cruise for a fraction of the price,” McLemore said. And while “it’s not realistic for people to rent a jet or charter a plane … what most people don’t know is that companies like JSX, they’re just one of the very many private air companies. You can fly private for around $200 a flight per person right here in America. You still get that luxury feeling and that exclusive experience, but you’re not breaking the bank.” McLemore says there are a few spots in particular where the dollar can really stretch on vacation. “If you were traditionally on a Holiday Inn budget, you could really get something luxurious in somewhere like Bali, Indonesia, South America, Costa Rica or even Mexico. There are some great places where your dollar stretches further, and you really can step into luxury,” McLemore said. McLemore recommends booking with a professional travel advisor to help find the best value experiences.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome, also known as PCOS, is fairly prevalent today. The awareness that you can control it with exercise is rare. An active lifestyle helps to regulate hormones and maintain your ovaries healthy in addition to a balanced diet. One such PCOS workout that has significant advantages for your general health is Pilates. “Did you know Pilates works excellent for women with PCOS” says fitness instructor Yasmin Karachiwala. Later, Karachiwala mentions 3 ways in which Pilates can be helpful for women with PCOS. 3 ways in which Pilates improves PCOS symptoms according to Yasmin Karachiwala: 1. “Manages hormonal imbalances” Pilates is very beneficial for hormone balance. Your neurological system will benefit greatly from deep muscle activation. Better communication between your brain and other body components develops, which in turn controls the release of hormones. Hormone levels can be significantly improved by doing Pilates frequently for four to six months. 2. “Helps reduce stress levels” Your body might suffer greatly from stress. Your health is affected physically, which will make you feel more stressed. Try to exercise, breathe, and relax to relieve tension and anxiety. Pilates is one of the best workout regimes for PCOS because of its capacity to manage stress, which is another factor. 3. “Builds lean muscle mass and burns calories” The main sign of PCOS is weight gain. Getting heavy on the treadmill is the initial response to weight gain. However, cardio might not do much good unless you deal with the underlying problem. You gain weight when you have PCOS due to hormonal changes. Try milder but still effective activities like Pilates and yoga to strengthen your uterus. Pilates also helps build muscles. An increase in muscle mass also helps burn calories faster. Take a look at her reel: Follow a healthy diet along with Pilates to ensure improvement in PCOS symptoms. Six Trends Driving Near-Term Adoption Of Metaverse Technologies IT Brief New Zealand
Six Trends Driving Near-Term Adoption Of Metaverse Technologies – IT Brief New Zealand https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/six-trends-driving-near-term-adoption-of-metaverse-technologies-it-brief-new-zealand/ Six trends are driving the use of metaverse technologies and will continue to drive its use over the next three to five years, according to Gartner. Marty Resnick, VP Analyst at Gartner, says that while wide-scale adoption of metaverse technologies is more than 10 years away, there are practical ways organisations are harnessing them now. For example, in employee onboarding, sales enablement, higher education, medical and military training and immersive shopping experiences. “Today, emergent metaverses are in their infancy,” says Resnick.  “But technology trends, with proven use cases and business outcomes, are just the beginning of the value technology innovation brings to the enterprise. The longer-term bets are the true differentiators that could disrupt an entire industry, and the metaverse is one of those bets,” he says.   Gartner defines a metaverse as “the next level of interaction in the virtual and physical worlds.” Metaverse technologies allow people to replicate or enhance their physical activities, by transporting or extending physical activities to a virtual world, or by transforming the physical one. Despite the hype, the adoption of metaverse technologies is nascent and fragmented. Gartner recommends caution when investing in a specific metaverse, as it is too early to determine which investments will be viable in the long term, and the ethical, financial and reputational risks of early investments are not fully known. “Use this time for learning, exploring and preparing for a metaverse with limited implementation,” Resnick says. “Review these six trends for opportunities that could benefit your organisation.” Gaming The gaming industry, specifically video games, has been an innovator in experience and technology for many years. The metaverse will use gaming technologies, methodologies, development tools and even game theory to create experiences for both entertainment and training simulations. Enterprises will adopt “serious games” — gaming technologies, experiences and storytelling for training and simulation of specific work tasks and functions. Gartner predicts that by 2025, the serious games market will grow by 25% due to the impact of metaverse technologies. Digital Humans Digital humans are interactive, AI-driven representations that have some of the characteristics, personality, knowledge and mindset of a human, typically rendered as digital twins, digital avatars, humanoid robots or conversational user interfaces. They can interpret speech, gestures and images, and generate their own speech, tone and body language. Organisations are already planning on using digital humans to act as identified digital agents within metaverse environments for customer service, support, sales and other interactions with current and potential customers. Gartner predicts that by 2027, a majority of B2C enterprise CMOs will have a dedicated budget for digital humans in metaverse experiences. Virtual Spaces A virtual space — or virtual world — is a computer-generated environment where groups of people can come together using personal avatars or holograms. Virtual spaces engage multiple senses and provide participants with the ability to immerse and interact with the space. For example, they can be used to increase reach to customers who are unable or unwilling to join in-person engagements, to provide new alternatives to travel, or to enable collaboration among staff. Gartner predicts that by 2025, 10% of workers will regularly use virtual spaces (in activities such as sales, onboarding, remote teams), up from 1% in 2022. Shared Experiences A shared experience brings a group of people together within a virtual space. The metaverse will move shared experiences out of siloed immersive applications and allow for more opportunities to meet, collaborate, interact, participate or otherwise share experiences across applications, consumer events and services. In this sense, the metaverse will democratise immersive experiences. By 2028, 10% of public events (such as sports and performing arts) will offer participation in metaverse, fuelling rapid buildout of commercial metaverse shared experiences, according to Gartner. Tokenised Assets Tokenised assets offer new business models for content creators. In metaverse experiences, most tokenised assets will use non-fungible token technologies (NFTs). NFTs support new economic models, for example, where content creators perpetually retain most of the revenue from sales of their works. The new features and functionalities enabled by the metaverse will inspire new ways to not only compete and monetise virtual products and services, but also to acquire physical (real-world) goods. Gartner predicts that by 2027, 25% of retail organisations with an e-commerce presence will have completed at least one proof of concept for tokenised assets using metaverse technologies. Spatial Computing Spatial computing combines physical and digital objects to digitally enhance physical spaces. This allows organisations to get more out of physical and digital assets by surfacing related, “unseen” digital information and content anchored to people, places and things. For example, digital content can augment physical objects or environments, such as digital colorisation of Greek and Roman statues or additional product or object information. Gartner predicts that by 2026, the second and third iterations of spatial computing glasses will arrive, creating a more pervasive metaverse experience connected to the physical world.

Customize Your IPhones Lock Screen With These 27 Killer New Features On IOS 16 Gadget Hacks
Customize Your IPhone’s Lock Screen With These 27 Killer New Features On IOS 16 – Gadget Hacks https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/customize-your-iphones-lock-screen-with-these-27-killer-new-features-on-ios-16-gadget-hacks/ Apple just made its most significant update ever to the iOS lock screen, with a lot of features to be excited about. The theme of this upgrade is customization, giving you complete control over the look and functionality of your iPhone’s lock screen. The new lock screen capabilities are available in iOS 16, and it doesn’t look like they’ll be hitting iPads until next year, likely with iPadOS 17. There are many new wallpaper options, cool effects, Focus integration, and data-rich widgets, to name a few of the new features. Don’t Miss: All 350+ New iOS 16 Features for Your iPhone 1. Lock Screen Switching Apple’s iOS 16 lets you create multiple lock screens that you can switch between whenever you want, and you don’t even have to leave the lock screen to do it. To change lock screens, tap and hold the image, date, or time on the lock screen, then swipe left or right and tap the theme you want. This is the only way to switch between lock screens since there isn’t a switching option in Settings – Wallpaper. However, you can visit the “Wallpaper” settings to add a new wallpaper, which will switch the lock screen to whatever you create. 2. Lock Screen Gallery To create a new lock screen, open the lock screen switcher. Then, either swipe to the end and choose the “Add New” option or tap the plus button at the bottom. If you only have the one default lock screen, you can select “Customize” then “Add New” from the actions menu. You can also unlock your iPhone and visit Settings – Wallpaper, then select “Add New Wallpaper. And if you only have the one default lock screen, you can choose “Customize” under the lock screen image, then tap “Add New.” The new lock screen gallery should appear where you can choose from any wallpaper theme available or a custom one. 3. Real-Time Weather Wallpaper If you want to see the latest weather conditions whenever you look at your iPhone, the new live weather wallpaper can help. Select it, and it will visually show you the current local conditions in the background, like clouds moving or rain falling, and it will also provide weather stats around the date and time. 4. Real-Time Astronomy Wallpapers There are also astronomy wallpapers that update in real time. You can choose between seeing close-up details of Earth, the whole planet, close-up details of the moon, the entire moon, or the solar system. As the astronomical conditions change, so will your wallpaper. 5. Emoji Wallpapers Your wallpaper can also be all emoji if you want. Choose a premade look or select the emoji button. You can switch out or choose between one and six characters to include in the graphic. You can then change the background color and switch between different views, including small, medium, and large grids, rings, and a spiral design. 6. Gradient and Solid Color Wallpapers You can also pick a new colored wallpaper. There are a few premade options in the “Color” section, but you can also tap “Color” up top to pick your own background color, intensity, and filter. There are bright, deep, tone, vapor, and vibrant filters, as well as a solid option if you don’t like gradients. 7. More Apple-designed Wallpapers There are more premade options under the “Collections” category. Here, you’ll see the default iOS 16 look, dynamic options, timely themes such as pride and unity, and other designs. 8. Original iPhone Wallpaper As a special surprise in the “Collections” category, there’s a new clownfish wallpaper. While I say new, the still image of it is pretty old but never was released to the public. It only appeared on the iPhone when Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone, so it’s quite a treat. More Info: How to Get Apple’s Very First iPhone Wallpaper on Your Home or Lock Screen 9. Photo-shuffling Wallpapers While you can choose to upload one of your own photos as your lock screen wallpaper, you could select “Photo Shuffle” to make iOS 16 automatically change the background every hour, every day, every time you wake your iPhone, or any time you tap the lock screen. You can choose between a suggested them like “Nature,” use “Featured Photos,” or opt to select images manually. 10. Photo Wallpaper Suggestions If you want just a single photo to be your lock screen wallpaper, choose “Photos,” You’ll see new suggestions that iOS 16 intelligently picks from your Photos library under the “Featured” tab. You may see other tabs, such as “Nature,” to help you quickly select a suitable background. You can also just hunt for the image you want, like before. 11. Intelligent People Album While you could always use images of people before for your lock screen wallpaper, now they’re easier to find. On iOS 15, it would not show the intelligent “People” album from Photos when browsing images in the Wallpaper settings. The lock screen gallery in iOS 16 does offer it — select the “People” button to see everyone in your library. You should also be able to find the people category from the “Photos” button. 12. Photo Wallpaper Styles When using an image uploaded from your Photos library, you can swipe left or right to choose a stylized look for the wallpaper. You can keep the image in its natural state or use a black and white, duotone, color wash, studio lighting, or color backdrop filter, depending on the type of photo and the composition. 13. Multilayered Photo Effects You may notice that some of the available lock screen wallpapers, and even some of your own photos, contain elements that dynamically overlap the time and date when no widgets are there. The default iOS 16 wallpaper does it, and so does the striped wallpaper and some of the astronomy ones. For your own images, it works best in portrait photos. This effect works on iPhone XS and newer iPhone models. 14. Date/Time Font and Color Picker The data and time shown on the lock screen were WYSIWYG before iOS 16. Now, you can change between six different fonts, many different colors, and even characters in other languages. When you change the font color, it also changes the colors of all the widgets (which we haven’t even gotten to yet!). 15. Lock Screen Widgets Now for my favorite part: widgets. You’ll see widgets already on your lock screen if you choose one of the available designs in the gallery that has them, but you can edit the ones you see whenever you want. Plus, you can add widgets to any lock screen design. Widgets display frequently updated data from their primary apps. For example, the Weather app has a widget that shows the weather in any you choose, and the Calendar app has a widget to display the date or the next event. You can tap on most widgets when your iPhone is unlocked and on the lock screen to jump you to their associated apps. You can put widgets above and below the time. The top widget space where the date resides can be customized to include moon events, calendar events, Activity ring progress, and other widget stats. The date will always remain in the same box sans the month name. The bottom widget space lets you add up to four small widgets. Some medium widgets take up two spots, so you can have up to two of those. Right now, you’ll see only Apple widgets for Batteries, Calendar, Clock, Fitness, Home, News, Reminders, Stocks, and Weather. However, a lot of Apple’s widgets for the home screen are missing here, including App Store, Books, Contacts, Files, Find My, Game Center, Mail, Maps, Music, Notes, Photos, Podcasts, Screen Time, Shortcuts, Siri Suggestions, Smart Stack, Tips, TV, and Wallet. 16. Third-Party Lock Screen Widgets Like Apple did with Today View widgets in iOS 8 and home screen widgets in iOS 14, third-party developers can create lock screen widgets for their apps using the new WidgetKit API. Widgets will follow a textual, circular, or rectangular format. A few apps you can try out right away include TickTick and Countdowns. Don’t Miss: Try Upcoming Apps, Features, and IAPs on Your iPhone for Free — Before They Hit the App Store 17. Lock Screen and Focus Pairings When creating a new lock screen, tapping “Focus” on the wallpaper preview lets you link one of your focuses. You can choose between Do Not Disturb and any custom focuses you set up. When you link a Focus mode to a specific lock screen theme, it automatically switches to that theme when you turn on that Focus mode. Likewise, if you switch lock screens to another one with an associated Focus mode, that Focus mode will activate. For example, in the screenshots below, I have Do Not Disturb assigned to one of my color themes. It automatically syncs the wallpaper, font, and widgets to that theme whenever DND is enabled. If you set a specific Focus mode to multiple lock screens, the first lock screen associated with it will be the default. 18. Add New Lock Screens from the Focus Menu You can link a focus from the lock screen switcher, but you can also do so from Settings – Focus. Tap the focus you want, and you’ll see a “Customize Screens” section that shows your currently assigned lock screens. Tap “Edit” to set another lock screen or remove one, or tap “Choose” if none are assigned yet. From the lock screen picker that appears, you’ll see suggested lock screens that would work well for the focus, but you can also open the gallery to see more or use an existing lock screen. 19. Add New Lock Screens from Wallpaper Settings While it’s most convenient to add and switch between lock screens from the lock screen, you can also go to Settings – Wallpaper, where you can tap “Add New Wallpaper” to pick a new background from the lock screen gallery. If you are currently using a custom lock screen, you can tap “Customize” under the lock screen preview to change widgets, colors, and more. 20. Matching Home Screen Wallpapers Whether yo...

A Sceptics Guide To Crypto: The Crypto Wild West Financial Times
A Sceptic’s Guide To Crypto: The Crypto Wild West – Financial Times https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/a-sceptics-guide-to-crypto-the-crypto-wild-west-financial-times/ This is an audio transcript of the Tech Tonic podcast episode: A sceptic’s guide to crypto — the crypto Wild West Jemima Kelly OK. We’re gonna start this episode somewhere a bit different . . .  [MUSIC PLAYING] Audio clip The West. In the lusty days when the surge of civilisation pushed onward to broader horizon . . .  Jemima Kelly In cowboy country . . .  Audio clip . . . of man wrested new life from the wilderness . . .  Jemima Kelly The great US state of Wyoming. Audio clip . . . on the pioneer trail came the renegade horde, land sharks, highwaymen, cattle thieves, [sound of gun shot] terrorising settler and tribesmen alike. Jemima Kelly Wyoming is famous for its vast prairies, its stunning wildlife, and its Wild West history. Audio clip Antelope bleat peacefully on blessed slopes. Woof! Woof! A black bear. But don’t worry, he is friendly. He won’t bother you . . .  Jemima Kelly It’s a state of cattle ranches and cowboy hats, small government and frontier spirit. Audio clip Mr. Gannon! [sound of multiple gun shots] Jemima Kelly But in recent years, Wyoming has been fighting at the frontier of another type of Wild West: the lawless world of crypto. News clip We’re here in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This is the state’s capital. It’s also looking to become the crypto capital of the United States . . .  Jemima Kelly The state has enacted dozens of laws to attract crypto businesses from all over the world. Rob Jennings They were out — what I would call — regulatory shopping. I mean, they were in Malta, they were Puerto Rico, they were in Switzerland. You know, they were bouncing around all over the world to find a safe haven who was gonna allow them to maybe cash out or not be accused of securities fraud. Jemima Kelly But the question is: why Wyoming? Rob Jennings You had a lot of people in the legislature who are ranchers and businesspeople who don’t know anything about it. I think some of them are gonna start saying, hey, wait a minute: why are we passing so many blockchain laws? [MUSIC PLAYING] Jemima Kelly This is Tech Tonic from the Financial Times, a podcast about how technology is changing the world for the better and for the worse. I’m Jemima Kelly, and this is, I’m afraid, the last episode in this series: A Sceptic’s Guide to Crypto. Crypto is almost completely unregulated. It’s less regulated than the gambling industry, and critics don’t always agree on quite what’s needed. But one thing is clear: we need more consumer protection and regulatory oversight than we have now. Instead, in many places, something quite different is happening. A huge lobbying effort by the crypto industry and regulators in turn, who seem to be in a race to the bottom. This is episode five: the crypto Wild West. Rob Jennings Wyoming is a wonderful state, and I actually just got married in Cheyenne a couple of weeks ago. Jemima Kelly Congratulations. Rob Jennings Thank you. Jemima Kelly Rob Jennings is a businessman, born and raised in Wyoming. Rob Jennings It’s a, it’s a different state. I mean, obviously, natural resources are a big part of the economy there. Oil, gas, coal. Cattles obviously a big part of not only Wyoming’s economy, but Wyoming’s sort of identity or heritage, you know. Jemima Kelly And as unlikely as this is gonna sound, cattle is what led Rob to blockchain. A few years ago, he started to explore how this exciting sounding technology, the technology that Satoshi Nakamoto invented with his creation of Bitcoin, might have useful applications in the cattle industry. Rob Jennings My thought was, “well, how do we apply this technology to something that actually adds value to something that is going on here in Wyoming?” And one of the issues or problems is that Wyoming beef ends up in commodity markets. So you know the attributes that are utilised in raising those cattle: humane treatment and grass fed. Or organic or, you know, all the different things, all natural, non-hormone treated, all those things that Wyoming ranchers put into their cattle and other places gets lost in the supply chain. Jemima Kelly So Rob started a blockchain company for the beef industry, and he called it BeefChain. [Moo sound] A perfect name. Using the blockchain to record the details of each cow as it moved through the beef supply chain from field to abattoir. Rob Jennings If you’re using a blockchain or a decentralised database, you’re just creating a digital notary. That’s really what we’re trying to do, is create a trustworthy, a mutable starting point for the origin and source and age of the cattle. Jemima Kelly Rob thought the idea was promising and he later set up another company on similar lines to BeefChain, called CattleProof. Whether or not you think blockchain technology is a good solution to these kind of logistical supply chain issues, the point is that Rob was interested in finding ways that it could help the local economy and local businesses in Wyoming. And to explore that further, in 2017, he decided to start a sort of lobby group called the Wyoming Blockchain Coalition in the state capital. Rob Jennings I said, Hey, let’s, let’s set up a meeting in Cheyenne and let’s just invite a group of people and learn what blockchain is. So we invited the mayor and, you know, city council people, different leaders. Had about 15 or 20 people show up. Jemima Kelly And at first he was encouraged by the apparent enthusiasm shown by lawmakers. Wyoming is, after all, an old Wild West state. It has some of the lowest taxes in the US and so the libertarian values of the crypto Wild West seemed like a perfect match. But very quickly, Rob realised that Wyoming’s politicians were less interested in the applications blockchain could have in local industries like cattle ranching, and more interested in getting a piece of the then booming crypto industry. Rob Jennings The first mission was sort of not something I ever intended for us to be a part of, but we had learned that Wyoming had a money transmitter law that prevented people in Wyoming from using apps like Coinbase and others to trade cryptocurrency. And so consequently Coinbase locked out anybody that was from Wyoming. So one of the first things that we were a part of working on was changing the law to allow Wyoming people to trade cryptocurrency on different platforms. Jemima Kelly And was that successful? Rob Jennings Yeah. I mean, they’re able to lose money along with the rest of everybody. So, yeah, I guess it has been successful. (laughter) Jemima Kelly The so-called Coinbase Law was just the beginning. Wyoming started enacting dozens of new laws around crypto. There was a law that made sure cryptocurrencies didn’t get taxed. There were changes to securities regulations, especially for crypto. There was even a law recognising DAOs — decentralised autonomous organisations — as real companies. And what troubled Rob was that it didn’t appear to be Wyoming’s own legislators that were coming up with these laws. They understandably didn’t know much about crypto. Instead, it was the crypto companies and their lobbyists who were effectively writing the new laws for them. Rob Jennings They were working extremely closely, phone to phone, person to person, not just some emails and things of that nature. They, you had the crypto guys who’re writing the laws. Let’s be honest about it. You think they’re gonna find one Wyoming legislator that was writing any complex financial securities or blockchain laws. Jemima Kelly One example Rob cites is of a prominent investor in a crypto exchange called Kraken, working with a member of the Wyoming Blockchain Coalition and a Wyoming banking regulator, to write an important new state law that would allow crypto banks to operate in Wyoming. Rob Jennings You know, one Christmas Day, they all got on the phone and wrote this special depository institution law that created these banks. And most of the laws were very complex banking and financial regulatory type laws. And then you had a lot of people in the legislature who are ranchers and businesspeople who don’t know anything about it — 95 per cent of, they don’t know what’s going on. And they were sold on this idea that Wyoming was losing out on coal money. And we had the, you know, the blockchain was gonna save us. It just seemed to me that the whole thing became less about how we’re helping Wyoming and more about how we can sort of game this regulatory sandbox to benefit people who have no intention of ever moving to Wyoming, other than maybe setting up an LLC. Jemima Kelly Companies that have set themselves up there include Kraken, the team behind the cryptocurrency Cardano and the banker-friendly crypto company Ripple, whose tokens Hollywood actor Ashton Kutcher once promoted on the Ellen DeGeneres talk show. Wyoming’s crypto promoters say it’s been a huge success. Caitlin Long Wyoming was very interested in being early and grabbing the opportunity to be the first state and looking to bootstrap what we think is going to be and is playing out a truly important niche of the financial services industry. Jemima Kelly Caitlin Long worked with Rob Jennings on the Wyoming Blockchain Coalition. After a 22-year stint on Wall Street, she came back to her home state and helped to write many of the new crypto laws. And she says the idea all along was to make Wyoming the US capital for crypto finance. Caitlin Long They saw that there was a way to attract this industry and not have a lot of costs to the state. It really didn’t cost the state anything other than just the cost of the legislative time. And I think all but the most ardent crypto opponents and the traditional bankers who didn’t want any new competition coming in would say, Yeah, actually, if you look at the cost benefit to the state of Wyoming, given that it sp...

Tribal Spies In Syria Help U.S. Win Drone War Against Islamic State – Reuters.com https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/tribal-spies-in-syria-help-u-s-win-drone-war-against-islamic-state-reuters-com/ Memory of Islamic State’s massacres drives informants Human intelligence crucial as militants shun phones Hundreds of Islamic State fighters still in eastern Syria AMMAN, Sept 13 (Reuters) – When the U.S. military targeted Islamic State commander Maher al-Agal with a drone strike in northern Syria in July, there was little chance it would miss. The reason? Revenge. With Islamic State’s last battle-hardened forces holed up in remote areas, the United States is turning to the aid of tribesmen burning to exact revenge for the atrocities unleashed by the group when it ruled over swathes of Syria and Iraq. Still thirsty for vengeance eight years after the group, which is also known as Daesh, massacred hundreds of their clan, Sheitaat tribesmen in Syria had planted a tracking device on the motorbike Agal was riding when he was killed, one of the people who tracked him down said. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The tribesman, whose account was confirmed by a Western intelligence officer in the region, said tribal relatives in contact with the Islamic State commander’s immediate family had secretly been keeping tabs on him for months in northern Syria. “I exacted revenge in blood for those of my tribe whom Daesh crucified, executed and beheaded without mercy,” the person, who declined to identified for security reasons, told Reuters by phone from Syria. “It has healed the burning in our hearts.” In one of its bloodiest atrocities, Islamic State massacred more than 900 members of the Sheitaat tribe in three towns in Syria’s eastern Deir al-Zor region in 2014 when they rebelled against jihadist rule. While Islamic State is a shadow of the group that ruled over a third of Syria and Iraq in a Caliphate declared in 2014, hundreds of fighters are still camped in desolate areas where neither the U.S.-led coalition nor the Syrian army, with support from Russia and Iranian-backed militias, exert full control. The Arab tribesmen in Syria seeking vengeance are now part of a growing network of tribal spies playing a significant role in the U.S. military’s campaign to further degrade the group, three Western intelligence sources and six tribal sources said. “These networks of informants are working with the Americans who are planting them everywhere,” said Yasser al Kassab, a tribal chief from the town of Gharanij in the Deir al-Zor area. “Informants from the same tribe are tipping off about their own cousins in Islamic State,” he said. Asked about the role of tribal informants in Syria, a U.S. military official said that in the operation against Agal, the targeting was almost entirely based on human intelligence. “This is something that required a deep network in the region,” said the official, who declined to be named as he was not authorised to speak publicly about the matter. A DEEP NETWORK The Western intelligence officer who confirmed the account of Agal’s assassination, and the lengthy period of tracking by tribesmen before the strike, has been briefed on tribal support for counter-insurgency activities by the U.S.-led coalition. The U.S. military, which has about 900 troops in northeastern Syria, said Agal was one of the group’s top five leaders and had been responsible for developing Islamic State networks outside Iraq and Syria. U.S. Central Command said at the time that the strike against Agal followed extensive planning. read more With many of Islamic State’s foreign commanders killed or detained, Syrians have become increasingly significant in its leadership, making the militants more vulnerable to penetration by fellow Syrians keen to settle scores, Western and regional intelligence sources and three senior tribal figures said. While four sources familiar with the intelligence gathering operation say money is sometimes paid for information, many informants are driven by revenge for the atrocities committed by the group at the peak of its power. Some informants were being recruited by tribal intermediaries who were already part of the network. Others were contributing directly via a phone line set up by the coalition to receive tips, Sheitaat tribal chief Kassab said. The U.S. military officer confirmed that informants were paid but did not elaborate. The U.S.-financed tribal networks have penetrated Islamic State sleeper cells and compiled data on new recruits, who include fellow tribesmen in some cases, five tribal sources said. The three Western intelligence officers and a regional security official corroborated their accounts. Many of the spies come from the Sheitaat tribe, an offshoot of Syria’s biggest tribe, the Akaidat, who fought with U.S.-backed forces to drive Islamic State from swathes of northeast Syria, taking the city of Raqqa after a long battle in 2017. “They want revenge so they resort to cooperating with their relatives to leak information and give locations of leaders of IS. They use the tribal links,” said Samer al Ahmad, an expert on jihadist groups who comes from the region. HUMAN INTELLIGENCE One of the Western intelligence officers said human intelligence – as opposed to information gathered from devices such as mobile phones – was now crucial because the militants increasingly avoid means of communication prone to surveillance. “Most of the new operatives do not use mobile or gadgets that were behind the major past hits of foreign jihadists,” said the officer, who is familiar with some of the covert effort. Such human intelligence has been “critical” in the drive to kill and detain top militants in Syria since the start of the year and played a key role in Agal’s case, the U.S. military official said. “A lot of times, human intelligence is going to complement your other forms of intelligence, information you pick up from there or from voice signals and you can supplement it. In that case it really led the collection,” the official said. Agal had been hiding in plain sight in northern Syria, spending most of his time in territory held by Sunni Arab insurgents backed by Turkey and mostly steering clear of areas closer to his home town where he might be recognised, two of his relatives said. His death marked one of several blows against Islamic State in Syria this year. In February, the group’s leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi al-Quraishi died during a U.S. special forces raid in northern Syria, while in June U.S. forces seized another senior leader, Ahmad al Kurdi. read more Agal, Kurdi and the other militants who were targeted had slipped back into normal life, mingling among inhabitants of a heavily populated area along the Turkish border away from areas controlled by the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). HIT-AND-RUN ATTACKS The successful U.S. strikes have heartened Ahmad Assad al Hassouni, a senior figure in the Sheitaat tribe who is still searching for the remains of two of his four sons beheaded by Islamic State in 2014. “They slaughtered my sons and burnt our hearts,” he said. “I swear by God I won’t sleep until the last criminal is dead,” Although Islamic State increasingly lacks the capacity to stage large spectacular attacks, its presence is growing in remote areas of Deir al-Zor where control by the Kurdish-led SDF is shaky, residents said. At night, masked men set up checkpoints sowing fear in villages near Busayrah along the Euphrates river, five tribal sources said. Hit-and-run attacks on SDF checkpoints, meanwhile, have also increased in recent months, tribal chief Sheikh Basheer Dandal said, and the militants have also inflicted heavy casualties on pro-Iranian militias around Palmyra. It was fear of a resurgence of Islamic State that spurred 32-year-old Abdullah al Omar to inform on his own relatives. “I tipped the coalition about five people, including two cousins among my tribe whom we found out had been with Daesh, running checkpoints, burning homes,” said Omar, who comes from Abu Hamam by the Euphrates south of Busayrah. “We cannot sleep peacefully at night because we know they are still there just waiting for the right time to take revenge and slaughter those who survived their massacres.” Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Editing by Tom Perry, Dominic Evans and David Clarke Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

Polyplastics’ New 3D Printing Technology For DURACON (R) POM Accelerates Product Development Cycle – PR Newswire https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/polyplastics-new-3d-printing-technology-for-duracon-r-pom-accelerates-product-development-cycle-pr-newswire/ TOKYO, Sept. 13, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Polyplastics Co., Ltd., a leading global supplier of engineering thermoplastics, has developed three-dimensional (3D) printing technology for production of DURACON (R) polyoxymethylene (POM) products. The technology, known as Material Extrusion (MEX), delivers physical properties close to those of injection-molded articles despite being 3D-printed. Polyplastics will highlight the new 3D printing technology at the upcoming K 2022 exhibition (Hall 7A/B02) which runs October 19-26 in Duesseldorf, Germany. Photo: https://kyodonewsprwire.jp/prwfile/release/M100475/202209025914/_prw_PI1lg_k57WG1aI.png The MEX process can also be applied in preliminary evaluations of physical properties, functions, durability, and other properties without needing a mold, thus helping to accelerate the product development cycle. The MEX process is a typical 3D printing technology that uses thermoplastic resin materials. With resin filaments as the material input, this method produces 3D structures by repeatedly tracing and layering while depositing a melted material extruded through a tiny nozzle. Typically, only amorphous resins or resins with low crystallinity (e.g., ABS, polyamide) had been suitable for use in the MEX 3D printing process. POM’s high crystallinity and rapid rate of crystallization have made it unsuitable for use in the MEX 3D printing process. To address POM’s limitations, Polyplastics’ MEX 3D printing technology combines a more appropriate selection of POM grades with printing conditions optimized for their crystallization behavior. In addition to accelerating the product development cycle, the MEX technology could also be targeted for low-volume manufacturing of custom products. Polyplastics is seeking a patent for the DURACON (R) POM 3D printing technology and at the same time the company is developing additional DURACON (R) POM filament materials for use in 3D printing, including reinforced grades. The company is also accepting requests for actual product trial samples. Land Consultant, Conservationist Bill Dygert Dies At 71 – The Columbian https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/land-consultant-conservationist-bill-dygert-dies-at-71-the-columbian/ He helped conserve over 55,000 acres in Oregon, Washington Published: September 12, 2022, 5:54pm 2 Photos Bill Dygert, an independent land consultant who helped develop Clark County’s Legacy Lands program, looks over land near La Center in 2015. Dygert died Aug. 27 at 71. (Amanda Cowan/The Columbian files) Photo Gallery William “Bill” Dygert, a longtime land-use consultant active in conservation efforts in Southwest Washington, died Aug. 27 at his home in Astoria, Ore., from a chronic lung disorder. He was 71. Dygert was a founding member and longtime board member of the Vancouver-based Columbia Land Trust, which has conserved more than 55,000 acres in Oregon and Washington. “If you live, work or recreate in Southwest Washington, you have surely benefited from the work of Bill Dygert, who was instrumental in saving much of the natural beauty we enjoy today. No one has been more successful in creating parks and trails, conserving rivers and streams, and maintaining farm and forest land,” the Columbia Land Trust said in an emailed statement. “Bill’s impact comes from his direct work: facilitating the creation of park, trail and open space plans; creating citizen groups to advocate for those plans; and raising tens of millions of dollars to implement them,” the statement reads. “All of us who draw our joy and health from nature will continue to benefit from these efforts, long after his passing.” Dygert, who was raised in Vancouver, started working for the Clark County Parks Department in 1973 — first as an employee and later as an independent contractor. He negotiated with private landowners and secured funding to allow for the conversion of their private holdings to public uses. Through his grant writing, Dygert secured millions of dollars for municipalities and nonprofits in Southwest Washington, according to an obituary published Sunday in The Columbian. “If you’ve ever been to Lewisville, Frenchman’s Bar, Salmon Creek, Lacamas, Cottonwood Beach or Whipple Creek parks; walked the Salmon Creek, Lacamas or Burnt Bridge Creek trails; appreciated the glorious nature of the Washougal River, the Vancouver Lake lowlands or the East Fork Lewis River; had a picnic or thrown a frisbee in your neighborhood park; or fished or hunted in Southwest Washington, Bill played a key role in your experience,” Glenn Lamb, Columbia Land Trust executive director, said in an email. Lamb described Dygert as “one of the most important people in my life and for so many other people, too.” Dygert and his business partner, George Simpson, were behind the Clark County Legacy Lands (Clark County Conservation Futures) program and acquisition of more than 5,000 acres of protected land in Clark County. Later, he supported the development of the Astoria Riverwalk and was a longtime chair of the Lower Columbia River Fish Recovery Board, according to his obituary. “An entire generation of conservationists learned their craft from watching Bill, studying his patient persistence and dogged focus. Bill loved nature, and he also loved the colorful people who populate our region,” the Columbia Land Trust said. “A writer at heart, Bill would walk, take pictures and listen — and turn what he learned into grant proposals and testimonies. He took the stories of generations of people whose relationship with land ran deep and turned them into tangible conservation successes.” Dygert is the second of three sons of Dr. H. Paul and Helen Dygert. He is survived by his wife, Linda; stepson, Mick; brothers, Peter and Hal Dygert and their families; and his Labrador Prince Harry. Donations in memory of Dygert can be made to the Columbia Land Trust, 850 Officers Row, Vancouver, WA, 98661, and Clatsop Animal Assistance, P.O. Box 622, Warrenton, OR, 97146. A date for his celebration of life has not yet been announced. Columbian Assistant Metro Editor

Quality Sleep And Healthy Living With Vitafoam: Risks Of Taking Sleeping Pills And How To Avoid It Part I Tribune Online
Quality Sleep And Healthy Living With Vitafoam: Risks Of Taking Sleeping Pills And How To Avoid It – Part I – Tribune Online https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/quality-sleep-and-healthy-living-with-vitafoam-risks-of-taking-sleeping-pills-and-how-to-avoid-it-part-i-tribune-online/ It’s bedtime over the night, activities settled, lonely sounds become noticeable from room electronics, the ticking of the clock and insect cries, then, either at the beginning of the sleep time or during the sleep interruption, you’re staring at the ceiling and the walls, thinking about work, transactions, bills, relationships or family, tossing and turning. When sleep just won’t come, the night appears unusually longer. This is the picture of sleep problems where one may have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or not feeling refreshed upon waking.  If one regularly has such sleep troubles, it’s understandably tempting to resort to sleeping pills for relief.  As the name suggests, sleeping pills or medications help one catch some sleep. Sleeping pills may excitedly help people who have sleep problems to fall asleep easier, stay asleep longer or both. Rightly, the drugs should be taken only when prescribed by a well-trained qualified doctor for sleep problems. The various types of sleeping pills work to change brain chemicals differently and enhance sleep in the sleep-wake cycle. The pills slow down, silence and suppress the area of the brain that keeps one awake and alert. Contrary to the widespread belief that sleeping pills help people get a full, restful night’s sleep; several studies show that this is not exactly true. On average, people who take the drugs sleep only a little longer and a little better than those who don’t take them. Meanwhile, all sleeping pills have various serious and deadly damaging effects, which can be witnessed immediately in the following days or distantly during later months or years. These harmful effects vary depending on the specific drug, the dosage, the person’s age, and how long the drug lasts in one’s system. They can cause immediate severe but rare allergic reactions which lead to sudden death including death during sleep. They can also cause dangerous sleep-related behaviours like sleep-walking (walking without full awareness of one’s surroundings and directions which usually results in falls, especially among older adults), sleep-driving (driving while drowsy with resultant accidents), sleep-eating (eating in the middle of the night with blurred alertness often resulting in food-choking, food-poisoning, and unhealthy feeding), sleep-talking (talking inappropriately while unaware of the jargon speech). In all, the person appears to be awake, but the person’s brain is not fully alert. Most people don’t remember doing these things after they wake up. The dulling properties of some sleeping pills last well into the next day, leading to a next-day hangover effect, a drugged effect, the morning after taking them. People may feel confused and so sleepy the next day, have mixed-up thinking and experience dizziness or unsteadiness. These daytime effects can impair one’s ability to drive, operate machines, work, interact with others and complete daily tasks. There are other numerous harmful effects of sleeping medications, affecting different body parts and functions, including interactions with other medications. Considering the gravity of the destructive effects, it has been established that behavioural adjustments and sleep environmental changes are safer and better ways to improve sleep than medication, without the risk of deadly side effects – the reason we need to run away from the sleeping pills and embrace the following good sleep practices.  Firstly, practices to ensure the brain’s good health: – Consistently drink water at least 4.5L – 5.0L over the day, with urine turning colourless. – Regularly eat just enough quantity of balanced diet two or three times daily. – Regularly do SAFE exercises like fast walking, swimming, push-up sets, etc. – 30mins daily or at least five times a week. – Avoiding smoking, excess alcohol and stimulants like caffeine. – Keeping stresses in check with avoidance of avoidable stressors – Maintaining the same sleep schedule, particularly the period to go to bed. Secondly, ensure sleeping-inducing surroundings by: – Relaxing with soothing music, a good book or meditation. – Sleeping in a calming and relaxing environment  – Sleeping on quality mattresses and pillows that are conducive sleeping surfaces for supportive posture In our next article, I will discuss other numerous bad effects, emphasize good sleep practices, and highlight the few occasions where sleeping pills can be prescribed by trained doctors along with the guidelines for pill use. A Digitised Tunku Abdul Rahman Teaches Netizens About The Metaverse – Options The Edge https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/a-digitised-tunku-abdul-rahman-teaches-netizens-about-the-metaverse-options-the-edge/ Once in a while, a photo lets Ivan Khoo into his grandmother’s mind when wisps of her memory allow it. Like a camera shutter that is constantly misfiring, her brain captures hundreds of impressions and attempts to preserve them before dementia steals them away. As a loved one, unmoored by time, drifts into the abyss, Khoo hopes that the familiar face of a family member can make the fragmented anecdotes in a patient’s life whole again. Dementia sneaks up like a robber in the night to destroy a house built over a lifetime, but Khoo has realised that technology could be the hand to catch those free-falling in this battle of cognitive decline. When Maxis Bhd approached his company Ministry XR for a Chinese New Year campaign to raise awareness on dementia, Khoo and his team designed a data-driven app called RE:Collection to help patients relive their favourite memories through reminiscence therapy. Working with Kuala Lumpur-based dementia enrichment centre Caring With You and the Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation Malaysia, Ministry XR allows the elderly to recall poignant moments through augmented reality (AR), while giving caregivers better insight into which memory triggers matter the most to their loved ones. “It was a project that was closest to my heart,” says Khoo, who co-founded Ministry XR with chief technology officer Dr Andrew Yew in 2017, and grew the business into a leading spatial computing solution developer in the region in just four years. But Khoo, a former music and advertising expert, wants to extend his reach beyond the virtualisation of activities and interactions between machines, people and objects. “We’re now looking at advancing humanity by creating a thriving metaverse digital economy. Our virtual lives could play as important a role as our physical realities.” The biggest ideas in tech often barrel into the lexicon before they are truly coherent but if the jargon above sounds all too intimidating, picture this: You are attending a live performance by your favourite musician, rocking an outfit you have specially put together and cheering away with a group of concertgoers. But here’s the twist — the show is taking place in the metaverse, while your physical self is sitting in your own home. The dress and sneakers you picked out earlier are gaining attention because a non-fungible token (NFT) ensures they are virtual couture. And the cheering? It comes from other avatars who are live-streaming at the same time as you. Ever since the concept of metaverse was coined by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 novel Snow Crash to define a 3D world inhabited by digital people, it has been repurposed to describe the convergence of virtual reality and a digital second life in modern times. Although the buzzword has been bandied around in the worlds of commerce, business, finance and entertainment, its definition is still fuzzy and contested as it is continuously shaped by the ambitions of the people using it. Yet, tech titans are wasting no time jumping on the bandwagon — Facebook, for example, renamed itself Meta to reflect its metaverse vision and announced it will make 10,000 hires over the next few years to develop its platform. Touted to supersede the internet, this elevation of the online world will see more game-like representations of people (avatars) interacting in a graphically rich space, where they can work, play, trade, shop and pay for anything with cryptocurrencies. Soon, this will no longer sound like science fiction.  Metaverse, a tangible outcome of a Web 3.0 environment built on blockchain-based protocols that decentralise control and allow users to democratically govern the internet’s direction, radiates the promise of a virtual place untethered by hierarchies and limitations of the real world. Tech players around the globe are already embracing a digital frontier in which social norms and value systems are written anew, but is Malaysia ready for the metaverse? How do we stack up against others in terms of our digital standing? “I would think that we are 10 years behind,” laments Khoo, who also set up a headquarters in Singapore, which boasts a richer digital ecosystem with stricter digital privacy and security measures. “We have been going to some of the biggest tech conferences in the world, including the Augmented World Expo in Silicon Valley, the US. When I was there, I felt such a big relief because conversations were easier as everyone shared the same innovative spirit and passion for knowledge. In 2020, 70% of Fortune 500 companies were already making plans to develop digital strategies using XR technology. But progress was a little lagging back home. For instance, when dot-com boomed, how many Malaysians saw the opportunity to make a compelling impact with a solution?” As much as we possess a voracious appetite for technology and a good understanding of AR, Khoo points out that local tech companies are too few and far from being leading-edge to assist with the adoption. Ignorance, fear of change and a high resistance investing in new ideas among business holders despite wanting to leverage AR could also impede Malaysia from being at the forefront of digital fields such as big data, cloud and artificial intelligence (AI). “The next era of computing [that is ubiquitous computing or the metaverse] will drive the next industrial revolution. And it stems from advancements made on foundational IR 4.0 technologies. We need people of influence to lead, top level corporate management to incite change, and government bodies to provide support by commissioning for proprietary technology development locally and providing subsidies to companies that perform it.” Thus, to gain a foothold in the virtual world and capitalise on the unlimited realities these technologies offer, Ministry XR is launching Xanadu, Asia’s entertainment metaverse and NFT gallery that can be experienced during a three-week festival to celebrate 65 years of our country’s independence. Billed as the world’s first national day event, the aptly named Merdekaverse allows netizens — particularly the younger generation — to relive the historic declaration of “Merdeka!” by our first prime minister; attend the Tanggal 31 concert by our very own Singing Lawyer; and join a jubilant parade that culminates with firework displays in the sky. To mimic how a real festival would take place, the backdrop of Merdekaverse changes when a user logs in at different times — you may see decorations and flags being put up at Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad to drum up excitement one day, or  jam with a live DJ at Xanadu Beach during the grand finale the next. Malaysian-themed games also add to the fun, where players can scour the site for 65 items to win a treasure hunt, navigate pothole-riddled roads in Lari Sampai Pengsan that pokes fun at our daily struggles, or scale our iconic Petronas Twin Towers (or jagungs, as the locals call it) in an obstacle course. As floods are becoming a common sight in the country, a cheeky and satirical side-scrolling game named Banjir Surf raises money to help flood relief organisations while promoting the #kitajagakita mentality. “This is a way of showing how the metaverse can give back to society and perform transfer of knowledge as we take history lessons out of the classroom,” says Khoo, whose team has worked closely with Arkib Negara and Muzium Negara to glean information, old photos and never-before-seen footage of our Bapa Kemerdekaan to complement the digital festival. Apart from getting government bodies on board, Xanadu has also engaged social enterprise Projek57 and Mercy Malaysia for the event. “Merdekaverse is a good case study to convince brands about the transformative possibilities of the metaverse. The goal of Xanadu is to redistribute the ownership, power, opportunities and wealth of the internet to its community of creatives, creators and end users. So in the case of Merdekaverse, it’s all wins across the board — music artists get the exposure through an immersive engagement with fans, creators can build more interactive content that courts collaborations, and brands can sponsor local acts and promote partnerships that bring new audiences to the table on their platforms at a small fee. If you look at it, it’s democratising advertising too because as much as people want to be associated with brands, they don’t want commercials to be shoved in their face all the time.” Marketers are slowly seeing the potential for new revenue streams in the metaverse, such as renting digital land they own to other brands or selling digital collectibles to consumers. Although most platforms are still nascent, enthusiasm for the virtual world remains undimmed as a fledgling, savvy generation — which already has one foot in the metaverse via gaming and social media — sees it as an avenue of self-expression. They celebrate individuality over conformity and community over corporations in ways simply not possible in real life. Moreover, thanks to a high rate of internet penetration in Malaysia, forward-thinking schools and teachers are nurturing a crop of tech enthusiasts. Ministry XR’s partnership with Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU), which developed state-of-the-art equipment and facilities that include a 360-degree volumetric video capture zone, extended education experience (EDEX) station and mixed reality smart glasses in the form of Microsoft HoloLens, is a salient example. “We’re trying to create a sustainable ecosystem with a prospective future. If brands, government institutions and large corporations take the leap in spatial technology and, say, the metaverse, more career opportunities will result in a pool of high-value engineers, product visionaries, and creative technolog...

Unfortunately, my life is still a little too crazy to take on a new pet right now, so I’ve decided to cope by buying this pillow. It keeps my pet-owning dreams alive! The Crazy Corgi Lady Makeup Bag You Never Knew You Needed First of all, I want to know who ISN’T corgi crazy? Like who out there looks at a corgi and is just like, “Meh, I feel nothing”? How could that cute little wiggle butt not instantly melt your heart? If you’re in the market for a new makeup bag, this one won’t disappoint. It’s water resistant, scratch resistant and it’s made with a high quality canvas material, so it’s cute and sturdy! A Funny Corgi Mug for Your WFH Desk Your new remote setup isn’t complete without a desk mug. Regardless of your decor style, it’s going to look great and make you smile every day. It’s completely microwave and dishwasher safe too, so you don’t have to worry about the cute pattern wearing off. This Corgi Handbag Would Have Made Her Chuckle The Queen never went anywhere without her hat or handbag. She would have LOVED a corgi handbag, if the royal decorum had allowed her such an accessory. If you need a new puppy-themed bag, this one is definitely the cutest one I’ve seen on Amazon. Get Some Corgi Crew Socks for Winter Time These are so cute! They’re perfect for cozying up next to the fireplace this holiday season. Did you know the queen first knew she wanted a corgi when she was a child? According to BBC, she owned over 30 corgis in her lifetime! Next time your husband gets mad at you for bringing home a cute puppy, tell him he should be thankful you didn’t bring back as many as the Queen did! Dog Lovers, You’re Going to Want This Ice Mold I don’t know about you, but this product is just what I need to ride out the beginning of fall heat waves. Buyer Matthew Diep confirmed it’s exactly what you’re looking for in an ice mold: “I have a collection of various ice cube molds and had to get this one because I have a pet corgi (Bonnie). I like this tray a lot because it’s firm enough to fill it with water and handle it with one hand – so no floppy water spillage or any of that nonsense. The cubes come out of the tray easily and the mold produces a well-contoured cube. The cubes fit in various containers that I have (Yetis and Hydroflask for the most part). I tried it with a room temperature scotch and found that the ice cube stayed frozen for longer than I anticipated, which was nice. I like it and feel like it’s going to get a lot of use this summer.” Your Home Office Needs This Corgi Pencil Holder IKEA may have cheap furniture, but they really don’t compete when it comes to desk decor. Amazon is loaded with cool niche gadgets like this hilarious pencil holder! If you can’t get enough of these furry babies, add this accessory to your desk for an extra dose of serotonin every day! You Know She Would Secretly Want a Pair of These Corgi Slippers Underneath the perfect smile and strict sense of decorum, I’m sure the Queen kicked back in her comfies like the rest of us before bed. She may not have owned a pair of slipper exactly like this, but you can bet that chilly British weather had her in some kind of cozy footwear. Personally, I like to imagine she had a secret pair of corgi slippers; it makes me smile. Take Your Corgi Obsession on the Road with This Travel Mug This mug is a great conversation starter at work, ideal for your new office! It’s guaranteed to grab the attention of all pet lovers (myself included). Take the opportunity to network and maybe set up a fun play date for your corgi! As for the specs, this mug won’t let you down: its double-walled vacuum insulation ensures your coffee will stay fresh for hours. A Doormat Made for Dog Lovers Your pup is your best friend, and you’re going to make sure the world (or at least your neighbor) knows it. Before anyone even enters the house, they’ll be able to clearly tell you’re a dog person. I have to admit, that’s also a great way to warn those of us who are dog-shy what to expect. All in all, it’s a great find for anyone who wants a fun new doormat. Make Corgi-Shaped Treats with These Cookie Cutters Tea and biscuits is the most British tradition ever – why not add a few corgis into the mix? Next time you host a brunch, try using these to cut out cute little sandwiches! The best part is that these are made with pure copper, so they’re a little bit flexible and, at the same time, very durable. Gift These Socks to the Corgi Lover in Your Life The best ones here are clearly the Corgis in London socks. The little dog with the crown absolutely sends me. You can also get your corgi fix with these other memorable patterns: corgis on pizza, corgis on bacon, corgis on kayaks and even corgis in shark costumes. This British Corgi Towel is Coming Home with Me Look at this distinguished gentleman. He would fit right in with the Royal Family! He’s even got the little flag bandana. At first I thought this was a kitchen towel, but apparently it’s designed to absorb water, making it more of a sports towel. The colors are super bright, but you can still machine wash it, which I think is nice for such a novelty item. A Corgi Origami Necklace for On-the-Go Buyers are raving about this unique piece of jewelry! Reviewer Brittanica says the rose gold coloring is especially useful for outfit planning: “I got the rose gold option, and it matches my outfits both silver and gold jewelry so it really branches out as far as what it can pair with. My corgi, Flynn, seems to love that he’s represented while I’m out of the house, as he had to pop in the picture for the review here. Enjoy, it’s a very cute purchase and I get sweet compliments on it.” Flynn sounds like quite the charmer! This Corgi Ornament Belongs on Your Christmas Tree Your pet themed Christmas tree absolutely needs this ornament. How could you say no to that face? Buyer G. Hokanson can confirm it makes the perfect gift for animal lovers: “If you have, or have friends who have corgis, you’ll (and they) will be very happy with this ornament.” Time to add this to my Christmas shopping list! Buy This Plushie, Quick, Before You Adopt Another Puppy! Real talk: kittens are my weakness, and I have to ACTIVELY stop myself from just going out and adopting one. As tempting as bringing home a new family member may be, there are plenty of reasons why one more animal might not be the best idea right now. Instead of putting yourself in that position, buy this adorable plushie instead! As you can see from the picture, he’s definitely very snuggleable. This one will definitely be a hit with the grandkids! No Corgi Shrine is Complete without a Statue The nice thing about knick-knacks is that you can pretty much use them anywhere: in the bathroom, the kitchen, on a desk or in your living room. Personally, I think this little guy belongs right next to a tea and coffee station, but I could also see him greeting guests from the front window. Break out This Puppy Puzzle When the Nasty Winter Storms Arrive Honestly, there’s nothing more relaxing than instrumental music, some tea and a nice puzzle on a rainy afternoon. It’s a great way to unplug for a little while and occupy your time, especially when it’s too wet to go out on your day off. Grab your furry best friend and enjoy some quality time! Kick Back and Relax with This Corgi Wine Glass Nothing says “I’m a dog mom” more than this glass! If you’re looking to replace your old wine glasses with something more fun, these definitely have all the personality you want without going over the top. The pattern is sand-etched, so it’s safe to use in the dishwasher too. A Corgi Oven Mitt? I MUST HAVE! This oven mitt is so cute, I could cry! He’s even got little heart glasses on. If you love to bake for the holidays as much as I do, grab these now! You can show them off every time your friends and family come over for freshly baked pumpkin bread. This Corgi Mug is Perfect for Your Boss I don’t think I’ve ever had a boss who didn’t own a dog, seriously. If you’re struggling over what to get your new manager for this year’s Secret Santa, this mug is a safe bet. Especially if it’s white elephant, you know people will fight over this.
